Great for these types of students

PCC is great for students who are not exactly ready to leave home yet. It is also great for students who have to pay for college themselves, and they need to find an inexpensive way for higher education. Another part that is great about going to PCC is that you have the opportunity to transfer to a college better than the one that previously accepted you or perhaps denied you. What I see that is most great about going to PCC is students like you and me having a second chance, and taking advantage of it to better our lives.

    Tips for prospective students

The Tips that I would suggest is to attend class and do your work as soon as you receive it. The work is easy, however if you get lazy and lag on it you will definitely find your back against the wall. Another tip is to ask your professor if you require the latest version of the text book. I've asked my professors this question and many have told me that I could use the previous version, and older versions cost are much lower. I would use Amazon, or half.com to buy your textbooks rather than the school itself since the schools prices are normally about 20 dollars more. I would also car pool as well since the first couple of weeks are very hectic, and it is difficult to find parking.

    Bang for the buck

Pasadena City College is extremely cheap for the amount of information you receive. The cost per unit is very reasonable and people of any income can really pay it off without having to miss out on payment for rent. The food on the campus is fairly cheap as well so you won’t have to worry about losing all your money in your wallet. The books themselves however all together sometimes cost more what you actually paid for your tuition and classes. The books are the main problem and you would spend most of your money buying books.

    Am enjoying being here

I am definitely missing out on the rooming experience of attending a four year college, but in many ways I like it as well. I believe I keep myself more accountable towards my work as well as I have a sense of independence, because rooming you have the people at the dorm with you, but at a community college everyone else seems to be busy looking after themselves. The experience of going to a community college isn’t exciting; however it really makes you grow up a lot faster than you would anticipate it would.

    Am learning a lot

After I graduated from High School I knew that going to a community college was my only option. A lot of people told me that it would be High School all over again, and I believed them that were until I finished my first year of college and started my second year. My First year was really a transition year and I realized that the material cover is at a much more quicker pace as well as more difficult, but my second year was when I really started learning more about myself. I am realizing more and more each day what I want to do in my life, and a lot of it is thanks towards Pasadena City College having terrific and caring professors. A lot of the professors on campus want to see you be successful and transfer out of there, and they often not only teach about the subject but the importances of getting a higher education.

    Art students

    Tips for prospective students

Speak to your teachers, they really have some great stories and advice.

    Bang for the buck

The classes are affordable, if you go to Art Center or any other art school, you'll be paying triple times more than here for about the same courses. But of course if you want to go to a prestigious art school be my guest, but you can save some money here before transferring to an art school.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being here for the available classes I've been able to get the necessary classes to transfer, most students beginning their first year here haven't been lucky enough to get general education classes.

    Am learning a lot

I'm a design student at PCC, so this is helpful for those majoring in art. The professors at this school are amazing, they attended prestigious schools and have a lot to teach their students so take advantage of it. I've learned and understood a lot about art from basic drawing to 3 dimensional design and I will continue to take many more art courses here.

Great for these types of students

    - Those who do not know or are not sure of what they'd like to pursue, academically or professionally - Students would like to spend less money for quality education - Students who would like to receive their general ed requirements or attain their A.A. - Students who are planning on transferring to a four-year university - Students who are looking to take informative, intellectually-stimulating classes

    Tips for prospective students

1.) If you're planning on taking an art class, take heed: art supplies could quite possibly cost more than textbooks alone. For a single semester of an art class, I spent over $200 on supplies. Be prepared, and do not be surprised when you are asked to buy a $10 pencil. 2.) Take note of where well-lit walkways and paths are. If you have classes that start or end after the sun goes down, you will want to be in a well-lit area; always carry your phone or keys with you while walking, just to be safe. 3.) Take advantage of the second-level handicap walkways; it connects the C, V, R, and W buildings, making it an extremely useful way to get from one class to another. 4.) Carpool, if you can. That way, traffic will be tolerable going to or coming from PCC, and you'll save money, time, gas, and it's better for the environment. Also consider getting to PCC an hour early in order to find a parking spot; they really ARE as hard to find as people say they are. 5.) Take advantage of to the library! PCC's library is award-winning for a reason. The faculty is extremely helpful, there are three floors and dozens of places to study, and they carry every book imaginable; you can borry up to twenty-five books at a time! The online library is especially useful, too. Note: the view of the mountains from the third floor is gorgeous. 6.) If you're trying to access the internet basically anywhere populated, you're in a hot spot. Try sitting in one of the building's hallways; there's usually a speedy, reliable connection. 7.) What you put in to your classes is what you will get out of them. My experience with various professors has been fantastic, and I've come to realize just how vital and important healthy student-professor relationships are. The more you immerse yourself in your work, the relationship you have with your professor, and your contribution to the classroom's setting, discussions, and people, the happier you will be and the more you will learn.

    Bang for the buck

I wasn't able to attend a four-year university due to finances. But at PCC, a semester of twelve units cost me around $300, excluding any additional cost that was associated with the classes I took. To put it into perspective, a semester at a state school could cost anywhere between $4,000 - $10,000, and a semester at a private school could cost anywhere between $10,000 and $30,000. When I checked out PCC, I was sold - no pun intended.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being able to sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery. In the main quad, there's always something going on, whether it be the PCC Flea Market, a jazz band performance, a blood drive, a pep rally, or a Naked Juice sample cart making the rounds. There are a lot of people who smoke, which was difficult to adjust to (I have asthma), but other than that, I cannot complain. Enjoy those breaks between classes!

    Am learning a lot

I've learned so much about myself from PCC's classes, professors, and environment. I've learned how to be independent, accountable to myself, and I've been able to piece together a career plan I would have never known existed had I not come to PCC. This school has opened my eyes to so many more opportunities than I realized were possible in high school. Women In Literature is one of the BEST classes I have ever taken. Whether you are male or female, TAKE IT; its eye-opening, empowering, intellectually-stimulating, and relevant. Every class that I have taken at PCC thus far, which has been about seven, has been fantastic. I'm in love with learning now, and have amazing professors. Note: a lot of these professors have a PHD in something. Ask them questions to enhance the experience!

    What to do for fun

At Pasadena City College there are many clubs and organizations in which you could join. Currently, I belong to two clubs. I also surf the web at the student lounge.

    Food and Dining

Pasadena City College only has two buildings where students can go and eat and the some food is served/ made every day. However, around the campus there is a plethora of eateries that range from fast food to gourmet dining. For example, across from the campus is a Panda Express and if you were to venture further down Colorado Street into Old Town Pasadena, you would find a Cheescake Factory restaurant.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms at Pasadena City College. However, there are apartments for rent. Don't get sucked in at the low prices on some of the buildings though; it is really expensive to live in Pasadena.

    Academic Rigor

Really it all depends on the classes your taking. For example, learning a new language, say Mandarin, will be much more difficult than taking a P.E. class. So prioritize, and plan your study time on which class is the most difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't procrastinate! I can't stress this one enough. If you do this only makes assignments and tests much tougher than they actually are.

    In three sentences

A great school with a lot of academic opportunities on and near the campus. However, cuts made by the board of education in California will effect the amount of classes and how much students have to pay next semester. Still it is a great college with a lot of things to do since it is in Pasadena.

    Campus Safety

PCC is an open campus. There are security officers just about everywhere. However, students may find they have more to worry about regarding their fellow students rather than outside influences.

Great for these types of students

Students who are looking to pay as little as possible their first year or two fresh out of high school are likely to find this school suitable to their needs. Students who are returning to college are also likely to find this school suitable to their needs.

    Bang for the buck

Cheaper price tag for general education classes than those at a four-year university.

    What to do for fun

PCC has a fairly large campus and enough places to socialize. There are food and drink places nearby, and Old Pasadena is not that far away.

    Food and Dining

There are two cafeterias on campus. Nearby are several fast-food places, a few cafes, and if you want to venture a few miles, Old Town Pasadena has more formal restaurants and eateries. There's generally adequate food available at a decent price for college students.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms on campus, but there are apartments available for rent nearby.

    Academic Rigor

You cannot slack off at this school, regardless of how good you are at a subject. Most professors take plagiarism and/or cheating seriously and are likely to catch you if you do. There are regularly-assigned homework, projects, essays, and exams which will pile up quickly if you procrastinate.

    Tips for prospective students

Plan at least two to three weeks ahead for your registration, and don't stick solely to one schedule. Make contingency plans. Saves you both time and energy panicking at the last minute and you are very likely to get the classes you want and need to transfer, provided you plan ahead.

    In three sentences

PCC offers a decent education--especially for general education classes--at a much lower price than four-year universities. It's a good school for students looking for a more affordable place to get their general education classes out of the way before transferring. However, to do that, you need to stick to a plan to transfer.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on which professor you take, the difficulty could vary. However, even with difficult professors and difficult subjects, the best instructors will try to the best of their ability to help you excel in the subject, provided you reach out to them and put in effort.

    Tips for prospective students

During Fall and Spring sessions, parking can be difficult. It is recommended to show up anywhere from an hour or half hour earlier before class to ensure a parking spot. In my experience, the professors I've had at Pasadena City College thus far are superb and thought-provoking, but always check out reviews on ratemyprofessor.com.

    Academic Rigor

Professors expect you to show up to class so do not take that lightly. Study hard for your tests and ask any questions you are unclear of because you are limited to 3 withdrawals of the similar course. Your financial aid is reduced if your grades fall.

Within walking distance to very very yummy restaurants.

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

It ranks high in transfer rates, so I supposed it's pretty high up there.

    Tips for prospective students

Go in to the offices and talk to people. Do not call or email with questions. If you call, you will be placed on hold for long periods of time, or will be sent to a voicemail which will not return phone calls. If you email, simply do not expect a reply. It is so much easier to deal with them in real life.

    In three sentences

Pasadena City College gives little direction when you are just starting. I'd say it ranks poorly in informing their students what is next. I don't know how well it is academically yet because the term hasn't begun, but my relationship with PCC is off to a bad start.

Any college expects their students to be responisble for their own work and studies, so of course this one would too. However, the teachers are very accommodating, and love nothing more than to help you get a better understanding what you need to do.

Also, the Week of Relaxation during finals week which offers free yoga classes, massages, scantron sheets and test supplies. Food and Dining

The pizza slice in the cafeteria is pretty cheap. If that doesn't suit your style, there's a ton of restaurants and fast food around.

    Academic Rigor

Really depends on the teacher. New students usually don't have a choice and get the bad teachers and/or the hard graders. However, it's completely doable.

    Tips for prospective students

New comers: get whatever class you can. It doesn't matter if you don't necessarily need it, because you're counting on next semester's priority, as you don't get any the first semester anyway. On the first day (if not morning class), get there an hour earlier for parking. Totally serious.

    Food and Dining

Food is amazing and not so pricy. There are only two small cafes here, but there are many varieties of food available.

    Dorm Life

The downside about community colleges is that dorm life is not an option. You don't get to experience that type of independence here.

    Academic Rigor

It's important to develop strong working and study habits. Not all teachers will help you or go the extra mile for you if you slack off. It's vital to stay on top of school.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms since its a community college, but in terms of accessibility its in a very good location.

    Academic Rigor

Some professors have a more intense curriculum than others, overall the work load is very manageable. It's a good idea for students to take independent studies to push themselves and prepare for transfer.

    Tips for prospective students

Develop a healthy relationship with professors, they are very willing to help but it takes student's initiative.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to get to the parking lots at least 15 mins earlier to find parking before your class starts. Rent or buy used books to save money. Use ratemyprofessors.com to help in selecting your classes. The quality of professors really make a huge difference in learning. Review lecture notes often. Don't miss more than one class meeting at a time if you need to be absent. It will be hard to catch up with the class when you come back 2-3 class sessions later.

    In three sentences

Most of the time, for every one bad professor you end up taking a class with, you will have one to two professors who will make learning fun (ratio is 1:1.5). It's pretty much a life & death situation/battle for parking in the school parking lots during the first few weeks of the semester. The campus is alright; the annoying part is that there is always construction happening somewhere, and is sometimes a distraction during lectures.

    Academic Rigor

Math classes are practically impossible to pass, many opt to go to different CC campuses. Professors are highly qualified and demand a lot, all have different teaching techniques so don't ever expect a similar classroom routine.

    Tips for prospective students

Campus police is always walking around, and this is such a diverse school, I wouldn't be surprised if the person you just met knows martial arts. There has been stories with PCC students involved in physically harming other students, but don't occur on campus. But of course, being in any place, you must be careful at night walking to the parking lots.

    Clubs and Activities

I must say, I am quite disappointed in clubs and activities on this campus. There are a few good community service clubs and an honor society, but nothing fun ever usually happens on campus. The associated student body might be too concerned with how to save money or just don't have too many good ideas. There should be mini concerts, or contests, or food fairs and fundraisers, but that all don't exist here. The best week is usually Welcome Back week where a few festivities are held. The Rose Bowl is located in Pasadena, where many events are held there, whether they are barbeques, festivals, or football games. There are numerous amount of clubs and bars to check out as well. There is also a skate rink, bowling alley, hookah bars, etc.

    Food and Dining

Pasadena is a great place whether you want to fine dine or just grab a burger and some fries. Up and down Colorado Blvd are all restaurants, bars, theaters, clubs, and shops. There's a good fried chicken place, burger joint, ice cream shop, italian restaurants, almost everything!

    Dorm Life

There aren't any dorms. But if you are an athlete, you can possibly make some living arrangements in the community with your coaches. There are many homes, with many neighboring cities all less than a 10 mile radius, so there are many living options.

    Academic Rigor

The math and science program here is quite advanced and difficult. We have very qualified science teachers and for math, mostly with the advanced classes. These teachers really try to prepare you for your next step, and even grad school! So if you're a science or math major, it's anything but easy. Our english department is fine, but if youre taking a critical thinking class, be prepared to think and write a lot. There are of course very simple and easy classes such as speech and sociology.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not think because you are at a junior college, that you do not need to work hard. Stay active, responsible, and hard working, but go and have fun too instead of worrying so much about transferring. Make it count. Look up clubs, scholarships, and utilize everything offered, because people think a junior college may not have much. As for books, try not to spend at the bookstore, look hard for used books on bulletin boards or online. Be persistent when trying to get classes. We are a small school with many people without classes, but you never know what kind of teacher you might have or how many people decide to drop that week, or even the next week! Just stay and see what happens.

    In three sentences

Some might say I could a little bias for having school spirit wherever i attend, but I honestly believe Pasadena CIty College is well rounded and one of the best junior colleges around! We have a great science and math program and sports program as well. The campus and community is beautiful and opportunities are everywhere!

Morning to afternoon classes should'nt be a problem. But night classes can be a little scary. Rumor has it, a number of rapists can be found in PCC. To non-American students (particularly Asian girls), some Americans can be too friendly that sometimes they might scare you. So, just be careful.

    Bang for the buck

The cost of the textbooks here is CRAZY. There's this small bookstore across the campus (behind C-building) that sells the same books used in PCC in a relatively cheaper price. Or you can always purchase your books online through Amazon, etc.

    What to do for fun

Some classes actually require you to be in the lab for certain number of hours. You can actually sign in at the lab, and do homeworks for other subjects then leave and still earn your hours for this class. Even better, you can just sign in and leave right away without signing out. Do whatever you want, go to lunch or go to other classes then go back to the lab afterwards to sign out. That way, you still earn your hours without being inside the lab that whole time :)

    Food and Dining

There are two cafeterias in PCC. The one I usually go to is called La Piazza. The food there is really good and they serve varieties of food. The ambience and design are also classy and homey. The other one, however, is an uglier version of La Piazza. And I heard that some hobos actually go there and steal bits and pieces of the food.

    What to do for fun

Hang out in one of the many quads, go eat, get some coffee, go hike Mt. Wilson, join some clubs, read in the library, see if there are any live performances going on....

    Food and Dining

Though the food on campus is just so-so (mostly snacks or pizza), there are plenty of good restaurants in walking distance.

    Dorm Life

It's a city college, so, no dorms. What do you expect? I have heard there is some sort of student housing, but I would recommend living independent from the school.

    Academic Rigor

It is difficult to rate the rigor, because at times it does seem overly rigorous for a city college. I gave it four stars because of this. Most of the time, though, the level of rigor seems appropriate in preparing you for transfer to a higher level school.

    Tips for prospective students

This school is rigorous, but worth it to get a good education. The strongest departments at PCC are probably Math, Science, Music, and Humanities.

    Tips for prospective students

You're going to go broke attending this school, so plan to work at least a 30 hour week while attending as the Pell grant isn't even enough to buy cheap food with in this area, let alone live on. Prepare good study habits and don't expect the professors to be available for contact or assistance in anything. Before entering Pasadena City College, make sure to have a plan in mind. The difficulty of obtaining classes have increased and without a plan, your education might prolong. Also, make sure to visit a counselor prior to your enrollment. They will list the courses the students need in able to transfer or get in to programs at PCC.

    In three sentences

Pasadena provides a great environment for college students. The campus is small enough to establish many networks within students. Great for these types of students

Very diverse campus where everyone is welcome.

There is a new science building int he back of the campus and the gym is awkward to find.

    Bang for the buck

Cheap classes, same general ed as any university.

    What to do for fun

Sit int he library and do homework.

    Food and Dining

I would rather go across the street to be honest.

    Dorm Life

    There are no dorms

    Academic Rigor

I am in the basic general ed classes so far but I know it will become more challenging. Luckily the teachers I have now are preparing me for what is to come.

    Tips for prospective students

I would check out the campus before deciding on attending and also checking rate my professors before deciding to take certain classes and/or teachers.

    In three sentences

Pasadena City College changed my perspective completely on what a community college would be like. Right off the bat, I was able to make friends and maintain high grades even with the challenging, but doable homework given. I would recommend it to anyone.

    Campus Safety

The campus is very safe. There are always campus policemen/policewomen walking around or riding their bikes.

    Clubs and Activities

Pasadena City College has an event called Club Week where new students are able to join the clubs on campus. Students are able to speak with the representatives in the club for more information.

Great for these types of students

The campus is great for anyone who likes to have a smooth transition from high school to college. It is also for anyone who likes to live in urban areas. Although there are grass and trees on campus, it is more urban like than nature like.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Quad is the center of campus and it is popular for club meetings, events, and entertainment.

    What to do for fun

Pasadena City College is a quiet campus, but every so often the college have events that goes around in the Quad (the center of the college). What you can do on a regular day is chill in the library (it is very quiet in the 3rd level), walk around the campus, or even take a drive to Old Pasadena, which is not too far from the campus.

    Food and Dining

Although I have never tried the food on campus, I have heard that it is decent. There are two cafeterias on campus and each provide their own menu. If you do not like the campus food for whatever reason, there are many restaurants around the campus, including fast food places, which you may visit.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms offered by the school. There are nearby apartments that you may be able to rent.

    Academic Rigor

The academic work that you do is similar to high school work, but more rigor. I would say the rigor would be rated between high school and 4 years university. The classes that I have taken (majority is general education courses) are challenging in a sense that it challenges your critical thinking among others. For those who believe that they would not like a big transition from high school to college, then a 2 year community college is a best fit for you.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest to walk around the campus to see if you're comfortable in attending this college (try imaging yourself in this campus). Usually if you cannot imagine yourself in this campus, then Pasadena City College is not for you. I would also suggest that you attend the events that is host by the college, such as fairs, because you will pick up current information about what is available in which you can take advantage on.

    In three sentences

Pasadena City College is the best community college in Southern California in the sense that it has many established programs to help students succeed. The campus is very comfortable and safe. It is located in an urban area.

    Campus Safety

We have a very active campus police force, as well as cadets, present 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for campus safety.

    Clubs and Activities

PCC boasts a plethora of clubs and activities from band, opera, jazz band, sports, a garden club, art club as well as numerous activities throughout the campus each semester. My favorite is the monthly swap meet (reoccurs the 1st sunday of each month, Free)!

Great for these types of students

Great for any type of student from recent high school graduates to stay at home mothers wishing to return to college. PCC also offers an array of more casual non-credit classes.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Ask around for the rooftop garden location!

    Bang for the buck

Although the cost of classes has recently risen to $46/unit, PCC is dedicated to assisting students in the acquisition of financial aid, which can severely lower or even eliminate the cost of attendance.

    What to do for fun

Pasadena City College is located on the main street in Pasadena, Colorado Blvd. In addition to the numerous on campus music and theater events etc, the campus is closely situated to Old Town Pasadena which hosts several restaurants, stores and movie theaters.

    Food and Dining

The campus cafeteria is a good place to grab a drink or a quick snack between classes. Their heated food however, is quite dreadful. I recommend crossing Colorado blvd to get lunch at any of the neighboring restaurants which vary from fast food to sit down restaurants.

    Academic Rigor

Most of the Fine Art, Philosophy and Sociology classes I've taken have presented students with a consistent amount of class/homework which is demanding, but by all means accomplish-able. For a Junior College, PCC boasts a very impressive faculty.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply Early! The earlier your registration date, the earlier you're allowed to sign up for classes. Because of cutbacks, winter intersession has been cancelled. This equates to more competition and wait lists during Fall and Spring terms. Also, don't forget to ask about financial aid and make sure you have a current Fafsa!

    In three sentences

Pasadena City College is a wonderful place to begin your educational pursuits. They offer tutoring and transfer assistance as well as generous amounts of financial aid. PCC possesses a large campus to accommodate a growing student population and wide array of available academic disciplines.

    Clubs and Activities

The clubs and activities could be more streamlined because I've been attending this school for about two years and it is still hard to figure out which clubs exist.

    Bang for the buck

At $46 per unit for residents, it is considerably cheaper than going to a four-year university.

    What to do for fun

Hanging out by the mirror pools in front of the school or even just hanging out in the halls with your friends are the best.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria, while it doesn't have the greatest food, is affordable and quick eats. Also, there are fast food restaurants all around the school so you'll never be lacking.

    Dorm Life

No dorm life as its a junior college.

    Academic Rigor

Some professors are really difficult, verging on a four-year university level, while some are almost as easy as a high school teacher.

    Tips for prospective students

Remember to pay for your classes in three business days or the school will drop all your classes.

    In three sentences

The school is good but needs a lot of improvements. The registration system they have with their fees make it incredibly stressful for students when getting classes. Also, lately, classes have been cut so its harder to get the classes you need, so the school needs to work on that bit for sure, especially with the overpopulation.

    Academic Rigor

The prerequisite classes are generally less rigorous because of the class size, but they become more challenging as they become more major-specific.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to wait in long lines towards the beginning of the semesters. Although the staff do their best, there are an overwhelming amount of students attending each semester.

    In three sentences

PCC is a large school with many options for extracurricular activities. The faculty and stuff do an excellent job of handling the incredibly high number of students attending the school each semester. The faculty is experienced and teaches above and beyond the curriculum.

    Campus Safety

I have never personally seen campus police in action of stopping a crime, there are usually one-two around each section of school walking and watching for student safety. I do hear from friends who are Campus Security and from professors of their rigorous training. The campus safety must be fine because I have not seen a crime to be stopped during my time here.

    Greek Life

Although there are no actual Greek fraternities or sororities on-campus, many students can choose to join open Greek systems in So-Cal. There is Alpha Gamma Sigma, a Greek Honor Society based on GPA and unit merits as well as Omicron Mu Delta, which is based on student and staff recognition of excellency. There is also a pre-law co-ed fraternity.

    Clubs and Activities

I was most active in three Student Government positions, the honor societies AGS and OMD, and volunteer club CKI. There are hundreds of amazing clubs for you to select from that would best fit your interest. I would suggest visiting the quad on club day to stop by the booths and check out what PCC has to offer through your peers.

    What to do for fun

Study! Just kidding, join a student organization because you will make a lot of friends while prepping for your transfer application. You will also learn a lot and get to do volunteer work. There are great food places to try in Pasadena as well.

    Food and Dining

Although the food on-campus are not particularly spectacular, the pizza is pretty cheesy and cheap. The drinks from the little stand in the quad are expensive and quite bland so if you need to quench your caffeine craving, the cafeteria is much better. The cafeteria by the L building is stunningly decorated and worth checking out.

    Dorm Life

While I lived at home attending Pasadena City College, I have made friends who lived around the campus. There is no on-campus dorm option, but the apartments around the campus are around 400-1000 dollars per month. These apartments usually require you to be very quiet, but some have utility and game rooms.

    Academic Rigor

Introductory classes will not be greatly challenging, but will engage your interest in a major topic. As you delve deeper into the academics and take intermediate and upper-division classes, the content will increasingly become more difficult as expected. This does not mean give up; get to know your professors during office hours or find a tutor.

    Tips for prospective students

When getting started, talk to the counselors and get all the lists of classes you will need for transferring or to attain a certificate. Look up an online book sale group or check the boards around campus for cheaper textbooks. Join a few clubs or teams to stay well-rounded.

    In three sentences

While it is quite difficult to enroll in prospective classes during the first year, Pasadena City College offers a generous amount of excellent and qualified teachers. There is a plethora of student clubs and organizations so I would advise students to get involved because networking opportunities are vast and worth it. Bang for the buck

One thing I've appreciated from many instructors is, not making the students but the most expensive books. There have been a few classes where we use a 16th edition to a book instead of the latest 18th edition. This is a difference in about 50% of the cost.

    What to do for fun

There are always little shops that are selling their things on campus. There are many clubs to become a part of as well. The students at PCC are very involved with the campus and the school politics.

Prior to enrolling in classes, I would considered going on rateyourprofessor.com and seeing what the students say about the professors. Just like any campus, there are good teachers and not so good one. This will enable you to choose the teacher that is best suited for your learning style.

    Food and Dining

Pasadena City College is surrounded by many popular food chains like Carl's Jr, McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Starbucks, etc. Students also have to option to eat in one of the school's on-campus cafeterias, who provide equally delicious food. I highly suggest the school's chicken quesadillas in their piazza in the CC Building.

    Dorm Life

Unfortunately, Pasadena City College is a community college without on-campus housing. Maybe one day in the nearer future, the Board of Trustees will decided to pass a building project for on-campus housing to be built. We can only hope!

    Academic Rigor

Students often have this misconception that community colleges are easier than a university. I will put that rumor to rest! The workload and academic rigor at Pasadena City College rivals that of many universities, if not higher or harder.

    In three sentences

Pasadena City College provides a wonderful learning experience, despite its many budget problems and short falls. Students can expect to grow, not only as students, but as young productive adults in our society. Be prepared to enter this school with a particular mindset and leaving with a completely different one!

    Campus Safety

I hope the Pasadena City College adopts an entry system that accepts only students, professors, and guests with approval. Even though student polices walk around and watch for security, some suspicious people show up and scare students.

    Clubs and Activities

Students will be able to enjoy many club activities in Pasadena City College. I only know about art exhibitions from art classes and fashion show held by fashion design classes but I'm sure there are many other activities from swimming class and music classes. Students will be able to participate in these activities to show their work or participate as audience.

Great for these types of students

As I mentioned previously, art students and fashion students will find Pasadena City College helpful if they want to learn little bit before they transfer to art colleges or other 4 year colleges. Students in other majors will find this college helpful as well. I did not know what major to choose when I graduated from high school. So I decided to try fashion design in Pasadena City College, and found that I really like fashion design as I begin to take more fashion classes. Like I did, students who haven't chosen their future goals will like this college because they can get many opportunities to experience in many classes offered in Pasadena City College.

    Food and Dining

Student cafeteria is good. There are two cafeterias in Pasadena City College. One in inside and the other one in outside. Many students and even professors buy their food from student cafeteria. I have tried pizzas and fries and these tasted good. These cafeterias also have packed sandwiches, fruits, snacks, and drinks. Sometimes students get tired of school food and walk out to get food from Carl's Junior and McDonald. There are also many other fast food stored around campus so students will not have much difficulty to get food.

    Academic Rigor

Generally it depends on who teaches the specific class and the students' effort to perform good in classes. If students really try to show the teachers their effort and willing to get a good grade in classes, they will be fine. But I recommend that they carefully look up the professors under professor rating sites since some teachers might not meet the students' expectation.

    Tips for prospective students

This college will be good especially for students in art major and fashion design majors. Art students will be able to learn from Pasadena Art Center teachers who also teach classes in Pasadena City College. Fashion design students will be able to experience and learn a lot about fashion from professional teachers who already have experience in fashion industry.

    In three sentences

Pasadena City College offers many classes taught by teachers with much knowledge about what they are teaching. It gives students opportunities to get prepared to transfer to 4 year colleges through taking classes and counseling programs. Students will be able to learn and get prepared enough for their majors in colleges they are planning to transfer.

Good. Not bad, not stellar. For women walking alone to cars in garage at night, ask for an escort or walk with another woman, especially to the Del Mar parking structure. Theft is problem here, even from padlocked lockers in the locker rooms, so watch your things carefully.

Great for these types of students

Good place to be if you are driven and not intimidated by red tape, delays and bureaucracy. Focused and goal oriented students with some experience of the world, ideally adults who have already been employed in the private sector, can excel here. Also a great JC for science and nursing students, great faculty and facilities for these specialties.

Best girls bathrooms on campus - just inside the front door of the L building. If you need a place to study, the Social Sciences Learning Center in the C building has computers, desks and a generally attentive staff. If you need to decompress between classes the gallery in the new arts building offers a little bit of zen space at no cost.

    Bang for the buck

Rivals education you would receive at a decent CSU at less than half the price. If you choose professors carefully you can find Ivy quality classes at $46 per unit, worth it to do the research. Books are overpriced at the bookstore and available across the street at BookMart for a 15% discount.

    What to do for fun

Not a lot of recreational activities - some clubs and student organizations but not the campus for socials or dances. Make a date with classmates to meet in Old Town, plenty more to do and convenient to campus.

    Food and Dining

Not the best or healthiest selection of any type of food or drink. There are decent to very good restaurants and shops located along Colorado Blvd across the street from the campus that offer better fare but not the widest selection. Best advice is bring your own.

    Academic Rigor

Depends on the department and the professor, so do your research carefully when selecting classes. Recent pedagogical improvements to the Honors Scholar program have taken it to the next level, and it is an excellent resource for success driven students.

    Tips for prospective students

You will need help to be successful here; use the transfer centers, the counselors who offer hours in the Social Sciences learning center and maybe pay for private counseling to help you navigate the process. Educators, for the most part, are committed and stellar; administration, on the other hand, can be a bit difficult to work with - don't be discouraged! Scour the website for information, go to every seminar and information session, and join at least one of the transfer success programs like Honors Scholars or First Year Experience - get help.

    In three sentences

Decent campus with a strong array of course offerings, but academic politics have made it a tougher place to get an education than it should be. A great resource for focused and goal driven students of all ages and backgrounds, but can be hard for students who are uncertain of their direction or who lack assertiveness. If you know what you want and are ready to pursue it, go here.

People I know from private schools have transferred to PCC because they did not recieve a challenge there and at PCC they did. School names do not matter, but also you need to choose professors that will challenge you!

    Campus Safety

    Okay. There's campus police sporadically.

    Clubs and Activities

Usual politic clubs, ethnic clubs, health clubs (Red Cross), etc.

Great for these types of students

Students who are on top of their game but are waiting for the right moment to move (forward). Students who take into consideration of their future but are deciding to wait and take the frugal choice and calculating their moves will thrive in PCC. You should have an idea of where you want to go. There are many students who are stuck at PCC for 4-5 years or more because they didn't plan what classes to take and didn't plan their schedules aggressively. Eventually time piles on and people filter in and out of the school and there are students still waiting to get the course necessary to transfer. Know your options. Take GEs, get your AA (don't leave PCC without anything!), and transfer. Don't take classes because you want to. Choose what you have to first, and what you want later.

    Food and Dining

Prices varies. Not much variety for healthy food. Multiple dining location.

    Academic Rigor

Doable. Some classes are taught at a graduate level while others feels like you're back in middle school. If you choose classes wisely and want to challenger yourself, you will meet with academic rigor. Unfortunately, it is hard to find such classes and such professors willing to motivate and prepare you for four-year universities.

    Tips for prospective students

It's okay to go into PCC not knowing what you want to do with your life, but once there, PCC does not allow much time for uncertainty. If students want to transfer quickly, they must evaluate their majors and prospective career choices early on. Don't get fool by the junior college environment and allow yourself to slack off because the longer you wait, the harder it is to get classes and transfer out.

    In three sentences

Great stepping stone, financially and academically, for students who are uncertain nor ready to pursue a four-year university. Challenging if students choose to apply him/herself and take rigorous courses from intellectual professors. Rewarding if one is openminded.

AGS! Alpha gamma sigma is an honor program at PCC. If you have the GPA and you have the time, join! A certain amount of community service hours will qualify you to put the honor on your transcript.

    Food and Dining

The food is pricey, but what campus isn't? There are restaurants for you across the street.

    Dorm Life

    Unfortunately, I did not dorm.

    Academic Rigor

It will depend on the class and professor you are taking. It will also depend on whether or not you are willing to put in the necessary effort.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of your professor's office hours! They are there to help you succeed!

    In three sentences

Pasadena city college has definitely expanded into a wonderful college during the past few years. Although I've been here for about almost four years now, the classes and professors have been very educational and inspirational. I will definitely miss all my friends and professors once I transfer out of here!

PCC is very clean and professional. Classes are very hard to obtain due to high student volume, but the teachers are high quality. Overall this is a very good school if you're able to get classes.

    Academic Rigor

It's a challenging school overall, so do not expect easy A's without hard work. But if you want to prepare to transfer to a prestigious university, it's definitely a great college to go to.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are currently in high school, be sure that you talk to your high school counselor and see if you are able to join the pathway program which helps you to get your classes first.

Pasadena City College is a challenging class that offers great quality education. However, due to the increasing number of students, it has been difficult to get the desired class and transfer within 2 years.

Campus police who even escort you to your car after those late night classes. YAY!

    Clubs and Activities

    TOOONS of club opportunites

Great for these types of students

Driven. Science majors. Independent students. and everybody else too.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Smoke free campus, so that's cool. Library rocks. Lots of places to sit and study/hang out.

    Bang for the buck

Awesome fin aid opportunities make it totally worth your while. (also PCC is one of the top community colleges in the state). ASG is also awesome and offers neat services especially during finals week (like free massages, therapy puppies, and free testing materials before and during finals week)

    What to do for fun

Old Pasadena district is right down the road. A quick 10 minute bus ride or car ride. Lots of shopping, dining, and movie theaters. Also a nice quad and grass area for just hanging out.

    Food and Dining

The school cafeteria has excellent food, but it can get pretty pricey eating on campus daily. Lots of other food options in the area including fast food, a 7-eleven, and a 99 cent store down the street.

    Dorm Life

    (I lived off campus)

    Academic Rigor

The professors at PCC will push you to be your best. Don't be afraid to build relationships with them. Good rapport with your teachers will help you to be your best. PCC is also notorious for its study groups. The library offers study rooms which can be reserved in advance for small focused studying. Be prepared to try at PCC, you're going to have to.

    Tips for prospective students

-Meet with a guidance counselor!!! Their help is more than valuable in staying on track to achieve your academic goals -Have a plan b, c, and plan d. Like all community colleges it can be difficult to get the classes you need in your first few semesters. Build meaningful units to get those hard to reach classes a little later on. -Be prepared to make compromises. Taking a 7-8am math class four days a week might suck a lot, but you'll be glad you took the class when you did (take it from someone who had to...) -HAVE FUN with your classes. This is YOUR education, it will only be as interesting and as meaningful as you make it.

    In three sentences

Pasadena City College is a diverse, lively, and nurturing school. With a wide variety of club, extra-curricular, and sports opportunities PCC caters to every student's individual needs. PCC also offers an excellent and diverse course catalog that can help prepare students for transfer, or degree completion.

    Bang for the buck

Although PCC has its flaws in many ways, it is definitely a school where you will get the most bang for you buck. A lot of the people I know qualify for the BOGS waiver so their school is free.

    What to do for fun

Walk around old town pasadena and explore Los Angeles!

    Food and Dining

Food at PCC is disgusting. Food around PCC is equally as bad unless you like fast food and chain stores.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is literally non-existent, there are no dorms.

    Academic Rigor

I'm not quite sure why people think that community college courses are easy. I was in Advanced Placement courses and many honors courses throughout high school, and have been often regarded as a stellar student. And even I struggle here.

    Tips for prospective students

Brace yourselves, Pasadena City College is not easy. It's difficult to get classes unless you fall under one of the categories that will provide priority registration, and you have to be careful about which professors you choose. Make sure that you are extremely persistent because you don't want to be one of those students that are stuck here forever.

    In three sentences

Pasadena City College is not for those with a weak will or those who need guidance. If you come here, you need to have a grit stronger than you have ever imagined, an even stronger persistence in face of adversity, and the strongest sense of self. If you do this, you will succeed, and you will go far.
