Great for these types of students

students who are afraid of huge campus. Students to want to know everyone

    Tips for prospective students

Be ready to be nurtured by the community. Because the campus is small, everyone is a family.

    Bang for the buck

If this means its worth the money then i guess it is, but I say college really should not cost this much.

    Am enjoying being here

Even though the smell of manure can sometimes be bad, you will generally get used to it. It is worth it because the mountain air is amazing.

    Am learning a lot

Not only am I learning educational material from wonderful professors but I am always learning how to live and manage my time on a small campus in the middle of nowhere.

    Campus Safety

the campus is very safe. the campus police does rounds regularly, only for illegal activity rather than violence.

    Bang for the buck

you get the penn state education with the price of a smaller campus. there are several people here to help you learn if you ever need help.

    What to do for fun

there are several activities that are sponsored by the school and are free for students. you can also spend time in friend's rooms since you won't have to travel far to see them. if you have a car, you can always find some fun off campus.

    Food and Dining

the food is good and does have some variety but it will get old to you from eating mostly the same things over and over. however, they've recently been trying to bring more types of food.

    Dorm Life

the dorms are very close knit and it's easy to make friends. despite the fact that this is a small campus, there will always be someone to talk to and to become friends with.

    Academic Rigor

the instructors are very helpful and are always happy to help. there is also a very good academic support center that can provide tutoring and even someone to talk to when you need guidance.

    Tips for prospective students

use the time at this smaller penn state campus to develop good study skills. if you decide to move to a larger campus or school, you will need a good balance between academic time and your social life.

    In three sentences

this campus is small and family oriented and maintains the principles that a large penn state campus would have. be sure to stay focused, even during your first semester, and keep all of your goals in mind so you don't lose track of yourself and who you want to be.

    In three sentences

Penn State Mont Alto is a beautiful school and i cant wait to go there. I've learned so much just going there and talking to the advisors and the financial aid Mr's. Gilland. This college has one of the most percentages of graduates and one of the least percentages of transfer and dropouts. I'm extremely happy to be accepted to this school and can't wait to start this fall.

    Greek Life

I do not think they offer organizations here at Penn State Mont Alto.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

If you're used to city living, it will take a lot of time adjusting as I still am because the Penn State Mont Alto is located in the mountains.

    Bang for the buck

It can get pretty expense for out-of-state students, but it's worth every penny.

    What to do for fun

There are places like Chambersburg and Hagerstown that the school takes bus trips to about every weekend. Take advantage of these free trips especially if you are new to the area. Also, as stated before above, always take advantage of the events on campus and get involved in clubs and organizations. It is a great way to meet friends.

    Food and Dining

The food is fairly good and there are different varieties in the Millstream Cafe. There are things that vary from salads, soups, sandwiches, pizza, and hot meals at dinner time. It is also a great hang-out spot for you and your friends to get some down time.

    Dorm Life

The best part about dorm life is friends. Some of the best people that you will meet in your lifetime will be there. The dorms themselves are always neat and there are Residence Assistants on call 24/7 for your convenience.

    Academic Rigor

All of the teachers are respectful and give you their full, undivided attention if you have a concern or a question. They are not only your teachers at Mont Alto, but also long time friends that you can refer back to in the future for advice. Don't be afraid to talk to your teachers and update them on how everything is going with your school work. Take advantage of their office hours!

    Tips for prospective students

Always do not fret to meet new people! Who knows, a new acquaintance could be your new best friend. Also. do not hesitate to get involved with the campus. You will get rewarded for your accomplishments. Even though the campus is small and there is not much to do, having a closely knit friend group will get you through. I have met some of the best people in my life at Mont Alto. Do not wait till the last minute to get things done. You will learn all of your material at a better pace as well as being up to date on all of your studies.

    In three sentences

Penn State Mont Alto offers all that you need in any other university. The student to teacher ratio is around 1:31. The scenery is great and the professors are all welcoming and enjoy meeting you, You are not just a number, you are a name and a friend to all those that are involved at the campus.

    Bang for the buck

Penn State has the highest in state tuition of any state university. However you are getting the name. People always recognize Penn State for their excellent academic program.

    What to do for fun

Mont Alto IS a secluded campus. While there are malls nearby, most fun is student activities and interactions on campus. It can be somewhat laid back at times, but it's a very tight knit student community so that helps.

    Food and Dining

At Mont Alto campus, there is the main dining area (The Mill) and a coffee shop (Cafe Java). The mill has pretty decent hours and there are usually a few good options. The fresh salad bar is something I frequently take advantage of.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are ok. Nothing spectacular, but it's a place to live. I've definitely seen much worse at other colleges.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are smaller sized so professors can get to know each student individually and become aware of their capabilities. Each student is pushed to their potential and must be able to perform up to Penn State standards.

    Tips for prospective students

Mont Alto is a smaller campus and is somewhat secluded. While it is an excellent campus for being in a position in a club and taking classes, the social aspect isn't what it might be if you were to attend a different Penn State campus.

    In three sentences

Penn State Mont Alto is an excellent campus because you get the Penn State name without being completely overwhelmed. It is a small campus so the education is more one on one due to class sizes being smaller. You also get more time to interact with professors which can be beneficial to not only you academic career but your professional career as well.

Weistling is said to be haunted by the lady.

    Bang for the buck

Mont Alto is a small campus.

    What to do for fun

You could have a pick up game of sand court volleyball or soccer, or you could wander around the beautiful campus in the spring when all the flowers on the trees are blooming.

    Food and Dining

The food is not all that great. Mostly fried food.

    Dorm Life

Generally dorm life goes pretty well. The freshman dorm usually has the most adjustments.

    Academic Rigor

The classes aren't too hard. The classes that are more difficult are the calculus and physics and chem classes.

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend this campus for any first-year student new to the college world, especially if you are local.

    In three sentences

Most of the staff is friendly and helpful. This campus is good for freshman coming into the college environment. The volleyball, baseball, and softball program are strong.

    What to do for fun

Go to the activities and events held at the school, participate in clubs and sports, get a bunch of friends and have a group hangout, or sign up to go to trips to New York or Hershey.

    Food and Dining

The food is decent and the place is pretty nice and clean.

    Dorm Life

    The dorms are pretty proficient.

    Academic Rigor

There are certainly classes that are pretty laid back or you simply just find it to be easy. But there are definitely difficult courses that can get you stressed. But the tutors and professors are there to help.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to tutors or talk to the professors. They are certainly glad to help and are willing to assist you in any way. Study chapter outlines as well as the chapter itself can help you a long way. Study with groups are a great way to do well on those exams.

    In three sentences

The campus is on average, a small community and has small classes. The scenery and the landscape is absolutely beautiful. Great one-on-one sessions with the professors and a great group of tutors are offered if in any case someone needs help.

    What to do for fun

If your looking to have fun you can always visit your friends at there dorm room. You can also start your own campus club and if enough people join it could be established as a new campus club for whomever wants to join. You can also go to the library and use the computers for fun. Also the campus holds different activities and events that you could attend and in some cases they give out prizes

    Food and Dining

There are a variety of food selections at The Mill in Month Alto. The students prepare the food and you choose exactly what you want. The dining area is big and you have the choice to eat wherever you want on campus. The food is good as well as other snacks and delicious treats to go along with your meal.

    Dorm Life

The dorms here at Mont Alto are not as spacious as dorms on other campuses but they are cozy. I advise that if you are looking to study at night to do so in the study room because the halls get a little loud from people having fun. There is also off campus housing which are pretty much the same except they have a little more room. Other than the noise the dorm life is awesome

    Academic Rigor

There is a lot of encouragement from the professors. As a young adult you will not be forced to attend your classes. If you want to do good you have to commit because no one is going to do the work for you. Be responsible for your own education and do what is best for you and have fun doing it.

    Tips for prospective students

I encourage students who are looking into this particular campus to stay focus on there work. The sources you need are all around you and if you are having trouble someone will be glad to point you in the right direction. Ask questions and don't be afraid or embarrassed to use your tutor because you are not alone. Help fellow classmates along the way if you can.

    In three sentences

Mont Alto is a small campus for those who'd rather attend a less crowded atmosphere. The students and staff are very helpful and they are also great listeners. Everything is close by and you won't have any trouble fitting in.

    Campus Safety

The campus security are constantly circling campus and making sure everything is secure. Most students agree that the Mont Alto campus is safe thanks to the police on campus.

    Greek Life

Penn State Mont Alto has no Greek Life.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many activities on campus, THON being the largest club, but most Penn State Mont Alto students are involved in at least one club, most are multi involved.

Great for these types of students

The Mont Alto campus is great for students who enjoy being in nature, the campus is covered in trees and sits at the bottom of the mountain, it is not located in a city by any means, there are shopping and dining near by but not within 10 miles. It is a very secluded campus that is peaceful.

    Bang for the buck

I think the education at Penn State Mont Alto is very good for the price of tuition, class sizes are small, professors know their students on a personal level, and there are many options for students who need help in classes or their personal life.

    What to do for fun

There are many activities on campus students can take advantage of just for being a PSU student, the most popular things to do are join clubs, esically THON, watching sporting events, and attending planned activities such as bingo or bowling which are free to all students with a PSU ID card.

    Food and Dining

The food in the Millstream cafe' is of good quality, it sometimes lacks variability, but the food presented each day is very tasty.

    Dorm Life

I do not personally live on campus but have been in and stayed in the dorms many times, it is college, not a 5 star hotel on a vacation, they are clean and reasonable sized but nothing extravagant. Having friends on your floor in the dorms is what makes the experience better for students.

    Academic Rigor

The campus pushes students to their potential and to get the most out of their education experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Getting to know your professors is the best advice i have, with small class sizes most of your professors will know you by name, talk to them and make sure you know their office hours and where their office is located. Do not be afraid to ask them for assistance and the Academic Support Center on campus is a great resource most students on campus use.

    In three sentences

Penn State Mont Alto is a great campus to begin your college experience at. The campus offers small class sizes, very helpful professors, and many opportunities you can not experience at other colleges. The Mont Alto campus is a small and personable campus that is a good to begin at as a step to moving to University Park.

    Campus Safety

I feel the campus is very safe. The police are always patroling all around campus. If you need help, there are a few blue emergency boxes that you can get to fast from almost anywhere on campus. They send text and email alerts that will get the word out fast if there is anything going on.

Great for these types of students

I'm an adult learner. The academic support center is very useful if you need help in any class. They have peer and professional tutors that will take the time to help you understand. The professors are also there to help you; just make an appointment or go to see them during their office hours. Take advantage of all the help that is out there for you. If you don't, you only have yourself to blame.

    Bang for the buck

I feel that Mont Alto is comparable to the other colleges in the area. I don't agree that you should have to pay an activities fee if you don't live on campus and participate in any of the activities that they offer, but you can't really do anything about that.

    Food and Dining

There is alot of variety at the Mill. They have anything from subs, soups, pizza, cookies, candy, etc.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are challenging and you have to stay on-top of your work. Don't fall behind or you will be in trouble. Just because this is a branch campus, don't think of it as a community college or think it's a joke. This IS Penn State. You are expected to be able to keep up with your work and not slack off. You will only be hurting yourself. Get help if you need it.

    Tips for prospective students

Show up to class early, work hard, and stay late if you have to. Success isn't given, it's earned.

    In three sentences

Penn State Mont Alto is a great school that is tucked away in Franklin County. The campus is small, and everyone is friendly. You will have to work hard in all of your classes, but it will definately pay off in the long run.

    Campus Safety

    Very safe campus.

    Greek Life

    None

    Clubs and Activities

Campus life offers a lot of activities like movies in the auditorium and free trips to bowling. Besides that, however, there is not much.

Great for these types of students

Commuters, those looking to focus on ONLY school, and introverts.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I suggest hanging out in the pool room at Weistling. Weistling is the oldest building on campus located directly in the center. The people who hang out there are the coolest people, and it allows you an escape from the stuck up or country individuals.

    Bang for the buck

This campus has Penn State prices for a community college environment.

    What to do for fun

I hope you have money when you decide to come to this campus. You have to drive a minimum of 20 miles to get anywhere! The closest small (Chambersburg) is about 25 minutes away and there is not much to it. It's very small and the theater there only plays 3 or 4 movies at a time. The next closest mall (Hagerstown) is about 40 miles away. Although it a decent size, it is quite the drive. As a matter of fact, you will probably end up in Hagerstown for most of your fun. Besides shopping of going out to eat, there is not much to do. The campus does offer activities every week that you could participate in. The biggest one is a trip to New York City. It's only $10 for the transportation there and it is definitely a fun experience. However, once again, you have to have money.

    Food and Dining

They have gotten a lot better with food. At least on the week. There are a lot of options, although not very healthy ones, and the options that are healthy are VERY expensive. However, since it is a commuter school, if you are one of the few people staying on campus during the weekend, be prepared. The only serve breakfast until noon, and after 2, the only thing open is the grill and pizza station. The salad, sandwich, and demo (usually pasta) station are closed for the entirety of friday night, saturday and sunday. The hours are also very frustrating. Sunday-Thursday they are open until 9pm. On Friday and Saturday, they close at 7pm. Considering this is only only place to eat for about 10 miles (besides a few pizza places) this makes being a college student very frustrating.

    Dorm Life

Mont Alto Hall is a terrible dorm. It is loud in all parts of the dorm of al hours of the day. People blast loud music, move furniture around and damage the schools property (which everybody pays for). The gates are the suites. Penn Gate II is a great dorm. The only one with AC in each room, and a shared bathroom. The only problem is the cost. The housing and food services also make it very hard to want to live on campus. There are a lot of rules (can have company in your room only 3 nights in a row) and you are forced to be with people who you probably wont like. As a sophomore I have been through 5 roommates. Its tiring. If you can, live at APEX. APEX is a condo development only a block from the campus. Although that is where all of the parties are, it's cheaper, and you have your own apartment.

    Academic Rigor

Unless you are going into a major like Engineering, the classes are very easy. However, there is a lot of work to go along with it. Taking 19 credits is a pretty easy feat. But make sure you stay on top of all your classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips for prospective students. Do not get into a relationship while living on campus. The campus life frowns upon couples, and it is very hard to maintain a relationship with that weight. Also, avoid Mont Alto Hall at all costs. It is the most ghetto housing you could possibly choose. Although it is the cheapest, you definitely give up a lot choosing this. Finally, be involved. Join all of the clubs you can (even though there are about 3 campus wide), and go to all of the activities you can make it to.

This school is a roller coaster ride. If you are just looking for an education, it is a great place. If you are looking for anything else, look away.

    Campus Safety

If safety is under the guidelines of let me give you a ticket for no reason You cannot work on your car on campus, or wash it, there be it. You get fined $25 dollars for anything Had a bomb threat this year, took 8hours to let the residents back in the room and the threat was posted on social media for 6 hours before campus police found out about it. They have blue safety poles at night for people that feel uncomfortable walking at night (i.e. rapists, attackers,,robbers, etc.) but if you are getting attacked these poles are at the worst spots. No where near the residence halls, the red button touches 911 but by the time you explain your situation you would have gotten taken.

    Greek Life

    NON EXISTENT!!!!!!!!

    Clubs and Activities

Many many clubs, too few people to keep them running, unless you like a club of 4 people as popular as SGA. or like woodsmens team (chances are if you know what this is, you are a part of it), then don't worry about clubs.

Great for these types of students

FORESTERS Glorified community college students that got accepted nowhere else and can say they went to a university Nursing is decent, Hagerstown Area Community College is better and so is University Park Students that want to be secluded, don't care about not having a vehicle, and are willing to listen to immature, horseplaying people at all hours of the night. If you did not get accepted at any other college and need a place to go, come here, you will definitely get accepted and fit right in.

    Haunted Wiestling building

    Bang for the buck

I pay 28000 to go to this campus and I honestly feel like they should be paying me to live here and go here. I had to move to this campus for population and housing reasons at University Park where I was originally accepted however, when I try to get moved up or threaten to transfer, my response is as follows You forfeited your right to go to University Park once you accepted to go to Mont Alto for a year. Please for the love of god, do not fall for that trap, they keep you for a year. But the add another year, as well as the 2-3 semesters you get put behind for your major because the classes are not offered here for your major and the admissions is so low, you cannot get funding for these classes. Some professors are in it to keep kids all 4 years at Mont Alto rather than get moved up to University Park where they belong. There is an intricate system with Penn State and the only way to succeed is if you start at main campus. If not, you will fall behind and suffer, and you will know it.

    What to do for fun

Get into a relationship where you hang out all day and every day. I hope you like videogames, scenic walks with yourself, or staring at all the closed buildings on campus at the most convenient hours for college students. They advocate a dry campus however to survive this place, you have no choice but to go to APEX and drink your liver to a bloody pulp just so you can sleep in all Saturday and sunday and hope you don't wake up before 1130am or you have to wait to even eat cafeteria food. Campus activities are there however, most are not worth going to unless it is bowling, the annual new York trip, the annual Hershey park trip, or if you go to Walmart in Hickville to watch the hillbillys buy generic everything. The Walmart is 10 minutes away however the bus driver tends to take 45 minutes and I do not understand why. you will also have no place to put your bags and you hear 7 different headphones blaring in a silent vehicle. Am I going to Walmart or am I going to prison in the incarceration bus? I honestly am so bored on this campus, if it wasn't for my girlfriend who lives around the area, I would have lost my crap by now. Unless you like playing videogames or going off campus to eat at a restaurant or get gas and say Hey, look at all that cow crap by the road, then look away from this campus.

    Food and Dining

4 cases of food poisoning this year. 4 week schedule of all foods just rotated each week. My doctor told me it was healthier to go to SHEETZ every day rather than eat the mill food. Closes early on Fridays at 7pm as well as Saturdays. Sundays-Thursdays til 9pm. Food closes an hour before closing time anyways. They have all of the good food closed those days Friday-Sunday. All they have is pizza which sits out for 4 hours and burns, or fried and grilled food like cheesesteaks. So unhealthy. Going to the gym will negate itself once you consume this slop. once again, I hate to be mean, but the realism is here and most students will have these opinions but will not speak up. Do not let the Lion Ambassadors tell you otherwise, they get paid to tell you how great this campus is. The food staff will openly tell you that they do not serve good food on the weekends because there is not enough students to put the labor into making good food for us. I either put a dent into my wallet on the weekend or I starve or eat 7 bags of Cheez-its.

    Dorm Life

Mont Alto Halls is the most ratchet and ghetto dorm rooms. They are loud and all you hear is yelling. bathroom doors slamming shut, and the blow dryers all the time. All the cement and hard wood floors carry the noise horribly. Stay at the expensive PG2 or APEX. You hear blaring music at the halls until 2am most nights.

    Academic Rigor

Unless you get accepted into the honors class and do a few honors options, you will not get sufficient intellectual stimulation and unfortunately this will carry into later years at Penn State. Some professors really try however, they have to dumb down their assignments and lessons for the people that really should be going to community college and not a Penn State campus. DO NOT TAKE CLASSES WITH PROFESSOR LABALOKIE UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO AND DO NOT TAKE BUSINESS HERE, RATHER TAKE IT AT ANOTHER SCHOOL UNLESS YOU ARE AT UNIVERSITY PARK IN SMEAL.

    Tips for prospective students

DO NOT GO HERE!!!! PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR SANITY AND YOUR FUTURE BANK ACCOUNT AND INTELLECT. This campuses acceptance rate is too high and we all suffer with mediocre mental stimulation because the average student cannot handle the academic rigor of college. Hence why they are at this campus. The AP and IB programs in high school are way more challenging than this campus. They don't even take that many IB/AP scores, so essentially you can be forced to stay down here for your 2 years and suffer. I gave this campus a shot but I hate to be negative but this is honestly realistic. This is why I am transferring to University of Maryland

    In three sentences

This campus is super small and the acceptance rate is very high. This makes academic rigor non-existent and campus life is also nonexistent as well. Not a good penn state school, should have left the land to the trees. No other Penn State campus really knows we exist. We are.. the fake Penn State
