Categories Comments Great for these types of students Portland State is great for students who want to be in the middle of it all, and who want to meet many different types of people. Also for people that want to experience the campus feel but be right inside the urban society at the same time.
Tips for prospective students Keep in mind that you actually need to take at least 15 credits to stay on track for graduation, but do not overload yourself either. Try to take one fun class every term. That way you can relax at least one class period a week, because sometimes there isn't time outside of your classes to relax.
Bang for the buck College can be very expensive, but I think that with all the options Portland State has to offer that everyone can find their passion.
Am enjoying being here I love the atmosphere. Downtown Portland is such an excepting place, people of all ages and walks of life live here and fit in. My classes have multiple age groups and that creates a very unique learning experience.
Am learning a lot When it comes to how much you learn I believe that it is up to you to take classes that are interesting and a little bit challenging, because the classes that are easy tend to get boring and not teach you as much.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students adventurous, dedicated, passionate, those who believe in a cause, those who want to a school that focuses on education and does not revolve around its sports teams, those who like the city and those looking for new experiences.
Tips for prospective students If you choose this school, don't overload yourself with courses in your first term. You will want to only take about 12 credits (that is full time) to give yourself time to get used to studying AND to be free to explore the city and campus.
Bang for the buck While they aren't 100% streamlined in all processes, this school really tries to give you what you need, and tailor your education to your specific goals.
Am enjoying being here Campus is diverse and has something for everyone. Tons of clubs and groups to join, music in the park and is in the heart of downtown so everything is within walking distance.
Am learning a lot Depending on how much you apply yourself you can really learn a lot. You learn from everyone and about everything, very interesting approach to teaching here.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for commuter students, non traditional, and student that aren't into the party school atmosphere.
Tips for prospective students Apartments in the city are expensive to plan ahead. The grocery stores are also expensive. Textbooks are expensive try to avoid the PSU Bookstore. Don't expect much school spirit at this school. Join a club or organization so that you don't fell disconnected.
Bang for the buck I think the college is worth the money all though PSU doesn't offer as much financial aid as the bigger universities. Textbooks are really expensive too. Living in Portland also adds to the bill.
Am enjoying being here I love Portland there is always something going on and there is something for everyone. PSU is a great school with excellent professors and provides a good education.
Am learning a lot Small Classes are great and the professors seem over qualified which is great. Make sure to become involved in the school to get the full benefit of the learning enviroment.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I chose Portland mainly because of its music and art scene. Almost every band I like visits here at one time or another, and the city bleeds creativity. There are opportunities everywhere. However, the college is in no way steered toward a specific group of people. You can meet people of all sorts who attend here with one thing in common: they love Portland.
Tips for prospective students Find out what sort of financial aid you can get in coming here. Be sure you have an idea on what sort of major you're interested in, because the prerequisite classes are extremely specific and need to get done with as soon as you can, so that all the other necessary classes are available to you. Register for the earliest possible orientation/registration day. As a freshman, its hard to get into many of the classes you'll need for your major requirements if you come late in the season.
Bang for the buck For out-of-state students like me, the price for tuition is steep. However, financial aid programs like the WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange Program) make it possible for families with low-incomes. I highly recommend finding out what sort of financial aid you can get before getting your heart set on attending here if money may be a problem.
Am enjoying being here I really like the college itself. The campus is beautiful. We're surrounded by trees and interesting buildings. The park blocks in the middle of campus is a great break from the streets, and excellent place to hang out. The location is really the main selling point for me. We are literally downtown. The campus is located in what's called the Fareless Square, which means we can hop on the MAX and get taken to almost any location downtown, the mall, and a short distance over the river for free. (After that, you can just buy a cheap ticket to get where you need to go, like the airport.) A large concert venue is a few minutes away, and you can hop on a bus to get to anywhere else in Portland. We also just got a brand new recreation and exercise facility which is stunningly modern and free for students!
Am learning a lot Classes are varied, each student is required to enroll in what is called a Freshman Inquiry. Its kind of a homeroom class, of only about 20-30 students. These take care of a large number of general education credit requirements and are a great break from large lecture classes where you feel uncomfortable asking questions. There are 5 or so subjects to choose from, and all of them fulfill a large number of general education credit requirements.. (I'm in Sustainability!) Each FRINQ has a breakout Mentor Session, where the class is broken up even further to groups of 10 or twelve students with a mentor who gives us valuable info and helps us with any questions we have about the course. Starting off, as far as the rest of the courses go, the professors are dedicated to enriching us with information at comfortable speeds. As the classes get higher in number (205, 301, etc.) the pace speeds up considerably, but these classes were made with humans in mind, so it all is entirely manageable.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Portland State University is a great place for all students. It is very diverse. People from all over the world come there to study and pursue their interests. People that want to be in a medical field, engineering, law, all fit here and many many others. It is an opportunity for all who wants to enjoy life.
Tips for prospective students Students, who really want to learn and be successful in life, need to work hard with a desire to improve in academic level and life principles. Only working hard will bring someone to a desired success. Working hard, a person has an opportunity to climb up the social level and have a good enjoyable life meeting wants as well as basic needs. It is a journey, but it worth it.
Will enjoy being here I hope I will enjoy being here because my friends from school enjoyed it and advised me to go here. I hope to have a good time studying and enjoying myself while studying. It is going to be a great time that I will remember for the rest of my life growing academically, developing personality, and looking forward to promising future,
Will learn a lot Portland State University is located right in the heart of the city. It has diverse place where people from different places can look for their studies and find their paths in life. It will provide a student with classes that he or she needs for a his or her career. It has varieties of study fields that will help a person to find his or her enjoyable path in life.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Active, studious, business oriented, social, ect...like I said before, this school has something for everyone. The only people who may not like it as well are those looking for a smaller school or one located in a college-town rather than the heart of downtown Portland. Otherwise, there is undoubtedly an aspect of this school for every type of student.
Tips for prospective students Truly take advantage of all that Portland State has to offer. Whether it's their multitude of advisors, classes, or activities. There are so many wonderful things this school has to give its students, I urge everyone to take full advantage of every bit of it.
Bang for the buck In comparison to many colleges, PSU is not terribly expensive. However, as a young college student I still feel the sting when tuition is due. That being said, the millions of opportunities offered at PSU, in my opinion, makes every cent worth it. Not only are the classes great, the events a blast, and the location unbeatable, Portland State has an unfounded number of connections to the surrounding businesses in the downtown area. This gives graduate as well as undergrads the priceless ability to move from school to career in a heartbeat.
Am enjoying being here I attended a private school from kindergarden all the way through my senior year. My graduating class was 80 kids, out of our approximately 300 student high school. Basically my entire high school was the size of most graduating classes. When I started at Portland State with its 28,000 plus student body, I wasn't sure how I was going to adapt. That being said, I have fallen in love with this school. I have made so many friends and it is so easy to get involved in pretty much anything you are interested in. I transitioned smoothly from my tiny high school to Oregon's largest University and I wouldn't change a thing.
Am learning a lot When you begin registering for classes the first thing you will notice is the unbelievably huge list of classes to choose from. There is literally something for everyone at this school. Not only that, there are multiple professors teaching the given class. That way, if you hear from your friend that Professor Man is a horribly boring lecturer but you had your heart set on taking Business Communications, have no fear, there are probably at least three other professors teaching that same class! All in all, I have learned a lot in my first year at PSU. The professors are truly devoted to their students succeeding and it shows in their passion for their job.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for open-minded students who wish to expand their knowledge, not just within their specific major but all-around.
Tips for prospective students In your first year I suggest take advantage of all the things orientation provides and definitely check out Party in the Park. There you can get acquainted with the many clubs PSU has, and I'm sure you will find something that interests you.
Bang for the buck The school is so large and offers so much, yet it is quite affordable and costs less than other schools in the Oregon. This school is money well spent.
Am enjoying being here This school is so open and is home to such a diverse group of people from all over the world. The staff are very welcoming and the students are nice and enjoy being here as much as I do, and that creates such a pleasing environment for optimal learning.
Am learning a lot This school offers a wide range of classes and with its University Studies program it is encouraged that you take advantage of that fact. This school not only wants you to expand your knowledge but your perspective as well.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never felt threatened on campus.
Greek Life We have a few fraternities and sororities on campus.
Clubs and Activities Endless amounts!
Great for these types of students Those who care about their impact on the world and those who care to make an impact on the world.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We start a little later in the year (last week of September) but there is always a week or two of campus wide celebrations before we come back to classes.
Bang for the buck All colleges are expensive these days and the student body at PSU is trying to ensure it doesn't become an unbearable burden for it's graduating students.
What to do for fun Anything- the University is located right in the downtown area and the public transportation is great.
Food and Dining On campus there is a dinning hall and food court but off campus there is the rest of Portland full of food carts and great dinning opportunities.
Dorm Life Many of our buildings are eco-friendly with renewable resources and materials.
Academic Rigor Students are held accountable for themselves and are encouraged to push to their own degree.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to talk to your classmates and professors. They can all help you find out more about the school, programs, and benefits.
In three sentences Portland State University is well integrated into the surrounding downtown community. The students, faculty, and staff are highly conciseness of their impact on the environment. There is always something new, progressive, and intriguing going on around campus!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students city people, self-motivated students, those who like dorm life, students who don't mind large campuses with tons of people
Tips for prospective students Apply very early! The application process takes a few weeks and the deadline for all scholarships is February 1st. Take the time to apply over winter break (or even November/December); even if you don't decide to go, it will save you a potential headache.
Bang for the buck Out of state tuition is killer, especially if you miss the scholarship deadline. The oregon residents and WUE scholarship students all say it's much cheaper than the other oregon schools, so for them, I'm sure it's worth it.
Am enjoying being here It's a great atmosphere; certainly a change from my small town and (in comparison to PSU) small community college. It was overwhelming the first week, but easy to get into the groove of things.
Am learning a lot I love all my professors here. Each of them has something unique to offer to the class that they teach-- and they always make themselves or their TA's available to you.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The school has a really great Science program. I am a General Biology major, and the university has a Master's Degree program. I am hoping to get my MS degree, and I might get it from Portland State University. I have also heard that it is a great college for people that are into the arts. A lot of music majors head to Portland State University. It's also good for people going into politics. Honestly, it is a bit of an all-around school. But like I said before, look into it before you commit.
Tips for prospective students For potential incoming students, I would just say make sure the school is right for you. Make sure you are all right with the location, the environment you will be in, the types of programs the school has to offer, etc. It's the same with choosing any college, really. Just make sure you like the school, and make sure it has what you're looking for. It is a great college, and it can benefit you a lot. Also, make sure you have a good work ethic. Make sure you do all your work and get your GPA up early. It's very difficult to boost your GPA in later years, so make sure you do well from the start. That's not to say don't have fun. You should always have room for fun. It's a great place for new positive experiences, make sure to take the right opportunities.
Bang for the buck Let's face it. College is going to be expensive no matter where you go. But for Oregon residents, Portland State University has a pretty decent tuition for a four-year university. Plus, there are a lot of options to lower tuition. For example, I chose not to live on campus, and that brings the price down a great deal. Being the great establishment it is, I believe that Portland State University is a really good deal for the price.
Am enjoying being here I really like the Portland State University campus. It is very diverse and very open. Plus it's downtown, you have a lot of options when it comes to your breaks from class. You can find tons of places to hang out or get lunch. It's a great location for the school. It's also a great place to meet people. The school provides a lot of availability, mobility, and, in a sense, a lot of freedom. There is really only one big con for Portland State University. The campus is not smoke-free, and being in downtown, Portland, there are a lot of smokers on campus. It's quite a problem for me, but there isn't much I can do. Other than that, like I said before, the campus being downtown is really great. It provides a great atmosphere and people can just take the chance to explore the city and learn and experience new things. It's a great place to be.
Am learning a lot Portland State University has provided me with a lot of education this past fall term. I am a Biology Major and I'm currently enrolled in the Principles of Biology sequence. The lectures are adequate, my professor was really great, and the labs were really laid back and fun. It has been a great experience so far being in this sequence, and I'm looking forward to winter term. Portland State University also has a library that is usually open until 11 PM, and it would be wise to take advantage of that. Also, the computer labs can be really helpful. From what I have seen during my time at Portland State University, the college provides a great environment for learning. The campus might be a bit overwhelming at first, but it is very easy to get used to. And once you know where everything is, you have a great deal of resources at your fingertips. Portland State University provides a lot of opportunities to take learning to the next level, it's up to the student to take those opportunities.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students To those who can't stand the idea of taking a couple years of Prerequisite classes such as English, science and math, PSU is a wonderful option. The University Studies program does, however, stay with you through all four years of the experience from Freshman Inquiry through Senior Capstones. This program does create a sense of community and allows you to explore possible interests for those who are not sure what they want to major in. Also, for the city dwellers and those who live in a small town and want an opposite pace of life, Portland State University is possibly the only urban campus that I know of the weaves itself into the city.
Tips for prospective students Take as many college transferring and AP classes as possible. To move up every year, one must take 15 classes a term. Full time student status at Portland State University is considered 12 credits. At the beginning of Freshman year, 12 credits are recommended. Transferring credits will ease the transition into the higher education process and save a lot of stress come registration time Sophomore year.
Bang for the buck With a massive library, multiple computer labs (one that is nearly open 24/7), a free tutoring center and the UNST mentor program, Portland State University doesn't hesitate to make the higher education experience an easier process than it has to be. Help can found through multiple resources; academic, personal or otherwise. Not only this, Portland State University has such a massive selection of majors to choose from that it's not impossible to fulfill multiple interests while studying here.
Am enjoying being here Portland State University prides itself for being an urban university that is in the heart of the largest city in Portland. There is always something to do on campus - whether it be a student organization activity or volunteer work. If campus life isn't suiting for you, though, the city of Portland surrounds you. The MAX, a light rail train that connects downtown Portland to the outskirts of the city, is free in the downtown area so there is no limit to what you can explore as soon as classes and campus activities end.
Am learning a lot Portland State University is a rather large university - with the population being that of the largest university in the state of Oregon - it has to offer a lot. One might think that since the university offers many courses intended for a large variety of majors, that the rate of education and how the classes are ran may be compromised for the size. This couldn't be further from the truth at Portland State University. The professors are extremely well educated on their subject and, to my pleasant surprise, graduate students that teach lower level classes are well prepared and trained to manage their classes as well. If you go to classes and pay attention, you will learn more than you expected.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you felt out of place in high school and never felt like you fit in, everyone fits in, in Portland are interested in art, music and culture. Like being in a big city
Tips for prospective students Be ready to have a lot of essays, Be open minded.
Bang for the buck I think that all college is too expensive, Portland State is one of the cheapest colleges in Oregon, that is if you are in state, if you are out of state then your tuition will be much higher. I think that for the amount we pay to go here we don't get enough. For one professors never respond to your emails. Spring term is coming up and I was curious about some art classes so I sent some teachers emails, that was around three weeks ago and none of them ever got back to me. The email addresses that I sent them to, was provided by the Portland State website. Another thing is that they tell you to explore different career options, which means to try out different types of classes. Say you want to try a digital page design class and you are an anthropology major, you can't take that class unless you get instructor approval, which as I said before is very hard to get since the professors never respond. So yes, I think we pay way to much.
Am enjoying being here I like being in downtown Portland, the campus is located right downtown so you're close to everything. I'm a sunshine girl, so the all the rain gets to me a bit, but for the most part it's bearable. I like the campus because it's downtown. I love Portland because it's so diverse, growing up I always felt out of place and different. In high school I was the nerdy art kid, but now I feel normal and appreciated for being into art and indie music. I feel like Portland is the place where all the artists, musicians, actors, and whatever else go.
Am learning a lot I feel that in some of the classes I'm learning a lot and in others they are just a waste of time. A lot is to be said for the teacher, I've had a few teachers that are really inspiring and a few that put me to sleep. At Portland State students are required to take a freshman inquiry class, which is basically like your English-writing class. Everyone that I know thinks it's a complete waste of time and I agree. Also along with this class you are required to take a mentor class which is another waste of time all together. I know english and writing are very critically important, but honestly we don't learn or do a lot of it in these classes.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This place is great for everyone be it nerd, artist, hipster, jock or anywhere in between. There's a little bit of something for everyone here.
Tips for prospective students Be patient, but be diligent. Things move at a Portland pace here and there's a lot of students to get through. Do your best to stand out, but don't give up if your initial efforts aren't perfect.
Bang for the buck It's a great place, the biggest trick is making sure that get what you want out of it. The issue I always see is people come here expecting the streets to be paved on gold and their destiny will be dropped in their lap. If you want your education to be worth something, you have to do the work that it calls for. With that being said, PSU has the tools needed to help students to achieve it, they just need to strive for it.
Am enjoying being here I'm a student who lives on campus and thought that I'd never like it, but it turns out that it's really nice. It's never real loud around here and there's always something to do. I came from a small town where you had to drive everywhere to get to things to do. Here everything is with walking distance. The school itself has its own movie theater, game room and bowling alley. It has it's own pub that features Rogue Brewing Company's Portland State Ale, the Farmer's Market is in the cent of campus every Saturday and there are live concerts held on campus usually once a week featuring any type of music you could want.
Am learning a lot Because the school calls for students to take university studies classes you end up having to take some classes that are completely outside of your major. For me I took Women's Studies and I'm really enjoying it. It's a class would have never tried otherwise but it has become my favorite. And it's little things like this that makes this school interesting.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck College is expensive, period. But compared to the larger universities, UO and OSU, it's less costly.
Am enjoying being here The environment is great and it's close to home. But the transportation can get a bit tiring.
Am learning a lot PSU has a lot of classes to choose from and they correlate with what your major is. There are advisers to help you with your major as well as answering any questions you have on school or specific classes.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students A diverse range of students. PSU has a very broad group of students that attend. There really isn't an ideal student for this college, everyone can fit in.
Tips for prospective students The bookstore is not part of the college. If at all possible buy your books elsewhere. Also, check with the teacher if you can use earlier editions, they are usually much cheaper but work just as well. Definitely check with a friend, other students, or websites on different teachers. Some teachers may work out great for you, others will not, to make sure you get the most out of your learning experience this will be important. Form a study group, or join one, they really will benefit you. If you know the subject material and don't think you need a study group you are still missing out. You benefit from being able to explain things to others so that you better understand it yourself.
Bang for the buck There are lots of extracurricular activities and clubs you can get into as well as the education being worth it. Even though some of the options they force students into paying, the best way to get the most out of your money is to use the resources available to you.
Am enjoying being here My experience here has been very positive so far. The administration side of things is usually very clear and easy to work through. The school side of things, you may want to check a website or with a friend to make sure you get the best instructor for your learning style. There is a diverse range of instructors for classes and it is important to find an instructor who will best fit you.
Am learning a lot Taking classes at PSU has helped me learn a lot, not only in my career field but also in other areas that I may have normally overlooked. There are courses that are required for your graduation that must be unrelated to your major. It really helps open the door to learn a great deal more and you are even able to apply something you wouldn't normally think about to your career. The teachers are well informed and able to answer questions either in class or outside of class.

Tips for prospective students Go to PSU if you want to move up rank in society
Bang for the buck The school has an accredited business school which is very impressive. The business school is much more affordable to attend than major schools with the same accreditation.
Am enjoying being here This school location is great. I like how professional the campus is.
Am learning a lot The teachers here only try to help you learn. They do the best they can to plant a seed of knowledge in you so you can know what to study further after you graduate.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Commuters, non-traditional/working students.
Tips for prospective students Don't come here if you're a commuter who needs a sense of support from the school. It's really hard to be an active student at this school when you are far away.
Bang for the buck This school has had a double in tuition costs in the past ten years. The school has spent a lot in recent years in developing student exercising facilities and freshman dormitories to attract students to the campus. It's not a good price. I recommend getting as many credits from community colleges and AP courses as you can, then transferring. But remember, of your 180 credits, you must have about 145 from PSU and you have to take like 45 of your last credits at PSU.
Am enjoying being here I didn't enjoy the student climate, simply because I was a commuter and it was really hard to stay involved in campus activities. This is the case for many students at PSU and there effort to involve students in activities reflects this.
Am learning a lot Portland State University is great if you're a commuter, seeking to get in school and get out with a degree. However, within my one year experience of the school, I found that it was vastly overpriced for the quality of educators. Although, it is possible to get more out of the school by doing the following: select classes that are smaller, higher level, and check out your professors on ratemyprofessor.com. It tends to be very accurate and has been spot on about the professors I had. It's not the school to go to for the traditional college experience, but I wouldn't rule it out as a valid and useful institution.

Food and Dining i would not personally know but from what i saw online it looked good.
Dorm Life i know nothing about this subject.

Categories Comments What to do for fun the things for fun here are roaming around downtown at night for a voodoo doughnut run. also, the school holds many fun events that you can attend where they give away free stuff! there is also omsi, oregon zoo, japanese gardens, and other sites that you can explore!
Food and Dining okay, our main dining hall isn't the best, but it has it's day where it's just flat out delicious! you get tired of always having the same option, but don't worry they occasionally change it up. however, the options located around throughout campus are some of the bests, and there are many options!
Dorm Life living in the dorms your first year, is highly recommended! it's a fun experience where you get to be away from home and meet many people. you are closer to campus as well, so in between classes you have your room to go back to sleep or relax instead of sitting in the lobbies of buildings where it's a bit tedious.
Academic Rigor going to college is hard in itself. the classes are a bit difficult, but there is a lot of help for you as well. it's really up to you to succeed in your classes, you have to take the extra time to study, finish homework on time, and to relax!
Tips for prospective students it can be expensive for out-of-state students, but it's definitely a school i would recommend to anyone. just make sure you save money and apply for scholarships it'll be a huge help! it's not your typical college either, it's an urban-feel campus.
In three sentences i love this school, especially because it's located in the heart of portland. it's a university filled with so much diversity. it's also a beautiful campus that makes you feel safe almost 100% of the time.

Categories Comments Campus Safety good security.
Greek Life Didn't see any.
Great for these types of students All types
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Anything goes as far as dress and appearance, anything...
What to do for fun Downtown has a lot to offer, from eating good food and drinking good beer and wine, to shopping and exploring.
Food and Dining Dinning Hall is OK. However, there are a lot of food carts nearby.
Academic Rigor Challenging, however, most instructors understand that students have lives outside of school, such a family and/or work obligations.
Tips for prospective students A lot of students drop courses during the first or second week, so if a class is full, show up anyways with the correct form. Try not to get discouraged with the university requirements such as senior capstones. The courses can be rewarding.
In three sentences Adequate resources, such as computer labs, with some very dedicated and knowledgeable professors. Strives to promote community involvement, often related to one's major. Does not have the best administrative staff and lacks in funding for various Art's programs.

Categories Comments Campus Safety They seem to always be on top of things and is really attendant to making sure all students and staff are aware of the current dilemma. E-mail alerts, phone calls and text messages to keep students up to date and aware. They have an office on campus and is relatively busy keeping things safe and smooth around PSU.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs that I can't even list them all- however I think it is possible to check them out at PSU website. Every fall there is a party in the park blocks where all the clubs have booths to advertise and recruit new students. It is very entertaining and interesting to see what may interest you. When there, you can play games to win prizes to kick off your experience at PSU with a POW . I remember a few that stood out to me right away when I went to the Party in the Park Blocks are the Student Associations, Dental Club, Rugby, Kick boxing and Environmental Club.
Great for these types of students Business Majors, Pre-med such as nursing, optometry, dentistry, pharmacy, etc. (Portland State has connections with OHSU( Oregon Health and Science Uni.) therefore, having ties and networks are great for getting in there), there is a strong student body in environmental health, architecture, art and public health as well. As far as I know, there is almost a major for any person's interest at the regular college level. International students are always welcomed and encouraged- there are many Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, and English international students. I think PSU is great for the dedicated student that is aware that you can get the same education almost anywhere as long as you do well and put in great effort in succeeding. Therefore, a student who is studious, is working, strong ties to the environment, and wants to save money.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Smith building is very helpful and when you find the right adviser- your academic career might just get brighter :) There are stories of a few haunted places but what college doesn't have them . PSU is fairly new so there is not much to worry there. Unless you only take night classes, you should be surrounded by plenty of other people and feel safe. Hmm...not quite sure of any unusual traditions or locations but there are rooftop gardens where you can chill and study.
Bang for the buck The tuition rate at PSU is affordable and If one wants to stay close to home or the city life then this could be the right place for you. PSU offers students an option to do co-enrollment where they can take a few classes at a community college while taking at least 6-8 at PSU and have shared financial aid so its cheaper that way. Also, if you play your cards right- the campus offers a lot more jobs than meets the eye to help support students. All in all, you are getting the bang for the buck if you add it all up.
What to do for fun When the weather is nice, there are students all over the park blocks and just enjoying the day outside. The campus offers a rec center that one can take classes for fun or join clubs that vary from dragon boating to student associations. There is also a game room with pool tables and a bowling alley at the basement of one of the buildings. A perk about being downtown is that there is many things to do. Portland State is close to the town center which holds a variety of events, concerts, and festivals all year; it is close to very large shopping center ( Pioneer Square) and many of the top restaurants in the area; being downtown means being near the waterfront where you can jog, bike, or walk the dog in a stretch of trees and grassy areas yet still getting the breeze of the Willamette river; From spring time through Summer- one of Portland's most favored thing to do is visit the Saturday market; also don't forget a local tradition of First Tuesday and Last Thursday; last but not least they have the night life near by as well for those of age.
Food and Dining The food in the dorms are fairly good, however the cafeteria is mediocre. I would say try new things because they can surprise you for example the food carts around campus or one of the dining centers.
Dorm Life I like that the dorms are located so close to campus and that they are renovating and building newer and nicer buildings. Being in a dorm really allows you to meet new people and explore different cultures as well as gives off a sense of independence and responsibility.
Academic Rigor The courses here have a variety of range when it comes to academic rigor however the classes here are hard enough to challenge you yet allows you to immerse in the subject and absorb what you need to know. Overall, classes are pretty fun and engaging.
Tips for prospective students Check out the area and definitely take a campus tour as well as conduct one yourself to get the feel of the university. With PSU's location, look into your means of transportation because you may have to commute everyday.
In three sentences Portland State University has a great campus that allows for a lot of diversity and growth. The overall experience that I've had at PSU is great because I have made a lot of new friends, gained knowledge, and pursue my future with a bright outlook. The students and faculty here are always willing to help and welcome any ideas.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are regular PSU patrol cars that survey the campus throughout the day. I formerly owned a cafe in the area and can say that while Portland is an overall safe city, there are many homeless people and disorderlies; especially in the late evening. I never see any of these issues on or near campus since security does such a great job.
Bang for the buck Each class that I have taken at Portland State University has been challenging and rewarding. I have had many study partners within the school and with other local schools and I feel that the PSU curriculum is well rounded and intuitively organized. Again, for lower level courses it may help stretch student dollars to consider concurrent enrollment with Portland Community College as their courses and curriculum is compatible with PSU in many ways as the two schools work together.
What to do for fun Washington State Park is very near to the PSU campus and is an amazing and expansive park. There are always different hiking groups that set times to go through the park; including a PSU-affiliated outdoor club. If you are new to town, this is a great way to meet new, fun people. We are also near many rivers that provide great opportunities for kayaking, inner-tubing, swimming, and the like. Portland is home to many die-hard bicycle enthusiasts; which could certainly provide some local fun. Mt. Hood is only a short drive and offers terrain for mountain biking in the summer and great snowboarding and/or skiing in the winter. Further, the city hosts a ton of different bands and music venues as artists seem to love the artistic attitude of this city. Here, you are never left sitting at home on a Friday night unless you want to be.
Food and Dining Portland State University has a great food court that provides a variety of different menu options and convenience items at a fair price. Additionally, the city of Portland has terrific food and drinks for nearly any palate or food sensitivity. I prefer to eat organic and gluten-free foods and am never at a loss when finding something healthy and delicious to eat!
Dorm Life I do not live in PSU dorms. They seem nice and are right on campus. The city of Portland offers a range of different housing to meet nearly any need. The PSU campus is downtown and conveniently located to parks and recreation, banking, groceries, some of the countries best restaurant and cafes, along with a treasure trove of other shops and galleries.
Academic Rigor All upper level courses at Portland State University are fairly challenging and require a serious commitment to be successful. Teachers provide extensive practice and resources for all materials covered. While this sets a student up to be successful, it is ultimately up to the student to strive for high marks.
Tips for prospective students While this school provides a terrific education, central location in Portland, and very flexible scheduling, tuition is a bit pricey for out of state residents. For those with a specific college budget, it may be worthwhile to look into the concurrent enrollment that Portland State University offers with Portland Community College. Students can attend both schools and take lower level courses through the community college at a fraction of the cost; guaranteeing enrollment into higher level courses, once prepared.
In three sentences Portland State University is a high quality education that provides both flexibility to the busy student and abundant resources for success, through their many outstanding teachers, helpful graduate students, and various other bodies. The student body is very large and always eager to help and interact through study groups and social gatherings. Last and certainly not least, PSU has a terrific administration as I feel that my financial aid and registration continually runs smoothly and questions are answered both promptly and accurately.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is compacted into an area of downtown Portland so to get from one area to another does not require straying far from campus. The area is well lit as well. The only concern is that there are a lot of homeless folks near and occasionally on-campus that can make a person uncomfortable, however there are rarely, if any, dangerous or concerning incidents involving students.
Greek Life A few fraternities and sororities, this is however not a major part of campus life.
Clubs and Activities Plenty of clubs and events on campus, especially during the spring and early fall. A farmers market is held on the weekends in the middle of campus starting in March until mid-November.
Bang for the buck Living in Portland is most of the bang for the buck. The school itself could have a bit more bang.
What to do for fun Downtown Portland offers something for everyone. There is shopping, a museum of science, clubs and bars (for those students of age), plenty of parks, a zoo, and several professional sports teams. Outside of the city abounds plenty of outdoor opportunities, with Mt. Hood an hour or so to the east and the Oregon cost several hours west. The walk-ability and great transportation of the Portland Metropolitan area makes many areas very accessible to students without vehicles.
Food and Dining There is only one major dining hall on campus which is operated by the company Armark. The food is not great and the meal plans are not very flexible. However unlike other universities, the meal plans provide meal on a weekly basis instead of quarterly, so students will be well fed. The location of campus downtown does provide students many more meal options at a cheaper price and better quality.
Dorm Life The dorms are very nice and cater not just to first and second year students but families and non-traditional students as well. The Resident Advisors are great people who make an effort to welcome all new residents and make each floor active and cohesive by planning various events and keeping all residents up to date on campus happenings and policies. The dorms themselves are very nice with several newer facilities. Rooms often have private bathrooms and kitchens/kitchenettes. The only downside for first-year students is that it is required that if you live on campus you do so for the whole year and you get a meal plan, which is not the cheapest option and is not very flexible for students.
Academic Rigor Due to the number of students class size is large unless you are in upper-division courses. Because of this many classes are based on only tests and possibly a paper, that are not very rigorous. Though there is a four-year University Studies requirement, these classes at times are reminiscent of high school classes with professors and mentors aiding you along the way, and doing course work that is many times not very challenging. Upper-division courses however, are better in their expectations and requirements, but it depends on a professor by professor basis.
Tips for prospective students Located in the heart of downtown Portland, if you do not like cities or being in densely populated areas, this campus is probably not for you. If you are looking to quickly, and cost effectively, get through your courses do not expect to going here. There is a rigorous four-year university requirement program that asks you to take course after course from their University Studies department, many of which are not absolutely necessary. Open up your mind and heart here. This university caters to many foreign students, who make up a large portion of the student population. Furthermore, professors, courses, student groups, and students across campus promote and encourage thinking outside of the box, being active in creating change in our communities, and going against the status quo.
In three sentences A large and diverse school in the heart of a great city in the Pacific Northwest. Offers a broad range of classes, opportunities to get involved on campus and in the community, and is committed to creating students who are active and aware in their communities. Some of the academic programs are not the greatest and need revision, but Portland State University is a world-class university.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Overall, really safe.
Greek Life Basically no Greek life. Go to a typical college town for this.
Clubs and Activities Quite a few surprisingly, even women's rugby.
Great for these types of students Portland and PSU are great for, well, hipsters. Anything sort of unique and different you will find in this city.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus ...In all honesty Portland in gerneral is unusual, so it is difficult to pinpoint one specific thing.
Bang for the buck So many places near campus offer student discounts, but one of my favorites is the happy hour at Pizzacato. From 2-8pm everyday you can get any slice of pizza and any pint of beer. Perfect way to end the day.
What to do for fun If you're of age, there are some great bars and happy hours nearby, as well as general restaurants. I'm also a fan of walking around Powell's Bookstore, spending time at the waterfront and the many events held there, and shopping at all the unique shops.
Food and Dining AMAZING. The BEST aspect of living in this city.
Dorm Life Good dorms overall, but why pay to live in a dorm when there are so many apartments in downtown Portland and surrounding areas?
Academic Rigor For me personally PSU is average when it comes to academic rigor due to the fact that PSU prides itself more on the growth of the student versus a perfect GPA and transcript.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you are not looking for the typical college feel. Also, I would advise that you really set yourself up as far as your major and degree go, i.e. make sure you're not taking classes that are not needed as many people tend to forget this.
In three sentences PSU has a great staff lined up, and overall it is a good learning environment. However, PSU is very much a commuter school and this is not the best option for many students looking for the typical college life. That being said, PSU offers some of the most diverse fields of study.

Dorm Life I don't live at a dorm, for I live at home. But with understanding from my friends living at the dorms in PSU is really cool!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is perfect for Portland-lovers. Great for those who like big schools in a big city. PSU is great for anyone interested in one of their graduate programs--no matter if you plan to pursue a Bachelor's at PSU or not.
Tips for prospective students PSU has so many different majors (and minors). Read through all the options before you decide because you may find a major/minor that is perfect for you that you didn't know was available.
Bang for the buck As far as general ed requirements go, a community college would be cheaper, but PSU is a great school for graduate studies.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Portland State is great for all different types of students. We have a strong, diverse, and driven student body here at PSU. If you are the type of person who likes to have options, who likes to get involved, or who wants a good education, then PSU is the place for you!
Tips for prospective students If you are a future student here, don't be scared. You should be excited because you're about to be apart of one of the most urban and outreaching colleges there is. Don't wait until the day of classes to try and find them...I advise you to take a map and walk the route of your classes a couple times before school starts. The university is built within the city as opposed to separate from it, so you can get lost easily. One last tip I have is to take this chance at PSU to broaden your horizons. PSU is a diverse campus with loads of people interested in similar and different things. There are many people of all ages who offer different wisdom. You can learn a lot here just from the people you meet and the activities you're apart of; so get involved because it will only benefit you.
Bang for the buck No matter what college a student attends, money will always be a concern. While being here at Portland State, I have never felt as though I wasn't going to be able to find a way to pay for my tuition. With financial aid and the massive amounts of scholarships that are offered, not attending because of money issues isn't a problem. Each and every class is full of information, and the professors are more than willing to give you the assistance you need. I would say that I'm paying a little amount compared to the amount of schooling and attention I am receiving.
Am enjoying being here I love the environment that PSU provides. Not only is this a successful college, but it's a major part of the Portland community. I love knowing that I can be apart of the city while working towards my degree.
Academic Rigor Being here at Portland State isn't just about learning academics, it's about learning how to cope in different environments. I feel like while attending PSU I can learn more about myself and how I can improve on my skills when it comes to being out on my own. Along with the personal learning, I can say that the professors here are very good at what they do. I haven't had one class where I felt like I wasn't learning anything.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students PSU is very urban. Be prepared to walk everywhere you go. The streetcar is great, and free for most of the area it runs through.
Tips for prospective students Do not forget to take into account fees like transportation fees, textbook fees, backpack, calculator or scantron fees. Apply for as many scholarships as you can. Scholarships are how I could afford to attend a class at PSU!
Bang for the buck Portland State is a great university from what I can tell, but if you live on the dorm, you are paying double than if you live at home with your parents, and the classes are about $20 per credit than a community college.
Did enjoy being here The class I took was a night class and was four hours long. Make sure it is worth it to you to stay until the class is over. I did, but students that did not had a harder time with the quizzes.
Did learn a lot I have only taken one class at this university, but I learned a lot in that class. It was BA 101 with Hirons.

Clubs and Activities there are so many clubs and activities at psu. to name just one, there is a club for latin speakers, since there is a latin class at psu. if there aren't clubs on campus that suit your personal interests you can always create your own. i know somebody who is in the process of creating a photography club.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there are practice rooms on the third floor of cramer hall. that's unusual because cramer hall is a building known for music. there is also a harpsichord in the practice rooms.
Bang for the buck to get the most out of your money, i personally recommend doing things on campus. chances are, campus activities are free. my roommate and i went rock-climbing for the first time at the recreational center for free. it was one of the best things i've done on campus, and the folks at the rec center are really helpful, especially for the first time rock climber.
What to do for fun there is so much to do in portland, and at portland state university. there are a lot of clubs and activities on campus that one can take a part in. there are also a lot of things to do in portland. i recommend powell's for a low key weekend.
Food and Dining to be honest, the food here is terrible. i would personally have a small dining plan and have my own food in my dorm.
Dorm Life dorm life is different for everyone. i love it because i have a great roommate and people on my floor are friendly. don't be afraid to be social.
Academic Rigor school isn't to difficult. there are times when it's overwhelming, but as long as you time manage, and get your work done on time, it won't be difficult.
Tips for prospective students get involved in school. join a sport, club, and do volunteer work. it also helps you to get work done before the weekend. constantly look for scholarships, and save your money! if you need help, don't be afraid to ask, because it's better to get a problem fixed before it gets worse.
In three sentences portland state university is a great school. if you need help with anything, there are great resources available on campus. plus, there are a lot of clubs and activities on campus that you can check out.

Dorm Life i have not stayed in any of the dorms but the unique buildings make the campus beautiful.

Categories Comments Campus Safety reports of any 'incidents' are required by law to be sent to students. these have been few and far between and the campus is a tight area with few dark areas even at night. they make and effort to put safety alarms in the most questionable areas.
Food and Dining portland is known for the best food. period. located downtown of this beautiful city, portland state university is not far from fantastic food cart fare, cheap eats and restaurants that keep your mouth a-watering. on-campus food lacks slightly in this area, as in it's a better bet to explore outside the cafeteria. a notable mention is the economic food-for-thought café.
Dorm Life having not lived in the dorms on campus, i cannot say how the living arrangements are, but i will give them an average rating for the location directly on campus in downtown portland and apparent cleanliness inside and out.
Academic Rigor all dependent on class load and degree objective, the classes maintain a high sense of standard and a good work load as class level increases. it should be notes, students get what they put into the class; if you do the minimum reading and work, minimum knowledge will be gained. a class may not seem 'challenging' so make it worth your while with a little extra work.
Tips for prospective students utilizing the cities excellent public transit is a must, especially for commuting students. this knowledge makes is easier and more pleasurable going to and fro campus. once on campus, there are many utilities to maximize academic success; private study rooms, study groups per class, tutors and single-credit help classes specific for each class may be available. do not hesitate to search and ask for help.

Categories Comments What to do for fun If the weather is nice, the Park Blocks are a great place to take a walk, eat lunch, or chat with your friends. The Portland Art Museum is also nearby, and PSU's campus is on the MAX line if you feel like going further and exploring Pioneer Square, which has many great restaurants nearby and usually has some sort of event going on. The rec centre facilities are great and I'd definitely recommend signing up for a few PE classes, which range from swimming, soccer, and weight lifting to tango, hip hop, and swing classes.
Food and Dining I've only eaten in the dining hall a few times, and that food is alright, but there are many places around campus to eat besides the dining hall. If you live in dorms as a Freshman, you are required to purchase a meal plan, so keep that in mind. For those who don't want to eat there, many restaurants and food carts are nearby or within campus buildings. You get not only chain places like Subway, Chipotle, McDonalds, and Starbucks, but authentic Thai food, cafés, and a lot more if you just take a moment to look around.
Dorm Life I don't live in the dorms myself because I can't afford the expense, but from what I've of other's dorms they are in okay condition. Some are right on campus, others are further away.
Academic Rigor I'd say this is right in the middle-- some classes required a lot of effort, others not so much. There's still a lot of the busy work present in university that one might expect more in K-12 education, though this depends on the course/professor and other classes definitely have a lot of thought provoking, educational work that is worthwhile.
Tips for prospective students Always ask around or look at reviews online before choosing a certain class or professor-- some professors are wonderful and go great with everyone, others repeatedly get bad reviews, so you'll want to shop around in order to get the best experience. If you schedule classes close together, be sure you have time to get from building to building or risk being late. When it comes to class descriptions, you don't always get exactly what you're expecting, so that is another thing to research, as different professors focus on different things within the same course.
In three sentences A varied university experience with small to medium class sizes, but a larger overall population. Great location for those who love larger cities, though getting from building to building can be a pain if your classes are on opposite ends of campus. Some facilities have been updated or renovated, but others could use some work.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Head to the student recreation center to join an exercise class that interests you. There are clubs on campus that have daily activities, like the running club. Portland also has a great music culture; head north to Couch street and check out the bars and music talent.
Food and Dining If you walk a couple of blocks north to fourth avenue, you will see a myriad of food cards that serve delicious foods from around the world. Also, there are more than enough eateries around campus to satisfy ones hunger on a student's budget.
Dorm Life I lived outside of campus, but I had a friend who lived in a dorm. There were plenty of student activities to keep her out of her dorm from music concerts in the park blocks, free lectures, and career days.
Academic Rigor I have chosen by degree in speech and hearing sciences. Classes were challenging, but with hard work, I was able to succeed with flying colors.
Tips for prospective students Bring a little cash just in case you get hungry; there are wonderful food carts on the park block that runs in the middle of campus. Don't be afraid if you are a returning student. Many students here are returning students and the atmosphere is welcoming.
In three sentences Portland State University is an awesome school! You can have all of your administrative needs met on the first floor of Neuberger Hall. Classes are challenging, and the professors genuinely care about your success.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The school has the security system, but it is not enough because the school is in the downtown. Many homeless people walk around the school.
Greek Life I do not know about Greek life.
Clubs and Activities I do not join any clubs because I do not have enough time to have it. Many students announce in my classes and perform. They do great their clubs activities and help others a lot.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The school is in the downtown. Sometimes, I hear a lot of noise because people campaign when they have an issue such as Occupy the Portland. Sometimes, I hear an ambulance's, a police car's, or a fire truck's siren.
What to do for fun The Portland State University music department offers many free concerts or discount for students. If I have a time, I go to the concerto. Also, I enjoy swimming or exercising at the school gym because it is free for the students.
Food and Dining I usually pack my lunch because I do not want to buy fast food or non-organic food. I watch many documents for food that is why I choose the organic or health food. I sometimes buy food at the school cafe, but the choice is not a lot.
Dorm Life I do not have dorm life experience because I live in off-campus.
Academic Rigor I enjoy studying because I learn a lot. Also, I can do double major and one minor. If I have more time and money, I want to study as many as I can.
Tips for prospective students The Portland State University is in the Portland downtown. The tranportation system is great to commute to the school from my home.

Food and Dining Lots of great eating options on campus. I believe my tour guide said there were something like eight Starbucks on campus.
Dorm Life The dorm I visited was amazing. Very comfortable - definitely not like your traditional college dorm. It also places you within minutes of the city and everything on campus.
Academic Rigor Not so sure about this area, but they do have a very unique freshman academic program, as well as a very good honors program.
Tips for prospective students Definitely visit the campus before making a decision.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I was being stocked one term and they took it very seriously. It's a very safe/secure campus. There are phones you can pick up throughout the campus and it is very regularly patrolled by campus security and police. PSU takes all physical and sexual threats seriously.
Great for these types of students Self-directed, commuters, hippies, semi-intelligent, liberal, okay with online learning
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Mezanine is pretty neat when you see it for the first time.
Bang for the buck Tuition has raised amazingly high since I started going to PSU in 2003 and managed to get two bachelors degrees. Students are nickeled and dimed for miscellaneous fees, student rec fees, and stuff that has to do with PSU's constant expansion. We don't see what the fees actually go to. If I could get some of the fee money back, I would be happy.
What to do for fun You can listen to a loud ranting in the park blocks of the political or religious persuasion. Then there is the party in the blocks with all kinds of musicians. Saturday/Sunday Farmers Market sets up with fruits, veggies, and homemade goods. Student groups/fraternities/sororities have mixers and recruitment. There is always a pajama breakfast some time in the year. Not to mention vendors selling stuff. I belong to Philosophy Club and I also like to go to the Mittlemen Gallery when there is a showing.
Food and Dining Food is good quality since PSU is right there in the park blocks, you aren't confined to eating food in the student union. Otherwise, the student union is always going through dining changes with vegan/vegetarian food being offered in the Food for Thought Cafe. In the student dining, there is Sbarro, New York Bagels, a Wok, Burger grill, and food to grab and go. Occasionally, the pastries and danishes that are sold with the Starbucks Espresso coffee are stale, but for the most part the food quality and choices appeal to breakfast, lunch, and dinner needs of the students. If you get sick of these there are a bunch of food carts on SW 4th avenue and a few right there in the park blocks.
Dorm Life I never stayed in the dorms, but I had many friends who did and they rated their overall quality as average with some housing problems. They mostly were talking about fixing stuff and quality.
Academic Rigor More or less this depends on what you make of it, what kinds of classes you choose, what academic subjects your take, etc. Psychology classes taught at the 200-300 level are more challenging than Psychology 400-500 classes, so that you are more than amply prepared for the advanced/intermediate level.
Tips for prospective students Find out what the expected workload and format is upfront based on what the professor says in the syllabus and how consistent he/she follows the syllabus the first week of class. Also, go to the department the class is being taught in and ask random students if they have had your professor and/or if they know about the professor's reputation.
In three sentences Frustratingly, yet satisfyingly consistent. Many of the professors are incredibly devoted to helping students succeed. Yet, as much as this is true about half want to cause conformity and droneness in their students. Progressively liberal & naiively passive.

Food and Dining Very affordable dining options on campus as well as off campus. Portland is known for the diversity and popularity of the restaurants so there is definitely something to fit everyones tastes.
Dorm Life Living on campus is a great opportunity to be involved in the school even more. It is a great experience for anyone who would like to get the most of of their educational experience. There are many different room options available including family housing.
Academic Rigor It is challenging since it is a university however there are many resources available for anyone at any given time to help them with either tutoring, computer lab or essay writing.
Tips for prospective students Get involved in clubs, groups, or events in order to enrich your educational experience and network since PSU is in the heart of Portland.

Categories Comments What to do for fun PSU is just a short jaunt away from all sorts of entertainment. Close by is Pioneer Square Mall and the downtown Portland shopping area. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is just across the river, and a handful of hiking areas and parks are within a mile or two of the university, including Marquam Nature Area and the Portland Japanese Gardens.
Food and Dining There are numerous options on campus to catch a meal or snack. From on-campus convenience stores to a plethora of diverse food carts, along with a couple of cafeterias and plenty of nearby restaurants, you'll always have an nearby.
Dorm Life Dorm life is ok here. Compared to living off-campus, it is a little pricey, but you get the dorm experience. There are numerous dorms to suit your preference, including family housing for non-traditional students and First Year Experience for new freshmen.
Academic Rigor Most of the classes past the 100 level are adequately challenging. This is an area where the adage, You get what you give is certainly true. Put your all into your schoolwork, and you'll be rewarded by a great academic experience.
Tips for prospective students My biggest tip to prospective students is to come check the campus out before you start here. Not only will you get to see the campus, but you will get an idea of if you want to live on-campus or off.
In three sentences Portland State University is a great mix of traditional and nontraditional students. Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for vegans and alternative health plans, LGBTQ youth, Applied Linguistics students.
What to do for fun Since Portland State is right in the middle of downtown Portland, there are many places nearby for fun. For example, in the afternoon one can walk just a few blocks from Neuberger to find the Chit Chat Cafe, which features sandwiches, teas, bentos, and all sorts of other things. It has a nice, open atmosphere with games and books for people to read. The music scene is also pretty big in Portland as well, and if one were to check out the Portland Mercury, there are bound to be a ton of lists of different bands in town. Portland State also has a library nearby for any bookworms, and for all of ones purchasing needs, Powells, the largest bookstore in the world, is just a streetcar ride away.
Food and Dining This is where things get interesting - PSU's food and dining is really incredible if you know where to look! There's the main cafeteria in Smith, which offers a lot of different food types - from Italian to Chinese to regular old bagels. However, it is not going to be the cup of tea for a student that may have alternative diets. That's why there is another cafe in the basement of Smith called the 'Food for Thought' cafe that is almost entirely student run and is chock full of vegan and gluten-free options. The menu is always changing, so be sure to check it out daily!
Dorm Life Portland State is right in the middle of downtown Portland, which means there's all kinds of amazing things to check out around the area! The park blocks are nearby which are simply beautiful during any season. The dorms are cozy and warm.
Academic Rigor Portland State offers a rigorous course load, but not so much as to overwhelm anyone. It may seem like a lot at first, but the more one works at it, the easier it will get.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to talk to your professors! As stated above, the professors are very understanding, and the only way for them to know what you're struggling with is to talk to them! It may be tough to break out of your shell, but it's certainly worth it in the end.
In three sentences Portland State University is a well-rounded college with many exciting opportunities for 2-year and 4-year students alike. Its linguistics programs are top notch, and so are its staff! The staff at Portland State University is one of the most friendly and understanding groups of professors around, which makes their classes just that much more meaningful to a student in the long run.

Bang for the buck Out of state tuition is very high but I think it's a good school.
Food and Dining The cafeteria food on campus is subpar but plentiful and good for breakfast.
Dorm Life The dorms are varied in what they offer and their quality. Do your research when choosing a dorm, otherwise you may not choose the best location.
Academic Rigor It all depends on the classes you take and your interests. Just carefully measure your study time.
Tips for prospective students Plan your time carefully. Make good use of the library. Always take at least one interesting course each term. Talk to your adviser regularly!
In three sentences Centrally located near public transportation, buildings are a bit scattered but all within walking distance of each other, and the courses are interesting. Categories Comments Campus Safety There have been a few disturbances, but overall despite the fact that Portland State is located downtown I feel very safe.
Great for these types of students Alternative- older, returning students, commuters.
Bang for the buck Public education is going up, but it is still a lot cheaper than a private school, and I feel as if I am receiving just as good of an education.
What to do for fun The campus is right in the heart of Portland, and almost everything is accessible via public transit. In the city you can go out dancing, eat at a variety of restaurants, find a great concert, or enjoy the beautiful water front. Portland is also close to the Columbia Gorge and Mt. Hood for those who love the great outdoors and all it has to offer.
Food and Dining There is only one real dining hall, Victors. The food starts out okay but by the end of your freshman year you will never want to step foot in there again. The only other place to grab food through the school is Smith Memorial Student Union. Here the dining choices are set up like a food court where a variety of food is offered. The food in Smith is certainly preferable to Victor's, but it can get expensive.
Dorm Life I highly recommend staying in the dorms for one or two years during your studies at Portland State. It makes the very large campus feel a lot smaller and creates community between residents. However, campus housing can be pretty expensive, so if you're on a budget this probably isn't your best option.
Academic Rigor I constantly feel challenged academically at Portland State. For those wishing to make the most out of their academic pursuits I highly recommend the University Honors Program. The program focuses on preparing students for graduate school and the end-product of this program is a thesis written by the student in their senior year.
Tips for prospective students Take classes that sound interesting to you; don't settle on just one. There are very few programs that can be completed in Junior and Senior years so take the time to explore and decide around sophomore year what you want to major in.
In three sentences Portland State is a wonderful school if you are unsure about what you want to study because there are so many options. The professors are generally very helpful and are well invested in helping their students succeed. Portland State also has a prime location because it is right in the heart of downtown.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Heard of keep Portland Weird? PSU seems to be a great place for spontaneous tweet-ups. I've seen singing, pillow fights, water-balloon fights, and the spontaneous gymnastics/acrobatics flash mob in the square. Keeps you on your toes, and always a welcome study break.
Bang for the buck I am quite impressed. For a state school, this is a fantastic campus, with great people. Once you've been a resident, the tuition is super stellar. Worth waiting a year or two working in Portland for residency.
What to do for fun Hit the ASRC to learn how to rock climb. Oh, and then apply those skills on an outdoor organized bouldering excursion in the gorge!
Food and Dining The food court is fantastic. Some normal college student foods, and then there's all the delicious healthy food!
Dorm Life Couldn't say, I'm a non-traditional student. Have heard good things from classmates.
Tips for prospective students Volunteer. There are so many people from so many countries to meet!
In three sentences PSU has very green spaces and a very green campus. Somehow it seems fun that it rains 2/3s of the year! There's always a lot going on, yet plenty of quiet spots to study when its time to hit the books.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Anything and everything! Portland's a great city!
Food and Dining There are usually a good amount of options, but the most impressive feature of the dining hall is their dedication to having vegan and vegetarian options at all meals.
Dorm Life Great sense of community on your floor. Games, study groups, parties and everything else you would expect from a college dorm experience are ample.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor varies greatly depending on which major you are pursuing and how many credits you choose to take, but overall I feel that everyone who comes here will get both a unique and incredibly useful education.
Tips for prospective students Bring with you as many good studying habits as you can learn, but if you feel that you are lacking in any way, you can visit any number of the studying and tutoring resources that are provided at the university.
In three sentences Portland State University has exposed me to a variety of different cultures and backgrounds that I can honestly say I would not have had the pleasure to encounter in many other institutions. Situated in central Portland, the university is surrounded by ample resources, restaurants, food carts, and opportunities for activities. The teachers and staff at PSU are great, all of them wanting for every student to succeed.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Including location and compared to other universities, PSU is a very safe campus in oregon.
What to do for fun Enjoy campus! There is so much to do, even without spending money, or partying and such. There is clubs, athletics, etc.
Food and Dining Food is delicious and quite healthy for you. it doesn't taste like typical cafeteria food.
Dorm Life Dorms are very nice, however, make sure you get on a floor that you'll for sure enjoy.
Academic Rigor This school's academic rigor very much follows this statement: what you get out of your classes is what you put into it. If you want to enjoy your classes, you will.
Tips for prospective students Talk to people! Get involved in campus!
In three sentences It has a wonderful campus and everyone is very accepting and nice. The professors are interesting and interactive during lecture classes rather then just standing and writing on a whiteboard or using a powerpoint and talking. The students are very diverse, and its difficult to feel out of place because there is always someone who shares interests as you.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Its really safe here. The Broadway dorm has a card key door that is locked almost all the time, a card key activated elevator, and the doors cannot be unlocked other than with the specific room keys and they do not remain unlocked. At night if a student feels not safe getting back to their dorm as long as they're within a mile of campus the campus safety people will come escort them back to their dorms.
Bang for the buck Its really really expensive...And its cheaper to take pretty much the same classes at PCC. A lot of PSU freshmen i know are switching to PCC and staying in the dorms next term.
What to do for fun During Viking week there are a lot of activities to do that are a lot of fun, and students can go ride the Max trains to a mall and hang out. The RA's in the dorms has activities they're required to do weekly that can be a lot of fun.
Food and Dining The meal plan students are forced to get if they live in the dorm is kinda nice in the long run, The cafeteria, Victor's, is actually has really good food. Being in downtown Portland there are places to eat everywhere are they're all really really good.
Dorm Life The dorms are beautiful and being a freshman I've only ever seen Broadway and Ondine but I'd much rather live in Ondine than Broadway. The Ondine building is much friendlier, however Broadway has a wonderful kitchenette.
Academic Rigor It really depends on the classes you take but it really depends on your desire to do the homework.
Tips for prospective students Its very very expensive and the financial aid department is lacking intelligence sometimes. It is also significantly cheaper going to PCC, and PCC students can live in PSU dorms.
In three sentences The campus is beautiful and the people are for the most part really friendly. The location of the college is convenient and downtown Portland is beautiful. The teachers are really helpful and nice.

Categories Comments What to do for fun EVERYTHING! Just hoop on the streetcar, buy a max ticket or anything and go somewhere. There is shopping, walking, movie theaters, bowling, arcades, powell's, hiking trails, the rec center. There are loads of thins to do here even without spending money.
Food and Dining The main cafeteria, Victors, has its good days, but a lot of bad. The taco salad days are really good and when they have curly fries it's as if the food heavens have opened and blessed Victors with its good food blessing. Also Victors is all you can eat, so you can have lots of seconds. There is always the grill, salad bar, waffle and sandwich station (besides breakfast) open too so hamburgers are always an option if you don't like some of the strange dishes Victors has concocted. There are also tons of restaurants located around campus as well as other Portland State dining that you can spend dining dollars on.
Dorm Life Dorm life is so expensive, but I've heard that the first year is always the most expensive. I really enjoy living in the dorms, it's how I've made friends. Also living in the dorms connects you to campus more than commuting does.
Academic Rigor The classes are awesome and I've already learned so much and it's just the end of the 6th week. The workload isn't as bad as movies ad TV shows make it out to be. As long as you keep up on your work than you should be fine.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of the gym, streetcar, and other student resources, also if you have any struggles with anything don't be afraid to email your student mentor or talk to your teacher during office hours. Living on campus would also be something I recommend for the first year at least, that first term is when you are going to make your core group of friends and chances are they will live on the same floor as you, it's hard to make friends with people in your classes because a lot of people do commute from the surrounding areas and most people don't hang out after class to make friends.
In three sentences Portland State is an urban campus located in the middle of downtown Portland; it's mixed in with the city so you really feel like you are a part of it. The professors I've had so far have been really mellow, but have still taught me so much. It's not your typical college experience of frat houses and such, but if you don't know that going in that's kind of your own fault.

Greek Life None really.
Great for these types of students EVERYONE! PSU caters to almost any kind of undergraduate student!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The park blocks are a favorite. They're really a great place to meet people and to get a quick bite to eat, conveniently right next to most classes.
Bang for the buck If you like living in a city and going to school in a very metropolitan area, you'll love PSU. The school is filled with invested professors and extremely diverse students that come from all different backgrounds.
What to do for fun Ton's of events are held weekly by PSU, and student run events are constantly taking place as well. On top of that, being nestled in downtown Portland, PSU provides a wide array of nightlight activities as well as an awesome national park within city limits.
Food and Dining THE FOOD HERE IS AMAZING! So many food carts that are easily walked to, here in Portland the food couldn't be better.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty cool, definitely a great experience and a chance to branch out and meet people in your age group.
Academic Rigor Depending on how you choose to challenge yourself, PSU can really test your ability to perform academically. I thoroughly enjoy the curriculum framework and was thrilled with how engaging the courses are.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you waive out of the health insurance before the deadline if you already have a plan, they do allow appeals but it isn't likely to go through. Also, don't be shy; the students here are more than friendly and willing to help you in any way possible, as are the staff.
In three sentences Portland State University provides an excellent academic atmosphere, nestled snuggly in the heart of downtown Portland, OR. Their professors are dedicated to helping students learn, and the resources available to students are second-to-none at making things easier for both and old students. As a student, I feel completely satisfied with the my college experience so far here at Portland State University thanks to the excellent staff, and especially to the ease of registration and wide variety of offered courses.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Well priced. I moved from CA and tuition is similar. It takes a year to get residency so you will be paying through the nose if you decide to not wait (3x as much!!).
What to do for fun Free movies, dances and food. Close-in to downtown, too much to list. Check out all of the available clubs to sign up for.
Food and Dining Under the Smith building there is a food court!
Academic Rigor Good stuff.
Tips for prospective students Rain gear to get to and from. Look for the FLEX pass if you ride the bus/max!!! Summit is a library resource where you can check out text books instead of buying them. There is a lot to offer and help you, you just have to look! Also, transfer students, if you take more than 8 units (2 classes), your credit will not count towards your residency (see Bang for Buck).

Great for these types of students Liberal minded students, exchange students, students who enjoy the outdoors and are forward thinking.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Portland State has very liberal attitudes which at times can be very annoying and disrespectful, be cautious.
Bang for the buck Very expensive
What to do for fun Portland, Oregon is surrounded by great things to do. If you can't find one when you get here, you do not belong.
Tips for prospective students Come visit before you just decide to go. The campus is right downtown, which is great, but not for everyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety As a commuter school in an urban area, expect some issues now and then. but the campus safety office is informative and the system is quick to draw attention to conflicts. Pay attention to and register for campus alerts.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of ways to get involved. It's a big campus so there will most likely be a club to meet your interests. It's actually a good idea to get involved so that you don't feel lost in a such a large and diverse system.
Bang for the buck There have been price hikes in tuition for the past years, but still definitely worth it compared to private schools around the area.
What to do for fun Portland is all about entertainment. The Portland Art Museum, Saturday Market and Last Thursday are only some of the things that stand out as being Portland. Plus being in the center of the city makes, clubs, shopping areas (Pioneer Square!), restaurants, etc. so accessible.
Food and Dining Campus food is okay but can get tedious after a while. Design you cuisine once in a while to break the boredom, and explore the restaurants (there are many) around the area. There's also lots to learn in term of culture. We¢re also proud of our food carts. Be sure to visit Voodoo Donuts, St. Cupcake and local coffee shops.
Dorm Life I don't live in the dorms so I can't say for sure what the experience is like. But from what people living the dorms say, there are a lot of activities on campus so you don't have to travel far to be entertained. People are friendly and you'll eventually form close bonds with your roommate and neighbors.
Academic Rigor Most classes are very decent in terms of rigor. It mostly comes down to what classes you choose. Some classes can be easy, and some can be very challenging and force you to step out of your comfort zone. PSU provides a good education at a low cost and you can challenge yourself by taking advanced level classes or apply for the Honors Program. Do some research for classes, instructors and expectations beforehand and adjust your effort level so that you don't get caught by surprise.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to explore your interests & participate in clubs or extracurricular activities so you don't get lost on such a big campus. Get your financial aid issues, deadlines, et cetera in order and on time because the Financial Aid Office is mostly overwhelmed at the beginning and end of an academic term. Students come from all walks of life, in various age ranges and have different reasons for being in school. The experience sometimes can be eye-opening.
In three sentences PSU is the great campus because of its relaxed urban atmosphere. It's vibrant, but not too exhausting; diverse, but unique. It is perfect in that even though it's a big university, it still has a distinctive flavor and you can make this experience your experience.

Food and Dining They have several places that a student can go to eat and study. The food and the prices are not too bad if one spends their money frugally.
Dorm Life At this time, I do not reside there.
Academic Rigor It is very different from going to a junior college. There is more homework, I enjoy the critical thinking challenges, and I receive personal satisfaction for the work I've done. If I feel that I need more work in a certain area, my professors are happy to oblige me by giving me more.

Clubs and Activities It seems there's a club for just about everybody at PSU!
Great for these types of students PSU is best for returning/nontraditional students looking to network and get their career off the ground.
Bang for the buck PSU is a great way to get a good career-focused education at a state school price.
What to do for fun There are lots of activities on campus, plus some great facilities. There is a movie theater on campus that is free to students, and the basement of the student union has a bowling alley and pool tables.
Food and Dining While the food & dining services provided by PSU aren't the best, look for all the great options in and around campus! Being downtown has its advantages, from food carts to fine dining. Whatever strikes your fancy, it'll be within 5 minutes of campus.
Dorm Life It's no secret that dorm life at PSU is next to non-existant. The majority of students live off-campus, and the student housing is spread out all over campus.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor will depend on what program you're in. Many programs have become very competitive as the student body grows, so be prepared to put your best foot forward.
Tips for prospective students Definitely take advantage of all campus tours and orientation sessions. The campus is very large and navigating to your classes, housing, and the surrounding areas can be overwhelming! Make sure to always make appointments with the advising staff specific to your major or college, not the general advising staff.
In three sentences Portland State University is a great college if you want to jumpstart your career. Categories Comments Campus Safety I have a night class that get's out at 9:30. I have never felt threatened however, since the campus is so active at night! There are always people walking around, the library is open and filled with students, the rec center still has classes going, and best of all, campus security and Portland police are constantly patrolling so I see them often. Over all? Extremely safe!
Greek Life PSU has some greek life, but none of the out of control behavior you see so often splattered across TV. They are much more welcoming as well!
Clubs and Activities PSU has a ton of sports clubs, (and I already mentioned the fancy rec center. Take the free Zumba class, it's an hour of some hardcore fun!) an a multitude of activities and deals for students. Most of the majors have club's as well, alongside your normal fun clubs!
Great for these types of students Great for art, science, film, English and Japanese majors!

Bang for the buck PSU has amazing professors, a huge library with lot's of resources, ton's of food and fun options, a huge rec center with free classes and ton's more!
What to do for fun PSU is located downtown. The waterfront is close, and so are a multitude of bars and clubs. Wacky and fun stores like Voodoo Doughnuts and Powell's city of books are within easy distance, and PSU itself offers lot's of on campus activities to keep you busy!

From the cheap and tasty foodcarts, to the multitude of places like Subway and other fast food restaurants, to more sit down bars, pubs, diners and grills, to convenience stores, there are almost to many choices. Deciding what to eat can almost become a problem!
Dorm Life The dorms are spacious and lovely! Odine even has a giant TV on the first floor!
Academic Rigor PSU pushes you hard, and expects you to do a lot. It's a challenge, but you learn more than you'd think possible, and will come out of it ahead of other graduates and students.
Tips for prospective students Always talk with an adviser right out of the gate! Get to know your Professors, and if you have any issues, go to them! Also do wait to cross the road instead of just running through whenever, a lot of cars go whizzing through the campus!

Categories Comments Campus Safety We seldom have any criminal activities aside from the few warnings we receive. But we are prone to crime just like other colleges and universities and the campus police do a good job of regulating and watching out for any suspicious or criminal activities.
Great for these types of students If you liberal or meeting new people, this would be the place for you! Other colleges can't get more diverse than this school and students who embrace diversity and their community will maximize their experience here.
What to do for fun For fun, the whole park block is available to the students. The students can walk, jog, or just simply enjoy and take in the beauty and the grace of the park blocks. There are also pool tables and a bowling alley in the bottom floor of the Smith building which adds a nice touch to rainy days!
Food and Dining The campus is home to an array of cultural foods that range from Mediterranean to Chinese. They are often around six dollars, so the price is decent and the food is absolutely delicious in all aspects.
Dorm Life The dorms are decent with rooms that one could say are humble. They are very close to campus and when its not rainy, display a nice view.
Academic Rigor Portland State is unique in that it requires its students to finish a university pathway or honors in order to graduate. These pathways essentially clusters of classes that help make the student more well rounded. Aside from the requirements, the school also offers many majors with a variety of levels.
Tips for prospective students Come prepared for the rain and don't be afraid to get a little wet. This is a very liberal school in a sense that it's in downtown Portland and its very diverse! Be prepared to embrace diversity.
In three sentences Portland State University is an excellent diverse school that offers a chance for people to freshly think and become for eco-friendly. My rating out of five would be 4.5. Ultimately, I would praise its tranquil community and the peace this school offers along with the regular components of any other colleges or university.

Categories Comments Campus Safety While there have been incidents and there are always risks in the city, campus safety is always quick to respond to dangers and to advise the student population when specific cautions are warranted.
Greek Life Minimal
Clubs and Activities I have only joined one club so far, but there appear to be a lot of choices for a variety of affiliations.
Great for these types of students Serious students only. This is not a party school. I am sure that there are parties to be had, but so many of the students here mean business that they lend a definite sense of intense focus to the population.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Smith Hall has an underground bowling alley and everyone should try hanging out at the Cheerful Tortoise at least once.
Bang for the buck I believe I am getting an excellent education for my money.
What to do for fun Night clubs? Kayaking? Biking? Shopping? Skiing? You name it, you can do it.
Food and Dining There's good and not as good. The brand name kiosks in Smith Hall offer delicious brand name food. The in-house Chinese food vendor offers less flavorful and slightly disappointing fare.
Dorm Life I can't speak for dorm life as I live far off campus
Academic Rigor Entirely dependent upon your field of study. I feel that my teachers are offering me a challenge and holding me responsible for my own success. At the same time, the school offers academic support and all teachers ensure that students know they are available to offer whatever assistance may be needed.
Tips for prospective students You have so many choices for places to live and things to do. It's a wonderful microcosm in the heart of downtown Portland. In turn, the school itself offers all the support you could hope for to stay on track for academic success.
In three sentences Portland State has grown so much in the past 15 years that it is like a whole new school. The academic programs and amenities offered to students are expanded and improved and now allow the school to compete with other major universities. I am happy and proud to be a student here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is always campus safety available, they are quick to issue warnings if needed.
Greek Life There are some fraternities and sororities but only a handful.
Clubs and Activities Many clubs: Sports; Soccer, Tennis, Ping Pong, Basket Ball etc. Cultural: Vietnamese, Korean, Indian etc.
Great for these types of students Outgoing, studious, laid back environmentally cautious, anyone who is trying to get a good education without paying for a private university.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus For the 21+ the Cheerful Tortoise is the popular hang out spot, that or the Rogue. Also the Park Blocks are always lively and some people set up music from time to time.
Bang for the buck The state tuition is rising, but it is everywhere else. The education and experience I am getting compared to some of my friends in various other colleges are just the same or even better in many aspects and I am paying significantly less than them. Being in the School of Business adds to this due to their high reputation.
What to do for fun There are constant events going on. The park blocks have a nice scenery for people to hang out. Anything outdoors, walking around downtown, biking, running; many people form groups to go out and do outdoor activities like hiking.
Food and Dining Being in downtown, the food is amazing and everyone is surrounded by an amazing variety of cuisines. There are sit down restaurants few miles around and food carts in popular spots. There are many places that cater to a college student budget as well.
Dorm Life The dorm life is what you make it. Your roommate can just be another person in the room at all times and the floor you live on can just be a number you press on an elevator. Socialize and get comfortable with your peers because Portland State isn't much of a Greek life campus.
Academic Rigor The University Studies classes require definite work but are not daunting classes meant to make you fail, they are easy. The rest of the academic rigor is based on the major of choice. Writing is one thing that is taken seriously here at PSU, given that there is an open writing center to help out all students whenever possible.
Tips for prospective students You can come to Portland State University and learn a lot from the professors, and go home with a good grade. Don't do that; make sure you network, get involved, and enjoy your time while attending PSU. This isn't a college town campus, it is in downtown Portland, enjoy the urban atmosphere that mixes well with being surrounded by driven students.
In three sentences Portland State University is a very academically focused and diverse college campus. The professors are well experienced and the class sizes are not overwhelmed. The school does need more spirit and pride.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Portland has everything! It is so close to the mountains and the beach! You could ski in the morning and be to the beach surfing by the afternoon!
Food and Dining Great food on and around campus! Portland, OR is known for its food carts!
Academic Rigor Portland State operates on terms (Fall, Winter, and Spring with Summer being optional) this breaks you classes down into 10 week sessions. As for difficulty it always depends on the class, the professor, and how invested you are in your learning. What you get out of your classes depends on how much you put into your classes!
Tips for prospective students Apply early! Although Portland State does have a rolling admissions deadline if you do end up putting it off until the last minute.
In three sentences The motto of Portland, OR is Keep Portland Weird! So of course Portland State University is no exception. Located in the heart of downtown it is an urban campus but is seated on the beautiful Portland Park Blocks.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are a couple blue alert buttons and phone stations on campus which alert campus security. There is a text and e-mail service which alerts students who sign up for it about any security threats that happen on campus. I have not heard of very many incidents of violence on campus. They also have a number you can call if you want an after hours escort to your car. Portland is a very safe city and though campus is right down town it does not feel unsafe walking around campus at night.
Greek Life There are several fraternal houses, I think there are two female houses and two male houses and one co-ed house. They do a lot of bake sales and sometimes host events but they are not the kind of big crazy fraternities that you see in movies. The kids in them are kind of just regular kids, not rich kids or particularly popular kids, kind of just kids who's parents probably were in fraternal houses so they figured it was all a part of the college life experience.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot. I am in two that are related to my major. One is an honors society and one is a networking group.
Great for these types of students Non-traditional, older students, students with disabilities and commuter students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I have not heard of any traditions... we have a smoke free corridor where you can't smoke or produce air-borne toxins... we have an outdoor cob oven and a cob covered bench shelter. I am not sure about anything more unusual.
Bang for the buck I feel that having a college degree is worth the difficulties of the process of getting it. I am planning on attending PSU for my Master's degree as well.
What to do for fun There are a lot of events put on by the various groups on campus but I rarely go to them because I am usually too busy and they are really for the younger students who are not married. The events also cost money for non-students and so my husband would have to pay an entry fee. The rec center and the outdoor recreation center activities are the same.
Food and Dining I am gluten intolerant and there is really very little that i can eat in the way of nutritious cooked food. There is a lot of junk food and not a lot of healthy, body and mind sustaining food. When I am there I am often hungry or have an unbalanced blood sugar because of having to eat too much processed food.
Dorm Life I have not lived in the dorms. I hear that there is generally a good feeling about conditions there but I have not seen them. The cost of living on campus is ridiculously expensive however.
Academic Rigor The professors are challenging and will grade tough but fair. The school is very much a part of the University Industrial complex however.
Tips for prospective students Use all of the resources that your tuition pays for.
In three sentences Portland State is very crowded. It is under funded. It is in need of renovations.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Most people i know are older than me about one or two years, but they're officers of clubs. They're so good at time management and always nice to me. I really mean THANK YOU to all the officers of any clubs.
What to do for fun I've had fun with my friends at downtown and PSU. Besides, i often come to Recreation Building.
Academic Rigor I'd try my best and i won't regret.
Tips for prospective students I think you should get familiar with the college you want to attend (PSU), try to obtain more info from peers because they have experience, know how to utilize all the facility, and probably some tricks. You feel the difference between high school and college right in the first week.
In three sentences Portland State is a nice college that has wonderful staffs; they're so helpful and kind to me. In the first term of college i was so confused and got lost many times, but i could feel the warmth and everyone in a cold weather when they try to help me. Every thing is hard in the first time, yet it would be better and people are out there to support; Portland State is one of supportive places.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Well it all depends on what you like to do for fun.
Food and Dining The food is a great like back home, but ts pretty satisfying. If you do not want to eat at the local campus diner you can always cook back at your dorm or go to a local fast food restaurant that are all over campus.
Dorm Life I currently live on campus and I love it. You get to meet a lot of people. If you stayed up late studying you can literally role out of bed and get to class since everything is very close.
Academic Rigor It all depends on the class you are taking and the amount of credits that define the academic rigor.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and meet new people. if you ever have a question or need help don't be shy that is why there are resources to help you.
In three sentences On a scale of 1-10, I give PSU a 10. I really feel at home and well connected to the campus. This university's main focus is their students.

Food and Dining You are in Downtown Portland! There are numerous establishments you can dine at, and there are famous food cart blocks very near campus for those on the run.
Dorm Life New dorms make living on campus amazing!
Academic Rigor Most of my professors have been amazing. You will know if you get a bad lemon. Make the best of your opportunities and attend office hours if you need help. There are plenty of support serivices available that are provided by the university.
Tips for prospective students Enjoy the park blocks during the nicer months. Make sure you get involved on campus (there are plenty of opportunities).
In three sentences Well rounded student body is present on campus. Being an urban campus, everything is within walking distance. Don't try and depend on street parking though.

Categories Comments Campus Safety One drawback to being in the heart of the city there is a little more crime around.
Clubs and Activities There is a lot to get involved in.
Great for these types of students Students here are from all walks of life.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Farmer's market on the campus park blocks on Saturdays and Wednesdays!
What to do for fun There is a ton of opportunities for fun in Portland and the surrounding areas. Definitely a city for the adrenaline junkies.
Food and Dining A wide variety of food selection on campus and nearby because you're in the heart of Portland.
Academic Rigor These classes are challenging and intense.
Tips for prospective students Come with an open mind and push out any preconceptions.
In three sentences I think Portland State University is an upcoming university. It has a lot to offer in terms of research experience opportunities that larger universities are difficult to gain. Additionally, there is a strong diversity of students coming from all walks of life.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are emergency and alert pillars throughout the campus, which make me feel better when I walking around campus at night and don't have a phone with me. There is also an email list that you could join to receive campus alerts.
Food and Dining There are food carts on campus and just a few blocks on campus, so a quality meal is never too far from reach. There are many family-owned restaurants that offer students meals and treats from various and diverse cultures; my favorite is Chit Chat Cafe's bubble tea.
Dorm Life Living in University Pointe, which is a new apartment complex, has made life as a college student much more simple. University Pointe is minutes away from all the buildings on campus, so I have access to resources on campus at all hours, and it makes it hard to be late to my classes.
Academic Rigor Being in the Honors Program, my skills are constantly challenged and improved with every reading and writing assignment. I've learned how to read and write like a scholar, though it did take a lot of effort and trial and error. The online portion of my Chemistry is definitely worth the money because of all the stress, important information, and quality of the education that it provides.
Tips for prospective students Check in with your advisors every term, even if it's just to tell them that you're doing well or are stressed.
