Great for these types of students

Students that don't care about the status of the college they earn their diploma from. Students that intend to transfer to Purdue West Lafayette but want to get a cheap year out first while living at home. Adults going back to earn a degree. Anyone that wants to take a class here or there in a subject of interest, maybe without even the desire to obtain a degree.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't rule this one out just because it's close to home. Don't torture yourself with debt that you will be struggling to pay off when you graduate, instead think seriously about attending this school. If you really care about the status of the name on your diploma, I would highly suggest studying here if just for a year. The majors are intended to be able to transfer to West Lafayette, but only the first year.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition for any Illinois state school is much higher than this and the smaller, more intimate class sizes are preferred over stadium sized pre-req classes where you can barely understand the TA and forget about the professor even recognizing your face, let alone getting to know you as a student. While the tuition is low, the professors actually care about their students ability to succeed which is priceless. The school provides a lot of technical support, a great gym on campus, and an awesome tutoring center in case students need help in any subject.

    Am enjoying being here

While a lot of my friends attending schools away from home think that I am missing out on the real college experience I beg to differ. I know that my studies here will provide a degree just as useful in attaining a job as theirs and the fact that I wasn't partying every night of the week means my graduating GPA will be much higher than if I had studied somewhere else and gotten the real college experience.

    Am learning a lot

While there has been a professor here and there that was not up to par, overall my learning experience here has been extremely enjoyable. In talking to my high school classmates that went to other schools, it seems that regardless of what school you attend there will be those occasional tenured professors that know they don't need to perform to their greatest ability in order to keep their pay check. All in all I think that the majority of the professors here care about their job and more importantly their students. While it is refreshing to have the occasional young professor, on average expect your professor to be a male with a lot of experience.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who love to learn in an intimate classroom setting that is small, where every student can be one - on - one with their college instructors, and recieve specialized attention.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you join at least some extracurricular activity while at Purdue Calumet University, like Student Government or the school paper, for this looks really good on your resume when applying for jobs, especially on campus. PUC now has a co - curricular transcript, so this is an extra incentive to join student organizations at PUC.

Great for these types of students

Purdue is great for International students and people who want to stay in a small town, but still get a university experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to get involved with the on campus activities. They're really nice and you get to meet the other students, and sometimes faculty. I would also suggest joining a club or organization.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is moderately priced. It's low in comparison to a lot of colleges, though. I think with all the things the school gives back (with all the free events they hold), I suppose it's worth what you pay. On a negative, I do dislike that they charge you around $60 every semester for parking, whether you actually have a car or not. I think that's a bit unreasonable. Overall, I do think

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love that a really nice college is in my area. I can still enjoy the college experience without completely moving away.

    Am learning a lot

I've definitely learned things here that I couldn't have at the colleges in my city. There are classes offered that I couldn't take some places. All of my teachers have been really helpful and hands-on. The small class sizes, for the most part, add to the hands-on feel as well.

Great for these types of students

This is a great school for both Indiana and Illinois students. The tuition is not expensive at all and is cheaper than Illinois tuition. Students who like smaller class sizes and approachable professors should definitely attend this school. Students who love to get involved with extracurricular activities should also apply as there are so many things to choose from.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! There are so many extracurricular activities to choose from, and anyone can start a club as long as there are 3 members. Get to know your professors! The professors are very approachable and care a lot about the students. The class sizes are small, so it makes getting to know the professor and your classmates easier as well.

    Bang for the buck

This school has a good price for tuition. I recommend it especially to Indiana residents and even Illinois residents, because the tuition is cheaper than most schools in Illinois. It is easier to save money and graduate with less debt by attending this school.

    Am enjoying being here

I love how comfortable the atmosphere of the school is. I have gotten to know many people and many professors. Everyone is very helpful and kind. I feel very welcomed. My classes are engaging and are the perfect size, and I enjoy all the clubs there are to offer.

    Am learning a lot

With the small class sizes, it is definitely easier to learn. If I have a problem, I approach the professor, and they are very easy to talk to. They tell me how I can improve and what I should focus on. The tutoring center at the school is very helpful as well.

Great for these types of students

Looking to slow down but still be close to the city. Great for those who are undecided, freshman counselors will help a lot.

    Tips for prospective students

If you care about how you do in college and what your going to do after wards, this University cares too.

    Bang for the buck

I'm out of state and I'm still paying less than other Chicago universities, enough said.

    Am enjoying being here

Being apart of the extra-curricular activities here makes the experience very worth while. The small college feel is great for making good friends fast.

    Am learning a lot

The professors really become involved in your learning process and over the years they get to know you. It's a very good feeling knowing that a professor cares about how you do in your college career.

Great for these types of students

Commuters, students wanting to save money, students who want a more intimate connection with their professors and classmates.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you pay attention to your plan of study and do not rely on you advisor to baby you through college. Stay full-time otherwise you won't graduate in four years. Work on campus if you can find a job. Become friends with your professors because they will want to help you succeed (hopefully). Go into PUC knowing that you're going to hate the food distributor here because they are overpriced and offer crappy food. Seriously. Bring a lunch or go out for lunch.

    Bang for the buck

PUC is incredibly affordable compared to other universities. A lot of students from NWI choose to say at PUC their first year or two to save money, but then transfer to West Lafayette during their junior and senior years. Then again, I've known people who have came from WL back to PUC due to monetary problems.

    Did enjoy being here

I loved the last 2-3 semesters at PUC because of the professors I began working for. I became a TA and became close with a few of the faculty members here and developed life-long friendships with them.

    Did learn a lot

During the first few semesters you might be discouraged due to prereq's you need to take, but rest assured! Once you start taking your core classes is when you'll begin meeting people who have similar interests as you and the professors are a lot more personal. I've had instances where I literally taught myself in class because of the professor's poor teaching methods, but it's just part of college, really. You're not going to agree with all of your professors views and especially with their teaching style. The best way to learn a lot is to personally WANT TO learn a lot.

Great for these types of students

People looking to go back to school, working students, people looking to finish prereqs and transfer somewhere else, people who don't know what they want to do with their lives but need to do something, anyone with an independent personality that wants to get a degree.

    Tips for prospective students

This is a pretty decent school. If this school has a program you're interested in and you can afford it, there's no reason why you shouldn't go. Don't expect your advisors or anyone really, to do much for you, you'll have to figure out what you need to do yourself most of the time.

    Bang for the buck

I agree with the other person that it's ridiculous for students to be charged for parking whether we even drive or not. And I was going to sign up for summer courses, but they got canceled because I couldn't pull $1300 out of thin air for just two classes. While I understand that it's cheaper than most schools, it's still too much for me at times. And I hear tuition will be raised to pay for the $115,000 the school recently spent renovating the campus bookstore.

    Am enjoying being here

The classes are okay and nothing special to be honest. But I never expected school to be fun.

    Am learning a lot

This school offers many programs. I don't think I'm learning very much yet, but I expect that to change once I get my prerequisite classes done.

    Campus Safety

There are many on campus security/police members, although I have never felt threatened at school before. All of the security staff is very friendly - and actually not arrogant and rude!

    Clubs and Activities

The school does a great job of promoting it's clubs and activities. They usually try to bribe students to coming to club promotion events with free food! I love it! Most of these activities are about the same time I would be going to buy a lunch anyways!

Great for these types of students

Purdue Cal is known for it's nursing program. There are many people who are working together in a nursing degree.

    Bang for the buck

Purdue Calumet is definitely a great education for the money. Most of the schools students commute back and forth to school. So they save tons of money not having to pay for room and board. But even the dorms aren't ridiculously expensive like other school. This University is a great choice for the thrifty student.

    What to do for fun

The campus is great about involving students with many different activities, most being free. The campus even offers trips to interesting places. The student lounge building is a great place to relax or hang out. Overall, I have a lot of fun, and I enjoy attending school here. (I hated high school)

    Food and Dining

Meal plans make it easy to be well fed while attending school. The staff is nice and the food is great.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great. Being a very diverse campus, there is no racism or cliches. Everyone one is friendly and the staff is great.

    Academic Rigor

Academic Rigor varies from class to class. Different professors all have different methods of teaching. I love most of my professors. But there is one professor I wish I didn't have. I feel like if I had a more lively and friendly professor, my grades would be better.

    Tips for prospective students

Purdue Calumet is great if you're looking to stay close to home. This university will provide a great education. Just be ready to have technical difficulties online.

    In three sentences

Purdue Calumet is a very diverse and friendly college. I enjoy attended college here. My only wish is that they would improve their online websites.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to stay home, work, and focus on academics this is a great school for you!

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely need to branch our and introduce yourself to new people. It is also a good idea to join clubs such as student government, or if playing sports like baseball or softball become involved. If this is going to be your freshman year do not think just because you are staying home you can slack off because it will come back around and bite you in the butt. So study and if you have any other free time it is easy to find a job in that area or join the health club. There are also gorgeous apartments across the street so if you wanted to stay right near campus it is possible!

Great for these types of students

Gamers, readers, outgoing people...just about anyone really. If you don't like being around people and enjoy peace and quiet, there are places to relax. Likewise, there are places to be among crowds and mingle.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know your instructors personally and form study groups. Don't miss class and make sure to actually learn material and not just attend lectures. Don't get caught up with all the activities that go on during your class time. Always prioritize class and you'll find there is still time to hang out and get free food (sometimes) and such provided by the school on certain days. You won't have to strain yourself to get by, but don't expect to get great results for a minimal effort.

    Bang for the buck

I'm paying ~$9000 a semester for 17 credit hours. I saw far worse tuitions when I applied to other schools. Again, the school offers a lot, and a lot of the things they hold are readily available to anyone. No one really tells you what you can and can't do. You're an adult and they give you freedom. The facilities are nice and you can tell the school provides the best that it can for the students. I have yet to come across a situation in which I could not get help for a class or meet a mentor/faculty member to discuss my plans of study. Some parts of the school could be made to look nicer, but the overall feeling of openness is always there.

    Am enjoying being here

I have made many friends and thoroughly enjoy the facilities offered. There are computers everywhere and a lot of lounges to hang out and talk. You can buy snacks and drinks or go and read in the library. There are movie nights, game rooms, clubs, and so much more. It's really everything I expected and more. I attend help sessions held by peers, and can meet with mentors and such fairly frequently and easily. Basically, everything is at the tips of your fingers.

    Am learning a lot

This is my first college experience, and it's tough work. If you balance note-taking with reading the textbook, you can get a decent GPA. The teachers I've met are all kind and all have a sense of humor. They make themselves readily available and will spend time to answer questions--even in a large lecture hall. They point you to where you can get help, they give you review questions, and they even offer advice on how to manage your time and when to do assignments. Without them, I would've been at a complete loss for where to even begin. They create a positive environment and you never feel intimidated. At the end of the day, you still have to put in individual effort to learn some of the harder material.

There are many activities and organizations to join along with meeting new friends on campus. There is a lounge where a lot of students go between breaks, which contains a pingpong table along with a game room.

    Academic Rigor

It's easier to accumulate a higher GPA here than at a larger university. Also, class sizes are smaller, so getting to know the professor is easier.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not procrastinate on applying for scholarships. Talk to your professors so they can get to know you. This will come in handy when asking for recommendations.

    Campus Safety

The campus seems pretty safe. Campus police patrol all over the campus and there are phones and buttons that are set up all over campus in case you need assistance.

    Greek Life

There are sororities and fraternities to join but I don't know anything about them.

    Clubs and Activities

Lots of clubs to join but if there is not a club that has been started they will let you and help you start your own club. There are intramural sports too.

    Bang for the buck

Definitely worth the money considering the help they offer and the choices in major you have. Lots of financial aid and other scholarships.

    What to do for fun

There are fun things to do like, play pool, watch T.V., or just hang out. There are also Wii games the set up that you can join in on that I love.

    Food and Dining

There are a lot of choices around campus. The cafeteria food isn't too bad. They also have Starbucks and handmade sandwiches. They prices is a little bit ridiculous.

    Dorm Life

I live off-campus but I have been inside the dorms. They are all new buildings. The common area and rooms are really nice, clean, decorative.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at Purdue are difficult enough that you do need to study a lot. There are really tough courses and a lot of different majors to choose from.

    In three sentences

It is a very diverse school that accepts students of any race or religion. The staff is seems very eager to assist any student that is struggling or just has a question. There are a lot of useful resources available to all students.

    Bang for the buck

I hear from friends who attend other schools that have a tuition three times the size of mine so I personally think it's worth it.

    What to do for fun

Sometimes I see people out in the field next to the dorms flying kites or playing football. There are also lots of things to find to do beyond the campus.

    Food and Dining

In my opinion the food and snacks made available by Purdue is really good. There are a couple snack shops placed arround the campus that sell everything from soups and pastries (freshly made from a local bakery) to fountain pop and smoothies. And its nice because if you want something different there are plenty of restaurants around the campus to choose from.

    Dorm Life

I, myself, do not live in a dorm on campus but from what I have heard from others the dorms are very nice. I know they are a new accommodation to the campus.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor really depends on not only the instructors you are assigned to but also depending on chosen course of study.

    Tips for prospective students

A good tip of advice I can give to a prospective student is to not get overwhelmed. I took my first year at a small community college and then transferred to this massive university. I can be easy to feel swallowed by all of the buildings and people but just remember to relax.

    In three sentences

The campus is a very beautiful and very inviting place to be, I feel. There is always a quiet place to sit down and concentrate. The only thing I do not like about the campus is how a little spread out it is.

    Campus Safety

Is located in South Hammond, not the safest of neighborhoods, but with the campus police I do feel safe.

    Greek Life

    None.

    Clubs and Activities

There are not very many clubs to be a part of.

Great for these types of students

    Engineers, nurses.

    Bang for the buck

Same education as a large university for a quarter of the price.

    What to do for fun

Intramurals and joining clubs are the main way to have fun.

    Food and Dining

There is a good selection of food in the dining court, however it is much cheaper to take a quick five minute drive to McDonald's or Subway to get more bang for your buck.

    Dorm Life

New dorms were just built, although I personally have not lived in them. They are more upscale yet are more affordable compared to other college dorms.

    Academic Rigor

The combination of lectures, labs, homework, and projects have given me a well rounded education and prepared me for my career as an electrical engineer.

    Tips for prospective students

Since this is more of a commuter college, plan your schedule to pack more on one day so you may not have to come to school two or three times a week.

    In three sentences

The campus is convienently located right off the highway. I feel the education I received will prepare me for my career as an electrical engineer. The liberal arts courses (comm, English, psych, etc) gave me more perspective on life and opened my mind to see things in much different ways and allowed me to more openly communicate with others.

    Campus Safety

In general, the campus is located in a safe area of Hammond. Between the Hammond PD who can be seen regularly patrolling the area around the campus to the PUC Police who do a very good job keeping the campus/students safe I would say that the campus is very safe, probably safer than the neighborhood I live in currently in Chicago.

    Clubs and Activities

You name it, there is a club or organization for it...and if you're into something that isn't already represented, why not start one?

Great for these types of students

Aside from commuter students who live in the area, or the random non-traditional student like myself, this University offers tremendous opportunity for those who might be unsure of what to major in, but want to get going on your studies at a well regarded 4 year school where your courses will transfer. Many students do a year or two here then transfer to Purdue's main campus in West Lafayette, IN. The Nursing program here is excellent, in fact it is one of about 15 in the country that is Joanna Briggs Institute affiliated, also it is the Indiana Center for Evidenced Based Practice in Nursing. Aside from Nursing, various engineering and business programs are solid here as well. I should add that it is also a pretty good choice for those seeking the college experience of living on campus without getting lost at a huge University.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

None that I am aware of.

    Bang for the buck

I'm mixed here, because IF you are an Indiana resident and going to be paying In-State tuition rates, I feel that this school is an EXCELLENT value and bang for the buck. IF you are like me and paying out of state rates it's a little ouchy, still in my opinion worth EVERY penny for the quality of education that is offered, but it's a little steep.

    What to do for fun

I'm in Nursing school, and I work. I'm not sure what fun is...I remember fun, vaguely. Ok, in all seriousness this is another area where it is exactly what you make of it, the students and faculty at PUC are all very approachable, so it should be easy to make friends. Additionally, being so close to so many things in NWI as well as Chicago, you should have no problem entertaining yourself should you be lacking in the friend department. Also, the University does a decent job of offering different activities, events, etc to get people involved and interacting with each other both on campus and off.

    Food and Dining

Like most other large institutions these days, the food service is farmed out to Chartwells, or Sodexho or some other faceless corporate giant like that. It's mediocre at best and fairly expensive but there are microwaves on campus and some options near campus. Also, there is ONE hidden gem... the school of tourism and hospitality management runs an AWESOME cafe/restaurant that is very cheap and of very good quality.

    Dorm Life

I cannot state 1st hand, as I do not live on campus, but the anecdotal reports I have gotten from friends or heard through the grapevine are all extremely positive.

    Academic Rigor

I am in the Nursing program at PUC so I feel that I know a thing or two about academic rigor and high expectations. IN short, you're going to WORK...and you're going to LEARN. This isn't a school where you can phone it in or half a** your courses and simply get a degree Having transferred to PUC from another 4 year school, I can say that in my experience the expectations and the faculty at Purdue Calumet are simply second to none. Even in my non Nursing courses, I have found them all to be challenging and well taught by great faculty, nearly all of whom hold PhD's in their field.

    Tips for prospective students

College and your education are just like life, you will get out EXACTLY what you put in. Put forth the effort to get the education and experience that you want. This is a good school, with some programs that are known and very well regarded nationally, being part of the Purdue system is a huge positive, as the powers at be are not going to have a weaker sibling satellite campus dragging things down for a world renowned University.

    In three sentences

Feels like a much larger and residential University. Great amenities offered on campus ranging from the fitness center/gym or the library. All in all it is a modern-ish campus located in at tranquil setting in a decent/safe section of Hammond. I know quite a few students who live ON campus, and their reports are extremely positive as well.

    What to do for fun

Within about 10 minutes from campus, there is a shopping plaza that includes stores such as Target, Best Buy, Marshalls, etc... There are a variety of restaurants available nearby as well along with a Showplace and a shopping mall which is a little furthur away.

    Food and Dining

There is one main dining hall on campus along with two other smaller stores on campus. Everyday there are fresh soups served along with pizza and baked chicken. There are specials every day and also Starbucks is available in one of the Markets on campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life here is very nice as most of the apartments have just been built in the past few years. They feature individual rooms with a shared living room along with a sink and shower in each room. Most dorms also come with a small kitchen area and also on each floor there is a common lounge area in which everyone may share.

    Academic Rigor

Depending of course on which classes you choose to enroll in, I would say that the difficulty in each course simply depends on the course itself and its professor. Sometimes you may get a more lenient professor and other times you may get one that is much more stern in their grading.

    Tips for prospective students

When taking classes at Purdue University Calumet, make sure that you take advantage of the supplemental instructors and the Professor's office hours. Whether you feel as though you need the help or not, it is important to meet people and get connected to the campus. The best way to get information is simply to speak to current students as they will have the inside information and will be able to give you advice that others may not be able to.

    In three sentences

Purdue University Calumet is a good school with dorms no more than a five minute walk to campus. The campus is comprised of 6 main buildings in which some are interconnected that make it very nice when the weather gets messy. Overall, the professors here are very intelligent and are very open to helping any students who need it.

    Campus Safety

I feel 100% safe on this campus. There are call centers and help all around the campus. The college campus patrol is directly behind of their biggest buildings. It is a very clean and well kept place.

    Clubs and Activities

Although this campus dose not have any sports that are official college campus sports other then basketball it is great on keeping the activities going. There are so many sports, clubs, and intermerals for any type of person out there.

Great for these types of students

This campus is perfect for students than want to work and go to school and save money. Purdue Cal is awesome with scheduling around work and daily life. The advisers and teachers know that their student have a life outside school work with their students to help them push forward.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to their sister college its is about a grand or two less and yet it still teaches the same criteria. The teachers and advisers are always looking for ways to help students save money. And, since its is in more of a community setting rather then a traditional college campus setting everywhere around is about saving money and living is less costly.

    What to do for fun

I like to go to the game room/ pool hall area in the Student Union in between class periods. Also the study area across the hall is a good place to do homework, sleep, or just have a nice place to chill with friends. Also, there is a gym that has wonderful equipment then helps pass the time. Personal trainers are free for students and it keeps a good work out schedule.

    Food and Dining

I enjoy going to the cafeteria and the food is delicious. There is always a good verity and they count of the students for feed back on what they like to eat. From vegetarians to work out body builders, there is a tasty item for everyone.

    Dorm Life

Although i have not lived in the dorms, i have friends that do and love it. It is a well kept complex inside and out. The rooms are not too small and the walk to campus if literally across the street.

    Academic Rigor

It is a safe and helpful campus, but neatness is kept. The patrol around the campus do not use intimidation as a way of keeping order; they use more of a keep it friendly and safe and it will all be good approach. Basically, it is a very chill campus.

    Tips for prospective students

    - Call the campus and tell them that you are interested and need information on how to get started. - Go to www.purduecal.edu - Go to the campus and just take a walk around, you will enjoy it!

    In three sentences

This school is way more connected and is more of a community oriented campus than their sister college Purdue University WL. I love this campus and couldn't imaging graduating from any other college. If someone were to be struggling on which college campuses to pick from, I would suggest Purdue University Calumet hands down.

    Academic Rigor

Purdue is known for it's high academic achievement and expects nothing less at the Calumet campus. All of my professors show interest in the success of each and every one of their students and make themselves available to help any student who needs help.

    Tips for prospective students

    Academic Rigor

This is my second semester here. Every professor I have had from organic/boichemistry, statitics, ethics, and now my nursing courses have been awesome! They have been very organized and great with outlining all of the class expectations in the syllabus. The teachers are strict enough to keep you on track, but understanding enough to allow room for you to not be stressed. Almost every class I have seen has suplemental insruction (free tutoring sessions) offered and they are offered various times of day to accomadate any schedule.

    Tips for prospective students

As a college student, finding the right path to course completion can be overwhelming. Once you get assigned to your advisor, become a regular in their office or through email. Keep in touch with them throughout the semester to follow up with class progress and to discuss the next best steps for class options.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We do not currently have any unusual traditions or locations on campus.

    Bang for the buck

The pricing for tuition is not too bad but is a little high for out of state students. The campus does a great job of giving back to the students by hosting a lot of events for us.

    What to do for fun

The school does a lot of fun events for students. I am involved in a wide variety of organizations that make me happy and I have so much fun getting to know people in the organizations and building lasting relationships with them.

    Food and Dining

There is only one dining option for students. This option is not too expensive but is not personally to my tastes. However, if you live in the dorms you have a kitchen and can make your own food.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are amazing and full of so many great people. Once you get involved in the dorms you fall in love. The rooms are suites so its four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and living area for four people. Your roommates really make or break the experience for you until you get to know more people.

    Clubs and Activities

Great for these types of students

Students that don't want to go far away from home.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    none

    Bang for the buck

The education is mediocre and it is way to expensive; especially for the location it is in. There are no major restaurants or shops near the school. You have to drive about fifteen minutes out to find something to do.

    What to do for fun

There isn't anything fun to do at Purdue Calumet, or in Hammond Indiana for that matter. This also could be because I grew up in the area and nothing catches my interest. There is shopping a long Indianapolis Blvd., but that gets old.

    Food and Dining

There is only the cafeteria on campus that is only open until 4p.m. Most of the food is overpriced and is really bad for you. There isn't much to choose from.

    Dorm Life

The dorms give you some sense of freedom. Besides the fact that you have to check everyone in, it's a great experience. You have four roommates and each one get their own rooms with twin size beds. You share a living room and kitchen. There are two bathrooms.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are not hard but the teachers try to make them a lot harder. Keep any notes and take notes are the key in all the classes. Always ask questions.

    Tips for prospective students

I would tell prospective students to create a good rapport with your teachers. Let them know who you are and if you fall behind always keep them informed. There is a counseling center available that is free as long as you're enrolled; use it! The counseling center is a great feature to help adjust to college.

    In three sentences

Purdue Calumet is very expensive. Most teachers create a curriculum that is so challenging that if they were a student; they probably wouldb't pass their own classes. Also, the parking on campus is terrible.

    Bang for the buck

I think Purdue being a community college is a little expensive. Over the years the tuition keeps getting raised, but the classes stay the same. There is no real reason that the tuition needs to be raised and if it keeps being raised students may not be able to continue their education.

    What to do for fun

Purdue offers different student activities. They will email students and post fliers around campus. If students do not want to do things on campus they could do to Chicago or the mall is not far from Hammond.

    Food and Dining

Hammond is not far from numerous different restaurants. Plus, Chicago is not that far either. There is different food choices for every food palate.

    Academic Rigor

I am only in the first year of school. The classes are not hard if you apply yourself. The only subject at Purdue Cal I think is lacking is the Math department. The way they teach the students or lack there of, makes it difficult for students.

There were minimal issues while I attended and I always felt safe, even walking to my car late at night.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a selection of clubs and organizations. I was not a part of any of them but they did have a presence on campus.

Great for these types of students

I think this is a great school for students looking to transfer to a larger school in the future. The limited major selection minimizes the opportunity to graduate with a specialized degree.

    Bang for the buck

If you are looking for an inexpensive education, especially if you live nearby, it is a good choice. The school has many resources available to students, but they are sometimes difficult and up to the student to seek out.

    What to do for fun

The surrounding town has little to offer in my opinion. I am a local of a neighboring town and always preferred to drive into Chicago for any recreational activities.

    Food and Dining

There is generally a good selection of food items from the few food service locations on campus. Most of them are small and have small selections but most often offer fresh fruits and vegetables and healthy options. The main cafeteria is pretty similar to what you might expect at a high school.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in the dorms. I did have friends who lived here and had nothing negative to say. They are limited and the rooms are very small.

    Academic Rigor

Purdue Calumet is what you make of it. Being a small campus, it still offers many of the resources you need to be a successful student. However, its low graduation rate proves is an example of how easy it is to not succeed here.

    Tips for prospective students

In recent years, buildings were modified so that students may walk from classes with minimal need to go outside in bad weather. Despite the addition of a parking garage, parking is almost always an issue. Arrive early and get to know the parking lots well so that you can find some of the less obvious spots that others drive past.

Purdue University Calumet, or Purdue Cal as most call it, is a small school where you can expect to see many familiar faces around campus. Class sizes are generally 30-40 people with an exception to some of the larger lectures. The PUC police be on it! You can not commit any of crime on campus and get away with it. They are constantly sending emails about how to stay safe on campus and who to be aware of.

    Clubs and Activities

For a small campus, Purdue-cal sure does have a lot of organizations to join. Clubs such as Black Student Union, Social Justice Club, and Students for Justice in Palestine are great activist clubs to be involved in. The fitness and recreation center sponsors intramural sports, a great way for students to be part of a sport whether they are highly skilled in that field or they just joined just for the fun of it.

Great for these types of students

Purdue-cal is a great school for students; who like a quiet area to study, students who love learning about new cultures, and last most of all students who are up for a challenge.

    What to do for fun

Hammond is a very plain area to catch fun. However, the city of Chicago is about 15 minutes west of campus and many national and international students go there to enjoy the city life on weekends.

    Food and Dining

Food on campus is good but when you're a student and you're balling on a budget it can be quite the pricey. I advise that one packs lunch. The dorms are even worse because on those long study nights students have to opt for the snacks in the vending machines, or ordering food because the cafeteria closes at 7.

    Dorm Life

There is a service desk on the first floor, a lounge area on every floor, a computer lab on the second floor and a vending machine on each floor. There are only two dorms which we refer to as the University Villages. There are only 4 floors in the UV's. In every suite there are a common area (1 single couch and 3 seated couch) and a kitchen (fridge, cabinets, oven with stove top, microwave, and four seated table). There are 2-4 rooms in one suite; two roommates share one bathroom. The bedroom is equipped with a bed, a desk, drawers, and a mirror. The dorms are like a five star hotel. Unfortunately I can only give it four stars because there is hardly ever interaction between suite-mates on different floors.

    Academic Rigor

When I was entering leaving elementary school (5th grade) I was told it was it was going to be hard and yet throughout my middle school years I was hardly ever phased. When I was entering High School I was told it was going to be challenging but it was only a battle during my senior year. Now I have entered college and I see the rigor that my many advisers have warned me about.
