Great for these types of students

Outgoing, interactive students that want to meet new people. Very friendly campus and extremely helpful. The springboard to success program worked very well on all of us new freshmen, and helped us get to know the campus and its people better.

    Tips for prospective students

Get ready for some walking, but the campus is amazingly beautiful so there will be no worrys there. Know what and where your classes will be located, because some only have 15 minutes in between. I'd recommend it to anyone, its an amazing college to look into. It also has a wide variety of intramural sports and club sports as well. It is a very user friendly campus.

Great for these types of students

A social student would do well here. It's a big school, but not ridiculously big. Lots of activities are available. A prospective student looking into this school should be very pro-getting involved. There are intramurals, club sports, Greek life (but no Greek housing), student government, etc.

    Tips for prospective students

The campus is absolutely gorgeous and the longest walk you will have is about 10-15 minutes depending on how fast (or slow) you walk. The school is currently being changed from Division II to Division I, so the Vadalabene Center (the gym and fitness complex) is being expanded. The campus has a lot to offer for students, and security is great (it seems a bit over the top sometimes, but it's for our safety).

If you like: ~ To meet people from all over the USA and world ~ Nature and animals ~ To learn about yourself and others ~ Cheer for division 1 soccer and volleyball

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved just like high school, when you join activities you meet so many new people! Take advantage of the Student Fitness Center! It is apart of your tuition!

    Bang for the buck

I think I am getting a great education here. Housing is wonderful and the prices are reasonable.

    Am enjoying being here

I love SIUe a lot. I have lived in housing for both my years here and I love it. The Resident Assistants are wonderful and help when you need them.

    Am learning a lot

Classes here at SIUe are challenging. However SIUe is a great place to learn outside of the classroom. Your instructors and professors make it a priority to teach you what you need to know and help get real-life, hands-on experience.

Great for these types of students

There is a substantial number of majors offered here at SIUe. There is also a student organization for almost every one of them. For students that major in or like business, there is a business fraternity where both men and women can join. There is also a minority organization called OMBUS. For those who are interested in science, there is Cougars Volunteering for Science, where students do science projects at elementary schools. We also have Pre-Medical, Pre-Dental, Pre-Pharmacy, and Pre-Optometry organizations. For those who earn a 3.5 GPA or higher in their freshman or sophomore year, they can be a part of the nationally established honors programs of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars or Golden Key. Both of these organizations offer scholarship, intern, volunteer, and study abroad opportunities. There are also a number of leadership/volunteer groups, one of them being the Student Leadership Development Program. These organizations are by no means all-inclusive, but are just a few of the many extracirriculars a student can partake in.

    Tips for prospective students

Develop good relationships with your teachers. Most of them enjoy talking to students and this often ensures they will be a little more lenient when it comes to grading, if they know you are trying and working hard. They are very helpful and will do whatever they can to help their students learn.

    Bang for the buck

The resources here are almost unlimited. There is an office for everything one can think of where information about a particular subject can be obtained. There are over 300 student organizations and we also have a variety of greek organizations. It is also possible for one to start their own organization with a mere agreement of four other people. The gym, known as the vadalabene center, has a vast array of workout machines, a track, an indoor pool, and a variety of classes one can take such as yoga and even belly dancing. The co-ed freshman dorms are very nice, with only four people to a bathroom and two people to a room. The rooms and bathrooms are very spacious. There is no curfew for freshman and from each dorm (of which are 3) the cafeteria is only a few minutes walk away. Upperclassman can choose to live in either Cougar Village or Evergreen, where 2-4 people share an apartment. The cost of education is very reasonable, which was one of the main reasons I chose to attend.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is very scenic, and it is the second largest in the nation. It only takes 10-15 minutes to walk across the part of campus where classes are held, but a lot of the surrounding land is covered in trees. There are many food places and grocery stores located just a few minutes off campus and there are three malls in the area. The body of students that attend are very diverse. The campus often hosts free events and gives away everything one can think of from ice cream to key chains.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers here at SIUe are dedicated to ensuring that their students understand the material taught in their classes. Before I attended college, I heard many horror stories of professors who do not really teach but expect students to learn on their own time. This made me weary of the grades I would earn, but after taking one semester all of my worries vanished. Every teacher I have taken in the two years I've been at SIUe were exceptional and honestly care about their students education. Of course, every teacher cannot be perfect and some classes are more difficult than others. There is no need to panic though; when registering for a class the teacher's names are listed and can be inquired about on ratemyproffessor.com or by asking around. The average rating for teachers here is 3.45 according to this website, and many of them score higher than that. I do not question whether I am receiving an adequate education at SIUe.

Great for these types of students

Pre-Pharm and Pre-Med students along with Engineering, Education and Art majors. Though there are ~15,000 students, you'll run into the same people quite a lot. Try joining at least 2 activities (fraternity/sorority, club, Intramural sport) and you'll be well on your way to finding a circle of friends. Though I am not in a frat, I can still say that Greek life here at SIUe is pretty limited, supposedly there will be frat/sorority houses being built, but I have no idea whether that is actually true or not.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to read ratemyprofessor.com when signing up for classes, SIUe has some really awesome professors and some terrible professors. I would definitely recommend using the Roommate Finder in order to find a roommate that matches up well with you, there are a lot of lower level students that attend here and you don't want to get stuck with them. If you are a good student, apply for the Honors College. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made because I sign up for classes first as a Senior (Classes fill up really fast here which is bad for Freshmen) and I took one 3 credit hour Honors 120 class and got out of Eng 101/102 and SPC 103 so one 3 credit hour class for honors (which is fairly easy) got me 9 credit hours essentially.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is lowest in the state for a 4-year university so no complaints there, but don't expect to get a big scholarship even if you are a really good student in high school. I had a 4.0 and a 29 ACT and only got $2k a year (The Meridian scholarship program is very competitive and more of a diversity project). The meal plan is a RIPOFF, food is very much overpriced though I still recommend the smaller meal plan for most freshman unless you are a serious athlete and need 4,000 calories a day.

    Am enjoying being here

There is a large amount of not-so-intelligent people from STL and Chicago that can be quite obnoxious, but once you learn to avoid them it's not that bad because none of them are in my classes (currently on Pre-Pharm track). The campus is absolutely beautiful and nothing is more than a 10-15 minute walk, I highly encourage students to get a bike though, it makes things much easier.

    Am learning a lot

Classes here are fairly engaging, though be warned that Calculus 1 is very much a weed-out class. (I had a 4.0 in high school and am borderline C right now) The classes you take and the amount will determine how much you learn. If you have to take Chem 121a (which most freshman with a major worth anything will have to do) then take Holovics, he's an amazing professor.

Great for these types of students

Anyone that is motivated and willing to increase their knowledge.

    Tips for prospective students

Wake early,be prepared to walk to class(usually 10 minutes or less from parking lots no more than 15),prepared to learn with all needed materials to learn, listen to your professors, take notes, ask questions if you do not understand, and meet with your professor during office hours for extra help if needed.

    Bang for the buck

The price of tuition verses the education are phenomenal portioned. SIUE is one of the cheapest universities to attend in Illinois and it is worth every penny.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being at SIUE because it is close to my home. I commute to school and I meet with study buddies and have lunch at Pizza Hut,Taco Bell, Auntie Annie's, or star bucks that are all located on campus in the MUC. My professors help me during their office hours and respond to my questions via e-mail in a timely manner. I like the landscape and design of the campus buildings. The classroom halls are not too far or hard to find. The academic advisers help you set up your classes to your availability in most cases.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned so much more in my two years of college at SIUE than I did throughout high school. I am a better student now because i am doing this at my freewill.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for a walk from the parking lot. Don't feel stupid when asking questions, that's what the teachers are there for. And even if you need extra help, the teachers will help you out or there are others places on campus to get help at!

    Bang for the buck

Although the campus is extraordinarily big, it definitely costs a pretty penny to attend. But even though tuition is rather high, it's still a college worth looking at.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is absolutely beautiful, but it's a walk. The people around here are really nice and they befriend others easily. No one here has the same attitudes that high school students usually do.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers here are really helpful when they teach and if you ask a question, they are more than willing to answer it for you.

    Campus Safety

SIUe is rated as one of the top 50 safest campuses in the nation, and has been for many years in a row. I've never been in a circumstance where I felt I was in danger. The scariest thing about SIUe is their deer. They're so used to people you can walk right up to them without them running away. (creepy, but awesome.)

    Greek Life

The Greek Life is pretty good at SIUe. The only downfall is that there isn't any on campus Greek Housing. It's still a great way to network, and every Greek person I know loves it and says it was the best decision they've ever made.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of club and intramural sports to participate in. Most likely any sport you played in high school or ever wanted to play will be here.

Great for these types of students

SIUe is very diverse, but I've noticed the social people that make a lot of friends always seem to love SIUe the most.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

SIUe's campus is very different compared to others. It's right on the outside of Edwardsville. It is one of the biggest campuses in the nation and it is a nature reserve. It's extremely beautiful and there are always new places you'll discover on the campus.

    Bang for the buck

SIUe is great if you're looking for a bang for the buck school. It is one of the cheapest University's out there. (under 17,000 for room, board, and tuition) It's academics are still outstanding even though it's one of the cheapest University's. (Was a no brainer for me.)

    What to do for fun

There are endless possibilities of things to do for fun at SIUe. There are always pick-up games such as football, basketball, sand volleyball, or soccer to play if you like athletics. The campus throws all sorts of events every week such as a foam party, Halloween party, Greek week, Springfest, and all sorts of fun events. A lot of people live just off campus too, so there's always places to hang out on the weekends.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining at SIUe are amazing! There are places to eat in many different buildings so it's easy to grab a snack between any classes. SIUe's food and dining include: an Entree's, a pasta bar, nacho bar, potato bar, Deli/Panini/ a Grill, Wok (Chinese), Chick-Fil-A, University Restaurant, Kaldi's, Starbucks, Pizza Hut/Wing Street, Taco Bell, Union Station, Skywalk Food Court, Commons Grill, Woodland Cart, Bluff Cafe, Auntie Ann's, Sweet E's (ice cream), and my personal favorite Freshens. There's also a rumor on campus about a Panara Bread for the 2012-2013 year.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at SIUe is very fun, and the rooms are actually very big compared to a lot of other schools. (esp. other University's) There's never an excuse to be bored while you're in the dorms, because you will have tons of friends that you can go up to anytime. I currently live in Bluff Hall, and the dorm has been throwing fun events the whole year.

    Academic Rigor

I personally have had all great professors that have all been willing to work with students outside of the class. Most of my professors know me by name. SIUe also has a great tutor program that is free to all students.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be shy! If you make a lot of friends at SIUe not only will you have a great social life, but you will always be able to get help with school work. Networking is the key to success.

    In three sentences

SIUe is an average sized University on a large beautiful campus located in the metropolitan St. Louis area. It is currently one of the quickest growing Universities in the United States. If you want to get top of the line academic's, and leave with a great social college experience this is the school for you.

Great for these types of students

SIUE is great for students who want to live a full and balanced life. There is lots of opportunity for fun and lots of opportunity for advancement. Take as many of these opportunities as possible without burning yourself out. SIUE is great for students who have their priorities in order. SIUE is great for students who have not done well in the past and want a fresh start.

    Tips for prospective students

Getting here will not be hard. Once you're here: go to class. Don't skip unless it's an emergency. I've made that mistake in a couple classes and the results were all but catastrophic. Don't try to get through with the least effort possible. Your adult life will begin here and fewer people will be peaking over your shoulder to make sure you're doing what you're supposed to than ever before. Don't let your freedom go to your head. Balance fun and work or, better yet: study something you enjoy, so that you won't be miserable working hard. Don't spend tens of thousands of dollars to come here and risk not getting a job when you get out.

    Bang for the buck

The Construction Management program here has placed all of its graduates. That's right: 100% of people who earned Bachelors Degrees in Construction Management either had jobs or graduate schools lined up when they graduated. You want to expand your horizons to be able to work in a higher-paying, more fulfilling job than you are able to get without a college education. SIUE can help. The faculty here are not in the business of separating boys from men so to speak, but instead train people to become effective workers and contribute to society. You can do well here. SIUE will set you up for success and give you the ability to compete in the area of work that interests you.

    Am enjoying being here

SIU Edwardsville does a lot to cultivate community, creativity, recreation, and safety on campus. The Morris University Center has a Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, as well as seven or eight less common food services including a relatively inexpensive Asian stir-fry stand. There is also a billiards room and a bowling alley. On the main floor, there is a large square pit lined with couches that is often used to host entertainers - from student musicians to belly dancers - and monthly multicultural days when clubs that celebrate the various ethnic heritages represented on campus will provide free food and entertainment typical of their culture. The Student Recreation Facility is large and extensively equipped. There are multiple weight rooms, an indoor pool, a group activities room with aerobics equipment and a speed bag and heavy bag for martial arts training, a rock climbing room, several basketball, squash, and racket ball courts, a running track, and lots of cardiovascular exercise machines. The Gardens are a beautiful, tranquil place to go for a walk, clear your mind, and just relax. A small pond at the edge of the gardens has a really cool pagoda gazebo surrounded by fragrant fir trees and, in the spring and late summer, lots of lush flowers. It is very easy to make friends at this school. Most people are very easy to talk to and have a good balance of work and play. SIU Edwardsville isn't a party school but it's not so rigorous as to be lifeless either. Clubs, classes, and even work-study jobs are great ways to meet some of the really cool people here.

    Am learning a lot

All of the general education classes in which I have enrolled have managed to peak my interest in topics that I otherwise would not have payed any attention. I was unaware of many of the remarkable events retold to me by the instructors of my French History and History of Black America classes. So many inspiring people and stories are often overshadowed by those whom our elementary and secondary education boards deem more important. The instructors here, overall, organize and present information in an engaging format and help develop a connection between their students and the subject matter so that test taking and paper writing is not generally difficult. The same is true of my general education English, Math, and Science classes. If you come to class regularly and pay attention, you will learn a lot; and if you learn a lot, you will do well on assessments.

Great for these types of students

The types of students I believe would best fit SIUE's standards are those who don't mind walking, and those who are committed to their studies more so than their social life. Students should be able to know their way around the school and students shouldn't be afraid of building rapports with their professors. Students should be willing to lead and excel academically, socially and personally.

    Tips for prospective students

I would have to say take the work seriously, take these teachers seriously and most importantly take yourself. Don't come to SIUE and then begin to slack off because that follows you no matter where you go. Always be on time for classes. Practice time management. But most importantly, have fun. Make it where you'll have time for both work and play. Being well-rounded is a must if you want to survive at this school.

    Bang for the buck

Financially, I think it would depend on your situation. For me, I had to leave due to not having enough funds to pay for the full year. Academically, it is worth the risk but just make sure you filed your FAFSA early and that you have been awarded plenty of scholarships if you want to go to this school. Other than that, SIUE gives you a pretty good bang for your buck.

    Did enjoy being here

I enjoyed my time at SIUE. The scenic views of the landscapes, the constant roaming deer and the atmosphere of nature are things I believe future students are going to enjoy. Plus, there's always an event going on. Just make sure you have a vehicle ready because most of these events are in other cities. But they are trips made worthy.

    Did learn a lot

When it comes to learning, SIUE is the cream of the crop. With its fairly small classrooms and teachers who are there to help whenever you need it, SIUE ranks #1 in my book. While there, I was able to challenge myself and what I knew about Writing, Mathematics and even English. Trust me, the teachers are no joke and the schoolwork isn't either.

Great for students who want to learn while having fun, meet new people, and be introduced to urban life.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early! Priority means a lot!

    Bang for the buck

SIUE has a variety of new and exciting things always being built on its campus. Along with a state of the art physical fitness center, there are many new science labs and other fun things always being built.

    Will enjoy being here

Along with a great small-town feel, SIUE is close to the very urban area of St. Louis, Missouri which allows you to have the best of both worlds.

    Will learn a lot

SIUE has a great reputation for inspiring people to be the best that they can be.

    Tips for prospective students

My greatest peice of advice to prospective students would be to really examine the desires and dreams that burn within you. There are countless students who (sometimes unconsciously) go into college pursing a career because it is highly esteemed with great financial payoff, and find themselves either changing their major or unsatisfied with thier end occupation. When you are fascinated with what you're studying no one has to force or even tell you to study- A's will come naturally. SIUE offers many opportunities to be creative and study or do what you love to do in a style that is truly your own so get involved and explore all the campus has to offer. Just from personal experience- when you put yourself into your work it becomes something that has never been seen or done before; SIUE allows the freedom and even encourages you to do so because it will cause both you and the university to look good and receive recognition.

    Am enjoying being here

Over the course of time I have been here I've met countless people of all shapes, sizes, colors, ethnicities, interests, fears, etc. The relationships I've made have been probably one of the most significant factors causing me to really enjoy being here. I've made awesome friends here who are now like brothers and sisters. SIUE is not a crowded place where you're just another student with a backpack, people know each other; even the administrators are friendly and known around campus. Besides the amazing friendships made the campus is beautiful, surrounded by very scenic woods, lakes, wildlife (deer) etc. One last note, the dorms are of very high quality. Excellent place to stay; there are photos and virtual tours available on the school website. www.siue.edu

    Am learning a lot

I have been here for 3 years now and can honestly say that the quality of education here at SIUE has been excellent. I'm studying biochemistry here with a minor in physics and have enjoyed every moment of it. The university provides so many opportunities to expand your learning through practical and real-life experiences. For example in the chemistry, biology, and physics department ( as well as every other department) there are opportunities to do hands on research in the laboratories with the professors. The opportunities are open for whoever has the desire to pursue them. Compared to other big named schools SIUE has an awesome environment because there isn't thousands of people competing for the same opportunity. You truely recieve a quality education here I've also been able to travel with students from SIUE as they compete and display their knowledge at various symposiums and competitions and many have recieved national recognition and honors.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for the student that likes to feel like they are a part of one big family.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure all applications and paper work are in well before the deadline. Spaces here fill up very quickly.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition here is not expensive in the first place. Actually I believe that it is the cheapest state school in Illinois. The book rental fee is included in your tuition so when you go to pick up your books, you don't have to come out of pocket.

    Am enjoying being here

There are a ton of things to do here at SIUE. No student has any reason at all to say they don't have anything to do.

Tuition is nice at SIUE. You get a lot more education than the price you pay for tuition. There are so many ways to save money at this university.

    Will enjoy being here

I'm a returning student heading back to SIUE, but I always loved the atmosphere of the campus. The housing is extremely nice as well and very safe.

    Will learn a lot

Majority of the teachers & professors are willing to help you outside of class! Some are better than others, but you will have that any school you go to.

for both instate and out of state students, the school offers a marketable education for those on a tight budget.

    What to do for fun

well, there is an entire bowling alley in the main food court with a small arcade. a full fitness center with net sports, court sports, rock climbing and bouldering.

    Food and Dining

the food offered is better and has a vastly larger variety than any sort of fast food that you can get delivered. dining is available for most hours of the day and within a comfortable walking distance.

    Dorm Life

housing can very temper-mental. try to get along with any roommates you may get.

    Academic Rigor

it really depends upon your major on how much the work load will be for you. speaking to students in different majors can help give you an idea of the level of rigor there will be. overall, it will be manageable; don't fret about it and let it stop you from following your goals though.

siue has one of the safest campuses in illinois. there are plenty of on duty officers around campus at all times and the dorm rules also ensure safety.

    What to do for fun

for fun, the fitness center has a lot of activities you can participate in and meet new people. you can hang out with friends, play sports with friends, work out, go swimming, rock climbing, bowling; just to name a few.

    Food and Dining

there are different varieties of food available but it could be better. after a while, you just want something different because you eventually get tired of the campus food. luckily, there are other restaurants to order from but are not walking distance, so the buses and/or delivery comes in handy if you don't have a car.

    Dorm Life

the dorms are really comfortable and safe. they're spacious and nothing like the usual college dorms that could be compared to a prison cell. there is around the clock staff to ensure safety at all times and friendly residence assistants.

    Academic Rigor

it's best to aim for a gpa of a 4.0 and don't fall under a 2.0. late work is unacceptable unless you have a good reason for it. unexcused absences also effects your grades so attend your classes everyday.

    Tips for prospective students

siue is a great school for students of all majors and brings you diversity in a safe environment. help is always provided if needed whether you would prefer help from a professor, another student, or a study group for any course. this is a challenging school but it is doable for anyone willing to accomplish their educational goals.

    Campus Safety

this campus is super safe. if anything fishy ever happens, students are notified right away via signs, text alerts, and emails. there is awesome front desk security in all of the halls, so you won't have to worry about strangers wandering about your home. if you go here, sign up for the e-lert system. the school will send you a text if school is canceled or if there's an emergency. the best e-lerts are for snow days!

    Greek Life

it's here, but there is currently no greek housing on campus. greek life is still pretty active, but there's not a huge power struggle between greeks and non-greeks.

    Clubs and Activities

there's a ton to do outside of class at siue, so i highly recommend you get involved. stop by kimmel leadership center when you visit campus (inside of morris university center) and ask for information about clubs and greek life. most performances and athletic events are free to students. just don't forget your student id!

Great for these types of students

students that want a smaller state school vibe, students interested in nursing, pre-med or pre-dental, students that don't want an overwhelming greek life on their campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

homecoming week and springfest are super fun times to be on campus! we do not have a football team, so the homecoming sport is soccer. there's a big rock in the middle of campus that students paint on a regular basis- it's fun to see what it changed to every few days.

    Bang for the buck

this is the cheapest state school in illinois. scholarships are a bit trickier to come by since it's a public school, but it's definitely a good value.

    What to do for fun

i myself am not big into the party scene, and i was worried that college would be like a crazy party scene from a movie. you can find that environment here, but there's not a huge pressure to be wild and crazy. there are plenty of fun things to do on campus on the weekends and in the surrounding area that don't involve drinking. also, take advantage of st louis while you're here! the city is wonderful and there are many free forms of entertainment!

    Food and Dining

dining services is wonderful! there is a good variety of food in the entree line, but you can get burgers and fries, stir fry, salad, or sandwiches too. we have a handful of fast-food choices as well that are all covered on your meal plan. i love the university restaurant upstairs in the morris university center! it's only open around lunchtime, but it makes for a nice break from the busy center court area.

    Dorm Life

the halls and cougar village are very safe! housing staff provides a lot of things to do outside of class as well, and there are trails, basketball courts, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, and a disc golf course to use nearby. i really like the suites in the first year halls. two people are in each room, and two rooms share a bathroom- no community showers! the halls are also co-ed, which i really appreciate.

    Academic Rigor

most of the general education classes i've taken have been a breeze. when you finally start taking major-specific courses, things start to get tougher, so don't slack off! there are plenty of on-campus resources in the student success center and specific departments if you need tutoring or if you need someone to proofread anything- utilize these!

    Tips for prospective students

if you are planning on coming here, i recommend you bring all of your bad weather gear! the weather in edwardsville can be a bit extreme at times (think very humid summers, stormy springs, and chilly winters). whether you'll be living on campus or commuting, you'll be doing a lot of walking to get to class, so keep that and the forecast on your mind when you get ready for the school day. summers on campus are very laid back, and the campus takes on a totally different vibe. i definitely recommend trying at least one summer session while you're here.

    In three sentences

siue is a place where you can get a great state school experience and education at an affordable cost. the campus is very scenic and detached from the city, which gives everything a more intimate feeling. there's always something to do on campus, in edwardsville, or half an hour away in st louis.

    Campus Safety

I have never felt threated on campus, ever, and I walk around very late at night to kill time.

    What to do for fun

Wander around the Engineering building, or any building really, and find new people to talk to. Or to sit with friends. Or alone, whatever floats your boat really.

    Food and Dining

MUC food. Sounds pretty gross just by the title, but there are good and bad days. There is a Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, and Starbuck's all in the university building, and all covered on the meal plans offered. The downfall is that the hours for all of the places are strange, and not many things are open past 8, especially in weekends.

    Dorm Life

Absolutely wonderful. I love living away from home, and being responsible for my own laundry, bathroom, and living space is something to look back on and be happy to know how to do so before getting out of college. The freshman dorms are nothing of greatness though; I have the most crooked room in my building, I assume. Noise problems can be quite obnoxious, but if they pass quiet hours, they can be resolved very quickly.

    Academic Rigor

Sometimes, I feel like the general education classes are way below the college level of learning I was expecting. That being said, I am also a pretty smart girl, and learn at a fast pace. So beware. Other than that, the courses in my major are proving to be somewhat helpful.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for as many scholarships as you possibly can before entering college. You will want to spend all of your time with friends then, even more so now than in high school. And if you're worried about being outcast for whatever reason, there will be at least three people you'll become friends with that were worried about the same thing.

    In three sentences

I think that SIUE is a great school, depending on what you're planning to study. Also, living on campus is a great experience, but expect to encounter some awkward situations with roommates, suitemates, and people you bump into at the early morning hours. And beware of goose season; you'll know what I mean.

There are many clubs and activities, ones for every types of students.

Great for these types of students

It is great for every type of student.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The beginning of every school year they have a foam party for everyone.

    Bang for the buck

Well personally all colleges are too expensive these days, but that is just a personal opinion. This a very good college so I would have to say you get what you pay for.

    What to do for fun

There are many things that you can do for fun on campus and many campus activities. They have free movies on Friday and etc.

    Food and Dining

Man, SIUE has a mass amount of eating places on campus. You have a sit down restaurant, pizza hut, taco bell, etc.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is good and very safe. You have 1 roommate and 4 people to 1 bathroom. There are 3 freshman dorms. My best advice for dorm life is make sure you make friends or it wont be that great of an experience.

    Academic Rigor

It depends on what classes you take. There are some classes that are easy blow off classes, but most of the class are normal academic rigor for college.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely apply here. Make sure you study the suggested amount. Make friends and get involved.

    In three sentences

This is a very good school. I really like the atmosphere and the professors. They have very good programs.

Cops patrol everywhere and are very big sticklers for speeding.

    What to do for fun

The University sports a pool and gym; both free for current students. There is a recreation room as well that contains a bowling alley and arcade.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria has so many options aside from the main school campus cafe. The University hosts a Starbucks, Auntie Anne's, Taco Bell, Chick Fillet, and much more.

    Dorm Life

I do not live on campus, however the ones I've been in are quite nice. They are located in a beautiful wooded area and cops patrol regularly making residents feel safe.

    Tips for prospective students

Sounds silly, but make ratemyprofessor.com your best friend. Prior to SIUE, I took that site for granted. To me, how the teacher presents a class is everything. A good teacher is the key to success, and with that website, you can't go wrong.

    In three sentences

To be honest, I'm not happy with my decision to attend SIUE. I've had terrible luck with teachers and advisors; I've gotten very little help from anyone when I needed it. I honestly can not wait to transfer out of SIUE.

    Campus Safety

There are safety towers located all around campus. By pressing the button you can call for help. Campus police are always around campus.

    Bang for the buck

SIU Edwardsville includes books in their tuition! No need to go out and buy your own books.

    What to do for fun

For fun there are always different activities scheduled. The greeks often have talent shows and after parties. The gym is awesome if you have fun working out. There are many classes daily that you can take including zumba, rock hard abs, yoga, boot camp, swim aerobics, etc. Many performers come to campus like comedians, singers, and dancers. There is always something different going on every week!

    Food and Dining

SIU Edwardsville has a few different dining options. There is the main cafeteria with different entrees everyday. They try to mix it up often and they occasionally add new meal items. They have a great selection of fruits, dessert, chips, beverages, and other snacks. They have The Wok where you can order your own stir fry and they cook it however you want. There is a Deli place where they also prepare sandwiches to your liking. Also in the main cafeteria is a grill where they cook breakfast in the morning (including the biggest omelets you can imagine) and hamburgers and chicken wraps during the day. They also have a few express restaurants including Chik fil A, Taco Bell, Starbucks, Freshens, and Pizza Hut. If you are looking for more of a restaurant and less of a cafeteria, there is a University Restaurant where you can dine by ordering off the menu or eating for the all you can eat buffet. Want to enjoy the outdoors while you eat? There is a grill out in the quad that barbecues daily. Skywalk cafe is also an express eating area located close to classes.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at SIU Edwardsville are much nicer than many other campuses. They are also fairly new. While room sizes vary, on average they are quite large. The resident halls are always scheduling fun activities to participate in to win prizes, compete, or just take a break from studying.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are not super hard, but it is not like high school. Many teachers expect you to read the book. Many questions on tests are not from lectures or powerpoint. They are from the book. Also, unlike teachers in high school, they are much more subtle about the information that will be on the test. While in high school teachers will say This will be on the test, hint, hint.., much less college professors do this. As long as you listen in class and read the given materials, most classes will be easy.

    Tips for prospective students

Biggest tip for prospective students- STAY AWAY FROM THE GEESE! There are geese all around campus. They can get pretty rowdy when provoked, especially around spring when they lay their eggs. They are very protective of their babies.

    In three sentences

SIU Edwardsville is a great place for people looking for the next step after high school. While the school is not very large and you have the luxury of seeing familiar faces on a daily basis, there is a wide diversity of people. Don't let the school's size discourage you-we have great school spirit!

    Campus Safety

SIUE sends out frequent email alerts concerning safety on campus. There are of course, some incidents, but campus police are constantly patrolling and always nearby.

    Greek Life

The Greek life is great at SIUE.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a great number of clubs and activities available on campus! Tons of philanthropic and volunteerism opportunities (the Student Organization for Sustainability), cultural clubs (Iranian Society, Muslim Society, Black Student Society), environmental and biology clubs (Wildlife Conservation Club, Pre-Veterinary Club), and much more.

Great for these types of students

Great for those students who really wish to focus on their college career and studies, but who also love to get involved in the community as well as have nice, interactive and wholesome fun. Although SIUE does have a great Greek life, there are not Sorority or Fraternity houses on campus. This, however, is beneficial because employers see that as a more positive thing. SIUE is great for pharmacy and education students as well.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

In the center of the SIUE Quadrangle is a rock which organizations spray-paint and use as advertising.

    Bang for the buck

SIUE provides wonderful academia as well as a fun campus, all for one of the lowest tuition costs in the state, and nation. Campus Activities Board (CAB) always has fun activities on the Quad and in the main hall. SIUE has an innovative senior assignment program which other schools are also incorporating into their undergraduate programs as well.

    What to do for fun

On campus SIUE provides bowling, an ice cream place, indoor and outdoor swimming, a ton of activities through their awesome fitness center (yoga, pilates, bellydancing), and a tennis court. Off campus, there are bars, Global Brew (international beers), and arcade style entertainment facilities. Not to mention, they are only 30 minutes from St. Louis, where there are tons more things to do! Such as the Zoo, Missouri Botanical Gardens, the Arch, and much more!

    Food and Dining

SIUE provides on campus food and dining. They have Chic-Fil-A, a classic burger and fry place, Asian food, Picc-a-Deli, as well as cafeteria-style food. In town, there are many great eateries, such as Wasabi (sushi) and 54th Street Bar and Grill.

    Dorm Life

I did not actually live on campus, but the dorms I did visit were clean and well maintained, and provided students with study centers, computers, and microwaves, etc. for snacking.

    Academic Rigor

Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville is very well known for their Pre-Pharmacy and Education programs. They have wonderful chemistry and engineering programs as well. In my chemistry class, our professor told us when we were taking our final that his classes always fared better than the national average on the standardized final. Also, for students who plan on transferring, a large portion of classes provided at SIUE are transferable and equivalent to those at other institutions.

    Tips for prospective students

One of the best decisions I ever made at SIUE was to become involved in the Student Leadership Development Program, which requires students to complete 60 hours of community service on and off campus, as well as attend 20 modules before graduation. These modules are offered twice a week, and are led by faculty and staff of SIUE, as well as prominent individuals in the community. They provide presentations regarding leadership, business etiquette, roles in volunteerism, and many more. It was the single most beneficial program I participated in, as it allowed me to become more involved, and provided networking opportunities as well as opportunities to win scholarly and volunteerism awards.

    In three sentences

SIUE has a beautiful, large campus full of trees, with a wonderful garden in which students can volunteer, and natural trails perfect for long walks and exercise. They are always improving the campus, and are currently building a brand new, environmentally friendly Science facility. Two of the best things about SIUE are their commitment to environmental sustainability (they have an Environmental Science Minor and upcoming Major as well as a Student Organization for Sustainability) and volunteerism.

    Campus Safety

Great campus safety. The police are always nearby and the campus is well lit at night.

    Greek Life

The greek life is small. No houses or anything.

    Clubs and Activities

I'm part of a group called Cru which is a super fun group to be apart.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    Not that I know of.

    Bang for the buck

The school is reasonably priced better than most schools in Illinois.

    What to do for fun

I normally stayed at the dorms with friends. I also would go into St. Louis since campus is about 20 minutes away.

    Food and Dining

The food court has many options for dining. I never had a hard time finding something to eat.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are clean and relatively new. I had no problems.

    Academic Rigor

The professors are very helpful in giving information.

    Tips for prospective students

Always stay on top of your academic progress. The adivsors might miss something that you actually need in order to graduate.

    In three sentences

Great school and beautiful campus. Teachers are very helpful and also friendly. Even though the school has over 15,000 students, classes are still small and interactive.

    Campus Safety

Deers and Geese are something to get use to.. but overall SIUe is a very safe campus. We have a police station right on campus; and police are always on patrol!

    Greek Life

    Rewarding

    Clubs and Activities

I don't know about any of the clubs and activities, but from what I've heard from other students clubs are rewarding.

Great for these types of students

Any type of student, SIUe is very diverse. Ex. Families, Religion etc.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is one of the lowest in Illinois, and you get a degree that counts what more can you ask for!

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of extracurricular activities to join; the campus also have various events planned throughout the school year.

    Food and Dining

Food is great here on campus, we have Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and of course the main cafeteria.

    Dorm Life

Freshman dorms are conveniently close to campus; but if you need to go farther than walking distance Cougar Shuttle is available. Once an upper classman dorm life becomes a lot more independent, individuals would live in an apartment style setting.

    Academic Rigor

Rating a three because general education is not so bad, but when you reach your major that is when I would rate it about a 4.5.

    Tips for prospective students

Look into internships starting your junior year, no matter if your major requires it or not. Don't slack off, school important no matter where you go.

    In three sentences

This University is currently the cheapest in Illinois, so makes it helpful for those who can't afford an expensive college. This University has many degrees/programs to choose from. Lastly what I have witness to be helpful to many of my friends, SIUe offers Family housing.

    Campus Safety

Rated as one of the safest schools in the US; there are patrolling police officers around the area all day everyday. They have emergency calls booths visible from every point on campus. And the students seem pretty calm/non-confrontational.

    Greek Life

Tons of options, nothing I've gotten into.

    Bang for the buck

This is your best option in the Southern Illinois area if you can't afford Chicago/Urbana.

    What to do for fun

They have a bowling ally on campus, rock climb walls in the gym, and a constant stream of live performers in the main buildings. You will see student activities in the main building (dances/exhibits/plays/etc.) as well as a few events hosted by the school. There is always something to do between classes.

    Food and Dining

They have a large buffet style food court with taco bell, pizza hut, and Churches chicken built in. Unfortunately, as a vegetarian, my options are extremely limited. They are not very accommodating to vegans/vegetarian diets even though their website/brochures do list some meat alternatives (they never have any in stock). They do have a Starbucks and a Kaldi's coffee shop though, so I'll add 2 more stars just for that.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms but some of my friends do. I hear the basic complaints of noise here and there, but overall it seems like a decent option. Reasonably priced and it is fairly clean.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are fairly easy, the Gen Ed courses are lacking on many fronts as they typically require little to no effort.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus during peak traffic/class times (11-1pm), the place is pretty busy, lots of student activities going on and they often play (blast at a ridiculous volume level) music in the court yard as well - seems to be mostly rap unfortunately.

    In three sentences

Weak academics - all classes have been a breeze thus far. Strong teachers mixed in a pool of mediocre baby-sitters (you will need to research your professors or else you risk wasting your time). SIUE has tons of little activities going on all the time, so if you are one of those involved students, you will have plenty to do.

    Campus Safety

Campus police are always patrolling campus and around campus, assuring safety to others. They also respond very quickly to emergencies, in which those rarely happen. Edwardsville is such a peaceful town.

    Greek Life

All greeks are on campus! Their events are fun and affordable!

    Clubs and Activities

There are Bars and Restaurants known to have great prices and tons of events for low prices such as Big Daddy's (Bar) in downtown Edwardsville, Shenanigans (bar&grill) less than 2mins from campus and the Boulevard (restaurant) in Edwardsville as well.

    Bang for the buck

Best tuition prices ever and your getting great opportunities and knowledge that any other school will get and more, beside the high tuition prices

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of on campus activities to attend that everyone will enjoy. There are also Greeks on campus, that throw parties, barbecues, bowling events and etc. Also our campus is about 25mins away from St.Louis Nightlife, whether your 21 and up or under, your guaranteed to have fun!

    Food and Dining

The food is good and thanks to a broad variety of food, you will never get bored. Meals plans are a big deal. Its a 60/40 plan, so mainly everything you buy is discounted, which is a great way to save throughout the semester! Also there are restaurants to choose from such as Chic-fil-a, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

    Dorm Life

Fun! Fun! Fun! There is nothing more memorable than dormlife. My first time experince living in the dorms couldn't have been any better. All of the Dorms are Co-ed and some are also set up, where you live with those majoring in the same thing as you. A great way to communicate with others, when you need help in classes

    Academic Rigor

Professors here really care about their coursework and willing to help with almost everything.

    Tips for prospective students

Great school, with lots of things to do when you want to free your mind from studying.

    In three sentences

This school is great! Not only is the cost of attendance low, but the teachers. students and staff are amazing. There is great success within SIUe and out! I Love It and its my third year here. Wouldn't transfer for anything. The area is beautiful, peaceful and pleasant as well. Lots of fun!

Some things me and my friends do is: ice-skating, bowling, ping-pong, or even movie night once in awhile. You just gotta know how to make your own fun.

    Campus Safety

The campus is located 20 minutes away from one of the most dangerous cities in America, East St. Louis. That being said, I know for a fact that we our one of the safest places to attend school.

    Greek Life

I am currently in a fraternity, Alpha Kappa Lambda. The Greek life here is small, but it is something that I would encourage everyone single person that comes to this school to check it out and see if it is for them or not.

    Clubs and Activities

They have almost every club you can imagine along with the activities that go along with them. The most outrageous club I can think of is our skydiving club, which I am a part of.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for the type of student that is looking to further better themselves in the long run. I know that it has changed me into the type of man that I had always hoped I would become.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Our campus is the second largest in the nation land wise. Giving us the chance to watch wildlife and be secluded from the hustle and bustle of the St. Louis area.

    Bang for the buck

    What to do for fun

Everything and anything. There is so much to do on this campus such as frisbee golf, rock climbing, basketball, any sport you can imagine against other students your age, swimming, and my favorite, canoeing.

    Food and Dining

I have visited other schools before and I must admit that SIUe has the best food out of all of them. You get quite the choices on where to eat and what to eat.

    Dorm Life

The dorms is where I met my best friends. I am almost done with school and these people are the ones that I go to with all of my problems and needs. The best dorms I could have asked for.

    Academic Rigor

The classes here are challenging but in a good way. Business classes are small enough to where you can actually get to know your professors along with making relationships with them in the academic manor.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to go out and meet new people because you never know who you are going to meet. These people will be the ones that help you along your journey to the other side of adult hood.

    In three sentences

On a scale from 1-10, I would rate SIUe a 10. I love my school and would not have it any other way. This school has made me who I am today.

This school is great for students that enjoy an outdoorsy campus. There are many miles of trails to explore and the buildings are built in a way to accommodate nature.

    Bang for the buck

SIUe being one of the cheaper schools in the state of Illinois, I would definitely say that it is worth the money. A student receives good education, many new experiences, and grows as a person at college. It is a good deal.

    What to do for fun

There are many school sponsored activities and groups students can get involved with. Besides that forming a solid group of friends is always a good thing so you can spend time with them as well. St. Louis is also just a quick 25 minute drive away!

    Food and Dining

As a health education major my opinion on the food choices at SIUe are biased and picky. But from an objective standpoint the cafeteria offers a good variety of food for students to enjoy. There are several different vendors to choose from as well.

    Dorm Life

The freshman dorms on campus are wonderful, and they are kept in very excellent shape. There are desk managers in each dorm that make sure the safety of the students is a priority. I have not yet lived in the upper class apartments but I have heard good things.

    Academic Rigor

The difficulty of classes is dependent on several factors including major of choice, teacher instructing the class, and how hard a student is willing to work. This is because some areas can have more requirements than others. As long as a person goes into a class setting with determination and a positive attitude, anything can be achieved.

    Campus Safety

I definitely feel safe on this campus. There are times where I go home on a school night for a little and come back late at night and I don't have to worry about a thing. I am glad they have emergency buttons all over campus as well.

    Bang for the buck

I do agree that there is a lot of fun stuff here and I am really enjoying all my classes so far. Even though I only live about 40 minutes away in Saint Charles I had to pay the out of state tuition, which kind of isn't good for me. But I am really happy with my choice because this was my favorite campus by far that I visited before my decision.

    What to do for fun

I love how their is usually always something fun going on in the quad every week. Im really excited to attend the paint glow party next week that is going to be so much fun. I also love how their is a place to go bowling and play pool. Another college I had in consideration didn't have that many choices on how to have fun and good time.

    Food and Dining

I really love the food here. Chick Fil A is definitely my favorite. And I am now addicted to Starbucks. I am disappointed Taco Bell is no longer here though. I really love how their is music videos always playing on the tvs too, it makes the atomosphere fun and enjoyable.

    Dorm Life

The dorm live is exactly want I was expecting. It was how I met a lot of my friends I know have. Everyone is super friendly in my dorm and keeps their doors open and everyone is very outgoing. I love how there is quiet study rooms at each wing and always a microwave we can use if we need to.

    Academic Rigor

I feel as all my instructors really take their jobs seriously and they want us to learn and be successful and they do a great job at assigning homework that we will need to be successful in their class.

    Tips for prospective students

I would advise prospective students to try to come up with a plan of what they will probably want their degree to be. That way they are put in courses that will benefit them with their major they want. I know a lot of students may not know what they want their major to be but I feel like it will benefit them if they have a rough idea before their second semester of freshman year. That way they are getting their moneys worth for school, as we all know is usually not very cheap.

    In three sentences

Siu Edwardsville is the perfect college to me because I love the campus set up. I really like how everyone who works and attends here is friendly. Most of all I love how the school offers what degree and program I want while not being really far away from home.

    Campus Safety

I have never once felt unsafe on campus. SIUE is located in the town of Edwardsville, which is also an extremely safe town of around 25,000 people. I have never heard of any safety issues in my time as SIUE.

    Greek Life

The greek life might be small, but they recently added 2 fraternities in the last year and are about to add a sorority in the next year. Going greek is an amazing way to meet some great friends with also being held to a higher standard for grades.

    Clubs and Activities

No matter what your interest is, there a club for that. If there isn't, it is incredibly easy to start a new club.

Great for these types of students

SIUE is the perfect size. At about 15,000 students, there is enough people to always feel like you can meet new people, but still meet great friends. If anyone is interested in sustainability, I would highly suggest SIUE for them.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a huge rock in the middle of the quad that gets spray painted at least once a day. People will have wars on the rock to see who can keep there message up the longest.

    Bang for the buck

SIUE has an amazing price. When i came it was the least expensive state school in Illinois. Great education at an inexpensive price.

    What to do for fun

Campus Activities Board is always holding activities for students. Whether it be going to a Cardinals game, a concert on campus, or even a comedian coming to campus (Demetri Martin came to campus 2 years ago and Bob Sagett came last year). There is always something fun going on throughout the weekends as well.

    Food and Dining

SIUE has many options for food. There is a Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Chic-Fil-A, Auntie-Anne's, and Starbucks. Outside of the chain restaurants there is an awesome sandwich place that is much better than subway. Also, two places that are similar to McDonald's type food, a Chinese place, an awesome salad bar, and also a homemade food section. Great variety for all.

    Dorm Life

Dorms and very new and nicer than most other colleges. On the other hand, dorm life at SIUE is not as crazy as some of the top party schools.

    Academic Rigor

Some programs are better than others, but SIUE is known for an amazing nursing program. The elementary education, engineering, business, mass communication, and geography programs are also excellent fields.

    Tips for prospective students

The greek life at SIUE is a great and easy way to get involved on campus as well as being able to put something great on a resume.

    In three sentences

SIU Edwardsville is a great school with many wonderful opportunities. The campus is massive and mostly undeveloped so the school has much to add on. In the past 3 years SIUE has built several new buildings as well as built on to many other buildings.

If you live in the residence halls walk around and meet people, then you will have something to do.

    Food and Dining

There weren't that many healthy food options there when I was a freshman (4 years ago) but now they are starting to give healthier food options and the food tastes good too.

    Dorm Life

The residential halls are relatively new. The only thing I didn't like about them was the bed size because I'm used to a bigger bed, but other than that it was a great experience

    Greek Life

I do not have any knowledge of Greek Life but I am interested in looking into this.

    Clubs and Activities

I have learned as I have gone through my high school career the importance and value of clubs and activities. Since I have learning disabilities, it was a struggle early in high school for me. However, after the first year, I seem to acclimate myself and brought my grades up which I needed to concentrate on my acedemics. Now that I am successful with my grades and involved in school clubs and activities, I am so glad that I do not have to look back and wonder.

    What to do for fun

Student life at SIU Edwardsville has a rather lengthy list. There's a lot happening on campus for students, especially for the resident hall students.

    Food and Dining

The food options are located in one building on campus, which is inconvenient considering the student foot-traffic. The selection is comparable to a high school cafeteria. There are a few name brand vendors but not many.

    Dorm Life

I opted to stay at home and commute. I can't relate. My younger brother is a freshman and he loves it. He hardly ever comes home.

    Academic Rigor

The courses here require moderate study time. Most professors like to assign projects. Few professors I've had assign papers and the ones that do so far have assigned small papers.

    Tips for prospective students

Have your financial aid package ready well in-advance before registration so you can register on-time. Seats are limited and even then your class may only be offered once if at all. Meet with your academic advisors early and often to be sure you are taking courses that will count towards your degree.

    Campus Safety

The campus is actually very safe. There are lights everywhere you go at night and very little activity going on at night. There are also police emergency poles everywhere you go on paths and in every parking lot.

    Greek Life

I am apart of Greek Life myself! There are about 30 different fraternities and sororities on campus. I am apart of Delta Lambda Phi, which is currently the only Greek organization on campus specific to gay, bisexual, transgender and progressively straight men and the positive alliance and change they can make towards their community.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many many opportunities to join a group at this school. There are organizations including a community service group, social groups for minorities, a gaming, dancing group, and even a modeling group with so many more here.

    What to do for fun

There is a number of things to do on campus! Most of these are daily activities during school which may include live concerts, fairs, Greek Week, and many more. Others include on-campus activities such as bowling, ping pong, a beautiful garden and arboretum to walk through, many huge art pieces to enjoy and a commons area which ALWAYS has something going on.

    Food and Dining

The food that is offered on campus is a high variety and good quality. There are choices from Asian and Italian to Pizza Hut and Mexican. Although, I will say, for commuters, the food is highly priced so that definitely turns me away from eating on campus.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived on campus so I'm not too sure but I have visited in them a lot. The dorms are very nice, many are new or newly renovated. Plus, they're very close to classes so it makes for a quick trip to and from classes.

    Academic Rigor

The campus offers a number of levels of academic classes. Some of the classes I have taken may only really require an hour or two outside of class to get a good grade. Others may keep me up there an extra two hours up on campus almost every day to help me succeed and many times studying with friends. I can see these classes helping me to excel in my studies later on!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to explore the campus! There is so much to do on this campus and so many places that might peak your interests. Also, never be afraid to make friends or ask anyone there questions you may have. People here are very friendly.

I am a bio/pre-med major, so sciences are a lot of work to keep up, but the teachers are intelligent and explain topics well.

    Campus Safety

There has never been a time that I have felt unsafe to be walking by myself after dark on campus. I would just say be sensible. If there isn't a lot of people around and not much light - call the police and they will escort you.

    Greek Life

There are only a few Greek lifes that you can join as a freshmen, so if you really want to join but aren't sure - wait! Also, SIUE doesn't have Greek housing so you would still be in the dorms (if that matters to you).

    Clubs and Activities

There are more clubs and activities than I can count. What is even better, if there's a club you want to join but SIUE doesn't already have it - you can make and start it!

Great for these types of students

If you want some independence, but aren't crazy about moving into a town, SIUE is the best for you. You are about 20-30 minutes from St. Louis so you can still do all the fun, city stuff, but you don't have to live amongst it!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a group of yoga rocks outside the VC, so when its nice outside people do yoga out there. Also there is a building that has the constellations on it and its lit up at night.

    Bang for the buck

People think that scholarships aren't going to amount to anything when looking at the overall cost of college, but they do. Scholarships are huge, especially if you aren't receiving anything from the school itself.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of groups you can join - CAB (Campus Activities Board) is a good one to join. If Greek life is your thing, there are lots of options as well. In the VC there is rock climbing, swimming, basketball courts, and lots of other fun stuff to do.

    Food and Dining

I feel like SIUE has some amazing dining options. Not saying they don't get old, but they are good. We have a Chick-fil-a, Pizza Hut, MiCocina, Starbucks, Auntie Annes, and more. These are very convenient and quick grabs so you will find yourself going to them often.

    Dorm Life

I would recommend finding a roommate thru roomsync on Facebook. Otherwise you may get stuck with someone you don't like. Also, if your used to sleeping without any noise, bring ear plugs! By no means is it quiet, its not overly loud all the time though. I would also recommend starting the year off right and setting some rules for cleaning the room and bathroom and what you expect of the cleaning. If there are any troubles with the two rooms and cleaning the bathroom, go to your RA first. But, with my luck, you're better off talking it out yourself.

    Academic Rigor

I feel like SIUE professors expect a lot out of their students. They lay a lot of the responsibility on the student.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't over anticipate how much you can walk to be at class at 8am! Steer clear of Starbucks - you will get very addicted, very quickly. Just because you do a lot of walking doesn't mean you should eat whatever you want. Get involved! Bring lots of wall decor. Be responsible, go to classes if you sign up for them!

    In three sentences

I would rate SIUE right at a 4 out of 5. The food is good, walking distance can be quite long at times, and the dorms are bigger than a usual dorm (also your own bathroom). SIUE has its own gardens which is really pretty in the fall and spring!

SIUE sends out text alerts and emails when we should have our ears and eyes in case of emergencies and concerns. There's emergency posts and a policeman is always riding around to make sure that everything is line.

    Clubs and Activities

They're is something for everyone and if we don't have a certain club you can make your own club.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The one unusual thing about SIUE is the geese. There are geese everywhere and they can be intimidating but they usually don't bother the students. We also have a bike trail that goes through the campus

    Bang for the buck

The University Bookstore can be high, so if students want SIUE attire I suggest going to the local Wal Mart. And when it comes to food, the student should get the combo meal because you get your money's worth.

    What to do for fun

Late Night Bingo, Friday Free Flick, and everything that SIUE has planned. The events are so much fun and you'll regret not going to them, the best part is that some events are opened to the public, which means that I can bring my family and friends who don't attend SIUE.

    Food and Dining

SIUE has a wide variety of food from your traditional hamburger to Mexican cuisine. SIUE hosts special events such as Taste Around the World where students can enjoy different food from other students culture.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms. I commute to and from school but I don't hear complains about the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

SIUE is here to help us and they are very understanding. They have a wide variety of majors and programs.

    Tips for prospective students

    Watch out for goose poop.

    In three sentences

SIUE is my home away from home. I feel very comfortable and confident walking around campus. The students and staff are very open minded and they really do want the students to succeed.

The bowling alley is always fun!. Come here for an awesome night for cosmic bowling. This is when the strobe lights, black lights, and anything else that makes the room feel alive with good music and cool strikes on the lane.

    Food and Dining

The down stairs cafeteria is full of restaurants for students. There are even coffee shops for students to get that boost of energy they need in the morning.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms, but I know a lot of people who do. And from what I have heard, it is awesome!

    Academic Rigor

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

The safety here on campus is phenomenal. Every once in a while there are issues on campus, but they are quickly and swiftly handled by the campus police force. This school also has a great set-up for the emergency stations where no matter where you are on campus you can almost always see an emergency station.

    Greek Life

The presence of Greek life here on campus is known, however, the absence of Greek housing on campus really takes away from it. At this time there are six Fraternities and soon to be four Sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

For those who are interested in playing club sports or intramural sports there are a plethora of options. There are also many different major specific clubs that are offered here on campus.

Great for these types of students

This is a school that really caters to most every type of student. However, if the student is someone who is extremely focused on academics, or someone who is very interested in Greek life this may be a second option. There are only a handful of places to get away from all of the noise here on campus and the Greek life does not have housing here on campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are many different philanthropy events that are put on yearly by the Greek life here on campus. From guys walking a mile in heels, to a nearly naked mile, there are many different things here on campus that you cannot find anywhere else.

    Bang for the buck

Being the cheapest school that I looked at this school has surpassed all expectations that I had. The school is a great place for students to attend when finances are tight.

    What to do for fun

Here at SIUE there are many things to do for fun no matter what the student considers to be an exhilarating experience. Being a new Division One school in all sports, going to the on campus gym, visiting the bowling alley, and also the greek life are all options for places to go to enjoy a good time. For those who enjoy relaxing there is a beautiful trail and also many places where people can just sit and relax.

    Food and Dining

The food here is definitely a step up from what I personally was served in high school. Comparing this school to other schools dining I believe that the food that is served will top any other institution that has low prices like SIUE does. The food may not be perfect everyday, but there are multiple options everyday.

    Dorm Life

Being a freshman in Bluff Hall 2 North this year I can say that I have overall enjoyed my stay here. The only issue with being in the dorm is that there are some individuals who are disrespectful when it comes to being quiet late at night. I personally have been woken up countless times, but I really did not expect much else when I am living in a dorm here at SIUE.

    Academic Rigor

Really depends upon the major of the student. Personally, being that I started as a Mechanical Engineer student and then switched to Computer Science because the rigor of the Engineering program is very high. The difficulty for the nursing program, being that it is competitive acceptance, is very high and should only be pursued by those who are confident their desire to be a nurse.

    Tips for prospective students

This is a good university to come to without a major in mind. The school does an amazing job of giving the student breadth in their first year when no major has been decided. Even if a student comes into the university with a major in mind SIUE still gives the student a chance to experience other majors that are related to their intended major.

    In three sentences

Good overall university that truly cares about the student and wants them to succeed. However, can run into problems with Freshman level classes that are taught by professors who expect the students to be experts. The college overall is a great college to attend when money is tight and has room for improvement while still be a top-notch school

    Campus Safety

The safety on campus is excellent! The police department has a very open policy of reporting crimes on campus. Every campus will have crime. The incidents at SIU-E, however, certainly don't seem to reflect the age group as generally portrayed. Speeding tickets, strange odors (drugs), traffic accidents and minor thefts are what are generally in the police blotter. If you visit another campus and they claim these things don't occur, it is simply not true. Considering the size and age of the student body, campus crime is extremely small.

    Greek Life

Plentiful, but I'm not a member of a Greek organization so I cannot comment on this.

    Clubs and Activities

There are plenty of clubs and activities for you to participate in. If you can't find a club or group to develop and further your interest in a particular subject, you simply haven't looked around or asked anyone! There is something at SIU-E for everyone!

Great for these types of students

Exchange students and non-traditional students. Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville offers a very welcoming atmosphere. I attended one other college and visited a second and they weren't as friendly as I had hoped. My first semester was a welcoming experience for me. My classmates -from all over the country and world- seemed as intimidated as I was by the new atmosphere, but that quickly passed.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I'm not at liberty to discuss these types of things. Ask about them during your tour. Sorry!

    Bang for the buck

Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville is a great deal for those wanting an outstanding education at a decent price.

    What to do for fun

Attend sporting events. There are also many outdoor events, weather permitting. A lot of the outdoor events aren't as blatantly advertised as they could be. Make sure you look around for events. Ask your classmates as well!

    Food and Dining

The variety of food available is decent and the quality is excellent. There are some of the usual fast-food restaurants and/or chains available, but even the school-prepared food is really good!

    Academic Rigor

It's not the easiest school to graduate from, although this depends on your major. Several competitive schools (i.e. nursing, business, and engineering) have necessarily higher academic standards for admittance. There is plenty of time to gain the GPA needed for entrance to these programs (if that is what you choose) although a plethora of other majors exist that aren't as academically rigorous. Some majors are simply more focused on the left brain and some are focused on the right brain.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for financial aid early if needed. Participate in university activities and organizations. Make liberal use of the on-campus tutors (free). Non-traditional students (i.e. older) will be very comfortable at this school.

    In three sentences

The students are considerate of others. Not an overwhelming party atmosphere. Very accessible by public transportation and, for those living on campus, bike.

We have a Starbucks, Auntie Anne's, Pizza Hut, Mi Cocina and the University Restaurant better known as Fixin's. There is also a place to get burgers, sandwiches/paninies, chinese food andhomemade food. My biggest issue with the dining hall is the fact that they close so early. The only place that stays open late is Pizza Hut and you get tired of that very quickly.

    Dorm Life

The only university housing I have ever lived in was Cougar Village and the apartment was very depressing. The floor tile was forever dingy and my room did not come with a ceiling light. I had a light switch but no light. The bath tub of the apartment just would not come clean. My mother and god mother helped me clean the apartment when I first moved in and it as still not up to satisfactory. However, the Commons has food so commuting to the MUC was not always necessary.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the professor, the work load won't be too difficult. Some instructors mainly focus on the work in class, which makes attendance a huge part of your grade.

    Tips for prospective students

If you will be living in Cougar Village, the shuttle buses in the morning tend to be crowded. Allow yourself 30 minutes to travel and get to class. The bus will past you if they are too crowded. Call the Morris University Center, the MUC (pronounced as Muck).

This school is a great one for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. You don't have to be an outdoorsy type of person to attend here though, everyone I have met enjoys it here no matter what.

    Bang for the buck

For the low amount of money I am paying to attend SIUE I am extremely satisfied! Such a cheap school but one really does get the college experience and a great one at that!

    Food and Dining

I have never heard a single complaint about the food. Awesome food choices at just about all times.

    Dorm Life

I couldn't be happier with the dorms here at SIUE. Very spacey rooms if you and your roommate choose to do a little redecorating. It's also a plus that you don't have to share a bathroom with a bunch of strangers and instead only share a bathroom with your roommate and the two people who live next to you (your suitemates). The only downside is the fact that there is only one microwave per wing (about 32 people!) and you aren't allowed to have any kitchen-like appliances in your dorm besides a coffeemaker and a minifridge.

    Academic Rigor

Many people look over this school because of how easy it is to get into but I think that is just because it's a newer school because it definitely isn't because of how easy the coursework is! Professors challenge you but are very helpful in most cases so don't be threatened by the coursework.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't look this school over! Great school with so many opportunities in the area for internships and jobs in any field. Make sure you bring appropriate shoes for all the walking you'll be doing, though. Campus is very large but all the buildings are condensed so walking from class to class isn't bad, but walking from the freshman dorms to class was a bit of a walk.

    In three sentences

Beautiful, large campus with tons of clubs and activities for just about anyone. Since it is a newer school the buildings are not outdated like many other colleges. Great atmosphere, wherever you are on campus.

    Campus Safety

    I feel extremely safe here.

    Greek Life

I recommend rushing and joining some type of greek life unless you have money to go to ST.Louis greek is the best nightlife choice.

    Food and Dining

Its okay but the food gets boring fast

    Dorm Life

Very safe and there is always something new to do and someone to meet

    Academic Rigor

You have to do your homework and study if you expect to pass.

    Tips for prospective students

At the beginning of the fall semester its great! So many clubs are out and about some greek parties, different events and activities. There is not much to do outside of campus unless you go to St. Louis. Everyone is super friendly and its easy to meet new people everyday. This university is big enough to always meet someone new; however, that being said, the campus is small enough to recognize a lot of faces around you. Once rush is over and the greeks have the members they want all the parties are mixers (just for greeks) or extremely hush hush. Cougar lanes is the bowling ally on campus and is a lot of fun to go to with friends. There is also a mini arcade with a couple of games and ping pong and pool tables. The fitness center is pretty big and offers a lot of different things to students such as free fitness assessments or personal training at low rates. The campus is absolutely beautiful and there are plenty of trails to go running on. Soccer is the big sport here because we don't have a football team. (The reason for not having a football team is because it keeps our tuition rates lower.) We do have a club football team for those of you that would still like to play. The professors are very nice helpful and actually want to see us succeed. It is easy to get one on one time with a professor or just talk to them at starbucks. Housing is very safe people have to check in and visitors have to leave their ID's at the desk. The work is hard you have to study and do your homework if you expect to pass this is a university. But all in all this is a great school to be go SIUE!!!
