    Tips for prospective students

SVSU is a great university. I came from a small town and didn't have any trouble adjusting to college life. The class sizes are small, the professors work with you and help you understand the material, the campus is always growing, and not to mention, the housing is fantastic! Some of the best in Michigan! SVSU also offers many scholarships to students and financial aid as well. Overall, it is great to be a cardinal!!

    Tips for prospective students

Tour the campus. See what they have to offer. Look at the population and cost of living and see how the living situation is. Then look at the programs, and accreditations.

    Bang for the buck

You get what you're paying for. The food is great. The living condition is outstanding. You have your own kitchen, equipped with a stove, microwave refrigerator, and sink! Take some time out the day to go chill in the game room, which is free to students.

    Am enjoying being here

It has a nice size population, the college is resting in a decent area. They have a bus system that will take you off campus if you don't drive. And there are friendly students as well as faculty. I have no problem with anyone.

    Am learning a lot

Saginaw Valley State University is a great school. The classes have the right amount of students in them. You are able to learn what you need to learn and the professors will work with you. So when choosing Saginaw Valley State University, i think you will make the right decision.

Great for these types of students

Saginaw Valley State University is great for high school students who come from small communities and for students who have disabilities.

    Tips for prospective students

Students need to look at different universities first before they make a final decision. A medium size university might seem great at first but the idea can change. Tour campuses first before making a final decision on which university a student wants to attend. If a prospective student knows what career they want to get into then search for a college that offers the career. Universities have higher expectations and standards for students to work hard, expect to lose sleep, have to be in control and independent of their schedule, always carry a planner around, and join at least one group on campus but not more than two. Always keep in mind that school comes first and extracurricular activities come second.

    Bang for the buck

Saginaw Valley State University is one of the cheapest Universities in the state of Michigan. Tuition covers tutoring, printer balance, fitness facility, the classes that a student is taking, sport events, and other costs. Saginaw offers meal plans to make sure that students do not starve and have multiple food places on campus. Just out of warning, some of the food places on campus are more expensive than Meijer’s and Walmart. Saginaw offers apartment style housing providing a microwave, oven, stove, refrigerator and freezer, bathroom, kitchen table and chairs, couch, T.V stand, beds, desks, closets, and small dressers. Saginaw stretches the dollar bill compare to other Universities.

    Am enjoying being here

Saginaw Valley State University has a lot to offer. This university offers over 250 registered organizations on campus, there is at least 1 program going on every month that students can participate in, sports events are free for students, everyone is friendly on campus and supportive, everything on campus is walking distance, and the housing on campus is one of the best in the state of Michigan.

    Am learning a lot

Universities have high expectations for students and Saginaw Valley State University is not an exception. The classrooms hold a maximum of 25 students and lecture halls hold a maximum of 60 students. With small class sizes, the professors are able to give one on one attention to students. The professors at Saginaw have a passion for what they do and are willing to help you during their office hours. The professors will get to know you by the end of the semester. There is tutoring offered on campus for just about every subject and it is free for students. With this type of attention offered at this university, a student learns a lot in the class. A student grows outside the classroom and learns to become more independent.

Great for these types of students

Those looking for a lower-priced college. Those looking for better housing accommodations. Those looking to be a person to a professor, not a number. Those looking for a friendly atmosphere. Those looking to be a Cardinal.

    Tips for prospective students

Use your resources. If you're struggling or worried about struggling, there are lots of FREE resources such as the Writing Center for help with papers, the Center for Academic Achievement for tutoring in subjects, and so much more! Get involved. It's hard to get the motivation to do it, and can seem pretty scary to do it. But it's a great way to network and develop friendships that will last throughout your college experience. (And it could look good on a resume, too!) Involvement has been my favorite part of the academic experience.

    Bang for the buck

The most inexpensive public university in the state of Michigan! Residential facilities are definitely above and beyond what other universities provide for their students. Although, tuition rates are on a constant rise everywhere now-a-days, if anyone could put a price on the college experience, SVSU has the best value.

    Am enjoying being here

First going in I figured a college with 10,000 was huge, but it's really not all that bad. It's the perfect amount of people to where you can network with new people anytime you please. There's lots of organizations of every type of imaginable, and I highly recommend getting involved with at least one of them.

    Academic Rigor

I've had good academics all throughout high school, so I didn't know what to expect at a college level. Although I had to put in more effort and cut back precious sleep to get in some extra study time something I didn't have to do in high school I managed to take a lot from my classes and apply it to real life. I find myself using what I've learned in most classes in real life on a day to day basis. The presentations and papers can be tough at times, but with resources like the Writing Center, you shouldn't have to worry!

Great for these types of students

Students who want to go away to college but do not want to attend a large university and students who want to live in beautiful and large dorms!

    Tips for prospective students

The dorms are absolutely beautiful and the college is very diverse. One of my favorite things about SVSU was the people on campus are very friendly. Don't overload yourself in your first semester at college. Lastly, always make sure you check out your professors on ratemyprofessor!

    Bang for the buck

Saginaw Valley's cost for tuition was in the average range of most universities, although there books are quite expensive. My one semester at SVSU did cost me around $9,000.00.

    Did enjoy being here

I transferred back home after the fall semester of 2009. I enjoyed going to my classes. Although, i am more of a home person and did not enjoy being away from home. Another added stress was my roommates and i did not get along very well.

    Did learn a lot

Saginaw Valley is a very small college which gives you the option for one on one time with your professors. I enjoyed all of my classes at SVSU and the professors were amazing and very helpful. The professors do a great job on easing you into your college experience. Academics are very good and if you plan on going away but don't want to attend a large university Saginaw Valley is a great choice.

Great for these types of students

It is great for students going into the medical field because of the new building that was just built. It is especially good for nursing because there are opportunities for nursing students. It is good for a student starting out because the class sizes are small and the campus is easy to navigate around on. It is good for business majors and education majors as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early and decide early. You will get more benefits if you decide to go there early. Also you can get a chance at campus scholarships if you make the decision fast. Also use the resources at school you can get 400 free prints and in college you need to print almost everything. The library is great, as well as the math and writing centers.

    Bang for the buck

There are many scholarship opportunities. It is cheaper then many other schools although living on campus is not cheap. There are perks such as free parking and free use of the fitness center.

    Am enjoying being here

I can live at home and still have a great college experience. For me Saginaw Valley is great because I can get my degree from there. I can be in clubs and extracurriculars and still focus on my school work.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently in 14 credits and I am signed up to take 15 credits in Winter 2010. I am learning a lot at Saginaw Valley. I am taking classes that are not similar so I am in classses I have never taken before. I have learned a lot about Political Science and Communications. I have improved my writing in my English class and there is the Writing Center which is a great resource.

Tour the campus and see if this is the college for you before you make a decision. Focus on your courses and please use all of your RESOURCES!

    Tips for prospective students

Saginaw Valley State University is a great university. SVSU has so much to offer. Theres a variety of things that you can get involved in and make yourself known. The campus is very well kept together and small enough for you to stay inside during the winter. The atmosphere of SVSU is very friendly. You can easily make friends and don't have to worry about going anywhere alone. The class sizes are just like high school with an average size of 30 students. If you aren't understanding the material feel free to contact your professor or even get a tutor. I will advise if you are having difficulty to get assistance immediately. Everything on campus is for you to use so take advantage of all the resources around you.

Get involved, go to events especially when free t-shirts are offered, take your time walking to places because you will always see someone you know, go to sports events, enjoy yourself.

    Bang for the buck

I am a presidential scholarship recipient, so the only fees I have to worry about are housing and my payments haven't been too bad so far.

    Am enjoying being here

I believe that SVSU is the best choice I made. I am having an amazing time here and couldn't imagine going to any other university. I am involved in about four extra curricular groups and living on campus really adds to the experience. I try to be as involved as I can, but still save time for homework.

Great for these types of students

SVSU is great for students who prefer small campuses in a more suburban/edge of rural setting. It is great for those who want to pay less for what many are paying more for. SVSU is known for its Education program as well as its growing Nursing program, so students interested in those fields should give SVSU a chance.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely take a tour of the campus before you apply, are accepted, or commit to going there. Some people don't like the fact that the campus is so small or that it is basically in the middle of fields. Don't let that fool you though, it is still really close to shopping and the highways. I would also recommend that if you do commit to SVSU, that you set an earlier orientation date if possible because that allows the maximum time to get prepared for the upcoming year.

    Bang for the buck

As many people have said, Saginaw Valley is the cheapest public university in the state. Therefore, students receive a university level education for less than other universities.

    Am enjoying being here

I love everything about this university! The campus is smaller, therefore it is difficult to get lost. The dorms are nicely set up and furnished. The walk from any dorm to the main buildings of campus is 10 minutes maximum. That being said, this smaller school doesn't have the small school feel meaning that not everyone knows everyone nor does every student know everything about others.

    Am learning a lot

Saginaw Valley professors have so much to teach you! They always make themselves available if you need help! Many have experience not only as professors, but in other areas of their fields therefore it shows students all the things their education can do for them.

As long as you are willing to do the work and attend classes this is a wonderful place to be. They have a lot of majors and minors and some graduate courses as well. So is doesn't matter what you're interested in. Also if you like smaller classes svsu is the perfect place to attend.

    Tips for prospective students

Try and get involved and get to know other people. Once you have your schedule make sure to explore svsu. It's almost always open except for some holidays so you can pretty much get into any building and find your classes.

I believe that school is very fake especially when it comes to them caring for the student, they show very mean and threatening tactics in concern about receiving your tuition, and room and board payments, They threaten with eviction and expulsion from school during finals or times when studies should be number one. They have no care but for collections of funds due. This plays very hard on me, while trying to study. Make sure you have all accounts current and paid, their will be no exceptions to their rules!!!!!!! I also had one bad experience while at the rec. center. My gym bag was gone through and I found that my iphone was missing. Through help of the campus police it was recovered and returned to me. Everything went fine except for the thief who lived on campus was still allowed to reenter the rec center and to use all the campus facilities. This made me very nervous and I was always looking over my back for some kind of possible retaliation. This did not seem fair, and their should be some kind of policy in place to protect the victim!

Great for these types of students

Honestly, I have heard that SVSU is great for education and nursing majors.

    Tips for prospective students

College, just like high school, is one of the best times of your life. However, the people and the relationships will either be broken or will grow stronger. Additionally, college isn't for everyone, but don't let the independence of college get in the way of the true goal of what you came here for and that is to eventually graduate.

    Bang for the buck

It is the cheapest school in Michigan and it also has the best housing. No other school in Michigan is going to give you a nice place.

    Am enjoying being here

Aside from the fact that SVSU really isn't in a college town, it is a cool little place. When you live on campus it allows you to get involved in things and it honestly is what you make of it.

    Am learning a lot

In all honestly, I hate giving my opinion on things because my experience is different from other people. However, I love the fact that the class sizes are small, so your prof has a better chance of getting to know you.

Great for these types of students

all types of students can fit in at this school, whether youre the outgoing active type or more quiet and chill. it's relatively quiet and calm around campus so theres always a great place to sit and think in your favorite spot. svsu offers lots of activities, clubs, and school functions so being on campus is never boring. everyone is amiable so making friends is easy!

    Tips for prospective students

take a tour of the campus to see if its right for you, talk with an academic advisor and the office of financial aid/scholarships to see if svsu is the school for you. talk with other students as well, meet with your major advisor(if you have one) to get help with your career path and which classes to take.

    Bang for the buck

great resources are available such as the library, tutoring centers, writing center, and academic help. dorms are some of the best, apartment style, relatively big too. several places to eat such as the main cafeteria(doan or rfoc), papa johns right next to the small convenient store, einsteins bagels, and a variety of healthy alternatives at the other food court. gym offers a lot of recreational activites and new workout equipment on both levels of floors. enjoy both outdoor and indoor activities.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is rather big and beautiful at all times. Always clean and everyone around campus is friendly which makes for a positive atmosphere. The library is 4 great floors high packed with all kinds of information as well as the student help writing center. Tutoring centers are also a plus for any class/major. Food is great also, real homecooked favorites can be found in the RFOC(Real Food On Campus).

    Academic Rigor

a lot of information is packed over a course of a semester but the professors make it interesting to learn and easy to follow along which is great to obtain the information. some teachers just expect you to show up to class, listen, and take notes, while others do more online work which is relatively more easy and convenient. always open to taking students questions and gives opportunities to get a better grade on assignments.

    Campus Safety

I lived on campus for 2 years and never had any problems there. I feel very safe at my school even though there have been a few incidents, but nothing serious.

    Greek Life

If you are looking for a school with frats and sororities, this is not the school. Although we have some greek life, because of the lower number of students overall, it is nothing like a large university.

    Clubs and Activities

The athletic training club is a very fun and active club with the trips we take to conventions and the such. There are so many different types of clubs and it is easy to create a club yourself! Intramurals sports are a huge hit at SVSU as well.

Great for these types of students

SVSU is great for those who are outgoing, fun, willing to learn, willing to gain clinical experience, and pushing themselves to succeed.

    Bang for the buck

I think that I pay a very reasonable amount for what I am getting out of it. I feel that I am learning more because of the close relationship to my professors than I would at a more costly university with a larger class size.

    What to do for fun

There isn't a ton to do around Saginaw except bowling, golfing, shopping, or simply hanging out on campus. With the right friends, you will find a way to make it fun, such as swimming or rollerblading. The football games are very fun under the lights with tailgating prior to the games.

    Food and Dining

The campus food selection is fairly good, however a Subway or places such as that would be loved. The main cafeteria has a large selection of food from burgers to vegetarian food to desserts.

    Dorm Life

The dorms here are much better than any I have seen anywhere. They are very spacious and home-like. No worries if you get homesick, the campus provides multiple events throughout the week for you to participate in, which will make you almost forget about home.

    Academic Rigor

I feel that SVSU is not extremely acedemically rigorous. There are many intelligent students here, however as long as you work hard and honestly try your best, you can succeed in any class.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips I would give are to get to know your professors really well. They are all there to help you and are all willing to help you succeed in your education. The more you participate in school activities and functions, the more people you will get to know and the better chance of getting a job after graduation you will have.

    In three sentences

SVSU has a beautiful campus with multiple studying areas and workout facilities. Everyone at SVSU is friendly and you can always expect a smile anywhere on campus. Lastly, the professors are there to actually help you and due to the small classroom size you get the one on one action with your professors.

They are very helpful if you have an issue, but they are also very diligent with parking violations. If you are parked in the wrong space, they will ticket you. It's not hard to pay off the tickets (only $10) but they do get worse if you are a repeat offender. Don't expect them to accept your excuses; they have a list of them posted in the office and online, none of which they will accept.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is not too bad, but the restaurants are much better. Get the meal plan with the least amount of weekly meals and the most flex money. The bagel shop is great, and so are the coffee places for between classes. The convenience/grocery store has a decent selection of most things you could want. It is overpriced but that won't matter if you have your flex money - I had a whole lot leftover, so I ended up buying tons of stuff at the end of the year just to use the money up.

    Dorm Life

The new dorms are really great as far as living space goes. Roommates can make or break the situation. I had bad luck with my roommates, but it was a learning experience. Try to get your RA to help reconcile differences if you can't work it out amongst yourselves. Get everyone involved in the cleaning for the monthly health inspections and general upkeep.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the classes are really easy, some too hard for their class level. It all depends on the professor. Ask your advisor about professors' teaching style or read the ratings online so you know what you are getting yourself into.

    Tips for prospective students

    Food and Dining

The food there is good and that have certain themes like international and soul food meals serve in their local diner on campus. Along with that they have other local restaurants on campus like Papa Johns, Quiznos, and more. Although those are the restaurants that take cash or declining balance (DB for short). The declining balance comes with your meal plan or you can put money on your student id.

    Dorm Life

After while the students realize that there is a police department on campus so the so call fun will be over in a second. Hey, at least you can count on them.

    Academic Rigor

    Academic Rigor

Saginaw Valley State University was not transfer friendly for me.

    Tips for prospective students

I started out at Delta College and trasnferred to Saginaw Valley State University; maybe things would have been easier for me if I started out right away at SVSU. However, I would recommend sitting down with a counselor before and after registering for classes, just to make sure you are on the right page. Knowing what you need to do, when you need to do it, and what's changing.

    In three sentences

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would have to give Saginaw Valley State University a 6. I've had problems with transferring, not knowing what classes I really needed, and I felt the counselors weren't really sure either. When I went to apply for the school of business my classes still didn't line up and I have to hang on to papers just so I have proof that they said it would be okay to avoid taking some classes, that I really didn't need them. I don't feel like they are organized and I don't feel informed about things. The teachers seem to not listen to the students and I can't find the necessary help for my classes.

    Campus Safety

Most people feel pretty comfortable walking across campus, it's peaceful, even at nighttime. This past year there was a small mishap in the parking lot, but besides that, SVSU campus is a place where you can feel very safe.

    Greek Life

There are sororities and fraternities on campus, but the choices are limited. They do organize a good amount of activities, giving people on campus something to do.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a decent amount of clubs on campus, most are volunteer type organizations or religious groups.

Great for these types of students

This University would be great for any students interested in sports. There are always people being active on the basketball and volleyball courts, but there are also lots of intermural teams.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The only truly unusual place that I can think of that actually is quite extraordinary is the 4th floor of the library, there is a gorgeous view of the campus, and it supplies a quiet peaceful place to study.

    Bang for the buck

The little grocery store (c-store) on campus is quite pricey, you're better off finding a ride to Walmart to do the grocery shopping. The dining hall is also a little expensive, but besides that the rest of the places on campus aren't that expensive, and if things are a little over-priced, it's usually worth it.

    What to do for fun

On campus, there are plenty of activities put on my sororities, fraternities, and other organizations such as Zumba. The Ryder Center (gym) is within walking distance, and is filled with basketball and volleyball courts, as well as plenty of gym equipment. If you're really into working out, you'll love it here.

    Food and Dining

For the size of SVSU, there are quite a few places to choose from to eat at. They have a bagel place, Starbucks for coffee, Quizno's for subs, Papa John's pizza, and a smoothie place as well. Plenty of choices for whatever you're in the mood for. Also there is a cafeteria, the food there is decent, sometimes there isn't much choice, but usually you can find something to cure your craving.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are very nice, the new ones such as living center south and southwest especially. Even the older dorms are decent and better than most schools such as the first year suites. They're older, but the appliances are up to date, and they are still quite spacious.

    Academic Rigor

The academics here are pretty good, you're challenged enough, but the classes aren't too tough. As long as you study and keep up on work, you're fine.

    Tips for prospective students

I would definitely tell people coming to this school that if you want the large school feel, SVSU might not be for you. Also, a car is incredibly helpful if you need to do grocery shopping or want to go out to eat off campus.

    In three sentences

SVSU is a super friendly campus. It's small enough that you occasionally run into people you know, but large enough to the extent that you constantly meet new people. It's located right outside of Saginaw, so if you don't have a car it can be difficult to get into town.

It has a lot to offer but still has a very personal feel to it. The classroom size averages around 25-30 students per class and walking around campus you will always see someone you know or recognize.

    Bang for the buck

Saginaw valley State University has the lowest tutition cost for any university in the state of Michigan. For having such low costs, it still has many great programs that it offers. There is a brand new gym and student activities center along with many brand new buildings and housing.

    What to do for fun

There are always free events being held around campus. From athletic events, free movie nights on campus to youth groups and clubs. Saginaw Valley State University also has a brand new gym and equipment room with basketball courts, and indoor track, a pool and even racquetball courts. There are several bars and clubs that are popular among the college students just miles away from the university as well as a mall and many restaurants. There is always something to do on campus or close to campus depending on what your interests are.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria, The Marketplace, referred to as DOAN or The FOC but students and faculty, has a wide variety of food from you to choose from. On any given day there are at least a half a dozen stations from you to choose from along with a salad bar, cereal and and ice cream stand. The food is much better than most universities that I have visited and eaten.

Well, there are groups you can join that do more than just study! You make new friends to hang out with and go to SVSU events with. What events? There are sports events that you can attend and there is also a sports/health building where you can work-out with friends or play some basketball, volleyball, etc. with your friends as well!

    Food and Dining

The food at SVSU is really good, but again like any other college or university, the prices will be higher than they would be off campus grounds. So, if you are willing to pay the extra, yeah, the food is exceptional!

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorms on-campus, so I really don't have a say except that it would be much more convenient than commuting 30+ minutes away all the time!

    Academic Rigor

Well, like any other college or university, there are fairly easy classes and fairly difficult ones! This also would depend on what degree you plan on receiving, but all-in-all, probably more than half of the classes are more on the difficult side than easy. That being said, if you really study, do assigned/suggested homework, practice really does make perfect or at least nearly perfect!

    Tips for prospective students

Most importantly, make sure you are prepared! If you need to have classes completed before transferring, talk to them about that to make certain you do. If you don't make a lot of money, be sure to get on-top of the scholarships available to you - most are available January - May. Communicate to your instructors if you have back-to-back classes that you may be late or have to leave early because they really appreciate the heads-up. Finally, this isn't like high school - you must actually DO the work in order to get the grade you want. Sure you might be able to skate by and prove me wrong, but for the money you spend, wouldn't you want to actually learn something?

    In three sentences

SVSU has a great campus with many opportunities to learn outside of the classroom take advantage of them. Also, the instructors may be difficult sometimes, but if you respect them and their time, they will respect you too. Take time to learn the material and know what you are talking about! Finally, really do all you can with events on campus to have that college experience, you'll really pull a lot of wonderful friends, accomplishments, and education out of your college life if you do!

    Bang for the buck

This school has the cheapest tuition in the state so it's pretty inexpensive whether you're paying for it yourself or taking out loans.

    What to do for fun

Many clubs are around campus like an outdoor club, harry potter club, intramural sports, student government, Greek life, ect.

The food is great, there is a large variety to pick from whether it is salad bar, stir fry, pizza, ect. They have it all!

    Dorm Life

All the dorms have kitchens, bathrooms, air conditioning and just an overall clean and safe environment. Dorms are awesome!

Everything is demanding like a normal university but they really take the time to help.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you attend a professor's conference hours if you're really struggling because they will take the time to sit down and help you out.

    In three sentences

Saginaw Valley is a great school! The campus has dorms that are rated number 1 in the state of Michigan, the food is highly acceptional and the school's population isn't too small but also not overwhelmingly large either. The School also helps you through the transition into college life very smoothly and there is always something to do with many clubs to get involved in!

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is a top priority. The campus police are always around and willing to help. They are quick to respond when necessary and handle situations appropriately.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is very limited and esoteric. Not much information is known about them unless students join.

    Clubs and Activities

There are plenty of clubs and activities for almost any interest. The Student Association or Student Activities Room can help students learn about the clubs and activities on campus and help students get involved.

Great for these types of students

SVSU is great for almost any type of student. The student population is very diverse. In addition, the small class sizes make it easier to get to know the other students.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Battle of the Valleys is a competition between SVSU and Grand Valley State University. We battle by seeing who can raise the most money for charity (SVSU usually wins) so there are lots of activities going on during this weeklong event. It all wraps up at the football game, where the trophy is given.

    Bang for the buck

The education is definitely worth the price of attendance. For some majors, like education, it has a great reputation for producing wonderful teachers.

    What to do for fun

There are sporting events, societies, clubs, movie nights, homecoming, and many more events for students to partake in. Dorms also have their own activities during the week for residents. The city itself has movies, bowling, and other forms of entertainment. The biggest part of it is getting involved.

    Food and Dining

There is a wide selection for food. Some places on campus are better for meal plans. Albert E's has Quiznos, Papa John's, Grille Works, and plenty of other options, like fruit cups, cereal, and salads. Einstein Bagel Bros. has quick foods for when you're in the education building. The eating areas are generally very clean.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are clean and well organized. There are plenty of different options for activities to do in the dorms. There are freshman dorms and village apartments, the latter being the better of the two.

    Academic Rigor

SVSU requires students to be responsible for their academic work. Students who work hard and attend classes will do well. Success does require a lot of work but it is up to the student to make it happen.

    Tips for prospective students

Students need to regularly check in with academic advising and their degree audit to ensure that they are on the right track to graduation. There are plenty of ways to get involved on campus, you have to find something that is right for you and then assert yourself. Take advantage of office hours, majority of the professors will do anything to help you.

    In three sentences

One of the benefits of SVSU is that it is one of the cheapest universities in the state with a wide variety of majors. With that, the classes are small, so students get a lot of attention from professors. In addition, there is an extracurricular activity for anyone who is looking to participate in something on campus; from watching movies to sports.

    Campus Safety

I feel extremely safe on campus. There are University Police constantly patrolling campus and there are emergency stations where you press a button and the police are there within minutes. You can also request to have a police officer escort you to your dorm at night if you are scared to walk by yourself.

    Clubs and Activities

As I've said numerous times, there's a ton to do on campus and there are lots of clubs to choose from on this campus. You can also start any club you want as long as you have 3 members willing to be a part of it.

Great for these types of students

This university is perfect for the student who is looking for a smaller school, but not as small as a high school. It's big enough where you are constantly meeting new people, but you still get the attention you need in class due to the smaller class sizes.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a huge rock outside on of the living centers that different groups on campus paint throughout the year. It's really fun to see it change from week to week. Also, there is the Battle of the Valleys, which is a week where we fundraise and try to beat Grand Valley State University in the amount of money we raise for an organization of our choosing. SVSU has won for the past couple of years. The week ends with the football game between the two schools, which is always a lot of fun.

    Bang for the buck

This university is one of the cheapest in Michigan. You also are not paying that much for what you get because the campus and dorms are amazing and the education you get is wonderful.

    What to do for fun

You will never get bored on this campus. There are always events thrown by different clubs and organizations. Also, there are free movie nights everything Thursday night, which shows movies that are out of theaters, but not yet available at the store to purchase.

    Food and Dining

The Marketplace at Doan is the main eatery on campus and there are so many options for every type of eater. The food is actually tasty too. I personally love Albert E's, which is the food court on campus. It's a great place to go for a quick bite to eat between classes. They also have 2 different convenience stores on campus that are commuter and resident friendly. Starbucks is also a must see if you have morning classes.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at SVSU are the best I have ever seen. They have a full sized refrigerator, oven, toaster, and big sinks. The dorms are very clean and you feel really safe while on campus. The RAs are amazing at creating programs for the residents and you are constantly meeting new people if you live on campus. I highly recommend living on SVSU's campus for at least one year during your college experience here.

    Academic Rigor

This school is a great place to get an education and they are firm in the way they deal with the academics, but it is fair. There are tons of resources available to students no matter what subject or what the problem is. It should be easy to achieve good grades here if you utilize the resources available to you.

    Tips for prospective students

I suggest joining an organization. It is a great way to meet new people and make a positive impact on the community and on campus. It also is great for networking and meeting people who could potentially help you in the future.

    In three sentences

Saginaw Valley State University is an amazing school. The campus is beautiful and the size of the student body is perfect for socialization and education. There are so many clubs and activities to do on campus, you will never be bored!

    Campus Safety

I have never had any issues with safety. I have always felt safe on campus. The police are right there and whenever there is an incident it is announced. Cameras often catch people, and their images are sent out to the student body. The campus police are usually pretty good at helping out.

    Greek Life

I have quite a few friends in Sororities and Fraternities, but I don't think the greek life is as large here as it is at some other schools. Many people are involved though, so it may get larger with time. The school is still growing.

    Clubs and Activities

There are lots of awesome clubs offered, sadly many students don't participate in them actively. I'd love to see that change!

Great for these types of students

    Education and Nursing.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Well, once a year we have this thing called Battle of the Valley's where we try to raise more money for charity than our rival school Grand Valley State University. We pretty consistently win, though our school is much smaller than theirs. But, they also kick our butts at football, so there you go. Throughout the week all kinds of events go on to raise money. One time you could smash a car with a sledgehammer for a dollar per swing. Or you can donate meals.

    Bang for the buck

Being here, you would never guess that it is the cheapest university in the state! The school is very nice and everyone there works hard. I can't wait to see what it will grow into in the next few years. Every year it grows a little more.

    What to do for fun

There are always events going on around campus, such as free thursday night movies and many many clubs. Really, as long as you are willing to put yourself out there, there are events for everyone. Things tend to die down a little in the winter months, but there is always something to do.

    Food and Dining

I suppose I have to say good, since I work at the cafeteria. But in fairness, the food is generally pretty good. Especially the dessert table! The whole place just got redone and it looks great! They also actually do listen to your suggestions. They have a facebook page where you can request foods, and with enough support they can be introduced to the menu.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great! Most the dorms in Saginaw come with a fully equipped Kitchen and lots of space. They are also rather cheap, considering nearby colleges. Dorms often have group and floor events. It's a great way to meet people.

    Academic Rigor

Honestly, this depends on what kind of professors and classes you take. Some classes are incredibly difficult, while others are really easy. It's more dependent on you and your perception of difficulty. Personally, I have found my classes to be challenging, but nothing I couldn't handle. Some classes are easier than others, however, professors are generally willing to help.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of your resources! If you get accepted into a program such as Foundations or Honors, go for it! It gets you Priority Scheduling, which trust me, will save your skin sometimes. Not to mention these programs can give you money to help you go abroad or with a civil service project. Never think you don't have the money for something, because there are lots of things out there to help you out!

    In three sentences

Saginaw has a very helpful and friendly staff. They are generally willing to help you out, but you do need to take the initiative. Students are often just as friendly as the staff.

I don't belong to any clubs or participate in any activities.

Great for these types of students

Students really into sports and academics.

    Bang for the buck

The amount were paying isn't equal to the education we are receiving. Most of the classes that I took my freshman year were classes that I had previously took in high school.

    What to do for fun

For me, personally, I like to go to the mall or movie theater located up the street when I have a few hours inbetween class.

    Food and Dining

The food is amazing but a bit expensive.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms so I can't give any intel on what Dorm Life is like.

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on the professor you have. If the Professor doesn't present the material in a way you understand it, chances are that nothing will help. So studying and paying very close attention in the difficult classes is a must.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for scholarships as soon as you find out that you are accepted. SVSU contiunes to raise thier tuition so every penny will help.

    In three sentences

SVSU is a university that normal students don't really shine in, unless you play a sport or are extremely smart. The Professors are understanding and most take the time to make sure students understand the material covered. It could use more parking spaces but even with that fault it is still a beautiful campus.

    Campus Safety

I feel very safe at Saginaw. Campus police are right on campus and there are blue lights you can push if you feel in danger or do not want to walk alone. If the button is pushed, police are there within a minute.

    Clubs and Activities

You can find clubs and activities almost anywhere you look and can easily be involved.

    Bang for the buck

Saginaw Valley is the cheapest university in Michigan which is why I attended. They also give various scholarships which make the cost even lower.

    What to do for fun

Saginaw Valley offers many activities to do throughout the week and weekend. They host multiple events during the week and have other events that are great for when finals week approaches.

    Food and Dining

Although I did not eat on campus very much, when I did the dining options and food were good. Dining hours fit well into class schedules and there's a variety of places to eat.

    Dorm Life

I think dorm life is something that most college students need to experience. Saginaw has very nice dorms and most of them do not feel like a typical dorm. The rooms are pretty big and it's a good way to meet new students.

    Academic Rigor

This is my third year attending Saginaw Valley and my course load hasn't been to vigorous. I take anywhere between 16-18 credits but have had luck with great professors who help in any way they can. I have not yet received too much work to where I have been overwhelmed.

    Tips for prospective students

My tip would be to try to get ahead in anything you do and do not be afraid to ask questions or voice your opinion if you have concerns.

    In three sentences

Saginaw Valley is a small college but I enjoy the school itself. The professors are friendly and the work load I've encountered isn't overwhelming. Overall, I am glad I attend Saginaw Valley.

I don't want to rate this too low or too high. I haven't tasted their food yet, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. But, I don't think it could ever be five star. In my experience, school food is always second rate.

    Dorm Life

A living room with couch, a kitchenette, and a table with chairs! Who could ask for more? Honestly, how many college dorms have any form of a kitchen? I also heard that the AC works great too. It is small so everything is within walking distance, no need to waste gas getting from class to class.

    Academic Rigor

It has a one on one opportunity, which large colleges lack. There programs seem to be high quality. Of course, I am not for sure on anything yet, for I have not been there.

    Tips for prospective students

I noticed on someone else's review that if you apply during your tour you don't have to pay the application fee!

Every Thursday night they have a movie night that shows a movie that isn't in the theaters anymore but still hasn't come out on DVD yet. They also have Greek Life on campus and many other programs you can join as well. They just remodeled the Ryder (the gym) and have inter-mural sports every season. There is a lot to do on campus.

    Food and Dining

There are a couple of places to eat on campus. Albert E's food court and Einsteins Bros bagels are amazing; you can use your declining balance there or can pay out of pocket. The Marketplace of Doan (in other words the cafeteria) has decent food, but nothing to brag about.

    Dorm Life

My first semester of my freshman year was rough as my roommate and I just flat out didn't get along. But second semester was a complete 180. I met some of the most amazing people that I'm still best friends with to this day (I'm currently in my junior year). The dorm rooms in North, South and Southwest are new and very spacious and great to live in. While the first year suites are a little bit older, they are a great environment to meet more people.

    Academic Rigor

General education classes very in academic rigor; the gen. eds. that qualify for program prerequisites are definitely tougher than others that only count for graduation credits. Once in a program though the teachers expect you to do a lot of studying on your own and to know your material.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest not to mess around or put off taking classes. Be flexible when it comes to signing up for classes as the process can be a little bit tricky.

    In three sentences

Lots of clubs to join up for! There's a Japanese club, academic clubs, peer health association, and so much more. There's an up-to-date Ryder center for all your exercise needs. The city of Saginaw is just down the road, with plenty of stores and restaurants. It's not the biggest city, but there's plenty going on on campus, in the city, and around the city that you should never be too bored.

    Food and Dining

Food is adequate and a tad expensive. There is a quiznos, two papa johns, a smoothie place, a grill place, a starbucks, einstein brother's bagels, and a buffet style place to eat. If those don't strike your fancy, Saginaw is just down the road. Personally, I recommend starbucks, bagels, and papa johns as your best bets for filling food. Freshmen who live on campus are also required to have a meal plan, so keep that in mind as well.

    Dorm Life

I have never actually lived in the dorms myself, but I hear they are some of the nicest facilities for Michigan dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Most professors at SVSU are very good at riding the line between busy work and being too easy. I say most because, as at any school, there are a few bad apples you should watch out for. Professors will expect a good amount from you though, and if you can meet that level, you will never have an issue in class.

    Tips for prospective students

Take AP classes or dual enroll in high school. That will give you some credits to begin with and give you an edge on registration day.

    In three sentences

Saginaw Valley is a school that has a local community vibe, but still ensures that there is always something going on for anyone no matter what their interests. They have an up-to-date exercise center that is free to the use of students, and every professor is required to have at least two hours a week delegated to being in their office to answer student questions. While it is very generous in giving almost everyone at least $1,000 in scholarships, be aware that a 4-year degree could turn into a five year one with registration conflicts.

    Campus Safety

The campus of SVSU itself is pretty safe. There are multiple emergency stations located around campus and we have our own Campus Police. The city of Saginaw is not extremely safe, but the university is about fifteen minutes from downtown because it is not located in Saginaw.

    Greek Life

There are 9 sororities and fraternities on campus. There is not Greek housing, but they are still awesome. I joined Greek life this semester and it was the best decision I have made at SVSU.

    Clubs and Activities

    Bang for the buck

The student recreation center provides fun for all different types of people. There is the usual work-out area, a 3-court basketball area, an 8 lane Olympic-sized swimming pool, as well as, racquetball/walleyball courts. The campus also has sand volleyball courts placed in the living areas, as well as, outdoor basketball courts. There is a large walking path that wraps around campus too.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining on campus is also incredible. There are seven different locations, which is a lot compared to its small campus size. There is everything from Starbucks to a convenience store.

    Dorm Life

SVSU dorm life is absolutely amazing! Each dorm has a kitchen and an in-room bathroom. There are many options for dorm living from town-homes to typical two person dorm rooms.

    Academic Rigor

SVSU is known for their extremely rigorous nursing school, athletic training program, and their business school. SVSU has a very poor math department, so I wouldn't recommend it to Math majors.

    Tips for prospective students

SVSU is definitely a commuter school. You have to get involved on campus to enjoy SVSU. I recommend the Greek Life programs that open many types of doors for their members. SVSU has great opportunities for study-abroad and on-campus employment.

I think that going to Saginaw Valley was one of the best decisions I made. It is a less expansive college that I could commute to but I did not sacrifices my education for money in anyway. It is defiantly a great value for the educational value.

    What to do for fun

Since the school is in Saginaw there is a lot of things you can do for fun. At school there is a lot of sporting events and fun teams to play on all year long. The mall is only a few miles down the road, among may other activities.

    Food and Dining

The food at SVSU is amazing. They have something for everyone. Pizza for on the go and healthier options, it is great for someone like me with food allergies because I can always find something to eat there.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorms but many of my friends do and they have loved it. I have visited several times throughout my career as a student and they are extremely nice and everyone loves to live there.

    Academic Rigor

I think that the professor at Saginaw Valley want their students to learn and to get the most out of their classes. Also, from my own experience they have been willing to help me and use different techniques to help teach me the material.

    Tips for prospective students

Also, if you are having trouble in class go to your professors office hours and tutoring, it can make a huge difference in how you understand the material and the information in general.

    What to do for fun

If you want to have fun here at Saginaw Valley State University, there are plenty of clubs and organizations that will be more than happy to include you into their midst. One in particular that I am familiar with is His House. It is a religious organization here on campus that usually meets every Tuesday for worship, but has plenty of other activities happening all throughout the week and throughout the semester. If you have a religious bent and want to have lots of fun at the same time, try out His House. The people there are really friendly and always enjoy meeting new people. Good luck!

    Food and Dining

The meal plans here on campus can be costly, but the food served at the Doan Marketplace is of good quality and abundance, so you should never go hungry. For those who like to eat out, there is also a Papa John's on campus, and they are open almost all day and very early in the morning, for the night people out there. For the coffee lovers, there is a Starbucks on campus, and for those who like a little bit of everything, Albert E's has a large array of foods from which you can select, after paying of course. This is all I have to say in regards to the food and dining services here on campus. Good luck!

    Dorm Life

The environment at the Living Centers is positive and uplifting, the people at the front desk are always willing to help you with directions and advice, and they always have positive messages on their marker board for you. The Resident Directors of each floor are strict about cleaning your rooms on a monthly basis, but they are otherwise very friendly and willing to help you with any concerns you might have in regards to dorm life. This is all I have to say in regards to dorm life here on campus. Good luck!

    Academic Rigor

Teachers expect the best of you here at Saginaw Valley State University, and often urge you to study before their tests, and give you clear instructions as what to study and where to focus your studies. They are also rather good at advice for students uncertain of their major, and offer plenty of opportunities and exercises for you to work on while you are figuring out your career path. All of the teachers I have had thus far are extremely devoted to their classes, and are extremely good at what they do. This is all I have to say in regards to the academics here at Saginaw Valley State University. Good luck!

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend the Living Centers for on-campus living if you want to live on campus, as they are cheaper than all of the rest. If you want to have an on-campus meal plan, I recommend taking the certain number of meals per semester plan, as this would also be cheaper than the rest of the plans. As there are plenty of majors and minors offered here at Saginaw Valley State University, I recommend looking around a bit before deciding on something. There are plenty of general education courses to take while you make up your mind, but you have plenty of time, don't worry. That is all I have to say. Good luck!

    In three sentences

Saginaw Valley State University is an excellent university with a broad list of majors and minors for the prospective student to look into. The programs at the university are very in-depth and informative, and the teachers are always filling to help and push you harder. It also has a good nursing program, so students interested in nursing should look into it.

    Food and Dining

Very good eating options here. There is Albert E's food court that has Quiznos, Papa Johns, and a few other less known but still delicious eating establishments. There is a Starbucks right on campus in the Science building. Einstein Bros Bagels in the Education building is great for coffee and breakfast, and more healthy eating options. Then there is the cafeteria that has all you can eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Decent food for the price you pay.

    Dorm Life

I live off campus so I don't really know what dorm life is like. But I have a few friends that live in the dorms and they like it a lot.

    Academic Rigor

I would label it a 4 out of 5 stars. I have had a few teachers who were really laid back and had really easy classes, but more times I had strict teachers who may have been really nice but the class was just really difficult. Definitely cannot pass by just being in class. You have to study your butt off to get that good grade.

    Tips for prospective students

Lay out your desired schedule for the semester that you are registering for. DO NOT use the automatic schedule maker because it will give you the worst possible scheduling options. Just go in and find your classes yourself and write down the days and times they are offered and make your own schedule. It takes a little more time but then you get the ideal schedule to fit your schedule outside of school.

    In three sentences

Saginaw Valley is a very structured school. The scheduling of classes relies on certain dates and times and what standing you are in by the number of credits you have completed. Other than that it is a very nice school with great professors and a fun learning environment.

    Academic Rigor

Most of the classes are not too rigorous, yet some can be. I found that the classes that were rigorous were just challenging enough to keep me motivated and to actually help me to learn the information.

    Tips for prospective students

One major tip that I have is to keep track of your own information along with your advisor. They are there to assist you , not necessarily do it all for you. This helped me to stay on track with all of my classes and my timeline. Another tip is to attend some campus events. Also to get to know some of your professors, it makes the time and classes go by quicker, also helps with references.

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

Campus security is always around and even in the back parking lots the feeling of a save campus can be felt.

    Clubs and Activities

Just about every club and team and activity you can imagine is available at SVSU and if it is not, the social network at SVSU is close enough to form your own.

Great for these types of students

Engineering students especially, i am on the cardinal racing team and all of the mechanical and electrical engineering students have a great chance for getting internships and their professors help them getting their classes sorted out so their degree does not take any longer than it should taking the wrong classes at the wrong time.

    Bang for the buck

Most of the classes at the college are the kinds of classes that don't transfer so the bang for your buck is quite irrelevant but for the classes that do transfer it is wise to dual enroll so that your classes cost in the $400 range and not the $1200 range. in all the degree you will get is worth the cost but dual enrollment is the best way to reduce that cost.

    What to do for fun

There are a number of academic and social clubs and teams to join including a free movie matinee night every Thursday and Friday night.

    Food and Dining

There are a number of places to eat, both on and near campus to fit both a healthy and budgeted lifestyle. there are also plenty of deal days for commuters and on campus students.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in a dorm or on campus but i hear great things about those who do.

    Academic Rigor

I have transferred from Mid Michigan Community College and the class load is a bit tougher in a university such as this, but the concepts and class difficulty is about the same so in all it is tough and will require actual work/participation

    Tips for prospective students

Take at least one math, and one of your core degree classes per semester other wise you will get all pre-requisites out of the way in the first two years and have another 3-4 years of part I,II,and III kind of classes.

    In three sentences

SVSU is a great college, they will inspire and challenge but also help and guide a new or returning student. There are plenty of opportunities to get internships and jobs opportunities strait out of school.

Great for these types of students

This is a huge campus for international students. Learning about different cultures is a blast. Also for students who do not like big lectures for learning, class sizes are relatively small.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a big rock right in front of the freshman dorms and for any special events, students are allowed to spray paint the rock.

    Bang for the buck

Saginaw Valley is very beautiful and continues to add more and remodel. The college life is a blast.

    What to do for fun

Join as many clubs as possible. here are numerous sororities and fraternities. Get involved in the community too with volunteering. There is campus life which sets up fun events for students as well.

    Food and Dining

During lunch/dinner hours, the food is great. During off times though, the food seems a little scarce. I would recommend unlimited meals; you really will get your moneys worth.

    Dorm Life

Just like little apartments. Very fun and clean; RA's are a blast and make sure to set up fun events through out the semester. If there is an issue, the housing office is very willing to help you solve the issue or move to a different dorm.

    Academic Rigor

Classes can be hard, but that is anywhere you go. The teachers are very big on office hours and asking questions. Don't feel embarrassed, because honestly you probably aren't alone. Utilize rate my professor and make sure to use the academic advisors as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focused, especially during your first two years. Get involved in as many things as possible; it opens up countless number of doors for you. Try not to get too overwhelmed with all of the new responsibilities; self care is huge.

    In three sentences

Saginaw Valley State University is honestly a very nice, great, clean school. Not only are there so many updates and remodeling occuring to make you feel at home, but the amount of classes to chose from and staff that is available if phenomenal. In my experience, each professor really cares about the learning that is occurring and encourages students to visit office hours and ask questions during lecture.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are nice and each community has its benefits. Each one has a full or half kitchen and a private bathroom (or two).

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are so easy that I think they need to be classified as remedial, even though they are 300 level courses.

    Tips for prospective students

Plan everything ahead. Stay up to date on program changes and deadlines.

Saginaw Valley is a smaller, more commuter based school with a large school feel. You see familiar faces on campus but not everyone knows your story.

There is always the painting of the big rock in the middle of campus which is always fun. And the running/walking trails to the side of campus are very nice and relaxing.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to the surrounding Universites, like CMU, Grand Valley, or WMU, I would say SVSU is better as far as price. Any University is expensive but hey, that's what comes with college.

    What to do for fun

There is always a sporting event going on or something to do in Student Life. The Student community is very big and there are many different organizations to join!

    Food and Dining

The food is good and decently priced. There is a lot of variety.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in the dorms, but from what I have seen they are about average. I like the idea of everything being right there, but I am very picky about who I live with.

    Academic Rigor

I would say it depends on which classes you are taking and what subjects you thrive in. I struggled with math and chemistry, but I was never good at those subjects. I did like psychology, and all of my pre-requisite classes like Kinesiology and Pre-Occupational Therapy classes, but that is was I am pursuing.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you know what you want to go into! If you are still not certain about what career you want to pursue, I would recommend attending a community college first such as Delta College. The price of tuition can be very costly especially if you're paying for classes that you won't end up needing.

    In three sentences

I really enjoy the atmosphere at SVSU, there is always something to do and everyone is generally nice. The professors that I have had are willing to help you as much as possible. I like the fact that the University is close to home.

College is not made to be easy but at Saginaw you can definitely rely on the tools, and resources you have to utilize on our campus. Passing a course is not hard on this campus if you push yourself, and give a 110% to every subject.

One of our best features for a smaller school are the movies they offer free of charge every thurs/fri. These movies are usually fairly new movies that have been released fairly recently. We also have numerous school events that offer plenty of opportunity to have fun.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining is pretty standard. We have a cafeteria as well as a food court and Einstein's bagels. The cafeteria is all you can eat and is usually very good with an wide selection or is limited to its selection--such as just hamburgers and pizza, thus for the 3 out of 5 stars.
