Categories Comments Great for these types of students Sam Houston State University is a GREAT school for anyone trying to pursue any major in the Criminal Justice field. Located a block away from one of Texas' Department of Criminal Justice Prison centers, criminal justice majors are able to get hands on experience in the criminal justice system. Sam Houston is also good for Business and Education majors. Their programs are recognized around the world.
Tips for prospective students As a college student, networking is an important part of your lives. On the first day of classes, make sure you introduce yourself to your professors. Try to meet as many people you can who can help you in the long run.
Bang for the buck Sam Houston is a great school with a great price. Tuition is less than other universities and still provides a outstanding education to their students. Though Sam Houston is not a big ivy league university, students are not cheated out of a good education. You will get a bang for the buck.
Am enjoying being here Though Sam Houston is located in a small town with little to do, the campus does put on various activities during the day and on weekends. Student Activities at Sam Houston during school hours are located in the court yard with numerous prizes given out on the daily. Fridays' on campus is Wear Orange Day and if you wear the school color orange, you will be given a prize.
Am learning a lot At Sam Houston State University you will not only broaden your education, but you will also broaden your understanding of other people. Going off to college, you will learn a lot about other people who are not like you and be introduced to new activities.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Sam Houston is great for the students that like a small town, small classes for more one on one direction, and enjoy community. In reality, I think Sam could cater to any type of student. It truly is an awesome institution!
Tips for prospective students Tips I can give all of you new freshman or transfers is to get involved. There are so many different organizations to get involved in so to make friends, build resumes, help your community, and to just have fun. Also, if you wear orange on Fridays, you get free stuff. I also advise you to go to all school activities because Sam gives you so many opportunities to win free stuff.
Bang for the buck I did not, and do not, have the luxury of having a lot of money. I work hard, but college, especially 4 year institutions, has gotten so much more expensive. Sam is very affordable considering how nice the campus really is. Sam provides a large scholarships, loans, grants, and a low tuition cost so that students may get a quality education and more for their money.
Am enjoying being here Sam Houston is really a beautiful campus. I like that it is in a small town and not in a busy city. It allows you to get used to being on your own but not so much that you are overwhelmed. It is very much a college town and it is nice that everyone seems to know everybody. You see many familiar faces through out the day.
Am learning a lot College is a time to expand the knowledge you already have and pursue new knowledge for use through the rest of your life. Sam Houston has allowed me to do both. In just the two semesters I have been here, I have learned more than I ever did in High School. The college atmosphere and college teachers teach you not only about what ever subject you are learning but how it applies to life as well.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who like scenic locations. Students who aren't sure about specific majors (there is a variety of major options available) Students who like agriculture, criminal justice, business, theater, music, art, and sciences.
Tips for prospective students -Apply early and apply for housing early, more likely to get your first choice especially if you want to live in Sam Houston Village. - Always take the initiative to talk to your professors, take advantage of any and all help that is offered.
Bang for the buck This is one of the least expensive colleges in Texas and for the money you are paying, you are getting an excellent deal. The education level is outstanding, there are tons of student services offered to you included in your tuition to help you make the most out of your college experience.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being here at Sam because there is always something going on here on campus. The campus is beautiful and I enjoy just sitting on on the hill while doing homework. Everything you need is in such close proximity you can practically walk anywhere you need to go. My college experience here has been fantastic so far and I can't imagine going anywhere else.
Am learning a lot The teachers here make you eager to learn as much as you possibly can. If you are willing to make the initiative, they are willing to dedicate as much time as you need to help you. There is so much to learn here at Sam Houston State University and the classroom environment makes it even easier to learn.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This is a great place for people majoring in education, criminal justice, business, theater, and dance.
Tips for prospective students If it is your first year going to college, try getting a dorm. Many people think that dorms are very small and messy. While they are small, the dorms are relatively clean and are very close to everything on campus. If you do not have a car, getting a dorm is the best way to go.
Bang for the buck This really is a great deal for a university. It is fairly cheap and I am able to pay what I can when I am able. Also, there are a lot of events on campus that give away free stuff from t-shirts, to school supplies, and even food. Its almost as if you are getting your money back.
Am enjoying being here I cannot express how great it is to be going to Sam Houston. Other than weather, this school is amazing! Everything is close by like a small town within the campus. There are also so many different organizations here, its hard to pick only a few to join.
Am learning a lot The professors here are great. Most of them want to get to know their students one on one and are very understanding to each students needs. Also, most of the classes are relatively small in size which makes it easier to excel in the classroom.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Its the number 1 Criminal Justice university in the country, number 1 teaching university in the state. and every other dept here ranks up there as well. Sam Houston may not be Harvard or Princeton, but it is ranked above almost all universities in the state. (Also its not a huge university, so it's great for anyone wanting that small town feel)
Tips for prospective students Apply early, adn start the financial aid process EARLY.. That is the only downside... Once it get's busy, the financial aid office is almos impossible to work with
Bang for the buck It's definitely worth the price. While some universities are charging upwards of 10,000 a semester, I usually end up with $2800 - $3000 a semeseter, and With the grants and scholarships they offer, I never even spend close to that
Am enjoying being here Huntsville may seem boring at first, but once you get used to it, this place is amazing. There is something going on on campus every single day. They try and make the experience as fun as they possibly can.
Am learning a lot Sam Houston is a great learning environment, Every professor I've had has been extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I've walked away from every class with a completely new outlook on that subject.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Loves learning Loves great scenery Loves to just have fun and Enjoys freedom
Tips for prospective students If you are looking for quality education without skyrocket tuition and a caring environment this is the school for you.
Bang for the buck The education that you receive is worth every penny of your dollar. The professors genuinely care and they give you your monies worth not only in class but outside of class when you need them. They do not run and hide when you need them during office hours and most of them are really good about emailing you back when you have a question.
Am enjoying being here I love living on campus. Most people say it is boring because there really isn't anything to do in Huntsville, but I love that everyone leaves on the weekends and it is so quiet and peaceful. Then during the week when everyone is on campus it is not crowded to the point where you bump into shoulders trying to get to your next class.
Am learning a lot At this school there is a great opportunity to learn outside the classroom. There are plenty of workshops that are available for you to attend that help with financial aid, getting a job, even leadership workshops. The professors are also generally willing to help a student if they ask for it. Most of them are actually concerned about their students and wants them to achieve. This is an advantage to most schools because its not a if you do not get it oh well type of atmosphere.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you enjoy being in the country-like area, here's the place for you to be. The weather might be a bit crazy, but it's Texas, what else can you expect? The school spirit is completely amazing, especially when the holidays are around. Music program and Criminal Justice will cradle you in nicely!
Tips for prospective students Be sure you've got your studying habits in check because these classes aren't easy if you don't know how to focus in school. Be ready to see friendly people and haul yourself up and down a giant hill. There's plenty of organizations to choose from and expect to make a lot of long-lasting friendships.
Bang for the buck It's one of the cheapest schools in Texas and for all the help we receive from teachers it's perfect. Everything is within reach of the school and when it comes to eating or books, there's a variety of places to get everything from.
Am enjoying being here It's a beautiful campus full of the friendliest people you'll ever meet. Smiles are passed around even when it's raining cats and dogs, and if you ask for help anyone is willing to help. It's calm at night and rowdy during the day, we've got enough school spirit. The city is nice to travel around in and we're not too far from any place. It's the perfect getaway.
Am learning a lot Sam Houston isn't too big of a school, but it's not very small either. It's just the right size, giving classrooms the perfect amount of students for professors to handle. Teachers give attention when you need it, and if you don't feel like teachers are enough, there are different centers from writing to reading around campus to help tutor you.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students SHSU is excellent for those who are looking for small classes and don't want to be just another number. You can really get to know your professors. Also, anyone who prefers to be away from big city life would love the environment.
Will enjoy being here I attended Saturdays@Sam and the moment I set foot on campus, I loved it. SHSU has such a peaceful setting, in a non-hectic environment. There's even a park nearby which would be a nice and quiet place to read a book or sketch some wildlife.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Honestly, you have to pay attention in class. Be respectful. Do not be afraid to ask questions. DO NOT BE LATE FOR YOUR CLASSES. Keep up with your studying and your grades. Professors recognize their hard-working students (they have special rewards for you at the end of the semesters). You just have to make sure that you keep up with all of your homework and all of your deadlines.
Am enjoying being here The students are so energetic and friendly. There are many events happening on campus that lots of students attend. They also make you feel at home. You'll be surprised by how many different majors you can meet.
Am learning a lot Sam Houston State University has great professors. They love working with their students and love seeing them work really hard. However, if you do not ask them for help, they will simply think that you understand their materials. Do not be afraid to email them or contact them. They are there to help you learn. Take advantage of them.

Categories Comments Campus Safety there are stations throughout campus that have phones to call upd if there is an emergency.
Greek Life there are many awesome sororities to choose from!
Clubs and Activities shsu is always coming up with new clubs and organizations. everyone will find somewhere they fit it!
Great for these types of students students who like to study one-on-one with professors will love sam houston.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus every friday is spirit day and you wear orange and represent your love for the bearkats!!
Bang for the buck tuition and housing prices are very low, and what you get in return exceeds what you pay.
What to do for fun there is a duck pond that is nice to go when you want to just relax. the movie theater is very cheap, it's only five dollars to see a film at night and on weekends, which is a steal compared to the ten you have to pay in larger cities on campus student activities hosts many fun events.
Food and Dining shsu recently built a new dining area. the food is great quality and affordable.
Dorm Life the dorm rooms have just the right amount of space for everyone. shsu built a new dorm building a year ago, it is very nice.
Academic Rigor all of the classes are accredited and the professors are very helpful. there are tutoring centers in every department! it's awesome!
Tips for prospective students study, study, study and go to class. don't slack in the beginning it makes everything that much harder.
In three sentences sam houston state university has an amazing environment. the teacher-student ratio is perfect. the atmosphere is perfect for anyone who doesn't want to get lost in the crowd.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students trying to attend a school where you are far enough from home that you don't have to stay with your parents, but you can still go home anytime you want.
Tips for prospective students take every opportunity available, and meet as many people as possible. you will learn a lot and have fun doing it.
Bang for the buck tuition is fairly priced.
Will enjoy being here The clubs seem awesome and the students really try to make you feel accepted into the group.
Academic Rigor the staff is very nice and friendly. they don't try to make you feel like a number in the school but an individual.

Am learning a lot SHSU is a wonderful school. The professors here are truly helpful if you take the time to ask questions and really try hard they will help you as much as they can! Study for everything!! The schoolwork is not that difficult if you actually try!!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is great here. There are places you can call for help everywhere on campus so no worries. Someone is always willing to escort you to your car.
Greek Life Greek life was not the best but the new lines coming out will be awesome. This upcoming semester we should see life in the Greeks.
Clubs and Activities The Fox and shenanigans are the two main clubs here. I only go to the Fox because I hate smoke!
Great for these types of students I am a nursing major and i absolutely love to be out and about. If i am not studying then i am out meeting new people. We all call each other Sam Fam because we become so close here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There aren't any unusual traditions but come out to the football games they are so fun and they have free food for days.
Bang for the buck Get meal plans only if you do not have a kitchen to cook. You will save a lot if you know how to coupon or just use them!
What to do for fun Intramural sports is great here at SAM. Be involved and get into some clubs. I love going to the Fox(a club) and the fair grounds with the Greeks.
Food and Dining South paw and Paw print have all of the fast food you'd ever desire. Old main pit has the home cooked meal you need to feel good and keep your energy high for a long day.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great if you love twin beds. I wish i had more storage as a freshman and a bigger bed. SHV is the best place to live as a freshman.
Academic Rigor Classes are great if you get the right professor. If you do not then your semester will suck. Always ask upperclassmen on who to take.
Tips for prospective students Bring your own everything; it might sound mean but sharing often gets you in many fights with your room mate if you do not know them very well. Live on campus; you save gas and get a workout in because everything is walking distance.
In three sentences Sam Houston has a great atmosphere. I love the campus life because they always have a program available to attend and meet new people. The activities that are provided keep you in shape and up to date on everything going on not only on campus but off campus community service projects as well.

Categories Comments Campus Safety unfortunately, there have been some sexual assaults and car break-ins. upd is constantly roaming the school, and there are numerous emergency call posts all over campus. i typically walk with someone at night to get home safely.
Greek Life there are many sororities and fraternities for students to join.
Clubs and Activities there's something for everyone. there are tons of clubs for people to join and it's what you make it. the school encourages its students to get involved.
Great for these types of students this school is great for students who want a small classroom experience. many classes have about 30 students in specific areas but some freshman core classes have under 200. it's a great campus to walk around to get a work out and the school appeals to those who want a college experience for a cheaper price.
What to do for fun the weekends can get pretty boring but sometimes, i have found things to do. there are dancing clubs close to campus such as shenanigans and the jolly fox. also, there is a movie theater about 5 minutes from campus that plays new movies for $3 before 6 pm. there's a mall in the woodlands but it takes about an hour to get there by car. other than these options, there are football, basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, and more athletic games you can attend.
Food and Dining the dining hall has its good and bad days. sam houston opened its new dining hall this year that prepares meals in front of students and offers a variety of food options for every meal. there is also a place for fast food such as chick-fil-a, burger king, sushic, etc. these can be paid for with bearkat bucks. however, much of the food is unappealing or overused as time goes on.
Dorm Life in my experience, the dorm life is unappealing. many of the dorms are too small and too old. in one of the nicer dorms, students were noisy and running around the halls, leaving messes for janitors to pick up.
Academic Rigor the classes aren't too hard but you have to study a lot. many classes have lectures and assigned reading that you have to pay attention to for finals.
Tips for prospective students some professors will give you homework or papers way in advance on their syllabus. do not wait until the last minute because you will be craming and stressing out during finals. try to get involved in the campus because we're all about helping the community and servicing others.
In three sentences sam houston offers classes that are high-school size and entertain students. professors are very easy to contact and many will learn who you are to better enhance your learning. however, the school can be a bit lonely and boring because many students go home for the weekends. the school is safe and there is tons of school spirit.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Criminal Justice: Huntsville is also home to the Texas State Penitentiary. Theatre/Musical Theatre/Dance: The MT and Theatre and Dance staff are great, and even if you don't get cast, being a theatre student here is a feather in your cap for auditioning in Houston.
Tips for prospective students Get used to eating at Tortilla Fresca or Old Main. You have to be on a meal plan as a freshman, so you may as well make the most of it.
Bang for the buck The expected cost semester is $8,000-$9,000, but you only pay about $6,000 per semester to the university. If you know how to stretch your dollar, personal expenses won't cost you as much as the school thinks it will.
Am enjoying being here The campus is nice, and there's a pretty good level of school spirit, especially when it comes to football.
Am learning a lot The quality of education here is good, especially for CJ and fine arts students.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students looking for a small community feel. Classes are typically small and everyone is so friendly.
Tips for prospective students Get a meal plan! The cafeteria is brand new and delicious. The food is made in front of you and served to you. Campus is hilly so you don't feel bad for getting seconds in the dessert line, which you will want to do. Last week they served chocolate chip cookies on a stick dipped in chocolate and had toppings laid out like sprinkles and nuts.
Bang for the buck Sam Houston State University is priced very competitively! Tuition is reasonable and the dorms are nice for the price.
Am enjoying being here There are so many organizations to get involved in at Sam Houston State University and a lot of near by organizations also. Huntsville is only 30 minutes from the Woodlands, which has a mall and many restaurants.
Am learning a lot The professors at Sam Houston State University really get to know every student and are willing to spend time after class with confused students.

Tips for prospective students It is helpful to make a curriculum calendar and make sure to take the required courses for a major. Stay focused and remember to meet all deadlines for assignments as well as for school payments and financial aid.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students that love a small town, classes, and school. They even built more buildings to add more majors to their list. Very diversity school.
Tips for prospective students Great school if you want to interact closely with your teachers and also if you want to meet great people. SHSU is like a close-tight family. I'm happy to have graduated from here.
Bang for the buck The tuition at SHSU is very good. The price is perfect for such a small town
Did enjoy being here In the small town of Huntsville, the school is the best place to go to college at. Great way to meet people quickly with alot of activities to enjoy going to.
Did learn a lot SHSU classes were so small that I was able to have one on one conversations with the teachers and they were more understanding than other colleges.

Categories Comments Campus Safety campus safety is something that i do not worry about here. i get updated emails and text messages whenever weather or criminal events happen. campus police are always around the next corner and are very friendly.
Clubs and Activities there are over 200 organizations and clubs offered at sam houston with more being added each year.
Great for these types of students here at sam, we are known for our forensic science programs. we also offer a great fine arts program. i am involved in the agricultural department and can say that it was a good choice for me.
Bang for the buck sam houston was the perfect choice for me and many others. its hard not to be happy here.
What to do for fun at sam houston life is never boring. there is always some sport event going on, or you can participate in your own rec sport team. yoga, pillaties, excersising is also provided. concerts, lectures, dinners, tournaments are always going on around campus. also at the student center the kat center has wall size tv's, air hockey, pool tables, etc offered.
Food and Dining sam houston takes pride in the dining halls available. a brand new dining facility has just been opened and it is top notch along with the other dining halls on campus.
Dorm Life dorm life is never boring, and there is always programs and activities going on to help you meet new people and interact with people you live around.
Academic Rigor the classes here are challenging yet passable with a high grade. the teacher to student ratio is ideal and the teachers take time out to help the students.
Tips for prospective students it is very important to get a good advisor that will help you not hinder you in choosing your class schedule. forget high school, college is a whole new level!
In three sentences the campus is a very relaxing and yet active. students take pride in wearing our school colors and supporting are many sports and organizations. some of the most personable staff/students you'll ever meet on a campus!

Categories Comments Campus Safety sam houston is awesome when it comes to campus safety. they have their own police force and about every ten to fifteen feet is a security pole. if you have a late night class and you don't feel comfortable walking in the dark, you can activate one of the poles and a sam houston police officer will escort you to where you want to go!
Great for these types of students if you're new to the college scene or prefer a smaller college experience, sam houston is the place to go. if you like to sit out in nature in between classes, sam houston offers gorgeous, texas hill country scenery. the local squirrel population is booming and the little things are pretty used to people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there's demon road which a lot of sororities and fraternities like to use for induction. actually, there's about five or six demon roads since people tend to move the legend around. sam houston has a storied rivalry with stephen f. austin state university. each year when the two teams play, it becomes a really big deal. the campus bookstore sells all sorts of t-shirts for the games. my personal favorite is mamas don't let your babies grow up to be lumberjacks! a rip off the famous song mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys. eat 'em up, kats! is the sam houston battle cry.
Bang for the buck tuition isn't that high, and for what you pay, it is really pretty nice. the campus is beautiful and clean. there's a large, open courtyard in the middle of campus and so many computer labs i've lost count. the courtyard has low walls, iron benches and woven metal tables with ivy climbing them. on the pretty days, it's the most populated area on campus.
What to do for fun sam houston has all sorts of clubs and organizations to join. i belong to chi alpha--which is actually a nationwide, college-aged christian ministry. there's also all the theater groups, the english honors society (which recently took a trip to new orleans) as well as the japanese club. just about everybody goes to shenanigans on thursdays to dance. thursdays seem to be the big party nights around here. there's a movie theater and a small mall in town. there's an even bigger mall and much nicer theater only 20 minutes away in conroe or 45 minutes away in the woodlands. houston is an hour's drive and galveston is just beyond that. late at night during the week, a lot of people flock to walmart just to stand in the only open line with their five things. that's one of the best entertainments in hunstville!
Food and Dining sam houston has so many different food choices, it's amazing. there are at least six different dining halls on campus. old main and belvin hall offer more buffet style eating while south paw and pawprint offer everything from mexican food to pizza and sushi. my favorite place to eat is southpaw because it has both starbucks and subway in it. on cold days, i grab a sub and a venti mocha and eat while checking my facebook on one of the computers southpaw offers for its patrons.
Dorm Life the dorm life is pretty good. most of the ra's are very nice and try to solve your problems. there really isn't a strict curfew and, for the most part, the noise level isn't too bad. almost all of the dorms are real close to campus and will save you plenty of money on gas if you walk.
Academic Rigor while sam houston certainly isn't harvard or yale, it has some challenging courses if you're willing to look for them. the professors aren't lazy and want to teach you everything they know in the shortest amount of time. depending on how many hours you take, it's more than possible to balance your homework load by spreading your classes out a little more.
Tips for prospective students if you want to live in a dorm, apply for housing as soon as you possibly can. that way you can get a better choice of where to live. if you're lacking on the friendship side of things, sam houston has all sorts of clubs and organizations you can join.
In three sentences sam houston is a great university for those looking to transfer smoothly between high school and a larger university. its faculty and staff are extremely helpful. it has more than enough dining choices to fit any preference: from sushi to beans and rice!

Categories Comments Campus Safety there is always police on campus. it has a criminal justice college so that makes sense, but all of the cops are nice. they ticket a bunch for parking, but have always been around to make the campus feel safe even sitting next to a prison.
Clubs and Activities there is something for everyone. there is quidditch. la-cross, band, student government, social sororities, academic sororities, tons of youth groups associated with church. it's so easy to get involved in something you really love.
Bang for the buck i feel like i'm going to a big leage school, in a small town setting. my tuition is 1/4 what i would pay at one of those schools though.
What to do for fun i go on picnics in nice weather. there's lots to do on campus, and there is always some sort of event going on somewhere.
Food and Dining the dining halls close by 8 pm which kind of stinks. particularly if you have a sport that practices later than that and you didn't get a chance to catch dinner.
Dorm Life i love living in the dorm. you meet new people, and it becomes a home away from home.
Tips for prospective students as silly as it sounds, get your leg muscles working! the campus has lots of hills. also, never be trying to park during meal hours by the dining halls. learn to parallel park.
In three sentences i absolutely love sam houston, and it is the perfect college for me. the campus is smaller and really pretty to walk through. but the most important thing is the teachers, and they are by far the best ones i've ever had.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I've never had an incident
Great for these types of students Criminal Justice majors, people who like to walk, people who like to save money
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Lots! Some places on campus are haunted, so be sure to look into Demon Road and Black Jesus if you get the chance.
Bang for the buck Like I said, it's inexpensive. I got a degree in animation $100,000 cheaper than if I had gone else where.
What to do for fun There's the Blue Lagoon if you have a diving permit, and also the State Park nearby if you want to swim, hike, or have a cook out.
Food and Dining If the campus food isn't for you, there's a lot of nice and inexpensive restaurants in the area.
Dorm Life I enjoyed my dorm experience, especially because my dorm was right next door to the dining hall.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to walk a LOT.
In three sentences It's a pretty good school. It's fairly inexpensive compared to other colleges in the state. Just don't neglect your studies!

Categories Comments Campus Safety You can feel safe on this campus. There is a campus-wide notification by e-mail, text, or phone call in case of emergency. Locations throughout campus with emergency call boxes, campus security escorts, and a well lit campus make SHSU safe.
Clubs and Activities There are groups for every student to find a niche they will love. The Student Activities office is also a great office to assist in finding any organization that you seek.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus SHSU has undergone many transformations from when I first was a freshmen in 2007. No longer will you walk campus and see a ton of other university t-shirts. You'll see our SHSU Orange. The traditions and spirit of campus are a growing fashion now.
Bang for the buck This is one of the cheapest universities yet we are ranked in the top for many of our academic fields. Criminal Justice. Education. Business. And others.
What to do for fun While most students would say there is nothing, that is because they've made no friends and connections in Huntsville. You're either a commuter student or you enjoy the company of your friends who are in town.
Food and Dining With the new dining hall, Old Main Market, opened now, the food quality has gone up some. It is what it is. Campus dining. As for the other eating locations on campus, they are expensive comparably to how much it would cost to eat off campus and especially to those who cook at home.
Dorm Life Dorm life at SHSU isn't how it's portrayed in movies. You can easily go through without ever meeting anyone who lives in your dorm. This isn't for a lack of effort with events done by the dorm staff. As for any conflicts that may arise, the dorm staff is great in helping fix the situation quickly.
Academic Rigor The courses will challenge you if you take the right professors but at the same time, they are there to help you. You can complete your degree with little trouble if you seek the help you might need and stay current and on top of your coursework.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared. Always stay on top of your financial aid information. Stay current in class and actually get to know your professors. It is much easier to do at SHSU than other universities as it is smaller classes.
In three sentences The campus is small enough you feel welcomed but large enough you get the who university feel. It's a great place to live and continue your path of education. I've loved it every moment I've been here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I believe that our school safety is top notch. All dorms get fire drills once a month. And the school was once put on lock down because there was a boy walking around with a Nerf Gun. They take it pretty seriously.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs to join and they are all very interesting. Clubs ranging from an anime clubs to poker clubs. Almost anything is available. And with the right resources, you might be able to make your own club.
Bang for the buck Of all the colleges that i had been accepted to. Sam Houston was the most affordable. Even without much money to my name, i am still able to work enough to pay my tuition. I recommend it to anyone who is looking to go somewhere affordable.
What to do for fun As i said before, the fun is in any group that you join. You're bound to make friends and you may learn a lot of things.
Food and Dining The food at the school is delicious. We have three different cafeterias. Each of them serving their own type of food. My personal favorite is South Paw, where they serve great foreign food like sushi and fajitas.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great. I believe all the dorms have little activities planned our through the year. Make sure to always participate in the dorm activities, you'll be sure to make a new friend.
Academic Rigor No matter what school you go to, as long as you try hard, you should be able to make it through. Don't let anything get in your way of your studies.
Tips for prospective students For any prospective students, make sure you're ready to join a club. In clubs, and sports, it is much easier to make friends. And you may even be really good at it.
In three sentences Sam Houston state university has a great community of people. With it being in a small town, communication is a bit easier. Unfortunately there are not a lot of places to go to.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very safe and makes you feel like you can go anywhere.
What to do for fun There are plenty of places to go around the university and within the university. There is a fantastic recreation center and many more things to enjoy.
Food and Dining Food is delicious and there are many options for everyone.
Dorm Life I have heard it is amazing.
Academic Rigor Very attention and educationally focused university that is here to help you succeed in the future.
Tips for prospective students Talk to people, get to know current students and faculty. Take advantage of the organizations around campus and the services they provide.
In three sentences It is a diverse, yet homey school that makes it clear the everyone is welcome. It has a lot of opportunities for students and people seeking employment. The people are helpful, understanding, and informative.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Sam Houston is probably the safest campus on the planet. With the heart of the Texas prison system being located here, criminals want to get away from this place. Sam Houston has their own police force, along with the cities police, all of the county officers are located in town, and the prison also has several hundred staff.
Greek Life Not involved so I couldn't give an opinion.
Clubs and Activities You have the option to get involved anywhere you would like.
Great for these types of students This school is great for students who want to go off to a decent size school, but still want to be known by their professors.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is the ring ceremony for seniors that happens in April. They also light up a huge Christmas tree every January. Probably the coolest tradition is the Battle of the Piney Woods football game between Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin. The past three year the game has been held at Reliant Stadium where the Texans play.
Bang for the buck The value can't be beat. A top grade education for a very reasonable price.
What to do for fun There are over 300 organizations on campus to choose from. There are also many ways to get involved in the community. I personally served an off-campus Christian organization, and got super involved with following the football team. There is something for everybody.
Food and Dining The meal plans are expensive and you don't get great selection. They just built a new dining facility last year, but it costs upwards of $7 a meal.
Dorm Life If you have to live in a dorm definitely go for the newer built ones. I stayed in an older dorm to save money and it wasn't worth the money I saved. Also, it is nice to get to pick your roommate or meet them ahead of time so that you can see if you'll get along.
Academic Rigor Classes weren't too difficult for me. I was also an honors student and it was a great program to be in.
Tips for prospective students I would definitely go to Sam if I had to do it all over again. The experience and the affordability can't be matched.
In three sentences I have enjoyed my time at Sam Houston. It's a beautiful campus that is not too big. You can see the same people and meet someone new everyday.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UPD is great, they have call stations placed all over campus and will escort you home from the library late at night. Also they have the wonderful Kat Safe alert system that sends a text to your phone if there is a campus emergency.
Greek Life From what I've experienced the greek life at sam is not nearly as much fun as at some of the other schools I've visited and there are only four panhellenic sororities. Also the sorority houses are on campus dorms (which can cause a lot of limitations) and none of the frats have houses. Although in all fairness there are quite a few students who really enjoy greek life here.
Clubs and Activities There are some amazing groups on campus to join. Something for every interest!
Great for these types of students Students who want a great education and like a fun and open atmosphere.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a museum and duck pond just across Sam Houston Avenue, and there is a giant statue of Sam Houston at the state park. The high security prison (with death-row) is just a few blocks away.
Bang for the buck Some of the best programs for criminal justice, theatre and dance, and education in the entire country, without the inflated tuition of a private university.
What to do for fun Football Tailgating, intramural sports, and various on campus and rec center events. Also head across the street to the park to feed the ducks and chickens and check out the museum.
Food and Dining The Old Main Market cafeteria has a lot of great food and decent hours on weekdays. There are also a lot of other dining options on campus (Starbucks, Quiznos, Chik-Fil-A, Eintstein's Bagels, and convenience store) that all take Bearkat Bucks. Not many options on the weekend though.
Dorm Life Some of the buildings are just too old, and
Academic Rigor Great Honors College, teachers, and small class sizes. All without the stuffy and pretentious atmosphere of a lot of other prestigious schools.
Tips for prospective students Get involved with campus organizations and apply for housing early!
In three sentences Great academic programs without the expensive tuition and stuffy atmosphere of other schools. One of the country's most underrated schools. The best university you've never heard of.

Categories Comments Campus Safety If though Huntsville, is known for its prisons, we have SO much police here, its crazy. There is campus police, Huntsville police, county police that patrol all the time. You wont go a day without seeing a police car around, which is comforting for those who might be scared to come!
Greek Life Greek Life is present here on at Sam. I would do research on it before coming to college so you can decide what sorority/fraternity is best for you.
Clubs and Activities Lots of clubs and organizations here on campus! Over 200+ clubs to join. If you cannot find one of those to fit your needs, you can make one!
Great for these types of students Sam is so diverse! All kinds of people are here at Sam, and everyone is really nice and friendly!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Nothing unusual, just lots of orange Bearkat spirit!!!! LO
Bang for the buck SHSU is one of the cheapest universities in the state of Texas. You will get a good education here and wont break your bank or leave you will lots of students loans. It is VERY affordable, one of the main reason I came here myself!
What to do for fun There is always something to do for the most part at Sam. Movies, a sporting event, the club, a house party, or small restaurants to hang out with friends, there is plenty to do if you get involved and meet people.
Food and Dining Food and Dining is pretty good! We have a new facility, Old Main Market that was built in the summer of 2011 which has a great variety of food. We also have other fast food places on campus, like Paw Print and South Paw. What ever your fix or crave, you can get it at Sam!
Dorm Life Sam Houston State has some of the biggest dorm rooms compared to other colleges in Texas. There are no more than 2 people in a room, and the lowest end dorms share a bathroom with 4 people. There are lots of events to do within your dorm too, so get involved!
Academic Rigor The academics at Sam is not the hardest...but its not the easiest either. It really depends on what you are majoring in and studying. The professor s are very personable though and you can always go to their office hours for extra help or just to chat!
Tips for prospective students Visit the campus. Come to a football game. Go visit a class. Visit the shops in Downtown Huntsville. Really engage yourself to the college atmosphere when you come so you can make a good decision if Sam is the right school for you.
In three sentences Sam Houston State University is an amazing school! If want to go to a school with a small town feel, small student to teacher ratio, and students that have great school spirit, then this is the school for you!

Dorm Life I was a transfer student living off campus which is nice. So after your first year you will have the option of living off campus.
Academic Rigor As a Film major I enjoy my classes
Tips for prospective students Study than have fun it all pays off at the end.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities Oh my gosh, there are a ton. I know they have a few just for Criminal Justice students. They have a karate club, Quidditch, camping club, and PLENTY more. My camp advisers said they have over a 100 different clubs. And Intermural sports.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I know the prison facility is right next to the campus, so you can drive past that and the prison rodeo which is no longer in business.
Bang for the buck Definitely one of the cheapest schools I looked into and my mom and I love it!!
What to do for fun The camp was Criminal Justice based, so we did a lot of things related to that, but on our free time we went bowling, to a restaurant with an arcade, and to a very nice park. I've even heard they have a cheap movie theater.
Food and Dining It was the middle of the summer and we visit the Paw Print. Not all the places were open so we went to the Chick-fil-A. We had to use cards that were limited, so we didn't get the best quality of food. However, if we were allowed to spend more, the food looked appealing. Also, some of the other places in the Paw Print that weren't open were places I love.
Tips for prospective students I'm doing everything I can for scholarships and I'm going to get comfortable with the teachers so I'm not afraid to ask for help. I've heard they are so helpful in taking the time to work with you.

Clubs and Activities There are plenty of student activities around campus, all you have to do is find it in LSC which is right in the center of campus.
Great for these types of students For outgoing types of students. But there are clubs for every single major so there is always something to do on campus.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Farrington Pit. It is usually where probates are held.
Bang for the buck The refund money just needs to be spent wisely because there are plenty of fast food places around town but besides that, the town of Huntsville is worth it.
What to do for fun Join Greek Life or clubs/organizations.
Food and Dining Our cafeteria is called Old Main Market, that place has different varities of food. It has healthy food that is served in great prortions so that the student does not over eat. The chef's really work hard to satisfy and keep smiles on the students faces with their friendliness. We also have Paw Print which consists of Chick-Fil-A, Burger King, Pizza Hut and Quizno's. This is a great eating establishment because here Bearkat Bucks could be used. Another place to use them is South Paw which has Subway, Starbucks, Sushic, and Tortilla Fresca. Tortilla Fresca is where students can use their meal plan if OMM is inconvenient at the time. Other places are Einstein Bagel Bros and Java City. Sam Houston really offers a lot of great places for students to eat.
Dorm Life The dorms are nice sized and I have nothing negative to say about them. When you are assigned a roommate it is best that you have rules and get to know each other right off the back. The roommate evaluation forms are usually pretty accurate.
Academic Rigor It is easy to make excellent grades here, but you MUST apply yourself. Try your best not to procrastinate and do all of your work on time. Tutoring is very easy to find and the best part about it is that it is free so take advantage of all the help there is offered here.
Tips for prospective students Definitely take advantage of ratemyprofessor.com because this information helped me a lot, and it resulted in me having great understanding professors.
In three sentences Sam Houston is a great university. There is always something to do here. The professors are awesome.

Food and Dining Limited dining hours but Old Main will go out of their way to accommodate any dietary needs you may have.
Dorm Life A lot of the dorms are really nice with plenty of private space. But not all it depends on what you want to pay.
Academic Rigor If you get a bad teacher it happens sometimes but most teachers go out of their way for you to do your best.
Tips for prospective students Think ahead of where you want to live, you may say it won't matter but believe me it will. The campus is great and everything is in close walking distance. However the dining halls have limited hours.
In three sentences I love this school!! its great if you don't want a giant school. Some say its small but I think its a great fit, I only live an hour away but I feel like I'm in a whole different place and separated. It has great opportunities for students to be involved or not.

What to do for fun There are a lot of events always going on, on campus and I try my best to attend all of them. I like to go to the rec center, and also the pool is open all year.
Food and Dining The dining hall is a great place to eat (3 courses a day).
Dorm Life Living on campus will help you meet people. Before I moved into the dorm I did not know anyone here, now I have plenty of friends.
Academic Rigor Sam Houston is the school to go to if you want academic success.
Tips for prospective students Study hard and have a good time- These are the only tips that I can give. Studying will help you get good grades, and have fun will help enjoy your college experience.
In three sentences Sam Houston is a very diverse school, and the students and faculty here help create a strong community. Attending Sam Houston Will enable you to feel like you belong. Sam Houston is a great school, and I would not want to attend any other school.

Tips for prospective students Speak with a counselor to help you with selecting your major and what classes to take.
In three sentences I loved my experience at SHSU. Beautiful campus, interesting course selections, and some of the best professors who are always available for additional help or questions. I would highly recommend SHSU to anyone interested in a degree in criminal justice.

Categories Comments Campus Safety SHSU has campus escorts who you can call any time and they will walk you to your dorm. Campus is not too big, so it would take someone less than 10 minutes to get to their dorm from anywhere on campus. parking is horrible so once you find a parking spot you may not want to move your car all semester.
Greek Life There are a lot of sororities and fraternities on campus but all of them are overshadowed but Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship which continually has more members that all of the Greek life combined and it is free so you don't have to pay thousands of dollars to be a part of it.
Clubs and Activities There is every kind of club found on campus and students from different countries. SHSU spends a lot of money on free activities for students so that is a plus.
Great for these types of students Great for students who live on campus and want to be involved during college. The school is still small enough that you can be a big fish in a relatively small bowl.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a place called the pit on campus where an old building burnt down decades ago and now there is a brick hole in the ground, it is called the old main pit. SHSU sometimes puts on parties there and bands sometimes play there.
Bang for the buck Compared to most universities, Sam Houston is by far the best priced with the most nationally recognized programs. The faculty and staff go above and beyond to bring exciting and key people to campus, you just need to pay attention to announcements!
What to do for fun There are lots of free things to do other than go to clubs and house parties, such as Avenue L coffee House, Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, SHSU student activities' program counsel and residential programs. If you want to meet tons of people join Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship because they are the largest organization on campus and they have tons of free activities at all times of the day.
Food and Dining There is a great new dining hall called old main, which as lots of variety from veggies to pasta and desserts. They give you small portions you can come back as many times as you like. The dining halls are not open 24 hours so plan when you will be hungry, and make sure to buy a prepaid meal plan or you will have to pay $10 every time you want to eat there.
Dorm Life There are many new dorms like Lonestar and raven village, these are a lot nicer than king hall, Jackson shaver, and the small houses. If you need a quiet dorm ask to live on an academic floor because these are quieter. All dorms have digital card access so it is safe for students but really hard if you loose your card.
Academic Rigor you can go to rate a prof.com and check out most of the professors. If one has all bad reviews don't take their class; the professor can make the class easy and fun or horrible, so watch out. From my experience, all the professors really tried to help each student who asked for help and never purposely flunked anyone.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you check out the dorms that you like best and sign up for one asap. there are nice new ones and old not-so-nice ones. Go to new student orientation and get advised for classes and ask lots if questions so that you are not lost when classes start.
In three sentences It is a decent looking campus and the school takes pride in providing fun free activities to students. The close community makes it easy to get involved in several activities if you choose to do that. The classes are challenging but not overly hard, It is not too hard for anyone to make an A if they try and go to tutoring.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck LOTS to do that comes free with your student ID. Almost all sports games and things like that are free, which makes it very easy to have cheap fun.
What to do for fun There is definitely a lot of things you can do for fun. There are hundreds of student organizations and you can even go to the beach, which is only 2 hours away. Houston is about an hour away and you can have fun there too. It's a great location and has lots to do.
Food and Dining There are many options on and off campus for food. The dining hall also has lots of options as well.
Dorm Life Having had 3 room changes, dorm life is great when you get to the right room with the right roommate. Luckily, the residence life staff makes it very easy to fulfill your needs and is there when you need them.
Academic Rigor The classes are not too terribly difficult, but enough to where you're challenged and not completely bored.
Tips for prospective students Sign up for things that you don't think you would have done in high school. College is so different from high school and you never know what you're going to like here. So just put yourself out there, it's a great way to meet new people and learn new things.
In three sentences Sam Houston State University is a great school for those who love diversity. It is rich in plenty of different cultures and makes a way to incorporate every single one of those cultures together so people learn to accept diversity. It is also great for those that love extra curricular activities and has hundreds of things to do besides class.

Food and Dining The meal plans here are expensive, and the food at the cafeteria is not worth it.
Dorm Life This depends on how quickly you register for dorms. Sometimes you get lucky and get an amazing dorm, or get stuck in a small cramped room.
Academic Rigor Not only does Sam Houston challenge you, it makes challenging exercises fun. I find myself wanting to study.
Tips for prospective students Always research professors before signing up for a class. Never allow yourself to become lazy or slack off. Your GPA will appreciate it.
In three sentences Sam Houston has created several oppurtunities for me. I am challenged here and I work diligently because of the high standard professors hold me to. Sam Houston State University is growing and continues to impress me.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Safety is THE number one thing they this university that is on top. There are so many on-campus police around and they even have a system to have someone walk with you to the parking lot if it is really dark and you are worried that something might happen. I had to learn in one of my criminal justice classes all the crime being committed on campus in Texas, including Sam Houston. I found out that Sam Houston did not have any crime being committed on campus, which really amazed me because a majority of schools out there did.
Clubs and Activities I don't know about clubs because I spend most of my time studying and doing homework rather than to attend some meetings for clubs. But, activities are great that are on campus. Like I said before, the university tries really hard to bring all the students together and participate in any activity that the hold.
Bang for the buck I'm not quite sure what this mean, I apologize. If this statement means about tuition fees, the prices are very reasonable. Of course, I'm taking a full 6 classes, 18 hours, so my tuition is high up there, which is why I'm trying so hard to apply for scholarships. My parents are pushing 70 years old (a good 20, 30 years old than most people I know's parents), so gaining a scholarship is very much helpful for a $5,000 a semester tuition. It's a bit pricey, but I can't help it... I'm trying to achieve so much.
What to do for fun There are different bars around the campus that are fun to go to that are 18 and up. Of course, they always ID you if you order a drink. There's always a club to go to called Shenanigans/Confetti's. It's an amazing way to socialize. I don't go to these bars and club much at all and have only been a few times my first couple of semesters, but from what I remember it was a fun experience. Not only going out is fun, but there's almost always something going on on campus during the day and even night. Food will be passed out and games will be played. A few months ago, there was a festival that was held that I attended and a couple of months ago, there were a lot of food and games to play the week before spring break. They even have famous people to come onto the campus which is really exciting!
Food and Dining There's a new building that just opened up that the buffet was relocated that is bigger and about two different on campus fast food building that has numerous fast foods inside, plus about five different other eateries in other buildings called Java City. Java City are in buildings like the library and the Criminal Justice building.
Dorm Life I never lived in a dorm, but I live in an on campus apartments. The dorm life in amazing. You can either decide whether you want to live on your own or live with a roommate. I decided to live with a roommate and every single one I was paired up with was an amazing experience to have. The apartment managers always paired me up with a person by how my residential profile looked like.
Academic Rigor They are very strict when it comes academic stance. When I say that every professor and adviser pushes you to excel in your studies, they really mean it. Every time you struggle, they keep pushing you to go to the professor's office and/or the tutoring center and when you have to even register for classes you have to go to your advisers every time.
Tips for prospective students I suggest to be very social and take advantage of the library! Huntsville is a small town, so all the students are very friendly when you talk to them. And the library is such a great place to check out books and use the computers for school work. They have every topic of books including numerous of textbooks if you decide not to buy or rent a book that is required for class. The library has four floors dedicated to them and even has a small eating area in the building to eat and study.
In three sentences Sam Houston is a very comfortable environment. Every professor and advisers push you to pass and excel in your studies. The one thing I especially love about this campus is that safety is the number one thing they stay on top of.

Categories Comments Campus Safety University police is always driving around so safety is not a big issue.
Greek Life The Greeks are fun and really friendly. They are always putting on different, free events.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs to join. You will definitely find one that suits you.
Great for these types of students Friendly, engaged, serious, likes to party but get work done
Bang for the buck Sam is a very affordable school and given the cost, you get way more than what you pay for. I can't stress enough on how beautiful the campus is.
What to do for fun Honestly, being that Huntsville is a small time, on weekends it is dead. During the week, students begin partying and going to the clubs on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The nearest mall is 45 minutes away in The Woodlands, Texas. It is very lavish. During the week though, our program council puts on very fun events.
Food and Dining The food is excellent. We are ranked as having one of the best dining services in America. At the end of the year though, meals begin to repeat their selves.
Dorm Life The freshmen dorms aren't all that bad. There are no community bathrooms but you do share a restroom with three other people. There are 2 people to a room but the bathroom separates you from your suit mates. Given that the freshmen dorms are older, there are sometimes problems with the AC but nothing too crucial. Upperclassmen dorms are lavish. Majority are fairly new and are being remodeled. The rooms consist of two people who share one bathroom.
Academic Rigor At Sam you will find that even though it is a party school, students strive to get their work done. The library is always filled and the computer labs are are always preoccupied. There are different resources available so any help that you need can be easily solved by either the staff or students.
Tips for prospective students If you are looking to attend Sam, make sure you are prepared to walk up and down hills everyday! Rain boots and umbrellas are a must especially during the fall semester and given that there are about 4 bookstores on campus and surrounding the campus, I strongly advise that you do text book comparing because some places are way cheaper than others.
In three sentences SHSU has a beautiful campus that I think people from all walks of life can appreciate. The people are friendly and the campus is very diverse. Activities are always going on, which helps keep the students engaged.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The old belvin was great. This new one that they just built, I'm not too sure about because I don't live on campus so do not eat there.
Dorm Life I loved it! I lived in sorority housing and it was great. All the sisters that got the chance to live in the house were closer than the ones living outside the house.
Academic Rigor The classes themselves are not too hard. It mostly depends on the professor you get and if they are willing to help out with the work. Also depends on if they intend to teach or just sit on their butts during lecture.
In three sentences Sam Houston State is a great college for first year students. The professors are willing to help make the translation from high school to college learning. Overall, beautiful campus and friendly people.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The fact that Huntsville is the prison town of Texas makes it have a lot of police. There is always a policeman around the corner if you can't see one. It is very safe!
Greek Life I never got into the Greek life.
Clubs and Activities XA or Chi Alpha is a must try, it is not a fraternity or sorority. It is a lot of fun, and everyone is made to feel welcome and can find a place there. If you cannot, all that is needed is to ask.
Great for these types of students It is probably the best Teacher College in the area (many teachers who have student teachers prefer to get them from Sam Houston because they are the best prepared).
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Old Main Pit is the site of the old music building now used for concerts, events, games, and relaxing. It is located on the top of hill. The football games are home of the couch potatoes where people bring their own couches and actually sit in the in-zone.
Bang for the buck I believe this is the least expensive 4 year college in Texas.
What to do for fun Since it is a smaller town most places close earlier than you would like, but there are inexpensive entertainments available in town such as $3-5 movie theatre, many city parks, national park, state park, and many museums. If you don't want to be in Huntsville there is a short drive on the highway to the younger and more college friendly town of The Woodlands and Houston.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good compared to a lot of other campus food places.
Dorm Life Depends which dorm you get into, but since it is a small campus even the not so nice dorms have their perks being in the middle off everything. Most of the nicer dorms are on the outskirts of the campus.
Academic Rigor There are some classes that are quite challenging due to a great professor, but just about all classes have at least one professor who is more lenient than others. (All though some courses only have one option, depending on the demand of the class).
Tips for prospective students Do your homework/projects/study for exams with some drive and you will get a passing grade. Make an effort to talk to at least one or two professors a semester and try to understand their life as a teacher. This may come in handy one day when you need a reference as well as make the class more interesting while you are taking it.
In three sentences Great smaller school with beautiful campus. High Professor/ low student ratio allows students more individual attention than the larger schools. Professors are genuinely interested in you as a person and a student and are willing to go the extra mile for you to do well as long as you also show effort on your part.

Categories Comments Campus Safety SHSU is ranked one of the top safest campuses in Texas. There are always campus police officers circling the campus and in the evening you can call the local campus security to escort you to wherever you need to go.
Greek Life There are four different councils at SHSU including NPC, NPHC, IFC, and MGC. There is a greek organization for everyone. All councils are involved with each others events and there a many friendly competitions between each other.
Clubs and Activities There are plenty of different types of clubs and organizations ranging from academic to athletic and everything in between.
Great for these types of students -Science, education, and criminal justice majors.
Bang for the buck SHSU is a very inexpensive university, but you still recieve a great education. There are many options offered to help students pay for college including student scholarships sponsored by SHSU and on campus jobs.
What to do for fun There are plenty of organizations on campus and free activities put on by program council every month.
Food and Dining The cafeteria Old Main Market has multiple food options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the facility is very clean.
Dorm Life All the dorms are very close to the center of SHSU. The academic buildings, library, and cafeteria are only a minute away by foot.
Academic Rigor SHSU has excellent professors but many only take test grades into account for yor final grade so study hard and do not get behind.
Tips for prospective students Apply early for classes and on campus housing. When it comes to parking it is very limited so find a parking early if you do not live on campus. Be prepared when it rains, since SHSU is on a hill there are places where areas tend to flood.
In three sentences Sam Houston State University is a diverse campus with many organizations; anything you are interested in Sam Houston State University has a organization for you. Categories Comments Food and Dining Sam Houston State University has a vast choice to feed hungry students throught the day. With resturants such as Burger King, Chick-fil-a, Subway and even a Starbucks, students need not worry about going hungry when they are on the run.
Dorm Life I live away from campus, but from what I can tell, the living quarters are a bit old, but maintained from what I can tell. I would say the droms are on par with other schools the same size as SHSU.
Academic Rigor I am just now at the end of my junior year at SHSU, and to date, my classes have been focused, well taught and challenging. I have enjoyed the quality of instruction, as well as the learning environment. With an average class size of around 40 students per class, interaction with professors has been easy and enlightening.

Great for these types of students All students all walks of life.
Bang for the buck Tuition runs about $1200 - 1500 a semester depending on how many classes you take and any additional fees for labs, etc. Very reasonable freshman to graduate level college.
What to do for fun There is so much to do if you just try to get involved. Intramurals, night life, and students groups are very popular here. I would just stay in college at SHSU forever if I could!
Food and Dining SHSU has a very nice campus atmosphere, an eco-friendly college environment. They offer a superior educational experience, with smaller teacher to student class sizes. The people and staff are friendly and willing to help you accomplish your educational goals Get connected and network with other students. Food and Dining Great selection of food. SHSU has its own dining facility as well as a variety of fast food restaurants available right on campus.
Dorm Life The apartment style dorms SHSU provides are some of the best places to live in. There is privacy, comfort, and plenty of space in these dorms.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I think the reason why the campus is so safe is because it's small. You can walk on campus, but you can't get into the dorms without a card. Everything is communicated so that students can feel safe. They even have a feature where is there is a situation, and the campus is on lock-down, you'll be notified in a number of ways: 1. The loud alarm that's hard to miss 2.On twitter 3. On Facebook 4. By text message.
Greek Life BORING.
Clubs and Activities I have yet to join a club or extracurricular. However, whenever I would be on campus, I'd see a lot of clubs inviting newcomers with welcoming arms. These people really have a lot of BEARKAT pride.
Great for these types of students -People who do not want to go to school with a large population. -People who want safety -People who like the small town setting -People who pay attention to the campus surroundings (it's BEAUTIFUL! Especially in the Fall)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The most unusual thing I've witnessed on campus so far is the mascot, whose name is Sammy. What is a BEARKAT? is it even a real animal?
Bang for the buck This college is great if you want the feel of a private school with a small population. Even though it's like a private school education, the price for attendance is affordable. Also, it doesn't hurt that it's one of the top schools in Texas.
What to do for fun I really wouldn't know, because I did not live on campus. My advice because it's such a small town, is to go to the sports games, have get togethers, and go out of town.,
Food and Dining Their cafeteria food isn't all that great, to be honest. I would recommend just eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. Or the occasional visit to your favorite eatery. They have a lot of restaurants on campus, that offer great food choices.
Dorm Life I have not been able to live on campus because I live too far away. However, I have visited my friend in one of the dorm buildings, and the way they had everything set up made me feel safe- such as being able to enter the dorm with your ID card.
Academic Rigor It's serious. If you do not get your assignments in on time, then that's you, as it should be in every college.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that if you know you cannot afford to live on campus, then GET A SUMMER JOB. Also, even if you cannot live on campus, and want to take online classes like I did, know one thing: if you like a classroom setting then you probably won't like it. If you enjoy learning by yourself, then go for it! Study hard, and do your best.
In three sentences Sam Houston is full of pride. The campus at SHSU is beautiful. The people at this school are very warm, friendly, and helpful.

Greek Life Greek life is interesting. A person can see or look up the background of each and how they were founded. It is important to get involved in the one that best defines you because those will be your brothers or sisters for life.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of clubs and activities to get involved in. It all depends on your interest and where you fit in. The best thing to do is look into the different organizations and see what they are about. Then choose the one that will make you happy.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is a real big deal here. They school provides escorts from the police station. It is helpful if you are like me study late at the library just call the station and they will send someone over to escort you back to your dorm.
Greek Life I am what the greek life calls a GDI. Although I do hang out with and study with a bunch of different greeks I do have to say that I wish I was financially able to rush, because these people are kind and polite, as well as, very studious.
What to do for fun If you are a church person there are multiple groups to join in on; for example, I go to Chi Alpha because I feel a special bond with in this particular group. There are also multiple activities on and off campus to have fun with.
Food and Dining The food here is pretty standard fast food ie. Chick-Fill-A, pizza hut, burger king, Starbucks, subway, & quiznoes; but, they do have dining facilities that provided healthier options as well.
Dorm Life I did not have a great roommate when living in the dorm, but that should not sway your opinion on living in the dorms. If you live in the dorms you can mostly guarantee that you have the quiet you need to study; also, depending on where you live you can be right next door to a number of classes. If you would like to know more people of your dorm I highly suggest living in a small house.
Academic Rigor Most courses can be easy a's but I like to challenge myself and I am the only junior I know that has taken senior level courses while being a sophomore; also, I have made a's in my major study classes.
Tips for prospective students If you put forth the effort to showing up to class, asking questions, talking to the professors one can pass. Put forth the effort to learn, read, and study the professors will know if you are trying or not.
In three sentences This school challenges me to do better everyday and put forth the effort to do the best I can each day. I love the campus and the staff here is amazing. The professors are incredible and are willing to help if you put forth the effort to learn.

Categories Comments Greek Life If you need a family away from home Greek life at Sam Houston State is one of most wonderful things. I am first generation college student and I needed a family away from home and deciding to be a part of Greek life was one the best decision I ever made. Plus Greek life is always working together to help out the community. either by cleaning up our city or donating money, food or needed stuff.
What to do for fun Huntsville is a small city but you could always go to the state national park, or visit the Sam Houston statue. If you are willing to drive you could also visit Houston, which is only an hour away.
Food and Dining At Sam Houston State we currently have a new food and dinning facility and it is great. The food is fresh and they have plenty of variations from which students can choose.
Dorm Life Dorm life at Sam Houston State is very safe. Nobody that it is not permitted can get inside the building. Plus the RA's take care of any disturbance. Also residents life is pretty good when it comes to paring roommates.
Academic Rigor If you do not study for a test or are not well prepared, yes it will be hard and you will fail. But if you take good notes, study with partners and ask questions before the test, the test will be very easy.
Tips for prospective students As a freshman in college I noticed that it is important for a student to have a strong communication with the professor. Always introduce your self and make sure that the professor knows who you are. Make sure as well that you sit in front of the classroom and attend class. Do not procrastinate.
In three sentences Sam Houston State University is one of the best Universities in Texas for Criminal Justice. Sam Houston State classes are not to big, so it helps the student to have a better communication with the professor. Sam Houston State Univ. offers the best services to help out students. Categories Comments Campus Safety Sam Houston is the home of the 3rd largest Criminal Justice program in the nation, so you can only imagine how amazing the campus security is. The campus is filled with security stations, which when activated, the campus police will be there within 5 minutes no matter what time it is. Police escorts are also available if for any reason you feel unsafe on campus.
Clubs and Activities I have to recommend intramural sports. Also, the non-denominational Christian group Chi Alpha is phenomenal. They meet every Thursday night and have contemporary worships that include live music and 3 pastors/youth ministers.
Great for these types of students All type of students can find a home here, however the more laid back you are, the better your experience here at Sam will be.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The best tradition here at Sam is the Battle of the Piney Woods. Our annual football game against Steven F. Austin University is held at Reliant Stadium, the home of the Houston Texans, every year! If you enjoy an intense football game, you won't find one better than this!
Bang for the buck Sam Houston is one of the cheaper 4-year institutions in Texas, however you won't lose out on anything by coming here. All of the great college activities can be found here, just a tad bit cheaper than a UT or Baylor.
What to do for fun I am involved in intramural flag football and club ultimate Frisbee. I also work out at the REC center regularly and occasionally play Frisbee golf in the park. There are activities for everyone at Sam Houston.
Food and Dining Sam Houston has just opened a state of the art dinning facility that is open to everyone. Any student can purchase a meal plan which allows eating to be very routine and convenient. There are also many restaurants on campus that allow for convenient meals in between classes.
Dorm Life New dorms are being build fast and furious all throughout Huntsville. In my experience, 1 year, the dorms had many activities to help residents become acquainted, and the living areas were well kept and very comfortable.
Academic Rigor The mainstream classes (all except the honors courses) have been taught by amazing professors in my experience, and they do a great job of applying a basic understanding at the beginning of the semester, and gradually building on top of it as the semester progresses.
Tips for prospective students The first and most stressed tip I can give is to become involved with an organization. The more groups you become active in, the more fun you will have and the better your experience will be.
In three sentences Sam Houston is a remarkably comfortable campus. The compact design makes the walks very minimal, yet very enjoyable. In addition, the faculty is immensely helpful and genuinely cares for their students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I always felt safe on campus. One night I went walking by myself, within an hour and a half nine cop cars passed me. The Criminal Justice center was near my dorm so there was always cops, campus and otherwise around. I never worried.
Clubs and Activities Clubs and Organizations are abound. They have everything from a Quidditch team to Banking and Finance Club.
Great for these types of students All.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We always have the lighting of the Christmas tree. It's a huge tree, several stories tall, where we light it just before we leave for Christmas break, there are candles and everything. Then the Battle of the Piney Woods is energetic and everyone has fun!
Bang for the buck The experience at Sam Houston, I believe was worth the cost. I have made some of the greatest friends there. You definitely get a great education and the school becomes a part of who you are.
What to do for fun You could go to a game, the gym or the pool. My personal favorite was walking around campus. It is so beautiful there.
Food and Dining The dining hall was great. They had good hours and they had reusable carryout trays. The service was always wonderful, the food was healthy but good. There were lots of options.
Dorm Life I loved living in a dorm. There was all kinds of different people living in the dorms. We always had some kind of activity going so we could meet new people.
Academic Rigor The professors will work with you, but you have to put in the time and effort. Attendance is key, if you miss a class, they won't give you the notes. You have to be responsible for your own work.
Tips for prospective students Don't freak out. There are plenty of people to talk to, to help you adjust. There are multiple clubs and organizations to get involved in.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Ranked 10th safest school in the nation! Yes we are right next to the high security prisons, but if you think about it...if an inmate escapes they are gonna get the heck out of Huntsville, either north to Dallas, south to Houston, or east to San Antonio or Galveston.
Greek Life I don't know much about the greek life, but they are really involved in the school and always putting on shows, doing charity events, and just saying hi to everyone on campus, especially in the middle of campus between 11:30am and 1pm.
Clubs and Activities There are so many things to get involved in on campus, there is a little bit of everything for everyone! I know it sounds cliche, but its totally true.
Great for these types of students great for small town and country people, if your from a big city you might think Huntsville is pretty boring.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are a lot of traditions around Sam Houston himself, birthday parades, fairs, museums, and parties thrown at different times of the year.
Bang for the buck The school itself is pretty cheap comparatively, but academically it doesn't reflect a cheap school. They are pretty on top of things all around.
What to do for fun There is a country bar that most students like to go dancing at. If that's not your kind of scene there are many many christian organizations that do tons of stuff during the week. Truth at UHBC on Tues, Kats For Christ on Wednes, Chi Alpha (XA) on Thurs. and those are just to name a few.
Food and Dining We just got a brand new dining hall, that slightly on the expensive side if you don't have a meal plan, but its all you can eat and 98% of the time really good! The dining hall staff are super friendly too!
Dorm Life the dorms are kinda old and need some repairs and deep cleaning, but there are a couple new dorms on campus that are super nice!
Academic Rigor the chemistry and math departments are pretty difficult, but its usually pretty easy to help help around campus
Tips for prospective students Its better to go to your actual teachers and department heads for advising than the student center. If you don't know what you want to do, the career center is a great place to help you figure it out and they are super friendly and helpful. And if you don't get at least one free meal a week on campus your not involved enough!
In three sentences SHSU is a great place to live, work, and of course get educated, the people are friendly. There are many people, places, clubs and organizations to get involved in. Most of the teachers are really passionate about their field and love to teach about it and help others love the field too.

Food and Dining Brand new. That is all I have to say. Beats most other small schools
Dorm Life I would rate it a 2.7. The dorms are quickly improving with the addition of a couple of new ones, and the renovation of others.
Academic Rigor I would rate it a 3.5. You have to go to class to pass, so go!
Tips for prospective students You need to join groups on campus. Be social. Don't go home one the weekends!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are 5 different precincts governing the Huntsville Area. University Police are always surveying campus and the surrounding areas. Emergency phones and call stations are all over campus and you can even make reservations for a University Policeman to walk you around at night on campus. KatSafe is a electronic emergency call center that texts, calls, and e-mails students and faculty when any kind of emergency arises.
Greek Life I am not a member in the Greek Life of SHSU but I do know that it is very common to be in a fraternity or sorority at Sam Houston.
Clubs and Activities There are all kinds of clubs at SHSU wishing to fill any desire or need of any student.
Great for these types of students Criminal Justice, Education, Agriculture.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The battle of the Piney Woods is an old school rivalry between SHSU and SFA that has been going on since the 1920's. Both schools compete in different athletic sports to try to win the Piney Woods Trophy. In 1982 the Old Main Building on the North side of campus burned down. This Building was a beautiful gothic style mansion, it was the first permanent building constructed by the state for teacher training. Now known as the Old Main Pit it hosts many social gatherings.
Bang for the buck SHSU's prices are very reasonable for a university of it's merit.
What to do for fun There are plenty of outdoor activities to do. The Huntsville State Park is only a couple of miles down the freeway with also many historical places and museums located in town. In Texas, the Prison Museum is a must-see and who can forget the 67 foot statue of General Sam Houston himself! Social eating places are on almost every street.
Food and Dining There is a pretty good selection of food around campus and many meal plan dining places to choose from. The places to eat around town are very diverse and will appeal to everyone.
Dorm Life The dorms are well maintained and security of its students is number one on the schools list.
Academic Rigor The professors are not meant to babysit you and expect an adult when coming to class and completing your work. You study on your own time and take care of business. College classes are not meant to be easy.
Tips for prospective students Do not procrastinate! Keep up with your studies and remember for every one hour you spend in class, you should be spending three hours studying for it. Also study a little bit each day instead of cramming everything from a month ago into one night. Your brain will thank you later.
In three sentences I love the atmosphere of this university. The people in the community and on campus are very nice. The professors are truly interested in their students.

Tips for prospective students Watch out for permit parking. Make sure you go through your checklist, because if you miss something registering is a pain. If you are attending their Woodlands Center, make sure you talk to that campus before registering.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There isn't much to do except going out. There are two clubs that are very popular, especially on Thursdays. Shenanigan's and The Jolly Fox. You have to be 18 to get in. Shenanigan's is a country club, where you two-step and the other side of it (Confettis) is a hip-hop club. The Jolly Fox has dancing, but it's mainly a bar. And hanging out at Target is something a lot of people do. Or they join a club or intramural sports. Going to the REC center was also really fun.
Food and Dining Old Main is really delicious. It has a lot of options for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was my favorite because they had an omelette station. The staff is really nice all the time. The best thing they ever had was sugar cookies. I ate six of those everytime they had them.
Dorm Life Some of the dorms are really nice, but then some of them aren't the nicest. I stayed in Belvin-Buchanan and it smelled like cat pee in the lobby. And the ground floor (where I stayed) has a cricket problem during the warmer months. It sucks. They get in your room and hide in things all the time. But the nicer ones are the newer ones. Go for those.
Academic Rigor Some of the classes are really easy, but then there are the ones that are fairly difficult. If you get the right teacher (make sure to check them out at ratemyprofessors.com) then your class with be mostly easy. Most of the professors are really nice and will help with anything. Nothing is too difficult for homework or studying either.
Tips for prospective students When you come to Sam, just make sure to pack rain boots, a rain coat, and an umbrella. Walking on campus when it's raining sucks. But other than that, the school is amazing.
In three sentences Sam Houston is an amazing school. The teachers are amazing, and so are the people. When you walk on campus, it's the most beautiful thing in the world.

Categories Comments Campus Safety At first glance, the large orange poles in parking lots and on sidewalks seem odd and out of place, but in actuality they can be life savers. Strategically placed all over campus and surrounding areas, there are large orange and blue security poles that dial directly to campus police when activated. These can be used for emergencies, car problems, or even if its late and you just need an escort to your dorm or car. Other safety precations SHSU takes are card entry dorms that lock as soon as the door has closed.
Great for these types of students Sam Houston is great for any student that wants or needs a tight knit, family-like community. Because SHSU is nestled into the small town of Huntsville, you definetly get the small town feeling, even when your surrounded by so many people.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus On campus, Sam Houston is home to some of the oldest education buildings in Texas. Due to a fire in the early 1980's, one of our original buldings was lost, but in the year since, we've made good use of where it once stood. The basemeant area of what we once called Old Main (est. 1889) is now known as the pit. Fall and Spring Rush events are held here along with tons of other activities. When activities arn't being held, its a great place to go sit and relax between classes, have lunch or take a nice nap.
Bang for the buck I personally feel like I'm getting an amazing education for an even more amazing price in comparison to other colleges in the state of Texas.
What to do for fun Campus is almost always buzzing with some sort of activity. If its not step shows on the square, its karaoke at the pit, or movie night in the student center. In the two years that I have been at Sam Houston I've taken place in multiple late night capture the flag tournaments, ultimate frisbee, snowball fights and sledding (with a snow machine of course), movie nights, film contests, plays, gingerbread house competitions, scavenger hunts, bonfires, light of the Christmas tree ceremonies, football games, and so much more. We've even had guest speakers such as Dan Rather and other Alumni.
Food and Dining Along with the addition of Lonestar residence hall, Old Main Market opened its doors for the 2011-2012 school year. All the food served by Old Main is provided by the Fresh Foods company, so Sam Houston is able to ensure safe, healthy food choices on campus. Beside Old Main Market, their are four more dining locations which house several eateries. Paw print is located in the heart of campus and houses a Quiznos, Burger King, and Chic-fil-a along with other random assortments of salads sandwiches and snacks. South Paw is at the South end of campus and houses a Starbucks, Tortilla Fresca, and Subway. We also have a Java City, and Einsteins Bagels on campus. Overall. dining experience on SHSU campus is fantastic and full of choices.
Dorm Life Dorm life at SHSU is anything but typical. I personally have stayed in two different dorms, both of which were a pleasant experience. This past 2011-2012 school year, we celebrated the opening of brand new, semi-private dorm by the name of Lonestar Hall. This makes 26 halls, houses and on-campus apartments available for students to choose from. Some perks of staying in a dorm are a sense of community and safe living, along with all of the fun activities that residence life sets up. These activities vary from volley ball tournaments to movie nights to haunted houses.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor set forth by Sam Houston is relatively high. Our programs such as Nursing, Performing Arts, Teaching and Criminal Justice require students to perform beyond normal standards to ensure that only those who can truly succeed have the Sam Houston seal of approval. The college of Business Administration also sets a high standard by requiring major specific classes be passed with higher letter grades. Also, our signature W.A.S.H. program for beginning art majors require students to produce over 100 projects and participate in 2 gallery shows per semester before starting major specific art classes.
Tips for prospective students One of the biggest tips I can provide for prospective students would be to be involved with anything on campus that catches your interest, if you don't or if you choose to get involved with things off campus, you can tend to lose sight of why your actually there, which is to better yourself academically and to develop a network for your future. Another tip would be to not be ashamed to want or need your parents. No one is too good to call their parents and vent.
In three sentences Sam Houston is one of the most friendly campus', where everyone treats you as family. The staff, administration and faculty go above and beyond what is asked of them to make sure their students are accommodated. Sam Houston provides a safe and at home feeling that other campus' lack.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I've had times where I've had to walk across campus at 5am to print out a paper from the computer lab, and wasn't scared at all. There are multiple safety buttons on campus to push if you feel unsafe, and there are also escorts to call if you really don't feel like you should be walking across campus alone. I have never felt more safe on a college campus.
Great for these types of students People with school spirit! We may be a small school, but we've got a lot of pride. Eat 'em up, Kats!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus My favorite place to study, or just relax is the water fountain in the mall area of campus. You can stick your feet in it on a hot day, or soak up some sun on a cooler day. Also, fun fact, whenever one of the teams on campus accomplishes something, such as our football team going to the championship last fall, they light up the main Sam statue orange!
What to do for fun Be creative! It's a small town, and a small campus. That's why it's so important to get involved on campus; so you have things to do! You can either sit in your dorm all day doing nothing but watch tv, or you can get out and be productive, and enjoy your time at Sam Houston :)
Food and Dining This past year, a new dining hall was opened for the campus, and it's extremely nice! All the food is cooked right in front of you, and you get multiple choices for food. The only problem is that if you don't have a meal plan, eating there can get expensive. We have 2 other places on campus to eat that have places like Burger King, Chick Fil A, Subway, Sushi, and Tortilla Fresca. It's over all nice, just a little pricey without a meal plan.
Dorm Life I loved my dorm there. I had a randomly selected roommate, and got extremely lucky since we ended up becoming good friends, and now have an apartment together with some other friends. My only regret in on-campus housing is that I didn't apply early enough to get one of the nicer dorms. There's no such thing as a bad dorm there, though. Just apply early!
Academic Rigor The professors are challenging, and you have to keep up. Unlike how you were always told in movies, or larger universities, most professors DO take attendance, and going to class is a big deal here. Don't skip! You'll regret it come test time.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! There are so many different organizations through the college, and it really can make your college experience so much better. Whether you like, football, comics, animals, music, or movies, there's something for you there. Find it, and get involved!
In three sentences I love being a student at Sam Houston. It's an extremely beautiful campus, the professors genuinely care about you, and you feel like you're really part of something great just by being on campus. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly, and the small-campus vibe is totally there.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck For the awesome programs they offer it will be worth it!
What to do for fun Im not really sure yet, I haven't exactly moved up there yet, but one this that was kinda cool was the game room under the bookstore!
Food and Dining The food is better than your high school cafeteria!! You have more options of what you want to eat, and the best part is it's different choices everyday so you won't get tired of the food.
Dorm Life Dorm life will not be easy staying with a stranger, but soon (according to my older sister) you will bearly be in your room because you'll be hanging with friends and going to class.
Academic Rigor The teachers care about your grades. And yes you have to go to class to pass!! The class sizes are generally small, so you get more one on one time with the teacher!
Tips for prospective students My advice would be just to be yourself, because you will meet the greatest friends ever!! Remember this isn't high school anymore, being yourself will get you further than pretending!
In three sentences Sam Houston was just a perfect fit for me. I couldn't have chosen a better school, it's close to home yet far enough where I didn't have to come home every day. The people there are super nice and really welcoming and I can't wait to get there in teh fall!

Categories Comments Campus Safety No college has perfect security, but I can guarantee that you couldn't be any safer if you tried. The campus police can be put on speed dial, there are always emergency posts for standby police/ambulance assistance, and we have a safety feature installed in our emails that can also be transferred to your cellphones if you want it.
Clubs and Activities You just need to know where to look. We have various recreational activities as well.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Well Sammy, our college mascot, is a bearkat - a hybrid animal of a bear and a wild cat. He does push ups for every touch down we gain at our games.
Bang for the buck The band for the buck quality is fair to say the least, but watch out for some of the competing stores near the campus. Some are cheaper, but some are outrageous as well.
What to do for fun There are various clubs and activities available. You just need to know where to look - mainly the flyers posted across campus.
Food and Dining New dining hall opened up. Better grab yourself a plate.
Dorm Life It takes some getting use to when it comes to living in a complex with various people, but like any college it's doable.
Academic Rigor The rigor suits the course.
Tips for prospective students Study hard, because the professors may want you best interest at heart, but that doesn't mean that it will be easy.
In three sentences Sam Houston State University is all that I have dreamed of. It is a prestigious college and all I've expected when it came down to my desired major. I couldn't be happier anywhere else.

I personally know some of the cops and they are the nicest people you will ever meet. Their first priority is to make sure the students attending Sam are safe and never feel like the campus is being threatoned. Sam has never had any kid of threat or shooting.
Great for these types of students Sam is great for outgoing people. There are alot of really fun and crazy people that attend SHSU and being loud and Bearkat proud is something the students pride themselves in. Its easy to fit in and make friends at Sam and if you have not come out of your shell yet then Sam is the place to be when you do.
What to do for fun Sam has a very sucessful Student Life program, they hold activities all the time that range from book readings to glow bowling, trips to the state park and opportunities to meet new people.
Food and Dining The food at SHSU is actually really good. They have a brand new cafe with all different kids of food. They also have a food court that is very diverse. They offere afforadable meal plans as well.
Dorm Life The dorms at Sam are alot of fun. There are many different doorm buildings but they are always full of out going and spunky people. The doorms all have fun hand out places where students can get together and talk, shoot pool, read, or just hang out for the night.
Academic Rigor The professors at Sam want each student to gain as much as they can during their experience at SHSU. They push each and every student to their full potential and always give them a new challenge, something different to strive for.
Tips for prospective students My tips would be to go see the campus, you will fall in love. All of the people that work for admissions and all other departments are truly dedicated to helping you find the right college and degree plan that best fits you. Do not be afraid to ask questions!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is extremely safe and the Sam Houston Police are always on duty.
Clubs and Activities There are many different types of activities and clubs to join, and they all are going to sound interesting.
What to do for fun There are many things to do at Sam and you will not have to ask that question once you get there because all the activities will come to you. There will be flyers and posting for different events that are going on on campus. Also if you stay active and join organizations you will not have to worry about what to do for fun.
Food and Dining The dining is buffet style for the most part, you get what you want and how much of it you would like. The food is great, when i went for orientation the breakfast was the best, the dinner was good, and also at the other places that they have on campus I heard that they are good to.
Dorm Life All the dorms are well equipped to be lived in and they are very clean, but the thing people have to take in prospective is that the closet space might not seem as big or there is not as much room. But none of the rooms are dirty and they are all great places to live if you want to stay on campus.
Academic Rigor Sam Houston wants every student on their campus to be successful by any means necessary. The can set up tutorials and different things of that sort to help you, and the library is open 24 hours if you need to go in and study for something.
Tips for prospective students Bring walking shoes and rain boots. Don't worry about material hings or if your hair is not curled right because at Sam no one really cares. Your education is what matters most to those at Sam, and of course interacting with others.
In three sentences Sam has beautiful scenery with a home like feel to it. There is always something for you to do, no matter what. The class are not as big so you will be able to connect with your professors.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are at least 3 different police units around Sam Houston and the campus police are always around. They are always available to help if you need their assistance.
Great for these types of students Self motivated, school spirited, family oriented and very community involved students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The town itself is pretty historical and there are a lot of events that revolve around SAM Houston.
Bang for the buck When choosing my college i was looking for a good education at a low price that was just as good as any other state school. Compared to other schools it is among the less pricey average tuition for 15 hours is about 3,000 not including dining and housing.
What to do for fun There is usually always something to do around campus, many parties and student organizations but make sure you are having safe fun because the police are always on patrol.
Food and Dining The food is great. There are many places on the campus to eat . If you are seeking fast food your best bet would be the lowman student center and if you like well prepared food in a clean environment you should head to main market where there are a variety of healthy choices.
Dorm Life If possible, try to get into the newer dorms because the older small house are small and cramped. Your best bet would be Sam Houston Village which was remodeled Summer 2012.
Academic Rigor Most of classes are fairly small whch makes it easier for you to learn. The teacher try to keep the class involved and provide as much information as possible on blackboard.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you keep a schedule of the work you have due and never lose focus of trying to attain the highest grade. Be sure to stick out to your professor and try to sit in the front of the classroom when available. Take the time out of your schedule to study because it is easy to get distracted.
In three sentences A very beautiful campus, the groundskeepers do an excellent job but beware of the crickets. The teacher are very helpful and try their best to make you feel comfortable. The area is very homely and the students will instantly make you feel welcomed.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Going to parties is too dangerous. There is too much temptation and too much to lose. Is something illegal happens, you could get punished by the school or law. Most importantly, your life would be in danger. Also, it is not safe to walk around campus by yourself at night. Sam is a big campus and it gets really dark in the winter time around 6 pm. (I had a class in the late evening). Thankfully, there seems to be a lot of policemen around.
What to do for fun I think that hanging out with your friends between classes or getting something to eat together is the best way to have fun on campus.
Food and Dining The Old Main Market (cafeteria) has good and ok days when it comes to the taste and quality of the food. The workers are really friendly. There are a lot of fast food places on campus. Some are good and others ok.
Dorm Life Your enjoyment of your dorm will depend on your RA, roommate, and dorm building. Make sure to follow all of the rules, guidelines, and procedures when it comes to moving in and out each semester. When leaving for Winter break or coming back for the spring semester, be responsible and make a checklist of things to do and clean if necessary. Because if you forget to do something, then you WILL be charged.
Academic Rigor The courses will be challenging but (in my experience) most professors are understanding. However, if a professor says that you need to read the textbook for the class, they're not kidding. You really do need to read the book.
Tips for prospective students Sign up for fafsa early. Inquire the financial aid office about grants very early. Fill out an application for scholarships within SHSU early. If you want specific classes and teachers, register for classes early.
In three sentences SHSU is a beautiful campus. It has professors who are passionate about there subject. They have a lot of great programs such as there Education and Criminal Justice programs.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The Dining and food that is accessible to Sam Houston State University is top notch for the students. It may be all fast food, but when you're on the go, jetting around campus, fast food will be a God's-send.
Dorm Life Living in a dorm can have its pros and cons. The pros are that you get to meet new people and have a great time on campus. The cons would be something such as being away from home.
Academic Rigor The Academic rigor is not as difficult as many claim it to be. Academics can be as challenging, or as difficult, as you make it to be.
Tips for prospective students My tips for prospective students is to try as best as you can to put yourself out into the community. Doing this will allow yourself to be known and possibly gain scholarships.
In three sentences I believe Sam Houston State University is a great school which offers a broad spectrum of majors to apply yourself to. The university has a colorful and amazing campus, as well as the people in the community. Being in Huntsville, the campus is a nice and relaxed place to be.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very Secure, to enter any building one has to slide your ID Card in which is basically everything you need to have to move from class to class or even your dorm. There are even fines for blocking your door! Each student must enter to a room, close door and wait for the other student to open it. A very well done measure of security.
Clubs and Activities Two words: A LOT.
Bang for the buck Another great option In why I choose Sam Houston State University if because of its affordable price since it lets me have the right financial Aid with the minimum price per-class and book selection!
What to do for fun There are a huge quantity of activities at Sam Houston State University including sports not so common such as Quidditch, yes, the Harry Potter sport in where the goal is to score to the opposite side while riding a broom and Frisbee, dodge ball, and a combination between intramural sports, extracurricular activities, voluntary service and events that only at Sam Houston University can offer you!
Food and Dining Another Five star rate to the food since this University counts with a special Dining program in where the student can go to a state-of-the-Art cuisine in where he can choose like in a buffet any type of food he wants ranging from the fruit all the way to pasta, pizza, salad, and a very huge diversity.
Dorm Life Dorm life is a luxury in Sam Houston State University, with a very good space, the student can feel free to prepare himself for any test, exam, or homework with the maximum security and accessibility that the University can offer

Categories Comments What to do for fun Huntsville is a small town so there's not much to do there, but the school offers more than enough sports, events, and outings to keep you busy. Plus, if you decide to live off campus many of the apartment complexes also host events for students. (My place has a basketball and volleyball competition)
Food and Dining They've just completed a brand new dining facility that offers freshly made meats, pastas, breakfast and fruits. They also have the typical food chains like Chick-fil-a, Wendy's, Subway, etc.
Dorm Life I am staying off campus, but I've heard that they've just built some very good dorms in the Lone Star Hall and Cougar Village.
Academic Rigor As long as you show up to class and do your homework you will be fine. The teachers are more than willing to help if you are falling behind. In fact, academic counseling is required if your GPA is too low.
Tips for prospective students Apply for housing early, all the good places fill up quick. Same thing with scholarships. There are plenty to go around, but you have to apply early and often.

Categories Comments Food and Dining Does not apply to my educational goals, but I'm sure that the University accommodates a variety of dining experiences. Including food choices that will fit any dietary requirements needed. But when I go to campus, I will check out the food and dining experience while I'm there.
Dorm Life Does not apply to my educational goals seeing that I have a huge family at home. It sometimes feels that my home is a dorm for my adult children. But, if I had to do it all over again, I would have finished school when I was younger.
Academic Rigor This is my first year as a student at Sam. But I believe that there are rules and guidelines that everyone should follow. I can update later on the academic rigor of the university.
In three sentences Sam Houston University has been very helpful in answering any and all questions that I've had in regards to registration, admissions, and financial aid assistants. The helpful professionals at Sam Houston University helped to relieve the stress of actually deciding what classes to take in order for me to achieve my career goals. Also, if you are an online student, the school will send you text messages about dangers in your area, such as hurricanes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is extremely safe because the University Police Department is always on duty and available if you need them. I can walk home from work on campus to my dorm when it is dark because I am confident in the safety of our campus.
Clubs and Activities There are so many different and fun organizations to join for every kind of person such as campus ministry, sports, and even clubs related to your major. Everyone has a different personality and enjoys different things and Sam Houston offers an opportunity for every student to be able to do what they love and meet others with the same passion as well. I have had the blessing of being able to join organizations that were best fit for me and have enjoyed getting to know others who I can relate to as well. There are also very many fun activities and events that Sam Houston has going on throughout the year such as Sammy Palooza. Sammy Palooza is a big event with a lot of free food, free music, free t-shirts, and so much more free stuff as well as the event itself. How could it get any better than free?
Bang for the buck Sam Houston was definitely worth the price. I have definitely enjoyed going to a smaller university and still being able to have the college experience of being away from home. Sam Houston has so many different opportunities to be able to have an enjoyable college experience as well as being able to achieve your future success.
What to do for fun There are many different things you can do for fun here in Huntsville. Sam Houston usually has a great number of fun free events for college students to attend such as football games, Sammy Palooza, and much more. There are also your usual get together places such as restaurants, a movie theater, a bowling alley, the park, and the great outdoors. You can always find a number of things to do and being spontaneous and discovering the town is also a lot of fun as well.
Food and Dining The food was absolutely delicious here! I was a freshman last year so I got to experience my first time with Sam Houston's new dining hall Old Main Market. There were so many different choices whether it was the salad bar, a sandwich, or a variety of different foods the cooks were making. If you wanted a break from Old Main, there is also many food chain restaurants such as Chickfila, Burger King, Subway, Quiznos, and much more. You have so many different and wonderful choices to choose from!
Dorm Life Living in the dorms your freshman year is one of the best living and learning experiences you could have. You get the wonderful opportunity to be able to meet a lot of new people who are starting a new chapter in your life just like you are. Itâ??s also really nice that simply going to do your laundry or walking down the hallway or sitting in your dorm lobby, you can get to know a number of people. The dorms also host fun social events at least once a month so that youâ??ll get to know everyone that lives on the same building as you. The resident assistants are also very helpful because they are upperclassmen and have very wise advice that will help you. They want to guide you into a successful future and are always just a couple doors away. It is also very convenient living on campus because you can walk to your classes in a very efficient time frame. It is very nice that you donâ??t have to get in your car and drive to school every day because it saves time and money!
Academic Rigor The academics here at Sam Houston are very excellent. It's wonderful that your goal is definitely achievable. It is not always extremely easy but challenges help you learn and grow. And you will not have to do it alone because all the professors are extremely helpful. They always are open to helping a student succeed in their class. They offer tutoring and have office hours and various ways to contact them if you need the extra help.
Tips for prospective students My suggestion is to come into school with a positive attitude and expect great things. Great things can come in little packages so I advise to enjoy and cherish every single little thing and moment. Be friendly and don't be afraid to approach other people because they are just as nervous as you are. Get involved with organizations that you enjoy doing and the many events and opportunities that Sam Houston has to offer because it is a great way to meet tons of people. Definitely seek help and guidance from an upperclassmen who has made mistakes that they wish they knew before entering school. Keep yourself disciplined with your studies, once you work hard, then you can play hard and the all the studying will pay off once you get your grades back and even for your far future when you are able to pursue your dreams. And finally the most important thing is perseverance. Do not give up no matter what because practice makes perfect. Once you keep going, you will see your results improving so never lose hope.
In three sentences Sam Houston State University is a very inviting campus because the moment I stepped foot on this campus I was welcomed to many opportunities to help me exceed in my future. The school is extremely encouraging and every faculty member and peer push you to achieve your goals. Everyone wants to be a part of helping you obtain a successful and life-changing future.

What to do for fun Huntsville is small and there is not much to do. There are two dance clubs and a few bars. Hang with friends or go to Sam Houston State National Park a few miles away.
Food and Dining I love the cafeteria food and I don't even live on campus anymore. I believe it is too expensive to purchase single meals, but with a meal plan the cafeteria is a great choice! The other fast food dining services are wonderful and South Paw is the BEST for ANYONE!
Dorm Life I loved living on campus freshman year. You are only required to live on campus first year, but I know several people who stayed longer. It is nice being walking distance from class and being close to friends.
Academic Rigor Depending on who you take and your own work ethic will determine who hard Sam Houston will be for you. Sam Houston can challenge you and be a great experience if you're up to the task.
Tips for prospective students Do something you love, don't let money drive your future. Money will come when passion drives.
In three sentences Sam Houston is a wonderful university! The quality of education is top notch and the diverse student body is great for learning about the world! Sam Houston has some of the best educators that really love their jobs and teaching students eager to learn.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are lots of Emergency Contact towers around campus - just press the button and the authorities are contacted. These towers are also lit up by a blue-green light at night, so finding one is never hard.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Right across the street from the Campus Visitor Center is a gorgeous park. The park has a lovely duck pond, tons of huge trees to keep you cool when you're there, and lots of historical buildings - the park is actually Sam Houston's original homestead!
Bang for the buck As a college student, it's natural to want to save as much money as possible. There are lots of places around town to eat at that offer special deals on certain days, and I know of 5 different (big) grocery stores within 5 mile radius of the school, so you can take your pick.
What to do for fun There are two well-known clubs in town - you'll hear more from the students about those.
Food and Dining Although it can get tedious eating the same things, there are many different cafeterias around campus to choose from - all within walking distance. My favorite is the Sushi in the Southpaw dining area. Go check it out!
Dorm Life So much fun! It's really easy to make friends, since everyone else is just as lonesome as you are. So don't worry about finding friends - they'll find you!
Academic Rigor The difficulty of your classes vary depending on your major. Just stick with your passion, and if things get tough, seek help like tutoring.
Tips for prospective students Get involved - make as many friends as possible, and create/join as many study groups as possible. Sometimes having a peer explain something to you makes the concept much more clear.
In three sentences A beautifully small and connected University! Many events are hosted year round to make students feel more welcome here. Classes are small, and teachers care about you on a personal level.

Food and Dining The food is great Every day they serve different kinds of foods for everyone to enjoy.
Dorm Life Dorms are very comfy here, but i do think that they could be better. Some are not as nice as other colleges, but they are not the worst.
Academic Rigor The teachers here are very nice, but require you to do their work and stay on top of things, so that you learn all the material you need to.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you apply to a dorm early. Have all your financial aid ready, as well as making sure that you're all set to live on your own.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never seen so many patrols and police officers in one place before. There are cops everywhere and are very cautious. I feel extremely safe in this university. If you even need a little help with feeling more secure, you could have an escort walk with you on campus at night if you want to be sure it's safe.
Greek Life I do not know much about Greek Life but I have talked to some of these fraternities and they have told us all about how they would help us improve ourselves in school and how much they would benefit us.
Clubs and Activities So far I have decided on joining five different organizations. Criminal Justice's Lambda Alpha Epsilon, Minority Male Initiative, Martial Arts Hapkido, Chess Club, and Soccer Club. There are much more organizations and clubs here on campus but these are some of the ones that interests me. I love that there is so much varitey and choice here at Sam.
Great for these types of students Sam Houston is great for Criminal Justice students because we are ranked one of the top ten school in the nation with a great Criminal Justice program. Sam Houston is great for students who are friendly and outgoing; making friends here was an easy task. Overall Sam Houston is great for ALL students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One amazing tradition that I would love to talk about it Bearkat Camp. I attended freshman camp and I had an amazing time. I met many new friends, learned a lot about the unviersity, and was taught all about spirit, pride, and tradition.
Bang for the buck Sam Houston is proving to challenging financially to me but I am doing all I can to try to complete my education because it is worth it. Not only do I have a lot of fun here, but I am also trying to get the most out of Sam's Criminal Justice program.
What to do for fun Some of the things I do for fun are play soccer with friends, go to the gym, hang out, and attend many of Sam Houston's events. There are lots of things to here at Sam, too many if I may add, that sometimes I get upset about not being able to go to all of them due to school work, or other things that clash with the time; but I'm not down for long cause Sam always has something planned.
Food and Dining The food here is amazing. At Old Main Market, Sam's main dining place, they have a wide variety of food whether it's breakfast or lunch. There are also lots of great places on campus to eat such as Subway, Burger King, Pizza Hut, and others.
Dorm Life Dorm life is very expensive but it is still great. If you get along with your roommate, it makes it even better. Right now, I have absolutely no problems with my roommate and are very talkative and sure about how to live together and use our dorm without any confrontations.
Academic Rigor Here academics is very important. The professors are extremely nice and helpful when needed. Also many organizations are out there in case you need a little extra push such as tutoring.
Tips for prospective students Some helpful tips would be to be outgoing and talkative. Everyone is friendly and is sure to talk back to you. Also, procrastination is not acceptable here because getting your work done first means not having to stress out about it last minute and having more time for fun at the end. Another great tip would be to sit in the first three rows; this gives the professor the oppurtunity to get to know you better and gives you the oppurtunity to pay more attention in class.
In three sentences Sam Houston State University is an amazing university that has done wonders for me. The professors are very nice and helpful and everyone in the university is extremely friendly as well. I have only been here for about a week but this has been one of the best weeks ever as I have met tons of new friends, met with old ones, and had lots of fun here at Sam Houston State,

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus My unsual location and events is that their are students dancing in the plaza with our Sam Wildkat outside every time after we win a game.
Bang for the buck Sam is not an expensive school unless you know what your doing and know what classes your taking and makes easier if you have a job.
What to do for fun I joined the Kappa Gamma and the Kats Club organizations in which you perform community service in huntsville and raise money for school. I also paint and draw when I have the chance and go to the mall for relaxion from home and school.

Bang for the buck College is expansive, but the experience and knowledge is definitely worth it.
What to do for fun As previously stated, there are tons of fun clubs to join. Many people like to go out at night and there ares several hot spots such as the Jolly Fox (more of a sit down bar) or Shennanigans which is a combination of country in one room and hip hop in the next.
Food and Dining Tons of restaurants to chose from and what's on campus is pretty good too.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty active and very friendly, but if you hope for a quite place to relax you'll have no trouble finding that too!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Sam Houston State has been ranked many times as being one of the safest campus in Texas and the nation. UPD is always around and we even have an escort service available so just in case you are out late one night somewhere and you don't want to walk alone to your dorm they will be there to escort you safely home.
Greek Life The Greek life here is good. Everyone there is very open to anyone who wants to join and they always have something for other students to do on campus. They host many events and they are an all around good time.
Clubs and Activities There are hundreds of different organizations on campus that each have something different and unique to bring to the campus.
Great for these types of students Criminal Justice majors, creative/artsy people, nursing majors
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of the biggest traditions on campus is around Christmas time, when students gather around to light the huge Christmas tree in the court yard.
Bang for the buck You get a really good education for about half the price of other colleges.
What to do for fun Even though the school is located in a small town like Huntsville, there is a lot of things to do. There are many organizations on campus that always have something for you to do. There is also small places to go to in town if you don't want to stay on campus. By getting involved in something I can guarantee that you will never get bored.
Food and Dining The food here is good. There is always a variety of choices and you will definitely find something that you like no matter how picky you are.
Dorm Life Dorm life is a lot better than I thought it would be. I've met a lot of great people this way and in a way y'all become like a small family that takes care of each other.
Academic Rigor There are some easy classes but there are also those hard classes that every school has. It all just depends on which professor you have and your overall major.
Tips for prospective students Keep an open mind! College is a completely different experience and attending a relatively small school like Sam Houston State you will see a lot of things and do a lot of different things you may not be used too but all in all you will have a good time here no matter what.
In three sentences If you're looking for a super friendly environment, then Sam Houston State is the school you should go to. Everyone is super supportive and friendly. Clubs and Activities There is always some club to join or activiy to do around campus. It is very entertaining to see all the options students have.
Great for these types of students Study aboraders, astronomy, Criminal Justice
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Sam Houston actually has an observarotry off campus and it is used for their astronomy program but it is really cool. They also have a planeterium which only a few Texas campus' have.
What to do for fun Sam Houston has so many things you can do for fun! They have sporting event to go watch. They have intermural sports. They put on pep rallies for all the big games. They are have sorioties and fraternities you can join. There are dance teams and cheer teams. You have the Jolly Fox and Shennigans if you like going out dancing. And there is almost always a party somewhere.
Food and Dining SHSU has mulitple different places you can eat on campus and it is great. You have a lot of different options
Dorm Life I don't actually live in a dorm at Sam but I do see them everyday and they have some really nice dorms and then they have some really sketchy dorms.
Academic Rigor Sam has it's programs that are really hard but at the same time if you are responsible and study you will do fine. They do have a really hard astronomy program but I am fully convinced that it pays off.
Tips for prospective students Make sure SHSU is the right school for your major. Sam has multiple areas where it has great reputation and there are some programs that it is lacking. Aside from that it was a wonderful school and if you want to study abroad I highly recommend this school
In three sentences Sam is a great school! I love their astronomy program. They have put a lot of money in making it a great program. Categories Comments Campus Safety There are police everywhere here. Huntsville is surrounded by prisons, which sounds scary but it really is a safe place to be. We are a criminal justice school so there is a great sense of safety here.
Greek Life Greek Life is very avid here, and it is relatively cheaper than greek life at other schools. There are only 4 Panhellenic Sororities here, ZTA, AXO, ADPi, and TriSig. There are a greater number of fraternities, and multicultural frats/sororiites.
Clubs and Activities There are a ton of student organizations here, you really just have to know people to find them. The student org website is bad at putting out information.
Great for these types of students Perfect school for commuter students. Students from small towns would fit in better here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Of course we wear orange on Fridays, you will even get a prize if certain people see you wearing orange on Friday.
Bang for the buck Sam Houston is significantly cheaper than other universities, and it really does go far. There are always student activities going on, free fear, etc.
What to do for fun There is not a lot of fun things to do in Huntsville. We have a movie theatre that is very cheap, and there is the rec center which has a rock wall. Everyone goes to the country dance bar Shenanigins on Tuesdays and Thursdays, that is about the funnest thing there is to do here.
Food and Dining Old Main is the only cafeteria we have on campus. Most of the time the food is good, and it does not really feel like a cafeteria. The downside is lines, and hours of operation are inconvenient. There are two food courts with various fast food restaurants that you can use you bearkat bucks at.
Dorm Life All of the dorms at Sam are in good shape, and are not too small. You can pay more money to live in apartment style dorms, that are nicer and have kitchenettes. I live in an old residence hall and I love it here.
Academic Rigor Classes are small here, so there is a lot of possibility for one-on-one help. Typical freshman classes are easy, and some do not even have midterms. This makes the classes almost feel like high school courses.
Tips for prospective students Sam Houston is lively on the weekdays but it is dead on the weekends. If you're looking for a place that really feels like home away from home you might no get that here.
In three sentences Sam Houston is a great place for people from small towns around the area. It's predominantly a school for Criminal Justice and Education majors.

Bang for the buck SHSU seems pricey, but it's still one of the most inexpensive colleges in Texas.
Food and Dining Old Main Market (the cafeteria) is okay, but there's fast food at the student center too.
Dorm Life Currently living in a dorm that was closed last year for renovations and it's the biggest dorm on campus. People are nice, but don't be surprised when a car alarm goes off at 3 in the morning.
Academic Rigor Just like any college, some classes are hard and some classes are easy. It's all about personal preference and who the professor is.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to sign up for classes as soon as you can because classes fill up quickly!

I find myself going to movies alot with my new friends and we always have a great time in groups. We also just enjoy each others company at our respective living spaces and always find a good time together.
Food and Dining There are always new and different types of food avaliable at Old Main where students can socialize and greet each other while enjoying some food and entertainment. The LSC is also a great place to meet with friends and get a variety of food from public vendors as well. I find the workers and cashiers very friendly and communitive
Dorm Life I get along with a dormmate as we respect eachother's space and privacy. The dorms are kept clean and safe for students. mY dorm advisor has also been generous with his time on the new students.
Academic Rigor They have new and inivative programs that assit the student in the curriculum and assignments. The professors are very patient with the student and explain the context if there is difficulity. I find the work enriching and helps me understand the course better
Tips for prospective students It is an adjustment from home. If you haven't before, you should get use to sharing space with someone new. Also make sure to keep your work and assignments in place, becuase they can get out of hand real quick.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You may think that because the school is right next to a prison that we are always in danger. We aren't. There are students that are apart of a safety patrol and they walk around the campus at night time to make sure everyone is safe at all times.
Greek Life I am not in a Greek organization but they do look promising if you wish to join. They put on step shows and will step on the courtyard frequently and they are pretty active in communities.
Clubs and Activities I am not involved in any clubs but they do put on events that I've been to that have sparked my interest. The activities that go on, however, are extremely fun. There are plays, bonfires, pep rallies, fashion shows, parades, etc. And the football games are always fun.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There aren't any unusual traditions that I can think of. Nothing that you wouldn't see on a normal campus.
Bang for the buck Tuition is always a hassle. I'm glad I came to Sam Houston but others may not be as glad as I am. Everybody jokes about paying so much to attend here, but making things worth the money is all up to you. Only you can waste your money.
What to do for fun There are TOO MANY things that you can do for fun. Join a club, work out, join club sports, intramural sports, etc. Find things that appeal to you and your interests and you'll easily find a niche for yourself.
Food and Dining There's a nice variety of things to choose from on campus and even off campus. The cafeteria that everyone eats at, Old Main, tends to have those off days but most of the time you will find at least one thing that you like in there.
Dorm Life The earlier you apply for acceptance, the better dorm you will receive. Make sure you choose a roommate that has similar habits as you do, otherwise problems will be in your near future. Others weren't as lucky as I was.
Academic Rigor The difficulty of the classes all depends on the teachers most of the time. If you put forth zero effort, then things will be harder than the teachers intend them to be.
Tips for prospective students I encourage prospective students to look into Sam Houston for more than just the education. The experiences you have outside of the classroom are just as significant as the ones inside of them.
In three sentences Sam Houston is a very friendly community. The teachers try their hardest to make sure you get specifically what you came for. Everyday is another learning experience, one way or another.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We live by a prison, and we get emails or text if anything bad happens.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We had a bonfire before out homecoming game. There was a haunted house on halloween.
Bang for the buck It is fairly cheap around here. We have three dollar movies, and things to do on campus are not too expensive.
What to do for fun My friends and I play volleyball at Sonic every Tuesday, and different people come each week. There are many different sporting events o go to. You can join an intramural team, or go to the rec center and work out in various ways. There are of course sororities and fraternities, but they also have religious groups, leadership groups, and many other different clubs. There are many different dancing halls to go to. We live in a small town, so we go to Walmart half the time and mess around in the toy section.
Food and Dining Up until last week the food at our dining place was relatively good. We have quite an assortment of food during the week. It is unlikely though, you will find fresh vegetables or any milk on Saturday or Sunday. Last Monday i had to miss class after getting sick from eating breakfast at the dining hall. I was scared to eat there again until last night. I felt fine after eating the food.
Dorm Life I live in an all girls dorm that sometimes seems like the building is falling apart. The first two months we had an infestation of crickets. The room itself looks extremely beaten up. They ran out of rooms, so some rooms have three people instead of two. There are plenty of activities to do with the people in your dorm, so you can get to know each other.
Academic Rigor Some teachers will give a lot of help to their students to help them succeed and receive better grades.
Tips for prospective students When your teachers give you an assignment, try to get it done that day. Do not study on your bed, unless you plan on falling asleep. Stay on campus to study and do your work. Get involved in different organizations.
In three sentences This school has an enormous amount of opportunities to meet people and become a part of an organization that can help you later in life. This school is not a large school, but it is large enough for students to feel a part of something that was bigger than high school. Sam Houston is not my home, but it makes me feel like I am close to being home.

Greek Life Greek Life is into everything here at Sam Houston, I know that they do things for their own organization but they also hold fundraisers to raise money for awareness in a lot of different things. They hold biweekly blood drives and are very nice about it.
What to do for fun If you want to have fun like on the weekends then go to Sorority Hill around 7 or 8 o'clock and find out what party they are hosting. If you don't like the party atmosphere then there is always the gym, the local park off of Sam Avenue, and at Hastings which is our local bookstore they have something going on every weekend.
Food and Dining The food here is awesome! Apart from the Paw Print ans South Paw which has restaurants in them like Subway and Pizza Hut and Chick-fil-A. We have Old Main Market which is a cafeteria buffet like style of a dining hall. We have chefs recipes and everything is seasoned and cooked to a T. I love going to Old Main Market its always fresh food and very good food!
Dorm Life Dorm life is different for all the dorms here. I'm living at Lone Star Hall and everyday there are people playing ping pong and playing pool, or they are just sitting on the couch chilling with friends watching TV. The dorm overall is very quiet at times but when Lone Star is holding an event in the lobby it gets real loud and fun real fast. But overall Lone Star is a great hall to be in.
Academic Rigor Your professors are there for you whenever you need help. We have free tutors on campus that will help you with what ever subject you are struggling in. Also you must study there is NO way to pass your classes if you don't study. Time management is the key to having a load of classes. Ex. 18 credit hours The rigor is much more than that in high school you must read and you must do things in order to pass not just to get by. Don't wait till the night something is due to do it.

Great for these types of students Like small towns

Bang for the buck With the right group of friends, this is a great place to be.
What to do for fun Sam Houston has a great gym and classes the gym offers. It is a great place to go to meet people. There is a wide variety of clubs to join on campus. Huntsville is the location of a huge state park. If you are of age huntsville provides many bars to go and socialize at.
Food and Dining Sam Houston has just recently built a new dining facility. It is very nice, clean, and modern. The facility has many choices of things to eat. There is a salad bar, international section, home cooking section, cereal section, and dessert section. Overall it is a great place to eat if you have a meal plan. There are also other places to eat on campus.
Dorm Life Sam Houston has many dorms to choose form. Some of the dorms are old and have been there for a long time. Those dorms also have old furniture in them which makes it feel a little dirty. Then again, there are new dorms that are very nice and clean. The newer dorms have more privacy than the old ones. Most freshman go home during the weekends which makes it hard for people who stay during the weekend.
Academic Rigor Sam Houston is not one of the hardest colleges out there. Although, it is college, so classes are going to be challenging. There is a wide variety classes and professors to choose from. They have free tutoring for most classes which is a huge help.

Bang for the buck It's great! Sam is one of the cheaper universities in Texas, but that doesn't hinder the education you receive.
What to do for fun Go to games, students usually get in free! I've heard Shenanigans is fun, but I've never been. There's a sand volleyball court at the Sonic on Sam Houston Avenue. There's always something going on for fun.
Food and Dining Old Main is the new dining hall on campus and the food is always pretty good there. They have a bunch of different stations, so there's always going to be something you might like. There are also a couple of other dining places on campus that are great.
Dorm Life I've been in two of the dorms, Lone Star Hall and Sam Houston Village. They're both really nice, but I personally like SHV better because you get your own room. There's a kitchen and a living room. There are common areas in all the dorms, with games and tv.
Academic Rigor I know a lot of people think that college is a place to have fun and not worry about classes, but at Sam, classes aren't really something you have to worry about. The professors are really good at making things interesting; they do like for you to show up and pay attention in class. But if you're there and you pay attention, then it's going to pay off, because you'll do well in the class.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you get started early on everything - applying, turning in the FAFSA, signing up for other scholarships.

Clubs and Activities Very wide range of activities and clubs. Any club you decide to be in, they will welcome you with open arms and never take advantage of you or your year.
What to do for fun Go out to the hill, bring a blanket and your laptop and watch a movie. If you have a sweet tooth and not much money to spend, there's a frozen yogurt place called Three Spoons that won't burn a hole in your pocket but will hit the spot in your stomach for the night.
Dorm Life The dorm I live in is relatively quiet and conveniently placed right next to the dining hall. The other girls in the dorm are friendly and our RA is always on top of her game with everything that happens on our floor.

Categories Comments Campus Safety All the buildings have a key card access, so keep your card on you at all times. When threats come in, they lock the buildings down. They will also send e-mail to the student body informing them of what's happened or going to be happening.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The LSC and the waterfountain area are HUGE hang out areas during the lunch hours. Honestly I avoid the food areas between 11-2, it is crazy busy. South Paw usually is not that bad as long as you catch it at the half hour versus the hour mark. That where I grab my lunches and snacks.
What to do for fun There is a movie theater, a few strip malls, and a couple of bars that are awesome to go out and dance or have a few with friends after a stressful week. It's a small scale community, not a lot to be distracted with, but just enough.
Food and Dining Food and dining, it is hit or miss just like any regular cafeteria. The food purcahse with the Bearkat Bucks is great and has a range of choices, even special treats such as coffee.
Dorm Life Dorm life is awesome. There are individual activities, group activites. The RA is always within reach, no matter which dorm. My preference would be the smaller dorms, they are more home like.
Academic Rigor Be prepared to think outside of the box yet inside of the box at the same time. The material is current, always changing, and almost everything could have several answers.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of the study skills and MAP programs. Do not wait until it is too late to seek academic help, even if you think you can handle it.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is extremely safe but if you every feel like you don''t want to walk to your dorm or car alone at night there is a number to call and campus security will send an escort to walk with you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Im not sure if any of our traditions are unusual but every year there is the Homecoming parade, Tree Lighting Ceremony around Christmas, a huge bonfire before the football game against our biggest rivals.
Bang for the buck Tuition for SHSU isn't as much as many other universities and with what you are paying they always try to give back. At the beginning of every fall semester there is Sammypalooza where they bring in bands and artists to perform and it is free of charge! They also bring in a comedian in the spring and tickets for that are also free for students.
What to do for fun On campus there is a place called the Kat Klub where you can go blow off steam and have some fun. There are video games, pool tables, ping pong, air hockey, foosball, and sports projected on the walls all day long. It isn't free but the prices are unbeatable compared to anywhere else in town.
Food and Dining The new dining hall at SHSU is amazing! There are 7 different stations with all different types of food like italian, stir fry, dessert, salad bar, comfort foods, and more. You will never eat the same thing within a month because the menu is so broad, and also very tasty.
Dorm Life I went in to the dorms expecting to hate it, but in the end I realized it was the best thing that could have happened to me. I met great friends, and for those who aren't extremely outgoing the dorms will make it easier for you to do the same. Being around all of those other students pushed me to go have fun at activities without worrying about having to go alone.
Academic Rigor Just like any university you will have classes that challenge you more academically than others. If you are struggling all of the professors are willing to help do what it takes so that you pass the class. You will have to put in the work but in the end you will gain so much more knowledge than you first realized.
Tips for prospective students If you plan to attend SHSU you will have to live in the dorms your first year, but don't look at this as a bad thing. Embrace the experience and do everything offered to you on campus because I made some of my best friends from the dorm I lived in. Get in groups and do volunteer activities or join a club, branch out, and you could make ties that last a lifetime.
In three sentences In the last 2 years I have spent at SHSU I have had nothing short of an amazing college experience. There are always activities to participate in, no matter what your interests, and it is the universities goal to put students first. I have yet to come across a professor I didn't like, and have been able to reach out to some of them to write recommendations for me.

Food and Dining The dining has improved vastly over the last few years. There's no fear of cafeteria poisoning here.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are many activities, organizations and groups on campus to meet everybody's needs. So whether you are interested in sports, games or reading there is a group of people who share your compassion.
Food and Dining Recently, Sam Houston built a new dining hall, and the dining experience definitely improved. The new dining hall is more focused on eating healthy. However, the food is very much overpriced.
Dorm Life There are many different quality dorms on campus, so the experience is variable. I would not rate them very high because the dorms in which I have had experience were not the quality that I would expect from a building in which I am supposed to live for a year or more.
Academic Rigor The amount of course work and the strictness of the classes are typically what is expected of a college campus. There are some hard concepts but the professors will do everything possible to ensure the students are able to learn the material.
Tips for prospective students Do not hesitate to ask questions, many professors are looking for the participation and the feedback. All students are also encouraged to get involved in one of the many opportunities Sam Houston has to offer. There is no better way to meet people than to share an interest in some activity.
In three sentences Sam Houston is an amazing college with an amazing staff. The classrooms are small, enabling the professors to help each student and individualize the classroom experience. The professors are also more than willing to meet with the students after class for any additional assistance they may require.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very safe. There are stations to meet security, too, if you want a ride back to your location of choice. (for late night, etc) But I have NEVER encountered any issues with safety.
Clubs and Activities Each department seems to have SOMETHING...
Great for these types of students very diverse, Lots of young students from high school, but also, older and return students like myself. I fit right in! no feelings of awkwardness :) Also can take online right alongside typical classroom setting at same time.
Bang for the buck I LOVE walking through the campus....It has an overall good feeling here for me. :)
What to do for fun There is a REC center, lots of groups to be a part of, History all through the town, to learn about. shops, sports and outdoor fun right on the campus...Theater, Music events. local businesses to check out. Stores, etc.
Food and Dining Love the dining choices...just wish there were a few more, and perhaps another cafeteria on the opposite side of the campus. Or perhaps closer set ups by all the apartments.
Dorm Life I commute, but from those I know, They like the housing here. Lots of great apartments, and lots to choose from. I only know of one story, where there was an issue of a roomate breaking the rules, and it wasn't really taken care of. A friend of mine--ended up moving out herself, conflict with this roommate was never resolved. but I know of others who really liked their dorm.
Academic Rigor I am learning so much, very passionate about what I am studying, and feel very much that I am in the right place! Professors are very encouraging to me! The University has a top notch teaching program!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Being so close to prisons I feel it's almost better. Lots of campus cops, escorts to walk with you home after late classes, emergency poles every so often across campus and awareness groups for all topics.
Greek Life Not the best, they do have it but anyone can join so what's the point.
Clubs and Activities The Greek life is mocked because of its artificial feeling, lots of religious activities and groups, all sport clubs and intramural teams, and lots of school trips over breaks through clubs like hiking, camping, skiing..
Great for these types of students Students that like small towns, plenty of religious group options, students that like the backwoods feeling and can have fun at small town carnivals or bonfires.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus After 1 oclock the campus is dead, everyone is usually at one of the closest bar & grills like Humphreys or Draft Bar.
Bang for the buck Very price effective school, tuition is relatively low and they offer great scholarship and financial help options.
What to do for fun You're going to have to make friends to find things to do, there isn't much going on around Huntsville. Tuesdays, Thursday are when everyone goes to Shenanigans or the Fox for drink specials.
Food and Dining There are a lot of options at Sam, 2 seperate food courts, plenty of coffee shops, cyber spots with cafes and stores, and POD convenient stores in many buildings on campus.
Dorm Life Dorm life is the best way to make new friends, close relationships start in the dorms.

Tips for prospective students Make sure to tour the school during a semester, the afternoons and weekends are always dead.
