Great for these types of students

Anyone! If there is anyone out there who likes encouragement come to Mesa! If you prefer to work through school yourself, come to Mesa! If you love great weather, people and professors, come to Mesa!

    Tips for prospective students

On-line classes are terrific if one does not want to leave to house to study, plus if one owns a laptop one can study on-the-go!

    Bang for the buck

Currently the cost is $26 dollars per unit, but Mesa offers a wide range of Financial Aid for those who qualify. With or without financial aid one receives help from incredible counselors who help one throughout one's academic career.

    Am enjoying being here

I love Mesa college!!! I have taken both on-campus and on-line courses; both are wonderful. I can honestly say I have learned a great deal in the short time I have attended Mesa college.

    Am learning a lot

The professors here at Mesa are amazing!!! The professors and students alike are very helpful here. Academics are a major aspect of this college. If you want to go to a college where the students are friendly, the professors strict but helpful, many clubs and groups to choose from Mesa is it. Plus the weather is magnificent all year long!.

Great for these types of students

Just about anyone who wants to work towards an AA or get their General Education done and transfer to a 4 year and not have to pay at lot of your General Education.

    Tips for prospective students

Online colleges are great if you have a tight day and if you work full time like myself. If you go on campus, be sure to get there a bit early because parking can sometimes be limited. Overall the college is huge so you'll do a bit of walking.

    Bang for the buck

Its community college, if you do not want to spend the high cost of what a 4 year college and private colleges make you pay stick with a community college. Mesa is a part of the San Diego Community Colleges (City and Miramar are the other two). At the time of this post $26 per credit for local CA residents is a great deal to get your GE done and go for an AA and then transfer to a 4 year.

    Am enjoying being here

I'm just doing online classes to get some of my General education done so I can transfer to a fully online college and obtain my BS in Computer Science degree.

    Am learning a lot

I currently took C++ and C# programming classes from Mesa online, and I did learn a lot about programming and how bad I am at programming. But at the same time the teachers and students were helpful throughout the class.

Great for these types of students

Good college for students who want to stay focused to transfer, or to get their life back on track and go back to school. Overall a good foundation for anyone trying to either get on or stay on an educated track.

    Tips for prospective students

Campus can be a bit confusing, but for the most part it's packed tight together once you get familiar with it. Don't risk parking close to the school because you will never get to class on time. Park at the first open spot you come across and sacrifice the walk. Check ratemyprofessors.com before choosing classes, most but not all professors at Mesa are appealing.

    Bang for the buck

Budget cuts made for students to spike up their unit fees which means we're paying more for less education. However, seeing as that is inevitable anywhere you try to attend school, Mesa does a fine job justifying its fees by providing you with some teachers that actually enjoy their profession and give you more than just a lesson in the course.

    Am enjoying being here

The area surrounding San Diego Mesa College is known as Clairemont or more specifically Linda Vista. It's a rather lower, middle class urban part of San Diego which explains why parts of the campus are so old and outdated but due to modernizing of the school, much of that is changing. It's at best, a decent campus. The demographics is somewhat varied. Not too much school spirit, but after all- it is a community college.

    Am learning a lot

As far as community colleges in the greater San Diego area go, San Diego Mesa College is by far one of the better ones to attend. The range from the choice of classes to quality of professors, Mesa has much more to offer than any of the other San Diego District Community Colleges (which include Miramar, Mesa, and City). I would know, I've attended all three. Mesa even supersedes the other districts such as Grossmont and Southwestern. Even through the budget cuts and all the financial decreases in the past year, Mesa seems to be upholding their standards of actually giving a decent education, as best as it gets for community that is.

    Campus Safety

the campus is extremely safe. i haven't heard any stories about anything bad happening since i have been there.

Great for these types of students

if you are thinking about going into architecture, make sure you are extremely dedicated and enjoy it because you will spend most of your student life in front of a desk drafting and sitting in front of a computer designing.

    Bang for the buck

the bookstore on campus has everything you may need. it is the best when you don't have to leave campus to buy materials for school.

    What to do for fun

definitely join a sport! i had the best time on the swim team. it was a great and fun experience. i enjoyed having athletic goals and academic goals, you maintain a healthy balance between the two.

    Food and Dining

students love the on campus cafe in the cafeteria. they have several food stands, ranging from soups, pizza, sandwiches, to mexican and american food. i personally always bring my lunch.

    Dorm Life

    does not apply

    Academic Rigor

there will be some classes easier than others. but i have had a few that were very challenging and required lots of dedicated studying time outside of school. don't give up and face the challenge.

    Tips for prospective students

make sure you begin an education plan with a counselor as soon as you get started. and make sure to meet withy a counselor almost every semester to make sure you are on the right track.

    In three sentences

mesa college has a great architectural program. the teachers are there to guide you and help you succeed. the campus also has everything a student needs from the library, to sports and even a secret cafe.

    Bang for the buck

I think for how much money you spend its a pretty good school.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms at this college.

    Tips for prospective students

Parking is horrible so expect to get there an hour or so early for the first month. The food is okay but I like to bring my lunch.

    In three sentences

Mesa College has great professors. They care about their students. The campus will look great when the construction is done.

    Campus Safety

It is very safe on Mesa College campus. The campus isn't too big so even at night I'm not very concerned. There are areas where you press a button to get a police officer to accommodate you and there are many police officers patrolling at night time.

    Greek Life

There are Greek organizations on campus, I am just not very familiar with them.

    Clubs and Activities

There's a Student Affairs or Students Association at Mesa and there are also some clubs. I kind of wish there was more. But there are many activities like fairs and booths throughout the year; music and free stuff and food, which is always fun.

    Food and Dining

Because of the location of the school, there are many nearby restaurants that in a very close proximity to the school. You have Convoy, Clairemont Mesa, Balboa Ave, Fashion Valley, Mission Valley, and even Linda Vista is nearby. There is a cafeteria at the school, they sell snacks in the bookstore, there is a Cafe in the Library, and another student store that sells sandwiches and other snacks in food inside. Also down the street is K Sandwiches, which is yummy and very affordable!

    Dorm Life

There is no dorm life here; it is a community college. But there are surrounding neighborhoods that are quiet and many apartment complexes nearby. You are in between Convoy where there are a bunch of Asian markets and restaurants and right next to Mission Valley and Fashion Valley.

    Academic Rigor

In any course you take, no matter what school; you MUST attend class, do your work, and study to pass the class! Of course there will be classes that are much easier than others, but there are classes here that can kick your butt if you don't put in work! Don't underestimate this school just because it's a community college. Most of the professors here have PhD's so don't underestimate your professors intelligence either.

    Tips for prospective students

Once the schedule for the upcoming semester is up, plan your schedule! So when it's time for you to register you can simply add the classes that you already planned rather than looking at that time. Classes fill up FAST; you don't want to miss your chance!

Great for these types of students

Great for every type of student! lots od diversity here.

    Tips for prospective students

Make lots of friends because no one is going to walk up and introduce themselves to your. Very isolated school.

    Bang for the buck

In-state is really affordable but a little over priced for out of state.

    Did enjoy being here

Not that many school wide activities to participate.

    Did learn a lot

The level of the classes is extremely important. There is a large difference between lower level and higher level classes.

Great for these types of students

    self-motivated, diverse, friendly people :)

    Tips for prospective students

Just because you aren't living on campus like other peers at full-on universities, does not mean you shouldn't be social. Be open to new experiences and get involved!

    Bang for the buck

Despite recent raise in attendance cost(s), a community college is still going to get you more for your money. It is a wonderful way to save money while you are deciding what your next step will be & still get a good education in the meantime.

    Am enjoying being here

Interesting array of cultural and artistic classes. When classes are available that cater to your interests, you meet other people with similar interests along the way. It's great!

    Am learning a lot

If you are motivated enough to learn, with a good professor (like the ones at Mesa) you can truly learn. Don't expect to be spoonfed, but everyone has been very tolerable and understanding in many different situations. Being able to know your professor almost personally, and be known by your first name is a great bonus to smaller classes.

Great for these types of students

San Diego Mesa College is a great school for students who want to get their feet wet on what to expect at the university level. If you are going into the allied health profession, SD Mesa College offers many classes that will give you great preperation.

    Tips for prospective students

Always review the syllabus that is given on the first day of class so you can get a head start on learning the material. Reviewing the chapters before lecture always helps. If you are waitlisted for a class, always show up early on the first day of class. Most of the time professors will allow you to add the class as long as there are available seats in the classroom.

    Bang for the buck

The amount per unit that students have to pay is affordable. I highly suggest not purchasing textbooks from the bookstore because they are over priced. It is cheaper to buy books at Amazon. SD Mesa College does offer the option to rent textbooks for certain classes, which is another option if you do not want to purchas a textbook.

    Am enjoying being here

San Diego Mesa College is in a convenient location and not too far away from any place in San Diego. The campus is clean and the buildings are organized in a manner which allows students to find there way around easily.

    Am learning a lot

San Diego Mesa College offers a diverse spectra of classes with professors who are highly educated in their field of study. The way the classes are taught allow students to get an in depth knowledge of the subject.

    Campus Safety

The campus feels pretty safe, although I would be a little more alert during the night, especially if you are alone or are a woman. Just better to be vigilant no matter where you are at night, I suppose!

    Greek Life

As far as I am aware, there is no Greek Life fraternities on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

I feel there are several ways to participate in college activities on- and off-campus. There are several clubs and organizations you may join.

Great for these types of students

Great for students with a strong desire to actually do well in classes and learn a lot. Not great for people who are just going out of necessity/boredom/credits.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I do not know any unusual traditions or campus locations.

    Bang for the buck

I would say that if you follow vigorously your teacher's lesson plan and actively participate, then you can glean so much more information than if you sit through class and argue with the teaching. There is information to be learned at a great monetary value, it is whether you use this to your advantage or not that makes the difference.

    What to do for fun

Walking around the main plaza by the cafeteria, there is often an event taking place. Sitting on the lawn between classes under a tree and relaxing is great, especially if you nap and take lunch.

    Food and Dining

The food is decent, although more on the pricey side. If you are trying to save money, there are a few decent cheaper menu items, including tacos, muffins, and snacks.

    Dorm Life

As far as I am aware, there is no dormitory for Mesa College.

    Academic Rigor

The lessons can sometimes require a lot of reading, which, when having several classes, can be a bit stressful. You will learn a lot if you keep up.

    Tips for prospective students

If you concentrate on the lesson plan, ask questions and participate in class, and do the assigned reading, then you will not only do well in class, but you will actually learn and master the course! There are a few ways to eat cheap in the cafeteria—try the carne asado tacos! There are several good teachers, and several not-so-good teachers. Do not hesitate to switch classes because of your teacher.

    In three sentences

San Diego Mesa College offers decent classes with many great teachers. You may have to walk up hills and stairs to reach your classes, as the campus is spread out. The night classes are generally a little more relaxed and less crowded.

Get there super early if you need to park. Ask people which professors were good, because many of them actually also teach at UCSD, SDSU or USD and use the same curriculum.

    In three sentences

Intimate class sizes provide lots of one on one interaction with your professors. There's lots of variety in dates and times for classes, so anyone can make it fit their schedule. Parking is terrible, but it is within walking distance of many places to eat and hang out.

There are varying events throughout each semester that provide a small break from the rigors of your classes. The Honors society puts on an ice cream social. Food and Dining

As far as a community college goes the food is what you would expect. They have basic cafeteria food, as well as sushi, pizza, and a sandwich counter. There is also a culinary student cafeteria where you can choose from a short list of daily entrees.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor is challenging but fair. Professors expect a certain quality of thought and work, but they are also thorough in their explanations of the subject material and explicit about their expectations.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure and utilize the resources provided to you by the school. The counseling department, tutoring center, transfer center (if you plan on transferring), financial aid office, and library (or as its called here Learning Resources Center, LRC) should be used to their fullest extent. Even though this is a commuter school, spend time on campus taking advantage of workshops and resources.

    Bang for the buck

If you're a California resident attending any community college is going to be the cheapest option for getting much-needed general education units out of the way. Mesa offers many financial aid options for all students and the financial aid office staff are helpful.

    What to do for fun

Mesa is a bit disconnected from off-campus activities so if you find yourself on campus all day I recommend checking out the art building from time-to-time; there are galleries every once in a while displaying student work. I also recommend getting involved in an on-campus club if you have a lot of time to spare; there are some great clubs that meet at many different times.

    Food and Dining

There is a cafeteria and a couple other cafes on campus. They aren't bad; however, there isn't much variety.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms at Mesa College.

    Academic Rigor

As it's a community college the classes are all lower division; however, many of the professors teach or have taught at four-year universities and they bring that pace of learning into their classes. Mesa is a great place to prepare for whatever school you're working on transferring out to!

    Tips for prospective students

If you're torn between Mesa and other community colleges in San Diego try taking a class or two at Mesa at least; it may not be for everyone, but it's good for a serious student just trying to cut costs by going to community college first.

    In three sentences

Mesa is a great place to get general education credits out of the way and to discover academic interests. Much of its faculty have taught at or simultaneously teach at schools like SDSU, UCSD, and USD which makes them really helpful for answering questions about transferring. The school also has a wide variety of extracurriculars to get involved in which will look really good for anyone planning to transfer out.

There is really nothing to do ON campus, but nearby there is the Balboa park and SDSU area is not far from here.

    Academic Rigor

The professors vary just like any other university. Just make sure you keep up and ask any questions that you have!

    Tips for prospective students

Everything is pretty much straight forward and face value for this school. If you want to apply for Work Study, make sure you do it by April! PARKING IS A PAIN!!!!! There is just simply not enough parking for all of the students. If you drive to class and have a class from 8-2pm, leave at least an hour early. And make sure you buy a parking pass, temporary ones can get pretty pricey.

    In three sentences

Easily navigated campus, as well as great staff to work with. I love that this school takes time to communicate (email, in class, etc.) with their students in order to keep them updated on deadlines, opportunities, etc. While I attended this school, there was construction which made some things a little harder.

For fun, I guess PE class is fun. Honestly, this campus is full of students who have work right after classes get out so not many people linger around campus or are involved in any school clubs, etc.

    Food and Dining

This is where most of the students are when people actually hangout on campus while not in class. I myself have never eaten at any of the places but they always look clean and with the amount of students always there the food must be decent.

    Dorm Life

There is none. Everyone lives off campus because it is a community college.

    Academic Rigor

I would say it is average here. Effort is what is important for teachers and if your grade is declining they will help you out with understanding their testing ways etc.

    Tips for prospective students

Give yourself sufficient enough time to find parking because it can be a nightmare. Also, take advantage of the library books for rent to save money on buying books for your classes.

    Clubs and Activities

There are decent amount of clubs and activities. Personally I have not taken the time and recognize myself into these two resources because of work and prior arrangements. But overall there are clubs and activities such as the school's athletic department.

Great for these types of students

High school graduates, sometimes students won't get into the school they want to get into, and also people that need some time off from school and just keep in contact with school because they have a job they need to pursue and little time for school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are a few locations that i believe are unusual. Our campus is a smoke free campus as they say, but there is this parking lot that smokers go to everyday to get their intake of what they need. I understand it but sometimes people have to do what they have to do.

Everything Mesa offers and the new state of the art classrooms are worth going to Mesa for. It is not even an expensive school. Although, the campus bookstore can sell very overpriced books there are other alternatives to buy textbooks.

    What to do for fun

There are always plays and showcases that the theater department holds that are free to the students on campus. There are also art exhibitions that you could attend. They also have a fun information day on campus which usually is the first week of the semester. If you are into college football, the Olympians have games in the Fall semester that students can go to and cheer for. If you like Boba Tea there is this great place called K-Sandwiches which is just a short walk from the campus.

    Food and Dining

I do not go to the cafeteria on campus because it is loud and the food is kind of overpriced for student expenditures. There is a Starbucks but there is a set menu and does not offer what regular Starbucks' offer. It is best to save money and bring snacks from home.

    Dorm Life

I will rate one-star because there is no dorm rooms on the Mesa campus because it is a two-year college.

    Academic Rigor

If you never miss a class then classes will be very easy. The work that the professors assign are pretty straight forward. Speaking up in an in-class discussion is always good!

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to your counselor at the beginning and end of every semester to keep track of the courses you are taking. To save money rent your textbooks online from Chegg or Campus Books Rentals. Attend all the transfer events, if possible. Try to be involved with the Associated Student Government. Join a club and that way you can network more. Stay on your game with school schedule and make appropriate time for work or personal life.

I love Mesa College because of the helpful staff and faculty that leave no student behind. Mesa has a good counseling program, relationships with other colleges and universities, and has a great social atmosphere.

When selecting classes be sure you check where they are located because Mesa is on hill and to walk from the bottom to the top side of the campus, you might not make it there in 15 minutes. Check out the newly built facilities.

There is a great selection of course requirement classes to choose from. The college is under construction parking and walking is a tiny bit difficult. The book store prices are a bit unusually high.

San Diego Mesa College is great community college for a person who just graduated high school or a person that is going back to school after many years. It is a community college so you don't really get the college experience as many young students want but education wise, I find it to be perfect. The staff is helpful and the counselors definitely do their job. The professors I have had, have been the best (Thanks to RateMyProffessor.com). This school is overall a great choice! but parking is TERRIBLE at the beginning of each semester. I have had students in my classes from University of San Diego (USD) that prefer to take some classes at Mesa rather than their own school because 1.It's cheaper 2.They prefer some of the professors at Mesa over the ones at USD. 3. Some classes the students want are not offered at USD but offered at mesa
