Great for these types of students

This college is great for ALL types of students. Who ever you are, you fit it. Santa Barbara City College wants you, and we know you want it to.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Visit the campus. If you need to go to community college, whether it be for financial issues or low grades, it will be your first choice. 2. Remember, college is easy to do, you just need the will, and Santa Barbara City College is here to do that for you. 3. The school has an open admissions policy, so apply when you can and know that it is there for you. You can go, you can get good grades, you can afford it, and you can make your dreams come true.

    Bang for the buck

Being a community/city college, Santa Barbara City College is much cheaper than a university or state school, but you receive all the same benefits. From EOPS to the MESA center, book grants and scholarships are given out to those in need. SBCC resides at the University of California, Santa Barbara's old campus and so the students are blessed with the real college feel at the community college price.

    Am enjoying being here

Whether you are from San Francisco, Orange Country or even out-of-state or -country, you will feel welcome here. With State Street directly south and the infamous Isla Vista to your north, you should never run out of something to do. Going out to the movies or out with your friends is always an option, but having the scenery is what always takes everyones breath away. Located right on the beach, tanning, surfing, and reading on the sand is highly encouraged to relax after studying. Palm trees, beautiful weather, and an amazing variety of life will allow you to never see the same thing twice.

    Am learning a lot

From On-Campus Tutoring in every subject you will be taught to Volunteer Tutors through the Phi Theta Honor Society, you will have no reason to ever get less than a B. The school's Gateway Program will ensure you a gateway to success with tutors also inside your classroom as well as in the Gateway Center from 9-5 everyday of the week. The teachers are immaculate when it comes to their teaching and down-to-earth when it comes to understanding you.

Great for these types of students

SBCC is great for all types of students! They welcome anyone and everyone! However, I would especially recommend SBCC to those who may need a more one on one learning environment because the class sizes are much smaller, plus they offer special services for the learning disabled. It's also really good for those students looking to save some money on tuition.

    Tips for prospective students

To all prospective students, I would definitely recommend attending Santa Barbara City College. A lot of people have a negative connotation associated with a community college. They think it's where people go who can't get in to better schools. Well, that is false! I am proof of that. I got in to UCSB and Cal Poly SLO right out of high school. But I chose to attend SBCC first because I knew that I would be saving money, and receiving an equally, if not better, education! Santa Barbara City College has so much to offer its students.

    Bang for the buck

SBCC definitely gives you more bang for your buck. The units are so cheap compared to what you will pay elsewhere, and the classes are just as good, if not better! I would say they are better, because you're getting smaller class sizes which helps you fully learn the material. Plus, the teachers actually care about their students and want to see you succeed. Honestly, you will do better in classes at community college, and you are paying less. So you are paying less money, to do better in school, than you would if you were to take the same classes at a 4 year university. Honestly, I was going to transfer after two years, but i've decided to stay an extra year, take some of the classes I would have been taking at UCSB, here at SBCC instead, because they will cost me less and I know I will be more successful in them here. Then I can transfer with more classes completed and have to spend less time and money at the UC.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE SBCC! The campus is amazing, its right on the ocean. The view is amazing! They offer really cool classes if you have time to take some electives. The professors are great, so intelligent and helpful.

    Am learning a lot

The professors at SBCC are excellent! The class sizes are much smaller than those at a 4 year university, so the class settings are more intimate. Your professors are more willing to work with you individually to make sure you really understand what you are learning. At a university, the professors don't have time to do this because they have way too many students. At SBCC the classes will really prepare you for a 4 year college, if you choose to attend one, and you really learn and comprehend the material presented.

Great for these types of students

Santa Barbara City College is great for any type of student. The over achievers because they have gate classes, students who don't know what they want to major in or career because you can just take all general classes and then decide in a year or two, etc. I would recommend SBCC to anyone.

    Tips for prospective students

My trip for prospective students is to make sure you don't over work yourself and sign up for like 12-18 units because when it becomes to much it will bring down you GPA if you can't handle it. Along with using the tutor center if you need help with anything or especially if you need help with an essay because by going you could probably bring your grade up by a full letter. Just make sure to take advantage of all the opportunities that SBCC has to offer.

    Bang for the buck

SBCC is really a good school if you are thinking about saving some money. The units are pretty reasonable for a college but the books are the ones that will eat your money, ranging from $40-$280 per book, depending on your classes. But even with the cost of books its pretty good because you could get into EOPS program which they will cover all of your books if you qualify for financial aid and be enrolled in 12 units. Along with the BOG which will cover the cost of units.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoy attending such a beautiful community college. The scenery is just lovely and between classes you can eat one of the many cafes overlooking the beach or bring your surf board along and take in a few rides.

    Am learning a lot

SBCC's class rooms are about 40 students which makes it very easy to get time with your professors. I am learning a lot here especially in my English 110 class which includes college essay research skills.

    Greek Life

The Greek life is great. I'm not part of it right now. but when I was in it was great.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs at SBCC. The ones that I'm attending are EOPS and TAP. These two clubs do trips all around U.S.

Great for these types of students

SBCC is for everyone. You will find all kinds of people. There is people from all around the world.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

At the end of each semester the music department throws a big concert for the students and it gets epic!. Each club at SBCC has its own traditions.

    Bang for the buck

Mmm well, money in this college is pretty high. So i recommend you get some savings to your bank, or ask for a loan.

    What to do for fun

Sometimes when I want to distract myself I go near by the edge of the campus and just admire the view of the ocean.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria has a great variety of food, but its always repetitive. They have great snacks and sandwiches.

    Dorm Life

I have not experienced dorm life. Some of my friends says that its pretty awesome. And its also a little bit expensive.

    Academic Rigor

Santa Barbara City College is very challenging, but if you get help from tutor it will be easy. Do not give up.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep on track with homework. Study the necessary hours needed. And the most important have the necessary rest time.

Great for these types of students

All students are great for this school. I have had fresh out of high school kids in my classes all the way to disabled war veterans. This school works for anybody.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know the school, the teachers, and the services. The student health care system is free, don't be afraid to use it even if you have a small cold, the nurses are great there. Teachers are awesome, communicate with them. I see a lot of my teachers even outside of class, they are all great people. There are also lots of student clubs. So I guess what I am trying to say is, just get involved.

    Bang for the buck

Is this even a question? First of all it is a community college, so it is a lot cheaper than a lot of other schools. Plus the services you get is absolutely great. With tuition you get a bus pass, student health care, counseling, on-campus tutoring and a lot more. Not to mention it's right on the beach, which creates a great ocean feeling every day. A lot of people I have talked to, including myself, feel that a lot of the teachers are over qualified making the learning experience great.

    Am enjoying being here

As for an enjoyable school, you can't get any better than SBCC. For one, the school campus is amazing. It has wonderful lush hills, awesome water fountains, and an amazing view of the ocean and mountain sides. Practically all of the teachers are student friendly and awesome! There is also a wide variety of student vibes, so your more than likely to find a good fit of peers. This school is very enjoyable.

    Am learning a lot

This is an absolutely great school. From student life to academic life the school is excellent. SBCC has a wide variety of classes all of which teach important life long skills. The teachers here are great and want you to succeed. Most of the teachers have their Ph.D's and are really fun to be around even outside of class. Within the past two years of being here I have learned a great deal.

One of the traditions that SBCC has is that every year there is a concert made by the music classes. Its a relly apic time. There are also restaurants next to the college of sea food. In addition there are not many colleges that have a really beautiful view of the beach and mountains.

    Bang for the buck

Classes used to be cheap, until now that the classes are a little expenses but they are worth. The food is okay with that price and the materials that are required for the classes are also okay. However, SBCC help you to get grand for book and many others.

    Bang for the buck

santa barbara has a variety of stores to shop from. from the most expensive to the person who needs to budget. shopping offers a variety of style and labels to please any shopper in santa barbara. the malls are beautiful and pleasant offering other activities of dining, movies, and entertainment. local restaurants also offer amazing food at great prices.

    What to do for fun

most often the fund in santa barbara begins with walks on the beach, roller blading, or riding a bike along the boardwalk. the beautiful paths by the beach offer amazing views for photography, especially the magnificent sunsets on the pacific coast. my specialty is photographing flowers. there are more flower species in the santa barbara area than any other place in the united states. other than my personal time of fun, it's shared with family and friends at fun places like the santa barbara zoo.

    Food and Dining

santa barbara is known for it's fine dining and food international food choices. there are more restaurants per thousands of residence than most small cities. i call it a city, although locals consider santa barbara having a small town feel where it's not unlikely that you would see someone you know in one of the restaurants and dining patios on the streets of santa barbara. most often dining is accented with great music from local artists. a romantic city visited every weekend from neighboring cities and tourists. being a seaport like city, the bay is also visited by tourist cruisers. this is a wonderful city to visit for food and dining, especially during the many festivities offered throughout the year.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is not an activity i'm familiar with. it would seem to manage this type of environment would require a sense of respect for each person one is living with. much like having a roommate or sharing a home. what's most important is that one has their personal space or room to reflect and rest undisturbed. there will need to be respect for each other when one is in this mood. also while in studies, speaking to oneself while around others is disturbing and a distraction. academia is about absorbing and containing information. it takes strong mental focus and a willingness to apprentice to fully understand ones studies. when sharing in dorm life, the key is to support each other in these activities. when personal life becomes a challenge, find ways to take care of personal needs outside of the dorm life. one thing i've noticed about the dorms is that they are close to the school and not far from the beach. the campus offers a variety of activities and opportunity to meet others and explore career choices.

    Academic Rigor

academia is a rigorous activity and prepares one for the world. one must learn the balance of rest and activity to keep a balanced mind, body, and spirit. eating right is a daily activity and needs just as much attention as the studies. along with this is physical activity for releasing stress from hours of study. in the end the idea is to develop your mind, at the same time be strong to carry out your vision of what you wish to contribute to the world. how you manage your health will reflect on the way you manage your relations with work, home, and relationships. at santa barbara city college, there is a strong emphasis on wellness at the same time growing in ones career path.

    Tips for prospective students

reading, writing and communication are a key to perform in academia and also learn more about diversity in culture. the college environment opens the door to the world. when choosing your major listen to your intuition and what you are drawn to. you will hear the voices of other students, parents, teachers, and advisors on the best thing to do. in the end you are the one creating your life and deciding what makes you happy.

    In three sentences

a beautiful campus with courses that meet the needs of the students interest and the community. i consider sbcc a college that gives not only in education, also cultural development.

    Bang for the buck

the educational experience, along with the location and student atmosphere is unsurpassed.

    What to do for fun

you are in santa barbara, anything you can imagine for fun can be found nearby. and if all of the opportunities and attractions aren't enough, the campus is about 200 yards from the beach.

    Food and Dining

the cafeteria is great, with a large variety of packaged and prepared foods/goods. there is also a cafe on campus, that is very inexpensive and has excellent food.

    Dorm Life

i haven't lived near campus, but i hear the apartments surrounding the city college are excellent for transportation convenience and social life.

    Academic Rigor

sbcc is known for it's educational level, and recently was named one of the top 10 city colleges in the nation.

    What to do for fun

the beach is right across from the school, so i think that is pretty self-explanatory.

    Academic Rigor

i have taken many difficult classes at this college such as medical microbiology, physiology, anatomy, and chemistry because my major is nursing. i am proud to say they were very challenging and i got a great a education because of this.

    Tips for prospective students

arrive at the school much earlier than when your class starts because parking is horrible at this school. also, the best food on campus is at a deli called the view in the main cafeteria. also, you better get in shape because you have to walk up a lot of stairs up a huge hill everyday to class from the distant parking lots (and that's after you've managed to find a parking space).

    In three sentences

sbcc is the most beautiful campus and you will not find a community college in a better location. however, good luck renting an apartment in santa barbara because it is expensive and sbcc does not offer on campus housing. i am proud of the education i have received at this school though!

If you're willing to be goofy and do random stuff, your experience will be much better, in my opinion. Go play Mario Kart. Definitely go hiking though, there are a bunch of awesome local hiking places that you can find by simply searching online. There are some awesome views. Go to 7 falls, bring some beer. Fun stuff.

    Food and Dining

Great local spots if you know where to look. Don't know where to look? Make friends with a local and they'll tell you. Especially the local Mexican food. Go to Milpas street and sit down at any given local Mexican eatery. You will not be disappointed.

    Dorm Life

I'm going neutral here because it depends on where you live. Life in Isla Vista is awesome and I would recommend living there. It immerses you in the culture, is right on the beach, is great for meeting new people (as long as you are not shy), and is a great place to party. IV is pretty much famous for its crazy parties, especially during Halloween. Super fun though, go surfing!

    Academic Rigor

I love learning, so my opinion here may be a bit biased, but overall haven't found any particular class extremely challenging. Just do the work! For me, I love studying more in-depth than just what the class requires, but overall, not too hard if you are able to balance your life well.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! There are several interesting clubs on campus, namely Philosophy Club, and the teachers are very interested in helping you if you reach out. Take Joe White's Intro to Philosophy class, Joe Martorana's Law and Society, or Eskondari's Political Thinking. Also, don't care what anyone else thinks of you! Be yourself!

    In three sentences

SBCC is a fantastic community college with a beautiful campus. As with many experiences in life, what you put into SBCC will determine what you get out. Overall, great professors and opportunities.

TAP program has helped me a lot since I arrived at college. Without it I don't think i would be attending college because of the guidance i would of lacked from the Transfer Achieve Program. Thanks to it i have always maintained a route and goal plan for the time being spent at SBCC, so I have always been thinking about my future and life after city college, transferring to prestige Universities.

    What to do for fun

Bike riding along the beach coast. I play soccer and currently play for a team in a league so I play a lot of soccer to release stress and have fun with my friends. I also love swimming so I go swimming with my two younger brothers to the local YMCA or the Port Hueneme beach water.

    Food and Dining

My parents usually cook for me so i never have to worry about eating or spending money outside of my house. Although i do sometimes eat out with my friends but i provide my own money.

    Dorm Life

I lived about an hour away in a different city, Oxnard, and so i lived and currently am living with my parents and they have been sustaining me in any way that i have needed so far. Scholarships, grants, parents, labor work and savings have helped me get through my 3 years of college life.

    Academic Rigor

All classes were challenging, none were easy to attain an A. I had to put a lot of extra hours outside of class but i was okay with it because of the determination i had to do vigorously good in all of my classes. I admit there were times where i struggled and could not suffice the level of work effort some classes offered but i still tried and was able to pull through and be at a well academic standing level with my college.

    Tips for prospective students

Be well organized, have a binder and notebooks for every class. Join clubs, get out there and meet people it will make the experience even better. Try different classes that you would not normally take to help you receive that different perspective on life.

    In three sentences

Academically the level of college work is challenging yet satisfying from the material learned and attained. Great staff, all professors want you to succeed and will always help you in any way possible. Wonderful atmosphere on campus that really makes you open your college mind to everything and soak in the Santa Barbara City College experience, especially during the summer right now.

    Greek Life

I am not aware of any fraternities or sororities that operate at SBCC.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs at SBCC, which are good for finding people who share the same interests. These clubs are no where near as active as the clubs at Universities, so they likely wont make a significant part of your social life.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for people who like to party. Its closeness the beach as well as its amazing weather, makes it good for surfers and recreational bicyclists.

    Bang for the buck

In terms of tuition, SBCC is a bargain. It offers a University quality of education with a Community college price, making it a good place to complete general education and lower division requirements.

    What to do for fun

The beach is near the campus, and since Santa Barbara has almost year round good weather, is always a good place to visit. Santa Barbara is a beautiful city, and it is fun touring the city and visiting the shops. There are also interesting places to visit, such as the Santa Barbara Courthouse, which is an architectural marvel in its own right.

    Food and Dining

SBCC has a cafeteria that offers a wide range of cooked foods, as well as sandwiches and fast food. It also has a fast food restaurant on the other side of campus, while not having as many options as the cafeteria, offers a much more serene environment.

    Dorm Life

SBCC does not offer dorms, as far as I am aware

    Academic Rigor

Santa Barbara has some really good professors. Many of them are knowledgeable and funny, and make the educational experience here entertaining and worthwhile.

Fantastically economical, but only if you're a California resident. I'm guessing there's not a huge difference between SBCC's out-of-state tuition and tuition for a four-year university. It is a wonderful experience for international students, but it's ridiculously expensive.

    Food and Dining

Not bad. The JSB Cafe is amazing. The Cafeteria and west campus cafe (or the Greasy Spoon, as we affectionately call it) are overpriced and not fantastic, but the food is fairly good, considering it's a college food.

    Dorm Life

Non-existent. You tend to spend a lot of time hanging out at each other's apartments. Buena Vista apartments across the street from campus are OVERPRICED.

    Academic Rigor

Most classes are very easy, but once in awhile, they will be a class or two that's challenging.

    Tips for prospective students

Start your plan to transfer early. You don't need an IGETC or degree to transfer. Take what the counselors say with a grain of salt. It's better to directly call the school you're interested instead. Live close to campus if you're a serious student. Live in IV if you like to party. Live in Goleta if you're broke. Having a car will make your life a lot easier, especially if you live far from campus. Learn Swedish :)

SBCC is a great place to start your career. In the theatre department, the classes are geared towards beginners and the faculty usually won't cast students in productions, so if you are driven, it will push you to go out and make your own career. I always recommend students to go to a city college before making the jump to a university. The drastic amount of tuition is reason enough to consider doing most of the requirements here where you spend a fraction of the cost at a UC. And unlike most community/city colleges, SBCC has a great academic program ranking them number one in the country! We have the BEST professors around and a fun community to learn in. No matter what, I guarantee nobody will regret attending this school.

    What to do for fun

Around the campus you have an overwhelming amount of activities to choose from. We are right on the beach, so any surfer can life their dream of catching a wave or two between classes. The mountains are within walking distance and are full of hiking trails, one of my personal favorites. Also, as a motorcycle rider, the canyons are breath taking to ride through. And of course, we have great college parties when you feel like getting a little loose on the dance floor.

    Food and Dining

My experience at Tropicana Gardens was filling. In the complex, they had a dining area that was open from 8:00-9:00 and always had quality food available. Each morning you could order an omelet with your choice of fillings or multiple other breakfast options. The lunch menu was full of healthy dishes and appetizing sides. For dinner you have many different options from a double cheese burger to fresh salmon, all of which covered by your rent! You can go in as much as you want and pig out as much as you could. Again, the do your dishes!!

    Dorm Life

As any college student, money is tight. Although it is a city college, they have numerous ties with apartment complexes that offer housing for SBCC students only. This offers a chance for new students to form friendships and provides a health study environment. For example, my first year i lived in Tropicana Gardens where they had dinning commons open all day and even packed you a to go lunch for all day school sessions. The staff members are friendly and helpful with any questions you may have. Not only is the price reasonable, they do your dishes!

    Academic Rigor

Each professor loves their job. They strive to feed the hungry minds of us students and they leave every day with a smile. For example, my physics professor Dr. Young is one of the most amazing person i have ever had the opportunity to learn from. He jumps into the class room each day exited and ready to inform his students of the wonders of the physical world. He is only one example of the many professors here that love each and every day they get to pass their knowledge to young thirsty minds.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't expect easy A's in any of the classes you attend. The professors are willing to help if you meet them in the middle with your hard work and eager to learn. If you're like me, going for that engineering degree, be ready for a long exiting haul because the information will start poring into your brain from day one. This has just recently been deemed number one city college in the nation, and they didn't get there by throwing unprepared students into tough universities all these years.

    In three sentences

Attending this city college has been the best decision i have ever made. Every professor i have had has been not only the best at their job, but a great friend too. The campus is gorgeous, right on the beach, and the materiel is challenging, but help is around every corner.

    Food and Dining

SBCC has two cafeterias and one on campus restaurant which is operated by the SBCC culinary arts program. Each one serves excellent food that is also affordable.

    Dorm Life

SBCC doesn't have dorms, but this school does offer options for housing. Most people I've encountered at SBCC live in Isla Vista, or IV, which is located on the UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara) campus.

    Academic Rigor

SBCC has zero tolerance for plagiarism or cheating on exams. Most professors give a detailed enough syllabus and great lectures so there is no need to cheat.

    Campus Safety

I've never felt like I wasn't safe since I've been here and during my two semesters here, I have never been put in a situation where I felt like I was seriously at risk. It's a very safe campus and Santa Barbara is a safe town. There isn't a lot happening here crime wise and you can go out for a walk, take the bus or ride your bike at night and you don't have to worry.

Great for these types of students

It's a pretty lax and comfortable campus, so it's great for anyone and everyone. I think anyone who wants to learn something new for fun as well as students serious about academics would thrive here.

    Bang for the buck

I think, for a school in California, it's very reasonably priced. Per credit, I've seen much higher and paid more when I attended school in Oregon and it's worth it for the level of academics provided here. You also have a beautiful campus in a great town, wonderful teachers and a multitude of resources that are easily accessible. The cost of living here is on the higher side but it balances out and I believe it's definitely worth it.

    What to do for fun

The beach, of course. Anywhere you go in Santa Barbara, you're never far from the beach and it's a great way to spend a day basking in the California sun. There's also various movie theatres around town, two malls, plenty of shopping downtown and a handful of clubs and bars if you're the partying type.

    Food and Dining

Santa Barbara has a lot of great places to eat and you can always find something that suits your taste if you're feeling picky. From Mexican food to Italian, Chinese, Thai and even Vietnamese - there's something for everyone and majority of the places in town are very reasonably priced.

    Dorm Life

I'm a local resident, so I can't say much about dorm life. The rent in Santa Barbara is on the expensive side and roommates are undoubtedly a must if you're on a tight budget.

    Academic Rigor

I wouldn't say the work is terribly difficult, but depending on your course load, it can seem like a lot with the amount of work that some teachers give out. However, there are tutors for a handful of subjects and the teachers have set office hours in which you can go to them for help.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're considering SBCC, it means you've taken that first step towards earning a higher education and have started on the path towards earning a degree. I applaud you for that and I would certainly recommend SBCC as the place to go. Whether you have your goals set already or you're still undecided on what you want to do, they have something here for everyone and there's always someone ready to help you when you need it.

    In three sentences

The campus is absolutely beautiful and very inspiring, the teachers are wonderful and the school has a lot to offer by way of academics and student activities. There is an abundance of resources available to whoever needs them and studying here provides a strong foundation that prepares any student for transferring to the university of their choice. It's a great place to start working towards a degree, for those just getting started as well as anyone returning to school after a long absence.

    What to do for fun

It's rare for me to do something fun because I usually put school and work as my priority. But when I do have time to have some fun I love spending time with my friends or family.

    Food and Dining

My roommates and I try to have a budget when it comes to food and dining. We each put our part when we go out shopping for food and try to only get things we need and will eat. We don't do much of eating out because money for is pretty tight and can't be waiting money on things unnecessary.

    Dorm Life

I dont live in a dorm but in a apartment with three other girls. The life as an independent student can be difficult when money is a problem to survive in college.

    Academic Rigor

My health is one of my challenges when it comes to my education. I often get sick of chronic migraine headaches or acid reflexes giving me a hard time to focus in class or attend class. I do my best to not let my sickness block me from being successful in school.

    Tips for prospective students

Dont give up and continue walking to your future.

    Campus Safety

Honestly, stuff happens on campus. Accept it, move on, this is the real world and you can't pretend crime doesn't happen. Phones will get stolen if left alone at the library, laptops are not sacred ground, and are attractive targets if left unattended. Keep your eye on your stuff, and nothing bad will happen to it. Other than that, it's an absolutely safe campus. Well lit, well maintained. I wouldn't worry about anything happening to you. Practice some common sense and you'll nearly guarantee you have a safe experience. Girls, don't walk alone at night down a dark alley, and guys, don't prey on girls who are walking alone. Be smart, and you'll stay safe.

    Greek Life

There is no official Greek Life at SBCC, but there are plenty of Greeks from UCSB, and you can certainly chill with them and become their friends, it's the best of both worlds really.

Great for these types of students

SBCC is great for kids who love the sun, surf, and party scene. If you like getting your bronze on, hitting the beach before class, then at night living it up at some of the biggest, most spectacular parties I've ever been to in my life, then you'll love it here. The music is loud, the people are fun, the school is beautiful and practices a climate perfection not seen elsewhere in the country. Extroverts will exceed all expectations here, and even introverts will find comfort in the quiet beach life, a slice of something for everyone really.

    Bang for the buck

SBCC is a spectacular value, especially if you're in-state California. Out of state's (Such as myself) only paid $3000 for a semester of 5 classes, since you pay by the unit. (15 units x 200 a unit = $3000). In state pay significantly less, and most of my friends from California were only paying $1500 a semester. That's only $3000 dollars A YEAR for a world class education that you can carry with you for 2 years before you transfer to a major university. Let's look at it this way: Myself, out of state, pay $6000 in tuition a year. If I had attended UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara) I would have been paying roughly $35,000 dollars in tuition FOR ONE YEAR. So for 2 years of my 4 year degree, I will be paying $12,000 dollars, vs, $70,000 dollars. I don't know about you, but the math there is pretty convincing. With student loan debts on the rise, it makes a lot of sense to keep it cheap while you can.

    What to do for fun

If you didn't know by now, and as you may discover soon, Isla Vista is the party capital of the west coast. I don't wanna hear anything about Well USC is pretty crazy, I heard UCLA goes hard. Maybe they do for them, but this is IV (Isla Vista), and here, the parties are world class. On our main street, Del Playa, thousands (that's not an exaggerated number) of kids from 8PM-1AM roam the streets and jump from house party to house party. The music is loud and fun, the dancing is everywhere, beautiful girls and guys as far as the eye can see, this place is a ton of fun if you're into the party scene. And if you're not, don't worry, there's plenty more to be done as well. State Street is the main street here in Santa Barbara, and it's lined with shops ranging from Chipotle and Forever 21, to smaller, local joints that will give you an equally rewarding visit. If you haven't googled Santa Barbara yet, then go and do it RIGHT NOW and look at the ocean. That's how close you are. I can walk from my English class with a surfboard and hit the waves in less than 5 minutes. It's that close. If you like beach life, where else would you want to be?

    Food and Dining

The food of Isla Vista is traditional college fare. Sandwiches, pizza, wings, Mexican food, everything you would expect in a college town. Some institutions are better than others (I highly recommend Sam's To Go and Silvergreens), but when you're going after cheap college food, anything will do right? As for food at SBCC, it's top notch, and truly spectacular. There is a culinary arts and cooking program here at the university, and some of the best and brightest upcoming chefs are trained here under some of the finest professors (chefs from around the world). All the food, from your chicken nuggets to salad, to Mexican, Asian, Italian, Mediterranean, French, American is prepared by hand, in a kitchen by these upcoming chefs! What better way to study or practice your craft then to produce the food that your fellow classmates will eat? It's not normal cafeteria food, this stuff is real deal, delicious, and affordable. P.S. I wasn't kidding about all those food options. These young chefs are amazing at the variety they can whip up in the kitchen, I haven't had the same thing for lunch twice!

    Dorm Life

There aren't really dorms per se. There is a facility called the Tropicana Gardens in nearby Isla Vista (A 20 minute bus ride), but it is often expensive and not necessarily worth your time. The majority of students here live in Isla Vista homes, renting out a place with their friends. There is a great intermingling of UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara) students and SBCC students all in one area, which really breathes life into the neighborhoods, especially when there is about 30,000 people living there all at once!

    Academic Rigor

This is an exceptionally difficult thing to measure, as it's a relatively arbitrary point of view. Some students do better in school and others don't, so to give a definite example of the rigor is a little nonsensical. What I can say is this, the classes are taught by PhD's in their field who have often taught at major universities themselves. The classes are designed to prepare you for a bachelors degree, and you won't feel left behind if you choose to transfer to a 4-year college.

    Tips for prospective students

Luckily SBCC (Santa Barbara City College) is an open enrollment university, so don't stress about GPA or SAT scores. If you graduated highschool, currently possess a GED, or are 18 years old, you can be admitted to the university. The best thing you can do before arriving here is to pack shorts and t-shirts because that's about all that anyone wears out here! Even in February the mid-afternoon never dips below 60 degrees. On a more serious note, I do advocate mentally preparing yourself for a collegiate lifestyle, this is it. Just because it's a community college don't assume you'll skate by and get away with truancy and disrespect. This place is built to help you succeed, and gives many students a gateway or second chance into the university of their dreams, treat it with respect.

    In three sentences

Santa Barbara City College is bar none, one of the finest institutions of community college learning that exists in the country. The academics are engaging and challenging, and prepare a student for life at a major university elsewhere. And on top of all of that, it's situated in one of the most beautiful places on the west coast.

I am paying quite a bit for out of state tuition however for the most part the college is worth the money (not including the out of state tuition though).

    Academic Rigor

Some professors are more stringent than others. I like a challenge but some are just way too in depth.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are going online only make sure you contact the college via phone and actually speak to a person. I haven't have much luck with emailing different departments.

Great for these types of students

For those who love diversity this is the campus for you. The age range of students go from still in high school taking college courses (dual enrollment), students with families, single moms, single dads, elderly, middle aged, and so on. There has never been one semester where i have gotten the same classmates again. Each semester there is always new people with new faces leading to new and different experiences.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Some students don't like paying the parking fee for the semester, like me, so these cars get parked in the free public parking lot right below the campus next to a baseball field. The only downfall to this is that one either needs to take the long hill, which is a very small hike, or the endless steps all going up to the campus. The steps have to be about or more than 300 steps. By the time one gets to the top, especially for those who are not used to taking that many stairs, are huffing and puffing once they reach the top. Everyone who sees a picture of any part of the stairs going up know right away what stairs they are. I know because I have tried it.

    Bang for the buck

Financial Aid is extremely helpful when it comes to paying for school. Each semester there are different workshops to assist students in getting financial aid for school. It isn't cheap to go to school. Every semester is getting pricier and the school understands the struggle that current students face. Programs have been created especially to assist students of all ages, ethnicity as well as family backgrounds to compete their academic goals.

    What to do for fun

There is downtown no more than five minutes away so it is very easy to take the public bus and get to the downtown area for a meal. Downtown has many stores, restaurants, theaters, and many shops for entertainment.

    Food and Dining

There is a cafeteria with food made by the culinary art students. I will admit that there are days in which the food comes out better than others but it almost always comes out good. especially their pasta salads and breakfast meals. SBCC even has a fruit bowl station in which you order a healthy fruit bowl with yogurt and fixings (yum).

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms. Sorry. There is assistance to help find an apartment or even shared room with another student(s) who is also attending SBCC

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are harder than others but then again it is college. There is no class thats impossible. As long as the reading, homework, and you participate an A is not hard to get, Even with the toughest teacher on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Its in a great community in a great location. There is the downtown area no more than five minutes away. Residential areas all around the campus so finding a place to live is almost never an issue, especially with staff members who help you find a place if you need them.

    In three sentences

What is there not to love about a college who is literally on the edge of the beach! Not only are all the teachers the most knowledgeable, all the students on campus are very diversified so you get a very wide range of cultures which gives you a better understanding of what is out there in the world. Also, all staff members are extremely helpful and will help guide you in which ever path of your choice, even if you change it many times like i have.

    Campus Safety

Seems safe enough, even though the school shooter was from there. That wasn't their fault.

    Clubs and Activities

I know there are sports, and a few clubs, even study abroad

Great for these types of students

People who didn't/couldn't get into UC schools, people who just want a 2 year degree, they have some cool ones. People looking to save money.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    No idea

    Bang for the buck

Definitely a huge savings over USCB, so for out of state, it would be about the same as ASU to go here, but about 1/3 the price of USCB, but at least it cuts 2 years off of the UCSB tuition.

    What to do for fun

Beach, sports teams, a few clubs. Most people commute--well all people commute as there are no dorms, but mostly people don't hang out for long on campus after class is over.

    Food and Dining

Not much food, just a cafeteria. So So

    Academic Rigor

Decent for CC and they help you get your IGETC and with all of your transfer arrangements. I think getting a TAG from here would be fairly easy.

    Tips for prospective students

THis is a great way to get into UCSB or another UC school. That was my main interest. It looks nicer than most community colleges, although not as nice as in the brochures. They don't have dorms, and that makes it a hard decision. They advertise Tropican Gardens, but that place is supposedly a hell hole. I've read nearly every review on the internet on TG and they sound awful and super expensive too. I would only go to SBCC if I could find a nice place to live down by UCSB (but NOT TG).

    In three sentences

Beautiful Location, overlooking the beach Impossible to park Some of the buildings were trailers or manufactured double wide type buildings

I feel like there is a place for every type of person.

    What to do for fun

You can go watch the new movie coming out or go do some shopping in State Street.

    Food and Dining

As in regards to food you choose what you eat because there is no meal plan because it is a community college. There is a huge selection to choose from you can grab a bite in school or go down to State Street.

    Dorm Life

What is so great about SBCC is that there are apartments everywhere for students to live in. For that reason you feel like your still attending a four year but your saving so much money. Therefore the living conditions in which you may live depend on your apartment complex they range from all prices so you can choose what fits your financial status.

    Academic Rigor

The classes range from hard to manageable for the most part you will be able to pass all your class just attend class.

    Tips for prospective students

My tip would be change your high school mindset you have to be on top of your stuff and know what is due. Attend class everyday that class meets and don't procrastinate.

    In three sentences

Santa Barbara City College is great for a student who is independent and focused. Someone who does not mind the beach atmosphere and loves nature. SBCC is great college for someone who just wants to be able to transfer to a four year university and does not want to miss out of the fun.
