Categories Comments Great for these types of students The great thing about Santa Monica College is that it's so diverse. It really caters to a variety of different needs. Whether it be a just-out-of-high school student hoping to transfer, or a professional simply looking to expand their horizons, Santa Monica College has something for everyone.
Tips for prospective students Do your research, and be prepared. Because Santa Monica College is a Junior College, many students enroll with the idea that it will be easy, and they slack off. Some people think that transferring to a university from a junior college is easier than trying to get in straight from high school, but in reality, it's more difficult. The truth is that transfer students face a lot of competition, and when it comes time to admit transfer students, good universities only want the best of the best. They want to know that the students they're admitting are as smart and responsible as, if not, more than, the students they've already admitted. The way to really excel in Santa Monica College is to treat it like it is a regular, serious, four-year university. Do well in your classes, and make friends with your teachers. That way, you'll obtain great references and really impress universities by showing them that you're ready and willing to handle more responsibility.
Bang for the buck Starting Santa Monica College as an out-of-state student, I had to pay a lot more than a California resident. But even though my tuition is higher than other students, I'm still receiving a great deal. The quality of the school is great, and some teachers at universities even teach at SMC in their spare time. You're basically taking the same classes as the ones given at the nearby universities, but paying a lot less for it.
Am enjoying being here SMC has what a lot of colleges lack, and that's a positive energy. Maybe it's the welcoming environment, the helpful staff, the great location, or the beautiful campus, but there isn't one person I've met who doesn't like SMC. In just the short amount of time that I have attended SMC (Santa Monica College), I've truly made so many great memories and friends. Plus, this school makes it really easy for you to organize and get started on the path to achieving your life goals. What's not to love about that?
Am learning a lot The reputation of junior colleges is that the level of education is not very high. For some junior colleges, that may be true, but the quality of classes at Santa Monica College is exceptional. That's why it's rated one of the best junior colleges in the nation. At any college, there are bound to be classes that aren't for you. Talking to a counselor and websites that give student-written reviews can be really helpful. However, with proper research, you're sure to find university-level classes at Santa Monica that challenge you and really work with you.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Independent, self-motivator, struggling financially, students looking to transfer to a university.
Tips for prospective students I made sure to lookup my professors on ratemyprofessors.com before deciding to stick with the particular professor I chose. Of course everyone has to take it upon themselves to get a good grade, but you still need to make sure you have a professor who is willing to help you when you ask for it and who genuinely loves teaching.
Bang for the buck I get financial aid, but I still have to pay for my books, which tend to be worth an arm and a leg. Still, I believe that SMC is one of the best junior colleges in Southern California. The location is amazing, who doesnt like an ocean breeze?, the facility is overall maintained well, many teachers leave a great lasting impression, and the school boasts about being #1 in transfers to UCLA. This definitley is a great school to choose to attend if planning on transferring.
Am enjoying being here I do get to see many of my high school friends, but sometimes I wish I could meet more new people. Of course this is something that one has to take upon themselves to accomplish. It was easier in high school to talk to people in class, but not so much in college. Once you are in class you have to be prepared to listen to the tecaher speak non stop through the entire period, there isnt much time to socialize. If you get to do group projects, then you have a chance to make new friends, or if you join a club. There are diverse people all throughout the campus, you meet people from all ages and from different countries as well. You just have to take the initiative if you really want to meet new people.
Am learning a lot Every school has its pros and cons, especially when it comes to the faculty. Fortunately most of the professors at SMC are top notch, many have taught and still teach at great schools such as UCLA. I recently took a business course and it put me at ease with choosing to be a busness major. My professor gave interesting lectures as well as memorable ones. Many students from junior colleges fear that once they transfer to a university the coursework will be alot harder, but based on myexperience, I don't think the transition will be impossible.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Santa Monica College is a great school for all types of students. Race, religion or age will not affect you in any way. SMC is has a good environment for all types of students regardless of who you are. What matters is that you are willing to sacrifice your time to get a good education to have a brighter future. Having a variety of students is very good because you learn more about other races and that there are many people out there who think and are just like you. SMC has a variety of programs and services that will help you out, give you benefits and make school be a lot easier.
Tips for prospective students A very good tip for prospective students would be to not give up half way when things are looking bad. That you should not give in to pressure because where there is a will there is a way. Having good grades and maintaining them is not very hard because there is a lot of help available for you. The most important thing that you have to remember is that you should learn how to manage your time. If you do not know how to manage your time, getting things done will be very difficult. Things will get clamped together and you will miss out assignments, tests and important events. You can avoid all of these things if you are able to manage your time and student planners are a vary good way to do so. Also, a very good tip would be to visit a counselor at least twice per semester as this will help you keep in track with your goals.
Bang for the buck To pay for school doesn't have to cost you an eye outta your face. Classes are very cheap at only $26 and tuition is not going to hit you in the face. Taking at least two years at Santa Monica College will save you a lot of money as for you wont have to pay thousands like in 4 year universities. Although, there is plenty of financial aid available for students that qualify for it. This will make it easier for you and wont have to spend your money on books witch do cost a lot. By the way you do not have to buy the books straight from the student book store as you can buy books from your fellow students and classmates. You can also sell your books back to the book store or to other students that need it.
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying being at Santa Monica because It really is a very good school. there is a lot of interaction and campus events going on. It is a very quiet and helpful environment where one can study outdoors without disruptions and if preferred indoors where staff will make sure that you have a quiet place to study. The campus consists of a many computer labs and a big library with a variety of books for research.
Am learning a lot Santa Monica College is a very good school where learning is easy and fun. The teachers are very good and they are willing to help you when you need it. There is plenty of help and one-on-one counseling. I really am learning a lot of what is expected from me and that there really is no reason for missing out work and failing because, your work is given to you on a syllabus at the beginning of class. I am really learning that as long as i put dedication to studying and in-class assignments, the classes can be very smooth and easy.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students who are instate residence because you are getting a GREAT education while saving thousands of dollars. Also great for students who want a second chance at getting into top universities in the country. I know many people who came to SMC with a bad high school record and got into USC, Berkeley, UCLA, Columbia, NYU, ect. This school can be your hope for a better future!
Tips for prospective students Before prospective students go to SMC, I suggest that you make a clear plan to take as many units as you can while at SMC. Also, I suggest enrolling in classes as soon as you can because the classes fill up quickly. Finally, study hard and take in as much information and life experience as you can while you are a student here.
Bang for the buck The only problem I had with the financial part of this school is that I was an out of state student and it was hard for me to be classified as instate. The out of state tuition is about ten times more than the instate price so I did not think that it was fair. Although, if I were an instate student, I think this is the best deal for a junior college because of the great education at a good price. Even though it was more expensive for me, I still think that SMC has the value to be worth the out of state tuition. Another negative is that the Santa Monica/ West LA area is expensive in general. Therefore, the living expenses to go to this school is not fair.
Did enjoy being here I loved being at SMC. It was a great experience and I wish that I didn't have to leave. This school helped me to get into UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, and UC Berkeley. It was a great stepping stone to prepare me for upper level classwork at UCLA. This school has a lot to offer to the students. I know many people are sad to leave the school because SMC became another home away from home. The many sponsored events and seminars on campus help build up school spirit and passion to learn and succeed in life. The only regret I had with spending time at SMC is not using the short time to to take advantage of all the things the school had to offer.
Did learn a lot From Santa Monica College (SMC), a student can learn many things: academically and socially. I didn't expect much out of this junior college, but the education level at SMC proved to be good enough to earn the outstanding reputation it has. The math and science courses at SMC are not easy and truly prepares students for harder level courses at UCLA or Berkeley. Also, as an out of state student, I did not expect to make lots of friends, but there are many clubs on campus to get you involved and learn many things from the students and teachers. The professors here are from other great schools in the area like UCLA and USC, so I am positive the students will learn a lot and have a great network to be connected to the neighborhood and even the world!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Santa Monica College is an appropriate fit for people who have busy lifestyles, a tight budget, or are new to the college atmosphere. it is a school where mistakes wont dig you into a deep hole you cant crawl out of, almost like college with training wheels.
Tips for prospective students prospective students need to stay informed about the college workshops and in contact with a counselor. these are pivotal tools for survival. study groups and the occasional all-nighter are worth it, discipline and determination will be tested, so support from friends and family is also a necessity.
Bang for the buck the textbooks are pricey, but when utilized and actually read, one would realize the substance within their bindings. The BOG fee waiver, which pays for tuition was easily obtainable for me, and for others the $20-30 price per unit doesn't seem too bad when compared to other UC's or private colleges.
Am enjoying being here While being a freshman, I joined the Black Collegians program which not only helped me academically by enrolling me in top of the notch courses but also emotionally by assigning me to a compassionate, and caring mentor to advise me through my college years; something of which i deeply appreciate.
Am learning a lot At Santa Monica College, one not only learns about the black and white topics of a syllabus, but also the principle behind those standards and the ways to apply those topics to ones life; For example While taking an English class, the topic of public advertisements came up after a deep dissection about the finesse of Ads, many walked away with the lesson that there is a meaningful message behind a flashy picture.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Santa Monica College is great for all kinds of students and international students who are willing to pay some money for their education. It is also great for adults who work because there are night time classes and even weekend classes.
Tips for prospective students I say if you are not ready for a 4-year university than you should definitely consider Santa Monica College. Also, it has the highest transfer rate to UC's One thing I would give advice on is that you should definitely speak with a counselor before starting because you don't want to be stuck at SMC forever.
Bang for the buck Personally because I am not an international student I think the prices are great. Although recently because of the budget cuts the prices have increased dramatically I still believe its reasonable. For international students I cannot say the same thing. Santa Monica College is a really expensive school for internationals. They pay more than 3,000 dollars.
Am enjoying being here Santa Monica College has a very welcoming environment and because there students from all over the world you are always learning something new. There are a variety of clubs and organizations that help you become more involved in the school. The teachers and counselors are also great. I think because they have experience with so many different cultures and situations they take every student as a individual, and not generalize them.
Am learning a lot I think based on your major this college really does provide a lot. Santa Monica College is especially great for international students. They give a sufficient amount of homework which really helps students prepare for transferring to universities. Santa Monica College also has the highest transfer rate to UCLA. The only problem is that sometimes they are tough with their schoolwork but that is because so students don't slack off, because in colleges students have that tendency to do so.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It's a great, nice campus and a neighborhood. BUT There has been many instances of robberies of Purses, cell phones, bikes and a few auto thefts. Just follow SMCPD's guidelines and you shouldn't have a problem.
Bang for the buck International Student's pay about $3700 (in 2011) for a semester. Good deal compared to 7k, 10k and 25k of CSU, UC and USC.
What to do for fun I just keep my Boogie Board in my trunk and hop in the ocean between classes (in summer). Or head to the Venice Skatepark.
Food and Dining 3 Coffee shops. Cafeteria with 3 outlets offer a varied selection.
Tips for prospective students Classes fill up very soon. Sooner you add, the better Don't completely depend on the counselors on 1. Completing requirements for a specific university. Solution - Contact your major's Dept. of the University you are transferring to, to get 'all' the information you need or there's about a 50% chance you could be wasting 1 or 2 more semesters in SMC. 2. Don't expect the counselors to know anything specific about your major except for what is at www.assist.org and www.csumentor.org/com Partial solution - Contact an appropriate professor. Partial because I got most helpful information off the internet's reliable sources than what I got from a couple of professors. Now don't get the wrong idea. Most of the Professors I've had are top-notch. But they might not be up-to-date. e.g: I want to be a computer hardware engineer. So I kept looking at monster.com and craigslist.org for job listings. Many of the positions mainly required that i know Verilog. I asked a couple of my professors and they did not know what it was. From internet I learned that it is an HDL (Hardware Descriptive Language) and that SMC does not offer it but many universities in my hit-list do. Moral of the story- Do your own research about what you want and how to get it!
In three sentences Professors with Masters or professional experience Attractive modern buildings Attractively dressed girls

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus police are there and readily patrolling the area. they also give update on any incidents that occur via e-mail.
Clubs and Activities lots of clubs and associations that are active in this community. i give it a 4 because you really have to seek out these clubs in order to join in.
Great for these types of students -determined but aren't necessarily clear on what they want to major in -returning students -anyone really!
Bang for the buck community college is the most economical decision you can make! especially if you are considering a uc or cal state education this is the place to go! i was tentative about starting out at community college because of the stigma that is typically associated with it but believe me it saves you two years of tuition! despite the recent hikes in the price per unit, there is simply no comparison.
What to do for fun with your student id card you can ride the big blue bus for free! you can hop on line 7 and be at the beach or at 3rd st. promenade in less than 10 minutes.
Food and Dining the cafeteria is decent here. their known for their sustainability efforts, but its too pricey.
Dorm Life there is none :)
Academic Rigor i gave this a 4 because of the level that you can eventually get to at smc. the more liberal arts can range from 2-3, but the maths and sciences courses here are known for being up to par university level so stay on your game.
Tips for prospective students try to enroll into any special programs there to get a priority enrollment (e.g. scholars, black collegians, adelante, etc.) --there is bound to be one that will fit your interest/needs, plus they have invaluable resources that will put you on the right track.
In three sentences smc is an amazing place to get your started with college. with increasing budget cuts this is one of the few community colleges that is making a strong effort keep classes strong. the faculty is great and there are a number of them that have resources you can tap into that you wouldn't expect on the community college level---so use them!

Categories Comments Campus Safety pretty safe
Clubs and Activities too many to list
Great for these types of students beach lovers (many great beaches nearby)
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus nice grassy areas to study outdoors.
Bang for the buck classes are so much less expensive than at uc's or other colleges.
What to do for fun watch or participate in sports. go to the planetarium. attend plays or musical performances.
Food and Dining there is a food court with food for every taste.
Academic Rigor smc has high standards. you really learn a lot, whichever class you choose.
Tips for prospective students sign up as soon as possible for classes. buy used books to save money.
In three sentences smc is topnotch. the teachers really care about your success. smc is the #1 college to transfer to the uc's.

Categories Comments Campus Safety every campus is not a safe as we would like. if your going to stay late make sure you tell someone or have someone on the phone as you walk to your car or have someone walk with you.
Clubs and Activities santa monica has tons of clubs you can join. clubs and activities are a good way to get far. people want to see that you were and what you were involved when looking to hire you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there is a burger joint right around the corner of a bus stop on the way home that we used to stop by every friday. the burgers and fries are stacked up high and the price is right, it is exactly what every college student looks for. and its a fun place to hang out with friends.
What to do for fun studying all the time does wear you out so take a day to relax and have fun. take a class like dance or drawing thats fun for you and get your mind off studying for a while.
Food and Dining most college students have to learn to use money wisely due to the expensive books and tuition. try to limit the amount of times that you eat out, pack lunch, and prepare meals or eat at home.. its free.
Dorm Life you really don't have to dorm. it is a matter of personal choice. if you live far staying in a dorm seems like the way to go. but if you live close staying home seems like a good way to save money.
Academic Rigor one thing that sets college apart from high school or middle school, is that the main thing pushing you through the classes is yourself. santa monica is there to help but also do not play the role of a parent in other words they are not going to check you homework or make sure you pay things on time.
Tips for prospective students if you know exactly what you what to major in i suggest that you find a school that fits that major however if you are not sure of your major just yet attend college like santa monica and find it there. it is far more difficult to start studying again once you have stopped.
In three sentences santa monica college, in my opinion, is a wonderful place to get started. the campus is very large and the school has a large variety of classes that you can take in order to get a head start in your career planning. whether you want to major in medicine, creative writing, or cosmetology it is a good place to start.

Categories Comments Campus Safety security is friendly and nice. in my opinion it is a safe school- i've seen kids been arrested for bike theft. they seem to be on top of most situations.
Greek Life none whatsoever.
Clubs and Activities average variety of clubs. many help transfer to 4 year colleges.
Great for these types of students students that want to save money, but still get a great education.
Bang for the buck in state residents pay around 30 dollars a credit hour (extremely cheap!) and get a great education. i am an accounting major and have heard personally from a ucla professor and two smc teachers that students who take accounting at smc for 2 years vs. ucla accounting are better prepared for the advanced courses. smc will save your bank account and at the same time give you pristine professors that care about your future.
What to do for fun santa monica college has great leisure time activities. students can gather on the lawns to enjoy the weather, or simply go to the beach that is less than a mile away. participating in school clubs to meet people or connections can also be fun/rewarding.
Food and Dining at santa monica college we have what is called eat street. they serve a variety of foods for the variety of cultures that attend. salad bar, chinese, mexican, and american. they also have a cafe, with small sides like pastries. near the campus is filled with restaurants, (many that provide student discounts.) for example, abbots pizza, subway, burger king, foster freeze, etc.
Dorm Life no dorms are available at smc.
Academic Rigor average. it all depends on your professor and how they grade. overall my professors have been fair. business and science are the best majors because of the teachers and their backgrounds. they tend to be harder but very rewarding. math is the hardest subject at smc.
Tips for prospective students smc is the best transfer college in california, if students use the resources to their advantage. get involved in clubs, because many attend seminars and fairs that link connections in the future. stay disciplined in school and keep your options open.
In three sentences santa monica college is a fantastic financial loophole. it has well qualified professors, even some who teach at universities like usc, ucla, and many more. the staff and students are so diverse, you can expect anything.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never once felt unsafe, or threatened in any way.
Greek Life Greek life does not seem to be a strong cultural influence at Santa Monica College, in my experience so far.
Clubs and Activities There is an incredible range of activities to suit the interests of any student, visitor, and/or staff member.
Great for these types of students California relaxed lifestyle, hanging out with people who tend to have a sunny disposition, BUT willing to put forth a strong dedication to studies.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus SMC's campus has an extensive recycling and earth-friendly policy which seems to affect students' personal habits on campus and away from school.
Bang for the buck I have not been to many other campuses, but Santa Monica College does seem to be top-notch. SMC has gorgeous landscaping throughout, fountains, state-of-the-art sports facilities, and a successful theater. The massive library, architecturally and administratively, seems to promote a healthy study habit among all students.
What to do for fun Go to a football game, see a lecture, or visit the Broadstage!
Food and Dining There are plenty of vending machines spread around the campus with some healthier options, in addition to the typical selections. The cafeteria offers a wide range of quick, on-the-go bites and many hot, tasty meals which can satisfy various ethnic cravings or a simple traditions of American dishes.
Dorm Life I live off-campus, but I hear it's splendid!
Academic Rigor The professors will push you toward excellence, helping you tremendously, to grow as a student, but they don't tolerate those who create distraction, which draws crucial attention and energy that could otherwise be utilized by another student who shows that they are there to achieve.
Tips for prospective students Stay well-informed on current requirements in the fields you are most interested in. Always keep your eye out for new, diverse opportunities; be willing to explore!
In three sentences I am so very pleased with all of my instructors at Santa Monica College. While providing a wealth of information and support, I can see how greatly they are helping to shape my future in an incredibly positive way. The classmates that I am surrounded by are an important factor, as well, when considering my overall happiness at school; they are generally great team players and help make learning fun!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Santa Monica College is so diversed and multicultural there isn't a type of student it is equally great for any student. Evidence of this is the many international students who transfer there yearly, as well as the local kids coming from Santa Monica High School and Venice High School. The opportunity to meet someone from a different background here is endless and it also help students see the cultural differences and traditions of other races and ethnicities.
What to do for fun The best thing about being by the beach is there is limitless amounts of fun for all students. Jazz clubs, the pier, great eateries, book clubs, run clubs, movie theatre, and more can all be found at The Third Street Promenade. With your SMC ID the five minute bus trip is free and definitely worth it. It has attractions for all ages and promotes an atmosphere of family fun. And if you're ever near the school on saturdays , during the fall semesters SMC hosts men's football at Corsair Stadium which is always a great way to show school spirit.
Food and Dining The food and dining at SMC is subpar and very pricey. However, it is convenient when studying long hours or don't have time to go your favorite restaurant. Campus Kitchen offers a huge variety of entrees to choose from, from asian cuisine to south american dishes every dish can satisfy any student. If you aren't a cafeteria type of person SMC is in the center of every type of restaurant or fast food chains. For the burger lovers Burger King and Foster Freeze is located across the street, and for my pizza fans Pizza Hut and a small mom and pops dinery is also located walking distances. Whatever the taste, SMC has it or a short distance away from it.
Dorm Life There isn't really official dorms for the school, but there are local student housing units around the area. If you are a fortunate student to get in one of these units, I can imagine the endless possibilities it entails; you're right near the beach, 24 Hour Fitness is located right off Ocean Park, and you can get to school without worrying about a parking spot; that has got to be the life.
Academic Rigor This is where Santa Monica excels, as aforementioned Santa Monica College is the best available bridge from high school to a four year institution. The class structures are intended for you to be proactive and do outside research and readings and come to class prepared to respond and ask questions. The golden rule in college and higher education in general is: for every hour in class, one must spend double that outside class studying. SMC explores this rule and makes it even more challenging but rewarding when you get an A on your transcript.
Tips for prospective students For incoming students, my biggest tip would be just put maximal effort into what ever courses they are taking and stay focused. The instructors understand that everyone isn't an aerospace engineer or biochemist, they just want to see effort being put into their class and office hours are the most beneficial periods for any students; any comments, questions, or just a little chit chat can be discussed during office hours. The second big one is stay focused, definitely for new high school graduates. Although, Santa Monica College makes the transition from high school to college smooth at time it does feel like a high school environment, but that doesn't mean you can pass a class without doing homework, miss lectures and labs, or pass an exam without rigorous studying. So to ensure your success apply the most amount of effort to the best of your ability in the allotted time you have.
In three sentences Santa Monica College is a great college that enables a smooth transition from high school or trade school to a traditional four year institution. The classes are charismatic yet challenging, and the instructors are always understanding and pushes students to their maximum potential. Santa Monica College is the leading community college in California for a reason, and I'm proud to be a student.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities The best clubs are here at SMC. They all get together to promote their club at an event called Club Row. Best event ever! All i can say is free food and lots of fun!
Great for these types of students Santa Monica is a school for every type of student.
Bang for the buck The biggest bang for your buck is the Associates Students Sticker which is only $19.50. It gives you access to free rides on every big blue bus, cheap movie tickets, and more. Even though books are expensive at school but SMC has the option of selling back your books for almost half of what you paid for it. Students are always looking to sell books for way cheaper than what the book store sells it for.
What to do for fun I love going to the beach in between classes on sunny days. I set my class schedule so that I have time to squeeze in a trip or five(lol) to the beach. I also enjoy club row in the Spring and Fall. I have gotten free food for solving math problems.
Food and Dining SMC has a great selection of food on campus. There are lots of healthy choices. The best deal for your budget would be at Abbot's Pizza Company on Pico across the street from the college. They are always offering student deals for delicious meals.
Academic Rigor Passing classes are easy if you stay focused and get all the help that is offered. Free tutoring is offered in almost every subject that is taught here at Santa Monica College.
Tips for prospective students I would suggest that you go to a counselor in the welcome center and then after you are in enrolled, go to the counselors within the counseling center. If one counselor you see is not the right one for you, don't give up, just make an appointment to see another. Most importantly research this college to see if it is the right one for you.
In three sentences Santa Monica College is the best place to be if your goal is transferring. The biggest plus for this school is how close it is to the beach. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The bagel pizza place in front of main campus is the best!
What to do for fun The beach! What can be more beautiful than a campus five minutes away from the Pacific ocean?
Tips for prospective students Visualize yourself achieving your goals and dreams and anything is possible. Be the early bird, and be outspoken. Nothing will be handed to you here, and you have to fight hard for what you need.
In three sentences You may get lost in the shuffle of determined students and lazy students, so you have to pick a side the moment you step on campus. The beautiful sea side community offers everything you need to transfer to a good four-year university. Now if only we could get more classes, more of us could get to where we want to go.

Bang for the buck This is a community college, so it's cheaper than regular Universities but still pricey for a starving student.
Did enjoy being here It's kind of congested for a campus and parking/traffic is a pain. It's best to use the Big Blue Bus (public transit).
Did learn a lot I really like the professors here. They're friendly, intelligent and very helpful.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The cafeteria on campus is the biggest, there are too many options to choose from inside or where you want to eat, we have seven restaurant stations to buy food, but the food tend to be a bit pricey.
Dorm Life Santa Monica College is a junior college, we do not have any dorms but, the school does specialize in helping student find roommates.
Academic Rigor The academics are I find different than any school, every year there is a theme the English department focuses on so that all the students (international as well) can relate to & understand each other on
In three sentences On a scale from one to ten I give Santa Monica College a ten. For instance, the diversity I love it you have so many different people from all over the world on campus. Unlike any other junior college, Santa Monica College is only a preview of what a university feels like.

In three sentences Santa Monica has one of the best education programs in California. I am very impressed with how diverse the campus is. The down-side to Santa Monica College is the fact that their planning to raise the cost of tuition, which will not give students of lower income families the chance to receive their great education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety very safe. i leave my stuff around sometimes. only got robbed once, and it was just some quarters.
Greek Life there are honor societies like Phi Theta Cappa in which students do volunteer work to improve their applications to transfer.
Clubs and Activities there are lots of great clubs like subject clubs (math, science...), religious, interest clubs (anime, glass-blowing...), and competitive clubs.
Great for these types of students likes diversity, seeing new things, small classes, friendly people, and a beach setting
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus protests occasionally, we have ducks walk around sometimes. people sing and play guitar on the grass while others shuffle on the concrete. people ask you to do a survey for them or teach you some bible.
Bang for the buck i get paid to go to school, especially with scholarships provided by great sponsors like cappex.
What to do for fun go to the beach/pier, shop, talk with locals, take the bus around town, roller skate, bike, swim, eat.
Food and Dining wonderful selection of food around campus, outside the campus I should say. I have food from a different country everyday and everywhere I go around the area.
Dorm Life no dorms.
Academic Rigor The classes are not a piece of cake, but again use all resources from the library to the professor to get through the classes like a breeze.
Tips for prospective students Use the resources available such as tutoring, office hours, counselors, and any form of aid so that you do not waste your time.
In three sentences This school is highly diverse with a great setting in the most scenic city in California. Categories Comments Great for these types of students Unsure of major/CC transfers
Bang for the buck Such a great community college. Arguably, the best.
What to do for fun Campus events, such as sports and campus activity hours every Tuesday and Thursday. Lots of free lectures from respectable speakers in their field, and movie nights are also offered. Clubs are also fun, journalism, chess, film, etc.
Food and Dining Eat St., two Starbucks, one Peet's at the Campus Cafeteria are great. Really health-conscious options as well as vegetarian/vegan options if those interest you.
Dorm Life Not really applicable, it is a community college after all, but the apartments surrounding SMC are great, not to mention at a great location- just a few blocks away from the beach!
Academic Rigor The standards are definitely up there; I'd choose 5 stars if it weren't for the helpful teachers and labs/tutoring centers that help you achieve success!
Tips for prospective students If unsure of your major, please take Counseling 12. Personality, interest, and career assessments are offered, and you really get feel for what you want to major in and apply it to. I feel this class should be mandatory!
In three sentences Absolutely a wonderful experience. Teachers and the staff at Admissions, FinAid, Counseling, and Psychological Services are all amazing, respectful, professional individuals. The campus has a great feel to it, there is diversity and the cafeteria is also a plus.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities There are numerous clubs that you can join! Clubs are wonderful outlets in meeting people that are similar and share the same interests as you.
What to do for fun SMC is at the heart of the city and is right by the beautiful 3rd Street Promenade as well as the beach. After a long class or an exam, there are many places to go so you can take a break from your busy college life.
Food and Dining There is a small cafe and a cafeteria located within the school. I have never eaten there but as a spectator, it seems to be crowded and I assume it is a good place to eat. There are also numerous cafes and restaurants around the area that I absolutely love, Daisy Cafe, is one of them, and it is right by Santa Monica College.
Dorm Life Santa Monica College only offers dorms for out of state and international students, I am a resident here so I can not give you the best advice or description of the dorms.
Academic Rigor I believe it offers a good college environment with faculty that are excited in teaching and guiding students toward their individual goals. Plus, SMC has the number 1 UC transfer rate. There is a program called the Scholars Program that requires students to write an essay and meet the minimum GPA requirement to join. It offers selected classes only for Scholars students and has a competitive atmosphere, where all the students that have joined want to transfer to a 4-year university. I am in this program and I have met so many enthusiastic and hardworking people, it is a very good atmosphere to be in if you are determined to transfer to a university. Also, SMC has a UCLA Outreach program where you can take actual classes at UCLA while you are still a student at SMC. The college offers many pathways that does not confine you but rather gives you an open canvas for you to paint your own goals and aspirations.
Tips for prospective students I would advise you to get a parking permit because the meters surrounding the school are usually filled. Also, visit professors at office hours because they are there to help you and it is a wonderful opportunity to make connections while you are at a smaller campus compared to a university.
In three sentences I would rate Santa Monica College an 8/10. It is a wonderful campus, with ambitious students and helpful faculty. This is a good environment where you can really take advantage of your time to learn about yourself and discover what you truly want to be.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I feel very safe on campus! Security is easily accessible, friendly around campus, and I always know that they'll be there if I need them.
Greek Life I was happy and interested to find out that Santa Monica does have Fraternities and Sororities. Those kinds of college bonds can be invaluable in life and it's something people often think they'll miss out on by attending a community college.
Clubs and Activities There is always something going around on campus. I work in addition to going to school so I'm not always able to attend, but I love going to their live performances and the weekly happenings in the quad.
Great for these types of students Independent students looking for the normal college setting but with more options.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a small closed off area behind the theater building that is just enough in the middle of everything and just secluded enough to take your lunch and some homework.
Bang for the buck At Santa Monica College you get the same quality education as the four year you'll be transferring to. Between financial aid, their helpful workshops, and my fantastic professors, I know I'm getting my money's worth.
What to do for fun Santa Monica is such a wonderful setting for this open learning environment. With tons of shopping and all kind of dining, and not to mention the beaches of Santa Monica, there is never a dull moment.
Food and Dining The main campus has a fantastic cafeteria. As a vegetarian and a stickler for natural foods I expect to be disappointed but there are so many deliciously inexpensive and healthy options! Of course there's also several coffee shop spots to go to to get my daily treat.
Dorm Life One of the benefits to Santa Monica is that there are a lot of apartments close to campus and many buildings with mostly Santa Monica College students. You also have the option of settling anywhere in Los Angeles. I come from East LA to take classes at Santa Monica College and I love it!
Academic Rigor Santa Monica College offers many different kinds of courses and teaching styles. This includes 'scholars classes' for the particularly rigorous but there are many courses that will help the inexperienced ascend to new academic heights.
Tips for prospective students Research and Organize. Exhaust all the options and resources available to you but don't get overwhelmed. Your school's financial aid and counseling departments are there to help you stay the course. Stay dedicated and remind yourself of your achievements to keep you motivated.
In three sentences Santa Monica College is a very populated school, and for good reason. Dedicated and helpful staff support and aid the student population despite of never ending budget cuts and higher than ever enrollment rates. This beautiful campus provides accessible and high quality professors giving each one of their students the tools needed to excel.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Minimal issues and you often see security/Santa Monica Police on campus.
Clubs and Activities Don't seem worth the time.
Great for these types of students Veterans who are serious about getting their education for a minimal price.
Bang for the buck Although a community college, SMC is a pretty decent education for the $46/unit price. One year ago it was only $26/unit, so get it while the gettin's good.
What to do for fun Get off campus.
Food and Dining Food court is okay. Limited and repetitive menu.
Academic Rigor Choose your classes carefully and you can get a quality education at SMC. On the other hand, it seems pretty easy for some students to skate through without taking their education seriously. You get what you put into it at SMC.
Tips for prospective students Veterans get preferred and early access to sign up for classes, so it definitely helps to be a veteran.
In three sentences Very high transfer rate to 4 year programs. Currently, the staff and student support is at a minimum due to overpopulation of the student services. Categories Comments Campus Safety Except for one incident where someone was robbed and some students protesting were pepper sprayed, campus safety has been pretty on point from my experiences.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs to join and you can even start your own if you desire. There are also A LOT of activities held throughout the school year.
What to do for fun There is a lot to do for fun on campus. It is a great place to socialize as it is a very diverse campus. There is a wide variety of clubs to join and activities to partake in. There are also tons of athletics covering pretty much every sport. I suggest joining a sport that you enjoy, joining a club, and meeting new people and you get to do so under BEAUTIFUL California weather.
Food and Dining Food and dining is decent. What gets me is it is a little expensive so I don't eat on campus often. I guess its pretty standard for colleges just not something I am used to. When I do eat on campus the food is satisfactory.
Dorm Life Santa Monica College is a community college so they don't provide dorms.
Academic Rigor The academics and school curriculum at Santa Monica College is pretty top notch. The faculty is generally well educated and the college offers a variety of classes to satisfy various educational pursuits. The curriculum is surprisingly vast for a community college.

You can also mingle with people in the cafeteria--its always full of people chatting or studying. The quad is also a very busy place, students are seen everywhere hanging out, dancing, laughing. You can also use the track or the pool if you want to work-out for a while in between classes. The beach and the Third Street Promenade is a couple of minutes away.
Food and Dining The food offered is pretty good. It's just a little pricey. They are also trying to get more organic and locally grown food and options for vegetarians.
Dorm Life There are no dorms available but we do have resources that can help with finding a home or roommates.
Academic Rigor The classes are pretty challenging--especially as you move up towards the higher level classes.
Tips for prospective students I really suggest you get to know your professors, it really makes it easier to approach them when you're having problems. Talk to an academic counselor at least once a semester, they will guide you in the right direction and help you with anything they can.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There cops always around campus, but you know sometimes people get jumped/robbed on campus especially at night because it gets really empty.
Greek Life There is none.
Clubs and Activities You have to go out of your way to get involved in things.
Great for these types of students Transfer Students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are none, that I know of.
What to do for fun You can go to the beach, the Santa Monica pier, shopping at the third street promenade, or Venice beach, just to name a few.
Food and Dining On campus food is okay, but way over priced. Since it is in Santa Monica, there are a ton of restaurants off campus that are near by and have delicious food.
Dorm Life There are no dorms.
Academic Rigor It depends on the classes you take, but I did not feel that the classes I took were that difficult.
Tips for prospective students If you are attending here, make sure you follow the IGETC or the requirements for whatever school you want to go to to a tee. Make sure your classes transfer over or else you will be there forever.
In three sentences I think it's a good school for transfer. I got into the school I wanted to from here. The teachers I had were really chill and made class enjoyable.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Go to the beach! There are lots of great restaurants and eateries in the area and closer to the ocean.
Food and Dining It's ok.. A little too much money for starving students. I usually bring my own food if I'm going to be there more than a few hours.
Dorm Life I have no idea how dorm life is, as a matter of fact, I don't think Santa Monica College has dorms as it is a community school intended as a two year or transfer school.
Academic Rigor I think that the amount and extent of academic rigor varies from class to class and from teacher to teacher. I also believe that if a class is not rigorous enough, the student should take steps to broaden their own learning experience.
Tips for prospective students My advice to prospective students would be to start early and don't procrastinate; too many people are in this system and classes get snatched up quickly.
In three sentences Santa Monica College is a wonderful place to begin, or go back to, a college experience. It's small enough to feel comfortable and big enough to feel like a college. The classes are small and you feel like teachers really know who you are.

Greek Life It's a city college, so there's not really a Greek life.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities. The schools international study programs are fantastic.
Great for these types of students Santa Monica College is great for international and low-income students. It's proximity to Los Angeles makes it an excellent place of study for students pursuing the arts, sciences, business and so forth. Motivated students will excel, creative students will flourish and clever students will have the easiest time obtaining the exact education they want.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The library is a great place to study, with computers available for students.
Bang for the buck In proportion to the cost, Santa Monica City college is a fantastic opportunity. Classes are taught by highly regarded professional teachers that care. The courses are challenging and the academic experience is ore than sufficient to prepare students for university.
What to do for fun The school offers many clubs and has a great theater/drama department. Additionally, Santa Monica is a lively city. Students are not far from the ocean, and all the other recreational activities that Santa Monica, Venice and Marina Del Rey have to offer.
Food and Dining The cafeteria is ok. It could be quite a bit better. But given the states budget cuts, I would much rather see money pumped into areas directly related to improvements in academic opportunities for students.
Dorm Life There are no dorms. This is a community college. And one of the top feeder schools to UCLA.
Academic Rigor The schools provides the challenging academic environment that is needed to prep students for obtaining their degrees at a university.

It is important they you do everything you can to get the classes you want. Parking is quite challenging. Devise your parking strategy before attending.

Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs at Santa Monica College, and activities are constantly happening on campus and off campus that are designed for all students.
Great for these types of students Great for students who are looking to get their AA or want to transfer to a university
Bang for the buck I believe that Santa Monica is very reasonably priced, compared to other colleges and universities. The only letdown would have to be the parking permit, its pretty pricey, along with the books but that is always expected at any college or university
What to do for fun Santa Monica Beach has loads of bars and restaurants as does Venice Beach.
Food and Dining Very close to Santa Monica is an out door mall that has everything that you could possible need. Also there is Main Street that has many restaurants and bars. Not to mention Santa Monica Beach and pier is five minutes away. Venice beach is ten Minutes away that also has a great night life and delicious restaurants.
Dorm Life Santa Monica college does not offer an on campus dorms but around campus there are many apartments that are avaliable, all which are close to many attractions and the each
Academic Rigor Students, especially when they start taking specific major classes are constantly being engaged in whatever the class is. professors do an excelent job in interacting with the students and allowing them to participate.
Tips for prospective students My advice would be to visit a counselor as many times as possible, to make sure that you're taking the correct classes, and get to school early because traffic and parking will be a challenge.
In three sentences Overall, I rate Santa Monica College in a scale 1-10, 1 being the worst and 10 being the best a 9. It has a great diversity of students, excellent professors, and counselors that are always willing to help. Also, it is very clean and transferring to a UC school is a lot easier coming from Santa Monica College, only downside is parking.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The Promenade and the beach are right up Pico, approximately 5 minutes from the school. There is the Santa Monica Pier and many shops for students to go and hang out at.
Food and Dining There are a few fast food places around Santa Monica College that students go to. The cafeteria has these California rolls, that happen to be my favorite and what would a college be without Starbuck's?
Academic Rigor There are many transferrable courses students are able to take. Although it is somewhat of a difficult task to add classes in the beginning of each semester, the professors are awesome and there to help you!
Tips for prospective students If you plan on transferring to a four-year university, Santa Monica College is the school to attend. The professors/counselors are there to help students transfer, and there are many clubs students can join to get the appropriate direction. SMC takes education very seriously, so I wouldn't suggest attending SMC to mess around.
In three sentences Santa Monica College is a school that specializes in transferring students to four year universities. The professors/counselors/staff are very helpful individuals who provide all of the information students need in order to succeed. Categories Comments Campus Safety Great security, police work on campus! Feels very safe!!
Greek Life Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society :)
Clubs and Activities Santa Monica has many different clubs and is open to all who want to join. This is a great way to meet new friends, make ever-lasting connections, and have something to put on your college transcript for school participation!!
Great for these types of students Any and all willing to learn.
Bang for the buck Sadly due to budget cuts the amount of space for student admissions is limited and the school is not able to open new classrooms. Also the parking is a mess and forces many students to arrive two hours early, so they have time to find parking, or else risk being late. The school is building a parking lot on the other side of campus but I dont think it will be done realistically anytime soon, especially with these budget cut backs. This is the only thing that isn't to great about SMC, other than that its GREAT!!
What to do for fun Bike, jog, socialize with friends, going to the beach, attend study groups, and participate in school clubs!
Food and Dining The school has two different coffee shops, a pastry shop, and two different food stations and if that doesn't suit you're need you can always walk across or down the street to other open restaurants.
Dorm Life no experience.
Academic Rigor Santa Monica is an academically competitive school and has one of the highest transfer rates in California. But if you put in hard work and dedicate yourself to something you love and are passionate about, this school will be an amazing experience for you to grow and develop yourself as a student.
Tips for prospective students Apply in time for the semester you want so that you are able to sign up for classes; space is limited!!!!
In three sentences Santa Monica has a great variety of classes to chose from, but sadly due to capacity, they have limited space. The school is in a nice safe location only a couple miles away from the beach! Beautiful campus, well designed and put together, and the classes are very easy to find!

Categories Comments Campus Safety It probably ranks the same as any other school. Since it's in Santa Monica, it's probably a bit safer.
Clubs and Activities Haven't participated in any.
Great for these types of students Great for students wanting to take online classes.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Since I only take classes online, I'm not familiar with any unusual traditions or locations on campus.
Bang for the buck California community colleges are cheap. A 3 credit class will run you a little less than $120. That's a steal compared to what I'm use to in other states.
What to do for fun From what I've read, SMC has a variety of sports and extra curriculars to choose from.
Food and Dining I've never eaten hear. I only take online classes. But having walked through the campus before, it looks like they have a good selection of options.
Dorm Life I live off campus so I can't comment on the dorms.
Academic Rigor I've only been taking online classes and have only taken a few, so it's hard for me to judge how difficult the classes are. It really just seems to vary by the type of classes you're taking and the instructor.
Tips for prospective students Sign up for classes early! Classes tend to fill up quickly. If you can't get into your class of choice, wait until the day payment is due. Tons of classes open up because people don't pay by the deadline.
In three sentences Santa Monica College definitely proves it is one of the top community colleges in the country. Their staff is very helpful and they have a wide variety of online classes which allow full time workers to work towards a degree. All of the instructors I've had so far have been great and encouraging.

Greek Life There is no greek life at SMC, but the clubs and SMC community makes it easy to find your group of people.
Clubs and Activities SMC offers an amazing theatre arts and dance program. If you're an entertainer, the classes here are amazing.
Great for these types of students SMC is great for fast pace city lovers who enjoy a diverse population and a goal oriented community.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Take advantage of the college fair!
Bang for the buck SMC will get you to transfer instead of sticking around community college for 5 years.
What to do for fun Third street prominade is right down the street with tons of shopping and food. Aboot Kinney and Venice boardwalk is also a bike ride away. Santa Monica is fun with easy public transportation systems.
Food and Dining There are a few restaurants around campus (with a great pizza place across the strees), but for great food I would head down to third street promonade.
Dorm Life There is student living but not much of it because it's mostly a commuter school.
Academic Rigor The professors have higher standards for SMC students, especially since most of them graduated from UCLA and they are expecting you to go onto a presitious university as well.
Tips for prospective students If you're having trouble getting classes, take abnormal courses that still transfer for IGETC, people forget about some transferable classes. Take advantage of the scholars program if you're elligible and see your conselor twice a semester at least.
In three sentences Santa Monica is one of the best and most diverse community colleges. The students get in, work hard, and transfer. The classes are harder than more community colleges because the competition to get out is higher.

Categories Comments Campus Safety SMC is located in a relatively nice neighborhood. Though we do have incidences happen here and there, if you're smart and aware, you should be fine. I always am!
Greek Life I don't believe we have one.
Clubs and Activities Unfortunately I'm not involved in much of the social/extra curricular world of SMC, but I hear it's great!
Great for these types of students I really do love this school. I highly recommend it to anyone that is not quite sure about which University/career is right for them. I also highly recommend it to any older students (such as myself) who are considering going back to school. It's a wonderful place for growth.
Bang for the buck As an in-state student, it's not terribly pricey. The books aren't cheep, however in my experience, and most student's I've spoken with, it's not difficult to get a BOG waver, and a bit of financial help. As an out of state student, you will definitely get hit hard with fees.
What to do for fun There are many amazing shows put on at our school theater, great clubs, and always something going on in the quad. We have a beautiful library and a full computer lounge. As a student, you can use the pool.
Food and Dining The food in cafeteria is okay. There are a lot of options, but it isn't cheep. There are a few places to eat around campus, but nothing spectacular.
Dorm Life There isn't one!!!
Academic Rigor Some classes are quite difficult, having professors that tech at UCLA and other prestigious Colleges as our teachers definitely makes it more difficult then your average community college. This isn't a school for those who aren't willing to do the work. You have to put in the time and effort if you want to succeed. But the great thing is, 99% of the people there, will do a lot to help you accomplish your goals. We have amazing FREE tutors for most subjects, and many other resources to help you succeed.
Tips for prospective students Find out about all of the many resources, you must do most of this on your own. Most importantly the scholars program, FAFSA, and counseling services. Work hard, ask for help, and form study groups.Get your classes early, as they fill up fast! Don't skip class, it's really important to come prepared, and attend all classes. And really, ASK FOR HELP!

Food and Dining campus food good and lot to chose from and healthy food too. SMC has a lot vending machines and off campus cross the college surround by fast food, restaurants, mini markets and grocery stores
Dorm Life No dorm but i wish they had dorms and think it would help more people so they could go to school because not many people can afford college and work at the same time pay for rent. Dorms you live for free they after you get your Degree you pay them back for school loans and board.
Academic Rigor Going to this school it all ready feel like your going to a 4 year college here. its very tough school it not like any normal city college their a lot of steps to just get to English 1 and other course. the Academics are very good lot of choices to pick from what you want to take. Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus security constantly patrols the school, and I'm grateful for that! Although, there has been quite a few frightening occurrences. Even if the school seems warm and friendly, always be cautious.
Clubs and Activities My favorite part of being at SMC is the chemistry club. There are also many other clubs you can join. They range from cultural-related, sports-related, career-related, and so on.
Great for these types of students If you're a chemistry major, you will definitely enjoy their program here. Compared to what I hear my friends do in lab at schools like UCLA, SMC has cooler lab sessions! It is also rare for junior colleges to have this, but SMC offers an organic chemistry series that is transferable to several four year universities.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Cultural clubs occasionally come out to the quad and serve free cultural food. It's very nice of them to do so!
Bang for the buck SMC is definitely not one of the cheapest junior colleges nor is it a rich school, but the tuition price is worth it.
What to do for fun There are plenty of activities to do on campus. Most of them require you join a club. Chemistry club--only the coolest club ever--has the most fun. We play not only help educate the community about chemistry and try to inspire others, but we play team games and do crazy experiments as well!
Food and Dining I have nothing to complain about their food. They offer all sorts of food on campus. There is also a pizza place and Subway situated conveniently across the campus.
Dorm Life SMC doesn't offer dormitories. The cost of living in the city is also pricey for a poor student like me!
Academic Rigor Just because a school is a junior college does not mean you should underestimate it! Keep up with the lectures and know your stuff!
Tips for prospective students Check out the Welcome Center and talk to the staff members there. They are extremely friendly and will help you in getting started at the school!
In three sentences SMC has not only one of the most beautiful campuses I've ever seen, but has some of the friendliest staff members I've ever met. If SMC was a four year university offering a bachelor's degree, I would not mind graduating from here. I'm proud to be a student here!

Bang for the buck Compared to nearby UC schools the under $50 a unit really is a great deal. Couple hundred per semester depending on grants and such.
What to do for fun go to the beach, the pier, the promenade, venice beach... there are so many local activities along with nearby things to do like the LACMA, the MOCA, the Getty, the griffith observatory, LA zoo, hollywood and much more.
Food and Dining Wide variety right outside SMC. Everything close by and lots of mom and pop shops walking distance to relax at during lunch or after class.
Dorm Life Plenty of housing near or close to campus with free bus system. All near the beach, the promenade and restaurants!
Academic Rigor So far the difficulty and work load vary greatly depending on each class and professor.

Categories Comments Campus Safety This campus is quite safe. There are rarely any incidents on campus, and those are usually quickly reported to the student body. We have our own campus police who are based just across the street from the Main Campus.
Greek Life None.
Clubs and Activities There are quite a few clubs on campus, from Honors Societies such as Phi Theta Kappa, to UNICEF, to the Gay-Straight Alliance, and even history and psychology clubs. If any of your interests are not represented on club, you can start your own (with permission, of course).
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have an organic learning garden for those interested in growing their own food.
Bang for the buck This is one of the less costly places to get your education, and many students transfer to great universities from here.
What to do for fun SMC has activity hour from 11:15 to 12:35 every Tuesday and Thursday, in which clubs meet and during which special events are held on the quad, such as Club Row, in which you can check some of said clubs out, and the College Fair, in which prospective students can acquire more info from college reps from institutions like UC Berkeley and USC.
Food and Dining The cafeteria is a bit expensive, but offers much better fare than other campuses, from what I've heard. From eggs and bagels to burritos and pizza, you should be able to find something to tide you over. Eating every meal there could be quite pricey though. And if you are unsatisified with the food there, you can just look at the places around campus, such as Burger King, Subway, a mexican food place, and Boba thai tea place.
Dorm Life None.
Academic Rigor Some classes can be truly painful, especially for those with intense majors, like bio. However, every class is just a matter of wise time management, and knowing your own study habits and success with those habits well enough to adjust them to whatever class you have to deal with.
Tips for prospective students Register ASAP, even if you are unsure of whether or not you will be attending SMC, so that you can get a better registration date. Better yet, if you can, join the Scholars Program for a priority registration date. Classes fill up quickly. There are plenty of friendly people around, but joining a club which shares your interest makes things easier.
In three sentences Santa Monica College is an excellent place to go to school. There are some wonderful, truly passionate teachers there, and quite a diversity of students. The campus is located in the heart of Santa Monica, and there is no shortage of fun activities to do around here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Not so safe at night if you are taking night classes.
What to do for fun A lot of student clubs on campus. Otherwise, the beach is a good choice.
Food and Dining I try to avoid dining here personally. But since it aren't a lot choices around the campus, school cafeteria is still a popular option. Two Starbucks on campus for coffee lovers to boost energy.
Dorm Life No dorm available on campus. Rent around campus ranges from 500-1200 for a bedroom.
Academic Rigor Depends on who's your professor. Some professor do cares about students, but some just reads from the book. Also, depends on your study styles.
Tips for prospective students Plan early if you would like to transfer. SMC offers most classes you will need to transfer to a four year university. Nice campus environment, just a couple blocks to the beach. Great weather, enjoy!

Food and Dining There are small restaurants and fast food nearby that you can go to when you have a break between classes. It's good to have when you have extra time.
Dorm Life I live at home still.
Academic Rigor It really depends on the professor. Some professors have a much more difficult course than others might. Go on websites that rate professors before you enroll in a class.
Tips for prospective students Go see a counselor before you enroll in classes so that you don't waste your time on unnecessary classes. Don't wait until the last minute for anything because it'll make things much harder on yourself.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus Safety at Santa Monica is by far one of the best I've seen in any college. Respect is truly valued here.
What to do for fun There are many clubs on and off campus, but the main activity to do for fun at Santa Monica is relax at the beach. Since the beach is so close it's pretty hard to say no to an invitation.
Food and Dining The food is great, but, to be honest, it is hard to find time to eat with all the running around you'll have to do. On the bright side, there are many convenient stores and fast-food places around each campus, for those of you who will be trying to save your money.
Dorm Life There are no dorms on campus, since it is a community college, but there are beautiful apartments pretty close to the campus(es). I have to say, they are pretty pricey, though.
Academic Rigor The courses are very challenging, but worth every tear and struggle. The course levels are pretty high, similar to four- year institutions.
Tips for prospective students Try to sign up for classes early, they crowd up pretty quickly, but no worries, you can always crash a course. Also, build relationships with your classmates and professors as soon as possible; trust me when I tell you YOU WILL NEED ALL THE HELP YOU CAN GET!!!
In three sentences Santa Monica is one of the best community colleges in the state, #1 in transfer rate. The professors are great and the student population is so diverse. The campus is beautiful, even during the winter.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Very nice campus. Good teachers. Great location.
What to do for fun The beach is really close! Dowtown Santa Monica, Venice, and dowtown LA is nearby as well. Grab a friend and begin exploring!
Food and Dining There any many restaurants around the school. You just got to look for them and see what you want. The school kitchen is pretty standard in terms of what you can buy.
Dorm Life I can't really comment, but the location here in Southern California can't get any better!
Academic Rigor I am in the Nursing program and so far, my classes have been somewhat challenging.
Tips for prospective students Whatever transcripts, financial aid or others issues you need to address with Admissions and records, I recommend getting it fixed early before you start school here. Admissions is heavily understaffed and you will have headaches if you try to fix a problem by the time school starts.
In three sentences The library is a good place to study. The student population is diverse as well. Make sure to plan ahead with parking. as it is becoming more and more difficult to find parking!

Categories Comments What to do for fun Since the beach is only a mile away, you can go to the Santa Monica pier and 3rd street Promande for shopping. Venice Beach is 3 miles away and the broad walk is very intertaining and will see various of things that the people there do. A very awesome experience.
Food and Dining I would say that Tender Greens, Wolf Gang Polk, and Bucca De Bepu are three great restaurants at the promenade. There are also several restaurants near the beach that are very good and also the dining at the pier is really good as well.
Dorm Life Housing is an unforgettable experience, you get to meet people from all over the world. You get to learn about different cultures and experience how it is living on your own. You become a more independent and responsible person.
Academic Rigor Aim for the best and be responsible when it comes to getting school work done. Don't procrastinate and find a way to motivate yourself so that you can keep on going. Classes are challenging but its on you to make an effort and get good grades, try to stay on task and apply for internships regarding your major. Speak to your counselor at least twice a semester.
Tips for prospective students Stay active in a way where you can join many clubs and associations as possible, for example the Scholars Program and the Alpa Gamma Sigma. These programs will help you so much when you try to transfer to a university, such as UC's or USC.
In three sentences I could honestly say that Ive learned so much in the time Ive been attending SMC. With all sincerity I have learned, achieved, became a better student once I attended Santa Monica College. Its an outstanding community College, if students weren't doing so great in High School I really recommend Santa Monica for a better education and hope for a new outlook.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I haven't had any problems, but there have been a few cases of theft. Be smart and hide your laptops and expensive Apple Products. Also, look both ways before crossing the street. This is located in Los Angeles after all.
Great for these types of students Students wanting to transfer to a four year university, or any other college.
Bang for the buck Financial Aid is offered, so that's great. However, it gets very competitive when signing up for classes. If you want a priority date, then I suggest joining clubs or athletics. First year students usually get to sign up first.
What to do for fun Santa Monica College is very close to the beach and Santa Monica Pier! Take the big blue bus all the way down heading west on Pico, (or drive) and you're there! The Promenade is also close by if you're bored.
Food and Dining The main campus now has food trucks across the street. There is also a Subway, Burger King, and Pizzaria across as well. The cafeteria food is ok, but slightly expensive. At the AET campus (for entertainment design) there are food trucks along the side of the campus.
Dorm Life There are no dorms here.
Academic Rigor There are different types of professors here, some using an old school method of power points and text work, others bringing new ideas to help you successfully complete a course. The professor's I've had are always enthusiastic with what they teach.
Tips for prospective students It's ok if you're still undecided about a major; with many different types of courses in all subjects, it will certainly inspire you to visualize your future. A HUGE tip would be to NOT PROCRASTINATE. Yes, homework is spaced but it will pile up eventually. Don't drive? The Big Blue bus and shuttles run conveniently to all campuses. Woa to traffic!
In three sentences This community college is great for students wanting to transfer to a four year university, getting an Associates Degree, earning college credit, or even brushing up your skills in different areas! Their art program is great, and different departments are growing. Many Professors here are UCLA alumni and professors, so you are in good hands. It's a very diverse environment.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is of no concern to the student because there are several securities in all the campuses and they are there to serve for the students protection.
What to do for fun The question should actually be, What ISNT for fun? because everywhere you go is fun. You have the beach less than a mile away, you have the mall, many parks, etc.. People will love it.
Food and Dining You have every restaurant you can think of in your surroundings. If you're in the mood for some Indian food or Mexican food or Italian, American, anything; is everywhere.
Dorm Life I do not live on campus, but I've heard that the dorms people get are beautiful. It isn't far from the campus. It's walking distance!
Academic Rigor Instructors are very strict when it comes to grades. It is not like high school at all. You are literally on your own. But although they may seem very mean at first, they try and show you how important having an education is.
Tips for prospective students I would have to say that SMC is just amazing. Any student that goes there will fall in instant love with the environment. Everything around is so convenient. You get to ride the bus for free to take you to classes, everyone is so nice and cool, the beach is not that far away, the mall is just amazing, and I just know that students will love SMC.
In three sentences Santa Monica College is a very social college. The teachers really prove they're passion for education. Everyone is very social.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is an open campus in a big city which can be overwhelming but the campus is not that big and there is always a campus police officer making rounds, there have been some incidents but those tend to happen at night, I would recommend scheduling classes just during the day if possible.
Greek Life don't have that
Clubs and Activities There is an assigned activity hour twice a week for clubs to meet, there is a lot of clubs out there and it is really easy to start your own.
Great for these types of students smc is perfect for someone who is looking to save money, looking to transfer to a 4 year, for someone looking just for a vocational degree, and there is a lot of international students who take advantage of smc
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Very Environmentally conscious
Bang for the buck Amazing price, however housing is expensive, since there are no dorms students are forced to either stay with their parents or find a place, apartments around the area are ridiculously expensive, it is also really hard to find a roommate.
What to do for fun beach is a few block away, third street promenade is even closer. It is definitely at a great location, however there is rarely a chance to enjoy those great things because of the lack of social life.
Food and Dining There is not a lot of options and it is quite expensive, however the options that they do have taste great.
Dorm Life No dorm life,
Academic Rigor It really depends, there are classes that are shockingly easy and some that are shockingly hard, it all depends on the professor. For being a community college they have amazing classes, especially classes from the scholars program.
Tips for prospective students Definitely join a program that gives priority enrollment because classes get full really soon, there are many amazing professors as well as a few bad ones, using rate my professor and grade distribution will ease the enrolling process every semester.
In three sentences Great for saving money, honestly the best decision I have made, they have a lot of transfer agreements which really makes the whole process less nerve racking.

Bang for the buck AMAZING Bang for your buck!
What to do for fun ENJOY THE SUNSHINE (usually)
Food and Dining Good selection in the caf. Not the largest, but you won't get tried very fast.
Dorm Life Non-existent.
Academic Rigor It depends on the classes you are taking and the track you are pursuing. If you are on the Pre-Med track, classes will be challenging.
Tips for prospective students Don't get lost in the crowd. Make new friends and start hanging out and eating with them in addition to studying. Ambitious and determined friends = Better grades.
In three sentences Great for all types of students. It is a wonderful place for very passionate and ambitious students, but also gives a great college atmosphere where clubs fairs occur and there is plenty of social opportunities and ways to make new friends. Its a very friendly place!

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is very safe, especially at night. There is a police station across the street if anyone is in danger.
Clubs and Activities There are hundreds of clubs at SMC.
Great for these types of students Students who feel as if they aren't ready to attend a University should come here to prepare themselves. Also, SMC is ideal for anyone who is struggling financially.
Bang for the buck Costs and tuition here are great. Only $26 per unit whereas at a University, it would costs hundreds per unit.
What to do for fun Santa Monica College has clubs that anyone can join, which are entertaining and look great on transcripts.
Food and Dining There is one cafeteria on campus that majority of students go to. There's a small market there, cafes, pizza, etc.
Dorm Life There aren't any dorms at Santa Monica College; however, there are apartments across the street and nearby.
Academic Rigor Classes here are fairly easy when students pay attention and are on task. Some professors give homework assignments while others base grades off of midterms and finals.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to take Math and English courses first. Registering for classes can be very tough depending on when registration date is. Make sure to read reviews on professors before deciding to enroll in their classes. Professor reviews are quite accurate.
In three sentences Santa Monica College prepares students for transferring to four year universities. Taking general education classes here saves thousands of dollars. The staff here is very helpful.

Food and Dining They have good food, but not enough vegan options.
Dorm Life There's no dorm life, but they provide you with a website that helps you find roommates.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus police is directly to the back of Santa Monica College and it is a pretty safe place to be for the most part.
Clubs and Activities There are numerous clubs and they help out with college applications because they are usually intended for specific majors, minorities or great causes.
Great for these types of students For hispanic or african american students, the aldante or black collegians club is a great route to help guide you through college and possibly transfers.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Most people hang out at the cayton lab where you get free $15 printing each semester.
Bang for the buck Santa Monicca College is full of people of all ages who are taking classes for fun or trying to gain insight, or simply trying to transfer into a university. It has the highest transfer rate and the professors and students alike help encourage this.
What to do for fun The beach isn't too far. Santa Monica pier is down the street. Dance shows at the Eli & Edyth Broad Stage are twice a semester.
Food and Dining There aren't too many places to eat at Santa Monica College, but the places that they have are okay. The cafeteria has great food, a little too overpriced for me, though.
Academic Rigor All courses are worth studying for. You learn something new from any major you're in and the professors know a lot and have a passion for what they teach.
Tips for prospective students Form study groups or be completely committed. The professors are really informative and great at what they do. They care about the students learning rather than a simple easy A.
In three sentences Santa Monica is one of the most diverse places to learn. This kind of environment gives you a general array of competition among all races rather than just a selected few. You are able to advance yourself at a higher level.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus is very, very safe. Avoid too late classes though, even the safest places seem sketchy in pitch dark. The area around the campus on Pico can be dangerous if you're alone late at night. As long as you're not asking for trouble, it is perfectly safe.
Clubs and Activities You need to look for clubs online by yourself. They are rarely promoted, but I promise we have tons of clubs/events/activities, you just have to search for them. Don't wait for your second or third semester to take part. If you participate in the first semester, you can run for boards/commitees in the second. That would look fantastic on transcripts. PS. Avoid taking classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 11:15-12:30... That's when most if not all clubs meet, so if you have class then you won't be able to join.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Parking, I hear, is horrendous. Asian people (not the Asian Americans, the international ones) hang out in cliques and don't speak English unless you force a conversation in English. They're nice people, just not great at blending into a wonderfully diverse community.
What to do for fun Just a heads up - 'fun' will probably be limited to the west side of LA if you don't have a car. Not too much of a problem though, the school offers a sticker that lets you ride the Big Blue Bus (Santa Monica bus system) for free, so getting around SM is a breeze, most of the time that is. For fun - 3rd street, SM Pier, beaches, Venice, Westwood, lots and lots of shopping, movies, etc. Hollywood is not too far either, usually a bus ride away I would say. You'll love it, SM is an amazing place to be :)
Food and Dining The cafeteria is pretty good. Not too much, but if you're hungry I guarantee you'll find something for your taste. Some vegan/veggie options. Starbucks is served in the cafeteria and in a small coffee stall on the other side of campus. Around the school - not much, just fast food. It is a short bus ride to 3rd street so if you've got time in between classes or during lunch, definitely go there as you'll have a million food options to choose from.
Dorm Life It's commuter college, so if you want a dorm-ish experience, find students to stay with. Try Craigslist, or the school website has some resources.
Academic Rigor Not difficult, if you take the right classes with the right professors. Look them up at ratemyprofessors.com before enrolling. Get your English and Math done earlier, and also get your IGETC requirement plan organized as soon as you get here.
Tips for prospective students Start taking opportunities in your first semester. Get involved on campus, join clubs, and be social. In LA, who you know and how likable you are among peers definitely counts. Be friendly, use campus resources, be active and you'll stand out.
In three sentences It's great and has a lot to offer (for a community college) if you make an effort. You will not be spoonfed in this college like you perhaps would be at a four-year university. You need to go out of your way and work hard to be a successful student.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are pods in every corner of the campus and security at all times. We do get some random strays from time to time, but it's usually people coming from the beach or kids from the neighboring Junior High.
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs and activities to join. Sports, music, performing arts, education, health, student. Too many titles. They are advertised around the school year round so you will definitely be able to figure out which one will be best for you.
Bang for the buck I took a theater class there and there performing arts center is worthwhile. The students and teachers are awesome. Entertainment and art are at its finest here at SMC.
What to do for fun Join a team or hang out on our strip. There are tons of different groups of people ready to welcome you. You're bound to meet some friends here whether it be in class our out. Essentially you will always end up a the beach! It is walking distance along with the pier.
Food and Dining The cafeteria is very diverse. Lots of different tea and coffee spots for late at night or early in the morning. Also, great breakfast buffets and lunch specials. All of the cooks and clerks are also very upbeat.
Dorm Life Unfortunately, there aren't dorms. The campus is located in Santa Monica, which is essentially Los Angeles. When you live in Los Angeles everything is 20 minutes away from each other. Commuting is a breeze.
Academic Rigor The work is challenging but worthwhile. It prepares you for the future courses. Do not take too many challenging courses together either. split some electives up with the more rigorous courses.
Tips for prospective students Even if you are only taking one class right now, just keep going. As long as you stay focused and have a goal all things are possible.
In three sentences I love the campus so close to the water. I love the variety of classes. I especially love the time and effort the counselors take with you.
