Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Utilize the tutoring center as well as the computer labs and study rooms. All of these services are covered by tuition and free to the students. They are a big help and available at any time throughout the semester but are constantly overlooked by students.
Bang for the buck The average cost for classes is affordable as well as cost of supplies and textbooks. There are always students willing to help with book purchasing such as reselling books. The cafeteria on campus provides good food at a good costs and the student services available through tuition costs are a big help and definitely worth the price.
Am enjoying being here There are friendly student clubs and plenty fun activities that take place throughout the semester. The student activities center always goes out of their way to bring a fun atmosphere out in between classes with games, music, and free food.
Am learning a lot The instructors here are always eager to help students out in any way possible within reason. They target subjects well and utilize many different resources from textbooks to web sites.

Categories Comments What to do for fun What you can do for fun is go to any activites STC is holding. Other than that pretty much all you can do is go shopping, to the movies, or any party around that you may be interested in.
Food and Dining Depends, not much to do around here depending which campus you attend. Pecan campus has more variety of food and dining if you don't mind driving around town.
Dorm Life There are no dorms offered at South Texas College, but the commute to this college is relatively close. It's close to home anyways, so you don't really need a dorm.
Tips for prospective students If you plan to attend this college, make sure to attend class each day, and keep track of your grades. Make sure to hold all graded assignments, because some teachers forget to write that grade in their grade book. Also a BIG recommendation is to sit as close to the front as possible, because you'll hear important due dates and the professor is more willing to know you and help you out.
In three sentences South Texas College is a very friendly college. Tuition is affordable, and faculty in the Financial Aid office are really helpful in assisting you. STC is close to home, and I don't have to miss out on important family dates.

Am enjoying being here I enjoy being there because classes aren't too big so you can get the extra help you need.
Am learning a lot You will definitely learn a lot they have great instructors that teach well and are understanding. I have not had a problem with any class or instructor that I have taken.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If any student planning to get a heard start in college, this school is for you. Its not only financially cheaper and wiser but it is close to home, and some schools hire professors to come and teach at your school.
Tips for prospective students My advice would be take as many college courses you can in high school. You may not know who you are or what you may want to do, but after experiencing something, you learn what's nothing to you. It lets you grow as a person and personally for me helped me strive for something. I enrolled in as a History major but leaving the institution seeking to be a communication major. It made me realize there is other options and should choose wisely.
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying this whole process because it is making my the process easier of what University I'd eventually like to attend. Before I enrolled in classes I didn't know who I was, or what I wanted to do with my life after high-school. But, after taking these steps I somewhat feel like I'm a young adult. I make choices everyday that will affect me for my upcoming educational years. Being enrolled in an actual college make in high school was the best decision I could ever made.
Am learning a lot I am currently a high school student and is taking night classes at the local community college, in order to learn as much as possible before I enter a four year University. This whole experience has been stressful but life changing as well. At times it can be overwhelming with the amount of double work I am dealt with, but at the end of the day I know I am only benefiting myself, If I want to prosper in life. This school is preparing me a great deal with the whole college process. I know what I'll face in the near future with a University because I am dealing with so much as it is. But I am only looking forward and enjoying the steps I take.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I can safely assure you that the security is more than doubled in South Texas College, it is honestly a eco-friendly college and enviroment.
Clubs and Activities There a few clubs that are available for some majors like Kinesiology, Communications, Drama, and Science.
Great for these types of students If you are a Theatre or Communication Major there is a building called the Cooper Center where everyone meets that have the same major, many of the same majors are friends and meet daily at that building either during class or after class.
What to do for fun If you have friends that live close by that go to South Texas College, it is definetely a great place to kick back and hang out with your friends. For fun, there are areas where you can sit and buy food at the school cafeteria or even gather with your friends and see what activities the college is having.
Tips for prospective students I highly recommend South Texas College because it gives you tons of experience and knowledge that you really need to know for your career whether its a science major, an arts major, or a business major its generally a great school to go to.
In three sentences South Texas College is definetely the place to be when it comes from starting off your college career. This college will challenge you to the maximum level that you need to be as a professional and as a college student. The instructors help in every step of the way. Most of teachers there are certified and have a lot of experience in the field you may be studying for. Plus, the security is beyond secure.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are always STC safety patrols, although no police officers on campus, there should be. The patrols are usually on bikes, walking, or standing in certain locations on campus. There should also be servalliance bu ther is not on campus, well at least from what I know of, because I have not seen any cameras. There should be
Greek Life As far as at the moment South Texas College does not have a Greek Life on campus. UTPA in the other city in Edinburg, TX does have greek life.
Clubs and Activities There is a big variety of clubs at South Texas College, but from the top of my head these are the ones I can think of. Student Government Club, Media Club, VAM Club (Visual Arts Music) W.I.L.D Club (Writer's in Literary Discussion) Communications Club, Buisness Club, Music DJ mixing Club, Entreprenure Club.
Great for these types of students Studying is great for the type of students that love to study and be alone, there are study rooms all over the campus that is readily available. Yet, for this a great place to study would be the Rainbow room above the library, that will help you out get your crunching study time down.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Traditions, well it is called South Texas College, we are located in the Rio Grande Valley and most of the people down here are Hispanic and/or Latino, Mexican American. Although, there is a variety of Black and White students, some of the traditons we have are Mexican music playing during student acivities, and folklorico dancers and a Mexican dance team. We do have a smoking section that should be moved, but that's about as unusual as it gets. Everyone is really nice on campus.
Bang for the buck Tuition is the most affordable here at STC, and if you get financial aid help even better! Althouigh the lunch here is expensive, but the vending machines are affordable. But this school is great and worth the tuition, it is affordable.
What to do for fun There is a great variety of clubs to join, from Student Government, the Media Club, Student Leardership Academy, and Communications Club. This is aweome to get students engaged. Another thing are STC's bulletin boards, students always post events, such as music shows, art gallerys, festival events, etc, so that's also something fun to do is to find something fun to do that weekend.
Food and Dining The cafeteria is pretty ordinary, they do have tasty food, but not too healthy conscience. They do have vegetables, yet not flavored, they do offer alot of food so if your hungry except the prices are not too great. A bottle of a drink can cost about 3-4 dollars and the food isn't too affordable. I suggest you bring your own lunch or come with breakfast in your tummy.
Dorm Life I do not live in the dorms near here. But I have seen students crossing the street to get to class and they look happy to live as close as they do. They are always on time, I'd assume.
Academic Rigor Academics here are challenging and the English departments does assign alot of research papers so get ready to research your topics. The government classes are intense and very intellectual and smart so know your government. History is rich and covers all aspects of the century starting from the 1800's. It is a very enriching topic. The professors love to teach when it comes to the history department. The academic rigor is very passionate.
Tips for prospective students Tips for students, is to turn your assignments in on time or before hand, if not you will fall behind, and get stuck with a bad reputation for the class. And partners will not want to team up with you. Participate in class so your professor can see that you are making the effort, and introduce yourself in class when your first response is presented in class, this is so your professor knows who you are and recognizes your class participation. That seems to be very important to the professors here at South Texas College.
In three sentences South Texas College is very resourceful as far as thier computer labs go. They are very clean and the staff is quite nice and the students activities that go on here are exciting. South Texas College has a lot of fun clubs to join, there is something for everyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You see security on every side of the campus. On the campus a state trooper is always on duty also. If you have to take classes at night there is no fear because the parking lots are well lit.
Clubs and Activities At STC many clubs are available for you to join. Maybe you do not want to commit to a specific club, you can still attend the clubs monthly speakers and activities. I recommend joining the student leadership academy. I really enjoyed it and met a lot of new people.
Great for these types of students STC is great for all types of people. If you have been out of school for a while or fresh out of high school, this college will benefit you.
Food and Dining The cafeteria has extended its hours, which is nice. If you have classes after five you are stuck buying junk food from the vending machines, unless you bring your own food. The food is good, but a little over priced.
Dorm Life No dorms at this college.
Academic Rigor Some people might say STC is not hard at all, but it depends on you. If you would like more challenging classes there are many to choose from.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is very safe. In 2010 there was one car theft and three assaults. That is not bad for a campus that has over 20,000 students.
Great for these types of students South Texas College is great for all types of students from traditional students that are right out of high school to those like me who are over 30 and going back to school.
Bang for the buck From a financial aspect South Texas College will give you the best bang for your buck. You will be able to take a lot of different classes and have a chance to major in some really great programs. To give you an idea for a four year Bachelors of Nursing costs about $30,000. That is from day on to graduation. Where as an Associates in Nursing, which would still give you the title RN, will cost you about $12000-$15000 from start to finish. That goes the same form some of the other programs as well.
What to do for fun For fun on campus most of it is socialization, but there are also a lot of clubs that you can join, and there is a small recreation room as well.
Food and Dining Food on campus is ok and fairly priced. Best bet for food on campus, make friends with someone in Culinary Arts so they can make food and share it with you.
Dorm Life There is no dorm life since there are no dorms on campus.
Academic Rigor The classes range in difficulty from fairly easy like music appreciation to the very advanced like calculus and microbiology. The certificate programs range from HVAC to CNA and everything in between. The associate programs range from Business to Criminal Justice to Nursing. There are a lot of choices for you to pick from.
Tips for prospective students Your best bet as a prospective student to remember to take advantage of everything that the school offers, from financial aid to the tutoring center, and remember to schedule some time between classes so you can socialize and eat.
In three sentences South Texas College is a great campus for people looking for Associate or Certificate programs, a few Bachelors programs, and is also a good jumping off point to other Colleges or Universities. The Instructors are really friendly for the most part, and so are the students. All in all South Texas College is great place to start or finish your College career.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is relatively safe even at night. There are securities that roam around from time to time to make sure nobody gets abducted or put to harms way, furthermore, there are free telephones in the campuses to call for help or 911 in case of dire emergencies.
Greek Life There is not an official fraternity or sorority club that is recognized by the campus with each houses as their base, but there are still fraternity and sororities to join based on different areas, aspects or criteria that a prospective student is seeking.
Clubs and Activities There are many to choose from such as the science club, art club, choir club, sorority and fraternity clubs; and many more that truly enhances a person's skill and interest.
Great for these types of students Such students that are undecided what to study for college and just wanted to experience what college life is all about. Just taking a few classes would really inspire a person to consider what path to take for the future.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I enjoy the fact that from time to time, the American Heart Association come by for the blood bank so anybody that would like to donate is more than welcome and a snack is given afterwards. There are also competitions every semester for art students and non art students to join wherein they could win cash prizes and much more.
Bang for the buck It all boils down to getting the best education for less. If you want to be smart about saving and getting ahead in your career, South Texas College is a good candidate and also offers much more than just meets the eye.
What to do for fun There are a myriad of school organizations to join to ease-up boredom and to widen the vision of a person's career. Also, occasionally, there are activities or diversions provided by the school for students such as rock climbing and moon jumping.
Food and Dining Excellent food! The meals are always made fresh everyday and there are a variety of foods to choose from with affordable prices. I can not complain.
Dorm Life I live very close to school so I have no say or experience regarding dorm life, but I have heard that it is fun and gives you a sense of independence being away from home and preparing yourself to face what is out there.
Academic Rigor Depending on the classes you take and the professors, some courses can really be challenging so make sure to gather up more information about a particular class as well as the strategy of a prospective teacher as well as working hard to learn what you must to succeed.
Tips for prospective students Do not be reluctant to ask questions, go to counseling and advisers regarding school because it is essential to know all information and have the right guidance to be successful. Be assertive and keep up with the changes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety They do have security, but most of the thefts that happen on campus never get solved.
What to do for fun Every so often the college has an event in which they have rock walls and different games to play. The downfall is that they removed the game room.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good, but I have only gone to eat at the cafeteria once.
Dorm Life No dorms
Academic Rigor The professors are all different, so some classes only need you to show up and some you really have to hit the books.
Tips for prospective students Do not wait to sign up for classes and do research on the professor that you are going to sign up with. Right when the classes open up for registration start your search. Do not always trust ratemyprofessor.com.
In three sentences South Texas College is a good local college to go to, but it is hard to find a good professors to take your classes with. Most of the professors that I have had experience with were either frustrated by questions or just want to sleep. I have even had a professor that would belittle his/her students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You will see many security guards here, unlike other colleges. They are on nearly every corner and walk students across busy roads and around campus if asked. Security also monitors inside the school and I've never once caught them slackign off or incapable, that is what I call awesome.
Great for these types of students This school is great for those who attended university previously and found that it was too impersonal and very by the book learning. Here they mix it up with hands on, events, demonstrations, and just overall fun methods of learning in comparison.
Bang for the buck The price for the school is minimal and offers plenty. You have online learning, different locations and many, many classes to fit into any degree plan. They offer such a wide variety of degrees in useful fields that it seems ridiculous to pay more for the same elsewhere.
What to do for fun Make friends and get out with them, you deserve a break. With their campuses all over the region you are likelky to find something you will enjoy be it shopping, bowling, skating, movies, and more! While it is good to hit the books remember that if you don't maintain some kinda' fun in your life you will quickly burn yourself out.
Food and Dining We have a great cafeteria that offers a wide variety to suit any palate. There is even home made specialites and treats that are competitively priced with fast food and healthier to boot. It's hard to go hungry on this campus.
Dorm Life This college does not offer any kind of housing. You are expected to have your own housing whether with parents or on your own. I recommend looking into splitting the cost of living with parents or friends.
Academic Rigor This school demands quite a bit even for not being a university. They expect you to reflect this schools image in a positive light and as such do everything and anything they can to improve your education. You are expected to keep up with a hearty amount of schoolwork but it is never overwhelming.
Tips for prospective students Prepare yourself mentally, school changes and while it's not hard to adapt if you are not willing to do so you will be left behind. Don't be afraid to reach out to the staff, they care here and will help you find your way. Ultimately remember to do something you love, there is so much offered it is ridiculous not to!
In three sentences The environment is warm and welcoming. Teachers actually care about the students here. I feel the quality of education rivals 4 year colleges on this basis alone.

Categories Comments What to do for fun This is not a university, so there isn't too many things to do, but the thing is you shouldn't be worrying about the college experience. You should worry about finishing your education with as little to no debt as possible.
Tips for prospective students Before attending a university right after graduating from high school, you should go to South Texas College first. During this time, you can get your Associates Degree. Then once you finish with the Associates, you can transfer to another university.
In three sentences This college is great because it is close to home. This allows students to start their education here before transfering to another university. It is also very affordable.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Security staff is very visible all around campus although I don't exactly know how to call them if needed (maybe there are signs but I just haven't noticed). Parking lots are well-lit. STC has a campus-wide notification system (through email, text, phone call) in case of emergency.
What to do for fun There are student activities/festivals during special occasions and holidays, clubs to join, gym, art gallery, recitals/shows/talks to attend. However, I don't believe we have any sports team (football, basketball, etc.).
Food and Dining There is a small cafeteria on campus which serves the usual college menu. The Pecan campus is located near several fast food restaurants (McDonald's, Subway, Church's, Sonic, Jack in the Box, etc.)
Dorm Life No dorm
Academic Rigor So far, the instructors that I've had do require students to work hard for their grade. They do provide many opportunities for extra credit. The pace is quite fast because I feel that towards the end of the semester, we're just trying to discuss everything that's left before the Finals. There are many great instructors (majority are very approachable and helpful), just don't be one of those students who choose their class based on which instructor will give the easy A.
Tips for prospective students Try to get early morning classes if you can so you don't have to worry about parking. 9 am to 12 noon are the most frustrating hours. If you're an international student, you really can't find much help in terms of scholarships. You're going to have to find it on your own.
In three sentences STC would be great for college students who want to finish their core subjects first and then transfer to a 4-year university. The campus, especially the main one at Pecan, is still expanding which unfortunately results in a horrible parking situation for everyone (get to class early or you'll spend 30 minutes looking for a spot). The student population is composed mainly of Hispanics and of working students.
