Categories Comments Great for these types of students Flexible, open minded students who want to enjoy their college experience Hard working students who want to finish as quickly as they can Anyone who wants to expand their knowledge base in a positive, supportive environment
Tips for prospective students Get involved-the more you put into your college experience the more you'll get out of it. Don't be afraid to ask questions - Sometimes questions left unasked are missed opportunities to learn. Stay focused - whether you are a freshman just coming in or a senior on the home stretch wasted time is time lost for good. That's something no one can afford in this economy.
Bang for the buck For a private school Southern isn't really that expensive. They also offer scholarship options for that extra financial push.
Did enjoy being here Southern offers a variety of activities to keep you busy while you aren't hitting the books. I really enjoyed the social mixers and the athletic program. Intramural sports and other extracurricular activities allow you to meet a greater number of people from a variety of majors. People who can later become a great resource as you are exploring all the career options Southern offers.
Did learn a lot I definitely learned a lot about myself as well as my subject material. There are many opportunities at Southern to find a path that fits your personality and interests. If you aren't sure what you want to do with your life Southern has advisers, student mentors, and counselors that can help you find a career choice or two suited to your lifestyle.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very present on campus and known for being a tad over zealous in handing out student parking tickets. However it is nice that they are close by at all times and very available to students if an emergency arrises.
Greek Life non-existant
Clubs and Activities Some clubs are stronger and more present than others. It is up to you to get involved by going to the student club fair at the beginning of the fall semester. There are a ton of clubs and if there isn't one that you want, you can start your own.
Great for these types of students Southern is a great place for students who want an awesome college experience without the blatant presence of constant partying and drinking. Students who wish to establish and maintain a strong connection with God are sure to find multiple ways to do so at Southern.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are a lot of cool places on campus, like the Goliath wall and the biology trails. Christmas on the promenade, Asian night, and Strawberry festival are all fun activities unique to Southern, among many others.
Bang for the buck Southern is expensive and their financial aid is not the best. However, depending on what you value for your college education, it is worth it.
What to do for fun Downtown Chattanooga is pretty fun. On Southern's campus, there are the biology trails, which are beautiful and well-maintained. Be sure to get involved with intramural sports, which are a huge deal at Southern.
Food and Dining The cafeteria has a variety of options, all vegetarian. There is a fully stocked grocery store on campus where students can purchase items using their meal plan. There are also three other eating options on campus, as well a many local dining places in the area.
Dorm Life Dorms are well-maintained and generally fun to live in. If you are female, prepare yourself for more restrictions in the women's housing.
Academic Rigor The academics can be rigorous depending on your major and how much you wish to challenge yourself. Do not expect to sail through your time at Southern without studying, especially if you are considering a career in the medical field.
Tips for prospective students Don't spend all your time in your room. Get out and meet people by going to the numerous school sponsored events that are held multiple times a week. Take advantage of the trips offered by the Outdoor Education department. Don't eat at the CK too often.
In three sentences Southern is a unique school that aims to prepare students academically and spiritually for their future. Though it is relatively small, the student body is very diverse. Categories Comments Campus Safety They will not hesitate to give you a ticket for being parked in the wrong spot. I trust that they would be there to help but have had no first hand experience.
Greek Life None.
Clubs and Activities Intraumurals is a great way to get involved. There are also many clubs for different majors and ethnicities that are open to all and very fun.
Great for these types of students Any student ready to study hard, be active, and make amazing lifelong friends!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Vespers is a tradition of course and a lovely one at that.
Bang for the buck I think that all the money I put into my tuition goes to good use. However, I believe that Southern should try and provide more scholarships in the years following your first.
What to do for fun Intramurals, down town Chattanooga, dorm fun, etc.
Food and Dining I found that Southern offered many different areas to eat.
Dorm Life I liked everything about my dorm life experience except the deans and their overwhelming control. We are adults and should be treated as such.
Academic Rigor I believe that Southern has a very capable staff of teachers, however, I wish that more of the teachers took a genuine interest in the well being and academic standing of all their students.
Tips for prospective students Playing intramurals is a great way to meet new people which is something everyone should strive to do. Also do NOT skip class for it is the biggest way to lower your grade.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Southern is great for any one who loves God and who intends on sharing that love with his/her fellow friends and classmates.
Tips for prospective students At Southern you will find anything you are looking for. As long as you know what you want and aim to meet your goal, Southern will be the perfect place for you =).
Bang for the buck There are many Adventist colleges/universities in the US. And if you compare them, you will find that almost everyone of them is far more expensive than Southern is for the same amount of academics. SAU is definitely worth it to me.
Am enjoying being here Southern is a BEAUTIFUL place. The campus is amazing and the people are great and always smiling. The only down side to being at Southern is that it is very far away from home, however, it is a second home to me and i love it.
Am learning a lot At Southern i not only learned and continued to learn a lot about God and myself, but i also learned a lot academically. The teachers and professors new an immense amount of information on the topics they taught making my learning experience even greater. I learned very valuable information that i can use throughout my life.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students -Hard-workers -Those interested in going in the medical field (It has a great nursing program)
Tips for prospective students -Pack light if you're going to live in the dorm. Sharing space with another person in a small room is a lot harder than you think. -Interview teachers if you go to visit the campus before becoming a student. Meet the instructors in your department, say hello and introduce yourself. -Be sure you're willing to work hard if you want to go here. The classes aren't impossible, but they're tough if you miss reading assignments or skip class.
Bang for the buck I'm not sure if I know what this means, but I assume it can be translated as is it worth spending money to go to this institution? The answer to this can only be answered by the individual. I put 5 stars because I think it was worth it for me personally. No other college I looked at offered a Christian environment and a good, solid music program for flute (Which were basically my only two requirements when searching for a college). Southern is very expensive, but then again it is a private college for a specific group of people. I felt it was worth the money to get my education there.
Am enjoying being here Everyone is so friendly, the campus is absolutely beautiful, and the school provides everything a student needs -- a gym, library, and market are all within easy walking distance. Trails through the woods, which border part of the campus, make excellent running trails, and campus security is never far away, so I feel safe. The college even provides various activities and concerts during weekends for the students to enjoy.
Am learning a lot It could just be because I am a home school student and have never been in a classroom setting, but I am surrounded by so much knowledge and am learning so much sometimes I feel overwhelmed. The teachers (At least in the classes I have been in so far) are very knowledgeable in their area and present the material in a way that everyone understands. That's not to say the classes are easy, in fact it's the very opposite! But they're not impossible if good notes are taken, the material given is read, and one listens carefully. In summery, I am learning a lot.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students For prospective students, I advise that you pray about wherever you go to school. I also advise that you surround yourself with people that are going to support you and encourage you to do your best because college no matter where you go has its distractions.
Bang for the buck I feel that if you are looking for an Adventist education then this is the place for you. Southern is very expensive, but I think that it is worth the money, because of the benefits of being in a Christian environment and education that you find here.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being at Southern. At the beginning it was really hard getting used to being away from my parents and many of my best friends, but I have met so many amazing people. I really like that Southern is a very diverse University, that was one of the things that attracted me to this campus. I also like that the professors and staff at Southern are nice.
Am learning a lot I feel that Southern really challenges you to think critically. The work load isn't a lot depending on your major and the professor that you have, but a common thing among all the professors is that they want to challenge you to not memorize what's there but think critically about the information.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Anything medical: nursing, biology, and pre-med.
Tips for prospective students Beware the freshmen 15! This may very well be the biggest challenge of the year apart from the transition from high school to college!
Bang for the buck Unless the major is big at Southern, like engineering for example, you're not really getting the bang for the buck. However, for nursing students and a few other then yes, it's definitely worth it.
Am enjoying being here There are many activities to do on campus when one isn't studying or working like: rock climbing, working out, swimming, ping pong, billiards, etc. not to mention the nearby parks a walking distance from the campus.
Am learning a lot The teachers, or at least most, make an efforts to help the students learn i.e, handing out a personal schedule of when the teacher is open to discuss, encouraging students to get tutoring from others, etc.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus Safety is of utmost importance here. Especially because this is an Adventist University in an Adventist community. Very few incidents actually occur on campus but Campus Safety is quick to respond to the things that do happen..
Clubs and Activities There is a vast amount of clubs on campus as well as worship/bible studies groups on campus. Each club and small group is geared toward a specific interest or topic. If you can't find something that suits you, creating an organization is always an option.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We actually have a cave on campus that is open once a month. Going in there with a couple friends is the experience of a life time. You will wake up the next morning sore in places you didn't know were used the day before.
Bang for the buck Paying for education can be a bit challenging with a $25,000 tuition. The school does do its best in trying to provide as many students as possible with on-campus jobs. Department scholarships can be pretty scarce. All-in-all it is important to plan how you are going to pay for the following years.

Categories Comments Campus Safety One of the safest places one can be, just watch out where you park or you'll get a ticket!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Many required worship services.
Bang for the buck Very very expensive, but a must have for those Adventists seeking moral and upright spouses that will be agreeable in childrearing.
What to do for fun Join clubs, be involved in music and intramurals, become more physically fit, and focus on the beautiful peers and educational opportunity surrounding you.
Food and Dining Great options for both vegan and vegetarian diet, with many outdoor areas for dining
Dorm Life Lots of housing options from various apartments for upper level students, to various options of dormatory living. You've got to keep your GPA up to keep your curfew reasonable.
Academic Rigor Quite demanding, consider starting at only 12-13 hours so allow for participation in campus activities, clubs, intramurals, and personal hobbies.
Tips for prospective students Watch the meal plan budget early on to avoid starving later on. Be ready to submit to principles of healthy living, from curfews, to alcohol and tobacco free campus living. Don't enroll in too many hours early on - keep your GPA high to keep those funds coming in all your years there.
In three sentences Offers lots of opportunities for spiritual, academic, and physical growth. Beautiful campus, and many nature-oriented recreational activities. Vast array of associate, baccalaureate, and master degrees offered here.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a huge Christmas tree on center campus that is lit by Santa Claus on the ladder of a fire truck, who then throws out candy to the surrounding people. Also, Southern's anti-drug gymnastics team, Gym-Masters, puts on a great show every year.
What to do for fun Downtown Chattanooga is absolutely gorgeous and always has something going on. As for on campus, the wellness center is open a lot and has a pool, track, basketball courts, racquetball courts, an awesome workout floor, a gymnastics center, and a rock climbing wall. There are also fun events with transportation provided, like bowling, roller skating, and miniature golf. There are also great outdoor activities and trips like rock climbing, kayaking, horse back riding, and camping.
Food and Dining There are multiple places to eat on campus, and you can always find something that sounds good, unless you are as picky as my roommate. The cafeteria always has a main course with vegan options, a salad bar, sandwich bar, kimche and rice, soup, fruit, cereal, and ice cream machine. In addition to the cafeteria, there is a fast food styled restaurant, a grocery store with a deli, and a quaint sandwich shop.
Dorm Life The dorms are nicely kept and when you know how to set up your room, its pretty spacious. They are set up it suites so there are only 4 girls per bathroom and there is a sink in your room. The RA's are great as long as you are fairly quiet past midnight and there are lots of fun activities just for girls on the weekends.
Academic Rigor It depends on which classes you take, and who you take it from of course. However, Southern is one of the leading Adventist schools for academics. All of my teachers so far have been professional yet personable and the classes are challenging but not overwhelming.
Tips for prospective students 1. Walk on the crosswalk to avoid getting hit by vehicles. 2. Pray! 3. Look at your schedule before you are ten minutes late for class. 4. Have fun!!! 5. Sleep occasionally
In three sentences Southern is incredible! Truly, a wonderful school for meeting new people, engaging in fun activities, and growing as a person. And if you are the type of person that goes to college to actually learn something, it is great for that as well.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Great. They are always willing to help and escort you at night to be safe!
Greek Life No Greek life- but dorm life is fun!
Clubs and Activities There are all sorts of clubs and Student Senate and Student Association are always planning off-the-beat events and fun things for the students!
Great for these types of students For those who want a spiritual connection and want to be around positive youth that share their values, as well as having fun and getting a great education! It will definitely be easier if you like to get involved and make friends.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every year they put up a huge Christmas tree! And people like to go inside it. They light it up at the Christmas program in the beginning of December and it is simply beautiful!
Bang for the buck Private education is pricey. But once you take a look at the campus you will fall in love and see that it's well worth it. You are definitely getting the education you paid for, as well as the college experience in general.
What to do for fun Chattanooga is such a great place to be! The campus is located just about 20 minutes from downtown and there are always a lot of cultural events going on, sights to see, and beautiful mountains!
Food and Dining There are so many options on campus! The cafeteria rotates its menus fairly frequently, and there is a diner, sandwich shop, and smoothie shop on campus! Along with vending machines and a Whole Foods- like market.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty nice. The RA's are there to help and there are a lot of great people there. The rules can be a pain. But if you follow them your dorm experience will be a breeze.
Academic Rigor It greatly depends on your intended field of study. I feel that in general, academic rigor is pretty high, especially if you're in a science-related field. But the professors are always there to help and it's so worth it! A quality learning experience.
Tips for prospective students Join clubs! Attend SA events and you will make lots of new friends. Take advantage of your Southern Connections class to learn more about how to be involved. Go to class!
In three sentences Southern has a very dedicated team of professors. Campus life is great and full of fun activities. Nursing program is top-notch.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is mediocre at best. They love writing parking tickets and charging students for stupid things, but they fail at responding to any kind of situation.
Greek Life I do not believe there is one on campus?
Clubs and Activities Lots and lots (did I say a lot?) of activities! From sporting events, to music events. There are however, not a whole lot of clubs to my knowledge. The activities outweighs this by a large margin, and hence the 5/5.
Great for these types of students Students who have a chosen degree path with the drive and mental strength to stay focused.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are lots for students to discover, but they can only find them by attending!
Bang for the buck Yes it's pricey, but the education and experiences you gain from it will be worth a lifetime.
What to do for fun There are many things to do for fun both on and off campus! There is always a sporting league of some sort to participate in on campus: softball, football, soccer, basketball, floor hockey, futsal, and volleyball. There are also sporting events and classes: Dodgeball weekend events, tennis courts and tournaments, track & field events, marathons (biking and running), bad-mitten, and more. They have seasonal events, talent shows, cultural festivals, religious events, and seasonal festivals often as well. For those interested in music, there are lots of student music recitals and performances. There is also a great deal of guest musician performances as well. And then there is Chattanooga 10 minutes away with even more things to do during down time!
Food and Dining There are plenty of places to eat on campus. The cafeteria is decent, but they have three other food stops in addition to it: the healthy snack/smoothie store inside of the gym, KR's on the promenade, and the Campus Kitchen (CK's) at the village plaza. Local food shops also give students a price break on their food.
Dorm Life The dorms are hit or miss. Sometimes you get a good room, a good room-mate, a good hall, and a good RA, but other times you do not. The community showers aren't all that great (some of the showers are nice, and others are not), but the newer men's wing is nice. Female's apparently have it easy for dorm room quality.
Academic Rigor Fantastic teachers, and challenging course work. Expect to be pushed in every class you take, and, yes, even the 'Physical Education' courses will be tricky and time consuming at times.
Tips for prospective students -Apply early -Speak with a financial adviser as soon as you get one -Register the minute you are eligible to -Intramurals are a fantastic way to spend extra time (sports are fun, and there is always something to do!)
In three sentences Awesome experiences, great education, beautiful area, but fairly expensive! Do not let the price tag get you down, and check out the school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Three people were hit by cars during Fall 2012 semester.
Greek Life None, and thank God!
Clubs and Activities They do NOT have Amnesty International. I repeat, they do NOT have Amnesty International.
Great for these types of students Rich Adventists.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Christmas on the Promenade.
Bang for the buck Never.
What to do for fun If you or your friends do not have a car, you're toasted.
Food and Dining I'm not a vegetarian, but here, the food is great. There are three extra restaurants that accept your meal plan, and a supermarket which certain things can be purchased on the meal plan as well.
Dorm Life If curfew is a problem to you, do not apply.
Academic Rigor I've heard the nursing program is a pain, but as an undecided student, I cannot answer this question honestly.
Tips for prospective students If money is an issue, do not even think of coming here.
In three sentences The campus at Southern is beautiful, and you feel extremely safe. Moreover, the professors are amazing people that are always willing to help. However, the financial aid offices are unorganized, and struggle to give students the correct information of their monthly plan.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Extremely committed staff.
Clubs and Activities Southern Adventist University is a wonderful place to become involved in a very wide variety of clubs and activities!!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Southern is a great place to start rock climbing.
Food and Dining The campus food is a bit pricy but it is good quality. The campus is within twenty to thirty minutes of Chattanooga, which offers a wide variety of dining options. Food within five minutes of camp includes Taco Bell, Subway, McDonald's, and Walmart, to name just a few.
Dorm Life The dorms not co-ed. They are well furnished, with an ID card key system and regular night checks. The laundry facilities are included with the dorm fee, so you can use them as much as you want to for free.
Academic Rigor The teachers are skilled professionals, so plan to put some actual energy into learning. If you want to sit around and do nothing to receive a degree, look somewhere else. But if you want to be challenged and work to be the best you can be, Southern is for you.
Tips for prospective students The saying, You will get out of any experience what you put into it, applies as much to Southern as to any other university. Southern by itself won't take you to the top. But if you desire to put your everything into it, SAU provides one of the most beautiful atmospheres through which to achieve your dreams.
In three sentences Southern Adventist University is a place where almost anyone can come to obtain a quality education. Southern offers students a wide range of social, mental, physical, and spiritual opportunities. Lives are changed at Southern.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities Southern is well known for being an international campus. There are many different ethnics clubs as well as interest clubs on campus. Once you're in theses clubs, its hard to ever leave. We also have life groups here.
Bang for the buck Southern is very very expensive. I mean you're paying for a quality environment and education but, I really wish that it was a lot more affordable. There are lots of job opportunities to help pay things off though.
What to do for fun Southern is dedicated to keeping their students outdoors. Everything you could possibly think of to do outdoors its there. There are television here but you have to kind of go out of your way to get to them. Downtown Chattanooga is a fun place to go and hang out.
Tips for prospective students Its best that you try and figure out what you want to do right now even though you do have time. I strongly recommend doing AP courses before you go to college.
In three sentences You will find what you are looking for here no matter what it is. Southern challenges you to think for yourself whilst simultaneously introducing Jesus like you've never seen before. This is an amazing school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety No major drug busts or criminal activities that I have experienced. You can feel safe walking around campus. I do know that the local police spend an unsavory amount of time on minor traffic violations. If you drive, drive UNDER the speed limit.
Clubs and Activities I'm not in any clubs. The activities held by the student association are scarcely attended. I went to one event, and the only people there were freshmen hanging out in cliques.
Bang for the buck I think all colleges are charging excessive amounts. This one is no exception. I know some students get ridiculous grants and hardly have to pay anything, whereas other students have to work three jobs and take huge loans, like me. It's not really fair.
Food and Dining We are given a meal plan of about one-thousand dollars per semester. Many students spend this money up before the end of the semester and have to buy food with credit/debit cards. Also, all the food on campus is vegetarian.
Dorm Life Rather strict separate boys and girls dorms. Curfew changes from freshman to senior. The rooms are small, but the girl's dorm has one shower for every four girls.
Academic Rigor Depending upon the workload you decide, your schedule and study times vary.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is very safe and there is campus safety constantly working to make sure you are protected.
Clubs and Activities There are multiple organizations around campus, and for the intramural's, there is a group for everyone from beginner to pro.
Great for these types of students Students who love the outdoors and food. Also great in academics for students who want to get experience for their careers.
Bang for the buck Southern is one of the cheaper Adventist schools. Their scholarships are not always as large, but for how much cheaper the school is than others, it is a good deal.
What to do for fun Southern has a state of the art wellness center that has a rock-wall. It is also in a great location to do things in the community and there are intramural s on campus for those who enjoy sports.
Food and Dining There are multiple places to eat on campus and the food is amazing. You will not go hungry because there is something fro everyone.
Dorm Life The girls dorms are a little strict, but you can sense that it is a spiritual place. The dorms are also some of the best I've seen so far and their wall units make available space greater. The suites are nice too so you don't have to use a community bathroom.
Academic Rigor Southern is committed to making sure each student succeeds and they have good programs that I have seen. They are one of the top Adventist schools for journalism right now.
Tips for prospective students Go for a campus visit, especially during college days because it will really help your decision.
In three sentences Southern is a great place because it has great academics. The school is undergoing renovations to make sure that the student's needs are met and just to make the campus as nice as possible. The dorms are also very nice.
