Great for these types of students

Those people who wish to become educators, nurses, and any major for that matter should become active as early as possible attending club meeting and taking courses in their field, therefore they will be able to apply to those programs and be accepted early

    Tips for prospective students

Students should take advantage of all that Southern has to offer such as different courses, sports, clubs, job opportunities on campus, and the helpful staff. In addition, students should get involved as early as possible and find an advisor that will help them navigate throughout their years at Southern

    Bang for the buck

In comparison to other colleges, students will recieve a wonderful education for a decent price. Southern offers several classes and programs for just about everyone

    Am enjoying being here

I love attending Southern. The campus is beautiful, the classes and staff are interesting, and the students who attend Southern enjoy being there and have a desire to learn.

    Am learning a lot

Southern Connecticut State University offers a vast amount of courses dealing with culture, liberal arts and offers several majors and masters programs. For example the study abroad program is an amazing opportunity that students can experience.

Great for these types of students

Students from small towns looking for a change!

    Tips for prospective students

When choosing schools make sure it has everything that you're looking for. Southern offers almost every major possible. There's nothing here at Southern I don't enjoy.

    Bang for the buck

Out of the four state schools, I'd have to say in my opinion Southern has the most to offer. The campus is the nicest and the activites are so often that you always see your money at use.

    Am enjoying being here

I live on campus and love it so much! Southern is a perfect match for me and I could never imagine going anywhere else.

    Am learning a lot

I've learned more in a year and a half here at Southern than I did all throughout high school. If you choose the right professors learning is fun as well!

Great for these types of students

Most students can find this school beneficial because they have many programs and majors. Also, they have many sports and clubs which are available to most students.

    Tips for prospective students

If you have interest in this school, make sure you come to a campus open house so you can check out everything to really get a feel. Also, if you are looking for a good education and not as much worried with the social aspects than this is the best school for your money. Check out the college's website for their sports and clubs and see which one you would enjoy as this is the best way to guarantee a strong social relationship with other students living on campus.

    Bang for the buck

If you live in Connecticut, Southern is one of the best schools for the money. Out of state students do pay quite a bit more so I am sure there are better options from a out-of-state student if they are looking for a cheap state school.

    Am enjoying being here

The school has a nice, up-to-date campus that is aesthetically pleasing. Also, the dorms are not very far from the center of campus. One thing that Southern lacks is a large population of students on the weekends. For the most part, students go home on the weekends or just commute to school. Southern has tried to stop this by disallowing freshman students parking passes so they have no choice to stay which is good for most freshman.

    Am learning a lot

There are a wide variety of classes to take with a large spectrum of subjects. Also, the faculty is very helpful and for the most part truly cares about his or her students education.

Great for these types of students

-positive people -willing to learn -willing to have fun

    Bang for the buck

The price will be good if you have in in-state tuition. That will be no problem. However, the out of state tuition is very pricey.

    Will enjoy being here

This is probably the college that you will have the most fun at. The environment is okay, but there are so many things that you could do. Football, hokey, and basketball are one of the many sports offered on campus. It is sometimes noisy though.

    Will learn a lot

The professors are good. You could probably enjoy being with them.

Great for these types of students

It is great for students wanting to get a degree and still live life.

    Tips for prospective students

Future students I encourage you to visit schools and then try to choose the right school. Southern is a good school and good for commuters.

    Bang for the buck

The cost is pretty low for a college. Scholarships would be helpful paying as well. It is even more inexpensive when living off campus as I am.

    Am enjoying being here

I think that it is a well respected school and I think that is a good school. I enjoy some of it but it was not my first choice school. It is a good second choice though.

    Am learning a lot

Southern is a school that offers lots of help as needed for any student. Many teachers are available through email and some offer extra help sessions that are very helpful. Learning can be done on your own but it is very helpful to have staff available if need be.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Southern has a unique and warming library dedicated to Chemistry majors and its comforting to know students before you and students after you have and will spend as many hours in that library stressing over your classes like you are. Most of the Chemistry majors have made this room their second home and everyone comes together in this room to help anyone when needed.

    Academic Rigor

Southern challenges its students academic as well as set goals/expectations for all students to meet and maintain. Though challenging, the professors at Southern are always there to help and guide students when needed.

    Campus Safety

There are plenty of on duty police officers walking around campus to make sure students are safe during the day and night.

    Greek Life

Greek life seems very heavy on campus, i actually turned down and chance to join one of these groups because it takes a'lot of dedication and I am too focused on my studies; how ever these associations always have new events going on!

    Clubs and Activities

As stated before I am apart of the Biology club and that is going great for me, but there are plenty of clubs to join on campus and if your have a club idea to create, you can do that also!

Great for these types of students

Southern has almost about everything any student of difference can benefit from, you just have to search for them! Southern is all about diversity.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

so far I have'nt seen any unusual traditions of locations on campus, maybe I will this fall!

    Bang for the buck

The bang for your buck would be, the experienced professors. Not only are they teaching their subjects but they are actually in the fields and can be great networking access for your future careers!

    What to do for fun

Southern has alot of great activities for their hardworking students. I have experienced student appreciation day which included carvival type activities and free food and ice cream, plus there are student trips available. Joining a club is always good, I am currently in my biology club and loving all the fun meetings and activities we have during the academic school year.

    Food and Dining

The food is awesome, Southern has lots of great meals providing their students. Even outside food restaurants such as Dunken Donuts! my personal favorite.

    Dorm Life

I currently don't live on campus but I have friends that do, and so far they have nothing but positive things to say about their life away from home experience. I say take a shot at it, as long as you stay focused and don't fall into partying everyday you'll be fine!

    Academic Rigor

    Biology

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you are focused and always in class on time. Handle your business with financial aid and scholarships. Make sure you are visiting your academic adviser daily.

    Campus Safety

There are a lot of blue lights around campus and you can call campus police to come escort you back to your building if you don't feel safe. The campus is also very well lit.

    Bang for the buck

I think that this school is worth my money especially with me being an out of state student. The food is delicious, there are always activities to do and the rooms are spacious. The academic buildings are also newly renovated and they are re-building the library right now to make it bigger.

    What to do for fun

There is always something organized on campus to do. They organize trips and have game nights in the community rooms. Also you can go to downtown New Haven and explore all the shops. You can always find something to do.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall always has different food everyday. There is also a salad bar, a pizza bar, and a stir fry section. There is also a selection of desserts. If you go in the student center there is a Nathans, a pizza place, a sub shop and a Spanish place.

    Dorm Life

The dorms I live in are very spacious. The one down fall is that you have to share with 3 other people and all the beds are in one room. There are always events going on in the community room to get to know the students in the building.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the classes can be challenging but you just have to put your best effort forward. Most professors are willing to help you during their office hours.

    Tips for prospective students

The campus is big so if you have class on opposite sides of campus a bike would be a good option. Don;t worry if you're shy because there are always things to do to get to know people and the CA's are really nice.

    In three sentences

The campus is very big and is newly renovated. There is always something to do on campus. You never feel left out with the e-mails from the school.

Southern is a great school for sociable and hardworking students. There are a wide variety of clubs and organizations for students to join. The classes are challenging and require outside work, but it is worth it in the end.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you go to class on time and try to participate in class discussions. Professors really appreciate when students answer questions and voice opinions. It shows that you are actually reading the material and paying attention in class.

    Am enjoying being here

The people are very friendly and the campus is beautiful. Although it is a large enough school where you do not know all the students the ones you do interact with are great people.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers and staff are very helpful and friendly. Most classrooms are small enough where there is the option to interact one on one with the professor. The professors offer office hours for students who have questions or need extra help. The fellow students are also helpful, many are willing to get together for group study sessions before large exams.

There is the Jail-n-Bail in the spring that raises money for the Special Olympics, Relay for Life, and free movie nights in the student center.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are a great learning experience. You learn to live on your own and prioritize your time.

    Academic Rigor

The course load is intense, especially as a nursing major. However, because it is rigorous, you feel a huge sense of satisfaction and accomplishment at the end of the day.

    What to do for fun

There are soooo many activites on campus everyday! Southern has at least 100 clubs and if you can't find one that fits you, you can always start your own for something you're interested in. Southern has a Pro-con committee that specializes in making activities for Southern's students.

    Food and Dining

There are tons of areas around campus to eat, not only is there Conn Hall (main student dining area), but the Adanti Student Center has several restaurants, there's the bagel wagon in Engleman, and several other small food shops around campus. Southern students also get discounts at some of the nearby restaurants with their hootloot card.

    Dorm Life

I am a commuter so I don't live in the dorms but I hear it's not that bad.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes can be challenging but as long as you read, keep up with the topics you're discussing in class you should be fine! And if you still need a little help you can always come to your professors office hours, or to the free tutoring center!

    Tips for prospective students

I would advise talking to your professors, even though the classes are small you still may have questions about the material. Southern's faculty are required to have office hours at least three days a week, so someone will always be on campus to answer a question you might have or just to chat. There is also a free tutoring and writing center! You should definitely check it out!!

    In three sentences

Southern is a great school. They have amazing teaching and nursing program! The students that go there are friendly and there are tons of clubs to join. Also, the professors and faculty at Southern are always around willing to help with any problem you might have.

    What to do for fun

Southern is located a few minutes away from downtown New Haven s there is lots to do from restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping etc

I would say it is pretty standard but they do offer different options on different parts of campus at any given time.

    Campus Safety

The campus is in the middle of New Haven a bustling city with lots of life. Unfortunately that life comes with a lot of not so good people as well. The campus, while set in the safer part of town, is spread out and has experienced some sexual assault and robbery in the area while I have been there (2 years). They do however have emergency phones for your use just in case you do witness or experience an event.

    Greek Life

The campus has lots of Greek life. No hazing that I know of goes on. The only downside is that the Greek life never seems to publicize themselves enough so no one knows where their house is, when they are accepting applications or when events are going on.

    Clubs and Activities

I give this two stars because while this college has a plethora of campus activities there are no campus club fairs to allow new students to join or find out about then more. If you want to join you must contact the coordinator through email (if you can find it) or hope you find a flyer publicizing an event by a particular group. After that, I wish the best of luck to all to be in a group or club activity. For me, in the midst of all the work I have to do already, I'd rather try to finish my work than pursue a club that cleary doesn't want me in their group.

Great for these types of students

Students who live in Connecticut and want an inexpensive but good education. Also, the education program is excellent here.

    Bang for the buck

If you live in Connecticut and wish to commute, the price is pretty good. It is normally around 4000 to 5000 dollars. I wouldn't suggest staying on campus. Most students leave campus on the weekend anyway and so you are paying for a social life that doesn't exist if you choose to live on campus. For those from out of state, the price is ridiculous for the education and opportunities they give. I would definetly not go to Southern if you are from out of state.

    What to do for fun

Southern is placed in New Haven. It has plenty of entertainment between concerts, shopping, bars, clubs, etc. Plus, right up the road is Yale University. Often students for both colleges meet at the same places so you will get to experience some new faces when you are out and about on the town.

    Food and Dining

Food seems okay. Most students in between classes frequent the bagel wagon in Engleman Hall. This is a nice lounge area where you can catch up with friends. If not near Engleman, there are plenty of vending machines around campus if you are diabetic or just need a pick me up before class. The food in the main halls seem to be good as well.

    Dorm Life

Do not spend time in a dorm. The dorms themselves seem clean and put together. However, all the students return to their homes on the weekends so dorm life after classes and on weekends are dead. Literally there is no dormlife to speak of.

    Academic Rigor

This is an in-state, low budget school so not much academic rigor is required. But this doesn't mean that the professors do not expect do to do your best and take control of your own learning.

On saint pattys day its great because their is always the new haven day parade and it is crazy.

    What to do for fun

For fun where can i start, in new haven its all about the club scene so that is a possibility wednesday- saturday. then their will be parties and other things to do. then their is fraternities and other groups you can join for fun.I

    Food and Dining

Connecticut hall is where you will be doing most of your eating. In my opinion they always have great options and their is healthy options which is nice. Then in the student center their is about 5 more places to eat which are normally very good.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are very fun and they usually hire cool people as RA's and DA's. the only thing is it is a dry campus.

    Academic Rigor

You are constantly being challenged which is nice. without motivation and teachers pushing you, you will get no where

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure they have your major! Also SCSU has a liberal arts program so if you are trying to jump into your major from day one this is not the school for you. The liberal arts program has helped me become more well rounded though.

    In three sentences

It is a great school in my opinion. The classes are small so you actually are getting one-on-one time with the teacher. Most teachers are very helpful from experience.

    Campus Safety

I have never had a problem with safety, but at night it is best to not sneak off somewhere with someone you do not personally know--there has been a sexual assault supposedly not far from the main campus.

    Greek Life

The Greek Life is there for students that are motivated and wish to give back to the community--the sororities often host blood drives, for example.

    Clubs and Activities

There are quite a few major-specific/major-related clubs on campus, which is fun for students in those fields of study, as well as important for students who are undecided and want to know a little more about a specific major.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to save money should check the school out. Also, our Education and Social Work programs are well-known, widely respected, and have helped many people get employed. (The Nursing program is as well, but that's provided that one is accepted into the major, a huge source of stress for many undergrads.)

    Bang for the buck

Southern, being a state school, is fairly inexpensive if that is what you need. However, I can't say that it is a top-notch institution. It's fine if you wish to get your Bachelor's with little student loan debt, but if you want a quality master's/doctoral degree, look for a school with a wider range of programs and prestige.

    What to do for fun

To be honest, Southern is rather dead on the weekends. Most people party at neighboring schools or nightclubs, for campus is rather boring for those that want to let loose every so often.

    Food and Dining

Personally, I'm a vegetarian who's a bit health-obsessed, and I can still find nutritious, non-meat things to eat. There's something for everybody, really.

    Dorm Life

I have found the hall directors, CC's (or RA's) and all the dorm staff to be pretty friendly. Note, though, that some dorms have A/C and others do not.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the lower-level classes are embarrassingly, boringly simple. They're good for a GPA boost before you start taking harder higher-level courses, but they leave much to be desired intellectually. It's a bit of a shame, too, for the professors here are rather intelligent, and are a little dismayed by student apathy that they are unfortunately forced to cater to.

    Tips for prospective students

See professors in their office hours. They are willing to help, and will do a lot for a student that shows drive and respect for the course. Talk to your advisor if you have any questions about your coursework, course load, or switching your major. They are a great resource for new students. Get involved on campus; it'll look great on a resume one day!

    In three sentences

The professors here are amazing people. Southern is affordable, and do not be afraid to settle for it. However, do not be shy to consider going to a different school if you have been accepted to a school that offers a higher quality education or has a more inclusive array of programs of study.

    What to do for fun

Southern has a least one type of event or activity going on every night so there will never be a bored moment. There are always speeches by authors, comedians, Bill Cosby drops by every now and then, parties, and some students enjoy going to clubs every now and then. There is never a dull moment on campus!

    Food and Dining

In the Student Center there are plenty of restaurants to eat at! There's 2 mato, Nathan's, Blue agave, Dunkin' Donuts, Mondo Sub, and the bagel wagon in Engleman. I believe you also get a discount with your hootloot card if you go to some restaurants in downtown New Haven.

    Dorm Life

I was a commuter my first year and I plan to next year but i haven't heard any major complaints. Although there was a dorm that was just renovated! :)

    Academic Rigor

Southern's courses can be challenging but the professors are there to help you! Every professor is required to have a certain amount of office hours on campus and you can come by anytime to ask questions get private tutoring or just to talk! There is also a FREE math and English tutoring center on campus!

    Tips for prospective students

There are tons of clubs to join and activities on-campus all the time! On Thursday there's college night in downtown New Haven. And it's a short metro ride from New York!

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

I feel that the campus is very secure. New haven itself you have to be careful in. Never go into downtown by yourself. But on campus you'll be safe. There is always a southern cop or new haven cop patrolling the campus and there are alerts about what goes on on campus.

    Greek Life

Greek life is amazing. I'm personally involved in Greek life on campus and I invite everyone to come see what it's like. We are very involved on campus and in the community. We support other Greeks and other clubs in their events. It's very fun and interesting community.

    Clubs and Activities

We have clubs and organizations for every different type of person. We have sororities and fraternities, karate club, honor societies, academic clubs, social clubs, intramurals, and more.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students that love volunteering and helping their communities. It's also a great school for students who are afraid to leave home for the first time. Southern is very welcoming and everyone is very friendly and helpful.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Southern has two annual traditions which focus on helping the community outside of southern. In the fall, we have a clean up and in the spring we have the big event, which is a day where all clubs come together and work to help our community.

    Bang for the buck

Southern is a great school that can be affordable. Its great for undergrad because when you look at it all undergrad degrees are basically the same no matter where you go. A b.s. in biology looks the same here as it does at Yale without having to pay loans for the rest of your life.

    What to do for fun

New haven is an amazing city. It's full of life and entertainment. Southern is minutes from downtown and from Dixwell and Whalley aves, both Main strips in new haven and into Hamden. Southern always sends out a calendar of events to students to let them know what's going on during the month.

    Food and Dining

Conn Hall gives you a lot of choices but you have to pick the right ones. If you live in a freshman dorm or a dorm without a kitchen in it you have to have a meal plan. There's also the student center which gives you four different restaurants and a Dunkin Donuts. It's really easy if you're on the go.

    Dorm Life

I didn't meet a lot of people during my first year on campus. People were not very open and friendly in my dorm. I was in a triple and I would not recommend it. It was not very open space to live in but it saves you about $700 if you live in a triple opposed to a double. The bathroom on our floor was always dirty. The girls living on my floor had no respect for themselves or each other. You do have to share a bathroom with about 40 other girls which can be hard to get used to. I'd say that if you live close enough, wait until you can live in North Campus and save your money.

    Academic Rigor

For me, the classes are what you make of them. If you really put in the effort to get good grades and take advantage of the resources that are offered, then you can really succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved on campus and in the community. It's a great way to make friends and have new and great experiences.

    In three sentences

Southern is an interesting school with a lot of opportunities. It is a big community and extremely outgoing and friendly. There are many ways to get involved on campus and for doing community service in the neighborhood outside Southern's campus.

    What to do for fun

There are many activities on campus and they offer activities off campus for example going to medieval times or NYC. There are also bars, clubs, and parties to go to.

    Food and Dining

Conn hall has many options but they tend to put the same things out every day. You tend to get sick of it after a while and then same thing with the student center.

    Dorm Life

Some dorms are great while others aren't. I lived in farnham and meet many people. I was friends with everyone on my floor and with others. I loved my roommate.

    Academic Rigor

Southern is a great school. The nursing program and education programs are very competitive.

    Tips for prospective students

    Great variety of Greek life

    Clubs and Activities

There's a very big variety of clubs and organizations on campus. If there's a club you are looking for and can't find it. you are free to create your own! With the approval of the board of course. Because of such a wide variety there's practically some event going on all the time depending on the weather conditions. There is even a collegiate website you can visit and see all the 100's of clubs and organizations available, not to forget the daily emails to remind students of events going on.

Great for these types of students

Friendly, outgoing, acadamic, greek lovers, athletic.

    Bang for the buck

If you are a people person you'll love it here. If you are not no one will force you to be. Everyone on campus is approachable. If you need help with anything, don't be shy to ask! Everyone there is willing to help. All the staff and professors work to see you succeed. Great school spirit.

    What to do for fun

A lot of activities on campus, lots of clubs and organizations to join. If you want something to do you'll find something. You can even rally up a couple of friends play volleyball or ask them to join you to play an intramural sport. Campus is about a 15mins bus ride downtown. And Downtown New Haven has a lot to offer from restaurants, shopping centers, bars, to clubs. It also has great cultural centers and not far from the beach at all for those hot spring fever moments. Sporting events are an option for those interested as well.

    Food and Dining

I love food, and food at southern is wonderful. If they had bad food I would not be going there. Because I think I have had enough bad cafe food during high school. But like every other campus meal you get tired of it eventually. But being close to so many restaurants is an advantage, you can eat out once in a while for a change when you get bored of school food. Then come back to enjoy it again.

    Dorm Life

Depending on what dorm you apply for or recieve. If you are in the honors program you get an airconditioned dorm.

    Academic Rigor

Wonderful academics, majority of students are focused. Professor are willing to help anyone willing to succeed. They extend their hours to accommodate the needs of students. Great nursing program, communications department is amazing.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking for a friendly but serious place to spend four years southern is for you. Get a campus tour, get a feel for what campus is like. Apply there, you have nothing to lose.

    In three sentences

Southern is a very friendly community of students, staff and faculty. Everyone is very helpful, as the catch phrase of the New Student Orientation program states, You'll never roam alone. Interesting variety of students and faculty.

    Campus Safety

Stay on campus, don't be stupid, you'll be fine. The most common problems come from people walking to local clubs/bars and not thinking. The areas around Southern can be pretty schetchy, so stay on campus or drive to your destination or stick to big groups and stay out of the troubled areas which can be discerned almost immediately.

    Greek Life

Greek life is limited and any Frat/Sorority is limited to on campus activities and off campus charities. They exist, however they are not those of a larger private university.

    Clubs and Activities

I've only been part of two clubs on campus (English, and French) which do not represent the clubs as a whole. I've had a great time with both, but I know there are a great deal more that span a much larger interest range.

Great for these types of students

English, Nursing, Future Teachers, Theater, Business, Physics.

    Bang for the buck

If you are going to pay in state tuition, I doubt very much if there is a better school. They currently lack a pre-law program which was a detriment for me; however, if you are going into nursing/teaching/health there is no better in the area. You'll pay a lot less than UCONN and you'll get an equal if not better education.

    What to do for fun

During the warmer months, there is a great deal of hiking in and around the campus. Nightlife consists of New Haven and Westville which can be fun but should be treated with care as safety can become an issue very quickly. Beyond that, there are a plethora of academic clubs and societies that can fill up anyones schedule and time to their hearts content.

    Food and Dining

This is a college, not a five star or even three star restaurant. As soon as you accept that fact, it gets a lot easier. Connecticut hall always has food that is somewhat tasty and edible; but they lack really nutritious options so you have to be careful if you want to stay in shape. The tendency is to pig out on the junk food available and this is why they have the term freshman 15.

    Dorm Life

As I never lived in the dorms I can't speak to this particular facet. However, from what I've bee told, the freshman dorms, while not wonderful are comfortable. They will give you the college experience, but if that is a good or bad thing depends entirely on the person and the individual situation. Some friends have horror stories, others have lifelong friends.

    Academic Rigor

This is not a bird school by any stretch that you should expect to breeze through. The classes will ask a great deal of you, and the higher level classes even more so. I was a half involved student at my previous school, and SCSU has pushed me to want to succeed, so be prepared to be pushed.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to go through the step by step procedure that the college outlines, but declare early and modify the steps to create your own educational environment. While the school is good at guiding the process a close personal advisor in your selected field is far better. This university is not private, but can give you more than any private university I've experience if you are willing to put as much effort into it. The teachers are top notch; however, as some students see the school as less than others, they treat it with disdain and you will have to get past lackadaisical students in your introductory classes.

    In three sentences

As a transfer student coming into SCSU, I've found the school to be welcoming, and the educational experience has been excellent. At my prior college, the faculty and staff could not be bothered to interact with the students as the sheer volume precluded such interaction; however, at Southern Connecticut, I've made close connections with the faculty and have grown in my talents at an exponential rate. I would recommend the school to any who can stomach the rather less than collegiate surroundings and who do not mind the urban setting.

    In three sentences

Personally SCSU is the best university in Ct because the tuition is low and the location is less than 5 miles from my home. The food from the dinning hall is healthy and delicious. Once you have established your major as well as your position in a club or organization the fun and hard work begins.

    Campus Safety

They try to make you feel safe at orientation but after that always walk with a buddy, some kids got mugged last semester!

Great for these types of students

Great for people who enjoy the city life and large schools. Close to downtown New Haven and Yale.

    Bang for the buck

Not really, most people in the Bursars office and Financial aid office are not very helpful.

    What to do for fun

I'm an active programer for Programs Council. It's the largest club on campus. We put on a ton a great events for Southern Students.

    Food and Dining

The food in the cafe depends on the day to be honest. Some days theres a large selection from stir fry to pizza to deli and others theres only left over bagels. In the student center you can use a meal exchange and get dunkin donuts if all else fails.

    Dorm Life

From what I hear and have seen from my friends it's alright, some dorms are better than others, I would say avoid Neff hall!

    Academic Rigor

How challenging your classes are depends on what year you are. Your freshman year will be a breeze so enjoy it because after that it's time to buckle down. It also depends on your teachers, some like to give a ton of busy work and others only assign what you need to know.

    Tips for prospective students

As a commuter, I'd say get involved on campus! Whether it's clubs, sororities or doing your work study on campus you'll get way more out of your college career if you join something. Also, definitely get to campus at least 30 minutes before your class starts because you will not find parking easily.

    In three sentences

If I had to give Southern a rating out of 10, it would probably get a 5. Most of the teachers are passionate about what they teach but the tuition hikes are awful. The parking situation is also horrendous.

    Food and Dining

The meal plans are pretty good. We have a lot of choices, although eating the same food does get a old after a while. The food is of pretty good quality and you can eat pretty healthily. Off campus there are many excellent and diverse dining options.

    Dorm Life

Dorms can be small and old, but Resident Life Staff are excellent and there's a great community! You're surrounded by a city with a lot to offer. Living on campus is fun and you gain a lot from it.

    Academic Rigor

Classes aren't that difficult, but you will learn something no matter your skill level. Professors are generally very passionate about their subject- although not all are skilled teachers, you will find some gems. All in all, you will leave prepared for your career.

    Tips for prospective students

Check out the campus and see if the atmosphere is compatible to you. You will find that people on campus are very open and friendly- it's very easy to make friends if you reach out. However, some students used to a less diverse or very different culture may prefer a different kind of community. The truth is that, by going to a public (less expensive) university, you're giving up an organized administration, fancy dorms, and excellent advisors- for the most part. At SCSU you have to be on top of your own academic advisement- ask older students for advice, use CollegeProwler and RateMyProfessor, scour the school website for information, etc. The posted time or location for events may change.. many of the University's Administration's actions seem disconnected or out of place- (however if you do talk with one of the Admins face to face, you usually find that they really do care, but are faced with too many tasks for too many students). The dorms are smaller and older than at other universities, but they're clean and you meet great people! If SCSU has a program you're passionate about and you love the community- and you're willing to sacrifice a few things- you will love Southern!

    In three sentences

SCSU has great programs and an active, supportive and diverse community in a busy, beautiful city! The only cons I would name would be poor academic advisement and poor organization, and that the majority of the students are commuters. However, I am a second year residential student and my experience has really been that the good things outweigh the bad.

    Academic Rigor

Go in to Southern with your academic rigor high. I think as a college student I have learned to go into every class with my head high and having very high expectations of myself.
