Great for these types of students

    Adventurous, Outdoors, Party Animals

    Tips for prospective students

Check the place out before you come. It's not for everyone and but has a small-town university town vibe. The Greek life is pretty weak and we only have a few fraternities and sororities.

    Bang for the buck

Paying about the state school average in Illinois.

    Am enjoying being here

Carbondale's scenery and town style is very cool. Unlike most college towns its size. Tons to do in Shawnee Forest located just South of Carbondale.

    Am learning a lot

Adaption to freshman year was easy enough but classes are picking up. Learning tons.

Great for these types of students

this school is great for students looking to attend a college in an almost rural area and but to far from home depending on where you live. Also if you would like to reside in an are that like a suburb or city, the campus offers those potions to students as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips for future SIUC students would be to create a facebook account because facebook is big here. I once was a faithful myspace user but i soon realized that without a facebook account, you WILL be missing out on a lot of events that is taken place around and outside of campus.

    Bang for the buck

Being a siuc student i found myself spending a lot of money on food more than anything else believe it or not lol. The cafeteria food isn't bad it's just that you get tired of the same stuff.

    Am enjoying being here

I love here in Carbondale, although the stores and other place where big events are held are long distances away it's fun here. I do recommend a car, but the campus bus is also a good alternative to. I joined the Best dance team on campus Anarki 3D3 and we have been having a great year. They are like my family.

    Am learning a lot

I am a current student at SIUC this is my second year here. I'm majoring in Engineering and while attending siuc, i have been able to focus in more on my major as well getting to know my limitations and how independent I am. The people i met here are fun and outgoing and are becoming to be my best friends here. The teachers are good but some teachers do need that extra mile, meaning you have to work with them and let them know what you are here for and u don't plan on wasting any time.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to take a course that interests you just because it's not in your major. There are many interesting courses - ranging from bowling to wine tasting. It's okay to take a course for fun! Get involved! You'll have an easier time transitioning if you join a group and start meeting people. We have over 200 different groups on campus so there's bound to be one you're interested in! Thompson Point (dorms) is the place to live if you like a somewhat rural environment. Most importantly - GO TO CLASS! This is the easiest way to keep your grades up. Don't worry - you will still have plenty of free time.

    Bang for the buck

There are many scholarship opportunities available through the school, you just have to look for them. The University also treats top scholars very well! Tuition is comparable to other state schools. Although you can find cheaper housing off campus, living in the dorms isn't that that bad - especially for the first couple years. However, I felt that the dining halls meal plans were a bit expensive, especially since I never used all of my meals.

    Am enjoying being here

I love SIUC - it has so much to offer. You can always find something to do even if you are a scholar or love the social life. Don't be afraid to explore the area outside of campus. If you enjoy nature - check out Giant City or the Little Grand Canyon. However, if you are used to city life, you may find Carbondale is lacking in some things that only a city can offer.

    Am learning a lot

Some of the general courses may feel like a breeze, but there are many interesting courses to choose from. I found I started to learn the most when taking classes that pertained to my major. Sure upper level courses are challenging, but they are well worth it.

Great for these types of students

Honestly, I think SIUC is great for any type of student. Anyone can find something to join where they will meet other people just like them. Whatever your interest is (skydiving, music, or geology), there is a group or club for you to join. It may be known as a party school, but any school is a party school. Your college experience is whatever one makes it.

    Tips for prospective students

Get out and join something! Staying in the dorm room is not fun at all. There are over 400 RSO's on campus, so there is something for everyone. I joined Marching Salukis this year, and it was a BLAST! I had never marched before, but the group was a lot of fun to be with. It's nice to have a little family together before classes even start. This would be the same way with any group, however. You will know people on campus and that group will give you resources for anything one could possibly need.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is average for the state of Illinois, and SIUC offers a lot of majors that other colleges in Illinois do not. For example, I am in the Radiology program, which is the only four year program in the state of Illinois. Of course there are programs at community colleges, but this program allows people to specialize in certain areas, such as sonograms, MRI's, and radiation therapy. Like I said, the teaching is fantastic, so you are not wasting your time on crappy teaching. One thing that is annoying is the meal plan. A student living on campus has to choose either 12, 15, or 19 meals per week. A student cannot swipe in someone else unless if that other person also has a SIUC ID, which is annoying when guests from back home or other universities are in Carbondale to visit. For a visitor to eat in the dining halls, they have to pay around $7 to eat, which is not worth it for the overall quality of the food served.

    Am enjoying being here

To be honest, I absolutely hate coming home for breaks. SIUC is a great place to be. There are a lot of fun places to go both close to campus and a little bit of a drive from campus. Of course, there are bars in Carbondale if you are interested, but there are other great things to do besides those. There are great restaurants close to campus, such as Fat Patties and Quatros, to go to to get away from dorm food. These places aren't too pricey and both do deliver. There is also Giant City Park and the Shawnee National Forest, which both have great hiking trails and places to camp.

    Am learning a lot

All of my teachers at SIUC overall have been fantastic. I especially recommend Dr. Hahn for Philosophy 104 and Dr. Martin for Sociology 108. Dr. Hahn is a wonderful teacher and does a good job keeping lectures very interesting. He does not put up with cell phone use, which is great because cell phones constantly going off during lectures are very annoying. Dr. Martin's class is also very entertaining, but his tests are difficult. He makes sure people know the material by having you apply what you learn in lectures and discussion sections. Overall, the teaching at SIUC is great and really do care about the grades you are earning.

Great for these types of students

Southern treats their top students very, very well. Whereas at some institutions, a good student may be lost in the crowd, at Southern that same student has individual opportunities to excel through the honors program, and even to perform research as a first-year undergrad! Of course, there are many opportunities for excellence for any hard-working average student as well.

    Tips for prospective students

Southern has an undeniable, and somewhat undeserved reputation for being a party school. However, if you are a focuses student like myself, you'll find that there are plenty of fun things to do outside of the party scene. There are often so abundant activities on campus over one weekend that it becomes a matter of deciding between several good opportunities. The real difference between experiences is in making friends- if you get involved in something, you will make friends, and be much happier.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive no matter where one attends, however, Southern's determination to keep costs down, and the avaliability of many merit-based scholarships has been very helpful in paying for the education. The campus has much to offer, rendering the fees well worth the price, and tuition is relatively low, compared to many other universities. The one gripe I have is the cost of the meal plan required for living in the dorms. One might think that for nearly $8.00 per meal, they might serve more gourmet cuisine.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus and surrounding area is absolutely beautiful, and fairly clean. I was able to make great friends almost immediately through my involvement in the Marching Salukis, and the fun times we've already shared have been amazing. I have a sense of belonging and feel fortunate to be attending.

    Am learning a lot

As a freshmen having just completed my first semester, there have been few classes that have given me a challenge as intro classes are fairly simple, however, those few more advanced courses have taught me much and the small class sizes really facilitated actual learning.

I would say that the majority of students come from Chicago, because SIUC is the farthest you can get away from home without going out of state (about five and a half to six hours away from Chicago). For me, the school is perfect in size, which is around 20,000 students. It doesn't seem overwhelming to me at all, and also doesn't seem deserted or empty. There are always students walking around, and besides meeting people in your major, it's pretty easy to meet people and make friends. The Communications building is full of artsy majors, and SIUC is an awesome school for film and other majors relating to that. It also has a good engineering school, which isn't as competitive and stressful as U of I, but still good. If you're not sure whether you'll like SIUC, come down and check out the campus!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't buy your text books at the student center, or any kind of laptops/computer stuff for that matter. Saluki bookstore will give you the best prices on books and will buy books back for better prices than anywhere else. 710 bookstore is also okay, but I prefer Saluki bookstore, which is close to the Towers (student accommodation). You don't necessarily need a car in the Dale. I didn't have a car the first two years and I was fine. If you're a first time college student, you'll learn what it is to walk. My friends and I literally walked everywhere. It's a great way to save money and enjoy the campus with friends. Be sure to buy a bike if you don't think you can wake up early enough to walk to class. Luckily, all of my classes were very close to where I lived, but now and then you'll get a class in a building that is all the way across campus. If you don't have a bike for that you may be looking at a 15 minute walk. Also, if you plan to live in the residence halls, try to live in Thompson Point! I lived there for 2 years and loved it. It's a much different atmosphere than the Towers (there aren't thousands of people jam-packed into three, 17 story buildings). Thompson Point is much more laid back and quiet, and is right next to campus lake and a great running trail (don't swim in the lake though or else you may turn into a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle). Also, I know it's hard with the excitement of starting college and the responsibility of living by yourself for the first time, but try to get involved in some sort of RSO (registered student organization). You can meet many people that way with the same interests as you. And try not to waste your time partying. It's easy at SIUC to find house parties and get into that scene, but the cops bust a party almost every weekend. There are also a ton of undercover cops at every bar, so if you're planning on going out with your friends and you're under 21, be aware that they will most likely find you! I knew of many people who were busted for underage drinking at a bar. And last but not least, go to class! I may sound like your parent for saying it, but honestly, if you force yourself to go to class then you will stay caught up, and studying for the tests will be easier. If you skip class a lot, you won't have a clue what's going on and will fall behind. If you skip class once, it's easy to keep skipping, so just try to go. Plus, college isn't about partying; it's about learning through life experiences and making awesome, life-long friends that share those experiences with you. I've had an amazing time there so far, and none of those memories that make up the best parts have anything to do with partying-which I did get into as a freshman. The college experience is so much more than that.

    Bang for the buck

As far as tuition goes, I believe SIUC is cheaper than EIU, WIU, and NIU (comparing size of school with tuition). The recreation center is absolutely incredible, which is free for students. It is a 213,747-square-foot) building and is one of the largest of its kind in the United States on a college campus. It has a large swimming pool, one large gym with racquetball and basketball courts, and another gym including 3 length basketball courts, many racquetball courts, a tennis court, a track, a 2nd floor track that overlooks the basketball/racquetball courts, multiple weightlifting and fitness rooms, along with plenty of treadmills and elliptical machines throughout the building. SIUC also built a new football stadium which is super nice, and students are allowed to attend sporting events for free. The student center is also filled with a cafeteria (Chick Fil-a, McDonald's, etc) Starbucks, a bowling alley with pool tables, an arcade, and many places to sit and study (you'll have to discover some of those awesome study places yourself ;) ). There is a craft shop under the student center where you can go each Saturday to build things and learn how to be artsy.

    Am enjoying being here

Carbondale is definitely no Chicago, or Champaign-Urbana for that matter, but it's a nice college town. The students make up more than half the town's population, so when students are back for the school year it seems pretty crowded around town. The great thing about Carbondale is that you can drive just a few minutes south of the University and not even realize you're near any sort of civilization. The national parks are awesome and make for a different sort of scenery that we're used to in Illinois :)

    Am learning a lot

I am currently going to be a senior at SIUC in Computer Engineering, and have found that the teaching in the engineering school is quite good. The classes are small enough that the teacher can get to know you personally and meet with you whenever you need. I come from the Champaign area and if I would have gone to the U of I, I probably couldn't have gotten to know my teachers personally since the class sizes are so big there.

dedicated to wanting an education--sure the parties are here if you want them---but I'm paying for my education I don't want to waste my money.

    Tips for prospective students

I'm glad I'm at SIU-C, its hard and you cant expect to skate through the year, if you want the grade you have to work for it. The Professors don't care if you hand in HW or even come to class, but it really makes a difference in your grade. Also the study sessions offered are a great help in studing and forming study groups. The Campus is great, I live in Thompson point and I really enjoy living on this side of the campus, I have a bike here but all my classes are within 10-15 minute walk, great exercise.

    Bang for the buck

I applied to alot of schools and SIUC gave me the best financial package.

    Am enjoying being here

I have made some great friends and the professors are willing to help if you ask for it. Weekends are fun and enjoy hanging out and SLEEPING!

    Am learning a lot

Its nothing like High School, to make the grade you have to study and go to class, but I am leaning alot and am enjoying class...Now if only I didn't have 8am classes

I hear SIU has a pretty good engineering program but I'm here for aviation so I say SIU is the best school for kids looking to pursue a career in aviation. You'll find that most schools will only offer just flight training but here at SIU you get the both of best world's so if you are looking to hold an A&P Certificate and a Commercial Pilot's License then SIU is your one stop shop of greatness.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are going into the aviation program here at SIU, most kids tend to major in AvFlight and minor in AvManagement, you should do a major/minor in AvTech and AvFlight. Most of the AvFlight/AvManagement students that I have talked to and are finishing up there schooling have told me that they wish they have taken AvTech/AvFlight because it seemed a bit funner. Well I'll tell you that it is definitely fun, especially if you like working with your hands and have a fascination with how things work. Now... I will admit that the work load will be a tad more but you have to remember that, in AvTech, your time is split between lecture and lab. Some of those credit hours will be time spent doing hand-on things and not like papers and essays and things like that.

    Bang for the buck

The AvTech program here has this great thing where you only pay for 15 credit hours worth of classes regarding the AvTech major. That is amazing!!!!! The flight program on the other hand will probably suck you dry but that is to be expected from a flight program. Don't take this the wrong way though. The flight training you get here is hands down top of the line. No question about it. Also, SIU's flight program isn't going under any time soon.

    Am enjoying being here

I have only been here for a year and a half and I am not lying when I say I have had the best experiences in my life at SIU!! I have already made a bunch a friends that I know I'll probably know them for the rest of my like. There is so much diversity here, I couldn't see anybody not being able to find a group of people to relate to and hang out here.

    Am learning a lot

I am a Sophomore this year and I am currently majoring in Aviation Technologies and minoring in Aviation Flight. SIU Carbondale has the best AvTech instructors in the nation, if not world. Their laid back but thorough teaching methods encourage you to want to learn the material that is required to this nation's and any aircraft up and running, safely. There is not one class that I have regretted taking and I don't believe there will ever be one!

    Anyone who parties.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring snacks. The dining halls were not that great. The points system is dumb, and the Dollar Tree will become your best friend.

    Bang for the buck

Go to a community college before you make any big steps toward a university! Save money and enjoy the transition from high school to college.

    Did enjoy being here

Personally, as I mentioned before, I did not care for SIUC. The school was not a good fit for my aspirations. The best fun I had was volunteering.

    Did learn a lot

I learned that I am definitely not into partying, and that SIUC was not the school for me. I prefer learning and studying over late night frat parties.

    any!

    Tips for prospective students

KEEP AN OPEN MIND FOR ANY COLLEGE YOU DECIDE TO LOOK AT OR CHOOSE TO ENROLL! Definitely come on a college visit like you should for any college! Also if you do choose to enroll I strongly recommend you attend as many of the events they have for new students, you meet so many new people and get free stuff! :) I also recommend that you check and join the RSO’s (registered student organizations). I would definitely try rushing! Going Greek may not be for everyone but you can always attend rush events and if you don’t think it’s for you then you don’t have to go anymore! Dining hall tip: if you want to swipe someone who isn’t an SIUC student than borrow a friend’s id to swipe them in, all they have to do is flash it to get in and your done! No biggie! Meal Plans: If you have extra meals left over at the end of the week GO cash in your remaining meals! Don’t waste them; it’s great for extra snacks in case you don’t have to time to make it to the dining halls for breakfast or lunch. SIUC has had a reputation for being known as a party school, but any college you go to is going to have parties; so don’t let that affect your decision! Your college experience is what YOU make of it, if you choose to go out every night and weekend then so be it, and it you don’t then don’t feel pressured to go out.

    Bang for the buck

I love the fact that once your enrolled you are locked in at a specific tuition rate and it won’t change! Also I think that it’s great that some states surrounding Illinois get instate tuition as well. I think that the tuition for SIUC is fairly reasonable and make sure you apply for FASFA it really helps, also apply for a lot of scholarships there is a ton on money out there. I know it annoying and monotonous but that’s what copy and paste is for and it pays off, trust me!

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoy being at SIUC, it has a rural small town atmosphere with plenty of activities going on all the time. It could be on or off campus; Giant City is off campus and is an awesome place to go and relax and relieve some stress, I really recommend going there

    Am learning a lot

SIUC has a plethora of classes and majors to choose from! I’m now a sophomore and I’m taking a dinosaur and reptile class, I am so excited to take a class that is so diverse from the other classes I’m required to take for my major! The gen. ed’s are easy as long as you actually go to class, which if you go to class and pay attention you can at least get a C. Sometimes teachers drop an exam grade which is awesome in case you don’t do so hot on one!

This school has everything you may want to do. Just ask around. If you are bored all the time then you aren't an exciting person to begin with because it so much to get into and most of it is free or no more than 10 dollars to attend. Don't sit in the room all day and expect fun to happen go do something you never thought you would do or meet some people to hang out with. In college you make your day.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to study or go home. You are paying for this even with financial aid because some of that money is loans. If you just want to come here for parties and don't plan to work or get mediocre grades, then its best you go to a junior college because the decisions you make now are going to follow you for the rest of your life. Refund checks... use them to pay back you loans at the end don't blow it all. Learn to manage your time and have fun its college. Just put your priorities first.

    Bang for the buck

This program free so I am earning six credits in four weeks for FREE!!! Including three meals of my choice at no extra cost. I love it.

    Am enjoying being here

I work so hard in this program but the fall will be nothing like this. I am going to be able to do as I please and still manage to get my work done because time manage skills is developing from this program. I love the campus though. It different from the city life and its a peaceful place to study.

    Am learning a lot

I am in the Future Scholars program and it is preparing me for the fall. I never studies this much so it is discipline. I am finally learning about other cultures history and how they lived. Speech is teaching how to overcome my fear in front of crowds. I recommend it for shy people/

    Tips for prospective students

I enjoyed the student activities and some of my fellow students but my experience here was mixed. I felt bored and uninspired as many of the faculty feel like they are just there to collect a check. If you expect a lot of help or interaction or a passionate faculty probably better options.

    Campus Safety

Safety is a serious thing on campus here. Police are present at all major locations where students socialize usually, and help buttons are located all over the campus with blue beacons to make them more noticable.

    Clubs and Activities

There are clubs for almost everything. Harry Potter fans can join the Quiddich club, people interested in martial arts can join the Aikido club, etc. etc.

Great for these types of students

People who enjoy nature, most definitely. The campus is beautiful in fall and spring. The curriculum is pretty well rounded, and for the dedicated student, everything you would need to succeed is available.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Next to the Amtrak, there is a quaint little shop called QQ Bubble Tea. The environment, service, and products served give you a warm fuzzy feeling. Also, Halloween is a big thing out here :)

    Bang for the buck

You can get your money's worth if you leave your dorm room enough. The opportunities are limitless for those who have passion. Don't be discouraged, ask questions, and the campus directs you in the right direction.

    What to do for fun

I can assure you, whatever type of fun you're into, you without a doubt can find it at SIUC. The recreation center and student center have various sports, martial arts, guest speakers, and crafts to cater to even the most refined people. Greek life is here, clubs are here, the whole nine.

    Food and Dining

In the dining halls, though its all you can eat, most times you may feel you have to put up with the cooking here. The dining hall schedules are frustrating at times and sometimes you may find yourself hungry with no way of eating until the next day. The restaurants and fast food places around are tolerable though, so if you have a bit of money this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

    Dorm Life

With SIU's lenient entry standards, some people are not focused on academic success, and take part in destructive habits. As long as you aren't involved, there shouldn't be many issues. Expect to see/hear drunk students on weekends and Thirsty Thursdays.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are as challenging and fulfilling as you make them. Because There are some students that have a harder time learning, and as a result some 101 courses seem to drag on and repeat basic information. Professor and T.As (teachers assistants, google it) are really responsive to the energy put in by the students; enthusiasm and asking questions are a plus.

    Tips for prospective students

Know why you're here. Even if you are in college to find out what you want to do with your life, be sure that that is the goal above all. It is really easy to forget your goals when in environments where non-productive habits are encouraged.

    In three sentences

The physical functionality of the school has its ups and downs. Though there are some students here with non-academic goals, there are just as many dedicated, aspiring professionals. The teaching and administration, and the opportunities offered are all available for those passionate enough to find them.

    Campus Safety

Overall, SIU is fairly safe. There are a few less civilized students that are occasionally too loud, or cause fights, or steal, etc. It's not perfect, but there are, to my knowledge, no shootings or murders at SIU.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a great variety of clubs and activities, including Greek organizations, honor societies, academic clubs (ie, History, Sociology, etc.), and even Student Political Organizations. Speaking of which, if any prospective Greens are looking at this review, I am going to attempt to start up a College Greens at SIU during the next year.

Great for these types of students

I would reccomend SIU to those students who want to get away from the big city, and to those who like nature.

    Bang for the buck

That depends on what one intends to do with his or her time at SIU. I, for one, think that SIU is an okay value. Not a great value, but not a bad one either.

    What to do for fun

Fun...hmm...I do not believe I am the right person to be asking that of. Fun, to me, is watching an interesting documentary, playing computer games such as Civilization IV, and listening to orchestra music. Carbondale and the surrounding area do have a wide variety of shops, restaurants, nightclubs (I believe that is the right term), a mall, the Shawnee National Forest, museums/historical sites, and two movie theaters

    Food and Dining

SIU's Student Center contains somewhere between 6-10 different dining institutions. There is a McDonalds, a Chick Fill-A, a Blimpe, and several others. There is an Italian place that I am rather fond of that has $4 pizza slices (it's actually more of a thin crust personal size pizza, not just a individual slice). Good value.

    Dorm Life

I live off-campus, so disregard the required star rating. I have no idea what dorm life is like at SIU so far.

    Academic Rigor

The classes I have attended so far are a great mix of challenging assignments intended to provoke critical thinking, and helpful, caring professors who want to see you do your best.

    Tips for prospective students

Know what you are getting yourself into before your first day at a major university. I left community college with a 3.6 GPA; after a semester at SIU, in which I had issues with financial aid, my own mental limitations (asperger's syndrome, but I have received assistance coping with it from several different university sources), and immunization requirements, I am looking at about a 2.5 GPA for this semester. In other words, look before you leap!

    In three sentences

Southern Illinois University's natural environment is one of its greatest strengths, with its lake, woods, and access to the rest of beautiful southern Illinois. The professors and courses I have taken so far have greatly assisted in expanding my knowledge and skill in writing and critical thinking. As I have often heard is the case, the college bureaucracy can be a bit confusing at times; but aren't all bureaucracies like that?

Great for these types of students

People who seek a certain degree and determined students.

    Tips for prospective students

Come check out the school first, and check out all the extra curricular activities and clubs that you can join. Don't be afraid of the size of the campus. It may look huge and spread out, but it only takes about a week to get used to. Don't be intimidated by your advisers, they are here to help you; They do an awesome job.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the environment here. People are very nice and there are a ton of activities to get involved in.

    Am learning a lot

Interesting classes to choose from. Professors are great and work well with you one on one.

Great for these types of students

If you are looking for a big school with the heart of a small school when it comes to reaching out to all of the students. Also students who are looking for a school in a small town, but there is still plenty of fun to be offered.

    Tips for prospective students

I advise you to try and get all of the scholarships you can. Especially if you are an Illinois resident.

    Bang for the buck

The school is nice, but there are a few things that needs to be fixed up and they are still making improvements to the school. However, whenever you are here make sure you check out the Student Rec Center.

    Am enjoying being here

I am enjoying being here. Even though it is a small town, there are great people here that are really nice and there is a lot to do.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning quite a lot my freshman year here at Southern Illinois. The teachers are great and even though it is a pretty big school, the teachers still are very good with offering attention and help.

    Campus Safety

Campus is kind of sketchy a lot of the time, I'd say. But they do have lighted paths that provide some peace of mind. There is also a Women's Transit service, which you can call at any time if you feel uncomfortable for whatever reason and catch a free ride home.

    Greek Life

    Meh...

    Clubs and Activities

Like I said, so many RSO's here. There's a club for everyone. Gianty City and the surrounding national parks are so beautiful. If you're an outdoorsy person, this is a wonderful place to be. Campus Lake is beautiful, and the surrounding wineries are also worth a visit.

Great for these types of students

Definite party scene, so if you're into that... Otherwise, I'd say students who are passionate about what they're doing. That carries a lot of weight-- anywhere, probably-- but definitely here.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition prices can get a little hard to handle, but I think most people receive a decent amount of Financial Aid and they do offer a lot of scholarships. It's really just important to get as involved in the college community as you can, opportunities will present themselves and you'll get your money's worth.

    What to do for fun

Carbondale has a pretty great night life. As a matter of fact, there's a small newspaper that runs around called Night Life that will tell you pretty much anything that's going on around town. There are so many RSO's for pretty much anything you can imagine. Definitely get as involved as you can, because the opportunities are there.

    Food and Dining

It's obviously not very good... but Grinell has some good sandwiches that are actually pretty cheap, and you can use leftover meal plan points to grab groceries. Other than that, there are so many great places to eat around town. Mo Wallace is a diamond in the rough, behind Longbranch-- probably the best food in town. And the Mexican Grocery Store right next door has super cheap authentic Mexican. A quick run of the strip finds some great eateries at reasonable prices.

    Dorm Life

I lived in University Hall for my first year, which is basically a melting pot for all different types of students... mostly whoever signed up for a dorm late. Regardless, even though there were incessant parties and noise and fiascos of sorts, it was a lot of fun to live there and I made lifelong friends that I wouldn't trade for the world. Definitely a plus to have your own room to salvage any quiet-time you can muster. Living on-campus your first year is a great way to meet people, but I wouldn't recommend it once your course load picks up because of all the distractions.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on what you're studying, courses definitely vary in difficulty. As an Art student, it's a wonderful program with a wonderful faculty, but you need to be focused and willing to spend a lot of out-of-class time working on projects. It's incredibly important to make a strong impression with your professors-- do that, and it should be smooth sailin'. They just want to know that you're dedicated.

    Tips for prospective students

Just get involved. It sounds dumb and you probably won't want to jump into stuff at first, but you really should. There are so many opportunities here, it's just up to you what you do with them.

    In three sentences

Once a Saluki, always a Saluki. ONE SENTENCE IS ALL I NEED SUP.

    Dorm Life

it's really not that bad. the elevators are either broken or takes to long. and if you don't mind sharing your bathroom with two other people (sweet style). then the dorm life is the place for you.

    Academic Rigor

academics there are challenging, and they provide a lot of tutoring for people who need it.

    Tips for prospective students

for freshman students make sure you get your GPA up for your first semester in college. because it will make a difference in the long run. Being able to prioritize your time is golden.

    Tips for prospective students

Ask your roommate lots and lots of questions before you move in. The personality test that they make you take might match you up with someone who's seemingly ok, but there's a ton of people that lie on them. I found out my first roommate wasn't at all who she said she was.

    Bang for the buck

It's relatively cheap. None of the colleges back home even came close. It's a beautiful campus, the teachers are fantastic, and you can walk from one end of the campus to the other in 15 minutes.

    Am enjoying being here

The dorms are difficult to live in. It's hard adapting to the noise and a LOT of kids here act crazy. After a while it calms down though. Aside from that, I love Carbondale. It's beautiful and there are tons of things to do. The strip is right next to campus though, and it's nice being able to walk only ten minutes if you want to go out to eat or shop.

    Am learning a lot

The classes I'm taking are informative, and we have a lot of good professors. I've only run into one whose teaching style was not effective. Just about every teacher is willing to help you, and there are so many staff members you can always find someone to help with your classes.

the rules and safety here are typical to all universities and colleges. we have our share of incidents...but it is a midwestern share, which is nice. i have the same advice for anyone at any college...never pick up a drink you didn't purchase or have purchased by someone you trust. take appropriate safety measures for securing your belongings. the buddy system is always preferred at night.

    Greek Life

we have a lot of it. all the major fraternities and sororities have a charter here. with that said, i am woefully under-informed on this subject.

    Clubs and Activities

i can't say enough. there is plenty for any kind of activity and personality.

Great for these types of students

we are a working-class university with plenty of first-generation, foreign and non-native english speakers. plenty of our students come from chicago. we are a big school with a rural mentality, many students are quite happy with the slower pace of living. we are quite diverse, i could see anyone finding themselves at home here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

well, we have the only school with a saluki as a mascot. a liberal arts building so hideous (and apparently prize winning, at one time) that it borders on cartoonish legend. club trazz is a fun hotspot. the apple festival, the vulture festival, the lights fantastic parade, and the shawnee national forest.

    Bang for the buck

still among the most inexpensive state schools in the midwest. cafeteria food isn't the best...but there is a lot of it. the library is new with plenty of tech, librarian, and writing help. services are plentiful and very good! there is quality for all levels of student.

there are always live bands playing in various kinds of clubs. the rec center has a great gym and swimming pool. there bowling and billiards in the student centers. lots of live theater. if you aren't into the standard forms of entertainment, there is a club for nearly every social or sporting activity.

    Food and Dining

very good chinese and indian food close to campus. one or two decent places for pizza. (cummare's in murphysboro is the best in the region) harbaugh's cafe is a favorite spot for breakfast. plenty of coffeehouses, but allow me to recommend longbranch cafe. there are plenty of restaurants nearby for a variety of tastes.

    Dorm Life

acceptable for undergraduates and families. rooms are standard compared to other universities. (i know, that isn't saying much) if you are in an upperclassmen dorm, the life upgrades considerably.

    Academic Rigor

again, it depends on your program. i am in the rhetoric and composition side of the english department. it is small and intense, but you will walk away with an outstanding appreciation and understanding of the field. research development is comprehensive. balancing teaching classes with your own studies is a great challenge.

    Tips for prospective students

Great for these types of students

This school is great for easy-going, warm weather-loving, adults. SIU has a reputation among young adults as being a bit of a party school. This is because it has warmer weather allowing students to be outside longer during the week and on weekends. Warmer weather creates a fun, easy-going atmosphere that students use to hang out and have a few drinks. At every college through out the states you can find a party.

    Bang for the buck

As an Illinois State University it is not as expensive as a private school. In my opinion whatever money you spend on your education is money well spent. You can not get very far in todays society without an education. Technology is progressing and in response our knowledge has to continue to progress as well. This is made possible through education. People say you can't buy happiness, but in most cases, education can.

    What to do for fun

Southern Illinois has great weather pretty much all year round. This provides the residents with an abundant of possible activities. There are a lot of outdoor clubs provided by the school and dorm life. Grills are set up in designated areas on campus where students and all of their friends can grill up some burgers and play some games outside. The campus lake is surrounded by paths that can be used for walking, running and I could imagine bike riding!

    Food and Dining

The food plan is set up so that you have x amount of meals throughout the week. Whatever meals or points you do not spend at the end of the week can be 'cashed' and used in other convenient stores throughout campus where you can buy popcorn or chips, things you can have in the dorm. This is great for me because I love eating popcorn while watching a movie or studying for a test.

Clubs and activities usually revolve around who's Greek week it is. Greeks are pretty much the main source of entertainment on this campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

some popular annual events include Polar bear weekend (hosted by local bar establishments) , and Players ball weekend (hosted by local fraternities)

    What to do for fun

There isn't really much to do at SIUC when it comes to night life. Of course you have the occasional greek weeks that host events and parties, then you have the random house parties ever so often..but other than that..empty nights.

    Food and Dining

Dorm food really isn't that bad, but every now and then you do develop a taste for a nice home cooked meal. Off campus restaurants are decent, but not really any soul food restaurants.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is new, fun, and very exciting, especially during freshmen year. Of course you have to take the good with the bad: bad roommate, ugly dorm, bad dorm food..but overall, dorm life is amazing freshmen year, but after that..start looking for an apartment.

    Academic Rigor

I'm a computer science major and at times i find it hard to understand some of the international professors, but that is to be expected at any university. Other than that, SIUC is pretty well rounded when it comes to academics the professors who teach them.

    Tips for prospective students

Entering SIUC for the first time freshmen year, be sure to take care of business first! Partying, night life, and the club are not going anywhere. You are in college to get your education first. Work hard now, play harder later.

    In three sentences

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a great place to have fun in an academic environment, while also gaining respect for your perspective filed of study.

    Campus Safety

SIUC has on campus security daily. So walking around campus doesnt fell so un-safe.

    Clubs and Activities

SIUC has well over 200 RSO (registered student organizations) We have something for EVERYONE. From greek life and NAACP, to golf club and Rugby. We literally ave everything you could think of. ...and if we don't, our school allows you to start your own clubs.

    Bang for the buck

I definitely think SIUC is a affordable school. Though no tuition is really cheap, SIUC is a great value especially when compared to other institutions.

    What to do for fun

Siuc is known for its events. Whether its Player's ball, homecoming, Kappa Carnival, Open Mic, AKApollo, Soul4U awards, themed parties, Rocky horror picture film night or simply a bowling night, there is ALWAYS something to do.

    Food and Dining

Our dining halls are great. Loads of choices.

    Dorm Life

Loved my dorm experience. I didnt choose my roomate, but I loved her. THey matched us very well. The dorms are a nice size and we have very limited rules.

    Academic Rigor

I was a great student in high school and Im very self motivated. I thought college would be the same. But the acedemic load is alot different than in high school. Though its hard, its very manageable.

    Tips for prospective students

The most important thing I've learned from college is that your priorities MUST be in order. College isnt JUST about acedemics, there is alot you will encounter (e.g. parties, greeks, clubs, sports, etc) Your experience is better if your a well-rounded student. But you must always remember that your first order of business is class work. Your social life never trumps school work no matter what.

    In three sentences

SIUC is a great University. We have one of the top rated campuses in the nation. Along with our beautiful campus, we have tons of acedemic opportunities for just about all career paths.

Halloween is huge here be prepared.

    Bang for the buck

Overall, the cost is average. Apartments are a bit pricey here but nothing outrageous. I am saving a ton going here for radiation therapy over SLU.

    What to do for fun

Join a club, go the rec, play intramural sports the possibilities are endless. Most importantly know how to have fun, not everything needs to be serious. Go dancing or watch sports a Pinch Penny or Buffalo Wild Wings.

    Food and Dining

Good food at the student center, but there are tons of great local restaurants. Such as, Fat Patties, El Grecco, and Don Taco. For those over 21 there is a good bar scene, and southern Illinois is home to dozens of wineries.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is excellent and there is a great rec center and Wi Fi campus wide. There are plenty of things to do from concerts to fashion shows so be prepared to rock out when its time to relax.

    Academic Rigor

This school is difficult and the professors demand perfection, especially in the engineering and medical professions.

    Tips for prospective students

Tip one take advantage of the huge library and other on campus resources. Tip two join a program, get out there and meet new people and try something new. Tip three study, you are going to need to.

    In three sentences

SIUC is a wonderful school with a diverse population and amazing programs. It offers radiation therapy which is a hard to find major and has many club activities. Furthermore, the professors are top notch and the library rocks.

    Campus Safety

The campus police are the best. Since I've been at the school the only time I've heard that there was a fight was if it was at an off-campus party. Violence is not tolerated on campus and anyone caught committing any crime is dealt with appropriately. The campus police patrol all night as well as the RA's (in shifts).

    Greek Life

The Fraternities and sororities...there are many of them on campus. And they usually host events annually.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and so many things to do. And usually ever club is hosting something at least one day a week.

Great for these types of students

The Culinary club is great for students that love to cook or looking to learn how to cook. Any of the creative writing classes are amazing for aspiring writers, BTO (Black Togetherness Organization) is great for anyone looking to make a change in the world and society.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a polar plunge into the campus lakes during the cold winter months. The Rec holds their own biggest loser competition (the winner gets a money prize) The Kappas host their annual player's ball (a big thing among the African American students)

    Bang for the buck

SIUC is a state school, a public school, so the tuition isn't that expensive, only about $23,536 a year. But the school comes packed. Once you get down there, most people never want to come home. People say its a party school, but most schools are no matter how you look at it. Anyone looking for a party will, in some way, find a party. The library is amazing and huge, and comes with a nice little cafe on the first floor. The campus woods are beautiful and usually you see a deer or two running around at night. The campus is humungous and because of that there is never a dull moment. The teachers are caring and the students are open-minded. Its a great school. And Carbondale is a great town.

    What to do for fun

There are so many things to do for fun. There a choice between doing things at the recreational center (The Rec) which includes rock climbing, kayaking on the campus lake, etc. Or you can see what the dorms are hosting during the weekends, the RA's usually have things planned. Some students go and hang out at the Student Center. There, you can go and buy things or take classes at the craft shop, bowl, eat (soooo many nice restaurants) shoot pool, watch movies, or see what the international lounge is holding. If you want to go off campus for fun, there are many clubs, restaurants, shopping malls and stores, movie theaters, and so much more. If you're feeling up to it, you can even go to the peach orchard!

    Food and Dining

On campus there are 3 big cafeterias, one in each section of the campus. The food there is great and the meal plans are awesome. You get so many meals a week and you can go to any cafeteria to eat. Sometimes there's a chef that provides specials made to order at the two larger dinning halls, and his food is always good. Plus there are 3 convenient store-like cafeterias. This places are located somewhat near the dinning halls. They offer fast food, junk, and so many more goodies that college kids want, and you can use your meal plan meals to purchase goods as well.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are great. Of course there are students that like to play loud music, or host parties, but the RA's are pretty strict on noise. All the dorms are extremely clean during move-in, its up to the student to keep them clean throughout the year. During the hot and humid summer, spring, and fall months the air conditioning is amazing. During the winter and colder months, the heating is to die for. The dorms are the best and provide a wonderful living/college experience. You even get to match yourself to a roommate.

    Academic Rigor

The classes and teachers are very thorough. They just don't teach. They make sure that the students understand the material, can do the work on their own, and can talk knowledgeably about the material. Not only do students have to attend regular classes, but many classes have lab days that must be completed as well. The lab days are really helpful, especially when you were unable to understand the work during lecture on while studying. So much help and thoroughness of teachers almost make it impossible to fail classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to ask questions, because someone is always willing to help. Make sure you become familiar with the campus grounds maps and the location of buildings because the campus is huge, and its easy for newcomers to get lost. Find some sort of group to get into, whether its a study group, or a student organization; its the safest and funnest way to build lasting friendships.

    In three sentences

SIUC has the most to offer, with a rather nice sized student population (about 20,000), huge campus, there's no way to not find something to get into. There are hundreds of clubs, lots of sororities and fraternities, and the teachers are the best. Plus, this is the nicest college town I've ever been to.

Small town Nature loving Chicagans Athletes

    Bang for the buck

this school is very open to its community. you see a lot of that. Such as swim meets, dawgs nite out, homecoming, etc

    What to do for fun

There is alot of wooded areas due to this school being in a rural area. if you love nature, you'll love this school. They have a huge lake but i wouldnt recommend swimming in it. there's canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boats. Hiking is wonderful because they have so many nature trails. There are a few good places to hang out. It's called the strip they have a good variety of restaurants, bars, and a few clubs. nightlife is ok. you have to be 19 to get in though which is annoying. the school hosts alot of activities for its students such as dawgs nite out which includes a mechanical bull, dance dance revolution ,henna tattoos, and a photo booth. they also have movie nights that costs just a $2 for students and the movies are always the ones that havent even came out into the theatres yet!

    Food and Dining

the food is ok. in the mess halls you have an all you can eat buffet which is part of your meal plan. they have everything from salads to sandwiches, smoothies to ice cream and pizza. in the student center they have of course, a starbucks(like every other college^^) McDonalds, chinese, a convenience store, chick-fil-a, and blimpies.

    Dorm Life

The dorm rooms are a little on the small side. it can definitely be frustrating if you and your roommate have two total opposite personalities, and have boundary issues but i guess thats part of the college experience. there are always going to be drunk or high students in your hallway or next door making noise and running everywhere at 4am. if that doesnt wake you up, the fire alarms they pull certainly will because you have to get out of your bed and walk down flights of stairs go outside and wait until the fire dept comes. but it is close to the campus; just one long bridge walk away.

    Academic Rigor

. some states get in state tuition which is helpful. There are a good amount of clubs called RSOs(registered student organizations) but the downside is they only hold the RSO fair for one day and it can get pretty crowded. You are hardly ever bored in this college if you find the right people to hang out with.

    Tips for prospective students

If you like the quiet and like to keep things drama free. i would not recommend this school to you. The football games are awesome and there is definitely some school spirit but nothing that will blow your mind. If you are a smalltown kind of person that doesnt need anything big or complicated, this school is definitely for you.

    In three sentences

The students definitely party enough. The campus is a right size. The overall majority of the students are from chicago and there's not much diversity.

    Clubs and Activities

There are TONS of clubs and organizations to join on campus that offer things for pretty much anyone. There are clubs for people who are into rocks and minerals, clubs for gamers, chess club, and a ton of other things. Definitely too many to name here.

    What to do for fun

The best thing about Carbondale is that there is a lot to do and most of the places you can walk to. The student center is one of the best places to go for fun. It has a bunch of fast food places, bowling, billards, and even a small movie theater. A good place to go to is Giant City, which is a national park with trails and stuff.

    Food and Dining

The food in the dining halls is okay. There is usually a really good meal once or twice that you don't want to miss. My favorite meals were tacos, chicken strips, and nachos. Some people say Lentz is the best dining hall, but I think the food is all the same.

    Dorm Life

Pretty much everyone I've met in the dorms are helpful. If you ever have any questions, you can ask one of the resident assistants on the floor; Or one of the hall directors. They are there to help students with any problems they have.

    Academic Rigor

Classes at SIU are generally pretty challenging, except for maybe your 100 level classes. They are not too difficult, though, if you keep up with your work and studying.

    Tips for prospective students

The most important things in college are to manage your time wisely and make sure you know when papers are due and when you will get tested. Most of your grades in college will depend on how well you do on your papers and tests. There is almost never any busy work like there is in high school.

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is one of the reasons that my parents were so adamant about me attending this university. They have an on campus police stations, officials that patrol campus during the day and night, and emergency stations that can call someone if you need to.

    Food and Dining

The food is good, after a while you get tired of it and being that there are only three dining halls on campus there aren't many options. But then again, food is food.

    Dorm Life

The residence halls are also very nice at Southern Illinois. There are many choices and you also have an option to live in an LLC, or a Living Learning Community, where all of the studients living there are involved in the same major and are taking the same classes as you.

    Academic Rigor

Academically, there are courses that will be easy for you and also courses that will challenge you. However, there will never be a time that you are alone. Students are all very nice, and professors encourage you to meet with them if you have any difficulties. Tutoring is also available in the different colleges you may be involved in. There is no reason to fail.

    Tips for prospective students

I would encourage prospective students to be open minded and outgoing. There are hundreds of different Registered Student Organizations (RSO's) to get involved with and the benefits are greater than you would think. Networking, meeting new people outside of your typical group of friends, and learning new things are just a few of the benefits of getting involved.

    In three sentences

Southern Illinois University in Carbondale is overall an extremely promising university. At first glance, or during your first official visit you may not appreciate it. However, once you enroll and spend your first year there, you really begin to see how much it has to offer.

SIUC provides a extremely exceptional food and dining program set up for students who are living on campus. To the point where they are always accessed to food even in later hours of the night.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at SIUC is a great experience for students because it allows you to interact with all type of new individuals and build everlasting bonds with people who can eventually make a drastic impact on your life.

    Academic Rigor

As far as academics the university is very strict on the status of their students and are very quick to put students on academic probation if they are not living up to their full potential. As a student at our school if you find yourself failing under a 2.0 GPA for more than one semester you then become eligible for resignation from the university . Fortunately for myself I have been able to keep a good academic status my entire time at SIUC.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips for incoming freshman and current students would be stay focus. There are a lot of things to distract students from their main purpose of being in school, but yet as a student you must have what really interests you and stick with and don't allow anything to cloud your judgment.

    In three sentences

Southern Illinois is known as a party but yet we have some of the best programs in the country. More specifically our Radio & Television as well as our Business program. I am proud to be able to recommend new students to our school as we as be apart of both colleges.

    What to do for fun

Southern Illinois still has an active Greek and house-party culture. There are many places on the strip for food, shopping, etc. The Rec Center has canoes, kayaks, camping gear, etc. available for students who want to take advantage of the area's scenic trails and lakes.

    Food and Dining

This is mediocre. The main restaurants in the food hall are Blimpie and McDonald's. There is Asian and vegan/vegetarian cuisine available, as well.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorm, but there are always fliers up for activities for these students. The university takes pains to floor people within disciplines, so it's easier to find a study-partner. I've never spoken to a student who's complained about their dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

The university tries very hard to accommodate low-income, inner-city students with little academic prowess. Quite a lot of resources are dedicated to propping up these students. This is often reflected in the in-class environment and the professors's expectations.

    Tips for prospective students

Double-verify everything they tell you in the Financial Aid Office. Secure summer aid early, or there will be none left. Be aware that everything is overpriced in town, and can usually be found cheaper just outside town limits.

    In three sentences

SIUC used to be infamous as a party school, but, with heavy increases to it's athletics dept, this university is trying to turn itself into a sports school. An impressive library and resources dept is nearly the full extent to which they've shown themselves to value our academic advancement. With professors having gone on strike last semester, to a serious percentage of classes being led by graduate students, this school is only academically challenging in the sense that it is challenging to learn from those who themselves are only barely proficient in a discipline.

    What to do for fun

On the Southern Illinois University-Carbondale campus there are a lot events and recruitment going on. They have bowling, Pool, and a rec center for you to use for exercise and practice purposes. Be sure to try out the Resource Student Organizations (RSO).

    Food and Dining

The food down south is so tasteful and appealing. However, it's not the best resource for healthy food all the time. You should consider managing your eating habits, otherwise you fall into the chain of students who will probably gain ten to twenty pounds over there freshman year.

    Dorm Life

Living in the dorms can be overwhelming due to the different personalities that your surrounded by. There are a lot of incoming freshmen, such as myself, that are excited to be here, especially when they are not under parental vision. The best thing I found beneficial, that helps me to stay focus, is to surround myself around people who set goals for themselves.

    Academic Rigor

The curriculum is more challenging than high school, however, if your mind is set on success, shoot for the stars. In other words, use as many resources as you can. I look at the academic curriculum as the key tools that I will need for my success in the future.

    Tips for prospective students

Be your best at anything you do. Also, never be afraid to explore different aspects in life because you never know what is in store for your up-coming professional career. Even if you think the money is going to be an issue, think of the situation as an investment on your career.

    In three sentences

Southern University is more than a College campus. In other words, it can be looked upon as a community that links to almost every small business around the campus. They also have one of the top 5% business schools in the nation.

    Campus Safety

Campus Safety is a top priority of SIUC. There are locations all over campus that are stations which alert the Department of Public Safety to be on scene as soon as possible. There are also Bright Light Paths for students traveling on campus at night. These ensure a safe pathway with streetlights.

There is also a rock climbing RSO that is very popular due to the opportunities southern Illinois offers geographically i.e. Giant City and Little Grand Canyon.

    Food and Dining

SIUC offers three different dining halls scattered across campus. Most of them have a buffet-like atmosphere, but they often order food made to order. We also have different express areas for made to order food that use meal points for currency as well as cash.

    Dorm Life

I find dorm life very entertaining. You meet new people from all over the state. Living with so many people can be frustrating at times, but it makes socialization much easier and provides a closer social bond between reisdents of the same hall.

    Academic Rigor

While you are expected to be a student with academic integrity, many professors understand that knowledge is not simply defined by one or two qualities. Many students are able to express themselves sufficiently and express their knowledge in different ways in order to accomplish a good academic standing.

    Campus Safety

There are always police driving by especially at night time! The campus is brightly lit at all times, with emergency stations all over. If you are going somewhere at night, there is always someone who will be willing to walk with you to make you feel even more secure. There is even a campus safety car that will take you to where you want to go at night. Also, the taxis are very inexpensive!

    Clubs and Activities

There is literally a club for anything that you can think of!

    What to do for fun

Go paddle boating on the lake in Thompson Point. It is great exercise and it is free with a student ID. Also bowling in the the student center (they have wonderful deals and discounts on certain days).

    Food and Dining

The dining hall food is just ok. Some items are better than others, but nothing compares to a nice home cooked meal. The best place for food is Grinnell. They have a larger variety of items, and even a salad bar that is phenomenal! Grinnell was definitely my favorite place to dine!

    Dorm Life

I stayed in Thompson Point (Brown Hall), and I LOVED it. Since I did not stay where the larger dorms were it was almost as if I were living in a small community or suburban area of campus. It was never too loud, and there were not a lot of distractions.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are just the right level of complication. If I ever had any trouble with something the teacher was available to help. Also, there are several tutors that are available all over campus, and there is sure to be one that will fit in with your schedule.

    Tips for prospective students

Join many clubs. The more clubs you join, the more people you will meet, and the more opportunities for scholarships and internships you will have.

    Campus Safety

I wouldn't walk any where on campus by myself, female or male. The campus safety had declined in recent years (read the news). Recently, a student fell out of a 4th story dorm window, students were robbed at gun point in another dorm, and multiple fights broke out.

SIU is raising prices and the cost of attending is beginning to outweigh the benefit.

    What to do for fun

Bars, house parties, shopping, hiking, beaches, spelunking, social events on and off campus.

    Food and Dining

Dorm food isn't that bad and there is large variety. I wouldn't worry about the freshman 15lbs. The campus is huge so you will get plenty of exercise as long as you walk to class and the Rec Center is free and close to the dorms. Carbondale is full of great local places that are open late and some 24/7. Some chains, but no donut shops and limited coffee houses.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are fun and great way to meet new people. They were like a small community on each floor. The noise echos so its hard to sleep some nights. The dorms are locked 24/7 so you need an ID to enter. SIU has added multiple tvs, pool tables, and kitchen areas to the dorm lobby's for something for students to do.

    Academic Rigor

Find a major that will give you actual skills, not general knowledge. Classes are challenging, but go to class, and do your work and you will easily do well. Keep in mind some classes take attendance and it counts towards your grade.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the school and find a dorm that you feel safe in. Walk around campus and get a good feel for the school and surrounding area. There are a tons of outdoor activities, but limited shopping in the area. Not a big campus for the want-to-be greeks.

    In three sentences

I have found it best to have your courses picked out and plan setup before meeting with the counselors to setup classes. Professors are more than willing to help you understand the material, don't be afraid to ask for help. Don't walk around campus by yourself, especially at night.

    Dorm Life

I currently live in an apartment, so I can not completely say what the dorm life is like. I hear good things like its cheaper and bad things like curfew is at 9pm for freshmen and midnight for other people.

    Academic Rigor

All the teacher I know, know me by name. They try their hardest to educate you to their highest ability.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend that a future student gets a blue sticker if able. The red stickers are nice in that you can park almost everywhere, but the blue stickers will give you more available parking choices. It might be a little more expensive, but worth it.

    In three sentences

SIU-C is highly educational, and student driven. The scenic campus is located on the edge of the city Carbondale with anything you could desire in reach. Only issue is parking is not as high as the student count.

The school isn't big on sports unless its men's basketball, the school spirit sort of lacks.

    What to do for fun

Well there isn't really much to do for fun, we have a bowling alley in the student center, there is a movie theater in the local plaza, which you can get to on the Saluki Express, but as far as shopping, I do all of mine online, because the mall lacks a lot of stores.

    Academic Rigor

They have great professors and grad students who are well in the know of what they are talking about.

    Tips for prospective students

It is expensive, for housing and the meal plan. The housing is decent, it is better to live in Thompson Point than the Brush Towers, because it is a bit more quiet. But, you will pay the price for it, because it's about a grand or so difference.

There are well lit paths on campus through the woods and around campus and the city, if have to walk at night. There is a late night bus route, that is free to students.

There is a lot of live music and a big nightlife scene. IT is fun but remember not to stay out to late if you have an Eight AM class!

    Bang for the buck

This is a great school to attend with lots of entertainment activity,. The town is also welcoming and friendly.

    What to do for fun

Southern Illinois is home to Shawnee national forest and many other outside recreational areas that are not to far off to drive to. Check out garden of the gods, Makanda boardwalk( for shopping) and giant city park- all within a 20 minute drive.

    Food and Dining

Locally well ran restaurants that are health conscious and serving up locally raised food. Good variety of culture. Lots of coffee shops to sit and do your homework in.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are on campus, so you are very close to your classes. Living off campus is easy with apartment complex and rental property all over town. It is a small town that if you lived off campus, you could easily still get to class on your bike in 10 minutes from across town, but driving and parking can take a lot longer.

    Academic Rigor

Academic Rigor is up to you. Apply yourself, attend classes and be prepared when you come to class. That means read your books and stay connected through the online system learning tool. Also take advantage of tutoring centers and help from your Teacher assistants. Make sure your teacher's know you on a first name basis. Build your charecter by being a productive and self motivated student!

    Tips for prospective students

The weather in southern Illinois changes quickly, one day it might be a nice sunny day and the next very cold and rainy. Bring rain boots and a good jacket. A bicycle or skateboard is a great way to get around campus or even across town very quickly.

I joined a Women's Club Volleyball team. There are over 400 clubs to choose from, which I think is cool!

Great for these types of students

Students who like a laid back atmosphere and cultural differences.

    Bang for the buck

SIUC is definitely not worth spending the money, unless majoring in certain strong points such as dental hygiene and automotive that the college provides.

    What to do for fun

I've come to learn that a lot of the people here rely on alcohol to have fun, which really isn't my thing. I normally go up to St. Louis to see my boyfriend on the weekends, but now I have a job so I can make some money to pay off my debts.

    Food and Dining

SIUC's food could be a lot more nutritious and fresh. I do like the buffet style though

    Dorm Life

The dorms are loud and often at an awkward temperature. I think that SIUC could spend more on the dorms and less on things like the arena and advertising. One of my peers actually sat on a chair in the hall way and it broke; he is not overweight.

    Academic Rigor

So far, I have found SIUC's academic rigor to be laid-back and easy. I have not gotten into my major much though.

    Tips for prospective students

If deciding to attend SIUC, make sure that you go into depth about the academics offered and what kind of resources that are here that suits you best. There are tons of resources and smaller classrooms, which are nice. Make sure to check into multiple colleges though and pick which one is right for you.

    In three sentences

SIUC is well diversified and has been a great first year experience. However, I think that it is overpriced and hard to find help when needed. SIUC needs to focus more on its students and academics rather than its advertising and athletics.

    Campus Safety

The campus does as much as it can with providing safety to the students. Some say that the campus is dangerous, but I believe it to seem dangerous only for those who allow themselves to be around a dangerous group of people or who do not take the proper precautions in protecting themselves and their belongings.

    Clubs and Activities

Depending on your interests, there are plenty of clubs, organizations, and activities that you can participate in to gain hands-on experience in your intended field of study/career.

    Bang for the buck

There are plenty opportunities to gain hands-on experience in my intended major. The advisement board also works with you to find opportunities to obtain internships and externships that will help you along the path toward your career goals.

    What to do for fun

The student center has a bowling and billiards hall, and a movie theater. Other things to do for fun around campus include participating in student organizations, going to sporting events, participating in intramural sports, working-out at the recreation center, and attending special events put on by the university.

    Food and Dining

There are two dining halls (one on either side of campus) that have the same meal options as one another each day. Though the quality isn't the greatest, a lot of the food is prepared from locally grown/produced product. There are also two convenience expressways. The express on the east side of campus not only includes chips, frozen pizzas, and everything else that the one on west campus has, but it also has an option for students to order pizza, made-to-order salads, and other warm meals with the use of their dining meal points.

    Dorm Life

Though I am unsure of the dorm life experience on the east side of campus where the three dorm towers are located, I can say that the west side of campus is a great place to be for students who are serious about their college career. The west side of campus contains a few different three-story residence halls that are specific to intended-majors, there are a couple all-male halls as well as all-female. The major-specific halls are great for those who reside in them as it gives them a greater opportunity to work with others from their major, or one similar to their major. Being with others who are interested in a similar career as you provides a great chance to create friends in the field, network, and even collaborate on multiple projects.

    Academic Rigor

During the first few semesters, SIUC's general education courses are easily passed as long as the student puts forth the effort to complete their work. As a student progresses into their major (core) courses, they become much more challenging and demanding to provide the student with a good foundation for their career.

    Tips for prospective students

Find an organization which will help you develop skills you will need for your future career. Socialize, network, and become friends. Work hard and show your professors and instructors that you want to be in school.

    In three sentences

SIUC has a beautiful campus. Getting involved as soon as I walked onto campus was one of my greatest decisions thus far. Success comes easily at this school if you are willing to try.

    Academic Rigor

Pretty much the same as any academic rigor in other schools. Instructors do however, depending on the topic, will make it challenging, but not too challenging where you can't do it. They understand that you are working a full time job.

    Tips for prospective students

Those that are located in the Florida Panhandle, look into the degree Workforce Education and Development through this school. It's a lot of dedicated time for one year (every other weekend-so it doesn't interfere with duty during the week), but you take all core classes that year graduating with a BS (kicker is must have AS already-or close to finishing). Those in the Air Force....they accept CCAF to fulfill the AS requirement!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't come here if you're afraid of drinking yourself sick or hate it when people drink around you. Beer is almost as common as water around here and you'll have to be able to control yourself around it, but also put up with it a lot too. Also the dorms/meal plan combo can get rather expensive and it's best to get an apartment as soon as possible

If you're an independent learner or learn best from teaching yourself out of the book, you'll do just fine.

    Bang for the buck

The cost of attending here compared to the effort and passion of the professors is ridiculous. This school costs way too much money for me to have a published researcher reading verbatim from a two year old slide show.

    What to do for fun

There's ALWAYS something to do. If you're bored, you aren't trying very hard to have fun.

    Food and Dining

The food in the dining halls might be the best thing about the school.

    Dorm Life

SIUC is practically one constant party depending on which dorm you live in.

    Academic Rigor

The rigor of the classes depends on the professor. Some professors are there to research and so they only do the bare minimum of what they have to as far as teaching, which in some cases makes the class easy, and in other cases makes the class nearly impossible.

    Tips for prospective students

Do your best to figure out what classes are right for you and your requirements on your own. My first semester at SIUC (I was a freshman) my advisor made my schedule and picked my classes for me. It nearly ruined my GPA. Sit in the front row in class. The professors already see you as nothing more than a number, and sitting in the back row most certainly isn't going to help.

    In three sentences

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is not a student oriented university. If you are okay with being nothing more than a number, then this is the school for you because most of the professors really only care about their research. On a more positive note, parties are always easy to find, any day of the week.

    Bang for the buck

Even before I was accepted, I emailed a few professors, and they helped me decide what classes to take and were a major help. I can't go on enough about the great state parks nearby- I love the great outdoors, so this was a great bonus for me. It seems there is always something to do in Carbondale, wether you are on campus or not.

Safety is all ways there. Security is very well visible on campus, friendly through out campus and community.

Excellent! The Greek Life is always active and there is always something to do every weekend. Many organizations to join.

    Clubs and Activities

Visit SalukitNet for details. I can't even do this part justice. You have to experience the service and sisterhood/brotherhood to get the real feel for this. Excellent programs!

Great for these types of students

Diversity is the key. If you want to encounter many nations, come to SIUC. From the faculty to the students, this campus is a melting pot!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The cardboard box racing events are so much fun at SIUC just as a mention of things. This event is held at campus lake every year not to mention the many other events that come to SIUC. (See SalukiNet).

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is GREAT! Check this out on SalukiNet.

    What to do for fun

SIUC's campus is filled with lots of things to do on and off campus. SIUC has a student recreational center and a student center for gathering. Sports events from basketball, foot ball, track and field, baseball, and etc. Don't forget to do some shopping on campus or visit the many different merchants that cater to student night life. The experience will give you great memories of SIUC.

    Food and Dining

Every where you go on SIUC campus there is GREAT food! Due to SIUC being a diverse campus, you can experience many foods that you have never tried before. That's a great perk! At the same time, there are many restaurants in Carbondale, IL., and in the surrounding area which doesn't take much time to get to.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is fantastic. Though I have not live in the dorms, but I have spent alot of time in them with friends and family. You also can gain many friends that become like brothers and sisters away from home which help aid you in staying on tract and reaching your goals. Dorm life is a very positive aspect of SIUC.

    Academic Rigor

SIUC's Campus is filled with past and present students which remain faithful to its academic growth. SIUC has many students that have gone on to celebrity status that return to visit and donate funds each year to the university. To mention honorable careers, SIUC has successfully graduated an astronaunt, Top 10 basketball coaches, mayors, city council men, singers, athletes, actors/actresses, scholars, and etc. The list goes on!

    Tips for prospective students

Take a look at SIUC's Saluki Net. There you will find a well thought out website. It encompasses all the infomation one needs to know regarding the history and present campus of SIUC.

    In three sentences

SIUC is an excellent University to attend because of their Instructors, students, civil service workers and tuition. This accredited university pursues students with knowledgable information regarding their future career path in mind, helps students see their actual career on paper and then delivers in helping to make that career become a reality. SIUC has a lot to offer in a diverse community setting that opens its campus to nationalities from all over the world which broadens a students communication level of integrity and volunteer outreach beyond ones imagination.

    Campus Safety

There are crimes on campus like stealing or battery every once in while. The crimes or more common in the Tower-style dorms. There are campus police always available, and I do not feel in danger on campus.

    Greek Life

There are only 3 Greek sororities offered at SIUC, but many more fraternities. I was in a Greek sorority for about a month. I would not recommend Greek life to anyone that has any independence whatsoever. Greek organizations are for people that like to follow other people and people that like to boss other people around to make themselves feel better. I did not believe the stereotype before college, but now I know it is true.

    Clubs and Activities

I am not very involved in activities or clubs through SIUC, but I know there are many to be a part of and everyone can find other people that share similar interests through clubs.

Great for these types of students

SIUC is great for people that are into nature for recreation or as a study for a major. There are many state parks around the area and numerous wild life and lakes. The Agriculture program is very good too.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is Unofficial Haloween in Carbondale and Polar Bear. These are holidays were students drink a lot and go to bars and parties all weekend.

    Bang for the buck

SIUC is a rather cheap school compared to other schools, so if you are going to school to get a degree for the least amount of money possible, I think SIUC is a good option. Although I am tired of the rural area of Southern Illinois, I am staying here for three more years of law school because the cost is so much cheaper than other schools of the same value.

    What to do for fun

There are not many options in Carbondale or around the area for fun. The mall in Carbondale is less than impressive. The bar scene is very fun, and I enjoyed it a lot my first year at school. However, now I do not enjoy the bar scene, and there is not really much else to do. SIUC does offer many extra-curricular clubs and activities if you take the time to find them.

    Food and Dining

There are not many options on SIUC campus, but there are many great-tasting and cheap food options around the community of Carbondale.

    Dorm Life

I lived in Thompson Point for my year in the dorms, and it was terrible. I am more biased though because I like to be alone most of the time, and I think it is ridiculous to force adults to live in dorm-style housing as freshmen.

    Academic Rigor

I have not run into extremely hard academics yet at Southern Illinois University, and I am a senior. I graduate in May 2014. Some majors I'm sure are rigorous, but my major, Paralegal Studies, is not rigorous if you try hard. My gen-eds were not hard.

    Tips for prospective students

If your major allows it, ask around about professors and specific classes before signing up for them. Most of the time, what students say about a professor or a class is true, and the professor can make all of the difference.

    In three sentences

Southern Illinois University Carbondale has served its purpose of allowing me to receive a degree quickly. I have not had many negative experiences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The campus is inviting.

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

Security always seems to be present and when called upon respond to the situation well. I have never felt threatened while attending as I walked campus from late night well into the early hours of the morning. Campus itself is very open with the exception of a section of woods that are not recommended to travel at dark hours.

    Bang for the buck

For what the tuition was and the education I received, yes I believe it was worth it. I learned a decent amount to go into a job and be fine tuned to make a career out of it.

    What to do for fun

Bars and clubs, parties, movies, bowling, nature parks/ camping, student recreational facility, and sporting events.

    Food and Dining

Campus dining needs improvement, quantity is there, just not quality. Carbondale offers some food joints that are non-chain and very tasty.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life needs to be updated. The three towers that were built in the 70's just aren't cutting edge anymore. The campus might be seeing some new dormitories to replace the towers, there is something to look forward to.

    Tips for prospective students

For students considering this school, Carbondale is known for its party spirit and any occasion calls for celebration. The faculty and staff are experienced in their respected fields and will work with you if you put forth the effort.

    In three sentences

SIU-Carbondale is a beautiful campus with lots to offer. Aside from being a college town where it seems the majority of students are there to socialize and party, it provides a well rounded education for those students who are determined.

    Clubs and Activities

There's a lot of clubs and activities to do here. There's a certain website you are shown in your UCOL class (University College- a pretty much useless class that you have to take) that lists all the clubs and activities the college has. We also get email updates on what is going on around campus.

    Bang for the buck

All New freshmen are required to live in the dorms for the first year here at Southern. My friends and I did financial calculations and found out it's cheaper to get an apartment the following years instead of living in the dorms. You also don't have to pay insane money for meal plans then.

    Food and Dining

The food here is not the best but not the worst. But there is plenty to choose from. There will also be times where certain food will be served in spirit for what is going on with either the campus or other occasions. A few examples are Homecoming and they even made special cupcakes for the Super Bowl! The only thing that is frustrating is the meal plans. you have to choose them and if you don't use your amount for the week then they don't roll over and basically you lost money. You can cash your meals in at the little stores in the dining hall but it's pretty much a rip-off. Also Trueblood dining hall is open later than Lentz dining hall and that's really disappointing.

    Dorm Life

There are 2 options for dorm life- The Towers and Thompson Point. I live in Thompson Point, which is way more quiet and it's right next to the lake which is gorgeous to look at. Thompson Point is also closer to most of were classes are held, however it's more expensive to live here. The Towers are, from what I hear, loud and obnoxious. I heard there's a lot more conflicts there, probably due to the fact that there are so many floors and multiple towers. Especially when someone decides to pull the fire alarm... Although its more far from everything else on campus, the Rec center is right across the street and is easy to access for a good work out. It's also cheaper to live there. Both have their ups and downs.

    Academic Rigor

If you slacked off during high school, you better change your habits fast. I had 200 level classes my first semester and I was not prepared. We would go through a chapter a day, when in high school we would maybe take a week to go over the information. If you don't take notes, you should start. You should also know how to write fast as well. A teacher I have this semester barely stops for anyone. If you don't write down what you need before she gets to the end of the slide, you're on your own. College is when things get serious.

    In three sentences

Southern Illinois University at Carbondale is a beautiful campus but is know as a party school. If you don't put yourself in that situation, the school is a great place to study and learn. This school also has a lot of resources available to you and that was one reason I decided to attend here.

    Campus Safety

I feel safe on campus and have never had an incident where I felt unsafe while walking across campus. There are definitely areas that students should avoid at night such as the woods on campus but only because these areas are not well lit.

    Greek Life

The Greek life on campus is very small. There are several Fraternities and Sororities on campus but many are more like clubs or they are for certain majors. Greek life and the amount of people who join declined after Greek Row was disbanded and all the Greeks had to move to new houses. Greeks are still an important part of the campus and are involved in many activities on campus. I would recommend Greek life to incoming freshman, but if you don't join your college experience will be just as memorable.

Great for these types of students

-Nature Lovers -Athletes -People who are interested in a small Greek Life -Aviation Majors -Radio/Television Majors

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are secret tunnels that span all across campus. They used to be used by janitorial staff to travel from building to building in bad weather but they are now blocked off and many entrances have bars across where people used to be able to climb down. They look like rectangular storm drains but many are located in the middle of grass patches. These entrances are easy to find and are located all over campus.

    Bang for the buck

I have heard that many students who graduate from SIU have a hard time finding a job. I feel like the tuition for this school is very reasonable but the fees that the school adds on to your bill are outstanding. There are many fees that are added on to student's bills that the student might not even need. One example of this is the fee to use the recreation center. Although many students do take advantage of this facility they must pay additional fees to take classes or get a trainer. Another example is the health insurance fee through the school. I have health insurance through another company so I do not understand why I need it through the school also.

    What to do for fun

There are many opportunities for activities on the campus and in the surrounding area. On campus, students can get involved in clubs, groups, or teams of many different types. Off campus, students can travel to one of the forests to hike the trails or go to one of the many lakes around Carbondale and enjoy swimming or other aquatic activities.

    Food and Dining

The first three weeks of the school year are the best times for the dining halls. After this time they start recycling the menu. Every once in a while there will be a very good meal, but the typical meal is just average. The school has recently been trying to improve the dining halls by offering a late night menu and many new made-to-order options.

    Dorm Life

I live in the towers (Schneider Hall) which houses hundreds of students. In this environment it is often loud throughout the night and during days. The RA's do travel from floor to floor to make sure nothing too distracting is happening but students often learn the times they come and avoid being loud at these times. Another inconvenience is that there are no security cameras in the hallways. This has allowed many fire alarms to be pulled at all times during the night, this has become a trend in all three towers during the 2013-2014 school year.

    Academic Rigor

I am currently enrolled in undergrad classes which are mostly taught by graduate students. The undergrad courses I have attended have been extremely easy. I have not even purchased the requred texts for the courses because they are usually not even used more than a couple times throughout the semester.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Do not sign the 2 year edge housing contract unless you are absolutely sure that you want to live in the dorms and pay for the meal plan for 2 full years. 2. Get involved in campus activities and surround yourself with people who share your interests. 3. Do not come to Carbondale expecting it to be a huge party school. This is an old reputation and will fall short of your expectations. College is what you make of it.

    In three sentences

Southern Illinois University Carbondale has an amazing and beautiful campus. The school is very nice with many renovated buildings. The students here represent many different cultures and lifestyles.

    What to do for fun

On Tuesdays they have karaoke night at Hangar 9 and on thursday it's dollar night at calli's. Besides that there's nothing really fun to do here in Carbondale aside from going to the bars, the mall, and Giant City. However Giant City requires a bit of a drive so if you don't have a car it's going to be tough to get there.

    Food and Dining

The food for the most part is crap. Some day's it's actually good, but that's every blue moon. After I eat the dining hall food it usually upsets my stomach and makes me feel sick for the most part.

    Dorm Life

If you're staying in Thompson Point then it should be relatively quiet and peaceful. If you stay in the towers expect a lot of noise, obnoxious people, and rude student pulling the fire alarm because they think it's funny.

    Academic Rigor

Certain classes are better than others. It really depends on what teacher you get. Some teachers give you that individual attention, others could care less and sadly you suffer for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Research the classes that pertain to your degree. Make sure you get in contact with those teachers and if possible ask for the syllabus for their class. Make sure you know exactly what classes your'e signing up for and that the class isn't something completely different from what you expecting.

    In three sentences

The atmosphere of the school is very good. Certain teachers do their job well and take interest int heir students fully. However, the Radio/Television classes aren't up to par with the rest of the Mass Communications department.

    Dorm Life

As a Resident Assistant for 3 years, and a Resident for 1 years, Residence Hall Life has been quite an undertaking with changes happening each year. Living Learning Communities are a must for potential applicants and help network very quickly in the environment that you live in and could help you make life long friends in your field. Residence Hall Life has also started on becoming more inclusive to the LGBTQ community and will have a Pride floor starting in Fall 2014 for potential students who are allies or identify.

    Academic Rigor

Academically this collegiate opportunity has not been difficult as long as you apply yourself. If you come to party, drink and be unsafe then that's what you'll get out of it. If you apply yourself there are many opportunities for growth both intellectually and as a person

    Tips for prospective students

-get involved on campus and make the most of your college experience -have fun, just make sure to keep up with studies -talk to your teachers, they will be the ones helping you get into your field -network with individuals around you, you never know where someone will be down the line

    In three sentences

Southern Illinois University is no longer the heavy drinking/partying college of the 1970's and has grown into a prospective university growing each and every year. Currently there are multiple ideals changing on the campus involving inclusivity, financial aid and student leadership. Organizations are adopting these ideals quickly to become available to all students with different cultural, sexual and other types of backgrounds

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Polar Bear and Unofficial Halloween get a little crazy, but if you are into partying, these events are for you!

    Bang for the buck

SIUC's tuition is very affordable -- especially for the quality of education!

    What to do for fun

There is a mall in Carbondale, as well as a beach and fishing/canoeing capabilities on campus.

    Food and Dining

There are a lot of franchise restaurants in the area, but they are typically too expensive to afford for a college student.

    Dorm Life

From what I have heard, the dorms are loud and uncomfortable. I chose to live off-campus, where I still had the ability to have room-mate matching, without the headaches of freshman, supervision, and trouble.

    Academic Rigor

I had to write an eleven page paper for one of my psychology courses, and a four page paper for another (both 300-level). The academic rigor depends on the instructor and whether they are a graduate student or a tenured professor.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to Morris Library for studying, as dorms and apartments can be distracting. Take advantage of teacher's office hours; they are there to help you. Explore community events like the DuQuoin State Fair.

    In three sentences

The campus is breath-taking. The psychology faculty are experts in their field. Off-campus housing is very affordable.

    Clubs and Activities

The are a lot of clubs aimed at bringing students together like work-out and fitness clubs and classes, and clubs based on games or shows. There are also volunteer and community service oriented clubs and organizations. Lastly, there are clubs that are built specifically for one's major. The members of these clubs help each other with our academic goals and aspirations on a daily basis.

Great for these types of students

Students who like to appreciate nature and the outdoors would love this campus. There is a beautiful scenery including a beautiful lake and much space to just enjoy lying down in the grass once in a while.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

On campus near Lawson Hall, there is a series of rocks in a circle that someone used for some sort of art project. The rocks have beautiful designs.

    What to do for fun

There is a bowling alley and laser tag room at the student center, with bi-weekly movies playing there as well. There is disc-golf equipment set up on Thompson point and parties go on almost every weekend.

    Food and Dining

You get to have a meal plan rather that paying cash every day. Additionally, this upcoming year, the dining plan will be all you can eat at any time of the day from 8 I believe, to 11 at night! However, the variety of different foods gets a little limited. They have specials, but on special occasion.

    Dorm Life

The people you meet will be your friends for life because they'll most likely be kind and fun people. The space in your room is average compared to other universities. There are schools with bigger rooms, and ones with smaller rooms. But your RA will create events that everyone can enjoy.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers try to prepare you for actual real world work. I know as an engineer, I have my work cut out for me, and the teachers are pushing me to get there. Doing work and studying gets very independent, and you really have to work hard on your own sometimes.

    Tips for prospective students

It's important for students to actually do their homework. If you want to make it in the real world, you're going to have to know how to work hard, and doing well here is the first step. I advise you to make as many friends and study-buddies freshman year, but remember to enjoy all of your years at this university.

    In three sentences

I think that this university is a great place to have experiences that test your independence and resourcefulness. The people you meet here are great and filled with big hearts; you'll rarely be bored because you'll have a vibrant social life. The campus cafeteria could use a little variety, but for the most part, services and provided and the campus facilities are satisfactory.
