Great for these types of students

Hard working yet relaxed, fairly academic

    Tips for prospective students

Classes are challenging, but some are really easy so decide what you want to feel like during the school year

    Bang for the buck

Though the meal plan and housing seems really expensive, I feel like I am getting a quality education.

    Am enjoying being here

The residential life is amazing. There are frequent and a variety of programs. For example, on St. Patrick's day there was a non-alcoholic pub crawl between the buildings and once there was a program where each building represented a different era of time. The RAs are really nice and helpful, but it is really easy to get caught doing anything because the dorms are compact. Also, I like the size since i recognize people in my classes, but at the same time there are always new people to meet.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers are really helpful and most are really good about getting papers or tests backs quickly. I feel pretty challenged, but never really overloaded. Most professors are really good about dealing with special circumatances.

Everyone! Whether you're a sports nut, brainiac, theater kid, band president or just the average Joe, you'll find something to love at SOU.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply and take a few trips down to Ashland. You'll fall in love not only with the campus, but with the whole town. There's so many exciting things in Ashland. The food is great too!

    Bang for the buck

At first glance, the costs might seem a bit too heavy. But the school is so helpful when it comes to applying for aid and scholarships. Not only do they help you figure out how to get money, they show you how to use it and pay it back.

    Am enjoying being here

There are so many clubs and fun organizations to join! Plus, the sports teams are really welcoming and fun. There is something to do for everyone here.

    Am learning a lot

My Professors are really experienced and actually know what they're talking about. They are goofy and fun and not strict and grumpy like most colleges. I've learned more here in one semester than in my senior year of high school!

Great for these types of students

The academic advisors and departments really bent over backward to help me. I wanted to create my own major via the indersdisciplinary studies major, a relatively new program at SOU. Even though many didn't even know we had such a program, they took time out of their busy schedules to meet with me, discuss what courses I needed for my self-designed major, and the steps necessary to apply for the program and graduate with all my bases covered. If you're looking for a university with faculty & staff willing to do whatever it takes to see your dreams come to life, then SOU is the place for you

    Tips for prospective students

Apply EARLY, and find all the financial aid you can. It becomes a lot more difficult in later years. If you know what you want to major in already, look into SOU's Accelerated Baccalaureate Program. If you're accepted, ABP lets you graduate in three years instead of four, which is a HUGE money saver.

    Bang for the buck

To be honest, when I started visiting colleges my senior year SOU was on the bottom of my list. I went to private schools all my life, and I couldn't imagine public colleges being able to compare to their private counterparts. And for the most part, I was proven right. But when I first visited SOU, I was amazed. It was just as good as the other colleges that I visited, and in most ways surpassed the others. SOU has so much to offer, and at a fraction of what similar private schools demand. After a two-day visit, I knew where I wanted to go. The price difference just happened to be a bonus.

    Am enjoying being here

Ashland, OR is a one-of-a-kind type of place. It may be a small town, but there's always something to do and awesome people to do things with. On campus, there are countless clubs, organisations, and events to get involved with. Ashland's world renown Shakespeare Festival gives it just enough tourist appeal for all kinds of shops, restauraunts, movie theaters, etc all within walking distance. Pure, unadulterated nature is our backyard, with presents no end of outdoor adventures. And the school itself is so open and inviting that you can't help but feel at home. The faculty, staff, and students here are unique and friendly. You make friends easily from all ages walks of life. The friends I've made here are people I will keep in touch with for the rest of my life.

    Am learning a lot

At SOU, I have been able to make my terms as easy or as difficult as I need them to be. The honors program is superb; most majors have an honors program, but if yours doesn't you can graduate with university honors. If you're struggling, there are free tutor centers throughout campus and most classes have a Pass/No Pass option.

Love theater? SOU is for you. Wanna be in the medical field? SOU has a great program. They are working with OHSU. Wanna start your own business? The small business program, as well as all the other ones offered are really helpful.

    Tips for prospective students

Come for a visit :) Even if SOU isn't in your top 10... You never know, you may fit right in..

    Bang for the buck

While the room and board seems to be a little spendy, the education is well worth its price.

    Am enjoying being here

I am surrounded by the nicest people. The students are all very friendly and the faculty makes me feel at ease in the classroom. I love that I can walk through my dorm and say hi to almost everyone.

    Am learning a lot

I am mostly enrolled in business courses this term, but they are very informative. I am so glad that I am taking them. The professors here are so nice and friendly. They are very open and willing to discuss a variety of things with me that aren't even about schoolwork!

If you are looking for a college that celebrates differences and diversity then Southern Oregon University is the place for you. It is a chill environment with great people that are ready to work alongside you in order to help you achieve your goals.

    Tips for prospective students

At any college hard work and dedication are going to be a must. At Southern Oregon University you have people ready and willing to help you reach your goals. Be it teachers, counselors, or students there are people wanting to help you succeed. Accept the help and truly get involved with the people who are apart of your college life. You won't regret it.

    Bang for the buck

When I transferred to Southern Oregon University it was not the only school I looked at by far. I am paying my own way through college and because of that I had to find the school that would be the most bang for my buck. Honestly, Southern Oregon University is a good price for a great education.

    Am enjoying being here

I am a transfer student at Southern Oregon University and there is two big reasons why: their business department is amazing and the people are honestly happy to meet you. The teachers know what they are talking about because they are currently working (or have worked for many years) in the filed they are teaching. The teachers love what they do and it is a contagious feeling. The environment is an amazing one to say the least. The multicultural center is such an interesting and diverse place to learn about other people and yourself.

    Academic Rigor

I am in my third year at Southern Oregon University and have yet to feel stagnate in my studies. Each year I continue to grow in my academics and sometimes even surprise myself. Being in school for four years is a long time but constantly learning new and exciting things at SOU makes the time fly by.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for people who enjoy smaller towns and atmospheres. The town has a unique character to it and is a sight for many tourists, especially during the Shakespeare festival. Those who love acting and plays will find it desirable.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to do your work! Practice time management and constantly write down due dates and test dates in a planner or on your computer. Frequently check your email and mysou accounts. Also, work hard. Hard work pays off, but don't be afraid to have a little fun.

    Bang for the buck

Everything about this school is worth every penny. The students, professors, climate, town, and campus make the experience unforgettable.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoy Southern Oregon University! Not only is the campus beautiful, but it is set in an amazing town. Ashland, Oregon has an amazing park downtown and each store presents its own character (not to mention great food). I love the weather here as well! Unlike weather conditions in my home town, Ashland presents beautiful seasons. The professors are very helpful, the students are friendly, and the atmosphere is warm and cozy.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently a pre-nursing student and I couldn't be more happy with my current learning situation. I mean Wow. At the moment it is Spring term, but when I look back to Fall term I feel like my brain contained a lot less then than it does now. The professors are VERY helpful and all want you to succeed. They are always around to ask questions and help immensely during the learning process. I am learning so much and know I will be prepared for Nursing school when the time comes.

Great for these types of students

Self-motivated; prefers smaller classes; enjoys being a part of a tight knit major oriented group.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep track of what requirements your credits fill. It can get really confusing if you don't stay on top of it. Also get close to your advisor(s) and work hard. Also, make friends everywhere and offer to volunteer for things. I volunteered one time and it lead me to a job!

    Bang for the buck

Food plans are RIDICULOUS. The quality of the food is very poor, with slow improvements. Very overpriced for what you get. Depending on when my classes got out my freshman year, there also wasn't a lot of food options. I could spend the flat rate of around $10 for a slice of pizza and some burnt almost-a-hamburger. If you can, get into the Madrone complex. It has a kitchen and you can just get the Madrone food plan, so that you can just make your own meals. Its very worth it. The less you eat in Cascade (the cafeteria) the better. Elmos (the lunch food court) is a fair bit better, but only operates for a few hours. Everything else is fair.

    Am enjoying being here

Campus is great! Beautiful, relaxing, and with a fair amount of stuff to do. If you don't find something you like, its fairly easy to make it yourself!

    Am learning a lot

You get out what you put into your education. If you put effort into your studies, SOU has the resources to help you succeed. The professors are very good and eager to help, as well as everyone else on campus.

Great for these types of students

Any type of student will fit into the SOU lifestyle. It's a friendly and welcoming environment, as well as being in the breathtaking hills of the Rogue Valley.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! Find something you've never tried and do it. Join a club and go to school events! You don't need Greek Life at a university to have a great time. This isn't high school anymore! You are paying for your classes and you should utilize every moment you're in them. Take notes, read the books/textbooks, use the library, and ask your professors questions!

    Bang for the buck

Southern Oregon University is a fairly small school and because of this, the teacher to student ratio allows for smaller classes and more one on one time. My average class was about 21 students and I never struggled to get help from a professor, if needed. Unlike larger schools with classes of 250-350 students, you are not just a number at SOU. I am using every ounce of my tuition dollars to participate in the numerous events, social and academic, as well as utilizing the many resources on campus.

    Am enjoying being here

SOU is now my second home. When I left I missed it immediately. There are so many clubs and activities that there is never a dull moment. My professors have been very helpful and some quite entertaining!

    Am learning a lot

I am learning TONS! Of course, it depends on your professor and if you're actually interested in the class, but for the most part I've had wonderful classes. But, you learn so much more than the topic of the class. You learn about what's happening in the world, what's happening locally, and you learn so much more about yourself.

    Campus Safety

very low crime area. not that many reported. nice and secure.

Great for these types of students

quiet, studious, determined, active, and an academic strider.

    Bang for the buck

i'd say with the great education that i've heard about, the 30k to be there is well worth the money.

    What to do for fun

when i was there, i really enjoyed the rock climbing walls, which is secluded within the building with the gymnasium. inside, it stays warm and you never seem to get bored.

    Food and Dining

the dining areas are sophisticated. i really like the food courts and the different varieties of edibles.

    Dorm Life

the beds are comfy and the rooms are pretty cozy. it is also a great working environment, however, in some of the dorms like at cox hall, the walls are very thin and if you like to go to bed earlier than your neighbor, you will hear them until either of you fall asleep.

    Academic Rigor

i am rating this based off of the preview weekend. so far, so good.

    Tips for prospective students

this is a school for those who love the sunshine, like a rural community, and does not like the bustling of the urban areas. peaceful and quiet.

    In three sentences

i have attended the preview weekend and the campus is especially nice. people-students and staff-are extremely kind and helpful. the food is really wonderful as are the dorms.

    Campus Safety

I always feel very safe on campus, there are many campus police officers that walk around.

    Greek Life

    Their are no sororities/fraternities.

    Clubs and Activities

Their are lots of clubs and activities students can partake in if they want to, that are all fun and fulfilling and students can gain great friendships from these experiences.

Great for these types of students

Southern Oregon University is great for students who crave a full rounded college experience, a person who doesn't only live and breathe their studies, but a person who can be an independent learner and a seeker of information and has the skills to apply it to all aspects of life.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Their is a pancake feed before finals week every term, where there is a raffle, breakfast and karaoke which is always fun. There are also tons of great performances throughout the year like musicals, a luau, an international week with a dance performance, a powwow, SOAR (which showcases talents of students like their artwork and academic research).

    Bang for the buck

Compared to other Public liberal Arts Universities it is rather inexpensive, and as I said, you as a student have the ability to make it as interactive as you'd like. Meaning that you can take away a bacholars degree with minimal effort and mediocre grades, yet you can also be really involved and gain connections that can help you find careers and long lasting opportunities.

    What to do for fun

SOU campus has many opportunities for students to stay actively involved in school events like sports games, clubs, plays, and dances. It's especially easy to have access and knowledge about the school events when you are living in the dorms. Ashland itself is a great town with wonderful surrounding nature to hike, go rafting, and mountain biking. Their are great coffee shops and restaurants, and I also find going to the hot springs, taking dance classes, walking around Lithia Park and different community events like farmers markets and artists fairs to be especially great to attend. Ashland is known for the Shakespeare festival, so if you enjoy plays or musicals what so ever, you will always find something fun to see.

    Food and Dining

The food on campus is mediocre in my opinion, they are getting better about locally grown healthy food, however the food isn't my favorite as I grew up loving to cook healthy organic food for myself I'm spoiled in that sense, yet their are still options that gave me the ability to eat there at least once a day for the school year.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is another aspect of college in which you create your own experience and how interactive you'd like it to be. It can be a place where you sleep and study. Yet it can also be a place where you can be creative and be part of dorm-wide activities and create long lasting friendships. Some floors of the dorms have themes so if you are interested in the outdoors for instance, you can live on a floor where everyone else in interested in the same.

    Academic Rigor

The unique characteristic of Southern Oregon University is the high acceptance rate; to many, it would be assumed that courses are easy because of this fact. However, as a student that attends SOU I am proud to admit that a common misconception about this school is that doesn't take very much effort to succeed in classes. In reality, because the school is in such a desirable location, many of the professors are extremely qualified and really push their students. In addition to that, SOU is a product of your individual learning habits and skills. A student does have the ability to mediocrely succeed by going through the motions of school yet won't see the long term benefits. Yet a person who applies all they learn and really lives and breathes in the academia can have a very fulfilled and rigorous career in school. What makes SOU unique is the student has the ability to choose how they want to learn and succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

As a prospective student, make sure Southern Oregon University has a handful of majors that you could potentially find to fit in your career/ educational interests. According to uoregon.edu, the average number of times a student changes their major is three. In addition, make sure you are willing to set personal educational goals. Many students straight out of high school treat college as a continuation of high school and do the bare minimum, which is a possible method at Southern Oregon University, yet as your classes become more rigorous and professors expect more from you as the years go by, it's important to develop good habits from the beginning. In addition to that idea, your schooldays are simply more fulfilling if you go to classes everyday and feel proud of what you have completed and taken away from each course to apply to other classes and other parts of your life.

    In three sentences

Southern Oregon University is a college I highly recommend because as a student attending SOU, one has the ability to create the type of educational lifestyle of their choice. If a student wants to be extremely involved in team sports, school events, clubs, and leadership they have the ability to succeed greatly. Alternately, one may choose to have an lifestyle outside of the campus environment and attend SOU to strictly reach their educational goals.

Like many universities, there are several financial aid and scholarship options for incoming students - which are incredibly helpful due to the costs of tuition and boarding (plus everything else). As with many schools, where you live really helps with cost, but take every chance you can to help save money.

    Will enjoy being here

The campus is beautiful; with art projects, status, and areas set up everywhere. There are also double-decker bike racks for students to keep their bikes between classes (everyone rides between buildings) and trees line the paths. The community is a tightly knit one, so in coming students will always manage to find a friend quickly and have support wherever they are.

    Will learn a lot

I am applying for SOU as we speak, and just toured there this weekend! There are so many opportunities here for students in any category of study. Not only will you learn everything you need to in your specific track, you'll also have plenty of chances to learn about other things as well!

    Campus Safety

ashland feels like a really really safe town and the campus feels even safer. in michigan in the city it was normal to have your car or house broken into, but i have never heard of that happening here. the campus is safe in terms of bullying too, i have never heard any derogatory or rude things said while i was around at sou.

Great for these types of students

great for students who are self-motivated and care about the environment, community, and the future of our planet. sou is a very environmentally conscience school because of the staff and the students. sou is great too for people who love hiking or just being outside. it is sunny almost every day and southern oregon is full of incredible outdoor places to visit.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

many people bike and longboard through campus, the student paths are wide and open so it's not dangerous. there are a lot of big parking lots that, after school hours, are totally open and perfect for longboarding.

    Bang for the buck

sou is very well priced. as an oregon resident now i pay just slightly more than i did for community college in michigan when i was a resident there. i wouldn't be able to afford college at most universities in the us, but sou is completely affordable and it's a great school.

    What to do for fun

there are many events going on all of the time on campus. free movies to watch, lectures, student groups and organizations have meetings often, and there are many opportunities for sports or outdoor activities. i love reading and the sou library is amazing.

    Food and Dining

there are a few very nice little cafes on campus to get a cup of coffee or a snack. since the campus is small, nothing is far and it is right in town so you can quickly walk to any restaurants or stores in town.

    Dorm Life

i do not live in a dorm so i'm not sure!

    Academic Rigor

i am just a freshman so i cannot say how more major-oriented classes will be, but right now i feel my classes and teachers are pretty laid-back. i have to have everything turned in on time and i am graded on showing up to class and participating. however, if i have a legitimate reason for missing a class all of my teachers have been understanding and allowed me to turn in assignments online or reschedule exams.

    Tips for prospective students

be prepared before classes start. don't wait until the last minute to buy books or supplies. if you want to get the most out of a class read a bit of your textbooks before you're required to. show up on time and awake!

    In three sentences

They all love what they do and that has a big difference, i have been to schools where the teachers seem almost as bored as the students and that was not a good learning experience for me, but here at SOU i have never had a boring teacher.

    What to do for fun

There is a lot a things to do for fun, I have been taking dance classes, and go to plays and people watch, there is a down town area with a lot of neat shops and since it is a theater town there is always someone playing guitar or the flute or singing down there, some nights there are fire jugglers and for those over 21 there are a few neat bars, as well as a few vinyards and lots of wine tasting and such. For normal shopping the city of Medford is only 10 miles away and there are lots of things to do there also.

    What to do for fun

Ashland offers much opportunity for fun on days off. On beautiful days, my friends and I would walk 20 minutes and window shop downtown, then take a turn into Lithia Park and picnic. In the winter, if you aren't building a snowman on the lawn, you could drive up and ride Mt. Ashland. There's always crazy dorm games brewing on rainy days, usually made up by the RA's. No doubt the classics suffice; board games, card games, and of course video games. Personally, I was able to explore my interest in painting during my free time, everyone appreciates when one discovers a hidden talent! Ashland has such a welcoming, open-minded vibe, there's an abundance of things to do for fun!

    Food and Dining

I must say it was quite a step up from high school cafeteria food, no doubt. The different foods daily were really nice, being that I'm vegetarian it was nice to have options. The one thing I struggled with was prices were out the roof, but I suppose that's why they call us poor college students!

    Dorm Life

I personally struggled with the amount they were asking to live in the residence. My parents don't put a dime into my education, and I didn't achieve many scholarships my senior year of high school, so I have to pay for my schooling by myself. I wished it had been a few thousand cheaper, I had to work full time a couple months to make ends meet, and I felt that was something I shouldn't have to stress about especially as a young freshman. But I learned a lot from it. I can't complain about the dorms social life though, I had a blast!

    Academic Rigor

I felt challenged to the perfect amount. Each course is different in it's own degree but over-all I really felt like I got out what I put in, but was pushed enough to care, but not so much that I was overwhelmed.

    Tips for prospective students

If you feel at home in smaller communities, yet want the opportunities and adventure the great outdoors holds, SOU is a place to look a bit closer at. Being a liberal arts school, Southern holds a great variety of majors exciting and unique in their own ways. What I quickly loved about it's quaint size, was I didn't feel lost and overwhelmed when I first came my freshman year. I was able to have questions asked and needs met from professors and staff, with more one on one aid. Not to mention the place is gorgeous and everyone there is full of welcoming smiles!

If you do feel a bit uneasy you can always call on Campus Security to escort you where you need to go.

Great for these types of students

SOU and Ashland is a great place to go for students interested in the Arts. That's what brought me to the school. It's a small college town that is pretty laid back and is surrounded by beauty.

    What to do for fun

There are so many ways to find fun. There are planned activities through the University as well as different types of groups to get involved in depending on what your interests are. Also being a small college town there are things to do and places to go outside of school and of course the very popular annual Shakespearian Festival. OSU does not have Fraternity or Sorority if this is something that is important to you in choosing a school..

    Food and Dining

Cafeteria style food is cafeteria style food. It's definitely not home cooking, but it will do the job.

    Dorm Life

I'm no longer in a Dorm, but I was in a Dorm my Freshman year and I made some great friends that I'm still close with today.

    Academic Rigor

The classes I've taken so far have been challenging and rewarding.

    Tips for prospective students

Communication! Speak up whether it be your struggling in some classes, you're not sure what you want to do or even if you're feeling a bit down and need someone to talk to, or even letting the people around you know of exciting achievements you've made or opportunities that you've come and people always love to hear when you think they're doing a great job.

    In three sentences

My experience at SOU has been great. I have found the Professors, Student Services Counselors to be caring and helpful. The Professors will take the time to help you outside of class and give you direction of other places you can get some extra help. Student Services has been great in helping if you become unsure of what you're majoring in and help you figure out where you want to go with your degree and what will ultimately make you happy in your career choice.

    What to do for fun

If you like the outdoors there is: snowboarding or skiing, going to the lake, sand volleyball, going to the park, riding bikes, walking around downtown, etc. If you are more of a book worm there are plenty of clubs and organizations to join or create, theatre, etc.

    Food and Dining

Dining hall food is pretty good. The SU has a great variety of foods, coffee shop and the book store.

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

The class sizes at Southern are a bit smaller but I think it is great to have small class sizes because it gives you more opportunities for one-on- one help.

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is very high. There hasn't been any instances where people are bullied. Everyone is accepted for who they are. Rather it be a certain type of race or sexuality, everyone is friendly here.

    Clubs and Activities

There are way too many clubs and activities to do on campus to actually list. But if you love a certain thing, there is mostly likely a club for it on campus.

    Bang for the buck

You can get pretty awesome deals if you know the right place to go. Try going to the mall in Medford and look around and see what you might find.

    What to do for fun

Going downtown is always fun with a couple of buddies. Just walking around Lethia park and going through the little shops is neat.

    Food and Dining

Well the food at first is good. But you will start to notice that a lot of the stuff is served every time. Going to the SU to eat is better but try not to spend all of your flex points. Stretch them out and make them last.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is not that bad. As long as you get a long with your roommate things are pretty sweet. If you live in a single dorm, try to get to know the people in your hall. Its good to have a buddy or two.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are pretty hard. You need to really pay a lot of attention to lectures. Take really good notes, and take advantage of the professors office hours when you can. Don't be afraid to email your professor you have any questions.

    Tips for prospective students

You should get in touch with your roommate if you know you will have one. Ask each other who is going to bring what to the dorm. Wouldn't make much sense for the two of you to bring the same thing. It takes up way too much space. Keep in mind that the dorms are not that big.

    In three sentences

If you are looking to attend SOU, then know that you should look up the classes you plan on taking in detail. Make sure you know how much the materials you will need are, and how much is your budget. Also, plan ahead on how you will pay off your fees.

Students who have bad legs or unconscious about their legs, going to SOu is the right place to go because the classes are close together but it's what you call on a moutain. So it's soft off slanted. so everytime you walk up to the science building, It's always a work-out. SOU as I've heard has the best Science Program/ Classes to take! So they keep you busy.

    Dorm Life

The dorms as I have heard is really nice, having free food and etc.. The university has been there before the time of our grandparents which is why it's a benefit for those who live in oregon, because to keep out the dust, you keep the window open to replace dusty air with spring grass air.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on a person. A person who loves to read may have a different perspective on the difficulty academically. I, coming from the islands have only one issue, that issue is comprehension. It's really difficult for me to comprehend text books and It really takes up a lot of my time than most of the kids, but I'm always trying my best. Sometimes my best isn't good enough but it's a good Kick-in-the-butt motivation. So it's not so hard, but it can be.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't attend college with the high school mentality. It was the worst mistake I've ever had to repeat, struggling to pay up the consequences, It's better off to start the school year and continue the rest of the year with goals and motivation. Do your assignments the day it was assigned, and be on top of home works and tests.

There is on-campus security that are there when you need them but not in your face all the time. They can be called any time, day or night. The students themselves are always there to help and protect each other. In my year here I have not seen any problems or heard of any instances of disturbance.

    Clubs and Activities

There are lots of clubs here and opportunities for new ones. We love thinking outside the box.

Great for these types of students

SOU is a great school for students that like the country style of living. It's a beautiful campus nestled in the mountains. The students and instructors are friendly and helpful. The classes are small and structured for lots of attention to the student. Life here is at a relaxed pace but structured for success.

    What to do for fun

SOU has on campus museums and clubs. The city of Ashland has a huge art community that includes friday art walks where you can enjoy the galleries of the city free of charge. There is also The Science Works that teaches children about science but is also great fun for adults. There is also camping, swimming, picnicing, horseback riding and lots of other fun activities. If a student has a car there are lots of great places to see and explore not far from campus. If a student doesn't have a car there are student bikes available and lots to do in town.

    Food and Dining

The barista's and food joints are great. There are lot's of options; burgers, pizza, calzones, sushi, salads, sandwiches, stir fry, low cal and vegetarian. Students serve in the food court and they are fun and easy going. the food is fresh and tastes delicious!

    Dorm Life

I am a non-traditional student and live off campus. I have not been inside any of the dorms. Other students seem to really enjoy the dorms and tell of a great camaraderie that develops over the term. The new dorms should be done being built this fall, 2013. They look wonderful.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are structured in a way to help the student achieve success. There is homework but you're not smothered in it. Even with taking 16 credits one term i was still able to complete my assignments and still have some free time. all of the homework is directly related to what is being studied and not a lot of fluff.

    Tips for prospective students

Attend the Preview and orientation. It is great fun and very informative. You get a tour of the campus structured towards your degree. You also get some one on one time with other students and a great lunch.

    In three sentences

SOU is a beautiful college with great people. The students are all really nice and helpful. The instructors are knowledgeable and eager to help each student succeed.

Active campus safety officers, drive around campus 24/7 and are a constant, non threatening, comforting presence.

    Greek Life

Does not exist except for national honors societies.

    Clubs and Activities

Lots f choices, there is a club fair at least once a term, though the fall term one is the largest.

Great for these types of students

Students who don't really care too much about partying or having a big town environment.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Suzy (Suzanne Homes), one of the dorms, has a tree out front that many graduating students throw a pair of shoes into at the end of their last term. The shoe tree is really fun to watch as old shoes fall off, new shoes are added, and as leaves, flowers, and snow decorate the tree.

    What to do for fun

Ashland is a small town, but there are often activities on campus. The music and theatre departments have performances that are free to students.

    Food and Dining

Dining facilities are clean, and have good prices. The options are often fat and carb heavy, especially for vegetarians, but there is also a salad bar available at nearly all meals. Two on campus coffee shops, as well as a second dining facility in the student union, though it does not use the meal swipes as the facility in the dorm complex.

    Dorm Life

The new dorm facilities are opening this coming term, but the experience I had in the Madrone complex for my first two years was OK. Very little hall-wide or complex-wide activities. Fairly good noise barriers between rooms, and relatively clean and bright facilities.

    Academic Rigor

Good choice of majors, lots of other options for minors too! I love that most professors have you call them by their first name, and often make themselves very accessible for unofficial advising, questions, and even one-on-one tutoring.

    Tips for prospective students

Its not a real party school, and most places in Ashland close around or before 10 pm. Great town, but very little night life.

    In three sentences

One of the best choices I have made in my entire life. I fit in amazingly well at this school, as could most any person. Good academics, OK housing facilities (brand new facility opening Fall 13) and a welcoming community.

    Campus Safety

There is a blue light system throughout campus. And the campus security is always on call for emergencies or simply escorting students from the library to their dorms late at night.

    Clubs and Activities

To list just a few: Bowling club, Cosplay club, Paranormal club, Ballroom Dancing club.

Great for these types of students

If you're in to art, English, drama, or are generally an artsy kind of person, come here. When people ask me to describe Ashland, I always say, Picture every drama and literary geek in Oregon. Now shove them all in to one town and tell them to make the town as artsy as they are.

    Bang for the buck

You get everything and more. In addition to a top notch academic experience, you get an unparalleled campus experience and Ashland is one of the greatest towns in the world to live in! P.S. if you're in to photography, bring a camera. The campus turns into a kaleidoscope during the fall.

    What to do for fun

There's always something going on around campus so if you wanted, you would never have to leave campus. But if you want to see a movie, there are two in town and one of them is only a few minutes walk from campus. Downtown Ashland is home to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival with plays (both Shakespeare and others) showing most of the year. Downtown is also a great place for shopping and everything can be found there from clothes, to books, to vinyl records, to all things nerdy. Ashland also has several nearby hiking trails and has a wide variety of outdoor activities available.

    Food and Dining

New dining halls were just put in this year and all o the food is great! It's cooked right there in the dining hall fresh every day and there's several different options to choose from. In one room, you have a burger place, stir-fry, pizza and pasta, salad, sandwiches, dessert, and several different shops around campus where you can buy food as well. I've taken to having breakfast at the library coffee shop.

    Dorm Life

I haven't one person I haven't liked! It's so easy to meet people here and everyone is really friendly! I live in Shasta which is a newer dorm building and I couldn't have asked for a better room or roommate! There are always a ton of campus wide events going on and most of them are free for students to attend. Since arriving here four weeks ago, I've been to a comedian's routine, a mentalist act, a poetry reading, several receptions for guest speakers, a casino night, a movie night showing The Great Gatsby, entered a pumpkin carving contest, and signed up for a week long game of humans vs. zombies.

    Academic Rigor

I'm challenged in every class but at the same time, I know I'm right at the level I need to be. All of the professors I have are really good at getting students involved in class and helping them out. You have to pay attention to do well in class but you can still have a life outside of the classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Applying any AP or college credits you have can really help you get around some general education requirements. Having a laptop or some other personal access to the internet can be very helpful because some classes assign homework or post notes online. Shasta and McLaughlin are the names of the new dorm buildings and I recommend trying to get a room there because the rooms are bigger than Greensprings and the bathrooms aren't communal. And though a car is nice to have, it's not vital that you have one because downtown Ashland and other shopping areas are within walking distance of the campus.

    In three sentences

The campus is gorgeous; the people are amazing and I don't even have to try to make friends; all of the professors I've met really trust their students and talk to us like equals; I'm never bored because there's always something going on around campus; and I've had more freedom with choosing cases than I have anywhere else! I was nervous about starting college just like everyone else. But by the end of the first week, I decided that I couldn't imagine myself being anywhere else!

There's tons to do in downtown Ashland. The local shops cater to a variety of interests. Also, the bigger city of Medford is only 20 minutes away.

    Food and Dining

The new facilities have greatly improved the dining experiences over past years.

    Dorm Life

Expensive but fantastic. The housing staff are wonderful and the RAs create a great sense of community.

    Academic Rigor

The classes can be difficult but they are very rewarding if you put in the effort.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure your intended plans won't be affected by retrenchment and budget cuts.

    In three sentences

The professors are great teachers and very helpful. The programs are fantastic. The only downside is the programs being lost in retrenchment.

    Campus Safety

Ashland is a small town with little crime. The campus feels very safe. In addition, campus security is really friendly and willing to come walk you to your car or dorm if you feel nervous. They come very quickly when called.

Great for these types of students

Southern Oregon University is rated one of the best schools for queer identified students. LGBTQ students enjoy a vibrant community center with many events throughout the year.

    What to do for fun

Ashland is situated in the Rogue Valley, which is surrounded by the beautiful Siskiyou mountains. Right from campus you can go hiking, mountain-biking, snowboarding and more. There are a lot of clubs on campus that are very active so it is easy to find people that want to do the same things as you.

    Food and Dining

The food is quite decent! And cheap. The student union has many options. I often eat there for lunch for under $5.

    Dorm Life

I did not live in the dorms so cannot comment. It seems like people have fun there though. They are making me write another sentence.

    Academic Rigor

I feel challenged in my classes, but it is a bit of a mixed bag. It of course depends on what teacher you have. You get out what you put in.

    Tips for prospective students

Enrollment services and advising often make mistakes. Be on top of your own track to graduate, and if you don't hear back on something (like financial aid) go back and ask about it. They often miss things.

    In three sentences

Warm, personable environment. Great teachers. Great school for non-traditional students.

    Campus Safety

The campus is very safe. In my time there, there were no reported rapes, assaults, or serious thefts.

    Greek Life

Keep in mind that SOU has no Greek system. There is a co-ed business fraternity for those majors only. If this is a non-negotiable for you, seek out other options. Some students have an anti greek system attitude.

    Clubs and Activities

I had a great time in student government. There's a lot of varied clubs to choose from, and it's very easy for students to find their niche. If a club based around your interest doesn't exist yet, the university makes it very easy to start one.

Great for these types of students

SOU is great for theatre students and those who love Shakespeare. If you are artsy, hipster-y, and a nature lover, Ashland is the place for you. If you thrive in bigger towns/cities, you may feel suffocated by the small-town feel. Definitely visit the area before you commit to SOU!

    What to do for fun

Ashland is an interesting little town, and not at all short on natural beauty. Spring and fall are especially nice. Downtown and Lithia Park are charming, and there are some great hiking spots. Keep in mind, Ashland is a tourist destination (for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival), not a typical college town. February thru November is the Shakespeare season, so there are almost always plays to see.

    Food and Dining

The food was hit or miss. The breakfast and lunch was usually really good, but sometimes dinner could be unpleasant. There were not a lot of healthy options, if you're a very health-conscious person. Of course, this may have changed since I left, so check with current message boards and the school.

    Dorm Life

My personal dorm experience wasn't great. The buildings were old and outdated, and I personally didn't like sharing a space with so many people. To be fair, since I left, the university has built an entirely new dorm complex that I've heard great things about.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are very tough, and some are easy A's. It really depends on the professor. You will definitely walk out of the class feeling prepared to succeed in your chosen field.

    Tips for prospective students

Be certain that a small, liberal arts university is what you really want. If you like wild parties and thriving college towns, SOU is not the place for you. Everything stays pretty quiet and low-key. Look into the school's major that you have declared; SOU is in retrenchment and some majors are in danger of being cut.

    In three sentences

Southern Oregon University is in a breathtaking location. The school has great student groups and government. The criminology and theatre programs are very strong.

    Campus Safety

SOU, and the city of Ashland, are very safe. I feel comfortable walking around alone. And there are several call buttons located around the campus, so that if you do feel unsafe you can press them and campus security will come escort you to your car or back to the dorms.

    Greek Life

SOU does not have sororities or fraternities.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to go to a smaller college, love the outdoors, like colder weather, and don't mind not having a lot to do on weekends.

    Bang for the buck

If you are an in-state student, definitely. An out-of-state with no scholarships, no.

    What to do for fun

SOU is about a mile from downtown Ashland, and its an easy walk. Also, there are plenty of outdoor activities in the area, such as hiking or river rafting.

    Food and Dining

I would give the dining four stars, but the meal plans are very expensive for the quality of the food served. And if you eat during the off-hours, your options are severely limited

    Academic Rigor

Overall I have found college to be less rigorous than I thought it would be. Depending on the course, SOU's courses can be still fairly challenging.
