Great for these types of students

Students who want to get an education but who are concerned about being in over-their-heads in debt. Furthermore, Southern State is a great college for those who want to stay close to home and for those students who are not ready for the big public university or college scene. In addition, this college is great for students who do not know if college is right for them. They can explore their options at Southern State and try on the college experience to see if it is a right fit for them.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking for a college that has small class size, individualized attention, and a college that is affordable, Southern State is a great choice.

    Bang for the buck

Southern State Community College is unmatched in its affordability and the education that you receive here.

    Am learning a lot

I've been here at Southern State for two quarters already and I can definitely tell you that I have learned a lot here. I was on a seven year hiatus from school and when I decided to come back to school, Southern State gave me the review I needed to get back into the grove of things and continue on with my education. The professors are great, or at least, the ones that I had. They really challenged me to be the best that I can be as a student and as a future professional.

    Bang for the buck

seems pretty reasonable compared to some colleges i have looked at.

    What to do for fun

they offer drama classes and sports such as softball, baseball, and basketball.

    Food and Dining

they only have vending machines. but there are plenty of food facilities close to the college.

    Dorm Life

there are no dorms in this school.

    Academic Rigor

the classes pretty much follow along what major you are in. the teachers pretty much tell you what they expect on the first day. as long as you keep up with the pace it is not overwhelming.

    Tips for prospective students

register for classes early and keep on top of your work.

    Campus Safety

Southern State Community College recently installed numerous surveillance cameras around all of the campuses. The parking lots are always well lit, and the campuses are in great locations. I have always felt felt at Southern State Community College.

    Bang for the buck

Southern State Community College is the second cheapest college in the state of Ohio. It is a great place to start your higher education, whether you are still in high school, have just graduated high school, or have been out of the education loop for a while.

Southern State Community College provides various activities for its students. Each year every campus holds a Spring Fling for the students and faculty to let loose and have some fun. Different clubs and organizations are available for students to partake in.

    Dorm Life

Southern State Community College has no dorms; it is a commuter school. Southern State Community College does however have four locations, making drive time very manageable.

    Academic Rigor

Attendance to class mandatory and necessary for classroom success! The professors are always willing to help their students, and tutoring options are available. Be prepared to spend at least two hours working on classroom material outside of class time per credit hour.

    Tips for prospective students

When enrolling for classes at Southern State Community College, talk to your advisers first - they are there to help! Get involved in all the activities such as tutoring, student government, and athletics that you can! Remember to stay in close contact with your professors!

    Campus Safety

There are very few incidents at Southern State.

    Clubs and Activities

You really have to look hard to find clubs, but activities are everywhere, given you put in the time to look.

Great for these types of students

Being a small college, they only offer associates degrees and certificates. Because of this, Southern State is great for those trying to start a new career or break into a new field. They have one of the nation's best Practical Nursing programs and like six or seven different computer-related degrees (I am going to get my Associate's in Applied Computer Science). They have a huge variety to choose from.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Well, as I said before, they have an annual chili cook-off. They also have a building at south campus that holds student art work that you can visit when ever you want. (The artwork is constantly changing). Other than that, you have recurring events that you will have to look around for.

    Bang for the buck

Southern State is one of the cheapest options for colleges anywhere. Between financial aid and the $2000 scholarship they gave me, I have more than enough to finish without having to put out a dime for tuition or books. As long as your grades are good, you can basically go to the school for free. (assuming you have financial aid)

    What to do for fun

This is really dependant on what lengths you are willing to go to to have fun. Southern State has a lot of fun events and there are usually things to do in Hillsboro. For instance, just this past week, Southern State had their annual chili cook-off. Students got to try as many as around 20 different homemade chili recipes and vote for their favorite. Also, in the beginning of this semester students put on a performance of the musical Annie. In general, if you are looking to do something, take a look around the school. There are fliers for events everywhere!

    Food and Dining

If you like cafeteria food, you will like Southern State's food. Their main menu consists of such things as fries, burgers, chicken sandwiches (both grilled and fried), chicken fingers, etc. Personally, I love their grilled chicken sandwiches. Also, I think it is worth noting that everything is made fresh by students when you order it.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms at Southern State Community College.

    Academic Rigor

How hard the classwork is depends on the class you are in. For instance, I took Business on the Internet. The requirements for this class are as follows: 4 quizzes (all equally weighted), 12 pre-class surveys (where you ask the professor any questions you have regarding the week's material), 12 homework assignments (most are essays), and a website that you must create with a group of students that gives tips on starting an e-commerce site. On the other hand, for my History of Art I class, all i have are 12 quizzes, 4 tests (equally weighed), and a short 2-3 page paper describing an art era or a culture's artistic qualities. It really just depends on the class. Most are manageable.

    Tips for prospective students

The biggest thing that I would warn prospective students is that, unlike a university where you may not knw 90% of the students in your classes, Southern State is very close-knit. You will find that many of the students you have in one class, you also will have in another, even if the classes are not really related to one another. Becuase of this, you really get a chance to know people.

    In three sentences

If you are looking to get your foot in the door of a new career. Southern State Community College is the place for you. They have a wide range of degrees and the professors are very kind and helpful. In general, it is just a very nice, affordable school.
