Great for these types of students

Cedar City is great for those who want a college small enough to meet people more than once but big enough to meet new people everyday. The local community is great and the area is beautiful. I would recommend it to those who are willing to go out and discover life and enjoy it, instead of waiting for life to find them.

    Tips for prospective students

Get your financial information done early, and if you want a job plan on being in Cedar City two weeks before school starts. To be guaranteed a fun semester, be a outgoing person willing to got out of your comfort zone and get involved in clubs.

    Am enjoying being here

There is always something to do in Cedar City. Local various religious groups do activities throughout the semester, and students get free admission to school plays, performances, and sport games. The Shakespearean festival is right on campus and hold performances during the fall and is delightful to attend. There are also many hiking and biking trails, city celebrations and places to go camping in the nearby mountains. Night games and inter murals are are also held on campus on a weekly basis.

    Am learning a lot

The class sizes are fairly small therefore you get to really know your teachers. In the Upper Division classes you get to be acquainted with those of your major which can be helpful when you organize study groups.

Great for these types of students

Any student is great for SUU. Diversity is everywhere. Have the experience of a lifetime and LIVE THE TRADITION of the Thunderbirds!!!

    Tips for prospective students

1.) Make sure you have financial aid. It will always help to apply for scholarships and FAFSA!! That is a huge help for me. 2.) Make sure you know your professors' hours when they are available and when they're not. It's less hassle when you and your professors are not busy at the same time. 3.) Just be yourself and no one else. Express yourself in a cool respectful way. OH!!! and... 4.) Make sure you have a CAR! Sometimes it's fun to walk to stores but then again, it sucks not having a car if you need to go to WalMart and shop. That's about it for now.

    Bang for the buck

Bang for the buck? Money? Well, SUU creates a ONE-on-ONE attention with your professors. Remember when I said that a class could be more than 20 people? Well, I had one of those classes and I was really shocked when my professor called out my name. I didn't expect him to know my name from a large group like the one I had. The tuition isn't that pretty but it is totally worth the money you pay. The professors don't teach here for the money and let the students do what they want. They teach the students because they want to see them succeed. When you have a problem, any staff member could help. Man! I thought I wouldn't get my money's worth of education, but I got more than that. And so could you.

    Am enjoying being here

Being in SUU was like a second home for me. I love the environment and just the vibe of the whole place that I always said, I want to go back home and I'm already back with my parents. When I say that, I was talking about my own dorm with my roommates and friends. When you attend here, people are so nice that you immediately create new friends from different places, enjoy their company, and you're able to be yourself. SUU has made a huge part of me. I was able to express who I truly am and they respected that as long as I respected them as well. Enjoyment here is non-stop. Southern Utah may not be an extravagant university, but it's the university where you can always figure a way to have fun.

    Am learning a lot

In Southern Utah University, the class sizes are usually like 20 students or less. Sometimes it's even more. But even though the class is huge or small, the learning process never ends. The professors make it so easy for students to understand so that you wouldn't be able to struggle. They make learning like a part of life instead of just school work. When you ask for help, they can help you. I learned how to be open in my first semester of school in SUU. Their slogan is Learning Lives Forever and it is true. You will learn things that will last you the rest of your life.

Great for these types of students

I think SUU is great fro anyone, unless you get homesick fairly easily you are out in the middle of nowhere almost. But, you are also surrounded by lots of great opportunities for adventure. Check out the local outdoor scene, there are endless possibilities for outdoor fun.

    Tips for prospective students

Get your Financial Aid completed and sent in soon!! There are a lot more papers than I thought that need to be sent in. Also, take advantage of all the help that they are willing to give you. My advisor personally called me to get me registered for my classes.

Great for these types of students

If you aren't the one to want to sit in a class of 300 other students and you want to live somewhere that's really involved, SUU is the place where you belong!

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you use your professor's office hours. They are just sitting there at that allotted time just waiting for students to come in and talk with them. If you establish a relationship with their professor, they can help you out so much more, not only with the class itself, but also with your resume, internship and job placements, and anything else you may need help with.

    Bang for the buck

Private Attention at Public Value. It's so true! I am hardly in a class that I feel like I am just a face or number. I am paying a public institution's tuition rate and feel like I am getting amazing one-on-one attention from my professors.

    Am enjoying being here

Cedar City has become my second home; I can't imagine living anywhere else but here!

    Am learning a lot

I love the professor's here on campus! I know that I, Brianna, am their number one priority. They try to help me in any way they possibly can and they truly care about me and my goals.

    Tips for prospective students

-Know what your scholarships cover and what they are intended to cover. Tuition is typically raised yearly, so be prepared to protest it if it decreases the value of your scholarship. -Most departmental scholarships are awarded to upper class-men and are rarely stacked. -Apply for FAFSA as soon as possible -If you are planning on living off campus, either reserve your housing early (April or May), or wait until the last possible second (the week that school starts). You get better deals either of those ways. Don't worry about it disappearing. Cedar City is overbuilt; that is why housing is inexpensive. -Apply for jobs everywhere and pray someone can hook you up. If you are Work-Study eligible, start applying two weeks before school starts and you'll get something fairly quickly. -Apply early! -Tour the campus. A lot of students don't consider coming to SUU until after the tour. Also, you get a free T-Shirt and a coupon for 20% off at the bookstore. Careful, though- the coupon expires. -If you don't like something, TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT IT! The staff is sympathetic with the students and often will change something just because you talked to them. -Make friends with the faculty. They can give more advice than simply homework help. -Deposit every dollar you make between now and college. You will not regret it.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is cheap- less than 3,000 for instate students. The City is small which makes gas more affordable. Nearly every week there are events going on for free! Students have access to everything on campus for free (excluding the food court, rock wall, and weights gym). Students have the opportunity to engage is resume building activities (service) There is a tangible atmosphere of learning! Classes are intentionally restricted in size; hence, students can have one on one time with their professors! -St. George is only 45 minutes away and Las Vegas 1.5-3 hours depending on who is driving.

    Am enjoying being here

Within two weeks of being here, I made more friends than I can count. Because the campus is small, you come to know just about everyone. People are friendly and very open. There are so many opportunities for service including trips to Mexico for only $450-$480. Every first Monday of the month we have Bread and Soup Night (all you can eat for $1 and a can of food). My professors honestly care about me and my learning; the campus is safe; there is no winter inversion; thunderstorms are regular and when it rains, the smell of wet sage and pine is crisp and rejuvenating. Not only do I love the location and my classes, I love the clubs on campus. Some of these clubs include ASL, Ukulele, Soccer, and Swing. SUU also has a fine Honors program with plenty perks. One of these perks is a study room exclusive for its students. Recently we took place in the annual SUU homecoming cardboard-duct-tape boat race in the swimming pool. On the flip side, there are always those professors and fellow students who no one enjoys being around. At the moment I am not enjoying my ENGL 2010 class for this reason. Alas, my thinking is being directed in ways I never thought possible; therefore, I am learning and shall not complain too much.

    Am learning a lot

Everyday little nuances I never noticed before are opened up to me. My favorite class this semester is UNIV 1000, a seminar dedicated to first semester students. The title of the textbook is Your Expanding Intelligence. It is different, but the learning tools presented are effective and worth knowing how to use. Students are encouraged to think out of the box. We are given principles, then expected to run with them and return with something creative. Professors are open minded. True, they believe they are correct, but if challenged most will listen to their students if the latter presents enough evidence to support their proposition. Everything is about learning, experimenting, thinking, and I love it! Southern Utah University (SUU) is also beginning a system called Experiential Learning. What this means is students will be offered (Freshman of fall 2011 will be required) the chance to employ what they have learned in their major in multiple different categories: Creative, outdoors, global, etc. So an engineering major could design a water system for children in Africa- engineering, but a global/service focus. Students really are expected to apply what they learn.

Great for these types of students

SUU is great for ANYBODY! Me being the big city girl, I enjoyed my first year and cannot wait to go back! It really did surprise me in the most amazing ways. I'm not an outdoor kind of girl, but SUU and the town offers A LOT of outdoor fun. Get out and do something you would never dream of doing. College is about experiencing new things. SUU gives you just that!

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Do NOT judge a book by its' cover. Things just might surprise you. 2. Be yourself, the key to making & KEEPING friends, is to be who you are. 3. Get used to traveling out your comfort zone. I've never been away from my parents before, & going out of state was a nightmare for me, but it actually turned out to be the best thing & most AMAZING experience. Trust me(: 4. Stay on top of your work. Know what you want and DON'T forget why your here. Don't get caught up in having too much fun. College is WAY different than high school. 5. Last but not least: Make the best of your college years. College is the BEST experience you will ever have!

    Bang for the buck

Money is tough. Point blank period. I learned a great lesson my first year. I didn't think that money was going to be THAT big of a deal, but being out of state, tution is so much higher for me. The best thing to do, is to apply for scholarships EVERY SINGLE DAY! Fill out at least 10-15 a week, at the very least. Applying for scholarships is like a job. It takes time but think about it: for every hour you spend applying for scholarships, if you win a $500 scholarship, you just got paid 500 bucks an hour! Take it from someone who didn't take it seriously my first semester. Scholarships are VERY important and HARD to get. The sooner you start, the better!

    Am enjoying being here

I have to admit that when I first came down to the school for orientation, I thought I was going to hate it. It was hard for a big city girl like me, being from Los Angeles & Las Vegas, and moving to a small town like Cedar City, I thought my social life was going to go down the drain. But my first year, I met the most AMAZING people. We became like family and now when I go back to Las Vegas on break, I look forward to going back to Cedar City to see my friends, I mean my FAMILY. We grew really fond of each other! I learned that it is not about the town that your in, its about what you make of it. Meeting my friends have made the experience at SUU 100 times better than I had ever imagined!

    Am learning a lot

The best thing about going to SUU? The classes are fairly small size. That's a GREAT thing. You dont have to worry about not being able to get to know your professor or vice versa. There are some classes that have around 40-50 students but even then, the professors still try to get to know their students, as long as your willing to make the effort. I had a class my first semester of college, it had 50 students and by the end of the first week, the professor knew my name. Its all about WANTING to be there and making the EFFORT. If you believe in yourself, you'll learn A LOT. This school doesn't only teach you things IN class, but outside of class too. You learn to be yourself, this school had some great diversity going on. You learn a lot about cultures by the people you meet!

Great for these types of students

Although SUU is a great school for most students, if you are looking for a very focused or technical degree, it may not be the best choice. However, if you don't want to sit through classes where the teacher drones on, there are over 100 students, and you're just a statistic, this school should be high on your list.

    Tips for prospective students

As always, get your finances in order as soon as possible. Scholarships, loans, grants, parents (hint hint), and a job are all very good things to have. If you want a job in Cedar City, you'll want to come well before the year starts, because you'll be competing with several hundred other students. If you're debating about bringing a car, don't worry about it. You'll make friends quickly, and chances are good that at least one will have a car and be willing to take you around town, or even let you borrow it. Use your professors. They are dedicated to helping students learn, and some are bored out of their minds in their offices, waiting for the opportunity to do so. Don't worry if you don't have a major all lined up, you will get an advisor that will meet with you personally on a regular basis to help you with that process.

    Bang for the buck

Although tuition, room and board, food, books, and the like can add up and perhaps put a pretty big dent in your bank account, you won't regret it. In my first year, I let go of some extra cash to live on campus in the new Cedar Hall, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I'd made. The entire campus is well-maintained, you get a phenomenal educational experience, and after attending for a month or two, you realize that what you're paying for is all essential to making this an exceptional college experience.

    Am enjoying being here

There is virtually no one on campus that I cannot get along with. All people here on campus and in Cedar City are always good to be around, and there is always something going on. Whether it's a basketball, volleyball, or basketball game, a dance, a comedian, or a carnival, life is always exciting. The Shakespearean Festival in the fall is always a great event to attend. In the winter, five ski and snowboard resorts are within an hour from campus, plus you can rent your own outdoor gear from SUU's outdoor center.

    Am learning a lot

SUU provides educational programs for just about any interest one could have, and all of them are well-rounded and involved. The classes are small and centralized, so each student can get help whenever they need it. Each professor is required to post open-office hours for students who need personal help, and several have a complete open-door policy.

Great for these types of students

SUU is great for students who like to learn by experience and do hands-on projects. It's great for students who enjoy smaller classrooms and a personal relationship with teachers. With all of its clubs, organizations, and diverse student populace, SUU is a great place for students who like to try out and do a bunch of things and learn about other cultures.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early. Work hard on your grades. SUU does have several generous scholarships, so staying on top of your application and your schoolwork will definitely pay off. Come with an open and friendly attitude, and it will be easy for you to make friends and succeed in the classroom.

    Bang for the buck

I definitely feel that I'm getting my money's worth for tuition. The housing is also very nice, depending on which hall you're in. The only place I feel I don't get my money's worth is in the cafeteria; the food is okay, but it's not amazing or particularly healthy, and it's expensive. I would recommend living in housing that doesn't require you to have a meal plan at the cafeteria; it's healthier and cheaper to prepare your own meals.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love being at SUU! The campus is small, and everyone is extremely friendly. It's easy to feel at home here. It's also located close to several national parks, so there's always something to do outside.

    Am learning a lot

Most of the classes at SUU are very hands on and interactive. All of the professors have a thorough knowledge of and passion for their topic which makes it easier to learn the subject they teach. The teachers are very friendly, and if I don't understand something in class, I can always go to the professors' office hours and ask more questions. Outside of academics, there are tons of students from other areas and cultures that I learn a lot from, and SUU also has lots of clubs where I can pick up new skills or practice ones I already have.

Students who love small class sizes and personal interaction with teachers will love this school. There are also all sorts of clubs that anyone can join. If you love a fun, beautiful place, SUU is the place for you!

    Tips for prospective students

Go to classes, and make sure you know your teachers personally. They are there for you. You are paying for the education, use you money wisely, and get all the help you need.

    Bang for the buck

School here is really cheap compared to other schools throughout the state of Utah. Also, SUU gives great scholarships.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the campus. Everything is really close together. It is easy to walk from class to class in 5 minutes. The school also puts together great activities during the week and weekends so that you are not trying to find things to do, since there is not a lot to do in Cedar City. Also, there are wonderful plays that the theatre puts on that are free to the students.

    Am learning a lot

Taking the General Ed classes this year, has been great. The class sizes are really small, and you really get to know your teachers. The teachers know each student by name, and are willing to help you with any questions that you have.

SUU is great and has something for everyone. You will feel welcome because the staff and other students actually want you there; you aren't just a number in a class like at BYU or the U. My professors knew me by name by the 2nd and 3rd days of class.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep your grades up, APPLY EARLY, and search your school's website for other scholarships. Apply for every scholarship you can find that you are compatible with. I applied the first week of my Senior Year for SUU and was accepted 3 weeks later, which enabled me to receive a scholarship offer in November when they sent out the first batch of offers. DON'T PROCRASTINATE! Also, save EVERY DOLLAR you make before college! You'll thank yourself when you have to buy groceries and textbooks.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is less than other universities (a couple $100 less than BYU). It's not bad, especially if you get a scholarship. I have a half-tuition for 2 years and that is DEFINITELY helpful. I only have to worry about $1000 a semester compared to $2000+.

    Am enjoying being here

Everytime I am on campus I feel welcome and like I belong. I love SUU! Everyone on campus is more than happy to help you to understand how to register or do anything you aren't sure of.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned so much in the two months school has been in. Especially my biology class; we go over so much material! Word to the wise: when you get new material in a class, start studying THAT DAY. Otherwise you'll be in trouble when you have a quiz 'cause you procrastinated. Learned that the hard way...

Students who don't mind the small-town feel, can entertain themselves easily, and don't mind the wind- it's always windy here!

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely come for a tour before you decide on this school. Once you've seen everything here then you are sure to fall in love with it. Also keep your eyes open for any leadership or academic scholarships- they've really made my education here possible!

    Bang for the buck

I think that I've gotten the most bang for my buck at SUU, but it really depends on how involved you become. Some students don't like it here because they don't take advantage of all that SUU has to offer!

The school is beautiful and inviting, but the cute little town is what really won me over! Everyone is so friendly and helpful, I love it!

Anyone really. It is in a small city so if that is bothersome I wouldn't recommend SUU.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved. There is always something going on somewhere. Don't be afraid to go and talk to the professors they are all willing to work with their students.

    Greek Life

greek life is an amazing way to get involved and to make close friends! i strongly recommend it. there are 2 sororities: alpha phi international sorority and delta psi omega (a local sorority); and 2 fraternities: sigma chi and chi phi.

Great for these types of students

    nursing and theatre majors.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    true t-bird night

    Bang for the buck

it is comparable to a private institution at a public school's cost.

    What to do for fun

you can go hiking, biking, camping, bowling, etc. there is a little lake on the hill that is great for swimming, as well as several parks. it is located near st. george for shopping, and fairly close to zion national park and bryce canyon.

    Dorm Life

the new dorm facilities are very nice.

    Academic Rigor

suu has many excellent departments. the theatre department is unbeatable due to cedar city's local shakespearean festival. the nursing program has also grown so much and has had a 100% pass rate on the nclex state boards 3 semesters out of 4.

    Tips for prospective students

get involved with organizations on campus. whether it is student government, greek organizations, sports, or a club, being involved on campus and meeting new people allows for a positive experience at southern utah university.

    In three sentences

suu is a great learning atmosphere because it is reasonably priced and has small classroom sizes, making learning easier and more convenient. your professors typically know you by name and are willing to work with you if there are any difficulties. also, the location is great, offering plenty of outdoor activities and learning opportunities.

    Campus Safety

there aren't very many violent crimes committed in the town itself, let alone the college. in my experience the campus has been a very safe and friendly environment.

    Clubs and Activities

there are many clubs, you just have to go out and find them.

Great for these types of students

students who don't mind living in a small town but love making friends as there are a lot of awesome people here. for students who love the outdoors. students looking for a great school to prepare them for medical school.

    Bang for the buck

definitely the most bang for my buck.

    What to do for fun

there are many activities to participate in on campus. off campus there are many national parks that are easily accessible and only a few hours or less away. my favorite parks have been zions, which is amazing, and snow canyon. las vegas and salt lake city aren't very far away either. there aren't very many things to do in the town itself other than the outdoor rec, but i think it makes it easier to focus on studying.

    Food and Dining

the meal plans are a pretty good way to get the most bang for your buck. the cafeteria is all you can eat and they like to spice up the menu quite often. the quality of the food, though, is fair.

    Dorm Life

the dorms are located a few hundred feet from the actual college. my experience living at the dorms was wonderful as the ra's tried to get everyone on the floor to know each other and we even had activities where we got to know people from other floors better, it can be a very social environment. the downside, though, is the price. i was living in eccles where the dorms had about 5 rooms each for 6 roommates and was paying about 2 grand. i ended up moving out to some student apartments less than 5 minutes off campus for 1 grand for the same size room but with fewer, 4, roommates to share the room with, which also had all of the same utilities and even free laundry.

    Academic Rigor

i have no experience in any of the other programs, but the biology program here at suu is very rigorous and has some of the highest acceptance rates into medical school.

    Tips for prospective students

for any students looking to attend this university in the fall, i recommend finding a nice place to life off campus for much cheaper rent and i also strongly recommend moving in at the beginning of summer because this is the best time to find jobs in this small town.

    In three sentences

southern utah university is the perfect college for anyone looking for a low-priced yet high quality education. one of the best parts about this university is the small class sizes they offer. education really is personal here. the campus is also very beautiful and has a really nice forest feel.

    Campus Safety

there are emergency poles all over campus, if you are being attacked, you can run to one of these poles and campus police will rush to the scene. there is also an escort service offered, if you call the number provided on the back of your student id card, an escort will come to wherever you are on campus and walk you wherever you need to go. the escort service is great so that you don't have to walk home alone if you're studying late in the library or working on a project on campus after dark.

    Clubs and Activities

get involved with suusa (suu student association) and attend the activities they put on, they are a lot of fun and they put something on every weekend, usually they have a few activites going on. we also have a lot of clubs on campus, there's something for everyone, so during the first week of the semester go to the club fair and sign up for things!

Great for these types of students

students who are open to a lot of diversity will love suu! suu has a great foreign exchange program so you get to know students of many different cultures.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

old maine was the first building built on campus, and there is a legend that there is a ghost in the building, if you look up into the window at midnight on a full moon, it's said that you can see the ghost!

    Bang for the buck

suu is a great value for your money. small class size, great professor-student relations, a beautiful campus, wonderful professors, and tons of opportunities, all the benefits of a larger school at the price of a small college.

    What to do for fun

suu has so many activities going on every night! there is no reason anyone who goes to southern utah university should ever be bored. suusa is constantly bringing in comedians, musicians, and other entertainers that are free for students! there are a lot of really fun dances not only at the school but also out in the community. the school also has a great performing and visual arts program so there are always great theatre, dance, music, and art shows to attend. suu hosts the utah shakespeare festival, so in the fall you can go and see professional plays at a student discount. suu also has a lot of clubs on campus, i would recommend joining a few of them, it's a great way to get to know other students and have fun doing something that interests you. the clubs also put on a lot of fun activities that are open to the student body. there are also a lot of fun outdoor activites around cedar city, we are really close to a lot of national parks, so get out and go see some beautiful scenery while you hike around southern utah!

    Food and Dining

the food served in the dining hall is.. cafeteria food. it's not great, but it's definitely a lot better than anything you would have time to make for yourself. you get a little sick of it by the end of the year, but if you're like me and you live off campus your second year, you will definitely miss your meal plan.

    Dorm Life

i lived in cedar hall my freshman year and it was a really great way to get to know a lot of people. the dorms were not only a lot of fun, but also provided an atmosphere that really helped me learn. there are study rooms with white board walls in each building of cedar hall that are a great place to go and do homework or study for a test. cedar hall also has a lobby with a bigscreen tv and a kitchen. it's a fun place to socialize and get to know the people living in your dorm.

    Academic Rigor

suu challenges students at the same level as other, larger schools. you will be challenged academically but they will give you every opportunity to succeed and do your best. communicate with your professors, go to learning labs, create study groups, and you will do well academically.

    Tips for prospective students

-talk to develop friendships with your professors. they want to help you but you have to take the initiative to go to their office and work with them. -get involved! there are so many great opportunities at suu, leadership opportunities, clubs, and activities, just to name a few.. go out there and join something! -seriously consider study abroad. suu has a great study abroad program, look at the options for your major and decide if it's something interesting. it's a rare opportunity i would highly recommend taking advantage of. my time spent studying abroad was one of the best times of my life and a i really learned a lot while there. -if you want a job, you need to move to cedar city a few weeks before school starts, or even better, at the beginning of the summer. cedar city is a hard place to find a job so you have to go down early if you want a chance. -don't procrastinate! this goes for any school, not just suu. do everything sooner rather than later and you'll have work of a better quality and save yourself a lot of stress.

    In three sentences

suu is an incredible school for a great value! you receive the education and opportunities that usually come from a larger school but with smaller class sizes and more individual attention from your professors. suu works very hard to make sure each student has the opportunity to succeed in their academics by creating great professor office hours, learning labs, and an atmosphere that is not only fun, but also very conducive to learning.

    Campus Safety

SUU has it's own police department, and hires security guards that constantly make rounds at campus and appearances at school events.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 130 clubs at SUU.

Great for these types of students

Great for students focused on education. For students who prefer a smaller, college town than a large city. For students who like to get into sports events for free.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every Homecoming friday True T-Bird Night takes place. You and a special friend go to Old Sorrow, which is a commemorative statue for the University's beginnings, at midnight and kiss, you then are a true t-bird. Every Friday SUU students wear red to show school pride.

    Bang for the buck

For the education and amenities at SUU the price is very well worth it.

    What to do for fun

SUU is located in Cedar City which is a very outdoor campus with many things to do, be it at the local reservoir or the mountains. The Utah Shakespeare Festival is held on campus with showings of Shakespeare's best plays. If you aren't into the outdoors and the arts, then a place like Cedar City you need to know how to create your own fun, by yourself or with friends that you meet.

    Food and Dining

Food and Dining at SUU takes places in Thunderbird Dining Circle, it's a buffet style dining hall. There's decent choice, but after a while there are repeats as to what is to eat. The times the dining hall is open is not optimal if your schedule does not match traditional eating times. There are small fast food type places in the student center where you can use dining dollars which are part of a meal plan if you want variety in your food.

    Dorm Life

Dorm Life is a fantastic place to meet people. The rooms are only a few years old which means the conditions and facilities are in extremely good shape. With near 100 other people in your building it's easy to meet people in the shared lobby while watching TV or playing games, or even doing laundry.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor at SUU is fairly strong considering its 8,000 student count. It's strong in many undergraduate programs, especially the arts. SUU also hosts many graduate programs if your education would take you there.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should take a tour of campus to see how great it is. The ease to move around, look in, or sit in if you can, on a class to experience what makes SUU great. Experience the red rock of Cedar City and what there is to do around.

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University provides students with a quality education; small class sizes, and real-world experience make your learning more meaningful and worthwhile.

    Bang for the buck

You get a great education here. The class sizes are small enough that the professors get to know you better than just a number in the class.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to visit campus before school starts. Meet with your academic adviser when you are trying to register for classes, they can give you tips on the classes.

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University is a great school. All the academic advisers are very helpful and will help you register for classes. Campus is very small and it's very easy to get to classes.

I'm a California Boy so I am use to great weather year around. Being here in SUU Cedar City, has been great. I've felt so at home since arriving here that I believe I've picked the right school to be at especially being so far away from home. Everyone is helpful here. There is a lot to do around school and town that the days go by fast.

ANYBODY!!! If you know what you want to major in, or if you don't, go to SUU because you will love it!

    Tips for prospective students

Go to SUU and see for your self how beautiful the campus and Cedar City is. Really become involved with other students, and make friends. These will be some of the best years of your life!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality of education you receive here, and how beautiful the campus is.

    Did enjoy being here

I absolutely LOVED SUU!!! It is a very beautiful school, and campus. I have attended and been to several campuses in Utah, and SUU is by far the best. There is always fun activities going on at the school, or just in Cedar City. Even though it is a bigger school, the students and teachers become very close, and so you will always see people you know.

    Did learn a lot

There is so much to learn at SUU! The class sizes are small, and so interaction with students and teachers is very good. The teachers and faculty really tried to connect with each student, and not only know their name, but have a relationship with them. This made it fun to learn, and easy to learn, because the teachers tried to make you the best student possible.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply Early...because when you apply earlier you may hear early from the school and when you hear from them you can usually start applying for housing and get first dibs on housing. Since it is first come first serve.

    Bang for the buck

Not the greatest school for financial aid but you have help and lots of options. Including many scholarship for minority students and a lot of free activities for students. And cheap housing options on and off campus.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here because there is a lot to do even for broke college students. The is hiking and biking and a lot of beautiful places where you can take pictures. (Which me and my roommates have been doing a lot) And if you want to go to the movies it is really cheap to go here.

    Am learning a lot

Many of the major classes are small especially those required classes like English and Computer classes. Some of these classes are smaller than my high school classes back at home. And you have a lot of resources here like a writing center to check your papers even if they are not English papers.

Great for these types of students

Southern Utah University is great for the type of students who want to have an adventure. If you want to learn how to put yourslef out there and explore the world around you then SUU is the place for you. You will learn so much not just about academics but about yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

The best tip that I can offer is that if you wish to have a job while at SUU you will need to search. In the end most people find a job but it is very difficult so start early in the summer and keep checking in with them. Other tips I would offer is to put yourself out there. If you really get involved at SUU there is no doubt that you will enjoy yourself and you will get rewards for it.

    Bang for the buck

The amount of tuition due at SUU is really worth what you get for it, especially if you get a scholarship. They make many available to you and it is very great way to help out with tuition.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here in Cedar City. It's a small town city which can sometimes take away from the college experience. Overall though it is fun there are so many people here, you will always meet someone new. The more you put yourself out there the more you will enjoy your time at SUU.

    Am learning a lot

I'm learning a lot more than I thought I would. The class sizes are small which makes it a lot easier for the teacher to have one on one time with you. It's not like other colleges where you hear that the teachers don't care because they actually do care about how well you do and if you learn or not. I have never had a teacher who didn't care or a teacher who I didn't like. You will learn so much while you're here.

I definitely feel very safe on campus. They not only have campus police that walk around at night, but they also have emergency poles where you can push a button if you are in danger!

    Greek Life

Fraternities and sororities are a big deal on campus! They always have things going on and are really involved.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many, MANY different clubs to choose from! You won't be disappointed.

Great for these types of students

SUU is very diverse...it is great for anyone! We have many foreign exchange students from: Korea, Saudi Arabia, Norway, and more!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    Bang for the buck

Good price for a good education!

    What to do for fun

Cedar City isn't the biggest place but there is always something fun to do--having game nights at your friends apartment, going bowling, to the movies, out for ice cream...you won't get bored! Plus there are many opportunities on campus as well as sporting events and clubs to get involved with. If you do happen to want to get away, sunny St. George, Utah is only a 45 minute drive, or if you want to head to the Vegas strip, that is only 2 hours away!

    Food and Dining

They have a cafeteria on campus, where you can buy a meal plan. Also, they have a few mini food places, such as Hogi Yogi, a mexican place, and the T-bird Grill. There are also a few small stores on campus as well that have grab-n-go types of foods.

    Dorm Life

Definitely live in the dorms your freshman year at least.

    Academic Rigor

Mostly, it depends on the class and the teacher, but it's nothing you can't handle! Just find something that interests you :)

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for a good time!

    In three sentences

I love Southern Utah University because the professors are simply wonderful, you don't feel like one in a million, and it's easy to find your way around. I feel like the faculty and staff really care about me beyond my education.

Southern Utah is great for those who like opportunities to get involved where they may not have otherwise had at a larger school. There are many chances to be a leader in service and student activities.

I attended the Governor's Honors Academy this summer, which helped me learn all about the campus and most of the school. I heard many times from the counselors and speakers that SUU was a GREAT place to learn! I do tend to need a bit more attention when I learn, and this is excellent because of the small class sizes and the unity you have with your classmates. It is going to be awesome! I can't wait for next year!

Anyone who's going into nursing or education, top notch programs! Anyone who wants their school to mold to them, and not have to mold to the school.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early! I applied by December 1st, and was able to qualify for an academic scholarship. A friend of mine applied December 5th.... and all the scholarships were gone. Even if you're still deciding which school to attend, you can always defer your scholarship later. Also, LIVE ON CAMPUS!! You get to meet people so much easier, there's no problem with trying to find parking 5 minutes before your 11 o'clock class, because its a 2-8 minute walk to pretty much any class on campus (trust me, I've timed it). The whole experience as a freshman totally prepares you for college life, and students that live on campus get better grades and have a smaller drop out rate.

    Bang for the buck

For everything that I'm doing, it's definitely worth the money spent. Its a little pricey for me right now because I'm out of state tuition, but in a year I'll gain residency and it'll be so much cheaper. The other costs like housing and a meal plan are DEFINITELY worth it. All the experience and good its doing me living on campus is priceless, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

    Am enjoying being here

SUU has a ton for every student to do. I'm involved in a leadership group so that takes the majority of my time but everyone I know is involved. My roommates are in a sorority that does so many fun things, and still serves the community. There's student government, service clubs, intramurals, and clubs for everything from the popular QSA, to Star Wars. And if you really want a club, you just need 5 other people to join you to start your own. Everyone on campus is super friendly, you can walk around and not have to stare at your feet the whole time. I start up random conversations with people on the quad all the time, because that's normal here!

    Am learning a lot

The classes are so much more interesting than they were in high school. I'm a history major and I still enjoy my chemistry class because I am learning so much more than I dreamed. The teachers especially really care about you. My professors all knew my name in the first week and if I ever have a problem they are more than happy to help me during office hours.

there are tons of things to do for fun in cedar city! you can go hiking on the canyon trail and catch a glimpse of the beautiful red rock mountain, go snowboarding in the winter time, go mountain biking, swim at the pe building, play basketball at the pe building, play raquetball, go backpacking, etc.

    Food and Dining

    Dorm Life

i do not live in a dorm, so i couldn't answer this question.

    Academic Rigor

you get out of your academics what you put into it. if you want a good, secure job, you're going to need good grades and higher education. but if you don't want those things, it's not necessary for you to study and get good grades. the basic classes or generals aren't as rigorous as the higher ones.

    Tips for prospective students

    Bang for the buck

this is a great in-state school tuition-wise but it's a little more on the expensive side for out of state students like me, but i really do think it's worth it. i love southern utah university.

    What to do for fun

i like to go to the pool, hang out with my apartment mates, and i go to some of the on campus activities like zumba which are free and lots of fun.

    Food and Dining

i lived in the dorms for half a year when my dorm was declared unsafe but the time i did spend in the dorms was great. we built a little community and i still see people on campus from juniper and we know each other really well and its fun to see them around.

    Academic Rigor

like any school not all the professors are equal but i have had really good experiences with my classes. they may be hard but its worth it because i'm learning so much interesting information.

    Tips for prospective students

register for classes as soon as possible because the class sizes are fairly small so it can be difficult to get into a class if you wait too long.

    Campus Safety

Safety was a big issue for me in choosing a school, and I can truthfully say that I feel perfectly safe on this campus. Southern Utah itself is very safe, but this campus takes extra measures to ensure the safety of it's students.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have this giant rock named gunther on campus and every student has the right to paint on it if they clear it with the student center first. We use it to raise awareness for whatever cause is highlighted that month, we painted a giant red V on it on the fifth of November, it's fun to walk by and see what crazy pattern is on it.

    What to do for fun

Cedar City is small, and it's not easy to find the fun things to do, but there are great things to do with friends! If you like snow then Brianhead ski resort is only forty minutes away. We also have a ton of local theaters that put on plays and improv shows. Read the fliers that are plastered all over town. You'll find something to do.

    Food and Dining

In the student center we have the cafeteria. That's where you go if you have a meal plan (which is a smart thing to get your first year or semester). They have a wide variety of food that changes every day so you aren't eating the same meals over and over again. Plus, they have a huge salad bar and vegetarian options for those on the healthy side.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is not for me personally, but I have friends who live in the dorms and they love it. It's a little pricey, but it's safe, comfortable and you're surrounded by people.

    Academic Rigor

The classes stretched me and I'm a fairly good student. However, if you keep up on your homework and don't party every weekend you'll be golden. The professors are always there and eager to help.

    Tips for prospective students

Jump right in! Don't hold back. It is next to impossible to not be involved in this school. Sign up for everything, go to activities, join clubs, make friends! Your college experience will be a million times better.

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University is perfect for students looking for a personalized education from teachers that really care. The community is not very large so you know what's going on in the school and who to talk to if you need help. All of the colleges in this University are award winning and for a good reason.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a wide variety of clubs on campus. We have a club week every semester where you can find clubs that you would want to join. You can also create your own clubs pretty easily here as well.

Great for LDS or conservative students. If you have to have a night life and a big city, then SUU is probably not the best choice for you.

    Bang for the buck

SUU was recently awarded for being one of the best value schools in the Country. SUU offers a great education at a cheaper price. Tuition rates are rising, but it is still one of the better deals in Utah.

    What to do for fun

I go hiking, play sports, and hang out with friends. The outdoor life is really great here. There are a lot of state parks nearby and all sorts of stuff to keep you busy. It is a small town though, so sometimes you have to be creative on what to do with your time.

    Food and Dining

The dining hours are short. The dining room closes at 7pm on week days and 5pm on weekends. But the food is really good.

    Dorm Life

This is a very social place to be. There are a lot of different activities organized every month for people who live on campus. I lived on campus my freshman year and absolutely loved it.

    Academic Rigor

The physical education department is great. The exercise science majors really learn a lot and they have professors who require a lot from them. I have learned so much from this school.

    Tips for prospective students

    Bang for the buck

The on campus living may be a bit expensive for what you get, but it provides a great experience, especially for first time students. Tuition wise, the classes are worth every penny.

    What to do for fun

On campus there are plenty of events, musicals, plays, dances, and other activities for the students to enjoy. Off campus the most Cedar city has is a couple parks, an aquatic center, a few movie theaters, and a bowling alley.

    Food and Dining

There is a small food court that offers a variety of different choices, along with the Thunderbird Circle which is pretty much a cafeteria, buffet style. There's usually a pretty good variety, but very rarely do you find outstanding meals.

    Dorm Life

I think it depends on where you live and how social you are. I lived in Juniper before it was shut down and the dorm life was pretty social, then I moved in to Eccles and you really needed to make friends in order to ensure a social dorm life there. Now I am living in Cedar Hall South and the social life is a great balance.

    Academic Rigor

    Campus Safety

A great feature on SUU's campus is the presence of the emergency towers that are located all across campus. The emergency towers have glowing lights on them so that they are visible at night. These towers have buttons on them for students to press if there is an emergency or if they need some sort of help. These towers are all over campus, so students can see them wherever they are and they can always have them as an option to use if there is an emergency.

    Clubs and Activities

SUU has limitless options for clubs that students can be a part of. It is limitless because even if there isn't a club for something you want to do, you can start it yourself. You can do anything here! The student government keeps students' calendars full with activities and events that happen all over campus for all kinds of students. We have the Howl during Halloween (a spook alley and dance), there are always sporting events to go to (of which the ladies gymnastics team is extremely well ranked), there are often comedians and other performers on campus, and there are movie nights galore! This list doesn't cover all of the activities that are offered at SUU. There is always something fun to do!

Great for these types of students

This is a great school for students who want to receive a top education for a small price. You cannot beat the class sizes, the leaning experiences, or the educators that teach at SUU. This is a place where students can discover who they are and who they want to be. It is a place where learning lives forever and where students can make a name for themselves. SUU is a school where everyone has a place and a role to play.

Every year, during homecoming week, students participate in True T-Bird Night. At this time, any students who want to be true t-birds, go to the statue of Old Sorrel. And then the kissing begins! To be a true t-bird, you must kiss someone at Old Sorrel at midnight during homecoming. The best part is, everyone gets free chap stick! In 2008 a bell tower was built on the SUU campus. During the holiday seasons, it plays music every hour. This bell tower has also served as a building stone for a new tradition on campus. Students are not to walk underneath the bell tower while on campus. When freshman attend their orientation, they are all walked under the bell tower going west to east, to symbolically say that the sun is rising and they are starting a new time in life. They are not to walk under the bell tower again until graduation. Part of the graduation ceremonies consists of the graduates walking through the bell tower from east to west, as if the sun is setting on this phase of life. This is a new tradition but it has been a lot of fun to integrate into the life of SUU.

    Bang for the buck

As difficult as it is, college tuition is going up. However, it is not only going up at SUU, it is going up everywhere. Because of this, it is extremely important for prospective students to pick a school where they know they will be spending their money wisely. Because of everything that SUU has to offer, it is safe to say that you are getting more than what you pay for when you attend SUU. Yes, you take the classes you pay for. But it is so much more than that! You receive a personalized education, you get one-on-one attention from professors and administration, you get to live in beautiful country, and you get to find a place where you can truly belong.

    What to do for fun

If a person chooses to attend Southern Utah University, they will be living in Cedar City, Utah. Cedar City is located nearby thirteen state and national parks including Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Lake Powell. There is always something to do, no matter what the season. People can go rock climbing and repelling in the warmer months, and snowboarding and skiing in the winter months. There is never enough time in the day for anyone to get bored in Cedar City.

    Food and Dining

Each student has the option of getting a meal card through the university's dining hall. Students can personalize that card exactly as they wish. They can put as little as five meals a week on their card, or as many as 21. This allows students the option of eating on campus for the meals that they would rather not cook for themselves. The dining hall is set up buffet style, so each meal is all you can eat. It serves healthy choices of food, including a salad and fruit bar. The options are endless and the taste is perfection!

    Dorm Life

Everyone knows that there is more to college than just libraries and classes. One of the most important things is the social life that you will be a part of when arriving at school. The dorms at Southern Utah University offer students many opportunities to make friends, to make memories, and to grow as individuals. There are many different options for housing. Students can live in apartment style dorms, traditional dorms, or even find apartments/houses that are off campus but still close to school.

    Academic Rigor

Just recently, SUU has added something to each students' graduation requirements, and that is that each student must participate in experiential learning in order to receive a degree. This guarantees that every enrolled student will spend time practicing their degree in their field of choice before graduating and applying for jobs. This makes Southern Utah University graduates so much more marketable. The programs and majors that SUU offers are outstanding, the passing rates are impeccable, and the job hiring numbers after graduation and through the roof.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are considering Southern Utah University then make it a point to come and visit campus. It is beautiful all year long. Come and meet your advisors, professors, and administrative figures. They truly care about giving you all of the information you need to help you make a decision as to where to go to college. If you are looking for a place where you can receive a great education, participate in fantastic activities, and discover more about yourself, SUU is the place to be.

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University has completely exceeded every expectation I had of what college would and should be. Through the experiential learning programs, small class sizes, and personal education I am receiving, I know that I could not have picked a better school. I am a T-Bird for life because of SUU!

Every year SUU sponsors a True T-bird night where people surround a statue known as Old Sorrel and you kiss at midnight to become a True T-bird.

    What to do for fun

There so many things to do for fun. Cedar City is a small town but big enough to do lots of things. There are lots of bonfires just outside of town. The mountains are very close to be able to drive and go hiking or camping. Zion National Park is about an hour or so away.

    Food and Dining

I don't know how the school's food is because I haven't had it but all the restaurants in Cedar City are pretty fantastic!

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dorm my first year of college and I loved it! The dorms give you a great opportunity to make lots of new friends.

    Academic Rigor

The first couple of years are pretty easy, there are a few hard classes. The closer you get to graduation the harder your classes usually get. However professors are always willing to help in any ways that you struggle.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and meet lots of new people. Also don't let roommates bring you down because chances are you won't ever see them again after your college life. Remember to make studying a priority but also make time to have some fun!

    In three sentences

This is has been such a fun place to be! I have had lots of new experiences and have grown in so many ways. This school is definitely a high quality school with great professors!

You can't walk under the clock tower until you graduate; a common spot for people to propose is by the waterfall area on the upper quad.

    Bang for the buck

It is a little expensive for Utah schools, but they have a good reputation, especially if you are going into any type of health care field.

    What to do for fun

There are 5 national parks close by, there are a lot of parks, and St. George (~45 minutes away) has a couple malls, activity centers, and a lot to do.

    Food and Dining

Cedar City has a lot of restaurants, though there are fairly few places to eat actually on campus.

    Dorm Life

They are decent, but in general I've heard more complaints about the dorms than positive comments.

    Academic Rigor

You will work hard at SUU, but you will learn the material, from what I've seen in my major and heard about in others.

    Tips for prospective students

Look at the course catalog and see if they have classes you're interested in, because it feels limited sometimes. I also recommend off-campus housing.

    In three sentences

I really like this school. They have a very diverse student body, and there is generally a lot to do. I feel I am learning a lot, and am definitely getting my money's worth by attending here.

The replica of the globe theater which holds plays for free and for a small fee too.

    Bang for the buck

It was the cheapest out of all of the other colleges I applied for.

    What to do for fun

There is an annual Shakespearean festival, a replica of the globe theater on campus, discount of movie tickets, ranches to ride horses, trails for hiking, a few shops to buy various things, and some quaint little restaurants to get to know and become your favorite places to eat.

    Food and Dining

There is an open cafeteria where it has the look and feel of a buffet. There are some good choices, but having your own mini fridge would be great too. You do have to sign up for the meal plan with the dorms. It was a little confusing on which to choose.

    Dorm Life

There are so many different options to choose from. Depending on how much you want to pay and how you want to live, there are dorms for everyone. You can be paired with someone who is going for the same major as you, which allows you to make a connection with your roommate.

    Academic Rigor

I do know there pre-med students have a very high acceptance rate into graduate school, which helped me make my decision. There are a lot of upper classes available to take to get you to push yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply before the priority deadline, it is much easier to get scholarships. Visit the campus before you make the decision on a college, because it could really help you decide between a few competing colleges. Ask what the college has to offer you, not what you can give them.

    In three sentences

This college is a great place to be because the area is beautiful, the staff really seems interested in helping each student succeed, all you have to do is ask for the help. There is a lot to offer when it comes to classes and majors, giving wiggle room to change your major if you choose. The atmosphere is just a wonderful place to be with a lot of different activities to do on and off campus.

    Campus Safety

This campus looks like a very safe one and I believe if you ever experienced a safety issue all you would have to do is tell an advisor and they would take all of the necessary steps to fix it.

    Greek Life

I do not know anything about the Greek life I am not involved in it and do not plan to be However it looks like they have a varied and accepting Greek life.

    Clubs and Activities

They have a ton of clubs and activities. They have something for everyone and there are so many I don't have enough hours in the day to join all the ones I want to. This is a great addition to any school.

Great for these types of students

The school is great for students who want to learn from the best while having fun doing it. This school doesn't seem like a party school which I like I take my school work seriously and don't want to waste my money on a party school. I also want to have fun and be involved in the school life which is exactly what SUU does.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Thunderbird Flight school is an unusual tradition but it seems like so much fun they have motivational speakers and food and all of this just for new and transfer students just to make us feel welcome.

    Bang for the buck

It is a little more than I am used to but it is however an out of state price for a University. Compared to other universities it is very cheap. And the service is outstanding. I cannot wait until I can experience the learning first hand.

    What to do for fun

Zion National Park is only about a half hour away and that is always fun. Saint George is very close as well and there is bowling alleys and movie theaters close by. Also the school itself has a lot of fun stuff such as a movie night and they have a Thunderbird flight school which is the week before school starts to help everyone get acclimated to the school life and meet each other etc. It seems like the whole experience will be fun and exciting.

    Food and Dining

Again have not even been to the school but they have a tom of restaurants on campus and they have a program where you can buy a food card and go eat at the school 3 times a day for a set price. That is very cool and convenient.

    Dorm Life

I have no idea what the dorm life is like here I will not be living in a dorm but I am sure from the other experiences i have had with them that the dorm life would be great, fun, and accepting.

    Academic Rigor

I have not attended any classes as of yet but they seem like they will be challenging as well as fun. I cannot wait to start my learning experience at SUU.

    Tips for prospective students

If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask! Some colleges do not care or know the answers however the people at SUU know all the answers and if they don't know an answer they will direct you to someone who does. They are there to help and love helping you so ask away!

    In three sentences

I absolutely love the advisors especially Scott Brueck, he has helped me out so much. Even though I have never been to the school I already feel like I belong. The website is very easy to navigate and I can always find what I am looking for.

    What to do for fun

There's so much to do around Cedar City. Your only a few hours away from about 10 national and state parks or forests. If outdoors isn't your thing there are all sorts of clubs and organizations on campus that plan fun activities for students to enjoy.

    Food and Dining

The dining center on campus has food that is personally served. The food itself is not bad. You would expect the food to look and taste like high school cafeteria food, but it's actually edible and rather enjoyable. The cafeteria does a themed dinner about twice a month where they make food for a holiday or event and theme the food. Those days are always really delicious and it's a fun time to hang out and eat something different with friends.

    Dorm Life

The dorms on campus on beautiful and well maintianed from what I can tell. I did not live in the dorms, but my friends that did said they are exceptional.

    Academic Rigor

SUU has good academics. The professors I have had so far were all extremely knowledgeable in their areas. Faculty and staff members often encourage you to sustain good study habits and to keep good grades. There is a lot of places and people around campus willing to help out if a student is struggling with course material.

    Tips for prospective students

For those thinking about attending Southern Utah University I would say to be prepared for classes where you get personal attention from professors and counselors. SUU has small enough class sizes that professors can find time to help you individually if you seek help.

    In three sentences

SUU is a great place to get involved around campus. There are tons of opportunities to join various clubs and organizations to broaden your experiences. SUU thrives to give every student a unique and worthwhile experience during their college years.

    Campus Safety

SUU takes campus safety very seriously. Our Maintenance, Safety and Security department has received many campus awards for their success in keeping campus secure and safe.

    Greek Life

Greek life is so fun! We have two national fraternities: Sigma Chi and Chi Phi. Sororities include Alpha Phi (national sorority) and Delta Psi Omega (unique to SUU). Greeks on campus hold a lot of social events and parties which are a lot of fun! They also do a lot of charity work to help out the university and the community

    Clubs and Activities

We literally have a club for EVERYBODY. We have many departmental clubs which help students educationally and also to get great experience and great jobs. But we also have many other just-for-fun clubs. We've got everything from a rodeo club to a juggling club to cooking and cuisine club to a club that gets together once a week just to watch movies and eat popcorn!

True Tbird Tradition (outdoor party where students hang out all night and then kiss someone at midnight until the clock stikes twelve to become a true Tbird) Old Main (first building ever built on campus, said to be haunted! very fun to explore) SUU campus houses the Utah Shakespearean Festival, one of the most prominent theater and performing arts festivals in the nation!!

    Bang for the buck

You'll get a top-notch university education for a great price! Especially if you're a Utah resident.

    What to do for fun

We have so many fun things to do on campus: sporting events, outdoor movies, and campus-wide parties and celebrations, theater and performing art productions, comedy nights, etc. We have tons of clubs and a really friendly student body! SUU is also centered right in the middle of the greatest part of Utah. Three national parks are just an hour's drive away from campus (Zion Ntnl Park, Bryce Ntnl Park, and Arches Ntnl Park) as well as many state parks. We have a really great outdoor recreation center that take students out and teaches them rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and offers a lot of outdoor overnight camping excursions!

    Food and Dining

We've got some really great places to eat on campus, and a couple really crappy ones. For the most part though the food ON campus is very decent and offered at a good price. We also have many burger joints, pizza parlors, cafes, ice cream shops and other restaurants located within walking distance of campus.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at SUU is really great! We've got really great dorm buildings (most of which are newly built, or newly rennovated)! The housing staff on campus goes above and beyond for all the students who live on campus, and host many activities for them. Students always rate the dorms very highly and love living on campus. You can walk to any classroom on campus in seven minutes or less from any dorm room on campus!

    Academic Rigor

Our professors at SUU believe in learning by doing. Our professors take the education of their students very seriously, but most also believe that students have to be engaged to learn. Classes are not read a textbook and take a test; professors at SUU find fun ways to teach their students, and often take them out into the field so they can get real-world experience. Because of this, most students at SUU think classes are fairly easy.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students: COME TOUR OUR CAMPUS! We have a good time, all the time! Any student can fit in here at SUU, we have something for everyone! All you need to do is come check it out for yourself!

    In three sentences

SUU students, staff, and faculty have got great spirit. This university will provide you with a fun and intimate experience that will get you prepared for your future. My favorite thing about SUU is that every professor I've ever had (and there have been many) know my name and have given me personal help if I've ever needed it.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition at SUU is reasonable, but who wouldn't like a little more bang for their buck? SUU is more reasonable than most other institutions and less than some.

    What to do for fun

SUU has a club or organization for just about every interest. Some of the clubs and organizations I am personally involved in include drum club, Sigma Tau Delta, Arabic Club, Multicultural Club, and Graphic Design Club.

    Food and Dining

SUU offers a variety of healthy meal options and snack choices. The prices are competitive and the prices reasonable.

    Dorm Life

I have no experience in this area, but my fellow students rate the dorms as adequate.

    Academic Rigor

The curriculum is challenging and all majors require a significant amount of classes in other disciplines. This system provides a balanced education and gives the student a more stable platform from which to launch a career.

    Tips for prospective students

Research your options. Talk with students currently in your field of study. Don't ever sell yourself short.

This is an excellent school, you should definitely give it a shot.

    In three sentences

The small class sizes allow for excellent one on one attention with the professors. The quality of education received far exceeds the amount of money spent on tuition. Faculty and staff are always willing to help you reach your own goals if you put in the effort needed.

There are emegency polls located all over the campus in case something happens. The polls notify the police, and it is said that they will be there in less than two minutes. Pretty good if you ask me.

    Bang for the buck

Nobody likes to pay for education, but everybody has to make money somehow.

    What to do for fun

There are tons of Hikes all over the place here. just south of here is Zions National Park and St. George. Just North of here is Brianhead, which is a ski resort.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers push you to do your best. They want you to try and answer the questions before you go in and beg them for the answer. Its not high school.

    Tips for prospective students

SUU is a great school. If you are looking to get away to a smaller town and be away from your parents, this is a good place. it teaches you to be independent.

    What to do for fun

You can always get involved in the fraternities or clubs here on campus. But, what I really suggest is becoming a leader on one of the leadership organizations we have here on campus such as SUUSA. They always keep you productively busy and all have organizations on campus have a lot of fun.

    Food and Dining

The dining options are filled with variety for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the food all tastes great. On a side note, they also cook everything with as much olive oil as possible so they do get very healthly choices in the cafeteria.

    Dorm Life

I live in the Honors Hall, so everyone is usually procrastinating on their homework in my hall. It's usually dead in my hall, but I have seen many other halls and the dorm living is much more lively so you will not be dissapointed.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are challenging, however, if you put forth the effort you will be able to succeed. I'm currently involved everday in 4 different organizations on campus and I still manage to maintain a 3.7 GPA, if I just work hard enough.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a student seeking to go in to medical school or nursing school later in life, I would highly recommend choosing this school as its passing rates are phenomenal.

    In three sentences

The teaching staff are the most dedicated individuals I have ever met and I really feel like my education matters to them. There are so many things to do on campus, if you look for them of course, that you will never feel alone or bored. The campus, city, and the community is absolutely beautiful.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who enjoy being on a campus where there is a small enough campus that you know alot of people but a large enough campus where you meet someone new every day. Also, great for students who want a balance between having an academic life and social life.

The dorms are beautiful, they are right on campus. The RA's makes sure everyone is happy and everyone has a chance to meet everyone on the floor and even meet new people on different floors.

Southern Utah University wants students to learn. Learn so they can apply what they have learned to achieve all that they want. Their main goal is to have a balance between Academic life and social life. I feel very safe walking to and from my classes everyday. Even late at night I feel fine. To get into the dorms, you need to swipe your student ID card.

    Clubs and Activities

SUU has tons of different clubs, you just have to find the ones that fit you.

Great for these types of students

    Music, Drama, Dance, and others.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a tradition of the bell tower. At flight school, where they introduce the incoming freshman to the school, there is a tradition of walking under the bell tower and shaking hands with the President of the university. You are NOT to go under the bell tower after that. The next time you will be walking under will be at graduation. Another tradition is becoming a true t-bird. At homecoming you touch a specific statue and kiss someone, then you become a true t-bird. Another isn't really a tradition, it's just something cool. On a full moon a ghost will appear in the window of the oldest building on campus if you stand in the right spot.

    Bang for the buck

I am able to afford it with financial aid. If you are a music major then you have to pay separately for private lessons, they aren't covered in the block tuition. Other than that, it is worth what you are paying for.

    What to do for fun

There is always stuff going on at SUU. The Shakespearean festival is on-campus and students can buy a season pass for $35, they just have to go that day to see if there are any more tickets available. I saw a couple of performances a few weeks ago and they were amazing. There are also movie theaters around, one of them plays older movies for cheap. SUU students get special discounts all around town.

    Food and Dining

I've only eaten at the cafeteria once. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't the greatest. They have lots of options, but they usually have the same options according to one of my friends with a meal plan.

    Dorm Life

I love my dorm. At SUU there are different types of dorm according to how you want to live. I live in an apartment-style dorm with a full kitchen and a living room. I love it. I makes it really feel like home. The other dorms have two rooms and with two people in each that share one bathroom. It is more social. Everyone hangs out in the halls so everyone on your floor you get to know very well.

    Academic Rigor

My classes are not too hard to understand. The teachers are great; but you do have to study and take notes just like in any other college.

    Tips for prospective students

Chose a school that fits your specific needs. Southern Utah University has a very good music and theater programs. Do your research before chosing a school.

    In three sentences

The teacher really care about your success and they want to get to know you personally. They are always open for communication and are flexible for study help, even if they can't help you they will help you find a tutor that can. The music department is excellent.

Nothing to really worry about in Cedar City. Sometimes, it can get a little creepy at night because it is so quiet you have to look over your shoulder. Just remember normal campus safety procedures and everything should be fine.

    Greek Life

The Greek Life is basically non existant. We have sororities and fraternities but I never heard of them outside of Utah. There are no Deltas, Kappas, Omegas, AKAs,etc.

    Clubs and Activities

Various clubs and activities are offered to students attending SUU. I highly recommend every new student to join a club if you want to socialize and feel like you belong at SUU.

    What to do for fun

Play outside! Since SUU is located in Cedar City there isn't a night life besides the occasional/seasonal dances. But, there are a lot of opportunities to engage in healthy activities: hiking, ultimate frisbee, fairs, rugby, etc.

    Food and Dining

I did not buy a meal plan and was able to cook all of my food in the dorm. However, I went to eat in the dining area twice and the food was mediocre to poor.

    Dorm Life

I highly advise anyone who is not Mormon or coming out of state to live off campus! It will save you approximately 500 dollars which can be used to help you pay for tuition, groceries, etc.

    Academic Rigor

The professors here know the subject they are teaching extensively. Never be afraid to go to professors during their office hours! A lot of study groups get together and discuss the topics in class, etc. Also, tutors can be utilized free of charge.

Research Southern Utah early. Apply early for Financial Aide also be aware that if you are an out of state student FAFSA will not cover all your financial needs. Apply for scholarships early in December and be aware that you may have to take out loans to pay for school. Even than all your financial needs may not be covered.

There is a ghost in the Old Main building. On full moons you can stand out front of the building and see her in the window. We also have True T-Bird night. This is the weekend of Homecoming and you find a person and stand on or touch the special statue, then when midnight strikes you kiss them.

    What to do for fun

Me and my friends go out on the town all the time and have made quite the habit of visiting Deny's at random hours of the night on the weekends. There is something always going on at the school though and the little movie theater on main street shows movies for $2 on special nights if you have your student ID. There is always something to do here.

    Food and Dining

While SUU is surrounded by a ton of great restaurants, the cafeteria, T-Bird Circle is pretty good as well. Getting a meal plan was one of the best decision I made because not only does it get you into the cafeteria it also gives you 'Dining Dollars' which can be used at the restaurants and stores in the Student Center.

    Dorm Life

I live in Stratford and have friends who live in Eccles and Cedar. I love housing. We have floor game nights and activities all the time and the RA's are so helpful.

SUU has a student security force that patrols campus after peak class hours to assure campus security for night classes and night activities. There is also a small on-campus police department. Throughout campus there are several emergency centers so anyone who needs help can get it at the emergency center.

    Greek Life

I know there are sororities and fraternities here, but don't know which ones or anything about them.

    Clubs and Activities

The school offers lots of clubs and activities. Football and basketball games are always publicized on campus and are free for students to go to. Its really easy to get involved on campus, but at the same time, if you don't want to get involved, there's nothing that says you have to.

Great for these types of students

SUU is great for students that love the outdoors, the open spaces, and living in small towns. Students that are looking to have fun while going to school should definitely consider SUU.

    Bang for the buck

SUU is the least expensive University in the state of Utah. It offers tons of programs and the tuition you pay for the education you get can't be beat by any other school in the state.

    What to do for fun

I'm an outdoors person so I like to spend my free time in the mountains in the truck or on the motorcycle exploring the mountain roads and trails. There is camping close by in the pine trees. There is tons of open space out west of town that has trails crisscrossing all over the place. People go out there and have bonfires and explore all the time.

    Food and Dining

SUU has an amazing on campus diner. I've eaten there and its really good food at a reasonable price. The price can be lowered with a meal card too which gives you more bang for your buck.

    Dorm Life

Personally, I haven't lived in the dorms because I'm married. I have been in them and I wouldn't call them dorms. They're more like an indoor community of friends and neighbors.

    Academic Rigor

I wouldn't say the classes at SUU are hard, but they are challenging enough to teach something to everyone.

    Tips for prospective students

Come to SUU with an open mind. The teachers and professors here know their stuff, but the only way anyone can learn is with an open mind that is willing to learn and grow.

    In three sentences

SUU is a great school in a great location. The summers are warm and the winters are cold, but its close to St. George, Utah, which is much warmer than Cedar City. The best part about the school is that its really easy to get involved on campus.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria has cafeteria food, but it has a decent variety. They have quiznos and other food stores on campus that are good but a little expensive.

    Dorm Life

In the education department, it is not hard, but you can get a lot out of it. They focus on real-life stuff. Other departments, like Chemistry, are challenging. Tips for prospective students

There are a lot of clubs, it just takes work to branch out and join. The activities are fun.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to go to a four year university but not to a school where the class size is over 50 people should go here. The class sizes are fairly small and the campus is beautiful.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a tradition of not walking under a clock tower until you graduate. You walk under it when you enter school and back the other way when you graduate.

    Bang for the buck

This school is great! Great professors and students. It's just a great place.

    What to do for fun

There are movie theaters and dances happening all the time. There's a ski resort nearby. There is also a place for cliff jumping, about an hour away from campus.

    Food and Dining

The campus food at the beginning was great but as the semester continued, it got worse. The food was cafeteria food.

    Dorm Life

The on campus housing is amazing. There's really no dorm life, it's more like apartments. The atmosphere is great.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are great and hard. Teachers and great and they know how to talk about their subject. Pay attention and passing is easy.

    Tips for prospective students

Meet your professors outside of the classroom and get to know them and let them know who you are. Stay involved on campus. Don't be afraid to talk to new people.

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University is a surprisingly diverse campus. There is always something going on and there are always new people to meet. The campus is also beautiful.

The Clock Tower - During Welcome Week, all Freshmen walk East towards the sunrise under the clock tower, representing the rise of your time at SUU. The rest of the time you are there, you are not allowed to walk under it again. On graduation, part of the ceremonial walk is walking West towards the sunset under the Tower, representing the end of your time at SUU. True T-Bird Night - Homecoming weekend, gather around Old Sorrel with your love and kiss them at midnight. It comes with free chapstick and mints to make the experience magic!

    Bang for the buck

    Small school, personalized experience.

    What to do for fun

Fun thins to do in Cedar City include SUU activities, shopping, movies, coffee dates, food, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, canyoneering, and more. The campus is 45 minutes away from St. George and 1.5 hours away from Las Vegas.

    Food and Dining

Going into college, you shouldn't expect fine dining. However, the food is still really good!

    Dorm Life

One word: fantastic. The dorms give you an opportunity to make so many close friends.it is very family-like. RAs are your friend and love their jobs. The dorms give such a great experience.

    Academic Rigor

With the smaller class sizes, the professors know everyone's name. Though attendance is not necessarily mandatory, many professors include it in your grade. Essays are tough and so are tests.

    Tips for prospective students

Come in with an open mind, the next few years will be the best of your life if you are open to meeting new people and stepping out of your comfort zone. The activities put on here allow for personal growth and the growth of friendships. College is so different from high school. Do not expect busy work, be prepared to write more essays and study more.

    In three sentences

SUU is a school where you can truly personalize your own experience. The small campus allows you to build relationships, connections, references, and memories. This school has a great reputation academically and is a steal cost-wise,

    Bang for the buck

An amazing deal! Voted by Princeton as one of the best bang for the buck.

    What to do for fun

There is, surprisingly, a lot to do in Cedar. From hiking to skiing, movie theaters to bowling. You;ll never be bored.

    Food and Dining

I love eating at the dining hall, the food is delicious and it is a great time to socialize.

    Dorm Life

I love living on campus! You meet life long friends and always find ways to be involved.

    Academic Rigor

It's college. So of course it is challenging but if you stay on top of the work it is extremely doable.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved, really make the most of your college experience but make sure school is your top priority.

    In three sentences

This is an amazing school. It is the best in the west. Great value and a great education.

    Campus Safety

I have always felt safe on campus. SUU has a system where they text you if there is an emergency on campus, which is really helpful. You never have questions about what is going on, and I always see officers around campus somewhere. SUU also has emergency phone poles all over campus incase you need someone stat.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs on campus, it's ridiculous. There is literally something for EVERYONE. SUU offers a club website to keep up with clubs on campus as well.

Great for these types of students

Definitely recommended for art students and psychology majors. If you are a theatre major, make sure you love Shakespeare or else you'll really feel out of place. SUU does a few contemporary and modern pieces too, but Shakespeare is a huge deal in Utah. There are a ton of religious (mostly Mormon) and international students, so variety is a little null here. SUU is a great school, just be prepared to live in Pleasantville for awhile. If you are a student who is willing to work hard, go for your goals, and not let other people push you down, SUU is great; SUU has a wonderful education to offer if you're willing to work for it and prove yourself. Hard work DOES pay off.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every Halloween, the SUU Theatre Department has the Shakesfear haunted tour, which is awesome to go with a group of friends.

    Bang for the buck

If you can get a scholarship/loan or plan on being a resident of Utah, totally worth it. If you are paying for tuition straight out of pocket without financial help: forget it. SUU offers a great educational experience, but every year they are raising the price of tuition because students are leaving for religious reasons or whatever their plans are. Apply for scholarships early, and really get yourself out there for financial aid. SUU is worth it, as long as you have the means to pay for it.

    What to do for fun

The arts (both performing and visual) are huge at this campus. There is always a show, gallery, event, whatever to go to. There is always something to do. The SUU website offers a calendar to keep up with campus events and activities, which is really nice. SUU really tries to make the students feel welcome.

    Food and Dining

The food on campus isn't the best, but hey, it's something to eat. There are a lot of options and they're trying to implement better tasting food, but it's campus, it's not going to get much better than it already is. It's not awful, but if you have the option to bring a home made lunch or go to Taco Bell, do that instead.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms, but I do live off campus. If you're looking for an apartment or home, get one fast! A good place to live is hard to find out here, they disappear left and right because of students moving in. And be sure to really check out where you'll be living; there are drug dealers and weirdos living in Cedar City, too.

    Academic Rigor

You will hear a LOT of students complain about how hard SUU classes are. They're not, people just like to complain and be lazy. Come to the school to get work done, and party/play/socialize later. Yes, you will have to write a ton of essays and study your butt off, but it's worth it. Your professors (in my experience) are here to challenge you and to make you use your intelligence; don't be afraid to ask questions and get the help you want.

    Tips for prospective students

Really research your major. Get to know your professors and people involved in your program BEFORE you get here. I highly recommend taking a tour by yourself (not with the other SUU students or leaders) to explore on your own and talk one on one with faculty, other students, etc. Also, the whole T-bird Flight school orientation is lame and forced. As a transfer student, I hated it; I felt like I was shoved into a chaotic mess of screaming 18-year-olds. Beware of the EDGE program, take the opportunity to do something awesome. Don't make blankets like fifty other people in your class will want to do.

    In three sentences

SUU is a great school, if you really take advantage of your time here and the opportunities given to you. This is YOUR education, don't let anyone else tell you what it needs to be. Make your own choices and this is a wonderful school to be at. :)

Southern Utah University is such an amazing college. Dorm life is great and I have met so many wonderful people and life long friends. Even though Cedar City is a small town, you can always find something to do and have fun doing it. The campus is the perfect size and it is not too far to walk anywhere. Also, classes are small enough that you can always interact with the professors and ask them questions. Everyone is so friendly and it is such a great environment. I recently became a member of Alpha Phi and it was the best decision. I made so many friends and I know I can always go to them if I need someone to talk to. I have had the best time at Southern Utah University and I hope everyone can get the same great experience.

    Am learning a lot

The professors at SUU are great. I have learned so much from them and continue to learn more. They are always willing to help and answer questions.

SUU is fantastic, especially for those students who are leaving home for the first time. That was one reason I came here and it is been so fun, everyone here has made me feel like I am truly connected and that I belong here.

    Am enjoying being here

There is almost always something big going on here. I am never bored and it is always so exciting here.

    Am learning a lot

I absolutely love it here at SUU! It is the cutest little town and the campus is the perfect size. It is big enough so that you can always find something to do here, but small enough that you can run into your friends on campus.

Great for these types of students

SUU is perfect for those who want to work hard, play hard, and have fun, but are a little nervous about going to a large university. SUU has many great clubs, sports teams, and various degrees, plus it is not a ridiculously large school.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for classes as soon as possible-the fun and important classes, as well as desirable class times, fill up very quickly.

    Bang for the buck

SUU isn't cheap, but they have very clean and modernized faculties, a high-quality staff, fun student activities, and expansive, beautiful grounds.

Great for these types of students

Athletics are great here and it is easy to get involved. Academics here are great and they give good scholarships for hard working students. If you love service, the Community Engagement Center here always has amazing projects that need volunteers; I get to do about 12+ hours of service a week here. Those that are looking to be leaders, there are many opportunities here for that!

    Tips for prospective students

Come and take a campus tour! When I applied here I had never heard of this college until I began looking for applications. I took campus tours of all the colleges I applied for and Southern Utah University stood out so far above the rest that there was no question as to where I was going to go.

    Bang for the buck

I came here with a great scholarship and with the money I made over the summer I am going to school right now with no loans and I don't even have a job! They are great about scholarships and tuition is still way cheap as well! My friends here who are from all over the country came here because out-of-state tuition here was still cheaper than in-state-tuition at home! If that doesn't convince you I don't know what will!

    Am enjoying being here

I couldn't ask for a better time. The college has to much to offer! I personally spend many days a week at the Community Engagement Center or in other organizations! It is so easy here to get involved! My parents are always shocked to hear the new things I have gotten involved with. Leadership opportunities are easy here if you just keep your eyes open.

    Am learning a lot

This college is amazing! I have so enjoyed my time here and I would recommend it to anyone! My classes are very small and I feel comfortable asking questions in class. My professors, although they have many classes, know my name! I have really learned a lot here and I feel very involved in the classroom. Consider SUU!!

    Greek Life

Greek Life is accessible and outgoing. Greek students are outgoing and inviting people. They help each other and others out.

Great for these types of students

Outgoing people who love meeting new people and getting involved will absolutely love it! It is so easy to get involved and there is always something to do on campus. Also, for students who like the outdoors, hiking, climbing, hunting, camping, etc.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have true T-Bird on homecoming night. At midnight whoever wants to become a 'true T-Bird' goes to a statue thats on campus and finds someone to kiss at midnight. Also, we have a clock tower and students first year at orientation they walk under the tower, and they don't walk under it again until graduation day and you walk under it as a class.

    What to do for fun

Cedar City is the perfect place for outdoor adventure. There are so many hikes and parks when it's not cold. We have a great P.E. building, and most everything is free for students. We have a ski resort not too far during the winter.

    Food and Dining

I have not heard great things about the cafeteria food. I've never ate their personally, but most people say it's the same food over and over again.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in the dorms, but students who have that I've talked to loved the atmosphere and made friends fast.

    Academic Rigor

It depends on what classes a student takes, but most majors are rigorous enough to keep you busy and learning, but definitely doable.

    Tips for prospective students

Get out of your comfort zone and make as many friends as you can. Don't try to take every class or join every club, you'll feel overwhelmed. Stay caught up on homework, don't procrastinate. Enjoy the ride!

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University is small enough that it's not overwhelming. The people who work for the school are very helpful and always ready for questions. Southern Utah University is a fun and exciting atmosphere and always trying to improve.

    Tips for prospective students

Use the resources offered! If you have a question, contact your personal admissions counselor, mine has always been incredibly helpful. Actually, everyone I've contacted at SUU has been great, so don't be nervous, they want to help you! Also, make sure you apply to things by the deadlines, don't procrastinate, because it's not fun to miss a deadline (but if you do, still contact the school, they might make an acception).

    In three sentences

SUU has been incredibly warm and helpful as I look into it and try to decide if it's the right school for me. While some of the other schools I'm looking into make me feel like I'm just a number, SUU makes me actually feel important and wanted. It seems like with the smaller class sizes and school, the meaningful attention extends even after school starts.

    In three sentences

Overall a fairly good education program. I feel that some of the teachers are not very good or care too much about the students, many do care though. This school spends money frivolously on things they do not need and then we pay the price in tuition and less jobs offered from SUU.

    Campus Safety

Because Cedar City is so small with a deep influence of the LDS church, safety on the campus and throughout the city is extremely high. Very low crime rates. No need to worry here.

    Greek Life

As I said before, small, not your typical greek life. You do gain life long friendships and brothers/sisters. I will never regret going greek at SUU. Sigma Nu!!

    Clubs and Activities

The greek life at SUU is very small. It is not your typical campus when it comes to fraternities and sororities. Parties are minimal. Community service is high. New active members range from 10-25 a semester. I see greeks as a whole being wiped from the university in the near future unfortunately though. Get in one while you can!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

True T-Bird night is always fun. Ask a girl to come with you to the statue on campus and kiss at midnight to become a True T-Bird. It is just a fun little tradition they have every year.

    Bang for the buck

Southern Utah University has a relatively low tuition. They do, however, nickle and dime you for everything. Fees go up every year. Tuition increased more than any school in Utah last year. And as they increase tuition and fees, they spend money where it shouldn't be spent. As I said before, if you are an art major, you will have a great experience here. As for other majors, not a lot of money is placed in your majors budget.

    What to do for fun

The only way to stay sane in Cedar City is to stay busy. Get a cheap season pass to Brian Head(even if you dont know how to ski/snowboarded), join a greek organization, play intramural sports, rock climb, take trips to St. George and Las Vegas, ect. Just stay busy because Cedar City can really get boring!

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is AMAZING at first. By the end of the first semester, however, you realize they only make the same things over and over again and you start to get sick of it. You also are forced to pay a pretty penny if you are living in the dorms. However, if you decide to move out of campus, you realize how beneficial the Cafeteria was. No cooking. No cleaning. Good food.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at Southern Utah University is enjoyable. The lounges on each floor are common for social gatherings. There is always a group of people watching TV, playing on the sand volleyball court, or taking a trip up to Brian Head Ski Resort. Very social, very clean, very fun.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on what your major is, the academics at Southern Utah University can be easy or intense. The nursing program is top of the line, but you will definitely work for it. The CAD program, however, is relatively easy and does not require very much studying.

    Tips for prospective students

Fight hard for what you want here. If you enjoy partying, definitely not the schoolt to attend. Go to class and communicate with your teachers to get your full moneys worth. For the most part the teachers love to work with you and always have office hours if you have any questions.

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University is a very art-oriented school. If you are LDS, enjoy cold winters, and cheap education, this small town school is perfect for you. Average academics, nice dorms, and a small greek influence.

During the winter times they have a ski resort near by up in Brian Head so thats really cool if your into that or if you have never tried. They have a lot of National Parks around Cedar City so theres always something to do. If your 21+ Vegas is only an hr and half away which is AWESOME!!

    Food and Dining

They have a couple of food courts on campus their really nice and delicous!

    Dorm Life

I have not stayed in the dorms, I was a transfer from ASU. So I wouldn't know.

    Academic Rigor

Best in the West with academic ratings so without a doubt you shall be fine.

    Food and Dining

There could be more options. We used to have a Starbucks but the Mexican joint is just as welcome.

    Dorm Life

From what I've heard it's clean, monitored, and safe. We just got a new dorm last semester as well.

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

    Bang for the buck

It's super cheap in comparison to most universities and the education recieved is really wonderful.

    What to do for fun

Heritage Center and Shakespeare Festival for productions. Zion National Park, Three Peaks and Kolob for your outdoor activities. other than that it's all about Walmart and the bowling alley.

    Food and Dining

The actual school dining isn't great since it's expensive and most people feel that they don't get enough nutrients from it. The food has upgraded quite a bit in the community with a Sonny Boys, Krave, Lupita's, Chili's and a lot of the usual chain locations. they have a Lin's and a couple other grocery stores aside from Walmart.

    Dorm Life

The dorms is great if you want to meet people but it's pricey and the quality of the buildings is very low considering you can put a ding in the wall by just bumping it with a chair. All the newest housing is very clean.

    Academic Rigor

SUU has a very historic past. The people of Cedar City wanted a college and they sacrificed much to bring that dream to pass. They had obtained some funding from the State, but had to begin building by a certain date which was in the dead of winter. With the help of a horse named Old Sorrel who led the way through harsh weather and extremely deep snow, the towns people were able to make their way up Cedar Mountain to obtain the lumber to begin construction before the deadline. There is a memorial statue on campus dedicated to Old Sorrell and the people of Cedar City who made the existence of SUU a reality. I am proud to be from one of the families that sacrificed for that cause.

    Bang for the buck

SUU has one of the most beautiful Campus' I have ever seen. Along with renovated historic buildings it provides state of the art facilities. SUU is nestled in a valley surrounded by mountain and trees. Within an hour or less you will find skiing, State and National Parks (Bryce, Zions etc.), hiking and biking. Lake Powell and Las Vegas are approximately 2 hours away by car.

    What to do for fun

Because the campus is smaller, the students are very involved and there are many activities.

Thought the variety can sometimes be limited, Chartwell's catering does not lack in quality. Their side fast food restaurants also make it nice to grab a quick meal on the way back from class rather than a sit-down dining.

    Dorm Life

I absolutely love the dorms here. They offer a variety with simple living quarters with beds and bathrooms or the more apartment like environments where you can cook your own meals and lounge in your own living room. The dorms are also subdivided into communities where students can be organized in to apartments and floors based on their interests. This enables students to get to know like-minded peers and take part in activities the clubs and schools might not otherwise offer on off-campus living situations.

Do NOT live in on campus housing. The price is beyond ridiculous and you are paying way to much to share a room, or an apartment with 5 other people. There are plenty of apartment places that are near the school.

    In three sentences

SUU has a beyond beautiful campus, and it is small enough to walk around it easily. Professors are kind and class sizes are moderate. I have loved learning here and enjoy the school.

    Campus Safety

The campus has its own police force dedicated to keeping the grounds safe. They are extremely effective at their job.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year the incoming freshmen, led by the university president, walk under the Carillion bell tower from east to west to signify their beginning at SUU. It's considered taboo to walk under the bell tower at all until your graduation day, on which you will walk back under the tower from west to east to signify your success at SUU. On the Friday night of Homecoming week, we hold an event called True T-Bird Night at a statue of the horse, called Old Sorrell, that led his team through the snow in order to build the university. On True T-Bird night, you and some other person kiss at midnight and become a true t-bird. I know it sounds cheesy, but it's a great way to connect and have fun.

    What to do for fun

Perhaps the greatest thing about SUU is its close proximity to Utah's national parks, state parks, and ski resorts. All year round, there is more than enough things to occupy your time. If the outdoors isn't your thing, club activities and your standard city attractions can keep you busy, too.

    Food and Dining

This campus has a plethora of great food choices that are as healthy as you want them to be (within reason). With a cafeteria-like dining center supplied with buffets of delicious foods in addition to individual restaurants within the student center, the variety of choices can even be overwhelming.

    Dorm Life

From what I've heard, living in the dorms is great if you love the social scene or if you're wanting to explore what's out there. The dorms are divided by learning communities, surrounding you with like-minded people who share the same passions and interests as you. This is huge, especially in your first semester.

    Academic Rigor

While there are some classes that are a total snooze-fest, there are countless others that entice students to think critically and study independently in order to be successful. Honors courses are especially good at challenging our brains.

    Tips for prospective students

Although your classes need to be your first priority, SUU makes a concerted effort to provide its students with opportunities to connect with each other and build long-lasting relationships. Take advantage!

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University is an international destination for good reason. Its breathtaking surroundings and stellar education keep students active, involved, and invested in their education and future. The small college community atmosphere fosters a sense of safety and success.

True T-bird= On Homecoming night at midnight, students gather at the main statue on campus. There they have mints and chapstick, and at midnight you kiss someone while touching the statue, and you become a true tbird! Bell Tower= The first week of freshman year, you walk under a bell tower and its a big celebration, since you are new at the school. The rule is that you can't walk under the bell tower again until graduation night, when there is another big celebration in honor of you!

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria food isn't the greatest, but it isn't terrible food. I don't think the meal plan is worth the food that you get, but it is a fun social place to see friends and enjoy a meal with people that you like to see! I loved going to the cafeteria just so I could go meet new people.

    Dorm Life

I did not live in the dorms, but from what I've heard the dorms are a nice place to live. The dorms are fairly new and the rooms are nice and spacious. If you have a hard time making friends, the dorms are a great way to meet a bunch of people very quick!

    Academic Rigor

I have only been taking general education courses so far, but I have found these classes to be challenging but not too difficult. If you study and communicate with the professor, it is easy to succeed in each class you take.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should go tour campus and set up an appointment to have a student give them a tour of the university. The students that give tours really know what they are talking about, and everything they say about the school is true. When I was a prospective student, my tour guide really influenced my decision of going to this school because of the success and happiness she found at the university.

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University is an amazing university that really focuses on the success of its students. The small class size gives professors a chance to really get to know their students, which allows them to help each student one-on-one. From great clubs, to planned social experiences, SUU really knows how to make each student feel welcome and excited about their college experience.

    Campus Safety

There are campus police constantly strolling the walkways. There are cameras and surveillance, and there are also emergency stations placed all around campus. It is not very big, and all in all is a very safe place.

    Greek Life

Yes, even SUU has sororities and fraternities. There are plenty, and if you desire to join one, that won't be a problem in the least.

    Clubs and Activities

There are plenty of clubs and activities, and they are extremely fun and enjoyable! However, it is hard to learn when and where these activities are.

Great for these types of students

SUU is great for any student. It has such a wide variety of people that fitting in isn't really a problem.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have a tradition called True T-Bird Night. On this night, students gather around the statue of Old Sorrel at the front of the school. At midnight, you grab a partner and lay a big kiss on them. Then, you are a true T-Bird!! We also have the Haunting of Old Main. Back when our oldest building was built, a girl was murdered. She is said to have burned the original building to the ground. They say that if you go to Old Main on the full moon and look into the tallest window at midnight, the ghost of Old Main will be standing there watching you.

    Bang for the buck

For the quality of education here, the price is phenomenal. I am extremely content with the prices, and as long as you have a good financial plan, struggling for money won't be a problem.

    What to do for fun

There is almost always something going on at SUU. I really like to play intramural sports for fun. There are also a lot of clubs to sign up for. SUUSA, our student association, also keeps up plenty of activities so that we never get bored. There is also plenty of field room here to gather up some friends and go play around in the parks!

    Food and Dining

I have a meal plan. The dining hall does a great job in providing a lot of options and different varieties of food. They also serve a lot of drinks, and dessert is provided as well. The dining area is clean and well kept, and the workers are very friendly.

    Dorm Life

I do like dorm life. My roommates are a blast and I am right across the street from the school so I don't have to drive anywhere. However, it feels like living in a hotel, and there are far too many rules for my taste.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers are very focused on giving their students a quality education. I know my professors on a first-name basis, and they all take the time to hear what I have to say. I am getting smarter every day.

    Tips for prospective students

Register early. Since it is a smaller school, the general education classes are gobbled up as soon as they are available. Don't procrastinate!!

    In three sentences

This school is amazing. I love the professors, the campus, the classes, and the friends I have made. I definitely give it a 10/10.

Carter Carillon: When a student begins their education at SUU they walk beneath the 76-foot tall bell tower heading east and are asked to not walk beneath it again till they graduate. When students graduate the formal processional line walks beneath it, heading west toward the setting sun, symbolizing an end of an era.

    What to do for fun

Cedar City is full of activities during all the seasons. They range from snowboarding, skiing, rock climbing, hiking, and so much more.

    Food and Dining

Food is great but can get expensive if you eat in the cafeteria all the time.

I've always felt safe on campus and never felt threated to be there

    Bang for the buck

Any school is going to cost money and I think SUU is worth it. It gives students the chance to fully experience college life and get a quality education.

    What to do for fun

The school puts on activities, different clubs have performances and activities you can be a part of. Of course sporting events are always a fun time. Also Cedar City is very much recreational and gives students the opportunity to do things outside like hiking, also Brian Head Ski Resort isn't too far away so students take advantage of that during the winter months to go skiing and snowboarding.

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

It is a quality University with quality professors and quality learning.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of the college experience. Most students attending SUU are living away from home so you have the chance to meet lots of people, participate in activities, support sporting events and join clubs. Take advantage of all the resources offered also such as the tutoring center, academic advising, etc.

    In three sentences

Southern Utah University is a great place to go to school. You will receive a quality education here with small class sizes and individualized attention. Also the community is small and supportive giving you a chance to volunteer and find opportunities to participate in school activities.

Out of state tuition can be a little pricy but if you love Utah and plan on staying in the state, obtain residency so that you can gain residency tuition status. It saves you a big chunk of money. But even with out of state tuition, SUU is totally worth it. Coming to SUU has to be one of the best decisions I've made. The professors give you one-on-one attention because the class sizes are pretty small. They are also here to teach students because they want them to succeed and they are willing to be there to help you if you have any questions.

    What to do for fun

Bowling, movies, hiking, bonfires, sports, school activities, etc. There is always something to do here in Cedar City. Local groups do activities throughout the semester and students can get free admission to the school plays, sports events, and events. True t-bird night (an SUU tradition) is held every year and it never disappoints. There are tons of things do here and it doesn't take very long to get to where you need to be because it is a smaller town.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall has ok food, but there are a few food vendors on campus as well as student stores to provide on-the-go snacks.

    Dorm Life

Although I don't live in the dorms here at SUU, I have friends that do. I've heard nothing but great things about dorm life here. A lot of friendships form in the dorms and they are really nice inside and very close to campus.

    Academic Rigor

Sometimes going to class early in the morning is hard, but the professors are understanding. They have excellent backgrounds in their subjects of teaching and they are there to make sure you understand what you need to be successful. I feel like I am learning what I came here to learn. The school is so diverse and it provides many different areas of study.

    Tips for prospective students

One of the traditions is to walk under the bell tower when you first arrive at SUU as a freshman or transfer student, symbolic of entering your new journey. When you are graduating, you walk under the bell tower from the opposite direction symbolic of your time at the college setting like the dun, but you are starting on your path to new horizons! The original building called Old Main is said to be haunted.

    What to do for fun

There are tons of activites going on all the time. The Shakespeare Festival is fantastic! Lots of games to go to as well as other events.

    Food and Dining

Excellent food for all tastes and diet types. Plenty of food options in the food court, or stop by the little convenient stores on campus.

The classes are not too easy, not to hard. Just enough to keep you occupied. But do not take O-chem, that's the hardest one.

    Tips for prospective students

Religion is very important to some people here so they will ask you a lot about your religion (if you are not Mormon), however, they are very nice. Go to all the games! It does not cost that much ($5 tops) and it enhances your experience. Try new things, if you are not Mormon (like me), try going to a LDS church service once, see if you like it, if you don't, it still helps you to understand what your friends are talking about (religion is the topic of many conversations).
