Categories Comments Great for these types of students ANY girl who wishes to positively matriculate into an educated, determined, positive woman aspiring to change tomorrow's society into a better one.
Tips for prospective students STAY ON TOP OF YOUR WORK...develop appropriate personal relationships w/ your professors, if need be...GO OUT...get familiar and involved with the community (the AUC)...it's scary @ first, but you'll always have your sisters for support & encouragement...LOVE YOUR SPELMAN/AUC SISTERS/CLARK & MOREHOUSE BROTHERS...these girls & boys will be ones in which you will grow life-long relationships with...it's a wonderful experience...MAKE GOOD CHOICES...boys...partying...just be an adult... Overall Lesson: Change the misconception of African American Youth (particularly young women) through kind words, intelligent banter, and common civility- Spelman College offers all of these advantages to those who seek them. Consider Spelman College based upon an aspiration to discover an institute where your ability to serve others is just as important as your academic record...where your search of a special venue is validated where learning is a passion, not just another formality. At Spelman College, you wish dwell in a location where you are simply not only a student body member, but a cherished member of society, a place where you are an individual, and not a number. Spelman College is a place where your desire is not purely to improve oneself, but rather improve the world.
Bang for the buck It's EXPENSIVE...but well worth it...to afford it, just keep on top...better yet, AHEAD, of your scholarship searches and info...you'll make it just fine...

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Spelman is an all girl school, but the the others college around is not, so their are boys around Moorehouse is next door. You will be given a big brother to help you. their are alot of fun things to do. The stores are in walking distant, and the martar or train in right there.
Tips for prospective students Listen to that you are told to do get along with people alway ask for help when need, and enjoy school. College is not like High School, Make your class where you come control the time. If you have work study make sure you be there or no who to report to so you will not got the bad schedule.
Bang for the buck I work for the work study, the job I did I did not the time schedule. I was given Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm 4 day a week. That gave me no time for myself or to go out if I want to go some where. I do not stay out late at night.
Am enjoying being here not only did I enjoy my teachers, I enjoyed meet the students and other staff. I was on my owe for the first time and felt like and grown up. The adult tread me like one. I had responsibility.
Am learning a lot from Spelman I would love to stay here. I need help getting my tuition money. I am now applying for Scholarships and Grant money to Help my parent.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This is a great school for students who would love to further their education by excelling in academics. While in a wonderful atmosphere with fascinating student organizations and wonderful opportunities. I highly recommend attending Spelman College.
Tips for prospective students Spelman is an illustrious world renowned institution know for producing women who change the world. This is an excellent liberal arts school. It is located in the heart of Atlanta surrounded by Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University. Spelman is a part of the Atlanta University Center. As a part of the AUC you can enroll in classes at all three institutions.
Bang for the buck Spelman College is an expensive school. I believe it is worth every dollar. I am attending Spelman on financial aid, grants, and scholarships. Make sure that you apply for every single scholarship and grant that you are eligible for, because paying for college can be stressful at times.
Am enjoying being here I love Spelman and everything that it stands for. I choose Spelman because it is the right school for me. When choosing a college make sure that is matches with you and what you are trying to accomplish in life. If that school can help you towards accomplishing your goals then it's a match!
Am learning a lot Yes, I am receiving a well rounded education and experience. This is the perfect institution to receive an excellent education and gain a lifetime of experiences.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Women who want to become strong, liberated, and desire a sisterhood rather than a school where all u do is attend classes and go home! Please come here if you want to make history and be apart of a legacy!
Tips for prospective students PLEASE look for scholarships in advance and do not hesitate to ask your department and your scholarship advisor about institutional scholarships that they don't tell you about beforehand. Also, do community service your senior year and apply to be a Bonner Scholar because it will pay your tuition in FULL!
Bang for the buck Spelman is VERY VERY VERY expensive because it is a Historically Black College and it is a private institution for women. With all of this, many of the scholarship searching is left up to each individual student herself :'(
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying every minute here at Spelman! The friends I have made will be my lifetime friends of mine! If I hadn't attended this school I wouldn't be the woman I am today. I have learned how to handle important financial and academic issues on my own. I have learned how to network with many professionals and students alike who have told me about different opportunities whether it be internships or simply advice! I even received an internship in the animation department at Turner Broadcasting Studios just by word of mouth around campus that led me to inquire about an interview! Every moment at Spelman and in Atlanta will be worthwhile!
Am learning a lot All of the faculty members are surprisingly top rank in their career fields! Most of my professors have Doctorates in their profession and they all will give the students valuable one on one time!!!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students The Spelman sisterhood bonds are life long and will be the best experiences you will probably have in your life. Enjoy it and stay positive, don't focus on the parties and boys, stay focused and pray that you are able to stay all 4 years and graduate. I really look forward to a Spelman graduation since I've never seen one before. Come to Spelman, you won't regret it and hopefully we'll meet when you arrive!
Tips for prospective students Be open to new experiences and new people. You will be living in close quarters so be very respectful of others and their space and you'll be fine. The RA's there to assist you with any issues you may have, so call them when you need them.
Bang for the buck It's no secret that Spelman is expensive, but my family just keep praying and applying for any financial assistance we can, and thank God I'll be returning another year..
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying being at Spelman. I have a great Morehouse brother, who is very supportive and available for any assistance I may need. He's very respectful of me and I really like that. I have met some great women at Spelman and great men at Morehouse. Spelman's campus has alot to offer like the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art museum, market friday's, computer access, great guess speakers, financial assistance, and so much more.
Am learning a lot I am learning more than education here but also life lessons. My course work is challenging but very rewarding. I have learned more about black history this past year, especially about black women than ever before. I never learned about black history in any of my previous schools. Spelman's history is so rich and consuming, it makes me very proud to be an African American. My English professor passed away suddenly this past year and that was very upsetting, but my sister's and I found comfort in each other and helped each other make it through a difficult time. Now I know the saying,Here today gone tomorrow, is no exaggeration. I feel blessed to have met her. I am very proud to be a student at Spelman.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students who are looking for a small, all female, institution with a cultural experience. Some of the most popular majors are political science, economics and biology. Lastly, those students who want to change the world, starting with themselves and the things in their periphery.
Tips for prospective students Spelman college is an all female, historically black college. Not only does this mean you will gain a deeper understanding of yourself, but you will make the conscious decision to change the world. As with many colleges and universities, there are temptations on may different levels. This four years of experience will be some of the best years in your life; do not get involved in anything that goes against your beliefs and your judgment. Survival in college is about discipline and remaining true to yourself and your morals. Times will be challenging and you may ask yourself, Is this all worth it. That is what sets everyone apart from one another; what are you willing to do and sacrifice?
Bang for the buck Spelman college is somewhat expensive and there are times when I do not know if my tuition is fully covered for the semester. However, I receive enrichment in all aspects of my life here. Thirty six thousand dollars is definitely sufficient for all that is obtained during matriculation at the illustrious Spelman College.
Am enjoying being here Being at a historically black college, I am receiving an experience of a lifetime accompanied by cultural aspects. Everyday is truly something different; there is never a dull moment. I am learning more about myself as I embark on this Spelman journey. I would not rather be anywhere else than where I am at this very moment.
Am learning a lot I graduated from a public high school in Poughkeepsie, New York where there is a seventeen year, forty-three percent graduation rate. Therefore, I felt a though I was not academically challenged. Throughout my matriculation at Spelman College, I have learned more in a semester than I have learned in a year in New York. The work is somewhat challenging, but it is well worth the knowledge attained.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students -Strong minded/ outspoken -Dedicated/ determined -Goal oriented -Future successful women -Leaders -Confident -Slightly lost and confused like every first year college student -In search for family figures/ bonding -Knowledge seeking
Tips for prospective students DO YOUR RESEARCH! I for one did not attend Spel-Bound (although i did visit the school prior to the application process and enrollment) and I regretted not being able to form that bond with my sisters before classes started. Don't slack and wait around for scholarships to hit you in the face, grants to fall out of the sky, or for your parents to simply put the money on the table (more power to you if your parents have that option). Speaking from personal experience, I wish that I had taken the financial process more seriously, as to avoid confusion and stress later on throughout my school year. Spelman, because of it's location in Atlanta and in reference to other schools, is a great opportunity for networking and amazing memories. I for one can write a four page list of memories and I'm only entering my second semester this month.
Bang for the buck Many people (including myself) complain about the cost of attendance at Spelman. However, it is important to keep in mind the rankings (#1 HBCU in the nation, as well as being compared to Ivy League schools), opportunities (many jobs available after graduation), and experience. At the end of the day, that is what you're paying for; the experience. It is rare that the bonding within a college (with two bordering colleges, Morehouse and Clark Atlanta University), lively constant activities, sororities, prosperous organizations and all around genuine fun and relaxation are a given when applying to a school. With that said, I would be willing to pay any amount to continue my stay at Spelman College (just stay up on your scholarships!)
Am enjoying being here Atlanta is a long way from home (15hrs driving and 2.5 hrs flying). Although it is considered a metropolitan area, Atlanta is nowhere as fast paced as the cities in New York that I am used to (i.e. Manhattan and the Bronx). For this reason, I have found myself becoming more relaxed, as I do not feel rushed and constantly on-the-go (though I do stay on the ball when it comes to class work). Plus the weather is way warmer than I'm used to and the advantage of being in a metropolitan area such as Atlanta is always a plus.
Am learning a lot from Spelman college, not only academically, but socially and spiritually about myself that i did not know prior to my enrollment last fall. Courses required for Spelman women that are not required, let alone applicable at other institutions, have taught me a lot about the culture of my ancestors, therefore providing a greater basis of where we as African American women have come from

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Spelman is an all-girls school, and at first it was a huge challenge to be around all girls because most of my friends at home are boys. You definitely make friends with the girls in your dorm and in your classes, but Morehouse, Jazman's Cafe, and Clark Atlanta are right next door if you need a break.
Tips for prospective students Don't have tunnel vision when applying for colleges. Keep your mind open to every possibility. Remember you're going to be basically living at your college choice for the next four years.
Bang for the buck I've had to make quite a few financial decisions and sacrifices in order to attend. I'm constanly having to look up scholarships and paying internships because I am trying to go through my undergrad without any loans.
Am enjoying being here I love being apart of the AUC; you meet new people from every part of the world literally everyday. Atlanta has so many different things to do and so many opportunities for young people. It's truly a one of a kind experience.
Am learning a lot The professors are beyond outstanding and you can tell they thoroughly enjoy what they're teaching. I love how some of the classes are designed specifically for students of color.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Considering Spelman College is an all female, historically black college, the type of people is obvious. However, many students who are not black apply and do attend. Many students participate in domestic exchange with Spelman and love the experience. I highly encourage it.
Tips for prospective students Stay in touch with the financial aid office on a weekly basis. My classmates and I have done that and found scholarships that helped out with books and travel
Bang for the buck Though it was difficult to get scholarships as an individual, Spelman helped significantly with my academic scholarship for half tuition
Am enjoying being here The people I meet make the experience even better. All the social events around campus and in Atlanta make we want to stay there
Am learning a lot I am definitely getting the education I want. All of my professors have been helpful in providing assistance and even recommendations for scholarships

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Spelman is a historically black liberal arts college for women. It is perfect for African American women who want to receive the best education possible. Spelman stresses the importance of strong black women in society.
Tips for prospective students For prospective students, the best advice is to take advantage all that Spelman offers. Always be ahead of the game when it comes to academics and financial aid.
Bang for the buck Spelman is expensive, but has a lot to offer students. They include domestic exchange, study abroad programs, going green efforts, and so much more.
Am enjoying being here I love being in around people who treat me like family. From staff, faculty, and students, its a home away from home.
Am learning a lot I am learning in different ways being at a liberal arts college for women. I am learning to be a free thinking woman!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Spelman has one of the most secure campuses that I've ever witnessed. We are gated and have 24/7 campus security, who treat each of us like their daughters. They are a wonderful group of people and the majority have military and or police force experience. Next to quality education, safety is the most important thing stressed here at Spelman. I always love returning to my pearly gates, I definitely feel very safe here.
Greek Life Spelman College is home to all of the Divine Nine sororities, including AKA, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta. In addition we house Sigma Gamma Rho and Tau Beta Sigma.
Clubs and Activities Spelman offers a number of extracurriculars, including professional organizations. The only downside to Spelman, is if you are an athlete. We are a Division III school, and the focus here is predominantly academics. However, a fair number of students participate in sports here. We offer soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, cross country, volleyball and softball.
Great for these types of students There is no particular model of Spelmanite, you will find all types of women here. However, Spelman stresses academic excellence more than anything and there are certain limitations placed on those looking to pursue college sports on a very competitive level. Furthermore, as a liberal arts institution those who are intensely invested in a technology or scientific field are somewhat limited by course offerings on campus; however, you can still take classes at the neighboring Georgia Tech or Georgia State Universities in addition to Clark Atlanta or Morehouse.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Spelman has a white dress, tradition which plays an important role with your induction ceremony as a first-year student and also at the end of your time here at Spelman as it is worn under your graduation gown. Also following the end of new student orientation Spelman and Morehouse come together in Kings Chapel, and after the ceremony freshmen are paired off and you receive a Morehouse brother.
Bang for the buck A Spelman education is a great investment, offering you a wonderful network and access to a wide variety of internship and job offers. Furthermore, Spelman offers many unique experiences from on campus recruiting to wonderful mentors comprised of both faculty and alumnae. However, all this does cost so make sure to apply for scholarships. Spelman provides some financial aid, but for the most part you should look to outside sources as well.
What to do for fun One thing every Spelman student knows is that there is never a shortage of things to do. Not only is your student email constantly getting flooded with on campus activities and events, but there are a number of things to do in the greater surrounding Atlanta area. First-years are not allowed cars, but typically that year you will learn to navigate the MARTA, a public transportation system for the immediate Atlanta area. There is a wonderful little outdoor mall (accessible via MARTA) called Atlantic Station, that offers dinning options, shopping, and a Regal Cinema movie theater. And of course there are always things going on within the Atlanta-University Center college community i.e. Clark Atlanta, Morehouse and Spelman.
Food and Dining Overall, Spelman offers the typical college dinning experience, buffet style, average food with a variety of options, that is sometimes extraordinarily good, but oftentimes rather basic. You won't starve, but it's not typically that home-cooked feel, either. The Caf closes at 8pm, but we do have The Grill as another dinning option which currently closes at 10:30pm and offers better food, but less variety. If you're a late eater you'll find yourself ordering delivery from one of the numerous options within the surrounding area.
Dorm Life As a first-year (freshmen) you will reside in one of four dorms (similar to the four houses from the Harry Potter franchise), each dorm has a very distinct personality and their own Greek letters. In addition, there are a number of first-year only events and activities centered around dorm life to get the new students acquainted to campus life and the surrounding campuses. You are required to live on campus first and second year unless you can provide a valid excuse for why you must live off campus.
Academic Rigor Classes vary in rigor falling within the traditional confines of a liberal arts education. All of the classical liberal arts majors are offered in addition to STEM programs i.e. biology, psychology, chemistry, mathematics, bio-chemistry and computer science. We also offer a dual-degree engineering program. Professors are usually very helpful and want you to visit them (during posted office hours). You will have small classes here at Spelman, the largest course you will have during your matriculation here is around 60 students, and that is a mandatory first-year lecture course.
Tips for prospective students If you are invited to attend Spel-Bound make sure to participate, it gives you an inside look at life here at Spelman much more in-depth than a regular campus tour. You stay with a current student, get a feel for campus life, accompany us to classes, etc. It's a wonderful program, and those admitted students who are debating if Spelman is for them usually commit after Spel-Bound.
In three sentences Spelman College is a private, independent, historically black liberal arts women's college, although men from Morehouse and Clark Atlanta University take courses here. There is much diversity here at Spelman, although from the outside it may not appear that way. Women who are going somewhere start at Spelman, it's a wonderful learning environment and a great launching pad into the professional world.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Young women who want to make an impact on the world. Who are willing to take risk, and can handle all types of challenges. Women who can think for themselves and who have a passion for knowledge .
Tips for prospective students Make sure you are a well rounded student. Spelman looks for young motivated and free thinking young women, who want to impact the environment around them. Get involved in community service, working part time jobs, take on advance placement classes, and make sure your essay for admissions is very strong.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Study and use all of your resources on campus. Your freshman year is very important and you dont want to slack off one bit.
Am enjoying being here I am very involved ,but I have a balance in my school work. There are so many things to get involved in on campus you just make sure you do not overwhelm yourself. You will have plenty of big sisters that are willing to help you in your academics so you can succeed.
Am learning a lot Spelman is very rigorous, since I am a science major I do not have as much freedom as others. The professors are willing to help in many ways so do not be afraid to ask them for help. My best study habit is to work with a group. There is so ,much information you need to learn study habits so you can do well in school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is top notch. Being that we are an all women's college, campus security makes sure we are locked down, they also come as soon as you call no matter the issue. There's no doubt in my mind that I would ever feel unsafe on this campus.
Greek Life I am not a part of a Greek organization but it is fun to watch them compete and stroll around campus. They are very close knit.
Clubs and Activities There is a club or organization thats fits EVERYONE! and if we don't have you are allowed to make your own. They represent every state, island, country in the world. You won't ever feel like you do not fit or feel out of place. There a fair at the the beginning of every semester for you to find out what you like in different organizations and you easily meet new people.
Great for these types of students If you are independent, disciplined, organized and out-going, and like a small campus then this is the school for you. Really its great for almost anyone. The campus is so relaxed and open to new things that its easy to adjust or to find your way.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus If you attend here it is an absolute must that you have a white dress, neutral stockings, black heels, pump or flats, black skirt or pant suit and a blue collar shirt. You will need them for various ceremonies and events in which everyone will be required to attend.
Bang for the buck The school is extremely expensive so make sure you apply for as many scholarships as possible. It is worth the money.
What to do for fun Well we are in Atlanta so there is a lot to do malls, six flags, art exhibits, football games not to mention interaction with students from Ga state, Ga tech, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta students. As far as around campus they hold events almost everyday of the week for students whether it be a movie night, ice skating etc. There is also events on Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College campus.
Food and Dining The food is excellent for the first month then it becomes a little repetitive as with any college. There are plenty of options as far as food choices that cater to everyones needs. There is also a grille that serves close to fast food it can be a little expensive, or you can buy and cook your own food. Cafe workers are very nice and lenient.
Dorm Life The dorm life is not as bad as people make it seem. Spelman is working to remodel the four oldest dorms because they have no a/c system. The other five are are up to par and you get to meet a lot of new people. There are study lounges and computer labs. There are community showers on each hall and the rooms are a little small unless you have a single bedroom.
Academic Rigor The courses are very challenging especially if you are in the technology, science or mathematics majors. They require major studying, reading and writing. In the STEM fields, a lot of the professors are foreign so you have to really pay close attention to what they are saying. In the end you will be more prepared for graduate education or your future career. It is worth the challenge.
Tips for prospective students Come in with the discipline and mindset that you are there to get a degree because it is very easy to get distracted with outside things. Be prepared to read, write and study at least 20-30 hours a week. Form bonds with professors and academic personnel because you will absolutely need it to get through.
In three sentences Academically it is very challenging and very expensive. The campus atmosphere and social setting is amazing because everything is convenient and the administrators and students are willing to help if you are in need. Overall it is worth coming here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety could be better and they've made efforts to ensure that Spelman students are safe. It's a slightly different story once you go beyond the Spelman gates. Make sure you travel in groups.
Greek Life Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho are the main ones.
Clubs and Activities Bonner community service, sororities, and clubs for almost every major.
Great for these types of students Spelman is ideal for young women who desire a strong academic challenge, have good study habits and are focused on academic excellence at a small campus in the midst of the many distractions that surround them.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are so many because Spelman is rich in tradition but a few are Olive Branch, Homecoming, Founders Week and the infamous step shows.
Bang for the buck Spelman College is a private institution higher learning. Make sure you have enough in your aid package to cover at least the high tuition with enough scholarship money to cover everything else. I'm in my senior year and it's been tough financially. However, my decision to be a Spelman woman was the best decision for me. The name alone is worth the cost.
What to do for fun There is so much to do at Spelman besides studying. For fun, we usually go to the malls or movies. There is always a party or concert nearby so there are many options in Atlanta. They don't call it the dirty south for nothing.
Food and Dining The food is great especially on soul food Wednesday!
Dorm Life Dorm life isn't the best but it's not the worst. For your Freshman year plan to bring two fans to attempt to cool off in the dorms with no air conditioning.
Academic Rigor Spelman classes aren't for the weak student, but are challenging enough to make to think and provide thought provoking input in those classes. The faculty is tops in the country and are there to help you through your matriculation through Spelman.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that it's your decision to attend Spelman and not anyone elses. Do your research and also do a campus tour. Lastly, focus on high academic achievement and community service in high school.
In three sentences Spelman College is by far the leader in academic excellence for women. My choice to attend Spelman was well thought out. I believe that Spelman has enhanced my desire to learn and my drive to change the world through my future career in education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety They are very tight on that.
Greek Life Never say what you want to join out loud. You always just keep it to yourself and trusted friends in a secluded area...yeah it's that serious. But the Greek Life appears fun, you cannot join until sophomore year.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of clubs that will open doors for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus That you will have to come to Spelbound and see for yourself. I don't want to ruin it for you!
What to do for fun If your the party type then you will get easily adjusted here lol. There are many clubs and organizations that do their own things such as poetry clubs spoken word, sororities and their events and many more. You can never be bored. Also community service can be fun as well as having chats with your roommates or going shopping downtown
Food and Dining Food is awesome the first week but after eating it everyday I kind of got tired of it, as well did most people. But this is Atlanta and there are many places such as papa johns various Chinese restaurants that do delivery so you will be okay. Oh And we have Fried chicken Wednesday (Heavenly) and Fish Fridays (Awesome) which its impossible to miss.
Dorm Life Here the dorm you live in is taken seriously lol Not to the point where your choice in friends are limited but as a freshman when you come, the love people show for each dorm is fun and makes you love it even more! The RA's here are very friendly and may even become your best friend! its also easy to make friends here especially in your own dorm. people really just walk up n down down trying to meet everybody. Some halls will have no air conditioning but if you have a personalized fan as I do than you should be good. The dorm that does have air conditioning is LLC I and II
Academic Rigor Study EVERY DAY. You never know what will take up your studying time in the future. Professors here are very sociable and enjoy getting to know their students. so make sure you make that connection. Work may seem like a lot and very hard but if you get involved in discussions and don't hesitate to ask questions. It'll be no problem. Also take advantage of the professor's office hours.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you get to know a lot of people around here ESPECIALLY TEACHERS because they will have some beneficial info that could line you up with an internship in your field or introduce you to programs that will just make those reading your resume` melt! Also if there's any perfect time to join clubs and organizations it would most definitely be FRESHMAN YEAR! Many opportunities will be flying your way don't let them pass you by! Also don't make the mistake of getting involved in too many things (Spreading yourself too thin).
In three sentences If you're a tad bit shy and haven't just found your voice yet, Spelman is the right choice for you. Spelman is a sisterhood that is completely amazing. There are great programs here as well as staff that help to guide you on the path to becoming a successfully matured woman in the world.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Spelman College is great for young women who want a nuturing enviornment in a school thats not too big but not too small either. You will be afforded many opportunities by attending Spelman College.
Tips for prospective students Some tips for prospective students would have to be : 1.) STAY ON TOP OF YOUR WORK. Deadlines sneak up on you sometimes but it is VERY important to meet them because this is a skill you will need in life, and this affects your grades and credibility as a student. 2.) Definitely search for scholarships because if you start here you will certainly want to finish in four years with the least amount of debt possible 3.) Participate. By Participating in student organizations and volunteering for different things you meet lots of new people who have the same interests as you. You can build long lasting friendships as well.
Bang for the buck Spelman does indeed come with a hefty price tag, but in the long run you will be prepared to go out into the world and become successful at whatever you decide to pursue.
Am enjoying being here I am enjoying my time at Spelman College. The AUC experience (Atlanta University Center) is unique and exciting as well, here you will meet all types of new people and build long lasting relationships. You will create many memories here that will last a lifetime guaranteed.
Am learning a lot You will learn at any college or university you go to but the learning experience you get a Spelman College is one of a kind. There are various tools to help you succeed academically as well as socially. There are many academic programs to assist in course work as well as many student organizations to join.

Categories Comments Campus Safety public safety at spelman is every where! they take their jobs seriously and even ride around the area from the school to the different marta staions and areas that students go to. there are shuttles that take students to the close marta stations and the library. there is also a spelman van that you can call to pick you up from spelman and take you to the library or marta station.
Greek Life we have most of the major historically black sororities such as akas, deltas, and zetas. we even have a band sorority and a community service sorority.
Clubs and Activities there are plenty of activities especially on friday, there is market friday, where vendors come and sell their merchandise, some of the stuff is really nice. there are plenty of clubs including clubs for your major, foreign language clubs, environmental clubs, career clubs, etc.
Great for these types of students people who do not mind doing the work to get the great grade because sometimes the work can become overwhelming. make sure you have friends and family as your support group.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus we have the spelman graduate's arch that you cannot walk under until your graduation. we also have a rule that you shouldn't take shortcuts through the grass because that's like taking shortcuts through life.
Bang for the buck spelman is a private school, meaning it is super expensive. you are lucky to receive a scholarship from spelman but don't let that deter you from coming, look for a lot of outside scholarships and federal grants and loans are available...
What to do for fun go to poetry jams in kilgore which is actually on morehouse's campus right next door, go to atlantic station or wherever and watch movies and walk around the malls, and we go on many walking adventures to familiarize ourselves with the area and what is around us.
Food and Dining if you like chicken this is the caf for you. they have fried chicken, baked chicken, chicken and rice, grilled chicken, honey glazed chicken, sesame chicken, etc. chicken is the main dish mostly every day. when aj johnson came back to spelman a few months ago, she influenced the new part of the cafeteria, the fab 500 line which have some great options every now and then and the meals are always 500 calories or less. there is also a deli sandwich line, a stir-fry line, a pasta line, and pizza and burgers are there if you don't want anything else.
Dorm Life the dorms are so much fun. i recommend staying on campus at least first and second year because you meet so many of your sisters and form life-long bonds with them quickly. i stayed in abby and i am close to mostly everyone who stayed in the dorm and both of my current roommates stayed in abby too!
Academic Rigor depending on which major you decide to take up, the rigor can increase or decrease depending on how much of an expert you are in the subjects.
Tips for prospective students visit spelman and do a day or weekend program like a day in the life or spel-bound. some of my spelman sisters said they only came to spelman because they loved spel-bound so much.
In three sentences spelman is a wonderful school with many great opportunities that many do not know about. make sure you network with your professors, your financial aid advisors/scholarship coordinators, and the career offices.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This educational facility is the perfect place for ladies who want to make the Choice to Change the World. For those who aspire to be successful women and seek an environment filled with sisterhood, community service, social networking, and solid education while in the process of doing so, this is the school for you!
Tips for prospective students For those Spelmanites planning to attend Spelman College in the years to come, I recommend that you apply during the early decision period. Also, in order to fully prepare yourself for all that Spelman has to offer, and to ensure that this is the school for you, I suggest first attending the A Day In Your Life At Spelman program and, once accepted, the Spel-Bound program.
Bang for the buck Although tuition may seem to cost a pretty penny, the money is worth it once students arrive. The teaching methods are great. The Public Safety system is superb. And, all other accommodations are what makes the school a ivy league historically black college.
Am enjoying being here As a native Texan, being at school in Georgia is far from my usual comfort zone. However, the unified mutualism of sisterhood is ubiquitous; thus suppressing my feeling of homesickness and replacing it with enjoyment.
Am learning a lot Spelman College is a very prestigious school with a superior legacy that I am blessed to now be a part of. There are many eduactional opprtunities to take advantage of, both in and out of the classroom. We have many majors to choose from and the extracurricular activities make the Spelman Experience even more enjoyable. In my short time here so far, as a first-time freshman, I have already learned a lot about the virtues that the school seeks to instill in each of it's students. Among those include, the importance and initiation of sisterhood, service, and higher education.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for students who are looking for a school filled with great pride, legacy, and numerous networking opportunities.
Tips for prospective students Spelman is a college built on tradtion and history. In saying that be prepared to be expected to know the school's history as well as hymn. It will also save you some trouble if you realize ahead of time that the freshman dorms not having air conditioning does not mean that the school is cheap or using all of your tuition money elsewhere but that is it part of tradition and the freshman experience that every Spelman woman must go through.
Bang for the buck Spelman College is very expensive with it increasing every year. On the bright side the college brings in a lot of scholarship oppurtuinites and donations. Even if you are not one of the lucky ones hopefully you were made very good connections while networking throughout your Spelman career and will be able to obtain a very good job when you graduate. The high cost comes from the prestigious name that comes along with being able to call yourself a Spelman woman and what society has seen a Spelman one to represent.
Am enjoying being here Life of a Spelmanite is a college experience like no other. From freshamn week to graduation day it is a unique experience that you will not fins anywhere else. Although it is an all girls school you experience the sister/brotherhood with the all male school, Morehouse College. SpelHouse work together in many campus activities and programs including homecoming for a unique experience that brings out alumni and current students.
Am learning a lot I am absolutely loving my Spelman experience. Spelman is a small private liberal arts college which means small class size. The small classes actually do allow you to really get to know your professors and they also get to know you which comes in handy when it is time to ask for recommendation letters for summer programs. I have also found many of the professors to be very flexible when it comes to their office hours to fit your class schedule.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Spelman is great for students who love a challenge and can handle a challenge. If you step on campus and love it, it may be for you. It also may not be so make sure you attend a class, talk to professors, AND YOUR ROOMMATE before you come and you should be fine.
Tips for prospective students The number one thing is to get outside scholarships! You also need to be best friend's with the ladies of the financial aid department and of course talk to your advisor! That's a big one. Many people don't talk to their advisors and when graduation time comes, they can't get their diploma because they didn't complete the requirements and/or didn't have enough credits to graduate :(...Also attend the Spel-Bound program! That is what drove some of my friends here! It's a program for accepted students to follow a hostess, live in the dorms, and attend classes. It's really a great opportunity to get a mini Spelman experience.
Bang for the buck I would say Spelman is very good academically. We are the number one HBCU and have been for years. One thing I hate is that the millions of dollars that the college receives is not going into many scholarships for students and many students have to drop out because it's so hard.
Am enjoying being here I love it here and have ever since my first visit to Spelman on a college tour in 8th grade! It's full of sisterly love, nurturing faculty and students, and plus Morehouse is two steps away ;) (that is the college my boyfriend attends). You also get Morehouse brothers your first year here and get a chance to develop strictly brotherly relationships with him and may even date his friend (like I did :)-we have been together for 1 year and a half).
Am learning a lot I love that the professors here actually care about you and most of them will not let you fail. Also talking to other students hooked me up with the best professors. Use your resources, they are so plentiful.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you are a strong, willed, and determined young woman of the future, then Spelman College is yourn castle! Here you will become stronger, smarter, braver queen than you ever could imagine!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you study, because this is still an institution. Professors are extremely helpful, so do not be afraid to make a few relationships in the departments as well. There is never a dull moment, and events are always popping off. Just make sure you know how to dicipline yourself, and you will have the greatest time of your life, i can promise you that!
Bang for the buck Yes, Spelman college is expensive, but the money wont mean anything to you once you walk through those proud gates.
Am enjoying being here There is absolutely without a doubt NO PLACE like the AUC.(Atlanta universitty center) The events, and the relationships you will build here will inspire you to grow in civility and heart. I've never in my life witnessed such an awesome bonding experience!
Am learning a lot At Spelman college you experience a journey of learning that no other institute can offer. Not only do they teach you how to stand strong academically, but they provide you with the tools to learn more about who you are and how you can contribute to make a difference.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Woman that are open to broadening their mind. Also woman that like taking advantage of opportunities because Spelman creates alot of them for you. They flood your email with so many internships and scholarship opportunities.
Tips for prospective students Make sure when writing your application essay you let the college know that you really want to be there. Also if you get accepted dont be scared. Spelman is a place where women from all over the country, the world even come to experience the Spelman way. Making friends is easier than most would think because your freshman year is going to be the best.
Bang for the buck Yes the tuition is alot but it is worth every penny. The relationships and knowledge you gain from being a Spelman woman are priceless. You receiving top of the line teaching from some of the most passionate and experienced professors many of which love the the subjects they teach and go the extra mile to study and live what they believe in.
Am enjoying being here I love being on campus everyone is different and everyone is special in their own way. Spelman takes the extra effort to make sure the students have a great time on campus. They even have an organization that is designed to do just that, plan fun stuff on campus for the students. Whether is a movie night or even free mani and pedi's during homecoming for all the students.
Am learning a lot The advanced education that you get at Spelman is beyond extraordinary. They motivate you to strive for the best and they also not only educate you on college curricular but on the knowledge of how to grow as a woman. Spelman Colleges moto is A Choice to Change the World. They enrich their students on the importance of making this world a better place by going above and beyond for the greater good.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Spelman has great security on the campus each person is checked to see who they are before entering the campus. The Security guards are so good that by the first week of school they have learned all of the new students faces.
Great for these types of students Spelman is great for students who are want to go to an HBCU that has a lot of traditions. It is much more of a quiet community with a small number of students in each class. This school is perfect for students who want to feel more than just another face in a sea of students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The most unusual tradition on campus is the white dress ceremony. This is when all those who have been admitted to Spelman College come together for a special ceremony to listen to music, have inspirational speeches, and get pinned.
What to do for fun Because Spelman College is located in Atlanta there are always things to do. Whatever you enjoy doing there is something for you to do around the city.
Food and Dining Spelman, to me, has the most food options for healthy eaters that I have ever seen at a college. The dinning hall server salads, soups, and comfort food. In the other place to eat known as the underground they server fast food. So at spelman college there is food for everyone.
Dorm Life I did not stay in the dorms because I lived so close to the campus. If a student lives within a certain mileage of the college you can opt out of staying in the dorm if you want.
Academic Rigor The course work is not easy, I am a biology major and the professors make you work hard however they are always there to lend a helping hand. The course work may be hard but, it is designed to keep you involved and up to date with modern times.
Tips for prospective students If you are thinking about attending Spelman College talk to the faculty, meet some of the students both there now and those who have graduated, and talk with those in administration. Schedule a tour of the school with your family and ask the student guide as many questions about the school as possible. Lastly be sure to look at what Spelman requires for new students.
In three sentences I would say Spelman College is an excellent school for those who want to further their education in a historically black college. The atmosphere is wonderful and professors are always there to help both with school and other things.

Categories Comments Campus Safety spelman is a gated community and we have campus security patrolling 24 hours a day 7 days a week. it is honestly the safest campus i have ever seen.
What to do for fun atlanta in general is such a fun city. students attending spelman have something to do about 90 percent of the time. there are alot of places to visit, malls to shop in, greek activities to go to, stroll sessions to watch and just bonding with your spelman sisters or your morehouse brothers.
Food and Dining the food at spelman is sub-par. there is no restaurants on campus, the grill cost extra and the cafeteria closes early. again this is not a reason not to attend the school. you are attending for education and not proper nourishment.
Dorm Life the residence halls at spelman college are not ideal. you do not have air conditioning, you can not have refrigerators, you share a very small space and you have a lot of rules. honestly its not a reason to not attend the college though. if you are attending college for a dorm room you have a very small thought process.
Academic Rigor spelman expects academic excellence from every last one of its students. with that being said, achieving academic excellence at spelman is no small feat. the classes are very difficult and it is very time consuming.
Tips for prospective students any student that wants to attend the illustrious spelman college needs to understand that it is not an academically easy school. they also need to understand that spelman gives very little scholarships so most likely they will be taking out loans. my final tip would be that never let anything deter you from your goals. if your dream is to go to spelman make sure that happens because you only get one opportunity to go to college.
In three sentences spelman college is an awesome academic experience for anyone that is lucky enough to be excepted. the staff really wants to see the students succeed and a lot of the people are very assiduous individuals.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Public safety does their very best to make sure that all students feel safe. They may seem strict but only because they have your best interests in mind.
Clubs and Activities Although it is a private institution there are a variety of clubs that you can join at Spelman. There is glee club, french club, psychology club, and many more. Spelman College has a few sports teams such as tennis, basketball, softball, and soccer. And if you don't want to play a sport but would still like to work out there are several exercise classes available (zumba, kickboxing, yoga, swimming, etc), or you can just work out by yourself at your own pace in Read Hall. Throughout the school year there are many campus events and show to keep you entertained, just don't let them distract from your studies!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are several traditions at Spelman college, one that you become familiar with is the tradition of the white dress. As incoming freshman the first time you wear your white dress is during orientation week during, then later on during the school year on founder's day. On Founder's Day the freshmen and the seniors (wearing their white dresses underneath their cap and gowns) walk to sister's chapel and view the founder's day ceremony. The final time wearing you wear your white dress will be as you walk across that stage a Spelman graduate. There are a few more traditions but you'll learn of them when you get here!
Bang for the buck Spelman is an expensive school, but if you come here with a serious attitude and willing to succeed, by the time you reach the end of this journey it will have been worth it.
What to do for fun Spelman is part of the AUC, Atlanta university Center, so even if there may not be any thing going on on campus, there could be activities over at Morehouse or Clark Atlanta University. At Morehouse on Wednesdays they have Hump Wednesday, and Spelman had Market Friday on Fridays. And the Spelman group P.O.S.S.E is always working to have fun events on campus. Also coming here gives you a chance to explore the city of Atlanta as well.
Food and Dining The food is great when you first get here but after a while it becomes repetitive, but that can probably be said about many institutions.
Dorm Life When first come there's a huge possibility that you won't know a majority of your class, but this is the time to meet new people. The freshman dorms aren't all that great, but it's still fun, and the dorms get better as you move up in classification.
Academic Rigor The course work can be a challenge but it is for the best possible outcome. And you can always find help if you need it. Teachers are available during office hours or by appointment, and some even have teacher's assistants for additional help. You can also seek help from your Spelman sisters. Just remember don't stress!
Tips for prospective students This isn't high school, you can have fun and you will, but always remember that your academics should come first before all.
In three sentences Spelman College is a private, historically black liberal arts college for free thinking women. Although our numbers maybe few, our success is great. It has such a rich history, that many of the incoming students continue to add upon, and it is a wonderful college experience.

What to do for fun There is ALWAYS something to do. Whether it be community opportunities, or on campus activities, your Spelman community will definately let you know.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to take it seriously. I do recommend you have fun, but at the same time do not forget about why you came.
In three sentences Spelman is a wonderful experience if you love building relationships. You are taught about culture while building a sisterhood at the same time. If you attend, Spelman will be an experience you will never forget.

What to do for fun Atlanta has a lot of places to offer for fun, if a student does not have a car, the MARTA is a great way to get around. There are three stations walking distance for students. And there are shuttles from the school that will take students to the stations.
Tips for prospective students For any college experience, learn to balance your academics, social life, and me time.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You will never find a safer college campus. The campus is completely gated with a public safety officer monitoring the entrance at all times. It is rare that you will hear of any crimes on campus ,other than the occasional theft.
Greek Life Greek life in the university center is popular; however at Spelman it is begining to fade.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The week long new student orientation program where you learn all of the Spelman traditions and are inducted in the sisterhood. Founder's Day in April where we celebrate the college. Just remember to invest in a nice white dress, black shoes, and nude stockings for both events!! That is your official uniform.
Bang for the buck Spelman is a poorly funded HBCU, so do not expect a large financial aid package. A majority of the students struggle to pay and are attending on outside scholarships or loans. I love the school, but the loan debt is not worth it.
What to do for fun Downtown Atlanta is your backyard with many sights to see. In the Atlanta University Center try going to one of the multiple events hosted during the week by campus organizations. As far as nightlife, there never should be a dull moment with the constant parties promoted every weekend and house parties thrown by off campus students.
Food and Dining The cafe has few hits ,but many misses in regards to food. The food can be tolerable some days, but others will leave you running to grab cereal. Also the recent issue of failing health inspections has left many students disgusted with the dining.
Dorm Life Dorm life freshman year is similar to living in a sorority house, due to the mock greek life set up. Each freshmen dorm has its own greek letters, colors, chants, signs, and stroll teams. This atmosphere makes for a more sisterly like bonding. As you matriculate, the dorm situations do not become that much different due to the fact a majority of dorms do not have A/C (exception LLC1, LLC2 & Suites) or allow microwaves & refrigerators. Also the vistation rules regarding males apply to every dorm,
Academic Rigor Classes at Spelman can be challenging; however like at most colleges it depends on the professor. Do not expect to find any extremely easy course at Spelman!
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for a lot of tradition, run around, and financial aid issues.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is so much to do for fun. Sometimes Spelman will get the students free tickets to go to award shows, the movies, and sports games. If you like to party there are multiple parties every weekend. There are movie nights on campus. Morehouse puts on some entertaining events. There are a lot of fun things to do. You just have to ask around, check your email, and if you have a twitter some events are usually announced on there as well.
Food and Dining The food could be better at Spelman but, its not too big of a deal. This Fall, Subway, Jamba Juice, Sushi Bar, and a Grille Restaurant will be coming to Spelman, This will add to the limited food choices that we currently have at Spelman.
Dorm Life Besides the fact that most of the freshman dorms do not have air conditioning, dorm life is pretty awesome. You get to connect with the females on a more personal level than when you are in an academic setting. Usually the females in your hallway are the ones you might end up doing a lot of extracurricular activities with, such as going out, attending school activities, etc. Also, a lot of the girls in the dorms know how to do hair so you won't have to leave campus to get your hair done. Spelman is a dry campus, meaning there is no alcohol and drugs allowed on campus and especially in the dorms. In addition, Spelman has a No Tolerance policy when it comes to violent acts. If you are caught in a physical fight on campus, you will be expelled from the school. Therefore, violence is not an issue at Spelman.
Academic Rigor I am a Biology/Pre-Medicine major at Spelman. The Biology department is TOP NOTCH! The professors help the students so much. As long as you make an effort in class and talk to your professors often, you will not have any academic problems at Spelman. Like I said before, Spelman is an academically challenging school. You must be willing to put the effort in to excel.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students need to visit the campus before they make a decision to accept their admission. With this visit, they will have an opportunity to experience the sisterhood we have at Spelman. Apply for as many scholarships possible throughout your high school years, especially your senior year. You do not want to be stressing about your financial aide the summer before your freshman year. Lastly, come ready to work. The professors at Spelman push you to your highest academic potential. Good luck!
In three sentences Spelman is an amazing institution for all females. The institution focuses on enhancing the intellectual minds of the students. Nothing but the best is expected of us, students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Best campus safety. It's a gated school that requires identification to get in, and the officers are very friendly and helpful to the girls.
Greek Life It's there.
Clubs and Activities Greek Life, Granddaughters Club, Model United Nations, Open Gym, Market Friday
Great for these types of students Good school for independent, intelligent and driven women. Also good for those seeking pre-professional educations.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The alumni arch. Tradition states that if you walk through before graduation, you will not graduate...
Bang for the buck This school offers a great education, a sisterhood, a high retention and graduation rate, and job placement for $35,000, a true bargain in the college world.
What to do for fun Go to Morehouse and hang out! There are also lots of things to do in Downtown Atlanta and at other schools, and there are parties all the time.
Food and Dining Food is really bad. Lots of girls get sick, but if you take advantage of the shuttle service to the grocery store, you'll be fine. Also, fried chicken Wednesday is pretty cool.
Dorm Life Dorms for freshman are not air conditioned, but the girls you live with will be your sisters and best friends for life.
Academic Rigor Academics are hard, especially in the sciences, but there is a lot of support for those who seek it.
Tips for prospective students For prospective students, make sure that you maintain a high GPA and participate in leadership activities. Spelman is looking for intelligent, strong women who are not afraid to take charge.
In three sentences Spelman is a great place to gain your undergraduate education. It has rigorous academics, a strong sense of tradition, and an elite sisterhood. It also offers great job placement.

Food and Dining The cafeteria was not my thing because I did not like the food choices that they offered, but some times they had good things. Also they are trying to change the cafeteria so things are more than likely going to get better.
Dorm Life The dorms are not that great to be honest only because they do not have air condition, which can be a problem in the summer because it does get really hot but as long as you bring plenty of fans you should be okay.
Academic Rigor The academics are hard depending on your teachers and how you were taught in high school, but as long as you talk to your teachers and try to get as much help as you can from them then they will often times take into consideration that you are trying and that can help your grade. Also they really encourage you to think on your own, which is really great as well, because it enables you to open your eyes to more than you thought that you could imagine.
Tips for prospective students I would say that one of the best things that you can do is get involved in anything that you can, and try and make lasting friendships with people because they can help you through the tough times. Also try and get as much as you can out of your education as well because that is important.
In three sentences Spelman is the best school to create lasting friendships. It also teaches you how to network. Spelman also teaches you how to think independently.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Spelman has a very high security rate and there are minimal disturbances within the campus. It is gated so that there is always a monitored way in and out of the campus. There are also multiple security cameras for ensured safety.
Greek Life I am not a Greek, so I cannot tell you much. However Spelman is a sorority in itself so you can relate to the Greeks and they are very down to earth. After all you are their sister too.
Clubs and Activities We have the usual clubs such as the international student club, Spanish club, computer science club (etc.) however we pride ourselves on the community and doing different activities to help the areas around us. Therefore many of our clubs are centered around community service.
Great for these types of students If you are a hard working woman who loves to challenge yourself and is open to explore new things and change the world, Spelman is the place for you!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is an arch made of flowers on Spelman's campus called the graduation arch. Legend has it that if you walk under it before your commencement, you will not graduate on time.
Bang for the buck The amount of tuition and other fees you pay for Spelman is definitely worth it because it is the number one HBCU in the country, so your education is in the right hands. It has a beautiful campus and is filled with some of the most intellectual women in the world.
What to do for fun Spelman is very close to the downtown Atlanta Area and there are also shuttles that will take you to the nearest Marta train station so that you can live the city life even without a car. In my opinion the train is easier because its accessible to the most popular places and it saves you money on parking.
Food and Dining Spelman's dining hall serves buffet style meals so that you can have a nice meal everyday and get your usual favorites. There are also frozen yogurt machines and a desert bar. Yum!
Dorm Life I have lived in the best dorms at Spelman, so dorm life has never been a hassle. The rooms are a great size and it gives you the option of bonding with your roommate or living completely separate lives. You can also request a single room if you chose to live alone.
Academic Rigor Spelman is the type of college that plays hard but works so much harder. Our curriculum is designed to challenge you and make you think. We are also a liberal arts college, so there are many required classes you will take when you attend here. This tactic is to ensure that you are well rounded and capable of handling almost any task.
Tips for prospective students I would recommend visiting before you attend the school so that you can get acquainted with the campus atmosphere. The sisterly love at Spelman will draw you in and make you realize that there is nothing like a female bond. Most importantly, go to Spelman with an open mind and a big heart because I guarantee you will need room for all your sisters.
In three sentences Spelman College is a place where women can go to not only further their education, but figure out who they are. I found myself at Spelman and I would love for anyone to have the experience I did. I would give my college a hundred on a scale of one to ten.

Dorm Life Dorm life is close-knit and you inevitably for a sisterhood.
Academic Rigor They propel you to be independent thinkers and learners. However, the small classroom environment encourages you to ask questions.
Tips for prospective students Be active in the community and don't be afraid to participate in service and to get to know those in admissions.
In three sentences Best Institution in the world. As soon as you walk on campus, you feel a sense of conerodery. Everyone is warm, and your surounded by intelligent African American women. It's phenomenal!

Categories Comments Campus Safety You are not getting on Spelman's campus without going through IT, for the males. It really does make you feel safe, sometimes you might feel like they take it too far but the campus is completely gated, and our security works really hard.
Greek Life Very popular. exclusive. over-rated in my perspective.
Clubs and Activities There are many, many organizations, not only at Spelman but you can join organizations at Morehouse, and Clark Atlanta University too. Club for everything, and if you haven't found one for you (which I highly doubt can happen) then you can register it!
Great for these types of students Students who love to socialize! Meet new people, entrepreneurs, people who are open to new people/things. People who can balance well, its not all about grades, but becoming a well-rounded person.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have songs we sing for fun, especially during New Student Orientation. Everyone learns the Spelman Hymn, we sing it at some convocations. Every Spelmanite has a pure (not cream, or ivory) white dress, or skirt suit, for the white dress ceremony, when you receive your official Morehouse brother, and get inducted officially the Sunday after NSO.
Bang for the buck Although it is costly, (in my opinion) the Lord has helped me with finances, through federal aid, scholarships, etc. Don't allow the price tag to stop you, if you really want to come here, and leave with little to no debt, it is very much possible, it is all dependent on YOU. Financial Aid can help, but Spelman is limited on the resources they give out because they are a private institution. Overall, you do get what you pay for, rigorous, challenging and stimulating classes, great network, great resources. It is much cheaper if you are able to live off campus though. Living on campus is a must for at least first year though.
What to do for fun There is ALWAYS something to do on campus, for discussion panels, to social events, fashion shows, gatherings to just hanging out in front of Jazzman's or on the strip/promenade. You cannot get bored on this campus, whether you like to party or parting isn't your scene (it wasn't for me) as long as your willing to step out, you can always find a good time, and fun people. Not to mention we are in the city of Atlanta, which you can always explore, Five points, little five points, variety of malls, parks, stone mountain. The list goes on!
Food and Dining Spelman Caf is getting an upgrade this summer, but as for previously the food gets redundant, after the first week, and the variety of options dwindles over time. You will want to eat out, or not eat often, because the caf is not always filling, or appetizing.
Dorm Life Freshman year, dorm life is the best, I would even say nationally, just because of the tradition of freshman dorm rivalries, makes freshman year that much more fun! As for the no A/C in the freshman dorms, it's just one of those things many have to go through, but it brings you closer to your Spelman sisters!
Academic Rigor Definitely a challenging course load, not overwhelming but enough to give you critical thinking skills, and mature your mind
Tips for prospective students Come ready to network, and excel in classes. Spelman is a part of the Atlanta University and a great place to mature. Your reputation will stay with you, it is a small school. Plan accordingly, and wisely, time management is KEY, I recommend making a schedule. You can have fun and do well. Don't think there will be more drama, or less fun because it is all girls, in my perspective, I think it's the opposite, but it comes down to who YOU are. respect and look out for your sister.
In three sentences The illustrious Spelman College is a dynamic, diverse, and authentic institution. A traditional, and prestigious school that started in 1881, Spelman provides the foundation needed to be successful at any time place or situation. Focused on developing the global woman from adolescence into womanhood, Spelman is a stepping stone, and a much needed environment for the next generation.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are a ton of things that you can do for fun. There is always something fun going on, on campus.
Food and Dining The food in the cafeteria is average. We had some low ratings when the health department came and inspected, but it eventually got better.
Dorm Life Dorm life is a lot of fun. Freshman dorms do not have air conditioning so I would suggest that incoming freshmen invest in a fan. You will create a bond with the girls on your hall.
Academic Rigor Academics are very important no matter what school you attend. Spelman has some challenging classes but your professors are always willing to help you.
Tips for prospective students Have your priorities in line!! There are a lot of activities, events, and parties that go on throughout the week, and you have to be able to manage your time between having fun and doing school work.
In three sentences Spelman College is a wonderful school! Faculty and staff are very helpful and nice. Spelman should offer more scholarships because the cost to attend is a lot.

Categories Comments What to do for fun You have Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College right next door. There are plenty of student activities set up by the organizations on campus, not to mention the countless parties. Also, Atlanta is a pretty cool city so there's never a dull moment.
Food and Dining The food isn't amazing, but there are plenty of options, including a salad bar, sandwich, and pizza line. Fried Chicken Wednesdays and Fried Fish Fridays are pretty good as well.
Dorm Life The dorm life is a good as you can make it. If you make an effort to get to know your hall mates and residential advisors, it can turn out to be a great experience.
Academic Rigor Spelman sets the academic bar high. They have a reputation to uphold and will never let you forget that you are a Spelman woman and should carry yourself as such.
Tips for prospective students Be active in your community and focus on your grades. Find ways to show your interest, even if it is something as simple as signing up for a tour.
In three sentences The atmosphere is great, the teachers really push you and expect for you to do well. There's always fun to be had, but academics always comes first at Spelman.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Set in the heart of the south, there are tons of things to do for every college student planning to attend Spelman. One of the most unique things about Spelman though is that is a part of the Atlanta University Center. Between Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Clark Atlanta University, there is ALWAYS something to get into without even having to get into a car! It's the best.
Food and Dining Essentially there are two food options available on campus. There is the Alma-Upshaw Dining Hall, and the Jaguar Underground Grill. The Alma-Upshaw Dining Hall is the main location for all students to have their breakfast, lunch, and dinner if they are on a meal plan. The cafeteria schedule is broken down into three time segments for each meal where students can swipe once per segment under the plan. Depending on the plan though, some students may only swipe twice daily. There are many different food options and the staff is constantly taking suggestions as to how the menu should be created. The only issue with the Upshaw cafeteria is that it closes relatively early for students studying late. That is where the Jaguar Grill comes into play. It opens in the early afternoon and closes later than the upstairs dining hall. It provides students with a fast-food experience and still allows them the opportunity to stay on their meal plan. Although less money is allotted onto the student's ID for the Grill, it adds a nice variety to the student's meal options.
Dorm Life Spelman's Dorm Life is quite unique and it is one aspect of campus life that is either loved or hated by the students. Most of the first-year students' residence halls do NOT have air in them. There is only one that does have air and it is reserved for some honors and disabled students only. It is somewhat of a tradition and makes for quite the living experience Freshman year. It is said though, that this tradition is being phased out and all of the dorms will have air in a few years. As the years progress though, the dorms do get much better. The upperclassman dorms have air and one of them even has its own cafeteria. It is reserved for Junior and Senior students only, as it is apartment-style living. That residence hall is card access only and only residents of the Suites' IDs operate the doors. The BEST part about living on campus though is that you are FIVE minutes from absolutely everything on campus. It is almost impossible to be late for class even if you oversleep or there's inclement weather!
Academic Rigor Like I mentioned previously, Spelman looks for the best. What's most important to the staff in the Spelman community is that students are learning and upholding the standard of academic excellence. Although the work is challenging, Spelman caters to all of its students no matter what level of learning they are on. Almost all of the classes are small and the professors are always available to assist students when they are seeking academic help.
Tips for prospective students If Spelman is where a young woman feels that she wants to continue her education, the best advice I can give is to avail herself to all of the opportunities she is handed while on campus. Spelman encourages growth and does an excellent job of setting its students up for success, so I would definitely remind my Spelman sister to take advantage of anything she is offered.
In three sentences Spelman College is absolutely incredible. It is a place where young women enter, and are made into some of the brightest and most competetive leaders on the planet. Simply put, Spelman finds and creates nothing but the best.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities There is something for everyone.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus You just have to experience the traditions to really understand Spelman and the Pride that it instills in the women that come out of the school.
What to do for fun In the AUC (Atlanta University Center) there is always something going on. Morehouse, Spelman, and Clark are constantly having events so there is never a dull moment on campus. Also, you are in Atlanta and the city also has many fun things to do.
Food and Dining Students go crazy for fried chicken wednesdays and premium night. I am not totally sure what they are cooking up in the cafe now.
Dorm Life Some people cannot handle living with a bunch of women, but it helps to cultivate sisterhood and bonds that you will hold onto forever.
Academic Rigor The Academics at Spelman are no joke but many of the women I know felt more than prepare when they continued to their graduate level studies or they received job offers.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of every opportunity you can while at Spelman no matter how small you think it may be. So many great things can an have come from Spelmanites taking on these task with the love, support, and guidance of your peers and the faculty.
In three sentences Spelman College is a gem committed to cultivating the best and brightest women of color through scholarship, sisterhood, and community.

Food and Dining Not the best, but they have their good days. Also the cafe will close earlier than you expect, I mean well before 8 pm. Be prepared to order food.
Dorm Life Freshman year is very tribal and group focused, but after that you rarely recognize the dorm life.
Academic Rigor The academic vigor depends on the courses that are taken, but this is an academically challenging institution.
Tips for prospective students Give yourself room to grown and change in this environment. Allow yourself to be new and know that this is only four years of your life.
In three sentences The Spelman College Experience, is exactly that and much more. The environment is tough and rigid at times. If you allow yourself to be open to the college experience you will definitely grow.

Categories Comments Greek Life Aplhas, Deltas, Ques, and AKAs run this campus!
Great for these types of students Highly ambitious and intelligent black women
What to do for fun Being a freshman at Spelman introduces you to so many new things, it may seem a bit overwhelming. On campus there are some things to do.
Food and Dining The cafe is really boring and repetitive, you can almost predict what you will have each and every meal. We have a Grille for students who do not like to eat in the cafe. If you do not mind paying out of pocket for all of your meals you can enjoy chicken fingers, fries, burgers, pizza, ice cream etc at the Grille.
Dorm Life Dorm life is not so great. Spelman is big on tradition, and crappy freshman dorms are apart of that tradition. You can move into the Suites upon reaching your Junior year which are very nice, but very costly.
Academic Rigor You will definitely work here! Depending upon your major, some students will have a heavier work load than others. You MUST study and be diligent in your time management because every professor conducts their class as if their class is the only class you are enrolled in.
Tips for prospective students Come to Spelman with an open mind. The possibilities here are unlimited. You will meet Spelmanites from almost every corner of the world. Although Spelman is a great school, be sure that you have a way to pay your tuition because the cost of attendance is extremely expensive.
In three sentences Spelman College is the leading institution in cultivating powerful black women. Spelman is unique in that it caters equally to character development and education. Choosing to attend Spelman Colege was the best decision I ever made.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Our security does not play. Boys have to be off campus by 12 am. If not they will face consequences. Spelman campus is secure with gates and 24 hour security, including ID checks upon entrance to the campus.
Greek Life We have the divine 9 fraternities and sororities that are dominant and heavily sought out in our campus community.
Clubs and Activities I have nothing to say but awesome. There's a club for everyone. If there isnt, you can create one yourself!
Great for these types of students All honestly, if you can make the best out any situation you can come here. I'm an art major and my hair is brown and blue. You probably was not expecting that. But the Spelman woman is not a physical description, it's an embodiment of the beautiful successful woman you will become in the path that you choose.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Unusual, freshman not having air conditioning. That's tradition, and spelman tries to bring in freshman through tradition so they'll learn how to appreciate the school.
Bang for the buck You will definitely get your money's worth coming to Spelman. You get what you pay for. The educational experience and student experience here is something you can't pay for in my opinion, you learn and grow so much. Also, with all the repoir that spelman alum and faculty have, it's almost impossible for you not to have some form of a connection to an important person in your career path. That's one of the biggest pluses.
What to do for fun There are a plethora of activities to get involved with while at spelman such as clubs, freshman stroll teams, regional step teams, market Friday and hump Wednesday, and of course parties.
Food and Dining The food in the cafe is good enough to feed you, there are many options. Pizza, salads, soup, sandwiches, tofu and vegetarian foods, the main entree they cook for the day and ice cream! Well, frozen yogurt.
Dorm Life The dorms are not terrible but being a freshman at Spelman college you live with tradition. In other words you will not have air conditioning! Other than that dorm living is fun. But luckily there are going to put air in all dorms.
Academic Rigor All the classes are good. The professors for the most part are eager to teach and help us learn. The work load is not too bad depending on your major, but overall it's neutrally sustainable.
Tips for prospective students Come to this school if you want to make your distinct imprint on the world and pursue your dreams.
In three sentences Spelman was specially handcrafted and has evolved over the years specifically, I feel, for me. This school takes accountability for all of their students' futures through active administrative/professor involvement. There is honestly no other college on the planet that prepares young African American women to elegantly take on the universe using their intelligence, while exuding confidence and greatness.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Since Spelman is an all girls school we get made fun of for our security acting like an 'over protective father'. Our security is very strict, boys off campus by midnight. We all get provided with safety whistles at the start of our freshman year
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Rumor has it, if you walk under the vive arch in the large oval grass area you are cursed not to graduate.
What to do for fun There is so much to do each day around campus. From Market friday, to the street fair every wednesday on Morehouse College's campus across the street. We also have many pageants, parties, meetings, viewings, and other social events that keep the student life very active.
Food and Dining The food isn't bad, but they serve the same thing every week and repetitiveness gets old. I feel like they should offer more healthy choices and freshly made meals.
Dorm Life The dorms are very old, few have air conditioning and Atlanta gets ridiculously hot in the summer months. The rooms are also very cramped and small, many times with broken dressers and desks. They try to update them when they can, but they need to update a lot of things.
Academic Rigor The professors at Spelman are very strict and tough graders. Some students hate it but it makes me challenge myself more and put whats important into prospective.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to work really hard and put a lot of time into each class. Also don't get overwhelmed with activities, school comes first and there will always be an even next week.
In three sentences All of my professors are challenging and stress a lot of importance on putting school first. The campus has a very open and inviting environment which made me want to attend in the first place. And this school gives me an opportunity to explore my options, Im involved in so many groups that keep me active and learning.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Spelman College public safety is very involved in the well-being of the women of Spelman College and goes above and beyond to protect us.
Greek Life Greek life is very competitive on campus and along with the traditional Divine Nine sororities, there are other national sororities offered on campus.
Clubs and Activities There are many unique clubs on campus that are mostly community involved and there is always room for more!
Great for these types of students African-American women, free thinkers, and any other socially conscious woman that would lie to apply regardless of raise.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus New Student Orientation is when you will learn the history and traditions of Spelman College and the sisterhood. Here you will participate in specific activities and ceremonies that I do not want to give away too many details about! You'll see!
Bang for the buck A lot of money goes towards sponsoring every student to be able to Study Abroad. Take advantage of it!! Along with that, there are tons of cool programs, partnerships, and scholarships available if you are proactive, nothing will be handed to you.
What to do for fun Spelman College is located in the heart of Atlanta, there are endless amounts of things to do nearby and with Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University right next door, there are endless amounts of fun activities right on campus.
Food and Dining While not the best, the campus has made tremendous strides in the quality of the food and access to food and continues to grow.
Dorm Life Freshman year dorm life will build lifelong bonds with your Spelman sisters.
Academic Rigor The classes are rigorous but manageable as long as you prioritize and use good time-management skills.
Tips for prospective students Stay focused and have fun. Allow your courses and experiences to open your mind and introduce you to new things you have never even imagined.
In three sentences Spelman College is the leading historically Black college and produces some of the most well-rounded, free thinking, African American women. Food and Dining The food is meant for people who dont mind what they are eating. It's not for me though.
Dorm Life It's a good experience for freshman because it always you to get the full dorm life. Having to share a restroom with many girls is adaptable.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The food is just okay most of the time. Fried Chicken Wednesdays are hands down the best days in the cafeteria. Some of the dining staff have attitudes, and the silverware are not clean most of the time.
Dorm Life All of the freshman dorms are raggedy. If you are invited to join the Honors Program or are chosen to be a Bonner Scholar, you will be in LLC I, the only freshman dorm with air conditioning. It's the closest thing to paradise you will get as a freshman. Still, as a freshman it is very beneficial and fun as it enables you to make new friends and form sisterly bonds with your hallmates.
Academic Rigor Do not underestimate the difficulty of the curriculum at Spelman because it is an HBCU. Professors here generally have multiple degrees, published books, and years of experience under their belt. There is also a culture here that encourages academic excellece, so mediocre grades are unacceptable.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you are as well-rounded as possible. Leadership in student organizations, grades, SAT/ACT scores, community service, and recommendations are all vital to your admittance. It is important that you tour the school prior to accepting your admittance or even applying so that you are not blind sighted when you come in the fall. Also, ask current students about their experience at the College so that you get a real, unbiased perspective.
In three sentences Spelman College is an investment. Its administration has its hiccups and out-of-date methods of doing things, but its education quality and career opportunities are unparalleled. It is the perfect institution for intelligent, strong Black women

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus security is top notch. Spelmans security team is comparable to Homeland Security. From the campuses unusually camouflaged location, to our mobile resources we are always ensured to be safe on campus. The two entrances on campus are monitored and regulated 24 hours a day. Security recruits every Spelmanite as a member of security by ensuring we have their number, basic skills of resistance and a Spelman Whistle. Every Spelmanite has a Spelman Whistle. The Spelman Whistle is a key-chain whistle that we are instructed to activate to draw attention to a crime or an assault on or off campus. You will be safe. (Trust no one)
Greek Life The Greek life here is entirely sacred. Honestly, the Greek life is always very live and present on campus. Every day, every corner, every event Spelmans Greeks are always representing their organization well. We have Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Gamma Sigma Sigma, Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Sorority, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho sororities on campus. Clubs and Activities Spelman supports Religious Life, Political Life, Global Awareness, Sorority Life, Student Organizations and Student Government. Homecoming is a week long event like no other. Market Friday is a market brought to you every Friday with different venders selling various items. There are absolutely too much activities and I do not want to be bias so here is the webpage: http://www.spelman.edu/student-life/student-life-and-engagement
Great for these types of students By applying to spelman you are declaring that you will change the world. This school is made out of leaders that are ready to take responsibility seriously. As I mentioned before, Spelman is not for everyone. Not everyone wants to better themselves and enhance the lives others. Spelman College is for the girl with outlandish dreams that nobody believes she can achieve, not even herself. I mean this in its most analytical way possible. Not all Spelmanites (Spelman College students and alumni) arrive at spelman with a made up and determined mind. In fact, a lot of us show up at Spelmans gates lost in our own overly thinking mentalities. Spelman unravels us and hints that it is okay to discover. This is where you will find yourself and so much more. Spelman makes you so uncomfortable with the world that you want to immediately want to change it. Although many first semester Spelmanites know what they want to change in the world, many of us need a couple more months, years, or decades to figure out where we fit.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Spelman College's motto should be we stand for exclusive Traditions. In fact one of the most prompt traditions to conquer, the Spelman Hymn, defines tradition in its lyrics. Honestly you should learn it now if you plan on joining this institution. The Spelman Hymn (Words and music by Mrs. Eddye Money Shivery, C'34) Spelman, thy name we praise Standards and honor raise, we'll ever faithful be Throughout eternity. May peace with thee abide And God forever guide Thy heights supreme and true. Blessings to you. Through years of toil and pain May thy dear walls remain Beacons of heavenly light, Undaunted by the fight; And when life's race is won, Thy noble work is done, Oh God, forever bind Our hearts to thine. Spelman has so many unusual traditions that I have become immune to them. But do not worry all of them are worthy of consideration and most are optional.
Bang for the buck The Spelman experience thus far has been very rewarding. I wish my entire generation, of every ethnicity and every religion could experience Spelman. It is such an accomplishment to be able to call this bubble on earth your home, even if only temporarily.
What to do for fun There is so much you can do at spelman that is hysterically fun. It all depends on what you enjoy most in your spare time. If you enjoy parties that start in the middle of the night, you will love the shuttles that arrive to take you to and from parties nearly every evening. If you love kicking back, there are more intimate parties in the Atlanta University area that do not require as much traveling and commitment. If your idea of fun is helping out, we have that too! There are at least a dozen volunteer based organizations that are extremely involved in the community. If you have a religious, career, lifestyle, interest, or hobby you would like to explore Spelman has a bunch of organizations and clubs. We are also a part of a larger consortium called The Atlanta Universities that allows us to participate with larger more diverse groups. If you enjoy sleeping, watching television, intimate talks with friends, and watching you tube videos your very own dorm room can serve as entertainment.
Food and Dining There is one cafeteria for underclassmen; Albert E. Manley College Center houses the Alma Upshaw Dining Room. In the lower level of Albert E. Manley College Center there are other options at The Grill. They both have substantial edible food. Spelman College is currently going to renovate the cafeteria and the grill for spring 2013. I am excited to see the changes. I am sure the four stars I gave food and dining it will become five. Right outside of the gates, where Spelman College and Morehouse College meet, there are dining options you yourself can pay for. Jazzman's Cafe is great for coffee, a nice meeting or much needed socialization.
Dorm Life If you are looking for a five star hotel suite that comes complete with a maid, an unlimited minibar and temperature controlled rooms, then Spelmans dorms may dissatisfy you. There are four freshman dorms: Dorothy Shepard Manley Hall (Manley), Howard-Harreld Hall (HH), Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Hall (Abby), and the Donald and Isabel Stewart Living-Learning Center (LLC). If you are in the Honors program you will most likely receive the most lavish dorm LLC. Although LLC is not most girls idea of luxury, it is more luxurious than the other endurance rivaling dorms. Manley, HH, and Abby have no central air, but they still have plugs for fans. So when shopping for bedding and books do not forget a fan or fans. Box fans are great for the windows and a smaller fan is great for rainy days or individual cooling. Spelmans freshman dorms have these mock sorority traditions which you will embrace throughout your existence here and even after graduation. For example, I live in Manley Hall and our artificial sorority is Omega Nu. This is very fun to participate in, but do not take it too seriously. I think the tradition is embraced because of the sisterhood it creates with in the dorms and on campus. All freshman dorms have community bathrooms. Therefore, your bathroom experience depends on your community. Mine has been successful and easily adaptable. If you grew up sharing a bathroom with siblings its extremely similar due to its first come first severe nature. They are cleaned daily, so do not worry about germs any more than any other public restroom. But flip-flops/ shower shoes are a must have, do not come without a pair.
Academic Rigor Academic rigor is not the first challenge you will encounter here at Spelman but it is definitely an academic adjustment. Within the first couple of days you will be given a syllabus for each of your classes. These syllabi are your golden tickets to success. They basically tell you how to get an A, B, C, or D (everyone knows how to fail). You do not have to memorize them but definitely review the entire thing the first week of class so you have a solid foundation of understanding. Syllabi also allow you to measure if a course is too challenging, or too easy, so that you can adjust your classes during add/drop period. If you know how to learn (some people forget how to learn) the Academic Rigor will be a humble grasp. Academics get most rigorous in you critical thinking classes, which are most of your classes. If you maintain a standard of completion and know that you are a student that is here to get educated, you should be fine.
Tips for prospective students The application process is the first test, so do not give up. Once you get in apply for as many scholarships and scholarship program opportunities as possible. Financial Aid is the second test. You are investing in an exclusive, expensive, and eclectic education, so be prepared to pay money. But do not get discouraged, even if you feel financially deprived. The most important thing before you take these two tests, make sure you visit. If you cannot visit, look online (YouTube, Facebook, twitter, etc.) for first accounts of what we call the Spelman Mile. Also, if you trust any alumnus of Spelman ask them to give you an honest account of the College. I know this really helped me after looking at dozens of identical college admissions pamphlets.
In three sentences Spelman College is not only rich in its history, but it is rich in its traditions, exclusive classes, and way of thinking. Spelman is not for everyone. Spelman is for the girl with outlandish dreams that nobody believes she can achieve, not even herself. (But she will)

Categories Comments Campus Safety On campus, inside the gates, is generally safe. However, it's not so much the case once leaving.
Clubs and Activities The clubs on campus sponsor tons of activities and there's always some clubs or groups giving away free stuff
Great for these types of students People who prefer or need more one on one time with professors. They're all really supportive of our education here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The arch. Don't go under it until you're graduating.
Bang for the buck The price tag's kind of high, but scholarships and financial aid help a lot!
What to do for fun There's always activities on campus and in the AUC, so there's never a dull moment.
Food and Dining The cafeteria has its own unique spin on food. It's definitely an experience. Hopefully with the new renovations, it will get better.
Dorm Life Depending on what dorm you're in, life can be easy or hard. Hopefully roommates work out but if not, there are more single rooms available as upperclassmen.
Academic Rigor Most classes are extra, but although it may seem like too much at the time, it can help you in the end.
Tips for prospective students Just keep the reason you came to college in mind when it comes to balance.
In three sentences Spelman is definitely a different type of learning environment. Besides being rich in tradition, there is a strong sisterhood that can be found. Makes me glad I came to a small school instead of a large university.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are tons of things to do both on-campus (with the various college activities) and off-campus in and around Atlanta.
Food and Dining Very good - down-home southern cooking!
Dorm Life Great! Lots of fun and rewarding - meeting all the different young women of different and various backgrounds.
Academic Rigor *****! Tough and rigorous, but that's what is needed for a student to do their best!
Tips for prospective students Check into what the school has to offer early that way you can make the best decision.
In three sentences A great place for young African-American women to obtain a good, solid education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Spelman takes security very seriously because frankly we are in the ghetto.
Greek Life To me it is not that big of a deal because people will accept you no mater what.
Clubs and Activities So many things you can do to get involved, you should never be bored.
Great for these types of students Anyone who wants to experience an hbcu.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Don't walk on the grass.
Bang for the buck Spelman is definitely worth the money
What to do for fun Party, get involved in clubs and community service. Go to the mall
Food and Dining Once again 5 star but there is always something good to eat. Pizza, sandwich bar, salad bar, the Fab 500 which feature healthy meals or the main line which is mostly hit or miss.
Dorm Life The dorms are not 5 star quality but after freshman year dorm life gets easier. 3/4 freshman dorms do not have AC and it is only crazy in the first 2 1/2 months of school. It is manageable however with a small personal fan and 2 window fans.
Academic Rigor So long as you aren't out partying every weekend you should be able to get the work done.
Tips for prospective students Apply for many scholarships outside of Spelman because you will need them but it is so worth it. Also get involved in a lot of community service.
In three sentences Spelman is the number one HBCU in the country. That is a fact not an opinion. It shows because the teachers and staff truly care for the students.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Here at Spelman we have a white dress ceremony where all of the students dress in all white and get together and celebrate the opening and tradition of the history here at the school. We also have a tradition where we get a Brother for the neighboring Morehouse college, among other traditions. This is a great way to develop friendships and meet new people.
What to do for fun There are plenty of social outlets here in the Atlanta University Center for you to go to and participate in, both on and off campus. There are shuttles that take you to and from your destination and there is also plenty of malls and shopping centers in a close vicinity.
Food and Dining The food is served buffet style, and who doesn't like buffet style?! We also have themed days for food, so it never gets boring.
Dorm Life The rooms are a nice size; not huge, but not too small. They come with dressers, closets and desks to accommodate your spacial needs as well as room underneath the beds (or drawers) for extra storage. There are community kitchens and refrigerators for your snacks, personal refrigerators are not allowed. There is a strong sense of community in each of the halls and it's really easy to make friends.
Academic Rigor Because Spelman is an all woman's college, it can get a little competitive; but there are resources here that can help you if you ever lose your way academically. The teachers here expect excellence, and are more than welcome to help you achieve it; as long as you are willing to put in the work. Mediocrity is not an option.
Tips for prospective students Do not be discouraged about not being able to afford school. If you communicate your concerns with Financial Aid and ask for help someone will try to help you to the best of their ability. Don't be afraid of meeting new people, friends are easy to make here and everyone here is generous and nice and will welcome you home!
In three sentences Spelman College is a fantastic school for any young woman of color looking to seek a place that holds merit, history, and people who are interested in higher education and pursuing a career. The school is really big on sisterhood, and when you arrive here you're immediately immersed into a feeling of family and belonging. The school is not just a school, but a home and a family.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Spelman College is a private institution that is gated so that they are able to protect all its students within the gate. Although there are robberies they mostly occur off campus. Public safety patrols and works around the clock to ensure the safety of each student. There are strict rules about guys on campus and after a certain time they are not allowed.
Greek Life Greek life is very big on campus and in the AUC. They are always seen and they step at many school functioned events. During probates the whole school is involved and it is a very big deal.
Great for these types of students Young ladies that are looking to be a few steps in front of their peers that want to grow into a women of social consciousness, community based, and nationally and globally aware should apply.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are many clubs and activities. There is at least one club and activity that caters to each student, whether or not they join that said club or activity is another story. The student at Spelman College does a good job on appealing to specific needs. To list a few are different language clubs, region clubs, international clubs, community service based clubs, work out activities and many more. The only down side is that there will no longer be sports offered at Spelman College but to compensate for that they are offering more activities in replacement.
Bang for the buck Spelman is well worth the cost of tuition. You are not only paying for the school but also the brand. A student that graduates from will not only graduate from the number one HBCU but will also gain a large network of opportunities. A college experience at Spelman College is like no other.
What to do for fun There are a lot of activities that takes place at Spelman as well as in the AUC (Atlanta University Center). They offer several fun and challenging work out sessions that gets you fit. They also have Market Friday which is a day of music, greek strolling, and venders to shop from. Open Mic Night is an event that takes place every Thursdays on Morehouse College that caters to poets, singers and anyone that wants to listen. There are many clubs that have events so there is never a dull moment.
Food and Dining The Spelman cafeteria has been getting better as time goes along. They still have some meals that are less than appealing but they also a lot of other good meals. They currently have a stir fry, pasta, and fab 500 line which changes meals each day as well as the main line. They are now in the process of renovating the lower portion of the building which will include a subway, sushi bar, and smoothie shop. The food and dining is ok but I know in the upcoming future it will better.
Dorm Life Dorm life is an experience that Spelman College wants all students to have. For that reason they require freshmen and sophomores to live on campus. The freshmen dorms are usually less than desired for the simple fact that they do not have air-conditioning besides one because Spelman is a stickler for tradition. Once you complete your first year all the upperclass dorms are filled with air-conditioning and wifi for the most part. Living in a dorm allows students to gain friends and in the know for all events that happen on campus. There are many rules that can become tedious at times but once you become an upperclass woman they impact your life less.
Academic Rigor Spelman offers many academically rigorous courses that prepares each student for their preferred major and for the real world as a whole. Each major course is worth 4 credits which is good because some of the surrounding school only have 3 credit classes. This also means that you would have tout fourth more handwork in some cases. For the most part the class are not extremely hard and many of the professors will work with you need help.
Tips for prospective students Students that are interested in Spelman College or any other school for that matter should exhaust all options for scholarships and grants because it is a very competitive world to acquire money to attend college . Prospective students of Spelman should be prepared for a lot of traditions and look forward to the bonds that they will make for a life time. This school prides itself on shaping women to be nationally and globally aware as well as to contribute to the community simultaneously.
In three sentences Spelman College as an overall institution is well worth the money of attendance. It has a great sisterhood bond and many ways to accomandate each student. This school is made to craft the upcoming women of society.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You are treated like the daughters of the Public Safety Team... Literally
What to do for fun A lot of things are planned for freshman, so take advantage of that.
Food and Dining The cafeteria has it's good days, and it's bad days. You'll see when you get here!
Dorm Life Meet people from other hallways and floors within your dorm, but also meet people outside of your dorm. I love living in the dorms. Moving off campus is cheaper, and a lot better as you get older, but then I feel like you might miss some of the fun things.
Academic Rigor Challenging, depends on your major and what professors you take. ALWAYS GO TO OFFICE HOURS IF POSSIBLE!
Tips for prospective students Get active on campus! Come to Spel-bound. Attend office hours.
In three sentences I love it here. I don't think that I would choose another school. I've truly met my friends for life here.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The social scene is thriving and exciting, lots to do on and off campus for fun.
Food and Dining Spelman does not have enjoyable meals as does any cafeteria and I often leave hungry.
Dorm Life Freshman year dorms might be obnoxious, but afterwards you'll love the dorm life.
Academic Rigor Spelman is tough but definitely manageable.
Tips for prospective students Maximize all resources on campus and truly love what you begin to study
In three sentences Spelman is a highly prestigious college that I enjoy attending. The classes are difficult, but appropriately challenging. There are ample extracurricular activities to get involved with that look great on your resume when it is time to apply for internships, jobs, programs, or what have you.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This institution is for students who are inspired, ambitious, and well-rounded individuals.
Tips for prospective students Be aware that all of the core requirement classes taken in high school will be required at Spelman. If you live far away, the people that you will be surrounded by will become your family. A loving family. Get Involved but not too involved. You do not have to know what you want to major in but at least be 75% sure.
Bang for the buck I was aware prior to applying to Spelman that this institution is very expensive. Everyday I remain steadfast and I am receiving financial aid. I would like to be offered grants and/or scholarships to lighten my load a lot more.
Am enjoying being here Since I've came to visit in April of 2010, I have fallen in love with Spelman. The experiences I receive here I will not receive anywhere else. I am proud to say I am a Spelmanite. The young ladies I met in my dorm will be my life-long friends as I grow. Spelman is right for me. During NSO, you receive a Morehouse Brother and they are suppose to be there for you as a male role in your life while your here. I love mine too death. They are there for me all the time. We spend time together having fun. There is always something to do off or on campus.
Am learning a lot I did not intend to attend an HBCU because of the African-American experience but for the lifelong bond that I know I will have as time goes by. The professors are there for you when help is needed the most. I am most certainly appreciative of the education I am receiving thus far.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students A female who wants a top notch Liberal Arts education and chooses to change the world.
Tips for prospective students Be open-minded. Just because Spelman is a all female-school it doesn't automatically mean that there will be drama and or you will have a less than desirable college experience.
Bang for the buck Definitely worth the tuition.
Am enjoying being here I love it. The atmosphere is like a small family, a real sisterhood. The professors and faculty really care about you and want you to succeed. Most of the females are friendly and take the whole Spelman sisterhood seriously.
Am learning a lot The education here is top notch. i love the fact that you learn outside of the classroom as well as inside.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Young black women who want to become leaders and Change the World Spelman cultivates the mind, spirit and body with the values of integrity, perseverance, sisterhood and service. If these things are of importance to you, then Spelman might be for you :)
Tips for prospective students Stay on top of assignments and don't slack around. You buy books for classes to use them, so do so! It will be tempting not to read sometimes, but it would be to your advantage if you just take the time out to at least skim the text. Be active on campus and in the Atlanta community. Be safe and take in the beauty of college life.
Bang for the buck Some things such as no air conditioning in freshman dorms and some strict rules about visitation makes one complain every now and again, especially for it being so expensive, but the overall feeling and benefit from being in Spelman's environment is well worth it :)
Am enjoying being here I have made wonderful friends and hope in making more as I matriculate! You get to meet different people, both students and administrators. There are many exciting things to do around the Atlanta community, but be sure to stay on top of school work, because it can get hectic if you don't.
Am learning a lot I just finished my freshman year and I am now entering my sophomore year there. The required curriculum offered new ideas and will help to contribute to the knowledge I will acquire when I start taking my major classes this upcoming semester.

Categories Comments Campus Safety spelman's public safety office is committed to keeping and maintaining spelman as a safe and productive place to learn and grow.there are several officers, always on duty, and they also patrol the neighborhoods surrounding the campus.they update students, faculty, and staff whenever there is a weather alert,or possible safety concern.
Greek Life the greek life is well respected on spelman, and there are several greek organizations on campus.every fall and spring, there is rush, and most of the sororities will host activities throughout each semester on campus.
Clubs and Activities there are several clubs, and academic or health related clubs on campus.in addition, the spelman wellness center offers classes to help students get in shape and learn various nutritional facts.there are also several workout machines located on campus, and a swimming pool, tennis court, and bowling alley.
Great for these types of students spelman is great for minorities, women of color and all ethnicities, age groups and religions.spelman recognizes that great women come in all shapes and sizes, color and ages, and does not discriminate against anyone.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus usually, during the first week of freshman orientation,in the middle of the morning, students will awake to the sounds of yelling ra's (resident assistants)asking them to wake up,and come to sister's chapel (campus church)to sing the spelman sisterhood song while holding hands in candlelight.spelman also celebrates founders day in april, where the graduating seniors are allowed to wear their caps and gowns for the first time, and the freshman must wear all white.
What to do for fun because spelman is in the heart of downtown atlanta, there are several clubs, bars, and restaurants that students can go to unwind.spelman is specifically located in the west end area, where there is a mall literally five minutes away from school.marta, atlanta's public transit system, will take those students who do not have cars,to various places around atlanta, including the elaborate lenox mall in the wealthy buckhead neighborhood,or to atlantic station, where there are several shops and eateries, including an amc theater and several nightclubs, just to name a few.
Food and Dining there are several locations on and around campus to meet student's nutritional needs.there is the alma upshaw cafeteria, the jaguar grill, and the suites dining hall.i personally prefer jaguar grill, because you can get made to order smoothies, burgers, fries, sandwiches, salads and pizza.between spelman and morehouse campuses,is a cafe called jasmine's.some nights, they have a poetry slam and play live jazz music.they have awesome shakes as well.
Dorm Life as a freshman, the dorms help to establish strong friendships, and sisterhood.i did not have the opportunity to stay on campus, but plenty of my friends were able to partake in the opportunity.it is agreed, however, that room and board costs greatly, but students enjoy the ease of being able to maneuver around campus.unfortunately, freshman and sophomores are not allowed to have vehicles, but the good news is,spelman recently built new on-campus,green apartments with their very own parking garage and dining cafeteria.
Academic Rigor the professors are very knowledgeable, and most are helpful,in terms of ensuring that students attain the knowledge and can apply it to everyday life.there are several resources on campus to help students learn, including tutors,a learning resource center, language comprehension/computer center, and a career center.there are several majors to choose from, and throughout a student's matriculation, they will have several advisers that will guide them throughout their collegiate career.
Tips for prospective students i would suggest getting to know the upper class students and becoming more familiar with the professors.keep and maintain a working relationship with your professors,as they will become good references when applying for grad school, scholarships, and internships.

Categories Comments Food and Dining So people say otherwise, however I thought the food was delicious. I would not mind eating on campus.
Dorm Life They dorms are comfy and provides a sufficient amount of space.
Academic Rigor I received a 1160 on my SAT (CR+M), acquired a 4.1 G.P.A, and was accepted. I later received a 1320 on my SAT however scholarships were all gone and most required SAT scores of 1200 or higher. Therefore the school is quite academically competitive.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you send in your SAT and ACT scores as soon as you receive them. Also, after April scholarships here are nearly impossible to acquire.
In three sentences The college campus is beautiful and homey- feeling. However, the attendees are quite snobbish and do not provoke a charismatic attitude to those of others schools. The advisors and guides were nice but you could tell they were putting on a facade.

Food and Dining It has recently gotten better because a new meal plan has been added. Now you can eat at the grill and use about $20 in the cafe. The cafeteria food however is not great. The best thing they serve there is the ice cream. There's also a few chicken places and pizza parlor off campus, but it's not worth walking off campus to order it.
Dorm Life Most of the freshman dorms don't have air conditioning. Forced to live on campus freshman and sophomore year. Dorm spirit is a big deal on campus, though. Alumnae still rep their freshman dorm and complain about their lack of cool air.
Academic Rigor Schoolwork is challenging. The work is different according to major. I've definitely learned a lot.
Tips for prospective students The school is so expensive. Make sure you apply for as many scholarships as possible because Spelman doesn't offer many. If you want one from the school, make sure you volunteer a lot, that way you'll be eligible to apply as a Bonner Scholar.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The white dress tradition dates back to the earlier years of the college. Before any of the student would leave the gates of Spelman they always made sure they looked presentable; pure white dress, flesh tone nylons, black closed toes shoes, and white gloves. This tradition is still embraced during NSO, Founder's Day, Class Day. Baccalaureate, and Graduation.
Bang for the buck Spelman is and has been the number one Historically Black College for the last 6 consecutive years for a reason.

Food and Dining They are currently renovating the cafe but we have a food court with starbucks, subway, sushi, grille, and jamba juice.
