Great for these types of students

People willing to learn, people wanting a diverse campus, people of all personalities, people wanting a FABULOUS college experience!

    Tips for prospective students

DON'T let the private school tuition price and the all-girls mantra scare you away. Private schools often have more financial aid to give and the financial aid office is good with helping you as well. I find, that going to an all-girls school helps me to be more confident and speak up in class. Plus, you can always take a class at one of the ACTC schools: St. Thomas, Augsburg, Hamline, Macalester or the Minneaplis Campus! BE involved! There is so much to do on campus, you're bound to find something you like. Participate in things and make new friends and you will have a good time!

    Bang for the buck

People are often scared away by the price of St Kates, as it is a private school, but I really feel like it will help me in the long run. The professors are very open to helping you inside and outside of class and making sure you understand the materials. Campus security does a fabulous job of making you feel safe by patroling and financial aid does a great job of helping you find a way to pay for school.

    Am enjoying being here

St. Kates is a very student involved campus. There are many fun events planned during the year including movies and musical performances. The end of the year culminates with a celebration called Dew Drop Bop which includes games, music, food and a ton of fun! There is also a wide variety of student groups to participate in.

    Am learning a lot

The things I learn in class, I can connect to my outside life. I took a history class last year and to help me study for the final, I watched Pearl Harbor at home and made connections! It was a fun way to help me study! Believe it or not, I also make chemistry connections to things in my everyday life!

Great for these types of students

Those seeking a safe, highly acclaimed rigorous academic program, a good social life, and those seeking to expand their viewpoints and horizons.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let the all-women aspect of the college intimidate you. When I first visited I didn't think this school was an option, but once I went to the visit program I found myself fitting in here and I never dreamed of participating in single-gender education. I now find myself advocating for it because the benefits of being open and honest in my class discussions are no longer hindered by wondering what guys will think about me.

    Bang for the buck

Though the tuition seems outrageous, financial aid is easily attainable. No matter what your financial situation is, try for it, you may be surprised how generous the college is. The professors are very knowledgeable and approachable. Also, resources for tutoring, counseling, financial counseling and other issues are worth the price of the school, especially for that first year of adjustment. The food is delicious, but quite overpriced.

    Am enjoying being here

St. Kate's has a great campus life. The dorm life is a great balance of social and academic life. The food service always has a good variety. There are student activities throughout the week and on weekends that are entertaining. Most of their activities include free food and prizes given for just showing up! Everyone is very open-minded to others' personalities and beliefs and I've never felt put down because of my viewpoints on any issue. Everyone is open about opinions.

    Am learning a lot

The great thing about St. Kate's is the variety of learning styles they incorporate. The location of the school makes for great experiences learning in the community.

    Will learn a lot

I will do whatever to get to my goals and be the best learner that I am and will be willing to make a change.

    Tips for prospective students

Go check out the Highland area; there are great restaurants and stores there. There is also Grand Ave. where Tea Garden is located (best bubble tea ever).

    Bang for the buck

St. Kate's has wonder financial aid counselors and they are there to help you. St. Kate's offer many different scholarships to their students.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful. St. Kate is the only campus in the Twin Cities that has a pond. The students are very nice and everyone is very welcoming. The campus is located in the metro area which makes it easier to go shopping or go somewhere to hang out. The Mall of America is just a bus ride away. One of the biggest plus is that St. Kate's is an all women university and with guys it is a lot easier to express yourself.

    Am learning a lot

The professors are wonderful. The class sizes are small which makes it easier to interact with the professors. The professors are always available and willing to see you whenever you need help.

Great for these types of students

If you are a student who loves meeting new people, learn about different cultures and challenge yourself then this is the right place for you! Also, Saint Kates has a good nursing program, but it is really hard to get into it. Just work hard and believe in yourself!

    Bang for the buck

I love the Financial Aid here. Everyone is willing to help make college affordable because they are willing to sit down and talk with you and your parents about the cost and tuition here and how to pay for college

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here! Everyone is so nice and the staff are really wonderful. The teachers actually want to teach each and every student here. They are willing to spare their time to help the students understand, whether homework or other materials. I also love it here because everyone knows everyone. I especially love the clubs here because when you get involved, people start to know you more. Even if you are shy, there are people here who understand, so you can take your time to warm up. I also love it here because there are no boys to bother your studies and etc. I love how this school has an ACTC bus that takes students to different nearby colleges. This is where you can take different classes from other nearby colleges.

    Am learning a lot

I learned so much about myself here at Saint Kates, not only that, but I learned a lot about my critical thinking skills and how to improve on it. When I first started my fall here, we were given classes that helped us gained a better understanding about our own skills and how to improve them for college level. We also were given a course that has helped us engaged in class, embrace diversity and learn about the history of women here at Saint Kates. At first I thought that an all girls school was not my taste, but after spending a semester here, I have come to respect it.

    Campus Safety

Public Safety (campus security) may seem overbearing at times, but they do a great job of keeping the campus safe for students. St. Kate's is definitely a safe space.

    Greek Life

There is one sorority on campus, Lambda Sigma Tau. They are a social-service sorority working within the Twin Cities. Close ties to Theta Chi and Delta Tau at Hamline University and Sigma Chi at University of St. Thomas.

    What to do for fun

St. Kate's is in the heart of the Twin Cities! Downtown St. Paul is about a 5 minute drive down Randolph Avenue; Minneapolis is a few minutes away via 94. Parks, food, bars, concerts, theater, and way way more.

    Food and Dining

Not much to say, other than it could have more options.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are pretty nice, especially the new suites (Rauenhorst and Morrison). There is a low-key, quiet vibe to the campus which is relaxing, but there is always stuff going on on-campus and in the community.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're looking for a party school, St. Kate's is not it, but there are tons of things to do in the area and the Twin Cities. There is a great, safe, and comfortable small community feel to the campus. Going to an all-women's college threw me off a bit at first, but you will be amazed at how much more you learn simply by talking to other women.

    In three sentences

St. Catherine University will change the way you think. It challenges women (and men) to lead and influence. My life has changed because of this dynamic university!

Great for these types of students

Smart, driven, motivated, critical thinkers, healthcare majors

    Tips for prospective students

Don't worry about the whole all-girls thing, I was a little bit but it really isnt that bad and you can take classes at other surrounding schools through the ACTC program.

    Bang for the buck

Although it is a pretty expensive school, St. Kate's gives out many scholarships. The education you receive is definitely worth your money.

    Am enjoying being here

It has a very pretty campus and a lot of great people. People are willing to help out, and easy to make friends.

    Am learning a lot

St. Catherine University is a great place to learn, there are many majors to choose from and many classes to just take for fun as well. The class sizes are pretty small, so the teachers actually knows you at a more personal level and love to help you.

Great for these types of students

Student parents, Part-time/Weekend students, students who learn best in discussion-based classes, QGLBT students, students of different ethnicities and backgrounds, students who want to study abroad. Also great for students who want to start their major right away versus just getting generals done.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not let the cost of attendance scare you away! This college offers a ton of financial aid and grants. Just to be sure to have all of your financial information in by their deadlines to ensure you will get all the aid you can. Also, it is an all womens school (basically). This is one of my biggest negatives when I was considering this school. But actually, it turned out to be a positive. I have found that learning in an all women environment causes classroom discussions to go further and be more open versus a class with men. Many students I have spoken with feel the same way.

    Bang for the buck

An expensive college- but they offer a ton of financial aid, and charge small late fees.

    Am enjoying being here

Its a small, beautiful campus! Lots of places to study, and everyone is so nice.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers are awesome, and it feels like they care a lot more about their students versus other schools. Class sizes are usually around 30 students, so its easier to get help.

Great for these types of students

St. Catherine's University would be a wonderful school for those whom are looking for additional help in the overall school experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Not to focus on how you will get through the whole duration of college, but rather to look at it one week at a time or at most one semester at a time. Do not procrastinate.

Great for these types of students

    strongly liberal women, feminists

    Bang for the buck

if you plan things right, by going to this school you will be saving tons of money! most girls graduate with about half as many loans as compared to what they would have at other private schools. many even graduate with no loans at all! with that being said however, you do compromise many areas of social life to save money by going to this school.

    What to do for fun

the highland area around the campus is very fun! however, if you do not have a car on campus (first years) it can be hard to find places to go. the school does have a great work out facility with a nice weight room, pool, and hot tub. they also offer classes throughout the week such as zumba and yoga as well that you won't want to miss.

    Food and Dining

the food is great if you are a vegetarian or vegan! for others it can get very old, very quick. the same rotation of meals is followed throughout the semester and the food is very expensive. first years are required to buy the most expensive plan and most of the girls ended with around $400 left unused (this in nonrefundable) because they were tired of the meals served.

    Dorm Life

the dorms are very lifeless. ra's are required to host events (usually a craft... yes it is an all girls college), however, these are more to meet their event quota, last about 30min, and are not really social events where you have fun with your floor. i only know about half of the girls who live on my floor of 40 and doors almost always remain shut.

    Academic Rigor

the generals have been nothing harder then i had taken in honors high school courses. ap and cis classes from high school you will find much harder then many of the classes at this school. the only class i found myself having to wonder and work for a grade was art. college art classes are not like high school classes, you no longer get graded on effort!

    Tips for prospective students

by going to this school you will be saving tons of money, however, you must be prepared to give up many other areas of the college experience to go here. be outgoing, this college will not help you find your place so you have no choice but to put yourself out there and find friends. get to know your professors, your paying to have a one on one relationship with them at this school.

    In three sentences

not very easy to find your place at this school right away. the schools program to integrate incoming freshman into the community is very weak and many girls on my floor have already transferred or dropped out of this school. not your typical catholic college experience: unique classes, very liberal, all girls, little catholic influence, yet very loving and helpful professors!

    What to do for fun

there is a lot of activities that you can do it just depends on the person.

    Food and Dining

the food is good. there is a supermarket in the school and it's like a mini grocery store. you can use your meal points there, which is what i do.

    Dorm Life

the dorm life is fun but it can be dull at times depending on who you know. however there is always things to do around campus. like movie night!!

    Academic Rigor

the classes are not that hard but they are interesting. i would suggest that you have a planner so you can be organized and not forget about assignments or wait until the last minute to do them.

    Tips for prospective students

make sure you talk to your professors and get to know them. they can be really helpful when you need them.

    In three sentences

st. catherine university is a really good school. you can find the answers to all of your questions in no time. the teachers are really helpful.

    Food and Dining

    Greek Life

our sorority is service based, and respected in the community. all other greek symbols represent honor societies, which are also awesome.

    Clubs and Activities

the multiple (perhaps too many?) student clubs and organizations are active in on campus as well as in the community. there's something going on every day of the week, and there are ample opportunities for leadership development, fun, socializing, and community service.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

i am so proud to attend a university that was started by the sisters of st. joseph. it was estimated that in the last 150 years, their kindness has in some way benefitted the lives of 3/4 of families in minnesota.

    Bang for the buck

yeah, it's pricey, but wow! they have fantastic financial aid. your investment will really pay off. with individual attention and coaching from professors and administrators, as well as invitations to twin cities private college symposiums, job fairs, and other events.

    What to do for fun

it's in the twin cities! so there is a lot going on off campus, as well as club events and events at other associated colleges of the twin cities (actc) schools. personally, i am in 5 clubs, and never have a dull moment.

    Food and Dining

the food and dining services are average. although there is a great variety, food nearly 24/7, and the food is often delicious, it is really really expensive. fortunately, events often have free food (and lots of it), and there are dozens of fantastic restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance.

    Dorm Life

i have never lived in a dorm.

    Academic Rigor

i wouldn't dare text in class - it's too interesting, and i'd be afraid to miss something! we're all focused on complete understanding and the bigger picture. some professors are not so demanding, but for others you will work your tail off.

    Tips for prospective students

participate in a tour or overnight stay to get a feel for the atmosphere yourself. take a look at the major fields of study. once you narrow it down a bit, read the course descriptions to see if you would like it.

    In three sentences

st. catherine university has nurtured my personal, social, and professional development, inspired and challenged me intellectually, and given me the freedom, strength, and skills to claim my education and my future.

    What to do for fun

i really don't have time to go party like all my roommates, because i go to school full time and also work on the weekends but when i do have the time i go out to eat or just take long walks.

    Food and Dining

at first i had problems with getting food so every week i went to my moms house to bring back left overs. dorm life was too expensive for and as for the food there was not a lot to choose from. i go out to eat with my friends sometimes. every time there is a free food activity at my school i was the first one there.

    Dorm Life

the advantages of living in a college dorm is i don’t have to drive to all the college activities, as well as from home. also, i don’t have to drive to class everyday. i don’t have to deal with paying rent or mom and dad. i have my own room here at st. catherine university and it is an amazing experience. you also have more opportunities to look around a new community and see what the town has to offer. some colleges may offer dorm students an advance over the other college students on tickets and drawings, and how they can get special school activities designed just for them.

    Academic Rigor

my toughest class was psychology in the first semester. it was challenging because i had test anxieties. although, i understood the material very well when it came to testing i blanked out. but thanks to my tutor i got over that and achieved a passing grade. i don't find most classes challenging it's just a lot of work and keeping up with the work.

    Tips for prospective students

my advice to prospective students is that its never too late for anything and if you want to achieve what ever you want it can happen. it just takes hard work and motivation to keep going once you start school.although st. kates is a private school that is expensive but if you really want to continue here you will find ways.

    Bang for the buck

Too expensive for a dismal education unless you are a Nursing Major. Well worth it for Nursing.

    What to do for fun

There are movie nights every two weeks with free popcorn. There are also many events with free food throughout the semester. On the weekends, get off campus and go into Highland. It is well worth the walk.

    Food and Dining

The food is good but can get expensive. The dining area is a bit far from upperclass(wo)men dorms.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at St. Kate's is thoroughly community driven. How close you and your floor mates are depends on your Resident Adviser. Good is good, bad is bad. The showers are not as dismal as one would assume but they are not fantastic either. The laundry is fairly priced and environmentally friendly.

    Academic Rigor

I chose a private school because I thought it would be more challenging than a public one. I was wrong. After my first semester of my freshman year I stopped buying my textbooks are just wrote notes in class. I got A's.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for as many outside scholarships as possible and expect a large increase in tuition each year.

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

If need be, just call campus security- they are more than willing to walk you out to your car if you don't feel comfortable walking alone. Especially at night.

Great for these types of students

    Literally anyone!

    Bang for the buck

Expensive, but you get what you pay for!

    What to do for fun

There are many different groups one can join, and many different activities that are always going on. The paths around the school are nice for walks, and there are many places to eat and hang out right in the neighborhood.

    Food and Dining

I do not eat on campus.

    Dorm Life

    Tips for prospective students

Budget! This university is expensive, but, as you will find out, it is well worth is.

    Campus Safety

Public safety is an on-campus joke. They are never available when a student actually needs help and they never do anything that actually benefit the students body.

    What to do for fun

There are weekly day brighteners and sometimes they have some good ones. Occasionally there will be an event on campus for students, but these aren't hosted very often.

    Food and Dining

The food is alright, but very repetitive. By the end of the year, very few people want to eat there anymore.

    Dorm Life

There is very little to do in the dorms. Unless you have money to pay for some of the activities, you won't be doing much. The dorm just becomes a place to sleep.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are relatively easy. I found this school to be easier than my high school classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay over night before making your final decision. If going to St. Kate's, try and know your major before arriving.

    In three sentences

Overall, mediocre. It's a small school where. I found it to be very hard to connect with anyone on campus.

We have Citizen Katie day where all students and alum across the country go and volunteer. There is also the famous albino squirrel who if seen, will grant you good luck on tests.

    Bang for the buck

This is an amazing college and is always willing to help people out whenever they are in need. They give good financial aid and has a lot of programs to help you. This is a pricey school but very well worth it for the education you will recieve.

    What to do for fun

There are always on campus events. They are a ton of fun and also usually have prizes. I won a camera once with my roomie who got a GPS. Also we have a game room where you can play the Wii or the Xbox kinect. We also have a pool and tons of classes like zumba or yoga. Take part in all the amazing clubs.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is now focused on nutritious meals and our coffee shop/ restaurant recently got remodeled. It is very clean and has a nice atmosphere. We have of course have soups, salad bar, Sushi (which is made right in front of you!!) and tons more. They also have a market place where you can your groceries. This is covered by meal points so there is no I can only eat twice a day. You can use them whenever and even in the marketplace.

    Dorm Life

I am in crandall hall and I love it! I know almost everyone in my dorm. I am in the smaller dorm but the room is a decent size and you can loft both beds if you are in either crandall or stanton. Of course it is a freshman dorm so not all new, but we do have those new water bottle/ fountain things. The sophomore and up buildings are great and are new. There are a lot of amenities provided.

    Academic Rigor

Nursing Majors be prepared to have a rigorous schedule. Don't worry though. The college helps prepare you and makes sure that you get up to that level of standard.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely do an overnight stay. It gives you a perspective of what students do and what activities are available. Do not be afraid of asking questions. They are going to be honest and that is the best way to learn. Don't be afraid to say hi everyone is super friendly. My first week I knew so many people and everyone is always very courteous.

There are so many activities that clubs and organizations put on weekly. They are almost always free and they are so much fun!

    Food and Dining

The dining hall is very updated and there are always a variety of food to chose from. There is unfortunately only one meal plan for incoming freshman, but for me it was just right.

    Dorm Life

St Marys Hall is by far the best residence hall to live in. If you prefer a smaller, quieter living space than I would suggest one of the other halls because St Marys is very large and always busy.

    Academic Rigor

Because it is a private school it is going to be much harder than any state school. But if you have the motivation to succeed, you will be successful.

    Tips for prospective students

Try not to think about the large tuition number when looking at the school. Because even though it was an issue for me, after all the scholarships, grants, and loans I received, it was no problem at all.

    In three sentences

St Catherine's is such a beautiful campus. It is extremely expensive but there are many loans and scholarships available. I really like it because it is close to my hometown, so it feels like home but still far enough away for me to be independent.

St. Kate's is very expensive, but they are willing to give you lots of scholarships if you're a smart and well-rounded student.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of events put on (especially movie nights) for resident students. They also have fund things like baseball games or plays for a very discounted price.

    Food and Dining

On weekends the food isn't great, but they try to have lots of options. It's just hard to eat the same types of food over and over. There also aren't a lot of healthy options, but you can always find something to eat. The fresh fruit is normally lacking.

    Dorm Life

This is a small school, and many people live close to campus, so many people go home for the weekends. Just try to make friends with your roommate or other people who live on your floor.

    Academic Rigor

Most teachers are very good at what they do, but some of the math and science teachers aren't fantastic, so taking a few classes at St. Thomas or another school might be helpful (which you can do free of charge if you're a registered St. Kate's student).

    Greek Life

    Some off-campus or through ACTC.

    Clubs and Activities

Oof. Well, there are 55+ clubs, aaaaand...well, I don't even really want to get into all the details. Check the website, or even better, take a tour!!! (Shameless plug, I know...but hey, that's what happens when you're a tour guide for a year.)

Great for these types of students

Women who are not only passionate about their education, but also passionate about their world. The CSJs founded St. Kate's on a basis of Social Justice and care for the neighbor without distinction, and those are ideals who still hold onto today. Whether you're an extrovert or an introvert, a Nursing student or a writer, St. Kate's gives you the opportunity to change your world in order to change the Earth. I know it sounds cheesy, but it's true. St. Kate's is NOT great for: Party-ers. Greek life-ers. Intolerance. Men. (Sorry, men.)

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hmmm, well, I'll let you hear about some of our more prominent, defining stories on your tour (ahem) but I *will* share a couple of lesser-known facts about St. Kate's. For one, St. Kate's is an unofficial squirrel sanctuary, and there is a family of albino squirrels on campus that are the secret love affair of many a closet naturist. (Ask any Katie about the albino squirrels. You'll see what I mean.) As for locations, right on the edge of campus is Carondolet village, where many of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet, who founded St. Kate's in 1905, still live. Well, not the Sisters from 1905. But women of the same order, anyway.

    Bang for the buck

Hey, I'm not going to lie. College is spendy, and St. Kate's is a private college. Luckily for folks like me and probably you (unless you have an extra forty-some thousand to spend on college every year,) St. Kate's gives fantastic financial aid. If you want to come, they're going to make it possible for you. And in return you get small class sizes and prof-to-student ratios, fantastic networking opportunities, a faith-based and inclusive atmosphere, and, of course, an excellent and thorough liberal arts education.

    What to do for fun

Well, St. Kate's is smack-dab in the middle of the Twin Cities of Minnesota, so there is plenty to do! On campus, the SKAT (St. Kate's Activities Team) plans tons of events to keep us busy in addition to all of the club sponsored events, Wildcat games, and residence life activities. Whether it's Bridesmaids being shown in the O'Shag Theater, a Division III tournament, or Defeat Voldemort Day, there's always something going on! Off campus the possibilities are almost limitless! St. Paul is the second largest theater city after New York, featuring venues such as the Guthrie, the Orpheum, and St. Kate's very own O'Shaughnessy (the second largest theater in the Twin Cities!) There is also the nearby Mall of America, the State Fair (on a stick) and Renaissance Festival, the Metrodome, nightclubs, other college campuses, restaurants, art galleries, the Science Museum....you name it, it's here!

    Food and Dining

So, I can't really give food and dining a 5 star rating because I feel like that would be silly. Everyone complains about food, it's true. BUT I would say we have some of the better dining around! The company that services St. Kate's is constantly working to improve and listen to the student body. Our cafeteria is stocked with a pasta bar, a salad bar, a sushi bar, a pizza bar, a couple other bars, (no alcoholic bars), and, of course, the all-important dessert bar. We recently renovated our coffeeshop and combined it with the Pulse, making what is now the Pulse Bistro, and we often feature entertainment from around the Twin Cities on the small stage or watch movies on the Pulse's projector screen. Finally, St. Kate's is striving to become greener and more local-food friendly--improvements still on their way!

    Dorm Life

This is a get-what-you-give relationship. A lot of St. Kate's students live off-campus, so the dorm life is pretty quiet. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in RA planning and such, but nobody is going to pull you out of your room and make you do stuff. I would rate dorm life here about a C average.

    Academic Rigor

Okay, so we're not Harvard. Sure, you can take a bunch of sluff-off classes; but if you're looking for the opportunity to use your noggin, St. Kate's won't let you down. We have as many postmodernism chats over coffee as the best of 'em.

    Tips for prospective students

#1: Visit campus! Our admissions staff work tirelessly to bring you to campus and insure you have a good time while here! (I should know...I worked in the Admissions office my Freshman year.) #2: Talk to people. On tour at St. Kate's you'll get regaled with stories and interesting facts, but there is nothing better than sneaking around on your own, running into students/professors, and TALKING. This goes for any college. If you want to see how campus actually works, walk down the hall between classes. People-watch shamelessly. I met three heads of departments who invited me to talk and/or come back to their office the first time I walked around St. Kate's. It was that friendliness and genuine interest that convinced me to come back for a second tour. #3: Stay overnight and take a class. Besides #2, there is nothing more impactful than spending a few days pretending like you're a college student. Check things out. Make some friends. Network network network!!! aaaaaaaaaaand #4: For those of you looking at St. Kate's, DON'T FREAK OUT. Yes, we are all women. It's actually awesome. I was apprehensive when I first came, and I'll admit, it took some adjustment...but now, I honestly don't realize/mind that there are no men in my classes, and it has become one of my favorite things about St. Kate's.

    In three sentences

St. Kate's might seem intimidating at first; it is an all-female college, after all; but don't let that scare you off! Being a Katie means knowing who you are, what you stand for, and making a difference. St. Kate's is a place for any woman who considers herself nontraditional in any sense, and the support this University exudes is what has made it the largest women's university in the US.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is taken serious. I feel pretty secure.

    Clubs and Activities

There is ALWAYS something going on! A meeting, a show, a movie, a trip, etc.

Great for these types of students

Open-minded students, willing to challenge themselves in rigorous courses and pretty much any person can find a niche on campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The orientation festivities are very interactive! You meet you're fellow katies and you're always on your feet. The very last ceremony is the best. All cultures and traditions are respected, and for the most part are celebrated/ honored in one way or another.

    Bang for the buck

The college comes with a pretty price tag, but it's definitely work every penny. The campus, the outstanding professors, opportunities and the activities offered (the events are usually free admission, provide food and fun prizes) are all worth it alone. Financial aid is great!

    Food and Dining

For college food, this stuff is GREAT! They offer vegetarian options and sushi as well. My favorite thing to eat would be the two cheese panini.

    Dorm Life

The dorms could be better, but they are the basic bed, desk, closet and window type of deal. Each floor of a building shares a community restroom with plenty of stalls, showers and sinks. Unless you request a room with your own private restroom. The restrooms are kept clean and working.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are challenging. They call for you to be mature, but at the same time, the environment the professors create is casual and welcoming. The O'Neill center is a great place for tutoring, support and other student services.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the college! Try the food, sit in a few classes and talk to the students, faculty and staff. They are very welcoming and will answer any question you might have. Note: If you're from the South, be sure to visit during the winter and spring seasons so you get a feel of what you're in for. Be sure to bundle up!

    Campus Safety

There is campus security patrolling 24/7, and people on call at all times. There have also been emergency boxes installed all around campus, which can be used to signal public safety. As greater reassurance, these boxes were installed around 20 years ago and have not been used once (except for testing)!

    Clubs and Activities

There are 50+ clubs and organizations for a wide variety of interests, such as the ASL club, Food Justice Coalition, Multicultural Society, and many others. It is also possible to start your own.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who want to make a difference, either in their community or around the world. The faculty and leaders here are so inspiring, and there's many options to get involved in volunteer and community work.

    Bang for the buck

While being a private college, St. Kate's does offer many scholarship and financial aid opportunities which makes it more affordable.

    What to do for fun

There's an activities team which plans tons of awesome events every weekend, along with extra events for special occasions like holidays, finals, and current events. Many times, these events are free and have prized too! St. Kate's is also located in the middle of St. Paul, where there is always something going on around campus as well.

    Food and Dining

The dining services provide lots of different options, from soups, salad bar, make your own sub, make your own pasta, burgers, fruit bar, international, and classics section. While it tastes pretty good and has many healthy and local food options, some feel that it still just doesn't replace good old home cooking.

    Dorm Life

The upperclassman dorms are extremely nice, but the freshman dorms are a little dated. There are three dorms total, two holding 50 students each and one holding 200 students. The two smaller dorms are pretty new to campus, so they are pretty nice, but the biggest dorm is quite old. However, the showers work, the toilets are clean, and there's running water. There's also a computer lab and two lounges, which are nice.

    Academic Rigor

The coursework here is meant to be stimulating. This means that students are encouraged to be actively engaged in class discussions and the material is largely based on concepts rather than just facts.

    Tips for prospective students

For students planning on attending here, I would strongly encourage all students to try to connect with their professors. The school is rather small (around 2,000 undergrads total), so often times the professor will know their students by name. This opens up great opportunities to get one on one communication with the professors, which is extremely helpful in classes and school in general.

    In three sentences

St. Catherine University (St. Kate's) places a huge emphasis on leadership and community. This shows up in many of the classes offered here in the form of discussions and community service based learning. While challenging, it is also very rewarding.

    Campus Safety

The St. Paul campus is very safe, and is in a safe neighborhood. Security is fairly slow however. Some of the associates programs are located on the Minneapolis campus (students only go there for classes usually, all typical undergrad is on the St. Paul campus). The Minneapolis campus is not in a safe location and parking is horrible.

    Greek Life

There is technically a large sorority (80 new pledgers this year), but they are not based on the St. Kate's campus due to some poor incident a long time ago.

    Clubs and Activities

There is always something going on on campus.

Great for these types of students

I'm not going to make that call. We are a large women's university with a Catholic background, leadership mission, and a lot of liberal events.

Um... there may be many. Fontebonne is a building built by two Catholic Sisters who could decide on a layout, so they split the building in two and designed it separately. There is literally a wall down the middle that makes it very unique.

    Bang for the buck

You get a great experience, but like all places you get out what you put in.

    What to do for fun

Go to on-campus events, Highland Park movies and shopping, the Mall of America (via light rail), or just hang out.

    Food and Dining

For a university, the choices are stupendous. The price is a bit much and you have to have a meal plan when on campus. There are a lot of free food events and the cafeteria and new bistro options are good. Campus is within 3 blocks of Highland Park-located restaurants (fast-food, sit down, and grocery), so if you can't find what you want you can easily access something else. Most places also deliver.

    Dorm Life

The RAs (resident advisors) are pushed heavily to make programs and build community, and it works. The new buildings aren't that great, but the old ones have great facilities--if you get a room before they run out.

    Academic Rigor

The sciences are improving their organization and have good standards. Many of the discussion-based undergrad courses are a bit up in the clouds, but teachers typically put effort in developing student's abilities to work with the topic. Tests and papers are college-grade.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus to get a feel for the community.

    In three sentences

Small discussion-based learning promotes critical thinking, personal growth and engagement. A wide variety of clubs and a multitude of activities try to get students together. A peaceful campus in St. Paul, next to major public transit routes gives you access to anything you can't find on campus (although everything is available on-campus).

    Campus Safety

I never felt unsafe on campus. That being said, St. Kate's Public Safety department has a very high turnover rate and seemingly does not properly train all of their security officers. Parking tickets are frequently given for little or no reasoning, and officers tend to be rude upon approaching them. These issues are only minor, however, and I would rather be complaining about these than an issue much greater and more dangerous.

    Clubs and Activities

If you want to get involved, you must got to the Student Organization Center in Couer de Catherine! There you can learn about all of St. Kate's clubs and activities. I highly encourage all students to join at least one club, sport, or activity as extracurriculars look fantastic on resumes and can be excellent stress relievers!

Great for these types of students

Studious, motivated, creative, and free-spirited students would definitely feel welcome at St. Kate's! Non-traditional students and students looking for a new or different career would also feel at home.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

St. Kate's is rich in history and taking a campus tour is both informative and interesting. Whether it be Fontbonne Hall, a building that was built with two completely different architectural styles in mind, Derham Hall, the campus' first building, or Dew Drop Pond, St. Kate's stories truly make it a wonderfully unique school. Make sure to ask about the building of the foundation for Mendel Hall!

    Bang for the buck

Though St. Kate's was expensive, I would not trade the education I earned there for anything. St. Kate's is a highly recognized and respected school both inside and outside of Minnesota, which provides a vast number of opportunities for its students and alumnae.

    What to do for fun

There is always something going on on campus! St. Kate's is home to the O'Shaughnessy Auditorium, the second largest theater in St. Paul. Many dance troupes, musical artists (such as Norah Jones, Chastity Brown, and Dessa), and speakers (including Maya Angelou) perform on the O'Shaughnessy stage at various points during the year. Furthermore, St. Kate's has 50+ student organizations and musical ensembles that students can partake in.

    Food and Dining

Food and dining plans are one of the few areas that St. Kate's could stand to improve upon. Food is slightly above mediocre and the meal points plans are nowhere near ideal. However, since St. Kate's is surrounded by the glorious city of St. Paul, there are numerous places to eat out or to shop for groceries.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dorms for all four years and enjoyed every minute of it. My best friends are the girls that I met in the dorms. When you spend a large majority of your time studying, it becomes incredibly convenient to have your best friends live down the hall from you for those occasional study breaks.

    Academic Rigor

St. Kate's is an academically demanding school. Be prepared to master material as opposed to just memorizing it. What you get out of your education is truly reflective of the time and effort you put into it. St. Kate's will prepare you in such a way that you will be a highly viable candidate for entering the working world or for graduate school.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not let a small, all-women's, liberal arts school scare you away. St. Kate's is a beautiful little campus in the heart of a big city. There are a myriad of opportunities available to students both within and outside of campus limits. If St. Kate's seems daunting due to financial means, contact the Office of Financial Aid; they are more than willing to assist you with financial planning, as well as with scholarship and grant opportunities.

    In three sentences

St. Kate's is a phenomenal school that engages women in rigorous study and encourages them to be leaders in their communities. The incredible mentorship and support I received from my professors at St. Kate's has gone unmatched, even as I pursue my education at the graduate level. Having a degree from this wonderful school has allowed for more opportunities than I could have ever imagined, and the person I have become is largely due to the positive experiences I had at St. Kate's.

    Bang for the buck

The buildings are right each other so it is not easy to get lost on campus. The people there are very nice and helpful and can help with questions or concerns.

    What to do for fun

There is a game room in the main building called the CDC. There are video games, music, and a pool table that can be rented out with a student card. There is also a gym in another building where you can play basketball, volleyball, soccer, badminton, a swimming pool and exercise.

    Food and Dining

The food is great and very tasty. There are many varieties and different selections.

    Dorm Life

The dorm rooms are very livable and nice. It could be improved by students cleaning much more efficiently by the end of each term.

    Academic Rigor

The professors challenge students to think outside the box and apply their learning to everyday life.

    Tips for prospective students

Be ready to do a lot, but also to learn a lot from the classes.

    In three sentences

Great for these types of students

Those desiring an All-Women's experience, not wanting guys around, those who wish to express themselves.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

All-Women's University, albino squirrels, Harry Potter dorm living opportunity, lots of choices for food, monthly local artist concerts.

    Bang for the buck

If you want a great college education, this place gives out great scholarships and has amazing classes. If you want the social aspect of a college, not so great a place for your money.

    What to do for fun

Movie nights, free popcorn Fridays, events put on by the student activity organization (SKAT) and a close walk to the Mississippi River and trails.

    Food and Dining

I am a simple, plain eater and often would find eating to be a bother. The food is very American, very greasy stuff. And the meal point system is ridiculous for first-years. I prefer to cook my own food.

    Dorm Life

Not the best, but what do you expect from a first-year dorm? The highlights are: cleanliness, free laundry and computer lab.

    Academic Rigor

The reason I still love this school regardless of the lack of socializing... the academics! I find myself challenged, but not over-whelmed. The professors make you think, and value your thoughts and educated opinions.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you visit this university before you attend.

    Campus Safety

I have only been at the campus in the summer so far, however, there are classes and activities taking place when I have been there, and I have seen little to no security measures.

    Greek Life

When I attended a tour of the campus our tour guide was asked if there were any sororities on campus and I believe we were told that they are not. I personally like this because the itself school focuses on positive aspects that greek life provide and what I (as an older student) view as less important (parties etc) are not done.

    Clubs and Activities

Seems like there is a lot to offer for students that both live on campus and those that commute to campus. There are exercise classes, movies shown in the O'Shaunassy auditorium, and lots of groups/clubs to join.

Great for these types of students

To me this is a great school for anyone who is genuinely interested in learning since the school was founded on the idea of educating women to better their lives. This is not a party school, and not a place to take easy classes and just enjoy the college experience.

    Bang for the buck

In my opinion this school is very expensive, however, the school provides their own scholarships which helps with the cost. After transferring from a community college I found the cost per credit to be a blow to the system.

    What to do for fun

There is a great theater on campus that has musicians, dance and a variety of other shows at it rather often as well as movies that are shown in the theater for students. Games can be rented from the information office, there is a great gym and pool in the Butler building. And let's not forget that you are in downtown St Paul, this means you are minutes away from the science museum, lot of places for live music, great running/biking trails etc...

    Food and Dining

There are a few great restaurants around town (Cecil's deli is fantastic), as far as what is offered on campus there is one cafeteria and it has a general caf. area and a nicer caf© off of it which seems to have nicer/more expensive offerings.

    Dorm Life

I live off campus so this is something that I cannot rate

    Academic Rigor

I have not attended classes as of yet but I know many alumni of this school and academics are important to the school.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a planning on transferring to St Kate's it is important to know, before you get serious about attending, which classes will transfer in and towards your degree.

    Greek Life

Lamda Sigma Tau is on campus, plus several honor societies.

    Clubs and Activities

Fifty plus clubs and societies call St. Kate's home, each with their own schedule of activities.

Great for these types of students

Women who want to become influential leaders and break out of their shells will succeed here. You must be willing to take chances and step outside of your comfort zone.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Dew Drop Pond has tons of ducks every year and is the source of the Dew Drop Bop's name. DDB is an end of the year party thrown to send students off with a bang each year. The chapel on campus is named Our Lady of Victory and, along with several other unusual buildings, owes its existence to Mother Antonia McHugh, an awesome nun.

    Bang for the buck

Classes are small and professors know your name and are willing to meet in person and go over tests and papers. Food is a bit overpriced, but you can get smaller meal plans as the years go by. Campus is gorgeous, and the surrounding area is well connected to the main city by bus and light rail. Tuition is pretty high, but around 90 percent of students receive financial aid from the school. Study abroad resources are excellent.

    What to do for fun

Check out the weekly SKAT events, and make sure to look around the Twin Cities area for fun events. Buses and light rail are easily available to get to the Mall of America, sports stadiums, museums, and shopping centers. There are plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. Campus clubs also hold events ranging from dances to movie nights and everything in between. With over 50 clubs and societies on campus, there will always be something to do or see.

    Food and Dining

The food served in the Cafeteria and the Pulse is good but becomes repetitive over time. Dining services are good about offering vegetarian and vegan options, generally, and focus on local food whenever possible. Desserts are a specialty at St. Kate's, so you can expect something good if you have a sweets craving. Students in the dorms are required to purchase a meal plan specified by year. The plans give points instead of meals, and do not roll over to the next semester. Completely overpriced and annoying.

    Dorm Life

There are three first year dorms and six upperclassman dorms located on campus. This is a bit of a suitcase campus, meaning that lots of students leave campus on the weekends, so activities on campus can be hard to find. However, this began changing in 2012, with residence life, RHA, SKAT, and other groups making an effort to plan fun activities for the weekend. There are several theme floors, including Gryffindor Tower, the Health and Wellness Floor, and ASL community, and the Honors floor. Dorms are all female with a curfew for having men on campus.

    Academic Rigor

Make no mistake - you will be writing here quite a bit. Four writing intensive classes are required to graduate, plus standard and not so standard liberal arts classes. Expect to be challenged and embrace it!

    Tips for prospective students

This is an all women university - know what you're getting into and embrace it. However, this school is part of the ACTC system, meaning that students from four other coed schools take classes here as well. Dress for the weather - Minnesota is cold and snowy in the winter, and there are no skyways or tunnels for getting around campus. Explore the campus and the city - there are lots of cool places hidden on campus and the surrounding area is full of fun shops and restaurants.

    In three sentences

St. Kate's is an amazing school with a focus on turning students into leaders with a strong sense of social justice and the ability to thrive. Classes are small and discussion based, so your professors know you by name and are able to answer your questions directly - not through an assistant. Campus life is a little sleepy at times, but the activities team makes sure to throw weekly events, as well as free concerts and movie nights.

    Dorm Life

    Campus Safety

Public Safety is always driving around. They do free jump starts in the winter if your car doesn't work. They can walk you to your car at night if you're at school late. It's the safest place to be. However, St. Thomas on the other hand always has people stealing, breaking in to cars, etc.

    Clubs and Activities

The Activity Fair has it all, and if there''s not a club that you don't see that you want to be in, then that's rare.

There are two dining cafeterias. The Pulse is the most popular where students buy coffee, smoothies, baked goods, pastas, pizzas, and other stuff handmade. It is somewhat pricey, but the food is delicious. The other cafeteria offers a select variety of food from burgers to gluten-free to sushi to sandwiches, etc.) And then there's the market place where girls go for chips, ramen noodles, candy, drinks, cereal for quick pick-ups.
