With all the things to do on and around campus it can be tempting to go out with friends all the time instead of study but I believe you really want to succeed here you have to find a healthy balance of school and fun. It's okay to say no to friends sometimes.

Attend any and all preparation activities and events for new students once you receive your acceptance letter if at all possible. Take a campus tour to familiarize yourself with the area, and make sure you speak to an advisor as soon as possible- even before the advising and registration day- especially if you are a transfer student. Some majors are not offered, though pre-programs may be, so even if your intended major isn't listed, it's worthwhile to look into SCSU as an option since tuition is cheaper than many larger and private universities, and it really doesn't mater where you get your prerequisites finished, as long as they apply to your major. SCSU has a reputation as a party school. The local police are not forgiving nor are full time non-collegiate city residents. The best advice I can give both as a long time resident as well as an older student is that while you are here, you need to stay focused on your education, so you don't end up leaving on probation.

Get involved as soon as possible, there are endless opportunities to. Do not fall into the habit of partying, it may be a party school but there is so much more you can get out of college without the parties every night.

Don't get your liberal arts out of the way right away, you will regret it when you just have classes in your intended major. Also, live in the dorms your first year. This way you can make friends!

Do your research. Make sure you and your future school fit together. Introduce yourself to the town in which the campus sits.
