    Great for these types of students

    Stanford is great for students who are serious about their schoolwork and passionate about their interests and love a collaborative environment. Stanford definately more relaxed than comparable east coast schools and that fosters creativity and an open community. So its perfect for students who might have felt a bit restricted by their highschool for whatever reason. It is a chance to grow and explore and have plenty of support if that brilliant idea of yours is begging to be more than just an idea in your head.

    Be yourself in your application. Stanford really is looking for students that will bring something unique (themselves!) to campus
    Bang for the buck

    Places like UCLA are just as expensive for an out of state student but the research opportunities and general class sizes are much smaller. Stanford is worth every penny

    The sheer diversity of classes is amazing and the quarter system means that you have the opportunity to take a lot of them without overloading youself

    Great for these types of students

    Students who expect fun and a good education not to be mutually exclusive; students who have worked hard, given themselves lots of opportunities, and want lots of time to explore their possibilities before they settle down; students who want to live and study in a diverse, tolerant, and modern environment, with common-sense rules and a great deal of trust. I also found Stanford made the transition to independent living very gentle, making it a great choice for the not-so-independent teenager (but don't interpret this as a negative if you're the opposite!).
    Tips for prospective students

    I recommend applying Early Action if Stanford is your first choice. Your chances of being accepted will not be significantly better (so they tell us, and I believe them), but if you get in, the notification comes early enough that you may be able to skip some of the more arduous college applications. Harvey Mudd and Caltech were on my list, and I was very glad not to have to answer their tricky essay questions.
    Bang for the buck

    I won't lie: Stanford is expensive. Their need-based-only scholarship policy makes paying for Stanford about the same difficulty for everyone except the super-rich, so those whose families have very little money are not that much worse off - in fact, overcoming economic hardship often makes for a particularly good application. I was lucky to have parents who were very smart in saving for my college education, but the economic downturn means I will still need extra funds in order to pay for all four years. (I am on Cappex, after all, primarily for scholarships.) Still, Stanford has more than enough bang to make up for its buck. Don't let the money keep you from applying.

    If there's anything more remarkable than Stanford's academics, it's the enjoyment that comes with being a student there. The campus and weather are lovely, the classes are interesting, and the extracurriculars are abundant. I've particularly enjoyed being part of Stanford's wonderfully wacky band, who will teach you to play an instrument if you want.
    Am learning a lot

    One does not get to be a professor at Stanford without being pretty brilliant. Some are better teachers than others, but even my least favorite classes (the freshman core humanities and writing) have given me their share of enlightenment, and my favorite ones (I highly recommend Computer Science 106A) are nothing short of fascinating.

    Don't change your lifestyle to fit the mold you think Stanford wants. Do what you're passionate about, and do it well.

    Although tuition is steep, Stanford's financial aid is extremely generous, so cost really shouldn't hinder anyone's ability to attend. Furthermore, the opportunities Stanford has for motivated students is well worth the cost.

    Stanford is a great mix of work and play. When you're studying, it's wonderful to be around people who are excited about learning. When you're partying, its great to be with people who know how to let loose and be a little crazy.
    Am learning a lot

    Professors and students alike are passionate about what they do, and are eager to share it if you show interest. You will learn as much from the people in your dorm as you will being in class, and it's wonderful.

    Stanford has all kinds of people, but I would generally say that everyone is very enthusiastic about everything they do. This is actually pretty easy, because there are so many awesome clubs and activities available. People smile :)

    BE YOURSELF in your application. If you're quirky, you're quirky. If you're not, you're not. Be deeply honest about your life goals. Getting into college isn't just about meeting their standards but also playing a part in their student body, and if you're not going to be a good fit, you're not going to be happy. Luckily, Stanford's students are diverse in every possible way... except maybe in level of intellectual vitality. Also, if you're a fantastic student but are still not sure about your chances, APPLY. Trust me, pretty much everyone wonders how they got here, and when everyone feels like that, everyone feels NORMAL—a utopia-like normal!

    Stanford has one of the best financial aid programs around. Period. Several of my friends found it was cheaper to attend Stanford than their state school.

    Love the people (including upperclassmen), love the campus, love the classes (my required introductory to the humanities course is more iffy, but some people really like theirs, and everything else is so dang INTERESTING and even FUN), love the activities and events, love the weather!
    Am learning a lot

    The best thing about Stanford is that you learn so much from your peers. Of course you will take engaging courses, but your friends will teach you just as much through their diversity and personal accomplishments.

    Extracurricular-oriented, activists, travelers. The architecture of Stanford is also to be appreciated, so if you're the type of person who enjoys that you would find it a good fit.

    This is definitely a tougher school to get into, but try applying even if you think it's a reach! You never know unless you try.

    You will find yourself questioning if you were smart enough to attend Stanford, but once you find something you care those doubts will disappear. Get involved in some groups and organizations and take advantage of the resources available.

    It may be expensive, but the financial aid system is amazing. Applying will do you no harm because if you are accepted and money is a problem, Stanford will be able to help you.

    Outside of the classroom, Stanford is great. You can find a club and organization that fits your interests. If not, Stanford is very open to letting students start new organizations.

    Every class teaches me something new. It does not matter if I am in an electrical engineering design class or a Brazilian film studies class. The teachers and other students motivate you to learn.

    Great parties. You can choose to drink or not and still feel like you belong. First week takes us on a scavenger hunt through San Francisco with your dorm mates!

    Amazing opportunity to follow your passion and explore new passions. Work load is substantial, but not overwhelming. Take courses you already have some knowledge of during your first quarter to allow yourself to ease into college academics.

    Students do not like harsh weather. Students who have bikes. Students who have ever had to urge to go swimming in public fountains. Students who enjoy parties (but you can avoid them if you don't). Students who enjoy academic challenges. Students who want to study abroad.
    Tips for prospective students

    Do not be discouraged to apply. They are looking for uniqueness and dedication into whatever you do. I had no hopes of actually making it, but I got in! I have an SAT score of 1810, which is lower than a lot of my friends who did not make it in.

    Stanford helped me out a lot when I applied. They gave me about 40,000 dollars as a financial aid scholarship to help pay for my first year.
    Will enjoy being here

    The campus is great. You're allowed to hop into the fountains and be a crazy teenager. The sunlight especially releases endorphins into the human body, making Stanford a happy environment. The food also, in my opinion, is great; my favorite dishes belonging to the Asian themed kitchen.
    Will learn a lot

    After attending their Admit Weekend, I was exposed to a variety of options to choose for. Stanford advocates that students obtain knowledge in as many areas as possible. They have doctors who are lawyers and poets who have economics majors.

    Anyone! Really. While it is academically rigorous, I have friends from all backgrounds -- artists, performers, scientists, philosophers, readers, athletes, more. Know who are you are and what strengths you have and use them! Don't be arrogant, but also don't be bashful or shy. Represent yourself.

    Dig deep. Both into yourself to find out what type of school you're looking for, what you want out of college, how you want these crucial years to go, etc, as well as into what the schools you're considering espouse as their own priorities and atmospheres. Visit, if you have the chance. Look up student reviews, websites beyond the university's official website. Be persistent. Get in contact with professors, students.

    Stanford is expensive. It's hard to pay for. However, the school does what it can to help you out if you are in serious financial need. I am on the border; it's hard to pay for and is financially stressful, but my family can, in the end, afford it. At times I wonder if it's entirely worth it, but I haven't yet found a reason to believe it's a waste.

    It's taken me a while to find my niche as Stanford... and truth be told, I am not certain that I've totally settled in. But I have no doubt that there is a place for me here -- as well as a place for you. It has been somewhat difficult for me to meet people to make friends, but I have found that most everyone here is friendly, and EVERYONE has something incredibly unique about them; it just takes some digging to find out what it is. The campus is beautiful, the opportunities seemingly endless... figure out what you like to do through experimentation and being open, and you will no doubt meet others who love what you do (from sports to knowledges to gaming to juggling to drinking to kite-flying... it's all there).
    Am learning a lot

    Yes -- you WILL learn a lot at Stanford! From classes about subjects you've wanted to study for years, to classes about topics you've never dreamed of studying, you will learn tremendous amounts. Many classes rely on self-motivated research and application, and some others will be simply informative and fascinating without the requirement of outside research and thought. You'll find a variety of students in any class (some only there for GenEd reqs, some with related majors, some oddballs, some grad students) and will be able to find your place within that, learning both from the usually dedicated professors as well as your fellow students.

    The kinda lazy smart kids-the ones who aren't the uber-nerds (a la east coast schools), but still get great grades and do all the extracurriculars without really studying a ton. Also, if you're looking for an academic challenge, balanced with loads of extras and the California life, this is it.

    Start planning on going here early. Have a pretty good idea on what you're planning to study, at least a general direction you want to go.

    The architecture everyone gushes about is truly beautiful, so there won't be any problems with a less-than-stellar campus. The people are very friendly, even the complete strangers you see biking around. There are numerous places to hang out and tons of activities to join, so there's no way you can be bored.
    Will learn a lot

    Stanford focuses on breadth in the first two years, with classes across different disciplines. Then they focus on depth. You don't have to declare a major until your junior year. This method exposes you to a lot of different, interesting subjects-there have been students who have loved one class they had so much that they completely changed their major to study that. Stanford is at the apex of everything, so you can rest assured you will learn what you want to learn, and then some.

    Stanford is the place for brilliant, well-rounded people. Hardworking, driven people who want more than what life gives them and will push for it. The students here are proud of the fact that we can work hard and play hard. It is rare to find a person here who just studies all the time. My first party was a shock, that is for sure- it was a typical college party. But there is no pressure to party or drink, everyone is really accepting :] You can really be who you are here. So people here are intelligent and know how to let their crazy out.

    Stanford wants passionate people. If you can show that you have something that no one else does and that you're passionate about it, and you have good grades, then you have a chance of getting in.

    Speaking of money, the school's gotta get it from somewhere. Stanford has excellent financial aid….if you’re poor or rich, but not if you’re in between. But the price is very much worth it, with all the resources and opportunities available to you. And a degree from Stanford is pretty much a guaranteed job after graduation. This is an investment in your future.

    It can be a bit intimidating when your classmates have already done so much, but for the most part everyone is laid back and humble that you don’t have to worry. They really are great people. It’s the atmosphere of the school to be really nice and accepting. People around here actually say Hi when they walk past you. It is great being here because the school trusts and supports you so much- you can basically do anything you want. There are many resources available if you need any sort of help. Stanford’s got the money.

    The college experience is more than just classes. Academics are just one part of Stanford life. The real difficult part is balancing your classes with all your extracurricular and social life. Yes, classes are difficult, but classes at any college will be. Here at Stanford you are surrounded by such brilliance, it pushes you to learn more about life and other perspectives. If Stanford accepts you, they have faith that you can do it! Here it’s hard to get an A, but also hard to get a C. I have yet to be super disappointed by a class here. (Though the math department is not really for ....normal people....it's pretty heavy in theoretical stuff and a bit disorganized, but it's really because the professors are so deep into mathematics that the department's like that. And the math majors here dig it. There's really a place for everyone here.) Anyways, each class I have taken, even the dreaded Ihum (Intro to humanities) and other GERs have been spectacular, and that is because the professors are really enthusiastic about what they are teaching. And if they don't seem that way on the outside, just visit them in office hours, they go crazy! Try googling some of the professors too. Sometimes us students take it for granted that we have world-renown faculty. My mind was blown when I researched my advisers and professors. It's really great because they are so approachable. The school makes it hard to fail, if you do, it really is your own fault.

    don't panic, be real and accept the fact that if you are accepted you will no longer be the top student or top athlete because you will be surrounded by greatness but you will be accepted and it will be your family before the 1st quarter is over.

    Those who... Don't quite know what they want to study yet. Like being busy ALL of the time. Like fast-paced classes, on the quarter system. Want to try new things in a fun and supportive environment. Like sun. Want to be spoiled.

    Check out QuestBridge (dot) org. Visit. Talk to current students who aren't your friends and ones who are. Don't limit yourself. Put the effort into your applications and you won't regret it.

    Best financial aid package. Hands down. If money is a big issue, Stanford is a QuestBridge Partner College and will give you a full ride and admit you early if you qualify for the low-income application.

    I love the people, but I admit that I am overwhelmed with the opportunities. The classes are very fast paced and there is a lot of pressure (which one can resist) to be occupied with something productive all of the time. The city is a little farther when you're a freshman without a car (1.5 hour train ride). I love it.

    All of the professors and fellows that are directly involved in your education are more than happy to help you when you're struggling. The classes are interesting, the pace is fast (thank you quarter system), and you learn the most from the people that you interact with, especially your peers and dormmates.

    For students applying: be yourself. Don't stress out over the applications. Have fun with them, they'll see that in your application. Also, don't worry about not knowing what to study, you can discover that here. There are many opportunities for that. For students going: Don't doubt yourself during your college life: you are good enough if you got in. Don't waste energy thinking you are not good enough. Relax and enjoy college; it is a time for growth and learning, and not only in the academics. :)

    Tips for prospective students

    Stanford wants students who are well rounded and distinct from other students. A friend of mine who was accepted into Stanford had the best grades and was involved in sports and other clubs like all the other students who apply to Stanford, but he had something that distinguished him from the competition. He started up a program at his high school that allowed mentally/physically challenged kids of all ages in his town to participate in sports in a league that he organized and ran. Now, I am not saying that you need to start something up at your school, but what you do need to do is find ways to distinguish yourself from the competition. When you are filling out the application and writing that personal statement, talk about what you do and/or what about you makes you different from other students who are applying.

    One thing that is really intimidating is the price of this school, with good reason. Stanford is not a cheap school and their financial aid goes off of a need based system so it is hard to get aid. But do not let that prevent you from applying. It is important that you see college as an investment in your future. Stanford or any other university that is really expensive may seem like it is not worth it because of the cost, but it is important to see things in the long run. Your experience at Stanford will open up many career opportunities that you cannot get else where. I am looking at Stanford for graduate school because of the research opportunities available to their engineering students. I know it will be expensive, but it will pay off in the end.

    The campus is absolutely beautiful. I was amazed at what I saw. There is a lot of things to do on campus that will keep a student very happy. Its location is really sweet since it is located close to the bay, so opportunities to do things off campus are really numerous. I am a huge sports guy and I love Stanford's athletic program. If you love sports, you are going to have a lot of fun going to all sorts of athletic events.

    There is a reason why Stanford is the one of the top universities in the nation. Top notch professors and top notch facilities.

    Campus Safety

    The campus is very sprawled out and easily accessible, and this can be dangerous. However, Pal Alto is a good area and as long as you are not walking alone or leave your door and window constantly open, there is little danger. Also, there are emergency towers all over campus, and if anything happens, everyone associated with the school is notified by the SU safety alerts.
    Greek Life

    I personally am not planning on Greek Life, but it is a great social tool. Although a small percentage of the population at Stanford is Greek, those who are really enjoy it. http://osa.stanford.edu/greek/
    Clubs and Activities

    Great for these types of students

    Stanford is ideal for students who are driven and willing to work hard at a goal while simultaneously exploring different sorts of academic and social interests. There are so many opportunities available that is is important to have an open mind.

    I have not had my Stanford undergaraduate experience yet, but not once have I heard of or spoken to someone who does not love it. Yes, it is stressful and you will work hard but most everyone would not trade those four years for anything or have made a different decision. However, it is a private university and very expensive, but the financial aid program is very generous and I think it is worth it. Also, attending gives you a huge advantage in networking and finding a career after graduation, especially in Sillicon Valley.
    What to do for fun

    Palo Alto is not exactly bustling with fun 24/7 like San Francisco (only 45 minutes away by CalTrain). However, the university makes up for this by constantly having something going on. Movie nights, the theatre, etc. there is also the parties and just relaxing and tanning or playing frisbee at The Oval to keep one occupied. There are also more education pursuits, such as guest speakers and the museum. This is the event website http://events.stanford.edu/today/. Also, the Stanford app has a feature that tells you much of what is going on on campus.
    Food and Dining

    The food I ate over the summer was as good as if not better than most college dining halls I have tried. There are a lot of dinign halls on campus so no matter where you live, food is close at hand. Also, some of the dining halls have late-night, which is served from 11pm to 2am I believe and can be payed for with Cardinal Dollars. These come with your meal plan and can also be used at other food places on campus such as The Axe and Palm, Subway, Panda Express, or the new Starbucks in Tresidder Union. You can also purchase additional Cardinal dollars.
    Dorm Life

    I lived in the dorms over the summer for Stanford's High School Summer College, and have talked to many current students about dorm life. As an incoming freshman I had desired to be in an all-frosh dorm, but was instead put in four-class Roble. Although I am still happy with my placement there are a few differences between the living situations. All-frosh dorms are very spirited and it is very useful to have so may people around you who are going through the exact same troubles. However, half of Roble is freshman, so with either one you will find someone to relate to. The level of social activity in each dorm varies from year-to-year. Other living options are ethnic theme houses, which are very tight-knit. Also, some housing is themed by academic programs- such as SLE. Frosoco is a freshman-sophomore house and has the reputation of being very good if you want a quiet sort of environment.
    Academic Rigor

    Stanford is an elite university academically speaking and the quarter system- while allowing you take a wider variety of courses- is also much more fast paced and you need to be prepared for that.
    Tips for prospective students

    Thousands upon thousands of students are turned away from The Farm every year, and the ridiculously low percentages you read about can be disheartening. However, it is important to remember that if you have a solid application then you have as good a shot as anyone else. Tons of students have perfect GPA's and test scores; but I think that having potential, and obvious depth of character is just as, if not more, important. I think that I conveyed myself honestly in my application and the admissions officers were able to see my passion and personality. Just be yourself, write essays that show traits about you that nothing else in your application can. They can see your grades, sports, and community service, give them something more- whether that be some significant adversity you overcame in one of those areas or a story from your childhood, anything that gives them a glimpse of who you are. They understand that there is no way to convey your entire being into an application, so get specific and show at least a part of it.

    Stanford has all the resources and esteem of an Ivy league school with California weather. The environment, while being extremely academic, is heavily influenced by the 35 D1 athletic teams and laid-back culture of the West Coast. Students both work hard and play hard; and I personally found the campus extremely welcoming and comfortable.

    What to do for fun

    The city of Palo Alto is right next to the campus, but there is usually so much to do on campus that there is no need to leave. There are athletic games, campus parties, cultural events, and more every week. You will never be bored!
    Food and Dining

    Compared to other colleges I have visited, Stanford's food is gourmet. Some dining halls are better than others, but the food is often so good, it can't be called cafeteria food. There are also many other places to eat on campus using the meal plan.
    Dorm Life

    There are very few bad dorms, and even if you end up in one of them, the people you live with are so awesome that it doesn't even matter how small your room is! The memories you share with the friends you make at Stanford will stay with you for a long time, and will be some of the best memories of your life.
    Academic Rigor

    Stanford is one of the nation's top universities, so the academics are top-notch. If your high school did not prepare you for such academic rigor (as was the case with me), there are many resources available to help you. But Stanford life isn't all about academics--the athletic teams are very good, and there are many other extra-curricular activities.
    Tips for prospective students

    Be yourself in your essay. Stanford is very diverse, so if you stand out from the rest of the cookie-cutter applications, you'll have a great chance of getting in!

    There are so many clubs on campus, there's no way you'll be able to do them all. That said, get involved with what you're passionate about and devote your time to those few activities. You'll gain a new circle of friends, and it's a good break from your studies.

    Stanford is expensive, but financial aid is pretty good here, much better than at many other schools. That said, don't let cost be a deterrent. The experiences you will have at Stanford are unparalleled, and Stanford affords you so many unique opportunities to be successful.

    Certain dining halls are better than others, but overall dining at Stanford is pretty good. When you get tired of dining halls, there's a wide variety of eateries on campus for you to get your fix.

    Band run is one particular event that occurs during New Student Orientation where all the new freshmen run with the Stanford Band to dance at various locations across campus.

    Stanford has leading professors in ALL departments. With a Stanford education, you become well connected to leaders in mathematics, physics, and engineering, to leaders in philosophy, comparative literature, and feminist studies.
    What to do for fun

    Football games, film screenings, performances (music, poetry, live bands, dance, etc.), speakers, basking in the field, dorm trips to San Francisco, the beach, skiing at Tahoe, parties, and laying out on fields enjoying the perfect weather.
    Food and Dining

    There are so many options. I'm vegetarian, and I was able to eat amazing dishes at the dining hall that is literally less than ten feet from the dorm. The same goes for all the dorms- they have dining halls close to, or actually connected to the dorms. If you don't like the food served at your dining hall, then there are a lot of other dining halls around campus that you can try, each with some different themes as part of their menus (chinese, south asian, or mexican). There are a lot of different meal plans as well. You can eat at the dining hall for every meal, or choose a meal plan that gives you less than 3 meals a day, but allows you to get food from Tresidder Union that has a Subway, Panda Express, Pizza place, and salad/wrap place.
    Dorm Life

    Stanford ResEd has done an amazing job at hiring staff. We have RAs like normal dorms, but their job is to go above and beyond by becoming our mentors, people we go to talk about life, and the tough choices we make in college. They're not there to discipline us. They're there to ease the transfer of going from high school to college. We also have dorm tutors- people living in our halls who are PAID to help us in our subjects (from computer science tutors to writing tutors, we have them). Lastly, we have wonderful resident fellows who act as the adult presence who live right next to the dorm. While they are not a constant presence that polices the dorm, they are present enough to make us feel like there is a dorm parent essentially. My resident fellows were so amazing that every Thursday they invited the entire dorm to baking night where people would bake, and people would stuff their faces with delicious desserts.
    Academic Rigor

    Classes are challenging at Stanford. For example, I've talked to a friend who took an introductory linear algebra course at Indiana University. This past year he took Stanford's introductory linear algebra course, and he found that, at Stanford, the content is harder, and the pace is quicker (Stanford has 10-week quarters). I've seen such academic rigor in all classes I've taken (e.g. imagine taking an introductory chemistry course taught by the author of the MCATs).
    Tips for prospective students

    Put careful thought into your application. You'll hear many people say that you shouldn't write what you think they'll like. They're correct. I can't stress enough that if you present yourself, and your passion(s) in an honest light, then your admissions officer will see the distinct, unique you.

    Stanford creates an environment that is conducive to learning; from freshmen dorms with their late night debates, to small class discussions, Stanford is never at a loss for intellectual stimulation and vitality. Every week there are events for all interests: sports, concerts, speakers (e.g. Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Moore, Tony Blair, Franz Kafka, Bill Gates, and many more), and Ultimate Frisbee in the oval! When Stanford says that it values diversity, it means diversity in every aspect from intellectual interests to identities.

    It's one of the safest places I've never been in. As a woman, it's nice to feel safe walking home at night, alone. Also, the men here are definitely respectful and do not force women to go through unwanted cat-calling, whistles, and other rather annoying/ borderline harassing behaviors

    I don't know much about Greek life at Stanford other than the fact that they exist and the people who participate in it keep it going at a healthy level.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are SOO many groups, it's often hard to choose from. I used to be in the Mexican folk dance group (Ballet Folklorico) And Mariachi Cardenal, but I ended up just staying with Mariachi because 2 groups plus pre-med and psych courses proved too much. I love seeing the various dance and music group performances that my friends are in, though.

    During the week of Big Game (the game against our arch nemesis Berkeley) we have a bear-ial, in which the band dresses in black and plays dirges while a procession of people follow them and a little teddy bear to the claw (our main fountain). When they get to the Claw, the band leader proceeds to kill the bear by impaling it upon the Claw's top, which is quite pointy, and we all celebrate our coming football victory against Cal (Berkeley).
    Bang for the buck

    Stanford is definitely worth all the effort, money, time, and energy. It is worth every penny, every smile, every tear, and every breath of beautiful California air. I love this school and all it has given me. I've grown up more the past three years than I can remember growing up in any other time in my life.
    What to do for fun

    There is Always something going on on campus. The CoHo (Coffee House) almost always has some kind of entertainment in the evenings. The Axe and Palm (a hang-out/study area/ fast-food source on campus) is also a great place to meet up with friends. On Wednesdays at the axe and palm they have free salsa classes with the salsa group on campus. You can join various dance, music, sports, or hobbies clubs. You can go to a salsa/bachata social or a regular party. The community centers will sometimes hold mixers or barbeques for all students to come to. Trust me, there's Always something to do. Just ask around. =)
    Food and Dining

    The food here is great and the dining staff are some of the sweetest, friendliest people you'll ever meet. Please take the time to get to know them. Know the hand that feeds you and every time you go to eat you'll have a greater appreciation for all the effort they put in, with good grace, just for you to be happy.
    Dorm Life

    The housing department does a fantastic job of matching you in your freshman year to a house that fits your needs best and they usually find you a good roommate as well. They might not become your best friend but they put you in an environment of great people with different strengths, weaknesses, cultures, and perspectives. That diversity is invaluable.
    Academic Rigor

    One of my good friends once said I remember when I was good in school. [look of nostalgia]. The classes are not impossible and most of the truly difficult ones are graded on curves or a similar accommodation but they are challenging. Overcoming those challenges, though, and passing classes with fairly decent grades are accomplishments in and of themselves. If you are used to straight As, do NOT expect to get them here with the same with which you did in high school. The classes are tougher and until you learn to accommodate your study habits to that new level of academic rigor, you'll have to settle for getting B's and C's and focusing on improvement and understanding instead of a specific letter grade to make you happy in your classes.
    Tips for prospective students

    You only will have to pull all-nighters if you are irresponsible with your time management. Do not be afraid to challenge yourself. Find your own way to learn and study to the best of your abilities instead of constantly comparing yourself to others. Make sure to thank the people who helped get you here once you do. You will meet people who will treat you like you are an amazing super-hero that got here all by yourself, but getting you here was a team effort and you should acknowledge that with grace and gratitude.

    It is the most productive, accepting, safe, and fun environment I have ever known. I gained a surrogate family in the community and all the students there. I feel incredibly fortunate to have met the people (students, faculty, and staff) I have met here and have had the opportunities I've had to mature and expand my understanding.

    Apply, whether or not you think you will be accepted, because very many of the students who go there are still unsure how they got in. Try your hardest throughout all of high school, and join everything that interests you. Do not be discouraged by having low test scores or GPA, because numbers are not everything!

    Stanford is mainly a pedestrian campus. If it is late at night a student can call the 5Sure service for door-to-door transportation if he or she ever feels unsafe.
    Greek Life

    Rush is in the Spring, giving freshman a chance to mingle before those hectic few weeks. Since less than 20% of students are Greek, it does not dominate the social scene at Stanford.

    Fountain Hopping - Most fountains are chlorinated for this reason Primal Scream - During Dead Week (the week before finals) scream your head off to relieve some stress at midnight sharp White Plaza/the Claw near the bookstore and the post office is a great place to hang out on a nice day.

    Every single day there is a speaker, an open house, a poetry workshop, a sports event, a concert, a play, or a meeting for an extracurricular activity, so students are never wanting of something to do. Palo Alto is a fun yet pricey city that is very accessible given the University's Marguerite free shuttle system.

    There are eight different dining halls on campus and some are better than others. Dollars that can be used at auxiliary dining hot spots like the Axe and Palm are built into the meal plan for undergraduates and may also be used at Late Night for a snack well after the dining halls are closed. Ricker is the first peanut-free dining hall in the nation.

    All-frosh dorms are the most social residences on campus. Most students get along very well with their dorm communities, but if not it is also relatively easy to branch out. Dorm funds are very much allocated based on students' interests.

    Some intersections can get dangerous because everybody bikes and a lot of people disregard the rules of the road, but other than that I always feel safe. However, it is easy to get your bike stolen so you have to be careful about that.

    Ehh...it's okay. I am not particularly very involved, but if you are looking for a lot of partying you can definitely find it with the greeks.

    There are almost too many student groups on campus. It is very difficult to choose something to do because there are just so many great opportunities.

    It hurts inside to see so much money going into my education, but if you really think about it, you are paying for so much more. You can develop meaningful and longlasting relationships with your peers who are most likely off to do great things, and you can also make connections with people who can help you get a great professional start like professors or other faculty members.

    Northern California (especially the San Francisco area) is a very lively place, so there is always something fun to do if you know who to ask or where to look. Not everybody gets off campus a lot because everything you really need to survive is there, but it is definitely worth it to take the train up to the city every once in a while and have some fun seeing a performance or a game.

    There is a lot of variety, but you can usually find something good to eat in a dining hall or in the university center.
    Dorm Life

    It definitely varies between all-freshmen dorms, four-class dorms, fraternity houses, and other houses, but I think overall the dorm life is great. There is always something to do because almost all of the undergraduate students live on campus all four years.
    Academic Rigor

    It varies depending on your major, but everyone on campus has worked hard to get here and has to work very hard to stay here. It is very difficult and sometimes disheartening, but it is easy to form study groups and develop relationships with professors and TAs who are happy to help you out.
    Tips for prospective students

    I recommend making a strong effort to get involved in meaningful activities during high school, but only activities that you are truly interested in. It is easy to see if somebody only participates in something to pad their resume as opposed to that person really having a passion for it. Also, get to know your teachers! They can and will write recommendation letters that can have a huge impact on your application, and they are usually also happy to give you recommendations on scholarships and other programs. Finally, look for summer opportunities like camps on university campuses or internships because those often provide a lot of meaningful experience.

    Stanford is one of the most expensive four-year universities in the country, but it is definitely worth it! The student body knows how to have fun but is incredibly academically driven, we have a relatively small undergraduate population but a huge campus that is overflowing with opportunities, and the faculty and staff are world class.     There seem to be a lot of incidents on campus. The Stanford Police department is really efficient in solving these problems, but it is really up to you to not just leave your doors or windows open and to walk in lighted areas if it is dark. If you do that, you should be perfectly fine.

    Tuition and housing are crazy expensive. I would highly recommend looking into scholarships to offset the cost otherwise if you don't already have the money to pay for it you will have huge loans. In my personal opinion, huge loans isn't enough to offset the prestige and name of the school.
    Food and Dining

    Lots of options on campus with convenient hours. As long as you are willing to walk or bike over, there is always something open and everything is fairly affordable.
    Dorm Life

    Everything is fine except for the fact that the rooms and apartments are crazy small. If you come from the South or the Midwest it will be difficult to adjust to the sizes.
    Academic Rigor

    Classes are time consuming and can be academically demanding. If you have a good TA that will help, but the best thing to do is to find a few other students in the class to review information with.

    Make sure you check the location of your dorm or apartment on the housing website, as well as the size. I highly recommend getting a car if you are planning to leave campus since the bus system isn't very good.

    A small and eclectic greek life that is not the center of all parties, but is definitely active. If you want to have a greek life experience, it is yours for the taking.

    In the first week of school, new student orientation exposes you to the club fair. This is a great time to explore the thousands of groups and activities open to all undergraduates. An excellent place to get involved in EVERYTHING. The only problem is truly knowing where to spend your time!

    With sporting events all the time, plenty of social people, and a great party scene on the weekends, Stanford students know how to have a good time. Only 30 minutes away from San Francisco and Santa Cruz, getting off campus is accessible and easy.

    Excellent food everywhere. Plenty of dining halls with healthy options, and with the newly opened Arillaga dining center, food at Stanford keeps on improving exponentially.

    From the first moment you walk into your freshman dorm, you will be enamored. It is one of my favorite memories of my first year, and undoubtably a huge part of the Stanford experience. The friends you make in your freshman dorms will be your friends for the rest of your time at Stanford, and possibly your life!

    Never had a problem, and I always feel safe walking around campus, even at night. Stanford participates in the blue light program (as does Harvard and many other universities) and runs a free program called 5-SURE that shuttles students around campus at night.
    Greek Life

    Not that active, especially compared to USC or Washington U. in St. Louis. However, I'm not in to Greek life, so that wasn't a big deal.

    So many opportunities to get involved in the community... We have world-famous choirs, a cappella groups, debate and rhetoric teams, and opportunities to volunteer in free clinics or other organizations. Students are constantly starting new clubs and groups, so there is rarely a dull moment on campus. Many also get involved with academic or medical research or join/start a start-up in the Bay Area.

    Stanford offers financial aid that is among the best in the US. Of all the schools who accepted me, Stanford offered the best financial aid package, even compared with public universities. Last year, due to an error in paperwork (my fault), I missed the financial aid application deadline by almost 3 months. Unable to shell out $51k for the academic year, I freaked out, but when I called the Financial Aid Office, they quickly processed my files and offered me the same package that I had the year before. I can't thank Stanford enough. Furthermore, it actually COSTS Stanford over $51k to have a student on campus for a year, so for ever student they accept, they are theoretically taking a financial loss. Alumni and other donations help subsidize the difference in a testament to how important this school is and has been to them.
    What to do for fun

    The campus is bustling and there's always something to do, whether it's to visit The Row to party, watch a student performance, or go out to Palo Alto / SF. Palo Alto admittedly isn't the most exciting city, but most students don't mind.

    World-class chefs, particularly on The Row and in particular dorms, like Suites. Some of the dorms aren't particularly good, but as a student who's tried out the food at several other colleges during summer college, I know that even bad Stanford food is way above the college standard! Plus, the Wilbur salad bar is pretty epic.
    Dorm Life

    Freshmen have the opportunity to rank their dorms by preference, and although I didn't get my first choice, I found an amazing community in West Lagunita. My RAs and PHEs really helped me figure out what I wanted out of my Stanford experience, and the friends I made at West Lag remain some of my best friends ever.
    Academic Rigor

    Classes are predictably difficult. I was the only student I knew in my sophomore-year biology class who hadn't taken Bio AP. Study hard.
    Tips for prospective students

    Join students groups and get involved with research early! There are a ridiculous number of opportunities here, including playing for a world-famous Mariachi band and doing stem cell research alongside Nobel prize winning scientists. Don't be intimidated by big-name professors or even other students -- you can't make it if you don't try.

An excellent university for the liberal arts, sciences, and business, the school allows students the flexibility to excel in almost any field that interests them and pioneers unique interdisciplinary research and work.     It's Stanford, are you kidding me. It's really safe, i doubt anyone would risk rapping someone if it means being expelled and banned from campus. You may need to worry about bike theft it the most used mode of transportation. Yes bring you 27 speed bike with you to college , it't better then a car bill every month/.

    Nerdy, Athletic, Smart and outgoing, first generation college students They strive really hard to be diverse, it's a good and bad thing. Meaning if they have a large percentage of African American, and African American applies and a Hispanic applies and they both have the same everything, the Hispanic gets admitted and the African American is the second choice. Not that they told me directly but, it obvious in many colleges who try to pride themselef on diversity
    Bang for the buck

    Financial aid is awesome, they practically pay college for you. About 95% receives financial aid, but they receive money from sponsor so you don't have to worry about them dipping into the red.
    What to do for fun

    If you go down campus drive there's a movie theater and off campus dining areas. San Francisco is a 45 minute drive away and a train ride away. San Jose isn't far, but not very college friendly in options.

    World Renowned chef! In certain dorms the food is amazing and others not so much but it beats other colleges by far. They have 3 dining plans 1. 19 meals a week 2. 14 meals a week w/ Stanford dollars 3. 10 meals a week w/ Stanford dollars they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday - Friday, on the weekend they serve brunch and dinner *Stanford dollars is the currency used in the school though they still accept regular currency a.k.a federal reserve bills They have cafes, (no accent mark), Starbucks, etc. most of them are open really late like 2 a.m. in the morning Overall great dining setting it beats most New York restaurants *the offer vegan and vegetarian meals and are tolerant in fact compliant with the diets of religious obligation

    I hear it's amazing, and for all my homosexuals out there, they're very accepting. The School is very free flowing when it comes to dorm they always seem to place their students in the right place even if it's their last choice. It's probably b/c they seem to place students of similar interest near each other creating lasting bounds throughout your 4 years there. IDK, they just always get it right according to the alumni and juniors i've talked to.
    Academic Rigor

    This school ranked #4 in the country, don't expect easy courses. The school gives you the opportunity to get really comfortable with all your professors with a 6.5:1 faculty to student ratio. This is amazing meaning the teachers will remember you name and your struggles not some student ID number on a piece of paper. Don't skip out on any opportunities to aid you in courses, this is a very competitive school. Everyone will be looking for help both inside and outside of class, maximize your time with you prof.
    Tips for prospective students

    Work hard. I got a flyer at my High School's respective college night and they accept less then 10% of applicants with a GPA BELLOW 3.7. Keep grades up all of junior and senior, and if you can create an optical illusion that you GPA is forever steadily climbing by doing a little bit better each year. Know your High School teacher amicably, this sounds hard for some but, this is important esp. when writing an excellent recommendation for college. Submit everything early, their selectivity goes up by 3% for early submitter. Lastly advertise yourself as if you an orphan trying to sell yourself to the parents of your dreams. YOU CAN DO THIS!

    This school, is absolutely astounding. The classes are hard, obviously 7% selectivity, so you shouldn't expect it to be a walk in the park. The school is beautiful, the people lovely, the community is super friendly, and lastly financial aid makes it affordable.

    Bang for the buck

    Rather expensive university to attend and unless you are related to very rich people you will need to look for scholarships. With only need-based scholarships giving out by the University, you will need to look else where, like Cappex, to help pay the bills. It is, however, worth it. With the great academics, spectacularly beautiful campus, an infinite amount of opportunity from hundreds of clubs and possible activities and the wonderful you are bound to meet on and off campus, there is no place better.
    Academic Rigor

    It is an Ivy League school on the west coast. Great academics, especially in their engineering programs. They professors are for the most part all above par and really make the courses very engaging for the students.
    Tips for prospective students

    Stanford is an extremely competitive university which means you need to work hard while you are in high school. But almost everybody who has been accepted to the university have perfect or almost perfect GPAs, SAT scores and ACT scores, so you have to bring something else different and special to play to your advantage. Work hard in high school but be sure to be engaged in interesting and different extra-curricular activities.

    Campus Safety

    There are police scattered around campus, usually looking for bikers who don't obey traffic laws, so if something happens you can probably find one nearby. The campus itself is always full of people hustling about. However, robberies and break-ins do occur every once in a while; take precautions like locking your windows and not wandering off in some isolated area in the middle of the night. Make sure you have a u-lock for your bike, and always secure it to something other than itself. I know someone who got his $700 bike stolen the first day he decided to lock the bike's wheel to the frame (without locking it to some other stationary object). The most danger you will probably get into is riding your bike around the circle of death - stay clear of the other bikers.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are so many clubs and activities, ranging from taiko to bhangra to more traditional activities like math, that you will be sure to find something that suits your interests.

    Well-rounded students who can get A's while having a good time and enjoying themselves.

    Full Moon on the Quad is an event that occurs some time early in the school year. People congregate at the quad, some naked, and dance, kiss, and sometimes make out under the moonlight. On another note, there is the tradition of roll-outs; every club that recruits you will celebrate your acceptance by banging on your door ridiculously loud some time in the early morning and creating a ruckus. Open the door quickly when this happens so as not to incur the wrath of your dormmates.

    Whether or not you do exceptionally well after getting in, you will (assuming that you graduate) end up with a highly-respected Stanford degree. You will emerge a more intellectual, well-rounded person with a greater awareness of the world, and most will go on to be leaders in their fields.
    What to do for fun

    Palo Alto is one heck of a boring town. There's one major street that's lined with shops for a few blocks - mostly dining joints like Yogurtland, the Cheesecake Factory, etc. and a movie theater or two. You'll be spending most of your time on campus.

    Every big dorm has its own dining hall. The food is on the better side, considering it is mass-produced. Meals are buffet system; you may grab as much food as you like and enter and exit as many times during one meal. This means you have unlimited fruit, soda, eggs, etc.; some people stockpile these in their rooms. If you get sick of dorm food, there are fast food joints on campus like Panda and Subway where you can spend real money or your meal plan dollars.
    Dorm Life

    If you want a dorm where there is something going on all the time, pick an all-frosh dorm. If you want a dorm where there is less socializing going on and is more quiet (perhaps for studying), pick a four-class dorm. There are pros and cons to both, though most students prefer the all-frosh dorms.
    Academic Rigor

    Stanford selects only the top students from every school, so if you're coming here be prepared to keep going at it. Contrary to popular belief, there's no slacking involved after getting in college. (However, that doesn't mean students don't have a good time when they're not studying.) Classes are typically curved to a B+ average. There are many resources to help with academics, such as office hours (which there will be for almost every class) and tutoring at the Hume Writing Center and other places.

    As for college admissions, Stanford is looking for students with high GPA's and a diversity of extracurricular activities, including leadership and community service. Grades certainly come first; but after that, it is critically important to be well-rounded and involved in your community.

    We have a police station located on campus and a strong alert system for any emergencies. The biggest problem students must worry about is bike theft. So overall, campus is extremely safe if you just invest in a good bike lock.

    Greek life at Stanford is unique. There are three housed sororities and many house fraternities. Greek life has a large social presence on campus.
    Clubs and Activities

    There is club for every activity. If there isn't one, you are encouraged to start one up. From Taiko, to belly dancing, to national championship winning rugby teams, to student government. The list goes on and on.

    The fun is limitless! Go watch an athletic match. Stanford has been given the Director's cup for athletic achievement all but one year since the award was started. Stanford is home to an overwhelmingly large number of Olympians, and some of the most talented athletes in the Nation and world. Get outside. The skies overlooking our palm tree studded campus are almost always bright blue. Go hike the dish. On a clear day you can see over San Francisco. Go fountain hopping through all of Stanford's beautiful fountains. This is one of my favorite activities. Go watch some sketch comedy. They are hilarious, and all of them are Stanford Students. Listen to acapella. The many talented acapella groups around campus are always performing, and a joy to listen too.
    Food and Dining

    Stanford has some great dining halls, but I am slightly biased because I have a food allergy. Overall, there is always fresh and healthy options. Or, late night snacks of the non-healthy but oh-so-comforting variety.
    Dorm Life

    Dorm life is amazing. I came to Stanford not knowing a single person. Now, I call Stanford my home. Students live on campus all 4 years. The community at this school is unbelievably strong.
    Academic Rigor

    Stanford is tough. Students are very intelligent. But, there is a sense of strong community and group studying is highly encouraged. I can't emphasize this next point enough. DON'T PROCRASTINATE!. We all fall victim to it, so try to limit it at least. Stanford covers an enormous amount of detailed material at a very fast pace so don't wait until the end to catch up. Take your midterms and finals very seriously. They will nail you on every detail.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get ready for some intense studying. Professors expect almost unrealistic expectations, but only do so to push students. I am thankful for this push as it has inspired me to work harder and go past any limit I thought may have existed. Get involved. You will be amazed at the number, and variety, or activities on campus. Each one is incredible. Take a risk and try something new. Go support your friends in their activities as well. Take a break every now and then. Stanford Duck Syndrome is an easy trap to fall into, so take those all important breaks. Most of all, go be your quirky, nerdy, fun-loving self. Reach for the stars. Chances are you will reach them if you try hard enough.

    There are activities happening all the time, you just have to read the flyers but it ranges from movies, visiting Alcatraz, going to San Francisco, ice skating, hiking, etc.

    Food choices are plenty on campus. I am very satisfied with the dining services, including their decision to buy organic fruits and veggies, and the numerous fun events they host year-round including Ramen Wars and Mardi Gras Night!
    Dorm Life

    Since most students live on the campus the dorms are very close-knit. Dorms are divided into East campus, which has more freshman, and West campus, which is closer to the Engineering quad.
    Academic Rigor

    While there is grade inflation, classes are definitely not an easy-A! Notoriously difficult courses include Math and CME, as well as upper-level Chemistry and Physics. Prepare to be challenged.

    We have a tradition called Fountain Hopping since there are a lot of beautiful water fountains all around campus. During the spring and summer, a lot of students change into their bathing suits and hop inside each fountain for a few minutes, then run to another one that is nearby and repeat the cycle until they have hopped into all of them.
    Food and Dining

    The food in the dining halls is amazing. The staff working in the dining halls are devoted to the students' satisfaction and are constantly looking for ways to improve their service. You can request food that you would like to eat and they will do their best to provide it for you the next time you show up at the dining hall. There is great service and it very easy to get used to the wonderful catering.
    Dorm Life

    Freshman dorms are very active since everyone is trying to get to know everyone else. Four-class dorms are a lot more calm here and the upperclassmen are very interested in getting to know the freshman. There is a lot of support for making new students feel at home. The resident assistants that live with the students are constantly planning activities that allow students to take breaks from academics and go play sports or board games. There is always something to do in the dorms when you are in need of a break.
    Academic Rigor

    All classes are extremely challenging here. None of the classes are designed to give you easy units and very little work. You learn to teach yourself what you don't receive from lecture and the most valued part is that you do it for the sake of learning, not for a grade. Professors value their material and want to prepare you as much as possible for your future job, even if it has nothing to do with the material you are learning.
    Tips for prospective students

    Keep all grades on check and study a lot for the SAT tests. Become involved in community activities, for that is very valued here at Stanford. Be yourself when writing the essays for the Common App because Stanford is interested in admitting students from very distinct backgrounds and experiences. There is no right or wrong answer for the questions they ask, so don't aim for what you think they would like to read.

    Campus Safety

    Police are all around, so you always feel safe. But one never feels pressure. Also, with reference to alcohol/drug policy, one will find it rather lax, but rightly so. Very few students go overboard because there is trust between the University and the students. It is always a safe environment for everyone. Sometimes I think it's a tad unrepresentative of the real world, but at the same time, I suppose the students should take advantage of it while they can.
    Greek Life

    Though small in comparison to public Universities, the Greek Life at Stanford is surprisingly much larger than one anticipates. Not only in number of men and women directly involved, but also in their involvement with the entire campus of students. Everything every fraternity puts on, whether it be Saturday night party or otherwise, is all-inclusive (read: not exclusive in the slightest).
    Clubs and Activities

    See about notes. From club sports to some student organization-sponsored event, there is literally free food and free fun every day on campus at Stanford. But actually -- every day.

    Any type. You wouldn't imagine the new types of people I run into EVERY DAY. Never think you aren't cut out for Stanford. Chances are, they want someone like you.

    You're paying 50k+ a year. It seems rough at first, but as you realize how much is offered and what the resulting professional potential of the education is, one gets over it quite quickly. Between the networks formed, the knowledge retained and the fun time while doing it all, it's all well worth it.
    What to do for fun

    Clubs (on clubs on clubs) provide typical day-to-day entertainment for the entire campus -- all-inclusive events. Otherwise, the year-round beautiful California weather provides all sorts of outdoor activities. And even then, dorms have regular free programming including -- but certainly not limited to -- trips to Blue Man Group, Alcatraz Island Midnight Tours, Concerts, New Movies. The list goes on. And for those who are looking for a party scene/Greek life: it exists, and man is it fun. There is a lot-a-bit of everything for everyone.

    Hit and miss. Some dining halls are the bomb all the time, while others are usually so-so and have their on days. In general however, dining is well above average. Did I mention all (9?) dining halls can be accessed within the dorm? One will (usually) never have to leave the dorm for food.

    With the large mix of kids at Stanford -- and I mean an incredibly diverse group -- one will always butt heads with noise complaints, bed times etc. But for the most part, everybody loves housing staff and policy. It's very difficult to find something wrong with your dorm here, though there are random quirky things here and there that are usually renovated quite regularly.
    Academic Rigor

    It's Stanford; what else would you expect? But let's be honest, it also stands out as having many low-enrollment seminars even for Freshman. You're treated as an adult (sometimes grad) student throughout every class.

    Go in expecting nothing but a phenomenal experience ahead of you. There is a 0% chance of being disappointed here.
