Great for these types of students

SCF is the place for those who cant afford a University, who want to be in a small town(which has a beach nearby), and want to work and go to school at the same time. you can be part time or full time or even just take one or two classes, what ever fits YOUR schedule. and the counselors are there to help you, so ask when you need help deciding a major or just what to do with school.

    Tips for prospective students

Dont ever be late to class. Be ready to learn. Be more than willing to make friends or class buddies in each class( it will come in hand when you do miss a class or two) and more important: love what your learning and become involved in all the activities that are offered at SCF.

    Bang for the buck

Definitely a bang for your buck. This school is inexpensive and you will learn just as much if not more than a major University. plus with all the scholarships out there it makes it even easier to attend. SCF also has their own scholarship foundation.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being a student at SCF. It goes at my pace with school work and activities. There are so many clubs that it actually was hard for me to decide, but I chose two and I love them and I am an active member in both. We have a cafe that has WiFi and yummy muffins and I always go there during my breaks between classes. All my teachers are nice and they understand that people work and have hectic busy lives and they are more than willing to help you out if you help yourself out first.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently a part time student and taking my basics. My teachers understand the busy lives of everyone and are willing to work with you as long as your willing to learn. I am learning events that happened in history that I already learned, but it is in more detail and I am learning more about them then I expected. State College of Florida is definitely a place to start where you can learn quite a bit, for a cheaper price than a university.

~Undecided majors. ~Nursing Students ~Those with lots of talent.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't feel too bad if MCC wasn't your top choice. There's always the chance you can transfer... and think of it this way, you can keep a job without having to worry about whether or not you'll have it after the summer, and you can live without paying for your own room and board if you're living with your parents.

If you want to talk about your grades to your professors SCF is perfect. The classes are not crowded and teachers have time for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Become best friends with your guidance counselor! Though the website has all the information you can get, questions of your future will always linger in your mind. Everyday i wake up knowing exactly what I'm working for because of the staff at SCF.

    Bang for the buck

If this is your local college, you do not pay for housing, meal plans, or super expensive out of state fees.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely LOVE having my own room so close to school! People are friendly, and the staff is always willing to help.

    Am learning a lot

College is college. Not everyone's dream is to go to the local college, but you will still get the degree you can get anywhere else here. Plus SCF makes it super simple to transfer.

    Campus Safety

Bad things hardly ever happened here, and the last few pages of your agendas will probably hold the statistics to prove it. There are even emergency phone/button poles in every part of the campus. As I've mentioned before, we became a smoke-free campus, which is one of the many reasons that we have clean surroundings. The ducks by the reflection pond will leave you alone if you leave them alone (or feed them). Beware of the bathrooms, though. Some people act like they're too young to remember to flush.

    Greek Life

We have a Phi Theta Kappa.

    What to do for fun

Women have a softball team and a volleyball team. Men have baseball team and a basketball team. Brain Bowlers, Math Olympians, and the Business Club are good choices for people who have fun with academics. The gym is open to all students at a certain time, and there were even martial arts lessons last semester. I was part of the Writers' Guild, which is just a baby but still keep the poetic spirit alive, along with the Elektraphrog and Pentangle literary journals. We also have an art club, SPACE club, Film Club, Pop Culture Club, Multicultural Exchange, Environmental and Earth Clubs, and many others.

    Food and Dining

SCF has a Smoothie King outside of its library and is very close to a McDonalds, two Taco Bells, two Subways, a Thai Restaurant, a Chinese restaurant, and quite a few others. This will hopefully make up for the expensive and lackluster cafeteria food. The cheapest meals I've had were a $1.20 pancake, $1.60 fries (or $2 if you add cheese) $2 pizzas, $0.96 scallop potatos, $0.75 sodas from a machine, and snacks from a machine.

    Dorm Life

SCF is a community college and a commuter campus so it does not have dorms. However, there are some nice apartments and houses in its immediate vicinity. The Manatee Cat buses will transport you if you live too far to walk but don't have a car. Lastly, there are bike racks everywhere and I've witnessed no penalties for bringing a skateboard as long as you don't do something obviously stupid with it.

    Academic Rigor

Degree programs are like pathways. The rigor mostly depends on which one you take. Nevertheless, I recommend using Rate Your Professors for opinions about teachers that run the classes you must take. Some teachers' classes are easy to pass because they don't care. Some classes are hard to pass BECAUSE the teacher doesn't care. In contrast, others' take their classes as seriously as if they were teaching at Yale, and are hard on students who catch on more slowly and ask a lot of questions- in those cases, you will need as much discipline and resourcefulness as you would in an online course (of which we had plenty).

    Tips for prospective students

-SCF has become a smoke-free campus for the sake of everyone's health. -Read the course catalogs thoroughly (and RateYourProfessor.com) so that you can save time and money for yourself and the faculty. -Pay close attention to deadlines and don't procrastinate!

    In three sentences

Attending State College of Florida was a wonderful opportunity for high school students such as myself because it allowed them to gain high school credits and college degree credits simultaneously. As a commuter campus with a part-time option, SCF is also a great option for adults in the area who seek an affordable route to a higher education. Since it is a community college, the best part is that it doesn't reject its applicants as long as they complete their admissions requirements before the deadline of their prospective term.

non-traditional and those who cannot afford to pay high tuition costs.

    Bang for the buck

It is difficult to complete a degree when classes are not available...

    Academic Rigor

Classes do not appear to be difficult and class size is relatively small.

    In three sentences

I have enjoyed the classes I have completed thus far. A major problem with the Venice campus is that the number of classes seems to be diminishing especially those that are under the fine arts umbrella and the best instructors have been transferred to the Bradenton campus. Not surprisingly, enrollment is down at the Venice location.

I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and Delta Psi Omega. There is not a large amount of Greek life though.

    Clubs and Activities

I was highly involved with the theatre program, and was able to even hold leadership positions. It was the best two years of my life.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

They have a club rush every semester, which was always a lot of fun, and hard to miss.

    Bang for the buck

It definitely is cheaper to go to SCF before transferring, especially if it is well planned. Tuition is way cheaper, and you still get a degree. Plus your credits should transfer completely if you are going to a school in Florida.

    What to do for fun

I am very involved with the theatre at the school which is what I always did for fun. I had the greatest time with it.

    Food and Dining

There is a nice cafeteria, and many vending machines throughout the school. The biggest problem with the cafeteria is that it holds irregular hours, and closes early on Friday, which is a pain because I am at school for the whole day.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms on campus, but there are cost efficient apartments nearby.

    Academic Rigor

It's not the most challenging school, but then again it is a junior college, and all of the classes are Freshmen and Sophomore level. I think it is certainly a good way to introduce yourself to the college life without being thrown full force into it.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to figure out what you want to do as soon as possible, if that includes transferring then find out what prerequisites you can take at SCF and get them out of the way as quickly as possible. That will save you time and money at your next university. If you don't plan though you may waste both.

    In three sentences

It is a wonderful worthwhile school. I enjoyed it, and I think I got a lot out of it. It's a cheap option compared to most four year universities.

I cannot imagine my college experience without being a student-athlete; playing on the tennis team helped me form friendships with other tennis players and kept me busier and healthier than I would have been otherwise. I know that I will continue to play on the tennis team throughout my time at State College of Florida. Another great thing I enjoyed to do for fun is indulge in sheer pleasure on Bradenton Beach which is very convenient to my school campus. An extra plus is the mall is literally right down the street along with St. Armands which is full of shopping and restaurants.

    Food and Dining

State College of Florida's dining services offer a variety of dining plans to fit your busy lifestyle. Meet your friends for breakfast and indulge in breakfast sandwiches and cereal. Are you in a hurry for a quick lunch? Stop by our deli station for your made-to-order wrap. Maybe youâ??d rather eat a comforting dinner with your roommates? Try out the home-style station for an ever changing variety of meals prepared from scratch. Whether you want to eat one meal a week or three meals a day there is a meal plan that suits your lifestyle.

    Dorm Life

Because it is a State college, there is no dorm life at SCF. However, there are apartment buildings for student athletes to live in across the street.

    Academic Rigor

You get out what you put in. The academics are great, the classrooms are small so students will be able to get one-on-one help from their teacher or have chances to get tutored by the instructor. The academics in this college offers a variety of courses, classes, subjects that are complex and challenging for students. And each individual class helps students to get where they need to be, to help them prepare for the workforce or in their career or to explore what life has to offer.

    Tips for prospective students

Now that I have completed my first year of college, I think that I am qualified to offer some advice to incoming students. I would tell them not to worry too much about making friends or trying to establish the same relationships that existed in high school, because very few people come to college with established friendships at the school already in place; everyone is looking to meet new friends. I think that new students should recognize that college is a new experience entirely and should welcome a chance to present themselves in a different way. It's very laid back, easy going, and the students come from all different backgrounds of life which has taught me a lot from my time there.

    In three sentences

State College of Florida is a great and friendly with lots of diversity and culture within its campus for all students of all ages. It also has many great helping opportunities for many students to get tutored or to get efficient help for their classes. At SCF Venice, campus security regularly checks the parking lot. There are also poles set up throughout the parking lot that have phones and a help button to push if there is an emergency or you need assistance. Greek Life

There are clubs such as Phi Theta Kappa (International Honor Society), Mu Alpha Theta (Math Club), Sigma Kappa Delta (English/Literature Club), and Phi Beta Lambda (Business Club). Some of the clubs have certain requirements on G.P.A. to be considered as a member.

    Clubs and Activities

SCF offers Greek clubs such as Phi Theta Kappa. SCF also offers clubs just for fun such as the Math Olympics Team and The Brain Bowl. There are clubs directly related to careers, for example: The Radiography Club. There are also special interest clubs such as The Gay-Straight Alliance and the Association of Motivated Individuals Striving to Assist the Disabled (A.M.I.S.T.A.D.) There are so many options! If you are interested in forming your own club, go to the Office of Student Life to begin!

    Bang for the buck

The SCF Wellness Program (mentioned above) is a great way to save some money on books, lab equipment, calculators, and pencils! You can earn a $300.00 voucher to the SCF store by participating in the program and racking up enough points just by having fun!

    What to do for fun

SCF has a multitude of clubs ranging from Student Government to Phi Theta Kappa. The school also has something called the Student Wellness Program. It's a great way to meet people and get into a healthy routine. You earn points for attending different sessions like yoga class. If you rack up enough points, you can earn a SCF-store voucher for $300.00! It's a great way to stay active, live a healthy lifestyle, and save money on books! SCF Venice is also within 15 minutes of a movie theater and 30 minutes of a shopping mall.

    Food and Dining

SCF Venice is located within 15 minutes of Chili's, Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse, Panera, McDonald's and many other restaurants. SCF has an onsite cafeteria. I haven't tried the cafeteria yet. Throughout all the campuses, there are also soda, candy and chip vending machines for quick snacking.

    Academic Rigor

At the end of the day, what you put into each course is what you get out. Each professor teaches and grades differently. Some professors grade homework while others don't even check to see if you completed it. Other professors base student's grades solely off their test scores, essays and the final exam. There isn't a fair way to judge the rigor of academics overall. The rigor of each course ultimately depends on what credit-level course you take. A 3000 level Accounting class will most likely be more demanding than a Career Explorations class.

    Tips for prospective students

Some students don't pay attention as much as they should in their first two years in college. Just because some of the basic required courses for an Associateâ??s degree might not seem relevant to you, you should try your best. Your G.P.A. is very important. Devote yourself to your schoolwork and you will see positive results! This will pay off more than you realize later on in life. If you need help studying, visit the Academic Resource Center (ARC). There you will find free tutors, student study groups, and access to computers.

    In three sentences

I would rate SCF a 8 on a 10 point-grade school with 10 being the highest rating. SCF offers it's students the option to take regular scheduled classes and late-start accelerated courses at one of three different campuses; you can also take certain online courses. Other schools may not care about their student's personal lives, but at SCF we are a team!

    What to do for fun

SCF also encourages students to participate in their Wellness Program which offers fun, exciting sessions of yoga, defense classes, STD information discussion and more in return for points which can be used to buy books at the SCF bookstore!

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria and the vending machines are the only places on campus where you can grab a bite to eat. Universities often offer restaurants all over campus, but students won't find many community colleges with fine dining.

    Academic Rigor

SCF professors do not overwhelm their students with busy work! Every essay, project, and presentation has a meaning and a goal as listed in the teacher's syllabus. The syllabus tells a student what to expect from the class and what is expected of the student! The rigor of the class matches up with the level of the class. A 3000 or 4000 level class will be more challenging than a 1000 or 2000 level.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are interested in pursuing a higher-level of education, then come to SCF's advising center and bring a list of goals! Planning ahead in life becomes really important once you get into college! You can make your basic 2 year associates degree well-worth it by making all your electives the prerequisites for a Bachelor's you are interested in. Even if you don't know what you want to do, the advisors at SCF will come up with a plan made just for you!

    In three sentences

At State College of Florida, students can earn a higher-level of education without paying high costs. I would rate SCF a 5-star school between the course availability, great staff, educated professors, friendly advisors and awesome clubs! SCF is a community college that cares about their students and that makes SCF a college that really stands out!

    Bang for the buck

The State College of Florida is an extremely affordable option. It is about 100 dollars a credit hour for a Florida resident. That is a fraction of what you would pay at another school for the same class.

    What to do for fun

For fun I would suggest join one of the many clubs the college offers. You will meet people with the same interests and do activities you enjoy. It's one the best ways to make friends.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is full of fine but over priced food. It is deffintely a step up from the slop you would buy at high school, but not worth the money. You can get good quality food for less in one of the small restraunts only ten mintues away from the main campus.

    Dorm Life

While the State College of Florida is no longer just a community college, it does not yet offer dorms. So I'm afraid that since they are non-existent they will have to get a one star rating.

    Academic Rigor

The academics range from easy to challenging, and you can easily choose what is best for you. The school offers many classes that help you build your skills and knowledge so that you feel confident and comfortable taking harder classes. If you feel ready and have the scores to prove it, you can simply jump to the hard academics right away. Just because this is a small school does not mean you should assume you'll simply breeze through everything. Professors know their topics and will challenge you to be your best, no matter what level you are.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to your classes, do the work, and have some fun. That's all there is to it.

    In three sentences

The State College of Florida is a small school with a relaxed environment. It is a good stepping stone when you are fresh out of high school and don't feel ready to leave the nest. It is also a wonderfully affordable option!

    Campus Safety

Never heard of any incidents at my year at the school, and campus security constantly patrols the school. State College of Florida is a tobacco free campus, and it is enforced well. Flat tires, dead batteries, and on campus traffic incidents are handled by campus security.

    Bang for the buck

State College of Florida is a great opportunity to gain an education without breaking the bank. They offer a collegiate program that allows high school juniors and seniors to take a full college load and graduate with an A.A. degree with books and tuition paid for.

    What to do for fun

Multiple sports teams and other organizations to join at the school. Bradenton beach and other beaches are within 10-15 miles of the school.

    Food and Dining

On campus food is decent, most meals are $4-5. There is also a Smoothie King and farmers market located on campus. Subway, McDonald's, Panera, Starbucks, all major chains are close to the school.

    Dorm Life

No on campus residence, but there are homes and apartments close to the school if you plan on renting.

    Academic Rigor

The class difficulty depends on what classes you take, but General Requirements classes are easy. Macroeconomics is difficult, along with Calc I+II+III, Chem I+II and higher math and sciences.

    Tips for prospective students

As for all schools, stay focused and don't put off projects until the day before. If you need help with anything, head over to the Academic Resource Center or the library. The school is in a great location in Bradenton with easy access to food and shopping off campus.

    In three sentences

Teachers are involved in your education and work to help students succeed. Many online classes offered and great affordability. Lots of academic assistance available, and great programs in upper level classes.

Great for these types of students

Students who don't like a big campus, inexpensive, closer to home and family

    What to do for fun

Join clubs, make friends, volunteer at the collegiate school.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend making friends with at least one person in each of your classes and get their number just in case you can't attend class. Its best to speak to your academic advisor/counselor every semester so you take the classes you need to graduate. If you plan to change your major do so quickly or else you might be taking classes for a major you're not even interested in and waste time. Make the most out of the experience, join clubs and make friends so you're not too stressed. It is important to communicate with your teachers so you know what you need to do to pass and get and A. It is also important to communicate in class, you will learn better, remember the material and be more interested. If you never participate it is like you were never there.

    In three sentences

There are study rooms available for students who prefer a quiet environment and multiple places to study on campus. The counselors are always ready and happy to help you each semester to keep track of your progress. It is inexpensive and the perfect place to get started if you're considering transferring after two years or even staying there for four years.
