Great for these types of students

SFA is for students who wants to be social or just sit in their dorm room playing video games. It's for students who care deeply about their grades because there is a whole system and a few dorms here that was created for your academic enrichment needs, AARC. It's for the people who's tired of the big city but not ready to go country yet, or vise versa. It's also a place where you can figure out where do you wanna be in five years. The atmosphere, the people, the beautiful trees and flowers, and campus draws in something for every kind of person. They have music concerts and plays if you're into fine arts or scavenger hunts and karaoke contests if you're looking for fun after studying one night. If you're looking for Greek life, there's plenty of that. The religious community is also active for there are Christian sororities and organizations on campus. You ever know what you'll find yourself into.

    Tips for prospective students

Going away to college was a dream come true. Being away from the parents and from the life you knew oh so well before now was so amazing. The true meaning of freedom, exploration, and experimenting was all up to you. Before you decide on this school, visit the campus first. After touring the school, taking in the beautiful landscape, trying the cafeteria, and attending some social event, you'll know then if the school is calling you.

    Bang for the buck

You pay for everything that is offered. We have delicious retail restaurants like Chick-Fil-A, Panda Express, and Pizza Hut right on campus, Internet access anywhere on campus, including wireless. Housing is affordable and chic. You should see the apartment/hotel style dorm rooms like Village and the Lodge. Sports Bar, Huge TVs, oh and don't forget our very own movie theater. And don't forget, year around free passes to all sports games.

    Am enjoying being here

The student life at SFA is amazing. There's always something going on and something for everyone. There's clubs you never knew existed and even the opportunity to create your own. There's a wide range of athletic events, especially this year when I heard there's going to be a bowling team. There's tremendous community support, job opportunities, and just a cool small college town to be in there.

    Am learning a lot

Being at this school has been a great opportunity. The teachers are always available to talk about a test, your grades, or just about the subject in general. Since I've been at SFA, I've visited all my professors and they have all helped me to improve my performance in class by giving me tips and helping me understand the material. I give an A+ to the teaching staff who works hard to cater to your learning needs.

Great for these types of students

Students who want small sized classes in order to have a lower student-to-teacher ratio, teachers who offer office hours where the students are able to go by and ask questions, students who want easy accessible classes, students who want to be able to get involved in multiple activities and organizations, students who want to attend a university but not pay the high prices.

    Tips for prospective students

USE THE AARC! The AARC, in my opinion, is the best thing located on campus! Its free and you have help with classes. Also, go to SI study groups, they help a lot as well! Student Instructor are student who have taken the class and passed with an A. They talk to the professor and give study guides to the student and help you complete them. They answer any question that you might have during study groups or possibly in class. Also, take advantage of as many services as you can because they are all free! The Recreation Center offers weight machines, a running track, in door and out door volleyball and basketball, a rock-climbing wall, cycling rooms, aerobic classes, walliball, racketball, and an outdoor heated swimming pool which is all free! The HPE center is another gym that offers a lot of recreational activities.

    Bang for the buck

SFA can be either cheap or expensive, depending on how you look at it. Compared to other major universities I highly recommend considering Stephen F. Austin. The total cost for tuition, housing, meal plan, books, etc. cost me about 8,000 for the semester. I had to apply for loans and pay out of pocket in order to attend. Although you get the experience of a university, if it is your first year as a student then i recommend doing your basics at a community college because the average saving are $6,000 per semester.

    Did enjoy being here

SFA offers many services and clubs in order to get everyone involved. From the Baker Patillo Student Center, to the HPE complex, to the newly built Recreation Center, their is something for everyone. Most events are free and easy accessible. The Student Activities Association has a movie theatre that offers newly released movies every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night; the cost is only a dollar and all drinks and popcorn are $.75 with free refills! School spirit is high at this school. The football games are live and exciting as well as the basketbal games. Also, off campus there are a few night clubs. The only one I went to was the Anex which was directly across the street from the campus. Overall, SFA was an enjoyable experience; but everyone gets homesick.

    Did learn a lot

At Stephen F. Austin State University the education that is offered is superb. The question is are you able to go the extra mile in order to give yourself the highest degree of education. The professors do their job in order to supply you with appropriate information in order to be successful. But if the homework is not done, or the appropriate study skills are not utilized then your pretty much out of luck unless your a genius. The school offers many services in order to help you out. For example the AARC (Academic Assistance and Resource Center) offers peer to peer tutoring, specified subject walk-in tables, and Sudent Instructor peer groups for specific classes. These services are free and on campus for easy access. The learning ability at this school is magnificent and every student should take advantage of the fact that the classes are small and the professors desire to help every student.

As stated before, if you want a wild life, this isn't for you. There are parties, yes, but there are no resources for wild stuff, this school is designed to be quiet and help you be quiet but successful student. If you're like me, and you like the idea of going to school to learn and you're okay with having to study, but like bouts of fun, too, then go here. My ideal night is a few hours of fun (whether that's at the pool, at the party, or at the Starbucks) and a bit of quiet time to relax or study, and this school is perfect for that. Take into account that it isn't only the school that's quiet, it's the town of Nacogdoches, which is a pretty conservative town. So behave! And good luck!

    Tips for prospective students

I know you've probably already heard this, in reference to your junior year or future college career, but you've probably heard it only from your parents or counselors, who went to college 20 years ago. But honestly, and really, do not let the work build up. Every time someone said that to me, I figured they were just talking about the college student who goes to school to party. I'm not that student, I'm the student who goes to learn, and I thought I would know better than these people telling me to study every day. I'm a hardworking student, but the kind that figures out what works best for her after spending some time in every new situation. I encourage that, but really, and as much as you've heard this before: When you're up at 3am studying and you have a final in five hours, you're gonna know that there was something else you could have done instead going to Marble Slab or that party or whatever. Even if you don't want to take this to heart, at least promise yourself, that if you're not going to be the person who studies all day, do at least one-to-two hours more than you normally. Not all day, and not even consecutively, but that little extra ounce of work goes a long way. Also, if you don't like your professor, this time, there's nothing you can do about it. You can drop the class, but if you don't , you're stuck with him/her and if you feel they're not treating you right, you can't go to the counselor to complain and make sure you don't fail. Hardly no one is running an interference with these professors, and you better be good from day one, because if you think you're the professor is the kind who will reflect their personal opinion of you in their grade, they probably will and no one will stop them. Not to say that they are all scary like the movies and TV shows portray. Before I went to SFA, I was expecting all professors to make it clear from day one that you are nothing to them but an inconvenience and that they expect you to stay in line, or they will fail you and kill you, so to speak. That's not true. A lot of them rule with a tight fist, yes, but no one is a professor if they don't want to help. Remember that you have to go through a lot of school to be a professor, so you're more likely to run in to bitter high-school teachers that want to make your life miserable. No professor doesn't want you to do well, so treat them with respect, and they will to. But yeah, you'll get that occasional pain-in-the-butt teacher, and yes, you do have to play nice.

    Bang for the buck

Considering that I pay around 14k at SFA for tuition, which includes a meal plan (which keeps me well-covered) and for the cheapest dorm possible, I'd say I get bang for my buck. Though I will not stay in my particular dorm any longer once possible, again, it's not as if I was miserable. It was definitely liveable, but I've been to the other dorms and they're just plain nicer. Considering that the gym and library AND tutoring is considered in tuition, it's a pretty sweet deal. The AARC (tutoring center) is open Sun-Fri until about 1am, and you can be a walk-in, or, if you sign up early enough, you can get a private tutor. And it's all free, like the gym, as previously stated. The meal plans all cost the same, but you can get different variations. There's one, the 7/14plan, that gives you two meals a day along with $125 Dining Dollars a semester, which is basically a debit card for places like the on-campus Starbucks, Chick-Fa-Le or etc. I've never gone to the cafeteria more than two times a day, so I recommend this one, especially since they have an awesome place, the Einstein Bagel Bros. in the library where I love to waste my dining dollars before class. If you're a cafeteria person, you can get the 7/20 plan that gives you three meals a day at the cafeteria and $50 dining dollars for one semester.

    Am enjoying being here

If you want a huge school with lots of actions, you may want to look elsewhere. There are certainly parties and plenty of sororities, fraternities, and other organizations, but it's a very quiet, low-key school. I'm not a huge party-animal, and by that I mean for entertainment, I go to Marble Slab and the movies. Occasionally, I DO go to a bar or club or something active. But to be honest, if you're a serious student, you don't need an active party life. While the work load wasn't a killer, I was definitely spending at least half of my free time doing homework, if not more. The good thing about SFA and the small town of Nacogdoches is, if you need a few free hours and then to get back home soon to do school work, you don't have to go far. There are several forms of entertainment on campus. One being the student center, which has a pool table, Starbucks, and lots of eating options. Although most of these close early (with the exception of the pool table lounge), there is still a little store and lots of sitting areas if you need a new place to study and sip on a coke. The best thing to do on campus for fun is the gym. I know, I know, so many of us roll our eyes when we hear this, but you if you don't want to work out, the gym is still a place for you. Have you seen the pool? It's a pretty large space and, get ready for this, has a lazy river. It doesn't look like a hole in the concrete, either. It looks like a lagoon and is purely beautiful at night. Only an hour there and I feel greatly relaxed. If you DO want to work out, the gym is H-U-G-E. Machines, machines, machines, AND they have cable TVs on them, so you can watch and work out. Did I mention the rock climbing wall? As for the dorms, they aren't great, honestly. The most expensive ones, about $4800, have a kitchen, with a microwave and full-sized fridge, private bathroom with two sinks, living room with a couch, and two private bedrooms. They rock. But the cheapest, Hall 14&16, where I'm at, sadly enough, ha ha, is $1400 and I absolutely will be relocating ASAP. Not that I had huge troubles this past semester. The rooms are just big enough for a pack rat like me to live in, but the community bathrooms are only cleaned once a day, and if something happens after they clean in the morning, you have to look at it all day. Yeah, gross. Not to mention the halls look like an asylum, and there's not a pool table or ping pong table like every other dorm has. But there are meetings in the hall designed for study tips and other activities to help benefit you at school. My trips back and forth from buildings isn't bad, either. I can get anywhere in about five to ten minutes, and even if it is hot or cold or miserable, it's a beautiful walk. SFA spends more on landscaping (2 million a year) than any other Texan school. Everywhere you walk, there's flowers and beautiful, full green trees sheltering you and looking out at in the fall at the orange trees covering the huge hills is nothing short of breathtaking. Not to mention, I've no had no one act like they didn't want to help me. I'm the only person in my family to go to a university and I've been really overwhelmed by all that I have to do keep my funds coming in and such, and I've had ask some really basic questions that I should have known before, and no one has ever made me feel unwelcomed or like they didn't want to help. Considering that it's a pretty large student ratio, it's kind of amazing how helpful and patient everyone is.

    Am learning a lot

Four out of five of my classes, and I'm ignoring my math class because it's not my strong point, had teachers that were not afraid to engage with you and make sure you know what you needed and wanted to know. When I feel like a teacher wants me to learn because they really want you to, not just because it makes their paychecks better, it makes me WANT to learn and I can safely say, that those four teachers this semester were really awesome and treated me with great respect. I didn't feel like a kid, I felt like a student. When you're in high school, you feel like you're being babysat, don't you? Well in my first semester at SFA, I felt like I was for once learning something relevant and I felt encouraged to do my best. Earlier I said that four out of my five of my teachers this semester helped me achieve great heights, and that's because I'm not going to lie to you about that fifth teacher. I'm very bad in math, so bad I had to take remedial and I almost failed. That being said, large part of it was due to my teacher hardly being an English-speaker. He was foreign and had terrible English, and I think if you have a group of students that need a lot of help in a certain subject, you don't give them the worst teacher in the school. SFA has a notoriously horrible math department and this proved the case. Don't be too discouraged, though (unless you're going in to math, of course), because the teaching, nursing and forestry programs are pretty kick-ass, they're the reason the school is there.

Great for these types of students

Basically every type, race, religion, anything you can possibly imagince of someone is welcome to Stephen F. Austin State University. This school is friendly and has a very outstanding educational program for all majors. I heard that SFA has good programs for forestry, teaching, and nursing though. We have the number one ranked cheerleaders and other athletes. But I'm pretty sure everyone gets the best education at SFA and good times, and everyone is welcomed!

    Tips for prospective students

It's going to be overwhelming at first, but everyone will get adjusted, make new friends, learn so much in a lifetime, and become a SFA Lumberjack! The best tip is to be optimistic to a new environment and the best will come to you. SFA is very home welcoming like I said earlier!

    Bang for the buck

SFA has great dorms that are livable, it's not what everyone imagines it to be disgraceful. Other dorms are more nicer than others, but once your settled in your dorm, it feels like home. The eating on campus is pretty good. You won't get tired of cafeteria food because there are other options like Chick f lae, Panda Express, Pizza Hut, and Einstein Bros. If your options are not any categorized, grocery stores are across the campus and many other fast food restaurants you can pick from. Everything's pretty convenient and affordable. SFA creates many great ways to afford your living, food, tuition, and other things. I thought college was expensive, but once you get settled, it was not as stressing as anyone thinks.

    Did enjoy being here

Nacogdoches is a perfect little city for a college like SFA! The city has all kinds of restaurants, fast food places, convenient shopping areas, great social places, and a pretty good shopping for shoes and clothes. It's the city in the middle of no where in Texas, called Naca no where, but it is a city full of nice great folks, beautiful nature, friendly atmosphere, and there is always somethings to do. I loved being in Nacogdoches!!! I admit that I was over whelmed and felt home sick when I was there, wanting to go home sometimes, but coming home to your home town makes you really miss SFA.

    Did learn a lot

Stephen F. Austin State University is one of the universities you will feel connected with your professors and fellow classmates. The classes are pretty averaged sized so therefore you can ask as many questions and have a lot more attention from your professors. I learned a lot in all my classes because everything is easy as high school, and not only did I learn a lot of educational aspects, just the whole general atmosphere at SFA is very home welcoming, which helps out a lot in the long run.

Great for these types of students

SFA is a school for students who want to get away from home but not too far. It is for students who like a little country added to his/her big city life. You can have plenty of fun, meet new people and just be yourself.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focus on what you are at college for. It is okay to have fun, but remember that you need to study and prioritize your assignments and personal activities. The campus has many trees and the landscape is very nice.

    Bang for the buck

The dorms are pretty nice and affordable. There a many restaurants like Cain's, Chick-Fil-A, McDonalds, Chili's etc. Also, there are restaurants in the Student Center. You also get advantage to all sports games free of cost.

    Am enjoying being here

The gym is a state of the art facility. I enjoy going there and working out and playing basketball, volleyball, etc. There is always something to do or you can always find something to do. I like the small town atmosphere.

    Am learning a lot

I learned a lot during my first year at Stephen F. Austin University. I learned that the professors are always there for you to talk with about your class performance and will give you extra work and help to increase your learning skills.

If you want to come to a party school, this will probably suit you, but SFA also offers a good education. If you love athletics, this is the place for you (everything is always Axe 'Em Jacks). If you're looking for a community with strong religious beliefs, Nacogdoches could be called home.

    Tips for prospective students

    * Get along with your roommate! * Meet new people! * Get involved with something! * Stay away from all the parties with alcohol! * Do your homework!

    Bang for the buck

The cost for tuition is relatively affordable. But, it's the room and board that's going to hurt you. Students with less than 60 hours are required to live on campus and purchase a meal plan and in my opinion, having a required meal plan is just insane.

    Am enjoying being here

For the most part, I'm enjoying SFA. I've hit some rough spots here and there, but I will encounter difficulties everywhere!

    Am learning a lot

The classes are great, not too tough, but not too easy! The professors are awesome and really want you to succeed!

Great for these types of students

If you are dedicated, care about your grades, and are willing to put in the effort to make the grade, this is where you belong. SFA is a very proud campus where everyone is always helping everyone work towards their goals, but you as the student need to put in the time to get the final result. Also, if you are persuing nursing, teaching, music, art, forestry, law, pre-health careers like dental, doctor, therapist, etc, SFA is right for you. SFA has strong foundations in these careers and it offers great programs to get you where you want to be. Like any university, SFA is about discovering and learning about yourself. You might start wanting to be a doctor and end up graduating with a bachelor in art. So don't beat yourself about not knowing what you want to be or where you are headed, there are plenty of ways to find your niche at SFA and know what is best for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class and actually study. If you go to class you will get the material needed for the tests, and if you study there is no need for cheating. Surprisingly there is quite a bit of cheating in classes that you would not expect to find it, but unlike high school, the consequences and the punishment for cheating are greater and more severe. So as a responsible student just simply study. Study and review little by little everyday so when tests come, things won't feel so overwhelming and feel like it's the end of the world. Also be aware that there are cruel people in this world, and it is best not to trust anyone too quickly. A close friend of mine feel in the wrong hands of someone for blindingly trusting in them and got raped, so please, be responsible. Don't go out with anyone you meet. Get to know people first to avoid terrible things from happening to you.

    Bang for the buck

If you work for the grades, you can easily get scholarships and find ways to pay for your education. It is just a matter of effort to achieve what you want in life. SFA is cheap to begin with, but it can get somewhat expensive depending on what you are pursuing. And if you need help and need a plan on how to pay for your education, never hesitate to go to the financial office and ask for it. They will always be more than happy to sit down with you and help you plan for ways to pay.

    Am enjoying being here

Although SFA is not great in size, it has a great variety of people to hang out with. Once you join clubs, as a student, you will meet so many different people with different backgrounds and you'll honestly love it. People are outgoing, adventurous, loving, and caring. From day one, I never felt alone because there has always been someone there by my side ready to lend me a hand. SFA is not just a university, it's more like a huge family where the students and professors care about everyone.

    Am learning a lot

I actually didn't expect to find teachers to be so caring about their students. Teachers go out of their time to give their students all the tools to make good grades, not just good, but excellent. They of course expect alot from their students because they offer you all the resources that you need as a student to succeed. My professors would sit down with me in their office and explain my possibilities of making a B, or A and tell me ways I could prepare more to ensure I got what I wanted. They were patient and truly wonderful. I never felt left alone or uncomfortable. We even planned times where I would come in and review with them material that I didn't fully comprehend in class. And when ever they weren't available, the library was always open with plenty of people there at the study sessions that I could go to and ask for help. There is no reason not to succeed at SFA with the great people there, it's just impossible.

This is a really good school especially if you're going to be an education major.

    Bang for the buck

This is a great school. You get your moneys worth with everything from the classes to the meal plan.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here! For me its not to far but just far enough away from home. It's lots of fun here and everyone is nice.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a lot more than i did in high school that is for sure. I am learning something new in each of my classes, and i am becoming a better student because of everything.

Great for these types of students

I think SFASU would be good for students coming from smaller towns or who want the small town feel.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to the movies early, if you are going to the cafeteria around noon send a friend to get seats early {it can get crowded if you don't come in early}.

    Bang for the buck

There are several dining services on campus, a movie theatre, a recreational center with a pool and much, much more.

    Am enjoying being here

Everyone is very helpful in helping me if needed, from the Info desk in the Student Center to the Financial Aid office about scholarships.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned a lot in my first semester on campus and not just about the subjects I'm taking, I'm learning about different cultures and types of people, and places.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure that you are not coming to SFA to party because it will burn in the long run. Go to as many review sessions and AARC tutorial as possible or even get together with a group of friends. Make sure you stay on your P's and Q's because you never know if you have your mind set on an activity such frats or sorority.

    Am enjoying being here

I love my University. Although it may be in a rural setting, it can be fun. I love it because we have a diversity of people and you meet many different people. I enjoy the activities that I am able to make throughout the school year.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned that being able to maintain a good GPA and a social life is astonishing. The professor's are very helpful if you have any questions or concerns. I go to tutoring to get updated on some of the notes or prepare for the next class day.

Students who are looking for a beautiful, quiet place to educate themselves and who don't mind getting away from their families for some time. SFA is in the beautiful Piney Woods of East Texas, and will be great for students who like to escape the pressures of everyday city life.

    Tips for prospective students

Of course, apply on time, if not early. Go to orientation early, and look into Jack Camp (I didn't go because of prior obligations, but I heard it was amazing). This school is in a small town in East Texas, so remember, there isn't much to do off campus, but there is a lot to do on campus; and if you like big cities, don't come here (the nearest big city is 2 hours away).

    Bang for the buck

SFA is a good institution in the solitude of East Texas. Now, it is not top-tier like Harvard, but overall you will still learn much from the school, and will be given the same opportunities you will gain from other institutions. At a price of about 6,000 to 8,000 a semester (including dorms, fees, books, etc.) SFA gives you a pretty good bang for your buck.

    Am enjoying being here

There is so much to do on campus, so I found that a car was very unnecessary. The activities for students are always cheap (if not free) and are loads of fun.

    Am learning a lot

I have been really learning a lot during my first semester here at SFA. All of my professors are VERY intelligent and know how to pass information to students. They all can connect in one way or another and will allow you many chances to succeed.

Spirited (Spirit Fridays!). Involved (it's a small town, have to find something to entertain yourselves by). Dedicated (Some of the social organizations require involvement, and passion). Nature-lovers. It is by far the most beautiful campus I have ever set eyes upon (lover of pine cones, pine trees, etc). YOU! No matter what kind of student you are, you're certain to find something you love.

    Tips for prospective students

It's a very spirited school, Spirit Fridays every Friday, so bring purple! Although SFA will hand out several free shirts. Come with an idea for your Major (you don't want to end up switching too late, like I almost did). Get involved ASAP, you'll meet friends, and feel more a part of this wonderful community. Find a niche to run around with- it's not hard, especially if you're involved in at least something, but once you do, it's the best feeling in the world. Oh, and don't touch the squirrels! They eat blue M&M's, and skulls of creatures... they're scary. Axe 'Em Jacks!!!

    Bang for the buck

It's not a bad tuition rate. Sure it's a bit costly, but relatively speaking, for a good university, it's a decent price. The food could be a bit better for the price we pay, but the chocolate chip cookies they concoct make up for it. Plus, they offer a nice share of scholarships. :)

    Am enjoying being here

I ABSOLUTELY Love it!!! I was petrified, like most, at attending college, but SFASU is just impeccable. I've found my niche of friends, I'm highly involved (which is what I love), my courses are going well, and I've finally settled on a good major, which I cannot wait to work more towards. Axe 'Em Jacks!!!

    Academic Rigor

I am not the sort of student who takes in information well, but here, so far at least, my teachers have been knowledgeable, and have effective instructing habits. Some of my best teachers work here. I have no complaints.

Police are always on campus. If there is a problem on campus the police are always there.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is every where. Many of the students are in Greek life because of the various activities there. At SFA we have the Pan-Hellenic Greek life and also the Divine Nine

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of activities on campus including student government, and they vary from personal to fun. For sports like basketball games, your student i.d gets you in for free.

Great for these types of students

If you are Religious than you should check out the BSM, there are various activities that they do there. If you like to play sports, check out the intramural sports teams.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Always go to Spring Fest,Battle of the Piney Woods. And the Yard party's mostly because there are free food.

    Bang for the buck

Your dining dollars help you a little more if your hungry, but to get a fast and free meal you can go to the BSM every wednesday for free. The Gym is always free and if you like Zumba or any dance classes they are there for you.

    What to do for fun

join groups at the school, and see about sorority and fraternity life.

    Food and Dining

The food here is great especially if you have a high metabolism. Its more buffet style. But if you are not up for the dining halls, there are also the various fast food places on the campus and around the campus.

    Dorm Life

There are some old dorms and some much newer ones. When selecting which dorm to live in make sure that you look at what is to offer. There are newer dorms like lumberjack landing(freshman) and lumberjack village.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you know all the deadline dates. Always check with financial aid more than once and know your financial aid counselor.

    In three sentences

Its a great school. There are awesome ways to pass. But it is very boring, especially since its in a small town.

Great for these types of students

This college is perfect for those individuals that want to go to college but have a few struggles. I have low test scores and they are allowing me into their college by entering into their Pathway to SFA program. They did not give up on me so this proves they are very helpful and caring.

    Tips for prospective students

I believe that anyone that wants to go to college should try to apply here and see what I get to see in the fall. i see plenty of people that care how the individuals turn out. You feel like a special individual not just a number.

    Bang for the buck

i belive i will be getting all of my bang for the buck, because they have so many programs to help an individual succeed and make sure they try everything possible to achieve their goals here.

    Will enjoy being here

I will enjoy being able to go to this university, because it is so beautiful. The atmosphere is so relaxing. it will be a big change from the atmosphere of living in or surrounded by a big city.

    Will learn a lot

I will expect to learn as much as possible from this university, because it has so many ways of helping you stay on top of your game. They give you chances to prove your worthiness before just sending you packing off to another college. They treat you as an individual not just another prospective.

Great for these types of students

SFA is great for so many types of students. I would say that being a part of Greek life here is huge even though I am not involved in it. Whether that interests you or not there's a niche for every type of student for sure!

    Tips for prospective students

Send your application and transcripts and stay on them about your admission status. I visited the university in person a few times to iron some things out. They often lose paperwork. Also, keep a copy of everything you purchase or pay for including parking tickets, tuition receipts etc.

    Bang for the buck

As everyone knows tuition all over the state of Texas is rising and SFA is not excluded. I would say since SFA is a smaller university you do get quite the bang for your buck though. The education is still good quality and the class sizes are manageable and more comfortable too.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love being here! The atmosphere can't be beat. There's never a boring moment at SFA. The student center is always active and the food on campus is really good!

    Am learning a lot

My current major is Interior Design. I do believe all of the teachers I have had in my one year here have been well qualified and taught me a lot! I am learning how to draft, dimension and do CAD as well as make professional presentations among many other things.

You will never go outside and not see at least three cops from your trip from point a to point b.

    Greek Life

I am not involved in greek life, but there are tons of fraternities and sororities around campus and they are always putting events together.

    Clubs and Activities

Anything you can think of that could be a club SFA has it. And if we don't then grab a friend and fill out the paperwork and it will be. Their is something for everyone.

Great for these types of students

We have a great liberal arts program and a lot of internship programs. SFA is also known for its agriculture department. The school is very into hands on experience.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

SFA fans are the best, at every event there is a purple haze section that is located right behind the competing school where students show off their school spirit.

    Bang for the buck

SFA is a state ran school and 75% of the tuition is payed for by the state. Which means you get a quality education for a fraction of the price.

    What to do for fun

There are over 400 geo-cache sites on campus. Endless events are planned each week, and the student ran cinema shows hit movies after they are released from theatres for only a buck.

    Food and Dining

Their are several restaurants on campus, including one ran by the culinary department. The cafeterias are top notch and serve a wide variety of food.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are set up to give you the best experience possible. This includes picking a roommate or if you are adventurous and decided to take the gamble but don't like your roommate you can switch out.

    Academic Rigor

Harder courses are always available, so if you want the more rigorous classes then they are their.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not procrastinate when it comes to financial aid or signing up for classes. Get involved, and definitely visit your professors during their office hours.

    In three sentences

The school is great. Classes are flexible and the professors want you to succeed. There is a lot going on in the campus, so get involved.

Great for these types of students

Great for disciplined, hard working students who also like to have fun!

    Tips for prospective students

Everyone knows that all colleges have parties. My advice is to stay away from all parties until all of your work is done. Then you can have fun and relax!

    Bang for the buck

It is a pretty reasonable price considering how much you get for the price!

    Will enjoy being here

They have a ton of activities to keep the students entertained. They have a huge student center where they have shops for supplies, cool college gear, and AMAZING eateries. They also have a workout center, 2 hot tubs, 3 pools, indoor rock climbing and indoor track. They also have a lazy river! How cool is that?

    Will learn a lot

By my standards, they have excellent teachers. They have a GREAT tutoring program for students who struggle and it's FREE! Of Course that is why they have tuition. The individual programs are great and for anyone looking for a great music school, this is it. One of the best in Texas!

Great for these types of students

    Young, fun, and nerdy:)

    Tips for prospective students

The best tip I ever received was: You can only do two out of three things greatly; Sleep, social life, &good grades. This means, do not be afraid to say No to friends when you have stuff to take care of. It will DEFINITELY pay off come dead week when everyone is studying their butt off.

    Bang for the buck

SFA is definitely on the cheaper tuition side in the great state of TX. Although tuition seems to be rising all across, SFA helps everyone stay on college budget with hundreds of FREE activities provided by the SAA. This includes $1 movies, yes ONE DOLLAR to watch a new movie that is yet to be on DVD.

    Am enjoying being here

In just TWO years, I have had memories that will last me a life time! From snow ball fights in the football field to homecoming bonfires and baking parties with roommates, fun can definitely be found in this small, but loving, town.

    Am learning a lot

I've definitely had a struggle or two with certain teachers, but overall, I've sincerely enjoyed going to class. I recommend sitting in the very front of the class, that way there would be less distractions.

    Everyone!

    Tips for prospective students

SFA is a great place is to go school. My only tips are to get involved once you get accepted. It's easy and it is worth it.

    Bang for the buck

SFA is a more affordable school than many state universities. And they try to keep things affordable, including discounts for students for certain events. If your money is going to SFA, it's a good cause. Because you will love it. It's well worth it!

    Am enjoying being here

SFA is a great college to attend. Coming straight out of high school, I was extremely nervous about college, but I at the same time I was ready to get away from home and do a little growing up. SFA was the perfect place for that. SFA was the only school that caught my attention and held it. The people at the school were so nice and always ready to help out. Everybody was welcoming and made the campus easily feel like it could be my new home away from home.

    Am learning a lot

SFA has a great staff. The teachers are awesome and really help students make sense of the material. Since the school is a little bit on the small side, there are fewer students assigned to each class. This is great because students can then have a one-on-one approach to learning with the professors.

If you are dedicated to your work yet a social butterfly, this school is for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get discouraged at the school it is hard work. If you don't get in move on, there are a million schools like Stephen F. Austin.

    Bang for the buck

It is totally worth the cost just be prepared to work as hard as you party.

    Did enjoy being here

The school was terrific, it was like a mini mall. Everything was available to you on campus, most people went their for a social life.

    Did learn a lot

There is no real teaching system to me, at S.F.A. a lot of the information you had was, need to know it from high school. This is about basics not about the major courses.

    Food and Dining

I work out and love eating healthy, but for the cafe to have days that they had nothing but tofu and pizza.... the students choose pizza. I wish they had bigger variety.

    Dorm Life

It depends on the dorm you get, because the rules literally made me feel like I was back at home.

    In three sentences

The school is perfect for the size and the students there, easy walking distances and all. The student teacher ratio is also perfect. But when it comes to the actual staff, it sucks! I literally transferred out because I hate the resident and the admissions staff. They all have bad attitudes and more. Me and my roommate almost died and the school did nothing about it, shes transferring to okc and im going to sam houston.

Our campus takes it security to the next level although its not very big there are a lot of bicycle cops, cops in cars, and emergency call stations about every 100 yards. plus the campus is very well lie at night.

    Greek Life

I am in Greek life and I can tell you that Greek life always extends the helping hand to the community and its campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There's always ton of on campus activities like intramural sports, raffle, scavenger hunts, giant pillow fights, and much more.

Great for these types of students

At football games everyone paint axes handles and bring the to beat and make noise, also we have The Old Stone Fort but no student has ever been in that has graduated.

    Bang for the buck

I chose SFASU over other school because it was a big school but not to big and that's where I think you get the most for your money because you cant get lost on campus, you get to know everyone, and the town love college students.

    What to do for fun

Go Greek, it change my life to join a fraternity, but also football, baseball, and softball games are very exciting, or if you wanna get certified in life guarding, CPR, or rock climbing go check out the Rec Center.

    Food and Dining

The ec cafetera always has a great omelet bar and a awesome stir fry grill. And in the sc cafeteria has by far my favorite pizza along with a salad bar that has anything you could dream of to put in it.

    Dorm Life

I lived on campus this last year. At first I was kinda scared , but it was the experience of a life time. I loved it.

    Academic Rigor

The overall of academics is great but could use a little work here and there.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit a football or baseball game and ask to be taken to where the Greek life is.

Get involved. Clubs and organizations are great for making friends and trying new things. Although it's located in a small town, there are clubs for the active types, but there's plenty of nature trails and hiking abilities in Nacogdoches. It's a very diverse town and there is plenty to do with a little imagination.

    Food and Dining

The cafeterias are open during reasonable mealtimes and offer different types of foods for everyone. There is always something good to eat at any time in the day. There are also on campus restaurants that are open even when the cafeteria is closed.

    Dorm Life

Residence Halls are amazing, the staffs are very friendly and always know the answers to most questions. The halls are clean, safe and there is always someone there looking out for you.

    Academic Rigor

Most classes are difficult, but with help from the professors and doing the readings they're manageable. The courses are often made easier by the offering of multiple tutoring opportunities available for every student.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to visit a professor during office hours, the entire reason they have them is to help students out. Get to know your professors and never fear asking for help. Also, visit the AARC at least once.

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

I never felt unsafe on campus.

    Greek Life

While I am not involved in Greek life, many of the men and women on campus participate. They seem to have lots of fun, building a camaradie unique to that kind of club. Being in the band, this was not really something I had time to pursue.

    Clubs and Activities

There are numerous opportunities to join a club at SFA. I am a part of the Lumberjack Marching Band, so that is all I really have time for. But most students participate in a club of some sort.

Great for these types of students

This is a good school for students who want to major in music and like hands-on learning. It is for someone who is on the mellow side and enjoys being outside. It also for someone who does not want to just be a number on campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are so many fun traditions at SFA. One of my favorite is the traveling statue of an Indian chief that gets to be housed at the winning football team's campus for the year if the team wins. The hand sign of Axe 'Em Jack is unique to our campus too.

    Bang for the buck

This school is well worth the money spent. I am getting an excellent education, while living in a beautiful facility. The faculty in the music department have been very helpful, offering much one-on-one help. My classes have been small, and I have been very successful.

    What to do for fun

Located in a small town, there is not a lot to do in the area, so on-campus activities are important. There are weekly movies offered there, as well as dances and other fun school-wide activities. The sporting events are an option. There is a great rock-climbing wall and hot tub in the sports facility.

    Food and Dining

The food here is probably typical for most college campuses. I enjoy the option of eating fast food on campus, such as Einstein Bros. and Starbucks. The cafeteria food is fine and plentiful.

    Dorm Life

I love my dorm! Being in the new freshman dorm, I live in a beautiful facility. My room is roomy and well laid out. The study areas are big, and I use them a lot. It is nice having girls in the same location.

    Academic Rigor

I was very challenged in all of my classes. But it was a good challenge. I had plenty of help along the way and never felt totally overwhelmed. I knew I was learning a lot!

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Make sure you are OK with a small town and campus. 2. Come ready to work and study. Partying should be well down on your priority list. 3. Meet new people. That is what makes college fun. 4. Get to know your professors and don't be afraid to ask them questions.

    In three sentences

Stephen F. Austin is a great school for someone who wants to be able to know his teachers and ask questions. Its relaxed, beautiful campus helps add to the feeling of being welcomed from Day 1. If you are ready to work hard and enjoy your surroundings, this is a good option for you.

    Campus Safety

the campus police, know as upd, patrol the campus twenty four hours a day, using cars and bikes for transportation. all over campus, there are upd call boxes; it can be used for emergency or non-emergency purposes, such as escorting a student across campus late at night. the upd office is located on the main street into campus, and they also feature an armory for those who go hunting during school.

    Greek Life

now, i don't know much about greek life, but here is what i can say: they are a way to create brotherhood or sisterhood, and there are many different types of fraternities or sororities. there are religious ones, as well as academic, social, service, multi-cultural and panhellenic ones. if a student can't find a way to fit in, fraternities and sororities are a great place to make life long friends and enhance your experience at sfa.

    Clubs and Activities

there are over 200 clubs and organizations to choose from, 200! there are multi-cultural clubs, fraternities and sororities, leadership organizations, mentoring organizations, residence hall association, intramural sports, religious organizations, language clubs, plus many more to choose from. joining a club or an organization is a great way to meet people, network, and it is a great place to make a difference.

Great for these types of students

everyone! sfa is a very diverse school; students of all race and backgrounds attend sfa. it is a great school for anyone and i highly recommend attending sfa. even if you feel as if you don't belong at first, you will because your friends will become your family home away from home, just like sfa.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

some unusual but awesome traditions or locations at sfa are the old stone fort, old maine and the ax handle. the old stone fort is a what it says it is, and those who enter are supposedly unable to graduate. old maine is a cannon that is fired after every touch down scored by the lumberjacks at a home game, and the ax handle is a special tradition here at sfa. a lot of students partake in this tradition of decoration an ax handle because it shows off that lumberjack pride that down inside, and it is a way for all lumberjacks to unite into one unite and one family.

    Bang for the buck

sfa is fairly low on prices but when it comes to dining dollars, its a little steep. you can use your dining dollars at restaurants like bleeker street, starbucks, chick fil a, freshens, panda express, zoca and a sushi and pizza place. off campus pricing is much better because they are real restaurants with real servers. the bang for your buck may not be the best, but if dining dollars are used wisely, they can last all semester long.

    What to do for fun

for fun at sfa, the student activity association puts on events year round, like, for example, sfa's best dance crew, , sfa's got talent, humans vs zombies, human fooseball, and weekly movie series every thursday, saturday and sunday nights. off campus, students go clubbing at the anex or at kamioz, as well as bowling, movie viewing, ice skating or roller skating. other things to do for fun are joining over the 200 organizations on campus, as well as joining intramural leagues or becoming employed.

    Food and Dining

on campus food is great, but off campus food is delicious as well. along north street (the main street that runs through nacogdoches), has every fast food place imaginable: wendy's, whataburger, taco bell, taco bueno, mcdonalds , and rasin' caines, all in walking distance! other restaurants include auntie pasta's, an extremely tasty and friendly local italian restaurant, along with a cotton patch, a dozen chinese buffets, clear springs cafe, casa tomas and other mexican restaurants, nacogdoches has every type of cuisine a college student could ask for.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is amazing. you get to meet new people from all over texas, learn about new things and ideas, and meet your best friends. yes, there are rules like curfew, but those are mainly the freshman dorms. if a student wants to make friends and have a jolly ole' time doing so, dorm life is the place to be!

    Academic Rigor

sfa's academics vary from what class is being taken. out of five stars, sfa is a three when it comes to academics because every professor has different guidelines for the way he or she conducts their class. all in all, if the student goes to class and does the assigned work, most likely that student will end up passing.

    Tips for prospective students

before arriving at sfa, take a tour of the campus to get a feel for things; it is small and quaint, and takes a maximum of fifteen minutes to walk all the way across campus. secondly, make sure you look at all of the housing options, the cafeteria, and the costs of everything, as well as applying for sfa's scholarship. lastly, when starting college, nobody knows who you are or knows of your background, so take the time to make new friends, engage in personal growth, and do not be afraid to be yourself and make a difference; trust me, you become noticed at this school very easily.

    In three sentences

stephen f. austin state university is located in the beautiful piney woods of east texas and is located on a beautiful, yet small campus, full of friendly and energetic staff members willing to help with anything. the staff are amazing, along with the school food; sfa has the nation's second healthiest cafeteria food, and it is divine. everything from friendly staff and professors, to great food and spacious living conditions, stephen f. austin state university is a fantastic school just waiting for the opportunity to give back to the community and to prepare them for a successful future.

    Greek Life

Is not all that cracked up to be.... especially at SFASU. If you really want to be in Greek I suggest you go else where.

    Clubs and Activities

Clubs and etc. can be fun, but most times it can get a little outrageous. Don't get me wrong I have been to clubs, but me and friends do not go clubbing all the time. Most times we chill and hang out in our apartments and we have our own fun!

    What to do for fun

as long as you have some friends then you can have fun.

    Food and Dining

Can be good sometimes.... other times its not so great.

    Academic Rigor

I'm giving five stars because SFASU have academic programs such as the AARC that helps you with your studies and class work. SFA offers you help to advance in your classes, so as long as you put forth the work and go to tutoring, while also paying attention in class, you will pass your classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Your Freshmen year, do not fall for the hype. Meaning do not come in and just party your life away and don't go to class, because it will catch up to you. When you come in make sure that your priorities are set, and you have a plan. Use a planner. Have good time management. Set aside time for only studying. Don't forget to have fun.

At the same time I have a blast with my brothers of KKPsi, love them all---AEA!!!! Join any group if possible, it will change your life for the better.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition for such a great university is not bad compared to other institutions. Money well spent.

    What to do for fun

SFA just recently build a new recreation center and it is beyond awesome! There is a lazy-river, second floor track, swimming pool, a rock climbing coarse, and so much more!! If you have not paid a college visit to this campus, then you are missing out. There are much more to do on campus such as church groups, the Lumberjack Marching Band (they sound amazing!!!!), Fraternity/Sorority groups, and much more. Have fun with what you have and explore whats out there in your college/university.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are fair and most professors are willing to help in any way possible. But do not this fairness fool you, for you should work hard no matter what. The learning culture is engaging and makes you want to absorb as much possible. Knowledge is power and it will better you for the future. Do not sell yourself short! Take advantage of your resources and excel!

    Tips for prospective students

Work hard and live life, knowing that your goal is reachable. There is time for everything so manage your time well for time will not be your best friend. Because with time management, your life will be a lot more passive than those that do not manage their time.

    In three sentences

Students seeking a true education don't bother if you just want to party or play football and get passed along. You are expected to participate, show up and pass your tests.

Axe 'em Jacks, as a freshman you will receive your Axe handle. Decorate it however you want. You can take it to all the home football game to support our team. Mine is purple with a ¢??J¢?? carved in it.

    Bang for the buck

After I made my final decision on SFA I realized that not only am I getting a good deal but also they worked with me to help pay my tuition in payments. The financial aid office and the business office were very helpful in getting me in the door and are still very helpful now that I'm here.

    What to do for fun

On campus there is a movie theatre, huge gym, I can hang out in my dorm or join a club. They have school-sponsored activities going on almost everyday.

    Food and Dining

The food is good and I love having a dining card. They have different food each day so I never get bored. I only wish the cafeteria was open on Saturday.

    Dorm Life

I was lucky to receive a roommate that I like and a great room. I love being able to come and go. I love being able to do as I please. I have a microwave and a refrigerator.

    Academic Rigor

I have only just started my academics but am pleasantly surprised by college education. My instructors are real people who I can relate to. We don¢??t just learn out of a book and recite facts back, we communicate to understand the concepts. To have an opinion and voice your opinion is encouraged.

    Tips for prospective students

I looked at several schools; both schools I wanted to attend and schools that I wanted to see a comparison too. I choose SFA because of the location and the emphasis on education and not sports. It is a beautiful campus with a lot of history and the energy level of the staff and students is over the top!

    In three sentences

I am a freshman at SFA and I love it! The instructors are great and I feel this is a whole no start with expectations or preset code of what to do and what not to do. I know its just begun but I can already feel some of the best years of my life beginning.

There are police riding around in cars nd bikes all the time. If you ever feel scared to walk alone you can always press the emergency button thats like every 8 yards away.

    Bang for the buck

A lot of things around here are pretty cheap just because this is a college town and the community here knows that we are broke college students.

    Food and Dining

Food is so great here!! Nothing else can be said.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great sometimes I just wish that our CA could control our neighbors more with affirmative action with they are loud.

    Academic Rigor

Academic rigor is pretty hard but nothing is actually hard here. Teachers give you plans so that you can keep up, schedules, and etc. So there is no way failing could be a option unless you just don't study.

    In three sentences

I would have to say that Stephen F. Austin University is a 10 because they have a lot of organizations that can keep your academics up. THey have like the AARC, SI, and walk in tutoring. This really helps a lot of students that are in need of help with classes.

I don't know too much about this part.

Great for these types of students

SFA is great for agriculture students, nursing students, etc.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

SFASU being a old school has alot of traditions that you'll just have to come to the school to check out yourself; but they have things like this annuall watermelon bash, basically eating watermelon, they have a ring dip ceremony, chief caddo, purple haze, etc.

    Bang for the buck

The school tuition fees are reasonable not too pricey just right compared to other universities.

    What to do for fun

For fun there are a lot of parties to go to if you're into that kind of thing. There's also a movie theater that's okay though it's pretty pricey now a days. There's some places to shop not very many; but there is a mall in a city named Lufkin about 20 minutes away.

    Food and Dining

The food isn't all too bad, there are some parts that remind me of cafeteria food from high school; but there are other parts of the cafeteria that are wonderful, like the salad bar, pasta/pizza section, dessert area, etc. They have a variety of different on campus fast food as well like ChickfilA express, chinese food, burger joints, pizza, frozen yogurt and ice cream, smoothies, mexican food, starbucks, etc.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life isn't all that bad; but if you don't like sharing a room with someone make arrangements ahead of time to get your own space. Other than that there are lots of events held in the dorms that are always fun to join in on.

    Academic Rigor

The school isn't too tough you have to get into it's actually fairly simple in my opinion. The academic classes aren't hard if you study and prioritize everything.

    Tips for prospective students

SFASU has a very friendly community, the Professors and other staff memebers are very helpful and keep you up to note on things going on around school. Keep in mind this is a school in the woods so if you have bad allergies come prepared.

    In three sentences

SFASU is a wonderful school to attend, it's not too big not too small. The campus is very beautiful during all seasons. It's an outdoorsy school so if you like the outdoors SFA may be the place for you. It has a wonderful rec center with all the equipment you could dream of having to work out as well as indoor and outdoor pools, a rock wall, basketball courts, tennis courts, racket ball courts, etc. Some of the buildings are somewhat old; but they have beautiful architecture. The nursing building is very beautiful and only about 2-3 years old. Note: the nursing building isn't on the main campus, it's about a mile away.

They have Chick-fil-a! That sold me. They have various types of food for anyone's taste. There also is a Chili's right across from the campus it you want to go out.

Student Activities Association and Campus Rec are my favorite!

    What to do for fun

Join an organization(s), you will meet many people with similar interests as you! It's not so much WHAT, but WHO you do it with.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria has a lot of options varying from hamburgers, sandwiches, a salad and pasta bar, burritos, and they will have days where they will have a special meal (Chicken Fried Steak is my favorite!). But if you get tired of this, they have many food options around campus including a Panda Express and Chick-Fil-A ON campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Learn how to set goals, motivate yourself, and get involved! You are on your own, and it is up to YOU to push yourself to succeed. Being new to campus can be overwhelming, but you are not alone! There are organizations all over school offering an opportunity to meet new people and get you set on the right track.

    In three sentences

SFA has great atmosphere to spend your college career in. It is smaller school that offers that small town feel while still providing a great education. Unlike a lot of the larger colleges, you really get to know everyone around you including the professors who are more than willing to assist you in your endeavors.

    Campus Safety

There are constantly cops patrolling campus, usually on bike. SFA has installed blue-lit poles strategically across campus for students to use if ever they need to call for help or just ask for a cop to escort them back to their dorm late at night. Also, for those who like to drink (or have friends that like to drink), SFA offers Driving Jacks, a free service that students can call to get a no-questions-asked lift back to campus.

    Greek Life

I'm not personally involved in Greek Life, but I know that it's plentiful on campus and those who are involved in it love it. To my understanding, the policy at SFA is: If you're interested in Greek Life, check out several before making your pick so you can choose the one best suited to you and your interests.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of organizations for you to join on campus. SFA has a large Greek life (though there's no penalty if you don't want to go greek), a variety of honors organizations based on major, volunteer-focused groups, and more. Also, SFA has a whole street of churches off one side of the campus and a variety of church groups to go with it.

Great for these types of students

SFA is great for students who don't want to be lost in the crowd at a larger university, but still want to get a full college experience.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

SFA is drenched in tradition! From our folklore fear of stepping into the Stone Fort on the edge of campus (if you do, superstition has it that you won't graduate) to our purple spirit (wear a purple shirt and sit in the purple out section of the football stands), SFA doesn't lack school spirit and tradition. And don't worry, when you come, they'll tell you all about it (like how we were almost the SFA Pinecones instead of the SFA Lumberjacks).

    Bang for the buck

SFA is a great place at which to get your degree. You'll get to be in classes with knowledgeable professors, but without too hard of a workload that might prevent you from making friends and doing activities. More important than the classes though, I would say are the experiences that SFA can offer. Last semester, one of my classes had me volunteering off-campus at a retirement home while another sent me to assess students at a local elementary.

    What to do for fun

There are TONS of activities, programs, games, etc., etc. occurring on campus. If you get involved with campus organizations, there are even more. The one caveat? Most of them are during the week and there are few activities on the weekend. Of course, that means the weekend is the perfect time to catch up on homework... or you could always create your own fun.

    Food and Dining

SFA offers a variety of choices in the dining halls and has some fast-food options on campus (Chick*Fil*A and Panda are the two well-known ones). I've heard that the wide selection at SFA (there's always an option of sandwiches, pizza, 'junk'-ier food (i.e. hamburgers, chicken patty sandwiches, hotdogs, etc.), or home-cooked food) is excellent compared to other schools, but, as with anything, after you eat it day after day, it tends to get old.

    Dorm Life

SFA has a committed residence hall association that works to offer many different programs and activities in the various dorms, though, if you're not interested, you're not required to attend. I've loved both the dorms I've lived in (Lumberjack Landing and Wisely Hall), but, of course, it's sure to vary some depending on which dorm you live in.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are not very academically rigorous here if you have a well-rounded background and a decent work ethic; however, if you're a struggling student, they'll help you build up that background knowledge and work ethic, providing you with lots of support along the way. Also, though classes aren't always challenging, they often offer a more practical side to academics (i.e. field-experience).

    Tips for prospective students

If you're deciding between another school and SFA, wait before deciding. SFA is one of the slowest schools to get scholarship information out, but they also tend to give out a lot of scholarship money. Also, visit the campus and talk to professors from the major (or majors) you're considering at Showcase Saturday. It'll give you a better idea if SFA is going to be the place for you.

    In three sentences

SFA is known for its beautiful campus, but it also hosts helpful professors and friendly students. College life isn't lacking here by any means - SFA has a multitude of organizations with which you can get involved. At the same time though, your grades won't suffer, because SFA hires a great staff and has an excellent support system in place (just check out the AARC).

    Campus Safety

While the campus may be well lit, and safe. Let me warn that things happen, and you might as well be prepared. Walking back alone? Phone a friend, have them walk back with you if they're close by, carry a charged phone, flashlight, etc. If you have an evening class, walk back with classmates if they are going in the same direction! Know your local university police phone number handy, just to be safe. Just make sure to stay safe :)

    Greek Life

I honestly do not know :(

    Clubs and Activities

Join clubs! There are on for sports, major, interests! It's a great way to make friends with people that share your same dreams or pastimes!

Great for these types of students

I'm an environmental sort of person, I like watching the trees, and squirrels when I walk to class everyday, the short walks in between classes, etc. If you're a city person, maybe it's not for you, but if you are looking for a new experience away from the babble, you may like it here (clears your head)!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

They just put in a new tradition at football games this year, where the freshman class of that particular year get to run out onto the length of the field out begin the game! It's really fun, and you get to sit in awesome seats at the end.

    Bang for the buck

Money is always a problem! But it doesn't need to be! You don't ABSOLUTELY NEED something, don't buy it. Save your cash. If you need essentials like food, water, etc. if you can go home, go home and stock up there (parents are a great resource). Buy in bulk (water, supplies, food, etc.) that way you won't run out as quickly. Borrow from your roommate (they might be willing to share something you don't have (food, water, can opener, Advil, etc.); just if you do borrow and need to return it to them, return it (you never know when you might need to borrow something again!)

    What to do for fun

Make friends, join clubs, join hall activities and games. Just keep busy and don't stress.

    Food and Dining

The food here is not that great, but it is food. I'd rather have something to eat everyday than nothing at all. There are other places to go to both inside the student center, dining cafeterias, or off campus. If you do eat off campus, make sure it's not every week (money runs out fast when you least expect it).

    Dorm Life

I personally like it, but it might not be up to everyone's standards. Spice it up, decorate it (pictures, art, posters, etc.) Make it your own so you won't grow tired of seeing it everyday! Clean off your desk at the end of every week to clear your head (trust me this works, it's de-stressing to see some clarity in such as small space!). Talk to your CA's (all of them) get to know them, ask them questions! Know your dorm hall phone number (you might need help). Interact with the front desk, they'll help! Do laundry when you need to (wash in large loads to save time and have a batch of clean clothes at the ready)

    Academic Rigor

Academically, this school is the same as every other. You just need to move with the flow and give it your best.

    Tips for prospective students

Do your best, Seek help when you need it, don't wait until the last minute. Go to SI or tutoring. Seek out people who will help.

    In three sentences

I personally like it here. It suits my taste of an university, but it might not be for everyone (nearest mall is next town over). I like the atmosphere, professors, students, people in general.

SFA has Jack Camp for incoming freshmen which offers a way for them get to know the school better and make friends. The Purple Haze section at football games is always fun to be apart of and helps encourage school spirit. 'Surfing Steve' on campus is the statue of Stephen F. Austin and always a good place to meet for big events.

    Bang for the buck

The school really is not that bad in price when compared to other schools. The experiences had here are definitely worth the cost of attending SFA.

    What to do for fun

It's always fun to attend one of the sporting events on campus. However, I most enjoy attending the dollar movies on campus every week in our Student Center Cinema. The Recreation Center also provides many opportunities for fun including swimming and dance classes.

    Food and Dining

The food is quite good on campus. We have a great variety in choices of food. The two cafeterias on campus are always inviting. SFA also has a few fast food restaurants in the student center which provide a good break from the usual routine of the cafeteria from time to time.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life provides opportunities to meet new and exciting people everyday. Some of the most treasured college stories you'll hear involve living in the dorms. SFA's residence life is fun, exciting, and safe.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are very important on campus. In fact, SFA is the home to several academic honor organizations. As long as students put in the work, there is no reason why he or she should not be able to graduate with their degree along with a thorough understanding of their chosen majors.

    Tips for prospective students

I would advise prospective students to get involved on campus. College can be quite boring if all you do is attend class and go home. Being involved in different organization on campus will bring you fun and friends that will probably be with you for the rest of your life.

In the center of our yard we have a statue of Stephen F. Austin that we call Surfing Steve because it is a waterfall that has the statue looking as if he is surfing.

    What to do for fun

There are tons of campus organiztions to join as well as greek groups. SFA has a great recreation center that is fairly new with everything you could possibly need/want in it. It has a rock climbing wall and a great pool. We also have a movie theater in the student center that plays movies on most weekends during the school year, the rec center is free for students and the movie is only one dollar. There are always programs and events going on somewhere on campus so it is hard to have nothing to do.

    Food and Dining

I enjoyed the fact that I could eat without having to cook myself. There are some dishes or foods that are better than others but overall I had a good dining experience.

    Dorm Life

I lived on campus in the same dorm for my first 3 years at SFA and I really enjoyed the campus dorm life. Some dorms are better than others (i.e. community bathrooms vs. having a bathroom in your room, or some come with fridge and microwave and some do not) so be sure to research them to see which would be a better fit for you.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips for future students would be to go to a Showcase Saturday or do a personal tour of the campus to see it before making any decisions. Talk to a few professors from the department or major that you are considering to get a better idea of what to expect and also don't forget to add SFA to your FAFSA if you haven't already.

Great for these types of students

SFA has something for all types of students. It is one of the top forestry schools in the nation, but the psychology program (which is what I went in for) is awesome too!

    What to do for fun

There are always activities around the campus and university. You can go for a walk through the nature area, or football games (it's Texas after all). There are things to do around town as well. I will admit that there were a number of days that I just stayed in my room though because I felt that there wasn't anything to do - it is a small town.

    Food and Dining

There is a pizza and salad bar in both cafeterias, and they strive to come up with new food and rotate it regularly. Of course, by definition cafeteria food can't be the best through.

    Dorm Life

Depending on the dorm that you get of course. I lived in Hall 10 - an all girl's academic dorm and it was pretty nice overall. I worked and lived in the Village later on and it was nice as well - though it is much more lenient.

    Academic Rigor

I understand different classes are more and less difficult. I remember sleeping through my math classes and getting an A, but all the classes for my major were intense and I had to stay focused for the duration of the class.

    Tips for prospective students

Dorm Life is pretty nice. I know that they have dorm wars frequently. They also have newer more updated dorms, as well as the older historical dorms. Its a really nice mixture of new and old.

    Academic Rigor

I wouldn't say all of the classes are really hard. It really depends on your professor. Each class is different as well as each professor.

    Tips for prospective students

The only tip I have for someone looking to come here is that you have to be serious about your education.

    In three sentences

First off the campus is absolutely beautiful! They have great on campus activities, and they are very serious about education. This is a great school to attend and I would recommend it to anyone!

    Campus Safety

UPD does a great job of keeping us safe and we have over 100 emergency call boxes on campus

    Greek Life

    Our greeks are great!

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many things to get into from The alliance, NAACP, academic clubs just too much to name

    What to do for fun

We have a bowling alley down the street, a movie theatre, a night club across the street there is lots to do.

    Food and Dining

Most of the great food places are all in walking distance so you won't get tired of the cafeteria food. We also have many varieties on campus such as a pizza place, Panda Cafe, Chik fil a, and other places.

    Dorm Life

It is what you make it. Most of the people are nice and we just got new dorms built that are very nice.

    Academic Rigor

We have a lot of students to make the Dean's list and these past few years have been our largest graduation years where we had two ceremonies.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not go there and lose focus on what you are there for. It is very easy to get trapped in the party life and forget why you are there.

    In three sentences

The campus is very beautiful, especially the hills and everything. The people are very friendly and always encouraging you. The learning environment is great, small classes so you get that extra help you need.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't freak out. Be open to people and don't skip classes!

    In three sentences

Choosing Stephen F. Austin was a great choice. The atmosphere is great, and I love the faculty. I look forward to the experiences and opportunities waiting for me as I complete my education there.

Great for these types of students

Small classrooms, small town, medium campus, away from parents! >:)

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Find out yourself. Come to SFA!

    What to do for fun

Clubs, going to the gym, organizations: sororities, fraternities, lumberjack marching band! etc.

    Food and Dining

Not too bad. Meal plan is very expensive. (1550 a semester...ridiculous)

    Dorm Life

All I can say is: you get used to it I live in Hall 16, one of the cheaper freshmen dorms, and it is really not that bad. Yes there are loud people, but what do you expect? I believe Steen is better, however. If you want a private bathroom, it's the way to go. Communal restrooms are not my thing...(it's doable, though. You get used to it).

    Academic Rigor

Like any school, you have to give effort in order to succeed. SFA is no exception. It is up to you to succeed. You may have to pick up a book and teach yourself more than the professor has done so, but so be it. The professors I have encountered showed interest in their profession, especially in the science department (I am in the college of math and science). Academics here at SFA are great. Just study, go to the AARC. Study as much as possible until you get it. Ask questions if you don't get it.

    Tips for prospective students

I was once in your place: on the computer for hours looking up every school I was interested in and scrutinizing every detail in order to know what school it'd be and if it was right for me. I was in your place once, and I hated it. But now the dust has settled and I reside and study at SFA in Nacogdoches. I believe it has been the best choice I have made so far in my life. I understood it to be a rural town and quite frankly, it is. However, it is exactly what I love. It is quaint, quiet, and not too over-bearing. I love SFA. I have made amazing friends, have fallen in love with everything SFA, and have come to like the color purple even more. And the pine trees! Beautiful! But in seriousness, it is solely up to you to decide. Don't let someone's negative review steer you away. Don't let a positive review be your only guide toward picking a school either. Choose wisely. If you know you will have a hard time paying for college pick a cheaper route. The govt. covered all my costs without me having to pay out-of-pocket (loans, however, that's a diff. tale). Good luck to you! Shout out to the LMB (Lumber Jack marching band). Joining: best decision I have made within the school!

    In three sentences

    It will grow on you.

    Campus Safety

This is probably one of the safest campus that I visited while I was searching for colleges. There are always bike police riding around, police patrolling and there is a police station on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 200 clubs and organizations at Sfa. my first semester I was involved in the criminal Justice Association, African Student organization, and the NAACP.

Great for these types of students

1.Students who are looking for an academic challenge 2.party animals 3.Ag. Majors

    What to do for fun

Nacogdoches is a small city so the college really makes the city. There are parties every week, and there's always something going on, on-campus.

    Food and Dining

The food here really sucks, but what do you expect from a cafeteria! Dining dollars are available if students prefer fast-food

    Dorm Life

when I first applied to the dorms I was hoping to get Lumberjack Landing, but I ended up staying in Hall 16. Although, this was my last pic for a dorm I really enjoy staying there. (there's always something going on in the lobby) If you want to stay away from the general freshman population Kerr is your choice!

    Academic Rigor

SFA classes are challenging, but its college what'd you expect. just remember that partying is not your first priority and you'll do fine. I slacked my first semester and still managed to get a 3.3.

    Tips for prospective students

-Always be on-time for classes. -Study for test throughout the week. -Always carry an umbrella. -do your best!

    In three sentences

Stephen F. Austin is an amazing university, my first year here was amazing! you'll have fun, meet people and make amazing connections that will last a life-time. I plan on spending the next three years here, Axe'em Jack!

    Campus Safety

They have police everywhere. There are structures here and there that all you have to do is press a button and a guard will be there in 5 minutes to escort you. On the down side, SFA is one of the top schools for rape victims and drug abuse. So good luck!

    Greek Life

If you're a girl: You have to be skinny and wear makeup all the time to be accepted. You also have a dresscode of short shorts and their specific shirts. Dresses on special occasions. If you're a guy: I don't really know

    Clubs and Activities

Those that are in them, like them. They have plenty for everyone. Whatever suits you. You just have to go in and get outgoing so they will accept you. Remember, they all have their own friends so it's not like they have to work for your friendship. You have to work for theirs.

Great for these types of students

The ones who want to go into nursing: Take your pre-recs elsewhere. The teachers are much harder here and only accept As and Bs into the nursing program. They will gladly take a straight A student from somewhere else than a B student from SFA. The ones who want to specialize in deaf ed: It's pretty cool I hear. You have to major in it if you want the chance to get into a signing class. Or take them over the summer, they book really fast. Anyone else: Well... eh

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

You decorate an axe handle to take to games... woopie. That's really about it. There's a bunch of school spirit here and there, you just have to find it. Oh, and all the kids sitting on government aid sit in the middle of campus yelling and laughing loud. It's no use reasoning with them, even if you're in the quiet section of the library. I'm sure it's like that at all campuses though....

    Bang for the buck

Don't act like you're rich and go out to eat all the time. Yes there's a starbucks and chick-fil-a on campus, but those cost more than the off campus. Go to the bike trails if you're bored. Go to walmart and buy smarter foods.

    What to do for fun

Work out at the rec center. They have tons of programs (that's already been included in your tuition)... Study for classes. Join a program and make friends. It's boring going to school and having no one to talk to. Don't join Greek Life. They are known for their constant partying and low grades. You're paying for college. You can party when you have a job later.

    Food and Dining

It's actually not bad at all. But if you get a meal card, use it. That's how they can afford to make nice meals. No one really uses their cards. And the meals are $10 a pop if you don't have one. The best is the 1-a-day card. You get one meal each day that you can stuff your face but you aren't oblidged to more. Then just cook at home.

    Dorm Life

I commute back and forth each day but from what I hear, It's not so great. They only have one really fancy dorm. That's the one they show you on orientation day. But of course those are already filled. The ones you get are super cramped. Your beds are lifted above the desk. It's like a large closet really. The boys and girls are supposed to be in each others rooms at night. But they don't check and it's free reign in the day. Be sure you get a neat freak as a room mate or you'll never see the ground. Oh, and lock your door always because people help themselves. And at night, drunk students stumble in thinking it's theirs. The kitchen is downstairs if you want to cook. But if you cook cookies, make extra because if they smell it, they will come expecting some for them. Just get an apartment.

    Academic Rigor

The people that care, go to class. Those who don't, fail to show up until the testing date. It's really 50/50

    Tips for prospective students

Don't apply unless you are certain you want to be a lumberjack. If you wanted to go somewhere better, your attitude will always be lacking because it's not that great. Try to live off campus with a friend, they get all of their money from housing and incoming freshman. Don't take the SFA 101 course. It's a waste of time and money.

    In three sentences

The greenery and surroundings are nice. I don't think the customer service is acceptable. People have been cheated out of $12,000 in scholarship because they wanted the transcript personally delivered, not faxed, and no one mentioned it until after the due date.

    Greek Life

Wish the sorority I wanted to join was available on campus.

    Bang for the buck

Mmm cost too much to attend

    What to do for fun

Parties are always fun, and also joining other groups on campus.

    Food and Dining

Food is ok, but it go old eating the same thing every week, they served the same foods on certain days.

    Dorm Life

I had decent roommates, but their boyfriends always seemed to live with us too. I hated that. Never moved off campus though.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes were more difficult than other, it just depended on the teacher.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips are to focus on a certain major to prevent changing later on down the line. Try to graduate in the typical fours years. It is not fun staying any extra time.

    In three sentences

SFA is a great school. The financial aid office is a little difficult, but overall I had a great time there. The teachers are awesome too.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria food is really bad.

    Dorm Life

It is ok, just that it is expensive and you have to pay for the meal plan if you live on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Study hard, and if you need help just go to The AARC, this is a wonderful resource where students can go to receive help with their subjects. If you ever have a problem, you can contact UPD and they will assist you in any way possible.

    In three sentences

I thoroughly enjoy the size of the school. You are able to really connect with the professors, and you are not just a number in the system. There are so many resources available for students to receive assistance in their academics.

    What to do for fun

I usually go to the recreation center and work out. It's a good place to release some stress. The Nacogdoches town also has beautiful trails that are good for running and bike riding. Also getting involved has its perks and that's what I usually spend my time on and giving back to the community.

    Food and Dining

Each meal plan has dinning dollars students can use around campus. The food is buffet style and on certain days is pretty good or not appealing.

    Dorm Life

I've lived on campus for 2 years now and it has gave me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people. The dorms vary in prices but the cheaper ones are not too bad. Having to use a community restroom has its downfalls but custodians come in everyday and clean then. There is a RA on every floor that can help you with any needs or concerns you may have. They do a good job at making sure students are living comfortably.

    Academic Rigor

Any major can be challenging with the classes one has to take but each class has its own challenge. Many business classes I've taken prepare me for the next and the more upper level classes get you ready for the real world. It shapes and helps students understand the functions of the professional world and challenges students to work even harder.

    Tips for prospective students

It can get boring in a small town but there are many organizations around campus students can join. Being involved is a great way to get the true college experience and begin to network with other students as well.

    In three sentences

Stephen F. Austin State University has such a beautiful campus with everything near by. My school is all about unity, integrity, respect and school pride and everyone is willing to help one another. Even though it's a small school, it benefits the students from getting that one and one with their professors.

    What to do for fun

There's plenty of things to do like go out to parties, host a study groups, host a game night, go to Sfa games and root for your team like some crazy maniacs! Just be yourself and the fun will come to you! (:l

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria has a lot of great foods but after a whole you just kind of wish they would stay away from the things they cook often. They also have 10 other places you can get good quality food from on campus, and if you don't want any of that they also have a whole line up of fast food places and restaurants right across from the campus.

    Dorm Life

I live in hall 16, it's a co-ed residence hall located on the far side of campus. It has a really great atmosphere and everything the only thing I don't like is the loudness of my hall because of random females running up and down the hallways like they are at home with their parents. Also they have ridiculous fees for the smallest things.

    Academic Rigor

Most of the professors are really straight forward, but there are a few that you should stay away from. Use ratemyproffesor a lot when registering for classes.

    Tips for prospective students

If you have to live on campus as a first year freshman; stay away from HALL 14. Trust me, those are the worst freshman residence halls. It's known as the campus zoo for multiple reasons.

    In three sentences

Stephen F Austin State University is a great place to attend it has a great atmosphere. Even though Nacogdoches isn't the best place to reside because it's so plain and old; SFASU is filled with fun people and great school spirit. It's a great place to fulfill your goals in life.

    What to do for fun

Become involved, join a group, stay outdoors and explore the town!

    Food and Dining

The cafeterias provide a variety of food to choose from. Though, they could use a little more work and prepare better meals.

    Dorm Life

I have stayed in dorms, for half of my college experience. Dorms are gateways to making friends and staying involved! Don't shut yourself out!

    Academic Rigor

Classes are what you make them and the effort you place upon them! If your going for an 'easy' major, expect to have easy classes. If your going for a more hard-working major, expect your classes to be more strenuous and tough!

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking for a school to get involved in; this school is for you! Also, keep in mind your degree plan, map out the classes you are suppose to take and most importantly keep track of it! Don't fall behind, if you do, then make sure you stack up on your coursework and bust your bootie!

    In three sentences

Half-way through my college year, I have to say I have enjoyed my last 2 years here at SFA. I made many friends, met great professors and have attended many seminars and readings by poets and many educational people worldwide.
