Around Town

The problem with Stony Brook is that it is in the middle of NOWHERE. They like to falsely advertise that they are just a train-ride away from the city, but in reality, that train ride is over two hours long. If you like the house party scene, you might be interested in joining a fraternity/sorority -- they host their own parties every other week. There are few bars/clubs in the area, so good luck with that. Fortunately, the school is attempting to amp up their on-campus weekend events, so hopefully it will be less painful to stay there during weekends. Otherwise, the school is a ghost town come Friday afternoon! Honestly, you just have to make the right kind of friends and you should be able to turn every experience into something fun.

For the commuter students, it's a bit hard to find things to do for fun. The Strawberry festival is always amazing, and the new gym on campus is incredible. I love going there after a hard day of lectures.

Join clubs and explore the university.

The new recreation center has a lot of courts for various sports. There's a lot of great areas like the Staller Steps for frisbee or football. There are off campus bars and clubs as well as clubs on campus you can join for volunteer and leadership activities.

I usually hang out with friends. Play basketball or indoor handball. If I am feeling up to it, I sometimes workout.

Whether you want to play a game of some kind on the Staller steps. Go to fun events hosted in the Student Activities Center or just tour around the campus with your friends, you'll always find something to check at almost any point.

For fun, there are always student run activities on the weekends, the attendance at sports games such as lacrosse, football, and basketball is growing, and the sports are improving, so those are always something fun to go to. There are a couple places around campus you can go to, but the nightlife does need some improvement.

There are so many clubs and organizations you never get bored.

Take a walk around the town of Stony Brook or take the train to the city and have fun over there. You don't even have to leave the campus to have fun because the fun will come to you. There are concerts, drive in movies and so much more there is no space to write everything.
