Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you like to meet new, interesting people, then this is the place for you. The students and staff embrace you, and everyone is like one big family. There's always something to do on campus (talent shows, guest speakers in the forum, events in the courtyard, etc.) so you never have to worry about being bored. All in all, Tennessee State just has that homely feel. GO BIG BLUE!!
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to meet new people. You'll make a lot of lifelong friends during your enrollment, and networking is always good for the future. Be sure to make a good impression with all of your professors. The more you communicate with them, the more familiar they become with your face and the more they are willing to help. Get involved! There are so many wonderful organizations on campus, ranging from community service, greek, and simple just for fun clubs such as those that represent your hometown. But most importantly, stay focused! Your education is your main priority; let everything else follow.
Am enjoying being here TSU is my second home! There's NO place I'd rather be!!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students A multi-diverse cultural environment campus, with a seemingly serious commitment to gain their degrees, but financially slow.
Tips for prospective students Always know what you want to do before making a commmitment to any school, whether it is to go to school to learn, to interact with other peers or to just get away from home, but know for sure what you want beforehand.
Bang for the buck Oh indeed, I think that well spent money always can be found in gaining a good education because that money is never lost.
Will enjoy being here I am slightly older than the average student at TSU, but I have never let that keep me from my goal of achieving ahigh education..
Will learn a lot I believe that I will receive an excellent education and gain very valuable learning knowledge at TSU.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Be sure to take the ACT or SAT seriously because it the better your score, the better you'll be. Make sure you save money because college is expensive all the way around. No matter where you go! You still need some extra money in your pocket for hard times!
Bang for the buck For instate student, this college is very inexpensive! It might be a little costly for out of state students but its still affordable and completely worth it.
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being here because it is a great learning environment that also know how to have fun. Everyone is full of school spirit!
Am learning a lot I learn a lot of things here. This college is a great place to be. I love the experience!

Categories Comments Campus Safety *** safety has not been an issue. plus i always travel in a group. doors are locked at all times and you have to use an electronic key to get in to the dorms.
Greek Life there are greek organizations for everyone.
Clubs and Activities many clubs to choose from. ***
Food and Dining typical cafeteria food. some of it is really good. there are a lot of choices to choose from. ***
Dorm Life great... i have met a great group of people such as the ra's in the dorms who help you with any questions you may have.
Academic Rigor the school challenges young black men and women to do there best. there are high expectations to succeed. ***
Tips for prospective students make sure you have copies of everything you have submitted to the college, such as transcripts, financial, aid and immunization records, especially if you are an out of state student. it makes a big difference in the registration process and placement of classes.
In three sentences i love this school. the professors are great and willing to help you. the faculty and staff are helpful as well.

Tips for prospective students College is what you make it. College can be fun if you go out and make it that way. It can be boring if you don't do anything or communicate with others.
Am enjoying being here College life is getting better. It starts off rough but will get better with a positive attitude.
Am learning a lot I have learned many things while here. Since some classes are small, its easier to have a connect with the teachers. Being at TSU also teacher how to be independent.

Categories Comments Campus Safety No campus is ever completely safe, but we have gotten a lot better with student safety by hiring guardian angels to walk women to dorms after sunset, and we also hired more security throughout campus.
Greek Life Tennessee State University also has many greeks to choose from including the Divine 9.
Clubs and Activities Tennessee State University has over 200 clubs and organizations to choose from, there should be no reason for laziness. GET ACTIVE !
Great for these types of students Tennessee State University is great for students who are trying to find themselves from an academic and personal growth standpoint.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We don't have any unusual traditions, we keep it pretty classical.
Bang for the buck You can't put a price on happiness, and I am an out of state student. my tuition is 30,000 a year and although it is a pain and struggle sometimes I am happy at my HBCU and love my experience.
What to do for fun There are TONS of activities on campus everyday to keep you occupied outside of class. We have game rooms, TV rooms, and sometimes forums, guest speakers, and events are held. The most recent we held a concert on campus open to only our students.
Food and Dining The food is pretty amazing, especially fried fish Fridays and wing Wednesdays, and college students dream!
Dorm Life Dorm life could be a little better, which is why we are currently under construction, and so far renovations that have been made look wonderful.
Academic Rigor The wide-span of majors on campus are ridiculous, there should be no reason as to why you can't find something to suit you. My major is computer science and teachers are very hands on. All class sizes are a reasonable size of 30-50 students at max and give you one on one attention that may be required.
Tips for prospective students Get your financial aid done ahead of time, those lines are ridiculous! Join lots of clubs, and become familiar with the campus and peers. Student government knows everything, so go to the meetings they're open.
In three sentences Tennessee State University is a campus that is filled with opportunity and chances to change your life. The atmosphere is a family oriented, and a welcoming vibe for new students. The staff care about you as if you were their own.

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus has proven to be very safe, well lit and has ample security.
Greek Life i have not experienced greek life at this point in time.
Great for these types of students self starters, highly motivated, indipendent, mature and responsible.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus i don't know of any at this time.
Bang for the buck education is priceless. the return on investment will be worth the financial commitment i have made.
What to do for fun games, social networking, fraternity & sorority events & local postings of upcoming events.
Food and Dining the school supplies well balanced meals for all students.
Dorm Life apply and send deposit for housing as soon as possible. it determines where your dorm is located on a upper or lower floor.
Academic Rigor must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average to remain in attendance.
Tips for prospective students contact the institution to find out about available programs that offer additional credits. continually follow up on applications submitted for financial aid.
In three sentences tennessee university has proven to be a fine educational institution. it has provided me a rounded educational curriculum plan during my freshman year. i am currently pleased with my choice.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I believe that campus security could be stronger. There are a a ton of officers but they just don't do a lot. I would like to see a more rigorous approach.
Greek Life Being that TSU is an HBCU all Greek fraternities and sororities exist on campus. The ones that are traditionally black are more plentiful.
Clubs and Activities Again they are many in number and type. Non of which I have first hand knowledge of.
Great for these types of students All students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The only unusual thing I have experienced is that all junior level students must take a rising senior exam before they obtain their senior status.
Bang for the buck TSU is a strong competitor with other local schools because of its reasonable tuition. I would recommend checking it oust for those who are financially challenged, like myself.
What to do for fun I do not have first hand knowledge of campus organizations but can attest to the fact that there are many to participate in. Some are academic and others extracurricular.
Food and Dining I do not participate in any food plans as I do not live on campus. However, there are many quick stop places that are on campus which is very convenient. There are also many restaurants within walking distance from campus that serve a variety of food.
Dorm Life I have always been an off campus student so I can not give an accurate rating of dorm life.
Academic Rigor As with any school, you will have your professors that are more lenient and there will be professors that are very thorough. Be expected to be challenged.
Tips for prospective students There are a few basic but very important information for prospective TSU students. Make sure you check back with the administration offices (registrar, financial aid office, etc) as this is one of the main short comings if the university. I can not stress enough to check and double check all aspects of of your student standing with the university as I have encountered many mistakes with proper grading and classes being canceled without notification. In a nutshell, you can not allow the university to handle your business. You need to also play an active roll.
In three sentences Tennessee State University is a school of great diversity. The student campus life provides a myriad of organizations for its students. Non traditional such as myself are quite common in on campus classes which eases any anxiety one may have returning to school at a later age to complete their education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus gives you a booklet to read over about safety on campus. It is a great resource to use.
Greek Life All of the organizations are present on campus. It gives great benefits as well.
Clubs and Activities Organizations are fun to join such as the Greek Life there are many of them. If you have school spirit Cheerleaders and the Tiger Gems is the way to go! Activities like those are fun to do.
Great for these types of students Love Band? it is great to join TSU band. Everyone loves to watch the band perform.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus This past year the 100 years of academic excellence and tradition as Nashville only public university has been celebrated on campus.
Bang for the buck Exploring just the campus is fun but the city is amazing. It is a calling for all sport fans! and their mouth watering foods.
What to do for fun Organizations are fun to join such as the Greek Life there are many of them. If you have school spirit Cheerleaders and the Tiger Gems is the way to go! Activities like those are fun to do.
Food and Dining The food and dining is amazing. On campus there is a Chick- Fil- A, Pizza Hut Express and a Deli. The fast food eatery Chick- Fil- A is known for their chicken sandwiches, waffle fries and lemonade.
Dorm Life Dorm life is based off academics. They are comfortable and should fit needs of anyone. Has a good vibe to it.
Academic Rigor Focusing on your education is a top priority for the students and teachers as well. Classes are a nice size for students to focus. They also can get one on one time with the teachers.
Tips for prospective students Even though you have to be serious about your work there are fun activities you can contribute to the community of Tennessee State University. The people around are helpful and dedicated to keeping you on track
In three sentences Tennessee State University is a comfortable environment were students can interact and share a bond with each other. They are committed to excellence that mold you into taking on responsibility to achieve your goals in life.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There has been a great improvement from my freshman year. Guard post have been up-graded, the police center has been moved onto the main campus and security is around the clock. Locals are not able to get into campus like before, and if anything happens the response time is quick.
Greek Life All of our Greeks are back on the yard, just crossed 9 new lines, and are ready to show pride, assist the community, and celebrate TSU's Centennial year.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs and activities for everyone. It ranges from SGA, to Robotics, to health science, to Honors organizations, and many more!
Great for these types of students Engineering, nursing, health sciences, business, communication, and agriculture majors. While TSU is diverse, it is also a great institution for African-American students to get in touch with their heritage and appreciate their history.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have several school spirit dances and songs. Courtyard Wednesdays are when everyone (who is not in class) gathers in the courtyard of the Floyd-Payne campus center to mingle and watch Greeks stroll. At the end of every event, the Alma Mater is sung.
Bang for the buck If you are instate the total cost is no more than about 17,000 per year. Out of state students are not so lucky at about 32, 000 per year, but starting this year, if you are a high academic out of state scholar, the school is cutting tuition in half! Check with financial aid for more details.
What to do for fun We may be known as a party school (who isn't), but there are many different activities to do on and off campus, it just depends on what interest you. We have intramural spots, arts and crafts, community service, radio, plays, etc.
Food and Dining Thank goodness Chik-fil-a was added to the Sub. The main cafeteria food is just cafeteria food and it has its hit and miss days, but the best food is served at the Avon-Williams Campus (the downtown campus). If you are down there you should definitely eat there!
Dorm Life The dorms do need to be renovated, but they are livable. The water, air condition, and safely are all up to pare. Just take care not to be messy or tear things up. You will be fine.
Academic Rigor Depends on the major and what type of student you wish to be. Just like at any other institution, you EARN your grades.
Tips for prospective students 1. Record and document all offical papers for your personal records; if a problem arises, you will have all the hard copy proof available for administrative offices. 2. Complete FAFSA, housing, scholarships, and other aplications EARLY! I recieved many opportunities because of this. 3. Campus and community involvement is a great way to network and not make school feel like just school. 4. You do not have to join every campus organization and it looks better on futur applications to have quality involvement not quantity. 5. Be yourself and do not be afraid to venture down other avenues. College is about self growth as well as academics. You will never know what will help you in the long run if you do not push yourself out of your comfort zone. 6. Have 100% pride in your school and never let anyone talk down about it. Once you join TSU, you are appart of a family. Take care of your family and they will take care of you. Majority of the time, the sceptics do not even know what is really happening on the campus.
In three sentences Tennessee State University is great Historically Black College/University that offers traditions, values, opportunities, and expections for scholars with a desire to achieve greatness that trasends collegiate matriculation. While never forgettign its deeply rooted history, the institution hosts students from all backgrounds and nationalities, including individuals from at least 41 other countries. Everyone is expectd to uphold the Unveristy's motto of Think, Work, Serve and make a difference in the world.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus overall is safe, there are police who are on campus on bikes, and mopeds during most of the day. However the campus is located in a very urban neighborhood where crime is high. It is best to always stay with a buddy.
Greek Life TSU currently has all Divine 9 Greeks in addition to Phi Mu Alpha, Sigma Alpha Iota, Alpha Phi Omega, Gamma Sigma Sigma, and other Greek Honor Societies.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities from the NPHC, to community service clubs, city clubs, major clubs, etc. You will find something to fit your personality.
Great for these types of students Great for students who enjoy a challenge, want to join a fun organization, and love being around African Americans.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus For freshman there is a candle light ceremony to welcome you to the campus. You dress in all white and have a chance to meet all of your new classmates.
Bang for the buck Network with upper classmen to buy your books. The bookstore is very pricey.
What to do for fun There are so many organizations at TSU that provide activities for students to participate in on and off campus. Nashville is also a great city full of shopping, attractions and fun.
Food and Dining There is one main campus lunchroom and they have 5-6 different food stations ranging from salads, pizza, home cooked meals, stir fry, hot dogs, etc. There is also a Chick fil A, Pizza Hut, sandwich shop, Starbucks, and chicken place.
Dorm Life The dorm rooms are not the best at TSU. However, they plan to build a new dorm by the year 2014. Hale, Rudolph and the on campus apartments are the best living spots.
Academic Rigor The classes at TSU can be challenging, therefore it is important that you make professional relationships with your professor. Although the classes are hard, there are many resources to help you succeed.
Tips for prospective students To make the best of your experience, apply early, keep a copy of all paper work, network with administration and join clubs and organizations.
In three sentences TSU is an great school, full of educational opportunities, networking, and fun. You will become apart of the family. It is vital to stay on top of your work and paperwork at Tennessee State University.

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus safety is very low. we have plenty of cops and they are not seen alot. lately since the shooting they have been out.
Greek Life this campus is full of greek life and very exciting!
What to do for fun tsu is known as a party school. there are many parties off campus to attend. not much on campus is fun except for the school activities, but nashville has alot of places to go.
Food and Dining the food is the same. i say we eat chicken atleast three times a week. not much variety, especially for a vegetarian.
Dorm Life the dorms are horrible. tsu should really get money to make the dorms better.
Academic Rigor classes are not too tough but they are a bit challenging.
Tips for prospective students for future students i'd say stay away from the crowd, and join clubs. find something you can enjoy that can keep you occupied and away from the bad crowd.
In three sentences tsu is a great school and has alot of oppritunities for their students. i can truely say tsu cares for the students, its just a matter of them caring for themselves. this school is always credited for its bad things but it is a great school and has many great aspects.

Categories Comments Campus Safety isn't that safe
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the location of the campus isn't in the best area, so you have to make sure you stay safe and stay out of areas that doesn't look safe.
What to do for fun during my free time i like to go party, play video games, attend different activities through out campus, and work out.
Food and Dining the cafe has some pretty decent foods most of the time. some days the food isn't so good. you also have the choice of chic- fila, pizza hut, and some other food places that are good to eat instead of the cafe.
Dorm Life boyd hall isn't the best kept up dorm, but the rooms are kind of big.
Academic Rigor the classes i'm in now aren't to rigorous but they aren't to easy.
Tips for prospective students i recommend that a prospective student should have above a 3.0 gpa so they can qualify for scholarships. make sure you have made the right college choice based off of your thoughts of it, not anybody else. then you have to make sure that you have good time management skills.
In three sentences the academic program here is good so far i am a transfer student. there is a lot of activities to do for students to stay active. it does seem like anybody can apply and get into the school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is not very safe for males, i have heard stories about robberies and fights. On the other hand campus safety for females is great.
Greek Life I personally love the Greek life here. Both the fraternities and sororities are very involved around school and in the community. I hope to join a sororities in my later years.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities here. They really try to get people involved and to join them.
What to do for fun Like any other school there are parties you can attend to have fun. You can just walk around campus and have fun really, there are also people outside that you can engage in conversation with.
Food and Dining The food in the cafe is okay. There are some days that the food is a bit off, but there are many choices and varieties of food that you can choose from. Also if you don't want to eat in the cafe, there are many other places you can fulfill your appetite at. TSU has Chik-Fil-A, Dippers, Starbucks and Pizza Hut.
Dorm Life The dorm life isn't really great for me, I suppose its okay. I have no complaints about the dorms besides the bathrooms. The sharing of the bathrooms are not good. The bathrooms are not quite up to par.
Academic Rigor The classes are challenging, they really make you think. With my major being biology my classes are rigorous and i always have to stay on top of things. The teachers are really great, they stay on task and they know what they are talking about.

Academic Rigor TSU academic program is astonishing. I have learned so much just by only being here one year.
Tips for prospective students Just keep your faith and your head held high! I think TSU would be a great choice for any student.
In three sentences I honestly think this is the top HBCU college there is. i receive a great education and my colleagues are the best. I really adore TSU and glad I chose to attend here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have had drills and situations that test safety on campus. There are emergency stations in various spots on campus that you can push and talk to an officer from the spot.
Greek Life There are many organizations parading around campus. There are weeks designated for the greeks in which they can decorate the student center. It was fun for the whole campus. Also there have been many coming out parties in which the new members were welcomed.
Clubs and Activities The honors program is excellent. They breed programs, clubs, and activities for everyone on campus. There was an inception project based on the movie decide our major, build skills, find our strengths and weaknesses, and help us. The SAY (Success And You) program is being built from the ground up as I type. There are always new things coming.
Great for these types of students Students who look for opportunities , students who make the best with what they are given, students who want to join honors but are tired of the work being shoveled on them, students who want a cheap institution, but still want to strive.
Bang for the buck I never had any money, so this was my cheapest option. 17,000 a year in-state isn't bad. I have been exposed to many programs and opportunities people wouldn't expect just glimpsing at Tsu. I have come to love Tsu.
What to do for fun I go to Gentry Wellness center to hit the gym, play basketball in the courts by gentry and the dining hall. There are also talent shows, concerts, and other activities on campus.
Food and Dining The food is a little repetitive. I have my favorites though. WE have Lucky Charms, Cinnamon toast crunch, Reeses Puffs cereal, along with a salad bar, sandwich bar, omelet/rice station, along with a main line, and line for hot dogs and fries. Vanderbilt's dining hall was way better.
Dorm Life I live in Hale Hall, which is the Honors dorm, which is excellent. My roommate and I have 2 suite-mates linked by a bathroom I have heard it was not as good an experience in one of the boys dorms and I have not heard about the girl's dorm. I believe they have a bathroom for everyone.
Academic Rigor It is a challenge. I received a 3.35 1st semester and I am once again aiming for a 4.0
Tips for prospective students 1) Join the Honors program. The opportunities and help are bountifull. 2) Apply for scholarships even when you are in the door with the 1st semester paid for. 3) Make sure people know you for the right reason. 4) VOLUNTEER WORK GOES A LONG WAY and don't be afraid to talk. I recieved a job opportunity for being active and showing interest in the work and my major.
In three sentences Tennessee State Univeristy is not as bad or low class as many people expect it to be. It would get a 3 out of 5 as far as college experiences go. I am enjoying it.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are tons of organizations to get involved in,not to mention sports and government.
Food and Dining The food is pretty good. There are fast food places .cafeterias. and cafe' where your can eat.
Dorm Life i dont live on campus.
Academic Rigor the classes are very good as far as I know. The classroom sizes are small like grade school so it makes learning easy.
Tips for prospective students Stay out of trouble and bad crowds, research your teachers and make sure they are a good one, make sure all your information is done correctly, and do well in your classes.
In three sentences Out of a 10 i would give TSU a 7. I say that because the school is given a very bad reputation within the community but it is really a good school for education. It is however placed in a rougher part of town but the school is vastly improving and the departments are as well.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you are looking for a good HBCU to attend Tennessee State is the school to attend.
Bang for the buck I love Tennessee State University but like any university it can get expensive especially if your an out-of-state student there like many of their students.
What to do for fun For fun on campus I hang with my friends. Walking to class during the week you can find students in the court yard enjoying each others company.
Food and Dining Many choices to choose from in the cafeteria, and if you do not have time to go to the cafeteria you can stop by the sub and grab a sandwich, or pizza from pizza hut, there is also a chick-fila, and a kfc o campus.
Dorm Life There are many different dorms to choose from, but Tennessee State makes your dorm experience one to love and enjoy.
Academic Rigor Professors are so helpful in making sure you understand the material. There are many resources on campus to help guide you in many courses.
Tips for prospective students Do not give up Tennessee State University helps you in so many ways to accomplish your goals.
In three sentences Tennessee State University is a wonderful school. It makes the college experience great and one to really enjoy. I recommend this school to anyone.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are always campus security at TSU. If there were ever an emergency, it will not be hard to find them.
Clubs and Activities I am not in any clubs at the time being, but I can say that the activities are awesome. There is always something you can do at TSU.
What to do for fun Tennessee State has many different activities you can do on campus. During the day, they might have music playing and people dancing in the courtyard. They even have a forum you can attend to listen to speakers talk about everyday life topics.
Food and Dining The cafeteria food at TSU is pretty good. There is a good amount of food you can choose from.
Dorm Life My experience with dorm life has been good. I stayed in Wilma Rudolph Center for a year and I have to say I enjoyed it. The Resident Assistants are very nice and they make sure they are there if you happen to need anything. All around, the dorm is very clean. There are custodians that come in everyday to clean the community bathroom and to mop the floors.
Academic Rigor You will get a good education at TSU. The teachers make sure you get all the help you can in order to pass a class. They make their assignments and tests challenging enough to make sure you are learning it, but not so challenging to where it will be too difficult to understand.
In three sentences This is a good school to attend. There are many activities to do on and off campus. Student life is always exciting.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is not the best. The school does a great job of having security around, but the security does a bad job of doing their job, when it is time to be done. There has been accounted robberies, and fights, but if one protects themselves, do not walk alone, and be mindful of their surroundings, a person can easily be safe.
Greek Life The Greek life on campus is great. Mainly the Alphas run the campus, but there has been new line's of their fraternities, and sororities as well, so their statuses have gone up as well.
Clubs and Activities There is a host of organizations for students to be a part of. No person on campus should not be a part of at least one organization. As far as activities go TSU needs, a little bit more work in terms of their on, and off campus events, but if one is in an organization, then more than likely their organization will be a part of an activity.
Great for these types of students Several organizations are on campus, and is great for any student wanting to join an organization based on their majors, talents, or any other type of arena one may enjoy.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The courtyard, the student center, and the game room, are the three main places on campus where students mingle and chill with each other. On wensday in the courtyard the Greek life, strolls, and steps, and their is a Dj outside in the courtyard to play the latest songs for persons to dance to and have some fun, before going to their next class.
Bang for the buck Parties are usually the hotspot, and the sub, is the place where most TSU students spend their money on.
What to do for fun Organizations try to hold seminars, small venues, or maybe even a two hour party in the campus basement, but mainly parties is the hot spot for college students at TSU, or other venus in the heart of Nashville, that one can attend
Food and Dining 3 starts is what TSU gets for its food and dining, any person that has a meal plan can enjoy three meals a day, or one can use their free $200 given by the school to purchase any on campus restaurant such as Chick-fil-a, Pizza Hut, and Dippers.
Dorm Life I would rate TSU dorm life a 2, because it does need a little work in some areas, pertaining to mechanical, and up-to-date appearances.
Academic Rigor I would rate TSU 3 stars in the academic criteria, because I have personally meet several students who have 3.4, and even higher GPAs, but I have also meet students who decline the academic rigor at TSU with uncomplenteray 2.5 or lower
Tips for prospective students Any students that may want to attend TSU, should know to make sure to keep your grades up, do as much community service while on and off campus, be in as many organizations as one can, and hold yourself with respect as a man, or lady, because persons can easily take advantage of the weak minded persons.
In three sentences Tennessee State Univeristy, is a dynamic HBCU, where anyone attending can make themselves become successful. It is a place that may need work in certain areas, but it is a college where one can easily work, and play at the same time. TSU is the home of the tigers, and college in general is what one makes their tiger home.

Categories Comments What to do for fun The campus always has activities on campus. The campus have forums that are very informative and entertaining.
Food and Dining The food choices are limited but there are places close and around campus. The cafe is really good. I enjoy the food there, it is a different variety each day.
Dorm Life The dorms on campus are average. Some look worse than others but those are usually the freshmen dorms. The upperclassmen dorms are pretty nice and clean.
Academic Rigor Each class had its own challenges but the teachers are very helpful and make themselves available outside of class to answer additional questions.
Tips for prospective students Do no let the campus activities get you away from your studies. Stay focused at all times. Do not be afraid to get involved and network.
In three sentences Tennessee State is a university full of opportunities. It is plenty to do to get involved on campus. In addition to the activities, the instructors are more than willing to help and prepare us for the class as well as the future.

Categories Comments Campus Safety About the same as most campuses. Is an open campus, and is in a not so great part of town. As with any place, taking the necessary precautions in order to stay safe is a must. Don't be stupid!
Greek Life Awsome! Has both African American greek systems and academic greek systems.
Clubs and Activities A ton!
Great for these types of students Any and all!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A ton of Greek events all school year long, especially in the spring!
Bang for the buck Good if you are an in-state student. Not good financial wise, if you are from out of state. They don't have many programs or scholarships that help people like me from out of state.
What to do for fun There are always parties going on somewhere, either sponsored by greeks at TSU or any of the many other colleges in Nashville. Also, TSU has a ton of stuff going on on campus sponsored by school groups which are always a blast! More of a reason to stay on campus!
Food and Dining Unlike most colleges, the food here is awful. The cafeteria mainly. It is rare that you will have anything good in there, but again, like the dorms, it is all about the experience. Having a good time with friends while sitting in the caf, all a part of the college experience.
Dorm Life Of course dorm life sucks! Living with someone else in close quarters, never turns out great, but everyone should do it for at least a couple of years. You might hate it at times, but you will probably have the most fun and meet the most people when you live on campus. You will be sooooooo out of the loop if you live off campus those first few years, you really will have missed half of the college life.
Academic Rigor I think that when you first start, the academic rigor is not all that high, I was one of very few that didn't have to take any remedial courses. After your second year, when you really get into your major classes, the level gets kicked up quite a few notches because they want you to be able to go out into the work world overly prepared and surpass anyone's expectations of what a graduate of a black college should look like. You will be ready when you leave, much more so than most.
Tips for prospective students Remember that you are at school to get an education and leave with that coveted degree in your hand. TSU is a party school, but you can easily have a great time and stay ahead of the game academics wise. I did more than my fair share of having fun yet still was able to graduate with high honors with my degree and certification. You have to know what your priorities are. That is what college is for, to learn about ones self, have fun, and getting as much education out of it that you possibly can. Don't waste your money or time!
In three sentences A very good school for academics. A great school to get the college experience. Some of the most caring professors you will have along with a small atmosphere.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is always something to do. Every Wednesaday there is courtyard Wednesday where there is live music
Food and Dining Wednesdays and Fridays are the best. Plus there is Pizza Hut and Chickfila
Dorm Life Never room with someone you know. It never works out.
Academic Rigor You have to want to learn yourself. Study. Study. Study.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for the Big Blue Country.
In three sentences Tennessee State University is a great school. It really prepares you for the real world. You have to make the best of your college experience to achieve a higher learning because no one will do it for you.

Categories Comments Campus Safety They are great about sending email updates on security issues occurring on campus. Although I don't attend on campus class they keep me updated frequently and on the occasions I have visited campus there are always visible security to give a sense of safety.
Greek Life I cant say much on this but I do know they offer a variety of clubs and sororities to join.
Clubs and Activities The school offers many activities for all students. No matter what you like you will find something fun to do. I also like the many clubs they offer and the fact that they do not neglect to include the off campus students such as myself.
Great for these types of students Young students that like the social aspect of campus life as well as older students such as myself that need an online format to enable them to return to school at their convenience.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The campus has this great park area that makes outdoor study relaxing for students.
Bang for the buck I rate TSU 3/5 because the staff has always been friendly and helpful when I have had to contact them. However I have to deduct a point for availability because I do find it difficult to actually reach a real person when trying to call the various departments such as financial aid etc. Because I attend via the online classroom, I frequently need to call for help and advice. Reaching someone usually takes at least 3 or more attempts. I also have to deduct a point for organization. On several occasions I have had to resend documents because they have been lost or misplaced. I do give them points for convenience. I love the online program they have and if it were not for this format, I would not have been able to return to school to finish my masters degree. Last but not least they get points for always having professors that are available and friendly.
What to do for fun The university has many opportunities for interaction with other students and staff. While I do not attend an actual classroom, the web site always has updates about upcoming interesting and fun activities for the students.
Food and Dining I have visited campus on several occasions and the food and dining choices are comparable to other campuses. The plus is that because it is in downtown Nashville it is close enough that you can leave campus and get just about anything you want and still return quickly for class.
Dorm Life Although I am attending TSU through an online format and cannot say alot about the dorm life, I do receive frequent updates about campus life and security. They are great about keeping the students informed of possible threats to safety occurring on campus. I believe this would be a big plus if I were living in the dorms.
Academic Rigor I have found the class work challenging at times yet interesting. Although I realize the classes are based on a standardized curriculum, the instructors add their contribution and make the material more interesting.
Tips for prospective students The biggest tip I can give to any student planning to attent TSU is to keep copies of all forms and items submitted. I have been attending this university for two years through an online format. Although the overall experience has been positive, I find their organizational skills lacking. I have had to resend documents on several occasions because they either said they did not receive them or they were lost in the shuffle. This can be problematic when you are working on a deadline.
In three sentences I believe fair, accurate assessment is always a plus. I rate TSU 3/5 with 1 being the lowest score and 5 being the highest. This is based on convenience, availability of department, friendliness of staff, organization, of staff and professor availability.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Know what a step dance is.
Bang for the buck Knowledge out weights the cost, by ten fold.
What to do for fun Very close to downtown Nashville, and there are all the attractions that Nashville has to offer that you can do.
Food and Dining Great on and off campus selections
Dorm Life I live off campus, so I guess it's okay
Academic Rigor There are some classes that will be very challenging and some that are easier to complete it really depends on what you are taking.
Tips for prospective students Read the chapter before the lesson. Do your homework, even if you don't turn it in, and don't be afraid to ask questions.
In three sentences It has small classes which give you the personal attention you need. Help is available to those you reach for it. It's what you make of it, so work hard, they don't hand you anything.

Great for these types of students If your ambitious, enjoy socilaizing, love tradition and that family feel you'll fit in. Also if you believe in Think, Work, and Serve motto we're just for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We have Courtyard Wednesdays is always fun. It brings life to the campus and student life. We also visit the amp theater which is very nice. Alot of students sit in this area and socialize.
Bang for the buck Well if this means how much does the university cost, it can be expensive for out of state students but with Christ, and determination all things are possible!
What to do for fun I am actually an athlete. So we are always busy but our campus has alot to offer especially if your from out to state. We always have something to do on campus.
Food and Dining TSU dining is very tasty. I'm from up north so I love southern styled cooking :)
Dorm Life I defintely enjoyed my dorm life. Especially with being on the same floor with my teammates.
Academic Rigor I love Tennessee States education. Very challenging but they hold you at a high standard.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It has really improved, because we are on an open campus, so they make sure when people come on campus they belong here now, our president has really put in work with making sure people are on campus who belong here.
Clubs and Activities AMAZING, greek life is amazing to watch, and possibly join! Our games for all sports are exciting, the band is Amazing. The dance teams everything!
Great for these types of students All students!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Nothing really, there is something for EVERYBODY, and I mean Everybody.
Bang for the buck As an out of state student. IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE, you would think they would offer a little more scholarships for us, Instate people, there was an article about students from Memphis who take up most of the population, decrease our academic ratings. I think we should pay the same. Who cares where you are from, if its the same, instate will still come for an education, out of state will come more than likely, a little difference is fine, but they literally pay half as much as we do. But TN takes up most of the population. I know many people from out of state leave because of the cost, the most people you will find out of state are athletes.
What to do for fun In college you have to know how to be responsible, there are parties, ALL THE TIME. There are also bbq's fish fry's. Sec week is AMAZING free food, homecoming, Greek Weeks. At an HBCU you will get an experience like no other, really. You really just have to be responsible. Its a test.
Food and Dining Its getting better, the recent SGA president did a lot to help with dining. I think we had more options when I was a freshman, but the food is still good, but they do have their days.
Dorm Life Wilson- The freshman girl dorms are nice, rudolph is nice, eppse is nice besides the community bathroom. Wilson has them too, but its better. One thing is visitation, they let us vote but never give it to us. We are grown nobody wants to sit and look at females all day. Maybe they are trying to put less people at risk for STD's and HIV, but people are grown you can't keep us separated. In the coed dorms they try to say you can't visit the males in your dorm. I just think we are grown, stuff happens.
Academic Rigor It is definitely not easy, but its college. They offer A LOT of help, they have tutoring, study sessions, and many outreach programs to help the students in their studies. They work with the students as well, especially when your suffering in a class. They are there to help.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you stay on top of the people in financial aid, it has gotten better with the new president, but sometimes things don't get put in place when it should. Like me my loan wouldn't come until after classes start but they knew it was coming so I emailed them to make sure they wouldn't delete my classes.
In three sentences I love My Tennessee State. There is None better, the only downfall would more than likely but the out-of-state cost, and how much they help with that. It is in a nice community, and its very homelike.

Food and Dining Eat a balanced meal.
Dorm Life Monitor your habits and customs around your roommate.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety could be a whole lot better. Tennessee State dealt with alot of issues such as robberies, shootings, and other things around the campus that could've been avoided with the right protection. Campus safety should really consider stepping it up.
Greek Life The Greeks are always out and live around campus, it's a wonderful sight to see. All the greeks are very friendly and helpful. I would love to join someday.
Clubs and Activities Clubs and activities on campus are very welcoming, anybody can join. These get you known around campus for positive measures. Don't hesitate to join.
Great for these types of students Their are clubs available for just about any students. Students should get involved being getting in a club helps you bond with diffrent people and create life long friendships. Theses clubs welcome anybody.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The courtyard on Wednesday's we always have all the Greeks come out and have a Dj it's a very fun experience. I though this was unusual by it being in the middle of the week. It's a great experience being in the middle of the school in the grass field.
Bang for the buck The school is exspensive but you can't put a price on education. Education is a terrible thing to waste and it's a very valuable investment. I have to say at Tennessee State University your money is well worth it.
What to do for fun Their is always something around campus that you can get involved with for fun such as court yard Wednesday's, Sets, programs, and ect. Study groups are very fun and particular pulling all nighters studying for important test. You'll become very social with all of the events.
Food and Dining The school's cafeteria is absoulutly delecious. They have varieties to fit everybody and complete meals. The meals constantly change so that you don't constantly eat the same thing.
Dorm Life My first year dorm life was tough, my roommate went messing, our dorm has a flood, and last our dorm had a shooting on the inside and a victim was shot and injured. After all these things I was kind of worried but I pulled threw. At the end of the day it was an experience that I don't regret.
Academic Rigor Academically Tennessee State University is a great school. The teachers are their to help you and not despise you. The teachers take extra time out of ther personal lives to help you with anything that needs to be done. Almost every class at the University has tutoring sessions that help you also.
Tips for prospective students Future students please be prepared for things that you've never experienced and people you've never dealt with. You'll be in for a great experience. Be social try new things and meet new people.
In three sentences The rating I would give Tennessee State university is fair. It's a very complicated Financial Aid process. It's also a tough process with your Advisor. Once these two things are handled your good to go.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Like all campuses it is not a 100% safe, but the TSU Police Department has a service where you can sign up for texts that let you know when there is a threat on campus. Additionally, we have security light post all over campus.

What to do for fun There is a lot to do on campus. We have a game room, TV rooms, we have special guest, and so much more. Off campus there is bowling, shopping, and movie theaters.
Food and Dining The Cafeteria food is very typical. Besides the cafeteria we have a Food Court that has Pizza Hut, Chick-Fil-A, and Montague's Deli. We also have a Coffee Shop that brews Starbucks Coffee and it also serves Smoothies. In one of the Residence Halls we have a Chicken Restaurant called Dippers.
Dorm Life The dorms are very small. As a Freshman you either live in Wilson (Girls) or Watson (Boys) and you get to know people who are in your graduating class. The Resident Assistants are very helpful.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Courtyard Wednesdays are great! Wear your best clothes on those days and there is the Haunted dorm!!!
Bang for the buck For instate students attempt your hardest to get a 20 on the act and hold a 3.0 then you qualify for a full ride scholarship like me!!
What to do for fun Just join the organizations and get involved you will have fun plus some organizations get discounts on sporting events!
Food and Dining Typical cafeteria food but they also have a few on campus restaurants that you get $200 a semester to spend at
Dorm Life Depending on the hall you get into. If you get into hale it is great!!! :)
Academic Rigor As a Honors student you will have some challenging classes. I STRONGLY recommend trying to get into the University Honors Program Where we strive to make excellence a way of life.
Tips for prospective students Just prepare yourself for a new environment, take your senior year seriously because it will determine what classes you get to take your first year and just be ready to have some fun, School comes first but be willing to have fun with the school.

Categories Comments What to do for fun We have many organizations on campus and various events that take place on campus. Of course you'll have your parties and social events, but not only on campus, but in Nashville there are many events going on around the city and other campuses.
Food and Dining The food in the cafeteria is good, but everyone has their own opinion so that's something you'll have to judge yourself. But if you are not into the cafe food, we have a few dining places where you can buy your food: fast food restaurants and coffee/ smoothie shop on the main campus.
Dorm Life There are always problems associated with dorms. Try to avoid trouble that occurs in the dorms and maintain your living space. And make sure you lock your valuables and your door.
Academic Rigor Academically, you'll be challenged. So let your teachers know who you are, go to tutoring lessons, and find someone in your class or major to pair up with to go over notes, information, and etc.
Tips for prospective students Get to know your teachers, advisors, and your course program. It'll keep you on the right track to graduate.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The security is very serious about protecting their students. They patrol regularly at all hours and ask for identification to make sure no one suspicious or who isn't a student won't cause trouble.
Greek Life The Greeks...will surprise you. Whether or not you join is no pressure at all but expect to see them chanting, stepping, and dancing! They show pride and represent their chapter and all of them put on a memorable show! They love their brothers and sisters, and are always friendly and helpful.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Freshmen week isn't an unusual tradition but believe me when I tell you you need to PARTICIPATE! It's the fastest way to make friends and have new experiences! Also, there is an old and creepy closed dorm on campus. Rumors and stories about it circulate all the time! I wouldn't know if any of it is true but its hilariously creepy.
What to do for fun No matter what you're into, Tennessee State has something for everyone. Parties and activities on campus happen all the time so missing out is far from likely unless you choose not to attend. There's also something fun to do or that will keep you busy so the choice is yours!
Food and Dining One thing about the cafeteria is to expect average food. It is not unappetizing but there are times when you aren't in the mood for the usual. The on campus restaurants are delicious and worth it but expect long lines.
Dorm Life The dorms are nothing to brag about; what you may have heard about them being gross or run down isn't true but if you really want something great, aim for Hale Hall. The only trouble you could have is yourself and if you abide by the simple rules there won't be any problems. Curfew is simple and the security keep things in order.
Academic Rigor Honestly, Tennessee State is not a hard school to get into, but it'll make or break you. The teachers are involved, helpful and share their experiences but do not waste time in class. Collegiate assignments and curriculum is what is expected and will be given.
Tips for prospective students For future students, I have three bits of advice for you. First and foremost is to relax; being away from home for months at a time is definitely an eye opener but you'll be fine. Second, never stress; be it about homework, friends, parties or any activities because it will all happen naturally. Lastly, time management is key. Not having time to do something is no excuse; using a few seconds, minutes or an hour or two out of your day won't stop the world.
In three sentences Tennessee State University is truly a school for everyone. My experiences so far have been amazing and I haven't regretted a single one of them. If you're interested in a beautiful school with great and involved teachers, friendly students and faculty, and plenty of school spirit; TSU is the school for you. GO BIG BLUE!

What to do for fun While staying on a college campus you will always come across many things to do. There is never a dull moment at Tennessee State University. The options for fun are so broad; from parties to joining an organization you will never be bored.
Food and Dining Many may complain about the food that is served in college because they are so used to home cooking but the food served at Tennessee State University is as close to a home cooked meal that you will get.
Dorm Life Living in a dorm is amazing. Not only is it fun you also get that feeling of independence. Many complain about living in dorms but I love it.
Tips for prospective students Your freshman year in college will become overwhelming. It may get hard but the best advise to give is to stay focused. Do not get distracted by everything else, remember why you are there and keep your eyes on the prize.
