    Campus Safety

The one thing this university has is safety. Campus police is top of every rule. Keep an eye out for them they can be your best friend or foe.

    Greek Life

Don't think this like the movies, the university is new to the Greek life so it is in its growing stage but they do have a lot of thing for its members.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a few clubs for students they are a lot of fun some hold concerts while others have midnight paintball, scavenger hunts and other activities for its members.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who want to a great education at a low price. A laid back student who doesn't mind having some fun from time to time.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

You will have to learn about from experience.

    Bang for the buck

You will definitely get your moneys worth here. Does not even come close to other universities when it comes to cost.

    What to do for fun

It is a small city but there are sports year round, there is a professional baseball team, indoor football league, professional soccer team, and the university has a sports program that includes baseball, softball, soccer, golf, cross-country, and basketball. The university also has concerts, shows, and fitness classes thought the year.

    Food and Dining

On campus dinning is just what you'd expect from any university, not many choices but if a quick meal is what you need you'll find it on campus. Around town there are plenty of amazing local restaurants that are open late and delicious all within 3 miles from the university.

    Dorm Life

Don't expect things to get to crazy, the dorm life on campus is more casual and laid-back. Things can get out of hand but campus police always finds a way to take charge of the situation.

    Academic Rigor

It can be difficult yet the university supplies support and the professors don't mind lending a hand when things get tough.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply for any activity possible. Stay informed on policies and deadlines, late fees will sneak up.

    In three sentences

Great student atmosphere. Great amount of support on campus. Amazing Community

    Campus Safety

There are few campus cops walking around and when something is turned into the lost and found, forget about getting it back. On several occasions I have heard people losing their phones to the campus cops.

    Greek Life

The Greek life is very limited. There are no houses and the parties you would expect are not there. Being in a Greek affiliation in this campus is just something to add to your resume.

Great for these types of students

This univeristy caters to the business majors as well as the nursing students and teachers. One out of every ten people you will meet will be a communication disorders major. If you do not fit into one of those categories, stay strong to what you want to do or else the administartors will try to change your major to fit into their perfect little boxes.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Beware of the wildlife! Seriously, this campus is in the wilderness so there are deer constantly running around, no fear they will not hurt you, as well as wild boars, skunks, birds of many, and the occasional possum.

    What to do for fun

In Laredo there is not much to do. Most of the college students go out clubbing constantly. And if not that then the local mall or the movies. Laredo has a lake that is dirty, but very poplular still and a golf course.

    Food and Dining

There is the food court that consists of a burger joint, a pizza parlor and a subway. There is also another pizza parlor in another area of the campus. They all close early so don't plan late dinners.

    Dorm Life

I have always lived off-campus so I cannot fully give opinion on this, but everyone I know loves the dorms and always says its one big party there.

    Academic Rigor

This university is not very challenging, but if you are not a major that they prefer you will have a very hard time with finding classes and getting extra help.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure that you find out who your advisor's (in both the mentoring center and financial aid office) and speak with them constantly so you will not be blindsided with ridiculous requirements that you have not met or be unable to register for classes due to holds.

    In three sentences

On a 1-10 scale I would rate this school as a 3. The overall experience is not a very pleasant one, and I say this because I have attended another university out of state and my experience there was far greater.

    Campus Safety

tamiu is an extremely safe and homy environment. with campus police always on duty, college life for all the students is one of harmonious security.

    Bang for the buck

tamiu is a definite bang for your buck! tuition is very affordable, along with financial aid and numerous scholarship opportunities offered. the financial help here in tamiu is so good that many of the student's refund money is up to $2,000! not to mention the education, the experience and the friends you make are amazing and all wrapped in one great learning institution.

    What to do for fun

there are many great activities that occur throughout the week on campus such as plays, recitals, concerts, basketball games, soccer games and school spirit events. tamiu is located in the great city of laredo. just like the university, laredo is growing rapidly with movie theaters, great restaurants, parks and for you ladies, a great shopping mall that includes texas's biggest forever 21 store!

    Food and Dining

the food in tamiu is amazing! dusty's dinner is the best! so many great choices of delicious food to choose from. the best part is that there are certain days throughout the semester when you can get a free meal at the diner for participating in fun events! food and fun for free?? what more can a college student ask for??

    Dorm Life

compared to some big and popular campuses, tamiu's dorms provide the perfect privacy and living accommodations. you share a bathroom with your roommate while each of you have your own separate bedroom with a spacious bed, desk, drawer and sliding door closet! i know i can speak for many people when i say that we would all prefer to share a bathroom and shower with one single person than with the entire floor.

    Academic Rigor

the classes at texas a&m international university are all challenging but achievable. there is always someone to study with or a tutor who can help you strengthen the coursework you did not understand.

    Tips for prospective students

future college freshman, the first and biggest piece of advice i can give is to ask questions! don't be scared to ask questions because if there is anything confusing you did not understand, whether it'd be college admission deadlines, or scholarships, asking your counselor or even a college representative is always the way to go. secondly, keep a journal or a planner nearby where you can jot down important deadlines, stay on top of things and get all tasks done so you won't miss out on those great scholarships and financial opportunities. my final piece of advice is to have an open mind. many of us have a set list of universities we want to attend to but each college has something great and unique about them. visit their campuses, talk to the students, explore outside of that list because there is a great college out there for each and everyone of us.

    In three sentences

texas a&m international university is a small but rapidly growing university filled with accomplished professors, always helpful staff and friendly students. one of the best things about a small university is all the help you receive both financially and academically through many scholarships and student tutors who are eager to help you with some of those difficult courses you have trouble with. tamiu offers many opportunities, insightful courses and a successful college education.

the academics here are well enforced and have tutors available monday-friday available.

    Campus Safety

Campus security is always actively traveling through the campus. Even if campus security isn't around you do have the safety poles which have a button you can press that will alert campus security to your location.

    Clubs and Activities

There are plenty of clubs and activities that any student can be part of with a little determination. From the Glee club to the TAMIU Band there are many options for everybody. Even if you can't find the club that is right for you, all you need is a few friends willing to be part of your organization, a few more steps after that and you will have your own club on campus.

    What to do for fun

From campus events like soccer and basketball games to just hanging out with your friends there is always something you can do. Spending time at Starbucks, studying in the library or just appreciating the splendor of the campus you will always find yourself somewhere.

    Food and Dining

When it comes to the food and dining at TAMIU you will always have options. You can either choose from the actual cafeteria where the food is made or you can choose from the restaurants there such as Subway or Comfort Foods. If you don't want to eat something exactly healthy you have options and if you want to eat healthier you do have those options as well.

    Dorm Life

I don't live on campus but every new student that has orientation at TAMIU has to stay on campus and the dorms are pretty good. They are not like those expected dorms where both your dorm mate and you sleep in the same room. You have your own individual room and the only accommodations that you share are the bathroom (toilet & shower).

    Academic Rigor

    Campus Safety

The campus police have a good presence on campus and safety is of their main concern.

    Greek Life

There are several available for all majors and also several student organizations that are easy to access if interested.

    Clubs and Activities

I am currently in the AMSA organization and there are many more available. Most organizations are highly involved in student and community life.

Great for these types of students

Students seeking business, science, teaching, and nursing will find a great home here at TAMIU.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The student success center is a main location on campus where students can hang out, attend free seminars, and also find help with anything from administrators.

    What to do for fun

There is a recently renovated gymnasium that students can use and also weekly activities sponsored by the school which keep students busy and entertained.

    Food and Dining

The campus diner offers a good variety of different foods and there are also a couple of name brand restaurants available such as subway and starbucks coffee shop.

    Dorm Life

I currently do no live in the dorms but have heard from fellow students that they are very nice and close in proximity to the campus to make daily commutes easy.

    Academic Rigor

The university has well educated staff who challenge students in every aspect.

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend gathering all needed paperwork for admittance in advance to help speed the process due to the amount of prospective students submitting applications.

    In three sentences

Texas A&M International University is a great University to attend! The friendly staff and professors are always trying to help students with every need. The campus is well kept and clean, plus there are many different bonuses for students including a Starbucks coffee shop.

    Campus Safety

The campus is safe and secure. You can see an officer riding about campus just checking in to see if everything is good. It feel comfortable and secure on campus at all times.

    What to do for fun

You can get together with friends, go to clubs, travel out of town, and visit art showings.

    Food and Dining

The food off-campus is amazing and at a great price! The diversity in food is just refreshing. In campus, the prices are a bit high but the food is good as a whole.

    Dorm Life

I have friends who live in the dorms and they have no complaints. They enjoy living in the dorms and the resources available to make living in campus simple and hassle-free.

    Academic Rigor

All the majors and programs are diverse and of great quality! The professors are great and help students in any way they can. There are study groups, tutoring centers, and other resources to help with academics

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to your advisors and mentors and ask many questions. Check in with your department because there are many changes being done such as grades, adding courses to the curriculum, and more options.

    In three sentences

The Academics offered are good, great quality, and at a great cost! The professors go above and beyond to help students. The school and the faculty are amazing and friendly; they encourage us to do everything we can and want to do.

    Campus Safety

There is always campus police monitoring the entire campus on bikes, golf carts, on foot, and in patrol cars. If that still doesn't make you feel safe then there are many towers across campus that with a single push of a button will deploy officers to that exact location should you feel an immediate danger.

    Greek Life

In comparison to other universities, out Greek life is a very bad example of what Greek life truly is.

    Clubs and Activities

Most of the clubs held on campus are all run by the same people and really make it difficult for outsiders to join. If you are an outgoing individual who bleeds school spirit then this will not be a problem for you.

Great for these types of students

TAMIU is best for local students who are planning on staying for the basics and will eventually transfer out to complete their studies.

    Bang for the buck

If you are planning on living in the dorms, try and aim for a scholarship to another university as the costs will turn out to be equal. In comparison to other universities, I'd rate TAMIU as subpar when it comes to the cost.

    What to do for fun

As with any university, the fun things are: going to the rec, lounging around in the library, and attending a sporting event. Keep in mind that we do not have a football team, so attending a rowdy football game to support the dustdevils is sadly out of the question for now.

    Food and Dining

There are several places to dine on campus. We have a pizza place, subway, dusty xpress (small snacks youd find at a gas station), and a small concession area. As of today there are plans to bring a Chikfila to campus which would be a huge bonus to the school.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are not exactly the most modern in the state but then again those dorms have been around since the university was first built. There are several dorm parties every month which keep things interesting, but don't expect there to be Project X style parties every day. All in all the dorms are pretty calm throughout the entire year.

    Academic Rigor

College in itself is not that much different from high school when it comes to academic rigor, that is if you had a good work ethic to begin with. Compared to other school TAMIU might be a bit more difficult in certain courses but it shouldn't be Ivy league hard either. If you are willing to spend about an hour reading once a week and another hour doing homework then you should be able to handle the courses easily.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are thinking of applying to this university and are from Laredo then by all means do it. Financially it beats going out of town, but if you want to see what college is really like then take the plunge and apply to a university out of town. If you are from out of town and are thinking about applying to TAMIU then let me be the first to tell you to please rethink it and look at other schools such as UTSA or Southwestern University.

    In three sentences

While Laredo does not seem like the most exciting city on the map, TAMIU is a small community in itself with activities and showcases that can keep you interested. With that being said, it is very difficult to feel connected to the university, it seems as if everyone tries their very best to avoid socializing in this school. TAMIU is a great university when it comes to studies, but seems to do little to bring students together the way any other university would.

Other than joining very beneficial organizations, TAMIU offers intramural programs for the students. There are volleyball, soccer, table tournament, and etc where students can enjoy themselves in the afternoons. Plus, there are a lot of fitness classes like ZUMBA, who are specially for us women.

    Food and Dining

The food is good. We have Subway and Chick-fil-A is coming soon. We have a great variety of pizzas and pastas, which are delicious. Plus, the majority of the students get their daily dose of Starbucks.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is awesome because all the students create such a harmonious environment. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate others their talent in the Talent show at the University Village. The dorms are so comfortable because they help ease the absence of being away from home.

    Academic Rigor

School work is no joke here. We as students are put into stress with all the homework, but thankfully our professors are so flexible in order to help us maintain sane throughout the semester.

    Tips for prospective students

READ READ & READ! My best tip is to read before class, because that will help students understand the material in class. Also, they should make sure to keep up with deadlines by having some sort of calender to have control.

    In three sentences

I have been so blessed by attending TAMIU because I have learned about the diverse cultures of international students. The university has done a great job at helping students release some stress with so many fun activities throughout the semester. Plus it promotes a lot of school spirit.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is amazing, TAMIU offers to separate facilities for dorms. Everyone is very social at the dorms and the RAs are the best people. You can make friends at the dorms with no problems.

    Academic Rigor

TAMIU is a University that provides to the students many majors, depending on the major you have the level of toughness will be different.

    Tips for prospective students

My tip for students will be to enjoy what TAMIU has to offer.

    In three sentences

In a scale from one to ten I would give TAMIU a ten. The scale does not even do the University justice. My actual rate for TAMIU would be out of this world.

    What to do for fun

There is always something going on on campus. You'll see posters all over campus about up coming events. We have a festivals through out the year and fun activities during upcoming games so the campus gets really fun at random times.

    Food and Dining

We just got a Chick-fil-a this semester and it is awesome! The food is a bit pricy but it's college and I'm sure we all know it isn't cheap. I have heard that the meal plans are a good deal. I myself was even thinking of getting one but probably not until next year.

    Dorm Life

I don't live on campus but from what I've heard of from people that live here in the dorms is that its very fun. They have told me they feel really independent and have made many friends in the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

I think that the academic rigor depends on the professor. The professors I have this semester are strict and demanding and that's a great thing. This puts everyone on there best game and at a challenge to do the best that they can do.

    Tips for prospective students

I think that this university prepares students for the future with the help of the great professors who teach and love what they do. So far all the professors that I've had have for sure installed in me a good prospective for my future.

    In three sentences

Texas A&M International University might not be a big school, but the fact that it isn't so big makes those who attend be closer. Everyone I have met so far is so nice and the staff here is always willing to help out students. This campus is really something I never thought existed, and that is that I live in this city!

    Food and Dining

The food is great. There is Subway, Chik-fel-a and a dusty diner which is like a buffet. But sometimes, you do get bored of the same food everyday.

    Dorm Life

I don't personally live in the dorms, but I think its better than to live somewhere else. You don't waste gas like others that have to drive to school. You get easy access to the library. As well, you have a pool to relax.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor depends on the professors. Some can be easy and some can be very hard. You just need to be prepare and ask questions if you do not understand anything. It also depends how you look at the class, you, yourself can make it difficult or easy.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips for the prospective students is to come prepare to class. Be ready to take notes and to study for tests. If you make time for everything and have a planner, you won't be stress, but if you leave everything for last minute you, the semester will become stressful.

    In three sentences

Texas A&M International University, the name of the university is very self explanatory. The campus is very diverse, you get to meet people and make friends from other countries. the campus students and as for the faculty are friendly and help you in anything you need.

    Campus Safety

Campus police are always there to help students they drive around or bike around campus constantly. They really care about the safety of the students. They make sure that people going to do research in the bush have people that know where they are..

Great for these types of students

Nature loving people will love this campus and the abundance of wildlife here. If you love hot weather you will also love it here. The summer and late spring temperatures are usually in the 90's going into the 100's.

    Bang for the buck

The classes give you a good opportunity to learn its just a question of whether or not you are willing to do the work. There are so many options on campus that are available to help students succeed in their classes, tutoring, office hours, group meetings, emails to communicate with classmates.

    What to do for fun

On campus theres always a bunch of activities going on. Writing field day, international day, sorority day, etc are some examples of the activities they have. Theres poetry and games and food. Above the diner there is a also a game room where students typically play pool, table hockey and even smash bros.

    Food and Dining

The food at the Dusty Diner is pretty good. There are always a lot of different options. Theres a salad bar, a desert table and a bunch of other tables for choices.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are fun everyone makes friends there. You are usually left alone in you're dorm and can do what you want. These dorms are small and two people share a bathroom. There is also a pool and a lounge and grill area at the dorms. Everyone there is really free is just live like typical college students.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes vary some are harder than others, the workload might be more or less. Depending on you're major is what determines how difficult a class will be. The basics at this school are fairly easy depending on what professor is teaching it. The workload may be a lot sometimes but it is not that is not doable.

    Tips for prospective students

Some tips for future students would be take all your classes as early as you can (you will find better parking), go to class everyday and be on time (some professors won't let you in you're late), and ask questions in class and sit in the front (teachers don't like students that sit in the back).

    In three sentences

A school with a different atmosphere, connected to the blackbrush and mesquite outdoors. This school has a beauty that not many see, but the local wildlife make it unique. This university is on par when it comes to academics, but it is not a very populated in students. This university is small compared to others, but it has everything students need.

Great for these types of students

TAMIU is only good for students who don't know much of the world and don't care to. Most people here don't have passion or inspiration, they are just trying to get that degree so they can get that job so they won't be so poor (or pressure from parentals). It's not the place to go if you're an artist or would like to pursue some other liberal degree. If you want to be a nurse, a local businessman, or a teacher, then this a good school to get that degree. Not the best, but good.

    Bang for the buck

It is ridiculously cheap. If you're coming here for the college experience, then no, it's not really worth it, because you won't really get that experience. But if you're just coming here for a degree for a a job (which most people are), then yes, it's a pretty good deal. Full time usually runs you more or less around 10k a year.

    What to do for fun

TAMIU does try to be fun, however usually their events are a bit lacking. I personally never got too much into it (which is a big mistake if you plan on being here for a while). If you come here and want to have fun, just try to be involved as much as you can. Outside of TAMIU, things get pretty boring pretty fast.

    Food and Dining

From my short time here, I can say that the food was delicious. The pizza was hot and greasy (yum!), and the hamburgers were nice and tender. They don't have many options, but what few options they have are usually palpable for even the most stubborn of palets.

    Dorm Life

I was a commuter, but from what I've been told and what I've seen from the dorm options, living here is pretty nice. You get your own room and a private bathroom which you share with your roommate (who has a room right next to yours). This is a pretty big deal considering that most Texas universities have two people to one room, and most require you to use public bathrooms. There is also a sense of community in the dorms, and they have a pool. If you live in the dorms, you'll have a better time overall than if you commute, thats for sure.

    Academic Rigor

If you're used to AP or Honors classes, then be prepared to snooze. Unless you're a business major, the classes are extremely simple and easy. Yes, the professors are kind and helpful, but when you first meet them you can see how they do not expect anything from you or any of their other students. These are the type of classes you take to get a good GPA; not a good education.

    Tips for prospective students

TAMIU is only good for one type of student, and that type of student is a student from a small town who is very naive. If you're neither, you'll have a hard time finding your place in this university. Also if you hate the heat, don't even bother showing up. It gets pretty hot and the campus does have trees, but they're usually alongside buildings where there already is shade. Be prepared for long walks on cement sidewalks in the sun. And before you say yes, realize the surrounding city. It's Laredo, Texas. It isn't a very fun city to begin with, as there isn't really anything to do here except go clubbing and drinking too much booze. If you're not comfortable with that, I'd advise you to go over your options. If you still want to come here, be sure to become best friends with your admissions adviser and stay up to date with everything you need!
