Tuition, Cost & Aid

Affordability and Cost

Average Net Price Average net price for full-time, first-time degree/certificate-seeking undergraduates paying the in-state or in-district tuition rate who were awarded grant or scholarship aid from federal, state or local governments, or the institution. Other sources of grant aid are excluded. Aid awarded anytime during the full aid year is included.

Average net price is generated by subtracting the average amount of federal, state or local government, or institutional grant and scholarship aid from the total cost of attendance. Total cost of attendance is the sum of published tuition and required fees (lower of in-district or in-state), books and supplies and the weighted average room and board and other expenses.

Additional Costs
Room and Board The weighted average for room and board and other expenses is generated as follows:
  • (amount for on-campus room, board and other expenses * # of students living on-campus.
  • + amount for off-campus (with family) room, board and other expenses * # of students living off-campus with family
  • + amount for off-campus (not with family) room, board and other expenses * # of students living off-campus not with family)
divided by the total # of students. Students whose living arrangements are unknown are excluded from the calculation. For some institutions the # of students by living arrangement will be known, but dollar amounts will not be known. In this case the # of students with no corresponding dollar amount will be excluded from the denominator.

What Students Are Saying

My advice for prospective students is that you should not be driven away because of the high price tag of tuition because it is definitely a great investment in your education. The quality of the facilities and professors is amazing as well as the campus itself is beautiful. The campus offers free tutoring, a math lab where students taking math can get help, campus transportation, the bus system (which is very convienent in the rain), and the dining areas have a wide variety of delicious food. I really believe that with great teachers, and all the other things mentioned that you get the BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!
Brittney from Birmingham, AL
Let's face it, tuition is expensive no matter where you go. But, the university as well as the alumni association have awesome scholarship opportunities that truly help cut cost down. Alabama does everything and more it can do to make its students feel at home here. By coming to Alabama, you're not only getting quality education - you're a part of one of the greatest and strongest communities in the United States. Between Alabama's educational value, social atmosphere and athletic forte - you definitely get your money's worth.

If an individual decides to come to The University of Alabama it would not be a waste of time and money. The University of Alabama is one of the top colleges in the state of Alabama. Learning is a key to success at the university. Along with the importance of learning, there are several out-of-class activities on campus. Anyone who attends The University of Alabama is sure to love the campus.

The University not only uses your tuition for paying the wonderful teachers here, but they use it to better you. They use the money for building, grounds, and buses. If they see that a building is not standing up to what the university standards are, they call in a repair group. You will never have to worry about grounds, there is always someone cleaning, sweeping, mopping, or mowing. The bus system for UA is the best! Although each bus could be a little later then the normal 15 minutes, the bus system makes it easy to get from the other side of campus quick!
Lindsey from Tuscaloosa, AL
UA is more than worth the price. One thing I can say about the staff is that they are truly concerned about the success and careers of their students. It seems like they are always letting us know about the latest internships and job openings. Also if you have a question or concern about a class, the teachers will treat you as if you are the only student in the class by displaying patience and kindness.
Peter from Birmingham, AL
I'm on a great scholarship, and if you qualify, UA is very generous to high stat students, and this makes UA very affordable for most families. The suite dorms are expensive, so your first year on campus will be expensive no matter what.

At the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter they do puppy happy hour. You can take out a dog from the animal shelter for the day (within the time constraints) for FREE!
You need to have a car or know someone with a car to be able to get there. Definitely worth the 10 minute drive of campus!
Rachael from Elgin, IL
You are paying a lot, but you also get a lot in return. The professors are very knowledgeable and the campus is beautiful!
Kathryn from Roseville, CA
I have instate tuition so my tuition will be half the amount for out of state students. I pay around $5,000 a semester for my dorm, books, classes, meal plans, Bama Cash, and tuition. Seeing as though most colleges would make me pay twice that much even being in-state, I would say it's a great deal. When I first visited UA, I knew it was home and I was excited to come here, but my family is very tight for money and I was not going anywhere that expected too much from me financially. That approximate $5,000 may seem like a lot but with financial aid and scholarships to incoming students, you could be paid to come here. Some of my friends with 30's on their ACTs are not only being paid to come here but also recieved free Macbooks from the university! Everyone at UA really wants to see you shine so scholarship is given in great amounts.
