Great for these types of students

Students who are open to different cultures and enjoy being involved. Pan Am is filled with students living their college experience to the fullest. Have your priorities set straight first and you will have a blast. No one wants to make college hard for you or make you have a horrible tiime, everyone is there to help, if you believe that, you will be fine.

    Tips for prospective students

The University of Texas Pan American is a friendly college and not intimidating. Attend your classes and take the time to review your notes. If you have any problems and feel confused at any time throughout the course ask your professors, they will gladly help you. Don't be intimidated by them. Taking an extra 15 minutes to rewrite your notes and organize right after the class while its fresh in your mind will take you a long way :)

    Bang for the buck

In UTPA you get what you pay for. It is high quality education. However, there is financial aid which is very student friendly. I needed assistance in paying for my school, so I am familiar with the financial aid office. They answer all your questions and let you know the which is the better choice for you and why. They are extremely helpful.

    Am enjoying being here

Not only because i am local. I meet people from all around the world from Venezuela to France. Everyone is always smiling. There is something for everyone. Edingburg is not a huge city but it has all the essentials and Mcallen is right next door. It is quiet so it is easy to sit and study outside on the benches in the shade or if you feel like releasing stress, pan am has a brand new recreation center equipped with treadmills, weights and a rock climbing wall. There is always activities from movies to live music. It is a great college experience.

    Am learning a lot

All professors are approachable. Everyone greets you with a smile and academic advisors welcome you and tell you exactly what you need to do to get things done. There are learning centers with available tutors throughout the day if ever you need help with any of your classes. There is online help as well. It actually becomes easy to study so it no longer feels like a chore. Study groups can be found everywhere and welcome newcomers.

    Campus Safety

Always Make sure you lock your cars, look both ways when crossing the street, and prevent from walking alone at 11pm at night to your car. Security is all around campus, and there are Emergency buttons almost at every corner.

    Clubs and Activities

UTPA offers different activities including; Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer, Flag Football, Co-ed Kickball, Softball, Baseball, etc.

Great for these types of students

Low Income, People who don't want to leave the valley.

    What to do for fun

At UTPA, they have a rec center just like any other University. They have a lot of activities that you would enjoy to do. Zumba, Intramural sports, club sports, etc. We have a lot of organizations that organize events for the whole university including Homecoming. We have a lot of famous novelists come down, as well as motivational speakers. It is something we all enjoy seeing. On Halloween they have something that has to deal with Zombies I think it's called a zombie run. UTPA students get to be made over into zombies and they are let out loose around campus and they have to catch the humans.

    Food and Dining

In the student Union, we have Mexican food, Subshop, Smoothie place, starbucks, and a convenience store. There is ONE cafeteria around campus, the food varies every day and I think is delicious. They SHOULD have more variety though. Currently UTPA is going through some changes. They are adding more restaurants around campus which I think is just a FABULOUS idea. In the Library, we have what is called a Grab n' go They have drinks, coffee, chocolate, Shipley's, etc.

    Dorm Life

UTPA has three Dorm complexes. Heritage- Most of the CAMP people stay here. It is not very nice, but if you have a roof to live under, take it. Unity Hall- The newest complex at UTPA. It is nice, they patio is a wonderful thing to just sit and relax with your friends. Troxel Hall- One of the oldest. It is attatched to Heritage, some say it's haunted by I just think it's old. All of the complexes have game rooms, They all have a TV room, Vending Machines, etc. The complexes have activities going on almost every week. Don't fail to attend! It's really fun. You DO have to have your guest turn in an ID before they can go into your room.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Don't be shy to ask questions! Asking questions is VERY important in College. 2. Be Active! Attend basketball games, volleyball games, and join an organization to keep you busy while having fun! 3. Balance your classes. Take some easy classes and some hard classes. Do not bombard yourself with hard classes in one semester. You won't enjoy it. 4. Enjoy College! 5. Get on top of your stuff. You are no longer in High School, your teachers will not tell you what you are missing and give you extra time to do it.

    In three sentences

UTPA is a LOVELY campus. It is not too big, not too small. The community is fabulous, there is always an activity going on and you never fail to meet some new friends. The professors definitely know how to make classes fun but at the same time they are ready to help you with struggles you may have. Academic Advisors are always available in the AAMC center to help you, just call in to set up an appointment first at (956) 655-7120 if they don't answer, keep calling. Chances are they are with another student.

Great for these types of students

Actually Panam is GREAT for any kind of student, it will offer activities and clubs in which any person going for any major and with any interests can go for. You'll never get bored at campus and like I said before there is always something going on, so this an active and very friendly university which will be perfect for anyone.

    Tips for prospective students

*Organize your time & money. Social activities are its best at college, but you also need to be careful on what and how often you spend your money, you want to be out of it before the end of the week. *Try to stay on track. Like I said before, social activities and sometimes just lazyness will approach your way, but your education is the thing that matters the most right now and its very easy to stay behind, try not to do so because it will bring its consequences, which can go from missing lessons or even dropping a class. *Be persistant. This is not a easy road, things will eventually get hard at some point or the other, but like a wise man said if you are going through hell, just keep walking. If you are persistant the outcome will be good, and if not then try again until you attain what you were hoping for, this will not be easy and there will be times where you think you just can't deal with it anymore, but its just a stage, you can do it.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive, but it also provides a lot of help. Most of the time it will be YOU the one that will need to organize the money and not precisely the college the one that alters its prizes. You get what you ask for, and it depends on you how you spend your money and to set your priorities from the beginning, its just a matter of organization.

    Am enjoying being here

Yes, campus is great. Everyday everybody seems to be in a great mood and always greeting you with a smile, there is also something going on on campus, whether if it is a fraternity or sorority activity or simple by other students organizations it always keeps the residents and students in general busy.

    Am learning a lot

I definitely am, this school has great professor, both strict and helpful. None of them will deny their time for the student and all of them are really opened to every possible way to help their students, as long as the student puts also the effort to progress.

Great for these types of students

Low income, Hispanic, parents, working adults, individuals who have never attended any other college and thus are unable to compare UTPA to anywhere else, and/or individuals who have relatively low expectations for their college career

    Tips for prospective students

If you are not from the Rio Grande Valley, I want to discourage you from attending this school. If you are looking for a college full of diverse individuals and cultures, do not come here. People told me I would hate it here, but I thought there was no way it could be THAAAT bad. Boy, was I wrong!

    Bang for the buck

The campus is very dirty. The science and education buildings are really only the decent buildings on campus. There really is no diversity here. You will learn about the culture that applies to the majority of the population in the area, but you will not become enlightened on many - if ANY - other cultures. Parking tickets are significantly cheaper than at other colleges, but you get what you pay for, and there is a good chance (especially during the fall semester) you will have to walk a few miles to class. This college does not have one single parking garage, ANYWHERE.

    Am enjoying being here

I am greatly disappointed with my college experience at this school.

    Am learning a lot

I have unquestionably learned more from extracurricular speakers/presentations/etc than I have in any of my classes. However, there are 2 exceptional female teachers in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Thank goodness for them.

Great for these types of students

This university is great for Hispanic students especially because the majority of the population here is Hispanic. But it is also great for anyone who wants to get a great quality education for a very low price.

    Tips for prospective students

Never be afraid to ask questions, and don't be intimidated by any professors. Attend your classes and you will most likely pass. If you have any questions besides academics, don't be afraid to ask your advisors nor departments heads because everyone is willing to help.

    Bang for the buck

This university is definitley worth every penny. It has very affordable high quality education, which is just a fraction of the price of many other universities throughout the nation. Many students may feel that they can't afford to go to a university, however, I highly recommend that they look into UTPA. The financial aid office is very helpful, and has many grants, loans, and scholarships that are very easy to apply for.

    Am enjoying being here

I do enjoy being here. They have many social events such as the tailgate parties before the basketball games, and many of the movie nights at the student union theater. Not to mention the barbeque's they have during the weekdays as well, and the yearly block party at the beginning of the year. All the events revolve around the student union which is basically the hang out for all the students here at UTPA.

    Am learning a lot

The academics here are great. All the courses are just as challenging as they would be in any other major university. Meeting with your professors is very easy, and the classes are relatively small. Tutoring is very easy to get and you will learn a great deal. Classes are very easy to pass as long as you do your assignments, and the teachers are very willing to help and teach there students to a great extent.

i really wont know what to say about buck i have only seen him a few times and just cause he is our mascot does not mean i have to love him but i like his enthusiasm and passion for the school.

    Am enjoying being here

the people and friends you meet her make the time ejoyable and the professers as well. actaully only some simply because the are easy to speak with and are there to help just like the counselors and advisers. there are facilities like the child development center that allow the students to get the fell of getting alone with student in a school like environment.

    Am learning a lot

the classes and professor are interesting, i learning something new everyday I'm not saying that its easy cause at times its not. yet I'm not going to give up now the hardest part is the first yr. and I've done good so far.

Great for these types of students

definitely people returning to school after an absence, parents, low income students, and students who can appreciate the college and the valley for what it does have to offer. Again, just make the most of your time here like anywhere else.

    Tips for prospective students

Make the most of your college experience and don't let people's bad experiences or moods ruin your excitement for coming here to college. I know a lot of people don't think that a degree from here is worth anything, but school is school, you just have to make sure that you are doing what you have to to really learn and do something meaningful with your degree. There isn't a whole lot to do in the valley, and that's because I've grown up here...but around campus if you find the right crowd, I'm sure you can find other ways to make staying here fulfilling.

    Bang for the buck

From what I've been told, I certainly hope so. Once classes start, I'm sure I'll understand this more. I will say though that all the help I've gotten with financial aid has been GREAT and it's definitely more affordable than other colleges.

    Will enjoy being here

Not to say that the campus isn't beautiful or that there aren't some cool things to do or people to spend time with...but my heart is in Austin and I'm biding my time until next year when I transfer. I've grown up in the valley, so I'll be in the same environment, just in a different place in my life.

    Will learn a lot

I've heard more on the good side of what to expect from the school from past and current students. It really is like any other college-you make the experience yourself. So if you keep up with classes and make an effort, you're sure to learn anything.

If you want to meet people from different places and different backgrounds, this would be a good school for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you register early and register for your classes as soon as possible, all the good classes fill up fast. Also look at the teachers you are choosing, try to find the good ones, there are a few rough teachers here.

    Bang for the buck

Great for these types of students

UTPA is great for first generation college students, non-traditional students, and students that have to work while attending school.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you buddy up with professors that are doing research/working on projects that interest you. I received a research assistant by doing this. Also, get involved with student organizations.

    Bang for the buck

UTPA is very affordable, but we don't receive all the perks that students might get at a school like UT-Austin or A&M.

    Am enjoying being here

Because UTPA is a commuter school, it is sometimes to difficult to feel like you are part of a community.

    Am learning a lot

The professors in my major department are very knowledgeable in their fields, and they are very effective in passing along their knowledge to their students. They are also great at finding learning opportunities for us outside of the classroom.

    Campus Safety

Safety is important here, and there's always rules and guidelines that aren't strictly reminded, but reasonably noted on a comfortably constant basis.

    Clubs and Activities

Clubs can get you involved well within your major, and will look great on your prospective resume.

    Bang for the buck

Great tuition price for the exact type of education you'd get in any other popular university.

    What to do for fun

There's plenty of open spaces with wonderful scenery within the campus. It's a very peaceful-looking environment and there's opportunity everywhere to join clubs in open activities or take a walk during the afternoon.

    Food and Dining

The unions can be quite busy during rush hour, but the place is kept clean by custodians 24/7 and the serving lines are fluid.

    Dorm Life

Off-campus housing just nearby the campus can be quite peaceful and solitary, although the dormitories which are just across campus can be filled with activities. That being said, there may be some nights with constant student participation and liveliness.

    Academic Rigor

A plentiful amount of professors are very friendly and tentative to your needs as a student looking to succeed in the campus. There's loads of motivation here to help you get through with your head help up high.

    Tips for prospective students

    Get involved in club activities.

    In three sentences

Very fluent in advising and registration. Clean and comfortable for all students to enjoy the area. Great professors that enjoy class participation.

    Clubs and Activities

I am currently the Lead Cartoonist for the Pan American News Paper and also an Animator for the Bronc TV and Productions.

Great for these types of students

all types of students are welcome, but if you are Caucasian expect to have a great time since the majorette is Hispanic and who doesn't love colored eyes.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year they host an HESTEC program that help students not only find jobs but learn about there heritage, not to mention the DISNEY program comes every year to recruit students.

    Bang for the buck

The reason why this school is so awesome is because of the grading system. Most if not all colleges have there grading systems with Plus and Minus base and at this college they don't follow that grading system so its a lot easier to get an A and wont mess up your GPA status.

    What to do for fun

There is lots to do for fun its really what your in to.

    Food and Dining

Recently installed a new food court with up to day restaurants and is really fun to eat in the cafe.

    Dorm Life

Although it may not be a large party school the dorm life is lots of fun and there are plenty of cats for you to pet.

    Academic Rigor

Having previously attended a college in Tempe Arizona I rate this university five stars due to how awesome it is to go there.

Great for these types of students

And theres a lot of things for the student to do on campus. There is a building called the Union, where a lot of students gather during thier break and play games or eat lunch and have fun.

    Tips for prospective students

There are many students willing to help with any question you have. The Lac is a great use of help with any course. The whole campus is a good source of place to use when you need computers or to print things.

    Am enjoying being here

Well, it's barely my first time being here away from my parents and it's better if you are here with a family member. But you will get use to the new life here at PANAM.

    Am learning a lot

It really depends on the professors you get in this college. Some are willing to stay after class and help; and others zoom through the material expecting you to already know the material. So, you have to learn or review you material for the course right when you get it so you can be prepared for you course. Also, if you have trouble in the class or with the course there is an on campus tutoring building that can help you with your course. It is called LAC: which are current students in the college that already had that course. And More than willing to help others, as well some teachers give the LAC the old exams to practice on. So it's a good deal of help. And the library have study rooms that you can work in. And the campus is full of computers.

The professors are understandable and go into detail to where we understand what we're leaning. The faculty staff are friendly and helpful. If any student has a problem or needs help looking for a building, they stop what they're doing and guide them. The students are well-going. You can make friends with anyone here. The wellness center is new and do lots of things in there. Working on your fitness shouldn't be a problem. Everything you need, is on campus.

Great for everyone! We don't judge, we don't stereotype, we don't do anything except accept people. (: Because we don't see white, brown, yellow, or black, we just see Broncs. Be a Bronc! I am.

    Tips for prospective students

The only tip I can offer is get you a** here and enroll, it'll be the best decision you've made. Why haven't you come to check it out yet?! >:)

    Bang for the buck

Lets just say I didnt think college would be in my future, but UTPA has completely changed that perspective for me. This place is completely affordable, and worth every dollar spent. You not only get what you paid for, but you get a little extra as well. Everything is so beautiful, we great dormatories and friendly suite mates. Not to mention the food is definitely worth the tuition. :P Come where your dollar stretches the full way. I know mine did.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being here because not only are the students nice, but the staff is too, as well as helpful. You never have to be afraid to ask questions thinking you won't get an answer, because everyone just wants to help you succeed. So if you are the type of person whos' shy and afraid to get out there, this school is definitely right for you. I say this because I use to be afraid to ask questions, and now its just like talking to my momma. Come join the UTPA community, where you can be accepted and truely be apart of a family. (:

    Am learning a lot

This school is amazing because it isn't as hard as it seems to be. Just put in ten minutes a day studying each subject and reviewing notes. If you're doing this there's no way you will not pass with more than exceptional scores. The instructors are amazingly helpful, the classes are pretty much all enjoyable, with an exception of a few, and the tutoring centers are more than accomadating. I didn't have any trouble getting in here, and if you like to learn too much, but not too little, this is the school for you. Come get accepted. (:

Great for these types of students

Students who want to live at home and commute, local students, those who wish to finish their career fast, students looking to staying in the RGV, students who love working out and being physically fit, students who want to keep in touch with their high school friends, etc.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to do your FAFSA! Also, since the parking here is pretty bad, make sure to always have your permit on your car! My car got towed once for parking in a neighborhood and I had to travel two towns and pay $140 to get it back. The UTPA police is very strict and sometimes exaggerated with parking fines as well. I got a $25 parking ticket for facing traffic in the parking lot, and I had never heard of nor seen anyone getting a fine for this! Also, make sure to buy or rent your textbooks from other places, since the bookstore is overpriced (like in any other school). Also, the food here is overpriced, so get a meal plan (for the buffet, which is good), or bring your own lunch from home.

    Bang for the buck

I must say that the rec center here is amazing and one of the best I've seen at any college or university. This University is definitively a cheap place to go, and the education is good enough for the price. It could do better in some departments, but it is definitively a value school I got a lot of financial aid from this place!

    Did enjoy being here

I enjoyed my experience at this school, although it is a mostly-commuter school. This makes the student life a little bit dead and inactive. This and the rest of my review is why I ended up transferring, as this school seemed just too boring to me. Some of the clubs are very active, while a lot of others are just written on paper but do not actually meet often. I can see the University improving in this, although I know it might take it a few more years. The students in the dorms or nearby apartments seemed to be the ones enjoying their stay the most. They also seemed to be the most active in organizations. There is diversity regarding the student body, but most students do not really get to make as many friends due to just being on campus for a few hours. Also, being a local school, most of the people who attend are from the area. I ran into and had classes with a lot of the same people I saw in high school, so I felt like I wasn't really making new friends. A lot of the students seem to act or think the same, this being in a mildly conservative way. Even though I got bored of being at this university, it is definitively an experience I will remember. I feel like if I hadn't gone here for at least a year, I would have been left wondering what most of my ex-classmates from high school experienced in their first year. Another thing is that because a lot of students here are conservative and/or Catholic, there is the general taboo of LGBT students on campus. Some of the posters for our organization got taken down, but that's the RGV for you.

    Did learn a lot

Some of the professors are wonderful and approachable, as well as diverse. I honestly feel like I did not learn as much as I would have in another university though. This is mainly due to the fact that many of the students do not participate due to lack of interest, making it hard for the professors to engage in interesting discussions. Although I finished my basics here, ,I feel like I was robbed some of the education I could have gotten somewhere else.

    Campus Safety

This is an area of campus that could use some improvement. While I've personally never felt very unsafe, it's true that we could use some better lighting in certain parts of the school. Campus security also is very focused on giving out parking tickets rather than putting their time towards something more important.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a huge variety of clubs and activities on campus; it's really easy to find one that you'll like. On any given day, you'll see clubs and organizations selling food or doing fun activities on campus. It's great. Plus, if you can't find one that you think suits you, you're always welcome to make your own.

Great for these types of students

Honestly, it's great for any and all types of students. There are professors, classes, activities, sports, and organizations for any type of student, you just have to find the ones that suit you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have this great science fair in the fall called HESTEC. It's a week long event where various people from the science field come and make presentations, speeches, and many other things. Student organizations are also allowed to open several booths - from food to face painting to hula hooping. It's a really cool thing to be a part of.

    Bang for the buck

I definitely think that, all things considered, you get way more bang for your buck than you do in other universities. We may not be as prestigious, but we offer very similar opportunities for way less money.

    What to do for fun

There are so many things to do. The university constantly has concerts, plays, movie showings, and speakers, among other things, and the best part is that they're all free! This past year alone, I've had the privilege of seeing Bill Nye the Science Guy, Clay Walker, Larry King, and Maya Angelou.

    Food and Dining

The food at UTPA is probably one of the things that needs the most change. While there are a few places on campus to get food from, it's not incredibly varied and is oftentimes pretty pricey. We are currently getting three new places to eat, though, so hopefully that will make a difference for the better.

    Dorm Life

I don't personally live in the dorms, but, from what I've heard, they're pretty good.

    Academic Rigor

It's pretty varied, mostly depending on the professor, although it tends to lean a little more towards the easier side of the spectrum, from my experience. As with many universities, though, the tougher professors tend to be the ones you learn and gain the most from.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely try to get involved in activities because they'll make your experience all the more fun and worthwhile. I've met so many great people here, which wouldn't have happened if I hadn't taken advantage of the opportunities available. You can accomplish a lot, all you have to do is put forth a little effort.

    In three sentences

Overall, it's a great campus to be a part of. UTPA has plenty of knowledgeable, enthusiastic professors that make learning interesting, as well as a variety of opportunities for students to have fun and socialize. What you get out of your experience here really depends on you and what you're willing to put into it.

If anything happens the school immediately notifies its students whether it be by email or alert text messages, but nothing really happens.

    What to do for fun

Go outside and look at all the banners and flyers posted. There's always something going on. There's movie nights at the student union, fitness challenges, plays, and other performances throughout the year as well.

    Food and Dining

The food is great and always fresh.

    Dorm Life

    I wouldn't know.

    Academic Rigor

It all depends on what classes you take. The ones I've taken so far are pretty interesting and the work isn't too hard, but again, it depends on what classes you take.

    Tips for prospective students

Everything is easy to find but don't be afraid to ask questions if you need help. The food on campus is great but there's a lot of stores and fast food places around if you want something else.

    In three sentences

You won't get lost on campus and the people there are quite friendly. There's always some sort of event going on, like seminars on the issue of drinking and driving, or organizations raising awareness. There's a lot of student organizations to join, classes are great, and if you need extra help there's always someone willing to help.

    Campus Safety

The alerts for crime and safety are very prompt and sent via text in more serious instances.

    Bang for the buck

For a self funded student, I may be biased on this. It is a lot cheaper for tuition than other universities but all the fees can add up even if you don't use the services once during the semester.

    What to do for fun

If clubs galore is not enough for you, there is a wellness and recreation center that has a ton of free classes in Zumba, Spin, etc., in addition to a pool and the variety of gym equipment. They also have a gaming room where they hold competitions regularly.

    Food and Dining

I have not purchased food from campus as it is a bit over priced I assume for convenience. It may be worth the few extra dollars to some since leaving campus risks losing the awesome parking space scored early in the morning plus the cost of gas. There are several food places with a variety of foods on campus. They also offer a meal plan for the semesters. On a side note, they always make the halls smell delicious.

    Dorm Life

I cannot rate this appropriately as I live off campus. They are however VERY conveniently located on campus and have great parking locations.

    Academic Rigor

The professors do not overload their students, but they do expect them to dedicate their time to their class and at home study and work to succeed in their classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Be serious about your studies and dedicate your time appropriately for the courses you are taking. If you apply yourself and listen closely to the professor and their advice, you will absorb so much knowledge and succeed greatly.

    In three sentences

UTPA has a large sprawling campus that has a lot to offer in terms of classes and services, including medical and psychiatric clinics and a very large Wellness/Recreation center. The teachers I have taken have all been great and some treat you like a strict yet caring parent meaning you'll feel like you still have family around even if you're far from home. In all, this college is a great choice for it's faculty, staff, services, and beauty.

    What to do for fun

There is plenty to do for fun in Edinburg. Joining a sorority/fraternity is an excellent example. There is an abundant number of clubs and other fun things to join there at UTPA.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria food was not your typical high school cafeteria food. The people that worked there were extremely friendly and talkative. UTPA probably has one of the best food and dining services.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the unity dorm for my first year of college. I liked it because for one, you get the chance of meeting new people and you get to live within doors/floors away from them. Another advantage to this was if you wanted to study with someone, they were pretty much right next door.

    Academic Rigor

Some professor really go into detail with their classes but other are laid back. I was fortunate enough to have a couple of awesome professors that actually cared about their students and if they learned or not. Academic is a big factor in every school's performance.

    Tips for prospective students

My number one advice to give to new students that just got out of high school and are going into college is that high school they babied you. It's true what people say about college. You need to grow up and start looking after yourself, either you study and work your butt off or you're just going to mess up.

    In three sentences

The University of Texas-Pan American is looked at as another community college, but honestly, it's an amazing school. I went there this past fall and spring semester and I really enjoyed my experience there. This school seems to be growing not only academically but in size as well.

For fun I enjoyed going to the Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex. (Rec as most of us called it) I also enjoyed hanging out with friends at the Student Union watching TV or in the game room, or just sitting around talking.

    Food and Dining

The food here is near the best! Do not have to go far for a good meal, well worth the price. The various options allow you to eat something new everyday!

    Dorm Life

I did not stay at the dorms this past year, I commute daily from home.

    Academic Rigor

The courses offered are like any other college courses, they do not overwhelm you if you don't let them, but they do challenge you to learn more on your own and pay more attention in class.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not spread your schedule out too far. Give yourself time to study or work on assignments. Have fun.

    Academic Rigor

Academically is easy if you do the work instead of partying. We have a learning center which is there if a tutor is needed on any course and there is a writing center for any type of essay editing.

    Tips for prospective students

Research the career path that is wanted and search all the courses needed to graduate carefully. Do your homework on this or you will be lost and taking extra courses not needed.

    In three sentences

From a 1 to 10 scale, I would rate this University a 7. It is not hard to enter here but it is a little harder to maintain the grades to be in good or excellent academic standing. Graduation rating is about a 67% which is not very high in my opinion. Registration for courses is easy but advisement is dificult and confusing.

    Campus Safety

It's generally safe on campus since there are patrol men on their segways or driving around campus. There is plenty of lighting during the evenings and emergency posts that have a phone/panic button stationed throughout campus and parking lots. Rarely have there been incidents, but any campus is not perfect.

    Greek Life

There were many students that I knew who were in a Greek sorority/fraternity, and were always outgoing and nice. They always had some kind of events going on.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs and activities such as graphic design clubs, anime clubs, greek sororities/fraternities, sports clubs to name a few.

Great for these types of students

Art students will love the fact that you can paint, draw, or sketch outside. When I go to class, I saw a lot of art students drawing building using perspective lines. It's a great way to get out and stretch your legs than being cooped up.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a large grassy area called the Quad that holds many events that require space. Sometimes it's used for an exhibition, other times used for small concerts.

    Bang for the buck

Go to UTPA festivals or events such as concerts, museum exhibitions, guest speakers, plays, or FESTIBA. They're free for students and the public. Events such as these are fun and educational.

    What to do for fun

There is a new student recreational building added at campus that has rock-climbing, gym, yoga, and many more. It's a great place to go if you're stressed.

    Food and Dining

There is a cafeteria, a dining hall, and several outlets scattered throughout campus which is fine. Also, there are several restaurants located near campus. The only problem is that if you leave your parking space for lunch and then come back, you may not have a parking space. Stick with the campus food if you have afternoon classes.

    Dorm Life

I don't have an opinion on this since I haven't been in a dorm,so I'll give it an average rating.

    Academic Rigor

I did feel like I was lacking something important in some classes from the start. Overtime I realized that some teaching methods weren't very helpful and came across confusing. They expected you to know stuff already, but sometimes we were taught differently from other schools.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early just in case there are problems ahead. Lines will be longer the more you wait, and more frustrating.

    In three sentences

The University of Texas-Pan American is a campus that I've been attending since 2005 and now going for my masters. The faculty are very helpful and do their best to help make my time here effortless. However, the paperwork to apply for admission has been total confusion from the start and I felt that I was getting nowhere for quite some time.

I would have to advise all students to not shop at the University Bookstore. It is was overpriced and they don't always have what you need. You're better off going to walmart across the street.

    What to do for fun

There are many organizations on campus as well as off that hold activities weekly for students.

    Food and Dining

The best food selection I've seen at a University ever! They have a cafeteria where students can eat as well as the student union. Another thing that I thought was awesome it that there are Starbucks stands throughout the campus.

    Dorm Life

I don't live on campus but I can tell you that there are plenty of apartments close by within a reasonable price range.

    Academic Rigor

The course work is more challenging compared to a Community College in that there is more reading and the professors expect you to already have prior knowledge.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know your professors and download the UTPA app for android or iPhone. It has an interactive map that helps you get to where you need to go.

    In three sentences

UTPA is your home away from home. It's the kind of campus where you can shorts year round; with some of the nicest professors I've ever met. The faculty there has so much to offer the student just has to be willing.

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in the dorms before, but I will be staying in the apartments on campus this year. From what I've been told, the apartments are much quieter than the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

I've only ever taken two classes with them in a previous year, but my professors were very understanding and helpful when I was confused about something in class.

    Tips for prospective students

A bicycle can be your best friend on campus, but always keep a sharp eye on vehicle drivers. They tend to pay little attention to bicyclists, unfortunately.

    In three sentences

The campus is located smack dab in the center of town, so access to local stores and restaurants is ideal. The campus seems large at first, but each department is actually closely connected with their students. Housing near campus is affordable and ideal for this region, so having a place to stay near campus is great!

There has been many opening of food stands of major restaurant chains.

    Dorm Life

I have never resided in a dorm, but I have heard they are clean and in good shape since some dorms are barely new.

    Tips for prospective students

My major tip for a prospective student is to try to keep a good GPA in the beginning. Since at the beginning the courses are mainly basic courses, students usually do not put the same effort as their career courses, but your GPA really matters when it comes to scholarships, grants, and honor societies. Another recommendation would be to get involve in organizations and societies, not only for your resume but to interact with other students not in your field, and you learn from so many experiences you overcome.

    In three sentences

This university gives students an advantage of getting to know your professor, since it doesn't have that many students. I would give it an 8 out of 10 score. Also the students get to interact more and get to know each other, since the classes are not large in size.

The campus is pretty safe. I have left my guitar, and backpack in hallways before without anything going missing. The only thing that you have to be careful with is politics and racism. I have had a few death threats from a professor who asked me who I was voting for in the presidential election. A friend of mine, who was an adjunct professor, had some phone calls of death threats for the same reason. I have another friend who is a minority. She was forced to leave her class on it's first day because the professor did not like her race.

I myself am part of the Gamers Club and, even though we all have a common interest in gaming, most of us also enjoy comic books and anime and the like. It's really easy to make friends when you've got stuff in common, so clubs are a total must!

    Food and Dining

    Clubs and Activities

UTPA is one of the most affordable universities in the nation and you get a great university experience from it. It's all right here. Your tuition will cover your classes, rec center, and give you access to student health center. It also covers a lot of other resources you will discover, take advantage of all of them.

    What to do for fun

First you should participate in school activities, different organizations and departments have events almost every week. From art exhibits to movie screenings, and more. The university also hosts difference conferences and community events throughout the semester. There are parties all around on the weekends. You can go to downtown McAllen or other night spots to dance or have some drinks with friends. There are several movie theaters around the area including the new Cinemark Bistro where you can eat food and drink beer while you watch a movie! There are also nature parks and bike trails for the out goers. The whole Rio Grande Valley is your backyard, the different cities around have different museums and attractions to see. Go to the beach less than 2 hours away (a hot spot during spring break). The public transportation in the RGV is not the best, so it is a lot more convenient to have your own vehicle.

    Food and Dining

The university has a Student Union which has several fast food places and there is also a University Cafeteria. The Student Union has a starbucks, chinese, mexican, pizza, and a chik-fil-a. You will find the union filled with students during lunch hour. The University Cafeteria lunch cost about $9. There are dining plans for residents and commuters which are more economical. Visit the website for more info: utpadining.com. The cafeteria is like a buffet with several options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Both are vegetarian friendly, it is more difficult for vegans bur manageable.

    Academic Rigor

There will be some classes that will be easy mostly the lower level courses. As you get to your Junior and Senior level your classes will become more challenging and require more work. If you are organized and are good with deadline you will do good. If you are not good with either, college will be an opportunity to become better at both skills.

    Tips for prospective students

I really suggest you step out of you comfort zone and join organizations and become active on campus. It is your involvement that will dictate your university experience. Being involved will make it easier to make new friends and grow your network. Talk to your teachers and seek help if you are having trouble in a class.

A lot of fraternities and sororities available, from what I've seen.

    Clubs and Activities

There are numerous clubs and organizations to further your career, expand your knowledge, or to just have a lot of fun.

Great for these types of students

Those looking for a great college education but don't want to pay obscene amounts of money for one. Plus, since it's in south Texas, there's never a shortage of great Mexican restaurants.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There's a really cool sundial near the engineering building, and the library has everything you could need.

    Bang for the buck

You're getting a great college education, as good as any other of those bigger schools, for a small fraction of the cost. You have no reason not to go here.

    What to do for fun

There are several clubs and organizations you can join on campus that offer something you're interested in. There are also guest speakers appearing on campus some days, a game room with pool tables and several tvs and video games, they screen movies on campus for free sometimes, and there's various musical performances going on a lot of the time around campus.

    Food and Dining

The student union building has a chick-fil-a, a Chinese restaurant, an Italian restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, and a couple other places for food. From what I've eaten, it's honestly all really good. The Jazzman's, a coffee store in the library, is amazing, and we also have a starbucks on campus.

    Dorm Life

I wouldn't know, I do not live on campus.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the classes you take and the professors you get, any college can be hell or simply amazing. From my experiences, it mostly depends on your professor. Some professors are really cool and lenient attendance -wise, basically if you don't show up, it's your problem, but some do count it, and the work can be a lot, just like any other school, you just have to divide and conquer.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early and make sure you get everything done on time. Although it does have a high acceptance rate, nothing is certain, so you need to make sure you finish what you need to and attend what you need to attend.

    In three sentences

UTPA is a really nice school. The faculty and staff and really cool, nice, and caring, and they help you with whatever it is you need help with. The campus is actually really nice, as well, and the professors are phenomenal.

If you are going into nursing, the classes are really fun. However, they are challenging and many should try to aim to get all A's because the nursing program is very competitive. Many classes do present a challenge but you will be fine as long as you make study time and email your professor for any questions on any assignment you may have.

    Tips for prospective students

All individuals that attend UTPA are very friendly and very helpful; ask any questions you may have and they will surely help you out! You have to study. UTPA is a small school, but does not mean it's like high school. It is easy to pass the classes as long as you do you work, but really take time to study.

    Tips for prospective students

Parking is a bad. If you can invest in a bike that would be helpful at least during your first year.

We have excellent campus security. They are always around and if not, then just a phone call away. They help you get to your car if it's too late in the evening, they help change your tire, basically they are there if you need them. We also have a great emergency alert system, they send out text alerts, email alerts and they even call you if there is any danger or threat on campus.

    Greek Life

Our Greek Life is very different, since we're a small campus, we don't have Greek houses. But I think you get the same experience you get in most major universities. The Greeks here are a lot more friendly...but then again, I'm biased.

    Clubs and Activities

We have so many clubs. I think there is one for almost everything, and if there isn't you can start one, no problemo!

Great for these types of students

    Dorm Life

I lived off campus so I'm not the best person for this. But, I know a whole bunch of my friends loved living on campus. They have a couple of dorm and our building a bunch of new ones.

    Academic Rigor

This honestly depends on your major and the professors you take. First year classes are easy and give you enough time to settle in to college life and enjoy your newfound freedom. However, second year gets a little tough. There are plenty of resources on campus to help you academically so make use of them! I survived Calculus because of my learning center tutor.

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to upper classmen about professors and buy books online. The bookstore really likes your $$$ Most student live off campus, the apartments and houses are very cheap. They do have some dorms and are building new ones but I think off campus housing is much cheaper. Parking is an absolute nightmare!! This might be one reason to consider living on campus. I would pay extra to avoid parking, seriously.

Great Location : Edinburg is not too big nor too small, it's the perfect size to have an enjoyable college experience and at the same time it doesn't distract you from your studies. Also, the beach is like 1 hour away (yay Spring break!) Balanced Student to Professor Ratio: Since it is a small school, it makes the learning environment much more intimate. I like to go to the gym and hang out with friends. I admit that while there is a bit to do here, it can get boring if you are the kind of person that just doesn't want to sit around doing the same thing over and over again.

    Food and Dining

I like the food but at times I feel it can be a bit better priced and give a bit more variety.

    Dorm Life

I can't really say on the dorm life since I have never lived on campus.

    Academic Rigor

At least for the computer science dept, you are expected to learn what they give you and that is not an easy task. It may seem like they are being very tough but that is only because they want you to be able to learn the material and walk away accomplished.

    Tips for prospective students

I think that if you are looking into coming to the college, you should consider this. Make sure you know what you are looking for. You don't want to come in not knowing what you want to do with your life. You have a very short time here and you will miss it when it just passes you by and you don't do much with it. You will make friends here and that will help you greatly. You can ask them to do activities with you and help you out and that will help you when it comes down to tests and homework. Always ask about things here so you know what is going on since the school offers many resources and they are always ready to help you.

    In three sentences

I think UTPA is a great school for all that want to try and get an education here. It offers a pretty diverse and interesting amount of choices from medical, computer, to psychology and math. It has it's ups and downs but I think that mostly, the college is worth going to since they are always trying to help you out and the professors really know how to teach you the subject. You don't just walk away not learning anything, you walk away, having bettered yourself and more prepared for the outside world.
