    Tips for prospective students

Since UTEP is similar to a commuter college, I recommend that students try their best to meet students studying for a degree similar to their own. Don't be shy to meet new people, and bring up the idea of studying a few times a week with students who are taking the same courses as yourself. It is a great way to study course material and just as great a way to develop long-lasting friendships.

    Bang for the buck

The price for being a student at UTEP is incredibly small when compared to other more prominent and well-known universities, especially when considering that the education one can recieve at UTEP is just as good as that of other universities. For example, on average, one semester for a full-time undergraduate student can cost merely around $3,500 for tuition alone.

    Am enjoying being here

UTEP is a very enjoyable place to continue one's quest for a higher education and achieve the degree one is looking for, whether it is a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, a doctorate, or the requirements to enter medical school are to be fulfilled. The school is beautiful and the student environment is one that anyone can easily feel at home with. The only downside to the environment present at UTEP is that the university is somewhat of a commuter college, meaning that most of the students do not live on campus, rather they live in the city and also work part-time (sometimes even full-time!) while going to school. As opposed to a traditional college in which most of the students live on campus, it may be more difficult to associate with students who are attempting to reach a degree like oneself. It may also be especially difficult when attempting to get several students to meet for a group-study session, since many are busy with more than just school.

    Am learning a lot

Classes are enjoyable, challenging, and most teachers do a great job in keeping the class interested in course material.

Great for these types of students

It's great for anyone, really. It's a well rounded college that will satisfy the needs of your specific character. The classes are good learning-wise. It depends on your major. The Engineering program is supposed to be one of the best, and the Music Program (from my perspective) is pretty good. The Music Department is growing more and more. Just search up your major, and see if UTEP has the best to offer for it. :)

    Tips for prospective students

Have fun, and enjoy it. UTEP is great for learning, and connecting to those around you.

    Bang for the buck

UTEP isn't incredibly expensive. I haven't had a problem covering the expenses. I had a grant for 1000 and a loan, and I was covered. The Food Courts are expensive to me, though. I prefer eating out of campus. There's some cool restaurants around UTEP.

    Am enjoying being here

Campus life is packed with activities. There are many clubs and events to go to, so it's hard to be bored. Since the community of students isn't that huge, you will be able to meet and connect to many people. I'm a music major, and I've met sooo many students who are majoring in music. There's also a good range of ethnicity here, so you'll meet lots of different people. It's fun that way. Whatever your major is, you'll most likely meet many of those who have the same major as you, and those who don't. Even if El Paso is a small town, there's always something to do, even if it's hanging out at a cool coffee shop, checking out downtown, cheering for the Miners at the Sun Bowl, or going to a concert. :)

    Am learning a lot

For the time that I've spent here (2 semesters), every professor that I've had has a different approach to teaching in their own way, making each class that I've taken stimulate the mind and be interesting. There are some professors here that I've heard of who didn't quite please the students, but if there are any unsatisfying professors here, you will most likely hear of them, since the student community is quite close. Classes also vary in size. Some classes may fit up to 200 people, while others only have 30 students as the maximum capacity. UTEP also offers certain applications that other colleges may offer, like WebCT, which is a website in which you can communicate with the students in your class, email your professor, and turn in or receive assignments. No matter what the size of your class is, you will be able to connect to your professor through WebCt. The library is a decent size, and also has programs/sources that help when you are studying, like the Writing Center. In reality, you have all the sources here available to you for study. All you need is a study group, and you're set! Study groups may be a bit hard to organize because a huge amount of students here work while being a full time student. However, thanks to WebCt and peer advisors from my classes, Study sessions were organized, and a study group was even created online through WebCt.

Great for these types of students

I say just go for it. University of Texas at El Paso is not a horrible university. It is one of the best in engineering and much more. What's the harm in trying it out.

    Tips for prospective students

The University of Texas at El Paso is an excellent school. The campus is big so use all the resources available to you, because you are probably being charged for them in the tuition. So just go for it and branch out.

    Bang for the buck

The College of Health Science has an excellent program for Kinesiology, Social Work, Nursing, and many more. I am a social work major so the schedule is rigorous and very time consuming, but it is worth every minute of my time. These courses challenge one’s intellect and help with the career one plans to pursue. You really don't want to fail any of your classes, because you are the one paying for the opportunity to have a chance at a career.

    Am enjoying being here

I really do like being at the University of Texas at El Paso. It has many different aspects to it that is really interesting. It really is diverse here and beautiful. You get a chance to meet many different types of people here. The teachers are really interesting especially with the different experiences they provide for each different type of field. The campus is really huge and beautiful. The many different colleges that are here really give a wide variety of the different types of fields and the many different types of jobs you can have in a certain field. The College of Health Science has an excellent program for Kinesiology, Social Work, Nursing, and many more. I am a social work major so the schedule is rigorous and very time consuming, but it is worth every minute of my time. Here at UTEP the teachers are somewhat helpful, the tutoring center is even more helpful, and there are many resources at the students disposal to use whenever needed.

Great for these types of students

This is a University in a border city, so its great for hispanics!

    Tips for prospective students

Preferably to be bilingual and multicultural since the majority here come from a mexican american background

    Bang for the buck

The education is inexpensive and it is quality learning

    Am enjoying being here

The class structure and the way of teaching is not all that complete but it is decent.

    Am learning a lot

It depends on the way a teacher shows there class, some teacher can just leave it up to you to read the book and expect you to learn.

    Bang for the buck

Though it is still pricey for me tuition rates are not nearly as high as other colleges offering the same degree. I've known past friends who now have good jobs such as Texas Instruments and are getting paid the same amount as those who attended top/expensive schools. UTEP offers good quality for a lesser price.

    Will enjoy being here

The ambient is great. It is full of friendly people. Everywhere i turn im greeted with a warm smile. It has a lot of resources available for the students plus there's a new big gym about to be opened and available for FREE to all students.

    Will learn a lot

I was mentored by one of the students there for an electrical engineering program and I learned a lot from the students there who had the opportunity to learn from amazingly great professors. I have a good feeling i will too learn a lot as they did if not more!

Great for these types of students

Since UTEP is adding new undergraduate and graduate courses and majors pretty much every year, UTEP is great for almost any aspiring student. UTEP has some of the best programs and is constantly growing.

    Tips for prospective students

College is the time to prepare for your career and to forge lasting friendships. Study, but make sure to get out once in a while. UTEP has many opportunities for both study and fun, so make sure to take advantage of them. Try not to stress out too much.

    Bang for the buck

For a tier two university with division one athletics, the price of tuition is actually quite low. The education received at UTEP is easily as good as what you would receive at other well-known universities so the tuition price is quite a steal.

    Am enjoying being here

The atmosphere of UTEP is very non-threatening, peaceful and beautiful which then tends to rub off on the students. The students are very friendly and welcoming which makes UTEP feel like home. However, UTEP is a commuter school and is undergoing plenty of construction at the moment which complicates things a little bit. Many people will seem busy but try and reach out to make friends. You won't regret it.

    Am learning a lot

Most of the professors have previous experience in the subject matter they are teaching and can offer a lot of insight into the application of said subject matter. The professors also tend to have a bit of a sense of humor which is always nice.

    Tips for prospective students

Interview your future professors, avoid the Power point professors.

    Bang for the buck

I'm still trying to pay my tuition even when I'm not a student here anymore. It feels like it is the Bank of America of schools, $15 fines here and there.

    Did enjoy being here

If they would actually helped, it would have been enjoyable.

    Did learn a lot

Second time now, I came back to UTEP thinking that my Freshmen year was just bad timing. But all is the same, tired of Power Point Professors that use another person's slides to teach and don't even have the will to correct the errors in the slides. Now I will transfer to another college, for those who have evaded these type of professor, I envy you, because I got the majority of them and brought disillusion to the university.

    Campus Safety

There is always campus security present and the campus alert system is routinely tested. I don't recall hearing about any major incidents on campus in the two years I have attended.

    Greek Life

There are numerous associations on campus. You have your pick!

    Clubs and Activities

With the various student organizations, fraternities and sororities on campus, there is always an event taking place on campus. There's also food and blood drives, career fairs and of course, plenty of athletic events!!

Great for these types of students

UTEP is perfect for students who would like to experience different cultures along with their academics. The beautiful Franklin Mountains are in close proximity for those who enjoy nature and hikes. You can also enjoy your activities without the hustle and bustle feel of bigger cities.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year we have Minerpalooza which is a huge celebration on campus to kick off our football season. It's a kind of street fair/pep rally mix that is open to the public. During football season there are also tailgate parties for each home game.

    What to do for fun

El Paso is home to the gorgeous Franklin Mountains National Park where you can enjoy the aerial tramway. There are also a couple of casinos, fine dining and a very active night life! For those who would like a little more cultural diversity, we are right on the border with Mexico so you can enjoy a little shopping and lunch in a foreign country and be back home in time for dinner.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of restaurants in the area ranging from fast food such as Mickey D's and Burger King to Mexican cuisine, Sushi, Teppan style meals and my personal favorite: Bronx style deli Chubby's, where the sandwiches are bigger than your face!

    Dorm Life

I have never lived in the dorms, so unfortunately I'm not able to give a first-hand account of dorm life. Sorry!

    Academic Rigor

UTEP has outstanding programs. All the courses I have taken were designed to challenge students' points of view and encourage critical thinking. The courses do require a commitment and strive for excellence on the student's part.

    Tips for prospective students

Do your research. Find out if your major is offered at the university. If you have trouble locating the information, call the university for assistance and make note of how helpful the staff was, how easy/difficult it was to obtain information. Also, look up information on the city such as public transportation in case you need it, average housing cost and types of entertainment. All this should help you decide if UTEP is the place for you.

    In three sentences

UTEP is culturally diverse and has many student organizations on campus. Faculty is very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The university is big enough to offer numerous majors but not too big where an individual student gets lost amongst the masses.

I am a music major, and UTEP has an EXCELLENT music program! All the faculty are world-class musicians (one instructor was a member of the President's Own Marine band before taking a job here). The coursework is extremely intense, but I have learned so much! I feel that my time here at UTEP has prepared me well to be a professional musician.

The campus is quite safe. I haven't heard of anything unusual happening and I frequently see campus police walking around.

    What to do for fun

Go to football games and participate in school events.

    Food and Dining

Though the food is good it bothers me that they don't have a main cafeteria. It's mostly just shops and stuff.

    Dorm Life

Though I don't live in the dorms I know people that do and they seem to enjoy it.

    Academic Rigor

Though UTEP is serious about their students' education I believe that a few of the teachers could take things a little more seriously.

    Tips for prospective students

The internet at the library is a bit slow so don't be surprised if it takes you forever to get online there.

    In three sentences

The environment at this university is quite relaxing, though it feels like a college campus it also feels like a place you can easily fit in since the people there are so diverse. It's amazing how the school keeps growing and making adjustments to the campus so everything looks nicer and more professional. All of the teachers that I've had have not been disappointing, all in all it's a pretty decent school.

    Campus Safety

if you're smart, the campus can be really safe. there are break-ins that occur at the dorms (but that's because people leave their doors unlocked). if it's late and you feel unsafe walking to your car/dorm alone, you can call campus police and they will escort you.

    Greek Life

greek life is really not big on this campus.

    Clubs and Activities

there are lots of clubs to join and lots of activities to do around campus - you just might have to go looking for the right club join or activity to do.

Great for these types of students

for science majors, they allow undergraduates to join research laboratories. it's nice, you get to learn techniques with hands-on experience, and there's the possibility for publication.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

there are always events going on during the year. during the fall semester we have miner palooza, which is a huge party the university hosts and something like twenty thousand people show up to. at the dorms there are always events being held, like this wednesday the dorms is hosting kick axe which is an event to teach defensive fighting techniques. usually free food is provided!

    Bang for the buck

i'm assuming bang for the buck means getting a good deal for the money you fork over. things are relatively cheap here. i think the movies are more expensive than many big cities though (that's probably because the movies is the only form of entertainment here). food is cheaper, gas is cheaper, that's a plus.

    What to do for fun

it's el paso, tx. there is nothing to do for fun!!! unless you like going to the movies, there's really nothing to do. ice skating is a seasonal thing, it's too windy in the spring to do anything outside during that time of year, it's too hot to do anything outside during the summer, and there's nothing else to do in between.

    Food and Dining

the food at the union (the place where you buy food) is absolutely disgusting. you're basically given four choices: squishy chinese food, greasy pizza, over-cook chicken nuggets and fries, or dry mexican food. i heard they are changing the menu though, we'll see...

    Dorm Life

it seems every night i'm kept up until one or two in the morning because the people below me love to blast their music and the people above me love to stomp around and no matter how much you complain no one does anything about it. additionally, my roommate is not my favorite person in the world. you do a short survey to see if you're compatible with anyone and they do not do a very good job with pairing people up to room together (either that or people lie on their survey's).

    Academic Rigor

it depends on your major. some majors are significantly harder than others. the academic rigor also varies greatly from professor to professor - don't take the easy way out, you'll learn more if you go with a harder professor.

    Tips for prospective students

as with any university, read at least the first three chapters of your text books before the first day of class. think about what you want to do for the rest of your life so you don't waste your time taking a bunch of classes you don't need.

    In three sentences

i wish they would offer more classes for my major, along with offer more classes per semester. the professors are very nice and are interested in helping students succeed. it's windy in the spring, but the weather is nice in the fall.

it is excellent. el paso was ranked #2 or #3 in the nation as one of the most safe cities in the u.s. since utep is in el paso, it is also very safe even when you are here at night. there are almost no crimes if hardly any reported in the university and in el paso.

    Greek Life

i never participated in the greek life. i know there are greek clubs in the university but i never had the chance to participate in any of them.

    Clubs and Activities

there are lots of activities throughout the semester. one of them is an activity that lots of people from different cultures gather in one of the university parks and sell their typical foods of their countries and their drinks. it is a great opportunity to get to know other cultures. this just one not to mention all of the other activities that happen around campus.

Great for these types of students

it is great for all types of students as we do see a lot of hispanics, indian, oriental, american, african american students,, making the university a diverse place in culture.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

the campus' structure is bhutanese. it is quite interesting as i've seen pictures of bhutan and it looks exactly as the university! also, there is a cool place called the union. this place has lots of interesting meetings throughout the semester that provide information about scholarships and job offers as well as the main food court for the university is there.

    Bang for the buck

to be a major university the price is pretty good especially if someone receives financial aid, or if they have parents that can pay for school. even if you don't have those two, with a part-time medium paying job, you will be able to pay for school. the semester averages from 2,500-3,000 dlls.

    What to do for fun

for fun there are lots of activities inside campus. also, during the vacation break, there are lots of extra-curricular courses for a low price such as pottery, swimming classes, fitness classes, cooking classes, etc.

    Food and Dining

the university of texas at el paso has several restaurants inside the university including fast food places as well as healthy places to eat. also, it is surrounded by lots of delicious restaurants outside campus that offer discounts to the university students.

    Dorm Life

i do not live on the dorms so i wouldn't know...

    Academic Rigor

the classes will be challenging but it is possible!

    Tips for prospective students

put your best efforts into all classes. do not underestimate the professors. do not drop classes, it will be better for you to fail or pass with a low grade and you can re-take it again later. also, you might not know if at the end you can get a high grade and you won't have to re-take it and waste a semester.

    In three sentences

it is a great school. this school offers great opportunities to achieve experience before you graduate with your bachelors. i would rate it with the highest grade possible and recommend it to everyone!

There is Leech Grove, a place that most students must pass by as they go to their different classes and where you will find all kinds of people doing all kinds of things. You can see people selling books for 25 cents, people giving out free food, people trying to make their voice heard about different issues, and people just hanging around laying on the ground, relaxing before or after a class.

    What to do for fun

There are plenty of activities to do in UTEP, games to attend to, fun activities at the dorm buildings, plays, contests, rallies, etc. The secret of having fun lies in meeting as many different people as you can and get involved in the different groups and activities that take place around campus as well as in the city.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should be ready to find a variety of people with different ideas and with influence both from El Paso and Juarez across the border. They should get to know their professors and get to know the city in which the university is located, as well as the people that live in this city. And lastly, make good use of the library and the different installations around campus (specially the new ones).

    In three sentences

I think UTEP is a university that has great opportunities for its students. It is a good school that is continuing to grow and is allowing students to get to learn in the best installations possible. It is also a very comfortable place to study, and it is located in a city with some of the best sunsets in the United States.

    What to do for fun

There's of course the night clubs close by the school, to get to meet new people on the weekends. But during school hours there is a lot of pep rallies and fundraisers that promote different organizations.

    Food and Dining

Great! In a diverse community like UTEP there is an array of food to choose from. You're options are endless

Campus police are a little strict especially when it comes to parking or driving enforcement, but overall very friendly and really bring in there name as peace-officers

    What to do for fun

There are many organizations to choose from, and getting involved is exactly what you want to do especially as an incoming freshman. It helps keep you on your feet and really in the school spirit. From games, to movies to special campus help events, UTEP has so much going on, which should not be any excuse for not being able to participate or get involved.

    Food and Dining

There are so many choices, from A to Z. Everything is even a 10-15 minute walk at the most from the center of campus to wherever you want to go. There are even healthy options and intact some clubs and night hang-out spots for the weekends too.

    Dorm Life

I wouldn't know, but from what many of my on-campus friends say, they like it, because they get to get that college experience many high school seniors strive for, especially as freshman or community drawn students. It's pretty affordable and there are many restaurants to choose from that are walking distances from the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Although it seems like an easy school because of what downers say about it, some classes are challenging. A college is a college and just because it is not as popular as most people think, it is really getting up there in challenging students academically, but effectively!

    Tips for prospective students

Don't hesitate to apply here, it is a great school and I actually have grown to love it here. There are many benefits as a smaller school; it's cheaper, you have more of a one-to-one with your professors, choosing classes is somewhat easier to get into, parking is not as expensive as other schools. There are just so many benefits, so don't let this be your last choice of school because it has really brought me a lot of opportunity and new friendships, even with professors.

    In three sentences

Out of a scale of 1-10, I would give UTEP anywhere between a 7 or 8. Compared to a lot of schools, especially after a semester or two, this is a great cost effective school and is immensely beneficial in terms of money, credits, and time!

    Campus Safety

For the most part this campus is safe. I do have to warn that there is an occasional stalker appearance. Mostly men who stalk women. Also, theft is the biggest problem.

    Greek Life

I can not comment on this since I am not part of this. All I know is we do have Greek life.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many, I am only part of one so my view is limited. The club I belong to is 'the American Society of Microbiologists'. It is involved on campus and has a growing number of members every year. If someone was looking for a club/ organization for their needs or likes there is probably one.

Great for these types of students

Hispanic, if you are from Latin American heritage you will fit right in. A lot of conversation of everyday life is spoke in Spanish only. There are many on campus events that specializes in Hispanic traditions.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Unusual? Anything can be unusual if you are not from that area. I guess one thing that struck me as 'odd' was the fact that they sell nachos, burritos, and corn in a cup every where on campus. These food are very traditional for the huge Hispanic community we have. Go to any other university and you probably won't see that.

    Bang for the buck

Honestly, the prices just got raised for tuition. I pay a lot and see all these fees for things I never use. Also, the campus is under construction a lot and I see the things that are going into it, like high maintenance grass. This is a desert and all I can think about is the amount of money it requires to keep it looking not like a desert. I also see the old and broken lab equipment and wonder who distributes funds for use. So I give this a very poor rating, since the university doesn't spend its money where it should be, which is bettering the quality of education.

    What to do for fun

I spend most of my time in a research lab and not on campus activities. What I have gathered though is that there are tailgate parties during football season and various clubs/ organizations to join.

    Food and Dining

There are quit a few places but you should not attend around noon time, it is always crowded. The food is also very high priced so I would suggest bringing a lunch.

    Dorm Life

I can not comment on this since I do not live in a dorm.

    Academic Rigor

I believe it depends on your major and when you take a course. Certain professors teach better than others and certain courses are offered only at certain times. I personally consider this at average for (UT) University of Texas standards.

    Tips for prospective students

Tuition prices just got raised so apply for all scholarships, fellowships, on campus jobs, research programs, and possible jobs you can. I would say study but I think that is a given.

    In three sentences

It is a home town university, many students and their families are from here. It is a very community/ family orientated campus, with some expanding diverse cultures here and there. It is an average institution not the worst but not the best either.

    Campus Safety

Due to the fact that this university is located right near the downtown shopping area it makes it easy for any pedestrians to walk on campus. At the same token, there are many parking concerns on campus so it is very difficult for regular people to park on campus. The police are very vigilant, so there are hardly ever any incidences occurring that are related to crime or disruption of safety.

    Greek Life

There honestly is not that much Greek Life on campus. There are groups but there are not that many activities held by them. Their chapters are actually very small compared to other schools.

    Clubs and Activities

That are a few different club and activities, they span from safe spaces for LGBTQ individuals to campus wide activities. There are a few different programs being held at any time during the semester for students to check out and you can even bring friends and family not affiliated with the university for a nominal fee.

Great for these types of students

This university is great for students who love sun, hiking, walking or physical engagement of any sort. It is also great for non-English speaking students whose native language is Spanish as at least one course in any field of study is taught in Spanish.

    Bang for the buck

One of the best things about UTEP is its affordability for in state students and students who come from low income backgrounds. If you are transferring in from another state however you should make sure that you can afford the cost because it is quite pricey.

    What to do for fun

There are many bars in the area if that is what you're in to. Of course, there's regular activities such as bowling, cinema, mall shopping and many different restaurants to dine in. Also, just two hours away there are the mountain retreats in NM where you can ski, snowboard, enjoy nature, hike, climb, visit hot springs and natural waterfalls, small shops and boutiques, Native American towns and villages, casinos and outlet malls to shop.

    Food and Dining

There are no traditional dining halls, just a cafe that is not open until late and the food selection is not plentiful.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is alright. The dorms are not that spacious and can be quite expensive if you wish to live alone, other than that it can be interesting as nightlife is just a walk away.

    Academic Rigor

The rigor of the programs offered vary. Most however are fairly challenging and since the university is small, you can get more in depth with your professor during class to better understand the topics you are learning about.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are considering this university, take in account your current activity levels, how intense of a program you intend to study and how high your tolerance is for constant sun exposure.

    In three sentences

I rate my university as a seven on a scale of ten, which is roughly about three and a half stars out of five. I rate it this way because it is rather small and does not have much diversity due to the region, I believe that would bring more student activities and clubs to join; more liveliness on campus. The course studies are fairly challenging nonetheless so for some the lack of diversity and campus activities is not important.

There are several places on and off campus where you can go get your days fill. Most places on campus have good food: fresh, tasty, cooked just right, and made quickly.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at UTEP are clean, neat, organized and nice. They have many different living arrangements and there are students who will help you get organized for living in a dorm. My experience hasn't been anything like what they show in movies with parties and crazy things going on right outside, but that is not to say that these dorms are boring. Students here have fun and enjoy their time at UTEP, but they also respect those who prefer to sit inside to study or read or watch a movie.

    Academic Rigor

As a transfer student I cannot help with the rigor for the freshmen classes, and as an English and American literature major I cannot help with the rigor of other majors or courses. What I can say is that every professor is different but my general experience has been if you do the work, keep up with what you need to do, and attend class regularly the classes are passable, and actually quite enjoyable. Attendance and passion are important, I feel, in any class that you take, and if there is no passion for the subject, at least have some interest in it. Most of these classes do require a lot of work, reading, writing, projects and other homework, but if you keep up with it and do what you need to be doing, these classes should be fun and easy and mostly entertaining.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus, ask to sit in on a perspective teacher's lecture, or just go walk around and ask other students. The best way to know if you'll like it is if you see what the school has to offer you. Understandably this isn't the school for everyone, and not everyone is good for the school, so visit or ask about it. If you can't visit try to email some of the professors or students in the outreach programs and see what you like and what you don't like about the school. It has a lot to offer as long as you know where to look.

    In three sentences

This university is convenient for students around the area. It is economic, has wonderful professors, and actually has a wonderful learning environment with the students, faculty and staff all involved in making it a good place to learn. The school is undergoing many changes in both academics and the architecture of the campus which promise to make it a fantastic school for any students.

Some strange things I learned at orientation is that Engineering students take lots of pride. The orientation guide told us that Engineering students dress in green clothes and use green paint on their face on St. Patrick's day and run around cheering. They have a huge Engineering building.

    Bang for the buck

Well, college is expensive so look for scholarships and apply for financial aid. When you register for fall start using the benefits. They have new pools and you can also join a zumba class and many other things available when you are an active student.

    What to do for fun

With a group of friends there are plenty of things to do. El Paso is not to big on fun but you can make it fun. There is an outlet mall, Western Playland, Casino, Wet-n-Wild, and lots of little restaurants to hang out at. There is a Starbucks on the campus you can enjoy a cup of pick me up.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of restaurants and social places to go to. If you don't want to leave campus they also have Chick-fil-a, Pizza Hut, and more restaurants inside the Union Building. Prices are fair.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are on campus and quite expensive. From the orientation I attended research suggests that students who live on campus do better with grades. You also save money on traveling expenses such as gas and battling for a parking.

    Academic Rigor

As any college would require, it is a lot of studying and attention in class. You have to be involved in discussions and use all the resources including tutoring and the library.

    Tips for prospective students

The architecture of this college includes many stairs and the summers are HOT. I also suggest you enroll early since classes fill up very quick. Use the Utep.edu website to research information about the college.

    In three sentences

The college is growing in popularity and on track to be a tier 1 college. There are many additions including a new research lab to aid in the research in chemistry, science, math and engineering. Great for these types of students

One club that has become very interesting on campus is the Marching Miner Regiment. Students who are looking for a great music experience should join this program for it is very worth it. The band plays very well and doesn't do typical shows on the field.

    What to do for fun

Sports games are the pride of the campus especially the Miner football games where the band pumps up the crowd with really great tunes. There is also an annual pep rally called Minerpalooza that acts like a parade and really lets you enjoy clubs that UTEP has to offer. There are also many rallies that go on during school hours for all to see making the campus a voice to hear.

    Food and Dining

Around campus there are lots of fun places to go to for a meal such as fast food, and other restaurants that are open til good hours. There is a place on campus where students can eat as well called the union. The Union offers breakfast and lunch during campus hours.

    Dorm Life

Dorms at UTEP are very private and surrounded by great landscape that is well kept. Students say that the dorm provides the free wifi of the campus so you do not have to hastle for any Internet connection. The Dorms itself are kept pristine and are said to be very comfortable for student life.

    Academic Rigor

Often you will find that the students at UTEP are rigorous when it comes to studies; many often stay til late hours in the night. Study groups are plentiful inside the library and many rooms are provided for this reason. Academic tutors are available in labs around the campus specifically in the writing lab where people are in waiting to help you.

    Tips for prospective students

My advice for students would be to check out all the programs UTEP offers. Such as the fine arts, the student council, and the many clubs that work to keep school spirit up. I also would recommend that students use many of the resources as possible for their academics, the university has many state of the art technological advances.

    In three sentences

The University of Texas at El Paso has made me feel privileged to be there. The Professors are really helpful and so is the staff. The college itself is stunning in architecture and creates a very positive atmosphere.

    Campus Safety

The amount of campus police and security throughout the campus might seem exaggerated from the point of view of the common person passing by. This is exactly what makes me feel safe in my campus however. Some of the classes let out late and the security is there to watch over us. They are easily accessible as well from their number being posted on every building to the direct phone posts that are spread across the campus.

    Greek Life

Greek life here at the University of Texas at El Paso is well advertised throughout the year. They help out the campus along with the community that is around them in order to promote healthy habits. Of course, I would be lying if I said the parties and socials were not fun after a hard day at school.

    Clubs and Activities

If you have a hobby chances are there is already a club for you. Organizations are readily available to the student who wants to join and the doors are always open for new members. The campus promotes interaction amongst their students with different activities throughout the semester which include the big ones such as homecoming and minerpalooza.

Great for these types of students

Most schools are great for either one type or another of student; this campus is different however. It has become not only tolerant but accepting of all cultures, races, and personality types that are out there. Acknowledging and understanding that different types people make up our university lets one comprehend the bigger picture; billions of different people make up our world.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Here at UTEP we have what is known as Minerpalooza which is an event where everyone goes out and celebrates the fact that they are part of the university with games and activities for all of the students and their families. Of course for the more reserved student, there is a museum of art that is incorporated right into the campus. Here many different hispanic artists portray their heritage in our border town.

    Bang for the buck

You definitely get what you pay for at UTEP. The only way you do not get what you paid for is if you do not use the many different facilities and computer labs that are available. There are different places that offer tutoring for all of the subjects that are taught there and the teachers have multiple office hours in which they can help a student out. The amount of money charged correlates proportionately with what the student gets from their campus.

    What to do for fun

There are never ending campus activities that make it near impossible to be bored. There are parks set up throughout the campus just in case you want to take a break or plan a picnic with friends. The fraternities and sororities are constantly planning entertaining skits or games that are free and open to the public. The night life is also busy there for those who want to go out for a drink with friends or dancing with their partner. The location of the campus is but a mile or two away from all of the clubs and bars that are available just in case its been a rough semester.

    Food and Dining

There are restaurants all around the campus that are in walking distance along with a few well known franchises within the campus itself. The campus also has little stores and a restaurant where students can eat. You do not get tired of the food however because there are so much to choose from whether its a well known restaurant or a family owned place that serves your favorite dish. There are a few supermarkets and corner stores all around just in case you want some home made food as well.

    Dorm Life

The security in the dorms are perfect for staying there. The college accidents and crimes are practically non-existant. The community that they have set up is practical being that it is so close to the campus. It becomes quite easy for someone to understand that it is nothing more than a giant family they are living with.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are difficult but not impossible to pass. What good would it be if the classes were not challenging. It is important to understand that the proper amount of study time is needed when you are attending any college or university and it is no different here. The teachers are tough and strict because they know what they want, but only one decide just how much they are willing to push for the grade. Although not all of the classes are demanding, when it starts feeling ridiculously hard, its necessary not to forget that you want to learn and that is why you are there.

    Tips for prospective students

Taking a look into the different programs that are available is always a good idea when attending any university so that you can maximize your chances of fulfilling your plans for the future. Get to know who you are in class with especially your teachers so that you can build a good and stable connection with them. Never forget that the help is there if you just take a little bit of time to look for it.

    In three sentences

The University of Texas at El Paso is nothing more than one giant melting pot where all sorts of cultures and races have blended together making it the university that it is. Help is always available for those students who look for it, making it failure practically impossible. The money paid out to the school in relation to what is taught is greatly in proportion; if not tilted to the students favor.

    What to do for fun

To do for fun, one can attend school clubs, frats, parties, etc. If you have a passport you can also go to Mexico for clubbing. There is not a lot to do besides that.

    Food and Dining

Food in UTEP is very limited, the majority of the food shops close at 5 pm. It is very expensive and has no variety. I would not recommend it.

    Dorm Life

Life in the dorms is unique. The people that live there are different than the rest of the school population. The space is acceptable.

    Academic Rigor

UTEP is a great school academically. It gives many options for students as in preparation, opportunities, and experience. UTEP is school in progress for tier-one.

    Tips for prospective students

If you will be dedicated to your academics, I will recommend this school. This is not a party school, so don't expect to have the typical college experience. This is is also a commuter school and expect to listen to Spanish natives.

    In three sentences

    Bang for the buck

UTEP is a school increasing in merit as each year goes by. The tuition for an in-state full time student nears $4000; a lot less than other top notch universities. A price quite low for one of Forbes' top 10% universities in the nation.

Defenitely before you begin your semester go a few days during the week just to explore the campus and become familiar with the buildings where your classes will be in. What to do for fun

El Paso offers hiking, biking and beautiful running areas along the mountainous areas. Although be ware during the summer time the heat can be truly excruciating. UTEP like any other campus offers sport competitions, a swimming facility to cool off and a somewhat decent club life.

    Food and Dining

Food and dining is adequate but provides very little options especially for vegetarians or vegans. Most of the foods are unhealthy; if you want to eat healthy be prepared to eat nothing but salads and wraps! However, off campus and in the vicinity there are excellent restaurants.

    Dorm Life

I did not live in the dorms so I can't really give a lot of advise but from what I experienced it was extremely nice. Most of the dorms I visited at other campus's are cramped and require you to share a community shower. UTEP's dorms are more like an apartment and are usually a big hang out place for students after class.

    Academic Rigor

First and foremost UTEP has some amazing professors who are remarkable at teaching; however, despite the fact that they are great teachers many institute a curve that in my opinion allows students to cruise by. Yet I am not speaking of absolutes because there are two sides of the spectrum; extremely difficult teachers and extremely easy teachers. Overall though there are only a few tough teachers that challenge students while the vast majority only mildly challenge students.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you are on top of your own degree plan! While advisers are there to provide assistance it is usually not very helpful. Instead seek advice from students or prior students because they have already been through the programs. However, like any thing in life don't rely on one source there are a variety of ways to accomplish any task; therefore, ask several people not just students but professors, staff, etc.

    In three sentences

Overall The University of Texas at El Paso is an excellent school and provides every essential program and organization to help every student succeed; for instance, UTEP provided me the opportunity to get paid while doing research and attend conferences that were fully paid for. Nevertheless, even though UTEP is an overall excellent school it has flaws especially by lowering it's standards for success. Almost every class I attended offered a graded curve and this ultimately made it hard to gauge how I progressed intellectually as a student.

    Academic Rigor

Your basics classes are pretty easy if you give the time for them. Professors are reasonable and very knowledgeable and will not hesitate to help a student in need.

    Tips for prospective students

Register early to ensure you get your desired class and time. Most of the colleges on campus require advising before they let you go on to register, so I recommend that you get advised early, preferably during the previous semester, so that you can go straight on to registering by the appropriate time.

    In three sentences

Overall the school is pretty good, though the staff in some departments do not know anything outside their department. Registering is easy, so far the professors I have encountered are knowledgeable and are open to helping one out with any trouble they have during the course.

    Campus Safety

Sure, UTEP is safe. I have not been robbed once in my two-plus years here. Those are good numbers, I'd say.

    Greek Life

I do not know anything about sororities or fraternities. I try not to get too involved in things like that taken that they do not interest me in the least. They are present on campus, however.

    Clubs and Activities

Absolutely, there are clubs for, say, foreign languages, philosophy students, creative writing, etc. I would think that every university has this, though, so I don't think it very unusual and alluring. It certainly is nice, either way.

Great for these types of students

Hispanic students would certainly fit in, taken that the campus is around twenty minutes away from the Mexico border. Students that enjoy blinding sun and scorching heat would also feel at home here. I could do without.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a lot of local history that the university tries to get people involved in. Things about the border and Hispanic culture. That is a nice touch, I suppose. I can gather all that information from my own home, though.

    Bang for the buck

I think that, considering the rate of tuition, UTEP delivers. Tuition is not as high as that of some other universities in the country, so we cannot expect for it to be one of the best campuses. It is certainly sufficient.

    What to do for fun

There are numerous extracurricular activities to do on campus. There is a gym available, which contains not only usual training machines, but a swimming pool as well. There is also billiard tables available to students, even though they charge per use, and theaters in which to watch plays and such.

    Food and Dining

The food is a bit costly. However, this should be expected in a college campus. Aside from this, food is varied and available at an extensive amount of places within campus.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in a dorm, therefore I cannot give my opinion from a first-hand point of view. From what I do see, dorms are sufficient for sustaining life. That, as well as the price, should be the important thing.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are challenging enough. Although I have no other experience with college, I have to say that UTEP seems more laid back than other universities. That is, at least, what I hear.

    Tips for prospective students

Students should make sure to speak to the professors and advisors frequently in order to stay on top of their academic and financial progress. They should also make use of the facilities on the campus as much as possible, since we pay for them in tuition. Staying on top of class schedules and requirements is a must, do not take it lightly.

    In three sentences

The university has a good campus. The professors have been accommodating, knowledgeable, and within reach so far in my college career. Advising and financial aid support offices are easily contactable.

    Campus Safety

The safety of this campus is good, you must have your I.D. for certain things like gathering information of your personal student account and accessing online information as well. There is plenty of campus security as wall so in case something should ever happen there is always someone to contact in case of an emergency.

Overall safe campus where nothing really happens.

    Greek Life

There's a wide variety of sororities and fraternities on campus.

Great for these types of students

Great for students interested in Engineering, Math, Science, Psychology, Nursing, and other degrees of that nature. Not so much for students (like myself) focusing on the creative arts.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is an annual Minerpalooza that takes place. Happens late in the evening, as is basically a huge festival at the start of semester.

    Bang for the buck

High quality education, plenty to occupy yourself with on campus, and lots of interesting individuals from all walks of life to interact with. Definitely worth it.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of different events that happen throughout a given semester. From plays, musicals, gallery opening, football games, movie showings, and festivals. There's always something going on at the university. Now whether or not you'll be well-informed of such events is still a little sketchy.

    Food and Dining

Although there is a wide variety of excellent restaurants surrounding campus, the campus itself is a bit lackluster in terms of quality dining. There are, say, two or three dining choices on campus that are actually high quality. The rest tend to be very lackluster and average.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorms myself, however I know many individuals that do. From what I can gather, the dorms are great living spaces. Simple, clean, and serve the optimal function that a living quarters should meet.

    Academic Rigor

Most classes are pretty easy to adapt to and aren't very challenging. There are a few courses here and there that are run at a top-of-the-line level that force you to put vigor in your occupation as a student.

    Tips for prospective students

Although classes can be rigorous, just stay focused and complete everything that needs to be done. As long as you do what is required of you, there is no reason you shouldn't succeed.

    In three sentences

An adequate in-state school that was a safe an obvious choice for me to attend. Although there is not a lot of variety in the programs offered here (for my major) the programs that are offered, are generally favorable. I'd recommend this university to anyone.

    Campus Safety

I always feel safe on campus both as a resident and a student, but I've heard of students who aren't so happy. Its all subjective.

    Clubs and Activities

There are around 200 registered organizations on campus, so now matter what your tastes or interest are, there is something for you! These include clubs, honor societies, sororities, and fraternities, among others.

Great for these types of students

UTEP is great for students who want a good quality education for a reasonably low cost.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Some traditions on campus are the Gator Camp hosted for incoming freshmen, which was a lot of fun. We also have our Minerpalooza and Homecoming events. The Bhutan architecture is always a distinguishing factor.

    Bang for the buck

I strongly believe that if you are a hard working student and you put an effort in your education at UTEP, you will definitely get your bang for the buck.

    What to do for fun

As I mentioned, there are several bars and clubs close to campus, along with restaurants and shopping centers. El Paso is the type of city that doesn't have many things to do. You really have to dig in order to find the events that are worth going to. I guess it all depends on your definition of fun.

    Food and Dining

There are several dining options on campus that are relatively good. But personally, I've gotten bored of them after a while. The prices are also a bit to high in my opinion. I usually prefer to bring my own lunch, even though its tedious.

    Dorm Life

Living on campus is great! The dorms are very close to campus (about 5 minutes walking) and are also close to markets and grocery stores. There are also clubs and bars close by for all those party people (although I have never actually been to any in the two years I've lived on campus).

    Academic Rigor

The academic load depends on the individual and their interest. There is always a level of challenge in each class, but not more than a hard working student should be able to handle.

    Tips for prospective students

The best tip is to become involved! Find a job on campus, student organizations or clubs, and interactions with your professors.

    In three sentences

UTEP is a great choice for students who can't afford the price of a fancy private school. The quality of the education is great, just as the student-professor relationship that few big universities have.

    Food and Dining

The food is definitely not the best out there, but when it comes to taking care of the student health UTEP is definitely on top. Most food served is of quality and healthy for a student gone on an empty stomach all day. From yogurt to sandwiches, to Fruit and ice cream.

    Dorm Life

I am not one to speak about this subject because I have never lived in one; but what i could say is that many students compliment the staff for making it such an easy and comfortable atmosphere to live in.

    Academic Rigor

Many people seem to talk down on the university itself. What many don't know is that UTEP is ranked amongst the top universities for engineering aside from acceptance rate. The education offered along with the professors is just magnificent.

    Tips for prospective students

Students must learn the number one rule, and that is time management. No student will be able to fulfill a long term career without organization. My number to rule is, learn to sacrifice at times of partying and non-related school activities. These two tips should be an easy set up for any prospective student.

    In three sentences

UTEP is a well rounded university, ranging from Hispanics to African Americans, and from athletes to club members. The education given a UTEP is beyond many students beliefs. Six colleges make up the university but a lot of competition awaits.

Parents sending their children off to UTEP should be aware no violence takes place here and Juarez riots do not affect the city at all.

    Greek Life

Greek life on campus is said to be very fun. Each year during homecoming these brothers and sisters fight for the most spirited award and the competition gets heated down to the last Greek letter. UTEP is a great place for students from out of state because of the diverse culture within its walls. Everyone who moves here falls in love with the land and the weather so if you live in a very rainy place and wish to live in a dry climate this University is the place for you. If you like authentic Mexican dishes this is the place for you. Do you like a friendly community? Then come on over to UTEP!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One unusual tradition is the Battle of I-10 in which a UTEP and NMSU, two Universities that have an epic rivalry get together and battle it out at a football game. These two Universities are only cities apart and the games tend to get exciting. Even the marching bands get involved and play at the end of the games to see who is the best. One location on the campus that is mysterious is the mining tunnel in P-5, a student has to climb a mountain in order to see the insides of this place in which no one knows what has taken place.

    Bang for the buck

What a student would really want to check out is the three great organizations on the campus, the basketball teams, the track team, and the marching pride for they are truly the spirit and pride of the University. These three are amazing in what they do to strive for excellence and every student needs to see each of them when attending.

    What to do for fun

The campus holds a lot of functions for students to do, so future students make sure to check your email. During the summer the campus likes to hold their weekly movie on the lawn nights and these are really fun. Students bring their own food and blankets and congregate to watch a classical movie. Another thing to look forward to in Minerpalooza which is an annual pep rally held in the inner campus; all organizations are invited to the event. Homecoming is also a big deal and it last an entire week; a parade is held the day before a football game and the King and Queen are thus announced. The themes of the homecoming are chosen by the students.

    Food and Dining

On campus there are many eateries that one can go to for sustenance such as a place called the Union which is the place students have their down time between classes. This place houses Chinese food, Mexican, and a little place that sells burgers. Another place is called Delicious and this is mostly a Mexican restaurant by the library; the food there is grand and must be tasted. One can also go to the street called Mesa which is next to the campus where you will find corner stores fast food and restaurants you can visit on a Saturday night.

    Dorm Life

Miner Heights is where students in dorms reside and the conditions are surprisingly great. The walk isn't far from campus at all, and you can be sure all appliances will work accordingly to their function. Rooming on this campus is affordable as well, and the students themselves are very friendly.

    Academic Rigor

The rigor is fairly high but due to the fact that many of the students do not perform very well, professors are sometimes forced to dumb down the subjects and give a large amount of redos and extra credit just to help students get by. Rigor is there but is also accompanied by low competition from other students.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is a huge deal on campus and has so many resources available to students. Campus police make sure that every student is as safe as possible, as well as the campus as a whole. They offer resources like free escorting (24/7), free rides if your car runs out of gas, police efforts, and many more.

    Greek Life

Greek life gives you the opportunity to be social, make new friends, and have so many opportunities opened up to you. They motivate you to do well in school and help the community with your respective philanthropy. As well as giving you the greatest sense of what it is to be a true friend (i.e. a brother or sister). Although Greek Life may be small here, we are all a family. As a community we do so much together and have so many activities that benefit ourselves and the community of El Paso. Being a part of a sorority, I know all that it has to offer. I have had so many opportunities to become a leader and become involved in so much more than I ever thought I could do. As well as help those in need of it through all the community service efforts we perform.

    Clubs and Activities

There are literally too many clubs and organizations too mention. There is a something for everyone, and there is no way to not find where you belong here. Organizations give you great motivation to do great academically (due to the fact of GPA requirements), and it is worth it to do good in school and be able to have fun. Every organization does a wide aray of activities, always making it fun to be involved with some type (if not many) organization.

Great for these types of students

Every type of student should experience what UTEP has to offer for them, because everyone can get something out of the school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Throughout campus there are so many small, hidden places that are beautiful to hang out. The best thing to do to find these places is just explore. No matter what you will always find a new place that you did not know about and you will fall in love with each and every beautiful hidden treasure.

    Bang for the buck

You get out what you put in. If you put your time into making UTEP a great place to school, then you will get just that and more. If you just do nothing but academics while you school here then you will not get everything out of UTEP that is available. You must be ready to explore what the school has to offer.

    What to do for fun

UTEP always has multiple activities to participate in, each and everyone done by the tons of organizations available for joining. There are constant fun, educational (ex: seminars and lectures), leisure activities (ex: movies), and even more exciting things to do on campus.

    Food and Dining

UTEP has so many dining establishments that it is hard to get tired of what there is available to eat. Not only does the campus hold many food locations, but the area surrounding area also has so many food locations (many close enough to walk) that you always have a wide variety to choose what you would like to eat. Locations are spread out all over campus, which you gives you the opportunity to venture the campus, find somewhere perfect for the day, and be comfortable where you would like to eat.

    Dorm Life

Although I do not live in the dorms, I have visited them extensively and I can say that they are beautiful and have nice grounds for students and gatherings.

    Academic Rigor

Classes at UTEP are challenging enough for a student to learn what is necessary, as well as far beyond that, but easy enough to leave the class with a great grade. All that is needed is determination to pass and hard work put into your classes.

    Tips for prospective students

For native El Pasoans, do not overlook UTEP. Although it may look like a last resort, seriously invest your time into looking at this college seriously. It has a lot to offer, and going here will save you money, give you a great first college experience, and offer many accommodations to coming here. Look into all the education plans and services available. By looking into them you will be able to open so many opportunities to grow academically, professionally, and socially for yourself.

    In three sentences

UTEP is a clear 9, no question, they have a college environment like no other. They offer the best in classes and learning, organizations, leadership opportunities, social interactions, and safety. The school gives more than college experience, it offers great life experience, with so many resources and opportunities available to students.

    What to do for fun

There's a lot of events that go on and are put together by different organizations and its definitely worth attending. You meet many people.

    Food and Dining

I've never eaten at school regularly but sometimes it is expensive.

    Dorm Life

Living the dorm is a good experience. I didn't live in a dorm but I had a friend that did and I would spend most my time there. It's a good way to meet people but you have to acknowledge that sometimes living there can distract from your studies so you have to find people who you know will respect you and your studies. You also need to find people who you will be able to have a friendship with because things can happen and you could get into problems with each other.

    Tips for prospective students

Something I would tell students is to be ready because it does get difficult to get good grades if you are not dedicated. You have to start deciding what path you want in your life because you also don't want to spend money in courses you do not need.

    In three sentences

Utep is a good school but maybe if they offered other majors dealing with arts like interior design or architecture or broader science degrees like forensic science that way students have a veariety of majors to choose. But this is a great school and great at what it does.

    Campus Safety

well there are always campus police on every corner, but too many people can just walk onto campus. Doesn't make me feel safe at all. I would prefer it if students had to check in through a metal detector; it would be a lengthy process but at least we wouldn't have to be afraid of a looney coming onto campus with weapons. We often get a few homeless stragglers wandering onto campus asking for money.

    Greek Life

I am not really aware of the greek life. I am not in a sorority but we definitely have many who are a part of that lifestyle on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many. there are fencing teams, rock climbing teams, and everything else you can think of.

Great for these types of students

Definitely, for engineers, and anybody already living in el paso, or at least close by. Great for students wanting to get a good education for less.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We really don't have any unusual traditions anymore. We used to, such as making freshman wear beanies so that people knew who were freshman. we also used to paint the campus green on a certain day of the year, but now we really don't do anything unusual nor have any unusual locations on campus, at least none that i am aware of.

    Bang for the buck

My degree doesn't have the best courses offered, but it will do. I like my options well enough, but i would prefer it if i LOVED my options. Nonetheless, for $5000 a year what more could you ask for?

    What to do for fun

there are concerts during lunch time. super cheap movies that have just been released into theaters. For instance, iron man 3 just came out, you can see it at the school for about three dollars. all of the departments frequently have luncheons and pot lucks. it can be a great school if you get involved.

    Food and Dining

Much more expensive that going to the regular restaurant down the street but that's to be expected. There is variety, but it just so happens to be the variety that i do not like.

    Dorm Life

not from information from personal experience, but from what i hear its not what you see on t.v. It's much quieter but you still get the drama and most of typical dorm life here at UTEP

    Academic Rigor

It could always be harder, but it is really challenging. Its challenging because you don't know the subject beforehand unless its a core class, and its difficult because of the work you have to do to understand the classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't procrastinate!; you will recieve extra credit in most classes, but don't rely on that for good grades!; take only classes that you really think you'll enjoy

    In three sentences

All of the students are extremely friendly and helpful; the professors really know their stuff and are passionate about their work; of course, every school has a few professors that really need to leave.

    Bang for the buck

UTEP is really cheap and you are getting a pretty good education.

    What to do for fun

To be honest, fun is really limited. You can go Greek life, but that's really if you want a high level of socialization. Even then, there are only about 5 Greek groups on campus and only a few intermingle. There are organizations, but I wouldn't describe really any of them as particularly fun or interesting. El Paso is boring, That's a fact. If you're looking for a fun, social college experience, don't come here.

    Food and Dining

There are several food options, but they're expensive. The food is descent, but I could never afford to have it very often.

    Dorm Life

I did not live on campus, but I would describe it was okay. I know a couple of people who did live on campus and they really enjoyed it. I think it's a bit better if you aren't from El Paso, though. They frequently have events and things going on. My friends who lived in dorms always complained they never had any sleep because they were constantly socializing. The dorms themselves are pretty big too and have an apartment feel.

    Academic Rigor

UTEP is moderately challenging. I would describe most classes to be at a level that requires attention and work, but not at an unusual excess. You can get by pretty easily, at least in basic classes, by simply doing what you need to do. If you are taking a more difficult major (such as science or engineering), your coursework will definitely be more intense and your classes more challenging. It honestly depends on your major.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are majoring or pursuing something that requires lots of networking (ex: communications, arts, business) do not come to UTEP. The city will not offer many opportunities at all and I guarantee you will have trouble finding a job after graduation. Basically, if you career is very competitive, the experience you rack up at UTEP will be extremely minimal compared to your competitors. However, if your career is strictly based on education (engineering, medicine, law, teaching) then UTEP is a great choice. It's cheap and will give you a good education and you will easily find a job afterwards.

    In three sentences

The school has a very nice campus and is very big. The professors are for the most part very interesting and intelligent. However, the student population is composed mostly of uneducated, ignorant, and unambitious people.

Wonderful school full of great academic experiences both in and out of the classroom. The faculty is not only encouraging but really willing to help students out when they most need it. Student excellence is the number one priority, this message is clearly seen across campus.

    Campus Safety

They have emergency phones in the parking lots just in case you feel unsafe walking back to your vehicle alone.

    Clubs and Activities

The Philosophy Club is a well organized group that you can discus meaning and purposes of life and what it is to live.

Great for these types of students

Commercial Music Majors, I recommend to you visit some of the venues around campus to see some live bands. Here's a list: Black Market Lowbrow Percolator Sumatra Hookah There are all around the UTEP area. There are more around the east side of the city.

    Bang for the buck

Little Caesar's down mesa you can get pretty good pizza for five dollars.

    What to do for fun

There are several celebrations to attend at the University such as Minerpalooza, Mid-night Breakfast or Tailgating parties but if you're into live music there are several bars and venues around campus that hold selections of different bands and genres you can attend to.

    Food and Dining

The selection is not that great and it is expensive but there are plenty of restaurants around campus one can dine in.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in the dorms but from what I've seen and heard it's pretty nice.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on who you get as a professor it can either be the easiest class you'll ever take or the toughest.

    Tips for prospective students

Get in shape and do plenty of cardiovascular activities.

    In three sentences

The University of Texas at El Paso is a very large campus with plenty of hills and mountains. Walking from one class to another can be a struggle as at times the shuttles run late and you can be left climbing mountain just to get to a class. The basic courses are explained with unnecessary complexity but at the least the architecture is a beautifully Bhutanese theme.

    Campus Safety

Campus is pretty safe, and it is located in one of the safest cities in the country.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs for students to join in.

Great for these types of students

There is a big amount of different students but they are mainly in the Nursing or Engineering programs.

    Bang for the buck

So far it's ok, they have little hidden fees here and there, but overall it is cheap.

    Food and Dining

It is expensive and they don't offer much variety, yeah a few fast foods and Vegan options for those who are, inside campus, but if you want to try different foods you need to get out of campus and have your own car.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

So far, depending on the professor you get, it can be easy or stressing it all depends, but they are mainly Power-point readers.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to get around, English is used here, but most students as well as staff (Ex. Janitors, cooks, etc) hardly know English and mainly speak Spanish, so take some time to know some basic sentences just in case. It is also sunny 355 days a year, so take your sunblock even during winter, only when it is cloudy does it get chilly, along with winds though, it does get cold!

    In three sentences

UTEP is mainly a University for Engineering, Science, or anything else with Math. It has a high rate of Hispanic or Mexican student population, but you do see students from abroad. It can be cheap or expensive, depending on what you major in and compare it to other Universities.

    Clubs and Activities

The best way to enjoy college is to get involved. A great tool for looking up clubs is Minetracker. Some clubs are really intensive and require a lot of commitment, but others hardly meet and rarely get involved.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The fifth floor of the library is a great place to study or make out, your choice.

    Bang for the buck

Considering how much I pay, about $4,000 a semester, I'm getting a ton for what I pay. A variety of services from math tutoring to gym membership is included in the tuition costs, and a lot of people don't take advantage of them. People say that UTEP is expensive, but compared to other Ut system schools, it's a great bargain.

    What to do for fun

Not many students take advantage of the free tickets to the football and basketball games. You're already paying tuition, so you might as well go to the games (the football team is slowly getting better, but the men's basketball has always been great).

    Food and Dining

There's really only one major place for food, and several other stands. The Union has a majority of food places, about five different ones. The EPNGCC only has three places. Across campus, some colleges, from Nursing to Education, have small stands with easy access grab and go food. The options are slim, and if you have the time and money, it's sometimes easier to travel off campus to one of the fast food places across the street.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are on the small side, and are a bit far from the main campus ( up a hill affectionately called Cardiac Hill). They're convenient if you want to be close to campus, but they're not a necessity for part of the college experience. There are plenty of living options close to campus if the dorms aren't your style.

    Academic Rigor

Some of the classes are considered major blow off courses, meaning you barely have to show up to pass. Others are the opposite, and can be really demanding. Rate My Professor is really helpful in deciding which professor to take.

    Tips for prospective students

UTEP is not a huge campus, but it's pretty easy to get lost, even for an old student. Having a map is always handy, but don't be afraid to ask other students. Chances are they know where you're going, and if they don't, they'll be willing to help. UTEP is a close campus, and everyone's willing to help, all they need is someone to ask.

    In three sentences

Most people hate on UTEP, but it's actually a really great place. The professors are great, the students are great, and it's a great atmosphere. Did I mention it's great?

    What to do for fun

Explore the area. There are many restaurants, bars, coffee shops and plenty of other cool places that will keep you entertained.

    Food and Dining

On campus you will find about ten different restaurants to choose from which are reasonably priced. Outside of campus there are various restaurants to choose from; some are local and others big chain. There is always something new to try.

    Academic Rigor

Usually, there will always be some type of competition among students. In the classroom you will notice scholars who are take their education very seriously and try their hardest to excel and be the best. In the other end of the spectrum, there are some students who don't take their courses seriously and slack off; do not be part of this group!

    Tips for prospective students

Talk to people who have already taken the courses you need to take, so that you may get an idea of what will be expected from you. Always invest time in studying. Pay close attention in the classroom, take notes and ask questions!

    In three sentences

Provides great opportunities for its students. Professors do everything possible to help their students and ensure their success in the course. Laid-back atmosphere with friendly people who are enthusiastic about their future.

    What to do for fun

UTEP loves its futball and basketball season equally. A lot of students enjoy going to the parades, tale gating, partying, and the games in general. There's a lot of bars nearby the campus where a lot of students love to continue their partying hours after the game is over. Also, having Ciudad Juarez just 15 minutes away from the campus, is a major plus for many who might like to experience Mexican partying, restaurants, and maybe a little touristic kind of environment for those who are not aware of the city.

    Food and Dining

There's lots of small restaurants offered at the UTEP union which are really good. Sadly, a lot of them are a bit too expensive for my taste, but it's ok when you get one or two meals a week rather than being eating in fast-food places 5 days a week.

    Dorm Life

I don't live in UTEP campus myself but I heard its nice that its extremely close, there are students from all over the country and outside of the country (especially those who are in athletics) and that its overall ok. El Paso is not an extremely expensive place to live in, so through time, students have managed to move out of campus and enjoy living elsewhere near the school where they could get a bit more privacy and a more local environment.

    Academic Rigor

When it comes to academic rigor, UTEP is not so strict when it comes to the professors. As any other school, it is of extreme importance to turn in your work on time, be presentable when having important presentations, and overall respectful. Other than that, most professors are very friendly and helpful.

    Tips for prospective students

One of the major tips is to maybe consider learning Spanish. I believe more than 80%, if not more, of the student population comes from Mexican descendents who know Spanish, which might help students make friends a bit easier. Another tip is to carry with you as little as possible when it comes to regular school days. UTEP, although located in a rather small city, is a huge campus, and depending in your area of study, you might end up walking long distances either way. Lastly, I highly recommend getting into contact with your professors of your specific major as well as with your advisors. If they see you interested, motivated, and hard-workative, they might help you land scholarships, jobs, or internships.

    In three sentences

This University is known to be a bi-cultural university located in the border of the city of El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Over the years, slowly but surely, this University has grown to be recognized as one of the best Engineering Schools in the country as well as Business. UTEP has so much to offer to students around the world and still has more and new opportunities for those students who decide to attend in the future.

    What to do for fun

Being a adventurous individual by being a pilot, attending school organizations, catching up with old friends, and volunteering in different institutions.

    Food and Dining

The food is poor because the quantity (portion size) of food as well as the the price is overpriced. For prices being placed on food one can expect the food to match up the price amount.

    Dorm Life

The rowdy neighbors to the frequent visits from the cops and to the furnishings of the dorms being of poor quality.

    Academic Rigor

The phrase Academic Rigor is the definition of how one pushes him or herself and managing to handle difficult courses. Although UTEP brings a variety of academic rigor depending on the students interest in fields of study.

    Tips for prospective students

Always be organized, college is an opportunity to prepare for the future, bring lunch because food prices are to high, there's always hope in case of mess ups, make friends with advisors and professors, and take every opportunity.

    In three sentences

The University of Texas at El Paso is unlike any other institution for one the atmosphere brought from the students gives a welcoming and sense of belonging with the helpful faculty, student organizations, and the many opportunities offered in campus in many fields. UTEP also brings students from different cultures by being a globally accepting institution being placed in a mountain and having architecture from Bhutan. Another aspect is how the UTEP is very community based by hosting family local community events.

    What to do for fun

Having such a decorative campus, a new quiet temple is being added. Granted from international friends, we are happy to announce it is being made as we speak and almost completed. Also the scenerywill be such a great place to relax and do homework or catch up on the past assignments you may have missed. Though the scenery is nice, the gym is a nice place to work off all stress and tiredness of the long day at only a school's free expence.

    Food and Dining

With a Starbucks at hand, snack time is great. Though cafe time is a little boring, but you can always spice up the lunch hour with a little off campus driving to a wing shack or a treat to some fine dinning.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great! However sometimes the paring is simply uncompatable. Just suggest a room change and fast.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor is an outstanding piece of evidence. With classes ready to be handed to each student ready to learn all homework assignments and in class learning is to a nice degree. Allowing each individual to freely ask questions at will and capable of after class sessions for a little one on one time with the professor.

    Tips for prospective students

Make your way early, traffic gets busy fast. With kids every where no one could help you on time for classs. Lines get long fast and things get busy quick, don't make appointments late or you'll be waiting on your only item for eternity.

With such great accomodations and staff, the University of Texas at El Paso is the happiest campus to be on. Students stick to themselves going to and fo from classes with members helping you along the way. At the end of the day, you will feel a special sensation as to what a good day is and always can be.

    Campus Safety

El Paso is already one of the safest cities in the country; UTEP is a reflection of that fact. There is always light, there are always cops around, the vast majority of the people there are very friendly, you can ask for a police escort at night if you feel unsafe, and there are posters and signs everywhere with the police phone number in case of an emergency.

    Greek Life

There is a big presence of Greek Life on UTEP, and they are almost always recruiting new members. I never really experienced it, but I know people who have and who say that it's great.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs, but they are not really promoted or encouraged.

    Bang for the buck

For the low, low tuition it charges, UTEP is a great choice of school. The most I ever paid was around $4,000 for 19 credit hours, which is really inexpensive.

    What to do for fun

There are always student and school activities to choose from, whether it be Minerpalooza or a play at the Union Dinner Theater, or a Miners football or basketball game.

    Food and Dining

The food is okay, and the selection is varied, but UTEP would really benefit from having more healthy options for food and drink. You basically have Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Quiznos, Einstein Bros Bagels, and stuff like that to choose from.

    Dorm Life

I honestly don't know anything about the dorms here.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are not particularly challenging, though they usually do cover all of the required material.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to Minerpalooza! It's super fun and you meet lots of other new students. Also, make friends in your classes; having people you can count on for team work is essential.

    In three sentences

UTEP is a great school for engineering and business majors. The classes almost always cover all of the material, although sometimes lacking thoroughness. Still though, you learn a lot and the student environment is very involved; there are always activities to attend and things to do.
