Categories Comments Campus Safety Coast Guard Police and private security firm. Very safe.
Greek Life Non-existent. But the barracks is pretty much like a big frat house. Without the parties.
Clubs and Activities Lots of clubs and activities, but it's hard to keep up with such a busy military and academic schedule.
Great for these types of students Students who want to be in the military and are academically driven, or students who want or need a structured environment to succeed.
Bang for the buck No tution, no student loans, free meals, guaranteed job for 5 years afterwards.
What to do for fun Hanging out with friends, both in and out of the barracks. There isn't much to do in New London, so spending time with your friends is the best way to pass the time.
Food and Dining The food served in the Academy wardroom is decent, and when you realize it's free, it becomes even better. However, eating the same place gets old every now and then, so there are several good restaurants that deliver to the Academy.
Dorm Life Pros: You live with everyone. Cons: You live with everyone. There are only 1000 students here, so you tend to recognize a lot of faces. We are a military institution, so there are room standards that are upheld.
Academic Rigor Extremely structured school days, combined with military trainings.
Tips for prospective students Talk to any Coast Guard Officer or current Coast Guard Academy Cadet to get a real idea of what life's going to be like. Apply to the USCGA AIM Summer Program to have a week of Coast Guard Academy Basic Training.
In three sentences While USCGA is physically, emotionally and mentally draining, it is beyond a doubt one of the most rewarding experiences in a lifetime. Not for the faint of heart, but for those who are determined to make more of themselves.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Perfect for students who love the water and a very structured lifestyle. After graduation, you have the chance to become a commanding officer aboard a CG vessel.

Categories Comments Food and Dining The criteria food in the Ward Room is really good. There's always plenty of food at no charge. There's always a cereal, yogurt, salad, and juice bar available. There's something for everyone!
Dorm Life All students live in one dorm room building, Chase hall. Male rooms and Females rooms are integrated. Everyone is close by and there are peer tutors available for extra help. The academy has a close family feel between all students.
Academic Rigor The work load at the Academy is extremely tough. The Academy offers every student a bachelors of science degree, so everyone takes the same physics, chemistry, and math courses. Each semester is at least 16 credits and everyone graduates in 4 years.
Tips for prospective students To get into the Coast guard academy students must be physically fit. Students should join a sports team and be involved in as many extracurricular activities as possible, such as boy scouts, girl scouts, clubs, student council and police explorers. Leadership positions also really help you get into the academy. Endeavor to be a captain of a sports team or president of a club.
In three sentences The Coast Guard Academy is an institute for leadership. This is no ordinary college. The primary mission is to develop young leaders into mentally tough, physically fit and academically strong officers in the Coast Guard.
