Great for these types of students

SUNY Albany is well known for Business, nano technology and the sciences but also offers theatre, music, anthropology, globalization (very new), many different languages, Linguistics, and practically any major you can think of. The campus is also very diverse and has people from many different countries and states and is almost 50/50 between men and women.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to learn and have fun, Albany is where to be. We're only a couple hours from NYC. The only thing you really do need to know is to bring fans for the summer and extra warm clothes and blankets for the winter because it gets incredible cold! Rain boots are a good investment as well. I thought I might be able to get away with not getting a pair but I definitely regretted it after all the rain and snow accumulation.

    Bang for the buck

It's totally worth going to a SUNY school at pratically a fifth of the price of private colleges where you learn the same material as private schools and have similar learning styles where the teachers are amazing and absolutely helpful. Since it is a SUNY you know they aren't getting the best pay so obviously the teachers want to be there for you and to help you!

    Am enjoying being here

It's a great school with great people, even people from all over the world.

    Am learning a lot

Classes are a bit more difficult than high school, but you always learn something new in at least one class along with meeting new people.

Great for these types of students

Any one going for the sciences, political sciences, liberal arts, business, and almost anything else. It's a big school so it has most majors. Their undergrad science is good and the city gives you intern/research opportunities. And for political sciences, Albany is the capital region and has many government offices, buildings, and events. It has all sorts of personalities so I can't say what kind of people it would be good for. Those with high academic standing from high school would do well to join the honors college. It gives them the opportunity to get some wonderful classes, good housing, and other bonuses such as tickets to the school's preforming arts shows and the ability to borrow a book from the library for a full semester.

    Tips for prospective students

Yes, it has a party reputation. No, you don't have to do that. There are lots of people to meet, and in general, I found you just have to reach out a little to start up a good conversation. JOIN THE CLUBS! I never thought I would like fencing until I went to the first practice and loved it. Now I am going with the club to competitions in other schools. And I never pictured I could learn salsa dancing as well. Just keep an open mind and never give up. You can learn a lot if you're willing to see it.

    Bang for the buck

For all they do, and compared to all the other schools, YES! It has one of the best prices and you get a lot back. Private schools can nickle and dime you to death it seems. But since it is state funded, things are kept pretty nice, there are many facilities at your reach, and you are in a good location for research.

    Am enjoying being here

Albany is great because you are in a city so many things are so near by. But the campus is separate enough so you don't feel like you're crowded in a city. I joined several clubs which I never pictured myself ever doing and found a number of amazing people to hang out with. To be honest, I didn't want to come to UA at first. I hated the idea. Until one time I visited and I felt comfortable with the place. Now I coming here was one of the best choices I have ever made.

    Am learning a lot

I'm learning so much in the books and so much more outside of it! Take advantage of your teacher's office hours, join some clubs, meet people and have fun. The honors courses are exceptional and I can't believe how much my process of thinking has changed. It's a different experience for everyone. Mine has been amazing. You just have to go forward and make it your own.

Great for these types of students

Outgoing students, and kids that are willing to integrate themselves in different activities in terms of clubs and frats. Multitaskers; meaning being able to study and relax and then watch the big basketball game with friends and doing volunteer work after at Albany Med. Big achievers: Good grades are a must! One must work hard to achieve here, and although UAlbany was a big party school some years ago, it is important to have a sense of balance between fun and studies. International students: Business college is a plus. Health majors and science majors: Medical school and transition to graduate school is easy here, especially when you have the grades to get into special programs such as 2+2 law and 6 year PT programs. So be alert, and you'll be achieving those dreams in the end. Don't give up!

    Tips for prospective students

Weather tips: Albany has two extremes in terms of weather. Remember Albany is COLD in the winter. Why? Because it is in the North, near Canada. Start bringing heavy winter jackets starting from October. April and May is the season for decent to humid weather conditions. It can get HOT. Do not expect snow days, unless the amount of snowfall accumulated is more than 6 inches or icy conditions occur. Be aware that roommates may not always be that friendly in the beginning. Do not succumb to peer pressure or group activities that do not engage your personality, you'll only hurt yourself in the end.

    Bang for the buck

In-state tuition is always cheaper than out of state. An out of state undergraduate student will have to pay annually for room fees, tuition, and university fees: $ 24,886. An instate student will have to pay: $16,986 annually. These numbers are from (http://www.albany.edu/studentaccounts/charges.htm) and remember this is before financial aid, TAP, and scholarships. In terms of personal finance, keep track of how much money you spend on credit cards, even if your hitting the local Walmart, because money can run out quickly.

    Am enjoying being here

Since Albany is in the city and is the capital of New York, there are tons of things to do. There are performing arts centers where concerts take place (The Egg, Palace Theatre, Linda's) and sometimes UA students can grab great discounts and free bus rides (CDTA transport) to get there. In terms of sightseeing, there are museums and the state department offices to see. There are also group, club, and frat activities students can do if they choose to join. Restaurants and great eats are also around Albany for the hungry diner.

    Am learning a lot

SUNY Albany is a great place to learn. There are more than 100 majors available. International students are attracted to the business majors available and there are great programs available to enter. Some examples of programs a Ualbany student could get into (with the appropriate GPA and course of study) are the 2+2 law program, the Physician Assistant Program, Dental, Physical Therapy and the school's association with Albany Medical College. In terms of classroom comfort, for a large institution, UA is a pretty comfortable settings. Warning here though: most freshmen with intended majors are put into large lecture halls with other students of the same.similar major, so be aware that the lecture halls could be crowded. It is competitive, so try your best to be top dog and always make sure you show yourselves to the teachers, because you don't want to be ignored in a crowd of 100-300 students.

Great for these types of students

I believe that this school is fantastic for people that may not necessarily know what they want to do yet. There are majors and minors in just about everything you can think of. You can even come here as a Pre-health or Pre-law student. There isn't much here that you can't do. And it is a lot cheaper than most other schools so if you want a great education for less monet and a lot of options SUNY Albany is the place to go. Not to mention the fact that there are over 200 clubs and organizations on campus so if you are the kind of person who likes to get involved and keep yourself busy you will always have something to do and you would be surprised at some of the clubs that we have here. Things you would never even think of. Suny Albany is for people that are willing to integrate themselves into a very diverse place and work hard to get where they want.

    Tips for prospective students

I suggest that if you are going to apply that you have more than 2 recommendation letters, a great personal essay and decent SAT scores. I applied for early acceptance and I had 6 recommendation letters. 3 personal and 3 professional. I believe that the more things that are said good about you by other people the better the chances are that they will see you for something other than just your GPA.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to other school's that I looked at this one was my best option financially. Out of state tuition is only a little over 24,000 and in state tuition is a little over 17,000 which is not that much in comparison to other schools. Not to mention the fact that you are getting the same, if not a better education than a private school for a fraction of the price. The only reason private schools charge so much is because they have smaller amounts of people in classrooms. Even though there may be 500 people in a class at a time you are still getting a fantastic education if you pay attention and do what needs to get done.

    Am enjoying being here

There are over 18,000 undergraduate students which makes for a very diverse living environment. I love being around this many different kinds of people and if you enjoy a good time and diversity then I suggest SUNY Albany. There is never a dull moment whether it be good or bad and it's always fun.

    Am learning a lot

This school in phenomenal in it's academics. There are so many options and you could choose to learn about just about anything. When I chose this school I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted to do and they just had so many learning opportunities that I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Now I have fantastic teacher's and have learned so much from them since I have been here I know what I want to do. Not to mention the advisors that we have are amazing and they are extremely helpful!

Great for these types of students

For students who don't mind being a number. There are multiple lecture halls that are big enough to hold five hundred students. You can easily go in and out unnoticed. At the same time, in these classes I have seen professors address students by their name, or go out of their way to say hello to me. While there are large classes, there are small classes as well, so you have a chance to get to know your professors.

    Tips for prospective students

Enter with an open mind. UA was honestly my last choice, and that's because I had my eye on art schools in the city. Going in I was expecting for it to be awful, but I quickly found that I liked the school, and I often bring friends to the campus to give them a tour.

    Bang for the buck

I was looking at a couple of private schools that were very expensive. What made the difference was the price of UA and the financial aid they offered. The financial aid they gave me exceeded the tuition amount, and so I have enough money to pay for books and gas. I don't know anyone who is really struggling to pay for their education there. I have found that for the price, the education is a great deal.

    Am enjoying being here

At first glance, the campus looks dreary and unwelcoming. Keep in mind it is the second largest cement building in the United States. But it grew on me quickly. During the warmer times there are four fountains and nice gardens that brighten things up. I have yet to run through or swim in the fountains; but its on my list. I commute, so I can not comment on the dorms, but I have seen worse from more expensive schools. And the dorms are not far from the Podium (main rectangle of buildings).

    Am learning a lot

The classes I have taken so far have been good. Everything varies based on the professor, as it would at any college or university. Some professors are harder than others, but either way, I feel good with the information I am receiving.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students that are into politics, business, criminal justice, education, social welfare, and engineering. The University holds high rankings in all these fields and #1 in Nanoscale Engineering. Also, if you're looking for a place with a lot of school spirit, this is the place. Great Dane pride is everywhere and you will always see purple and gold (school's colors) everywhere. If you are a student that wants to major in French, Italian, Russian, or Theater, I would recommend you do your research and make sure you still want to come here. Funding issues could lead to the removal of these departments from campus

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! It's a great way to get to know people on campus. College isn't all about grades, it's also about networking. A strong GPA might catch an employers attention, but a friendship or recommendation can land the deal. If you don't like any clubs on campus, you could start your own free of charge, and receive funding from the Student Association (student government). The most important tip I could give incoming students; never go downtown alone. Although SUNY Albany is located in a safe neighborhood, the downtown area is notorious for crimes. On weekends, many frats/sororities and other students have parties downtown. Criminals are outside around these times specifically looking for people walking alone. Don't make yourself look like an easy target. If you do go out, don't take any cups from any strangers and don't drink the jungle juice! Oh, I almost forgot! Always stay in contact with your advisor! The earlier you register, the better your classes!

    Bang for the buck

The University costs about $20,000 right now. It's pretty cheap considering the rankings and reviews this school gets on public policy, business, social welfare, criminal justice, engineering, and education. It has a partnership with the NYS Legislature for internships as well. Although it may seem cheap now, tuition may go up in the near future. Funding is a major problem in the SUNY system now and programs have been cut (theater, French, Italian). It all depends on what you want to major/minor in. Each quad contains 8 residence halls. Each residence hall is equipped with washing machines and dryers. They are all free of charge. Also, the tower of each quad has a free gym for whoever wants to avoid the freshmen 15! Other expenses Transportation here was a little weird for me. If you want to take a bus somewhere, it's free. Whether it's a shuttle or public transportation, uAlbany students get on for free. Cab rides are $7 is you're alone, $4 each for 2-3 people, and $3 for 4 or more. Food here is cheap.... well pizza is cheap. A slice of pizza in the City of Albany can range from $1-$2, but don't worry, the quality is still there. There is a Wal-Mart conveniently located around campus if you need to buy...well they sell everything. They're open 24hrs on weekdays!

    Am enjoying being here

I do enjoy being here. Whether you wanna play football, have a debate, or listen to some live music, there is always something to do after class. The student government funds over 200 groups on campus. There are other colleges in Albany area too (St. Rose, and Siena). This is a great college town. If you wanna go downtown with a group of your friends to find a good movie, eat, or party, there is always something going on.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a lot both in the classroom and outside of it. In the classroom, information was thrown at me twice as fast than in high school. Outside of it, you get to learn how to manage your own money, setting up your personal schedule (this is a big one!), how to do your laundry, etc. There are also a lot of internships and academic support on and off campus. Tutors are free, and there are many offices that can review research, or other assignments for you. The University Library also offers a program to guide you step by step on your research projects.

SUNY Albany is great for all sorts of students. There's something to do for everyone!

    Tips for prospective students

Stay active, do your schoolwork, and make lots of friends. Don't forget to be you, this can't be said enough.

    Bang for the buck

SUNY Albany is a top notch school when it comes to this category. Tuition is around 16-18,000 plus books and other expenses. It's way less than other private schools in New York and other states. However, it's more expensive for out-of-state students.

    Am enjoying being here

I'm an honors student so I live on a great dorm, I have some small classes, and I live with other honors students so we stick together in our classes and activities. It's great! If you get accepted into the honors college, or in any other special program like EOP, or Project Renaissance, you should definitely join. There are SO many clubs to join ranging from cultural groups to fencing to laser tag and pre-medicine. They help you network with other students and you can gain lots of friends with similar attributes to you. I strongly encourage all student to join at least one or two clubs.

    Am learning a lot

Some of the classes are interesting and you will learn a diverse amount of information from a wide range of topics like cultural diversity, global and cross-cultural studies, etc.

Great for these types of students

SUNY albany is great for almost all majors. It has strong Business, Biology, Psychology, English and History programs. There's plenty of classes for everyone. Just know the school is pretty big, which is perfect for social butterflies.

    Tips for prospective students

I know i was nervous when i first moved 150 miles away from home to come to Albany. Just relax and have fun. There are so many people here and communities that want to welcome you, so let them. The campus is pretty diverse, so there is someone for everyone.

    Bang for the buck

it honestly depends if you are commuting or live on campus. The academics are definitely worth it, but i'm not so sure the food and dorm rooms are exactly worth the money.

    Am enjoying being here

I have made so many new and amazing friends. The campus is pretty, especially in the fall.

    Am learning a lot

I have learned a lot from the last 2 years. Classes are usually at a medium level, so they can be hard at times, especially when you don't know your strengths yet. Most professors are willing to help, in case you don't understand work.

    Am enjoying being here

It is enjoyable here. There are things to do. I am fine with not going to parties because they are not as amazing as one might expect (so I hear).

    Am learning a lot

I certainly am. I am a Psychology Major and I am learning a lot, depending on the professor.

Great for these types of students

The campus is really great for most students who are hard working, committed, likes a good challenge, likes diversity, wants to meet new people, likes to have fun, doesn't mind the big campus and student population.

    Tips for prospective students

Manage your time efficiently; the work piles up the most around midterms, breaks and finals. Take advantage of the library and its librarians. Get to know your professors and establish a relationship with them as it will definitely help you in and out of the classroom. Make sure to keep in touch with your adviser; they are very helpful in managing your classes and credits for graduation and/or transfer. They'll help you out with anything you ask them, or at least point you in the right direction! STUDY! You may have gotten by in high school by barely studying, or not studying... but in college, if you don't study, you'll fail. Do Not Procrastinate. Having trouble making friends? Join a club or get involved with some of the activities the school has to offer! Parking is a big pain. Make sure to arrive on campus (if you commute) about 15-20 minutes before your class begins. I guarantee you'll need it to find a parking spot and get to class on time.

    Bang for the buck

You definitely get your money's worth at UAlbany. There are so many things to do, clubs to join, volunteer activities, getting involved in the school newspaper, being on a sports team-- UAlbany offers a TON of stuff to make sure you get your money's worth. Nevertheless, if you need some extra help in paying tuition, try applying or financial aid. If that doesn't work, I suggest you apply for T.A.P. ONLY if you live in New York State. Almost everybody gets it; it's around $250 per semester.

    Am enjoying being here

I grew up in a small town high school; I then transferred to a small community college. I'll admit, I was afraid to transfer to UAlbany, whose population is an outstanding 19,000+ students. But I never looked back. The campus is beautiful all year round, even in the cold, winter months. There's a lot of things to do all year round, either on campus or off campus. UAlbany's campus is conveniently located a few minutes from the mall, gas stations, grocery stores, convenience stores, tanning salons, etc. I also like the diversity. There are so many different nationalities and such at the school, and we all mix together and nobody minds. There are definitely a lot of interesting people on campus that you'll come across and maybe even meet.

    Am learning a lot

I transferred in from a community college, and noticed the huge difference between there and UAlbany. Firstly, the teachers are more dedicated and committed to teaching you and you actually learn and retain more. Secondly, the difficulty starts with easy and gradually increases to hard so that you actually start learning things. Thirdly, if for some reason you are falling behind, the teachers are ALWAYS available by office hours and/or email; most of the teachers I've had are very personable and flexible, and will always try to help.

Great for these types of students

People who like to socialize but study too. SUNY Albany is a great school for people who are passionate about what they do and are willing to put the time and effort into it, no matter what it is.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep in mind what you want to get out of your college experience when choosing a college. SUNY Albany is a great school if you take it seriously and make the most out of it. With any college you choose, get involved and be active. That will really change your experience for the better.

    Bang for the buck

The school is a state school so its going to have one of the cheapest price tags out there. Not only does it have a good price though but also a good number of opportunities for a lot of the majors.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here. I've met some really great people that really made my college experience better. Some don't like the campus because it has a lot of concrete but I think it's nice. The campus has a couple fountains scattered around the campus that make it a great place to hang out.

    Am learning a lot

Like any school, if you apply yourself than you will get something out of the class. A lot of the courses you take are in lecture centers but not all. Classes that are in lecture centers just require extra self control because it's very easy to get distracted. I've also learned outside the classroom as well. Being away from home teaches you a lot about yourself and other useful information that you can only learn from your peers.

if you are a nys-resident is pretty damn cheap, especially if you aren't living on campus. when you add in the pricey accommodations, it can get a little iffy. you really need to budget your money wisely, like in all other things in life.

    What to do for fun

the school is very close to everything in the albany area. there are buses running almost all the time. crossgates mall and the two-story walmart are close. there is also the nys museum and assorted bars and clubs, some of which cater to those 18 and up as well as 21+.

    Food and Dining

while you might think that having a wendy's makes the school awesome, the food still follows below what other colleges should have. plus, who wants to eat fast food 24/7? not me. i do like some of the other options on campus though. they have a nice salad bar.

    Dorm Life

it depends on where you live because some of the rooms are nicer than others. in terms of the people, they are all pretty social and nice. there is also always alcohol and drugs available if you want them.

    Academic Rigor

it depends on the program, but some of these programs are very sub-par. the writing ability of incoming students is terrible. mine isn't very good but i end up putting the rest of the students to shame. when freshman students don't know how to write proper essays and do citations, there's a problem/

    Tips for prospective students

parking is terrible, be sure to only park in the right spot or they will fine you like crazy. be aware that in the parking lot, there isn't good lighting and they often don't plow it during snowstorms. also, you'll need a good 10 minutes or so to walk to class. this is a big university so don't think you'll be running into friends all the time, no matter how many people you know. oh and the towers pose a bit of a fire hazard, so avoid them if you are doing housing.

    In three sentences

suny albany is far too big and it sucks. don't bother going here unless you live nearby and can commute or you love to drink/party with various illegal substances. it can be good for graduate school (my sister attends for teaching) but if you are looking to excel at a good college, this might not be the one for you.

I feel very safe on campus. Despite it being an open campus, there is almost always security presence.

    Bang for the buck

Yes. It is worth every penny. I feel that the food should be better, and the rooms should be bigger for the prices.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of clubs downtown, but many people prefer to stay on campus where big events are held, or people have small gatherings in their dorms.

    Food and Dining

Chartwells is not the greatest, but not terrible when it is your only option. I prefer to go to the Campus Center because there is a variety of options, from Wendy's to Haagen Dazs, Olo Sushi, Rosso Verde, and Tim Hortons.

    Dorm Life

The rooms could be bigger, and it could get very cramped and uncomfortable, but overall, they are not bad.

    Academic Rigor

Just like every other school, you have to work hard to get good grades. The professors here genuinely care about the quality of work that is given to them, and students should never underestimate their professor's potential of grading them rigorously.

    Tips for prospective students

Come in with a positive attitude. The campus can get large and frustrating at times, but once you get the hang of things, you will be very appreciative of all the resources that SUNY Albany has to offer.

    In three sentences

SUNY Albany is a very diverse, welcoming campus. There is a large variety of organizations to join, and it is very easy to get involved. It offers its students great chances to advance socially, and challenges students academically.

    Campus Safety

Safe for the most part. Because it's Albany there are risks. Campus security responds quickly and tries to help.

    Clubs and Activities

    Bang for the buck

For my undergraduate studies I received grants and scholarships because I had a good academic standing and severe financial need. Going back to take one class cost me almost half of one semesters tuition. On it's own, not worth it.

    What to do for fun

I would say check out the theatre department, they put on great shows. It's been downgraded to a minor now, so not exactly sure what's going to happen. Otherwise I wasn't on campus much.

    Food and Dining

Meals plans, I can't speak to, never had one. In the campus center there is a Wendy's, soup place, salad place and coffee shop. All are okay.

    Academic Rigor

As long as you study hard and do all of you assignments, you won't have a problem. Ask other students about professors before you sign up for the course. There are some good ones and some really bad ones.

    Tips for prospective students

    Food and Dining

The food is very terrible, so i usually eat at the campus center and ask for a sandwich. Too bad future students wont be able to do that, because so much is being cut back.

    Dorm Life

I am currently in a triple and it is really bad, one of my roommates is very dirty and is always sleeping. Also the space is so limited and it is hard to breath is such a small room.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are very intense and it is hard paying attention with four hundred other students talking behind you. But as your progress throughout the years, the classes get smaller and are more understanding.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you know what you are getting into. Don't come to this school simply for the name, make sure they offer your majors and minors.

    In three sentences

SUNY at Albany does not offer the majors I'd would love to consider, yet they are on point with the courses they do offer. We have our own University Police and Emergency phones in which we can call them and they will be at our location in less than 5 minutes. This campus is very safe considering how big it is.

Some traditions they have are fraternity/sorority probates where the new brothers or sisters are crossed over and are officially a part of it. We also have Danes after Dark where they have games and movie nights in the Campus Center and big events like the football and basketball games.

    Bang for the buck

SUNY Albany is overall a good choice when it comes to price. You get to meet a lot of new people and gain new experiences. They also have a lot of opportunities for networking and internships so you're ultimately getting your money back in the end. They also have programs like EOP where if you're eligible, you would only be paying a few thousand dollars!

    What to do for fun

There is a mall literally 5-10min away by bus as well as a wal-mart to go shopping. There are always interesting events, plays, and games going on. There are also house parties every weekend, even on Thursday so if you enjoy that, there's that too. There's also a museum downtown so if you're the artsy type, that's for you.

    Food and Dining

The food in the dining halls are usually always repetitive and you get tired of it after a while(chicken and fries). There are different meal plans that you can choose from but be wise when it comes to the plan you choose. You also get something called a mealtrade which is essentially a free swipe for a meal in their little cafes.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are pretty small;the most common is a double and if you want a single, they are harder to get and cost a lot more. You might also be tripled up which creates an even tighter space. There is also a downtown quad in which you would have to take a bus. So depending on your lottery number it might or might not work out in your favor.

    Academic Rigor

Most of the classes are very difficult and you will need to learn to multitask. Especially if you are a bio major or criminal justice major, you have to be very dedicated. There are some easy A's though such as Business Law or Myths of the Greek World.

    Tips for prospective students

This school is known for being a party school so if you are strictly about grades, you might want to think twice before you enroll. The classes are for the most part difficult but if you stay on top of it, you should be fine. Once you come here, its up to you that you are a name and not just a number.

    In three sentences

The campus and most classes are very big so you could get lost in the shuffle. The food isn't the best especially if you aren't a fan of chicken and french fries. This university is very good if you're looking to go into medicine, law, or business.

Every large college has safety risks. Personally i find safety on this campus to be very good.

Like i said this is a party school so there are plenty of places to be on a friday or saturday night. If you arent into partying then you can go to the mall or near by parks. There are sport fields available at all times so you can play with your friends.

    Food and Dining

despite what other people said, i found the food to be quite good. It does get old quickly though. Fast food places such as Chinese and pizza always have a deal for students.

    Dorm Life

This all depends on where you live. If you are stuck in a triple, things could get tough. Apartment style dorms are the best in my opinion.

    What to do for fun

SUNY at Albany is not like any other environment. There are a number of activities to engage in to better your time.

    Food and Dining

The food is what you would expect of colleges. Some of you may love it while others hate it. Personally I was in indifferent. SUNY at Albany offers an adequate selection of foods offered in various dining halls around campus. You don't truly understand the idea of the Freshman fifteen until you are presented with so many possibilities.

    Dorm Life

It's imperative as a freshman to live on campus. Unless you are a social butterfly or already involved in a number of extra curricular activities you will not create the meaningful relationships you may expect. Your best friends in college will be those you live with during your early years at college. SUNY at Albany has a great dorm structure that encourages you to meet people with similar interests.

    Academic Rigor

A healthy social and academic balance is important for all college students. That being said, expect to make sacrifices. Grades come first and foremost and time will need to be spent studying and applying yourself. The better you do, the better you will feel.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not fall the victim to the stresses of college applications. It's not worth starting the journey on the wrong foot. Just because you didn't score the highest on the SAT or take 3 AP courses does not put you at the bottom of the totem pole. SUNY at Albany is here to help you, not criticize you.

    In three sentences

SUNY at Albany balances the best of both worlds. The social experience you want and the academia you expect. If you make college all about grades you will not fully enjoy all that SUNY Albany has to offer.

SUNY at Albany is known to be one of the top party schools in the U.S! Therefore, when the weekend comes and you feel like releasing stress, partying downtown or even in the Campus Ballroom is usually an option. Or if your not much of a party person, you can go downtown and play bowling, watch a movie or play glow in the dark golf at Crossgates Mall.

    Food and Dining

The food on campus is good sometimes. But usually it depends on the dining hall you attend. Overall, the food is provided by Chartwells which is not always the best but it's edible. The campus center has some select courses like Wendy's, Zepps, and even a Soup Kitchen just to name a few.

    Dorm Life

The University has several options for housing. From standard singles to enhanced doubles. You do have a choice to pick your roommate or suite mates that u prefer to live with. There are four quads and they are each unique in there own way, Indian, State, Colonial, and Dutch Quad.

    Academic Rigor

Lecture halls are huge and if you want to do well and exceed, sit in the front. For smaller classrooms, some are taught by grad students and teaching assistants. From experience they not only care more about the students, they are more willing to spend extra time to help you with any problems.

    Tips for prospective students

Be attentive and it's always better to read ahead for lectures. That way you will most likely understand what is going on and have questions to ask in the future. Going to office hours and familiarizing yourself with your professor is always beneficial in larger classes. Also, apply to scholarships. You can't go wrong!

    In three sentences

SUNY at Albany is a very great University as far as academics and graduation rates. It offers so many different opportunities for individuals who attend it. The campus is very diverse and has people from many different countries and states, which makes you a well-rounded individual to new backgrounds.

Fountain day is awesome but it won't be reinstated for a few years because of construction but its great. The students celebrate spring starting by the huge fountain in the center of the podium being turned on.

    Bang for the buck

It is a state school so it is cheap compared to a lot of private schools. However, books are obviously expensive, meal plans, transportation it can get expensive.

    What to do for fun

There is a plethora of clubs that appeal to everyone ranging from paint balling, to mock trial, to club sports. Going to D1 sport events are also very fun.

    Food and Dining

The options in the campus center are great. There is Wendy's, a new Mexican place, an Italian place, and sub and salad place. There is quite a variety. However, dining hall food is dining hall food, it is OK.

    Dorm Life

Indian quad freshman year 100%. The rooms are bigger than State quad. Dutch and Colonial are upperclassmen quads with bigger common rooms but smaller dorm rooms. The apartments are BEAUTIFUL, especially empire commons. They just built Liberty and have the older apartment complex Freedom, all located on campus.

    Academic Rigor

It depends on your major. Communications majors usually have easier classes while the business and science majors tend to have more difficult classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Plan travel ahead; since there are a lot of students who attend the school buses and trains tend to fill up quickly before breaks. However, because there are so many students, there are numerous transportation options straight from the school. Get as many college credits as you can in high school because it gives you priority in housing and scheduling which is VERY important.

There are so many activities to choose from at UAlbany. There will never be a time where you have nothing to do. From sports and athletics to arts and music there is always an activity to take part in.

    Food and Dining

I love the food! There are so many places to choose from here. I am a vegetarian, and there are still so many options for me to choose from!

    Dorm Life

The dorms are not a bad deal. Most of the dorms at other schools were a lot smaller. Here ,even though it was not at close to what I am used to, they seemed more comfortable and roomy.

    Academic Rigor

At UAlbany I feel as though I will be challenged enough to bring out the best of my work and abilities.

    Tips for prospective students

If you do not mind a large campus with an extremely diverse group of students UAlbany is a great choice.

Amazing. Blue lights with emergency phones every so many feet, police patrolling, and always quick to help resolve issues. My roommate had some issues this past semester and they helped me whole-heartedly. UA offers plenty of self-defense courses and rape prevention seminars.

    Greek Life

Not personal affiliated but there are massive amounts of sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

Anything you want - it's here.

Great for these types of students

Social, involved, academically driven. Great language, psychology, and Women's studies programs.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are tons! We have an underground tunnel system which is awesome for days with crappy weather; every Friday there are Danes After Dark activities and School Spirit events; the school frequently hosts concerts with popular artists (LMFAO came earlier last year), speeches with popular political and inspurational leaders, etc.

    Bang for the buck

UA is relatively cheap compared to most New York schools and other universities in general. I'm out of state tuition so it's about $26k for me, but UA is great with loans and grants. In-state should be around $20k. It's also in a booming environment with dozens of major outlets and the campus itself is so beautiful and naturey. The classes are plentiful, diverse, and challenging; most professors are well-educated, stimulating, and helpful; and the campus is uncomplicated and within close proximity to everything around.

    What to do for fun

Everything. You can join a hundred different clubs, get a work-study or mall job, go to the movies and a mall just a bus ride away, go downtown to check out the night scene, and become RAs/TAs/Research Assistants/teach courses as undergraduate students. Mostly it's fun to bond with local residents and relax.

    Food and Dining

It's hard to find food as a vegan. Vegetarians and normal eaters will be 110% fine. Vegans - go to Colonial and Dutch. And most importantly for ANYONE, see one of the dietiscians! They provided me a full length list of all the meals and ingredients on all quads that would be safe for me to eat. They also provide this help with celiacs, diabetes, kosher/halal diets, etc. USE your resources! (Besides, there is a health food store not too far)

    Dorm Life

I'm a bit biased because my freshman experience on State Quad Eastman Tower was awful. Many of my classmates in the building were immature and we frequently had to evacuate at all times of the night for false fire alarms. But many of the dorm areas are spacious and enviting as long as you put personal touches in it. Clean, clean, clean.

    Academic Rigor

Many of my professors are doctorate level and many have been published authors, whether the books be educational or personal. The class room environments and sizes vary and are always positive, thought-provoking environments. The guidance counselors are also very accomodating and work extensively with your schedule and you also have the freedom to rearrange your own classes. I'm currently a double major and double minor and no many universties allow that.

    Tips for prospective students

    - Don't be afraid to ask questions. UA offers a lot of diversity and accomodates people of all diets, ethnicities, lifestyles, interests, and career tracks - but some things won't jump off of the website at you. So ask questions and find out if UA is the best for you. - They have a ridiculous amount of extracurriculars so you can pretty much find whatever you're interested in on campus - or you can create it yourself! - They have a pretty extensive bus system that I recommend you explore. As a vegan it was great to roam down Central Ave and discover a health food store two minutes away.

    In three sentences

UA is a positive, diverse, invigorating environment for any person passionate about their education. It is a great place to meet new people, get involved in issues that make a difference, and continue the path of academic success. I chose to leave my state and drive five hours to come here - enough said!

    Food and Dining

Two words for the dining halls... JAIL FOOD! Haha. If you want the closest thing to real food, do not hesitate to go straight to Campus Center!

    Dorm Life

Some dorms are tough to tolerate when you do take your education seriously! Walls are basically paper there and you hear almost everything. Chances are, if your suitemates are not hollering until 4 in the morning, then somebody else is.

    Academic Rigor

Like I said, it gets a tough but there are so many services available. Most subject have tutoring rooms or groups so do not be afraid to use them!

    Tips for prospective students

If you are having trouble in any class, do not be afraid to meet your professor, teacher aid and fellow students! Nine times out of ten, if you are not understanding something, more than half of the class is with you!

We have a University Police Department and blue lights. For the most part we don't have anything dangerous happening on campus but because it is a public campus we have to be careful and aware of our surroundings.

    Greek Life

Greek life on campus is amazing. We have 7/9 of the original Divine Nine with an addition to other greek groups and social fellowships.

    Clubs and Activities

In the beginning of every new fall semester UA has a candle lighting ceremony to welcome to freshmen and wish the best for the returning students.

    Bang for the buck

The parties are mostly good, so it doesn't feel like a waste of money.

    What to do for fun

For fun, I hang out with my friends mostly. We sometimes walk around campus because it's so big we still have yet to see the whole things. We go to parties. We have movie nights. We go to the mall. The Albany area is a fairly large one so it's easy to find something to do.

    Food and Dining

There's no food like a home cooked meal, but UA has a great variety. Everyone gets tired of dining hall food eventually but our campus center has different fast food restaurants that students can eat from with their munch money or meal trades just in case dining hall food isn't cutting it.

    Dorm Life

Dorm Life for most people at SUNY Albany is mostly a good experience. Of course like any other college, there are some roommate matches that just don't work out, but UA makes it their business to put a stop to those kind of problems before they get too far along by swapping. The rooms are a fair size and most are two people to a room so you are guaranteed your own space.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor at SUNY Albany is a great one. There are so many different kind of classes and different professors that even if you don't quite understand the way the teachings of one professor there is another professor who teaches the same course that you will like. It's so diverse in our classrooms and outside that I can not see anyone not fitting in.

    Tips for prospective students

For any students considering UA, they should make sure their high school GPA is a good one and study hard for the SATS. Also, for those who have got in but have yet to actually be on campus STAY FOCUSED. It is hard to lose sight of what you came to college for. Keep your grades high and your confidence in yourself higher.

    In three sentences

University at Albany is a very large campus filled with many different students and professors with many different identities. With the great education system they have lined up and the hundreds of student groups it's difficult to come into UA and NOT fit in. SUNY Albany main focus is to push their students to challenge themselves in a way that no one else could.

Not every residence hall has everything you need, but you can certainly go next door to another one and you will be assisted.

    Academic Rigor

Your grade heavily depends on how well you understand the material.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let the current construction fool you. A campus that isn't doing any construction isn't bettering their school environment. Our new school of business is almost finished!

    In three sentences

SUNY at Albany is like a home away from home for kids who came from urban cities. For kids that live in suburbs, you'll get your taste on the Albany Podium concrete.

    Campus Safety

There are quite a few incidents of crime on the campus that can be easily minimized by not leaving your dorm door unlocked or leaving your things sitting unattended; however, UAlbany does also have emergency blue lights that if you hit a button/ pick up a phone it alerts the campus police to your location and that you're in trouble. When standing at one of these lights (it is rumored) that you can always see another one from you're position just in case.

    Greek Life

I have no idea in terms of Greek Life.

    Clubs and Activities

Student Association does a lot in creating activities for it's students. They tend to host concerts (All American Rejects was there one year), poetry slams, comedy nights, etc. There is an abundance of student clubs that you're bound to find one that you're interested in.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Fountain Day is a strong tradition and no parents or non-UAlbany students are allowed. It is a lot of fun and is incredibly festive. There are games, music, food, etc.

    What to do for fun

There was quite a lot of things to do in the surrounding area which is a quick bus ride away. As for on campus there are a lot of student clubs which host a lot of fun activities. (I.E. Anime and Gaming club hosted video game sessions in the Campus Center) In addition Student Association plans concerts, and other activities on the weekends or weeknights.

    Food and Dining

The dining room food was okay, just like any other mass produced food. Their continental breakfast was, by far, the best! There are also a lot of take out places in the area that are willing to deliver to the campus which was incredibly nice.

    Dorm Life

Life on campus was , typically, nice. The dorms tended to be on the larger side and there was a lot on campus to do. Also, the dorm rooms have a common room so you can either hang out with your friends there or in your actual dorm room. Also, the dining halls were located incredibly close to your room so you didn't have to walk forever to get food.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on what academia you plan to go into, it can be difficult. I found the mathematics to be simple (also had tutoring readily available on a walk in basis), meanwhile the computer science and chemistry academia were difficult with no tutoring readily available.

    Tips for prospective students

Attend some of the classes before committing to this school to see if you like them. Also, ask all and any questions you might have to your student advisor if you do decide to go here. They are there to help you but I basically ended up being my own student advisor since my general and then specific degree advisor didn't really know what they were doing.

    In three sentences

SUNY has a great social life. However, it's class size is incredibly large. Also, don't expect one on one help from any of the professors.

    Dorm Life

Meet a lot of people, but the beds aren't comfortable.

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

The food and dining on campus in dining halls really depends on the night of the week, but the food options available in the Campus Center (which include Tim Hortons, Wendy's, Chopp'd, Rosso Verde, Zepps) are more varied.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life on campus leaves something to be desired, but they are great communites for building friendships. Upperclassman living spaces are nicer quality and provide more freedom/independence.

    Academic Rigor

Academic rigor is definitely dependent on the major you choose to enter and can be very competitive.

    Tips for prospective students

The most important tip I would give to perspective students is to make sure you get involved. There are so many different clubs and organizations that range in everything from Greek Life and volunteer/community service. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there!

Explore. Albany is a great city. You just have to go out there. You will find the good places but also the bad places. Only by exploring will you find out which place you enjoy yourself at.

    Food and Dining

Dining halls change their varieties daily but you'll start to see repeats over time. You also have Campus Center options but it is still not a variety that you would imagine.

    Dorm Life

On Campus dorms are alright. Nothing too special about them.

    Food and Dining

Everyone complains about the food at their school. The dining halls are alright, not awesome. Wrap stations are usually good and always the salad bar. The meals aren't always awesome.

    Dorm Life

The underclassmen dorms are small but a good atmosphere for meeting people. Each one has its own dinning hall which is convenient. Free Laundry is also a positive.

    Academic Rigor

Depends on the major, Albany is know for having some really great programs. others the focus is not on so much. Good education graduate school. Participates in some automatic acceptance programs for health majors.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're not good at teaching yourself this may not be the school for you. A lot of outside of class work needs to be done, especially for science majors.

It is OK. I got used to it. At the beginning, I really feel that there is nothing I can eat because of my eating habits. But now, it gets better. There are some choices in campus center if you do not want to eat in dining hall in each quad.

    Dorm Life

If your home is 50 miles away from college, you can live off the campus. Because the school worries about there are not enough dorm rooms for all student who apply housing, some of students will live in increased triple. I was the one but I moved out before thanksgiving. It is the horrible thing. If you do not want to sleep in the top of bunk bed, you need to share your closet with other. Most of freshmen live in state quad.

    Academic Rigor

I think it is OK. As long as you do your homework and take the test, it is not a big deal. They only require 2.00 GPA for graduating.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Apply your housing as soon as possible if you live in campus. There would be some increased triple which is three people in a double (you would not want it). 2. join a community if you want.

    Food and Dining

The food is not anything to brag about. It is a buffet style so you can usually find something you like to eat but that might be a little bit of a challenge other times. I am a very picky eater so that may be my problem.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are not the best but they are livable. There are corridoor and suite styled dorms. The corridor dorms are occupied by 1 to 3 people and have a bathroom in the hallway. The suite styled dorms have anywhere from 4 to 6 people and have a bathroom and a common room making the individual rooms a little bit smaller. I would recommend the suite styled rooms.

    Academic Rigor

    What to do for fun

There is a lot to do other than go to class. With a gym in every quad, the mall a bus ride away and the parties aren't all that bad.

    Food and Dining

I consider the food there to be slightly above average. Although the food is good, over the course of the year it can become redundant.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is very good. The only reason I didn't give it a higher rating is because due to construction many people are stuck in a triple which is a big pain to deal with.

Good teachers and academic resources. The campus isn't that pretty but they're making significant improvements. The course load is not that difficult to manage.

    Campus Safety

Campus Police presence is strong. The emergency light system is great. Never felt scared walking on campus in the dark by myself.

    Clubs and Activities

Plenty to do for everyone. See what to do for fun

Great for these types of students

Any student. UA has a huge variety of programs and is making a concentrated effort to improve on some of it main areas (Nanotech, Business, etc).

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We used to have Fountain Day - the first viable Spring weekend is like a mini-carnival and EVERYBODY gets into the fountain! (brr!) Cravings on Indian Quad - if you need a late night snack, this is a pretty well stocked little shop. Random fact: it's the second largest concrete structure in the US, beat out only by the Pentagon!

    Bang for the buck

In-state tuition with room & board for a full time student is $9,438. You have access to some great faculty from all over the world, many state of the art facilities, a large campus, and loads of opportunities for both work & play. You're in the capital of New York with a Law School, Med School & Pharmacy school right down the road.

    What to do for fun

Join clubs or intramural sports. Participate in on-campus events - there is ALWAYS something going on at UA. Go swim! We have an indoor pool and great athletic facilities. If you're into something and it doesn't exist in any form, talk to Res Life... there's a way to make nearly anything happen.

    Food and Dining

Not gourmet, but not canned crap either. There are so many options all over campus and even within each dining hall.

    Dorm Life

It's not pretty, but you get used to small rooms and tightly shared spaces. The dining halls are all good and the Res Life staff are pretty cool.

    Academic Rigor

Not every teacher is an easy A ... you have to work hard for most of your grades. Retrospectively, that's fantastic! It means I have to actually learn things and apply my brain! But the faculty is typically willing to help or point you in the right direction if you just go ask for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't expect to be spoon fed. As someone who went to Undergrad, left mid way and came back to finish a degree, I can honestly say you should make the most of your time in these years. And that doesn't mean party hard, drink a lot of join every club or frat/sorority. Be smart, pursue what interests you and work hard. You'll be able to party way harder just a bit later in life if you make your undergrad a successful experience.

    In three sentences

Any college is what you make of it. I've taken classes in several departments (including English, Business and Biology) and in each, I have found most of the Faculty and Staff to be helpful and amenable so long as you make the effort to reach out. With an Honors College, a state of the art Nano Department & various other programs that are designed to help students, this is actually an excellent facility for just a state school.

    Campus Safety

I must say campus safety is very good on this campus. We have our very own police UAPD, University at Albany Police Department. They are very good to responding to calls and making sure things run efficiently when it comes to safety measures. But unlike many other schools you there is no one checking who goes and comes from the dorms therefore if you have an id card to some one living in the building or if the door just happens to be open anyone can come in.

    Greek Life

Greek life is existent on this campus but also not prominent. You will walk around and find people representing their sororities or fraternities and not know who they are because you really don't see much activity from them on campus. There are some that are very recognizable on campus such as Groove Phi Groove, and the Kappa's.

    Clubs and Activities

At SUNY Albany you will find that there is a large range of clubs. At the beginning of fall semester there is block party where all the clubs gather at a set locations and the incoming freshman and transfer students check out the clubs that they are interested in. Also during the semesters the school hosts events where various artists come and perform. We also have a lot of guest speakers come to our school.

    Bang for the buck

I find that in attending SUNY Albany that it is one of the cheaper state schools and thus I feel the amount I'm paying is worth the education I get out of it. Whereas is some private schools students have to pay for laundry, I on the other hand have free laundry and I don't pay as much as they do.

    What to do for fun

There are many things that can be done for fun. There are many clubs to join and if you don't like the choices available then there is always the choice to start your own. Bowling in the area is really cheap and fun. If you want to catch a movie you can buy tickets on campus for around seven dollars and catch the movie at the theater in the mall. There is also ice-skating in the area. Joining a sport is also always an option. There are also intramural sports. These go on year round.

    Food and Dining

Also living on campus I find that many people including myself are not too happy with the food selections. Some dining halls are rated better than others but I find the opinions are usually bias. I meals usually consists of sandwiches, salads, and pizza. There is a Wendy's on campus that usually draws a crowd. It is also very hard to eat healthy because there is not a lot of options and you may find yourself eating a lot of the same things.

    Dorm Life

Living on campus has its pros and cons and depending where you live and whom you live with, you may have different experiences. Most common complaints I hear are about heat; that can be either too much or none. Some people get stuck with incompatible room mates which also tends to make there living experiences horrible. Another complaint would be the that the building leak when it rains if people leave there windows open in the towers. Which also leaves room for draft during the brutal winters.

    Academic Rigor

I find that the academic vigor varies within the majors but most often then not I find my course to be somewhat challenging. All classes I have taken have required me read before hand for each lecture. Exams are also challenging and require hours of studying.

    Tips for prospective students

Specific tips that I would have for prospective students would be to take advantage of office hours. They are very beneficial when you have questions and they allow for the professor to know you. Also another tip would be to practice time management. This is the downfall for many friends that I have and myself including. Coming to college one has to learn the how to balance both their academic and social life.

    In three sentences

Overall I would rank SUNY Albany as a seven on a scale of one to ten. This is mainly because being here I have had many good experiences. But I have also had some bad ones, especially with the CDTA buses

    What to do for fun

Depending on the weather , i like to do different stuff. On hot days , i like to go swimming or to hang out with some friends. On cold days , i like to stay inside and keep warm, but i want to try things like skiing.

    Food and Dining

I can not really say anything about this subject because i have never been there. I can tell you what i would like to expect. I hope they have wonderful food and i would like for the food to be very healthy. I would also like if they can tell us what they put inside the food because i am allergic to certain food.

    Dorm Life

I am not sure if i want to stay on campus because i like to be at home. I want to experience the dorm life and see how it is.

    Academic Rigor

I am a very smart student and i heard that this is a good school. I would like to see the academic scores.

I am a junior in high school and i am looking for colleges to go to. I created an account on Cappex and received a message saying the school wanted to know more information. I am willing to come and visit the campus when i can.

    Campus Safety

This campus is actually pretty safe. There are not many incidents of violence or incidents despite how spaced out the campus is. University police roam the campus routinely in case of anything.

    Greek Life

The fraternities and sororities are not seen on campus as much as they should be however they do host some great programs and evnet during the fall and spring semesters.

    Clubs and Activities

Clubs like R.A.C.E. are great for community service and outreach while there are many academic clubs for diverse students and there are numerous multicultural programs and clubs for students of all ethnicity.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for those students who are really social while it also can apply to those who simply want to focus strictly on their education due to the private study rooms.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

One tradition is fountain day where everyone on campus goes out to the fountain and just relaxes during the spring semester and also during the spring semester there are a lot of fraternity/sorority probate events and parties in random places on campus.

    Bang for the buck

There are a lot of opportunities academically and socially in clubs. Many people are in multiple organizations so knowing them pays off in the long run.

    What to do for fun

There are many events that go on campus like scavenger hunts and programs in the campus center. Also every weekend there is a campus center party and if you feel to go downtown and navigate the city buses are readily available.

    Food and Dining

I would say that the food is slightly above average at best. There are days where they do diversify and have specialties but on an average the food is just good enough to fill you up so you can be on your way to class.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are not really spectacular and housing is not really great at this time due to so much renovations going on. However the new renovated buildings on specific quads are very nice places to live in.

    Academic Rigor

As a freshman you take a variety of general education courses that vary in difficulty so some may be easy while some may be extremely rigorous depending on your major. However as you progress you definitely have to devote numerous hours to studying and really focus on your work because it can be a challenge.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely get involved in different clubs because this allows you to make new friends and important connections. Also take advantage of the tutoring sessions early if you know that your struggling or going to struggle in a class because the tutors here are truly helpful

    In three sentences

This school offers great education facilities and numerous professors that actually care about your education. What the University lacks in aesthetically pleasing characteristics it makes up for in a wide array of community service and networking opportunities. Attending this University can be a truly remarkable experience if you get involved in the different programs this school has to offer.

    Food and Dining

Chartwells is pretty good but we are changing providers in the summer. So in the Fall there would be a whole new dining company here

    Dorm Life

Crazy and fun. You meet so many different people and gain friends from all over.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on the class. Be prepare to read textbooks. You would get those classes that are based off of two exams. They suck but you have to deal with it.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not be afraid to apply here because of cost, grades, or SAT's there is always a way to make it here.

    What to do for fun

It ultimately depends on the crowd you choose to associate with.

    Food and Dining

Not very vegetarian/health friendly. Definitely need more options.

    Dorm Life

It really depends on where you are living. Dutch Quad is, by far, one of the best places to live (especially Ten Broeck Hall, OR Tappan Hall on State Quad which is newly renovated). I have never lived on Alumni, the downtown campus, but it seems like an inconvenient commute without a car because the buses can be a bit unreliable.

    Academic Rigor

I have been held to high standards by the professors within my department (East Asian Studies) and therefore can only speak on the behalf of that department in particular.

    Tips for prospective students

Study up! Have a general idea of what you want to pursue; it's okay to change your mind, but when choosing a college, make sure it has programs that suit and fulfill your interests.

    In three sentences

It's exceptional for the School of Business and for the East Asian Studies Department. Although it can be an on-going struggle to find one's comfort zone, I do not regret my decision to study here. I rate the University 7/10.

There are so many clubs that you can join. There are clubs that I personally didn't think existed. If you have any type of interest, chances are that you will find a club for it. And if you don't, you are given the opportunity to create one.

    What to do for fun

There is a huge mall in the area where you can go. There are a lot of shops there. There's also different things you can do, you just have to look for them. For example, this year I went laser tagging which I really enjoyed. There are a lot of things to do.

    Food and Dining

I must admit, the food in the dining halls are not the best and also tend to be repetitive but they have a campus center where you can find a greater variety of food and better food.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is really good, I really enjoyed. The best way to get the best out of it is to interact with your peers.

    Academic Rigor

I believe that the academic rigor depends on your major, therefore I don't know how to evaluate it.

    Tips for prospective students

I advise that you guys get involved in a lot of activities. That is the best way to get to meet people and to make this new place feel like home.

    Campus Safety

They have the blue lights all over campus. The previous year there was a dead body found in the Indian Quad parking lot and a gun threat on Colonial Quad... also, Downtown Albany is not a place you want to roam by yourself. Travel with a partner and you'll be fine.

    Greek Life

It's great to get involved in Greek life, just make sure you maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Great for these types of students

    Anyone

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Kegs and Eggs and Fountain Day were what made Albany such a fun school, but both of those are cancelled now. Lark Fest goes on in the nicer part of Downtown Albany and that's fun.

    Bang for the buck

Food isn't all that great. The school is putting more money towards construction and sports stadiums rather than to make the food edible.

    What to do for fun

Go to the mall, become active in Greek Life, Collins Circle (BEST hangout spot on campus, it's where people lay out and just hangout during the nice weather)

    Food and Dining

Chart wells is terrible, definitely make use of your meal trades. Order out as much as you can, but it is hard for broke college students. Try to be creative with the dining hall choices, bagels, smoothies and fruit may become your new favorite foods.

    Dorm Life

For freshman, there are 2 quads-Indian and State. Indian Quad has the best dining hall on campus and nicer rooms, while State is more of the 'fun' Quad where everyone hangs out. Rooms are either too hot or too cold, make sure you bring a fan.

    Academic Rigor

    Offers great academic opportunities.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let your freshman year get the best of you- while you want to have the 'freshman experience' of partying and not being told what to do, make sure it does not conflict with your studies.

    In three sentences

I am glad I chose to go to this school, UA offers many opportunities for their students. While I'm not a fan of lecture halls because it lacks student/professor intimacy, smaller classes offer more of a chance to react with your professor. This is a very good SUNY school.

There is a huge mall close by with a lot in it. There are many restaurants around. Downtown there are different places and activities tod o.

    Food and Dining

Unlimited meal swipes to the dining hall and 1 meal trade a day to the restaurants in the campus center! Food is pretty good for a college.

    Dorm Life

If you are in the low rises it is rough because of the communal bathrooms and lack of a common area. However, if you are in one of the towers you get your own bathroom with a common area for 3 rooms.

    Academic Rigor

Classes tend to include a lot of reading, especially at the beginning. If you desire harder classes try applying for the honors college.

    Tips for prospective students

It is a larger school, be prepared to be in many lecture centers especially in the beginning. Don't get distracted and stay studying.

Greek life is ok. There is hazing with some though, a little worse for the guys.

They are Collegiate level sports teams, intramural and club sports, many clubs for various things, and parties.

    Food and Dining

We used to get food from Chartwells that would have you on the toilet but this school year and for the rest to come we'll be getting our food from Sodexo, a company that gives food to prisoners. At least with Chartwells we had cooked food, even though most was processed.

    Dorm Life

Depends on where you live. The best quad is Dutch quad but that's more for athletes and upper class students. The apartments are alright, way better wi-fi signal than on the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

It's alright. Has a lot of majors, doesnt really branch off for science majors though like zoology or any sports health. Just general biology for doctors.

    Campus Safety

Campus feels small and virtually harmless. You can walk at 4am alone and feel safe but some areas are less safe than others and some distances are too far. There are shuttles but only until a certain time and people generally escort each other though there is usually a don't walk alone escort service after hours from the library.

    Greek Life

UA has social and professional sororities and fraternities which is great if you're looking for co-ed greek life or a truly hazing-free frat. You can join one of each so there's a lot of room for exploration.

Great for these types of students

Great for students looking to enjoy their college experience and don't mind late night noise.

    Bang for the buck

Good education and housing and decent dining services. The meal makes you feel like you're being cheated out of your money but all of the other facilities are good and constantly being updated. The construction gets annoying at times though.

    What to do for fun

UA is a short bus ride away from downtown Albany and there's usually a good party to go to if thats your scene. There's a shopping center nearby and a mall is also very close and there's glow golf, laser tag and a movie theater. There are also nearby parks and campus has a lot of intramurals and courts to offer so its hard to be bored.

    Food and Dining

The first month of school I lost five pounds because I didn't like any of the food. Each of the dining halls offers different options so if you explore you can generally find a decent meal but the school just signed a contract with a new food service company so this might change drastically.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are average. They can vary in size A LOT but every one comes with the standard closet, drawers and desk for each person. This can make it cluttered sometimes but if you bring storage for under your bed you can bring everything you own.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on what department you're in UA can be very challenging or you can coast. The lower level introductory classes are always harder than the more advanced courses and it always depends on the professor so always check before you sign up for a class. Some teaching assistants are better than the professors.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to visit campus at least once before accepting. A lot of people think campus is ugly but it can be beautiful and very convenient to get around. Also learn the difference between Indian and State Quads before you pick, it can make a HUGE difference.

    In three sentences

UAlbany is a great school if you want the true college experience and want a major that you can find anywhere else. If you're looking for a program that is very specific you probably won't find it here; with the exception of Human Biology. Overall awesome school if you're not afraid to explore a little.

Tons of fun clubs on campus: Lasertag, Improv, Zumba, Dance crews, Music groups, large religious communities, etc.

    Bring a bagged lunch.

    Dorm Life

If you're in an old dorm, you will feel like you're in a horror movie. If you're in the newer dorms, however, you will love everything about your dorm experience.

    Academic Rigor

Classes can be difficult and work intensive, but they are fair and you will learn a lot from them.

    Greek Life

Greek life is very popular with the Latino community. Although there are sororities and fraternities of many different kinds, the more culturally ethnic communities definitely stand out.

    What to do for fun

At SUNY Albany, every night hosts a variety of different events for students to attend. From sorority and fraternity events to sporting events, there is always an opportunity for a Great Dane to have a great time!

    Food and Dining

The food provided at UAlbany is average to be expected. While it is not the best food provided, it certainly isn't the worst. The school does try very hard to provide students with a variety of different food options and even cooks food based on special occasions such as serving crawdad in celebration of Mardi Gras. Aside from the dining hall, the school offers many different restaurant options in the campus center.

    Dorm Life

All of the quads are being renovated one by one with some quads allowing suite style living (meaning one bathroom share between 4-6 people). Rooms are reasonably spacious, but unfortunately the cost of living on campus is rather expensive.

Party? It's college after all. Join a club! There are lot's of them. Do SOMETHING with your free time, it's completely worth it. Go to the mall. It's 10 minutes away on the bus that runs to campus. Did I mention that students ride the bus for free? The mall has laser tag, a movie theatre, mini golf, and a Dave & Busters. Attend a program. With all of the clubs, there is always a program to attend after class. Find one, meet some people, have a good time.

    Food and Dining

The food on Indian and State is the best. The freshmen get it good. They just refurbished the Campus Center as well so other options are available.

    Dorm Life

There is never a dull day on the Quads, especially if you live in the towers. Block parties on the quads and Clash of the Quads increase school spirit a lot. Just don't set off any fire extinguishers or burn your popcorn in the microwave because fire drills in 30 degree weather are NOT fun.

    Academic Rigor

You will be challenged but you will not be driven to the end of a cliff. Just manage your time wisely and procrastinate as little as possible. Make to-do lists, use a planner, write due dates on a calendar. Just make sure you keep track of your assignments and you will be fine.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get too caught up in the partying, it's not worth your grades. Network, network, network! Be nice to your professors and even your classmates, you never know when you'll need them. On the school's main site, there is an event calendar with many events planned by students, such as parties, masquerades, game nights or movie nights. There is always something to do.

The food is AMAZING. The dining halls always serve delicious food and there is an endless variety. Everything is buffet and 'all-you-care-to-eat' except in the Campus Center which has a variety of fast food, sandwich, and chinese restaurants.

    Campus Safety

I have never felt unsafe on campus. There are many blue lights with phones scattered around the campus so whenever you feel threatened, you can pick up the phone and the campus police will come assist you.

    What to do for fun

UAlbany is near.... Albany! Albany is a cute little city that has dozens of restaurants and tiny shops. There is also a big mall complex with Dave & Busters and a movie theater about 10 minutes away by bus (which you can get on right from campus.) Aside from playing games and shopping for clothes and whatnot, there is an enormous Walmart for practically everything. I usually purchase food from there to keep in my dorm for late nights but they have anything else you could possibly need and it's not that much further than the mall. For activities on campus, there are many clubs and teams that you can join. UAlbany even has a laser tag club and a gaming club. The advantage of having so much diversity on campus, is having a plethora of clubs and teams. There's bound to be one that grabs your interest. People also tend to party a lot in downtown Albany. If you have some friends and know where to go it could be fun if you're in to that kind of thing.

    Food and Dining

The food is nothing special. There are 4 dining halls on the campus, one in each quadrant. These dining halls rotate the foods they serve daily and are open from around 7:30 am to 8:00 pm with the exception of one hall. I personally think closing the hall at 8:00 pm is a little to early but it's not entirely that bad. The campus center also has several dining options where you can get sub sandwiches, pizza slices, sushi, deli sandwiches, chinese, and mexican food depending on your meal plan. These places are open until 11:00 pm on weekdays so I always try to utilize these places to the best of my ability. The campus center food usually tastes better than the dining hall food. There is also a food market where you can purchase milk shakes, all sorts of beverages, freezer foods, dry foods like crackers, candy, and hot soup until late at night as well. The milk shakes are surprisingly good so I recommend trying those at least once. If you keep some snacks in your room for late a night, you shouldn't be too hungry most of the time.

    Dorm Life

I can't imagine dorm life is too much different from other colleges, but UAlbany utilizes a suite dorm style more often than the traditional 2 room mate dorms. In a suite, you can have up to 7 or 8 people you share a bathroom with but in my experience, I only had to share with 5 other people. Your dorm experience depends entirely on the type of room and suite mates you have. You have a chance of picking your room mate by filling out a form or requesting a person, however, your suite mates are totally random. Suite mates give you an opportunity to make more immediate friends but also has a downfall if you can't agree to respect each other. Usually if the later happens, you can talk to an RA about your situation and may be able to switch rooms. I personally like to have a bathroom that is only shared with a couple other people. You don't have to leave your dorm to walk down the hallway to use a communal one. However, the cleaning lady only comes once a week to clean your bathroom so make sure it's up to you and your suite mates to keep your dorm bathroom as tolerable as possible until then. Living on campus also gives you an opportunity to make many friends, as the nearest dining hall from you is usually only 2 minutes away. You can make friends in your hall, or meet new people in the dining hall. Everything is definitely accessible in a walking distance.

    Academic Rigor

Perhaps because I'm a freshman, the classes really don't seem to be difficult. I'm majoring in psychology and computer science so I have a mix of technology classes and social science classes. As a freshman, most classes will be in lecture centers so your professor won't get the ability to know your personally unless you really make an effort to make them do so. Because professors have such huge classes, I find that they don't give out much homework at all and the tests are easy as long as you look at the textbooks for the class. You may also get some smaller classrooms with around 30 people in it and even then I didn't find those classes too hard. As long as you stay involved and participate you might not even have to study too hard. Remember, you're in college at this point and that means you WANT to be there. Take classes you have interest in so that participating in class can actually be fun for you and studying will be less annoying.

    Tips for prospective students

Always look at your syllabus and manage your time accordingly. Professors usually tell you when assignments are due in advance and when tests will be held so you have the advantage of studying or contacting a TA (or professor) for help in the allotted time if you need it. If you know what you want to major in that's great but don't feel bad or worried if you don't know what you want to do yet. Take classes that interest you or get your general education classes out of the way first. You have until junior year to make a decision and even then counselors are there to help you out with that sort of thing.

    In three sentences

UAlbany is a great school in diversity. There are many people that come from different social and ethnic backgrounds so you can learn about many different cultures and lifestyles if you get to know people. UAlbany also offers many academic paths and doesn't force you to choose a major until junior year.

    Campus Safety

It is so easy to feel safe on this campus. An officer from the campus police department is always available and about on campus. Blue Lights are on at night so students can easily find their ways to telephones if they ever need to make emergency calls. Five Quad is the school's own emergency service in case any student needs to be taken to the hospital by ambulance.

    What to do for fun

There are so many opportunities to have fun on campus. Each residential quad has a lot of green space for students to hang out in during the warmer weather. Collin Circle is a great place for people to be to eat, mingle, or play sports or music. Danes After Dark is a program available weekend nights that allows students to relax from a long school week, with a DJ and music, pool and ping-pong tables, and even sometimes masseuses. Many guest speakers come to Albany and students have the opportunities of seeing them speak in the auditoriums, or watching our fellow students perform plays and works of music.

    Food and Dining

There are multiple varieties of foods offered at each meal throughout the days here. Healthier options are available, encouraged even. The dining halls also offer many fun nights that make eating a little more exciting, such as a themed dinner (like Chinese food night) or having a chocolate fountain available for desserts. The Campus Center here also provides a change from the normal dining hall life. In the Campus Center there can be find an assortment of fast-food restaurant style options for meals, ranging from a salad bar to a burrito place, and including an Auntie Anne's pretzels.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great - incredible, even. It is a quick and easy way to meet new people and make close friends so long as one is open to the idea. There are many convenient places for students to hang out with one another or to escape to a quiet place to study.

    Academic Rigor

This school offers academic programs that challenge their students. Students are forced to think, and more than that they need to participate in their classes - something that makes some students leave their comfort zones but which also betters them as people. The hard work this school calls their students to do definitely pays off.

    Tips for prospective students

Any student coming to the University at Albany should get involved with all Albany has to offer, whether it be Division I athletics, club and intramural sports, greek life, general clubs, or even just school spirit. Just get involved. It's also important to focus hard on school work and do well; make sure to get a good sense of time management down.

Albany is very academically challenging, but this in itself becomes very rewarding for its students. Albany is also incredibly athletically talented and its students get deeply involved in school spirit, chanting the well known UA U Know cheer in the crowd. This undergraduate school provides so many opportunities for its students to get involved and have not only a great college experience, but also a great opportunity to create successful pathways for their futures.
