Categories Comments Great for these types of students There is an organization on campus for everyone to be involved in and to make friends.
Tips for prospective students Come prepared to experience a college not like any other.
Bang for the buck All of the professors are well qualified to be teaching their subjects. You will learn what you are supposed to know for your major by the time you finish. The different facilities available to students are well kept and offer a wide variety. The Recreation Center is very nice and offers classes such as ballet, hip hop, aerobics and more to students for free.
Am enjoying being here I love UAB's campus! The student body is very diverse. Everywhere I look I always see many ethnicities and not always in their own groups. I am also very involved on campus. I am a member of a sorority, a non-denominational Christian association, and I love volunteering with Into the Streets, Down the Alley, and anything I can do to help the community. It is also very different from most colleges because it is in the down town area of Birmingham. There is always something to do on campus whether it is hanging out with friends or joining the many organizations.
Am learning a lot The University of Alabama at Birmingham has many tools to help students succeed in their classes. Many of the science and courses have sessions every week to discuss the lectures. Students are able to ask questions and get answers from students who have taken the class before and have done well. The professors are always willing to take the time to help their students when they ask for help. The professors always seem to care about the success of each student in their classes. Many give advice the first day of school on ways to keep up in class and tips on studying for their specific subjects.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UAB is for you if you are interested in - -Sciences, such as chemistry, biology, etc. -Graduate school-dentistry, medical, health professions, etc. -Diversity -Long-life friendships
Tips for prospective students Words of advice: If you are up for the challenge of your life with hard course work, networking with faculty and other students, participating in fun-filled activities and programs, then pursue it! You will not be disappointed. I am currently a sophomore at UAB, and many people would say that after a year or so it gets boring. Well, it doesn't. There is always something new happening each day, which makes UAB so wonderful. That's what makes it so unique.
Bang for the buck As with any university, the price can be expensive, especially since the economy becuase of the current economy status. Nevertheless, I would say that you get your money's worth from this university. There are several resources available that can provide you with financial aid support.
Am enjoying being here I love it here!!!!! I have never been happier at UAB. They have so much to offer. There are plenty of activities on campus throughout the academic school year, from seminars that are informative about the academic process, financial aid, etc. to study abroad opportunities. Another reason why I enjoy UAB. Gang Green Rules!!!! When football season rolls along or any other major sport, Gang Green is there to raise spirits with enthusiasm and of course, free T-shirts and other items for the Blazer Fans!
Am learning a lot If you're interested in the medical field, then this is the place for you. UAB has several resources that can help you get a head start on your career in no time. I have learned a lot from the professors here. They are very helpful and are willing to assist in any way that they can so that you can succeed, whether it is during class, office hours or even outside of class.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UAB has always been known for its wonderful Medical School. However, it is now also an Art school as well. Therefore, UAB is great for all majors! Another great thing about UAB, is that we are ranked number THREE in the country for diversity. UAB has so much to offer, and you will love it here!
Tips for prospective students The most important thing I learned from my first semester is to get involved! Attend meetings, club organizations, and games. Getting involved will help you meet new people as well as become more aware about things happening on campus. They also look great on your resume! (Oh, and at all the events, there is usually free food and tshirts! I've gotten almost fifteen shirts since I have been here, and haven't had to buy any of them! That's always a great bonus.)
Bang for the buck College can be expensive, no matter where you go. UAB is definitely worth your time and money though. UAB offers tons of scholarships and financial aid to help keep the costs down! So, you are sure to be able to afford it.
Am enjoying being here I love being here at UAB. There are many activities to keep me involved in, such as sports, games, club activities, volunteering opportunities, church organizations, and weekly weekend outdoor pursuit trips. The dorms also hold events almost everynight. You are never bored at UAB. There is always something going on!
Am learning a lot The University of Alabama at Birmingham is a great college! I am a freshman here, and have just finished my first semester. I couldn't have expected a better experience! UAB offers many programs and organizations to help you switch from a high school setting to a college setting. Although the two are very different, you don't have to be nervous! UAB makes sure you are enjoying your new college life.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This campus is great for students who was a good variety of people. There is always something interesting happening on campus even if it is after midnight. It is a very exciting place to be.
Tips for prospective students If I were to offer any tips they would have to be to make good friends that are going to have your back and support you. Friends will drag you to class and to study sessions even when you don't want to go, and trust me you will thank them later.
Bang for the buck As with any college it is expensive, but I do feel like I am getting the good education I am paying for.
Am enjoying being here The college offers what they call a FLC or freshman learning community. The objective of these courses is to get you the student in a group of friends that share common interests. Honestly if I had not been in a FLC I would not have made the great friends I have now.
Am learning a lot This college has a lot of good professors to offer. So far I have no complaints about the teachers, they have all been fair so far and are concerned about my succeeding in their courses.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UAB is a great school for anyone who loves diversity and a good atmosphere, but particularly best for students who want to major in health professions and the medical field. I am a political science major and I love the school and the people here, but we are all different so make a choice that has your best interest in mind.
Tips for prospective students My tips for students who want to attend UAB are keep a positive attitude about everything, work hard, but have fun too, and prepare yourself because college is a lot of freedom all at rushing in at one time. I learned that talking to people about what to expect helped me a lot, but somethings I had to learn for myself. Explore the campus, get to know people, and enjoy this experience!!!!!!!!!!
Bang for the buck The money you pay to go to school at UAB is money well spent because the campus is beautiful and it looks exactly like the pictures in the brochures. There are activities for the students to participate in all the time and facilities that we can use are amazing, clean, and up-to-date.
Am enjoying being here I love being at school and it's not just the freedom either. I've met some really good people who I believe will be life long friends. We laugh together all the time and we have fun even when there is nothing to do.
Am learning a lot I'm learning a lot here at UAB. I'm only a freshman and this is my second semester, but the professors that I've had have all been wonderful and the material they taught was interesting. I really believe that you'll learn as much as you want to learn and I'm sure making the most out of my education. The advisors help a lot with recommending the classes that you should take. Over all I can't complain about my school, its perfect.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UAB is a great school for students who don’t want a college that is too big or one that is too small. Students who like a city campus instead of a rural campus will like UAB. UAB is a fantastic school for anything in the medical field so if you plan to major in nursing, nuclear medicine, medicine, etc., UAB would be a great choice.
Tips for prospective students Before you come to UAB, find out about all of the amazing services and opportunities available for you and all the other students at UAB. There are numerous organizations that you can research and join so you can make friends and become involved in UAB. A good place to start is at orientation. Part of the orientation is similar to a trade show – the different organizations have booths set up and you can walk around and talk to the representatives to find out more about what they do. Take this part seriously and find a group or groups that will work for you. One more thing, read and follow the ‘list of what not to bring to campus’ which is on the UAB website! The rooms are small and you really don’t need to bring anything on this list.
Bang for the buck Attending UAB and living on campus is not cheap but the education I am getting is going to be worth it. I have great parents who are paying for my education although I need to get a part time job soon to help out. UAB is well known and respected and is a great school (it is ranked among the top 15 percent of U.S. colleges and universities by The Princeton Review) so I believe I am getting an above average ‘bang for my (parents) buck’.
Am enjoying being here I love it at UAB. I have the best classes, teachers, friends, boyfriend, dorm and family anyone could ask for. My life is amazing right now and I am so excited for the future and to see what is in store for me, but I'm definitely not rushing it. I am living my life a day at a time and loving every minute of it.
Am learning a lot I am amazed at how much I have learned so far and I only have one semester completed. In addition to all that I learned in my coursework – Chemistry, English Comp, Pre-Calculus Trig, Psychology, and Public Health – I have learned so much outside of the classroom. I have meet people from different cultures and countries and with different beliefs. I learned how different and at the same time how similar they are to me. I have learned that I can’t wait until the last minute to start studying for a test like I could when I was in high school! I have learned to try not to get caught up in everything that goes on every single day. There is always something going on in the dorm and in every other part of campus. I learned that I need to stay focused on school work while still participating in the fun stuff. I have learned how to get involved, while still making time for fun and meeting new friends. I have learned that you don’t wash white clothes with anything red!

Categories Comments What to do for fun UAB has a huge outside open area for students to use. For example, you might see students lying on beach towels trying to tan, or you might see a game of flag football.
Food and Dining To be completely honest, the food at UAB is good for about the first month and then the lack of choices can get to you. Especially, since freshmen who live on campus are required to purchase a meal plan; thus, being forced to eat the same things over and over.
Dorm Life I lived in Blazer Hall for my freshman year and I LOVED it! Blazer as the students call it, always had something going on. There was something to do for all types of people, as well as all types of interests. I also liked that Blazer had so many study rooms, because a good education was the reason I attended UAB in the first place.
Academic Rigor While many of the courses at UAB can be rather tough, they are not impossible to pass. One could say that you feel more accomplished for earning an A at UAB than another school, because you would have worked very hard and truly earned it.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students should either set up a personal tour with a trailblazer, or attend a UAB day. During a UAB day, you can bring your high school transcript and an immunization form to apply to be a student. The best part is that you will find out that same day if you were accepted or not!
In three sentences UAB is an exceptional place for one to further their love of science. It has some amazing professors that you will look up to and remember for the rest of your life. UAB is a melting pot of sorts; I love how diverse our student population is!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I'm thinking health profession majors, science majors, and arts & humanity majors.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you get your financial aid information and transcripts in on time. It matters a lot.
Bang for the buck They offer a mass amount of scholarships and financial aid if you meet the requirements by deadline. If I had not received a scholarship, I would have still been going to college for free because of the amount of money from financial aid and me living off campus.
Will enjoy being here I'm not exactly introverted or extroverted so I'm hoping to make a few like-minded friends here. Everyone seems friendly though--which is good because I am too. :) I hope I'm able to pass my classes! Also, The campus is beautiful and there are plenty of activities on campus and in Birmingham--even for the eccentric few
Will learn a lot From what I've seen and heard, the classes are highly informative and the professors aren't just teaching for the money. I am amazed at how many classes there are to choose from and I'm really looking forward to getting a taste of college life at UAB.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UAB is a great school for all those interested in medicine, engineering, nursing, or medical technology. However the art department is expanding. There is even a build-your-own major program, so there is something for everyone.
Tips for prospective students Apply Early! If you come from a long distance, make friends on face book beforehand! There are others just like you! Be prepared to work!
Bang for the buck At UAB you get world class education for a fraction of the price of other major research institutions. Especially if you are an in-state student, its a great investment in education. The dorms are moderately priced, although the meal plans are a bit on the expensive side and there is a dining fee in the form of dining dollars.
Am enjoying being here Although UAB is not categorized as a party school, there are plenty of things to do. Whether it's a boys or girls sports event, to dorm sponsored socials or comedy shows, you shouldn't get bored! If you have a car it's an added bonus because you can go off campus to other events.
Am learning a lot Coming from a different high school system in Washington DC, UAB has reinforced many of the things I have learned in high school. The curriculum is tailored to your specific major, and the professors are great overall!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is a big deal at UAB. Tere are help booths located all across the campus that call the police. UAB also has their own police station filled with actual policemen.
Great for these types of students UAB is a great school for any type of student, actually. If you play sports, the school has PLENTY! There are also leagues for students who arent as talented, but just want to have fun. There are many different origins of people at the university so no student will feel left out or misplaced.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus A student would have to make their own tradition if they would like to.
What to do for fun Be sure to visit the recreation center often! Eat at Hungry Howie's because they have amazing pizza and crust. Take the open opportunity when there are campus based events, because it surely offers what a starving college student wants most, free food.
Food and Dining There is a Chic-Fil-A, and a Taco Bell! There is also a Starbucks in the library, with many great dining places on and off the campus.
Dorm Life Having a ice group of friends will happen while living in the dorms, just remember to clean up after yourself!
Academic Rigor There are many prestigious programs at this university. There are ambassadors, resident assistants, tutoring programs, etc.
Tips for prospective students Study frequently to stay on top of those grades.
In three sentences I enjoy the many opportunities at UAB. The students are friendly and the professors actually teach. Studying is key if you want to do well there.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Other then stay alert, do your work, follow rules,..............Have fun ^_^.
Tips for prospective students Always have your facts, Keep your information to your self not every one is for you here you are a treat as long as you are trying to be some one, Trust. Keep your room as it was before you entered make a note as to how the room was even if that includes taking a picture. Read your policies ask for copies, stay on Fafsa aid, your student aid. Stay on top of your belongings, if you one of those times that loses it when you have to pay for losing your key to some one, steal this, Trust you'll have to pay, and there not responsible for your things. Now stolen things when your room IS locked, car broke into, well duh tell him to pay. But misplacement's disorderly character destruction is intolerable so stay alert.,
Bang for the buck I really had a h**l of a hassel with this here I was at the finicial aid office, 3 months before all this and now they tell me I'm missing a signature. Learn from this, Ask, ask, ask, ask again is there anything else you'll need for my records? Make sure you ask, and note that they will drain you if you don't note all your steps, All.
Am enjoying being here I am now on campus, enjoying the view of freedom from my dorm window. knowing that I still have this payment sucks through. I have my own bedroom, bathroom, desk, separate door from my 1 room mate. We share the fridge, sink, cabinets, microwave, stove, and living area for visitors.
Am learning a lot I love the atmosphere perhaps because I can play around a bit and know it's an A for acting

Categories Comments Great for these types of students those who love a diverse student body, pre-med, pre-dental, pre-optometry, most pre-professional majors, psychology majors, those who love a city feel to the campus, those who like to live in a bigger city, those who want a non-traditional honors program, those who love having a more personal relationship with instructors instead of being just another statistic
Tips for prospective students Apply early ! For those who wish to apply for any of the four honors programs, you should definitely apply to the university ASAP because your Honors College applications will be accepted but will NOT be processed until you apply to the university itself. If you plan on applying for more than one honors program, you must keep in mind that there will be different essay topics for each of the programs. You definitely do not want to wait until the last minute to write them. Also, prospective students should ask for recommendations from their teachers well in advance of application deadlines. It is never a good idea to have your teacher write you a recommendation in a hurry. In-state students who want to apply for scholarships should understand that UAB has a different system than most universities. The higher your ACT/SAT score is, the lower your GPA has to be to qualify for a certain scholarship, but the lower your ACT/SAT score is, the higher your GPA has to be. For example, getting a 33 ACT with a 3.0 GPA will qualify you for consideration for the Presidential Scholarships (ranging from $7000-full tuition/require fees/housing), while a 32 ACT and a 3.7 GPA will only get you the Golden Excellence Award ($6,000/yr.) So my advice is -- STUDY HARD FOR THOSE SATs/ACTs and work hard on maintaining/raising your GPA by the end of junior year !
Bang for the buck For those with a strong academic and testing record, receiving scholarships should not be a problem at all. The scholarship department is dedicated to helping you find a means of financing/paying your tuition, housing, and other fees. Students who have been accepted into UHP can also apply for the Honors Program's own scholarship. Housing scholarships are also available. Honors students get honors housing without having to pay higher housing fees, which are required for honors housing at many other colleges and universities. Any student who has earned college credit through high school courses will be pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of education they receive for the price of tuition.
Will enjoy being here UAB has consistently made the Princeton Review's Happiest Students and Most Diversity lists. I think it is absolutely amazing how students from so many different backgrounds are able to come together in harmony. It really allows students to experience a plethora of different cultures, especially since the school hosts many different cultural festivals and activities throughout the school year.
Will learn a lot As a student enrolled in the University Honors Program (UHP), I will be replacing the traditional required core courses with what the university calls interdisciplinary seminars in order to prevent students from simply sitting through the same courses they have been taking since the 1st grade. I think that this really helps students understand the subject better in relation to their respective majors .

Tips for prospective students Always ask for help. Never say you don't have anything to do here because if you ask around there are always thing to do. Ask and people here will advise. Don't be shy! Get involved! =)
Bang for the buck I do enjoy my education at UAB because of its honors programs. I believe that the cost is relative reasonable but because of my financial situation, I have to give it a four star.
Am enjoying being here Through UAB, I am making friends of different cultural backgrounds. I enjoy learning about cultures and languages, so this environment gives me a huge advantage. Also from my friends, I learn that we are all alike in many ways, even if our cultural backgrounds are different.
Am learning a lot I am learning A LOT through the interdisciplinary program provided by UAB. I love learning from one extreme to another. The diverse learning environment allowed to captivate my attention and immerse me in wanting to further my higher education even more.

Am enjoying being here I love being here, because there's just so much diversity.
Am learning a lot In high school, I took some of the same basic courses as I do now. But this first semester, I feel like I actually learned something that is going to stick with me. Most teachers are fair and actually want to help you.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students of all ages from those just entering the college system to those returning to finish their degree.
Tips for prospective students Check deadlines early!
Bang for the buck More expensive than a two year college of course but still way cheaper than say Alabama or Auburn. tuition ranges from 3k to 5k + depending on what classes you are taking and at what level.
Am enjoying being here The staff really know their stuff and have been helpful. Everyone from the professors to the advisors know their job and how to best get you through your degree. The atmosphere is very friendly and it doesn't feel like a big college at all.
Am learning a lot All the professors know about the subject they are teaching (something I would have hoped would be an obvious requirement but sadly wasn't at my previous college)

Tips for prospective students If you are planning on coming to UAB it is a wonderful school but you must be willing to study. It is not an easy school but there is plenty of help around such as free tutors, professors and supplemental instruction in some science classes. I think you would love it if your looking for a college where the information you learn is carried with you when you leave!
In three sentences The University of Alabama at Birmingham is a wonderful school that has great professors who are willing to help you through the years you are there. I would recommend UAB but I would say studying a bunch here is the key to success at UAB. When you leave UAB you will definitely remember and attain the material you have learned.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I have never felt unsafe on campus. There are UAB help buttons located all around campus that call the police when you push the button.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Gurney Durby is an event that occurs around homecoming. Teams choose they're names and costumes and race gurneys down 14th Street South. It's very entertaining.
Bang for the buck I'm out of state so the tuition hurts me more than it does for in state residents.
What to do for fun There are a couple clubs in the city that are fun to go to. There is an area next to UAB called Five Points that has restaurants and shops and its fun to walk around. And of course Fraternities and Sororities throw some fun parties.
Food and Dining Dining is pretty good. We have a lot of food to choose from. The HUC has Chick-fil-a and Taco Bell, which the meal plan can be used for. The commons has a lot of stations of food to choose from also.
Dorm Life Living in the dorm is a lot of fun. Activities are planned every so often for the residents and they're fun to attend. Roommates can be fun, or they can be a drag, but I still enjoy living with others that attend school.
Academic Rigor I have not had too many hard classes so I have had ample time to study for those that are difficult and I do not have to study much for the easy classes.
Tips for prospective students I would suggest getting involved in activities you are interested in. I did not first semester and was very home sick, but I have a lot more activities and a lot more fun second semester. I would also suggest scheduling classes to make sure you have a lunch break.
In three sentences UAB is a great school, especially those who want to pursue a career in the medical field. I enjoy all of the events and clubs available and I have had very good teachers. The green is a great area to hang out and have down time after classes.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have our own campus police. And have help boxes located all throughout the campus and if you are ever in trouble all you have to do is press the button on the help box and it will immediately alert the police. If you are being chased, run to the different help boxes and the police can track your locations.
Clubs and Activities There are countless clubs and activities around UAB. In the middle of our campus is this quad that we call the green. You will always find something going out there!
Great for these types of students UAB is great for all students. It is one of the most diverse campuses in Alabama, if not the nation.
What to do for fun UAB is located in the middle of Birmingham, Al. There are three different malls within 15 minutes of campus. There is what my roomates and I do for fun!
Food and Dining The are many food options on campus. Chick Fil A and Taco Bell are right on campus and you can use your meal plans there! The Diner is open until 2:00 a.m for those nights that you have stayed up to study and now you are starving!
Dorm Life I live in a dorm, and it is great! I absolutely love my roomates, we are inseparable! Living on campus makes it much easier to get class on time and everything is right there at your finger tips. Plus there are always events going on at campus.
Academic Rigor The courses are not impossible but they do require studying. In high school most students do not have to study to get an A in their class, but it is not that way in college. You have be devoted and dedicated.
Tips for prospective students Stay on top of your studies. The teachers are really nice and they will help you in any way the can, but they are not going to give out free points. UAB offers a program called Supplemental Instruction (SI), it is very helpful, so go at every opportunity you have!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus security is something UAB takes very seriously. There are help buttons stationed all across campus, and one only needs to press them in order to contact campus security 24/7. The officers are very helpful and understanding, even offering to escort students in the middle of the night to their destinations. In my entire year, I have never felt unsafe on the campus and that is saying something.
Greek Life At around 5-10% of UAB's student population a member of a fraternity of sorority, Greek Life is not as big at UAB as it is at other colleges. However, it is still present and thriving. Greeks are heavily involved all across campus, in addition to their Greek organization. There are many events such as Homecoming and Greek Week, where the Greeks are in friendly competition with each other. Greeks also participate in community service and philanthropy. And at the end of the week, Greeks know how to unwind and party. As a member of a fraternity, I can say the best part of Greek life though, is the social aspect. You will meet people that you will be bonded to not just in college, but for the rest of your life. When one goes Greek, they just don't sign up for a club; they sign up for a lifestyle.
Clubs and Activities UAB offers an astounding number of student-run clubs. These clubs are all synchronized online with UAB, so finding and registering for a club is very easy and streamlined. UAB also has many on-campus activities, such as movie nights, intramural sports, and volunteer opportunities. The options are very diverse, so there will be something for everyone to get involved in.
Great for these types of students Science/Engineering majors. Pre-health (medicine, dentistry, optometry) students. Students wanting to get involved in research or academia. Students looking to have fun but still desiring a serious education.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During the start of every exam season, UAB hosts a midnight breakfast, free for all students. They serve typical breakfast items including bacon, eggs, and hash browns. The food is very good quality, and is something looked forward to every exam season.
Bang for the buck While tuition itself is very reasonable, UAB has many additional fees outside of tuition, such as campus dining fees, lab fees, and student health fees. These fees are numerous, and their costs add up over time. Meal plans and campus housing add to the costs significantly, and it doesn't help that they are overpriced. However, UAB does offer many scholarships to incoming students, and these help to offset the cost.
What to do for fun Students can participate in many on-campus activities, such as watching UAB hosted movies, playing in intramural sports, and just relaxing on the green. Greeks tend to throw parties often, and those are always a blast. And since UAB is located downtown Birmingham, there is quite a variety of nightlife options available a short drive away. There are many 18+ clubs and bars downtown so even people who are not legally allowed to consume alcohol can go and have a good time.
Food and Dining The food is average. It is unhealthy, overpriced, and poorly prepared. Students will be better off cooking their own food, or eating off-campus.
Dorm Life Living in the dorms, especially for freshman year, is highly recommended. For most people, it will be their first time living away from home, and it is eye opening. It is a lot of fun, and will definitely help students to mature.
Academic Rigor As UAB is recognized nationally for its contributions in biological and medical research, it falls to reason that UAB sets high standards academically, especially in the sciences. Students will have to work hard in order to achieve the grades they desire. There is much more material covered in college classes than high school, and so most students will have to improve their study habits if they wish to keep up.
Tips for prospective students Get involved! This is the best way to meet many new people in a new environment and make lasting friends. College is so much more than academics, and involvement in campus life will define your college experience.
In three sentences The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a nationally recognized university that has everything a student could wish for. It is top-tier in academics, hosts an enormous amount of campus activities, has a thriving Greek life, and prepares students excellently for their future. If a student wishes to receive a quality education but still wants to have the full college experience, then UAB is the college of choice.

Categories Comments Campus Safety If you stay smart, you stay safe. It is located in the heart of a city, and the campus is NOT separated at all. The projects are almost within walking distance. The campus is no stranger to crime, but they have a great response force and locations with buttons to press if you feel threatened. They do all they can do mitigate the risk, but it's best to stay in groups or use their fabulous escort service.
Greek Life Virtually non existent. They are there if you want to join, but that culture does not permeate UAB at all.
Clubs and Activities Pretty much all the typical ones you have at any college. Join Circle K for a community service organization!
Great for these types of students Non traditional, traditional, focused, academically inclined, ambitious.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Al's restaurant is a must visit. It's open 24 hours, so it's perfect for college life and within walking distance from all dorms. UAB is always developing new traditions. Read the college paper to stay abreast of the happenings.
Bang for the buck Tuition is reasonable, but the dorms are expensive. Books are obnoxious everywhere, so that's no change here!
What to do for fun Since UAB is in the heart of Birmingham, there's always plenty to do. Check out events on campus. Five points has plenty of spots to hang out.
Food and Dining They put in a new dining hall, so the food has greatly improved. Once you pay the original food plan, start investing in blazer bucks b/c they can be used anywhere. The food is mostly good.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty good. If you get Rast or Blazer, you have to sign in your guests, which can be a pain. Blount hall is by far the best if you can get in, but it doesn't have a bathtub! They are kind of expensive; you may do better in an apartment.
Academic Rigor I found my classes to have a fair balance. Some of my classes were pretty easy; other classes were a challenge. I found that there were always resources to help in the classes that were difficult, even if the professor was distant.
Tips for prospective students Get involved early, especially if you're a commuter. It's harder to start getting involved your junior year. Don't be afraid to attend lectures, events, and showings put on by various organizations. They're interesting, and you meet new people. Most of all, take advantage of all the resources; your tuition money paid for it.
In three sentences UAB is a great school, for traditional and non traditional students alike. No matter what your interests are, you can easily find like minded people who share them. As a learning focused environment, UAB is unparalleled.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I like to hang out in the Hill University Center or workout at the campus recreation center. There are also other things to do like swimming, rock climbing, and meeting up with friends or just relaxing in the mini park or on the green (the yard).
Food and Dining Aside from eating out, there are two places on campus you can eat. There is the Blazer Cafe, which serves Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, and Grill 360. The other place to eat is The Commons and they a variety of foods to choose from. On a scale of 1-10, I rate the dinning experienc a 10.
Dorm Life I'm not sure on how dorm life is because I stay off campus, but I never heard any complaints from my peers.
Academic Rigor Like I said before, remember to stay focused. If you are taking a difficult class, there is always review session provided by the teaching assistance to help better understand the material. The professors are helpful and understanding as well.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you stay focused on your classes. There is always something to do on campus, which can make it easy to loose focus on schoolwork.
In three sentences Overall, I love being a student at UAB. It is a great environment to be in and there something for everyone to be involved in.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Even though we are an urban campus, and there is crime out on the Birmingham streets, the campus itself is very safe. You are never far away from a police call-box, which rings directly to campus police. If you feel unsafe, you can call them and they will pick you up and give you a ride home. We also have free services that will unlock your car for you, change your tire, or give you a ride.
Greek Life Not really a thing here. We do have fraternities and sororities, but they are small and very friendly - not competitive like some other schools. They do great community service projects, host a multitude of events on and off campus, and go out of their way to make new students feel welcome. Generally, if you want to be in a fraternity or sorority, and you go to Rush Week, you will find a place to fit in and make great new friends!
Clubs and Activities There is a club for just about every special interest you can think of, and if there isn't, it's easy to create your own! Many students here are active members of clubs, be it political affiliation, religious, major-oriented, human rights, cultural, or social.
Great for these types of students We're one of the top medical schools in the country, so if you want to go into the medical field, you MUST come to UAB! You'd also do well here if you're from a different country, or want to make new friends quickly. Greek life is very subdued, and the fraternities and sororities we do have are non-exclusive and very friendly, so you can take part in their events even if you're not a member. UAB is also great for older or returning students who work full-time or have families, as many classes are offered at night, and the student body is very diverse.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During the warmer months, there is a fun event nearly every week, such as Spring Fling (with rides, free stuff, and carnival games), International Fest, which offers free food from around the world, and Homecoming Week, which has fun activites every day! Last year we had a zombie mob, where students dressed up like zombies and stormed the campus... fun!
Bang for the buck UAB isn't cheap, but they offer tons of scholarships, so most students are on some kind of financial aid. A typical semester of full-time classes and books will set you back about $3,500, but that also includes $500 worth of Blazer Bucks, which can be used at Barnes and Noble as well as pretty much everything on campus that you would need to buy, and also many restaurants and drug stores near campus. That pays for a great education that you can be proud of! Not to mention, you get free admission to all UAB sporting events, home and away, and the nearby Alys Stephens center, which has concerts, comedians, and lectures, offers super cheap student tickets, usually between $5-$20.
What to do for fun UAB rec center (our state-of-the art fitness center) offers intramural sports, ping-pong tables, and DIRT cheap trips to go hiking, white-water rafting, camping, rock climbing, etc. Around the Sterne Library, there are usually students hanging out, playing guitars, skateboarding, etc, if that's your thing. At the Hill University Center, there are plenty of places to either study or just chill out and watch tv. The whole campus has wi-fi, so you can take your laptop everywhere. There are also two great parks within walking distance, and lots of shopping, dining, and nightlife nearby. There are lots of planned events on campus as well, like free movie nights, guest lectures, book signings, cultural events, and there is ALWAYS free stuff being given away somewhere on campus if you keep your eyes peeled!
Food and Dining There are many, MANY places to eat in and around UAB! The Commons is your typical cafeteria-style place, with different areas set up for different types of food: American (burgers and sandwiches), International (stir-fry and curry), a pizza place, a meat-and-three, and a salad bar. There are also plenty of to-go options like sushi, microwave meals, cold cereal, fruit, and pastries. Across the street is the Blazer Cafe, which has a Chic-fil-a, a Taco Bell, a grill (serves meat and three and hamburgers and such), and a to-go station with salads, yogurt, pre-made sandwiches, and sushi, along with frozen microwave meals. We also have an Einstein Brothers bagel shop, TWO Starbucks, and several places where you can buy cheap meals to go, like premade sandwiches and fresh fruit. Because we are an urban campus, there are hundreds of other dining options nearby, from Italian to Greek to Japanese to Thai to Pizza to Mediterannean to Mexican... whatever your heart desires! Many of these places accept the UAB dining card, so you can eat off campus without worrying about the cost.
Dorm Life I don't really know, as I didn't stay in the dorms here, but from what I've heard, there are always fun activities planned so you can meet your neighbors and classmates. You'll have roommates and dorm buddies from countries all over the world, so it's a great place to practice learning a language or share cultural activities.
Academic Rigor Depends on your major, but classes are usually pretty tough. If you're in pre-med or nursing, don't expect to get any sleep. If you're in humanities, the work load is a little easier, but professors always expect your best work and will rarely babysit you... if you do the work assigned and you make time to study, you will succeed!
Tips for prospective students Definitely do a campus tour before you start classes here! The campus is sprawling and covers several city blocks, but a good, thorough campus tour, guided by current students who know their way around, will point you to where most of your classes will take place, show you the hot social spots, the best places to study, and where to get the best food on your lunch breaks! Also, make sure to make office appointments with your professors. They'll be more willing to give you a good grade if they know you personally.
In three sentences UAB is a great, multicultural university where you can make friends from all over the world! The urban campus puts you close to major cultural centers and special events, while retaining a small-town feel. Classes are small, and professors and advisers are more than willing to help you succeed!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Fairly safe. Well patrolled area. Although, this is downtown so you need to know where you are going and when to go.
Greek Life Many grate sororities and fraternities
Clubs and Activities Every club you could think of.
Great for these types of students independent, older or returning students
Bang for the buck great school at a reasonable price. Flexible schedule day and night
What to do for fun Birmingham is full of Art, Music, Theatre, Clubs, museums and great restaurants. We have a water park called Alabama Adventures, and several State parks.
Food and Dining There are 15 on campus dining options and many off campus restaurants take UAB Blazer Bucks off the UAB meal Plan
Academic Rigor Classes and professors are challenging. Need to attend class and do all the work on time.
Tips for prospective students Campus is spread out in downtown Birmingham. Must like to live in the city. This is a fairly large school. Class size will vary. Must be self sufficient and organized to stay on task. No hand holding here.
In three sentences Great School in a great location. Excellent programs for medicine, business, Arts. Affordable tuition.

Clubs and Activities A GREAT VARIETY.
Great for these types of students ALL TYPES.
Bang for the buck EXPENSEIVE BUT AFFORDABLE.
What to do for fun AFTER STUDYING, THERE ARE SO MANY RELAXING ACTIVTIES BUT I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO BECOMING A DELTA ONE DAY, SO I TRY AND PARTICIPATE IN MOST OF THEIR ACTIVIES. ALSO, THERE IS AN ABUNDANT OF VOLUTEER WORK OFFERED.
Food and Dining EXCELLENT CHOICES.
Dorm Life DORM LIFE IS GREAT. IT IS VERY CONVIENT AND ALLOWS FOR PARTICIPATION IN EVENTS AND GROUP ACTIVTIES.
Academic Rigor UAB HAS CHALLENGED ME TO STUDY MORE AND I HAVE LEARNED TO WORK HARDER THAN EVER BEFORE.
Tips for prospective students TOUR THE UNIVERSITY TO FIND OUT IF IT IS A FIT FOR YOU AND YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF COLLEGE LIFE.
In three sentences UAB IS VERY ORGANIZED AND THE PROFESSORS ARE FRIENDLY. THE CLASSROOM SIZES ARE IDEAL AND I ENJOY THE MANY OPPORTUNITES TO BECOME A PART OF DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Never walk alone at night. Always have your keys in hand if your walking to your car. It'll be nice to have some pepper spray on your keys as well.
Food and Dining The Commons has food from all cultures and there's an all you can buffet after 6 p.m. The HUC has a Chik-Fil-A, Taco Bell, a Grill 180, and a Soul food Bar.
Academic Rigor Study, Study, Study. Instead of trying to get 100%, go for 150%! The professors would definitely see your effort and they will go the extra mile to help you in the end. There are tutors available to help if needed.
Tips for prospective students STUDY! Stay ahead and on top of all your assignments because it is easy to fall behind and become overwhelmed. Sterne Library is going to be your best friend! There are group study rooms and individual study rooms. There's a Starbucks located in the library if you need a coffee break. The Green is the perfect place to kick back and relax with friends. The cafeteria in the Hill University Center and the Commons have amazing food choices. The REC is the best place if your one who loves to workout. There are classes for every workout and a trainer is available if needed.
In three sentences UAB is definitely the school one should attend if they are seeking diversity! The professors I have the privilege of knowing wanted nothing more but to see the student succeed. I have formed lifelong relationships which is great for networking.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is a help station on every corner of the campus so you will always feel safe. The campus police are also close by.
Clubs and Activities Like mentioned earlier, there are LOTS of choices to pick from when it comes to wanting to be involved!
Great for these types of students Great any type of students!
Bang for the buck Overall a great school to attend!
What to do for fun You name it, they have it for fun! There is always a festival or a campus event every month. Not to mention club activities. There are lots of volunteer opportunities as well.
Food and Dining They a lot of choices to choose from no matter what type of eating style you like!
Dorm Life The dorm life seems nice from what I hear. I do not live on campus so I cannot go into much detail.
Academic Rigor Lots of academic choices!
Tips for prospective students A tip that I would recommend to any new students is get involved. You do not have to do ten different things at once (unless you want to). Just being in one or two clubs a semester is a great idea, especially if you are going to a graduate or professional school. You would look well-rounded to your future interviewers!
In three sentences This school is really cool! I am learning a lot about everything! There is so much to get involved in!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Three different police departments patrol UAB's campus. We have the UAB Police Department that thoroughly patrols the campus, Birmingham Police Department, and the Jefferson County police department. Officers are regularly seen patrolling the campus and I feel very safe.
Greek Life Greek Life at UAB is great. While there are not as many sororities and fraternities as a Big Ten school for example, Greek Life is vibrant and is available to anyone who wants to get involved. It is not necessarily a big thing on campus so it is not overwhelming to those not wanting to get involved with Greek Life.
Great for these types of students Most of the students here are pre-med / pre-nursing and it definitely shows. UAB is not in any way a party school, although if you want to have fun you can definitely find it. However, UAB is mostly conservative due to the nature of the biology & nursing programs. UAB is a top choice among those aspiring to be doctors or nurses.
Bang for the buck Being an out of state student, UAB was actually cheaper for me to attend than colleges in my own state! UAB is among the best value in education that I've seen for those who don't want to go to community college but still don't want to spend a lot of money at a 4-year institution.
Food and Dining We have only one dining hall on campus which severely restricts options for homestyle meals. Although having one dining hall forces interaction among all students which is a plus. We also have a diner on campus that is open from 2pm-2am for students who prefer fast food style meals. Also in the University Center, there is a Chick-fil-A and Taco Bell and a Grill that serves homestyle meals & fast food options. A Subway is also on campus but does not participate in the meal plan. The quality of the food could be better but overall there are a few options of what students can eat.
Dorm Life UAB has great dorms in the sense that we have no community bathrooms! The dorms are relatively clean and the two newer dorms on campus Blazer (freshmen) and Blount Hall (sophomores & upperclassmen) are the nicer of the dorms on campus. Living in the dorms is great because they are all close to the class buildings and you can meet a lot of people by staying on campus for at least one year. Most of the dorms are pretty spacious and are an upgrade compared to other college dorms.
Academic Rigor UAB is one of the most difficult colleges in the state of Alabama. Our science courses are known to be extremely hard, although the staff & students here really do try their best to help others. There are a variety of resources here to insure academic success.

Dorm Life I will not be living in a dorm. I'm a commuting student.
Academic Rigor Having not yet taken a class at UAB, I cannot comment on its academic rigor.
Tips for prospective students Since I've not yet attended a class or experienced campus life at UAB, I cannot give prospective students advice.
In three sentences I like UAB, because it's diverse. The faculty is composed of just as many ethnicities as the students, so there should be no racial or cultural barriers. The faculty really cares about the student's personal success and achievement and makes the student's success and achievement a priority.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Despite being downtown, the campus is very safe. There are many emergency stations, and cops patrol pretty regularly. I have seen some cops actually remove homeless people who are sitting on the benches of common areas. They also have a system wide text/email alert notifying of any potential and unsafe circumstances
Greek Life I am not involved in the Greek system, so I can not rate this section. UAB also has a fairly small Greek life system with few sororities/fraternities.
Clubs and Activities Despite UAB's size, there are several clubs and activities for anyone. There is even a Chinese Dragon dancing club, a Rugby club, and other specific interest clubs.
Great for these types of students UAB is great for those who like the smaller campus feel, an easy to navigate campus, and who enjoy meeting people of all backgrounds of life.
What to do for fun It is always fun to participate in Student Life activities, hang out with friends on the green, go to the rec center, or relax in the Mini Park.
Food and Dining Honestly, the dining services at UAB are quite unsatisfactory. There is only one main dining hall, and the hours are not very convenient. This also includes being closed at random times and holidays. The food is not very great either. It is not worth the price of a meal, food portions are little smaller than average, and there is not much variety.
Dorm Life I'm glad to have lived in the dorm my freshmen year, for I gained many friends, networked, and formed study groups. I would probably not have utilized that if I lived at home. As for the quality of the dorms, they are not too bad, but there is always good and bad reviews depending on what exactly is asked to be critiqued.
Academic Rigor It is hard to necessarily grade the academic rigor, because it is dependent on the determination to succeed by each individual. From rumors, some departments are fairly easy while others such as Biology are rumored to be very difficult.
Tips for prospective students For prospective students, I would suggest living in the dorms their freshmen year for a unique social life they wold not get otherwise if living off campus.
In three sentences UAB is a quaint campus that is nicely laid out, so students are not running all over campus to get to his/her next class. Parking at UAB is not the greatest since it is located downtown and is primarily a commuter school. UAB is ranked as being one of the most diverse campus, and it is true with students and professors from all over the world.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UAB Police are all over campus and keep it very secure. There are these green Help buttons all over campus that call the police immediately. I feel very safe.
Greek Life It is not very popular at UAB.
Clubs and Activities There are clubs for everybody at UAB in every category.
Bang for the buck Tuition is slightly high, but the education you will receive is priceless.
What to do for fun Most student enjoy going to 5 points South for the nightlife. I perfer to go to the rec center because there are tons of activities to do there. The Green is also great to run and bicycle or just hang out on. Railroad Reservation Park is also a walk away and very nice.
Food and Dining Chickfila and Taco Bell become quiet tiresome after the first semester. Starbucks and Einstein's Bagels are the best two places. The diner is okay food, but very unhealthy. The Commons or cafeteria is probably worse than high school cafeterias.
Dorm Life The Dorms are fairly new and have quite a bit of security. Ra's put on numerous programs that are great to socialize with other students. Rooms are decent sized and there are no community bathrooms!
Academic Rigor Certain classes and professors are very difficult, but the majority of classes can be passed with minimum studying.
Tips for prospective students Go to RA programs to make new friends. UAB is great because there are literally students from over 100 countries represented here. Don't go out late out night without having a buddy or two with you.
In three sentences UAB provides unlimited opportunities for students. It is the #3 ethnically diverse school in the country. If a student wants to major in mathematics or sciences, then UAB is a great school.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is ALWAYS something going on on campus, just make sure you're keeping an eye out for posters, flyers, and signs. You can also explore Birmingham and its surrounding cities (Hoover, Homewood, Leeds, etc.) for fun in shopping, nightlife, public parks, and such.
Food and Dining There are quite a few places to get food on campus - the Commons, the Diner, the HUC Cafe, Einstein Bros., Starbucks, and the Cafe a la Carte in the BEC. Although you have options, eating the same thing gets boring and you grow tired of it. Luckily, Birmingham has VARIOUS places to eat that serve any taste you may have.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty decent if you live in Blazer or Blount because they are newer dorms. Camp, Rast, and Denman are older and you can definitely tell. One good thing about the dorm life is that you meet all types of people, and you almost always know what's going on on campus. Most of the big events are happening right outside your door.
Academic Rigor If you are used to studying and pushing yourself to make the best grades, it should be no problem. Prepare for the worst, but expect the best.
Tips for prospective students Don't take the courses lightly, especially if you are some type of health major. There can be a lot of distractions with such a busy campus, but make sure to stay focused. UAB is as fun as you make it!
In three sentences With me being from Anniston, Birmingham is far enough, but not too far. I love the campus life, the people, and the city. UAB was definitely a great fit for me.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck Tuition is moderately expensive but is worth every penny for the quality education.
What to do for fun There are many nightclubs found in downtown Birmingham, so boredom should never be an issue.
Food and Dining The food at UAB is overall high quality. Every dinner in the Commons is all you can eat. There is a Taco Bell and Chick-fil-a in the Blazer Cafe. I highly recommend purchasing a meal plan.
Dorm Life There are 2 dorms for freshmen and 3 dorms for upperclassmen. The freshmen dorms are both nice, and there are no community bathrooms on campus. The upperclassmen dorms are apartment-style; however, they are expensive. The upperclassmen dorms also fill up very quickly, so apply early!
Academic Rigor Academics are average at UAB. Like any university, it is imperative to study daily, but the classes are not overly rigorous. If you put in a strong effort, you will pass all your classes.
Tips for prospective students If you are interested in the medical field or research, come to UAB! It is one of the top medical research universities in the nation. You will create many wonderful memories here.
In three sentences An excellent school for any student interested in healthcare and the medical field. The professors are top-notch, and it is overall a quality university. All of the students are very friendly.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is a high priority at UAB since the campus is located in the downtown area. The Birmingham police work with the UAB police officers to ensure the safety of the students. I personally have never felt unsafe on campus at nighttime. That's mostly because there are help signs and buttons that when pressed allow you to speak directly with the police department. There is also a free campus taxi service as well for nighttime.
Clubs and Activities There are over 100 student organizations at UAB. You are bound to find one that you fit perfectly into.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The UAB mascot, Blaze the dragon, walks around campus regularly so you never know when you might bump into him.
Bang for the buck I definitely think that you get what pay for when attending UAB. Along with excellent academic course, you are offered free group and one-on-one tutors year round. They also offer free study cubicles that can be used throughout the year.
What to do for fun There are so many different things to do for fun at UAB. I personally love art and theater so I was always going to the plays, concerts, and museums that are walking distance from campus.
Food and Dining The food is average, but that's expected of most college campuses. If you get tired of the food offered on campus there are plenty of diners and restaurants walking distance from the school.
Dorm Life Dorm life was really great. I was really happy that I lived on campus because the people there really helped me adjust better to college life my first year.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor is very tough. You will need to make sure that you study harder and learn great study habits. At the end of the semester, you will leave the course having learned a great deal.
Tips for prospective students No matter what school you decide to attend, be sure to get really involved in the different programs that are offered there. It will help you meet lots of new people and adjust smoothly to the area.
In three sentences I think the University of Alabama is an amazing school that offers wonderful opportunities for its students. If I were to rate the school overall, I would give it a 5 out of 5. UAB offers the perfect balance between academic rigor and social activities.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Most people think because UAB is in Birmingham that it is unsafe, but that is so untrue. UAB is the safest campus that I have yet to know. Yes, there have been some mishaps, but overall it is pretty safe. There are campus help buttons all around the campus and in every elevator that calls the police when they are pushed. They even supply students with a number to call if you need a ride to class or if you are having car trouble. They report to anywhere on campus.
Great for these types of students UAB is great for students who want to be more diverse, and are really serious about their education. There are all types of interesting people and things to do that expose you to different cultures.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Green is a big, open field located between class buildings. It is a nice area, and people sit, play, listen to music, study, and even sleep out there at all hours.
Bang for the buck The campus is so nice and clean. Since I have been there, I haven't seen or heard of one fight or have been disturbed in any way.
What to do for fun I, personally, didn't do much over the years, but their are plenty of things going on in the dorms and on campus. Those are mostly free or reasonably priced.
Food and Dining The food is great, and their are so many options. You also get a meal plan at the beginning of each semester if you desire. They can be pretty expensive too, but they are well worth it. The latest campus dining stays open is 2 a.m. which is great!
Dorm Life The dorm life could improve in certain buildings, but they are safe and clean for the most part. They are also like apartments instead of dorms, so that's a plus.
Academic Rigor The good thing is that all of the professors are able to choose how they want to run their class, so the strictness all depends on them. The professors at UAB are very helpful, but you have to apply yourself and keep in close contact with them. They will not give you anything that you didn't earn.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you pay close attention in orientation so you will know where things are and how to operate in certain areas. Get all the scholarships and loans you can because it is costly, and pay attention in class. If you see from the first day or two of class that you don't think you can handle the workload, talk to your advisor immediately and get the class changed or dropped within the first week of classes because those professors are willing to help, but they won't babysit.
In three sentences UAB is a very safe, diverse university with almost any major or minor one could dream of. Although it is very costly, the advisors and administration staff are helpful and willling to assist the students in any way. The classes are a pretty good size, depending on your major, and I have hardly had any problems from my professors in all of the 4 years that I have attended. I love UAB.

What to do for fun Anything you can find in Birmingham!
Dorm Life Freshman halls: Blazer and Camp Upperclassmen halls: Blount, Denman, and Rast All easy walking distance to classes and campus dining.
Tips for prospective students The city center is large and the campus is centrally located in Birmingham, but don't feel like you will get lost easily. UAB's undergrad side is very enclosed and has easy access from one side to the other. The grad schools are also close to each other and not confusing with the other parts of the city. Don't be afraid to be undeclared coming in as a freshman. There is plenty of time to narrow down your ideas once you begin, just narrow down what your interests are.
In three sentences As a senior at UAB who has attended for all of my undergraduate career, I can honestly say that UAB has the potential to reach as far as needed to help their students gain access into any field they desire. It is very common and easy to customize majors or minors to cater to student's needs and the professors/faculty are well qualified in their areas of study. Go Blazers!

Categories Comments Campus Safety Despite the fact that the University of Alabama at Birmingham is in the middle of downtown Birmingham, the campus is extremely safe. With emergency help boxes every twenty feet and a police force of close to one hundred, the students at the university never feel unsafe.
Greek Life Greek life is non traditional at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. With no sorority or fraternity rows, the Greek Life is almost decentralized. However, despite all of this, the sororities and fraternities on campus are still extremely involved and throw plenty of functions throughout the year, such as dance competitions for the student body.
Great for these types of students The University of Alabama at Birmingham is an excellent institutions for students who are especially interested in research. Receiving thousands of dollars in grants every year, and recently receiving a 1 million dollar grant, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is a melting pot in research. Close to 80 percent of the student body is engaged in some type of research. Even if one is not a research student, the university of top notch when it comes to education in the biological sciences.
What to do for fun The city of Birmingham has something for everyone, from shopping to music festivals, and to museums. There are countless restaurants, ranging from Italian to Indian, that appeal to every taste. The University of Alabama sporadically brings in renown individuals, from award winning authors to actors to speak to students. The Alys Stephens Center that is a part of the university features world famous performers, even giving out student discounts.
Food and Dining Though there are plenty of places to dine: the Commons, Blazer Cafe, and the Diner, the quality of food is not particularly favorable. However, despite this, the locations of the places where one can eat are easy to get to, and the diversity of the menu leaves no one out, including vegetarians. There is also a two Starbucks and an Einstein Bros Bagels located on campus for quick coffee and snack stops.
Dorm Life Being a commuter campus, the University of Alabama at Birmingham has only four dorms, two for freshmen, and two for upperclassmen. The dorms are very safe to be in and are all co-ed. Though co-ed dorms may sound odd, it truly adds to your college experience, as you can maximize the amount of people that you can meet. The Resident Assistants do an excellent job of making everyone feel at home and welcome, even having programs that aid in bringing the residents together.
Academic Rigor The classes are not easy, but the professors are extremely helpful when it comes to any questions that a student may have. Do not expect easy an easy A, no matter how simple the curriculum of a class may sound. Expect to spend at least 3 to 4 hours of studying for each lecture. Though this may sound extreme, it is the only way to be successful in the class.
Tips for prospective students The University of Alabama at Birmingham does not have a traditional college campus. So, while you may not receive a classic college experience, you will receive a unique one, the important thing is to always keep an open mind. The professors are excellent but with many class sizes being so large, it is important to be more than a name on the roster. Ask questions in class and go to office hours, it will truly go a long way in your success in the class.
In three sentences The University of Alabama at Birmingham's uniqueness comes from the diversity of its staff and students. A pillar of the research community, this college has been encouraging students to have a passion for research, whether it be research on Physics or Philosophy. Overall, the experience given to a student here is one filled education beyond the walls of a classroom and preparation for anything that the world throws at them.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I was a book nerd!!! And never really networked and I really regret it. If you get into a lot of groups and know people then you will have a lot of fun. UAB homecoming is always fun.
Food and Dining The food at UAB is amazing!!! They just opened/renovated the dining area. There are plenty of choices to choose from. These choices are offered every day. Also, the food choices are available all day.
Dorm Life I stayed in the dorm for two years. My freshman year I stayed in the newest dorm so it was nice. I got along with all my roommates and my Dorm Manager was great. My sophomore year I moved to another dorm and it was STINKY. Hopefully, they'll empty the trash compactor more often nowadays!
Academic Rigor UAB is not a easy school by any means, but it definitely will prepare you for whatever career field you choose to do. When I first came to UAB, I never knew how to study, but definitely learned when I got there.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to study hard, but also know that it will pay off in the end. Networking is the KEY to success so talk to your professors, classmates, get in organizations and groups!! Step outside your tiny box, you'll see college is great.
In three sentences The University of Alabama at Birmingham is a school intended for students who plan on excelling in life. They are focused on preparing their students for the real world with plenty of internships and networking opportunities. UAB is an excellent place to be if you're looking for success in the workforce.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I'm more familiar with the graduate side, so if you like school and are about your studies you will do well.
What to do for fun Five Points is a fun little entertainment district. There's lots to do there, you just have to seek it out.
Food and Dining Downtown gives access to all sorts of eateries downtown and you can use Blazerbucks.
Dorm Life I wouldn't know.
Academic Rigor Challenging but doable. Everyone is pretty focused on school.
Tips for prospective students You will live off campus, there's not really a whole lot of campus housing, so start your search early.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is always on point. There is a police department hear on campus and sub-department in one of the dorm halls. Students should have no fears of being unsafe here on campus.
Greek Life Greek like isn't really big here on campus. I happen to be a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. It's pretty busy but we try to implement a lot of programs on campus to get non-Greek students involved on campus.
Clubs and Activities UAB offers so many different programs that you can get involved in. There is something for everyone on campus. UAB student involvement offers a ton of opportunities for students to exercise leadership skills.
Great for these types of students UAB is great for students who aren't big on parties and/or sports. The school isn't very sports oriented at all. In the past the football has been sort of bad. Parties aren't plentiful so there is plenty time to study hard then reward yourself every once in a while instead of every night.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus UAB homecoming week is really exciting. The bonfire is the best. The first usually burns so big and is always surrounded by lots of students each year. It's fun to just chill out and take some time away from studying to relax at the bonfire.
Bang for the buck I love learning. Although the courses are tough, the hands on labs are worth it. It gets hard to enjoy the the classes sometimes because we're so worried about how we will pay.
What to do for fun UAB offers so many different programs to get involved in here on campus. There is always opportunity to do some community service for fun with the on-going service program. There is also an office for student involvement where you can get everything you need for learning about all of the programs offered here on campus.
Food and Dining The cafe in the Hill university Center stops serving home cooked meals way too early. There is little to no seasoning on the food in the Commons diner. Most of what is offered is really fattening. It's way too easy to gain weight and get tired of the food being served.
Dorm Life Blount is the best building for dorm living. I lived in Rast Hall for a year and hated it. It's really dark in there. The freshmen dorm was OK but you share ONE bedroom with another girl and that was tough adjusting to.
Academic Rigor These classes are really difficult. I have yet to come across any course that some students would classify as an easy A. Even the one and two hour courses require hard work.
Tips for prospective students Start strong, and work harder than you play. Ask as many questions as you feel necessary. Use all the provided campus resources here for your success. Utilize the recreational center. Don't gain the freshmen 15 or more!
In three sentences UAB is a no nonsense school (i.e. there are absolutely NO grade handouts). The classes are difficult, especially the science courses. The campus dining could be better.

What to do for fun There are tons of clubs and societies you can join, you can volunteer for events and take free exercise classes at the rec center.
Food and Dining Lots of choices on and off campus.
Dorm Life The dorms are of course small and some are old but they are kept in good repair and the RAs are usually amazing.
Academic Rigor It really just depends on the teacher. I've had classes I pass without ever attending and others that were nearly impossible to pass no matter how much I studied.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared to do your own leg work for financial aid and pretty much anything else you need.
In three sentences It's located downtown so there's always something to do. Most of the teachers are wonderful and very helpful. There's always something happening on campus, from plays and movie screenings to job fairs and protests.

Clubs and Activities Tons of stuff to do and they are advertised all over campus. You'll find something you like to do.
Great for these types of students Hard working, outgoing, friendly students
What to do for fun I spend a lot of time in the campus rec. I love most sports but basketball is my passion. I enjoy working out, and attending on campus activities.
Food and Dining I like the on campus dining. They have the Blazer Cafe and the Commons on the Green. Both are very good. It is best that you get a meal plan because they a little pricey.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UAB is very cautious about students safety. Whenever their is incident on campus, UAB send out an alert by email or text to let student know to be careful of their surroundings. This has been very helpful for me since most of my classes are in the evening.
Greek Life I have not had the privilege to experience Greek life. As a returning older student, I feel Greek life is for the younger students whom just graduated from high school and embarking on their college journey. UAB has several sororities and fraternity's to choose from for all cultures.
Clubs and Activities UAB has several clubs and activities throughout the academic year. One club that caught my interest was the Mock Trial team. I never joined because they meet on Sundays and usually on Sundays I go to church and spend time with my family. One activity that was very interesting to me, was going to a musical symphony at the Allyens Stephens Center. UAB is so diverse and there are several options to choose from for clubs and fun activities.
Great for these types of students Student teaching is great for students whom are pursing a career as a teacher or a professor. UAB advises students who pursue these professions to be confident in there abilities to teach. For instance, in the chemistry department students get the chance to tutor their peers in a session called chemistry recitation which is required for all students. This is a very positive way to give students a boost of confidence for their future endeavors.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of the most unusual locations on campus is the University Boulevard building because it looks like a parking garage and you would not think there are classes being held in this building. When I first had a class in this building, it took me a couple of days to find it, because I thought the building was just used for parking. UAB is a very large campus and if you don't learn your way around, you will get lost.
Bang for the buck Students can get bang for their buck by using their campus card to get into football and basketball games. Another plus is the campus card can be used for dining or catering. If you have a special event coming up you can have UAB to cater it for you or students can stock up their dorm rooms with food, which is always a plus.
What to do for fun During the fall, UAB have several of football games and when playing at home it is always at Legion Field. The basketball games are my favorite and it is very accessible because it's at the Bartow arena, which is right on UAB campus. There is always homecoming every years that is so exciting with a week full of fun activities for faculty and students.
Food and Dining There is a campus card available for all full time students, which allows them to dine on campus and purchase food while walking from class to class. There are a variety of options to choose from such as Chick fila, fresh salads, or grilled food. So, whenever your feeling hungry there are several choices to choose from and with the support of local restaurants students can get a discount price just by showing their student campus card.
Dorm Life Out of all my years at UAB, I have never stayed on campus. However, students who do stay on campus have several amenities to accommodate them. Also, most of the dorms have parking deck for students who live on campus.
Academic Rigor The academic rigor for the University of Alabama at Birmingham is very high because they want nothing but the best for prospective students as they embark on their journey of a future career. Therefore, students have to work hard and study in order to be successful. It is very helpful to be apart of study groups and be well prepared for exams.
Tips for prospective students Future tips for prospective students would be to first choose a major that you are comfortable with pursuing. Second, always meet with your academic advisor during each school term. Finally, enjoy your time in college!
In three sentences The University of Alabama in Birmingham is a very diverse school with plenty of opportunities for part time and full time students. Older students such as myself will be able to adapt and have the accessibility to various helping tools within their academic career. As a UAB Blazer, I have been very blessed to embark on the journey of coming one step closer to pursing my goal of becoming a dentist.

Greek Life Greek life differs from that of a larger university. It allows for commitment to both Greek members as well as friends outside of the Greek system. However, it still provides all of the benefits associated with Greek life. Typically though, people do not live in the fraternity or sorority housing.
Clubs and Activities There is an exuberant amount of organizations and clubs to join for whatever your heart desires.
Great for these types of students This college provides great opportunities for actively involved and leading students
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Honors have a type of tradition that compares the various programs to the houses in Harry Potter. Global Community Leadership (GCL) is Gryffindor, University Honors Program (UHP) is Slytherin, Sci-Tech is Ravenclaw, and Experiential Learning Scholars Program (ELSP) is Hufflepuff.
Bang for the buck I believe that this was worth the price because the campus provided a great transition into college and I obtain great material from my classes.
What to do for fun The Green is an awesome way to meet people and join in a pick up game of Frisbee or soccer. The Rec Center is great for any sport or exercise and even has a lazy river. Categories Comments Campus Safety Anywhere you go, you are bound to see a UAB police officer. They are everywhere! Also, there are many HELP posts on campus to ensure your safety any time of the day or night.
Greek Life Greek life at UAB seems to be fairly typical, minus all the frat houses. There are a lot of Greeks. The Greek organizations tend to have some sort of event periodically to attract the student body, usually fun stuff. The stomp downs are amazing!
Clubs and Activities There are numerous clubs and activities on campus, too many to count. There are many different types of clubs: religious, academic, social, etc. Many of the clubs and organizations have events that attract all types of students and try to get everyone involved.

Bang for the buck UAB is a university that actually prepares you for the real world. By the time you're getting into the classes that are geared towards your degree, you would have learned so much already. A degree coming from UAB speaks volumes, especially in a research science or medical field. You would definitely be getting a lot of bang for your buck. It is totally worth every penny.

The rec has a two- story rock climbing wall, whirl pool, lazy river, four full basketball courts, a multi- use court, racquetball courts, fitness studios, and of course a two level work out area. Also, there is usually some kind of student life event going on to rescue students from the stresses of class and boredom.

There's Taco Bell, Chick- fil- a, a grill, a bistro, Einstein Bagels, Starbucks, a diner, and more. If you're a burger lover or sushi enthusiast, UAB is the place for you!
Dorm Life Dorm life in the residence halls are as good as it can get. Clean areas, nice rooms, and friendly residence assistants make for a great on- campus living experience.

Studying does really help! The professors are always open to assist students during office hours, so take advantage.

What to do for fun There's a game shop down on Five-Points South called Mad Doctor Games, if you like tabletop, magic the gathering, or board games, check the place out!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are UAB police all over campus and an Emergency alert system set up.
Great for these types of students City lovers
Bang for the buck Graduate school has been expensive but I absolutely believe that the amount of money I had paid for my education does not come close to the experience and the quality of education that I have received at UAB. My professors and advisers have been amazing. Student services, Financial Aid, and Graduate services have been very helpful. Even people not grading me have been a tremendous help!
What to do for fun Visit Birmingham landmarks including historical landmarks, museums, Vulcan Park, Rail Road Park, Five Points South, Avondale, The Alabama theater. Birmingham has plenty of fun things to do and see as well as live music every week!
Food and Dining The Caf is very good with a lot of choices, but there is also plenty of dining options surrounding UAB.
Dorm Life The dorms are in the city and I hear they are very nice. They are apartment style dorms.
Academic Rigor The Education Department and the English Department has brilliant professors and difficult classes.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you know exactly when and what you are paying for. UAB tends to put extra money (financial aid) on a Blazerbucks card to help pay for books. However, sometimes that is not necessary and you can opt out of this service. You may have to pay for a parking pass. You have to pay early for UAB.
In three sentences At first, I did not like University of Alabama at Birmingham because I went to undergrad at a small liberal arts college. I was somewhat overwhelmed at first. My professors and advisers have been wonderful!

Categories Comments What to do for fun Birmingham offers a city full of different experiences such as hiking along the mountains, dancing at night clubs, or relaxing in the lazy river at the UAB Recreation Center. There are many activities the college and city offers entertain students.
Food and Dining The food is usually very tasty, however, the choices used for the Meal Plans are not very healthy. The healthy choices that are available are limited. Overall, however, the dining experiences are pleasant.
Dorm Life The dorm layout is excellent. Camp Hall is more like an apartment than dorm with very friendly staff, neighbors, and UAB police to protect the students.
Academic Rigor The classes are not that challenging so far. This may be a good thing, but perhaps many of the classes and programs offered for music majors are not developed.
Tips for prospective students Improve time-management, organization, study, and budgeting skills. Managing time is very important, especially for music majors. Students may often get caught up in activities and socializing, and then later get stressed as he or she faces the piled up homework.
In three sentences UAB is surrounding by very friendly students and faculty. The campus is easy to navigate. There are always campus-led or student-led activities going on each week.

Academic Rigor Academically you are goiing to have to study hard, participate in class discussions and do group projects, it's not a bad thing it just takes effort.

Categories Comments What to do for fun UAB always has a program for students to either kick back and have fun or learn about something that they are interested in. They celebrate all cultures and offer activities for everyone to learn about new cultures. The activities can range from a lecture to a party on the green with a firework after show. If you are living on campus you will always have something to do.
Food and Dining UAB offers a multitude of eating places for all types of students meaning vegetarians, health nuts, and junk eaters. The options of eatery are spread across the campus to ensure that access is available to all students. All you need is either dining dollards (which is required) or a meal plan (which is optional depending on your living conditions) and you can dine at any eatery that you please although the hours for each place does vary.
Dorm Life Dorm life is fun and at other times very tedious as far as having guests are concern. The dorm offers a ton of activities to do and makes sure to keep students posted about upcoming events for the whole campus. They are very invested in your safety which is why they are strict when it comes to guests you must check in and check out your guest to ensure that they are kept track of. This process can be tedious but for the most part it is doable.
Academic Rigor UAB is a school that means academic business. The professors are confident in your ability to take the initiative to do your work outside the classroom. They offer many ways to get help including Supplemental instruction, tutoring, and access to your teachers outside the classroom via email. They expect you to get your work done but will also offer a helping hand when need be. Although the course load at times can be hectic it is worth it because you will walk out of the class knowing the information if you apply yourself.
Tips for prospective students When applying for a school you should always look to ensure that it fits your major. For students interested in the medical field this is the perfect school although the competition is very fierce. Joining scholar programs that UAB offers can really give you a push in the right direction it is not just a case of it looks nice on a resume it actually puts you above students and in some cases gurantee you into the program that you choose.
In three sentences University of Alabama at Birmingham is a culturally diverse college with infamous learning oppurtunities for all ages. It offers plenty of activities for student of any age or interest to participate in order to create a fun learning environment. Attending UAB although it can be for any student it is mostly geared towards medically inclined students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Nighttime is very dangerous. Walking around during night even on campus, you might want to tag along with a friend all the time. Since its in the downtown area. There are few homeless and occasional weird people.
Great for these types of students Students who don't have cars may be good to live here. Everywhere in downtown can be a walking distance.
What to do for fun There are school events, but it is not a big events compared to other schools. It is in the center of downtown Birmingham, so you need to be careful during nights. There are few nightclubs that are conveniently 5 mins away from school.
Food and Dining There is not much variety. You pretty much can eat everything of the schools food without overlapping in about a month.
Dorm Life I have only visited the dorms. It is okay just don't expect too much. It all differs to everyone's personality.
Academic Rigor I am a transfer student and I would believe that UAB is academically challenging. Meet the right teachers and it may be easy.
In three sentences University of Alabama at Birmingham has a very well established education towards its medical, business, and engineering.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are campus police everywhere you look, to insure that the campus remains safe. Also there are Help Buttons at most of the places on campus, which can be pushed if you feel as though you are in an unsafe situation and need assistance.
What to do for fun As far as on campus fun goes, there is the UAB recreation center. It is a beautiful facility and there are a number of things to do there like rock wall climbing, swimming, racket ball, air hockey, ping pong, and billiards. Different committees also host on campus events and most of the time there is free food, which is always a plus for a college student. Also there are shopping malls not too far away like Brookwood mall, The Summit, and Riverchase Galleria just to name a few.
Food and Dining The food is excellent! I have been to other college campuses and there food does not compare to what UAB has to offer. UAB has a variety of different dining options including: The Commons on the Green, The Diner, Starbucks, Chick-fil-a, taco bell, and a few others. Having diversity in dining options insures that you will not get bored with the available food choices. The food is of very good quality as well.
Dorm Life The dorms are very nice at UAB. I've visited 3 dorms and every one of them has its own unique qualities. Some are apartment style and others are more suite-like. The Resident Assistants in the dorm are always there when needed and truly fulfill there duties. Every now and then certain dorms throw fun events which give opportunities to meet new people and possibly form new friendships.
Academic Rigor Depending on your major, the course load can be pretty rigorous. As long as you are serious about your schooling and put in the optimum amount of study hours to achieve the best grades, then it is very possible.
Tips for prospective students My number one tip is to come in focused on your studies because that is primarily why you are there. It is okay to go out and have fun, in fact sometimes it is needed in order to maintain balance in your life, but just know when to say no to things that may inhibit studying when it is needed. Remain focused, study, have fun, put all you can into your coursework and make the most of your college experience.
In three sentences So far I find the UAB to be a wonderful school. The course load can be rigorous, but there are professors there that actually care and will help lead and guide you if asked. The campus is beautiful and the location is great.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus is safe as long as you do not go out alone at night off the actual campus, which is easy to do since the campus is integrated with the city of Birmingham. Just stick to the buddy system at night and UAB is actually pretty safe despite what you might have heard.
Greek Life Despite there being a few Greek sororities and fraternities, Greek life is not as big of a presence at UAB compared to the other universities in Alabama. If Greek life is what you are interested in, I recommend the University of Alabama or Auburn.
Clubs and Activities There a million clubs to join at UAB, the difficult part is just finding them. Your best bet is to join BSYNC and join them online.
Great for these types of students UAB is great for international relation majors, pre-med, pre-dental, and any science major. Its also great for students looking for an urban and thriving city life style with a diverse population.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Green is a hangout place for students on campus as well as where all school sponsored events happen. Some people will even hang up their hammocks on the light poles and study there all day.
Bang for the buck The classes definitely are but the textbooks are not. Most of the books I purchased I did not even use, so wait til the class starts to buy the book unless you know for a fact that that book will be used from a friend. The meal plan also is not worth it unless you live in Blazer Hall since you do not have a kitchen there.
What to do for fun There are a lot of free events on the green like concerts, free food, obstacle courses, so life is never boring on campus. They are also always showing movies around campus. There is a great dollar theater nearby if you have a car. Also there are really nice restaurants and eighteen and up clubs if you just walk five minutes into Five Points. There is definitely a lot to do for fun in Birmingham.
Food and Dining Your first year at UAB, they require you to buy the meal plan. The Commons on the Green and the Diner are great the first few weeks, but then it all seems to taste the same. The HUC has Taco Bell and Chick Fil A, which provide the sense of fast food. If you want to walk a lot , the best place to eat is Zebi's which has yummy flatbreads and soups, but is the farther from campus. Overall, food and dining is average so stock up on microwavable foods for the dorm.
Dorm Life For freshman, your options consist of Blazer Hall and Camp Hall. Blazer is a great dorm-style place to live if socialization and group studying is your niche, whereas Camp is a comfy apartment style place to live if you prefer to be work alone and cook, since it has a stove.
Academic Rigor UAB is always pushing its students to strive for success. Its classes are challenging, but enough so that you are still learning. You definitely work for the A's in every class. I am in one of the Honor's Programs, Global Community Leadership Honors so I definitely get challenged every day.
Tips for prospective students UAB is one of the top ten schools for medical research, so you should definitely apply if you are pre-med. It is also one of the top schools for diversity in the nation, so cultural exposure is to be expected. In the south, this school is definitely one of a kind, so if you are looking for an diverse, urban setting with the perks of southern charm, UAB is definitely where to go.
In three sentences The University of Alabama at Birmingham is a diverse, urban, and surprisingly green campus. This beautiful campus, with its variety of cultures, exposes its students to the world around them, in turn becoming a source of inspiration for academic success. This international university is a hub for learning making its top ranking for research everything but a surprise.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You can request a campus escort after dark to help you to your destination. There are HELP phones located all over campus. Press the big red button and campus security answers.
Greek Life The Panhellenic Council include sororites: Alpha Gamma Delta â?¢ Alpha Omicron Pi â?¢ Alpha Xi Delta â?¢ Delta Gamma. Fraternies include: Delta Sigma Phi â?¢ Lambda Chi Alpha â?¢ Pi Kappa Phi â?¢ Tau Kappa Epsilon. National Pan-Hellenic Council includes: Alpha Kappa Alpha â?¢ Alpha Phi Alpha â?¢ Delta Sigma Theta â?¢ Kappa Alpha Psi â?¢ Omega Psi Phi â?¢ Phi Beta Sigma â?¢ Sigma Gamma Rho â?¢ Zeta Phi Beta. There's also a multicultural organization, Delta Phi Omega. To be honest, greek life could be better. there could be more Panhellenic sororities and fraternities on campus. There could be better housing also.
Great for these types of students UAB is great for science majors and medical students.
What to do for fun There's the recreation center for exercising and other activities. Referring back to dorm life, there's fun stuff.
Food and Dining I have a couple requests and one is a Pizza Hut Express! Other than that, the food court is nice, consisting of Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, and a Simply To Go station for hot meals and salads. The commons diner is the main source of food for students living on-campus and even commuter students can enjoy the facility, with a meal plan or dining dollars. UAB has a good variety of dining resources and blazerbucks (money you put on your student card) can be used at restaurants downtown and surrounding locations. There are a handful of cafes and Starbucks it the go-to place.
Dorm Life The dorms are really nice and better than what I experienced at my past colleges. Depending on the dorm hall, you can have a single room or share a room and there are thermostats in the room. There's also co-ed habitation! There is always something going on with student housing, so dorm life won't be boring. The events on campus range from celebrity guest speakers, to parties to concerts to movie nights outside on the green (or green patch of lawn between the dorms and campus buildings).
Academic Rigor UAB has medium to high range of academic rigor and is appropriately challenging. It really depends on the course and the instructor or professor. Some are a little laid back, like maybe an elective, and others are quite demanding, like every class just about. Even in your field of study, there are no easy breaks; from your chemistry or calculus class to an art class.
Tips for prospective students It's very helpful to know what you're going to major in and have a backup major or minor for freshmen year. Get your pre-requirements core classes out of the way. Take classes and electives that can cross over to other majors or minors if you do decided to change your mind later on down the road.
In three sentences Overall, I'd give my college a 7 out of 10 because it's still advancing in technological and academic aspects for different majors. University of Alabama at Birmingham is a good liberal arts school, but an awesome school for medicine and science. Located in the heart of Birmingham City, it's a convenient and smart choice to soak up the urban culture while obtaining a formal education.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck If you do not have somewhat of a plan in mind of being financially able to attend Uab, then you may want to consider it, The tuition and fees can get rather high. So one may want to consider scholarships, loans, grants, etc., to ease financial strain if any.
What to do for fun There are many different organizations that can be joined to stay involved. Joining organizations and using on campus sites can truly entertain a college student.
Food and Dining Since Uab is located at the heart of Birmingham, Al, there are numerous options. Dining options are available all over campus where cash, Blazerbucks, Dining dollars. and Meal plan are accepted.
Dorm Life Dorm life is pretty good. The system by which they operate is very thought out and organized. Options that range in style and price vary and are definitely available upon request.
Academic Rigor In my opinion, Uab is rather competitive. Due to the diversity, there are people with various backgrounds that each bring something new to the table. It is up to the student to focus in order to better excel and to become recognized.
Tips for prospective students Uab tends to work and focus a good bit of attention toward incoming freshmen. I would highly recommend looking into scholarships and studying well for standardized tests in order to ease financial strain while considering or attending the school.
In three sentences Uab is one of the greatest schools in the U.S., especially if you are considering on entering into medicine after completing your undergraduate studies. It is by far one of the more diverse schools in the country. Overall, it is a great school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Police are constantly roaming the campus just to make sure nothing is going on. From time to time they may appear bored and overattentive but they're on alert. We've only had one security issue so far this year and within 30 seconds the police was there to control the situation. The campus police even give classes on self-defense. There's also Help phones all across campus.
Greek Life There's a larger Greek life here than most expect. Pledging is a huge deal here; it's a campus wide event on the green.
Clubs and Activities UAB has over 150 organizations and clubs. There's a large variety dealing with religion, culture, community service, politics, and even more. There's something for just about everyone. Most of the interest-based organizations are medical which may cause concern for those who aren't at UAB for medicine.
Great for these types of students UAB is for the type of student who is ambitious and willing to put the work in for success. Those who understand the importance of a community service, grades, and networking are the ones that get into Medical School.
Bang for the buck UAB is expensive, but the courses you take are worth every penny. The only thing that is not worth your money is the food.
What to do for fun The Rec Center has plenty to do with sports, workout center, and even rock climbing. The dorms also have movie rooms which is where lots of people like to chill with friends. Other than that you have to be creative and think of something to do for fun.
Food and Dining Burgers and fried foods is at just about every campus restaurant. Even the Commons on the Greens is supposed to give a variety of foods, yet they have just about the same thing every night. There's few vegetarian and health options, but not many. Buying groceries is the wisest thing.
Dorm Life The dorms are well maintained with nice furniture. They also have 24 hour maintenance crew who can help with any problems. The RA's are also always there to help and take there job seriously. Everyone's dorm life is different though, depending on which dorm you reside in. Camp Hall (one of the freshman dorms) has a family atmosphere because there's a maximum amount of 300 students. Whereas, Blazer Hall is a more traditional campus dorm because it has over 700 students.
Academic Rigor UAB is a very academically, concentrated university. Normally you would assume that core courses (English, History, Art, etc.) are easy, however UAB challenges you to learn in every course. The professors also challenge you with strict attendance policies and hard exams. UAB believes in knowledge and if you have to study 10 hours every day to get into medical school then you'll study 10 hours a day.
Tips for prospective students Apply for as many scholarships as possible because UAB is an expensive university. The UAB National Alumni website offers many scholarships to freshman. Also get to know as many people as possible. Networking is really important if you want a future job or reference. Staying on top of your grades is also important. UAB is way harder than it seems.
In three sentences UAB is a university that challenges students to work hard and earn their degree. The large diversity on campus also creates an academic atmosphere as you learn about different cultures across the world. If you aren't willing to work for the knowledge then UAB isn't for you.

Categories Comments Campus Safety One of the best I have seen yet.
Greek Life The Greek Life is here at UAB but not overpowering like at some of the bigger state schools.
Clubs and Activities Can't say to much about them but they do have a lot of activities on the green.
Great for these types of students People who are all around students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Can't share any yet just because I haven't been there long enough to learn any.
Bang for the buck I think for the money UAB is probably one of the best schools in the state of Alabama just because you get everything out of college and you won't be in debt once you get out.
What to do for fun There is an enormous amount of things to do on campus. From going to the Rec Center to rock climb, swim, or work out; to playing any number of intramural sports on the green.
Food and Dining Most of the food on campus is actually really good.
Dorm Life Can't really say much about the dorm life since I didn't live on campus but when I would visit my friends everything seemed very nice and well maintained.
Academic Rigor For me it wasn't to challenging because it was my first semester of engineering but this semester I bet will be more challenging because of the heavier course load and more opportunities that will present themselves this year.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to make good friends early that will help you stay on track. On the flip side of that don't get so bogged down in your studies to have some fun around the city and on the green.
In three sentences UAB so far has been an enriching environment for me to be successful because of everything it has to offer its students. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs to help the students succeed in their respected future work places by offering co-ops, shadowing programs, and sometimes some on site work. UAB also has one of the most multicultural schools I have ever been to and I would have to say it is pretty cool meeting people from different countries.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is great at UAB. Campus police can be reached at anytime of day or night!
Great for these types of students UAB is especially great for students looking for jobs in Medicine, Music, Education. UAB is also perfect for students seeking a challenge and want to have impressive qualities on a resume.
Bang for the buck UAB is not very expensive. It all depends on how many hours you take, and what classes you take.
What to do for fun The recreation center is open to all students at UAB free of charge. There is swimming, rock climbing, basketball, indoor track, work-out equipment, camping, hiking, you name it! The rec center has plenty of fun activities to do. Athletic events are also very fun to attend.
Food and Dining Food and dinning is great at UAB. There is a wide variety of places to eat, and menus to choose from. Being in the city also makes food a plus. There are several off-campus restaurants that accept blazer bucks and dinning dollars. Dinning stays open as late at 2am!! So no matter what time it is, there is always somewhere and something delicious to eat.
Dorm Life Dorm life is amazing at UAB. I was very nervous about living on campus at first, but when I arrived, the residence assistants and people in charge of the dorms were very helpful with everything. They send out reminders of fun on campus activities and volunteer activities for residence to get involved on campus. It is also very safe. Only those who have a campus card can enter at leisure. Once inside the dorm, only those who have a sticker to pass the front desk on their campus card are allowed to pass the front desk. Dorm life is one of the pluses of UAB's campus. Dorms are comfortable and you are paired with roommates who are similar to you by filling out a survey. If you and your roommate are not working out or getting along, you are given the chance to change roommates to someone who you can get along with better.
Academic Rigor Students at UAB must study for their academic classes at least an hour a day to be successful. Some classes are more of a challenge for some students than others. It all varies upon what courses were taken on the high school level and how diligent a student is. It is a very good idea to write down a list of academic goals and think about how they can be achieved-this helped me to make all A's and obtain a 4.0 GPA my first semester and I still make goals so that I can stay organized and on track. UAB has some of the best academic programs in the country and the professors are open and helpful to all students who put forth an effort to succeed. Although the courses at UAB are difficult, diligence, concentration, and interaction with professors makes it much easier to succeed in classes.
Tips for prospective students Campus visits are a great idea when considering the University of Alabama at Birmingham-UAB. When on campus as a student, get involved. There are a numerous amount of clubs, volunteering, and activities available for students.
In three sentences The University of Alabama at Birmingham is a great school. It is very diverse in the number of majors and minors that are allowed, and the number of different racial backgrounds. What to do for fun Pick up a black and white for local community events, or enjoy the parks around downtown birmingham. There is also a lot of history in Birmingham that is fun to learn about.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The University of Alabama at Birmingham is located near downtown Birmingham, but as long as you stay within the campus boundaries, I feel safe. But no matter where you go, there is always going to bad people so there is always going to be some rate of crime. But the UAB police force is good about keeping that rate down even though the campus is located in a high danger level area.
Food and Dining The food at UAB is pretty good. The only downside is that most of the resturant areas at UAB close fairly early and the only one open late is the Diner. But, like the name implies, the Diner mainly only sells diner food which isn't the most healthy thing to eat at 10:30 at night.
Dorm Life Dorm life is one of my personal favorite experiences about college. I am able to make new friends and be able to be on my own to see if I can take care of myself without the guidance of my parents. It allows me to see how truly grown up I can be and how mature I truly am.
Academic Rigor Most of the freshmen core classes aren't too bad in their difficulty level, but the higher level the classes become the harder and more time you have to spend on each subject to be able to succeed.
Tips for prospective students College is not the same as high school. You cannot procrastinate and still expect to do well. As a student, you must learn how to manage your time and understand that concept of prioritizing and actively listening to your professors, because what they're teaching you is not useless information.
In three sentences The University of Alabama at Birmingham is an amazing school to attend and grow as a person. The school understands that for a person to succeed in the real world, it's not all about test scores and grades. The faculty and staff are all very kind and truly wants all their graduates to succeed in life.

Categories Comments Campus Safety AMAZING!!!!! Safest place I have ever been
What to do for fun UAB has many student organizations that throw all types of student events throughout the year. Every week there is something to do and it provides safe and on campus fun. Also, Greek life host many events and they are equally just as fun.
Food and Dining UAB provides its student and faculty with plenty of food options throughout the day and night. The choices range from different foods from all over the world. The only thing they lack is a larger variety of healthier foods such as fruits and non fried foods.
Dorm Life Dorm life is expensive and personally not for me. The lifestyle there is very fun and you meet a bundle of new and interesting people from all over the world. They do enforce their policies so that way students do remain safe as well as treating the students like adults unlike some other schools with thing such as visitation curfew.
Academic Rigor The classes are hard even when it is a subject you feel confident in. They do not make the classes anything like high school. You do have to study and classes are very demanding and make it difficult for extra activities, but it is manageable and possible.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you stay on top of all paperwork that needs to be done, for UAB will take their sweet time with getting your paperwork finished and getting you notified. Utilize all of UAB's academic support programs they become your best friend in any area you find challenging. Also, utilize all of UAB's non academic supporters, especially Mrs. Leslie Riley
In three sentences I would consider UAB an amazing school especially for people considering a medical field. The academic program is amazing, but the support system for students can use a little bit more work. Overall UAB is a well worth school of attendance.
