Tips for prospective students Live in Residence first year! It is a great way to meet friends and get involved on campus.
Bang for the buck Calgary is more expensive then the western b-schools ($2k more)
Did enjoy being here It was a little intimidating moving to Calgary at first. Being an Edmontonian, Calgary has an image of being more redneck, but really, Calgary is very cosmopolitan city. It offers a fast-paced lifestyle in the core but is compensated by the opportunity to slow-down and connect back to earth in the mountains (1 hour by car). I was able to spend weekends hiking, canoeing, climbing, snowboarding and skiing with school and with friends on our own. \ As well the city boasts many great festivals throughout the year including Folk Fest, festival of lights, global fest, Lilac Fest, and more.
Did learn a lot Wow! This school is phenomenal! I went to the Haskayne School of Business at the U of C and I loved it so much, I didn't want to leave. I chose the b-school (instead of UBC or U of A) because of the small class sizes (60 in the first two years, 20-30 in the last two years), the direct entrance from HS, its involvement in the oil and gas industry in Calgary and of course... the location! And classes are only Monday-Thursday so students have the option of group work on Fridays. But I really did learn a lot. In my senior year I was picked for the Inter-Collegiate Business Case Competition team which is held at Queen's University. I was mentored and coached for a full year by Dr. Bob Schulz (amazing!). My partner and I went from knowing nothing about the field we were competing in to being experts and placing second out of 40 of the world's top b-schools! This same coach led a group of undergraduate students to place second to Stanford MBA's at the Hult Global Case Competition Regionals in San Francisco! I also got to enjoy niche classes like Labour Arbitration, which included 10 undergrads, 6 MBA's and one JD student. This class was offered in a condensed format - every Friday for 8 hours for 6 weeks. During the class, we had professional arbitrators come in and arbitrate our closing arguments! The class was also taught by a very well sought out Canadian Arbitrator (Allen Ponak). Outside of the classroom, I joined a few clubs or took part in club activities. I joined Students In Free Enterprise, which helped students discover and engage their entrepreneurial management skills. I took part in wind farm tours and oil and gas lectures offered through the Institute for Sustainable Energy Economy and Environment's Student Association. As well, I was able to partake in a variety of different conferences and seminars offered through the Commerce Undergraduate Society.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students All types of students, the University of Calgary is quite diverse and where everyone is accepted!
Am enjoying being here The University is great, but Calgary weather can get a bit cold in the winter.
Am learning a lot The Nursing program has taught me a lot about health care, past, present and future. The University is helping me grow as an individual.

Bang for the buck Tuition is a bit on the expensive side but the Student's Union is trying their best to keep it affordable.

Great for these types of students Slackers and people who love hipsters.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Bermuda Shorts Day. Get drunk during the last day of classes!
Bang for the buck Don't make me laugh. Everything is expensive on campus.
What to do for fun The Den. You must go to Thursden.
Food and Dining Minimal selection. Asian food only for the most part.
Dorm Life I've never lived in a dorm. But there are a lot on campus.
Academic Rigor Not very intensive, some teachers are laughable.
Tips for prospective students Wait until you know spicifically what you want to do because there are much better schools out there for just as little money.
In three sentences The University of Calgary is expanding in all of the right places but without the proper sized study space. The Art's faculty is extremely helpful but I have had problems with some teachers. Not a school to complete anything higher than a BA at.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are 24 hour service where two people (1 male and 1 female) will accompany you to walk anywhere within 10 minutes of the campus to your car or dorm. The security respond time is faster than 911 for most of the time.
Clubs and Activities There are over 200 clubs that are for almost anything. If there isn't one, you can create your own club! The clubs have very enriching student life, opportunities for volunteer and employment, and even scholarships
Great for these types of students In academic, it's great for engineers, medicine, and business. In student life, it's great for people who like trying new things. There are new stuff every week on campus. In research, there are some of the world's top researchers in this university you can work with. There are thousands of dollars in funding as well for you to do research. In social life, there are on campus bars and clubs for the owls.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The BSD, literally the biggest party of the year and in the entire city. The Student Union throws a party at the end of every school year to celebrate. More than 20,000 people attend every year! There are lots of other traditions for people live in residence.
What to do for fun Thursden. Every Thursday, there is a special night for students to party at the on-campus club. Join student clubs that offer tons of fun events Watch any varsity games for free Go to the sports facilities and do whatever sports you love Join intramural sports Annual faculty dodge ball game Annual faculty Improv competition Annual Frostbite - a whole week of fine with amazing prize such as a free weekend skiing trip
Food and Dining There are four restaurants/bars. The Den turns into a club on Thursdays. The Black Lounge is a great place to chill. The Last Defense Lounge is perfect for sports events and higher class dining. The on-campus hotel restaurant offers fine dining. There are two major dining centres. One for people in residence and one for everyone. There are more than 10 fast food/food vendors in the student building.
Dorm Life The first year dorm is tiny, but you get to make lots of friends and have some great bonding with other people on the floor. Later on, you live in way nicer buildings!
Academic Rigor The university have lots of top researchers in Canada and the world. The quality of teaching varies among each faculty. The overall teaching quality is fair. Most professors are very approachable and do care about students grades and student life.
Tips for prospective students 1. Use any resources on campus whenever you need them 2. Make lots of friends for notes and textbooks 3. Join the leadership programs 4. Talk to professors, they are not that scary 5. Switch your high school mentality to college mentality 6. Take workshops on how to prevent procrastination, setting goals and manage your time
In three sentences The University of Calgary has a beautiful campus in the summer and winter. It has some of the award winning teaching facilities in North America and the only designated leadership office in Western Canada. It is a university for innovation, creativity, interdisciplinary study, and inquiry based learning
