Great for these types of students

UC Merced is great for students that want to help professors do special studies and want research opportunities. Due to the small but growing population, it's fairly easy to get what you want. There's also less competition when trying to apply for a job. You have a better chance to get to know your professors due to the smaller population, and going to office hours is really helpful. Again, this is a great backup school. I am attending UC Merced because I wasn't accepted to UC Berkeley, UCLA, or UC Davis. Surprisingly enough, many of my friends have been accepted to these three schools that I was rejected to, but chose to come to UC Merced for various reasons. Finally, UC Merced is great for students that like nature. The recent Leonid Meteor Shower was great to view here because there are no tall buildings like in San Francisco. The scenery is nice, and you can see mountains a 50 miles away in clear view. UC Merced is like the alternate, smaller, and newer version of UC Davis, so if you didn't get accepted to Davis, UC merced is a possible option for you.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want a fairly small populated school, UC Merced is the place for you. Of course, research more about the school and look to see if it provides the major/minor/classes that you want to pursue in your college career. Since UC Merced is still developing, new classes are being added every semester, new majors introduced yearly, and more opportunities are provided. The school expects to be double the size it is now by 2020ish. Again, do your research, and see if UCM provides things that you are looking for. Also, UC Merced is a great back up school. If you don't apply to UC Merced and have at least a 3.0 in high school, you will be requested to join what is called the Count Me In program, which is basically a request from UC Merced, saying that We noticed you didn't apply to UC Merced. How about this: We'll pay the $60 application fee for you with no strings attached, but you have to submit an application to apply to the school The program saves you $60, and pretty much guarantees your acceptance into the university. Another thing I have discovered through experience is that if you don't do the Count Me In program, and you are rejected from all the other University of California schools that you applied to, you will automatically be accepted to UC Merced and UC Riverside. Just something for you to keep in mind.

    Bang for the buck

If you live on campus, you have a $2500 balance placed on your CatCard. Your CatCard is your ID card that is used for, of course, identification purposes, and for everything else on campus--to access some doors, the key to your room (some rooms), to check out things from the library, and of course, for your meal-plan. So again, you have $2500 for the entire year, $1250 per semester. The leftover money from the $1250 from the 1st semester gets carried over to the 2nd semester, but you have to use it all up by the end of the school year, as the leftover money from 2nd semester doesn't carry onto the next year. Most people end up with a lot of money by the end of the semester (I still have $400 and there's 2 weeks of class left before the end of the semester) while others like my roommate have $47 left for the next two weeks. I ended up with a lot of money left because my parents always brought me food from home. My roommate, however, only ate the DC food, plus he spent about $30 per day worth of food. To make sure you spend just the right amount, a typical day of food should consist of only 2 meals per day, usually around $10 per meal. Meal prices can vary, but it's about $10 average. $10 for a meal...doesn't seem bad right? But in fact, it's terrible at times. Knowing that most students have no other choice but the DC food, they over-charge things. A small bag of Kettle Chips is $1.75. String cheese is $0.97. A banana is around $0.75. An English Muffin, yogurt, string cheese, and Raspberry Candied Almonds costs $8. Many people complain about the price of food here, but you just have to accept the prices. Education-wise, you pay to attend school here (assuming you weren't completely covered by financial aid) and you really do get a bang for your buck. You get a great education here. Many class sizes are restricted to 20 people per discussion section, and lectures usually consist of only 250-300 people max. It's a really small environment, great for learning. However, the trend for the past few years has been that the population of UC Merced has been doubling every year, and expects to continue doing so. However, when UC Merced is critiqued, it might be appreciated for its' small population size, and if it is shown that students perform better in much smaller population conditions, the school might decrease the amount of admissions to the school--but for now, it's definitely increasing greatly every year. You get a solid education here. This is a University of California, the 10th UC, and the 1st UC of the 21st century. Everything is pretty much new. You're truly getting what you pay for, regardless of the food situation at times.

    Am enjoying being here

This section all depends on the person and what your preferences are. Obviously, as mentioned earlier, if you simply want to learn, then there's no problem at all. However, UC Merced has some perks..some that can be good and some bad. I don't want to spoil everything for you and chase you away/convince you--I want you to form your own opinions based on facts. - UC Merced is in the middle of NOWHERE. There's really nothing to do here. Sure, there are clubs and stuff, parties here and there, the typical (if this is what you were concerned about don't worry haha). The university is about an 8 minute drive to downtown Merced, which is where all the fun is. There are a lot of places to eat in downtown Merced. From In N Out, Carl's Jr., Jack in the Box, and Sonic to Jamba Juice, Apple Bee's, Hometown Buffet, Chinese Buffets, great Indian food places, Steak Houses, BBQ places, and other Merced exclusive food places. The most popular non-partying/drinking thing to do here is go to the movies. There are 2 theaters here, one significantly bigger than the other. The bigger theater has In N Out a 5 minute walk away, while the smaller theater has the Merced Mall a 5 minute walk away and Carl's Jr a 10 minute walk away. Merced Mall is disappointing. It's not your Great Mall or Sunvalley Mall in Concord, or any other big mall. It's more like a medium sized strip with the main shopping stores. I've only been there 2 or 3 times so I can't really remember what they have, but they have some good stuff, and a food court. One troublesome thing is the transportation between UC Merced and downtown Merced. Merced has what are called CatTracks which is basically the free bus system provided for UCM students. (btw if you didn't know already, the UCM mascot is the bobcat) The problem is, it takes approximately 45 minutes to get from UCM to downtown Merced and vice-versa, when a car ride takes about 8 minutes. I've ridden the CatTracks at least 10 times this semester to get downtown and back. It was okay at first, but then I started picking up motion sickness easily, and it was really horrible. Thankfully one of my roommates was able to bring his car after Thanksgiving break. Also, another thing to note is that Freshman that are staying at the Residence Halls (aka dorms) aren't allowed to park their car at the school (aren't allowed to have a parking permit). You're only allowed to have a permit to park at the community college, which is about a 10 minute bike-ride away. The campus itself is nice. It's still fairly new, having been opened since 2005 I believe? The school is also famous for having Michelle Obama at the 08-09' Commencement Ceremony. Whenever I mentioned UC Merced to my friends in high school when I first got accepted, the majority never even heard of it. The school has a lot of opportunities for you, and a lot to offer. I almost forgot--the food. The dining center/commons (aka DC) is a non-profit organization and isn't directly connected to the UC itself (most people don't know this). Thus, a lot of people typically complain about the food here, saying common phrases such as The DC food..ugh.. or DC food again? I want some REAL food. The food here, is better than people exclaim. There is a wide variety of items to choose from. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just be very brief about the food. There's the grill where you can order your hot dogs, burgers, fries, and other items. The Asian section has rice/noodle bowls. The Mexican section has nachos, quesadillas, burritos, and other items. There's a salad bar, a section to make your own sandwich, and a dessert section. There's the pizza section, hot sandwich and smoothie section, refrigerated section (with standard refrigerated foods like microwaveable burritos, string cheese, eggs, milk, yogurt, etc.). There's the Blue Plate section, which is supposedly the healthiest section and has foods that are served at a typical buffet like Hometown Buffet. Finally, there's a fruit section along with a breakfast section that has cereal, a Quiznos-style mini-oven, and your basic breakfast essentials (except for pancakes). Some of the food really is just terrible, but there's a lot of good food here that overpowers the terribleness. Overall, if you're going to school and want to get something out of it, this is the place for you. But if you're the party every weekend type of person, you might be a bit disappointed...might be.

    Am learning a lot

Obviously, just like any other school, if you put your mind to it, study, and do the work, you'll learn. Putting in effort to what you want to accomplish is the key. I am currently a freshman and am about to finish my 1st semester here. I'm taking 4 class (16 units) and it's fairly difficult, but manageable. All of my professors are great. I have no complaint about any of them whatsoever. Also, they are very reasonable, and depending on the professor/t.a., will give you some slack if you have any trouble with turning in assignments (compared to high school where if you turned in the assignment late, you got a grade down, or the professor wouldn't accept your work at all). Overall, the education here is truly top notch and a true UC education (whatever that really is). If you want to come to school to learn, this is the place for your.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to branch out will have the opportunity to at UC Merced. This university is still growing which will provide a lot of opportunities for students to make the most out of it. New clubs are always being made and just recently, a friend of mine pushed members of a committee to give her credit as a triple major. UC Merced gives students possibilities to make it their college.

    Tips for prospective students

Always visit potential colleges before making a decision and apply for as many scholarships as humanly possible so as not to take out so many loans and have to worry about them after graduation. The last thing on a student's mind should be how they will be able to pay off their student loans.

    Bang for the buck

UC Merced is quite expensive just like any other college but they do offer financial aid and have scholarships available. UC Merced also has job opportunities from Teacher's Assistant to Library Student Assistant to Catering. Also, the education a student receives at UC Merced is worth it.

    Am enjoying being here

The people here are great and very supportive and the town is small which is a definite plus if one enjoys the serenity and quiet life more than hustle and bustle. It is easy to make friends here. UC Merced is such a mesh of different people, cultures, ideas, and personalities that anyone can make friends.

    Am learning a lot

Although UC Merced may be a young, small school, the class sizes are not so large for one to be so bored and fall asleep. The teachers are so passionate about the classes that they teach and they really do care about their students. Although UC Merced does not have a lot majors compared to the other UC campuses, this gives an opportunity for other students to create these majors which will also give later students more possibilities when choosing a major.

Great for these types of students

Students who would like a university education and don't mind a quiet, low-key settlement. Students who are interested in watching something grow and change right in front of them--I would say that UCM is great for the laid-back but adventurous sort.

    Tips for prospective students

Just because they're a small university doesn't mean they'll take just anyone. Show the administrators that you're ready to work hard, and then DO work hard. Most of the teachers can recognize effort when they see it.

    Bang for the buck

It's expensive, but U.C. Merced does offer a lot of campus work-study and loan opportunities. Plus, since they have a smaller student base (for now), prospective students may have an easier time receiving the help they need.

    Am enjoying being here

This is a major case of Your mileage may vary. The University itself is very nice and modern, with facilities that are, while a little limited, very good--the fitness center and the library, in particular. The downside is, of course, that the area surrounding it isn't the most spectacular. It may get a little boring, especially if you don't have a car or a way to get around. It also doesn't have as many activities as other schools, being fairly new. Though, again, there is a greater bond with teachers (15:1 student-teacher ratio!), and the facilities that the school DOES have are top-notch.

    Am learning a lot

To be honest, it depends on what you want your major to be. U.C. Merced is still a fairly new school--thus, not all of its departments are completely staffed yet. However, the teachers that ARE there are extremely good--the Literature department in particular, though I have heard some very good thing about the history and other liberal arts departments. Also remember, though, that it's a growing school, and faculty is changing every semester--It's a lot easier to influence than most schools.

    Campus Safety

the school has its own police task force, and every student can request an escort anytime anywhere on campus. i feel very safe here.

    Greek Life

there are many greeks on campus that are always active in fundraising in creative and fun ways like kickball tournaments.

    Clubs and Activities

since the school is so new, you can start a club even as a freshman. there is a swim club, gardening, robotics, and so on.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

you have to hang out at the latern, on the first floor of the library between classes, a sip a mocha latte.

    What to do for fun

there is a completely free, bus service for all of merced. go downtown there is two movie theaters, a billiard hall, and a lake walking distance from the school where you can swim.

    Food and Dining

the dinning commons or dc is good. i would recommend the grill which makes cheeseburgers and onion rings. also, there is a salad bar, sandwich making station, as well as a soup of the day.

    Dorm Life

you definitely want to try to request a double room. the triples cost less, but they are the exact same size as the double so it gets a little cramped to have an extra person in there.

    Academic Rigor

the classes are not that hard; just try to go to every lecture, that is where most information is shared. do not be afraid to go to professor's office hours, many are really nice and want to help you.

    Tips for prospective students

try to get on campus-housing, i recomend a double room. start with the most basic meal plan, you can always add money on latter. try to explore the town of merced. there is a downtown, a mall, and a lake within really close distance.

    In three sentences

the housing on-campus is very new, every building is made of good quality. the library is huge, you can eat in it, and some areas are actually quiet. the whole campus is wireless, i can get text to my smartphone when my laundry is done washing.

Great for these types of students

Great place for those that love the smell of fresh air, who come from small towns and are terrified of culture shock, those who want something different and those who are ready to face the challenges of life.

    Tips for prospective students

Work hard, get plenty of sleep and exercise, smile everyday whether you mean it or not and your day will fly by.

    Bang for the buck

Hey Its college, believe me, it ain't cheap were ever you go. The good thing about UCM is the work opportunities are fantastic.

    Am enjoying being here

Its a great place to spend outdoors and and relax when your not cramming your head with studying and work. Other than all the other good things that come with college, the mall... no more than a small strip of nothing. Restaurants are OK, but if you have a sensitive stomach forget about it (some are good though). Campus is great and the lake is truly beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Love clearing my mind there.

    Am learning a lot

Well, I can really say that learning and getting your education is great at any school, but some people are better suited for a particular learning enviroment. UC Merced makes it easy for those that come from a small town or city. The professors are great and come from all over the University system, working one on one with students. Some classes are small enough to call it your Home Room and others are big enough you can call it my High School (a student body of 900). Over all I have learned allot about Psychology, Sociology, Writing, Stats, Music, Planets, the Environment, Plato, Pluto, and the list goes on and on...........

    Tips for prospective students

-Do NOT procrastinate [this is where most of us falter] -Time Management IS important [there's a reason behind why they keep emphasizing it during Welcome Week] -Grades are important but remember it is also important to network and get to know staffs and other students on campus -Enjoy college but remember you didn't pay $25,000+ to party hard and then be put on academic probation.

    Bang for the buck

Yes, the houses here are hella cheaper than any other place, but tuition fees will kick your butt. . . well at least it kicks mine. Like any other UCs, Merced is no exception, it's getting expensive here too. So prepare yourself, if you aren't getting a full ride scholarship, make sure you take advantage of the job opportunities they offer here. Don't hesitate or wait, get an early start and start building up your resume.

    Am enjoying being here

I come from a very busy city [DTLA] so with that said, anything aside from The Bay and LA in California is pretty much slow pace for me. But Merced is very chill, it can get boring at times but if you hang with the right people any place can be fun. The sushi places are legit, and J&R Tacos is cool too. The best part of it all is that you can rent a whole house w/pools and big yards here for the same price as a tiny *butt bedroom apartment in LA. Trust. * Apparently I can't use language that is deemed inappropriate

    Am learning a lot

Student to Professor ratio is great; I chose UC Merced over other universities I got accepted into because of this. To be honest though, it all depends on what type of person you are. We're all adults here, it is a matter of personal choice and responsibility in whether you choose to show up to classes, focus, and take that extra initiative to get to know your professors. Just because the classes are smaller here do not expect your professors to automatically take notice of you.

    Bang for the buck

I got a full ride scholarship to go to UC Merced. I live on campus this year, and so I have over a thousand dollars to spend on food per semester. I'm not a heavy eater, and I do get food from home, so I ended up with a couple hundred dollars at the end of the semester that will roll over to Spring. It's also a really nice school, being only six years old, so the equipment is still fairly new. Overall, it's not a bad investment for a college.

    Am enjoying being here

There's not much to do in Merced, unless you like going to the cinema, eating out, or riding a bicycle (there are over twenty miles of bike trail in Merced). Our Office of Student Life and our registered clubs put on a lot of neat events, and we have job fairs, organisation fairs, etc., at least once a month.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers at UC Merced are very knowledgeable in their fields, and are always open to questions. Most teachers will set up appointments if you can't make it to office hours. The library is a good place to study, and the fourth floor is a strict quiet zone for people who like to study without distractions.

Great for these types of students

There are many different personalities and types of students on this campus. I believe that UC Merced is great for anyone who likes a smaller environment and enjoys getting involved in what is going on around them. Really anyone can fit in at this school.

    Tips for prospective students

-Do your FAFSA!! -Be open to new experiences and activities -Do not be afraid to meet people -Start something new...UC Merced is a new college and any student can begin a club or other activity for present and future students to enjoy for years to come -Don't under-estimate the power of a small classroom. Get to know your professors and take advantage of the one-on-one learning

    Bang for the buck

It seems that tuition prices are on the rise all over the country. UC Merced is no exception to this. However, obtaining a degree from the University of California school system is one of the most worthwhile and rewarding things a person can do for their future. Although tuition rates are up, UC Merced is great at providing financial aid to its students. Many students enjoy the benefit of receiving aid and/or scholarships to help pay for their education. UC Merced is also fabulous at answering any and all questions that students have concerning aid opportunities. This school really does all it can to help get you through college with the least amount of debt possible.

    Am enjoying being here

Merced is still developing into a college town. Knowing this, the students and faculty put on hundreds of events each month in order to provide entertainment, fun, and social stimulation throughout the campus. There really is not a day that goes by where there is not at least one event that anyone can participate in and it really makes the college experience more exciting. Personally, I am really enjoying being at UC Merced and I am very happy that I have had the chance to attend this college before it expands into a huge, over-populated university.

    Am learning a lot

When I used to think of college, I thought of eight or nine hundred people crammed into a lecture hall listening to one man or woman ramble for hours. However, at UC Merced, the classes are much smaller than most public universities which results in a more hands-on learning experience. Before I entered college, I was sure that half of the material would be in one ear, memorized for a test, and then out the other ear. But even from my first semester of classes at UC Merced, I noticed that most of the professors are passionate about what they are teaching and care more about what is learned than what is regurgitated onto a test. This technique of teaching has caused me to learn more in one semester than I probably did in a year or two of high school. Of course, you cannot expect to barely pay attention, ignore homework, and still expect to learn more than ever simply because you are in a hands-on environment. However, if you take advantage of this type of atmosphere, you can expand your education and learn more than you ever thought possible.

Great for these types of students

If you like a small town environment, this school is for you. If you like a low student population (currently we have around 4000 students here), this school is for you. If you want to do research as an undergrad, this school is for you. If you want small class sizes, this school is for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Prepare to have to find ways to alleviate boredom. This is a small town. There is plenty to do, you just have to find it. Or create it! There are lots of opportunities to succeed and create and fail and learn and have fun. Take as many as you can, but don't spread yourself too thin.

    Bang for the buck

The school doesn't offer British Lit classes right now which is a bummer because that is the major i wish to pursue. However, I am working on my minors, too, so I don't really mind waiting to see if the classes I want will be offered.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the small town vibe and the hugely diverse student population. I meet people from all over in Merced and I have made some amazing friends. Not only that, but I have been able to help start quite a few clubs and traditions as a student here because the school is so new.

    Am learning a lot

Although this school doesn't have exactly the classes I want to take for my major, I am getting a lot of learning done. I am working extra hard on my minors, just in case they become majors before I graduate!

Great for these types of students

If the student is smart, wants to learn and wants a school where the location is perfect, then UC Merced is a perfect match.

    Tips for prospective students

The school is new but great. There are students who got a G.P.A of 4.0 or higher and are coming here because its the school's location. On campus there are many clubs like the Democrats club or the Republicans and they (me included) campaigned for candidates.

    Bang for the buck

I had to pay 29000 dollars and its a lot of money but its worth it. Each student is given about 1000 dollars in something called Cat Card and the we can buy pretty much anything we want on campus with it.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here. Everyone at school is super nice. The campus itself is super clean. The cleaning people, clean the campus and the halls every single day. The school is far from the town of Merced but theres free buses taking students every single hour, sometimes in less than 10 mins at a time.

    Am learning a lot

Yes, i am learning a lot at UC Merced. UC Merced is new but it has a lot of tutoring for about any subject you can think of. If your writing skills suck (like mine) they can help you out. In each course the student will get out of that class learning something new.

Fun, loving academically engaged students. Its a diverse campus and just about any student can feel comfortable and at home while attending this school! Come and join the Bobcat family :)

    Tips for prospective students

1)If you will be living in the dorms, watch what you eat. It is to just go to the grill in the DC (dinning commons) all the time. But, its no always the healthiest. 2) Everyone should make use of the gym! It has a lot of equipment and tons of different classes for everyone to take. I personally love taking Yoga with Carrie. Its so calming and a real workout. Phew! 3) Go to as much as you can! Everyone is friendly and loves to meet new people at events. Almost every event has free food and no (if any, minimal) cost! No excuses. Just go! 4) Make use of the Peer advisors! They are helpful with your studies and where you want to go with your major and career. Totally nonjudgemental. They understand that just because you are a UC student, you don't know everything. 5) Have fun! UCM is a great place to be even if Cal, UCLA, or UC Davis was your dream. There is a lot to do and tons of people and opportunities for your to succeed. Don't forget to take pictures!

    Bang for the buck

Academically, this school is solid. I am getting a UC education without the competition for classes like I would have to at any other UC. Also, I am not just a number to my professors. In fact, Mr. Lambert, a writing professor, has become a mentor and friend to me. Though, it is cheaper to live off campus and the pain of eating at dining common hours is not an issue. Otherwise, between the bus system, the two concerts a year, multiple social, academic, and other events, this school is much better than anyone really thinks it is.

    Am enjoying being here

I love attending UCM. They make fun of themselves by having UCM Cow Tipping Team t-shirts to buy. They have LOTS of clubs and activities on campus and off. While living on campus, it is easy to get to town because they have an incredible bus system that can get you just about anywhere the students need to go. Plus the dorms are so close together, it is easy to befriend people in the other dorms.

    Am learning a lot

UC Merced is the smallest UC, and is fortunate enough that it is so small that if students attend office hours enough, the professors can easily get to know you on a first name basis. They also have a wide variety of courses available in the sciences, history, social sciences, and languages. The course curriculum helps students gear specially to their majors and emphasis.

Great for these types of students

Students who are trying to get away from the city life. Students who enjoy peace and quiet. Students who don't mind small places, with a small amount of people.

    Tips for prospective students

Give UC Merced a chance, and most likely you will be surprised. Try and keep and open mind, and just wait to see what the outcome will look like.

    Bang for the buck

Just depends on how you look at it.

    Am enjoying being here

Many students dread that UC Merced is a small campus in a rural area, but the location of it, and the size of it is perfect for others. The small numbers of students allow more student interaction when going to and from class because we all walk through the same path. The fact that Yosemite Lake is only a walking distance away is a plus as well.

    Am learning a lot

UC Merced has lived up to its standards of a University. UC Merced gives students the opportunity to learn as they go. Whether it be during lecture or outside of class, everyday is a new learning experience. The great thing about UC Merced is that you do not just have to learn in the classroom; the fact that the school is fairly new gives many new students a chance to learn the process of founding a new club or organization on campus!

Great for these types of students

UCM is great for students who need a little bit more attention from professors. Or great for students who arent quite as independent as others may be. It is much easier to keep your head above water in a smaller setting than in a larger. It is always better to be a big fish in a small pond than to be a small fish in a big pond.

    Tips for prospective students

My advice to all prospective students it to tour the campus before deciding. To try to take a car with them (even if it is parked at the remote parking lot), to make a lot of friends right off the bat, to get involved in clubs and sports, to stay busy, take advantage of all the resources available and MOST IMPORTANTLY, choose very very very carefully when deciding on a roommate/roommates. This is probably the single MOST important decision when it comes to determining your happiness at UCM.

    Bang for the buck

UC Merced offers a lot of really neat services that are all included in the price of tuition. Things such as; the bus system known as Catracks, the gym, the work out classes (all of which provide equipment), sometimes they even have free concerts (this year 2 very well-known bands played at UCM, and was completely free for all students), there is always some kind of concert or play or show going on. Then there are the clubs and sports as well. The price of any college is expensive but with the right amount of financial aid and scholarships anything is possible. Not to mention you are getting much smaller class sizes which is a very nice benefit when it comes to choosing class schedules and succeeding in class. At the university they like to say that you are getting a private school education at public school prices because of the small intimate classroom settings.

    Am enjoying being here

UC Merced is in the middle of nowhere..literally. You look outside your dorm window and you are surrounded by cows. Though this makes for beautiful night skies and amazing scenery on a nice day. However, the weather is not so great. It is way too hot in the summer and way too cold in the winter. And it seems like there is never an in between, but you learn to deal with that. As for the town, well it is a little dirty and not so nice but it is better than staying on campus all the time and the bus system is very convenient. Since there isnt always a lot of stuff to do the gym is usually pretty busy but they have some really great work out classes and its a good way to meet people, relieve stress, and stay in shape and healthy. As for the Dining Hall, well the food gets to be pretty unappealing after about the third week in a row of eating it. There really isnt any variety and the foods not the best but there is usually a little something for everyone and you get plenty of money on your meal plan so most people dont really need to worry about running out, in fact a lot of people actually have money left over at the end, the only down part is it is totally non-refundable. Over all UC Merced has it's strong points and its weak points but then again so does every school. If it appeals to one person it might not appeal to the next. I highly recommend touring the campus and talking with current students before deciding.

    Am learning a lot

I think that the fact that UC Merced is a smaller campus compared to others due to the fact that is a much younger campus is a huge benefit to students attending. Smaller class sizes make classroom atmosphere much more personal. You really get to know your teachers and classmates. Teachers are also much more available to you during class along with office hours which are usually very convenient. There is a wide variety of classes offered, though not quite as large as some of the bigger schools but UCM will get there soon enough when the student population rises. Over all I think that the education I am receiving at UC Merced is wonderful.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who love the environment, who are looking for a not so big or small school, who need that extra attention from professors, who are ready to bring new ideas to the campus and grow with it. Anyone who's ready to be a Bobcat !

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to ask for help, or go to your professors office hours. Make lot's of friends and be friendly it really helps and it gives you something to do.

    Bang for the buck

UC Merced is a new school so it has a lot of money to offer to it's students. That's one of the main reasons why I decided to go to UC Merced. They find a way to make it very affordable.

    Am enjoying being here

Although I'm from a big city like Los Angeles I still love being at Merced. Merced is a very small city and the campus is located a couple miles away from the city. These are things that you'll get use to later on I don't find them as big of issues of to why not like the school. Students in Merced are friendly and since it's a small school you get the chance to really know a lot of people. I also like how diverse of campus it is. You can also find people from all over the world.

    Am learning a lot

Yes. Teachers here actually know you by name. The classes are small compared to any other UC out there. Many of us when in high school were told by teachers that college will not be like high school were the teachers go through your homework or essays. Well in Merced the professors always have time to go over your essays and even homework. They are always available in office hours to help.

    Campus Safety

This is a very safe Campus. They watch out for us and Cudo's to the School and Local Police.

    Greek Life

We are a young campus so the Greek Life is building. We have most of the major Frats. I am a founding member of Phi Alpha Delta and belong to Kappa Sigma as well.

    Clubs and Activities

If we don't have it you are encourage to start your own club! I helped to start a Monopoly Club.

Great for these types of students

We are a 21st Century Reasearch University. Our Engineering Dept. is growing and so is it's reputation. We also have a great ITT school. I am a Poly Sci Major.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have a Annual Freshman Walk with the Chancellor the first day of classes.

    Bang for the buck

As the question says I really feel I am getting the Bang for the Buck here at Merced. There are only 6000 students on Campus as of 2013. We are growing every year. Like I said we are a well kept secret.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of clubs on campus. Again Yosemite is our backyard. We are 1.5 hours from San Fran or Sacremento. We have a Lake as our backyard.

    Food and Dining

We have a new dinning hall. It has all types of food and meals available. We also have local vendors with food carts that take our meal plans. If you want to go to town the Bus works great and there are many different fast food places or restaurants available.

    Dorm Life

I am a 2nd year student and love living on campus. First year I was in a 2 person room in a dorm building. All Freshman live in one of these buildings. This year I'm in what they call bungalows. It's like a 2 bedroom apartment without a kitchen. Why would I live off Campus? The school always has activites for us, especially on the weekends. We are at the gateway to Yosemite.

    Academic Rigor

It's what you make of it. It is not a Party School. We are hear to get a quality education.

    Tips for prospective students

A well hidden secret. You get the same education that any UC CA school has but classs are small and Professors are at office hours. Put it on your list!

    In three sentences

This school is the best! Small campus, fantastic Professors and classes you can get into. The school cares about the students and provides a study type of enviorment.

Great for these types of students

I think it is wise for every student to get an upperclassman student mentor. I currently have a fellow undergraduate peer that I constantly ask advice when deciding classes, and I also have a graduate student mentor that I look to for advice when taking on leadership roles. He has helped me with my resume and speech writing to help me find my goals.

    Tips for prospective students

The most important thing when transitioning to Merced is to truly have an open mind. Your first year should include taking advantage of all opportunities possible that will increase your social skills and introduce you to many people, and most importantly help you exceed academically. Trust me, the easiest classes you will take will be during your freshman year so it is key that you use this opportunity to get the best GPA possible.

    Bang for the buck

The school brags about having lots of financial aid available, but that does not mean that you should not apply for outside scholarships. Money is very important in receiving an education.

    Am enjoying being here

Although Merced is in the middle of nowhere, you soon find many things to do. By being involved in clubs, I have found many peers in and out of my major that have continuously encouraged and helped me throughout my school work.

    Am learning a lot

I really improved my writing skills during my first year at UC Merced. With being involved in clubs, I have learned how to submit proposals to request money and how to relate myself to many groups of people.

Great for these types of students

This school is best for those who've decided to go into the science/engineering field because the school is primarily focused on science and technology. I would not recommend this school for those who are more into the arts/humanities because the school is new, and therefore a lot of majors are not available at the moment.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips for prospective students here are that while you will hear complaints such as It's really boring, or The food sucks, it is definitely what you make of it. Although, the food does need an upgrade, ha. Don't judge this school by it's cover, is my best advice, if you're unsure but no matter what university you've decided to attend, you will find it to be a new and exciting experience.

    Bang for the buck

I would say that this school is worth its price. I'm really thankful to be on the Blue and Gold Scholarship program, whereas I don't have to pay for my college expenses, including books. I know other people who have this scholarship. I've heard of a small amount of people that they did not receive any financial help at all, in terms of FAFSA or the school.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoyed living here. I lived on-campus and it's as they say, if you can live on-campus, definitely make the effort to. It was the craziest year I've ever had in my life. I'll never forget the memories and friends I've made. In regards to the campus, it's really lovely. There's lots of space and things to look at. Merced is a small area and most people find it boring, but I think that having fun is what you make of it, because I obviously had a great time.

    Am learning a lot

When it comes to education, there's no doubt that at UCM, you'll receive it. In my first year, I have found that I've learned an incredibly amount, varying on the classes I took.

    Tips for prospective students

make sure you consider your living arangements, it is a small UC with very little on campus housing.

    Bang for the buck

    Campus Safety

our community service officers (csos) are the best. they will walk you to your car and escort you around campus. we also have blue pillars to signal for an emergency, as well as text messaging and email systems to alert students and faculty and staff about emergencies.

    Greek Life

our greek system is very close-knit at the same time as we are not exclusive. we all hang out together (tri delta hangs out with dg and kkg and all of the men, etc). we also hang out with non-affiliated friends all the time. also we all have at least one philanthropic event each year, and each event is very fun, from tri delta's delta house of pancakes (dhop) to kkg's sock-hop to dg's anchor slam. the male fraternities throw edf, derby days and a walk in her shoes

    Food and Dining

definitely recommend choosing salads for at least one meal a day, if you want to avoid gaining weight. the food is good, but it is all very rich, and hard for most people to eat every single meal, every single day.

    Dorm Life

most students live off-campus, but as a freshman, i recommend living in the dorms. just so you know how good you have it when you move into an apartment or house. however, i have friends who've lived on campus all four years and loved it.

    Academic Rigor

the professors are teaching you how to learn more so than how 2+2 doesn't always equal four. grades shouldn't be your focus anyway, they don't count for much in the real world.

    Tips for prospective students

don't write it off just because there are cows. everyone loves uc davis and their cows. keep your heart open and see the opportunities.

    In three sentences

opportunities abound in this quiet little place that belle (beauty and the beast) would love. you can read play sports or do research with professors. it's perfect for a city girl or small-town guy.

    Campus Safety

We have a police station right on campus, although there isn't many on-campus during the night, you still see a couple police cars roaming around.

    Greek Life

I hear of them, but they do not have their own house yet.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs, but always room for more if you don't see something you like.

Great for these types of students

I'm glad I came to this college because it's not a major city, yet with the prestige of a UC title. The peaceful environment is it's best quality.

    Bang for the buck

I personally prefer living off-campus because I am closer to all the stores and do not have to deal with other dorm students. There is also a better sense of independence. The college charges some unnecessary fees, but overall, it's a usual UC tuition.

    What to do for fun

The campus activities group usually host many activities a month, and since I've attended, we've held an outdoor concert exclusively for UC students. We've received LMAFO and others I do not remember, then there are smaller events like fashions shows or events hosted by different clubs on campus.

    Food and Dining

The dining commons offer a variety of food served at the following stations: Asian, Mexican, Salad Bar, Grill, Pizza, Sandwich, Breakfast, and American/Italian. They also serve fountain drinks, juices, coffee and tea. You may also buy bottled drinks in the fridge. Up the hill near the classrooms, there is also a cafe-type station located in the first floor of the library as well as a student store near by for those who need a quick bite before they're next class.

    Dorm Life

It's much easier to get to class if you live on-campus, but it's a very big problem if you want to get to town. The hardest thing I went through while living in the dorms was having to deal with other dorm students. Dorms and the dining commons are located at the base of a hill, and the classrooms and library is located on a hill. Just a bit of exercise in the morning, it's not steep.

    Academic Rigor

Like all other colleges, it depends on the type of class you're taking and the teacher teaching the course. You can take a course with very hard material, but with the right teacher it becomes easier and more enjoyable. Other teachers may put you to sleep and cause you to fail the course, even if the subject is simple. Get a handle on the teachers style from day one and you'll know if you still want to take the course with that particular teacher.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to visit and get a feel of the campus for yourself. If you do decide to come to this college, I recommend living in the dorms the first year then move out. It's always nice to experience both worlds then decide if you like one or the other better. The UC is about a 10 minute drive from town, so you have to take the bus (unless you have a car) if you want to get to any stores- which may take 15-40min, depending where you're trying to go. The school is still relatively new compared to other UCs, so we're still expanding with not a lot of parking space.

    In three sentences

It's peaceful going to college in a more rural, suburban-type town. There's not too much to do, but if you're with the right people it doesn't really matter; you'll find something. Once you get to know the town and the people, it becomes more enjoyable.

    Clubs and Activities

Because the school is so new there is a greater opportunity to start any type of club on campus compared to larger schools which are more set in their ways.

Great for these types of students

The school for the most part is a science school, the school is great for students who plan on majoring in science. About 70% of the school major in biology and want to go on to medical school.

    What to do for fun

Merced is a small town so there isn't a lot to do compared to a big city, there are activities and functions on campus which keep students entertained.

    Food and Dining

The food is served buy chefs on campus and the students are allowed to what they want to eat from a menu. I like this because it's more personal and healthy then just having fast food everyday.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are themselves are fine, they're clean but they don't provide a lot of space for the amount of people which are supposed to be living in them.

    Academic Rigor

The school is a university so the classes are difficult and students are given one of the best education opportunities.

    Tips for prospective students

The best thing that you can do is manage your time, college is hard and there can be a lot of distractions but the way to succeed is to just manage your time. Also have fun it is college, it's supposed to be one of the best times of your lives.

    In three sentences

Small school and a small town, there isn't a lot to do out there but if you find people there that you like then you can easily have a good time. It's a lot easier to get classes since the school isn't over crowded. The teachers remember who you are, so that's nice.

    What to do for fun

Merced is a small town, roughly around 80,000 people. There is not a lot to do. There is occasionally buzz of big parties, but it eventually dies out. The nightlife is almost nonexistent. There is not a lot to do though. If you like spending your nights alone, watching Netflix movies with a couple of pals, look no further. UC Merced will suffice your needs of Netfilx binging.

    Food and Dining

If you're a vegetarian, there is not a lot of options. If you'll eat anything and you're not caring much about what you eat, then yeah, there's lots of options. As a Chicana, it's very difficult for me to get adjusted to the food. It's very good, and you can be healthy if you want to, but you get tired of eating the same stuff everyday.

    Dorm Life

Living off-campus is way cheaper. If you think you're missing out on the dorm life, well there's not much you're missing out on. It's great way to meet new people, but trying to live with people coming from different backgrounds can be difficult. I've met a few nice people and it's fun to be with people your age. But it gets difficult being an average kind of person, living with a party type, and an introvert type.

    Academic Rigor

Don't underestimate UC Merced just because it's one of the newest UC's. It is just as rigorous as any other UC out there like CAL or UCLA. Workload for any major requires an enormous amount of work just like in any university.

    Tips for prospective students

Study a lot. Seriously. It pays off. Don't underestimate a course, or anything. You'll feel really tired after all that coffee and all-nighters. Although it's funny when one hears about procrastination, it's not funny to jeopardize your education. So, study.

    In three sentences

An average school for average students. If you're looking for great UC education and are from the Central Valley? Look no further, this is the place for you.

Great for these types of students

U.C. Merced is great for students that want to get away from city life and escape the pressure of being in a place with a lot of people. If you like to learn and network with others and try new places Merced is a great place to come to but you have to be open to trying new places, meeting new people and a small community.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved with the campus life. There are tons of clubs on campus for just about anything you could imagine and its a great way to meet new people, build up your resume and have some fun. Talk to people in your classes that you would not normally talk to because networking is important. Go to office hours and talk to your professors they are normally really easy to talk to and love when you come by and show an interest in what they are doing. Go to the library a lot and study hard, but play hard too on the weekends. You have to balance things out.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is pretty expensive even though the U.C. system is suppose to be one of the cheapest line of schools in America but out of all of the U.C.'s i do believe it is the least expensive. The tuition does go up I believe every year but that is the case with all schools. For the most part though there are a lot of services that are offered that other colleges and U.C.'s do not have.

    Am enjoying being here

The first year was a lot to get used to but by the second year it is a lot better. You start to get a hang of things out in the valley and although it is not the same as being in L.A. or the Bay Area you still find things to do to keep you occupied and entertain you. Plus the people that you meet at the U.C. are extremely friendly.

    Am learning a lot

Going to U.C. Merced is like going any other University with the perk that the classrooms are a lot smaller so it almost makes it feel like your going to a private school, your just not paying as much as you would for one. The professors are really motivated to help you and are easy to talk to.

This school is great for a student who doesn't want to deal with going to a largely populated school that is a big campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a campus tour! One of the reasons why I fell in love with this school is because I visited the campus and enjoyed the fun and warm atmosphere.

    Bang for the buck

Going to this school at it's current price of admission is a good deal if you have received a good amount of financial aid and are willing to contribute some money to cover the rest of the costs.

Even though it is a small school, you will enjoy how easy it is to meet new people thanks to it's small setting. Also, the school has lots of activities and clubs to join so you'll never be bored.

    Will learn a lot

I think anyone who goes to this school will have the potential to learn a great deal. It all depends on whether or not you are willing to utilize all that is available to you at UC Merced.

The people here are great and very supportive and the town is small which is a definite plus if one enjoys the serenity and quiet life more than hustle and bustle. Students that wish to leave a legacy at UC Merced, this UC is the best one for you. Currently I am apart of the Collegiate Alumni Foundation, Student Board of Trustees as Development Chair, only one other UC San Diego offers the same program. I was also Community Service Administrator for the first Energy Service Corps established at UC Merced and helped weatherize buildings in Merced. I am also involved in undergraduate research with the Partnership Assessment of California. The above listed are examples of organizations and foundations students can become involed in at UC Merced.

    Tips for prospective students

Student Career Services provides excellent counseling for students looking for jobs and to futher assess their needs for job searching within their major. Utilzing the MyAudit on their portal account provides a good checklist for searching what classes are needed for the students major. Overall the school's academic atmosphere provides a great learning environment from the heart of California and will be the top UC in the near futre.

    Bang for the buck

UC Merced is the newest UC campus and students get to have their college experience with new facilities. Recently the school opened their new management building fall of 2011. Two of the buildings on campus have received Gold Leed award for energy efficiency, one of them being the new management building and other the early childhood daycare center. The Office of Student Life allows students to be apart of these clubs and organizations because it provides students with leadership skills, time management skills, and motivates the students to do well in classes.

    Am learning a lot

UC Merced provides instructor's at the top of their field and provides undergraduate research opportunities for students which makes UC Merced so unique. The student to teacher ratio averages from 20:1 which is great because we are still paying for a UC education with a private school learning environment. UC Merced also is one of world leading research facilities and have made groundbreaking research in cognitive science, biology and archaeology.

    Tips for prospective students

You are more focused because the ratio between students and teachers is small.

    In three sentences

It has an intimate environment allowing students to feel closer to staff members and fellow students. Athletics are not that great, but academics are pretty good. It is a good school for how long it has been around.

    Bang for the buck

the school may be a little pricey, but it's cheaper then most uc's. and i personally favor uc merced over any other uc because i love the smaller class sizes and the more intimate feeling you get. it just makes for a better learning atmosphere.

    What to do for fun

merced is a very small town, and there is not much to do. but i grew up in a small town and i'm used to it. you can go to the mall or the movies, or take a nice walk down to the lake which is about 10 minutes away from the school and have a barbecue and just relax.

    Food and Dining

since this school is such a small campus still, there is only one dining hall with about only 5 food places within it. the food isn't bad, it's good, but you can grow tired of the same choices every day.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is great. the ra's are students and are great at giving advice and helping their residents. quite hours are perfect, during the week they start at 11 and the weekend at 1.

    Academic Rigor

the school is always pushing their students to do their absolute best and always making sure resources are available to help better than understanding of any topic.

    Tips for prospective students

always do the reading for every single class and make sure you go to every discussion section. the bigger your lecture class is, the more your discussion class counts.

we have a well equipped police force to prevent any sort of mass crimes.

Great for these types of students

great for pioneers and students that like living in huge homes.

    Bang for the buck

with the recent real estate burst, you can live like a king in merced. one can rent a huge room or a master for anywhere between 300 to 400 dollars in an enormous two story home.

    What to do for fun

uc merced has a great party scene. due to the financial meltdown of the housing sector, many students live in huge two story homes with enormous living rooms and backyards (which serve as dance floors). many students plan their gigs with the consent of their neighbors and throw massive parties that go well onto 2 or 3 in the morning.

    Food and Dining

unfortunately the dining commons provide very little variety. the food is rather expensive and if one is not careful you can run out of money (ucm provides a prepaid lunch card for on campus students). it is bearable if you plan out your meals ahead of time.

    Dorm Life

the dorm life is great due to how close they are to the classes and dining. very convenient for those that do not have cars. the resident assistants do a great job in serving the needs of the on campus students.

    Academic Rigor

the humanities courses require an immense amount of reading that can be rarely avoided. engineering and natural sciences are the most time consuming on a daily basis because the work load is constant.

    Tips for prospective students

take advantage of small class sizes (relative to other established uc's). the professors are very accessible as are the academic advising staff. rarely is there a student who is completely lost and confused at uc merced because of these conditions.

    In three sentences

it is definitely a place where student's with pioneering spirits can thrive. with the school being very young one can set important and valuable precedent in regards to club life, greek life and research. this new uc has a lot of potential and brings out the best in their students.

you can go to some of the campus events or you can get the bus and go out to the movies or the mall. there really isnt much to do out here which makes it easier to stay focused in school but if you really want to got out and have fun the bus is not going to cut it, you will need a car.

    Food and Dining

the food could really use some improvement. there aren't a lot of choices to choose from and its kind of hard to stay healthy unless all you are eating is salads.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is okay if you really like who you are living with if not, then get ready for a really long school year. the amount space is actually pretty good especially compared to other campuses and is a lot newer than other campuses.

    Academic Rigor

being an applied mathematics major is definitely a challenge, once you get to upper division classes you will be putting a lot more time and effort into your classes.

    Tips for prospective students

    In three sentences

the campus is growing really fast, too many students are being admitted and there are not enough classrooms to accommodate for all of the students. the student to teacher ratio is still surprisingly small and they are willing to help you understand if you ask for their help.

    Food and Dining

the dining commons at uc merced are often crowded. some of the food is either bland or too seasoned. try everything once and then decide what you like and what you don't.

    Dorm Life

as a lot of people know, uc merced is the newest uc campus. with this being so, uc merced is continuously expanding. currently, living on campus means you have to drive through about 5 minutes of farmland in order to get into town. resident assistants in uc merced are very friendly and host many fun events for the students to go to. a lot of the uc merced clubs meet on campus, so joining a club will definitely keep you active while on campus. if you want a little more fun, lake yosemite is just a small walk away from the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

studying for classes and reading the textbooks will help you prepare for any test. do not skip classes because valuable material is reviewed. tests are challenging but tutoring and study groups will give you a big boost. some professors grade harder than others, it's a matter of luck on who you get.

    Tips for prospective students

    Greek Life

there are many frats and sororities here that are really beginning to pave a name at this newly born campus. being apart of frats and sors are a bit pricey though and is not something i recommend to those who are tight with their expenses.

    Clubs and Activities

there are so many clubs here, as well as activities that i can't even keep track. this section deserves at least four stars.

Great for these types of students

this campus is great for students who love to learn, read and listen, students with a taste for agriculture and landscape, students who are not at all close minded, and students who adore science and all it has to offer.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

we have occupiers camping out next to the quad a midst the trees and such which might look strange to those who are not used to it. but out here, it's the norm to be constantly reminded of the corruptions of wall street and other fat corporations/businesses and the government.

    Bang for the buck

if you're looking for a true bang, go to a city college/university. it's rather suburban out here. the bang is all in the books.

    What to do for fun

you have to look in the right places, which is one of the many life lessons here at uc merced. however, there are many fun things to do regardless. cattracks, the bus transportation provided, takes you most anywhere in the town of merced and the town bus, the bus, can take you to its neighboring cities i.e. atwater, los banos. the town life is conservative in its hours but are folky and welcoming.

    Food and Dining

you will never go hungry at uc merced. the food is of abundance and there are meal plans to survive quite comfortably on if you are living on campus. another reason to live in the dorms.

    Dorm Life

if you love socializing and meeting an enormous array of new people. if you don't have trouble making new friends. if you love summer camp, sharing rooms and are okay with sacrificing a slice of privacy then the dorms are perfect for you. although it's recommended that your first year be in the dorms so that you get the experience out of the way and pave your way through the social atmosphere.

    Academic Rigor

there are times you will want to rip your hair out because of the stress induced upon you through the lectures and discussions you'll attend and the massive amount of homework and studying you'll need to do. however, nothing feels better than when you complete the strenuous semester with passing grades and leverage of success beneath your belt.

    Tips for prospective students

true students with a passion for learning and spreading the word on various concepts and ideas i.e. social/political/local movements will thrive here. because this is a premature campus, take heed of its small, up and coming environment. voices are not widely heard like those of berkeley or davis etc. but they set a foundation and a stepping stone for future generations of ucm. wouldn't you want to be apart of that?

    In three sentences

the material is the same as any other uc including uc berkeley but we get more help since competition is not something big in our school student help each other to succeed. students don't need to make appointment with professors for office hours you can just show because the amount of student per class is small. the amount of help you get here is so much that if your not passing your either not college material or your being lazy and its your fault your failing.

    Campus Safety

The only issue with safety that is felt around campus is around raccoons. They roam around sometimes, usually at night, but they don't harm anyone unless they feel threatened. Besides that, the campus is quiet and mellow, even at night.

    Greek Life

There are few options here for fraternities and sororities. There are more professional fraternities than social ones, but they are great for people who are serious about a certain field like pre-med, business, and health care.

    Clubs and Activities

Once you find a club that you're really interested in, it can alter your experience here at UC Merced. There are clubs for archery, hawaiian dancing, zumba, japanese, korean, and many more. When it comes to club-held school-wide events, though, there isn't much support from the student body unless the clubs do some massive advertising.

Great for these types of students

This school would most benefit students who are looking to do research. Because the school is brand new and has the money for research, younger students are able to start early on doing experiments and researching. Otherwise, this school would be great for anyone looking for a less-populated, quieter place to learn.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a lot of empty landscape and dry grass. The weather is extreme: usually it's really cold or really hot. It's rare to have an in-between. Because the campus is still growing, the buildings follow one main road and come to an abrupt end. At least getting to class isn't too dreadful!

    Bang for the buck

This school offers plenty of financial aid for students who need it. For the amount of education you can get at a college, this school is worth the tuition.

    What to do for fun

Students can take a bus or drive out to the downtown area of Merced. There is a small mall, movie theaters, and a few restaurants. On campus, students can go to the gym, hang out in the lounges or the library, or join a club for fun. There is a lot of open space to do whatever anyone would want to do for fun.

    Food and Dining

The dining commons here is fairly standard. Last year, lunch and dinner were two different menus, but this year, the food doesn't change at 1pm vs. 7pm. There is a variety, but because there's currently only one dining commons and a cafe up the hill, eating certain foods becomes a routine. The food is well worth the price, though.

    Dorm Life

Underclassmen, live on campus if you can! Commuting (without a car, especially) is a hassle. Students who live off campus tend to feel detached from the campus life. Most of the friendships are created in the dorm halls when people are bored and want to find something to do. Other times, students meet each other at events held conveniently on campus. The bus systems run every hour or so and do follow loopy, indirect routes.

    Academic Rigor

The class difficulties depend on which classes students take. As a freshman, some of the classes may come as a review, but as the subjects are more refined, the material becomes a heavier load.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely visit the campus before making any final decisions to attend this school. Some students really enjoy being here, but for others, not so much. Regardless, students will learn in a safe environment.

    In three sentences

The University of California Merced is new, to best describe it. Here, students can explore leadership and watch the school grow with them. There isn't much city life, but the school itself is like a warehouse for learning.

Additionally, the dining professionals maintain an environment that is clean, friendly, courteous, and respectful of all guests and their dining needs.

    Dorm Life

I enjoyed my dorm life experience at UC Merced far more than I had anticipated! Living in the dorms gave me the opportunity to be more involved with my classmates and all the events on campus than I probably would have been if I lived off-campus. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to interact with many people, of all ages and of many backgrounds, preparing me for my encounters in my future profession. The dorms have given me the best friendships of my college career!

    Academic Rigor

My academic experience at UC Merced has thoroughly prepared me for my endeavors past graduation. Many of my professors exposed me to the intense efforts needed at the graduate school level. I have taken many courses that have prepared me to think critically and efficiently manage a fast pace workload. Additionally, I discovered that a close relationship with my professors was integral in throughout my learning experiences. All of my professors were truly very inspiring and encouraging!!

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to pick a major that will best help you achieve your goals and make you happy. Additionally, it's essential to build positive relationships with professors and teaching assistants because they will be able to assist in future endeavors.

    In three sentences

Attending the University of California, Merced has given me an opportunity to grow and excel has a researcher. My experience at this University has instilled in me the passion for innovation and desire to produce a better reality for the humankind. I have learned that I am capable of overcoming obstacles. I am a first generation college student. Despite this disadvantage I reached out to develop skills that would help me overcome my hardships and bring me closer to the day when I achieve my goals. Overall, I have had a phenomenal experience at UC Merced!!

    Greek Life

Theres quite a few fraternities and sororities, but their not very big compared to other schools.

    Clubs and Activities

    very many clubs and activities.

Great for these types of students

students who like to recycle, do not like to party as much or go shopping, and students who love the outdoors.

    What to do for fun

there is a lot of outdoor activities such as camping, going to the lake, going to yoesmite etc.

    Food and Dining

i do not eat at school very often, but the few times i have i have not been put down.

    Dorm Life

i do not live in the dorms but they look nice.

    Academic Rigor

    Great academic rigor.

    Tips for prospective students

It is a small school and is surrounded by farmland. If you are okay with a small city life, then this is the right place for you. The school is big on recycling so this is a great place for recylers.

    In three sentences

UCM is a very clean campus. Everything is new and there is so much diversity. The small classrooms give great opportunities to get to know the professors.

    Campus Safety

Campus police are always around making sure we are safe. Poles are located all throughout the campus where you can press a button and get help or escorted somewhere if you do not feel safe walking alone. The school will send notifications to your phone or email to inform you of emergency.

    Clubs and Activities

Many clubs and activities are available. If their is not a club that interests you, you can start your own.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The cafe called The lantern located in the library is were a lot of students go when they need a pick me up and a place to study. In the dorms they are study rooms that studying and hanging out are taken place.

    What to do for fun

For fun you can go to the near by mall. Downtown Merced has shops and a movie theater that most people go to. Gym, golf center, and bowling are other fun things the students do for fun.

    Food and Dining

The food is not like home cooked meals. The dinning commons does have a variety of foods throughout the day to meet your needs. Overall the food is average.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is fun and a good experience. You make lots of friends who end up in some of your classes making it easier to have a study partner. Self in-dependency comes from living away from home.

    Academic Rigor

Some lessons might be difficult to understand but Professors and teacher assistants always are available to help in person or online. All school materials necessary are useful in helping people learn. Tutoring is there for all subjects.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not be afraid to ask for help. take advantage of all available resources, that is why they are there. Make sure you surround yourself with motivating friends.

    In three sentences

UCM is wonderful, I would rate it an 8. The campus is beautiful. Staff and faculty are helpful and always eager to help you out.

    Campus Safety

Very safe school, nothing happens here.

    Greek Life

    Small and pointless.

    Clubs and Activities

They do try to have clubs and what not, probably in order to keep the students from going insane from boredom in that crappy town.

Great for these types of students

Good for the socially awkward students and ones that got terrible grades in high school. You will only be respected here if you are going to be in engineering.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The campus is surrounded by fields of dead grass and cows.

    Bang for the buck

You do not get your moneys worth at this University.

    What to do for fun

NOTHING YOU WILL BE IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE!

    Food and Dining

It doesn't even deserve a star, all i can say is, it always made me and my friends sick after eating there. We tried to avoid the Dining Hall at all costs.

    Dorm Life

The dorm rooms are small and crowded. And they force you to eat the disgusting Dining Commons food (which is low quality and unsanitary). That is the only place on campus that you can get food too!

    Academic Rigor

This college gives the UC system a bad name. It has terrible professors and the course work (mainly in the SSHA department) is a joke. If you slacked off in high school and want a UC education you can definitely make it in this campus, but probably won't know anything when you leave. Which is scary since some of the students will attempt to be doctors. I'll make sure never to go to a hospital with a doctor who graduated from UC Merced - just saying.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved with any club on campus and you will not be so bored.

    In three sentences

Nice because everything was new. But lack of difficulty in course work and limited available courses/majors. Also the limited amount of jobs available on campus and in the community is a real disadvantage for the students struggling to afford the high educational costs for the not so high leveled education we are paying for.

    Campus Safety

I find UCM to be an extremely safe campus, even if it is a public university. There's always a way of finding help for any given situation, and campus police (not just security, POLICE) are always patrolling to ensure every student is safe.

    Greek Life

There's plenty of Greek clubs and organizations, so there's something for anyone who wants to be involved.

    Clubs and Activities

There's plenty of anything and everything to do, and if you're someone with many interests, like me, then you're probably going to want to get involved. You can join the psychology club and have weekly discussions or lecturers, and still have time to go to your Bobcat Band rehearsals and perform. Then you can take a break from school-related activities and hit up the gym for an hour, then meet with friends for a book club discussion or go back to your dorm or the library and study.

Great for these types of students

UCM is great for studious students who want to escape from big-city distractions, and focus on studies while still having time for activities that make them feel right at home, whether it be music, sports, or student government, or even abstract clubs or organizations.

    What to do for fun

In the city of Merced you can go to the various shopping centers, or catch a movie at a theater, watch live performances at the Playhouse, go with friends to the gym, drive up (or walk to, if you live on campus) to Yosemite Lake and have a barbecue or go boating with other UCM students.

    Food and Dining

The university is right on the outskirts of Merced, a 5 minute drive could take you to many popular restaurants. Ask students for recommendations and they are sure to hook you up with the best dining and deals in town. As for on-campus dining, well lets just say I pray I don't gain that Freshman FIFTY. Just kidding, but the food is awesome. :)

    Dorm Life

Different room styles and rooming options, the commodities, and the luxuries make dorm life the life to live.

    Academic Rigor

Because class sizes are so small, students have the opportunity to go beyond the curriculum and get hands-on research in fields of study that they're interested in, and those experiences build into the curriculum in such ways that allow you to utilize knowledge from different fields without necessarily having to major in those fields, and you make connections across broad subjects that teach you more of the interconnectedness of life and knowledge.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep your grades up, and avoid Procrastinating AT ALL COSTS. The decisions you make every day can affect your future in the long run, and as for UCM, visit the campus and take a look to see if it's somewhere you'd really enjoy studying. I visited many other universities, but I fell in love with UC Merced.

    In three sentences

UC Merced is small but efficient, and ideal for students who enjoy living and working in close-knit communities. It's very different from big-city schools, and a small student body allows for students to have direct one-on-one focus and contact with their teachers. At UCM you're never just a number. Teachers listen and help is always available whenever you need it. You can talk to an advisor whenever you find it necessary, and the only question that goes unanswered is the one that isn't asked. :)

    Campus Safety

We have officers around the school and I always feel safe. If something happens on campus there is always a quick response to the event. They police also makes sure to do a in depth investigation to make sure nothing like the situation would happen again. Students also have the ability to be apart of the safety on campus. There are a few courses you have to take and then they can apply to work nights and to walk around the dorm buildings making sure nothing illegal is going on.

    Clubs and Activities

You have the ability to start clubs on the Campus. Since the university is only 7 years old. Many clubs have been started for the past few years and I am sure that there are many that have yet been thought of. We have a great variety of clubs, but if students realize that there is a club that should be started on the campus they just register the club and from then on out its official. That is a good perspective in expanding our university I think. It allows students to take charge and to find ways to keep themselves busy and have an active life. Starting clubs is also fairly simple on the campus. It is pretty much in high school. You need to have officers, fill out a registration form, and to have a faculty member backing your club. Make sure to join clubs because they have many great opportunities for each student.

    Food and Dining

The food gets boring after a while so it is good that they have a salad and sandwich station. Always be willing to try something new and try not to go off campus to waste money. You can do that on the weekends but make sure to find places that are not that expensive, we are poor college students.

    Dorm Life

The community is great. I was able to get to know almost everyone on the floor. It gets a little hard when people do not abide by the contract that was signed but you just have to ignore it. If you cannot, the Resident Assistants are always happy to help and to fix the problem. The Resident Assistants also make different events to get the residents that live on campus to have some fun other than study. They also do some activities during finals to take the stress away from all of the hard work that we do and so that we can have a break once in a while. Dorm life is fun.

    Academic Rigor

The academics are hard, but the ability to get to know the professors is really awesome. It is harder to get to know them that well in other colleges with bigger classroom sizes. You also have to push yourself and work hard.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the school before accepting and deciding to go there. Make sure it is a place you want to be or you will regret it. I love it here, but I know many individuals that end up going back to their homes and enrolling into a community college.

    In three sentences

In the middle of no where. Friendly and great people. Beautiful sunsets and sunrises.

    Campus Safety

The best, the police and security are fair and just and keep the students safe during events especially during graduations.

    Greek Life

Is growing, and there are social, professional and multicultural. Something for everyone interested.

    Clubs and Activities

For anyone and everyone, very diverse campus which means there is a club for everyone. Also the Campus activities board tries to get concerts at the school and we have had several big bands at the school including LMFAO, Far East Movement and Travis Porter

Great for these types of students

Students who are self initiated and are willing to start new things

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The school is surrounded by cows and vast hills of grass and nothingness, a very interesting studying environment.

    Bang for the buck

You do get to use a lot of research resources and are in class with professors with PHDs and ones who went to prestigious schools so definitely get your bang for your buck

    What to do for fun

There are many clubs and greek life on campus, and the downtown area of merced are fun. Modesto and Fresno are always close by as well

    Food and Dining

Expensive, and the quality is not all that great. I would say you should learn to cook if you come here.

    Dorm Life

Is excellent and i reccomend highly that incoming freshman or transfer students live on campus at least one year. It is the best time for networking and getting to know the people who you will be in class with for the next 4 years.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major, you will have a lot of reading, a lot of assignments geared towards your major and a lot of group work.

    Tips for prospective students

Find something here that you enjoy and stick to it on top of your schoolwork. Try to get a research position and or an internship in the interest of your field.

    In three sentences

UC merced is a very new campus and is what each individual student makes of it. If you find things to do, you will have a good time, if you choose not to be involved you will not like it there.

    What to do for fun

Hang out with friends and just pass the time in whatever ways you can.

    Food and Dining

At first, the food was good. After several months of the same food, it grew tiring and even repulsive at times. However, there are always alternatives, such as salads every day.

    Dorm Life

At first, the dorm life was dull. However, after the first few months I really settled in and made the most out of my dorm experience. Also, you can rearrange the rooms to fit your liking, I highly suggest it.

    Academic Rigor

For only being 7 years old, UCM seems to believe that it is Yale, according to how rigorous many classes can be. I believe this is due to UCM trying to build its reputation.

    Tips for prospective students

A few tips I would offer to prospective students would be to get out of the dorms and meet people.

    In three sentences

UC Merced is not everybody's school. Being that it is located far away from any big cities, UCM is a very down to Earth kind of school. However, I have grown to love and enjoy my education here, I highly recommend UCM!

    Clubs and Activities

Our club life on campus is extremely active. There's practically something happening every weekend. INTERVARSITY CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP.

Great for these types of students

If you like small school vibes this campus is for you. Its big enough to not see everyone, yet big enough to recognize faces. Everyone helps everyone else out.

    What to do for fun

I suggest: volunteering, go to yosemite, club activities, run, volleyball, soccer, eat different places, hang out with the friends you make (movies), pintrest nights, and go to Intervarsity Christian Fellowship.

    Food and Dining

I am not picky when it comes to food. I am grateful. I was pescetarian one month on our campus and the selections for vegetarians are few yet still there... the salad bar and make-it-yourself sandwich station helps liven up food selections.

    Dorm Life

Toulumne Hall is the perfect place to dorm if you like connivence (its close to the Dinning Commons, Recreation Center, Library, and Classes). If you like space Valley Terraces are the place for you (you have a living room, personal bathroom to share). If you like a quiet more responsible Hall register/apply for the Academic Hall. My experiences in these places were pleasant. Everything is practically new.

    Academic Rigor

As with all courses, majors, professors, or students academic rigor is dependent on the student. Personally, I have been challenged in all of the courses I have taken and have grown intellectually. The quality of one's education and academic rigor will be what an individual makes it to be.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend taking advantage: of the research opportunities with world-famous professors, and all the services you pay for like tutoring, rec center. And go to Intervarsity Christian Fellowship (club meetings).

    In three sentences

UC Merced is one of the Greenest (eco-friendly), diverse, and open campus. An academic community that strives to improve the city around them. I am a Christian and I have yet to feel as if any student on campus looks down on me because of my beliefs (they try not to at least).

    Campus Safety

Nothing really happens on campus because it is so small.

    Greek Life

There are a decent amount of sororities, fraternities, and professional/service fraternities. It is a smaller campus, so there aren't too many to choose from.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs to choose from, and many that need to be started. Check on the Office of Student Life page for more info.

Great for these types of students

Those who like small schools and want to start many organizations on a campus.

    Bang for the buck

Small public school that you can make a huge impact in, totally worth it.

    What to do for fun

Get involved on campus, and you will not complain about having nothing to do in Merced. I am so busy that I rarely think about that.

    Food and Dining

Food is okay, could be better.

    Dorm Life

This will be my third year living on-campus. If you make it work, it can be a great experience.

    Academic Rigor

You cannot slack off and expect an A. Those who put in the hard work will receive the grades they deserve. Office hours can be very useful depending on the professor.

    Tips for prospective students

LIVE ON HOUSING! As much as dorm life can be expensive, you will build relationships that will last you a lifetime. It's a great way to transition from high school, and the Resident Assistants are there to help you.

    In three sentences

It is an amazing school if you want a private school experience for a public school price. They give decent financial aid and there are many opportunities to get involved on campus and start something new.

    Campus Safety

There are blue post everywhere, UCCops, and police officers on campus. I fell a lot safer at UCM then at home. We get alerts on our cell phones and emails right away. Safety is not an issue at UCM.

    Clubs and Activities

We have over 100 clubs to choose from. There are social and academic clubs. There's a club for everyone. Most of the events that are held at school would be free to UCM students if they have their student ID. And there are a lot of culture nights since UCM is so diverse.

    Bang for the buck

UCM gives out a lot of financial aid. It's a pain in the butt if you have to do the verification process, but their staff members makes it easy for you. You can get a hold of them real fast and their more than willing to help. I believe that what I'm paying to attend UCM is worth it. It's a new school so we get new everything, and plus we get a concert just for UCM students only. In 2011, LMFAO performed for us and in 2012 we had Travis Porter.

    What to do for fun

Most of the time my friends and I get creative. There really isn't much to do in Merced and there are days when UCM does not hold an event. We would either have a movie marathon or go the lake and just play around or play glow-in-the-dark ultimate frisbee. We would even play family board games or lay down on the grass and just talk.

    Food and Dining

Okay, to be honest, the food is actually pretty good but you get sick of it after a month. There isn't much a variety. The Asian and Mexican food they serve is not so good. To Asians and Mexicans they can tell the difference, but if you're everyone else then you would be fine with the Asian and Mexican food.

    Dorm Life

I really enjoyed the dorm life. I got sick of the food but I still enjoyed living on campus. There are fun events that goes on and it's real easy to get to places on campus since it's so small. Everyone here is real friendly. It's so easy to make friends. I would encourage for everyone to live on campus at least once.

    Academic Rigor

If you're in the Social Science and Human Arts school then you really have noting to worry about. But if you're in the Natural Science school or the Engineering school then be prepared to receive your first F, D, or C. Those schools are no joke. You need to be constantly studying. Form study groups. They help a lot.

    Tips for prospective students

For those taking engineering/science classes, my advice to you is to just stay on top of everything. It's so easy to far behind if you miss a lecture or didn't read ahead of time. Every point counts. Also, for those of you living on campus, you will get sick of the food really fast so when you go home pack as much home cook meals has you can and bring them.

We only have on dining common but it features six different stations with six different types of food. The pizza fresh out of the oven is an exceptional choice.

    Dorm Life

Living in dorms is great. The campus is a short walk away and you meet a lot of new people. They also have lots of activities that residents can participate in just don't make a lot of noise after eleven, its quiet hours!

    Academic Rigor

The classes offered on campus are very diverse. Some might be very easy to manage and others can be very difficult. If they are difficult it just takes a little more studying and more communication with your professor and the class wont seem as hard anymore.

    In three sentences

The University of California in Merced is a great college to attend. The campus is very nice, small and very friendly. It is a good school and always feels like a little slice of bliss.

    Greek Life

There is social fraternities and sororities and then there are professional fraternities. Both are very fun groups of people. I intend to join both this coming semester.

    Clubs and Activities

I personally haven't joined a club yet, I intend to this coming fall. But what I do know is that they have really fun informative activities you can go to throughout the year.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who like to focus on their school work and have fun with new and exciting people.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The lake. There is a lake a few yards away from the school. Many of the students go there to hang out on the weekends.

    Bang for the buck

There are actually really awesome deals within Merced because of the college. Many of the stores will give discounts if you show them your student ID card.

    What to do for fun

There is not much in Merced to do, but if you have the right friends to enjoy it with, you can find plenty to do.

    Food and Dining

I only ate on campus a couple of times and from my point of view, it was decent. There are a select few things that I enjoyed. But from my friends point of view on campus, they eventually grew tired of having the same type food over again. Completely understandable and likely to happen I believe.

    Dorm Life

I was not granted the opportunity to stay in dorms my first year. But from the point of view of my friends. Dorm life is nice, you make a lot of friends and you have plenty of fun.

    Academic Rigor

I personally enjoyed my professors, they are professional and they are understanding. When you need help, sometimes the teacher may just be too busy but they have their TAs. The TAs are definitely the next best thing to helping you understand the material.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to go to a school that is strictly parties and such, UC Merced is not the place you come. If you want to go to a school that you focus on your studies and also have a good time, this is the school to go too. Its quiet and enjoyable, you and the many friends you make can have plenty of fun.

    In three sentences

Merced is definitely a school to concentrate on your studies. Have fun and pass your classes as long as you have a strong way of focusing.

    Food and Dining

There are two main places to eat here-- at the DC or Lantern. The DC is where most of the students get their food ranging from pizza, burgers, and salads to a cultural foods each day. The Lantern provides a quick on-the-go cafe theme. Anyone can grab a steaming hot cup of coffee or latte, or a delicious sandwich for a lecture or lunch with some friends.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life can be filled with wonderful experiences. I've seen friends become best friends and strangers become great friends. RAs (people in charge or dorm floors) are reachable and provide advice for students at their dorm floors. There are many social events that get students involved so there would not be a lonely night for anyone.

    Academic Rigor

As UC Merced is a brand new school in development, the classes are difficult (depending on the professors). It is not easy in college, even if the school is new. There are professors, TAs, and other teachers that will make the best of college and teach you what you need to know to pass the class with an A.

    Tips for prospective students

UC Merced is an overall quiet school with a small population thus making it easy to study. People are extremely friendly and will try to help you if you seek help. Professors have a small amount of students, so it is easy for you to get to know professors.

    In three sentences

I had a hard decision deciding between staying close to home or going to UC Merced because I have heard rumors and stories about people saying that UC Merced is a tad bit boring-- and that's putting it gently. But I decided to attend UC Merced, which turned out to be a wonderful experience because I improved my education, joined many organizations, and made plenty of new friends. In fact, UC Merced is a gift wrapped in white box with colorful presents inside.

    What to do for fun

For fun, there is exploring Lake Yosemite and the town in Merced, there is also a quite small mall to check out too.

    Food and Dining

The food is mediocre here, it does need a little improvement as to having new food every week instead of repetitive food courses.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life has its very fun perks, you get to meet new people from different areas of the world giving a lot of diversity. You will also find new friends very easily with the activities the Resident Assistants provide for bonding.

The lower general education classes may be of some challenge and some may be of a breeze but the instructors teaching it are very strict and specific on work ethics.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not underestimate the school for its new found state, it is as hard as any other top UC campuses. Study hard and read always before and after lecture. Keep focused and stay on your schedule.

    In three sentences

UC Merced is the newest 21st century research college and has many great technological resources for student and staff benefits. The faculty to student ratio is very low which allows for hands on learning with the instructor. It is a very welcoming campus that also inspires belonging and exploration.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of clubs on campus that create very interesting events. From Chinese cultural dances, food, and games to Mexican traditional entertainment. Within clubs one goes on extravagant retreats for a very low cost.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who like the outdoors. Also great for studying because Merced is a very quiet town.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

A tradition for UC Merced is entering through the Vagina when you start as a freshmen and exit it once you graduated. It symbolizes a new birth.

    What to do for fun

To start of, Merced is in the middle of nothing so things to do it automatically limited.

    Food and Dining

Food is alright on campus, but cooking your own food is always better and cheaper.

    Dorm Life

Dorming is a must for freshmen year. It is a great expierence, and fun way to meet people when your new.

    Campus Safety

There are, naturally, campus police on campus all the time, as well as staff on-call 24/7. Around the campus are also emergency call towers, so you'll never feel like there isn't someone around to help you. The campus also has a nice emergency notifications system that sends messages to all students through PA and through cellular phones letting them know the situations on campus.

    Bang for the buck

UC Merced is a costly school, but the lack of classes at the moment might shy some people away from attending. However, the school has a higher acceptance rate than many other schools in the state of California, and the courses that ARE offered are not of low quality. I'd say UC Merced is about average when it comes to bang for the buck.

    What to do for fun

UC Merced doesn't have much to do on campus due to being a new school, but it does have a Den for playing games like Ping Pong and Pool, as well as computer labs near housing and in the academic buildings. Off campus you can go shopping, play sports at the Merced College, or go to the movies.

    Food and Dining

The food is tasty in the beginning, but the choices are limited and as a result, you will likely get tired of it rather quickly. I recommend learning how to cook or going off campus if you want more variety.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are nice, though a bit crowded, and lack individual kitchens. Unless you live in a single suite, you'll have to share a bedroom with one or two other people. The rooms are fully furnished, however, and come with internet (wired and wireless) and cable TV.

    Academic Rigor

The courses are not too strict on the learning outcomes and are rather flexible in teaching students in methods that can be found enjoyable and enlightening. Of course, be prepared for challenging coursework from time to time.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are interested in computer science or graphics design, I would recommend a different school, as the programs at UC Merced are too limited at this point in time. Also, try to live on campus your first year to better adjust to the school and meet peers.

    In three sentences

UC Merced is a quaint, new school that is slowly growing in popularity. The class sizes are small enough for one-to-one relationships with professors, and the courses are of good quality. The only downside is that, due to being a new school, there aren't many classes offered.

    Food and Dining

    Food and Dining

The food is actually pretty good. The downsides is the price and that it can get boring when they dont switch up the food. My advice is go to the blue plate section, its the most expensive but its the most delicous and they change it. Also, on weekends its only open for brunch and dinner so if you get hungry any time when its closed go to the marketplace which is like a liqour and stock up on snacks.

    Dorm Life

I live in the suites with 2 other people and its actually really fun. I was fortunate enough to know one of my roomates before so I did not have to live with complete strangers. Yet, meeting them and living with them makes you close really fast. The dorms get really loud sometimes and if your like me that sleeps early, it can be hard to sleep that early but there are RA's you can go to if it gets too loud. If you from the beggining treat people with respect and expect the same from them you wont have any problems.

There is also a lake within walking distance that you can swim or boat in. There are also a lot of events on campus year round.

    Food and Dining

The campus only has one dining hall with strange hours. Closes at 10 am to 11 am, closes again from 3-4, and finally at 9 pm. Not very convinent for students who get out after 9. Market Place is like a little grocery store and is open til 11 which is nice. Food in the dining commons is not very good and not a lot of selection/variety.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are still very new and not beat up yet. UC Merced has the best dorms I've seen. Doubles and quads are very spacious. Triples seem small for three people. I have not seen many singles but they seem to be a decent size for one person.

    Academic Rigor

Any UC campus will be challenging. UC Merced is no exception. Course loads are very challenging but rewarding.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know the campus and surrounding areas before you commit. Get used to hot weather! Research intern opportunities and research opportunities Be open to changing majors Join lots of clubs and organizations! Apply for financial aid early!

    In three sentences

Overall I give UC Merced an 8 out of 10. I love how small the classes are and the one on one you get with your professors. I do not like how isolated the campus is from surrounding cities. I also love how new everything is and the research opportunities.

    Campus Safety

There's police officers stationed on campus all the time, and we have emergency posts all throughout campus that you can sound if absolutely necessary, or if you would like an escort from one end of the campus to the other in the middle of the night.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to do research in their profession, and definitely students who like small campuses in lazy cities.

    What to do for fun

There's parties going on every weekend in some of the off-campus houses, which are easy to get in on if you know a lot of people. If you're not into that stuff, there's a movie theater nearby and Lake Yosemite about a ten-minute walk away. You can also plan trips to Yosemite itself for super cheap as a student (like $20 round trip), and bus fare to and from the city is completely free.

    Food and Dining

Campus food is campus food, but there are some nice varieties throughout the weeks. The meal plan, instead of giving you a certain number of meals per week, gives you around 1300 dollars per term to work with. That's about 11 dollars a day, which sounds difficult at first, but you can always add more money in, so that's good. My main gripe about the food here is that many of our food options close on the weekends, leaving us with very little choice about what to eat. Overall though, I've been happy with the food here, and it's good enough for me.

    Dorm Life

My roommates and suitemates became best friends almost instantly, and I regularly talk to and hang out with many other people in my hall. As long as you're willing to be social and take that first step to get to know the people who live near you, the dorm life will be amazing.

    Academic Rigor

This is just my first term here, so I don't know about the upper-division classes, but so far, the workload isn't overwhelming. Definitely challenging, being a UC School, but it is definitely manageable IF you devote the time to it.

    Tips for prospective students

As with many other colleges you apply to, GPA is not the end-all, be-all reason that this college will enroll you here. Community service can take you a long way, and having leadership qualities never hurts either. However, if you're looking for a big campus with a large student body in the middle of a large city, this may not be the choice for you. If you prefer a sleepy town with a small, friendly community of students, then by all means, apply here! Almost everyone here gets financial aid in some way, shape or form, so fill out those FAFSAs!

    In three sentences

UC Merced is a great place for anyone who enjoys close-knit communities and who plan to go into research professions in their future. It is a very environmentally-friendly campus, and since it opened only 7 short years ago, the campus is very technologically advanced. Being a new university also means that there are many opportunities for leadership on campus, and many students who want to take charge can always form more clubs to fit the needs of every student on campus.

Every night the police patrol the campus. There are escorts available as well if students need to get across campus. Emergency telephones are available around campus if an emergency occurs.

Great for these types of students

Great school for students that appreciate nature and a quiet environment. The weather is great every season which is something that a nature oriented student might enjoy as well.

    What to do for fun

The city is the place where most go out in the weekend. Yosemite Lake is not that far from campus either, therefore some students go and have picnics with friends.

    Food and Dining

Because Merced is not a big campus, there is only one dinning center. There is not enough variety but there is a Market where they sell things that studnets might need including other food.

    Dorm Life

The RA's always plan fun social events for the residents which help build connections between all of us. Everyone is welcoming but at the same time people can get loud. Which is why the hall's have Quiet Hours where there is not any noise and residents can have peace time.

    Academic Rigor

Professors are willing to help and provide sufficient office hours for students. There is also an amazing program where they provide free tutoring for students if there is any struggle in academics.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to make new friends and have the time of your life. Also, be aware that self management and balancing a social and academic life can be difficult but you can do it!

    In three sentences

UC Merced is a growing, friendly campus surrounded by nature and a small caring community. Merced promotes leadership through it's clubs and organizations. Overall, Merced is full of eager students ready to make a difference.

Is respected life everything else that is on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a variety of clubs and activities. UC Merced is a new campus and since it is still growing, so are its clubs and activities.

Great for these types of students

Every student is treated fairly and respectfully. No one is ever excluded form class discussion so everyone's voice gets heard. The main reason behind this is the small class sizes, they are a maximum of 20 students and everyone gets a chance to get their voices heard.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The campus is a rural location, but this does not stop it from accomplishing things. UC Merced is still growing and each moment it only gets better.

    Bang for the buck

Unlike other schools, UC Merced is worth it because even when it comes to buying food, everything is affordable.

    What to do for fun

A lot things can be done for fun. Their is a local day care where students are able to help out and do community service hours. There is also a lake behind the campus and this not only serves as a fun get away, but also a source to become stree free.

    Food and Dining

The food is really good. Each week their is a variety of foods to choice from and the dining center is clean and efficient.

    Dorm Life

Dorm are great. The dorms are close to classes so walking is no big deal. The dorms itself are big and clean. Their is personal space for everyone.

    Academic Rigor

To push oneself beyond what is easy. In the long run the constant studying and all-nighters will allow a person to follow their dreams.

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

Campus safety by far is one of UC Merced's staple as an new and developing university. Every night I find campus security patrolling school grounds and holding vigil by the entrance, by the parking lots and near the foot of Tenaya and Cathedral dorm buildings.

    Greek Life

Greek life here, alike everything else socially relevant, is still developing. There are currently 7 university-wide recognized chapters, and the number is only but growing. Campus activity, mixers, greek events etc., are very much available at this school.

    Clubs and Activities

Clubs are very grass-root at this stage and currently expanding and finding footing, but this is just one other reason to become a leader and start your very own club at this growing university.

Great for these types of students

The seclusion is perfect for students looking to settle down and avoid reckless partying and other forms of intemperance.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

This campus is very new and any 'unusual traditions' are far from being established at this school. Go out and make start your own!

    Bang for the buck

If this is referring to the most you can get for your money, UC Merced provides one of the most comprehensive financial aid packages for their students.

    What to do for fun

There is Yosemite as one of the most popular destinations among students. San Francisco is also a an hour and half away so many visit the city when students need some time to get their mind of their studies. The Downtown area of Merced is actually very nice, a very authentic urban feel with a great theater.

    Food and Dining

The dinning commons is rather small and completely government funded meaning no private business is currently allowed to sell their own food in our cafeteria's. Food option in general can be far better.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a bit restricted, I personally had a three-person room sharing a bathroom among six different guys. There are always new freshman buildings being constructed however, the architecture is very modern and smart, and I feel this aspect of the university to change drastically in the next several years.

    Academic Rigor

The course sophistication is certainly alike those found at other UC's despite UC Merced's status a a tier three university. Most of their teaching staff are professors originally from Berkeley in particular, but also various other UC's.

    Tips for prospective students

Always get to learn your discussion, lab or lecturer on a first-name basis. Set a normal schedule to attend office hours weekly in classes that demand extra time; and perhaps most importantly, no matter how stressed or heavy your course-load gets, make sure to maintain your health!

    In three sentences

The academia of UC Merced is filled with brilliant professors, lectures and students, one aspect that I come to learn every week. The campus is rather small and excluded from any thing one would call 'urban' and 'hip'. This school also is the foremost university taking advantage of its relatively new modern infrastructure to make it one of the most green and energy efficient colleges in America.

The town at night can be pretty interesting. Get some friends together and go explore. It is a quite town, but it is what you make of it.

    Food and Dining

The food is well made and healthy enough, but you can get tired of eating the same things every week. Go into town every once in a while.

    Dorm Life

It all depends on the people. Get along with everyone, get to know the people around you. Don't shut yourself in, or you'll find yourself getting annoyed a lot easier.

    Academic Rigor

You are graded on the work you do. Hard work DOES pay off here. There are hardly any teachers who will take it easy on you. They know that you had to work hard to get where you are, so they expect you to work even harder.

    Tips for prospective students

Remember that grades are important, but to keep a social life. You WILL get stressed, so its important to find a balance that not only works for you, but actually gets the job done right.

    Campus Safety

The UC Merced campus is off the beaten path, so of course wandering alone at night probably isn't a smart thing to do. But other than that, campus is a safe place. People that aren't supposed to be on campus generally aren't because it is a little removed from the city, but there are still raccoons and mosquitoes to worry about.

Great for these types of students

Great for students from suburban areas, especially in San Joaquin Valley, and for those who want a well-rounded education. For those who want real connections and lasting friendships with professors and fellow students, and who need close attention in order to thrive academically and socially.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a lake on campus, and another one half a mile away, at walking distance from the dorms. Both are very beautiful and make good places to relax and calm down from the stresses of college life.

    Bang for the buck

There's definitely a lot of bang for your buck, you get a wholesome education, not only from the courses and degree, but from the people and how great friendships develop and thrive. Merced's biggest strength is the sense of community. It's small but very close, and we all look out for one another, teachers and faculty included.

    What to do for fun

There are a ton of things to do for fun. Merced's night sky is gorgeous, so stargazing is always interesting. In town, there is a nickel arcade, a mall, and plenty of food places, as well as two major movie theaters. The Office of Student Life is always planning something, be it a Bhangra Bash or a concert, or maybe a Job fair, things along those lines, in the main quad on campus, so most weekends are jam-packed with activities!

    Food and Dining

The Dining Center at Merced is alright at best. There isn't much variety, and the food quality itself is mediocre, but the biggest drawback is that none of the options are very healthy, nor appetizing. Don't expect gourmet meals and fancy silverware. It's a canteen, it's enough to get by on, and at least it's edible.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at Merced is excellent. Everyone is friendly, and the Resident Advisors are all very well-qualified. You are expected to do your part to keep the peace and the serenity, but that isn't so difficult. There are two types of housing on campus; suite-style and community-style. The suite-style buildings have one bathroom per every 2 rooms, and the community-style buldings have one community bathroom per 4 rooms. They are well-maintained and are relatively new, so they are in very good condition. Facilities are clean and well-kept, and any problems with furniture or other parts of your room are solved within a few days, at most 4. Overall, they are very satisfactory and I have no complaints.

    Academic Rigor

In terms of academic rigor, UC Merced is not a walk in the park. The most challenging courses are related to the Engineering majors, but every class is taken very seriously. There is no such thing as an Easy-A class here. In every course, you must take notes. You must attend lectures regularly, you must take your education very seriously in order to succeed. A college acceptance is one thing, but keeping your spot as a student here is another.

    Tips for prospective students

There is plenty of room for everyone here! If you are serious about your education, you'll find there are plenty of resources to keep you on the right track and to help you in your academic endeavors. Especially in science- and engineering-related fields, there are many research opportunities that you don't need to fight tooth and nail for, contrary to other University of California campuses. If you're interested in Humanities as well, there are always ongoing social experiments that anyone can take part in. UC Merced is a suburban campus. It is far enough from town to thrive as its own community, but still close enough to have a fun day out. If you want city life, but to keep nature close, this place is perfect. But, just because the atmosphere is comfortable doesn't mean that the academics are as comfortable either. Classes are very rigorous and challenging but nothing a little hard work cannot overcome.

    In three sentences

UC Merced's student body is very dynamic and incredibly diverse. There is enough healthy competition in terms of grades and intellect to keep you on your toes, but it seldom gets out of hand or progresses into negative behavior. The campus atmosphere is relaxed and very well-balanced, and if you enjoy nature's beauty this campus is perfect for you. There are lakes and paths on campus to relax near during finals week, there is always some type of cultural performance or event in front of the Kolligian Library, and everyone is very friendly and comfortable.

Free kettle corn every first of the month!

    Bang for the buck

Everyone I have talked to has some form of financial aid and a decent amount of it.

    What to do for fun

Travel about two hours out of town or join a club on campus that will travel two hours out of town. But there are often great deals to travel outside of the city provided by the school. We're still growing.

    Food and Dining

    It could be healthier.

    Tips for prospective students

Really do not be discouraged by others opinions of this school. Often times people base their judgements of the school from the city, but the University and the city are two completely different worlds. Take a tour here, if it is meant for you to be here, you'll know.

    In three sentences

For my first year, I can sincerely say I am pleased with choosing to attend UC Merced. I am able to talk to my professors everyday and with the campus being so tightly knit, forming bonds is not hard at all. It's become my home away from home.

    Campus Safety

The campus is relatively safe and security can be seen regularly patrolling around, especially at night. I have always felt safe at school--even around midnight. If you are ever afraid to walk anywhere at night you can simply hit one of the blue lights that are stationed around the school and a security patrol personnel will escort you to wherever it is you need to go.

    Greek Life

There are many Greek organizations that you can join. There are the social fraternities and sororities, the professional fraternities (i.e. pre-med, pre-health), and even service fraternities to choose from.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a variety of clubs to choose from. You can check them out during the clubs and organizations fair or online at the Office of Student Life's site. The clubs/organizations are still developing alongside the school--they are open to new suggestions or ideas you have to bring to the table. If you want to create your own club you can.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The bowl refers to the huge open field area--it's perfect to go here for stargazing at night. The vagina is the nickname for our school's symbol of unity (you will walk through it during freshmen orientation and again when you graduate from UC Merced) The hill is the one hill that you have to walk up from the parking lot and the residential halls to get to the classrooms.

    What to do for fun

Joining clubs and organizations can definitely make your life at UC Merced a lot more enjoyable--each club/organization have their own events for their members to attend. The school will also send out happening emails to notify all students of upcoming events whether on campus or downtown. You can: sign up for weekend trips to Yosemite through UC Merced's Recreation center, take free work out classes at the school's gym (already paid for by your student fees), check out downtown's nightlife (i.e. attend Art Hop), watch a movie, etc.

    Food and Dining

The food that is served on campus is mediocre. There is currently only one dining common to eat at. Inside the dining commons are multiple stations for you to choose from i.e. the Grill, Asian Kitchen, etc. You choose what you want and then pay the cashier with either cash/credit or, if you live on campus, with your Catcard (student ID). Other places to eat on campus are the Market which (like the dining commons) is also located by the dorms down the hill, and the Lantern which is located on the first floor of the library (closer to the classrooms).

    Dorm Life

I highly recommend living in the suites (Valley Terraces). I lived in Kern Hall for the first two years that I lived on campus. The suites are pretty spacious. You can choose to live in a two room-suite or a three room-suite. All suites come with a living room and a big bathroom to share. You can think of it as a mini-apartment on campus. If you want more of the stereotypical dorm life as seen on TV, you may want to choose the other dorm options. Every year more and more dorms are being built.

    Academic Rigor

I would imagine that the academic rigor at UC Merced is just like any other UC. I have heard from one of my professors that the academic curriculum is actually stricter than other UCs because UC Merced is still under review by the UC system. If you want good grades or to simply pass the class, make like a good student and attend classes, take notes, visit professors and TAs at office hours, ask questions for things you do not understand, and study/review frequently so you do not pull an all nighter the day before an exam. I am a firm believer that hard work really does pay off. Do not depend of grade curving--you should get whatever grade you get for your hard work.

    Tips for prospective students

Remember that going to college is a huge step for your life. I think the most important thing that you can do is try to go into college with an open mind. If you come to UC Merced as someone who views the school as too small and as a place where there is nothing to do, then you will probably not enjoy your next four or five years here. Remember that every school needs to begin somewhere; all schools are essentially built in the middle of nowhere so that the schools have the ability to expand. If you do choose to attend UC Merced, keep an open mind--get to know your dormmates (I would recommend living in the suites), get to know your professors and TAs (they will make your classes easier and more enjoyable), join a few clubs that you might have the tiniest interest in (you might actually end up loving them), join that sports team, sign up for a trip to Yosemite through the school, visit the Career Counselor, take up that leadership position--when you get over the idea of there's nothing to do in Merced and see the bigger picture you will see that there really is a lot to do.

    In three sentences

UC Merced is still a relatively new school that has a great potential to grow and develop; once you get over the small size, you will see that there is a lot more to the school and the town. One of the perks of attending a new school is being able to easily implement changes i.e. new clubs or organizations; student voices can be easily heard. Another thing that I love about the school is the overall family and friendly vibe UC Merced students and staff/faculty have; you got to visit the school to get what I mean.

    Campus Safety

Definitely a safe campus at any hour of the day!

    What to do for fun

There's two movie theaters, a small mall, some pretty decent restaurants, Yosemite is nearby, San Francisco is 2 hours north. Otherwise you'll probably spend the rest of your time studying or at parties/kick backs

    Food and Dining

There is only one dining commons. The food was great for the first 2 weeks then it was just no good. Some people really enjoy it but I became tired of it and had over $700 left in my meal plan by the end of the year. The food is pretty fattening, prepare to gain your freshman 15.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are nice and some buildings have bigger rooms than others. I stayed in a triple that was bigger than most my freshman year, its kind of a hit and miss with roommates but they try to accommodate most on campus concerns

    Academic Rigor

If you are interested in attending the school of natural sciences, make sure to study hard and keep up because the material is tough, although not impossible of course

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure they have your major before you attend!!! Also do not be afraid to become involved with clubs on campus, it can be scary at first but most people at UCM are friendly. Keep up on your reading too! Don't buy or sell your books through the bookstore, they rip you off.

    In three sentences

Its a small but clean and pretty great campus. There are lots of clubs that you can become involved with. Its a small town but it allows you to stay focused on your studies.

    Campus Safety

Very safe campus. The kitty-cat cops, as my friend would say, are always on the look out for unusual activity on campus.

    What to do for fun

There isn't much to do in Merced. But trust me you'll meet the most amazing people here that will help you enjoy your college experience.

    Academic Rigor

You may want to think that since it is a new campus professors would be more lenient when it comes to course work right? Totally wrong this campus is like any other UC campus. It is hard but the upside of this campus is the small class sizes, so if you need help just talk to your professor or TA.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't judge a school by what other people say, choose the college you believe will support you through your academic endeavors.

    In three sentences

UC Merced is very different, in comparison to the other UC campuses. It is a small campus which gives it that private school feel. It is very mellow, easy way to focus on your academics and also fairly easy to get involved on campus. Overall, it is a great school it just takes some adjusting.

    What to do for fun

For fun? What isn't there to do? The university offers students the opportunity and transportation to explore, to get in touch with nature. Want to go to Yosemite National Park? Just pack your things, hop on a bus, and off you go. Maybe, you want to spend your weekend at the beach? Then join a trip party and discover the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Baseball fan? If there is a Giants game, you can find yourself sitting and cheering on your team. From Circus du Soleil to hiking expeditions. There is plenty to do. The cozy downtown allows you to enjoy theater productions, movies, and diverse fine restaurants. Finally, to get rid of the stress, there are nightclubs for all kinds of people. Whether its some country you're in the mood for, or delicious salsas or cumbias, you can find a place to have fun safely.

    Academic Rigor

I know that many are critical of the easy admissions program of UC Merced. Many think that because it is new, because it admits so many student it is under qualified compared to other UC's. Yet, this is a very poor and false assumption. Unless the critics were a student in a UC Merced class, as well as that of other universities it would be hard to compare. From the first day of orientation at UC Merced, the expectations were declared and the standards were set. We are treated as highly competitive students. Academically we are expected to not only succeed but excel, constructing the prestige that University of California, Merced deserves.

    Tips for prospective students

If it's academics you are interested in, this is the place to go. The biggest lecture halls seat approximately 300 students, not 1,000. Its hard to be lost or confused when you have to opportunity to ask questions in lecture or spend professor-student time during office hours. As an expanding university, the opportunities to be a leader and become involved are endless. University of California, Merced will fulfill your expectations, it will help create an intelligent and prepared individual, ready for the world.

    In three sentences

Though at first I was unsure about attending UC Merced, this university has become more than just the university I attend, it is my home. This 21st century school has so much to offer: qualified professors, small classes, and a great atmosphere. It has provided me with some of my best life experiences, I have learned so much from my classes: I cant wait to see what the next 3 years have to offer.

    What to do for fun

Make friends and walking around campus, I have come to realize that socializing saves you from homesickness and boredom. Going out to eat in Merced, going to the zoo, fair and theaters. The theaters are almost always empty at night so it is just like a private screening or movie night with your buddies.

    Food and Dining

The food is great the first week after High School and the summer vacation. It becomes repetitive, I suggest eating out once in awhile with a friend, doesn't have to be somewhere fancy. The food is improving though.

    Dorm Life

Quite interesting and very enjoyable, I highly recommend it for first year students. Great opportunity to make friends and relax when you need too, even if it's before or after a midterm, final or any class. And for those of you who hate curfews, dorm life has no curfew, but it does have quiet hours.

I believe that there are alerts sent out to students if anything goes wrong. They campus does a good job to ensure the safety of their students.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs at UCM. I'm thinking about joining swim, archery, dance, and many others. Sports is a good way to maintain a healthy body so my suggestions is to join a sport or clubs.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I heard that many students tend to live off-campus because of the mansions around UCM. It was suggest that it had a Jacuzzi and big rooms with walk-in closets and your own personal bathroom. I haven't yet to encounter one but hope that there are houses like that.

    What to do for fun

I would say hiking around the campus or clubs would be a good way to pass time. There are many things to do besides party all the time. We're close to Yosemite so I suggest you could go surround yourself with nature.

    Food and Dining

It is better than HS food in the sense that there are more choices. You won't starve to say the least because you are paying for a meal plan. If that doesn't work out, there are restaurants surround UCM.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs that I wish I could join, but simply do not currently have time for, like the Ohana club which is known for the Tahitian and hula dancing styles, and AMSA which is students joining the cancer fight. Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The most unusual thing about my campus is the structure which is the highlight of the university; it is a large silver structure that looks almost like a U, which represents the beginning of our journey and once we graduate is where we end our journey. This structure is known as the Vagina. Quite Ironic for the name and the shape of the structure if you asked me.

    Bang for the buck

There was always plenty of activities held by the residential advisors and a variety of clubs on campus. I have personally joined three amazing organizations--Alpha Phi Omega, Delta Epsilon Mu, and the Philippines Alliance Association.

    Food and Dining

Although the campus food was... not quite the best, I will always cherish fish taco friday especially during Lent and my pasta Wednesdays.

    Dorm Life

I met my best friends in the dorms, and although there are pros and cons to the dorm life, I do quite often miss those days. It was definitely an experience to remember!

Join clubs. Go to events. Go to the movies. Go shopping. Go bowling. Go off campus to eat. Not a whole lot to do in Merced but if you join clubs you will find different things to do.

    Food and Dining

The food in the dining center and other campus locations is good but not high quality or by any means worth the price. It is your average cafeteria food except it is way more expensive. I eat there from time to time when I have the money and I am really desperate for food. There are also not a lot of healthy options.

    Dorm Life

I live at home so I do not know a whole lot about the dorm life. I have been in some of the dorms and think they are nice. I'm not the best person to rate on it, though.

    Academic Rigor

Most people think that because UC Merced is not big or established that the level of academic rigor is low. That is not necessarily true. You will have easy classes, but you will also have not-so-easy classes. Do not underestimate any one instructor. If your goal is to do well in your classes, plan on spending most of the time you have outside of class studying or doing homework.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know your instructors. You have so much more access to them at UC Merced than at a larger campus. They are typically flexible with meeting hours and can help you succeed in their classes. Join clubs or start clubs. There are not a lot on campus but whatever you don't see, you can always look into starting something that interests you. Don't expect to see a college town. UC Merced is fairly new to Merced and the town still needs time to grow. Most of the fun you'll find will most likely be participating in campus events or organizations...so get involved!

    In three sentences

UC Merced is a college with a small town, yet interdisciplinary feel. All staff and faculty are courteous and accessible. You will often work in small groups and be able to meet directly with your instructors for any help you need.

    Campus Safety

Our campus is very safe. There are 24/7 security service and we have our own little police department on campus in case of an emergency and there are these blue emergency polls so that if you feel in danger you can go to them and press a button and campus security will aid you. Also we have RA'S on duty 24/7 in case you need them to come to your room they will do so gladly. And we have security going around campus making sure everything runs smoothly. So I feel very safe here.

    Greek Life

There are plenty of sororities and fraternities. I haven't looked into them a lot but if you contact the student services on campus they can probably give you more information, but there is a festival in which they come out and give you information themselves.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs and activities such as HEROES which have to do with a healthy environment, there are Hermanas Unidas which is for Latin women who are interested in community service. And many more.

Great for these types of students

For students who want to really get an in depth education it is great because you can concentrate a lot and get stuff done. And for students who are into research this is the school for you because that's what this school is based on. I would say any type of student fits in at UC Merced because it all has to do with the experience the student makes for themselves.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

For instance sometimes if financial aid cover a lot then you can end up only having to pay no more than 800 dollars for tuition although it varies for everyone. But having direct communication with the financial offices can be in your best interest because they can help you more in depth with your financial need.

    What to do for fun

There are many clubs one can join, and there are many festivals throughout the year to promote them so you will hear about them eventually. But during the weekends it is kind of boring here. Sometimes there are some fun things happening such as Karaoke nights and water slides and there are plenty of places to go out to in the city it just takes a bus ride to do so if you don't have a car.

    Food and Dining

Okay the food is okay. It just takes some getting used too. If your a person that can eat burgers and pizza all day then good because there are many types of burgers and pizzas. But the school could use more food variety but its understandable because it is a small campus. Don't get me wrong there are still plenty of healthy meals it just takes a longer reach.

    Dorm Life

I live on campus to be more specific in the Sierra Terraces. It can get loud but an RA on duty is always available at all times of the day in case there is an emergency or if you need them to tell your neighbors they are being too loud. The room depending on which you choose tend to be very comfortable. Being away from home is tough but the RA'S assigned to every buildings are very good at helping everyone adapt to our new homes.

    Academic Rigor

I am a freshman, so I have not seen how hard the courses can really get, but based on my own classes I would say they are appropriately difficult but maybe would be easier if I would study more often for them.

    Tips for prospective students

Come in with an open mind. Also come ready to learn and ready to get your assignments in on time because letting them pile up does not reflect a good grade. Also depending on the courses you decide to take some classes might have midterms very frequently and it is better to be prepared than be sorry, so be ready to study!

    In three sentences

I would rate UCMerced a 8 out of a 10. Even though the campus is not that big and neither is the city the people here are very friendly. The best part about it being small is that you can actually get to meet your professors, shocking for it being a UC school.

    What to do for fun

Because the school is located in the central valley it is close to Yosemite and only two hours away from San Fransisco so it is easy to take a day trip to either of these destinations. When the whether is nice its easy to go cool off at Lake Merced which is only a five minute walk from the campus. Merced has a quaint downtown district to go explore with great shops and restaurants.

    Food and Dining

There is only one main dinning hall and it has no variety. The dinning hall does have reasonable hours however, and is only closed for a total of four hours during the school day. They also provide a student coffee shop as well as a small market place to get basic groceries.

    Dorm Life

The student housing puts on lots of fun events for students living in the dorms. These events help you make friends in your hall as well as from other dorms around campus. Also whatever type of dorm you get (single, double, tripple, or quad) all the dorms are new and provide a lot of space for studying and relaxation.

    Academic Rigor

I find all my classes to be extremely fair, and the professors are very reasonable. As long as you stay on top of your reading do your homework getting good grades should be fairly easy. Office hours are very important at this university it gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with the professor as well as getting a different perspective on learning through teachers assistants.

    Tips for prospective students

One of the first difficulties I encountered was there are very few art related courses so don't expect a great variety. One great resource to use is the many Facebook pages that connect current students that enable them to get first hand information on classes, buying books, and transportation so make sure to take advantage of them. Also Merced is very close to Yosemite so my mom bought me a Yosemite season pass which came in handy when me and my friends wanted to leave Merced for the weekend and go camping.

    In three sentences

UC Merced is a really good school if your interested in Natural Sciences, Engineering, or Psychology, because it is a new university they offer research opportunities for undergraduates in these fields. Also because it is a small campus the class sizes are small and professors have more time to spend with individual students. There are tons of fun events put on by the school such as carnivals, art galleries, and social events which makes for a good on or off campus student life.

    Food and Dining

Movie theater, bowling, eating at several diverse restaurants, hanging out with friends. engaging in the community.

    Food and Dining

The on campus food is the same everyday, there is not difference in the menus. Overall the food is manageable and some days will get tiring. Off campus food at some restaurants are delicious.

    Dorm Life

I lived in the dorm for the first 2 years and it was the best experience of my life. Dorm life enabled me to have the friends that I currently live with now. The dorms are all brand new.

    Academic Rigor

Courses are at the utmost importance at this school and require quite a bit of time in order to get good grades. for every hours of class, requires 2 hours of study time for that class. This is effective.

    Tips for prospective students

Merced is still a growing city and university. You make the best out of the time that you are there, so do not expect everything to be handed to you. Everything requires time and effort in order to grow and you have to make the best of what you have.

    In three sentences

A very diverse school that acknowledges students for their hard work. It is the newest University of California and provides all students with opportunities that are not available to just anyone but UC Merced students. Campus Safety

The campus policemen are constantly patrolling the campus, they are friendly too so don't be afraid to say hello. There are also these blue polls on almost every corner around the campus. If you dial the number on these then an escort will come and take you where ever you need to go. I feel very safe here.

    Greek Life

The Greek Life is very active! They are constantly hosting events such as parties or selling food. While some of the parties do have alcohol (these are typically for upperclassmen 21+) a lot of the contain no alcohol and are simply there for people to go dancing and have a great time.

    Clubs and Activities

MANY activities! Just got to keep an eye open for them!

    What to do for fun

What I do for fun is typically go to the movies either downtown or uptown with some friends. I usually go downtown and explore the various shops. I love all their desert shops and coffee places! I'm a big foodie so Merced really accommodates this because they have diverse food places. What I also do is join in on the club and Greek activities. The Greek life hosts many friendly non-alcoholic parties- fun to go dancing!

    Food and Dining

Food is typical college food! Good in the beginning but after eating the same things for 2 years it gets boring. But, the campus allows restaurants to put up carts up in scholars lane so that students may get different kinds of food. Overall the scholars lane food is really good and the dinning center food is alright.

    Dorm Life

My freshman year it was very cramped, but this is typical of all college freshman. The Residential Assistants were very welcoming and provided many activities so that freshman could get to know each other and the campus. My sophomore year, I go to live on the in-campus apartments. These are very spacious and comfortable. While there aren't as many exclusive activities for us, there are more liberties since many of the people living in this area are 20-23. We are treated more as adults and individuals.

    Academic Rigor

I really love my major! The classes are diverse and interesting. The professors actually help you get into graduate schools. They also offer many research projects.

    Tips for prospective students

    1) Always seek out office hours! The professors are very friendly and welcome students to attend office hours. 2) Form study groups. 3) Manage your time wisely. Yes it's good to study a lot but also take time to have fun with friends and join in on some of the campus activities/clubs. 4) Take advantage of all the student help services (i.e C.A.P.S and the Doctors office).

    In three sentences

This school has an incredibly friendly and warm environment-everyone is really nice. The professors are always available and really helpful. Also, because of the schools size university opportunities are less competitive and more readily available.

    Academic Rigor

If you stay involved and do the readings and work it will not be very rigorous.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of office hours and stay involved in class because the professors like interaction.

We have our own police on campus, which patrol the school day and night. There are poles around campus, and if you are ever in need of help or don't feel safe an escort will come get you.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs on campus! The clubs haven't been formed that long ago, so you still have an opportunity of putting your mark on what the club will become. (Which looks great on a resume.)

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students who like the outdoors, and who like places with small populations. It's quite peaceful here.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

For each set of incoming Freshmen, they are to walk across our bridge and through our Beginnings Statue to symbolize their initiation onto our campus. It allows the students to meet each other, and meet the Chancellor as well.

    Bang for the buck

The school gives its students plenty of financial aid, and scholarships are also available. Since the school is so small, getting a job is not as difficult as it would be on other campuses.

    What to do for fun

What I have come to learn is that the city of Merced is not the most exciting place. Yes, there's a movie theatre, but the options for social activities aren't plentiful. BUT, within the campus, you will not get bored. There are so many extra-curricular events and clubs you can be a part of.

    Food and Dining

The food in our Dining Center is great! There are so many options. Mexican, Chinese, Italian, etc. Unfortunately, the same things are always served, so it can all get a bit boring. If you aren't careful, you can also gain a few pounds.

    Dorm Life

Since the campus wasn't built that long ago, the dorms are still new and are pretty awesome. The Residential Assistants, which are in charge of the dorms make sure that the buildings are safe, comfortable, and fun. You meet many people, and create life-long friendships. The only downside is that it can get pretty loud.

    Academic Rigor

The campus is a part of the University of California system, and like all the other UCs in the state it offers challenging courses. With the right effort, it will prepare you for the career you chose. What makes the classes good is what every individual can take from it.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not allow the fact that the school is new turn you away. Take it into consideration, not by its prestigious background, but by what it can offer you. Actually do that for any university out there, you never know what you can find. Merced may be small, but the opportunities available are plentiful.

    In three sentences

I give UC Merced a ten. Students are given the ability to get into research early in there college lives. The fact that the school is small allows for a close community which can be useful when networking.

    What to do for fun

I can take a walk to the lake or I can downtown and head to the mall or the movie theaters. Merced is also not that far away from San Francisco or Yosemite, so if you makes plans accordingly, you can make a weekend out of it.

    Food and Dining

The Dining commons has a fair variety of food, but I always wish they had something more.

    Dorm Life

In high school, I went on a lot of college road trips and was able to see the dorms of different universities. But I do have to say that UC Merced has probably the nicest dorms I have ever seen. It could be due to the fact that the campus is still relatively new and so are the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

The classes here are academically challenging as probably any other UC campus. However, since we have a smaller student population size there is more ease in finding tutoring, one-on-one interactions with professors, or clinic hours.

The school may be a little out of the ways bu there are things to do if you find them. There our movie theaters, Yosemite's is close so you can go hiking or go to the slopes. If you want to be active there are many clubs, sororities, or fraternities to join, just choose by what interest you. You also receive messages on various events that are taking place through your email.

    Food and Dining

Everyone says the food is repetitive but they are adding more food options and variety. Still it can be crowded so choose carefully when you are going to eat but the Ozzi system thins the crowds a little bit.

    Dorm Life

The quite hours are generally followed but it can get rowdy as the weekends approach. Since many students leave on the weekends the campus is calmer and not as busy. There are kitchens if you want to cook for yourself and since pots and pans are provided you just have to buy the food. There is also barbecues to use.

    Academic Rigor

It can be difficult but the small class sizes and the professor's availability make it a smother transition. If you go to class and look for help from peers and professors alike you can do well in most classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Read up on all the school information before hand. A lot of people I knew were a little clueless as to how their meal plans or cat dollars worked. Also keep vigilant of your meal fund as it can vanish fairly quickly or you'll be bumming off your friends or eating instant noodles on exam days. Know the hours of operation of the Dinning Commons and plan accordingly, or be left hungry, there is a limited service between breaks but there isn't much variety

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

The campus is extremely safe. The campus police are seen regularly around campus, and there are stands with call buttons located around campus for anytime someone feels they are in need of being escorted somewhere. During my time attending so far, I have not once felt that I was unsafe on campus.

Great for these types of students

UC Merced is great for the introverted and quiet students. There is always plenty of study space, Lake Yosemite in walking distance for additional study space. You are not pushed to participate in anything you are not interested in.

    Bang for the buck

UC Merced provides a significant amount of financial aid, which allows the college experience overall to be more enjoyable. While college education is, in general, extremely pricey, UC Merced is one of the most reasonably priced colleges that I applied to.

    What to do for fun

The University of California Merced is not by any means close to the rest of the city of Merced- it is located more in the outskirts of the city, and isolated. While transportation is provided in terms of a bus system, even in the city of Merced there is not much to do at all. Even if students were to take advantage of the transportation provided, to get to town the bus ride overall can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour long. In regards to the city of Merced, there really is nothing to do. Students at the University mainly depend on activities that take place on campus for something to do. Events are planned by RAâ??s and organizations regularly, usually at least once a week. These activities allow students at UC Merced to have something to do, since the city of Merced doesnâ??t really provide anything significantly fun.

    Food and Dining

The food at UC Merced is something that, while acceptable, could use improvement. While the hours of the dining center seem to be something that everyone has an issue with, the quality of the food should be improved before looking into extending the hours. Some foods at the dining center are of good quality; however others simply taste like typical cafeteria food. While there are few items in the dining center that I refuse to even try, there is a large variety of options to choose from. Even with these options however, at times it seems as if you are eating the same thing day after day, because nothing else seems appetizing. It is an option for students to submit ideas of dishes for the dining center to have- however I feel students are not aware of this option; if they were then there is potential for additional options and variety to be added to the menus in the dining center. Overall, the food somewhat what would be expected out of a high school cafeteria- some options are good while others, not so much.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at UC Merced makes living on campus significantly more enjoyable. The campus is large enough to enjoy the college atmosphere, yet small enough to where everything students need is within walking distance. All on campus housing is less than a ten minute walk from all classroom buildings, the dining center, and other locations on campus, which is extremely convenient. In regards to the dorms themselves, the different buildings have different living styles- from apartment like suites to traditional dorms with community bathrooms. In all housing buildings the janitorial staff does an amazing job of keeping the buildings clean. The dorm rooms themselves are very cozy and comfortable to live in. The closeness to any building on campus makes the college experience so much more convenient, without having to worry about a building on the opposite side of campus being too long of a walk. The housing buildings are quiet and lounges are peaceful places to study in if you need a change of scenery from your room to study in. The dorm rooms are neither too small nor too big, and are exactly what you would expect when thinking of a typical dorm room in college.

    Academic Rigor

It is obvious that the success of students is a top priority at the University of California Merced. The small class sizes contribute significantly to the quality of the classes offered, and being able to form one-on-one relationships with professors. The professors at UC Merced clearly put the success of their students first, and are always willing to answer any questions, and see students outside of class. Free tutoring is offered to students as well, so there is really no reason to be falling behind in any classes. Even if a student did not choose to participate in tutoring, there are plenty of professors and other individuals on campus who are willing to help out. It is not as difficult to get into the classes that you need as it is at some other schools, and advisers are always willing to help you put you on track to graduation, whether itâ??s through helping you choose what classes to take or answering any other questions you might have.

    Tips for prospective students

Be aware that the campus is located far from the city of Merced. Other than activities on campus, there is not much to do- and that leaves plenty of time to put academics first.

    In three sentences

UC Merced is focused on the success of its students. The campus isn't too large, and isn't too small easier. Professors and advisers at UC Merced are extremely helpful and clearly put education as a top priority.

Great financial aid! The school really takes care of you.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are clean and nice. A little crowded and life here can be dull at times.

    Academic Rigor

If you put effort, you can succeed. Most classes aren't too easy but they aren't impossible either.

    Tips for prospective students

The school has a lot to offer but you have to find it. Get involved and try different things. Try not to judge it to harshly based on the fact that it's still developing. Not all the programs are as well established as other schools, but if you are innovative, you can fell free to start any club or organization yourself and get a lot of funding.

    In three sentences

UCM has a ton of opportunities if you pursue them. It's easy to get classes, financial aid, and research experience. Overall, a pretty laid back school where students don't have much to worry about other than their academics.
