Categories Comments Great for these types of students UCR is great for students who enjoy learning about other cultures and those who like warm sunny weather. The school has good research programs for those interested in sciences as well as a good business program.
Tips for prospective students However great a college is, it is not for everyone, so I recommend using the host program to get a feel of the campus and see if it is what you are looking for, and at the very least, take a tour. The campus is great and so is the school. Also apply for financial aid, even if you think you wont qualify, file for FASFA, it is how most colleges determine eligibility for financial aid. Look into the organizations offered, there are a lot, and if you are interested in honors, apply early. Lastly, research the school and see which school is the best for your interest, take into account what you want from college. If any prospective student has any questions I would love to answer them. Look for Kimberley Hutter at UC Riverside on Facebook, and just let me know that you are a prospective student.
Bang for the buck UCR is one of the most affordable UC's. It seems like a lot when you first have to pay, but if you get involved and utilize everything that is being offered to you, then it is definitely worth it. As a student you will have access to the Recreational center, tutors at the learning center, and your education of course. Students living on campus also get meal plans and there are several programs put on to help make the college experience everything you want it to be. If you get involved, you will get more than your money is worth. Also a very high percent of students qualify for financial aid to help pay the cost.
Am enjoying being here I love going to UCR, the student population is so diverse, there is a lot to learn from other students. Also there are so many organizations and classes that you really get to explore and find things you love to do. Living on campus brings a lot to the experience, you get to participate in programs put on just for residence, strong friendships are made with hall mates, and you become very familiar with the campus. The environment at UCR is one that fosters the four values of the Tartan soul: integrity, accountability, excellence, and respect.
Am learning a lot Academics at UCR is fast paced because it is on the quarter system, but that doesn't make it easier. Students are expected to learn the material and learn it fast. There are several ways to get help and to further understanding in a subject. Professors make themselves available for one on one discussion during their office hours, TA's are assigned to discussion sections with about 30 students and also have office hours. Some courses even offer supplementary instruction at the learning center, and tutors are available for many subject. However there is a lot more to learn at UCR then just what classes have to offer. The organizations and programs here help students learn life skills as well as emotional, spiritual, physical and mental excellence.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UCR is great for students who like diversity and at the same time aren't afraid to go a little far from home, because UC Riverside is only an hour an a half from Los Angeles and not that far from San Diego either. At the same time, UCR is great for students who like to explore their majors through the different colleges that Riverside offers and meet great, new people everywhere you go.
Tips for prospective students For students picking out a school or want to attend UC Riverside, I suggest that you work hard and look for a school that gives you a good financial aid packet. At the same time, how like Riverside the campus is diverse and has many opportunities for students. In addition, to check out the school and the location that it is located.
Bang for the buck UCR has different opportunities to be able to receive financial aid through work-study and finding an on-campus job. It is a worthwhile school and offer scholarships.
Am enjoying being here Living in the dorms and meeting new people make it a great experience to be in UCR. I like it because you are able to interact with many people and try out different organizations. At the same time, explore new classes and meet new professors. I enjoy being in UCR, because this school has a lot of diversity and school spirit. And it is a great learning environment. And at night you can see the beautiful stars in the sky!
Am learning a lot In transitioning from high school to college/university, UCR helps students to be able to learn new subjects as well new skills. At the same time, students would be able to meet new people and become more confident in their environment. You can learn a lot from people's perspectives about different things as well your surroundings. You learn to become independent and responsible over time.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This university is great for all students, especially those who want to learn more about themselves as well as others. Also, UC Riverside is a great place to learn about independence as well as being responsible for yourself away from your parents.
Tips for prospective students Get involved on campus! There is much more to do than to just sit in your dorm room and be on your computer all day long. There are tons of events that go on every week, but it's up to you to find them and to attend them!
Bang for the buck UC Riverside is one of the most affordable UC campuses among the UC system.
Am enjoying being here Students here are friendly and the learning environment is great, especially if you're an incoming student from high school.
Am learning a lot With the great diversity in the student body, one gets to learn and live with others from other ethnic groups. By living with these different people with different cultural backgrounds, one gets to celebrate the diversity that makes up our world.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you are planning on attending the University of California, Riverside, it is best if you like a big campus with a variety of different students. Also, students should like to learn things quickly, for the pace is a quick 10-week period of time. The classes are very large, too big for professors to know each student by name. But each professor does their best for their students.
Tips for prospective students There are an incredible amount of resources at UCR and it is best if students use all of them. Not only are students paying for these resources in their tuition, but they are extremely useful. Using them often is suggested.
Bang for the buck The University of California, Riverside is a bit pricey. However, There has been construction going on on campus to improve the university's campus for its students. Also, tuition goes to all of the university's fine resources. Some of this includes the library, gym, health center, online resources and so on.
Am enjoying being here UCR has a variety of buildings in which the students can dorm. Dorming is the best way to get to know people and make friends. The hall for students becomes like a family. Their are also many activities this university has for its students. Dorm halls have their own meetings, their are various clubs to choose from and join, and their are also fun filled activities that the university plans, like concerts for example.
Am learning a lot The University of California, Riverside is based on a quarter system. This means that the students have finals every 10 weeks. There are 4 quarters overall. It may be a little difficult to go from being accustomed to the semester system and then go to quarters. But, professors at UCR to a great job in making sure that their students understand everything being taught. There are TA's available for questions, and professors have office hours in case students have any further questions on the material. There is also a learning center in case students need tutoring. Everything is very helpful.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students If you plan on commuting, make sure you get to school earlier in the morning. The parking lots fill up insanely quickly. Don't be afraid to talk to professors. As cheesy as it sounds, they are there to help you learn, and I promise they don't bite. Office hours are a great way to get to know your professors, TAs, and get help on homework and project questions. This connection will help a lot when you need to do research in your major later.
Bang for the buck The recently remodeled buildings, like the HUB and the Student Recreation Center, provide ways for the students to participate in extracurricular activities. In terms of classes, since it's a UC, the professors are at the tops of their fields as they delve into their specified research topics, and the Teaching Assistants and Lab Assistants are all Master's degree students, so you'll definitely have an amazing all-around learning experience!
Am enjoying being here The campus is so alive! There is so much to do during the day in between classes. The HUB lounge has so much to offer by way of entertainment, including the flat-screen TVs, multiple game systems, free WiFi, and Foosball tables. The people are so friendly, too! It seems everyone's just all smiles!
Am learning a lot The general education classes (especially Chemistry and the Math 009 series) are set up so that you are basically taking a year of the same class, so the material covered isn't too fast-paced, and it certainly is manageable. There is a wide range of classes to choose from, and fulfilling your breadth requirements certainly means you'll never be bored in class!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for students who want to go to school with people of many different backgrounds. Also if you like the desert weather!
Tips for prospective students My tip would be to make sure you have walking shoes, and find where all your classes are before hand!
Bang for the buck UC schools are expensive, but they are worth it. You have access to so much, and not mention they have a great reputation. UCR is a fairly new UC so it has no real stereotypes that go along with its name, besides being a very diverse school.
Am enjoying being here The weather is great if you like warmer weather. The students and residents are very diverse. No one is unfriendly and it is very easy to find things to do and to get around.
Am learning a lot All of my professors and my TA's are very helpful in making sure I understand and gain knowledge on the subjects that are being taught to me. I am able to find time to study even though I live in the dorms, they are set up to be a good learning environment. I have access to outside help in the campus learning center.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UCR is great for students who are serious about learning. Those who do not care about their academics and are out socializing most of their time will be gone by the first quarter. UCR is a research based institution, so for those of you planning on getting a PhD or some other type of advanced degree, this is a plus.
Tips for prospective students Get involved in school. Go to office hours; this will help out a lot, especially when it is time to get letters of recommendation.
Bang for the buck Despite the increase in tuition due to budget cuts, UCR is really affordable compared to other schools. The class sizes can be as small as 12 students and as large as 200 students depending on the type of class being taken.
Am enjoying being here UCR is a Great place. Everyone here is friendly. The campus is big but it is not huge which makes it easy to get around. The school has many great resources for students and there are an infinite amount of ways to get involved on and off campus (there is even a recreation center). UCR is also conveniently placed in Riverside, so there are plenty of things students can do during their free time such as go hiking, snowboarding or surfing.
Am learning a lot The professors here are really great and they are always willing to help out. The level of difficulty in the classes is great, but getting good grades is something that can be done if you go to your professor's office hours and ask questions. In addition to office hours, there are plenty of resources, such as discussions and supplemental instruction which are really helpful.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UCR is a great university for students that welcome diversity and opportunity. UCR is definitely and up-and-coming school. This year, our student mark exceeded 20,000 for the first time in UCR history! It truly is a great school.
Tips for prospective students Please don't make the same mistake I did freshman year-STUDY instead of EXPLORE half the time! Yes, I know it's a whole new world to discover. But keep in mind that you didn't come here to fail. You don't want to struggle in a certain class that serves as a huge prerequisite for many other classes, do you? If you need help, pursue it! People want to help, and the resources made available to you prove this. Don't forget to keep your head on straight as well. College is the perfect time and place to find yourself and try new things, but not if it harms your well being or mentality.
Bang for the buck We all know that college is expensive. Yet with all the opportunities laid out for you, countless free grand events and giveaways, club excursions, strong friendships and relationships, good variety of majors, prime location, and the helpful staff that only want the best for you, what more could you ask for the price? The financial aid office is also extremely helpful in making sure you get the state grants and loans you qualify for.
Am enjoying being here I honestly don't believe I belong anywhere else. The campus is well-kept, extremely diverse, and promotes many opportunities for students. There are many ways to get involved on campus! I was extremely surprised of this. I also met so many wonderful people, many of whom are true and kind. The university staff actually makes an attempt to get to know you on a personal level, and is usually very helpful. There are many hot spots in the surrounding areas of southern California, as well as a nearby University Village-made especially for UCR students!
Am learning a lot There are almost countless resources available to students who seek help in subjects. These include, but are not limited to, Supplementary Instruction classes, office hours, teaching assistants, the Learning Center, and success counselors. I found them extremely helpful while I was struggling through tough classes. The quarter system expects you to keep up, and adapt quickly. You will definitely learn tons-inside and outside the classroom!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for those in love with the socal weather! it is pretty hot most of the time. If you enjoy a large diverse campus UCR is for you. The campus is like a park, easy to sit down anywhere and just take a nap. There are many clubs and organizations to join so get involved!
Tips for prospective students Make sure you get involved in the organizations on campus, there are too many on campus to not join at least one. It is important to have fun, but make sure to stay on top of your grades(do the math, its easy to fail and extremely hard to bring a grade up). Make sure you go to Office Hours! They will help you. If you have any questions specifically about UCR's Business Major Facebook up Kenneth Lee
Bang for the buck At the moment i am paying the full price for UCR(why its only 2 stars) But i know many people who receive a lot from UCR in financial aid, including a large variety of on campus jobs (More just came with the completion of the Coffee Bean on campus!)
Am enjoying being here Riverside itself is quite boring. There is not much to do in town, however, it is 30 minutes to an hour away from everything (snowboarding, beaches, malls, etc etc). Riverside is conveniently located in the middle of it all. Only downside is that you will need a car to get to places that are more fun...
Am learning a lot The amount i am learning from UCR is much more than i expected. Although the information is a lot more compared to high school, the difficulty is not much harder than i personally expected. The professors and GSI(graduate student instructors) are all approachable, however be aware that there are some with heavy accents where it may be hard to understand. Make sure you enjoy the class and you'll do well.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Like citrus, having fun, and recieving a higher education.
Tips for prospective students Try and take courses that which you would never have wanted to take. Allow yourself new opportunities. Don't have a bad attitude. Everyone is there to learn so allow them that opportunity.
Bang for the buck There are institutes that are less expensive and with the same educational value.
Am enjoying being here I like the atmosphere. Everyone is friendly. Though the teachers are open there are those who aren't and instead may be less willing to aid.
Am learning a lot I have found that I must put forth more effort in my classes. I am constantly studying for my exams and at the same time learning from what I study.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for any kind of student interested in becoming someone great in life, so that's pretty much everyone. They have great athletic programs, music programs, and various clubs and activities that can fit anyone's personality.
Tips for prospective students My suggestions for new incoming students, is to make sure before you come here, do a lot of scholarships and also work on a FAFSA so that you don't have to pay that much for college. It is much easier to use scholarship money than to have to use your own. Work hard on your high school classes so that you won't be struggling during college. Once you are here, stay on top of your studies and classes. It's best to not get too sidetracked because there is no one holding your hand any more in college. Its hard to get back into gear once you have lost your way, but stay the course and you will do beautifully.
Bang for the buck Like all great schools, the price for education is not cheap, nor is it that expensive. The price at first may seem outrageous, but all you have to do is check what exactly will you be paying for and deduct that from your tuition. For example, I am not living in a dorm so i don't have to include that in my tuition pay. There are several other variables that I don't have to pay for, so it is all a matter of what do you really need and what do you not need.
Am enjoying being here The environment here is so peaceful and also energetic at the same time. The people here are very friendly and are willing to help out if you ask. There is always someone here to guide you around school. When you want to escape a long week of studying and homework, there is always something fun to do on campus and off it as well. There are lots of activities around campus and even better just within walking distance, the University Theater is available to students, and if you get lucky like I did, you can also have a class there as well!
Am learning a lot The teachers here at UCR are really there for their students. Depending on the subject you are in, the interaction of level between student and teacher can very from just going to their office hours and asking question or set up a lunch date so that the meeting is more casual and relaxing for both the student and the teacher. They spend their time making sure that everyone understands the material that they are teaching. They welcome questions because that shows them that there are people her that want to learn and that motivates them even more.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who can deal with burning hot weather for about 4 or so of the months. Students who enjoy diversity. Students of almost any kind, really.
Tips for prospective students Apply for the Honors program because the students who are enrolled in Honors get an earlier date to choose classes in comparison to other people. The food isn't terrific at school, but the best food offered would be at The Barn. The Barn has a cool ambiance and even offers concerts and open mic nights on certain days! Don't eat the oranges off any of the trees on campus, apparently they test on them. For an estimate of how big the campus it, to get from one end to the other would probably take about an average 15 minute walk.
Bang for the buck Although with the new tuition increase, UC schools are still incredibly more cheaper than private schools. In comparison to the private, more expensive schools, I think the toughest issue is fighting for classes. At a public school, it definitely is a bit more difficult to get a space in the class you want. Some people struggle a bit for classes, while others don't at all.
Am enjoying being here Meeting new people is definitely a highlight of school. School is what you make of it. Be sure to keep updated with your R'mail (the school's assigned email for each student) and check out the random flyers around school. There are lots of opportunities to get involved, see a free movie, attend a free/cheap concert, or get free food.
Am learning a lot UCR is on the quarter system, so it's extremely quick and fast paced which can be an advantage and a drawback. It's an advantage if there's a class you need to take but dislike because the class goes by in a snap. It's a drawback, however, because since you only have a limited amount of time in each course, you have to learn material extremely fast and have midterms practically every other week. Discussions are usually more helpful than the lectures, depending on your professor.Go to ALL lectures, discussions, and if possible, office hours. Keeping up on reading is a must because if you fall behind, it'll be impossible to catch up.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck I was worried that I would not be Financially stable all by my self. My parents can not help me with my tuition because they can barely survive supporting the rest of my family. i have learned a lot on how to save my money and to use it wisely. I have also learned many job skills and how to write a good resume.
Am enjoying being here Coming to UCR I did not know any schoolmates or family that is attending here but then that did not stop me to come. I am really enjoying my time here because I get a chance to be me with out having my parents behind my back telling me what not to do and what to do. I do feel lonely at time because I do not have any close friends or family with me but this has gave me a chance to meet new people. All the people that I have met here are very nice and are people I can relate to.
Am learning a lot Entering into UCR I was nervous and did not know what to expect but then once things started everything went smoothly. i have learned a lot since i have been here and still learning. All of the classes that I have taken i walked out learning something new all the time. my peers have also taught me a lot of things that i have not thought about or been taught.

Am enjoying being here In the beginning I thought I would hate Riverside because it's in the middle of no where. I thought I would hate dorming too. But the fact is, right after I started school here, I began to love it. I made friends here, and I don't have to worry about not having fun and being in the middle of no where because as a college student, you're pretty much too busy to go anywhere anyways.
Am learning a lot I'm taking 3 classes now, and it's keeping me really busy. I enjoy learning and studying with others.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Students who want to experience a school in which is outrageously diverse, has a lot to offer, great study environment, and students from all across the world, it's something they would want to look into. Students of different races, and coming internationally, this is also a great school because it'll be easy for them to fit into the school.
Tips for prospective students If your looking at becoming a part of UC Riverside, coming from a first-year student, I say the only thing that affected my decision in coming here was the weather, which is not even that bad. I come from Oceanside, CA, which is in San Diego county, and is right next to the coast, so I'm used to a breeze, but I'm currently getting comfortable with the weather conditions out here. Everything that is offered here at this school is perfect for any student though, great faculty, staff, students, so many things offered for students to do well in there classes, and get into great careers!
Bang for the buck This school takes advantage of every dollar they receive. This may be a hot city, but there's Air Conditioning in every single building, and the weather isn't even that bad. The school offers so much, and obviously uses your every dollar to good use!
Am enjoying being here I enjoy being here in this great environment at UC Riverside. I love being here, it's actually my new home, and I love calling it my new home. Riverside is in the middle of nowhere, but as a student here, I haven't caught my self bored, or doing nothing, there is always something to do out here! This school is amazing!
Am learning a lot UC Riverside is an amazing a life-changing school. It has completely motivated me as an individual, and inspired me to go far in my education. With all that has been offered for First-Year students with Bear Facts, FYSS, great faculty, great students, great staff, etc. I myself have got really involved with campus, but have also learned not to get overly involved to over work myself as student, but getting involved with Student Organizations on campus, participating in what's given from the school, such as the First-Year Success Series, and also doing work-study.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UCR is great for students who like to study and socialize at the same time. There are many restaurants and study area on campus where students can just eat, and chat about almost anything!
Tips for prospective students Study hard, don't fall behind, take notes, listen carefully, and exercise regularly to maintain a healthy lifestyle!
Am enjoying being here I enjoy Riverside. At first, I wasn't familiar with the school, but I slowly adapted to it and I ended up loving it! The people here are amazing and kind. Need a helping hand? Students at UCR will be there to help you. The location is not at the best, but I still manage my way around and find activities to do on my leisure time.
Am learning a lot College is a whole new experience for many people. UCR provides great education for all students, but it is the students who are willing to accept them or not. The professors are very friendly and helpful so don't hesitate to ask if you want to know more!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students LGBT students (the LGBT resource center is one of the best), international students, people that believe they will do well in a small to medium sized school (aside from intro or general series classes, the class sizes are usually less than 60 students and discussions have about 30 students).
Tips for prospective students Go to office hours for your TAs and professors. It helps more than anything. Get involved on campus; it keeps you from getting burnt out from academics and instills some UCR pride. Take the ab attack class at the gym and you won't get that freshman 15.
Bang for the buck UCR is one of the most affordable UC schools. There are work study programs available to help with the cost. UCR also offers a lot of tutoring and study sessions for a variety of classes. I really like the student recreation center because it's cheaper than joining a gym (it's about $30 that is part of tuition) including unlimited classes and use of the facilities. There's all kinds of workout classes at different times of the day making it convenient for everyone.
Am enjoying being here I've enjoyed the classes and professors I've come across while at UCR. It is a very, very diverse student population with a lot of programs that focus on helping minority students (LGBT, chicano, african american, etc.). These programs provide a lot of support to students and are an easy way to meet people. The Greek community (fraternities and sororities) at UCR is less competitive than other schools, which has it's pros and cons, but overall I enjoy the Greek activities at UCR.
Am learning a lot Since UCR is on the quarter system, it makes it difficult for students to slack off. The fast pace keeps people focused and on track. It also encourages students to develop good time management skills and keep their priorities in line.

Categories Comments Am learning a lot UCR offers various types of classes that can expand your background knowledge even about basic things but UCR offers classes like Ethnic Studies to Molecular Biology. Besides classes, UCR allows to students to learn about themselves like their cultural or spiritual backgrounds through the variety of people and clubs/organizations. UCR is a great place to learn about yourself, life, and about others.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Hard-working students who can relax and hang out with friends. Especially for people who are used to heat, because it gets hot in Riverside.
Tips for prospective students Tour the campus before classes start so that you know where exactly your classes are. It's embarrassing to enter the wrong classroom! Join clubs and try new things. There is always something going on in Riverside so it's easy to do things that you've always wanted to do.
Bang for the buck UCR is definitely pricey. But it really is a great college experience and it is worth it.
Am enjoying being here Riverside is definitely a friendly campus. No matter what your major is or what year you are, you will find people to get along with. There are a million clubs to join so all you have to do is search for the specific club you want!
Am learning a lot The professors are extremely passionate about what they are teaching, and they try to make it fun for students. There are a lot of students who come from different backgrounds so you really get to broaden your views on topics.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Bring comfortable shoes and be expected to walk to campus everyday in the heat. Use the resources that UCR is provided on campus. Be sure to use your dining meals and dollars wisely!
Am enjoying being here UCR has a great range of diverse people which is a great way to learn everyone's culture. Dorming is great experience and I suggest that every student that is going to be attending should live in the dorms. There are many organizations for the diverse culture here at Riverside. You become great friends with your roommate, hall mates and the people that are in your clubs.
Am learning a lot UCR has a fast paced academics where the quarters go by fast and professor's provide lots of help. The campus provides a lot of different resources if you are struggling with what you're learning. The professors expect students to catch on to the material rather quickly and it may be difficult to adjust to but there are TAs that help you during the course. There is a learning center where there are tutors that students are able to go to. Overall, UCR has great academics for all classes and every class may be difficult.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you like diversity: There are many people around the world that come here for an education. If you want to see different cultures and learn about them, there's a good chance you will.
Tips for prospective students Campus isn't too big, which is a plus if you have back to back to back lectures/labs. Walking, biking, skateboarding or scootering, it's a good distance between where you are and where you need to go. Consider research early in your schooling, if this applies to your major. If you don't dorm your first year, you probably won't get fat. But really that's half the fun/experience of first year. The other half is learning names and knowing people that you'll see for the next few years. But then after your dorming experience you want to save some money, look for apartments/roommates as soon as possible, which means.... Learn to cook. Some days you add salt, some days you don't. There's your variety. It's a learning experience, at least for me. If you're going to take a picture of the clocktower, don't submit it as your project in Introduction to Photography class. It's been done, in every angle possible. Watch out for course registration, it's getting harder every year.
Bang for the buck For a while, I thought I had to buy something called WebAssign for the rest of my college career. It's really a waste of money if you think about it. Textbooks set you back, so look for previous students of the course who are willing to give you a good deal. Some of them camp outside of the respective classroom at the beginning of the quarter, which is convenient. Printing is a dime a page, but that's after you exhaust several spots that allow you to print for free in limited quantities. For your money, you have resources like the Learning Center, mostly for the first two years of college. The gym, also known as the Recreation Center, offers courses that keep you busy/amused if you are bored easily.
Am enjoying being here Within the campus, there are always events going on, maybe except finals week. Multiple job fairs allow you to gain exposure to various companies and businesses, cultural market gives students the opportunity to buy various arts and crafts from around the world and staged events like concerts and demonstrations are also available on a weekly basis. However, if you've got class from 10 till 2, you'll most likely be missing out a great deal. I pass the time by going to gym, if not for the workout then at least for the nice air conditioning. It's pretty hot out here! Outside of campus, there are plenty of ways to hang out or volunteer. Riverside as a city is pretty big, so exploring is half the work/fun.
Am learning a lot Many of the professors have a detailed syllabus to tell you exactly what will be covered. This becomes important for studying for exams and even pop quizzes. Having took most of my breadth courses and most of my major courses, many of the professors and teaching assistants like to just dive right into the material.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Chill, laid-back students who are eager to learn.
Tips for prospective students Get to know your campus as fast as you can. Network in classes and the dorms, it WILL benefit you in someway. Buy books ahead of time.
Bang for the buck Generally, all the UC's have the same tuition rate. However, UCR's housing cost is significantly lower because they are not in the middle of a huge city like Los Angeles. Also, UCR gives a generous amount of financial aid.
Am enjoying being here If you have a full schedule, or a job, or are involved in activities around campus, you will never be bored. However, if school is all you do Monday-Friday then UCR will be boring to you. My advice is to get involved in some way, whether it be a club, sport, fraternity/sorority, or even a job.
Am learning a lot Because I am an engineering major, I take many core classes in Calculus, Chemistry, and Physics. In these classes, I have certainly learned a lot. But to be honest, it depends on what professor you get in your class. The depth of learning is what you make of it. If you put in all your effort in a class (which can mean even teaching yourself) you learn a lot. I have also had the pleasure of learning from my peers. Making friends in classes is one of the best things to do.

Categories Comments Tips for prospective students Always attend all your classes and review everything that is on ilearn. It is extremely helpful to attend office hours in which you are able to gain answers to the questions you have that you are not able to ask during lecture. Also, take advantage of the resources around you! There are tutors that you pay for automatically and they are very helpful!
Am enjoying being here University of California, Riverside is a beautiful campus filled with staff who word hard alongside their students. It not only has proffesors who are willing to assist you on your journey to success, but there are also other people who care about what you want to achieve and will guide you step by step. The amazing scenery, variety of clubs and the opportunities to become leaders are within reach. I enjoy how there will always be a place to meet people who share the same interest as I do.
Am learning a lot There are countless students in UCR that learn numerous amounts of knowledge about their choice of major. Not only do the student gain intelligence about the major of their interest, but there are also classes available to those who want to explore other subjects. The professors are very knowledgeable and helpful in many ways. Every time a student comes out from a class, they learn something new and it expands their intelligence.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students -Students capable of handling hot weather -Students interested in the sciences (there is even a medical school built on campus)
Tips for prospective students Read your textbooks, review lectures and notes immediately after class, and utilize office hours when necessary. If in need of help, ASK. The faculty and staff are willing to assist you.
Bang for the buck UCR is definitely less expensive than most other colleges. A bonus is that the campus is close to home so I did not have to worry about extra costs for dorming. The fees may seem pricey at first but if one utilizes the resources available (all payed for in fees), then it should be well worth the cost.
Am enjoying being here Although it was hard transitioning from high school to college, the overall evironment is friendly. I was timid at first but after getting to know some classmates, I find UCR a rather fun place to be at.
Am learning a lot UCR is packed full of wonderful professors and TA's who are willing to help you. One of the biggest things stressed is to learn for understanding, not for memorization. Students who are serious about their education will make the best of their learning experience by engaging with professors, peers, and the material taught in class.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I recommend this college for it's outstanding Business program, the College of Engineering, and the intern positions that it requires most of their students take. The intern positions really give you an inside look on how things really work in a business.
Tips for prospective students Really make this a top choice. It's still a UC, so you still have access to all the other UC colleges, library collections, and the different internships that are available to all UCs.
Bang for the buck I'm getting my education, and I'm actually learning, so it's great for prospective Engineers.
Am enjoying being here The close drive to everything is great! Riverside downtown also has a bunch of things to do, even though most people don't really know about it. It's a hidden gem, you can pretty much just go sightseeing down there, and it's really pretty.
Am learning a lot I've gotten really helpful professors so far, and they all really like teaching the younger lot of students. Some of the professors are also very engaging, and likes to teach via examples. I applaud their teaching styles, and hopefully I have good professors for next term. However, I do worry about the math department, because most of their professors are visiting professors, so I'm not sure how that is determined.

Am enjoying being here I like coming to school here. I am living in the dorms, and I am never bored. There is always a lot of diverse activities. There is lots to do here at UCR.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students I would say that this is really for people who understand how to work hard but are also really open minded, and for those people who are social. As i have witnessed people who are anti-social and closed minded tend to not enjoy themselves, especially if they are dorming, remember it is only fun if you get along with your whole hall, not just your roommate.
Tips for prospective students Use amazon to buy your books. cannot stress that enough, do not save all your work for sunday night, as you will be stressed out. Bring many summer clothes and winter. If you are a person who enjoys going out, you will need a car, but as i said its not the location who matters, but the people you are with. Most of all enjoy yourself, its college.
Bang for the buck I feel like somethings are overpriced, but as i understand this is school is very generous when they offer student aid, so i believe that helps balance it out a little. The amounts they claim for things are exagerations, just remember that. you can save money through many methods.
Am enjoying being here Its fun, and the people are extremely nice. I enjoy spending time with my friends, and its not the location that matters but the people you spend time with that does. And the people here are the best, every day is a new adventure, just be prepared to travel more at night, since it does get hot during the day and cold during the winter.
Am learning a lot The classes are not easy, but the teacher's and the teacher's assistant are so helpful and nice, that if you need any type of help I am sure they will offer it to you. Just dont be lazy because the work does build up, and while the teacher's are helpful they cannot provide miracles where you have failed. Remember as one professor told me, they are no longer teachers. that being said, they are still helpful so dont be afraid to ask for help if you are lost.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Engineering program is one of the best out there. It's somewhat small therefore they pay a lot of attention on you. The advisers are awesome and the professors are great as well.
Tips for prospective students I recommend you visit the school before deciding because it's so beautiful. Also keep and open mind when deciding for which schoolto pick. UCR is really great.
Bang for the buck If you're a low income student you don't have to pay for a lot. Living in the residence halls is really and amazing experience and I recommend everyone gives it a try. I hear commuting is hard, therefore, I recommend that you all live campus you first year. Plus, you meet the best people.
Am enjoying being here The people at UCR are so down to earth. Everyone is so friendly, honestly, you meet some of the best people here. The students are hardworking and the adventures are really awesome.
Am learning a lot I have learned so much from my professors. I'm a Computer Engineering Major in BCOE and so far everything had been great.

Categories Comments Campus Safety campus safety is always provided with in campus, if requested by students they may have campus escorts. the campus has its own police department.
Bang for the buck with our own student identifcations we get discounts in and out of school.
What to do for fun there is plenty to do for fun whether it is hanging out with friends or joining organizations where you meet people. in many occasions it is free to have fun in school with the activities brought up by the own students. there are also game rooms in the dorm buildings.
Food and Dining the food is always changing which is unique. there is always the choice of eating at a dining restaurant or eating in one of the multiple restaurants located on campus.
Dorm Life the dorm life in my university has been an outstanding experience that will be a memorable one. dorm rules are lenient but strict, which is a good signal of school regulations. there are multiple dorming buildings, each and every one different, which gives liberty of choice to students.
Academic Rigor advanced academic rigor is required. reading is a major component in higher educational standards. professors are demanding but mostly reasonable. the courses are challenging but also enjoyable.
Tips for prospective students prospective students should lookout for a truly splendid learning experience at the university of california riverside. there are multiple educational programs as well as extra-curricular activities that do well to the community and to one. get involved the most you can before you miss out!
In three sentences university of california riverside is an exceptional higher education institution that dedicates itself to providing quality education. the university is among the most diverse schools in the nation which makes it unique. there are multiple organizations in this institution that provide comfort and pathways to a successful college career, for ex: credited first year programs.

Categories Comments Campus Safety before attending ucr, i had heard many stories about campus violence in general. so i was concerned about safety. but, ucr does not have those problems. the campus police are very helpful and appear to be very thorough in their duties.
Greek Life there is a variety of sororities and fraternities to chose from. i joined sigma kappa and i am so glad i did. we are a great group who work and play together. we do alot for the community and have fun at school. these are the people that i know i will be in touch with and network with for as long as life permits.
Clubs and Activities ther are so many options here, i think there is something for everybody. check it out as soon as you can.
Great for these types of students students who want an excellent education while enjoying the recreational facilities and student events.
Bang for the buck i think ucr is a great place to get an excellent education and make life-long friends.
What to do for fun there is a lot to do on campus. outdoors there is swimming, tennis, jogging, and more. indoors, most of which is on the ground floor of most dorms, are rooms for games like billards and ping pong, other rooms are equiped with exercise machines, or a computer lab. and there are meeting rooms for study groups. there is also a student rec center. off campus there are nearby malls. there is a small mall right across the freeway which accepts your growl card for movies, restruants, and all the other shops there.
Food and Dining there are a variety of dining halls, quick snack stores, a food court (highlander union building), and vending machines around the campus.
Dorm Life freshman dorms rate one star. they are like living in a closet, with a roommate! hopefully, as a sophmore, you can get into an apartment- type dorm, which i rate five stars. they are four to six bedroom apartments with a kitchen and a common area. oh yeah, there is a bathroom for every two bedrooms.
Academic Rigor you need a lot of self discipline. plan your study time for each class. it helps to study with someone. and, it helps to use some of the study techniques you learned in high school. although, i found mind mapping very helpful because, with a little practice, you are creating color-coded pictures, which are much easier to remember and study for mid-terms and finals.
Tips for prospective students freshman, to avoid slipping grades, you need to study more than you did in high school. so, jion a study group and talk to your counselors or tas. they are hoping you will. used books are usually in near-new condition and are much cheaper. take a break, have fun.
In three sentences academically, ucr has become one of the top schools in the country. there are a lot of free social events, such as concerts and other entertainers, exercise equipment, game rooms, computer labs, and meeting rooms. the campus is constantly growing with new buildings and student facilities.

Categories Comments What to do for fun there is a variety of organizations and clubs that offer plenty of programs to attend and meet new people with common interests.
Food and Dining dining is not like mother's home-cooked meal but it is served as an all you care to eat buffet style. dining services offer a diverse menu that varies from day to day so it's never the same food the next day... expect the french- fries .... dinning always offers that. on campus they also have a variety of food joints to choice from.
Dorm Life dorms are great. living in the dorms gives one the opportunity to meet new people and, like myself, become more social with others.
Academic Rigor as a former freshman, i have found my classes to pertain helpful information and relevant to my major.
Tips for prospective students as you start off your freshman year, everything may seem different but take the opportunity as a way for you to be more outgoing or become more serious about your academic and social life. as a former freshman, i find it important for one to go to the professor's office hours. professor's are willing to help you when you ask, also use your campus resources. the campus resources are already being paid within your tuition, so use them; go to tutoring if you need to, use the gym, go to office hours etc.
In three sentences ucr is wonderful campus, which is diverse and very welcoming. ucr provides various programs that help students achieve in their academics. overall, ucr is a great place to meet new people and create a balanced life between academic and social life.

Categories Comments What to do for fun near the campus is a place called the university village. here you will find a starbucks, movie theater and a couple other popular locations that will meet your needs. if that doesn't help your craving to have fun then you have tyler mall, in riverside, the riverside plaza, in riverside, or bowling in moreno valley. all these locations are roughly 10 to 15 minutes away from campus.
Food and Dining the food here is decent. you have your good days with the food in the dorms while other days, you might be questioning if the chief chef knows what he or she is doing. in any case, you have the option of eating at some decent restaurants on campus: panda express, stacked (sub-sandwiches) and a couple others that will please whatever your craving. try the sushi at sushi roll or the pizza at la fiamma!
Dorm Life dorm life honestly depends on how you make it. students have had terrible dorm experiences while others had awesome ones. what's the dish on a legit dorm life? make friends! go to the events that your respective dorm building has. try and do things that will not involve law enforcement and stay away from drugs and alcohol.
Academic Rigor your academics are key to success and despite ucr's reputation of being a easy school, your academics are extremely rigorous and needs extreme observation. it is strongly suggested not to underestimate your classes and the content given. you also must remember that you are on a quarter system: very fast paced.
Tips for prospective students advice i would give you is to take advantage of the professors office hours! i would say its most imperative to do so because you get a lot more insight than you would just attending class. seek a lot of advice from your t.a.'s and counselors; they are there to help!
In three sentences ucr is a great institution and very accommodating as far as making sure your academic success is just that: a success. they have a great staff that have done years of research and help you with all the different obstacles that come with a new life at a university. in addition to the great staff, you have numerous resources available at your disposal to make sure you do well in your studies, and in your life!

Dorm Life it was one of the best experiences of my life
Academic Rigor if you study and go to lecture, you'll do just fine

Categories Comments Campus Safety there is a campus safety escort service available for all students, so if there is ever a time where you are walking to your car or dorm and you are afraid to walk alone you can call the escort service and they will send an escort to walk you to your destination.
Greek Life there are various fraternities and sororities, both social and educational.
Clubs and Activities there are a variety of clubs and activities available for all students. due to the fact that the school is very diverse, there is a club out there for everyone.
Great for these types of students this university is great for students who would like to meet others from other backgrounds. this school is one of the most diverse universities in the nation.
Bang for the buck although the universty's tutition and housing fees are pretty expensive, i can honestly say its an enjoyable experience and well worth your buck.
What to do for fun visit the botanic gardens, go to the university village theatre which is located about 5 minutes walking distance from the school, block party and heat concert, and nooners activities every wednesday held by the bell tower.
Food and Dining the food in the residential restaurants is not that good. let's just say that you will most definitely miss home cooked meals. however there are days where they serve very good food like pasta and tacos. also, you can never go wrong with the multiple options of cereal. the food at the hub is very good. there are multiple locations for different types of food located on the campus.
Dorm Life the oppurtunity to live on campus in the residential halls is an exceptional experience. you are able to make connections that you might not be able to if you commute. also, there are various programs held by housing that allow you to have fun and meet a lot of people.i recommend living in the dorms for all college freshmen. word of advice, do not dorm with your high school best friend because things do change !
Academic Rigor depending on the classes you take determines the rigor of the courses. there are some classes easier than others and also some more diffcult than others.
Tips for prospective students do not dorm with you high school best friend. if you dorm, bring food from home in case they do not serve good food one day, join clubs and get involved.
In three sentences this unversity is very diverse, you will meet people from a great range of different backgrounds. there are many different oppurtunities for students to become involved with the campus and community. living in the residence halls is an extraordinary experience.

Dorm Life the residence hall at ucr are excellent. if you ever have the chance to dorm do it! educational and social programs are constantly held throughout the academic year inorder to bring out the best of the dorming experience. it is a great way to meet people.
Academic Rigor ucr has exellecent proffesors who prepare daily for their lectures. they are available during office hours or by appointment. the classes may seem difficult but thats is to challenge and bring out the student's potential.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Not only does the campus have the emergency blue posts, they also offer what is called Campus Escort. It is a service that a person can call to have someone walk with them back to wherever they need to go. A police station is also basically on campus. Police are around a lot and sometimes even sit in parking lots at night time.
Greek Life The Greek Life at UCR is extremely active. All of the fraternities and sororities are outside in the middle of campus all of the time. There are always weekend events put on by fraternities as well.
Great for these types of students Anyone can easily fit in here. There are so many clubs and groups that a person can find one to fit in without trouble.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a place called the Botanical Gardens on campus which is just a large area of plants that can be found in Riverside. There are also many citrus trees that can be found scattered throughout campus.
What to do for fun The school offers three large free concerts every year. They always bring popular artists to the school. There are also many different smaller concerts and events. There is usually an event about once a week happening. Sororities and fraternities have events as well. Outside of school, there are malls to go to, clubs, hookah lounges, a movie theatre (and a drive in movie theatre) as well as basic bowling alleys, parks and theme parks
Food and Dining The dining hall food is good, but it gets old pretty fast. With that said, the HUB offers a wide variety of food. There is also a couple of on campus restaurants as well as food trucks. The University Village which is about a 15 minute walk offers a huge variety of food with many basics such as Del Taco, Denny's, Starbucks, and Quiznos. Across the street are Taco Bell and other places. If you have a car there are so many options that are about a five minute drive from campus.
Dorm Life The three dorms at UCR are very fun and a great way to meet new people. Do not be shy, talk to people across the hall from you, the room next door, or maybe in a completely different building. For the most part, the friends you make while dorming are the friends you will live with after and have for the rest of college.
Academic Rigor College is not easy no matter what your major. Working hard and actually doing all of the reading is a necessity.
Tips for prospective students Take the placement tests seriously. They can really affect how behind or ahead you begin your freshman year. Use all of the resources available. Talk to the teachers. Office hours are very important and getting to know a teacher can really benefit you.
In three sentences The school has a beautiful campus with great Highlander spirit. The events that the school puts on for the students weekly really allows a student to feel welcome and excited to attend college. The classrooms are very clean and in great condition with new technology. I love UCR.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is substantially lit with lights illuminating walkways and paths. Escort services are made available to students.
Greek Life Fraternity and Sorority life is an enjoyable alternate to residing on campus at UCR. From forty individualistic houses to choose from, Greek life is a largely considered option in college housing.
Clubs and Activities There is a club for just about anything and for anyone. Associated student groups such as the Graduate Student Association and the ASUCR, club sports involving rugby, surfing, karate, hiking, and ethnic clubs are active components in the well-being of UCR student life.
Great for these types of students Student of any socio-economic background should definitely apply. UCR offers many opportunities to seemingly any student attending.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The HUB, Highlander Union Building, hosts a variety of dining options and club activities for UCR's students, visitors and faculty members. The Rivera Library also hosts the largest collection of science fiction and fantasy writings in the region.
Bang for the buck UCR is better known for its academics than its party life. Students who chose UCR will be better prepared for any field they choose to enter. The money spent on tuition at UCR is undeniably put to good use.
What to do for fun The Pacific Ocean's well known beaches of Newport and Huntington, the San Bernardino Mountains, deserts such as Palm Springs and Twenty-Nine Palms, Hesperia, Victorville, Lake Arrowhead, Arrowbear, and Big Bear offer recreational activities such as skiing, swimming, fishing, riding motorbikes, and much more, are all located approximately an hour away from UCR. On campus, concerts have been hosted, as well as fine arts performances put on by students, and the annual Heat, Block Party, and Spring Splash music festivals.
Food and Dining Food is generally expensive on the campus. Dining at the HUB, Panda Express, Habaneros, the Honor Roll Sushi, La Fiamma, the Coffee Bean, Subway, and the Barn, are among the on-campus options. There are also many restaurants in the immediate area surrounding UCR.
Dorm Life There are many facilities to choose from, so take your time. Various housing options aside from dorms include apartments for married students and single students alike, special housing for disabled students and international students, themed housing, and coed housing are offered. The Aberdeen dorms are known to be more social and outgoing, whereas the Pentland Hills dorms tend to house more reserved students. The East and West Lothian dorms are primarily co-ed dorms which are the least preferable dorms on campus due to it's reputation.
Academic Rigor Since the college is quarter based, the pace is fast and intense. Do not be a procrastinator.
Tips for prospective students Attend lecture! Do not expect others to do work for you. Be responsible for yourself and your education. Ask questions and stay ahead of your assignments.
In three sentences The University of California Riverside caters to a diverse population of students and faculty alike. There is wide range of majors available from Anthropology to the new Medical School that was recently accredited. A a clean campus with great access to freeways in the Inland Empire, UCR is easily to find, commuter friendly and convenient.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Most of the fun activities are outside camps. You can head to the beach during spring time or drive to the mountains in winter. The plaza near downtown Riverside is very mellow and fun.
Food and Dining The food is great the first month or so. After awhile, the cafeteria food gets repetitive, however there are places to eat like Scottie's grill. It will save you time in between classes if you don't want to go to the cafeteria by yourself.
Dorm Life The dorm life depends on who you meet and where you end up living. Pentland Hills is mostly quiet but the exceptions are if you are placed in a rowdy hall. I was placed in a rowdy hall, so I went to bed at 3am due to my need to be social!
Academic Rigor The academic rigor can be challenging, but it depends on you. If you put in time to study, it will be a piece of cake. If you don't balance your time then it may be harder than you think.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to fill out a lot of scholarships for funding. When applying and becoming a student, make sure you have all department hotlines on dial. Enter in any programs to get you accustomed to college beforehand.
In three sentences Riverside has the most exciting diversity too be discovered. Most of the professors seem knowledgeable and the botanic garden is beautiful. Unfortunately, it is low on scholarship funds for those who need it.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Horrible. Aren't there when you need them. And when you don't need them, they still don't show up. During rush week, an aisle of cars on a campus street had their windows bashed by low-life, immature fraternity guys and the Campus Police did NOTHING. Like I said earlier, it is not safe to be out late at night here at UCR.
Greek Life Not involved in it. Do not recommend it unless you want to drop out of school and waste your parent's money. The people who are affiliated are in their own worlds here at UCR.
Clubs and Activities Hundreds of organizations ranging from philanthropic, outreach, to recreational. When you have time, just check out a club that you are interested in. I highly recommend joining a club that is fun such as the surf club, ski and snowboard club, SHaRP (Student Homeless Aid Relief Project; you make pb&j sandwiches for the less fortunate), and join intramural sports! You can form a team to play flag football, basketball, indoor soccer, outdoor soccer, volleyball, and more!
Great for these types of students Motivated students who might not have the most excellent of grades to have gotten into Standford or Harvard. You will work just as hard, if not harder, here at UCR and you CAN make a difference. Instead of being an average Joe at some top tier school, why not settle for a relatively good school and be a star?
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Before the homecoming game, the student body burns the opposing teams mascot in order to try to intimidate the other team. We also have a bear and an orange as our mascots.
Bang for the buck Hike up to the C! It has a gorgeous view and it is a great bonding experience if you go with friends. Also, the beaches aren't TOO far of a drive from Riverside, so if it is hot outside and it is the weekend, grab a couple of friends and hit the waters.
What to do for fun To be honest, Riverside doesn't have much of a college town depicted in the movies and what not. It is somewhat different. It is in the middle of a suburban-like community. Not to mention, I do not suggest going out late at night by yourself. It gets a little scary. But if you must, I suggest hanging out with friends at their apartments or trying one of the smaller dessert places around. Of course, some people go to downtown Riverside and hit up the bars or go to the clubs, so it is really personal preference.
Food and Dining There is a variety of different types of food all around campus, ranging from Italian to Chinese. You can try something new every day!
Dorm Life I highly recommend you live in the dorms, especially during your first year at UCR. It will not only allow you to forge new friendships and relationships with new people, but it will allow you to get to know the school better. Additionally, you go through college only once, so you must experience what it is like to live independently!
Academic Rigor The courses here are just as tough compared to any other universities; it actually might be harder than most because most of the students here are motivated and want to succeed in academics.
Tips for prospective students 1) Visit the campus and get a feel for the weather; it is extremely hot during the day and cold during the night. 2) A lot of people look down upon UCR, but it is actually a relatively highly ranked school and it has a motivated student body and faculty members. 3) Riverside isn't the safest place to be out past sunset.
In three sentences It is known for its business and engineering programs, as well as being a research-based university. UCR provides a plethora of student programs that support one's higher education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Nothing major happens on campus, but there is the occasional police report from surrounding areas regarding minor attempted thefts.
Greek Life A lot of frats/sororities; not really my thing, so I can't say much.
Clubs and Activities i Am not really involved in any specific clubs yet, but I do plan on it soon, and seeing as though they have over 500 of them, it shouldn't be too hard to find one.
Great for these types of students adventurous, free-spirited, motivated, basically anyone wanting to have fun, yet study hard as well.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus They still do an Undies Race..
Bang for the buck They do offer you some dining dollars depending on your meal plan. so it doesn't seem as if your wasting your own personal cash on everything. it is more expensive than other post-secondary choices though, some private universities are actually cheaper than the UC system now
What to do for fun There is the option of going downstairs to the activities room, a variety of optional recreational classes are offered at the gym (for free to students). Two malls are within half an hour from the campus, a movie theater is right down the street. Disneyland and Six Flags are within an hour's drive, and so are beaches and places to ski/ snowboard.
Food and Dining In terms of food, it isn't exactly gourmet, yet it is manageable from day to day. I do have to say that the dining services do take into consideration people that are vegan or vegetarians because they offer both of those options, as well as a variety of fruit and greens.
Dorm Life At least in my hall, I love the dorm life. they have transformed from a bunch of random strangers into people I feel comfortable with, and I have formed strong friendships with some of my hall mates.
Academic Rigor it is fairly rigorous in terms of the academic workload, but it succeeds in teaching you what is expected from its courses. With good time-management and motivation for getting the work done, the academic workload shouldn't be much of a problem.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students should be prepared to handle the academic workload of UCR. My tip would be that they prefer to take AVID to help them prepare for the rigors of college coursework, as well as getting more organized and handling their time efficiently. Prospective students should defenitely take a tour of the campus and participate in the over-night host program, if possible.
In three sentences UCR is the university for me because of the diversity and the friendliness of the staff. It far exceeded my expectations as a university because, to be honest, I didn't think much of it at first. It is a campus well suited for one who wants to gain the full college experience.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck UC Riverside is definitely one of the UC's that give you more for your money. Its less crowded than other UCs and the cost of living in Riverside is cheaper, so rent is cheaper for off campus apartments.
Food and Dining The dorm food is decent, but extremely filling, but there are salads and vegetarian food as well. The HUB has some good choices like Panda Express, a 'Chipotle' type restaurant, Pizza, Sushi and a Burger joint called Latitude. New Food Truck opened which has Kogi Tacos and Carne Asada Fries!
Dorm Life I lived in Pentland, where the dorms were suite style, spacious and you shared a bathroom with only 8-9 other people. It was clean and the people are generally pretty friendly. The other two dorms, AI and Lothian are very social and you'll make friends there easy.
Academic Rigor Compared to other UCs, academics have good quality with less competitive edge. The teachers at Riverside generally all care and show their care by answering questions, emails and having office hours. Overall, Riverside's academics are decent and challenging without having to be extremely competitive all the time.
Tips for prospective students Give Riverside a chance! It's a great up and coming school that is progressively getting harder to get into every year. Don't rule UCR out so fast! The campus is nice, the weather is hot and the new Rec Center being built is going to be amazing.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is very safe during the day but it is questionable at night time. There are assistance phones located throughout campus for students to have someone walk them back to their desired location. It is not ideal to walk around at night though, especially farther away from campus. Nighttime can always be dangerous but overall the campus is safe.
Greek Life Greek life is a great way to meet people and network for future job opportunities. It is quite positive on campus and through national philanthropies; the Greek life on campus gives back to not only national causes, but they support the Riverside community as well.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs on campus. From cultural clubs, film, sports, any club that someone can think of most likely exists somewhere on campus. If not, the school is always looking for new ideas and encourages students to start clubs.
Great for these types of students This campus would be appealing to anyone who enjoys nature and the outdoors. There is a lot of diversity, so people who are interested in learning about different cultures and being exposed to them would enjoy going to this school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The University of California, Riverside has beautiful botanical gardens that are accessible each day and a hidden picnic area that many students are unaware of also located on campus. These are interesting places that would be fun to explore.
Bang for the buck To get the most bang for the buck, make sure to use all dining hall swipes and dining dollars before the end of the year. The cost is the same whether one uses all the swipes or not, therefore, it is necessary to spend all of them anyway in order to get one’s money worth.
What to do for fun In Riverside there are not too many things to do for fun, but downtown is quite interesting. Most of the buildings are very old and the Mission Inn located downtown is neat to explore. There are events that occur every so often in the residence halls that can be entertaining and students receive discounts for the movie theater located closest to campus. Also, many people enjoy hiking to the “C” on top of the mountain overlooking campus.
Food and Dining The food on campus is pretty good and not very costly. A majority of the campus food is located in the center of campus, which makes the location ideal. The food in the residence halls is mediocre. The dining services have improved a lot throughout the years so the food is decent at times but tastes as if it were served from a fast-food restaurant.
Dorm Life Dorming on campus is an ideal way to meet people. Students usually have the option between a double or triple, but triples can seem a little crowded. Dorm life is a great way to become more self-dependant, especially if one does not live close to home. The bathrooms in the halls resemble public restrooms and take awhile to get used to, but people do adjust.
Academic Rigor There is not a lot of academic rigor on campus; it is mainly up to the individual. Although students aim for academic success, there is no academic struggle amongst students. Each student strives to do well but competition is not popular on campus.
Tips for prospective students College is a large step from high school, no one will tell another student to do their homework each night or study, this responsibility is up to the individual. Each student has their own responsibilities and must decide for themselves what is right and wrong. Many students are commuters, but there are several opportunities for students to be a part of the school, especially if people do not live near the area.
In three sentences The University of California Riverside is culturally diverse and provides several opportunities for students to explore diversities. Student involvement is important on campus and is represented through clubs and organizations. The faculty provides support to their students by aiding them during office hours to encourage students as they strive for academic excellence.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Actual campus is safe but the surrounding neighborhoods could use some work.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The music festivals are worth attending.
Bang for the buck Tuition keeps rising and fees keep on accumulating. That is pretty much the same in all of California though.
What to do for fun Theaters, shopping, yogurtland are pretty close. Downtown also had restaurants and entertainment.
Food and Dining Diverse in options from the HUB. The dining at the residence halls is good as well.
Dorm Life People are friendly and there are many activities provided by the housing program.
Academic Rigor Outside reading can be demanding at times. Midterms and finals are pretty straightforward in all areas. Do the reading and attend lecture.
Tips for prospective students Take all english requirements first. Try to get the fine art requirement out of the way. Study for the placement exams which could save you unnecessary courses.
In three sentences It has a great diversity in students and majors. Professors are well prepared and dedicated to their students. There are many classes to take that are interesting.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The great thing is that UCR offers 24hr safety, so if there is ever a problem and you need to call the UCPD, then you definitely can. UCPD also lets you know whenever there was a crime located by the school. Another thing that I find very helpful is that if you have late classes and do not want to walk at night by yourself, you can call UCPD or press the blue emergency polls, and someone will come and walk you to where you need to go to ensure that you are safe.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus UCR is Scottish so they do have people who play the bag pipes and you will often hear them playing. By the way, the outfits that they wear are really funny. If you would like to see guys where kilts( aka skirts), you would love to watch them. They are also really good.
What to do for fun There is a gym, game rooms in the residence halls, and they also have a piano. Through the recreation center there is also programs that they do such as having ab attack, kick boxing, zumba, and many other activities provided for all UCR students.
Food and Dining Food is great. You do not always get the same thing and the food is actually freshly cooked unlike high school food.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great. You get to meet a lot of new people and it is really fun because the Resident Advisors and Program Coordinators do a lot of programs and actives to keep the residents involved.
Academic Rigor The classes are not that complicated unless you refuse to go to discussions and lectures, do not do the homework assignments, and do not study for the quizzes, midterms, and finals.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of all the opportunities and resources given to you. Do not delay or procrastinate because it will catch up to you. Once you get behind it does take a lot of hard work to get back up because of the 10 week quarter system.
In three sentences UCR is a great school that offers many opportunities for students to explore and find the major that is most suitable for them. UCR also provides many working opportunities, counseling, tutoring, and many other resources. This is a great campus that I truly believe that everyone would love, if given the chance.

Categories Comments Greek Life Greek life is the best way to make new friends and have a second family that will support you in all your decisions as well as be able to give advice when you need it.
Great for these types of students Those that know what they want to do in life and can afford college.
What to do for fun For fun I usually go to the gym and participate in my University's Greek life philanthropy events and socials.
Tips for prospective students Know ahead of time what you want to major in and do the best you can in all your classes!
In three sentences A fun and active campus yet classes are very limited and hard to get into. There are many restrictions in the Business school as well as requirements that must be fulfilled which usually makes student graduate late.

Categories Comments Food and Dining Food, though nothing to write home about, is good for college. Soon you'll start to miss home cooked meals but that's the price you pay for trying to attain a higher education.
Dorm Life Like any college, UCR provides dormitories for its students. Halls on campus are well-kept and nice. Living in dorms adds to the overall college experience and is recommended.
Academic Rigor While not as challenging as the other UCs, UCR will provide students with the right steps to attaining a degree. Students are required to be very independent as things move at a fast pace.
In three sentences UCR is one of the newer UC campus. Like all the new UCs, it is a rising college. Accepts a variety of students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Be careful if you're around the science part. People get attacked there too often. Girls should definitely carry mace with them. That LONG walk from the Student parking lot to campus is scary at night.
Greek Life They had a ton of frats and sororities. They'd hang out in the center of the campus on their couches and signs.
Clubs and Activities Meh.
Great for these types of students Asians! Abundant here. Indians too. But once you get here, try getting out ASAP.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Libraries are huge. And Anderson Hall is pretty from the outside. The Arts Building is trippy.
Bang for the buck I regret not transferring to the school. The Academic Counselors are utterly useless. They screwed me over, weren't of any help and condescending.
What to do for fun Escape Riverside! Downtown Riverside has nice places, but it's only for like a block or two and gets ghetto. The entire Riverside area is ghetto, minus the Tyler Mall. That's decent. But you're like an 1.25 hours away from the beach and Los Angeles (without traffic).
Food and Dining Good places: The Barn, my favorite place on campus. It is a bit pricier than the rest. The HUB has some good places. There's a Panda Express on campus, and a Coffee Bean.
Dorm Life Dorms like Pentland are nice-ish. But the rest are quite small and you'd be better off renting a house somewhere.
Academic Rigor It's a UC. Professors here graduated from Harvard and Yale and have Ph.Ds.
Tips for prospective students The area is boring- you're at least an hour and a half from anything fun. The UC's have a tendency to raise tuition like crazy. When I started it was around 7.5K a year. When I graduated, it was almost 12K. That is absurd and I'm buried in loans. The Academic Counselors are utterly useless. They screwed me over, weren't of any help and condescending. So be sure to have any grad schools or future plans look over what you're doing, because the counselors just sit there. OH and don't waste money on a parking permit. Park at the UV, it's just as far and you're saving like 300 dollars a year.
In three sentences It's a great school, but honestly be careful. They don't let you change majors easily, they stopped me from pursuing a second major. And they raise tuition like crazy, so you'd be better off either transferring to the school or going to a Cal State.

In three sentences from what i have seen at ucr, it is a community that has many things going on. they have many ptions for food, which is a plus. the only thing that i did not like was the slogan that saysyou are not really going to ucr, unless you are staying at ucr, which is a slap in the face for commuters.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Joining a sorority can be a great way to have fun and meet people. Also, ASPB has many events and concerts throughout the year.
Food and Dining The food is good and varied. The only problem is that many of us tend to over-eat. Staying in shape is important.
Dorm Life Dorming is the best choice you can make because it allows you to be involved in all of the student activities. You also get close to many people and make good friends.
Academic Rigor Many of the subjects can be very challenging, but it is all about how much you study and whether you attend lectures regularly.

Categories Comments What to do for fun In a well designated spot, sites of entertainment are not far from UCR. However, you dont have to necessarily leave the campus for a good time, enjoy the frequent band concerts or parties that the school sponsors.
Food and Dining The food is good and affordable. It is a benefit to those living on campus and to those who spend alot of time on campus.
Dorm Life One major motto of UCR is you are not really going to UCR unless you're staying at UCR
Academic Rigor While the rigor of the academic courses depends on field of study, the expectations are nonetheless relatively high. However, the assistance provided definitely eases the burden.
Tips for prospective students Apply early and do not be discouraged by what others may tell you. While this college may seem smaller and less prestigious than most it is these traits that make it much more comforting.
In three sentences The diversity and potential to get involved here is amazing and enhances the prestigious reputation of the college. Due to the myriad of possibilities to get involved I recommend this college to anyone looking for a well rounded college experience.

Greek Life unsure.
Clubs and Activities unsure but with what ive seen so far its got to be good
Great for these types of students any and all students that like open campus with lots of room to make new friends. great for bike lovers.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus i am unsure about traditions but im sure after my first year i'll have plenty to tell.
Bang for the buck seems like its worth it depending on what you get your degree in.
What to do for fun large campus with lots of activities. pool, sports fields, gym, library, concerts and much much more.
Food and Dining i haven't tried the food but college food is always the best. forget the freshman 15, its more like the freshman 50.
Dorm Life i'm kinda nervous about the dorms because my sisters had problems with their dorm and suit mates. im sure due to the fact that Riverside is such an expensive and serious school that the dorm situations will be better then most.
Academic Rigor it is the perfect school for my required major. they have an outstanding engineering college with many hands one work stations to get a real feel on what its going to be like after college.
Tips for prospective students keep your grades up cause Riverside is a tough school with high expectations. with a 68% graduation rate and a $36,000 price tag you'd have to be very committed and dedicated.
In three sentences love the campus because it is large and beautiful with lots of grass and trees. its a very welcoming environment with kind, helpful students.

Categories Comments Greek Life The greek life on campus is very abundant.
Clubs and Activities There are cultural, academic, and hobby based clubs all over campus.
Great for these types of students The campus is great for students who enjoy the forest, enjoy concerts, who like to be active, and who are very academically astute.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus In the center of the campus there is a large clock tower that many people use as a landmark for directions. The campus is very green with its own garden and a number of large grassed areas.
Bang for the buck The campus has a high nation rating for bang for the buck.
What to do for fun On campus, there are numerous clubs which one can join. The campus life consists of clubs, sororities, fraternities, weekly concerts, and special programs held by the campus' ASPB (Associated Student Program Board).
Food and Dining The campus has food trucks that commonly park on campus as well as its own dining service. Not to far from campus there is a number of fast food and formal restaurants as well.
Dorm Life The dorm life at the school is great. The dorms have a number of outings and events to help create a bond that lasts throughout one's college years.
Academic Rigor Academically there are a number of courses and fields in which one may study. The campus is designed in a manner which groups similar majors while allowing inter-academic students to mingle with each other.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students should make sure to understand what they wish to study before applying, or at least have a concept of what they want to study. In all colleges it becomes easy to get lost in classes and if one doesn't know the focus of their education they could end-up taking excessive courses that were not needed.
In three sentences The University of California - Riverside is a great school. Academically there are a number of courses and majors taught. Each course has an approachable teacher and the lessons are easy to grasp.

Categories Comments Campus Safety if you ever need to walk alone at night for any reason, you can call up campus security and they can walk with you if you aren't comfortable with walking by yourself
What to do for fun anything, the campus is near any attractions like Disneyland, Knott's berry farm, Scandia, Castlepark and the Beach . its not that far of a drive and there's even rock climbing at the school if your interested in that. as well as being in band or the performing arts like drama
Food and Dining awesome food really, there are many restaurants around campus so there is a variety of food you can get, you get dining dollars every quarter and you are able to purchase anything with them. there is something there for everyone.
Dorm Life Dorms are fairly a good size, you get your own desk, bed and closet and if you want to room with a groip of two other people then you can, you can get a double or a triple to get a real college experience
Academic Rigor tight knit family community, if you have anything you need assistance in the staff is always there to help you when you need
Tips for prospective students don't be nervous, think of college as your own high school only bigger. remember that all the students that are in the university are all close to your age so there wont be trouble when trying to make a new friend
In three sentences When i first got on campus i was amazed by how the school environment felt so calm and relaxing, my ideal place for a college. i was able to tell right away that everyone on campus will get along great because of the atmosphere of it. There were signs everywhere to know where you are and how to get to another part of campus. I've also seen their housing and the dorms there are the really great, they have rec rooms where students can just study and or socialize.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There are so many fun sports out here. Not to mention all the concerts we throw for free! & you're so close to the Big Bear so skiing is a must.
Food and Dining The food may be small, but it fills you up real fast. You'll think you can eat more than you usually would, but you would be mistaken.
Dorm Life The people in the dorms are so diverse & hilarious, you'll have a great time here.
Academic Rigor Believe me when I say that reading the book is a must. Don't be afraid to ask questions, & attend all lectures! Its not too hard to keep up with the course work if you start early. Sure, the ten weeks go by fast, but its not too difficult to keep up with it.
Tips for prospective students Always attend office hours, they're so helpful. Don't fall behind on your readings!
In three sentences Its one of the smallest UC's, but in my opinon, that's its greatest feature. The professors and TA's here are so amazing and helpful & you're able to make real connections with them. We also have many events that set us apart from the other UC's & allow us to have a great time!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is an on campus police station and volunteers who patrols and escorts. Even though this service is provided, there are several reported robberies and inappropriate exposures.
Greek Life There are several sororities, fraternities, and co-ed fraternities to choose from. There are no on campus greek houses.
Clubs and Activities The clubs are a great way to meet new people since they always have a social gathering. Most of the clubs are funded by its members and other students because the school cannot provide money. There are concerts, but they mostly consist of not very well-known bands.
Great for these types of students This school is great if you can afford it, if the location suits you, or if you like the programs the school offers.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Many students hike to the C on a giant, rocky hill. It is said that the people who hike to it will get good grades in the future. UCR is one of few schools to have a bell tower, which is played once a week and rings every hour.
Bang for the buck I personally think the tuition is getting too pricey and students are forced to pay for activities they may not use, such as the gym, the campus radio station, etc. Most concerts on campus are free, but most of the bands are not known. Tuition and rent goes up every year, but the quality of each does not.
What to do for fun There are many clubs and concerts on campus. Near campus is a plaza with a cinema, shops, and more restaurants at walking distance. There is a free trolley for students if walking is not a good option. Also, there are more plazas and malls nearby if one chooses to take a bus or drive.
Food and Dining Dorm food can be great in the beginning, but it starts to become repetitive. I praise them for trying to have a variety of food, but they did not think how it was going to be eaten when they served it. For example, when they started serving Pho, they did not give us bowls, but plates. Besides dorm food, the on campus foods are wonderful. There are 3 areas where you can get coffee, including Coffee Bean and a Coffee Bean truck. There is a Taco Truck, Subway, Panda Express, 2 Italian Food, a Mexican grill, and sushi.
Dorm Life Dorm life is guaranteed in your first year, but unless you become a resident assistant you are not guaranteed a place in the residence halls. Most students go to on campus apartments and off campus apartments and houses. There are quiet hours in the dorms, so as long as your hall's R.A. does their job, you do not have to worry about not getting enough sleep because of your neighbors. Dorm life is a great way to meet new people, but it is not when you are assigned into a hall that is shy and anti-social.
Academic Rigor You learn a lot, but the pace is very fast. So if you cannot keep up, you should choose a college with a semester system. Classes are very competitive and can be very difficult if you do not put in enough effort. The school provides a learning center with free tutoring and review classes. The review classes are very helpful for extra help and extra practice, but the tutors for the drop in tutoring are not the best people to go to for help. Consider going to your professor and teaching assistants for help because they took many years to learn what they are teaching you.
Tips for prospective students Even though they are many activities to enjoy, do not fall behind in your classes because it will be hard to catch up since each quarter is only 10 weeks.
In three sentences The climate is mediterranean so be prepared for very hot days. The school and the area provides many activities to do. Academically, it can be competitive and you learn a lot.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Overall, the campus is pretty safe. All campuses experience crime. My was no different. The UCPD actively patrol to ensure student safety is a top priority.
Clubs and Activities UCR has over 420 clubs on campus. It is not difficult to be involved.
Great for these types of students Students looking for diversity on their undergraduate studies.
What to do for fun I was very involved on the campus which was something UCR pushed for its students. Our school ranked 6th in the nation in research, social mobility and civic engagement. Do I need to say more?
Food and Dining As a vegetarian, the university incorporated more sustainable ways to eat. This also helped with the health factors most college dining halls ignore. I felt my diet was maintained and improved with the new systems created to promote better health overall.
Dorm Life Of course dorm life can be wild but it was also peaceful at times. Students took their academic seriously. The living spaces were big enough to have a majority of the things you desired in your room. The common living area was spacious also.
Academic Rigor As an Ethnic Studies major, my coursework was rigorous. I had to be fully engaged with the readings as well as the discussions. Most believe a humanities degree is easy work, but there were pedagogical themes which forced the critical thinking aspect of the program.
Tips for prospective students Enrich your experience by getting involved. It will make this part of your academic career fulfilling.
In three sentences UCR is amazing, not only one of the most diverse campuses within the UC but the academic environment is wonderful. UCR provides an education which encompasses relative skills for today's job market.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is not an issue when there are emergency phone booths at every corner. Students can be escorted back to their rooms or to classes if they just dial for the escort services at one of the many emergency booths.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The best part of the campus that every student must check out sometime during their time at UCR is the C. Behind the campus there is a large, yellow C up on a mountain. Students hike up to the C and kiss it, because it is said that if you kiss the C then you will get straight A's for the quarter. The C is a great spot to check out.
What to do for fun Down the street from the Campus is the University Village where students can go to restaurants, the movie theatre, nail salons, and much more. Also, the buses provided students with free transportation that can take them to the local malls. Students can join clubs, sororities, and fraternities on campus that put on events. Throughout the school year, there are concerts put on by the associated student body where big name performers come down and students can attend the concerts for free.
Food and Dining The dining halls always offer a variety of different food types for students and they try to cater to all ethnicities. The campus also has numerous dining options for students while they are on the actual campus. They can eat at numerous campus restaurants or chain restaurants such as Subway and Panda Express. The food is not over priced and students will never have to worry about going hungry.
Dorm Life UC Riverside offers three different dorming options for their students, Two of the dorming options are traditional college dorms while the third option is more modern, meaning that boys and girls are not mixed in one hall. The third option also gives students a closed bathroom setting where as the other two dorm options are community showers. Students get to meet many new people while living in the dorms and really get a feel of the college lifestyle.
Academic Rigor There is a lot of help offered for students to take advantage of. Students who keep up with their readings and don't fall behind will be fine. If you aren't afraid to ask for help, then you can do well academically. The classes definitely make you work hard, but it is all worth it in the end. Students end up learning a lot of material that they can use for future classes.
Tips for prospective students I would recommend joining a learning community, because you are put into a group with students that are at the same learning ability as you. It is good for commuters and students living the dorm life, because it is a great way to meet new people. Don't forget to stay focused and always keep your eyes on your goal.
In three sentences The University of California, Riverside is a very ethnically diverse campus where students not only learn about themselves, but about those around them as well.Students are pushed to their ability and offered help fron all of their professors. The campus allows for students to grow and become independent.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is fairly safe, however outside of campus it may be a little sketch. But we have campus escorts that walk us home from school if we requested it so it's okay. ALWAYS WALK IN A GROUP AFTER 11pm.
Greek Life Many students are part of the greek life, but also other things like Professional Fraternities or Community Service Fraternities. However, there are other students that are just in clubs. Greek life isn't everything for us because we are all so involved in other things too. Also, UCR doesn't have Greek Houses either.
Clubs and Activities Everyone is part of some sort or club or extracurricular. There are so many things to be involved in and opportunities to network, socialize and be a part of something you believe is important. Clubs & Activities are one of the most important things to the UCR student body. There are thousands of things to join, like culture clubs, community service, ASPB, Asian American Student Association, pretty much anything you want to be a part of, there is a club for that.
Great for these types of students Students who love hot weather! Also, students like the idea of a smaller close knit college feel.
What to do for fun There's not much to do if you don't have a car. Most students just go out to eat because Riverside has some great food places...EVERYWHERE. The city has a diverse selection of foods from American food, to Thai food, Indian food, Vietnamese food, etc and Asahi which is one of the most delicious All-You-Can-Eat restaurants around. May I add that these places are legit and not Americanized. Since it's really hot you can go swimming all the time. Some people hike the C which is a C on the top of a mountain. You can join clubs like Surf Club (they take you surfing) or outdoor excursions (they take you on countless trips). A lot of people also spend time at the gym playing intramurals.
Food and Dining Dining in the dorms was pretty much a hit and miss. Sometimes the food was great, sometimes it was meh. The best thing about dining was lunch at the Lothain Halls. Mmmmh, BBQ chicken for lunch. The foods on campus gets old after 2 years. There's a Panda Express, Habanero (which is a cheaper version of Chipotle), Stacks (cheaper version of Subway), Sushi, Pasta and the Chameleon (food truck on campus). UCR is building a Subway which I'm really excited about. We have a Coffee Bean and there's Latitude, where people go during their breaks to watch games or play pool/Foosball.
Dorm Life Dorm life is something you should experince for yourself. I can't say I didn't love it despite all the crazy things that happened. We we're like a family because you see these people pretty much 24/7. There are four different dorms. A&I was one of the oldest but the most fun, social and for some reason had the chillest and most down to earth people. Pentland was the newest but more secluded and quiet. People that lived there liked to keep more to themselves. It's the least social, however with the right people and can be one of the funnest. East Lothian was way never and nicer than West Lothian but that was where all the party people lived. It gets crazy at times, but it's not as fun as A&I. I lived in East Lothian and even though I loved it and met great people if I had to do it over, I would have chosen to live in A&I even if it was the oldest dorm.
Academic Rigor UCR has a bad rep for being a rejection school but the students here work really hard. Everyone is really smart and really care about their education. During finals week students stay 24 hours in the library to study. I see some students bring sleeping bags, pillows and toothbrushes! We take our education seriously. Not only that, but as a diverse student body, lots of the students here have interns, study abroad and do research hours. We are making the best of our education! Classes were fairly easy and enjojable. Upper Divs were challenging but with the help of your TA's and amount of time in office hours you'll do just fine. I mean, who doesn't live a challenge?
Tips for prospective students Be very involved! Join clubs, do extracurricular activities, go to school events, apply for internships, whatever you can handle. Your college experience is what you make it so try to be as involved as possible. You'll make lots of great friends, experience lots of interesting things and learn things you never knew about!
In three sentences Despite rumors and location of UCR it's actually a very great school full with wonderful students and staff. Our chancellor really cares for his students and our education because he's always seen walking around campus greeting students and asking how their days are going. The diverse student body is really nice; all my friends that have visited UCR has said that it's one of the friendliest campuses they've ever been too.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is an escort service that any student can call that will provide someone to escort them anywhere on or near campus. Campus police and security is very effective in maintaining peace throughout campus.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs and organizations and activities that students can be a part of. It is made available to all students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus UCR is famous for its bell tower located near the center of campus. Various events often take place here.
Bang for the buck Included in tuition is free access to the recreation center and free access to bus transportation for the RTA service. It is one of the cheapest UC's as well.
What to do for fun There is a recreation center available to all students in which one can work out, rock climb, or play various sports. There is also a place called Latitude 55 where students can go to play pool, video games, and observe various sporting events. There are a few school events that take place every now and then.
Food and Dining I did not eat much at UCR but from what I heard, the dining food isn't all that great. I did eat the food available to all students which included various restaurants. This food was pretty good but prices vary.
Dorm Life I did not personally dorm but I had many friends you did. I spent a good portion of my time hanging out with friends in their dorms and I was able to see the dorm life as an outsider and I see that it forces you to make friends. It is a good thing because when you start college you might not have all of your high school friends anymore so you must make new friends. Living in the dorms is an effective way of creating new friendships which in turn can lead to group study sessions.
Academic Rigor Some classes are easier than others and it will always be like that. Each professor is different but each and every one of them will provide you with the necessary resources to learn something. You will definitely get something out of every class.
Tips for prospective students I would advise prospective students to get involved quickly. Join a club or organization and you will be forced to become part of the college environment. It is easy to get off track and become lazy so stay focused in the college environment.
In three sentences UCR is, in my opinion, an underrated school. I am currently a sophomore studying Biological Sciences and I have learned so much in my first year at UCR. I was accepted to UCLA and I chose UCR over it for a very good reason and I do not regret my decision.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Like anywhere else, there are cases of crime. Riverside has a reputation for having a lot of criminal activity. It is a bloated fantasy for people who like to bring down the level of authenticity to the campus.
Greek Life The Greeks are always on campus promoting themselves for anyone who is interested. If you enjoy the fraternity/sorority life UCR has it all.
Clubs and Activities UC Riverside has over 300 clubs and organizations on campus. Whether you want to gather with like minded individuals to read books, play sports, or go larping, UC Riverside will have it. We also have quarterly campus wide concerts where we bring headlining artists to perform for the students (who get in for free).
Great for these types of students Everyone! UC Riverside has the most diverse student population in the state of California. Whether you are looking for a particular ethnic, religious, Greek, and specialty club. UC Riverside is bound to have it.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a giant C on top of a mountain that overlooks the campus. There is a tradition of hiking up to it. Everyone does it.
Bang for the buck UC Riverside was voted as one of the best bang for your buck schools in the state. Living expenses tend to be the bulk of attending college. Riverside has some of the best prices in on-campus and off-campus living.
What to do for fun We have a local movie theater that doubles as a lecture hall during the day. We get discounted tickets from a regular admission of $8.00. We are not far from Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and the beach. During the winter you can go snowboarding during the day and hit the beach at night.
Food and Dining They just built a Subway on campus. We already have a Panda Express and a Coffee Bean/Tea Leaf. The food is overall great. We have cuisines from all areas of the world. Off campus we have everything you can think of.
Dorm Life Dorm life is great. There are three dorm settings that each have different traits to themselves. It is a really great way to meet new people and start to kindle the friendships you will have the rest of your life.
Academic Rigor This is a UC. The level of education is the same as if you were going to UCLA or UC Berkeley. Expect to be held to the same expectations as you would anywhere else.
Tips for prospective students Do not let the namesake and reputation of UCR fool you, this is a top notch school that will demand you meet the expectations of any UC level education. The people here are great to work with. Be nice to everybody. The people you meet here could very well be the people you work with somewhere down the line.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck If you take advantage of all the things UCR offers then yes. Otherwise you're paying 14 grand a year (or more if you're dorming) for an education you could have gotten for 5 grand at a Cal State.
What to do for fun Go to the events! Especially Heat, we have a ton of awesome bands come in and play for us (and it's free!!!).
Food and Dining Panda Express and Fiamma are now your best friends. The food isn't super expensive for college food (about $5-8 per plate depending on what you get). And the UV (University Village located really close to campus) has a bunch of restaurants and fast food places that sell good but cheap food. Del Taco, Dennys, Carl's Jr., and Subway are all there to name a few of my favorite haunts. And Ten Ren's Tea Time sells pretty tasty boba!
Dorm Life Never did it myself but I've heard mixed reviews from my friends.
Academic Rigor Depending on the teacher, you could be in for a ton of studying. Other teachers are more reasonable or downright easy :)
Tips for prospective students Always check who your professor is before enrolling in a class. The unfortunate part about this school being a research university is that sometimes the teachers aren't really good at communicating their subject to their students. Also make sure you check everything well in advance because it takes about a week or so for administration to process anything. Finally, take advantage of the gym! You pay for it with your student fees every quarter so you might as well enjoy the benefits.
In three sentences UCR is honestly an amazing school. It provides help to all students that want to attend and the campus is really diverse (and we're proud of it!). It's a school where you can go have fun but at the same time focus on getting your degree and making connections.

Greek Life Many fraternities and sororities are present for students to join. All of them are prestigious and add to the college experience.
Clubs and Activities For the ultimate college experience, meeting people and being involved are prime. Clubs: service, political, cultural, religious, recreational, athletic, and student government.
Great for these types of students All types of students will enjoy this school due to the diversity and openness.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Behind the campus, is a big yellow C on the mountain. Students hike up to it for a challenge and traditional experience. Rumor has it that if one hikes the C, then that quarter they will receive straight A's!
Bang for the buck Everything at the school is there and available for the students, but it is up to the students to acknowledge. The campus is growing and it grows onto the students.
What to do for fun Students may attend the programs arranged by the Arts. Or attend the fall, winter, spring concerts arranged by the student body. Athletics are present and could be participated in or attended. All major places in Southerna California are less than 60 miles away.
Food and Dining Variety of options available to give a sense of community and overall good dining experience.
Dorm Life All dorms provide the same experience (some with more luxuries than the others). There are great leaders and social options for students to embark upon. The rooms are there, the bathrooms are there, the study lounges are there, and the recreation is there. The student must make the most of their experience.
Academic Rigor Any class at any university is hard and requires dedication for success. The staff is very helpful for students to attain their goals and the libraries have a variety of resources. Some classes may be easier than others because of the subject, but it all depends on the student and their perception.
Tips for prospective students UCR has departments with quality just like large universities and the intimacy of a small school. It is right in the middle of the Southern California experience.
In three sentences This school is a growing school that is culturally rich with a solid foundation for education. The academics and facilities are very resourceful in addition to many opportunities for students to be involved. Though underrated, the school's hidden beauty and strengths sprout onto the students.

Clubs and Activities We have good sororities, and even better community service.
Great for these types of students Students who want to make good friends, be well-rounded, and enjoy friendship should definitely go here.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Something we UCR students like to do is hike to the C that's on the top of the hill and kiss it before finals for good luck.
What to do for fun Eat, hike, and go bowling. But one that tops all these is the Drive-in theatre. It's one of the few that exists today.
Food and Dining It's not the best, but it's comfortable.
Dorm Life One begins to grow and make mistakes from dorm life. Choose your friends wisely and experience some pain to better yourselves.
Academic Rigor Business, Science, and Psychology are the majors we are known for and if one isn't in one of these majors, it can be quite a breeze.
Tips for prospective students Be open minded and shape yourselves well. Always try and better yourselves as a person.
In three sentences It is neither the brightest nor the biggest school, but it is comfortable and accepting. No other school will post up google docs to help others study as much as UCR does. It's a school that accepts people for the areas they lack in, and assists wherever and whenever.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UCR has its own police station! There are also the UCR Campus Escorts and the UCR safety polls. UCR also has a constant email feed which tells us exactly when incidents occur on or outside of campus.
Great for these types of students UCR is a great school for students that want to discover more about themselves and find out the true meaning of appearances are deceiving. UCR is a great school for those who want more than what they bargained for.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During the end of the year, the senior class vandalizes the C on Mt. Rubidoux.
Bang for the buck You get what you pay for, great professors who are known in the academic world and are leading experts in their fields, classes that are up-to-date and interesting and great facilities.
What to do for fun There is always more than one thing to do at UCR. The botanical gardens are great for a quiet but fun place. Downtown Riverside has a great outdoor mall and sometimes has free concerts. Back to the Grind, Riverside's own indie coffee shop has open mikes and burlesque classes. UCR, for the adventurous type, can also be turned into a great bicycle course.
Food and Dining UCR food is amazing everything is fresh and you always have a variety of options. The city itself is also surrounded by great restaurants that help feed your cravings.
Dorm Life Dorm life is complicated but fun. Whether you choose to be in a hall program or not, you will meet people who are interesting, intelligent, and fun. But, the people around you will be full of diverse experiences and different view points that at times, clash in an interesting but beneficial way.
Academic Rigor The classes are challenging; no doubt about it but, you will be surrounded by many caring professors who will help you and the courses are interesting enough to offset rigor.
Tips for prospective students Enter the first year programs as it is a great way to make friends, get breadth requirements out of the way, and the program also helps give you important tips to get you accustomed to UCR and your future.
In three sentences UCR is a great school that encompasses a huge variety of people. You will never find greater diversity than in UCR! This school is also small and new-student friendly.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus itself is safe. The UCPD (police for UC campuses) is on the edge of campus and there are escorts during most of the week to walk you to your car and such up to 2am. The police do patrol the area during random times.
Great for these types of students For those who like studying, there are two main libraries and each is three floors plus a basement. The 1st floor is kinda noise, ideal for group studying (there are also study rooms upstairs, both reserved and open). As you go up the floors, the quieter it becomes. During the school year, I find myself spending most of my day outside of class in the library. There is also another building for academic resource and tutoring which is a must for all students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus UCR has the largest C (letter C) in the states. It is painted on the side of a hill. It can be seen from quite a long way. It is tradition to hick up to it before you graduate. Also, there is a bell tower at the center of campus and it is also tradition to ride the elevator to the top before you graduate.
What to do for fun The thing about Riverside is that there isn't too much to do in Riverside. Most of the enjoyable stuff (malls, the beach etc.) is a drive away. The campus is a bit dull at first glance. However, there is plenty to do if you make the right friends and utilize your resources. The campus itself is safe, so jobs and biking around it is great. Basketball is huge at Riverside, so the gym has plenty of courts (at times, they are all filled).
Food and Dining I have eaten at the dorms and dining areas. I would say that most of the time, the food is average or below average. Sometimes, the food is really good. But, most of the time that I went, the food was not that great.
Dorm Life I do not dorm, but I do have friend who dorm. They give me a mix reaction. For some, the dorms are too loud or their roommate sucks. Others say that the dorms are fun and enjoyable with people who respect each other and way of life.
Academic Rigor It really depends on your background in your previous school. If your teacher was good, most likely you will do good in the class. The professors do go at a fast steady pace and will learn people behind if they do not catch up. The curve for an A is usually in the latter part of the grades (70-80% or higher). Other classes have pre-set curves where the cut off for an A, B, C etc. is already defined. The department of the class determines the curve and grade distribution.
Tips for prospective students I suggest reading journals and articles in your field of interest and try to get a head start in the subject matter. It rains during the winter and is quite hot in the summer. Make friends with the right people and learn the value of asking for help.
In three sentences UCR is a competitive school with many experienced professors. The people and students are very friendly and respect everyone. The professors do encourage undergraduates to come to their office hours and potential research opportunities in various focuses.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There is a intramural sports league of basketball, flag football, soccer, etc. where you compete for fun with other students. Also, there is the recreation center which has a gym, basketball courts, tennis, track, etc. You can also have a hike up to the C located in the mountains which is visible from campus.
Food and Dining Food and dining is really good but after awhile you get tired of the food which should happen because the food they serve will be repeated about a week later. They have Mexican food, Asian, American, etc. They also serve fruits everyday, salad bar and soups.
Dorm Life The dorm life experience is up to you to create. There are some halls who have their own clicks and some who are just social to everyone, but it is up to you to have your own experience.
Academic Rigor If you don't try or study at all, you will get a bad grade. There are some classes which are really hard because it is all based on test and some teachers are the types who force you self learn because they only explain a brief explanation of a topic.
Tips for prospective students Have fun because you only go to college once. You will meet a lot of different people and study but don't become a study bug and never go out to experience new things.
In three sentences Very diverse school and you create your own college experience. Huge schools events are the craziest. Has nice weather everyday and food is always nearby campus.

Categories Comments Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Climbing the C on the mountain-they'll brag about how ours is the biggest, highest, and between Berkley on a mountain. The quarter concerts are fun with Heat being the best.
Bang for the buck Compared to other UCs, it's priced better. Off-campus housing is a lot cheaper and will save money. Avoid the campus book store if you can, always look online first and ask older students for their books. The Barn gives good deals during its happy hours on Fridays.
What to do for fun The Rec Center is great and newly remodeled. It features basketball courts(indoor and outdoor), fields, several racket sports, and large separated weight and cardio areas.
Food and Dining Dorm food gets boring after a quarter, but they do different styles every now and then. Logos, the sub shop at Lothian is always a great place. On campus restaurants are great and include: Panda Express, La Fiamma, and soon Subway. If you search around you'll definitely find good places to eat.
Dorm Life Pentland will be easiest to study and find a quiet space to study. Lothian and A&I are your typical communal dorms, although everyone considers the West Lothian part a dump while East Lothian is more popular. Seems like more of a commuter population depending on your dorm mates as it empties out on weekends.
Academic Rigor Generally depends on what classes you take and how prepared you are from high school. A sure way to succeed would be to engage in discussions, stay on top of everything, and definitely go to OFFICE HOURS.
Tips for prospective students Quarter system for any college will be challenging at first as it's fast paced and tests come up every other week with all your classes. Prepare for the hot days as it is in the inland area.
In three sentences Great university where you can explore new cultures and meet different people. Particularly strong in psychology, entomology, and engineering. Being a research university, it is great for anyone wanting to pursue research.

Greek Life There are many to choose from and most of these groups are not only focused on social gatherings but also with community service and betterment of the community.
Clubs and Activities There are multiple clubs and organizations to choose from.
Great for these types of students Great for students who would like to dedicate their time to research and innovation.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Tartan Soul. This school is crazy about Tartan Soul. It is comprised basically with these four core values: Respect, Excellence, Accountability, and Integrity.
What to do for fun Within the campus, there are a lot of clubs and organizations students can join. They can also play sports in the field and courts and UCR even has rock climbing! Around the mountainous Riverside area, students can visit the many paths and trails for their hiking pleasures. Also outside the campus is University Village where it not only consist of food and dining but as well as entertainment such as the cinema where student can take a break from studying all day.
Food and Dining The food here was definitely better than high school food. UCR has various foods to choose from. They have restaurants and quality chefs in resident halls where it is buffet-style and as well as the infamous hub where there are more renown food vendors such as Panda Express and Chipotle. That's not all! Just outside the campus lies University Village with much more food and dining to offer.
Dorm Life During the two orientations I attended I stayed at two contrasting halls. The first hall I stayed at was nice but a bit small. I was not a fan of the restroom but it was quite spacious. The hall also had a restaurant so that was convenient. The other hall I stayed at was a lot nicer and more spacious and more appealing. The restrooms may be a little bit smaller but they were a lot nicer than the other hall. It really depends which residence halls a student chooses. There are nice ones and there are not so nice ones.
Academic Rigor I have not yet attended a class; however in the time I was there for Honors Program we had lots of critical and analytical discussions. The professors I had the opportunity to meet and hear were very intellectual and seemed like they were going to be a challenge in the coming quarter.
Tips for prospective students Make the most of your college experience. What you put in is what you will reap. Try to meet as many people as you can for these will be the people you will work with in the course of your stay at the college. Talk to your professors for they will help you out and will make your class more bearable. Simply enjoy, for most people, college is once in a lifetime.

Food and Dining It's not home food but they sure put a lot of effort into making the food here pretty good! It sucks that you have to choose between two dining halls but at least they have several different choices!
Dorm Life Dorming was great! I loved my roommates! The beds may be a little small and uncomfortable, putting another comforter under it makes it pretty comfortable.
Academic Rigor The professors here are great really knowledgeable and understanding. So far the professors I have had have been able to teach at a pace that everyone can follow and most professors put a great deal of efforts to make their students understand as much as possible.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is relatively safe, and the campus police are diligent and helpful in the case of any problems. Be sure to keep your personal items personal, and you won't have any problems!
Greek Life Greek life here is amazing. There are over 65 frats & sororities, so everyone can find the one for them. There are no greek houses here, but that doesn't mean you can't party it up with your brothers or sisters whenever you want!
Clubs and Activities There are SO many clubs here! I'm sure there's a club for everyone, including a surf club (even though we're not too close to the ocean?). Groups for honors students, baseball lovers, cat caretakers, and many others can be found here. There's a fair every year, so keep your eyes open for that so you can get involved!
Great for these types of students UCR is great for students interested in research, Greek life, dorming, and medical development. Every major on campus has its merits, and even though some classes are large, discussions break the classes down and and let the students interact in a smaller setting.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The HUB is the center of campus, and has many rooms and stories to lounge in with friends. There's also some great restaurants on campus, mine being Latitude 55. Be careful, though, because I didn't know it even existed until my 3rd quarter here! Also, Coffee Bean is a hot spot, as well as the Belltower, which is the place for activist shows and music in the midday.
Bang for the buck All colleges are really expensive right now, but UCR really has it all. We're up and coming in the medical field, and we have more opportunities for research than most schools. It's never too hard to get classes, and there's always something to do.
What to do for fun Find a friend with a car, and life will never be dull. There are so many things to do around town if you know where to look. Also, the university holds a bunch of events every year, including Spring Splash & Block Party, two of the coolest concerts you'll ever see! Tickets are free for students, so grab your tickets early & enjoy.
Food and Dining Dorm food isn't always the most healthy, so try to limit your consumption to a few times a week. But going to the dining halls is fun especially in a big group, so do the dorm dinner once a week!
Dorm Life Dorm life here is amazing. I wouldn't trade that year of my life for anything! Be friendly, clean, and courteous, and you'll have an amazing time. Go to the planned events! Even if they're no fun, the people around you make every situation hilarious and totally worth it. Partying with friends is so much fun, but please stay responsible!
Academic Rigor Depending on your major, some classes are ridiculously easy, and others are insanely difficult. But every class is doable, so keep your effort up, and you'll go far. If you keep your mind on some goal, like getting into a top 10 Master's program or graduating with honors, you'll see college as one big picture, and with every success, the picture becomes a little more clear.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to go to every lecture, even if it's at 8am; You won't regret it. Make sure you have your priorities set on school first, and you'll be fine. Office hours & TA's are your new best friends, so utilize them. Seize every opportunity & never back down.
In three sentences UCR is an amazing school with ample opportunities for personal development, academic achievement, and networking. Food and Dining The food on campus is a bit expensive, but there are places nearby that within walking distance. It's best to bring food so you won't have to spend so much money throughout the year.
Dorm Life I've never lived in the dorms, but I hear it's a good experience for first-years. It's an easy way to make friends and live on your own without truly being alone. I hear the food is pretty expensive, but it is included with price to live in dorms.
Academic Rigor The professors I've had have all been very helpful and willing to give their time if you need help. It's college, so it's really all about how much the student is willing to put into it. It's a quarter system so it is a very fast past schedule, but if you manage your time well, you should be fine.
Tips for prospective students Don't just come to the campus to go to class. There are a lot of programs that are free and open to everyone. Even if you just visit the centers to meet people and hang out, it's better than nothing. It's really important to be involved and get the most out of the education you're paying for along with the programs provided by the school.
In three sentences This is a great school for commuters because everything is within driving distance including great places to have fun and relax. The campus itself is well kept and I've enjoyed the professors I've met. There are clubs and centers that cater to different communities on campus and if they don't exist, students can always create their own.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Within the campus itself, it is pretty safe. There are campus escorts to walk with you at night if you're scared. Surrounding the campus is dangerous. It's in Riverside, come on. We get at least one email a week about some robbery on the streets. Just avoid walking on Blaine, Chicago, and Iowa at night. As a matter of fact, just avoid walking around at night, unless you're with at least 5 people.
Greek Life I'm not a part of the Greek life, but my friends that are in it, loves it. I can't speak for this though.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of clubs, I believe there are over 300 clubs on campus. Anything you think of, they have. If they don't, you can easily start one. ASPB always plans things for the students to do.
Great for these types of students As long as you're able to keep an open mind, then you'll fit in perfectly in UCR. UCR is EXTREMELY diverse in every aspect.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's a legend that if you hike up to the C at Box Springs Mountain and you kiss the C, you will get a 4.0 that year. I haven't tried it, but one friend of mine did that and got a 4.0. But then again, she was an extremely hard worker.
Bang for the buck UCR isn't as expensive as the other UC's I guess, but it is still sort of expensive. What's great about being a first year is that you get dining dollars to spend at the convenient stores and restaurants on campus.
What to do for fun There is a University Village within a 20 minute walk. There's a theater that is used as a classroom in the mornings/evenings. There's also a lot of restaurants there. Other than that, there's not much to do. I mentioned before, get yourself involved. It's all about getting yourself out there. Not only are you building experience, but you're also keeping yourself occupied and making new friends!
Food and Dining Let's just say, you'll love it fall quarter, but you'll get tired of it by winter quarter and you'll hate it by spring quarter. But it's convenient and ayce so I can't complain too much.
Dorm Life I LOVE DORM LIFE. I was lucky to be placed in the closest hall in East Lothian. Almost everyone knew our hall as the close hall. I love the way East Lothian is structured because you get to see everyone and it's so much easier to make new friends that way, as opposed to West Lothian, Pentland, and A&I, where they are sort of kept off to themselves. Dorm life is the best.
Academic Rigor I'm a CHASS major and classes are sort of easy. But that's because all the professors and TAs that I've had really showed that they cared a lot and did would do anything to help us pass the course. From what I've seen, CNAS students are the ones that have it harder, but they don't regret any of it.
Tips for prospective students Don't listen to what others say about how UCR is a lower tier school. UCR is an up and coming school and before you are quick to judge, allow yourself to experience UCR first. I personally had low expectations for UCR before coming in, but after a year, I learned so much of what UCR has to offer, will offer, and have offered. Just make sure you get involved, or else you'll find yourself bored.
In three sentences UCR is a relatively small campus and sometimes you might see the same people when you walk to class. I tend to find that UCR has a very friendly diverse attitude all throughout campus, everyone's nice to each other. If you get yourself involved, then you'll love it here at UCR, I know I do.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The escort service at night-time is so great! The campus feels relatively safe especially during the day. At night, I wouldn't walk around alone outside the campus though.
Great for these types of students Studious, outgoing, fun.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The on-campus music festival Heat is a lot of fun!! Don't miss it!!
Bang for the buck The price of tuition and other costs is so high, but the staff and professors want the students to finish school in four years and have lots of office hours.
What to do for fun Climb up to the C! Go see the botanical gardens.
Food and Dining As a vegetarian, I was very happy that they offered so many alternatives and meat-free food. The on-campus Coffee Bean is a plus!
Dorm Life Luckily for me, my hall was incredible! We all got along and we had the BEST resident adviser! Get to know as many people as you can, because it is an awesome experience. The bathrooms here are very clean and the rooms have nice furniture.
Academic Rigor Some classes can be tough, but the professors and TA's are always willing to help.
Tips for prospective students Riverside can get dangerously hot, so beware what you wear and having sunscreen with you!
In three sentences UCR is a great, diverse campus that offers lots of cool opportunities. There are many clubs are fraternities/sororities available that are focused on different things like socializing, volunteering, or academia. The lecture halls are equipped with state-of-the-art computers and projectors.

Tips for prospective students Follow all of the deadlines and check your university E-mail frequently.
In three sentences I haven't yet begun taking classes at this University but just in orientation I was given a great impression. The students here seem to be really helpful and a very diverse and understanding student body. The faculty has also shown a very strong interest in seeing all of us graduate with excellent grades and a degree for success.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus for the most part is safe. A few incidents happen here and there, but nothing too profound. If something does go on it's more prone to happen at night. If you are ever cautious about something happening to you, and have night classes, or long distances to walk to at night then campus escorts are usually always available to escort you where you need to go.
Greek Life I'm not too big on Greek Life since i'm not in it, but they definitely seem to have their own fun. Many fraternities and sororities sit outside on couches on grassy lawns of the campus, doing what Greeks do. From their parties to seeking recruiters, they garner attention from eager freshman longing to join. They don't run the campus at all, they're just to there for those who seek to impact their college experience through pledging. If that's your thing, then make sure it's a decision you absolutely want to make before going through with it.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs to get into, ranging from tae kwon do clubs, and origami clubs, to intramural rugby, or working for the college newspaper. The campus itself is filled with plenty to do if you're willing to go out of your comfort zone, and take advantage of it all. From programs put on by residence halls such as parties, talent shows, open mics, and just learning about how to survive in college, to quarterly music concerts sponsored by the school, there's always something to do for each and every individual. There's also a gaming lab that you can go to to satisfy your PC gaming needs, and a restaurant called Latitude 55 which shows all the latest sports games, has air hockey, pool, video games, and most importantly great food!
Great for these types of students UC Riverside is great for students who are open minded, intellectual, and enjoy being around a diverse group of students. Being that the school is so diverse, it's a great fit for a student who are just as diverse and open in their way of thinking as the campus is. You definitely should be tolerable of pretty hot, sunny weather, that is the Inland Empire. It's not really for lovers of the snow, being that snow never really touches Riverside. It's not for the typical part goer, as the school isn't a party school but it's well rounded in the fact that its students know when to have fun, and when to get their study on for finals week. It's also on a quarter system, so the school year seems to move at a much rapid pace, than the semester system. But as long as you can get used to that, you should be fine.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There's not too many unusual traditions I know of besides the school priding itself of its Scottish heritage through an occasional bagpipe practice every now and then, that can be heard from the residence halls. Our concerts held every school quarter have been traditions for many years, welcoming notable artists such as J.Cole, Lupe Fiasco, Nas, Mac Miller, Karmin, The Roots, Common, Kendrick Lamar, Chiddy Bang, Dev & The Cataracs, and more who have blessed UCR with their presence at some point in time. Being that our Botanical Garden is apart of the UCR campus, its not too unusual of a place, but definitely one that's uniquely beautiful.
Bang for the buck When going to UCR, it's definitely what you make of it, as I would believe any college experience is. If you choose not too venture out and seek fun while getting your education, then don't expect it to necessarily seek you out either. But if you do, then your in for a grand experience. It's definitely a diamond in the rough when it comes to a beautiful campus, surrounded by a desert of a town. Those who are narrow minded may choose to misjudge this school at a first glance just because of it being less prestigious than most UC's, but I honestly love it. A UC is a UC regardless, as the whole system is prestigious, and college is still college, regardless of others opinions. You may just come to find yourself as a perfect fit nowhere else but here!
What to do for fun The city of Riverside itself isn't as filled with as many activities, but if you search around hard enough you can find stuff to do, like going to its Sweeney art gallery, exploring downtown and Riverside plaza, the museum of photography, or the Botanical gardens which is not too far from the campus. Just try your best to avoid the heat! You're about a hour away from the beach if you need to cool off in the water. The University Village is close by if you want to catch a movie, or if you're yearning for non college campus food. Amusement parks like Disney Land, and Knotts Berry Farm are only a nice drive away.
Food and Dining The food in the dining hall for the most part is good. It has its days, sometimes a little too often, but it's pallatable. The fact that I've gained my freshman 15 since first year comes to show that the never ending servings of waffles and eggs for breakfast, and pasta for lunch and dinner can become too much of a good thing. Outside of the dining halls, is a place called the HUB has Panda Express, an Italian Restaurant, Chipotle style restaurant, and Sushi restaurant, as these are other eateries to go to when tired of dining hall food, along with convenience stores similar to 7-11's are located around the campus.
Dorm Life Dorm Life is what you make of it. Living in the dorms for me helped me to better enjoy my college experience at UCR, and was where I met most of my new friends. My roommate and I got along well, along with my hall mates who were definitely great friends too. I lived in a themed hall, called PATH (Pan African Themed Hall) which was largely composed of African American students, as well as students of other ethnicity's. A close bond was created between all of those living in the building, as well as us all learning to embrace African American culture through its decorative Afrocentric themes, and discussing concerns within the African American community. This is one of many themed residence halls including a Hispanic heritage hall, LGBT hall, and one for Science majors. Overall, you can't fully enjoy your college experience unless you're living there on campus, and getting the experience of living away from home. It's apart of your new found freedom as a college student!
Academic Rigor Being that the school is a UC, the academics definitely require you to put in the required effort for every class you take. It's not overwhelming, but hey it's college, you should expect to put in hard work. The level of work in each class varies, but 9 times out 10 you'll find yourself reading a lot, typing essays, studying in the library, or occasionally cramming.
Tips for prospective students Find out as much as you can about the school you're attending. Seek great advice from upperclassmen so you'll know what to expect when the new school year approaches. Be prepared to grow mentally, academically, and personally from your college experience, and keep an open mind. Don't be afraid to try new things, meet new people, and go outside of your comfort zone.
In three sentences UC Riverside is a school composed of economically diverse students, striving for a better education, and promising future. Being the most diverse UC it's student body ranges in a variety of ethnicity's and cultures, and young people making and impact on the world of today. As the campus continues to rapidly grow with students, so does the amount of empowering minds that graduate from such a prestigious university.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I'll be brief as everybody has their own niches of serotonin release and adrenaline stimulants. There's a little mini-party for the exclusive members every Thursday night at a local restaurant/patio.
Food and Dining If your palette's looking for a kick, then come check out this University's multiple cafeterias.
Dorm Life The dorm life isn't as satisfactory as I thought it would be, but that depends more so on the roommates you're given than the welfare of the University's roommate placing algorithm, the dorm's physical state, and the location of the dorm.
Academic Rigor Difficulty matched with a conducive atmosphere results in easy intake of lessons.
Tips for prospective students 1) Aim to abate most wantonly negative habits, such as frivolous activities outside the desired academic study. 2) If ever stress occurs, don't feel pressured to trudge on as if your life depended on it. Learn to relax. The brain doesn't work as well if it's on constant overdrive. 3) Don't be afraid to explore every avenue you find interesting as college should be the defining stage in one's life to understand the world around him/her and try to find a symbiosis with it.
In three sentences What matters most to the staff of this university isn't the ardent passion that students have for the higher education, though that is arguably the the prime motivation to recruit students in any university, but the relationship built with the students among the staff and among their own peers. Perhaps too much underrated, this university has accommodated for the diversity of students with their over-branching leniency towards ethnic, socioeconomic, and creed-based differences. It only seems appropriate, given my experienced with this university, that a high rating comes at the only natural response.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is really safe. There are only a few incidents when someone gets robbed at night, but you should know never to walk by yourself at night, walk with three or more people. Also the campus has an escort system you can call and they will have a volunteer escort you any location you want to go.
What to do for fun There is a theatre and some restaurants around UCR that is within walking distance, but other than that there is really nothing to do unless you drive. UCR is within an hour away from beaches, malls, Knott's, and a whole lot of stores and restaurants.
Food and Dining Fattening lol...... The food wasn't too bad; you would really miss a home cook meal though. Some days are good at the dining halls and some days aren't, so check the menu frequently so that you could avoid using your meal swipes for something you don't want. Also at the dining halls, it is all you can eat,so beware the freshman fifteen awaits you. But if you do not have taste for the dining hall food, UCR has fast food restaurants at the hub and also a food truck on campus.
Dorm Life I really liked dorming even though oit cost me an arm and a leg to stay at Pentland Hills. You really learn to find yourself when you dorm because you are around people you do not know but have to learn to live with. Also you are able to choose to live in a special interest community with people with similar interests as you so that your bonding could be easier like the Pan-African Theme Hall, el Mundo, CNAS Hall, Honors Hall, and more.
Academic Rigor Every class at UCR is fast-paced because a lot of material is covered during the ten week quarter system, so make sure you do not fall behind. Majority of your grade is calculated by your midterm and final scores, so studying and learning how to retain information is really important.
Tips for prospective students Never ever ever ever procrastinate; it is really easy to spend too much time developing your social life.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Don't walk around by yourself. People like to steal from students walking around by themselves in the evening. I've never had anything happen though. Also, have a metal bike lock.
Greek Life We have a nice sized greek life. Not big enough to get a greek row, but we manage just fine. There are a lot of houses for the greeks.
Clubs and Activities There are so many different clubs I don't even know a lot of them. You'll find something for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus At the top of the mountain by the school is our campus C. It's tradition to hike up there for good luck and bond with friends.
Bang for the buck The UC system is getting out of hand. It's not as bad as the private schools, but community colleges are still way cheaper.
What to do for fun Of course there are lots of parties and the school puts on a lot of events that are actually very nice. Many famous people come to our school to perform. Three huge concerts a year.
Food and Dining The food selection in the dorms is great. On campus could use some more options but there is enough variety to satisfy all your cravings.
Dorm Life Dorming your first year is one of the best experiences and best ways to meet new people. There are also communities in the dorms dedicated to different areas of study or ethnicity.
Academic Rigor Things are just like any other university. Don't expect to be babied.
Tips for prospective students Make use of your academic counselors and other campus resources.

Food and Dining Dorm food sucks and campus food wasn't great. I heard they add more places since I've been there back in 07'
Dorm Life Lothian resident, Nicer than A-I, Pentland Hill is really nice but expensive. People at AI are more down to earth at least when I went there. Lothian people tend to be a bit clicky. Still both are expensive because of meal plan. May find a better deal off campus.
Academic Rigor Science degree are harder and tend to be taught by Professors from out of the country, thus hard to understand. Business was A LOT easier. Professors may still be out of country so use ratemyprofessor.com before you pick your classes!
Tips for prospective students Study hard to get high GPA. Office Hours, Ask questions, Intern sophomore, junior, or senior year in related field. Job Fairs. Network, Volunteer, Take leadership roles in class. Stay away from partying too much. Have a social life but with in reason. Study, Study, Study and you will get a great career.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus is relatively safe for where it is situated. Like almost all colleges there are emergency stations where you can immediately call for help, though it is not recommended that you stay in the same spot. In addition to that, there is an escort service where you can call someone to escort you around campus if you do not feel safe. They even escort during the night! My friend is a part of the escort service and he does a great job.
Greek Life I haven't explored much of the Greek Life, but according to my friend, it's quite an experience. It is something you really need to try out during the Rush. This is one of those things where it is you, or it is not so make sure it's what you really want.
Clubs and Activities The clubs are great, i've associated myself with quite the many at the beginning of the year, but it eventually whittled down to one. I've become an officer in the club and there are many things that go on from community service, to social events on campus!
Great for these types of students All types, I don't know what type of student won't have fun here. Even if you're not the social type it's hard to NOT fit in, imagine that!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus 2011-2012 school year we burned UC Irvine's mascot, the Anteater. That was really amusing and a great experience. We had fireworks shoot out from the buildings' rooftops to give a spectacular show.
What to do for fun There are many events going on around the campus year long. You will only have as much fun as you so choose to partake in them. Join a club, join a frat, go to the gym at the Rec Center, there are many things to do on campus. Grabbing some coffee with a date at Coffee Bean is nice too!
Food and Dining The food is mediocre, it can be better. They are good some times but that is giving it a bit too much credit.
Dorm Life Oh man, it is great. The perks about living on campus in the dorms your first year or two is getting to know a lot of people. You are thrown in to the social aspect of college immediately and the structure of the dorms allow it to happen. The school did a great job in building dorms where interactions is inevitable.
Academic Rigor In reality the academics will be as rigorous as you want it to be or how you consequent yourself from a lack of. Be smart about the courses you choose, know how much you can handle. Sun Tzu wrote in his Art of War, If you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles... This can be applied to your work ethic as well.
Tips for prospective students Be smart about the time you use during your first year in college. It is extremely important and I stress its importance. I speak to you as a fellow student, the first year can really bring your GPA to the highest of your four years and help you maintain that average. Remember though, balance out your general ed courses with upper division courses to curb the stress.
In three sentences The campus provides a calm, almost serene environment for social interactions and academic studies. Students are seen every day studying outside, be it on the grass, the Bell tower, or the chairs provided by the school itself. The school has done a great job in creating the perfect environment for students to explore the campus socially and academically.

Clubs and Activities SOOOO MANY!
Bang for the buck UCR is super affordable, also it gives a lot of money to attract students when competing with other UCs.
Food and Dining Most days the food is good, but it is crowded sometimes as well. It isn't all teched like some other schools, but it suffices.
Dorm Life I live in pentland and i love it! Dorm life is what you make of it, if you stay cooped up of course it will be bad, so go out and make friends. There is always something fun going on. There is a kitchen for pentland and it is really handy.
Academic Rigor It depends on what classes you take, if you take harder classes it is more rigorous. There are still easy classes and hard classes, but rigor is what you make of it, if you don't study it might seems hard...but it is only because you didn't work for it.
Tips for prospective students Don't shy away because of rankings...it is just undergrad and UCR has a great learning environment. UCR tends to give a lot of financial aid so that's GOOD!
In three sentences UCR students are always proud of their school despite its various rankings. The teachers are extremely helpful and counselors are mentors and treat everyone with respect. UCR cares about my education personally, and that is important.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I think the campus as well as the community immediately surrounded the campus is pretty safe compared to others. However if you leave the two mile radius around the school, the neighborhoods get worse and you do have more precaution when walking around.
Clubs and Activities There are a lot of different clubs on campus. The large variety gives students a chance to experience new things as well as get into a club that they might be interested in.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are three music festivals each year on campus. They have one for each quarter and for the most part they're really fun. Sometimes the school really surprises you and gets really good artists.
What to do for fun Well if you're really into nature, there are a lot of places to go hiking. There's also a movie theater near by as well as a bunch of restaurants. Other than that there's not much to do at Riverside.
Food and Dining The food is actually pretty good here and you have a variety to choose from.
Dorm Life I lived in the Aberdeen-Inverness dorms and well II didn't think it was all that great. The rooms are really small and sometimes they stick three people in one tiny room. Although I liked dorming, I didn't like the lack of space in these rooms because I had to share one room with three people. The room was too small for three people. I think that if you're going to dorm here, it would be better to go to Lothian or Pentland.
Academic Rigor Sometimes you get teachers that really know what they're talking about and are really enthusiastic about what they do. It makes the class much more enjoyable to be in. However, you can also get teachers that have really strong accents and you don't understand a word they're saying.
Tips for prospective students I suggest you get a bike when you come here because it really does come in handy, especially when you're late to class. Also bring a variety of different clothing because the summers are incredibly hot and it rains a lot in the winter.
In three sentences The campus itself is very nice and it provides a good environment for the students. Although the weather here is crazy since it is in the middle of the desert. Overall, I really like studying at UC Riverside.

Categories Comments What to do for fun I went to check out the little plaza by the university village, looks like a nice hang out spot with many places to eat and a movie theater.
Food and Dining I like the food and restaurants they have. I would love for them to have a Starbucks instead of a Coffee Bean.
Dorm Life I absolutely love my new apartment, though I havent yet met my roommates or stayed over the night. Glen Mor apartments has all that you need to feel at home.
Academic Rigor So far my academic counselors have been very helpful. Excited to start school soon.
Tips for prospective students Call the offices and ask as many questions as you want. Dont be afraid of asking for help, the people who work here are very nice and would love to help you with whatever you need.
In three sentences The people here have been absolutely helpful to transfer students like me. I love my new on campus apartment. I like how everything is organized for students in order for them to finish their degree.

Categories Comments What to do for fun UCR is located in the inland empire so it is not too far away from many hot spots in California. If you have the luxury of owning your own vehicle LA, Disneyland and the beach are about 45 min away. Around the area their are also major shopping malls that one can go to such as Ontario Mills, Victorian Gardens, Tyler Galleria and the the Inland Empire center. On campus their are multiple clubs and departments that throw events so if you are involved their isn't really to many dull moments.
Food and Dining The dinning halls are great at first because you do not have to worry about when to make your meals. After a while they become boring and repetitive. Sometimes the menus make you want to skip out on a meal, therefore it is great that a dinning plan also has the options to eat at some of the local restaurants on campus.
Dorm Life For incoming freshman dorm life is amazing. You get to meet new people, attend many socializing event and really form a community with the people you live with. Not all the residence halls are great in appearance but they do meet the financial needs of students.
Academic Rigor Just because UCR does not have the academic prestige that other UC campuses have does not make it any easier when it comes to academics. Any major can tell you that you will have to work hard if you want to achieve a GPA higher than a 3.5. UCR is a university so expect university level work.
Tips for prospective students Incoming students should not be afraid to break out of their shells and try new things on campus. Their are multiple opportunities to get involved and meet new people everyday. Make sure to take advantage of all the research opportunities UCR has to offer for undergrads.
In three sentences UCR is an amazing school to attend. It is full of multiple opportunities for students who want to be involved on their campus. Being rank one of the top most diverse schools in the nation, anyone can find what they are looking for on this campus.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UCR has a great campus security. There are blue emergency towers all over the campus in case of any danger. Also available is a campus escort service for those who need someone to walk with them late at night or any other time of the day.
Greek Life Though I am not in greek life myself, all of my friends who are find it to be a great experience. UCR has sororities and fraternities based off of a lot of different interests; be it business, LGBT, or casual fun.
Clubs and Activities UCR has almost 400 clubs and multiple different events held throughout the school year. You can find out more from the university's website and club listings.
Great for these types of students UCR is great for all types of students who are driven to continue their education. Once you've found your major of interest you'll feel right at home with the courses you have to take.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One of the best traditions that UCR holds is homecoming week. Everyday is filled with different activities for students. The most well known one is the bonfire before the big game. And it all ends with a large music festival known as Heat, which is free for UCR students.
Bang for the buck UCR is one of the more affordable UC's and gives multiple opportunities for its students to receive grants and scholarships.
What to do for fun The is a plaza known as the University Village down the street from school. It has multiple restaurants and a movie theater, which is also used to host some lecture classes during the day. With UCR's free bus pass you're also able to take the bus to the local malls like the Moreno Valley mall and Tyler mall.
Food and Dining UCR's dining staff work hard to provide a wide variety of culinary cuisines and the menu changes everyday.
Dorm Life Dorm life at UCR is one of the best. Resident advisors and program coordinators are energetic and work hard to bring residents together for a fun and educational time. The rooms come in many different shapes, sizes, styles, and occupancies.
Academic Rigor The rigor of the school is set up to push students to do their best, and even when it gets hard one must remember its for the best.
Tips for prospective students Join a club or organization that interests you, and try not to be scared. There's always a place for you somewhere with new friends waiting.
In three sentences UC Riverside is one of the most diverse schools, and this leads to everyone feeling like there is a place for them at this campus. Professors and teaching assistants are some of the best in their fields and always welcome active, curious, and driven students. The opportunities that are presented to the students are limitless; be it sports, education, cultural, or anything else.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Usually you'll be hanging out with your roommate and building friends. But you can also check out the gym, game room, music room, and best of all library!
Food and Dining I love the salad bar they have here! That's all I need.
Dorm Life Pentland is a more quiet and good place to study environment, but still manages to engage with your building mates. As on the other hand AI is a much more social environment, but perhaps too noisy to concentrate during finals. I would say lothian is in between the two.
Academic Rigor I can't be so sure about academic rigor yet, because it's only week 2. If I had to rate, I would say 4 stars because the professors usually upload the lectures on ilearn.
Tips for prospective students Balance your fun and studies really well. Spend time with your friends and study when you need to. Time management is crucial!
In three sentences This school just has friendly, loving, and caring environment! People always say to make good friends, because they can influence you in a good/bad way. However, you wouldn't have to worry too much, because students here are very kind.

In three sentences Riverside is a great place to students that plan on going in to the fields of study that include agriculture, botany, biology, and engineering. However, I would not recommend it to any prospective students of the humanities fields. Riverside as place may not fulfill a college aged party goer, as there is little to no nightlife within the city. The students that prefer hiking and some other outdoor activities may find themselves satisfied with Riverside as a college town.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You should be careful. There is a notice from the police or campus security once every other week about an attempted robbery, robbery, attempted sexual offense and whatnot. They give you tips to avoid such happenings. They do offer an escort service which is helpful if you have a late class, they will escort you to your car.
What to do for fun There are lots of club activities to participate in. Bowling is popular. With a car you can go anywhere. Knotts, Disneyland, Universal Studios, the Beach. . . seriously anywhere.
Food and Dining The food on campus is ok. Panda Express smells good sometimes but doesn't taste that great. The best places on campus are Latitude 55 and The Barn. The University Village has a lot more food options, not as fun to walk to in the heat though. Rubios has great fish tacos and their cheaper during the Taco Tuesday promotion.
Dorm Life NA. I have not lived in the dorms but I have heard good things about them.
Academic Rigor The teachers are friendly and encourage going to their office hours. Several teachers are enthusiastic in their field which makes the lectures a little more entertaining. The academic advisers are helpful.
Tips for prospective students Enroll in your class as soon as possible. Give plenty of time to commute. There are lots of opportunities to meet new people. Meet with your academic adviser. Don't be afraid to look into studying abroad.
In three sentences UCR has a nice campus and the people are quite friendly. Many teachers are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Plenty of clubs to check out and participate in.

Food and Dining Buffet style, if you can't cook it's okay. Food is always ready and prepared. There are a variety of what to eat, remember to eat healthy and those freshmen 15 will only be a myth. Come early for breakfast and try the homemade orange juice it's delicious!
Dorm Life The dorm life is incredible, its a home away from home. The atmosphere is great, everyone is friendly and college orientated. Your roommates and hall mates become your family! Recommend everyone to dorm.
Academic Rigor The professors know their material so it's definitely challenging. Classes are fun but one can not slack back, it is crucially important to not procrastinate and attend lectures.
Tips for prospective students Don't believe all the college movies, real college is nothing like them!

Categories Comments Food and Dining There are a few good restaurants on campus. The sushi in the Hub is actually very good as well as Panda express. We will also have a Subway next quarter. The dining halls aren't fantastic but they do have a salad bar that is always fresh and the food is occasionally good.
Dorm Life I did not dorm this year. I commuted every day and I felt that I missed out on many things on campus. Many clubs and programs held their meeting in the evening or at night and I wouldn't be on campus during that time. If you can dorm I encourage you to do it.
Academic Rigor I am a science major so I may be a bit biased but I find classes to take a good amount of effort. You do need to take time outside of school to study.
Tips for prospective students If you do decide to come to UCR, look into learning communities. I joined one and love it. You are placed in a group of around twenty-five students and you take all your math and science classes together. It's a fantastic way to make new friends and study groups. You all have the same classes so you all have the same things to study for and your schedules are similar which make it easy to coordinate for meeting up.
In three sentences This can be the perfect school for anyone. It is challenging, inspiring, and fun. It takes a lot of work to succeed, but it is completely worth it.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have a police station on campus across the street from Oban.
What to do for fun Most of what you can do for fun revolves around yourself. Go out with friends, bring an Xbox, etc. But there is also the heat concert in the spring if you love concerts it's like 10 concerts in one event.
Food and Dining The best food in my opinion is the hub, we're getting a subway next quarter and we have a Panda Express. Other than that, the dining hall food could be worse really you get used to it over time and afterwards you really really miss it. And if you don't want to eat anything on campus there's always the university village which is less than 2 minutes from the campus if you drive.
Dorm Life If you want hot showers avoid AI. If you want a social life with at least 20 friends stay away from Pentland. Lothian is alright it's in-between the other two. :)
Academic Rigor As a science major the classes you have to take are insane and can be really hard if you don't take the time and do it right. I really can't speak for humanities majors but I know engineering majors are always busy doing something.
Tips for prospective students ALWAYS go to class even if you think the class is easy, it can mean the difference between passing and failing with certain teachers and sometimes teachers actually take role. Especially TAs for your discussion sessions. I had a TA who took role every day and if you missed more than 2 discussions you automatically failed the class.
In three sentences UCR is a school for people who are looking more to work and get out as soon as possible. If you are looking for a huge social life don't go here. If you plan on being a student then welcome to the club.

Dorm Life Campus life can be very homey if you are from the area. It gets pretty wild if you know the right people and if you are into that kind of life style.
Academic Rigor All work is hard but it is only as hard as you make it.

Categories Comments Greek Life I just joined Greek life, and so far I love it. Everyone is very welcoming, and you definitely get that sisterhood feeling/
Clubs and Activities There are tons of clubs on campus, and the school always has something going on.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus It's a tradition that you are supposed to hike up to the C and kiss it for good luck on your midterms and finals. I have yet to make the hike, but I have been warned you may want to pick a time where the weather is cool and the sun is out, because it is a serious hike.
Bang for the buck With recent budget cuts, classes have been slashed and some classes are only offered like once a year. The education is great, it just might take you more time and money to graduate.
What to do for fun There are some great little bars around campus and in downtown Riverside. Definitely make sometime to explore that area. The university also has a bus that runs from campus to the tyler mall if you ever have a huge break between classes (and you don't want to waste the gas to drive home) like I did my freshman year.
Food and Dining I try not to eat on campus, it's costly and some of the food isn't that great. However, they recently opened a subway on campus so if you have to eat on campus that's a great place to go. Lattitude 55 and the barn are not to bad either.
Dorm Life I myself did not dorm, however based off of my friends who have, living in a dorm is extremely fun. You get to meet a lot of people, make new friends, and you're pretty close to campus. The food in the halls isn't to great though.
Academic Rigor This varies depending on your major. I'm a biochemistry major and it has been grueling. If you're willing to put in the work though, it's doable.
Tips for prospective students Don't be afraid to approach your professors! Office hours will save you depending on your course. If you need that extension or maybe are looking to work in a lab, it helps if that professor recognizes you from office hours.
In three sentences UC Riverside is a very open, welcoming campus. Generally, everyone is friendly and helpful, it's hard not to feel at home. We do have a great academic program here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is like that of any other university. There is always someone trying to take advantage of the things available to students. The UCPD always makes a great effort in catching those who attempt to break the law by attacking students. The vast majority of robberies on campus are from non-students.
Clubs and Activities There are thousands of clubs and activities relating to a vast amount of things. You name it and there is something of the like.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Bonfires are always fun, it's a whole new experience initially because an actual fire is being provoked.
Bang for the buck Of course as in any other college campus things are expensive. I try to do my best and save because I consider it essential for self control.
What to do for fun There are many things to do for fun ranging from community service to parties. Either is great as long as you practice them safely.
Food and Dining The food was not of the best quality in the dorms, but i do believe that they tried. It's almost impossible to match a mother's touch in cooking.
Dorm Life Dorm life can be intimidating, at least initially for me. But this is the only way in which I felt myself become more independent and responsible, which are great attributes in a person.
Academic Rigor I strongly believe that many of the classes are challenging but they are never more than you can handle. I believe that I've grown from the many challenges thus far.
Tips for prospective students For prospective students i'd like to give a few tips. Always stay on top of the readings it may seem fastidious at first but then you get used to it and the grade is definitely worth it. Procrastination is your worst enemy in college you definitely do not want to make it a habit, it will later come back and bit you. Communicate with your T.A.'s and professors I believe it is essential.
In three sentences Studying at University of California has had a great impact in my life, definitely for good. I love this pathway that I chose to take because I feel it has made me grow as a person. The experiences here so far have been great and I look forward for more of those.

Categories Comments Food and Dining There are a lot of options for the hungry college student. Whether on the go or if you have time for a chat with friends
Dorm Life the dorms are beautiful and very well taken care of and the way everyone seemed to get along well it was fantastic
Academic Rigor This school has just opened up a new Medical school which should boost its overall rigor
Tips for prospective students This school is sometimes made fun of for being the easy UC campus to get into, but just like all the other UC campuses it es just as prestigious so it will take a lot of work to get into.
In three sentences The school was very cool very nice place. When I visited everything was just so big and awe inspiring can't wait to go to school here.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have a poll in specific locations where you can go to and ask for help. If you're scared to walk to your car at night, the campus safety is only a phone call away. Also, the police department is only a block away from campus. The UCPD will always send email if there were any crimes that had occurred recently too.
Clubs and Activities We have a variety of clubs that range from academic to being cultural. There are a lot of events hosted on campus where these clubs have the opportunities to interact with one another.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Near Pentland dorms, specifically next to K building, there is this circle and when you stand in the middle and face the buildings, you will hear your voice echoing. It is one of the most strange but cool things on campus.
Bang for the buck The Drive in movie theatres on Van Buren and in Rubidoux are most definitely the cheapest movie viewing. Only one payment of $7 per person and you are able to watch two movies in the comfort of your own car with any food you'd like to bring.
What to do for fun For those who are active, hiking to the C is always a fun activity to do with friends. Another one would be exploring downtown riverside and going to the photography museum. During the winter, the festival of lights is filled with local residents of Riverside and the most glamorous set of christmas lights at the Mission Inn Hotel. If you're a coffee shop person, Back to the Grind in Downtown is a nice, relaxing spot to study or Tyler mall is only 15 minutes away if you're a shopping fanatic.
Food and Dining Dining halls in the dorms is a must try. They always offer a variety of food from a global range. They do not just serve generic food and the salad bar is to die for. Just be careful how much you eat because you'll might get the freshman 15. But they offer healthy decisions such as salad, soup, and vegetarian food.
Dorm Life Living in a dorm is a must do because you'll meet the most amazing people. Everyone is fresh to UCR and excited to explore all that is around it. You create life-long friendships and look for future roommates that you can live with later. It is convenient to walk to campus and study rooms are the best.
Academic Rigor There are great opportunities to do well in school ranging from professor help to the academic resource center. Utilize all the resources given to a student because it will help improve your academic endeavors.
Tips for prospective students If you love to go to either the mountains or the beach, UCR is located inbetween both. Great hiking trails are around the area and Downtown Riverside is a must see. Riverside is a college city because we have UCR, RCC, Cal Baptist, and not so far is Cal State San Bernadino. Great events are hosted at UCR and you will always feel included.
In three sentences It is one of the most traditional and modern school. A collaboration of both new and older buildings. Impacted with great school spirit and so many memories are created on campus.

Categories Comments In three sentences The campus is really really beautiful, lots of new buildings. I've heard a lot of bad things about the surrounding city, though. The College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) offers a program for first-year students that i'm really looking forward to.

Categories Comments Greek Life Way too many.
Great for these types of students Interacial.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Botanical Garden.
What to do for fun Hiking. Recreational Activities. Dance.
Food and Dining Variety of food is at it's minimum but still convenient for the life of a college student.
Dorm Life Very social and anti social depending on which one you would rather have. Whether you are here strictly for school, or strictly for the social life, both of these environments are found.
Academic Rigor It is a very small campus when compared to other UC's so the professors and advisors are very up close and personal about your academic progress
Tips for prospective students My biggest recommendation is to stay connected and network with your peers. College is a community not just a campus. IN order to succeed you must be able to seek help as well as come together with your peers in order to provide help among each other.
In three sentences The University of California Riverside is very diverse campus that offers a great amount of opportunities for students. My past three years the university has helped guide me into a career environment since the first day I started. I believe UCR has acheived excellence in preparing their students for not only their careers but for the real world that awaits after.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus security is always there for you. When you are there late and scared to walk to your dorm or car, all you have to do is call and campus security will walk you.
Great for these types of students The diversity is amazing!
What to do for fun UCR has many clubs that students can join, the movies are nearby also.
Food and Dining The school has a lot of food options, even off campus.
Dorm Life I do not live in the dorms but I have not heard any complains.
Academic Rigor UCR classes need a lot of attention. As long as you keep up and study, it's relatively easy.
Tips for prospective students UCR is a great school, it has so many resources for students and professors are truly there to help, so use it! It is very diverse and most people are friendly. Keep up with homework and studying because some professors make tests tough, but as long as you do what you're suppose to be doing, you'll be fine!
In three sentences Great school. People are really friendly. The school has many resources, use them!

Categories Comments What to do for fun there are good restaurants, theaters, malls, and other places to go to for fun.
Food and Dining sometimes the dining options get boring or they have a bad meal every once in awhile, but its still good. i wouldn't recommend the unlimited plan because its a rip off.
Dorm Life the dorms here are nice especially pentland and lothian, but a-i is too cramped. overall, the dorms are nice and social.
Academic Rigor there is a lot of studying and reading each week to complete.
Tips for prospective students complete all the readings and notes. attend lecture and discussion sections. stay organized. dont procrastinate. ask questions.
In three sentences uc riverside is a nice school if you want something thats not too hard to get into but still has good programs. overall i would give ucr an a or b. the campus is nice and the financial aid is good too.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Safety this year has been an issue this year. There have been many student robberies in the area, so you have to be careful here in the middle of the night.
What to do for fun Every quarter we have a concerts: Block Party, Heat, and Spring Splash. Those are fun. We parties on the weekends just like other campus, I will say that since the school is in Riverside there isn't as much to do as a campus in LA or Santa Barbara.
Food and Dining Some days are better than others. Sometimes they have themes such a Cajun night or Thanksgiving Dinner and those nights the food is amazing. I personally liked the Dining Halls and as a student who no longer lives on campus I miss them.
Dorm Life I lived in Pentland and it was not a very sociable place. If you want to meet a lot of people then A-I or Lothian are the dorms for you. However if you want bathrooms that are personal and halls that aren't too crazy then Pentland is for you.
Academic Rigor All of the classes are doable, some are harder than others. If put in some actual effort you'll be alright. And if you think the class is going to be an issue for you, get help early on.
Tips for prospective students Join clubs, be active on campus and it'll make you're experience so much better. If you want to meet people there are a lot of opportunities to do it. Most importantly, don't mess up your first quarter by not going to class now that you have the freedom to do whatever you want.
In three sentences It's a beautiful campus, and the students here are really down to earth. Some the professors here are amazing and make you want to learn what they're teaching. They school only needs a Nursing program to make it even better.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Not much, Riverside as a city tends to be pretty dry, most kids go home for the weekend.
Food and Dining A lot of options
Dorm Life Did not dorm at UCR
Academic Rigor Really depends on the professor and nature of the course. I've taken easy and more difficult courses, you'll be studying regardless.
Tips for prospective students Take a visit and get a feel for the campus. I recommend sitting in on some classes.
In three sentences UCR prides itself on being diverse, there really are a lot of different types of people here. Be open to the school, despite the seemingly low reputation, it's not that bad. School of Medicine is coming soon, so expect our ranks to rise.

Greek Life I pledged FIJI. they cool but i aint about that life.
Clubs and Activities Hip Hop congress baby!!
Great for these types of students Down to earth ninjas.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Undie run is real. I've never done it but its increasing more people every year.
Bang for the buck Pho Saigon. Zorbas.
What to do for fun People like to party. I got over it after freshman year. Eat food and kick it with good people.
Food and Dining Dining hall as a freshman is awesome. Food at hub is aight.
Dorm Life Lived in the worst dorms West Lo B2! But the worst dorms always have the most social halls and thats what mine was! Half the doors are open till 2am and people just walk into each others room. Food is good cmon its a buffet everyday. Pentland has nicest dorms but i heard there not too social. AI and East Lo are all good as well.
Academic Rigor Riverside baby we out here! I'm getting a damn good education.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared and have fun! College is not always about getting 4.0 every quarter. Meet good people and develop personal relationships. The people you meet will be the people in your life most likely. Study hard and go to class because your paying like $50 for each class.
In three sentences Super diverse and down to earth people. Campus is not the biggest but built nice and modern. Wish we had a football team.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There isn't a whole lot on campus but sometimes they bring in really crazy stuff. The other day we had a zebra and camel on campus.
Tips for prospective students Be ready to teach yourself. You absolutely HAVE to read your textbook. Keep on top of all your work because it is on the fast paced quarter system. Most majors require being a research assistant or getting an internship if you want to go further in your education. Find a professor you like and BEG them for the opportunity to be their RA or set you up with an internship. It will really help in the long run.
In three sentences Its not the greatest school out there. Professors are completely about research and most of them don't really care about the students success. Wish I would have gone someplace else.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students For those that like a fast paced system, UCR is the place to go. The quarter system goes by fast because it is only for 10 weeks. In those 10 weeks, most of the classes have 3 major tests: 2 midterms and 1 final.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus One tradition to do before you graduate from UCR is to climb the C. It is said that if a students go to the C, which is the largest C that any UC has, and kisses it, then that student will get straight Aâ??s for the quarter. It is so much fun to climb a mountain and once you reach the top, you will feel accomplished!
Bang for the buck Tuition is increasing every year and UCR has been impacted. Honestly, if it wasnâ??t for dining dollars (free money given to students that are dorming to spent on campus), I would not spent my money on campus. Yes, it will be expensive so take advantage of all the resources that the university offers. That way, you would be maximizing the money you have to pay.
What to do for fun If you decide to live in the dorms your first year, then the possibilities for fun increases. Not only because you will be 5 minutes away from campus, but because each residential house have fun interactive events for you to get to know more people. As for campus, there are many activities. You just have to go and explore. For example, everything I do that is not class related, I think is fun. If I want to climb the C, then that is fun for me and it takes about 30 minutes to climb. Depending how your enthusiasm and how determined you are. My first time, it took an hour but only because I did not know the path. Rock climbing happens every Tuesday and Thursday and it is free to those enrolled in UCR. The gym is another thing that is fun for me. Mostly because they have Karate classes and many types of dance classes that are free to take. The huge things that happen in UCR are Heat and Spring Splash. Heat is a concert that happens at UCR and is free to registered students. Many artists, including Tyga, Nelly, and Best Coast have featured in heat. Another major event is Spring Splash, which is a miniature heat concert where artists are also featured. More information can be found at the UCR website: UCR.edu.
Food and Dining I am never getting tired of the food that they give at the Residential Restaurants or the restaurants around the campus because there is such a variety. For dining, there are many types of food that they provide. The thing that I like about it is that IT IS LIKE A BUFFET! Once you go inside and you get your plate, you can always go back and get as much food as youâ??d like! For dinner, one day there might be Chinese food and the next, there might be serving Italian food. That is another thing I like about it. There is always large variety of food. If there is something that you did not like that particular day, or have something to say. Maybe you want more Thai food, simply text them about it! As for the restaurants that are around campus, they have a huge variety too. Subway just opened and it is very efficient for the days that you want to go and have a quick sandwich before you go to class. Panda Express is there in case one day you feel like eating Chinese food. There is one place where you can eat sushi if youâ??d like at Honor Roll. The best part, they make the sushi in front of your eyes! The same goes for pasta. If you feel like eating Italian food, pasta and pizza is the way to go at La Fiamma. Custom made pasta just the way you want it. They provide many vegetables and meats for you to choose from. That is just a few of the many restaurants and fast food place that UCR provides. If you want to find out the many kinds of food places, go to attend a tour!
Dorm Life I love the fact that you are your own person and have a say of what you would want to do at the hour. Of course, with this much freedom, you will have to learn how to use your time efficiently. My past roommate and I became close friends and even today, we are still talking. I can honestly say that she will be my friend for the rest of my remaining life. The office staff knows that this will be the first time away from home for a long period and they do their best to make sure you are comfortable. They pair you with the roommate that they think you will get along with. If things do not work out, there is always help. Whether it be your Residential Advisor (RA- person in charge of the hall you live in), or the front office, they will help you and your roommate with anything that you cannot resolve by yourselves. Your roommate is not the only person that you will get to know. There are also your hall mates that are there in case you need a peer to talk to or just want to have fun by climbing the C with a group or so. There will be many people for you to talk to and the staff have many fun events that they make especially for those that are living in Lothian, A&I, or Pentland. Dances and crazy activities are usually the norm.
Academic Rigor As for the harshness of the learning, I believe that it is only hard when it is 10 at night before your test and trying to cram everything that was learned in the past 3 weeks or so (3-4 weeks is the time in between your big tests). I am a second year, and yes it took a year to realize that learning everything the night before the test was not useful. Now, I do practice problems and when it comes to tests (aka Midterms), I am well prepared. I have taken enough problems to know what to do when it comes to the test. As long as you practice what is being taught weeks before the test, learning should not be a problem, hence tests. Granted there will be professors/TA's that you may not understand at all. Not to fear, there are other people you can go to. UCR has ARC, the Academic Resource Center. ARC has tutors on almost every common subject: science, math, English, etc. Just drop by and ask your questions away.
Tips for prospective students One main important tip from a current student is to NEVER be afraid to ask for help. I have gone to professor's office hours and no one is there. I have a whole hour at least to ask questions, to come up with different scenarios and to get to know my professors better. There are times when students come and they are too asking questions about the material and then they understand it better. Math, for example, is all about getting enough practice to do those sine, cosine, and tangent problems. If you go to Office Hours with your math professor and ask for practice problems from him or her, they will be glad to do so and it shows that you want to succeed in their classroom. ASK FOR HELP!
In three sentences University of California is extremely helpful. Whether it be by professors, Teacher Assistants, or simply asking your peers, they will each do their best to make sure you, the student, understand. Don't be afraid to ask for help because they are all waiting for you.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There's hiking to shopping to going to Disneyland. There is so much to do especially because it is in the center of so many types of entertainments.
Food and Dining The food is great just remember about the freshman 15 though, you do not want to continue that stereotype.
Dorm Life It depends in the housing you choose and the people you surround yourself with. The only difference between all three housing options for freshman is that the cheapest is the oldest and the expensive one is the newest housing.
Academic Rigor I say UCR is a great school in terms of academics, biology is the most popular major.
Tips for prospective students Make sure to go look at the campus in person and with your parent(s). Make sure to apply to as many scholarships and stay positive. When things do not go as planned just remember everything happens for a reason, you might not always know the reason, but you will find your reason later.
In three sentences UCR looks similar to UCLA except it's way smaller. Most students who are attending UCR are majoring in Biology. Moreover, UCR can be pretty pricey when it comes to dorming for freshman, so save up!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There has been a string of robberies on and near campus since January of 2013 . Students have been targeted for technology. Lap tops, I-Pads, and Smart Phones have been taken by force. The school has been scrutinized in the local newspaper as well a TV news cast. Escort services are available 24/7. The campus appears to be safe and tranquil, but I would not suggest walking in the surrounding community after dark alone. In all fairness, I would not walk around the part of Riverside I live in after dark alone either.
Greek Life Fraternities and Sororities have a place on this campus. The surrounding community does not feature a sorority and fraternity row like other big campuses. Member emphasize the scholastic merits and business connections that come with fraternity membership rather than the party element perpetuated by Hollywood. If you are looking for community service opportunities, join a fraternity or sorority. If you just want to party, look elsewhere.
Clubs and Activities A few of the clubs and activities UCR is known for include: 1)Division 1 Sports , 2) Developing basketball program, 3) impressive Men's baseball has multiple alumni in the bigs including St Louis Cardinal pitcher Joe Kelly, and over 200 campus clubs.
Great for these types of students UCR is a great place for students who desire the prestige of a UC but are looking for a smaller campus and less rushed pace of life.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Some annual traditions include: 1)Painting the Big C in Box Springs, 2)Fall, Winter, and Spring Festivals, and 3)Midnight Madness Basketball Opening.
Bang for the buck I am able to live at home with my family and experience a world class education. At this point, I anticipate having less debt than friends pursuing degrees at other colleges.
What to do for fun Riverside is close to the beaches of Orange County, the deserts of Riverside/San Bernardino Counties, and the mountains of San Bernardino. As long as one owns a car (or has a friend who has a car), fun is just as hour away. Riverside has a lot of unique opportunities. Fairmount Park, malls, and downtown Riverside are just a few of the local attractions. UCR has many sports, academic, and cultural attractions advertised regularly across campus. A student could be very entertained at UCR and never leave campus.
Food and Dining The food was good featuring a wide variety of choices. I was a big fan of The Barn. The HUB offers a variety of food choices.
Dorm Life I spent a week living in the dorms as part of a EAOP program. The dorms are not made for basketball players. The beds were short, and I had to hunch over in the shower to wash my hair. The dorm rooms seemed smaller than other southern California schools I visited over the past year.
Academic Rigor The Bourns School of Engineering requires placement testing in mathematics to assure that all students are placed in appropriate Math classes for success in the engineering program. For those students who may be lacking in certain academic areas, the UCR Summer Bridge programs offers a leg up to those who may not be ready for the rigors of college. Testing out of class through the use of scores on AP or IB exams is tough.
Tips for prospective students Admissions office considers the entire package- strength of transcript, SAT and SAT subject exam scores, and extracurriuluars all play a role in the decision making process. UCR had over 40,000 students apply for admission for the fall of 2013. For many students, UCR is a first choice rather than a backup school.
In three sentences UCR is an excellent school for those students pursuing degrees in Engineering or Natural Sciences. Bourns College of Engineering has a strong reputation in the western region of the United States. The college has a strong Creative Writing program, a respected education college, and a developing medical school.
