    - Don't be intimidated by the 'party school' reputation. While there are parties, you don't have to party to have a good time. There are plenty of other things to do if you're not into that.

    You cannot pick a better place to live than Santa Barbara. The beach is literally a few minutes away on foot, and what better way to study than on a towel by the ocean with the peaceful sound of waves crashing in the background? The campus is beautiful itself, with the lagoon, lots of trees and plants, and modern infrastructure. There are honestly countless activities offered that there is really no excuse to be bored or anti-social. There are clubs for sports fanatics, nonprofit groups, political activists, environmentalists, religious debaters, and just about anything else that strikes your fancy. There are also soccer games at least once a week, which are a blast to attend. Students and faculty alike get incredibly spirited at the games, and it is an experience that every Gaucho should cherish. If you choose to live in the dorms, Resident Advisors (RAs) are required to hold at least a few house activities per quarter too, so you don't even have to go looking for events most of the time. There is also student government, as well as hall council, both of which are fabulous ways to get involved and make progressive changes on campus. Additionally, everybody who goes to UCSB is seemingly inherently friendly. I have already found an incredible group of friends, and everybody I have met has had positive experiences with finding their niche. Whatever it is that you are interested in or would like to be involved in, UCSB has it. (Well, everything except football, that is. That is quite a shame.)

    Of course, there is the overwhelming reputation associated with UCSB as a party school. The school most certainly lives up to this reputation, but don't let that discourage you. Partying is a huge aspect of socialization, especially on weekends, but it is avoidable. There are always weekend activities put on by the school, such as an improv group, movie nights, game nights, and more. Additionally, many people in my dorm spend nights playing a variety of board games or snuggled up in the lounge with a movie and some popcorn. These kinds of activities can be just as fun as a night out in Isla Vista, and they are entirely respectable ways to entertain yourself. Although the party scene is apparent, it is not pushed onto those who want to stay away from it, so each person can decide for his or herself how much or little to take part in the partying. read full review
