Categories Comments Great for these types of students Anyone who genuinely enjoys learning. It can be about anything, but for someone who's interested in something specific, you will find a great class about it here. It's also great for those who love Chicago, as the University has many connections and services around the city. Finally, the University has a very worldly feel, with international exhibits, programs, professors and a large group of international students. Anyone who's interested in an international experience would like it here.
Tips for prospective students Learn about the transportation schedules of your nearby buses and the university shuttles. Knowing these will help you get around much more quickly and efficiently to go out and have fun! Also, don't be afraid to ask upperclassmen anything about their experiences in classes. They'd love to tell you, but keep in mind that not everyone will like the same classes- everyone has different interests!
Bang for the buck Though the price may be high, the University provides great services and academics that warrant it. The housing is great, along with security, and transportation services. Also, the University has great career and connection services around the city and the country. There are many tutoring and aid services to help you through classes. Finally, the academics itself is world-class, providing very in-depth information and teaching students how to think in each class, rather than memorize facts.
Am enjoying being here The stereotype that this is where fun comes to die is simply not true. True, there may be some difficult times academically, but it definitely does not take over your life. It only teaches you to focus when you need to. I have found a large variety of people, and each person seems to find their particular niche of people, whether they love math and movies on weekends, explore Chicago, or a more social atmosphere attending parties. There is definitely a place for everyone, and with the city of Chicago all around you, there is always something to do.
Am learning a lot The classes are very educational and require a lot of focus. The best part is the university understands this, and so there are a lot of opportunities to get help from free tutors and TA's almost every day throughout the quarter.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students -Students who want an academic challenge. -Students who want a diverse college experience. -Students who are interested in research fields or in theoretical fields. -Students with a passion, who want to study with other students with a passion. -Students comfortable in a big city setting.
Tips for prospective students -Visit campus before you decide to apply/accept. The atmosphere at UChicago is intimidating for some and invigorating for others. If you feel overwhelmed on a campus visit, this might not be the place for you. -Take the most time on the Uncommon Essay part of the application. That's your opportunity to show the admissions staff a side of yourself that isn't evident in letter grades and an extracurricular list. They want to see what makes you tick, not just what makes you better than every other applicant. -If you do decide to come here, look at all the student organizations, research opportunities, extracurricular activities, and so on. The college has a lot to offer, if you take the time to explore.
Bang for the buck The only disadvantage of UChicago is that it's very expensive. The high academics and numerous opportunities provided are wonderful, and I feel they are worth the price, but $50,000+ per year is still an awful lot.
Am enjoying being here Along with the academics, UChicago has a plethora of extracurricular activities: sports, theatre, music, etc. In the dorms, students are split up into houses, of around 50-100 people. Houses will organize activities as well. Plus, it's in the city of Chicago. I can always find something to do and enjoy. Anyone who can't isn't trying. It's a really fun experience.
Am learning a lot For me, one of the key points of a school was that it had to be academically challenging. UChicago absolutely fits the bill here. The courses are rigorous, and the professors go out of their way to make the course interesting and highly educational.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students open, hardworking, the type that takes long projects and breaks them into pieces. good writers. city dwellers
Tips for prospective students i suggest you decide how you balance social and academic life now and examine how that might change coming here. Are you okay with that a change?
Bang for the buck The dorms were horrible, ripped furniture, germy carpet in need of new everything. They are getting much better though, built two new dorms so newcomers will never know the of the infested old ones.
Am enjoying being here The rigorous coursework is stressful, and its hard feeling warm and comfortable in Chicago's bitter winters. It is not easy to engage in social life because everyone is preoccupied trying to stay above water in class.
Am learning a lot It's called restricted access. It's amazing, we learn everything from a primary angle; our professors wrote the textbooks that students at other colleges study from.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you don't sincerely enjoy the pursuit of knowledge, you won't like it here. You run into far more students who say they don't particularly care about the increased paycheck foreseen for college graduates than who list that as a top 5 reason for coming here. In fact, of the six or so people with whom I've discussed post-graduation plans, four have said they would be perfectly happy doing menial labour for pay and pursuing their interests in their spare time. In reality, most of them will become fabulously rich one way or another (even if it's the route of Tucker Max). But both of these illustrate the types of people who thrive at the University of Chicago: people with an insatiable drive for knowledge, and people with whatever quality of passion is associated with an entrepreneurial spirit.
Tips for prospective students Although, ironically, the University has moved to the Common Application, probably just to inflate application numbers, the application was traditionally called the Uncommon Application. Now it's just the Uncommon Essay supplement to the Common Application, but this should lead you to a certain inference: that essay is probably the most important part of the application, so make sure you know how to 1) think and 2) write before you start it. Other than that, I seriously encourage visiting, because that's the only way you'll know if this is the right place for you. You probably hear that all the time, but it is especially important for a quirky place like the University of Chicago.
Bang for the buck With 3 classes costing the same as 4, given a class with three 50 minute lectures per week, it comes to between $125 and $175 per class. Honestly, I wonder about the bang for the buck sometimes. Overall, I believe it will be worth it in the end. The unique education, the quality of student life, and the experiences afforded by that arguably exorbitant tuition make it, in my opinion, worth it—but it's open to debate.
Am enjoying being here But don't let the predilection for intellectual stimulation fool you: there is plenty of fun to be found here, whatever your definition of fun may be. The parties may not compare with some other campuses, but they are better than you might expect. I'm in one of the residence halls with a reputation for hermitic behavior and complete lack of social life, which should be saying something when the same reputation has been given to the campus as a whole. And yet, that stereotype has been completely disproven in my experience, both for this residence hall and the rest of the campus. Moving along: being in Chicago is especially great if you are from a smaller town. I'll admit I still miss Seattle and would say I prefer it, but it is undeniable that the diversity and magnitude of opportunities available in the Second City are appreciable. Overall, the people I've met, opportunities I've had, and unique experiences available here have caused me to enjoy my time here immensely.
Am learning a lot Even though I'm only taking 3 classes this quarter (3 or 4 qualify as full time), it's definitely a sizable load. The 10 week quarter has gone by extremely fast, with tons of material covered every week. The pace is great for an avid learner, and if you are taking courses you are interested in, you will have plenty of opportunity to learn more than what's in the textbook. Even outside of class, everyone has a passion for knowledge that easily rubs off on you, and learning becomes a full-time activity. For example, at a party at the end of 3rd week, I got a rundown of the history of the Irish Civil War over beers while at a party.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Social, intellectual, diligent, curious, passionate, and dedicated.
Tips for prospective students Have a blast, read fast, make it last - don't be your house's outcast.
Bang for the buck UChicago will bang your buck better than any ivy. After all, it's a school of skilled economists - who but them to seek an efficient allocation of your family's resources?
Will enjoy being here Of course! University of Chicago's campus is enough to make Harry Potter jealous - from our unique housing system to our mascot - the phoenix - to our grand piano-outfitted dormitories, scav hunts, and scarves, the University of Chicago is by far the most enjoyable part of the Hyde Park neighborhood. Scratch that - of the Chicagoland area. Scratch that - of the collegiate world.
Will learn a lot Though I had the fortune of being able to decide between the University and several other schools - chief among them Cornell University - I realized that the caliber of Chicago's Economics and Political Science programs far exceeds that of Cornell's. However, my decision delved much deeper than surface-level comparisons of U.S. News & World Report program rankings. Unlike any ivy league school, the University of Chicago is the birthplace of one of America's most influential schools of economic thought. It is the collegiate home of Milton Friedman; it is the hub of Monetarist thought; it is the school where Freakonomics author Steven Levitt teaches, and where any aspiring economist, attorney, or even investment banker should aspire to learn.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for students who like to think outside of the box and take a different approach towards solving problems and confronting challenges. Students needs to have a good work ethic and know how to prioritize their time and activities. The school is difficult, but with the proper time management and work ethic it is possible to make your class work less stressful and more enjoyable.
Tips for prospective students Get involved in your community as well as in your school. Making yourself as diverse as possible will help you in the long run. Make your name familiar with UChicago - talk to recruiters, visit the campus and take tours, speak with admission advisers and counselors to express interest in the school. Lastly, apply early to help your chances of acceptance.
Bang for the buck UChicago is definitely a financial commitment that may be the deciding factor in choosing whether or not to attend the college but the monetary commitment functions as an investment into each student's future success. With all graduating seniors that I have known, they have secured jobs in competitive career fields. Also, the professors staffed at the University are among the best in the nation. The University of Chicago has an extensive number of Nobel Prize winners who teach at the school. While you pay a pretty penny for the University, you are also learning for the best and the brightest.
Am enjoying being here Overall, I enjoy being at the school. During my first year, I confined my social life only to the classroom and my dorm room, which did not provide for much fun and entertainment. There are different student organizations and activities on campus that provide students the opportunity to get involved, network, and socialize with students on campus as well as alumni. With the school, you definitely make what you want of it; if you want to keep to yourself, then that is easily possible, but if you want to socialize and be involved, there are more than enough organizations available to guarantee student involvement.
Am learning a lot The Core Curriculum grants students the opportunity to experience the different fields of study and the various departments available. Once you decide which course you want to take for an intended major, there is generally a numerous amount of electives for your major that enable you to delve further into your intended area of study. Not only this, but you are able to specify your intended major by choosing speciality electives within your major that may be of particular interest. The courses are definitely challenging and force you to think analytically and critically about the material, but this provides students with the necessary tools to succeed in life outside of class such as internships and jobs. Despite the challenges and the difficulties of the coursework, the classes and the school provide the resources to succeed. The relationship between students and professors is not only confined to the classroom, but professors are often available for office hours and individual appointments as well. There are tutors available as well.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UChicago is great for motivated students passionate about their field of study. This school will open many doors to careers, jobs, and internships through its alumni network, so those who understand the value of connections will do well. Students open to and looking for new experiences, especially like living in a big city and meeting unique people, will strive here. This school isn't the best for students looking to party a lot, but, that being said, the party scene is not shabby at all. Students who enjoy spending time with friends in the lounge or room/apartment parties will be satisfied. Good luck!
Tips for prospective students Apply early! Look into every financial aid and scholarship resource you know of, for both need-based and merit-based assistance. Make sure you visit campus (hopefully during Spring quarter) before you make your decision. Be prepared for challenging, yet intriguing, coursework. If you do decided to attend the University of Chicago, you're first priority is to establish a balance between academics, extracurricular, and social activities that fit your lifestyle. This is both possible and crucial to success.
Bang for the buck The University's Office of Financial Aid gives generous need-based aid, using both its own and federal resources. The Odyssey Scholarship, a program launched a few years ago, will replace all or half of a student's loan expectation given he or she is at or below a certain income level. The sticker price can scare some students away, but once you dig a little deeper (using Cappex and other scholarship finders), there is plenty of aid available. UChicago uses every dollar for the good of its students, providing security and police personnel, health and wellness resources, and subsidized activities both on and off campus.
Am enjoying being here The social life and extracurricular activities can be whatever you make of them. Coursework can be slightly overwhelming during mid-terms and close to finals, but if you stay on top of your work and stay organized, there shouldn't be any problem. With this attitude, students have plenty of opportunities to get into the city, experience campus culture, and have fun! I myself love the extracurriculars offered on campus and take every advantage to go downtown. Attending comedy shows, Model UN, and my religious group are a few of the opportunities I take advantage of myself.
Am learning a lot Every course I am enrolled in opens my mind to new vistas of knowledge. The instructors can be, at times, too involved in the coursework, but they make up for it in passion and quality. The defining characteristic of academics at UChicago is that everyone is really passionate about what they are studying. People come here to get a world-class education, and it shows.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are blue lights that have a 2 minute response time, private security, and shuttles all-night that will take you anywhere around campus. Use common sense and you will be safe.
Bang for the buck You will get a great education at one of the best schools in the world with some of the smartest kids you will ever meet.
What to do for fun Hang out with your friends, go into Chicago, or go to one of the many events the University and its students put on like Scav. Hunt or Humans vs. Zombies.
Food and Dining Better than a lot of places, but not the best in the world by a long shot.
Dorm Life The housing system here is great and really helps you meet new friends and upperclassmen.
Academic Rigor Even the blow-off classes aren't just an easy A, you have to work for your grades here.
Tips for prospective students The admission's department really looks for people who are a good fit. Your essays are a key part of this and are very important. Show your personality through your essays.
In three sentences The University of Chicago is one of the best universities in the world. You will work extremely hard, learn a ton, and have a great time. You will meet amazing people and don't worry fun never dies here.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students From what I've heard, the campus is actually extremely similar in appearance to Hogwarts, so anyone who loves Harry Potter should definitely at least check out UChicago. I can also see the university attracting students who want to be challenged in the classroom and in life. UChicago is for those who want to make the world their classroom and take learning into their own lives--examining the academic details and facts of the mundane.
Tips for prospective students Keep your options open. Don't limit yourself to one or two schools because in the end, you can make a spot for yourself at almost any university. Start taking and practicing for your SAT/ACT early, and don't give up. Take them until you literally cannot take them anymore because you will increase your scores. Make sure you practice between exams.
Bang for the buck The University has a fairly high price-tag, and no one can say that it doesn't. However, especially if you're looking toward grad. school later on in your education career, I've seen everywhere that UChicago is one of the best undergrad universities. It provides you with the ability to think critically for yourself, a skill essential in grad. school.
Will enjoy being here Being in Chicago and being able to exploit all the different cultural events that that means can be no less than stimulating. From what I've seen, too, student life is very well developed on campus with residential colleges and extra-curricular activities that range from theater to sports to competitive writing.
Will learn a lot From everything that I've seen, UChicago provides a caliber of coursework that is difficult to match. The breadth and the depth of the courses is definitely at the top of every ranking, and this is one of the major factors for me in determining a university to attend.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you want to challenge yourself going into college, are open to new experiences, and generally love research, this is the college for you.
Tips for prospective students UofC is a daunting school. Visit before accepting. Also make sure your uniqueness comes out in your resume. The school is made up of eccentric, talented, driven students. Prove you're one of them.
Bang for the buck To go the UofC, you pay through the nose, but you also get the best teachers, the best research opportunities, and a heck of a lot of experience to bring forward.
Did enjoy being here Though fun may not come to die here, it is a bit muted. There were full weeks when I couldn't do anything but study or suffer, and all my friends had the same problem.
Did learn a lot UofC is an incredibly demanding school for undergrads just out of high school. The teachers expect excellence, and the top students from high school will find themselves at the middle of the pack at Chicago. However, the knowledge I gained in such a short period was immensely helpful and stimulating every step of the way.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Those who seek knowledge and those who are unafraid to back down from a challenge.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus * Polar Bear Run - running naked across the quad during the coldest week of January. * Jumping into the lake on the first and last day of class.
What to do for fun Go participate in a few intramural sports when the weather is nice, or play in the snow with your friends when it's cold! Hundreds of clubs provide many options for the varying interests on campus. For a more relaxing atmosphere, board games and house trips are ideal fun.
Food and Dining Often the food gets repetitive and sometimes its content is questionable, but it is definitely edible and much higher in quality than many other colleges.
Dorm Life The house system forms a perfect foundation for getting to know people and making friends. The dorms are all unique in personality, and you can always switch out to one that suits you more.
Academic Rigor UChicago's course expectations and workload are not to be underestimated. It's ideal for anyone looking for a challenge.
Tips for prospective students No procrastination, no worries; easier said than done. Get to know your professors and classmates! You'll find you can have a great time even while struggling to answer astrophysics problem sets.
In three sentences There is no end of things to do, ranging from economics lectures to playing frisbee on Stagg Field. Classes are difficult - even impossible at times, but everyone finds a way to pull through. Because all students suffer equally and together, there is a campus-wide empathy that founds a unique sense of community.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck The University of Chicago has one of the highest tuitions in the United States. Though the institution does offer a lot of opportunities and excellent academics, there are many other similar institutions which offer more social opportunities
What to do for fun Many students join RSOs (registered student organizations) in their first- or second-years. The Greek community, though small at the university, is very close-knit and welcoming. The students involved in Greek life participate in various philanthropic events, barbecues, pool parties, etc. which generally occur on a weekly basis and are open to all. In addition, there are many sports teams, club sports, multi-cultural organizations, student government opportunities, and many more chances to have fun that are widely available to all students. Because this is a smaller school, there is always space available to those who wish to join an organization.
Food and Dining The dining system at Chicago is similar in most aspects to other university dining systems: buffet-style is offered for flat rate at the beginning of the year. The amount of times one can utilize this dining system depends on the plan purchased, of which there are five. Some plans offer credits, which can be used in outside locations, such as local coffee shops, bookstores, etc.
Dorm Life The university uses a house system which entails various houses under different names, all of which have their own living room space, mottos, mascots, etc. Although this Harry Potter-esque lifestyle may seem fun to some, it is not for all. For example, if you end up in a house whose personality is vastly different from your own, you may find yourself very left out. However, a very specific group of people at the U of C very much enjoy this type of college living. In addition, there is a house family assigned to each house, which generally consists of a married couple and their children. Some individuals like this 'family' feeling, especially those who are from far away; others are not so fond of it, as the presence of both parental figures and resident assistants in every house can be somewhat suffocating, especially because they have a tendency to keep a very close eye on new students.
Academic Rigor This university is known for (and proud of) the intense academics offered here. The quarter system results in an extremely fast-paced learning environment, which means missing a class could be detrimental to a course grade. Oftentimes, students must make a decision between having a social life and maintaining a decent GPA; there is a reason our motto Where Fun goes to die is so popular.
Tips for prospective students Prospective students should really take advantage of the opportunities offered at the University of Chicago. There are so many interesting cultures both within and outside of Hyde Park that offer different types of foods, cultures, arts, shows, museums--you name it! Exploring the different Chicago neighborhoods enriches the college experience so much. In addition, the culture at the University of Chicago is incredibly diverse and very interesting. Make sure to join a few clubs, a Greek organization, or a sports team. This environment is so special because, no matter the various heritages, religious believes, political leanings, community involvement, etc. all the students here seem to share the same curiosity and passion for learning which makes the U of C experience so unique.
In three sentences The University of Chicago is both academically rigorous and rich in culture. My experience at the university has been interesting--I have met people from all over the world, experienced incredible things, such as travelling to different countries and meeting prominent political figures, and learned a lot of things about myself along the way. It is not always easy here, and it took some time to get used to, but now that I have found my place at the University of Chicago I can say with out a doubt that I have become more well-rounded, understanding of different people and places, and a better person overall.

Categories Comments Campus Safety After some Security alerts, the school hired two 24-hour Quad guards, which has greatly improved conditions. Otherwise, it's common knowledge that Chicago is not the safest place to be but as long as you're careful and not walking alone somewhere at 4am there won't be any problems.
Greek Life There is your typical street lined with frat houses that get loud on weekend nights when more than 300 people show up to a themed frat party. In the day, though, Greek life does not have huge visibility.
Clubs and Activities You can't go wrong with more than 500 clubs ranging from the Zombie Apocalypse club to the reputed United Nations team, numerous IM sports, and a city in your backyard.
Great for these types of students Curious, motivated, adventurous, smart.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Scav--a four-day adrenaline-filled scavenger hunt, the largest in the world. Over 300 items ranging from an original music composition to a nuclear reactor--we have broken Guinness world records, brought a caged tiger from the zoo to the Quad, and even had governmental agencies keep an eye on us (in the case of the nuclear reactor, which was successfully built).
Bang for the buck UChicago is indeed one of the most expensive schools in the nation, but its location is unparalleled and its education has an international reputation. If you are willing to work hard and play hard, this school will be worth it.
What to do for fun Explore! Relax on the beach and watch the city from a bonfire at Lake Michigan, go shopping on Michigan Ave, drink bubble tea from Chinatown, look through art galleries at Pilson, find great deals in Belmont thrift stores, and more...there is no place in the world like Chicago.
Food and Dining The dining halls (Bartlett, South, and Pierce) serve typical college food but fortunately they have become more health-conscious as well. Otherwise, there is always Hutch, which contains things like Subway, Noodles, Papa John's, and more.
Dorm Life The College has an extensive dorm life. Each student is placed in a House, which sits together in the dining hall and has personal House traditions such as apple-picking and more. There will always be fun, House-sponsored trips to a Chicago Bulls game or a Broadway show, and each House has two study breaks a week!
Academic Rigor What our school is known for. The Core will give you a thorough foundation and the ability to hold discussions on various topics (the most well known sequences: HUM, which is the equivalent to a Freshman English class ranging from Readings in World Literature to Media Aesthetics to Philosophical Perspectives, and SOSC, a reading and writing-intensive sequence based on social, economic, and political thought), while each major here is guaranteed quality.
Tips for prospective students Don't go in with the Where fun comes to die mentality--that's a joke, not meant to be taken seriously. Loosen up and have fun!
In three sentences A terrific school with an unmatched campus, diverse and intelligent people, over 500 clubs, and inspiring professors. You can't go wrong with this school, especially when it's also within a 15 minute walk to the Lake Michigan shore and less than 40 minutes of public transportation from downtown Chicago, Chinatown, and some other quirky towns.

Greek Life it exists
Clubs and Activities There's a ridiculous variety of clubs on campus. don't know if this is unique to chicago but yeah
Great for these types of students people who like school

Bang for the buck It is expensive. But probably a good education as far as educations from universities go.
What to do for fun Your own hobbies. Walk around hyde park..restaurants, parties, talk with people, or, of course, something in Chicago
Food and Dining +1 Convenience of a meal plan -1 Dining halls aren't that great +1 Restaurants around hyde park
Dorm Life There's a house system, and people that like dorm life have found it great.
Academic Rigor Some classes aren't very rigorous, but for the most part they are. So if you're into that just be aware.
Tips for prospective students Go here but don't be starry-eyed about the core.
In three sentences Is a nice place, a little isolated. People are academic-driven but you can find people who aren't. Classes are of course hard...and the party scene isn't dead if that's what you're into

Bang for the buck Recent articles in Yahoo Finance are focusing on the value of a higher education. While other colleges seem to be volatile in their bang for the buck, the University of Chicago always stands strong and in fact is ranked number in several of the articles.
Will enjoy being here I definitely think I will enjoy being here because of the awesome atmosphere UChicago has. The kids there were super friendly and interesting. Also, there seems to be coffee available everywhere, and I'm an addict so...
Will learn a lot I visited the school in April and it was an amazing experience! I was able to attend several overviews of different subjects and one especially I enjoyed was the economics one lectured by one of their Nobel Prize winners. The classes are small and in depth from what I experienced!

Categories Comments Food and Dining The same vaguely-adequate Aramark that many colleges have. Buffet style dining halls, with good hours and a 'fourth meal' from 8pm-12am.
Academic Rigor You can certainly find challenging classes if you look, and the average student is very intelligent, interested, and well prepared. Many students and profs pride themselves on being more rigorous than harvard, and some of them might be right. The raw length of the assignments is totally manageable, but expect actual challenges. Intro classes are still intro classes, though, so don't expect to be intellectually awed on Day 1.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Although Hyde Park isn't known to be absolutely the safest, the campus has many security measures set in place. You can call up a van that will drive you from wherever you are to wherever you need to be at any time (SafeRide, I think it's called), the campus shuttle runs at night, and you can even call a campus police car to follow behind you as you're walking home, if you're feeling a bit nervous.
Greek Life About 10% of students are part of Greek Life, so people who aren't a part DEFINITLEY don't feel left out. Pretty much everyone is invited to most of the parties, as well. Some of the fraternities are co-ed community service fraternities, which I thought was pretty cool. Greek Life at UC is not at all like it would be at your typical state school.
Clubs and Activities There's practically everything on campus. There is a gigantic array of clubs and activities (several hundred, ranging from the conventional to the absolutely absurd), and people are always starting new clubs (anyone is free to). A note to music students: while there is no music performance degree offered by the college, there are still plenty of opportunities. There is a music degree, which is basically an academic degree (theory, history, etc.). There is also a number of very strong music groups, like the University Symphony Orchestra. There's an audition at the beginning of the year that matches you to the ensembles you would be good for, as well as to a private teacher -- the University will pay 10-60% of the cost of your private lessons, and some students even get to take lessons from Chicago Symphony Orchestra members! I found pursuing music at UChicago to be preferable (at least for me) to following a traditional music performance program at other schools.
Great for these types of students Curious, intellectual, desiring a broad education, desiring an education that is more focused on knowledge for knowledge sake than preparing for a very specific career path (although Chicago Careers In... program provides tons of help setting students up in strong careers). If you're curious and quirky, this is the perfect school. If you consider yourself pretty indie (or, hipster, to not mince words) you'll also probably love it, in all honesty.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I believe the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction or something of a similar sort was created on campus. Fermi stayed in a dorm in Snell-Hitchcock residence hall. $1 milkshakes on Wednesdays are a pretty darn good tradition if you ask me. Burton-Judson residence hall is essentially Hogwarts. Many of the residence halls are historic. Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House is on campus (if you're not an art history buff, that's arguably the most famous house by arguably the most famous American architect). The Rockefeller chapel is absolutely gorgeous. There are multiple museums on campus, like the Oriental Institute (about Near Eastern culture) and the Smart Museum of Art. The Logan Center for the Arts is an absolutely amazing building opening this fall that has incredible facilities. Oh, SCAVENGER HUNT -- every year, almost everyone campus participates in a massive, insanely ridiculous scavenger hunt. Items on the list have included things like assembling a nuclear reactor (and people actually did it). It's pretty intense. Also, if you're admitted, you get a nice maroon scarf in the mail!
Bang for the buck Their financial aid is pretty much unsurpassable -- they're rivaled by the famously generous Ivies, but otherwise they're quite good. The Odyssey Scholarship ensures that most students whose family incomes are below $90,000 will not have to pay any loans. They also are one of few prestigious schools that offer merit scholarships, and they give National Merit Finalists $2,000 a year, or $1,000 a year for students not on financial aid.
What to do for fun Join one of the hundreds of RSOs (what UC calls their clubs), explore Chicago (your UChicago ID doubles as an arts pass that will get you discounts and even get you in to places like the Art Institute for free!), chill in Hyde Park, ride your bike or take a run along Lake Michigan, play on an intramural or club sports team...if there's something you want to do, it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll find it, unless you're into white-water rafting or something -- there isn't really a lot of super wild area anywhere near the school.
Food and Dining There are four or so dining halls on campus, all with a variety of options, including vegan, vegetarian, Kosher, Hallal, etc. The food is really quite good, and there's a wide variety. I believe one dining hall even has its own Mongolian Grill? Your meal plan also includes maroon dollars which can be used of buy things from some convenience shops on campus. There are also many cafes around campus, with names like Hallowed Grounds, and one shop sells milkshakes for $1 on Wednesdays! Dining halls close on Saturday evenings so that you're encouraged to go check out places in Chicago. I don't even need to elaborate on how amazing food is in the city -- it's Chicago! If you don't want to go far, there are some incredibly cool restaurants in Hyde Park, just a few minute walk from campus.
Dorm Life There are brand new dorms on campus in crazy modern styles (one dorm, known as Max P, is remiscent of an orange Lego) while other dorms are in a gorgeous neo-gothic style, so essentially everyone is bound to find a dorm they like. Some dorms have less than 100 people in them, some have several hundred. Some are off-campus, some are right on the quads. Additionally, UC has the house system (like in Harry Potter!) -- each student is assigned to a house. You meet with your housemates for meetings and a variety of activities, and you even have a house table in one of the dining halls. Plus, you can compete as a house in intramural sports teams.
Academic Rigor UChicago has a variety of t-shirts with slogans poking fun at their notorious academic rigor. One says If we wanted A's, we'd go to Harvard. You'll probably hear a lot about grade deflation, but as it turns it out UC just doesn't have grade INFLATION. Everyone is required to complete the core curriculum (this is UC's signature), which consists of several classes in basically all subjects. UChicago requires you to be knowledgable across a broad range of subjects.
Tips for prospective students Be creative and explore your interests. UChicago is famous (notorious?) for their quirky essay prompts, and be sure to have fun with these. You don't necessarily have to be off-the-wall for the prompts either, though -- my essay was just a very sincere account of an experience I had. Just take advantage of the opportunity to elaborate on your personal story. Also, try checking out the UChicago Admissions Tumblr page -- it'll give you a lot of great information and a great taste of what life on campus is like. And of course, the school is selective, so take challenging classes, get good grades, blah blah blah. Just remember -- they like curiousity and personality.
In three sentences The U of C is focused on academic rigor and, as they frequently talk about, the life of the mind. It's an incredibly intellectual school in a fun neighborhood in an amazing city. At UChicago, you will be encouraged to learn a lot, but you will also experience one of the most important cities in America.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have one of the largest private police forces in the world, and security updates are sent anytime someone is caught in an unfortunate situation. Of course, being in a big city you still have to take precautions, but it's almost never a threatening environment.
Greek Life It's definitely there! The great thing about Greek life on campus is that it's not pervasive, and not necessary if you are looking to be social. If you do want to do Greek life, there are over a dozen fraternities and sororities that are very active -- and you'll find that most people in the Greek system are incredibly intelligent.
Clubs and Activities If you enjoy doing anything, there's probably a club for you here. I've found groups I had never even heard of before, and every club here is very open to newbies.
Great for these types of students People who enjoy learning anything and everything.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Scavenger Hunt. Truly the oddest time to be on campus (unless googly eyes on every campus building is the norm for you).
Bang for the buck The University of Chicago, for all its great points, is unfortunately one of the most expensive schools in the country. You will have to work for your money if you end up here -- be it scholarships, internships, or campus jobs. You will likely graduate with quite a bit of debt; but if you land a competitive banking job thanks to your Economics degree and the career service on campus, or really love engaging your academic field of study, what does it matter?
What to do for fun Some students tend to forget that there is a sprawling metropolis of over 5 milllion people in our backyard! If you like fancy restaurants, exploring vibrant neighborhoods, or concerts and shows, there is always something to do. Campus events happen all the time, and we have some great free museums if you don't ever feel like straying too far from home. Plus, you can almost always find a party on the weekends, in your dorm or in one of the dozen frat houses.
Food and Dining There are three main dining halls on campus, and all first years are required to be on a meal plan. Food ranges from decent to depressing, and the staff can be a mixed bag of friendly to callous. Occasionally, it may be tough to find food on campus, and all dining halls are closed Saturday nights to force you to explore. But thanks to the Housing system, there is usually someone at your dining hall to talk to, and some of your greatest conversations will happen at the dinner table.
Dorm Life All students are required to live in the dorms their first year. Dorms range from ivy-covered stone buildings from the 1890s, to modern and eye-catching architecture. Dorms are divided into houses of 60-100 students, that do everything together from rock-climbing to weekly study breaks. Most of your first friends will be your housemates. Dorm life varies between dorm halls, however, and there are some that are more active in campus life than others (this is slowly changing, though).
Academic Rigor This school is tough. In addition to being taught by world-class professors at the top of their field, the courses take place over a span of only ten weeks thanks to the Quarter system, instead of 18 weeks at most colleges. If you get in, be prepared for 100+ pages of reading a week, midterms after midterms, and problem sets that work you to the bone. At the end of the day though, you will feel both smarter and rewarded.
Tips for prospective students With such eccentric and puzzling essay prompts, many applicants feel they have to turn the weird up a notch in order to even have a shot at getting in. Don't try and amplify your quirks to impress the admissions officers -- presenting yourself as a capable student with an interesting personality traits should be enough. Also, an interview always helps, and usually feels more like having coffee with a friend than applying for a job. Don't be intimidated.
In three sentences The University of Chicago is known more for its academic rigor and all-encompassing intellectualism than its campus life or party scene. This is far from true, however! If you're looking for hard-hitting academics, a picture-perfect campus, top-notch amenities AND an active and engaging student body, the University of Chicago might be right for you.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UCPD is the second largest police force to the Vatican.
Greek Life Hilariously pathetic.
Clubs and Activities Fantastic! Especially if you are a writer.
What to do for fun Good night life, very relaxed drinking policies. Though if you're coming here for that reason, you've got the wrong school.
Dorm Life But depends on the dorm. Very different feel in each.
Tips for prospective students Don't join extra-curriculars for title purposes- you are not in high school any more. Be wary of how you present yourself on the internet before coming here, you will be judged. Don't feel the need to prove your intellectualism all the time, you'll come off as pompous. Safest assumption: everyone around you is smarter and more well-read then you. See this new modesty as an opportunity.
In three sentences UoC goes beyond its infamous tagline 'where fun comes to die'. Its actually enlightened fun, yet an ever-present intellectualism which isn't quite as overt as you might fear. It's certainly not a 'work hard then play hard culture', but rather a 'think hard and never stop playing'.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Hyde Park can be sketchy but the UCPD are REALLY on top of things. There are occasional muggings but if you're smart, alert, and cautious there are really no safety concerns.
Greek Life Ha. Ha. There are frats and sororities but let's be real here.
Clubs and Activities UChicago has TONS of clubs (called RSOs) and activities constantly going on on campus. Undoubtedly you'll find ones you're interested in and if not, you can start your own!
Great for these types of students Those who are passionate about learning and not about beating the person next to them. Those who want to never be bored and who like being involved in tons of clubs and immersed in their studies.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Scav and Humans Vs Zombies top my list as two of the strangest (allbeit wonderfully charming) UChicago traditions. I'd describe them but wouldn't do them justice.
Bang for the buck UChicago is expensive but the more time I spend there, the more I realize it is worth it. You truly are growing not only as a student but as a person and that is invaluable.
What to do for fun One of the main reasons I chose this school was because of the amazing city of Chicago, located a short bus and L ride from the campus. There you can find tons of things to do--shows, dining, shopping, concerts and more and the best part is that activities are sometimes subsidized by the school!
Food and Dining Okay, so, the food is not great. That doesn't mean it's inedible and I never went hungry. It just takes a little bit of creativity and memorization of the food schedule to find your favorite meals.
Dorm Life UChicago got it right when they implemented the house system here. The close-knit community they create not only makes the dorms home, it keeps off-campus residents part of the family. House parties, trips, and events are some of the best memories of every student.
Academic Rigor There's no pretending this school isn't one of the most academically vigorous in the nation. But that's how top-rate education should be, yes?! Ignore the horror stories or the where fun comes to die slogans; UChicago balances work and play wonderfully.
Tips for prospective students Come in to the school with an open mind and eager attitude. There are so many exciting people, clubs, organizations, and events going on on campus that you'll miss out on if you are judgmental or don't embrace all the opportunities on this campus and community.
In three sentences UChicago is the school for kids who sincerely love learning and are looking to be challenged in their educational experience. The workload is vigorous, yes, but the classes are interesting and professors are dedicated. The entire time you're here, you know you are getting a top-notch education while being around the most quirky, fascinating, and genuine student body.

Will learn a lot The curriculum here is, as far as I can tell, extremely challenging and diverse.

Categories Comments What to do for fun downtown chicago is nearby, which obviously has a lot to do, or there are on-campus restaurants and other places to go. there are things available for a wide range of interests
Food and Dining the quality of the food is pretty good, but it can be boring
Dorm Life open dorm experience, with clean buildings, and friends close by
Academic Rigor incredibly rigorous, with a fair amount of work each week, but the classes are great
Tips for prospective students make sure you want to go to an academically rigorous school, because if you do not want to do work and study, this is not the place for you.
In three sentences the school is very tough academically, but there are a lot of interesting people and the classes and teachers are great. a compact, pretty campus, with lots of things to do, especially being so close to downtown chicago

Categories Comments Campus Safety Improving. Still in Hyde Park; so can't walk alone at night.
Greek Life Not officially existent. If you really really care about it, don't come here.
Clubs and Activities Many RSOs. Some good, some just for the name.
Great for these types of students Love academic inquiry. Already knew teleportation was possible. People who think getting a 4.0 means you didn't challenge yourself enough.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Too many to list. Normal people think they've landed on another planet
Bang for the buck Undoubtedly expensive, but probably worth it if you use the networking resources/internship opportunities that come your way. Otherwise you'll be out a 100 grand without a career.
What to do for fun Absorb city life. Visit the beach. Go to the museum. Enjoy a feature at Doc Films or a show at the Court Theatre. Learn.
Food and Dining This has been up and down year to year (and even week to week). At its best, you get to taste new foods that you've never tasted so you think they're amazing. At worst, you get good nutrition. And you can always pay from pocket for Subway, sushi, and pizza (on campus).
Dorm Life Not the greatest not the worst. Students form close-knit communities. Some of the buildings/facilities are a bit old, but that is definitely changing (and has changed over the last year). People don't really care about going out and having fun (are those phrases even English?)
Academic Rigor In any college there are always some easy classes you can choose, unless you are at UChicago. You can challenge yourself no matter smart you are. Be warned though, not the easiest in terms of grading (which I actually preferred).
Tips for prospective students Try to create an aura and passion for understanding; when I interviewed here I talked about how I studied quantum mechanics in high school on the side. They are not looking for people who are involved in every extracurricular activity, but rather who are passionate about learning and exploring
In three sentences Students here love knowledge and learning. They love scholarly inquiry. And they are a bit quirky.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I was told that with a bit of common sense, students are fine. Hyde Park is also one of the safest areas in Chicago.
Great for these types of students Quirky bibliophiles would definitely fit in, it seems. I had no trouble talking to current students about what they liked about the university. Also, Harry Potter fans would love the campus!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Scav Hunt! I would love to get together with a house and hunt up some challenging objects.
Bang for the buck Expensive, but I think that the connections made at the university will help for years down the line
Food and Dining There were some great restaurants near campus. I went to the Med for lunch there, and it was great. I'm pretty sure its a college hangout sort of cafe. Also, there are so many coffee houses!
Dorm Life Personally, I love the idea of houses. Also, I was told that when you decide to attend, there is a survey that helps match you with a compatible roommate.
Academic Rigor Challenging, but one of the best in the nation. Those who honestly love to learn should do well. The college helps spring-board you into the world.
Tips for prospective students Apply early! The University of Chicago has tons of applications, and it is important that you stand out.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The University of Chicago has probably a density of police force equivalent to metropolitan New York City. There are a lot of cops on campus, and campus is not very large at all. Unfortunately, Hyde Park is surrounded by poor neighborhoods and assaults/muggings are very frequent. Quite a number of my friends have been mugged, and one almost assaulted with a crow-bar. It's dangerous on campus, and one of my friends was mugged, along with his three other associates along with him. Being in groups doesn't help sometimes, but being cautious and alert does.
Greek Life -Not familiar with it-
Clubs and Activities There are lots of clubs, lots of clubs, and lots of sports to choose from at the University of Chicago. There are singing groups that perform, dance groups that perform, martial arts clubs that regularly meet, specific academic interests groups that regularly meet. There is no shortage of clubs and extracurricular activities here.
Great for these types of students This university is excellent for students who love and follow politics very much. There are hardly any students that I have met who do not have some sort of strong opinion on public policy and politics in the United States or abroad. There are a large amount of students who participate in MUNUC (Model United Nations of the University of Chicago) and the amount of work that people put into this club is possibly even more than for their classes. This university also hosts a very large secular/atheist club. I'm not an atheist, but expect to hear some vitriol towards religious persons from time to time. It's not usually upfront, but things can get heated at times.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every year the University of Chicago hosts its annual Scavenger Hunt (called Scav), which usually involves a list of thousands of items. Some of these items carry decimal point values, some carry many more points Some items have included eating your own umbilical cord, creating a nuclear reactor (they're proud of that one), creating a miniature viking ship to burn and sing to in Lake Michigan, creating a huge six foot diameter ball.
Bang for the buck If you make the most out of your time here this university can propel you into a career in any field that your heart desires. The academics are rigorous, the faculty sharp, and the researchers very dedicated. Find an internship here and work hard at it, because this university and the opportunities it offers are prestigious. If you do not take advantage of all of the opportunities that this university has to offer you may not get a good bang for your buck. This university costs approximately sixty thousand dollars a year. Dreams can be made or easily broken at this university.
What to do for fun There's not much to do on campus in Hyde Park, since most of the neighborhood is either devoted to university campus research and administration buildings or to faculty housing. However, being in the city of Chicago there is plenty to do downtown or around the city. Downtown you can watch movies, go to symphonies, visit the city skyscrapers, or bike down Lake Shore drive. There are plenty of fraternities and Bar-Night where students can dance and have parties. Most of the action is off-campus however.
Food and Dining The food at the University of Chicago is about average. For the first year of eating food that isn't home-made and having a wide selection of different styles of cooking is absolutely wonderful. However, having visited colleges like Notre Dame, and others, the dining experience at the University of Chicago is about average. There are restaurants on campus that have much better food than the dining halls.
Dorm Life The dormitories are often somewhat dilapidated at the University of Chicago. Some of the newer dorms like South Campus and Max Palevsky Hall are some of the more well-kept dorms, but other dorms like Burton-Judson have not changed much beyond what they looked like in the 1950s. I live in Burton Judson, and I saw a very old black and white photograph of one of the bathrooms in the dorm. The bathrooms had not changed in the probable half century that they had been frequented by undergraduate students. Prepare to be grossed out sometimes.
Academic Rigor The University of Chicago is known well for its academic rigor and intellectual life. The university operates on a quarter system in which classes span over a ten week period, a very quick time span to learn everything that the professor requires of you. A science and mathematics course can easily eat away 10-15 hours of study and homework, and if you are a major in these fields taking two or three of these subject area courses can be extraordinarily stressful and debilitating. Knowing how to pace one's self and study efficiently are essential for survival at this university.
Tips for prospective students If you were at the top of your league at your high school be careful and be prepared to become closer to the middle or even bottom of your class when you enter this university. Undergraduate students come from around the country and around the world, and you will have to compete with the nation's and world's absolute brightest. Coming from a public school may put you at a strong disadvantage over private school students, but hard work, rigor, dedication, and above all, resourcefulness, can help you to succeed.
In three sentences This university sports a very challenging academic atmosphere in which students often must make use of many different academic resources in order to stay on pace with other competing students. Student life ranges widely but the majority of students appear to belong to obscure sub-cultures that are nerdy, while others being a little bit more down to earth. Student facilities are less than ideal, since most of the money in the university goes to research, but the opportunities to work with world-renowned faculty and researches is phenomenally large.

Great for these types of students Students who takes education seriously and really want to achieve something in their lives.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The biggest Scavenger hunt in the world! Summer breeze - concert of famous artist every year
What to do for fun There are many students clubs, parties, Doc films ...
Food and Dining There are varieties of different meals. The dinning hall is open from 7am till 8pm and sometimes from 10pm till 11pm. All freshmen have unlimited meal plans.
Dorm Life Dorms are divided into houses for 50-100 students who meet for weekly house meetings and do a lot of fun stuff together. Students from all years live together.
Academic Rigor The University of Chicago is absolutely focused on academics. Teachers are usually available to students. Some professors are Nobel Prize laureates.
Tips for prospective students Come visit the campus and you will fall in love with it. Speak with current students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UCPD, our campus police, is the world's second largest private police force, after the Vatican. They maintain a constant, visible presence all over campus and are good at their job. That said, if you aren't careful, you're asking for it. The university itself is pretty safe, even at night, but the surrounding area is a little frightening at times. There are periodic, non-violent muggings that usually amount to someone having their phone snatched. You do have to keep an eye on your belongings and valuable electronics (especially Apple products) have a tendency to wander off if left unsupervised for long. Students generally don't enter the surrounding neighborhoods, for safety concerns. Being smart on the street will always keep you safe, but wearing an obviously-expensive coat while having your face buried in a smartphone will get you robbed in all but the most well-trafficked streets in any area of the South Side, especially at night.
Greek Life Greek life is there if you want it, but by no means is it a dominating force on campus. People interact with it in three ways: people who enjoy it join a letter society (these people broadly fit the stereotype of greeks at other schools), others just go to parties and are otherwise unaffiliated, and still others don't interact with it at all and aren't are worse off for focusing on whatever else they do with their time. You do NOT need to be a greek to have a social life here.
Clubs and Activities Though I can't speak from personal experience, I hear nothing but wonderful things from my friends who engage in RSO (Registered Student Organization) activity on campus. There is a club for absolutely everything under the sun.
Great for these types of students Bookworms, intellectuals, nerds, prep students, future professors, future IBankers, learners, wannabe politicians.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Scav Hunt is the big one. Google is your friend to find videos of it.
Bang for the buck This really depends on how much financial aid you get and what career you are looking for.
What to do for fun The opportunities in and around Chicago are limitless. Polish, Mexican, Chinese, Greek and Italian neighborhoods are vibrant. High-end shopping is robustly available downtown. Hyde Park has a variety of restaurants, coffee shops (many local and one Starbucks), and bookshops to check out. The biggest downside to all this is that with so much work to do for class, you may not have time to visit them all in four years.
Food and Dining The dining halls are excellent. The food is tasty and there are options for every taste and diet (including halal, vegan, kosher). There are two dining halls (the third is closing in summer 2013) and they are both very good.
Dorm Life The dorms are varied, but all have their strengths and weaknesses. The University is in the process of rebuilding the dorms, so a few are rather new, while most of the smaller ones are older, but have more character.
Academic Rigor Even if you were a star student in high school, you'll be lucky to be in in the middle of the pack here. Classes are taken very seriously and there is grade inflation only in a few, select Core courses. You cannot pass classes without studying, much less get As.
Tips for prospective students Make sure YOU are a good fit for the school. There is a definite and unique personality to the culture here and it may clash with your desires in terms of college experience. This is the sort of place where constant intellectual debate and conversation pairs with a very educated and inquisitive world view for an atmosphere you may love or hate.
In three sentences This school is a fantastic place to get a serious education that will open to you every door in the world. The social climate is a mix of dorky nerd humor and prep school studiousness. People here are friendly and the professors are brilliant.

What to do for fun Downtown is only seven miles away and Lake Michigan is less than two miles away. It's incredible.
Tips for prospective students Focus on the supplement essays!!
In three sentences The campus and surrounding neighborhood of Hyde Park are stunning. The students are happy to be there and even happier to tell prospective students their own stories and about the school. Most of all, the students are eager to learn and find learning enjoyable!

Categories Comments Food and Dining A huge, centrally located dining hall has all of the best home cooked and fast food options.
Dorm Life Unique and character filled dorm buildings with an interesting system they call the house system, which is different groups within a dorm building that you take time to bond with during your years there.
Academic Rigor A very top notch education. Basically an Ivy League school, it will take complete dedication.
Tips for prospective students Tour!! It is gorgeous, and totally worth the information session to sign up. It changes your mind about the school completely.
In three sentences A complex, one of a kind education. The most beautiful campus I've seen. Difficult but worth it to apply.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UCPD is one of the largest private police forces in the country, and works with the Chicago Police Department to ensure the safety of UChicago students. There are also evening shuttle programs to transport students from their dorms to campus safely.
Great for these types of students Students who want an academically rigorous and cerebral environment, but are also interested in exploring unconventional means of fun (see traditions) will find UChicago a wonderful place to be during their undergraduate years.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Scav- Every year, for one weekend, UChicago students participate in the world's largest scavenger hunt to try to finish a list of over 300 items. There are road trip elements where students have been taken to Iowa, Canada, and Tennessee; a Scav Olympics where students compete in multiple challenges over the course of one afternoon; and some items that are just bizarre, like creating a drink-dispensing piano, or converting a bus into a bowling alley. Kuviasungnerk- a week-long January festival where hundreds of students wake up at 5 a.m. every day to do calisthenics or sun salutations by Lake Michighan, literally saluting the sun as it rises. Humans vs. Zombies- A quarterly event where hundreds of students fight the zombie apocalypse. Hosted by the UChicago Zombie Readiness Taskforce, one student (the lead zombie) attempts to spread a human-flesh craving virus among other participating students. Humans defend themselves by shooting nerf darts at zombies. If you are a human, and you're tagged by a zombie, you will become one. Buildings are safe, but the outside is not. If you are able to complete the final mission at the end of the week, you will have survived the zombie apocalypse.
What to do for fun Campus events are hosted throughout the week by student clubs and organizations, and academic departments. Events range from student theatre, study breaks, dance performances, and guest speakers and performances (recent appearances have been Sleigh Bells, Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, and Ludacris), and more. If you are not interested in what campus has to offer, you also have the endless opportunities that the city of Chicago has to offer.
Food and Dining Food and dining at the University of Chicago is good, but not great. However students are pleased with the many food options they are given, ranging from Mongolian Grill, Kosher, Halal, classic Americana, and more. UChicago Dining has also been working to provide more vegan/vegetarian food offerings, as well as working to be more eco-friendly in its practices.
Dorm Life The University of Chicago has a unique housing system. Not only are students housed in dorms, but within those dorms they are put into houses of smaller student communities of (on average) 70 students. A student's house is a place where they live, relax, and spend time with their friends. At the dining halls, most students sit with their house at their designated house table, this is where students eat (naturally), and continue to bond and relax with housemates outside of the residence hall. Students often go on trips with their house to downtown Chicago, exploring local neighborhoods, restaurants, theatre, and more.
Academic Rigor In recent years, UChicago has become infamous with the saying that it is where fun goes to die. While this statement is entirely untrue, prospective students should be aware that this is a very academically rigorous environment. Though classes can be tough, it is important to note that the UChicago faculty is very supportive and eager to help students succeed in their courses. It is also important to note that while the University of Chicago is academically challenging, it is not competitive between students. Rather, students create a supportive environment in which they help one another achieve great results in their classes by studying together, peer editing papers, etc.
Tips for prospective students Your GPA and SAT scores are important to the admissions team. But what holds even more weight is the Uncommon Application supplementary essay. UChicago takes a lot of pride in its admissions essays and you should use them as an opportunity to show your creativity and wit, in addition to your life experiences and academic qualifications.
In three sentences The University of Chicago is an academically rigorous undergraduate experience. But more importantly, it is staffed with a faculty that is committed to fostering passion in its students in a wide array of subjects. The faculty and students create a comfortable, supportive and challenging environment that help you grow as both a student and a person.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Pretty much any fun activity is available here. Sports, parties, trip into cities, and social events are all held here. There is also an excellent film club.
Food and Dining The food is not so great. All three dining commons failed health inspections last quarter. The dining commons are deceptively good when serving parents or prospective students as they will try harder for that brief period of time so people won't realize how bad they are.
Dorm Life People are generally friendly and outgoing. Although homework does sometimes interfere with social life, fun social activities happen all the time. Generally, the administration strikes a good balance between freedom and protecting the peace.
Academic Rigor The school is very rigorous. Courses can assign up to 40 hours of homework a week, although 10 hours per week is more normal for a more difficult class. There can be too much work at times where classes happen to give assignments at the same time.
Tips for prospective students Talk with other people about classes because that will help you find classes that fit you. The advisors don't have much time or knowledge so your peers are your best bets.
In three sentences The University of Chicago is a beautiful school filled with interesting, friendly people. The Core Curriculum, although it requires you to take many classes that you otherwise would not take, consists of interesting classes. The school offers academic challenge as well as good social and intellectual opportunities.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The campus itself is very safe. There are call boxes all across campus and strewn throughout the neighborhood, should you feel threatened.
Clubs and Activities UChicago has something for just about everyone. If you can't find what you're looking for, chances are you can find a group of people interested in the same thing.
Great for these types of students If you're sort of awkward, don't worry. You'll fit right in.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus UChicago was built on unusual traditions. These include Dollar Shake Wednesday (self-explanatory), Scav (the world's largest and quirkiest scavenger hunt), Kuvia (a winter exercise routine), and enough more to rival a Tolstoy novel.
Bang for the buck If you are a low-income student, UChicago offers amazing financial aid at a top-notch university. If you are more well-to-do, UChicago is a bit more stingy, but still offers some of the best this nation has to offer.
What to do for fun Go exploring! Don't stay on campus too often. Go roam around the city.
Food and Dining The food is standard college dining hall fare. Dining halls close on Saturdays, which gives students opportunities to broaden their culinary horizons within Hyde Park and the rest of Chicago.
Dorm Life The house system makes the dorms wonderful for underclassmen. Each house is its own community within the dorm, and provides great camaraderie during the tumultuous first weeks.
Academic Rigor If you're looking for a cakewalk, find some other school. UChicago is one of the most difficult in the nation, and for good reason. The ten-week quarters contain the same amount of information as, if not more than, fifteen-week semesters.
Tips for prospective students Be well-rounded, but passionate. This can't be stressed enough. Let the passion for a few activities shine through in your essay and extracurriculars; they shouldn't be lists of every activity available to you.

What to do for fun What fun? It's mostly frat life, which is stunted in and of itself given the academic rigor of the school. Farther from downtown Chicago than anticipated and you never really have time to make the trek into the city.
Food and Dining Multiple dining halls
Dorm Life Some of the dorms are really nice, such as Max P, but if you're placed at Pierce, it will change your entire experience.
Academic Rigor Fantastic school academically; socially a bit challenging.
Tips for prospective students Be certain that an incredibly studious lifestyle is what you are looking for in a college. They proudly uphold the slogan The place where fun goes to die and they mean it.
In three sentences An incredibly academic school you either love or hate. There is no middle ground

Categories Comments What to do for fun Whatever you're looking for, you can find it. We have frat parties, we have drinking, we have football games, and all those classic college endeavors. But we also have Harry Potter trivia tournaments, a cappella performances, improv comedy--and, of course, you can always venture downtown for even more entertainment possibilities.
Food and Dining We occasionally have health code type issues, but all in all the food and dining is pretty good here. There are options for vegans, vegetarians, and people with allergy or faith restricted diets. There are 2 dining halls (as of 2013-14), a food court with national chains, and more coffee shops than you can imagine. There are also two small grocery store type markets on campus. Your meal plan will more than cover all your needs. And if you get tired of campus dining, there are plenty of restaurants in the area to choose from!
Dorm Life Our house system--kind of similar to Hogwarts--makes it easy to make friends. You live with your House, go on trips together, hang out in your lounge, eat at your House table in the dining halls... You will become very close! There is a lot of variety in each House, so you will get the chance to meet lots of different people.
Academic Rigor While some core classes can be less-than-challenging, any classes you need for your major or minor will definitely put you to the test. You will be studying more than you ever have in your life. Academics come absolutely first here.
Tips for prospective students Our acceptance rate is getting lower and lower--we're exclusive! Make yourself stand out in your application. Creativity does not go unappreciated here. If you're wait-listed, contact your regional counselor. Don't give up!
In three sentences The University of Chicago is academically very challenging, quirky, and, above all, unique. People who love to learn for the sake of learning will be happiest here. Graduates go on to be very successful.

Categories Comments Campus Safety The south side of Chicago gets a bad rep, but here on campus we have the 2nd largest private police force in the world (after the pope). People that use common sense (don't walk alone at 2am) are safe.
Greek Life Many people Go Greek There are a good mix and they can be the hub of friday and saturday night parties.
Clubs and Activities Countless Intramural sports from football to card games 300+ clubs Definitely something for everyone.
Great for these types of students Hard workers Creative thinkers
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Scav- The biggest scavenger hunt in the world each spring. Humans vs. Zombies- nerf guns for protection against the undead O-Week- Orientation week for the first years: one of the best times i've had on campus. There are soooo many traditions
Bang for the buck About 50% get financial aid Sticker price might scare off some people The connections made and material learned at the school are second to none.
What to do for fun The city of Chicago is a quick train or bus ride away! In addition to all of the activities downtown, on campus there is something going on. Whether you're into fraternity parties, theatrical performances, or just hanging out in the house lounge, no one is ever bored here.
Food and Dining There are plenty of options at UC with 3 dining halls within a relatively close distance compared to other schools. The food is decent.
Dorm Life The housing system is probably a top 3 reason to come to this university. It provides an instant group of friends for even the shyest and will always provide you with a group to sit with at lunch or attend extracurricular activities.
Academic Rigor I would have never guessed how much work could come out of 3-4 classes a quarter. Know how to manage your time and you'll have plenty for socializing
Tips for prospective students Come in with an open mind. The core curriculum allows all students to experiment with classes and find things they might not have experienced in high school. Also, interact with as many people as possible. In a smaller, super diverse community you can often find reliable connections. Visit the campus. Many prospective student base their opinions on rumors that are easily demolished by a simple visit. Talking to current students will give you a better sense of the atmosphere
In three sentences The University of Chicago is not only a top school, but the conversations that take place on campus are incredible. Even if aren't a nerd, may basic conversations even about sports can turn into something intellectual.
