Great for these types of students

This school is great for: -Students wanting the college experience for not that much money. -Students looking for a small college for more one-on-one teaching.

    Tips for prospective students

You should: -Apply for financial aid and admission early. -Take a tour of the school. -Talk to the professors. -Check for your major.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Houston-Victoria is not at all expensive as other universities. You get the college experience you're searching for and you don't break the bank!

    Am enjoying being here

I am enjoying being here because of the simple fact that I am getting the college experience I've always wanted. I wanted to leave home, not because I hated home, but because I wanted to see what it was all about. And they have brand-new dorms!

    Am learning a lot

The professors here are very nice and helpful to all their students. They try to work with the students as much as possible to get them on the right track and to succeed in class.

Great for these types of students

Students who like a smaller school environment with a smaller student to teacher ratio.

    Bang for the buck

They have several scholarship programs and is basically the least expensive public university in Texas.

    Will enjoy being here

Everyone was very welcoming on my campus visit. The tour was very helpful and sealed the deal with my wanting to attend there. Jaguar Hall is a converted hotel and has a lot of services & activities.

    Will learn a lot

They have several majors in my interest area. Like the idea that there is more face-to-face interaction with the professors.

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is low and the university offers a lot of scholarships

    Am enjoying being here

Everyone is very helpful and nice.

    Am learning a lot

The classes are small so there's a lot of student teacher time.

    Bang for the buck

For the tuition cost, UHV is a great choice.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the professor, classes can be somewhat daunting or rather easy. Because I take online classes, there really isn't a choice in which professor I get for a certain class.

    Tips for prospective students

Start your financial aid process early. If you wait too long, it can go past the payment deadline date and then you will have to take out a loan to pay for your classes until the financial aid comes through.

    In three sentences

As with any university, you have good professors and those who are less than stellar. My classes are all online and sometimes the selection of online classes is limited. However, UHV is generally a really good school.

    What to do for fun

There is a mall, two bowling alleys, mini putt-putt, a movie theatre, boot fest, lots of bars/clubs for those of age, and the beach is only about 45 minutes away.

    Food and Dining

The cafateria food at the dorm was always good! But if It wasn't there is a DQ, Mcdonalds, Whataburger, Sonic, and Wendy's in a 5 mile radius. Also, with your jaguar card you get discounts at most of these places.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life was okay, there's always something to do. They have poppin' Mondays, movie nights' etc. They also bbq at the dorms every friday and are in the process of making a pool. The computer labs are very convenient and are open 24 hours. The dorm is really secure and the security will even escort you to the dorm! The only bad thing is that the rooms don't have kitchens or living rooms.

    Academic Rigor

The professors are very helpful, most of them do have really hard assigments, but they do so to really see who is trying in class which has helped me alot. The tutoring is amazing and the tutors really kmow what they're talking about.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to get your financial aid in ASAP because they award by who turns it in earliest. Also, if you are leasing a dorm, don't wait to the last minute.

    In three sentences

UHV is a great college pretty much for anyone because it is low cost, has flexible schedules, and professors who will do anything to help you. The dorms were okay, but this past year they really improved and their cafeteria has really great food. Lastly, UHV is also a smaller school so the financial aid office is easier to reach, there's more one-on-one time with professors and they're alot of opportunities to start your own club or organization.

    Dorm Life

They recently built dorms and welcome the first batch of freshmen in Victoria.

    Academic Rigor

UHV has a lot of great teachers who will help you out every step of the way.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to attend some face-to-face and some online classes as well. If you are in a satellite campus, try to get some organizations going.

    In three sentences

UHV is inexpensive, has great programs, and has very flexible programs that are offered in Katy, Victoria, Cinco Ranch and Online.

    Clubs and Activities

Kappa Delta Pi is an amazing honor society and does great things for the community. I recommend joining as soon as you can, if your grades allow you to.

    What to do for fun

Join clubs to help the community, make great friends and inspire others.

    Food and Dining

The campus I attend does not have a dining hall however, it is supplied with vending machines and on occasion the staff supplies food for the students.

    Dorm Life

    Does not apply to me.

    Academic Rigor

University of Houston-Victoria, I found, is well-equipped to serve the students and help them in the venture to earn a degree. There are computer labs, vending machines, quite places to study and the school is always clean.

    Tips for prospective students

Be on time if not early to your classes. Come prepared with supplies and study hard.

Security is around the campus during learning hours and at the dorms 24/7. They're really nice and friendly.

    Greek Life

    No greek life.

Great for these types of students

Students that enjoy learning but are not into attending a large university.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Jaguar Journey is the required freshmen orientation. Its alot of fun and not only does it help familiarize you with the campus but it also helps you meet new people. Pyramid Row is where most of the activities take on place on campus. Jag Cage where all the soccer games are held.

    What to do for fun

Victoria is a small city so there isnt much to do. But that all depends on you and your friends. Most students go to the night clubs, the mall, the movies or bowling alley. Port Lavaca is about 30 minutes away so you can always take a trip to the beach.

    Food and Dining

The food is good occasionally, but very convenient because the cafeteria is located in the dorms.

    Dorm Life

The RAs are cool, and they try to give you all kinds of activities to do so that they can minimize boredom or stress about school. The dorms are also a great place to study and build amazing friendships with others.

    Academic Rigor

Its not to hard to where you will constantly struggle but you have to be willing to do the work or you will fall behind.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't turn away from help. The school is just small enough to where of your teachers know who you are, they are willing to help if you just ask for it.

    In three sentences

The education here is great! The teachers and staff really work hard to make sure that you are successful. They make learning and attending the school fun.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety? Well they have rules about sending your orders to meet you in the lobby, but if you live downstairs outside then you didn't have to or if they went through the stairs outside upstairs then you didn't have to either. But every door you walk though you must use your Paw Pass.

    Clubs and Activities

I honestly don't know too much about what kind of clubs there are but I know there are some with the government class, the student life group, the R.A. I wouldn't consider that to be a club but it's something to do. You just have to look into it and you'll find one. It just isn't helpful that they don't make their clubs known.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The only sports they have available are soccer, baseball, and softball. All other sports are available if you take one course at Victoria College I found it unusual but hey it's worth a try. And the spot is the place to be during finals week, they give out free food!!

    Bang for the buck

My experience at UHV was not as I thought college should be, but maybe because it was too small of a town for me and I really didn't have anything to do but my school work. Make your first year fun and interesting, go join things you want to join. Make lots of friends and be nice to everyone even if they aren't to you.

    What to do for fun

What to do for fun? Well honestly, I did homework for fun. Since it was a really small town there isn't much, but if you do study groups with friends and make it fun. Or go to some of the events that the school holds for you, some of them last like 5 minutes like the paint party, but going to the foam party was SOOO much fun.

    Food and Dining

Food and dinning wasn't really great, there were some days that the food was really good but that was really rare. I hope they change their menu items and one thing for sure is that they always had pizza and it was not always great.

    Dorm Life

My dorm life wasn't such a great experience. They barely told you about any events; you had to be in the loop to hear about it. And also the R.A.'s seemed not to care too much about problems in the rooms. But if you make great friends and stay out of trouble you should have fun.

    Academic Rigor

All grading rubrics are different but all are the same with NO tolerance plagiarism. If you just study and keep on top of your work and what you have to do, your grades will be outstanding.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure that a small town is what you're looking for it's two hours away from San Antonio, and two hours away from Houston. Those were the main two cities that were mixed in, some Dallas and Austin. But be sure you take into consideration of this small town.

    In three sentences

The University is very small. UHV Professors are all different Sartain for English Comp. and McCue for biology would be some good choices. You have to keep busy in order to keep from getting bored since it is in such a small town.

    Food and Dining

There is no cafeteria or food that is available on campus (sugar land campus). However there are vending machines.

    Dorm Life

There aren't any dorms available to live in so I cannot rate this accurately. However there are multiple locations that you can take classes via ITV classes. It is very convenient.

    Academic Rigor

Classes have a lot of material to cover. The instructors do a great job of mapping out what needs to be covered and allowing leeway for any unexpected events. The classes also are thorough and have a lot of interesting things to learn.

    Tips for prospective students

Just study hard and have fun. Stressing out will affect how you learn and how much you learn. Have a positive attitude and ask questions.

    In three sentences

This university is full of opportunities and a vast environment filled with a diverse student body. Teachers are helpful and make timely responses to both request and needs. The class size is smaller than average so more availability of instructors to assist you.

Because it is such a small school, we don't have many problems on campus. Or off campus for that matter. This school is definitely a safe place.

    Greek Life

No Greek life to be found here. Keep Victoria Boring.

    Clubs and Activities

We don't have many clubs. There is a film club and a sorority group. But its not a real sorority. Activities come in a wide variety, if you want the dorms to plan an event all you have to do is put in a sugestion.

Great for these types of students

Students who want to know everyone that they attend school with. Want a communal type of living style. Or want overall to be closely connected to their school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The cage is a local attraction. It is the UHV soccer field, it doesn't look like much, but its always a fun place when games are going on.

    Bang for the buck

This is one of the most inexpensive colleges in the state. So you definitely get a good education without putting you in for years of paying off student loans.

    What to do for fun

Your RA will hold many planned activities for your wing. Such as foam parties, color runs, s'more cookouts, bounce houses, and carnivals. Attending the sporting events is always a good choice, the ladies soccer program is a good choice :).

    Food and Dining

Believe it or not the food isn't that bad. Except maybe on weekends...

    Dorm Life

Though it may be a little loud and rowdy, living in the dorms is a great way to make friends and create life long connections.

    Academic Rigor

Its not very hard to keep up as long as you attend class and do your work. The teachers are always there to help.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you keep yourself focused on your school work, sometimes other things can seem like more fun, but keep your goals in front of you.

    In three sentences

The University of Houston Victoria is a small school focused on a tight community between the students. The academic program offers a lot of activities such as the live reading from authors. This school is great for anyone who needs one on one instruction or want to be in close contact with their teachers and peers.

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

4 stars because no place is perfect, but UHV staff know how to come extremely close due to the attention they offer.

    Tips for prospective students

Become involved and college life will be extremely memorable. Take advantage of the availability of the staff (including advisers, financial aid assistance, etc.) because others do not receive as much attention as quick and as well as the students at UHV do.

    In three sentences

I would rate the University of Houston- Victoria as a 7 because the city of Victoria is not as grand as well as many adventurous sites to explore; however, the University itself is currently growing rapidly in terms of population. I enjoy the more intimate student to teacher relationships. There are no more than 40 in a classroom, allowing the students to receive more attention when needed.

    Academic Rigor

The University is very strict about their academics! You need to at least keep a 2.0 which is a 70 in order to continue going to the school which isn't bad at all.

The students will also get to know their grades in advance by the majority of the professors to see where they academically stand. Professors demonstrate order by providing students with a syllabus at the beginning of the semester which lists rules, expectations and assignments and tests that will have to be completed during the semester. Tips for prospective students

Classes are challenging but not impossible. Study hard and work hard and you will succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

Always have your syllabus handy. Be prepared for class. Do not arrive late and do not leave the class before it is over. Do the review for the class. Read the chapters necessary before arriving to class. Professors like to hear from students, in other words raise your hand and answer questions. Professors will know you better and be able to identify a face to a name on a roster.
