Great for these types of students

The University of Iowa is a great fit for anyone whether you're more gregarious or more shy and reserved. With all that Iowa has to offer, it makes it simple for students of all backgrounds and personalities to find something that appeals to them.

    Tips for prospective students

As a student coming into the University of Iowa, one important piece of advice I would follow is to get involved in a school activity or group whether it's something as big as Dance Marathon or a smaller club. Joining any group is a great opportunity to meet other students and become more involved.

    Bang for the buck

Being an out-of- state student, at first view the tuition seemed high. In comparison to other Big Ten schools, I found that for such a quality education, Iowa is ranked as one of the best deals. Iowa is a beautiful campus that is very well maintained, and Iowa City offers numerous entertainment opportunities involving local restaurants, theater and music performances, shopping, and hotels, all within walking distance from the campus. For students living on campus, the dorm facilities are exceptional. Not only did I find that the rooms are the most spacious out of the many schools I visited, but also that the bathrooms are very up to date and kept in great condition. The dorm halls and facilities are also very well cared for by both students and maintenance personnel. Dining centers at the University of Iowa are fantastic. So many different meal choices are offered on a regular basis, the dining facilities are kept very clean, and the employees are very friendly. Classroom buildings at the University of Iowa are equipped with the latest technological materials, providing students with an enhanced learning experience. Iowa is also great for students interested in the medical field, as “University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics [is] recognized as one of the best hospitals in the United States.”

    Am enjoying being here

Living in Illinois, I had many in-state school choices, but after visiting the Iowa campus, I felt that I belonged here. Not only did I feel completely welcomed and accepted by fellow classmates and upperclassmen, but the faculty as well. As a result of this, I have met so many wonderful people and have formed solid friendships. Iowa is a truly beautiful school and campus that provides their students with opportunities that I believe are the best in preparing you for your future. Students are not only encouraged to become involved with various academic groups or extracurricular activities, but Iowa does an excellent job of planning school sponsored events for students to engage with other students, helping you to feel like a Hawkeye from the beginning. True school spirit is clearly demonstrated and practiced at not only sporting events, but other functions such as Dance Marathon and Homecoming. There’s nothing better than attending a Big Ten football game on a Saturday morning at Kinnick Stadium – even if you’re not a sports fan. It’s true when they say It's great to be a Hawkeye.

    Am learning a lot

The faculty at the University of Iowa is very qualified and interacts well with their students to provide them with a great educational experience. In a school the size of Iowa, both discussion sections and lectures are the predominant forms of learning. With discussion sections being smaller, the more intimate setting makes for lively conversation and more individual attention. Lectures, on the other hand, are very large, with sometimes over 500 students in attendance. However, I have found it comforting to know that despite the class size, the professors are readily available via office hours, email, or directly after class. Professors challenge their students and have high expectations to help them be the best.

Great for these types of students

The University of Iowa is a great fit for anyone, in my opinion. Outgoing, extroverted students will appreciate the large size of the school while more introverted students would love the attentiveness of the faculty. Jocks will love the fact that Iowa is a Big Ten university and theater buffs will adore the productions put on by the University of Iowa and the opportunity to participate in these productions.

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend future students to participate in extracurricular activities provided by the University of Iowa. They are a great way to get away from the books and allow you to take a break from all of the studying that is required at college.

    Bang for the buck

The in-state tuition is one of the lowest in the state and many students migrate from the Chicagoland area to receive Iowa's out-of-state tuition. That says a lot, considering there are many great schools in Illinois. The quality of the education students receive at the University of Iowa is amazing, especially for students interested in health care fields. Access to a major research hospital (the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics) provides an excellent incentive to attend this school.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the University of Iowa and I would never take back my decision to attend school here. From football games to Kinnick stadium to theater performances at Hancher auditorium, there is always something for students to do in their free time. The university sponsors many events every week that students may attend free of charge, which is wonderful because everyone knows that college students are not swimming in cash. For example, during Homecoming 2008, the University of Iowa brought in the band Rooney and Chuck Berry to play after the pep rally. Being able to see the old and the new of music for free before a major football game was an amazing experience, and I expect the University of Iowa to continue exciting events such as this in the future.

    Am learning a lot

The faculty at the University of Iowa are extremely intent on their students learning excellent material that they will later apply to their future career. Despite the university being a large school in the Big Ten, the professors and teacher assistants are extremely driven to making sure you know what is going on in the class. Many professors hold office hours multiple times per week, which is great considering the fact that it may be difficult to ask questions in lectures that more than 400 students attend. Students are also able to contact their teachers via email, which I especially appreciate because the faculty responds extremely quickly. Overall, the education that I have received in my first year of college has been amazing and I cannot believe how much I have already learned.

Great for these types of students

The University of Iowa is a great place for students who like to party. Be warned, most students take academics very seriously. Just remember: study hard, then party hard.

    Tips for prospective students

Get your football season tickets and housing application in early. If you're a business student then definitely live on the East side of the river. Don't be afraid to try new things and meet new people.

    Bang for the buck

I'm a student that doesn't have a lot of money, Iowa's financial aid department really helped me out. While the out of state tuition might scare away some people, all the experiences and the Big-10 education is totally worth it. Iowa's a school that gives out a lot of money for those students who look for it. Use the university's website to look for scholarships to apply for.

    Am enjoying being here

I don't have enough good things to say about Iowa City. The university's campus is nestled right next to downtown which makes it very easy to go out and eat every once and a while. Iowa's parties and tailgating are awesome, better than any of my friend's school choices. If big parties aren't your thing, there's plenty of other things to do day in and day out. The only reason you can be bored in Iowa City is if you want to be bored.

    Am learning a lot

Iowa City is a fabulous learning environment. In my first semester, all of my professors were very knowledgeable in each of their respective fields. I feel that at Iowa classes and degree requirements are designed to enable students to actually learn class material instead of just cram for the grade.

Great for these types of students

The University of Iowa has some nationally top-ranked programs, so if those are something you are interested in I would definitely take a closer look at Iowa. This school is so diverse and anyone would fit in here as long as you are willing to be a Hawkeye for life!

    Tips for prospective students

Pick the school that you feel is right for you and that you have fallen in love with. It may seem like an impossible decision, but in the end you will know where you belong! Don't stress out too much and just enjoy your search for the perfect college for you.

    Bang for the buck

This university is a great deal for those from the state of Iowa. It is expensive for out-of-state students, but compared to other out-of-state schools Iowa is definitely one of the lower-priced. The education and experiences you will receive here are absolutely worth the money.

    Am enjoying being here

Moving to Iowa City was a much easier transition than I thought it would be. There is so much to get involved in on campus and so many people to meet, you can't help but to love being in this wonderful college town. I love that there is always something going on if I'm bored, or if I need to buckle down and study I can pick from numerous locations to sit at and bury my head in textbooks for hours. My experience here in my first three months of college has been absolutely great so far and I cannot wait for the next three years!

    Am learning a lot

There is so much to learn here! Between all of the possible courses to choose from and learning all the aspects of the campus and city you will never get bored. I have already learned so much and cannot wait to learn more! Iowa has some great top-rated programs and is a great place to be when looking for a strong education. Also, all the different opportunities other than schooling that are provided here can teach you so much about other things and about yourself. College is one huge learning experience and I am so glad that I am getting that experience here at Iowa.

Great for these types of students

We are the number one school for writers, so anyone interested in English would benefit from attending. That being said, there are many hipsters or intellectuals in this town; it seems to be losing it's reputation as a party school lately. However, students would benefit if they know how to work hard and play hard; that is a major part of attending a Big Ten University.

    Tips for prospective students

In order to avoid getting lost in the sheer number of students, there is a program pushed by the university called Pick One! This program encourages you to join a club within weeks of starting at the University so that a community base is established. It helped me significantly in finding people with similar interests.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Iowa is a little expensive for out of state attendees. However, they are better than most public universities at providing financial aid.

    Am enjoying being here

I found that I got to college and was able to fit in perfectly. Iowa City places a large emphasis on cultural activities; for example, I attended a weeklong reading of Anna Karenina one week and then saw an improv group in the next. Although there are people who will spend every weekend at the bars (which, in their own right, are entertaining), I found an equal amount of people who were excited to engage in intellectual debates. The town is a little smaller than what I'm used to, but everything is at your disposal and by the end of your first year, the Big Ten size of the University disappears as you start to recognize numerous people.

    Am learning a lot

The required General Education program has helped to broaden my horizons. For example, I was able to take a Judaism, Christianity, and Islam class which a regular business curriculum would never require. This general education course pushed me to explore my interests and I ended up declaring a minor in Religious Studies after this course. Although Big Ten schools are typically addressed regarding sports, these public universities have high academic standards and provide a fun and interesting learning environment.

Great for these types of students

Iowa is great for all students. The school has done a great job of making sure that any student can come and work and excel to be successful later in life.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Make sure you look over a map of the campus when you're choosing your residence hall preferences. You want to make sure that you don't choose a place to live in that is inconveniently located based on your needs or your lifestyle. 2. Keep an open mind when you go to college. You'll meet a lot of new people and they'll be just as nervous as you are. Don't just assume what a person is like from the first impression; get to know them to see what they're really like. 3. Kind of like what I said before, don't try too hard to meet people. Some people do that and they seem desperate or needy. That's a turnoff and isn't a very good way to start college. 4. Make sure you take everything you're going to need. Always double-check and triple-check just to be sure.

    Bang for the buck

One of the reasons why I chose Iowa, even as an out-of-state student was because of the cost. Although overall, it's still about $35000, that's still not bad compared to other public universities. Plus, they're pretty eager to hand out scholarships for all sorts of things. My GPA was pretty low but I still got a $6000 scholarship just for my ACT score so that was a pretty good deal. What more can I say? The campus is beautiful, the people are very friendly, there's a lot to do here, the academics are strong but not overwhelming, and it feels like a fairly small school even though it's home to over 40,000 students combined.

    Am enjoying being here

The University of Iowa has a beautiful campus and it definitely helps that a river flows between the two halves of the campus. Contrary to what most people might believe, the campus is actually quite hilly which is nice just because it's not as boring as having just a flat campus. Sometimes, when you're tired, you'll hate those hills but it's not enough of a pain to be a significant problem. In terms of campus size, considering how many students attend Iowa, it's surprising that it takes only about 20 minutes to walk from one side of the campus to the other. Before I chose Iowa, I was visiting other schools, and one school I visited took almost an hour just to get halfway across campus but that wasn't the case at all here. The faculty and the other students at school are also very friendly. Literally everyone is willing to help you out, whether you are lost or if you just want help on a homework problem, and this willingness to help extends all the way from the custodians working in the residence halls to the professors who will be giving you lectures. The weather, when nice, helps make the campus a beautiful place to live and study in. When it's cold though, it's REALLY cold. And I'm from Chicago - I would know! In terms of things to do outside of class, there's the usual things you would find in a college campus like recreation centers and clubs for things you're interested in. It's easy finding a party to go to, if you're that type of person. One surprising thing I found out was the absence of a movie theater in Iowa City. Not a huge problem, but you're gonna have to take a taxi to get to the nearest movie theater. There really isn't any mall or anything like that of significant size so you'll have to go somewhere else like Coralville for that. Oh yeah, and we take football very seriously. Iowa has always been a pretty strong football school but we're the best at wrestling.

    Am learning a lot

The professors and overall teaching faculty at the University of Iowa are extremely competent and are veterans in their respective fields. If you have a question, they will answer it. The pacing of the classes is not overwhelming but that doesn't allow for any slacking either. The depth students go into their work is also quite deep so that's one of the reasons why the pacing isn't too fast. Also, if you're interested in majoring in anything to do with writing or if you just have a heavy interest in writing fiction or nonfiction, Iowa is the school for you. The Iowa's Writer Workshop is the best writing school in the world. Amazing alumni, amazing reputation, etc. The Honors Program is actually quite rigorous so if you're worried you won't be challenged enough here, just apply to be in the Honors Program. There are horror stories out there... you've been warned!

    Tips for prospective students

Research your major, as well as many others. Be flexible and willing to try new things. Find some extracurricular activities or hobbies that will connect you to other students. Always practice your writing, even if you are not planning to be an English major. You will always need quality communication skills.

    Bang for the buck

I am an Iowa resident, so I feel like I am earning my education at a great value, but I cannot speak for the out-of-state students.

    Am enjoying being here

Iowa City is a great place for college students, and this is definitely due to the University. We have many local restaurants, coffee shops, and vintage clothing stores. Iowa City has a strong community, and this is reflected on campus.

    Am learning a lot

I am an English major, but The University of Iowa is flexible enough that I have enrolled in classes in theatre, letterpress, photography, philosophy, and more. I am always learning at the University, and a key theme developed in each of my classes is web-like thinking. I can connect an idea across classes, expanded my knowledge even further. I deducted a star because I would like to learn more of the mechanics of the English language, not just literary history and theory.

If you really love football then you'll love Iowa everyone here is in love with the football team. On game days people wake up at almost the break of dawn to start tailgating it's a really awesome experience tailgating and even better once you're watching the game in the stands of Kinnick Stadium. It's a good school if you like to party but also are serious about your schoolwork. But for the most part I feel like almost anyone can find their way at Iowa and will thoroughly enjoy it if you give it the chance.

    Tips for prospective students

Partying is a lot of fun but don't let it come before your schoolwork if you do then the next semester you'll be back home attending a local community college. Trust me you'll be kicking yourself if you let that happen.

    Bang for the buck

Somewhat expensive for out of state students like myself. But I would be paying around the same amount if I stayed instate and went to a school like University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign.

    Am enjoying being here

Most people are very friendly which is nice, the party scene is changing now that the bars are no longer an option for those under 21 but it's still a lot of fun. Classes aren't overly challenging but you still need to work to get good grades which is what I enjoy about it.

    Am learning a lot

For the most part the professors work at a good pace and are very helpful. If your professors aren't helpful then your TA's for your discussions are always there to help you out. If you're having trouble someone is always there to help you.

Those who would like a big school, and those who love making friends. There's a niche for everyone, and there are always other people with the same interests as you.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're considering joining a Living-Learning Community, do it. I thought about joining the Writer's Floor, but didn't, and I greatly regret it. My best friends live there, and it would be so much more fun to live on the same floor as all of them. Also, if you can find a Courses-In-Common to join when you're signing up for classes, join it, because they're awesome. It's so nice having someone to study with who's in other classes with you as well. It's much easier to make friends, as well.

    Bang for the buck

Yes, if you are an in-state student. In-state tuition is extremely low. Out-of-state tuition is comparable to other schools in the area. It's definitely worth the out-of-state tuition, since the programs at Iowa are among the best. In particular, the Creative Writing program is one of the best in the world.

    Am enjoying being here

I love being in Iowa City. There is a lot to do on the weekends, whether you drink or not. The school provides a lot of entertainment for those who don't drink, like free movies in the student union every weekend, and if you want to drink, that's also a possibility.

    Am learning a lot

I did not give the school 5 stars because a lot of the classes are taught by TAs, especially the introductory courses. However, the TA almost always knows what they are talking about.

Motivated; while there are some classes where you can skate by and not do any work, those are few and far between. Just because it's a state school doesn't mean that everything's going to be easy.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved with a student organization. Iowa's a big school and it's easy to feel lost in the crowd. Depending on what you get involved with (try for a smaller one, with 100 members or fewer, rather than an organization like S.T.A.T.), you could have a bunch of ready made friends. Depending on how social you are, a club or activity could make all the difference in how happy you are here. This is college; you're going to have to make your own opportunities, and joining an activity is a good way to start. Also, the minimum course load for Iowa is 12 hours/semester. If you want to graduate in four years, though, you need to average at 15 hours/semester.

    Bang for the buck

Iowa's tuition is (comparatively) rather low, both for in state and out of state students. Considering what a great school it is, it's a pretty great deal.

    Am enjoying being here

I really love it here. The campus is beautiful, the professors are wonderful, and Iowa City is adorable. And if you're thinking about English, like I was, Iowa City was recently names a UNESCO City of Literature. Considering that there are only five, that's kind of a big deal. The student body is friendly--I've had twenty minute conversations with people I didn't know just because we were in the same place at the same time--and overall, Iowa is just a wonderful place to be.

    Academic Rigor

Iowa has a lot of great professors and, because it's such a large school, has a lot of courses for every level of student in most areas. There are a number of classes taught by TAs, where you never even see a professor, but the TAs are usually very knowledgeable in their subjects. Both TAs and professors are very helpful and nice--I've had a professor stop a two hundred person lecture to answer one person's question.

The University of Iowa offers too many majors and programs to mention! You will most likely find what you're looking for here. It is well known for it's amazing medical school and health programs such as nursing and pharmacy. Also, engineering is huge here and students get the chance to explore the new engineering facilities. A brand new college of public health building is in construction and looks like a beautiful addition to campus as well. So students of all interests have many options and choices here at Iowa. GO HAWKS!!

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved!! It helps greatly with the college transition you will be making. There are so many different clubs and organizations to join on campus that it's almost impossible to just pick one! You will be guaranteed to meet new people, be able to do fun things and plan fun events for the entire campus! Also, go to games, sporting events, and arts performances. Hawkeye football is something no one can miss!

    Bang for the buck

Since I am out of state the tuition is quite high for me. I do know that in the future, the education that I get from the University of Iowa will be worth that high tuition! However, they do offer many scholarships and the financial aid office will gladly meet with you to discuss your options and help you with paying tuition. It is at a great price for in-state students.

    Am enjoying being here

After transferring here as a Junior from out of state I didn't know anyone, but because of all the events on campus, campus groups and organizations, as well as the downtown/nightlife I was able to meet people and make new friends right away. The classes I have taken were all taught by very nice and intelligent professors. The hospitals and clinics provide many great volunteer and internship opportunities for students in the health/medical fields.

    Am learning a lot

I just transferred here from a small WI university and from what I have learned here so far I finally decided on a career/major change. The professors here know what they're talking about and they're there to help you whenever you have questions. The professors and advisers are who encouraged me to make this career choice and stick it out! They're all great supporters and mentors and I have had a chance to experience many educational opportunities that I wouldn't have had the chance to at my WI university.

The Recreational Center is absolutely wonderful. I was never an athlete, but how can you not take advantage of it! A membership to the Rec is included in your tuition and if you're athletic you won't be able to resist going.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! There are options here for everyone! My personal favorite is Dance Marathon. Dance Marathon helps to raise money for children with cancer at the U of I hospitals. There is and event that last 24 hours where every dances (yes, for 24 hours) to help fight cancer!

    Bang for the buck

Iowa tuition is significantly less than private schools and is similar in price to the other Universities in Iowa. A great price for an amazing college education and an amazing college experience :)

    Am enjoying being here

I live in Iowa so the University of Iowa was close to home, but still far enough away. The campus at the U of I feels like a home because it is intermixed with downtown Iowa CIty instead a college campus that I was trapped in. I was worried about the time it would take me to get to class, but for me, it is a 10 minute walk tops. I've made so many friends here, especially in my hallway in Burge Hall. These girls will be in my life for a very long time. Whoever said High School is the best time of you'r life was lying.. college is!

    Am learning a lot

I was always told that my classes at the University of Iowa would be too large and it would be too much for me to handle. All of my discussions are between 20 and 30 people with the exception of my lecture. For example, I have a large math lecture Tuesdays and Thursdays with a couple hundred people and on Mondays and Wednesdays everyone breaks into smaller discussion sections, and that is where teachers assistants get more in depth and answer questions.

Honestly, I couldn't ask for anything else from the University of Iowa. Knowing students who are paying $60,000 a year to attend other higher ranked schools I think they are crazy for missing out on this incredible opportunity!

The chances I have had at the Unversity of Iowa are remarkable. All within in the first year I have had the opportunity to plan events, volunteer, try tight rope walking, sit down and watch a movie with President Mason, and travel to Washington D.C. with Mock Trial to compete against schools like Harvard and Yale. The location is great and central and you are able to walk to anything you could need. It is a great community, no family to be apart of. Every time I see a Hawkeye I am proud to be a part of them.

    Am learning a lot

The educational opportunities at the University of Iowa are boundless, whether you pick one of their countless majors or make up one of your own working with their great academic advising committee! Come to classes with top notch professors who write their own materials and hold various degrees and already have patents and who run national studies making breakthroughs everyday! Experience unique chances to do research in the labs or learning over at the renown University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics!

Definitely visit the campus. It is beautiful and very incorporated with Iowa City, so there is plenty to do. Also, the dorm rooms are huge! The way I decided on Iowa was by making a pro and con list of each of my schools. It helps a lot to narrow down the list.

    Bang for the buck

Being out of state, I still feel that this school is very affordable. In fact, many in-state schools cost much more to attend. Granted, I did receive scholarship money, but with or without it, I think attending the University of Iowa will be worth the cost.

    Will enjoy being here

With anything, it is what you make of it. If you are convinced you will have a bad time, then you will not enjoy your experience. But, if you get active and engage yourself in activities, you will have a fabulous time. Everyone has the chance to get involved, as this school has so many activities.

    Will learn a lot

From what I have seen and heard about this university, I feel I will get a phenomenal education. I will be enrolled in honors, but I feel that with or without the honors classes, every student here has wonderful opportunities.

Great for these types of students

If you love being involved and going to athletic events this is your kind of school!

    Tips for prospective students

Iowa is so much fun, but you need to know how much you should study! Do not go by with how many hours you study. You need to go by how much you are prepared! If you are not prepared for a test it will catch up to you!

    Bang for the buck

I would know if it is worth it to go here! I pay out of state tuition! I am currently taking out loans, and have a tiny scholarship from high school! My parents are not helping with tuition at all! I love it though and I feel that it is worth it for the fun and what I am learning!

    Am enjoying being here

Iowa is so much fun! Getting involved is so easy! The football games are personally my favorite part! You tailgate and meet so many new people! Cheering on Iowa is so much fun, its like you are a huge part of the team!

    Am learning a lot

I feel in high school, there was always so much more I thought I should know. When going into my Freshmen year I was signed up for Calculus. I am horrible at math and was so nervous. The first day of class I was lost, I felt everyone was so much more prepared! I talked to my professor and he was so helpful! I ended up getting a pretty descent grade and learned a lot. This is just one of the many examples of how much I am learning!

Literally any type of student! From bookworm to party rock star. There is a place for EVERYONE on campus. It's impossible to not find your place unless you're avoiding finding it!

    Tips for prospective students

Join an organization or club. It's pretty easy to fall into the party routine at Iowa. (I had a lot of friends that NEVER partied in high school and came to Iowa and decided partying was for them.) But if you join something, you'll be having fun without being in a bad environment. And if you want to party a little still, you can!

    Bang for the buck

Like I said before, THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO! There are ton of opportunities for quite literally everything. There's so many clubs and organizations. Also, the University has many scholarships you can apply for.

    Am enjoying being here

There is so much to do! Everyone can find there place on campus. I love the city and the people I am around. It's easy to make the campus feel like home.

    Am learning a lot

There is endless support from U of I staff. If you need help with something, you can definitely easily find it! The professors and TAs know what they are talking about and generally really care if you're learning the material or not.

    Tips for prospective students

    Bang for the buck

It is the best priced Big Ten school, but it's still very expensive.

Most of the teachers clearly love to teach their subjects, which makes it much easier to learn. The great thing about college is that, for the most part, you can take classes that really interest you, which also helps learning.

    Campus Safety

hawk alerts are sent out if anything happens on campus and people are notified right away. although there have been a few incidents, the university handled it very well.

    Greek Life

sororities and fraternities can be fun but be aware that they have a very bad reputation here. be careful with what values they proclaim to hold to and what everyone else associates them with.

    Clubs and Activities

unlimited clubs and activities for everything and at different levels. but don't try to do everything because you can't.

Great for these types of students

this college is great for people who want to get out in the real world and try new things. especially if you want to try a fun minor or try a new language, the university of iowa could be the right place.

    Bang for the buck

the university of iowa, especially for housing, gets pretty pricey. but they do have more programs than most colleges and they specialize in a lot of stuff from medicine to languages.

    What to do for fun

there are always lots of programs planned through the college for students to do. no one ever has to be bored! from movies and raves to tie-dying and planting, you never run out of things to do. be sure not to miss out on all the activities going on.

    Food and Dining

there are great places to eat but you will have to pay for it. cafeteria food is alright but it gets old pretty quick.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is loads of fun but it is very expensive. also be ready to share bathrooms. don't fall into unhealthy habits with the buffet style of the cafeteria. take advantage of the healthy eating options and the wonderful fitness centers.

    Academic Rigor

most courses, especially ones pertaining to a particular major, are made to challenge students. gen eds can be a little easier but are a well deserved break. language courses can be super intense.

    Tips for prospective students

check out if your books are cheaper online ahead of time to save money! some books are available for free from one of the many libraries on campus. make the time to go to office hours and if they don't fit into your schedule, don't be afraid to email your professor or ta to ask if another time could work.

    In three sentences

the university of iowa has a wide array of programs to fit almost anyone's profile. although it is a bit pricey, there are many opportunities to try new things and learn about the world. be aware that you must be able to survive a large college where you have to be independent.

    What to do for fun

University of Iowa is known as a huge party school but there is way more than just that. There are famous comedians that come once a month (Keenan Thompson, Joel McHale, BJ Novak to name a few). They also have movies showing each weekend that just came out of theaters and aren't on DVD yet for only 2 dollars! Night games is another once a month thing that includes volleyball/dodgeball tournaments and fun for everyone!

    Food and Dining

The cafeterias here provide a ton of different options each day. It is super convenient for everyone living in the dorms as there is one cafe on each side of campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are much bigger here than any other college I looked at. Not only that, but the communities you build in your dorm will last you through college and even beyond.

    Academic Rigor

The courses here are challenging as with most Big Ten schools. However, if you put forth effort there is no reason that you won't succeed. Don't slack off!

    Tips for prospective students

Definitley have University of Iowa on your list of colleges to view. It is a nation-wide known university and people come from all over the world to attend here. I can't even describe how amazing this school it is, you really have to see it for yourself.

    In three sentences

The education is top-notch here at U of Iowa. The campus is beautiful and it's a Big Ten school with a small school feeling. At University of Iowa you will really feel like it's your home away from home.

    Clubs and Activities

I am a current member of the Women's Resource and Action Center and I write for the Daily Iowan. I have also participated in Dance Marathon which raises millions each year for Children's cancer research. There is a club for just about anything in which you could be interested, and I definitely encourage everyone to get involved.

Great for these types of students

The University of Iowa is especially excellent for students who are creative and enjoy writing and challenging their own opinions. There are a lot of opportunities for thoughtful discussion and dispute, and you can really learn a lot of information that might challenge your current belief systems. College is all about learning.

    Dorm Life

The University of Iowa offers a lot of scholarships and work-study programs to help you pay for school. With tuition and everything included, we have some of the best professors, international studies programs, and campus organizations around. We have a beautiful campus, an awesome recreation center, student health services, and supporting staff. All things considered, I feel like U of I gives me plenty of opportunities to excel and is well worth the money spent.

    Academic Rigor

I lead a bike touring group, which is really fun and you should look into if you come to the U of I. There are always concerts, comedy shows, different community activities and movies playing on campus. Pay attention to fliers around town because a lot of shows are free or discounted for students and John Oliver (of the Daily Show) was one of the funniest shows I've seen this year. The friends you make will help your time be more fun, even when there isn't a campus-wide event going on. Iowa City is never boring.

    Tips for prospective students

The dorms are enormous, but there are always activities that help you meet people and have a good time. Don't live in Burge because it always smells like food, but otherwise they are clean and always busy. Dorm life is good and can accommodate almost anything you want weather it's to exercise, to socialize, to eat, or to actually study.

    In three sentences

This is a very large campus so it is definitely in your best interest to get involved in an extra-curricular activity, especially your first year. This allows you to start building a resume, making contacts, and most importantly helps you meet people who will end up being your friends the next four years. In such large classes on campus, it's easy to feel lost, so get involved and you'll find you know more and more people in your classes, which makes them much more enjoyable.

    Campus Safety

The university views safety as a top priority. A phone lead systems informs students when there is a potential hazard or threat on campus such as, weapons, robbery, weather, etc . . .

    Greek Life

I personally do not participate in the Greek Life but am highly aware of large amount of fraternities and sororities that all have the opportunity to be a part of.

    Clubs and Activities

As said before the amount of activities are limitless along with that are clubs. If you have a hobby there is more than likely a club consisting of students with your same interest. These clubs and activities also gives students a chance to meet new people and make new friends.

Great for these types of students

The university is an amazing school for students looking to pursue a career in the medical/health field. The school has its own hospital where the students will get a hands on experience in the field. The school is also rated one of the top in the nation for medicine.

    Bang for the buck

As far as money is concerned every college is highly over priced, but compared to other schools, the price is reasonable and in long-term entirely worth it due to the career opportunity one will pursue.

    What to do for fun

There are an infinite amount of fun activities to participate in at the University of Iowa. The Hawkeye football games are one of my favorite activities. Along with that their are also many intermurals one can participate in. The university also host numerous events such as shows, concerts, etc . . . which provide students with many opportunities to take a break from study and relax and relieve stress.

    Food and Dining

Again, since I did not live in a dorm I am not familiar with the food and dining involved with them, but being on your own it is important to maintain a well balanced diet consisting of healthy and nutritional foods. Try to limit the amount of junk food consumed. This, unfortunately, is difficult to do being surrounded by delicious restaurants that do not necessarily have to most healthy foods.

    Dorm Life

I personally did not live in a dorm my first year of college. I did get the opportunity to spend time with friends at their dorms and found it very enjoyable.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Iowa is not an easily graduated school. In order to be a graduate you must put forth a great deal of effort and dedication. One willing to put the time and effort in necessary to do well is prone to succeed with flying colors.

    Tips for prospective students

The university is an outstanding place for a student looking to pursue any sort of career that the university offers. The advising and career center will aid in your path to that career to the fullest.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa provides students with a great learning atmosphere consisting of a large campus, beautiful scenery, spectacular professors, and fun and exciting place to live. With an infinite amount of courses offered at the University, the school provides students with the opportunity to pursue a countless amount of professions and careers with a tremendous advising staff to aid in ones path to a job or career. All in all, the University of Iowa is among the most enjoyable and beneficial experiences one could become a part of by attending the university.

    Campus Safety

Like every public school it is very safe. Iowa City is a good place, low crime, danger, etc.

    Clubs and Activities

Has a lot of clubs and activities but that is normal for a large state school.

    Bang for the buck

Great for those looking into medecine or statistics; if considering engineering you should consider the other state school in Iowa, Iowa State University.

    What to do for fun

I heard this is a party school which might appeal to some, but definitely puts me off.

    Academic Rigor

A joke in my high school calc class is that we have all the smart kids on the right side of the room going to ISU and all the struggling kids on the left going to University of Iowa. So from what I've heard looking at academics this school isn't that impressive.

    Campus Safety

There were a couple incidents in the downtown that campus security alerted all students about while I was there. There were however, security guards in my dormitory checking the hallways every night. Also, there were security poles all over campus that could be used in case of any emergency.

    Greek Life

There was a small aspect of Greek Life on campus, but it didn't over-rule the other campus groups as far as dominance goes. It definitely was something some people were very proud to be a part of, but not something one would have to join in order to prove their social standing.

    Clubs and Activities

    Too many to choose from.

Great for these types of students

    Friendly, outgoing, sociable, activity-oriented.

    Bang for the buck

For me, this didn't seem like the most academic-worthy place to attend college, but as far as the array/variety of events and friendliness of people went, this school was a great one.

    What to do for fun

Downtown is right next to campus, so there's never a shortage of activities to do there. The campus itself has an activity board, CAB which will host a variety of movies, events, comedians, walks or runs, and various campus group meetings (usually all hosted in the campus' IMU). During good weather, there were always games going on in the park or grassy areas, and sports is a pretty big deal at Iowa so there was constantly at least one sport event you could attend. There are art and history museums right on campus, and there is a large city library located right in downtown. This campus is meant for fun.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall hours didn't work well with my class schedule, but I took some early morning and late evening classes. The food itself was always really good- different options for all kinds of different people, and always a lot of serving attendants to help you if needed.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life worked out really well. Some nights were noisy, but I chalked that up to an average college experience. But again, be prepared to participate, as the RA's are very activity-oriented.

    Academic Rigor

The classes I took were good, but having an appointment with my teachers did not always work in my favor. These teachers work with thousands of students every semester and have very limited time with individual students. If you were previously a student who needed one-on-one teacher advising, be prepared to have it on a very limited basis.

    Tips for prospective students

Be VERY sociable-if you're a wallflower or one that enjoys quietly reading in the library, you will be in for a much different experience. Also, make sure you enjoy being a Hawk. There is very little room for the students who are not die-hard fans; wearing Hawkeye gear on campus is almost a staple for all students.

    In three sentences

This is a large school with many students who enjoy the extra-curricular activities more than actually studying. If you enjoy a very friendly yet carefree environment, this would be the school for you. The classes I took were challenging (when there were enough students to make the class worthwhile); this school just wasn't the correct choice for me.

At the University of Iowa, Greek Life is very big on campus. There are an enormous amount of sororities and fraternities to choose from, so a student can find the right fit for him/her. They help socially incline a student, while also focusing on school work and volunteer.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many options to choose from at the University of Iowa: division 1 sports, recreational, volunteer, or just for fun. There is every type of club or activity available and if it is not then a student can make their own.

Great for these types of students

It is great for big city of small town students. The campus is big enough to feel like you are at a Big Ten College, but it is also one of the smallest Big Ten.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

At football games we rattle are keys and take off our shoes when it is time for kick-off. Everybody also hangs out on the grass in front of the Old Capitol because it is so peaceful, beautiful, and nice.

    Bang for the buck

The academic and social opportunities are endless. You get your moneys worth in your classes, Greek life, dorm life, dining halls, and also any extracurriculars provided.

    What to do for fun

On the University of Iowa's campus, Iowa City is located across from campus. There are many restaurants, bars, shops, a museum, mall, and also the rec center.

    Food and Dining

There are 2 dining halls for each side of campus that are very big and have a wide variety. If you are vegan, very healthy, love to snack, it all will suit you, plus it is served buffet style so you get your moneys worth every time.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at University of Iowa are very nice and all fairly close to campus. There are many different types of dorming including, apartment style, so it is nice to dorm at University of Iowa. They also have work out centers in some, dining halls in 2, laundry facilities in all and also lounges.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are very tough at the University of Iowa. There graduate school has many country wide and nation wide known programs, so be prepared.

    Tips for prospective students

Study 2 hours out side of class for every one hour in class and be prepared for your classes. Also, make sure you dress for the weather, hot can get hot and cold is very cold.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa is a beautiful, culturally rich, and an easily accessible campus. The education one can receive at this college is unlike any other along with the memories to go with it.

    Campus Safety

The campus at Iowa is extremely safe! There are emergency call towers that can be pressed if you are walking home alone and feel unsafe. Also the campus police are always out so there is never a time to feel unsafe.

    Greek Life

The greek life on campus is getting bigger as the years pass and it is such a fun experience to be a part of. Joining greek life not only introduces you to a bunch of people just like yourself, but it also gives different leadership opportunities and volunteering opportunities.

Also there are workout programs everyday all day that anyone can participate in. Different organizations hold concerts and blood drives that make the college experience that much better.

    Food and Dining

    Academic Rigor

The academics at The University of Iowa are very challenging. By using your time wisely and studying, the hardship of the work will come easy. There also is a lot of tutoring opportunities if needed.

Great for these types of students

Motivated - Iowa has some very difficult programs and in order to be successful, you have to be ready to give it your all. Fun-loving - Although it is school, Iowa students (and fans) know how to have a good time. Game day Iowa City is awesome, full of fans, food and a grand time! Kinnick Stadium is the best place on earth, so if you're looking for a great sports team to be proud of and cheer for.. you're looking at the right place! I think that Iowa has so many things to offer - there is something here for everyone, whether it be game day fun or an extensive array of classes ranging from GarageBand to the Beatles to Organic Chemistry or Vector Calculus.

    Tips for prospective students

There are two things I would say to a prospective student not only at Iowa, but anywhere. The first is of course so overused, but very true. GET INVOLVED! At Iowa, there are million and one things to get involved in. Sure, sitting at home playing video games may sound like fun, but college is about finding the people that you are going to share the rest of your life with, be that a relationship or a tight-knit group of friends. When I got here, I over involved myself, once I realized that I was stretching myself too thin, I took a step back and decided what I really wanted to do. I chose the Hawkeye Marching Band and the professional engineering fraternity here on campus, Theta Tau. Being involved in these two groups has certainly changed my college career. I currently live with a friend that I met in band and as well as being very close to her, I have a close-knit group of engineering friends to pull all-nighters with during finals week! Being involved truly made the transition to college easier. I know it sounds cliche, but it is truly important. The other piece of advice I would offer is to be sure that you focus on the important things. I know that I said get involved before, but make sure that you keep your eye on the prize- GRADUATION! You are here for an education, most students aren't paying thousands of dollars to party! It is fun to go out with the friends you make (by being involved!), but it also necessary to surround yourself with people that can help you achieve your goals in college and your goals for the future. Of course, I have to add HAVE FUN! Have fun learning, have fun meeting friends and discovering the wonderful world of college!

    Bang for the buck

I won't lie, Iowa is expensive; but so are other schools. Being out-of-state, tuition is pretty demanding as compared to being an in-state student. On that note, it is also on the less expensive end of out-of-state tuition, as far as attending a four-year university goes. I am getting a quality education, and I know that once I graduate, my degree will pay off, but make sure to dig deep for scholarships or grants before taking out those interest heavy loans. I keep thinking about all my friends that are graduating and getting wonderful jobs, and that keeps me going through my loan payments. You can totally afford Iowa as an out-of-state student, just make you look closely at all your options

    Am enjoying being here

I truly am enjoying my time at Iowa, and I'm sure that if you decide that Iowa is for you, you will too. The university offers countless ways to get involved with other students and people around you. From clubs to intramural sports, it offers all the great features of attending a large university. Iowa also brings in many different types of people which makes getting to know others a lot of fun. I have met people that came from my suburb of Chicago to a friend that was born and raised in Alaska. As I'm sure every soon-to-be college student is wondering, the Iowa social scene is just as fun as you've heard. There is always something going on downtown Iowa City, no matter what you feel like doing whether that be go to a bar, or just stroll and attend art and book street fairs. I certainly am having a great time at Iowa, and even after being here two years, am still discovering new things to do.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently pursuing a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as minors in Mathematics and Computer Science. I can honestly say that I was very surprised when I came to Iowa for engineering. In a good way! As you may have guessed, engineering is not the simplest major in the books. It requires a lot of time, effort, academic proficiency and most importantly, patience. Although engineering may not seem like a fun major, Iowa makes it fun. I have met so many wonderful engineering students, as well as other students, at Iowa that I now consider my closest friends. For the most part, the classes are fun and the professors and assistants make them interactive in a way which makes learning (and understanding) fun. I won't sugar-coat it and say that class is always fun, or that you will always want to go; but the days of sitting in ridiculously boring lectures have morphed into fun learning sessions in which you frequently use hand-held devices to answer questions on the board or race a classmate to figure out an answer. School will always be school, but Iowa has made a point to make school fun and interesting for it's students.

Great for these types of students

Anyone. There are Big Ten sports and an honors program, parties and people who do not drink, and there are 30,000 students. You are very likely to fit in with someone with that big of a number.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved. If you don't feel connected to the school, you won't like it and you will want to go home, or miss high school, or want to leave. When you are busy having fun, you forget about that stuff and just enjoy college. It's so much fun!

    Bang for the buck

It is kind of expensive, especially if you're from out of state like me, but I think that it's worth it. I would probably be able to adjust wherever I ended up choosing to go, but I really feel like I made the right choice by coming here, even though it was more expensive. Take all the classes you can to get that bang for your buck and take advantage of the free things they offer-there are a lot! And we have to pay a fee for the new rec center, so I would recommend actually going there and utilizing it. It's extremely nice, and there's an awesome rock climbing wall too. Apply for scholarships too; they help.

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here. There is always something going on, no matter what you feel like doing. I've met some awesome people since I've been here and joined activities that make me feel like I belong on campus. I have a close group of friends who live in my dorm and a group of girls from the rowing team as well.

    Am learning a lot

I do feel like I am learning a lot here, and my classes seem to be very interconnected. I never would have thought that chemistry, philosophy, psychology, and rhetoric would influence each other but we discuss similar things in all the classes at times. The professors or graduate students are approachable and like it when students come in during their office hours. I can't wait to start taking classes in my major though, after these gen eds.

Great for these types of students

For those that like the small town feel and the ability for personalized attention during office hours.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't miss lectures, read the handouts/notes before and after class, go to office hours & tutoring, do the homework problems and practice exams.

    Bang for the buck

Definitely good quality for the price.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being around people with the same interests.

    Am learning a lot

With the online homework in some classes, there's instant feedback which helps you understand right away where you might have gone wrong and what you may need to work on.

    What to do for fun

go out on the weekends with friends, take a bus to the coralville mall, watch movies at the bijou theater, go to a university sponsored event, go to a sporting event, hang out downtown with friends.

    Food and Dining

the dining food is actually really good here, it may get a little repetitive (like all schools) but it's good food.

    Dorm Life

the dorms are pretty nice, the people that live here are great and they are close on campus that it's easy to get everywhere you need to. they are clean and they are big enough for two people to live in without feeling cramped.

    Academic Rigor

some of the courses are pretty hard, and some of them aren't as hard but all the classes have a lot of work and you have to put in a lot of time.

    Tips for prospective students

try and make a lot of friends! everyone here is so friendly it's hard not to have a bunch of friends. join a lot of clubs and events as well, there is so much to do here that you will never get bored, plus it will help you meet a bunch of people

    In three sentences

iowa is a great university, the professors here actually care about the students and making sure that they get the grades they're trying for. the other students here are very friendly, everyone here that i have met has gotten along. and also the town is a great place to live, it's really a town that revolves around the school.

    Campus Safety

i've never felt unsafe in iowa city. it's a college town, and you'll pretty much only see students walking around. they have night ride for girls, and any girl can call and the night ride bus will pick you up and drop you off near home.

    What to do for fun

iowa city is a bar town. everyone loves fac (friday after class) which is going to the bars on friday nights. they're cracking down on people under 21 though, who now have to leave the bars after 10pm. but don't fret! there are always a ton of house parties close to campus and some people join fraternities or sororities. and of course in the fall it's football season; the stadium is always filled and there's amazing tailgating outside the stadium every game with all the food you could eat and alcohol you can drink!

    Food and Dining

the food is good. there are two cafeterias, burge on the east side and hillcrest on the west side. they offer a lot of different cuisines and have vegan and vegetarian options as well. it's a bit pricey, though.

    Dorm Life

the dorms here vary quite a bit. there's apartment living in mayflower away from campus; there's burge the party dorm near campus and next to currier, stanley, and daum the honors dorm; and then on the west side of the river there's hillcrest, rienow, slater and quad. you're sure to make friends in the dorms and living anywhere besides mayflower isn't a bad walk to campus. if you don't want to walk because it's cold or you're feeling lazy, there's a free bus system open to everyone called the cambus that'll take you pretty much anywhere on campus you'd ever need to go.

    Academic Rigor

of course the rigor of any school is based on your major and how much effort you're willing to put in. if you want good grades, you need to work for them. u of i is a big school, but they provide students with a lot of resources in order to get help with classes through tas, student tutors, etc. it's not the toughest school in the world, but you definitely need to stay on top of things in order to do well.

    In three sentences

the university of iowa is located in the heart of iowa city where there's a ton of shops, restaurants, bars, and more. it's a spirited school that's dedicated to football, so bring your game face!

    Campus Safety

there is a bussing system called night ride that takes women to their dorm or apartment late at night (whether from the bars or from the library). also, there are poles with an emergency call button located in many places through out campus. all university buildings- such as dorms, the library, etc.- have rape whistles available that you can take to put on your keychain. there is both city and university police who patrol the area thoroughly, especially the later it gets at night.

    Greek Life

this is not a huge part of the university. you can definitely be involved and there are plenty of opportunities, however it is not as common as at other institutions.

    Clubs and Activities

something for everyone and everything! school clubs, organizations, groups. you can find anything.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

i think the best locations are the ped mall and the pentacrest. both are very unique to iowa city and offer great people watching locations. they are right on campus and a good place to rest between class or on a nice day.

    Bang for the buck

the tuition is expensive, but where isn't it? it is average. considering this, you get a great education. if you're willing to put in the time to get to know professors, this will really help. also, make sure you do the work and it will all be worth it.

    What to do for fun

the university again has awesome organizations and plenty of opportunities to get involved. there is also the ped mall which consists of iowa city exclusive shops and restaurants. it is very fun to people watch, shop, and get some good food. the athletics are also great and i have had some of the most fun at football and basketball games, along with other sports.

    Food and Dining

the dorm food is not known to be wonderful. however, you will always get full. both residence halls that use buffet style dining and offer a wide variety of items such italian, home cooked meals, sandwiches, salads, etc. you can definitely make it work.

    Dorm Life

the residence halls look to be a little old but accommodate your needs. there are bathrooms near where ever your room is and there are also lounges to do homework or hang out with the people on your floor. i had an awesome ra through my experience who did great hosting activities and bringing the floor together. that made the transition much easier.

    Academic Rigor

the classes can be challenging, especially dependent upon what you are studying. there is also help available during office hours and often, teachers are readily willing to respond to emails. make sure you take enough time to study and not get carried away with other things.

    Tips for prospective students

make sure to get to know your ta's and professors. although it is difficult, it is possible. this will make it much easier to understand and stay up to date with classes. also, when you find something you are really interested in, make sure you pursue it and become involved with the many groups that are in that field.

    In three sentences

the university has an eclectic campus that provides students with a variety of opportunities to join clubs and become actively involved with what interests them. the university is known for academic excellence in a variety of different fields. sometimes, it can be difficult to get into popular classes and because of the class size, it can be challenging to get the one on one time you may want or need with your professor.

    Food and Dining

the food is pretty average. some of it is of high quality and some is bad. there is a large variety though so it is easy to find something that you would like to eat.

    Dorm Life

overall the dorms here are fairly good. the size really depends on what dorm and type of room you apply for but all are comfortable to live in. the dorm bathrooms are cleaned on a daily basis by the cleaning staff so there is never a problem with cleanliness. i have had a good experience with my dorm life. everyone is very friendly and the staff and other floormates are always there to help if i need them.

    Academic Rigor

classes are challenging and most require quite a bit of work to be successful. there are many tutoring programs provided on campus, question and answer sessions with professors, and generally helpful professors though that make being academically successful an achievable goal. with hard work, and good usage of the academic help available on campus it is possible to succeed at the high academic standards of this university.

    Campus Safety

Iowa City is a pretty safe city and community. Like any other city, it is important to know your resources and have tools to keep yourself safe. There is a free service for women every night that will bring them to locations around Iowa City for free, there are emergency call stations located throughout the campus, Department of Public Safety officers walk through the dorms, and the Iowa City Police are prevalent on campus. There was also a recent program started on campus called Hawkeyes Watch for Hawkeyes, where students are reminded to look out for one another and help each other be safe.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is present on campus, though it is not something everyone needs to be a part of to feel a part of the university community. Our Greek Life provides students the opportunity to meet people with similar backgrounds and interests and do good within the community. If you do not choose to be a part of Greek Life, there are SO many other ways to meet people on campus, but Greeks help spread the Hawkeye spirit!

    Clubs and Activities

Do you enjoy Bass Fishing? There's a club for that. Do you enjoy reading and writing poetry? There are a lot of clubs for that. Are you a vegetarian? There's even a club for that. There are also organizations on campus dedicated to bringing entertainment to the campus and city, promoting human rights, and much more. There are also many community service organizations; this past year one of our student-ran organizations raised over $1.3 Million this past year for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital!

Great for these types of students

Any student can find their spot at Iowa. That's one of the great parts about being a Big 10 university. People really enjoy our gamedays, whether it's Football or Basketball. The amount of school spirit is amazing! In case athletics are not your thing, there really seems to be something for everyone.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The steps of the Old Capital are an unusual, but very popular, location on campus. People hang out by the steps to meet friends, spend time overlooking the campus, do some homework, or just relax. If you go up on the steps facing the west part of the campus, you can see the entire west side. It's a pretty great view.

    Bang for the buck

Though paying out-of-state tuition always proves challenging, getting a degree with which I can enter the workforce upon graduation makes tuition worth it. Tuition also pays for access to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center and helps fund many of the organizations on campus.

    What to do for fun

Many of the student organizations on campus offer activities on both weeknights and weekdays. You can go see current movies for $2, check out different concerts all over campus, attend a cultural event, or treat yourself to a nice dinner somewhere! There is ALWAYS something to do and be a part of!

    Food and Dining

You will NEVER be short of food in Iowa City. There are two dorms that provide on-campus dining, and there are so many restaurants in Iowa City. Students actually make it a goal to eat in every restaurant in the area before graduation, and very few students actually accomplish that goal. Delivery is an option for everything from pitas to sandwiches to cheap pizza to fine dining.

    Dorm Life

As a Resident Assistant, I have seen all sides of dorm life. People meet friends on their freshmen floors and stay best friends for the rest of their college careers. The dorms provide students with activities on weekends, and we strive to build positive communities within the dorm system.

    Academic Rigor

There is always work to be done at The University of Iowa. Academics are a priority on campus, and students strive to stick to the 4-Year Graduation Plan. Professors like to challenge us to think and analyze everything on deeper levels, and it is through those challenges I have learned the most.

    Tips for prospective students

Find several campus organizations you may be interested in and try them all out! You will never know what opportunities will allow you to meet the best friends you will ever have or learn something you will never forget. Take advantage of everything, even if it is outside of your comfort zone.

    In three sentences

University of Iowa provides students with opportunities to learn both in and out of the classroom. There are so many leadership and educational opportunities as well opportunities to interact with people of diverse backgrounds. The Hawkeye community is friendly, positive, and inspiring!

    Campus Safety

There are so many campus security guards around all the time, especially at night. There are certain keys that only students have in order to get into the dorms, which makes me feel really safe.

    Greek Life

Greek life is increasing here at the University of Iowa. This, again, is an awesome way to get really close with new people. Everyone that is a part of the Greek system absolutely loves it and recommends joining to everyone.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many intramural sports and clubs that are available for students to join; this is also another great way to meet new people and make friends.

    Bang for the buck

It is an expensive school, especially for out-of-state students like myself, but the education that you will receive here is unlike any other. The school pride that every student had is unlike anything I have ever seen before.

    What to do for fun

There are always activities being provided for the students by the dorm halls and RA's. Good opportunities to meet new people and get to know people in your dorm.

    Tips for prospective students

Balance your time going out and your time studying. Going out is a lot of fun, but it is much more important to make sure that all of you school work is done before.

    In three sentences

I absolutely love Iowa, I've made really great friends so far and have so much fun. Also, although it is a big school, the professors and teachers make the transition easy. There are many resources that can help to improve a student's GPA.

    What to do for fun

There's so much to do for anyone and everyone. Football is a big deal in Iowa City. We're a Big 10 school and thousands of people flock to the stadium on game day and even more watch at home. Tailgating and of course, the Hawkeye Marching Band, are always a highlight in the fall. In addition, there are a ton of activities offered on campus for people of all interests. There's a brand new recreation facility that has a rock climbing wall, swimmining pool, indoor track, and so many classes, including yoga and zumba. Also, a big event that happens every winter in Dance Marathon, which is a 24-hour event that raises money for those affected by cancer. Basically, no matter what you're into, there's something for you.

    Food and Dining

The downtown food is great! There are several restaurants located close to campus and they're perfect for grabbing a quick bite to eat or something fancier if you're in the mood. Something unique to Iowa City and Coralville is Which Wich, a sandwich shop. Be sure to try the Oatmeal Raisin cookies; they're my favorite!

    Dorm Life

As a transfer student, I've never lived in the dorms. But I've heard from friends who live in dorms that they're not bad. I do know that free bus routes run directly from most of the dorms to wherever you need to go on campus. This makes it easy to get around during those hot summer or cold winter days.

    Academic Rigor

Academics at the U of I are very reasonable. Usually, in those big lectures, it's helpful to get to know your TA, or Teacher's Assistant. These are graduate students that often grade your papers, tests, and award participation points in discussion sections. As a Communication Studies student, I feel that I have numerous resources to draw upon if I have a question. There are math and writing labs anyone can go to and recieve help.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know your advisor. They can give you valuable information about not only your major, but also what minors or certificates may best suit your unique personality and interests. Also, as a first year or transfer student, pick one activity that you have an interest in and that you genuinely want to do. For me, this was marching band. It was a great way to de-stress from studying and the front row seat in Kinnick Stadium didn't hurt either!

    In three sentences

The U of I is an exhilarating place to be. Between academics, extra-curricular activities, and of course, football game days at Kinnick, you won't be bored. I'm happy to be a Hawkeye!

The University of Iowa has everything. To find something you're interested in check out the IMU webpage. There you can log into OrgSync and check out all the student organizations there are to get involved in and what activities are going on. The IMU has a movie theater which provides $3 hit movies all the time. There are many large events like FryFest, Hawapalooza, Homecoming, Greek Week, and many more. The IMU often hosts concerts as well which are very popular. There is a Campus Activities Board (CAB) that plans tons of cool events and the organization really does a great job of reaching out to students to let them know about all the things they can do in their free time.

    Food and Dining

The cafeterias offer a lot of options so that while you may not have your favorite meal every day, there will always be something that you enjoy. A great place to go is to the River Room in the IMU for a step-up from dorm food and many more customizable options. The best food around however is not provided by the university, but found downtown at Givanni's, Atlas, Airliner, Hamburg Inn and many other small and local places.

    Dorm Life

I absolutely loved living in the dorms as a freshman. I was on a floor with all women and while I never got super close with any of them, I always felt respected and like I was included in whatever was going on around me. I always felt safe in my building and never experienced any issue. The residence halls also have individual programming so that you can meet and hang out with people in your building. These activities are always free of charge and super fun!

    Academic Rigor

College is meant to be a challenge and I am happy with the pace at which we move here. Some classes are certainly more difficult, but I have yet to experience anything unfair or unreasonable. Just remember, you're at college to study and learn, so that's what your professors will expect you're doing.

    Tips for prospective students

My best advice is to get involved! There are infinite possibilities here at Iowa and you should do all you can to take advantage of them. As a new student, I highly recommend the Career Center. They have so much to offer in terms of finding a personalized path through college that will help you get in direct contact with future employers and line you up for success all the way through college.

The University of Iowa has given me endless opportunities to succeed. I have had nothing but positive experiences with all my peers, professors and advisers. I am so proud to be a Hawkeye and know that what I do here makes a difference and will take me places in the future.

    Greek Life

The Greek life throughout the college is a good experience, but not for everyone. If the student decides to join the Greek life they participate in many volunteer opportunities and establish events in to raise money for the people in the community who need the money the most. They have many socials usually that occur on Thursday evenings where the members of the sorority and fraternity get to meet and establish relationships with them. It is a very fulfilling part of the University community and helps establish long-term relationships with peers.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a good variety of activities to participate in throughout the University as long as you try to participate and be an active member. The people who run the groups tend to be very committed to what they do and they want to strive for making and maintaining a healthy balance between school and leisure.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining vary differently depending on which side of the campus that you live in. On the west side of campus, the food and dining is know as having better quality, but not nearly as much variety as the dining hall on the east side of campus. The east side dining hall has a a lot of diversity within the food choices, but seems to lack the quality that the west side does. On the east side of campus, the place to eat is very large, but there is a lot more traffic with people coming in and out of the dining hall. While on the west side of the campus, the area to eat is not as big, but there seems to be less people that go to the dining hall.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is fulfilling in the aspect that you get to meet new people and participate in potential leadership opportunities. The people in the dorms are usually looking out for your safety as well as making sure that you are staying on the right track throughout the first year of college. The establish meal plan and the meetings within the dorm establish a since of responsibility as well as creating a routine in order to be successful. The dorm life is very pleasant which limits the amount of frustration and anxiety that sometimes occurs in the first semester of college.

    Academic Rigor

The academics for the University of Iowa are very difficult, and usually based on a curve so that all of the students have a fair chance in obtaining the grade that they desire. The teachers are very helpful and they try and make it so that the student completely understands the requirements for the course. There are many places on the campus that allows for places to study, and if the student decides to take advantage of these places, it will help them achieve their academic potential.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa is a great place that provides all of the necessary information in order to succeed throughout college. The school focuses on the particular interests of the students, and helps the students achieve their goals while giving them many opportunities to participate in extra curricular activities. The life inside as outside of the campus in Iowa City is friendly and welcoming, while providing a safe environment throughout the city.

    What to do for fun

The university is in the middle of Iowa City. There are great places to eat such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Chipotle, Pancheros and the Pizza Pit. Located in the Pentacrest, there are two museums that students and locals can visit (the Old Capitol Building and MacBride Hall). There are plenty of student organizations to get involved in.

    Food and Dining

There are two main dining halls, Burge and Hillcrest. Burge is located on the east side of campus, approximately three blocks from the Pentacrest. It is where I normally go to eat. Hillcrest is located on the west side of campus. It is near the field house and the College of Pharmacy. Both dining halls have a variety of dining options. They even have great dessert options.

I've never felt unsafe on campus. The police monitor the dorms and are just a call away if you need them. Also, for women at night, there's a service called Nite Ride that you can call and they will pick you up anywhere on campus and bring you back to your dorm. It is run by the University of Iowa police and is completely free and you have unlimited rides. For women and men, there's something called Safe Ride. With Safe Ride, you call the hotline and they pick you up from wherever and take you wherever you need in an emergency. They'll scan your ID, and you get one free ride per semester. If you have already used your free ride, you may have to pay.

    Bang for the buck

Iowa Book has 9 cent fountain pop on Fridays. Make sure you get one!

    What to do for fun

You might have heard that University of Iowa is a party school, but you don't have to party to have fun. My friends and I have done these things: hangout downtown and go to one of the many frozen yogurt places (Yotopia, Aspen Leaf, or Orange Leaf), eat at Molly's Cupcakes, just walk around for hours exploring and getting lost, check out one of the many concerts or music-related things going on, check out a cultural event, go door to door in the residence hall handing out candy and making friends, if you have a car go ice skating at the Coral Ridge mall.

    Food and Dining

The food here is actually quite decent for cafeteria food. It isn't my favorite (I'd much rather eat at Panchero's or Mesa downtown), but it's there and it's convenient. Definitely try out the Chef's specials that are made to order. They are the best things here!

    Dorm Life

I love living in the dorms! I'm living in a LLC (living learning community) this year, and I absolutely love it. All of my best friends live in the LLC and on my floor with me. We have floor-wide events and just hang out together and it's tons of fun! That being said, I don't have a kitchen in my dorm and I miss being able to bake cookies or cook dinner sometimes, but I'm working on my microwave foods cookbook. ;)

    Academic Rigor

I definitely am not being overloaded with things I'm not able to handle in my classes (especially since that's the way I set up my classes), but at the same time, my professors challenge me and I learn what I need to learn. It's definitely different than high school, you have to study more, but you have to do that at any college!

    Tips for prospective students

When you're looking for school's it may seem a bit pricey (especially if you're out of state like me), but scholarships definitely help! Apply for all the scholarships you can. University of Iowa also has one of the smallest out of state tuitions of all of the Big 10 schools.

    Campus Safety

Safety wherever you are is never going to be 100%, but the University of Iowa strives to make it as safe as possible for students. If you are a female, they offer a Nite-ride bus that will take you downtown and then home so you aren't walking at night. Campus police are seen everywhere you turn your head assisting in keeping students and the community safe.

    Clubs and Activities

There are never-ending amount of clubs you can join. Every major has a type of club you can join in order to assist you in volunteering, making your resume look good, and helping you succeed in your education. Watch your e-mails at the beginning of every semester.

Great for these types of students

Any type of student. No matter if you are alien, you fit right in when you're in Iowa City. The University of Iowa strives to have diversity on campus and when you stroll through downtown, you will quickly see diversity is exactly what they have.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Any of the bars in the pedestrian mall on the weekend are pretty darn fun when you take a group of friends.

    Bang for the buck

You get a great education with knowledgeable professors, the ability to workout for free, an organized University that wants to see you succeed, and never-ending things to do. The only bad thing is parking downtown or if you live in the dorms is not fun or worth it. Leave your cars at home.

    What to do for fun

There are so many things to do for fun in Iowa City, with everything being within walking distance or on the bus-line. The Coralridge mall is a few miles away with the ability to take the bus, many bars, pedestrian mall right in the middle of campus, restaurants, golf courses, museum of history, Kinnick stadium home games, and of course the random shenanigans of college students.

    Food and Dining

The food rocks! It's pretty much like a buffet everyday. If you don't like the University's food, there are more than enough places in walking distance to eat out everyday.

    Dorm Life

It's so much fun to meet everyone. If you don't like who you live with for whatever reason, it's simple to transfer to another area. Most of the time, your best friends become the people on your floor. It's fun to pull pranks on the people in your building too. :)

    Academic Rigor

Rigorous, but if you put in the hard work before going out to have fun, you will get the grades you want. The library and campus hours for almost everything are made for the college student's life and not a parents life where they close at 8pm.

    Tips for prospective students

If you have attended the U of I and leave and then come back, make sure you update your ISIS information because they keep all information (including bank account information, address, phone number) and don't ask you for an update so when it comes time for financial aid refund, it can become a huge pain. Luckily, everyone on the phones to call are very helpful.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa is a very organized school where times and dates are set and rarely changed, making it easy to prepare for classes and information. The REC center is free to students (built into your tuition) and right across from the library making it extremely convenient to work out and stay healthy along with studying. The Cambus can take you anywhere on campus if you don't want to walk. Tons of food chains you can walk to along with stores to shop at. It's never boring at the U of I in Iowa City!

Be sure to actually read your textbooks because they do help tremendously. Feel free to talk in person to your professor's before or after class, or e-mail them if you have any questions or concerns.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa's professor's offer multiple office hours to help the student's understanding even though the class sizes can be in an auditorium. They also have teacher assistant's who are very quick to respond to questions as well! The environment at the University of Iowa provides an excellent balance of studying and spending time downtown on the weekends.

    Bang for the buck

I think as an in-state student this is a wonderful school, but if I was from another state I would consider it. They have a wonderful Psych program, so I think its worth it.

    What to do for fun

There are lots of places to go all the time. At night there is always a party, and during the day there are tons of free concerts/games/sports to do.

    Food and Dining

There is a selection, but its very hard to find healthy, and good, food. There are lots of options, whether it's a quick bite in the Papa John's Business building, or dinning in at Burge. It is very hit and miss with the food choices.

    Dorm Life

This is where a lot of people meet their college friends. There are some great living-learning communities, which freshman get to know, and live, with other people who have the same career interests.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are challenging but not impossible. Lots of studying and understanding the teaching styles.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to ask around about teachers, or go onto rate my professor to check them out. If living off campus, cheaper is never better, and its worth the extra money.

    In three sentences

On a scale of 1-10, I would give this University an 8. There are lots of things to do here, but I don't care for some of the teachers. School is challenging, and the night life is phenomenal.

    Greek Life

Greek Life at U of I is very large. There are four different governing councils, and the number of active chapters on campus is growing. I believe that there is truly an entity in which someone can fit into.

    Clubs and Activities

There are several student organizations on campus. There is usually something for everyone. If for whatever reason you don't find something you're interested in, you can create your own organization.

    What to do for fun

During fall semester football takes over Iowa City. Everyone is at the football game at Kinnick Stadium. If you think football is not for you that quickly changes. You easily get immersed into the fun. The university has several events that occur on campus usually free to students.

    Food and Dining

The food can sometimes get repetitive, but from what I've heard that happens everywhere. There are so many options in the several dining areas.

    Dorm Life

I enjoyed life in the residence halls. There was always something going on to keep you entertained or give you a nice study break. Living in the halls is something I would definitely recommend to any and every student. It is what really gives you the college experience. This is also the best way to get to know fellow Hawkeyes.

    Academic Rigor

Professors really challenge you to do your best. Every professor that I have had has challenged me in a way or another. If things feel like they are getting challenging, visit the professor. They are more than glad to explain things and get to know you better. One thing is for sure, you have to put in work for your grade.

    Tips for prospective students

Feel free to really explore your options at the university. Take risks. If you are unsure of what to major in don't worry. There are plenty of staff, professors, and classes that can help you figure that out. Make the most out of your time here, but make sure to keep your priorities in check.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa is a great institution that allows students to become really involved. Faculty and staff really care for the success of students. There is always someone available to help.

    Campus Safety

If something happens on campus, you'll know right away. They have a thing called Hawkalert that tells you if something happened and to be on the lookout if it is dangerous. However, if you walk with a friend at all time during the night, you'll be fine.

    Clubs and Activities

I am involved in Salt Company which is a college ministry that I really enjoy. Every message relates to you as you go through college and touches your hearts.

Great for these types of students

If you are hardworking, but also want some kind of fun; this is a PERFECT college for you!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I love to study at the engineering library. You can talk, but it isn't too loud, and you'll find an outlet at every table. Art library is also a great place to go, and if you view it from up above, it's shaped like a guitar!

    What to do for fun

I go to the rec center to exercise with friends, go to football games, and walk around downtown with froyo. There are a lot of campus activities here so you'll never get bored. One time, they had a laser tag room set up for two nights, and it was so much fun! They also put up movie screenings for only three dollars! It's cheap, and they play movies that are not even out on DVD yet! It's a great way to relax when you are free on the weekends. We also have free bus rides after six on Thursdays and Fridays to go to the closest mall, about a 30 minutes by bus. It's a great way to spend your Friday nights. And it is only $1.25 for a round-trip any other days!

    Food and Dining

Dorm food is never a home cooked meal. I go to the Burge dining most of the time, but I just like to eat at downtown since it's just so close. They have many restaurants available there. Let's just say dorm food gets old after two months. Just stock up on home cooked meal as much as you can, you'll DEFINITELY miss it!

    Dorm Life

I honestly love where I am living! It's an honors dorm so I met a lot of people in the same field of study as me. They are so helpful when it comes to homework. It's just a really close community, and it gets rowdy sometimes but you get used to that after a while.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are somewhat difficult, but you can get through them. I always go and ask for help, and they do not hesitate to help you. Finding guidance is really easy.

    Tips for prospective students

You should really consider University of Iowa. It's a Big 10 school, and you meet a lot of people while living on campus. The professors and TA's are there to help, and they tell you everyday in class. It's just a GREAT school!

    In three sentences

I LOVE it here. I never expected to learn so much and make so many friends! I honestly am so glad that I came here to find my sense of direction, because I honestly did not know what I liked to do and what I was good at.

Iowa citizens, partiers, science and health fields, writing and literature fiends, etc.

    What to do for fun

There are some great UI sponsored concerts and events. For the typical student, bars and parties tend to be the way to go.

    Food and Dining

Actual university food is not the best, but Iowa City (the downtown area is right on campus) boasts tons of great places to eat.

    Dorm Life

I did not live in the dorm so I can't accurately rate it. However, depending on which dorm you live in, it can be a lot of fun or a lot of awful.

    Academic Rigor

This truly depends on your major and course of study. I don't feel comfortable comparing biochemistry with communication studies...

    Tips for prospective students

Don't drink too much. Avoid the police. Pass your classes. That, my friends, is how to survive Iowa City.

    In three sentences

Located in Iowa City, the University of Iowa is a good school and a great college experience. Balance your academics with your beer pong and you'll get a lot out of Iowa.

I have never been in a situation where I feel unsafe on campus or off. The police are very diligent and the University offers services such as safe ride to ensure the safety of its students. I am a petite female and have never felt as if I am in danger.

    Greek Life

I am not involved in Greek life, but I have many friends who rushed and they all had a positive experience. There are many sororities and fraternities to choose from.

    Clubs and Activities

There is an incredible amount of clubs and activities as well as volunteer opportunities to explore! Everything from archery, to archaeology, to rowing, to creative writing, and much much more!

Great for these types of students

The University of Iowa is great for every type of student in my opinion. The University is not too big or too small and has something to offer for everyone, whether it be academics, sports, extracurriculars, or greek life.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hubbard Park is a wide-open field where the University hosts free concerts for students, which are actually incredibly fun. They bring in big names. Our recreation center also has a 30 foot rock wall as well as a hot tub and a lazy river.

    Bang for the buck

The University has everything I wanted in a university. The classes are of excellent quality, the dorms are comfortable and the clean, there are plenty of options in the dining hall, and there is never a lack of entertainment on the weekends. I would highly recommend the University of Iowa to any student looking for a quality university!

    What to do for fun

Iowa City is a very lively place. There are many unique restaurants, there are multiple concert venues, there is a great shopping mall nearby and there are plenty of free events hosted by the University. My friends and I are never bored on the weekends.

    Food and Dining

Everyone knows that dorm food gets old. However, the food here is more than bearable. There are many options, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. Also, I find that the quality exceeds that of most other schools I have visited.

    Dorm Life

After visiting at least four other colleges, I have found that the dorms at the University of Iowa are extremely nice in comparison. They are clean, spacious for dorm rooms, and have a generous amount of furnishings. They are very conveniently located on campus and are more than satisfactory.

    Academic Rigor

Every course I have taken at the University of Iowa so far has been excellent in quality. The courses are challenging but extremely rewarding. I feel as if I have already gained a wealth of knowledge having only completed one semester here.

    Tips for prospective students

Listen to the students that lead the orientation groups, no matter how cheesy you might think they sound. Almost all of them will emphasize how beneficial it is to speak with professors during their office hours, and that is the best piece of advice anyone can give you in my opinion.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa is a big school, but the campus is small enough that it feels welcoming rather than overwhelming. I have only encountered quality teachers and coursework, and there is a very wide variety of courses to choose from. Lastly, there is great school spirit and many great organizations to be part of.

    Academic Rigor

Don't let freshman classes fool you, they require just as much studying if not more than the upper level courses. There are many free tutoring services available on campus as well as workshops for your essays if you are nervous about the quality of your work.

The University of Iowa has a location on campus called the Pentacrest. The Pentacrest is made up of 5 old buildings, one of the buildings being the state of Iowa's first capital building. Their are classes in these old, cool buildings, but also museums that students can go visit.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Iowa is considered the best buy for a Big 10 school which is really nice! A student gets to attend a big university for a lot less. Campus living is one of the most expensive in the state of Iowa, but most of the dorms are really nice and spacious compared to other colleges in the state.

    What to do for fun

Student organizations put on all kinds of activities for people to participate in throughout the week that are FREE! However, unless a student has a car here there is not that much to do off campus, unless people like to consume alcohol. There is no bowling alley or movie theater near by, but a group on campus does have movie showing every week for as little as $2.

    Food and Dining

Honestly, there isn't much to do in Iowa City that doesn't involve drinking. So if you're not into partying, I honestly don't know what you would do.

    Food and Dining

The food isn't terrible, and there's usually a large selection. Burge's Oreo fluff is fantastic.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are set up in Living-Learning Communities, so you spend most of your time with people who have the same academic or personal interests as you. This is a plus, and creates a great studying environment. The dorms themselves are decent sized and the facilities are decent as well.

    Campus Safety

There's a night ride service, phones around and the 21 ordinance that doesn't allow underagers in bars - period. But still there's a higher amount of date rape than average. Just be cautious and aware.

    Food and Dining

The local places are great and pretty cheap, but the cafeteria food is a bit gross and has pretty often given people food poisoning.

    Dorm Life

I opted not to go to the dorms because I've heard there's a lot of drama/partying and also being packed like sardines doesn't really sound that appealing to me. Also, the Mayflower dorm floods everytime we have high water - so 1994, 2008 and 2013. Would not recommend living in that dorm - ever.

    Academic Rigor

You really get out of it what you put into it. I took one class I was really interested in but the teacher killed my interest, but I've also taken a class I didn't think I was interested in and was drawn into. You'll have to work, but I don't really have to work too much more than I did in high school to get good grades.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Know if you want to study abroad 2. Love your academic advisor 3. Know what kind of classes you want/possibly even the exact classes you want to take by orientation

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa has a great student atmosphere for anyone, not just the partiers (but also the partiers). There are a lot of misconceptions about coming to Iowa, but there's a lot to do in Iowa and you're at least a couple miles from the nearest cornfield. As for professors, they're better than average on average, but some professors are really there for research, not for teaching.

    The workout facilities present there.

    What to do for fun

Any of the organizations at the school can create enjoyment and bring much fun to any one.

    Food and Dining

The food is great and you can easily set up a routine of eating the best food there. The only downside is that the hours that the dining halls are open at weird times.

    Dorm Life

I had such a great time with my floor. I consider them family and still am friends with them even after my dorm life stay. The reason why it was much fun and successful is that everyone was friendly and had their doors open almost 24/7.

    Academic Rigor

Just like every school, the academic rigor of a school depends on the classes you take and the work you put into it. There are plenty of classes that can be considered easier classes, while there are also several classes that demand a lot of work and effort.

    Tips for prospective students

Go out and take advantage of the opportunities that the school provides. Join a intramural sport, join an organization, join a fraternity or sorority. Although Iowa's reputation as a party school, make sure you get your work done.

    Campus Safety

I have never felt unsafe on campus, which is saying a lot for a girl who often walks around alone at night after work. There are so many options for places to go while waiting for a ride or for girls to call Nite Ride to have a free and safe ride home thanks to the Iowa City Police.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

When the snow has finally melted and the weather feels like summer again, students will spend as much time as possible in one of Iowa's many green areas. The pentacrest is a popular area for tanning or laying outside to do homework.

    Food and Dining

Dining hall food is pretty similar anywhere you go, I've experienced it on quite a few college campuses. The part I enjoy most about the meal plans at Iowa though is that they can be used at the IMU, Iowa Memorial Union, where a person can get a stir fry made along with a drink and some fruit.

    Dorm Life

I lived in Mayflower my freshman year, so I got to enjoy having a kitchen and bathroom shared with three other girls. I had a lot of fun in the dorms, and met many of my good friends here. The RAs hosted many activities like build-a-bear and life-size game night.

    Academic Rigor

Each program is difficult in its own way. If a person is interested in engineering they can expect to focus a long time to attempt to complete a problem. But if a person is an art major, like me, they will be forced to think of how to solve a problem and complete something in as many ways possible. All classes will cause you to spend time working to considering answers and think about how they could be used to fix ideas and objects in the world today.

    Tips for prospective students

Spend time exploring downtown and walking around the city. There are lots of interesting shops, restaurants and parks to enjoy with your friends, but don't forget to go to class. As easy as it is to skip, when it comes to grades you'll be glad you went.

    In three sentences

I've never been one for school spirit, but I love Iowa. I was not raised to be a Hawkeye lover, in fact I spent the first 18 years of my life as a Badger fan, but I've come around after spending time in Iowa City. The school and the city are so welcoming and help you to feel like you are a part of something bigger.

If you attend this Big Ten school, you must attend a football game and a basketball game. Iowa sports have so many traditions behind them, that you have to go just to experience it yourself. I am also a cheerleader for the university so the best advice I could give anyone is to get involved.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls and hours are very convenient for students that are on campus all day. They have a variety of foods every day of the week. They may not always be healthy meals but without the dining halls, most of the students would go hungry!

    Dorm Life

The dorm is where you are going to meet some of your best friends for life. They become the people you spend every day with. The dorms are very well kept and are organized so that you are around people you have things in common with or are studying the same major as you are. There are bus stops right outside every dorm on campus!

    Academic Rigor

The course work is challenging but they make it that way for a reason. You have to assume responsibility for yourself and take the steps necessary to be successful.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focused but don't forget to have fun! It is very easy to wake up in the morning and decide not go to class because none of your professors care. Push through the laziness and go to class because this is your future and it will all be worth it in the end.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa is a fantastic place to have your college experience at. This university has so many old yet amazing traditions that anyone should want to be a part of. Also, a degree from Iowa looks good on any resume!

There are multiple campus activities on a daily basis, so you're never bored. The IMU offers $1 movies that are not yet released on DVD. There are a lot of cultural activities as well. In the warmer months on campus there are a lot of free on campus outdoor concerts with major artists which are a big hit with everyone.

    Food and Dining

On campus dining is kind of a hit or miss. In general it's really good and beats out high school cafeteria food. There are always tons of options and the menu changes daily. The dining halls are buffet style so you can really eat your money's worth. The IMU cafeteria and Pat's Diner are great options for take out/on the go days when you don't have time to sit down. The IMU will custom make a lot of your meals and is a good change up to the dorm dining halls.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a great, once in a life time experience. This is where you'll meet a lot of your friends and there's a great sense of community in a dorm. The dorms are kept pretty clean, and the bathrooms are all cleaned daily. There are a lot of activities you can participate in the dorms and with the prox card system, they're pretty safe as well.

    Academic Rigor

It honestly depends on the class and the professor. Some professors are easier than others, just like you would find in high school. Looking at ratemyprofessor.com prior to signing up for classes so you can find the best fit for a professor in the classes you want to take.

    Tips for prospective students

For prospective students, communication is key. With so many students and opportunities, no one will know that you need something unless you ask for it. If you need help don't be afraid to ask for it. Also take advantage of professors' office hours. It's the one time you can have one-on-one time with your professor to ask any questions you have. Also, the professors really like it when they get visitors; they're here to help you.

    In three sentences

It's a great school with an immeasurable amount of opportunities for students. The atmosphere and school spirit is everywhere in Iowa City. Although it's a big ten school and some of the class sizes can be large, help is always available when/if you need it.

    Food and Dining

Two dining halls provided on both sides of campus (Hillcrest on the West and Burge on the East). The food always sufficed for a good meal and full stomach.

    Dorm Life

I LOVED MY DORM. I made some really good friends with people on my floor living in the honors hall. The bathrooms were set in little pods on each floor so we had a toilet, shower, and sink all to ourselves.

    Academic Rigor

I don't know how it is for others, but everyone thinks that UIowa is an easy school. The Intro classes don't take much to get an A in, but you definitely have to show up to lectures and discussions. I encourage you to study in each class to have an easy breeze.

    Tips for prospective students

Get up and get out, don't just sit in your dorm room the first week. Meet other first years and actually read those annoying emails from organizations telling you to join their group. You might actually find something that you'll associate with for the rest of your college career.

    Campus Safety

Very safe. The campus police as well as the surrounding Iowa city police keep everything in check. Even walking home late at night after a class, I have never felt unsafe or threatened.

    Clubs and Activities

CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ) - On campus christian group. This club is phenomenal. I have met so many friends and have such a blast at Cru gatherings. OnIowa! - student orientation mentor group. I participated in this program as an incoming freshman as one of the students that was being mentored. The program was super helpful in getting me set up for classes and acclimated to the University environment. So this year, the tables have turned, and now I'm going to be a mentor for thirty freshman. This program is a really good way to get involved and make a difference at the University of Iowa.

Great for these types of students

The University of Iowa is great for students who want to challenge themselves academically, are serious about academics, and want to gain worthwhile experience.

    Bang for the buck

I pay out of state tuition so its quite expansive. Though I think that it is worth it, I think that there could be more scholarship opportunities.

    What to do for fun

When I do have free time I typically spend time with friends studying in cafes or watching movies. I've become involved in CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ) and it is amazing, I have met so many friends, and attend several weekend retreats thanks to this group.

    Food and Dining

The food isn't great, but it isn't bad either. The availability of vegetarian options is slim. All in all its cafeteria food, and you receive what they advertise.

    Dorm Life

The buildings themselves aren't bad, however the dorm I had as a freshman was awful in terms of the social life. I lived in Rienow on the west side of campus and my floor was constantly partying and coming back to their room wasted or high. The University states that it is a dry campus, but I found this not to be true within the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Iowa has high expectations when it comes to the performance of its students academically. Given the national ranking (72nd) this should be no surprise. Don't get me wrong it isn't overwhelming or achievable, though they definitely do make you work for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Get Involved! This is perhaps the easiest thing to do at Iowa, but definitely the most critical. Whether you join clubs/sports, volunteer, get an on campus job, or form a study group, getting involved is the best way to make friends, be happier, and succeed overall academically.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa is simply amazing, I have never felt more at home, yet still challenged. The university definitely has high expectations, but they do their best to provide every student with the chance to achieve their goals as well as the university's goal. There is a lot required of you as a student, but its college it would be a disappointment if it was any other way.

Hang out on the Pentacrest or at College Green park. Enjoy the nightlife of downtown Iowa City. Check out live music performances, arts festivals, the reservoir (best beach in the area!), and many more places. Like to run, walk, or ride your bike? Try out one of the many trails along the Iowa River. There is never a dull moment in Iowa City.

There are several dining options on campus including the Iowa Memorial Union River Room, Burge Hall dining facility, and multiple c-stores. Can't find anything you like on campus? Enjoy one of the dozens of places to eat in downtown Iowa City within blocks of campus. There are tons of local favorites, and you're sure to find something you like!

    Dorm Life

There are many dorms on campus, as well as off-campus apartment living. Dorm leaders are constantly organizing activities for students living on campus. It is a great way to meet new people, and it saves you from having to pay for extras off campus like parking.

    Academic Rigor

The courses here are challenging but enjoyable. I never walk away from a course feeling I've learned nothing. Many of the instructors are very passionate about what they teach, and they pass that enthusiasm onto their students.

Try not to focus too much on only taking courses directly affiliated with your major. There are so many amazing electives offered, and you may end up discovering something new to be passionate about! Some of my favorite classes were electives that led me to pursue a couple of certificates outside of my BA field of study.

The University of Iowa has an incredible range of programs and coursework available to students that will challenge as well as interest people from every walk of life. The instructors are always willing to go the extra mile to help students walk away from their courses with real-world knowledge that can be used post-graduation. Lastly, the university has many resources available to students including: hundreds of student organizations and clubs, a large recreational facility, offices where students can receive help in multiple areas (academics, health, legal advice, and more), and tons of study areas indoors and outdoors.

    Tips for prospective students

This school is a really big school that has students from all backgrounds and countries all over the world. I think you can basically learn whatever you want to learn and combine your interest in may different way since this college has all kinds of major and it's really flexible to change your major in the way you want. However, I don't like the way the financial systems works here because the people in charge of them are not flexible at all.

    Campus Safety

I have heard of a few incidences over the years but in general I feel very safe on campus, walking to where I lived last year when I was off-campus, and wherever I end up venturing on the weekends. Iowa has many safety features that they happily yodel about to prospective students (and parents) but I have never had occasion to use any of the many ways they keep us safe.

    Greek Life

Greek life is decently big on our campus, but I am not part of the greek community and don't feel left out. I have friends in frats and sororities, and being in one seems like a blast, but choosing to pass did not negatively affect my experience at Iowa.

    Clubs and Activities

If you're expecting a big city like New York City or Chicago, go home. You probably 1. Did not even visit Iowa City before coming and 2. Will get bored because there are few flashing lights. Like I said before, there are tons of things to do. It's up to you to pick things you actually like. There is a huge party culture here, house parties and also bar crowds. Most bars are 21+ after 10 due to a city ordinance but there is still plenty to entertain you if you are under 21, never fear. If that is what you find fun, you will have fun. Along with the party culture, FOOTBALL is a huge part of coming to Iowa. We are the HAWKEYES (No, our mascot is not the hot guys as I had to explain to an out-of state friend who had only heard me mention hawkeyes in conversation. ... But hey, I'm not saying that's inaccurate) Tailgating is always a blast and there is nothing like cheering for our team as part of the black and gold student section, packed to the rafters in the rain or sun or snow.

    What to do for fun

WORK IT OUT: The new Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC but really I just call it the rec) has a HUGE rock wall, pool, sauna, volleyball, basketball and indoor soccer courts, four levels of equipment and tons of free yoga, zumba, and whatever else you can think of. There are also ... at least three other gyms on campus. DANCE IT OUT: Dance Marathon is a charity group that raises millions of dollars for childhood cancer every year, culminating their experience by staying up and dancing in the IMU for 24 hours straight. There are also tons of places to go downtown if you feel like dancing the night away. We have a few places with some good karaoke on some nights, just in case you want to SING IT OUT too. PLAY IT OUT: The Pentacrest (central campus) is five buildings set on big grassy fields and hills. No matter what season it is you will see people playing ultimate frisbee, capture the flag, kicking soccer balls around, throwing snowballs and sledding, or even just rolling down grassy hills. CLUB IT OUT: There are tons of clubs to join, and they all want you. YOU. I was seriously overwhelmed by the number of introductory emails I got about different clubs. Things I had never heard of before, things I had never considered doing myself, things I just went to for the free pizza. But whether you are interested in gaming clubs, playing intramurals, watching movies, competitive dancing, trying a new sport, growing plants, eating good food, or just meeting fun people, you will probably find something that you want. CHILL IT OUT: There are tons of coffee places, little shops, little parks, and great ice cream / fro-yo places by campus. So if you want to be chill and sip coffee, shop, or literally cool off, you have plenty of choices. But really, the most fun thing you will do is find a group of crazy people to hang out with and do all of these things and more. I'm sure the next generation at Iowa will climb onto even more roofs, run through even more rain, pass out on more random couches, spend even more time contemplating life, hands, and the galaxy than my class did. Who knows what else. ?!

    Food and Dining

The food is good. Burge is the big dining hall on the East Side of campus, Hillcrest on the West Side. They both have their own fan clubs but they both have an interesting variety food that I'm sure your mom wasn't cooking for you every night. My favorite was the sushi and stir-fry, but they have something that will make sure everyone gets by. No fear you won't be able to gain your freshman 15 here. That said, they have been doing a big push for healthy options and they have a bunch of vegetarian options and even some vegan ones. I am a huge fan of spinach, so having as much fresh spinach as I could eat every day was great. And hey, who doesn't like ice cream?

    Dorm Life

At my parents ...encouragement... I chose to live in a quiet dorm my freshman year. I had visions of silent halls and annoying roommates who would glower at me for sneezing too loudly or laughing. This was far from the case and I engaged in my fair share of freshman year shenanigans. Dorm life was by far my favorite part of freshman year, and although I have narrowed down the 27+ people I used to eat dinner with at the beginning of college, having access to so many fun people that close to you has been great. It is important to note that dorm LIFE is what I gave 5/5 stars. The dorms themselves are probably slightly better than your standard college dorms, a 3.5/5 (Yes, I am qualified to say this - after being half-dragged to 14 different college visits I have probably been inside more college dorms than you) for a few reasons: They are decently sized. I visited a few campuses that had dorms the size of two twin beds and a closet. Iowa's are not like that. The rooms in my freshman year dorm were all built for three people but now only house two (or one) for comfort. Most have extra amenities that you wouldn't think are useful until you need them. Mine all had sinks in the rooms. This is especially great when you want to brush your teeth without walking down the hall or are really thirsty when you wake up at 7 a.m. but don't feel like walking down a bright hallway and putting on pants. There are two groups of dorms, one on each side of the river that runs through campus. The East Side has slightly more housing, faster access to most of campus, and, on average, more crazyness, but the West Side has a great sense of community and prettier views. For the hot temps most rooms have a/c and for the cold ALL buildings have a thermostat that is set on making you feel like you are in Florida. Suffice it to say I was never cold inside during the winter. Slight warning: I have heard of people finding the odd pest roaming around their room. Bats, spiders (I had one freshman year that was around so often I ended up naming him) and insects are not unheard of, but the atmosphere and the people make up for it by far.

    Academic Rigor

4/5 stars because for the amount of money you pay and the work you put into your grades you get a good return in your grades. Iowa was not incredibly challenging; I did not have to spend hours each night studying my life away on weekends instead of going out, but I do advise studying. Professors are far more interested and engaged with you if you try, and are not unwilling to give low grades.

    Tips for prospective students

Think about the kinds of people you really enjoy hanging out with, what are they like? Sporty? Preppy? Funny? Snobby? Smart? Interesting? Logical? Shippers? Friendly? Annoying? Dull? Engaging? Teckie? Just like you? Very different from you? Iowa has all of those kinds of people and more. Because its a decent size you won't feel suffocated by the same people every day but instead have to choose to be friends with only a small portion of the undergrads. Its up to you who you end up with! Iowa also has a great range of majors, and because of the range of things to do in the city its easy to be friends with people outside if your major. I have friends in everything from Electrical Engineering to English, Physics to Psychology, Business to Basket Weaving. (Okay that last one is fake, Basket Weaving is not a major, despite what your uncle assures you). Iowa is in the Midwest. The summers are HOT. The winters are COLD. Please avoid if you are incapable of handling temperature extremes.

    In three sentences

The Hawkeyes are the lifeblood of the college town named Iowa City. You may think of Iowa as a place full of cornfields, but IC is a great city full of fun people and cool bars and little stores. If size is important to you (as it should be) University of Iowa has (in my opinion) the perfect medium-sized school of 22K undergrad, who all know how to have fun and get a degree at the same time.

There are many small shops and restaurants to try out. There's always something new to check out in Iowa City!

    Food and Dining

There's enough food here to satisfy your cravings but I believe the quality of the food is not up to par. I've been to many college visits and compared to others, the food in the dining halls are just okay. Sometimes the food is cold and tasteless, but it just depends on what you get!

    Dorm Life

Everyone treats you like family in the dorms and there are many activities you can do! The dorms are really nice and clean.

    Academic Rigor

Definitely depends on what your major in and how ambitious you want to succeed. The coursework here is definitely more strenuous than high school. In college, a one-semester class is usually equivalent to a one-year class in high school. Just think about that.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to find your balance between your schoolwork and everything else. It is important to keep your grades up and then after, you can have fun! College is really when I figure out how to manage my time. Also, don't be afraid to explore a little! You're going to be here for at least a year, so get to know your environment and the people around. Join a club or a sport you're interested in - the University of Iowa has many! This will help the transition from high school to college.

It's such a neat experience, being trapped in your designated building each day allows you to meet so many new friends. The dorm life will make you realize how well you can fend for yourself, which is an experience I will never forget.

    Academic Rigor

I'm speaking from prior experience, but if you're gonna get campus food, go to Hillcrest. Burge is nicknamed 'dirty burge' for a reason.

Witness the crowd roar for every play made by our football team. meet fans dedicated to the teams success and have a great time with all the lovely handsome student body.

    Food and Dining

Choices range from salads, to burgers, to Chinese food to steak and pot roast. Each taste authentic, are made in front of you and leave your stomachs full and mouth watering. If the dining halls uninterested you, there are many alternatives. their are more than plenty of restaurants within walking distance on campus to choose from.

    What to do for fun

As with all colleges, there are parties for any student that is interested to attend. On campus, groups and Resident Assistants put on weekly events that students are able to attend that are fun and free to go to .

    Food and Dining

The food at this university does not fail the students. There is a wide variety of choices ranging from salads to Mexican to even Chinese food. The downfall of this cafeteria food is how fattening it can be and how easy it is for students to gain weight because it is a buffet style so students are able to repeatedly get more food.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are an amazing way for students to make friends and experience what college life is really like. It is a great way for students to get accustomed to the university and I highly recommend living in the dorms especially as a freshman.

I chose 8 because I believe it has the best opportunities for students who want to do well in their classes, study abroad, and have time to join clubs. University and Iowa City PD are employed to protect the campus, there are 18 emergency lights poles that alert the police of your location and project both lights and sirens when the button is pressed to scare off attackers. The bus system also runs 21 hours a day and goes all over campus so you will always have a ride home.

    Greek Life

Iowa is very big on Greek life and there are many sororities and fraternities so you are bound to find one that you fit into if you are interested in Greek life.

    Clubs and Activities

Every sport you could think of and even more clubs that you can join.

Great for these types of students

Great for engineering and english students, plenty of classes and plenty of help for those struggling in these classes.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The library has recently been redone on the ground floor and is super modern and completely awesome!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is reasonable but the dorms get to be kind of expensive, especially if you include a meal plan. The meal plans are outrageous and not really worth the cost, especially if your dorm room has a kitchen.

    What to do for fun

Plenty of athletic events constantly going on and lots of groups/causes that you can join.

    Food and Dining

There are only two all-you-can-eat cafeterias on campus which can be very busy and the food can get very boring at times. Every dorm building does have a c-store that has premade sandwiches that you can use your meal swipes on and has reasonably priced necessities such as frozen dinners, milk, and eggs.

    Dorm Life

Many dorms are very new and have all the works. Each dorm has special events almost every week and have plenty of things to do.

    Academic Rigor

Since it is a university, many classes, even gen eds and electives, can be challenging but never impossible to get a good grade in. You do have to work hard to get your desired grade in your classes.

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

The University of Iowa is a relatively safe campus but it's still important to exercise caution at night.

    Clubs and Activities

Since the first semester of my first year, I have been involved in MAPS. As a pre med major, MAPS has really been a great, informative experience for me. There are many great things about it that I haven't said so I'll just give you the link to the website if you want to learn more: http://uiowa.orgsync.com/org/maps/Officers. If you want to get involved, the U of I offers many more great clubs and activities for you to be involved, all you have to do is just Pick One!

    Food and Dining

At first you'll like the food that you'll eat at Burge and Hilcrest because it's a step up from high school food. However, eventually you'll get tired of it. Sometimes things aren't cooked as well as you would like and that's understandable since these dining halls feed thousands of students a day. If you ever do feel tired of Burge and Hilcrest food, branch out and eat at some of the Iowa City's restaurants once in a while. If you live at Mayflower or have kitchen, make your own food.

    Dorm Life

Dorms at the University of Iowa each have there own reputation. For instance, Mayflower, though it comes equipped with bathroom and kitchen, the culture, unfortunately consists of lots of partying and drinking. It's far away from campus too. If you want to be focused in your academics and don't want as many distractions, the honors dorm, Daum is the place for you. Hilcrest is relatively nice dorm that has a dining hall that has a castle like architecture. In general, for any dorm that you live in, regardless of whether you decide to attend the U of I, you are not going to get along with everyone. Having good communication skills, patience and exercising courtesy will allow you to make your living environment a safe, comfortable place to live.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on your major, the level of difficulty of the classes you take vary. For science majors, the classes may pose a challenge but the University of Iowa offers lots of tutoring opportunities and workshops to help you study effectively and efficiently. For example, the Center for Diversity and Enrichment offers tutors for as many classes as you need help with for free! If you truly want to succeed at the University of Iowa, there's really nothing stopping you from reaching your academic goals.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa, though it's a big research university, can have the intimacy of a small college when you find what you're interested in. Getting around campus is hard at first, but eventually you'll get the hang of it by using the Bongo app (shows you bus schedule). Also, there are many faculty members and advisers that want to see you succeed, you won't feel alone or hopeless.

There are a lot of opportunities for students on campus to be involved. I get emails inviting me to many functions but since I am a nontraditional student, taking classes online at a distance, I do not participate in these activities.

    Food and Dining

I do not dine at the college

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorms so I did not want to rate this but I had to.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Iowa is a top rank school for nursing.

    Tips for prospective students

I think the biggest challenge of an online course is staying organized and a head in your studies. Some find it difficult with to do that without attending a physical class but if you follow the course syllabus and content that the professors provide, it is very easy to accomplish.

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa RN-BSN program has provided me with the tools and insight needed to help me step up and take action regarding patient safety. The online program has allowed me to continue working full time while taking the required courses part time. It is a great school with professors who are available to help as needed.

    What to do for fun

Go downtown to the bars! You're allowed in the bars until 10 if you're under 21. If not, there are tons of restaurants and sub sandwich places downtown. Hookah bars, tattoo shops, etc.

    Food and Dining

Food is sometimes good and sometimes terrible. The chicken tends to be mystery meat. However, there are several different stations: Asian, pasta, pizza, tacos, home style, and grilled. The choices switch up each day, and they have amazing breakfast. ***Breakfast is served until 2 on Sundays!!

    Dorm Life

I live in Parklawn which has apartment style rooms. That means you get your own bathroom, kitchen, living room, and bedroom along with your room mate. Groceries get kind of expensive, but I love having my own bathroom and shower. Parklawn is kind of a small building so you get to know everyone very well. Other dorms might have girl floors and guy floors, not co-ed, like Rienow for example. Dorm life really isn't that bad.

    Academic Rigor

College classes content wise are just as easy as high school classes. However, there will be more work and the work is longer. You will have to write lots of papers no matter what classes you're in. Except maybe if you plan on being an engineer. You'll be a pro at spitting out a five page paper in four hours.

    Tips for prospective students

Always, ALWAYS go to office hours, talk with/email your TA and/or professor. They WILL bump up you're grade from a 89 to a 90 if they know/like you. If you are trying to find more friends, rush for a soror/frat, and if you hate it you don't have to pledge, but you still have all the friends from rushing.

    In three sentences

Amazing, beautiful campus but the hills will get old. The location of the campus, right in the city, will always leave you with something to do and something to eat. Also, I haven't met a teacher yet that I haven't liked.

    Campus Safety

There are always people that want to cause trouble but there is security everywhere and a lot of students who will come to your aid if needed.

    Clubs and Activities

    There is something for everyone.

    Bang for the buck

Housing and food are what is so expensive. The tuition is a great deal though.

    What to do for fun

Work out, participate in theatre, go see concerts or plays, hang with friends, go to CAB movies (Tickets are $3!!!!!), walk around IC, walk around the Ped Mall.

    Food and Dining

It is what it is. But it isn't bad and even have a couple items I will when I go home for breaks.

    Dorm Life

Depends on the dorm. Stanley Hall was where I was placed my first year and it was the best living experience I could have hoped for. The dorm was well kept and comfortable and I considered it home. Then I was placed in Currier. It is an older dorm and not as comfortable. The first month was a struggle with the heat and so forth. ADVICE: get a air conditioner! otherwise your room can reach over 80 degrees, and any chocolate in your room will always melt.

    Academic Rigor

Some say students at state colleges can slack off and still pass. This is true. However, that does not mean the education is poor. Those who slack off do have it reflected in their grades and those who show up to class, do their homework ,and value their education also have it reflected in their grades and achievements.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage EVERY opportunity that interests you or you think MIGHT benefit you. They are their to help you and you do not have to be worried about what people will think if you go to a tutor, a good majority of students see a tutor of some form. Find opportunities (tutoring, mentoring, jobs, extra curricular, etc) and take them.

    Clubs and Activities

Everyone will tell you to be apart of an organization. This will be a great way to meet a lot more people and will get you involve. My favorite Dance Marathon!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Some traditions would be ON IOWA! Which is a big event in the beginning of the year to get you excited for the school year. Also, going to football games with your friends is a tradition in it's own way, because you have fun and get to cheer on your team.

    What to do for fun

For fun I like to have girls nights and literally just have the time of my life.

    Food and Dining

The two main dining halls are Hillcrest and Burge. Hillcrest is on the west side of campus, they have more of a quality menu. Whereas Burge is near the center of campus, they have quantity other than quality.

    Dorm Life

Make tons of friends in the dorm and outside the dorm. That's how you find your friends that will stay forever.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are harder than High School. You will need to find you niche in note taking and studying.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let partying and social life get your school work off track. It is extremely hard to catch up if you are in a demanding course, in other words don't slack off.

    In three sentences

I have enjoyed my experience so far at the University, it is a very welcoming environment. Although we are ranked the number one party school, no one is truly pressured to take part in the festivities. It is also a great place to find what you inspire to be in life, and to find those life long friends everyone talks about.

    Campus Safety

I mean I think the campus is safe. From time to time I'll get an email saying there was a sexual assault crime that happened in early hours. The thing is, travel in groups. There are always UI Police patrolling around though.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Getting up at 5am and tailgating before every home football game. It's a must. Go Hawks.

    Bang for the buck

I'm an Iowa native so I get in state tuition. Pretty cheap. So many opportunities at this university I have no idea where to begin.

    What to do for fun

It's the #1 party school. You'll find something to do. There are always sporting events happening. Football, basketball, and wrestling are the go sports at this university. Also, a UI club is always hosting some sort of event everyday. Always something to do here.

    Food and Dining

I would give 5 stars, but the lines are so long and I have run out of patience. The food is good, but try not to eat there everyday/every meal or else you'll get tired of it.

    Dorm Life

Love living in the dorms. I live in the suite kind (Mayflower), which is a little far from campus, but you get to learn all the bus routes which I saw as a plus. Always a great way to meet new people since there are 1000+ people living in some dorms. The dorms are a good decent size, though depending on what room you get. Some rooms are bigger than others, but not on purpose. My room has to x-long beds, a tv, a futon, room for a moon chair, and room to dance around. Also kitchen and bathroom.

    Academic Rigor

Classes at UI can be pretty rigorous depending on your major. If you're in science/health related major, be prepared to study more than usual. Pretty fast speed in lectures. Lecture notes are usually online, so if you miss something, make a mark in your notes and look it up later. There are MANY resources on campus for academic health, you just have to do the work and go ask for help.

    Tips for prospective students

STUDY STUDY STUDY. Finals will be the mental death of you. Be social though. It's hard to not be social at UI. Don't get caught doing bad things; you're parents WILL get a letter.

    In three sentences

Best college in Iowa. A lot of tolerance in Iowa City, besides being #1 Party school. Bang for the buck.

There is no need to worry.

    Greek Life

I am not involved, but my friends who are involved absolutely love it.

    Clubs and Activities

Brothers, Summit, Airliner, Union, DC's, The Field House.. the list goes on forever. For activities, there are several hundreds, my advice would definitely be to check out Iowa's website.

Great for these types of students

    Adventurous, Social, Energetic, Ambitious.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hamburg Inn is delicious, a tiny diner that has great coffee and breakfast food.

    Bang for the buck

I am an out of state student, and I really find the price raise for us out of state students ridiculous. Those who live in the state of Iowa pay about half of what I pay, so sometimes it makes me angry, but I definitely do not regret coming here, it was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

    What to do for fun

Going out downtown with my friends and tailgating for football games are the top highlights for me.

    Food and Dining

I could live without going to the campus dining halls, I normally cook my own dinners, or rely on Chipotle, which is right on campus, so it works out perfectly.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life was a unique experience, definitely one I would recommend for everyone to try out in their life.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are definitely a challenge, you have to work extremely hard to get a good grade. There is no such thing as messing around when it deals with college courses.

    Tips for prospective students

Be able to work hard for what you want, classes are not a joke here, you have to work hard, competing with several students for your grades in some courses. Also, enjoy a large environment, with several thousands of people on campus, you have to be somewhat social.

    In three sentences

University of Iowa offers great opportunities for those students who are willing to work hard towards their goals. Since freshman year, I have been able to call University of Iowa my home, and I am proud to be a Hawkeye. With an enormous campus, several thousands of people, and so many different things to do, you will be able to expand across your normal comfort zone, doing things you probably had never imagined doing, at this wonderful university.

    Food and Dining

The food is surprisingly good. It does get old after awhile but the variety could be way worse. It is very clean and very organized. The meal plans are definately a good idea.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are either a hit or miss. The cleanliness is great, but the staff aren't. It is important to be in an LLC (Living Learning Community) that you enjoy and are going to want to participate in activities. Some dorms have boys and girls floors so if you are particular you need to be careful for what dorm you sign up in. But overall it is a good experience.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are difficult, but if you put in the effort to get help you will do well. Studying is extremily important to do well. There are lots of different resources that are available to help you be successful.

    Tips for prospective students

You will find your place at University of Iowa. Going into college can be scary, especially if you don't know anyone who is attending the same school, but at Iowa, there are students and professors who want to get to know you and make sure that your experience is nothing less than you want it to be.

    In three sentences

University of Iowa is an awesome university where the student body is competitive and united. UI is a place where everyone can find a place where they belong and are welcome with open arms. My experience at Iowa has been nothing but awesome professors who want to help, and intelligent students wanting to excell.

    Bang for the buck

I've been to three post-secondary educational institutions now, and Iowa definitely gives me the most bang for my buck. I'm getting a degree from a reputable college at an affordable, public university price. The faculty members are knowledgeable and experienced in their fields, and most of them strive to create connections with their students. It's very easy to go ask a professor for a letter of recommendation for a scholarship or internship. The university constantly provides me with entertainment and student involvement options. I do not have any desire to earn my degree anywhere else.

    What to do for fun

There is so much to do on and off campus! The University of Iowa hosts dozens of large events throughout the year, the biggest of which is Dance Marathon. Students can participate in marathons, attend cultural balls, and go see movies weekly at the CAB. Off campus, Iowa City has a thriving nightlife culture with everything from pubs to martini bars to dance clubs. Iowa City also hosts a wide range of events, has a thriving local shopping district, and boosts itself as a World UNESCO City of Literature. Long story short, there is Always something to do in Iowa City!

    Food and Dining

The flood of 2008 did some damage to the Iowa Memorial Union, but it will be fully restored in 2015 with even more dining options and study spaces for students! Other dining options are available in the dorm halls. It's a little spendy (to be expected with on-campus dining), but the food is good and there are lots of options.

    Dorm Life

There is always something to do in the dorms. Student organizers constantly hold events throughout the year as well as organizing movie nights and smaller social gatherings. Dorm living is a great way to make new friends!

    Academic Rigor

The courses at U of I are challenging, but the take-away is well worth it. I have learned so much in my program that I know I will be able to apply to my future profession. An education from Iowa is more reputable than most students realize.

    Tips for prospective students

Take your major coursework, but be sure to take advantage of the wide array of electives offered at the university; they will teach you so much. Get involved! The university is home to hundreds of student-run clubs and organizations, and there really is something for everyone. Don't be afraid to talk to your instructors outside of class. The instructors here are incredibly helpful in resolving problems and making sure you get the most out of their classes (Plus, they love to write recommendation letters for students they know!).

    In three sentences

The University of Iowa is home to a diverse student population. It employees some of the best and brightest faculty in the country, but the best part is that many of those faculty members have real-world experience in their fields. The atmosphere at the University of Iowa makes it easy for every student proud to be a Hawkeye!
