Great for these types of students

If you want a pleasant learning atmosphere while at the same time live an active student life, the University of Kansas is perfect for you. Even for those who are a little bit shy such as I was, the University of Kansas student staff has many activities and events to get rid of that shyness as you meet many people and make new and good friends very quickly. If you are also looking for high-class facilities such as lecture halls, gyms, and pools, the University of Kansas is a perfect candidate. They have a three floor recreation center, including an extravagant rock-climbing wall where students can go to work out. They also have two pools in a different building along with a diving platform. Each dorm also has a lobby generally consisting of a pool table, piano and TV.

    Tips for prospective students

One real positive of the University of Kansas is that it has one main campus. This is effective in that it is not necessary to take a bus or train from campus to campus to go from class to class. The on-campus buses provide efficient transport to many students, or many times, with the campus being so active and lively, students simply walk from lecture hall to lecture hall.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Kansas is pretty reasonable on their costs. As an added bonus, several times throughout the academic year they have special events that students can go to for free food, t-shirts etc.

    Am enjoying being here

As with all colleges, the first couple of weeks can be quite nerve wracking. However, once you make a couple friends and get out of the dorms, The University of Kansas can be quite the place to learn as well as to spend time with friends. I actually wish I could head over to Lawrence to spend some time there!

    Am learning a lot

As with other colleges, freshman year generally means class sizes in the hundreds. However, the professors and teaching assistants do a relatively good job on relaying information to classes of these sizes. Most of my classes used PowerPoint slides which made it easy to follow along while the professor was lecturing.

Achievers, Learners, Shy/Timid, Friendly, Open Minded, Excited about life Students

    Tips for prospective students

Keep an open mind and a friendly smile and you will go far. And don't bring your entire room from home with you on move in day:)

    Bang for the buck

The amount of help offered at KU is nothing short of AMAZING!!! they offer outside learning sessions, discussion groups, learning labs, and even tutors for a more one-on-one approach. They even offer this thing called take a teacher to lunch and basically the school buys you and the Professor lunch at a restaurant downtown and you can talk to them and let them get to know you one on one or even with a friend....I haven't heard of any other University doing that!!!

    Am enjoying being here

The campus life is B-E-A-UTIFUL. The trees in Autumn are magnificent and Potters Lake is always a cool spot to hangout, and if you're into working out the Rec Center is above and beyond anything you could ever imagine...including the rock wall;-) The massive amount and backgrounds of students coming everywhere from Russia to Kenya and beyond in overwhelming in a good sense. You have such a vast melting pot of ideas and religions that all you have to do is be open and remember that everyone is connected through the same purpose of getting a better education and you'll make friends in no time...seriously I made like 15 REAL friends whom I still talk to today and half are across the world right now!!!

    Am learning a lot

In your Freshman year you will be dealing with mainly Teacher Assistants or T.A.'s, now they know a great deal, but they still don't have all the knowledge of a Master or Ph.d Professor.

Great for these types of students

The University of Kansas is great for Pre-Med students; their Medical school is one of the best in Kansas. It is also great for students interested in a variety of arts.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to visit the campus. While beautiful, it does have numerous large hills that may make getting to class every day difficult for some.

    Bang for the buck

A little more expensive than Kansas State University, but exceptionally reasonable on the national level. Tuition (not including room and board) is right at the national average presented by the College Board's website. KU provides numerous student services for the tuition fees that make it well worth the cost, including a newly renovated Rec Center, free access to city-wide bus transportation, as well as on-campus transport, and many social opportunities, such as Hawk Week, which includes a free concert.

    Will enjoy being here

A beautiful campus with a bustling student life. The University of Kansas not only has one of the more solid academic programs in the state, but is settled in a town with an incredible downtown and numerous social opportunities, varying from a strong sports program (especially basketball) to an amazing variety of live music.

    Will learn a lot

I am excited to begin my education in Political Science at what I understand to be an extremely well-balanced institution. While a common concern of Political Science classes is that a professors bias will directly influence what a student learns, it is my understanding that the University of Kansas' Political Science department prides itself on giving students the information they require for further education and careers in Law and Government rather than personal opinions.

Great for these types of students

KU can be a perfect fit for anyone... they just have to find their place in the Jayhawk family.

    Tips for prospective students

Tip #1: Go to your teachers' office hours. You'll end up being in at least one HUGE class before you matriculate, and if you make yourself known ahead of time, the teacher will be more likely to listen to your troubles and help you out... who knows, maybe that B+ can be changed to an A-. Tip #2: Buy an All-Sports Combo. Unless you plan on attending less than 15 games during the year, this is the way to go... there're around 7 football games and oodles (yes, oodles) of basketball games to attend. I made the mistake of not purchasing the combo this year, and have only attended 3 football games (yeah, no basketball games yet...) thus far. Trust me, it's worth it; the games are a ton of fun, and a huge part of the college experience. Tip #3: Learn the bus routes. I made the mistake first day on campus of climbing onto a bus unaware that it was the wrong route. I ended up being dropped off on the opposite side of campus, no idea where to go (also, I had just picked up my books, so I had to trek all the way back across campus with the things). Fortunately, a very nice young man offered to assist me with carrying my books, but I only had one block left to walk... ugh. I still let him help me though, and he's now one of my close friends at KU. Tip #4: Be prepared to suffer the hills of Lawrence, KS. KU is set on hills, and walking from class to class the first week or two is torturous; I wanted to detach my legs from myself, because they weren't used to walking up such steep inclines. Ever. (On the plus, though, you end up with nice, toned legs.) Tip #5: Make the most of being a Jayhawk. College only lasts for four years, so enjoy it while you can and make as many friends as possible; I'm only a freshman right now, but I know that I've formed friendships with people that will last a lifetime.

    Bang for the buck

KU is the most expensive public university in Kansas... and it's beautiful and wonderful and what-not, and I love it... but, honestly, in relation to whether it's worth the money... no. I feel as though I'm going to a $20,000/year school and receiving a $10,000/year education. I was granted a full-ride to KU, and if not for that I would be at another school; I'm having to pay for everything (which I don't mind), but without that scholarship, I couldn't afford to be a student at the University of Kansas.

    Am enjoying being here

I love KU, no questions asked. When you're at KU, you can tell immediately that there's this sense of family and connectivity; the only person who keeps you from being involved is yourself.

    Am learning a lot

I'm in the Honors Program at KU, so I have the opportunity to take smaller, more one-on-one classes; it's a huge plus, and it makes learning a lot more fun. However, I'm also in non-honors classes as well... my chemistry class has over 800 students in it, making for a distracting and noisy environment; it's much harder to focus and learn when in an environment like that.

    Campus Safety

campus safety is extremely important, and this university makes sure of it. there are emergency phones all over the campus, lit up by a blue light, and every student at orientation is given two numbers to contact a safe ride home should they need it. one is literally called safe-ride. safe-ride is comparative to a free taxi service, but their only duty is to take students home. should a student feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar with the area they are in, safe-ride will pick them up and take them home. there is also safe-bus. this is also a free service provided by the university. there are many bus routes that constantly run in and out of the campus area. they, just like safe-ride, are no questions asked, and will safely drop students off at their desired location.

    Clubs and Activities

there is a club for practically everything at the university of kansas. there are hundreds to choose from, and definitely one for every type of student. clubs that have to do with a students intended major are very exciting, because they get you out into your desired field before graduation.

Great for these types of students

the university of kansas is great for the type of student that wants an amazing, life changing education, and all the college spirit and community to go with it. it is for the type of student that drools over the idea of the college experience rather than just getting it over with. the university of kansas is a place for a student that truly wants to be there, and will immerse him or herself in the culture it comes with.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

an unusual tradition the university of kansas has is waving the wheat. at football games, when our team scores a touchdown, the entire crowd of fans raise their arms into the air, and wave them to the left and right. when a field goal is scored, the fans do the same thing again, only faster. this is supposed to represent what wheat would look like blowing in the wind, and since every single fan does it, it truly looks amazing.

    Bang for the buck

the university of kansas is everything a person could want in a college. it is truly the full package, with the courses, schooling, opportunities and amazing atmosphere at top notch. every penny spent on attending this amazing university is a penny well spent (and the financial aid office will make sure you fully understand exactly what your spending those pennies on).

    What to do for fun

besides the hundreds of organizations and clubs the university has to offer, there is also other recreational activities students can get involved in. there is a bowling alley in the student union, and a rec center for maintaining physical fitness, and participating in things from rock climbing and fitness classes, to intramural sports and renting camping gear. getting a all football/basketball sports pass is a must, the basketball games especially are a ton of fun, and can get very expensive otherwise.

    Food and Dining

there is a large variety of types of food that this university offers it's students. there's healthy food and junk food, vegetarian options and a wide array of snacks. you can always find a new meal to try at one of the universities many food courts and restaurants. many food places are open twenty-four hours a day, which is great for our late-night studiers.

    Dorm Life

dorm life is great at this university. it is close to campus, and in a convenient location to the libraries and recreational center. they are clean, safe, and allow you to meet many new people, especially within your first year. the dorms are all very close together, which makes it easy to gain new friends from all over.

    Academic Rigor

at the university of kansas, due dates, for assignments or exams, are set. for some courses they vary, but for large ones, missing a due date almost always means zero credit. professors expect that as adults in college, you should be able to handle your own schedule, and plan accordingly.

    Tips for prospective students

new students to the university of kansas should utilize all the tools the college has to offer. there is always someone who's job is to make sure you fully understand your schooling, inside and out. attend extra help lectures for classes, go above and beyond a professors expectations. college is four years of your life, that could make up what happens with the rest of them. study as much as possible, get ahead. it pays off to put all you've got into your work.

    In three sentences

the university of kansas offers a quality education while also teaching it's students important life skills. it is a place where one truly has the freedom to explore their interests, and it has all the tools they could possibly need to do so. the university of kansas is a place for growth, community, and spirit.

Great for these types of students

Those who are craving a small-town feeling with a big-city appeal, and those who are looking for a great education in a very diverse setting.

    Tips for prospective students

KU is a great place to learn, but you can't spend all of your time partying and expect a great GPA.

    Bang for the buck

KU is a great deal (especially for in-state tuition)--it has a highly rated Journalism department, and foreign language departments, and education department, and linguistics department...the list goes on and on.

    Am enjoying being here

KU is a beautiful campus (especially in the fall!), and there are more extracurricular activities than you can shake a stick at. Diversity is rampant in the KU student population. Basically, there is something for everyone here.

    Am learning a lot

Although KU has quite the reputation of a party school, it's not impossible to have a lot of fun AND receive a quality education. Also contrary to popular belief, every single class does NOT have a roster of at least 1000 students, and if a class does have a large amount of students, there is usually a personalized discussion section once a week offered for those who would like a smaller class size.

    Bang for the buck

A major factor in choosing a college is the financial part of it. A main reason why many students come to this college is because of the price that it comes with. All around the world, students try to gain entry and it pays because if any other college were to charge for the kinds of things around here, you would need a fortune. Fortunately, KU is not one of those colleges.

    Will enjoy being here

The campus is so amazing, the beauty of the scenery and the hill is spectacular if you ever stand on top of it and watch everything. the scene must be the best part around here.

    Will learn a lot

It seems as though every type of major or minor is here. I am planning to go here and not too many other colleges have the degree I want to earn.

People who enjoy being around other people

    Tips for prospective students

Go through rush. You meet great people who will share some of your goals. Just get involved and I will guarantee that you will have a good time and learn all kinds of new things.

    Bang for the buck

I think it is a little expensive I mean for being out of state you are looking at paying about $27,000.00, which is really only ten grand short of an IVY league school haha

    Am enjoying being here

KU may have the most beautiful campus. My beliefs of Kansas before going to school here was that there was corn as far as the eye can see, but actually the campus sits on a set of winding hills that make for a great sunset. The nightlife is great there is literally always something for every type of person in Lawrence.

    Am learning a lot

Being from out of state really makes you learn things you probably never knew before hand, and of course if you go to class you are bound to expand your mind.

Great for these types of students

In-state students definately. Also those who don't mind a mix of big lecture halls and small personal classes. Great for students who like intramurals since KU is a big 12 school and those who want a good education at an affordable price. It is not really necessary to enjoy small towns (Lawrence is a small town) because Kansas City and Topeka are only about thirty minutes away.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to KU and walk around to experience what college life is like here. Apply early for financial aid if you are eligible because KU has alot of great scholarship opportunities. Develop a personal relationship with your professors, you will learn more and enjoy your classes a lot more, not to mention you network with people you can use as references down the road. Don't be afraid to go Greek. The greek life here is incredible and you develop a close relationship with equally motivated students who you have access to 24 hours a day.

    Bang for the buck

In-state tuition is relatively cheap compared to other schools you can go to. It is about $263 dollars per credit hour along with some campus fees but you will be surprised how much you get. You get unlimited access to the beautiful student rec center and get discounts to all the Lied Center events, not to mention you can ride the bus to school saving on gas expenses. Also, the community gives lots of discounts to students all you got to do is show them your student ID.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy the atmosphere of KU. I like how easy it is to commute and how affordable it is to live in Lawrence. I think it is so great how on a bench in front of the Kansas Union you can see a professor with a coat and tie sitting next to a student who is playing guitar. I feel like it is so easy to make friends and everyone seems friendly and open to tell their story. I love the Jayhawk culture like going to a KU basketball game and love the support from the community. My favorite memory from last year was doing the Axe Undie Run down Jayhawk boulevard.

    Am learning a lot

I am just starting sophomore year at the University of Kansas. I am taking business courses here as part of my endeavors to receive a business degree. Last year I learned so much about the business field and was impressed by how knowledgeable my professors were. My favorite class last year was Financial Accounting with Tim Shaftel. I very much enjoyed learning how businesses monitor their finances and how cash flows in and out of a business. KU has an amazing business school and it is evident they want you to succeed here.

Great for these types of students

Be dedicated, hard-working, and have a passion for your field - and willing to ask questions!

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely apply for the honors program: as a transfer student I had few general education classes left, but honors program membership can let you exchange a four-hundred-student GTA-taught class for a ten-student professor-taught class. It also gives you access to the kitchens at Nunemaker Hall, which can come in handy. Try to get as much of your homework done in between classes as possible. That will allow you to keep your books on campus instead of hauling them up and down all the hills (as well as keeping your evenings free for long-term projects, or even the occasional non-school-related activity.) Take advantage of all the free art on campus. The music program hosts either a student degree recital or a visiting artist's recital nearly every night, and the campus art galleries and academic club exhibitions are wonderful. Lastly, get used to walking up hills and staircases - my calves were in a continuous cramp my first two weeks!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is ridiculously high, even for in-state residents (some international students with whom I have shared classes are more or less staking their parents' entire livelihood to pay tuition) and books are also expensive. A number of my professors have attempted to lower costs as much as possible by going without textbooks or using non-institutional texts; the musicological colloquium, a required class for musicology graduate students, is run unofficially in order to save the students tuition costs. Local cost of living is not high, but tuition is still prohibitively expensive and, I suspect, keeps many from attending.

    Am enjoying being here

The other musicology students are kind, interesting people who are always happy to give me feedback and assistance. The professors, as I already mentioned, have been dedicated and enthusiastic lecturers. The atmosphere of Lawrence as a whole is welcoming to students - perhaps to the exclusion of non-students. However, the general studentry is just as ill-mannered, unmotivated and occasionally drunken as anywhere. I have had a number of discouraging encounters with such students, which have taken something away from my enjoyment of my college experience, and, in one instance, made me afraid for my safety.

    Am learning a lot

My classes have been very informative. I find that some of the more general classes (maybe 400-level and lower) mostly go over information I already know. However, all my instructors have been extremely well-informed about the intricacies of their subjects. All my professors have been willing to take time to look over even my small research projects and papers; this includes instructors outside my field. The library resources are excellent, especially in Spencer Research Library. However, the library hours are rather limited (they only open at 8:00 AM!), and the restrictions on checking out audio recordings can make studying for music history tests difficult.

    Campus Safety

The University of Kansas campus is very safe and is continously well-monitored by campus police. There are emergency phones located throughout the campus, and there are many safety services offered by the university that are completely funded by school tution and fees.

    Greek Life

There are many different fraternity and sorority houses on campus that provide a connection for students of many different identities. Greek Life at KU provides students with scholarship, leadership, community service, philanthropy, and social opportunities and provides students with a network of what will most likely be lifetime friends.

    Clubs and Activities

Extra-curricular activities at KU are plentiful and it has both great student leadership opportunities as well as a top-notch Greek life program.

Great for these types of students

The University of Kansas is great for students that plan to work hard, are self-motivated, and are self-starters. It is a place to flourish and to find your personal identity.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

A tradition at the University of Kansas is that you are not supposed to walk under the Campanile (a campus monument) until graduation time. If you do, your academic life is supposedly doomed.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Kansas offers student a top-notch public education at a four year school while at one of the lowest costs in the country for 4-year public undergraduate educations.

    What to do for fun

If your looking for fun at the University of Kansas, there are many options to suit everyone's taste. From the Rec center, Mass St., the Kansas Union activities, and watching KU sports, there is never a dull moment.

    Food and Dining

Dining opportunities are plenty at KU and because the campus is so close to Massachusetts St., a popular dining and shopping locale, their are many choices for students to find nourishment.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life at KU is very exciting and offers both social environments and quiet academic study environments. KU offers both public and private dorms, and Daisy Hill is both safe and inviting to live in.

    Academic Rigor

At the University of Kansas, the academic rigor is not proportional to the standards for admittance. Classes are challenging and GPA requirements for professional schools are not for slackers. The University of Kansas has one of the best Journalism, Engineering, and Med schools in the nation, and the academic rigor is higher than some public schools because of that.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are an incoming student to the University of Kansas, do not let the low acceptance standard and low cost fool you. KU has one of the most rigorous programs out of Kansas schools, and it is important for incoming students to be motivated, be a self-starter, and learn from their mistakes.

    In three sentences

The University of Kansas has great professional schools with devoted professors who take education beyond the classroom. The campus environment is beautiful and the students population is very active in organizations. The University of Kansas houses one of the best basketball teams in the nation and is a nationally renowned international research school.

Rent Your Books! Pizza Shuttle is very cheap

    What to do for fun

Kansas City is only 30 minutes away, there are endless possibilities in that city. Clinton Lake is only a couple minutes away from the KU campus. Mass Street has many things to eat at and have a good time at.

    Food and Dining

There is many places to eat at on Mass Street, and there is many fast places to eat also. Pizza Shuttle has good pizza. 3 Spoons good frozen yogurt. Tryyaki has good Asian food. Chipotle always seems to be the cheapest and best Mexican food.

    Dorm Life

Daisy Hill is where most of the dorms are, although there are many other halls across campus. It is a great place to find and interact with other people with similar interest as yourself.

    Academic Rigor

Being a engineering major, my class are pretty tough. Although, that can be said for any major at respectable levels. Compared to community colleges, KU is a little more work. KU has top notch teachers in many departments that have been doing their work for a long time.

    Tips for prospective students

#1 - Plan your academics accordingly, do not skip classes that may seem pointless too you. Every class is a piece to the puzzle, they will all come together and fit in the end. #2 - Activities are important; not so much in your college career, but finding and interacting with other new people. #3 - Find Scholarships any way possible, luckily KU tuition is very low compared to other schools. It is always nice to not have a massive debt when you graduate.

    In three sentences

The campus is very beautiful, and well maintained. Basketball seems to be in the blood of every student at KU, everyone seems to enjoy it. It is a great school to attend, and be part of the Jayhawk culture.

Great for these types of students

KU is great for students that love to go out and have a good time, but also that are dedicated to their schoolwork. We have a lot of fun here, and there are a lot of late nights, but people care about school too.

    Tips for prospective students

Save up!! And prepare in high school. You're definitely going to want to have money saved up, and you definitely want to get ahead and take care of everything you can while in high school. Take some AP classes or dual credit courses to get ahead of the game.

    Bang for the buck

KU is truly awesome. The teachers are great, the kids are awesome, but it's expensive. Granted, all colleges are expensive, and KU's pretty average in price range. I feel like I pretty much get my money's worth here.

    Am enjoying being here

The KU campus is great. There are a lot of really nice people, and there is always something to do. I don't even need to leave campus and I can have an amazing time. When I'm here, I feel like I'm at home.

    Am learning a lot

So far, I've had amazing teachers. It's a much different atmosphere than in high school, but the teachers are just as helpful. None of them are setting you up to fail; they all want you to succeed just as much as you do, and are more than willing to go out of their way to help you. Not to mention the classes are very educational, and I feel like I'm actually learning!

    Bang for the buck

As far as tuition goes, KU is pretty affordable. I was able to cover over half of my costs for the first year with scholarships I earned and the other half with loans I applied for. My planned expenses for freshman year look like they are going to be right around $21,000. For a four-year university, this is pretty normal. And from what I've heard about KU (and seen personally) it will be worth the cost.

    Will enjoy being here

College is what you make of it, and I intend to take the most out of it! There are tons of clubs and activities to get involved in. Personally, I am joining the scholarship hall community and I look forward to all the events that they host.

    Will learn a lot

I am eager to join this rich academic environment and experience all the university and community events. I have no doubt that I will love my college experience here at KU.

Great for these types of students

KU is more liberal than other colleges in Kansas and is very accepting of all kinds of people. I would have no problem attending the school if I were gay, muslim, or any other person.

    Bang for the buck

They have scholarship halls that are for serious students who work some to pay off housing. KU also has scholarships for students with alumni parents

    Will enjoy being here

Their campus is so beautiful and the bus system helps out so much. Their historical emphasis on the buildings during college visits is interesting and the traditions are fun.

    Will learn a lot

The tour guides at college visits are so knowledgeable and are so helpful in sharing how KU can fit for your studies. They have a great medical program and work to help you decide your future decisions.

The money may make it stressful, but friends that I will acquire will make everything worth it. I've heard of a free exercise building for students..i don't exercise, but i sure do like Rock walls =] KU and everything around it has so much to offer for people.

    Will learn a lot

KU is known as one of the best schools in kansas..sure thats not saying much to many, but for me it means a lot. Learning will be a challenge in some classes I'm sure, but it will be worth it!

If you are looking for high-class facilities such as lecture halls, gyms, and pools, the University of Kansas is perfect for you. They have a big recreation center, with a real nice rock-climbing wall where students can go to work out. They also have two pools in a different building along with a diving platform. Each dorm has a lobby with things like a pool table, piano and TV. There is also lots of off campus communities that are very secure, have work-out rooms, study rooms, pools, etc. The only thing that I do not like is that I am from Kansas City, MO and still have to pay out of state tuition. I believe there should be some consideration for surrounding states in a certain radius so that they could pay in state tuition. I am closer to KU than any other major Missouri college.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the campus at KU. There are many, many activities and events to keep you busy in between studying. It is a great place to meet new people.

    Am learning a lot

KU is a very big University with may classes and majors to choose from. Whatever you are looking for, you will more than likely find it at KU. The lectures are big and you do have to study but I am learning a lot.

Great for these types of students

Great for students that want to try hard and get a good education and want to experience a fun college experience. The campus is easy to understand, classes are challenging, teachers offer lots of outside help, there are a lot of student activities, and everything from tuition to books is reasonably priced for a four year institution.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't slack off your freshman year. Go to the library to do homework, papers, or projects, it helps a ton. If you need help don't hesitate to ask your professor or the TA.

    Bang for the buck

    Quite reasonably priced.

    Am enjoying being here

This place has a beautiful campus and the food's great.

    Am learning a lot

I learn a lot from the courses offered here, but there is effort involved. None of these courses are to be easily overlooked.

Great for these types of students

*Undecided students *Students interested in many areas of study *Students who want to Study Abroad (I have already found a great program that fits with my french studies.) *Transfer students *Non-traditional students (I've made several acquaintances in classes who are much older than normal college age) *Any students, but make sure you have a 4 year plan if that is when you want to graduate.

    Tips for prospective students

*Learn the fastest way between your classes. Sometimes you can save yourself from climbing tons of stairs as well. *Go to class. Often times professors present information in class that isn't available outside of class. *Try to make a personal connection with your professors (or TAs). by either asking appropriate questions during class or visiting their office hours. *Cuisine-2-Go can save you from ridiculous food prices at the non-meal plan places to eat by classes. You can have 2 a day. *You can use Cuisine-2-Go to also get smoothies from The Sudio, which are delicious. *Dan is the best bus driver. He will definitely brighten your day. You'll know him when his bus gets near. *Make connections with other students through joining clubs or just talking. I promise striking up a conversation with someone you don't know is less awkward than it sounds. *As you probably know, KU is known as a drinking school. However, if you don't want to drink, don't drink. You'll be surprised as to how many people do not drink here (it's higher than you expect). Make some friends with people who don't drink to make it easier to not be tempted.

    Bang for the buck

As a transfer student, I was not offered scholarships, even though I was offered a lot when I would have been an incoming freshman. I did get some grants and took some loans, but the price is still pretty brutal. On top of that, I have to pay a ridiculous amount just to have access to internet, which is VITAL in college, as most professors use blackboard. The meal plans are also really expensive and inconvenient. The dorm rooms (I have a 4-person suite) are really nice though, and have more than enough room. You really have to watch how you spend money here, but it definitely could be worse.

    Am enjoying being here

The students here are genuinely friendly. Many times I've been involved in conversations with people I did not know at bus stops, in hallways, in elevators. People are pleasant and welcoming. The campus (though a challenge to walk the hills) is beautiful and the dorms have excellent views. The buses reduce the walking on the hills, but be warned they fill up and often times it's faster to walk to class. As a transfer student I am pleased to say I feel like I truly belong to this university.

    Am learning a lot

I am a transfer student and was worried about repeat information in classes. I am very surprised thus far as all of my classes are teaching me new concepts. Granted, I am undecided and taking general classes just to see what interests me, but I am still learning quite a bit. The math is more advanced than at my previous university, and even though I'm technically retaking a course, within the first 3 weeks we have almost completely covered what I learned the last semester at my previous university. This class is extremely challenging, but I am learning a lot. I spent quite a bit in the room run by TAs specifically set aside for help with this math class. It is a relaxed environment and it really helps me to understand confusing topics covered in class. All of my professors (or GTAs) are very passionate about their subject, and it is quite evident in their teaching, which in turn excites me. I am enjoying going to class every day (something I did not enjoy at my last university). As a new student here, I feel I am adequately challenged and getting a chance to try various subjects out.

Great for these types of students

All types of students can get an education at KU. The straight A student can excel as well as the moderate student. Workshops, mandatory study hours at fraternities and sororities help the fun loving students keep on track. The teachers are there for the students and will help if asked by any student. I have received advice from many of my teachers on ways to help me study and gain the most out of their way of teaching. Help is always there if you ask for it so any type of student can do well.

    Tips for prospective students

The best tip to give any prospective student is to attend all functions provided by the school. It has so many things to offer that you must attend their seminars to understand how many helpful things the college is providing.

    Bang for the buck

The cost for going to this school is somewhat expensive but well worth it. They have a program for freshman which locks in the tuition price of the first year and is the same for four years. This helps for budgeting each year. The education you receive when it is all over is priceless and the respect gained by attending one of the best colleges helps with job prospects. Recruiters come to the college looking professionals.

    Am enjoying being here

The atmosphere of the college is that of learning and enjoyment. The campus has much to offer and more than I would be able to get involved with. My age does factor into part of that as I am much older than the usual student. All there is to do and learn from the campus makes it fun to be there and makes me proud to be a student here.

    Am learning a lot

I am a returning student to KU after an intermission of nineteen years. The courses I have taken thus far to finish my degree have been exciting. I have learned a more about professionalism and management in one semester than I have in my previous career. I can identify artifacts from ancient mesoamerica including Mayan, Olmec, Aztec, and Teotihuacan to name a few. I had a refresher course in Microbiology and critiqued a city government on how transparent their actions were to the public body. All in all I would say my first two semesters back were very educational and well worth the costs.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

KU basketball fans are some of the biggest fanatics in the country. Everyone on campus knows at least the starting lineup of the basketball team and many students camp out for weeks before major games in order to get good seats. Some other traditions include walking through the Campanile during graduation, the Rock Chalk chant, waving the wheat at the end of a Jayhawk victory, storming Massachusetts Street after a major Jayhawk victory, and throwing people into the Chi Omega fountain on their birthdays.

    Bang for the buck

KU is a great university financially, especially if you are from Kansas or are from a state that is part of the Midwest Student Exchange.

    What to do for fun

Lawrence is a traditional college town. KU is home to one of the greatest basketball teams in the country and camping out for basketball games is a must. There are also concerts, plays, and museums to go to. Lawrence is about 30 minutes away from Kansas City, where there are some other diversions such as an amusement park (Worlds of Fun), a zoo, shopping, among other activities.

    Food and Dining

Mrs. E's isn't the greatest. If there hadn't been a salad bar, I probably would have starved. The service is poor and the food is often overcooked, undercooked, or incredibly greasy. Nevertheless, the dining hall food is convenient and open from 7-7:30 Mon-Fri. One thing that was annoying is that they didn't serve breakfast on the weekends, which for early risers is a nuisance.

    Dorm Life

My experience in the KU dorms was absolutely wonderful, however I'm not sure that feeling is universal. I stayed in a building (Templin) where students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, so one could say I was a little cloistered. However, the students I met in the dorms were diverse and for the most part, incredibly friendly and accepting of new people. The added convenience of on-campus living is hard to pass up. The WiFi during the Fall semester was nonexistent and was still slow during the second semester, but other than that, my experience was phenomenal.

    Academic Rigor

There is a caveat to my rating. I give the University of Kansas a rating of 3 in academic rigor because, if you simply take the normal general education courses, the classes are not particularly difficult. However, there are approximately 100 honors courses offered during the Fall and Spring semesters. Many of these courses have an intense amount of coursework and grades are generally more discussion based instead of test based and one does not need to be a member of the Honors Program to take these courses. Academics at KU can be as challenging as you, the student, chooses to make it.

    Tips for prospective students

Get to know an admissions representative who can help you navigate the messy admissions process. Also, get to know an academic adviser who has experience advising students within your intended major. Enrollment and deciding which classes to take can be tricky at first without the help of someone with experience. Finally, make sure to keep an open mind and be sure to listen to multiple ideas and pieces of advice from different people before making decisions.

    In three sentences

A large, public university that can easily have a small university feel. There are many opportunities for research, work, and leadership due to the sheer size of the university. The academic rigor can also be high if you want it to be; the University of Kansas offers many honors and upper level courses to cater to high-achieving students.

    Greek Life

There is a very active Greek Life community but I did not participate, maybe next year.

    Bang for the buck

It is an expensive campus. There are certainly cheaper ways to do this. But they gave me full tuition so that is why I chose KU over other colleges.

    What to do for fun

Join a club or organization and make sure you attend the football and especially the basketball games. The students are insane fans. It is so much fun.

    Dorm Life

Enjoy the community and get involved with the activities. It will make you feel more connected.

    Academic Rigor

Challenging but Interesting. Get to know your teachers. That is the key to getting help when needed.

    Tips for prospective students

KU has some of the best traditions in the country. One of the big ones is walking through the Campanile on graduation day. The superstition is that if you walk all the way through it before graduation day you won't graduate on time. I don't plan on testing it out anytime soon, I will just wait until graduation to walk through it. Many of our other Traditions have to do with Basketball. This past year we went to the National Championship in New Orleans! From camping out before the games, to newspaper confetti during the pre-game, and to waving the wheat after a win it is just something that everyone should experience. The feeling of being in Allen Field House on game day is unlike any other. I can't even describe it to you! If you are having trouble deciding on where to attend school, go to a basketball game here at KU and you will instantly be hooked. And even if you don't like basketball (like me, unless its KU, I can't watch it on TV, or really watch any other team because it bores me so much) just try it. The sense of community and the fun traditions will hook you just like it did me.

    Food and Dining

Lawrence has the best food of any town I have been too. There are places that deliver until 3am, fancy restaurants, chill restaurants, and just about any type of food you can think of. There are so many that I am always trying to go to different ones, and I have yet to go somewhere that I didn't like. On campus has good food too! If you live on Daisy Hill you will eat at the dining hall called Mrs. E's. The food isn't too awful for mass production standards but it does get old really fast. To make up for it on campus has a place called the Underground where they have a coffee bar called Pulse, Pizza Hut, Chick-fil-a, a chinese fast food place, salad bar, and a healthy wrap, deli bar. All these are really delicious but can be a little pricey. At Naismith we also have our own Dining Hall but our food is a ton better than Mrs. E's its almost like eating a home cooked meal! This is where I eat most of the time and they normally have a good variety of different foods. Lawrence is also under an hour away from Kansas City so if you a looking for something we don't have but you have at home, will probably find it there!

    Dorm Life

I love the dorm life at KU. I spent my freshman year living in McCollum Hall up on Daisy Hill. It is definitely not the nicest hall to live in but it is one of the friendliest. I met a ton of people that I am still friends with today because I lived there. All the other dorms at KU have been renovated more recently than McCollum and have much nicer rooms, but you can't go wrong with the people you will meet there. Daisy Hill is a little bit of a walk away from Campus, about 10 - 15 mins, but there is a bus system that runs all day that you can use that goes from DH to Campus and back again. I loved walking because it's beautiful but the bus is definitely convenient when it is snowing or raining. I enjoyed living in the dorm so much that I have become a CA aka an RA (a Community Assistant aka a Resident Assistant) for Naismith Hall. Naismith is a private dorm that is not located on Daisy Hill but is basically on campus. Its about a 10 min walk but there is a bus that goes to campus and back from here as well. Its also across the parking lot from our Rec Center, which is awesome. Living in Naismith has been an awesome experience and I have met so many great people. I encourage you to check it out along with the KU dorms when you come to Lawrence for a visit.

    Academic Rigor

KU has some great academic programs. Some classes are a lot tougher than others, but every teacher I have had has been willing to work with me and has helped me a lot when I didn't understand something. The lecture classes are always large but don't be afraid to go and talk to your teacher during their office hours. They love it when students come in and are invested in doing well in their class.

    Tips for prospective students

My big tip that I tell people who are applying here is to apply for the honors program when you apply to the school. I am in the Honors Program and I love it. Each honors course you take has really small class sizes for college classes (40-45 people) and the teachers are always willing to help you. The teachers are always highly qualified and they have real life experience in their subjects. They push you to work hard but it's not in a take over your life over whelming way. I encourage you to look into it!

    In three sentences

The University of Kansas is full of great traditions, awesome teachers, great classes, and some really fantastic people live here. It's located in the beautiful town of Lawrence, KS. There is a place for everyone, and I am so happy to be able to call this perfect college town home.

-Students that are undecided in what they want to do and students who change their minds often -Students looking to experience an awesome Greek life -Sports fans (especially basketball fans) -Those looking to have fun while getting a great education

    Tips for prospective students

-Apply early, investigate various living options -Get the student ticket package! -Come hangout at KU on the weekends to get a feel for life in Lawrence

    Bang for the buck

KU is a moderately priced school, but you do get bang for your buck. Several services such as the bus routes, the rec center, and libraries are very useful and allow you to get the most of your money. One setback is the scholarship money; KU seems to give out much less scholarship money in comparison to other Kansas schools.

    Am enjoying being here

KU has an amazing college life/campus scene. Nothing beats going to the football and basketball games. I am in a fraternity and the Greek life provides you endless social, service, and academic opportunities. There is always something to do, and with 20,000+ students your sure to find plenty of friends or even that special someone.

    Am learning a lot

KU provides students with top professors and programs for you to maximize your learning experience. I took Chemistry and Biology classes this semester which provided extra sessions outside of class to go over material discussed in lectures. Professors relate homework to what is discussed in class and often give you extra resources to learn more in a class.

You have to be willing to seek a group out that you can be close with. Once you find that group, you will have a good support system, whether it be a club, your dorm family or a group of friends in one or two of your classes. You also need to be willing to take initiative speaking up for yourself and talking to your professors. KU is ideal for those who want a larger campus and student body.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early. If KU is your top choice, go ahead and apply for housing as soon as you can, you don't have to be admitted to the University to do so. Since it is too difficult to get admitted to the university, be sure to spend your extra time applying for scholarships within and outside of the university. If you like sports - be sure to buy the sports pass and keep your eye out for the many deals throughout the university and Lawrence!

    Bang for the buck

On-campus housing through the university is expensive and the meal plan is expensive. In-state tuition is not bad. I actually have lots of friends from out of state who come because out-of-state tuition here is cheaper than in-state tuition where they are from. Textbooks from the university are expensive, but they do provide the book information in advance so you have time to find good deals online.

    Am enjoying being here

Lawrence is a great college town. The public transportation makes it easier to get around, and I enjoy the spirit of KU. The whole town supports the university, which is helpful to students. There are great deals, and I enjoy the partnerships between local restaurants and teams. A lot of KU's programs help personalize the college experience at a large university. Rock Chalk Rewards promotes student involvement in non-revenue sports. Hundreds of other campus groups offer close-knit communities for people with related interests.

    Am learning a lot

Being in a specific school with a specific major, I find that most of my classes are right-on-topic, providing information that will be helpful in my profession. All my professors and teaching assistants are knowledgeable and generally make themselves available to help anyone who seeks assistance.

Great for these types of students

ku is perfect for students who are social and enjoy meeting new people everywhere they go. also, students should probably be able to concentrate on the lecture with 1,000 other possible distractions (aka other students). students should also get used to walking to class. trust me, it's worth the walk. the campus is beautiful, especially in the fall when the leaves change colors. students should be able to manage their own time wisely; however, that goes to any college student. it's great for students who are looking for an in-state university, but it has lots of opportunites for foreign and out-of-state students. it's also a great college for those who love basketball.

    Tips for prospective students

parking passes are cheaper if you don't mind parking accross 23rd street at the leid center. they do have park and ride busses over to campus. or you could just be healthier and walk whenever you plan on driving. a relatively cheap, healthy, and convenient snack is the hummus and pita bread that you can find in the studio (under hashinger hall). the rec center is free! and they have an awesome rock wall! i motivate myself to go work out by going rock climbing before running. no freshman 15 for me! want to avoid the huge hills going to campus? walk down engel road, around the st. lawrence center. you come out of the neighborhood by the jayhawk bookstore. bring lamps for your dorms. they get really dark at night. and bring plenty of rugs. the tile floors are cold!

    Bang for the buck

ku's tuition is much more affordable than going out of state or to a private school. additionally, high acheiving students can apply for scholarships. the price was a big deciding factor for me. as the oldest of five kids, i know i can't solely rely on my parents to pay for my college and to prevent having to take out lots of loans, i needed a college with a decent price tag. also, you can find employment on campus to help pay your way. unfortunately, you have to pay seperately for access to internet in the dorms and parking can be expensive (especially if ticketed!).

    Am enjoying being here

Going to a new city without any close friends can be tough. It took me a few weeks to aclimate to the new surroundings, but I'm meeting lots of people. That's one of the cool things about a large school, there's never a shortage of new people! My advice is to go potluck on your roommate (it's an instant way to meet someone!) and get involved in a group. KU has thousands of student organizations. By joining a group with similar religious, academic, or extra-curricual interests gives you something to do as well as helping connect one with the community.

    Academic Rigor

as one might expect from a large university, many of the 100 (freshman) level classes are rather large, especially biology (it's a 1,000 person lecture). however, i don't find this an inconvenience. the professors use microphones and large powerpoint slides to ensure that every student can get the material. also many large lectures have small discussion classes where teaching assistants will go over the material again and are open to answering questions over confusing material. i also think the professors and t.a.s here are very knowledgeable and excited to teach their material.

Great for these types of students

Honestly, KU is great for any type of student. There is a very diverse group of students here--students who live on campus or nearby, students who commute to KU, foreign students, students from out of state, students from in-state, etc. Just about any type of student that you can think of, KU has. With such a large number of students at KU, it is very easy to find people that you can relate to.

    Tips for prospective students

My only tips are to go to class and get involved. There are tons of clubs and groups on campus--check them out! Even if you aren't completely sure you want to join one, just attend a meeting or two to figure out if it is something that you are really interested in. Clubs and other on campus activities are a great way to meet people. You also meet a lot of people in your classes.

    Bang for the buck

College is expensive, but KU is totally worth it. You get a great education, great professors, a beautiful campus, and a diverse group of students. What more could you want?

    Am enjoying being here

There is a ton to do in Lawrence, on campus or in the town itself. Also, Kansas City is just a short drive away which is very convenient. There is always something going on in Lawrence and always new people to meet.

    Am learning a lot

KU is great, there is a huge selection of classes, each varying in size, so no matter what you are interested in, you are able to find a class that fits your interests. There are also a lot of great professors here. For the most part, going to class everyday is an enjoyable experience which can't be said for all other colleges.

KU is a big school, so if you want a big school it's great here. If you want to be involved in clubs, or Greek life, performing arts or sports there are many options on and off campus.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early! If you apply early you can get 1st pick of scholarships, student housing, and enrollment dates. Also be prepared for the hills and the weather! The best thing I could have brought to KU was a good pair of tennis shoes (because you can't drive on campus), a pair of rain boots, and a nice winter coat (it gets pretty cold in the winter). Come visit our campus, it's very beautiful here.

    Bang for the buck

Although college is expensive, The University of Kansas will give you a quality education. You'll pay a fixed rate for four years. The Freshman Four-year Tuition Compact protects you from spikes in tuition and gives you the ability to estimate costs accurately and prepare a budget. KU is among the top 100 of best valued colleges.

    Am enjoying being here

There is so much tradition at KU. From the fight songs and marching band to basketball games and the Rock Chalk Chant. Getting involved here is not a problem. There are almost 600 registered groups on campus and you can even start your own group! Lawrence is also one of the best college towns to live in. Mass Street provides a lot of the entertainment and food and it's very close to campus.

    Am learning a lot

The classes I am taking this semester are engaging, challenging, and fun. My professors try and engage the class as much as they can. I'm in large lecture halls for most of my classes but it's not as scary as it sounds, sit in the front and you'll never notice how many people are in there.

Students interested in Greek life, a strong athletic tradition, who are social or who just want a great college experience!

    Tips for prospective students

-If interested in living on campus, apply for housing early to give yourself a good chance of getting your first choice in residence hall. -Don't skip class, it's easy to get behind and overwhelmed that way. -Get involved in something: Greek life, intermurals, a club, anything!

    Bang for the buck

More expensive than KSU, but still reasonable. The rec center is free to use as it is paid for with some of the tuition fees, there are several libraries to choose from, and free bus transportation is provided.

    Am enjoying being here

Lawrence is by far one of the best college towns as there really is something for everyone. Mass street provides different shopping, dining, and entertainment options for everyone. The campus is beautiful and Greek life is huge here too.

    Am learning a lot

As expected from a large university, many of the general education and prerequisite classes are anywhere in range from 100-1000. The large classes aren't difficult to succeed in as long as you're willing to work hard.

    Campus Safety

All throughout campus there our lamp post with box with a red emergency button. This connects directly to the police. You can talk through them to report an incidence, or if you think you are being follow just press everyone you pass in your walking and they can track where you are. The campus police are constantly patrolling the campus in their brand new charger and are all very friendly and willing to help

    Greek Life

I love the greek life at KU. All the fraternities and sororities really come together and support each other by coming to each other charity events. Being in a house at KU allowed this huge campus to become small and let me meet similar people with similar interest. Go greek!

Great for these types of students

Independent free thinking students. There are so many clubs and organizations to join. You could also start your own all you new is an idea, approval from the university, and a professor to sponsor you.

Moving into all girls dorms is always a hassle. Us women have some much stuff, we could use a little help right? Well on move in day at Corbin Hall all the freshman fraternity boys come by and help carry stuff to your room. All I brought down to my room was my purse. I really do miss those boys whenever I leave or return from a break!

    What to do for fun

Experience a Jayhawk's Basketball game! You have to go through the whole process of the lottery and camping, which may seems a little overboard, but nothing compares to a game in Allen Field House.

    Food and Dining

The food in my door was not so good. However if you do choose to live on daisy hill, you can always head over to Ms. E. Its the largest dinning center on campus and is full of several options. It is available on all meal plans as well, not just for those who live on the hill. Plus is has an ice cream machine!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at KU is a great experience. If you choose to room on a dorm in daisy hill, you are surrounded by a vary of people. I choose to live in an all girl dorm. I love it and have become really close with lots of the girls on my floor. The RA are usually reasonable, just be nice and make friends because it benefit you in the future.

    Academic Rigor

It depends what kind of classes your were taking. The classes in smaller classroom allow more one on one with your teachers and the options to ask questions. In bigger classes your often can not ask questions and the professors does not even know your name or face. However you can always go into office hours and ask questions.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class. Just because you in a 1,000 person lecture hall and the teacher will not noticed you were there, GO! Most don't post notes and then your at the mercy of your peers for help.

    In three sentences

University of Kansas is all about tradition and school spirit. From the famous rock chalk in the last minute of basketball game to walking through the campanella of graduation.

There are many things to do, the Hawk, Bull, and Ranch are great places to socialize. I love going to all of the athletic events and watching the games. There is always something going on!

    Campus Safety

There is always campus police driving around and patrolling the areas so just seeing that makes you feel safe. The Lawrence police department is very efficient as well because they come right away if there is a problem and they are very nice and cordial to everyone. another means of making us feel safe. There are light poles on campus with a red telephone that connects directly to the polic if there is someone in need.

    Clubs and Activities

I am involved in BSU, Black Student Union that not only brings unity to the African Americans on campuses but also students of the Latino, Indian, and Asian cultures. I recently joined the Break Free for Women America group which help girls in relationships cope with abuse. Hopefully more groups come along that fit my personality.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Kansas is full of traditions all the way from chants at a sporting event to Rock Chalk saying that comes from the limestone rock that is under the Allen Fieldhouse. Traditions are built everyday and the ones we have will continue to live on.

    What to do for fun

FUN! when I think of this word I think of Mass street. On Mass street there are restaurants, ice cream parlors, spoken word citing's, and sports bars. This of many is a great place to just hang out with friends. The University of Kansas is known for great parties so that is never an issue. Just going back to keeping and open mind and meeting people your bound to have fun.

    Food and Dining

Here at KU, we have so many on- campus restaurants that are centrally located and very convenient. The dining halls re also great because its big and holds a lot of people and has great variety of food. All the workers are friendly and helpful which also puts KU above a lot of other schools in my opinion .

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is amazing. Living in the dorms is a great way again to meet people and just experience fun activities. College is supposed to be the best years of your life so I recommend everyone to make the best of it. Even though the public showers and sometimes loud noises, doesn't overthrow the greatness of having study buddy access and great memories.

    Academic Rigor

Another tip is to get close with their advisers because they are here to help and see you succeed. I would say have good time management skills to try to stay on top of your studies because there are times when all your classes will have something due at the same time.

    Tips for prospective students

One tip I can truly say is for future students is to come in with an open mind. Simply because of the different cultures that are here. Another tip is to get involved with as many activities as possible. Be active because you never know who you can meet and the connections you can make to further in your future.

    In three sentences

The University of Kansas in my opinion is a big melting pot for students of every ethnicity and every different culture of life. The University of Kansas has great courses as well as great social activities outside of learning. The University is just great all around to become a great citizen.

    Campus Safety

Some places aren't the best lit, but it's easy to plan for that. Over 80 emergency phones campus-wide, which call for a police officer that will arrive in 90 seconds or less. A campus alert system sends out important messages via text and email and displays messages on the website.

    Greek Life

I don't have a personal opinion. About 15% of students participate, so it's definitely here but you shouldn't feel pressured. Get into recruitment (fall for women, spring/summer for men) if you're interested. You don't have to commit and it'll be good to look around.

    Clubs and Activities

Over 600 student organizations. Surely you can find something to do.

Great for these types of students

Anyone, really. There is something for everyone. Social people will thrive here. Academically, the honors program is fantastic, and research opportunities abound. The Lawrence community also has many organizations and businesses to get involved in. More reserved students can be comfortable as well, but I strongly encourage everyone to find at least one way to connect with others. It just makes the experience that much better.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Don't walk through the campanile (bell tower) before your graduation ceremony - or else you won't graduate on time. Enter and leave through the same doorway. If you want to attend men's basketball games, get into a camping group, preferably with some upperclassmen. Make sure your group is reliable and you'll always have a good seat. I mean, there isn't a bad seat in the loudest college arena in the nation.

    Bang for the buck

I'm an in-state student so it's quite a good price in my opinion. I think it's pretty fair for out-of-staters as well. The great thing is the locked-in four-year tuition rate - what you pay as a freshman (cost per credit hour) will remain the same all four years of your attendance.

    What to do for fun

Mass St. is the downtown area with tons of affordable (and ritzier) dining and shopping options, and lots of fantastic local coffee shops. Venture away from Chipotle and Starbucks - try La Familia and Java Break! On-campus, there's Jaybowl which has free cosmic bowling on weekends. The theater department has numerous productions throughout the year available to students. The Lied Center draws comedians and musical acts, usually with discounted student ticket prices. And of course, there are sporting events to attend year round. You could always take a stroll around Potter Lake, visit the art and natural history museums, or see the basketball history museum inside Allen Fieldhouse.

    Food and Dining

Mrs. E's on the hill (for most res halls) isn't bad at all. The Underground and the Market are retail dining options (not your X meals per week), both very popular. Scholarship hall kids make their own meals and have kitchen access in their halls.

    Dorm Life

Again, it's what you make it. Residence halls vary in niceness and newness, but there is something to love about each. Check out the Scholarship halls if you're interested in a more academic-friendly, close-knit environment.

    Academic Rigor

It's what you make it. There are super easy classes and there are super difficult classes. Apply to the Honors Program if you're interested - great professors, smaller class sizes, and often a more innovative approach to the material.

    Tips for prospective students

This is probably a comfortable size if you went to a school with 800 students or more. Buy the $150 sports combo and go to as many home football and basketball games as you can. Find an organization or two to get involved with ASAP - it's the easiest way to find like-minded people and start growing as a student.

    In three sentences

A midwestern university with some 25,000 students, a beautiful campus, and a strong hold on tradition. Excellence in academics and extracurricular opportunities. The basketball is pretty neat, too.

We go to basketball games! The support of the athletic department is phenomenal, but additionally, the town is perfect for going out and doing things. You can go out at night to one of the many bars or clubs, or you can stroll down Mass St. during the day.

    Food and Dining

There are so many places to eat and so many options to choose from. There's something for everyone! And most people eat on campus so there's a great social aspect to dining as well.

    Dorm Life

Living in the dorms was so much fun because of the atmosphere and the people. You become friends with everyone on your floor and a lot of people in your buildings. The dorms become little communities!

    Academic Rigor

It depends on your major, but in general I feel as though all of the curriculum is appropriate, and that I always have a chance to succeed within a class.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to get your general education requirements out of the way freshman and sophomore year! Most majors have overlap, so if you aren't sure what you want to do, take classes that apply to most!

    In three sentences

    What to do for fun

There's a good nightlife in Lawrence, plenty to do during the day and KU is always offering something to do.

    Food and Dining

Generally good food but it's overpriced! I would recommend you to brown bag your lunch as often as possible!

    Dorm Life

I've never lived in a dorm so I won't know.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are harder then those at a community college but they're not all that difficult. It's hard to generalize classes like this though because it all depends on what kind of major you have whether your classes will be tough or not.

    Tips for prospective students

You don't need a car! KU has a perfect good bus system when you're trying to cross campus for classes and Lawrence also has a good bus system that's free for KU students!

    Greek Life

Greek life is a great part of KU. It offers students an opportunity to excel in scholarship, be active socially, or participate in interesting traditions they otherwise would not be able to take part in. There are definitely good and bad fraternities and sororities on campus, but some Greek organizations have some of the best and brightest students at KU.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    What to do for fun

KU has many different school-sponsored clubs that can satisfy the interests of any student, and if their adventure is tough to assuage, it is easy to start a club of your own. There are a few great bars in Lawrence, and programs, called SafeRide and SafeBus, to protect students and get them home safely. There are also many concerts and other fun activities downtown.

    Food and Dining

KU has multiple dining facilities that offer a variety of choices for the picky eater or the adventurous palate. There are often biweekly specials in the dining areas with fresh new meals.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at KU are very large, so there are a lot of opportunities to make friends in a variety of areas of study and with many different interests.

    Academic Rigor

KU does a great job of offering challenging courses without consuming the lives of its students. At many schools, students do not have a chance to enjoy themselves, because their classes are too difficult. At KU, it is possible to succeed as well as have fun.

    Tips for prospective students

The more credit you have coming into college, the more opportunities you are able to explore; however, if you do not have a chance to get college credit in high school, the core curriculum is very flexible in exploring options. Also, you do not have to decide on a major before school starts; there is a lot of time to decide or change even after you have started.

    In three sentences

The University of Kansas is a great place to discover what you enjoy and want to do with your life. It has an eclectic student body and is welcoming to everyone. The teachers, faculty, and other students share a common goal in improving education in an enjoyable environment.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't park where you're not supposed to because they'll get you every time.

    Campus Safety

KU takes a proactive role in student safety. There are emergency phones stationed at regular intervals across campus, and each individual dorm room must be activated by KU card (or the entire building, in the case of the Scholarship Halls. They are not naive, however, and sometimes things happen (alcohol, theft, et cetera). The entire campus is dry.

There are countless student organizations, from volunteer to political to silly.

    What to do for fun

The basketball stadium is notorious for volume - both decibels and people. Massachusetts Street has two live music venues - the Granada and Liberty Hall (the latter also shows indie films). The student body is well-known for being fun-loving in general. On the weekends street musicians compete for coin on Massachusetts Street.

    Food and Dining

The Memorial Unions house dining halls and restaurants, but I've yet to sample their wares, hence the 3 stars. I simply don't know.

    Dorm Life

There is a myriad of living options, from Stouffer Place (for families) to the Jayhawker Apartments to the Scholarship Halls for single students wanting a smaller, more academic-minded experience.

    Academic Rigor

KU has a reputation for top-tier academics and countless major fields of study, from more well known (Business, Education, etc.) to less (Kinesics, for example - the study of body language). There are professors not only from all around the world, but from local areas.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply to live in the Scholarship Halls for a smaller, more home-like and cooperative (and not to mention less expensive) living environment, if you wish to live on campus. Visit the campus multiple times to get the lay of it - and prepare to walk plenty of steep hills!

    In three sentences

The teachers are immaculate, their are hundreds of options for classes, and there are a ton of student groups on campus. Not to mention the campus is always handing out free things.

    What to do for fun

The campus and the city of Lawrence is full of fun things to do. The campus is always trying to get students involved by writing on the side walks with chalk mentioning academic events, events at bars, Greek events, etc. The bars in Lawrence are a blast and most are walking distance from the main student housing. There is a range of bars for every style of person; Karaoke, Sand bar, Jazz house, clubs, bar and grills, etc.

    Food and Dining

Has the best and strongest coffee drinks i have ever had, economically friendly for poor college students, and provides options for everyone (even vegetarians).

    Dorm Life

I have not lived in a dorm, but my current roommate did and she loved it. She met all of her closest friends in the dorm (other than me), the food was delicious, and comparing the pricing of dorm living to apartment living the dorms tend to be cheaper!

    Academic Rigor

It is extremely challenging, but the school provides many helpful factors like writing centers, tutors, online librarian assistance, etc. The challenge makes it interesting and worth your money. The University is full of intelligent teachers with academic tenure.

    In three sentences

The University has the strongest athletic pride from their students i have ever experienced. The student population is driven and outspoken, you will always see protests going on and new groups to join. The teachers are passionate, intelligent, and helpful.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life on campus seems easy and comfortable. The dorms seem a little small but some of the campus apartments are big enough.

    Academic Rigor

The academic courses KU has to offer are strictly business. I don't mean the courses aren't fun, it's just that your getting what you paid for! When you leave, you'll be ready for the real world.

    Tips for prospective students

Embrace the fact that not everyone gets to attend such a prestigious school. The University of Kansas will stay with you for life.

    In three sentences

There is a spirit of excellence at KU. The campus is beautiful and spacious. Absolutely cannot describe why I want to go here in three sentences.

    Bang for the buck

It is expensive, and sometimes it may not actually be worth it. Especially for out of staters.

    What to do for fun

Activities for under 21 year olds are slim, but 21+ lots of decent bars and clubs. Mass Street is the main place for shopping and hanging. The union holds movies on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights of new releases that are not out on video yet. The basketball games... enough said. They are amazing.

    Food and Dining

Various places available on campus. Delivery and off campus options are great, and open late. The Underground is the most popular on campus/between class cafeteria. Prices are a bit up there, but you can use the campus card with Beak'em Bucks, that can be bought at the beginning of the year and recharged thru out the year.

    Dorm Life

Students protect students in the dorms, and the training of those students is inconsistent and varied. There is an all girls dorm, but mostly freshman sorority pledges live there. There really isn't a sense of community in the dorms, every student for them self.

    Academic Rigor

Really depends on the class, department, and professor. I have had really easy classes and classes that were really tough.

    Tips for prospective students

Register as early as possible for classes for the best classes. Anytime there is a problem, go talk to someone in the prospective office, and don't be afraid to appeal. Most teachers will work with you if you are sick or miss class, just don't do it often, and be prepared when you go to office hours.

    In three sentences

Great traditions are everywhere on campus. The campus is easy to navigate, everything in one location. But communication between offices and students is lacking.

    Campus Safety

There are telephones on every corner of the campus that are available when in need. There is a bus that runs through campus and is available at any hour. Public Safety officers, fire department, and Ambulatory Services are all near by as well.

    Greek Life

The Greek life on campus is a once in a life time opportunity that I encourage you to become a part of. There are several different houses that are right for many different people.

    Clubs and Activities

They have clubs for EVERYTHING! From Intra-mural sports to a tree climbing club to bird watching to martial arts, you are sure to find something you will enjoy.

Great for these types of students

This University is great for everyone. It is one of the most diverse colleges in the Nation. Not only is diversity accepted but it is also encouraged.

As always, the Allen Fieldhouse is a memorable place to attend. Watching the Jayhawks win a National Championship in Men's Basketball is very exciting.

    Bang for the buck

All colleges are going to be expensive, especially if you are looking at a four year university. After visiting other colleges, I have decided you get what you pay for. At KU you really are getting so much more than other schools have to offer.

    What to do for fun

There are over 600 clubs and organizations at the campus. The best thing to do is find one that best fits you and your personality. As they say, if there is not a club for you, create one!

    Food and Dining

There are several different dining options. They have flexible meal plans and cater to the needs of your life. The hours and availability of a good meal is never hard to access.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at KU are safe, clean, and affordable. They are well worth the money and it is a good experience to meet people and interact.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at KU are very important. Professors will push you to success and accomplishment. Many of the programs have the highest employment and graduation rates over any other college.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are seriously considering the University of Kansas, my biggest suggestion is to visit the campus and speak with other students and instructors. Not only will they be able to answer any questions you may have, but they will also be able to give you a feel of what life on campus will be like.

    In three sentences

The University sits on a beautiful campus where it is very easy for students to get involved. The educators, along with other students, encourage and welcome diversity among others. At the University of Kansas, others will do their best to make you feel welcome and excited about your decision to become a Jayhawk!

You pay A LOT for what you get. It could be cheaper and it could do more for the students, but you know that going in.

    What to do for fun

Go to Clinton Lake and the basketball games! Camping is so much fun!

    Food and Dining

It's okay. It's not necessarily the best or the healthiest. There aren't as many options as I would like but still a decent range.

    Dorm Life

I never lived in the dorms, but I have heard that it's a fun and crazy place. Beware of no air conditioning.

    Academic Rigor

It is tough, but good for you. If you are serious about school, KU will be good for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't sweat it. Nothing is ever as intense as they tell you it will be. Remember to have fun and pursue life and you'll be okay. But don't come to class hung over or drunk. That's just dumb.

    Campus Safety

We have safety posts everywhere on campus. Once one pushes the button on one of these police will come in a matter of minutes. We have our own campus police station and several police officers patrolling at all times.

    Greek Life

There are a variety of different fraternities and sororities here on campus. They are all very welcoming of new comers and encourage people to join them.

    Clubs and Activities

There are several different clubs and activities to meet any one person's needs. There are several athletic teams, drama clubs, black student union organizations, anything you may want to take part in KU generally has it.

Great for these types of students

This establishment would be great for those students that want to make the most out of their college experience. Those that want to look back on their college career and know that they not only were academically challenged but had a great time as well.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

It is tradition that every time our basketball team has an important away game such as a final four championship, the students and staff will wait for their arrival at Allen Fieldhouse, our basketball arena. This shows our team members that no matter the outcome we support you all and have your back. That is truly team loyalty.

    Bang for the buck

People always say how expensive college life is, but at KU we do get the most bang for our bucks. The faculty there really wants to make sure you are doing your best and will go the extra mile to do so. I was not excited at first to go to a larger school, but now I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else. There are many libraries on campus where I can do research, the students are friendly and helpful, and the teachers try to make classes fun and not so dull.

    What to do for fun

There are a ton of events on campus to partake in. There is always some guest speaker speaking somewhere on campus. There are times my friends and I will have movie night. There are a ton of campus sponsored events. There is never a dull moment.

    Food and Dining

There are a variety of places to eat at to meet any one's taste. I can be a picky eater, but I am always able to find something. On the rare occasion that you can't find what you like on campus there are plenty of places off campus to eat as well.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are a great way to meet new people. They can be a little outdated, but for the most part they are awesome. There are always great events held at the dorms to help people socialize.

    Academic Rigor

We are passionate about our studies. There are always study groups going on and many tutors available. Professors generally do not like late work, but they can be flexible depending on the circumstances. I threw my back out just before finals week and I was on bed rest for at least three weeks one year. My teachers were very understanding, some of them would not even accept me leaving the house to come take finals before the doctor said it was fine for me to do so. They all worked with me and helped me through that time.

    Tips for prospective students

Do as much as you possibly can at this school. Make the most out of your experience. Join as many clubs or organizations that you have time for because you will only get this experience once. Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone, because chances are you won't regret it.

    In three sentences

At the University of Kansas I have found some of the most helpful faculty and staff. I am extremely shy in large groups of people, but I have never found it difficult to ask for help when I need it no matter the class size. The students there are friendly and you can really tell they have a since of pride attending this school.

The University of Kansas is all about tradition. There are hundreds of traditions around campus but a couple of the most famous are: walking down the hill through the campanile and waving the wheat at sporting events. Every year graduation is held at the Memorial Stadium and all the graduates file through the campanile for the first time (it is bad luck to walk through it at any other time). At football and basketball games, in celebration all the KU fans wave their arms and it looks like the wheat is waving all across the stadium.

    What to do for fun

I am on the track team at KU, so I spend my free time traing and traveling with the team. I am not the best on the team so I am not a full scholarship student/athlete and still need to find ways to pay for school on my own with out being able to work.

    In three sentences

KU is challenging and is a great in-state Univesity to get to know many people from all over the world. The academics are difficult so all the students there are hard workers and really wanting to succeed in life. By being in a such diverce place, students get the opprotunity to meet friends from all over the world.

Lots of choices, and Mrs. E's is great!

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on your schedule and major. You can make your life super easy (and get very little out of GOING to college) or can make it difficult and really learn something.

    Tips for prospective students

Come prepared to learn, avoid Thursday night parties if you have a class to attend Friday, and never go to Abe and Jake's. Talk to your teachers as much as possible and really make connections. Even just introducing yourself once could make you a friend or ally for a lifetime!

    In three sentences

It's a wonderful university with a real dedication to promoting school unity and pride. There is very little handholding, and what effort you put into your college life is what you'll get out of it. Overall a really unique, diverse experience for a fourth of the cost of a private college.

While living in Oliver hall, I see many party people living there also, but most students are really athletic and nice. The rooms are bigger than expected and the food isn't that bad. The best part of this dorm is how easy it is to get anywhere on campus, although it is far from other dorms, its really nice.

When you think of University of Kansas you think of basketball. As well as the atmosphere of game day can be compared to nothing in this world. But if your not to big on sports don't be deterred because the college is also well know for the art's. There theater company puts on the greatest but also keeps up to date with new and upcoming plays. Lastly they offer a range of activities to do on the campus and in town. They show movies just released, they proved bowling, clubs, student body events, fair's. You name it and someone will probably be host it in the near future.

    Food and Dining

As a freshman at one point an time at Kansas i was not looking forward to school dining. As anyone with experience in high school cafeterias would know that they are not up to par with even the fast food chains. But i was quickly corrected when i walked in to the dining hall where they offered an assorted range of food. from pizza to salad, one could pick there lunch or dinner option to there liking. Also one would not be distort that they could not find a quiet place to sit because of the size and luxury of the dining halls.

    Dorm Life

In my mind KU freshman life style's are one of the best with the installment of newly renovated dorm buildings. Most of the room's are well sized and give's you comfort after long day's on campus. Also you will never be bored on a Friday or Saturday night, with upper class man student body setting up a multitude of unique events and outings so that one can be entertained as well as find new acquaintances. University of Kansas has one of the most diverse college student body in the nation and would be pretty hard for some one to not fit in some where.

    Academic Rigor

Kansas has been known for its great program's for law and medicine but it has also come up to be a top contender for other program's. Such as Geology, Art, and Engineering. Even though some might think that all of this major's are almost impossible to finish for an average person. One should not fret because KU has a wonderful and helpful tutor center as well as most all teachers on campus are willing to stay after lecture to help you under the material.

    Tips for prospective students

One tip i would give to future KU students before stepping on campus is to get familiar with the town that surrounds it. In my opinion has one of the best college town main streets with unique local shops and restaurants. Another tip for the future Jayhawker's is to become more aware of your benefits while on the University's campus, with great deals on indoor and outdoor sports games as well as a bus routes that can take you virtually anywhere in the town of Lawrence. You don't even need a car to get around town because of how small it is but I guarantee that you will never become dull once you attend.

    In three sentences

University of Kansas is been a dream college destination for me since i was a child. When i finally attend the college i felt really at home. You cannot beat a campus that has a beautiful Midwest backdrop with a small college town feel.

Very safe campus. Lights are always on and there are alarms every hundred feet if something were to happen.

    Greek Life

Being in a fraternity for the past two years, I would say Greek Life is very big at KU. Most girls rush a sorority at some point, but not nearly as many guys do. Greek Life at KU is currently undergoing a huge change, they recently hired two people whose job is just to make sure no hazing is going on

Taking a swim in the Chi Omega fountain is a must. I started my freshman year there and I plan to end my senior year there. Also, don't walk under the campanile until graduation. There's a myth that if you do, you won't graduate.

    Bang for the buck

Tad's Frozen Ice is amazing. It's $2 for a big cup of shaved ice that is absolutely delicious and they have a hundred flavors to choose from. You can always find something to do or someone to hang out with. If you can't really find anything to do, the Jaybowl is always great and a fun place to go.

    What to do for fun

Mass street is always fun to go to. The stores are all different and have some crazy stuff, especially the general store with the costume shop above it. If shopping isn't your thing, you could go out to Clinton lake or go camping out at Lone Star lake. Of course there's always going to apartment's pools with friends

    Food and Dining

The Underground and the food court at the Union are life savers for those of us who are on campus all day. The food is very good and is priced decently. I hear Mrs. E's is pretty good food but gets old after eating there every day. It is good for getting milk and cereal for your room/fridge though. Tip: Take a water bottle in and fill it with milk. You've got free milk for a couple days.

    Dorm Life

I have lived in a fraternity for the past two years, but I have seen most of the dorms. Half are in fairly bad shape and they all have problems with people pulling the fire alarms at odd hours of the night. I would hate having to get out of bed at 3 am because someone decided they wanted to be funny and pull the alarm.

    Academic Rigor

Most gen ed classes and humanities I have taken are fairly easy. I cannot speak for higher level classes, but any chigher level class is extremely difficult if you don't go to class. So don't skip or you'll fall behind

    Tips for prospective students

Actually go to your professors office hours. They are paid to be there and help students. It also comes in handy towards the end of the semester if you are right on the edge of a letter grade you want. The more the know you, the more likely they are to give you the grade you are looking for

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is well thought out - I personally like the telephones placed all throughout campus. If you were alone, or not, there are telephones that connect to the police so if you feel at any moment that you are unsafe, you can pick up and phone OR press the button at each one and they can track where you are and meet up with you.

    Clubs and Activities

SOOOO MANY CLUBS!!! I believe there are 600+ clubs that appeal to any group, activity, or desire you can think of! I personally am involved in the KU CollegeLife, which is a Christian outreach program - this is the best place, I think, to meet good friends for the rest of life!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

KU is notorious for the traditions at sporting events and on campus. To name a few, there are; Waving the Wheat, the Rock Chalk Chant, and not passing through Campinilie. Campinilie is an especially odd but important tradition. The thought is that until the day you graduate, you cannot walk under and through the beautiful bell tower on campus. If you do so, you will not graduate on time! :(

    What to do for fun

If you are on campus, there were always buses that drove around to popular party spots at night, and also there were movies every month, and a bowling alley in the Union. The University is placed in such a strategic spot - it is located right at the beginning of town, and near many popular shopping and active spots in town. The most popular destination is Mass. Street, where there is tons of food, shopping, and gathering areas for not only college students, but also families from the town as well.

    Food and Dining

Mrs. E's is the most common and popular dining area on campus. Well, actually it is on Daisy Hill, where all of the dorms are. The dining hall always had many different dishes, and often hosted themed nights. There were always endless choices for food, snacks, and drinks, and the staff there was always helpful and kind.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life is a wonderful experience, especially for out of town or out of state students. The dorms automatically immerse you in the student culture. It is actually quite a shock meeting all different kinds of students, some you get along with and some that you don't. But this is a great thing because students learn to pick and choose their friends. Because we are all away from home, mom and dad, we all have the chance to start over, and choose the University life we want to have!

    Academic Rigor

The University of Kansas is by no means an easy education, but that doesn't mean that it is impossible. In the engineering department, I have many difficult classes, but the professors and TAs are more than happy to help, and there are many tutoring opportunities and study places for all students.

    Tips for prospective students

As I had a difficult time jumping in my first year, I highly recommend that students jump into organizations and clubs that interest them. Not only will this help with social aspects, but professors and employers look for the communication and cooperation with others.

    Campus Safety

It is a reasonably safe campus. Though there were a couple incidents, be aware not to walk alone at night and to use your best judgement.

    Clubs and Activities

Join the University Marching Band if you are interested in music or even join organizations such as Queers and Allies. There's organizations for practically anything you want to do. Literally. There's even a quidditch team, which not to brag, but we won the world cup last year!

Hang out on Wescoe Beach. No, it's not an actual beach, but it's where everyone hangs out between classes!

    Bang for the buck

There are many opportunities for free stuff. During Hawk Week, go to every event, since they give out free food and shirts all the time.

    What to do for fun

Join extra-curriculars! It's great to get involved and meet new people!

    Food and Dining

Mrs. E's has the largest food options compared to any other dining halls, but they are repetitive in what they feed. Be prepared to eat lots of mashed potatoes and fish.

    Dorm Life

If you stay in McCollum, expect it to never be quiet. It is considered the party dorm and it is also where all the foreign kids stay. Templin is for all the brains and Hashinger is known to be where all the pot heads are, though it is probably the coolest dorm. The best dorms to stay in would either be Oliver, on the cheaper side, or Ellsworth on the more expensive.

    Academic Rigor

Compared to other colleges, the general education courses here are not easy. It does take effort and they expect much out of you.

    Tips for prospective students

Know how much you can handle and attend every lecture. Though it may seem easier to skip, if you attend the classes will be better and you will do better.

    Tips for prospective students

A little more expensive than Kansas State University, but exceptionally reasonable on the national level. Tuition (not including room and board) is right at the national average presented by the College Board's website. KU provides numerous student services for the tuition fees that make it well worth the cost, including a newly renovated Rec Center, free access to city-wide bus transportation, as well as on-campus transport, and many social opportunities, such as Hawk Week, which includes a free concert. Bang for the buck

Some of the University programs are among the best in the country and at state prices are a great bang for the buck deal. Those who enjoy in-state tuition are looking at about 9K a year, that's less than some private high-schools!

    Food and Dining

There are great dinning options on the beloved Mass street, located in downtown Lawrence. Shops, restaurants, pubs and bars line Mass street and is a frequent weekend location for students looking to relax during free time.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are great place to meet the friends you will have for the rest of your college career (and maybe beyond). University dorms offer great options like tutoring, peer to peer mentoring and Residents Assistants that acclimate you to the college experience. Watch out for food at the dorm cafeteria!

    Academic Rigor

As in all colleges you will soon realize, its no joke. Even those lucky few who went through high school without studying and did well will realize that college is not the place for such luxuries. Expect long nights of study, all-nighters and choosing academics over social life if you are reaching for success.

I do not think there are any unusual traditions.

The University of Kansas is one of the top ranked colleges in the nation. It is very comparable in price to other prestigious universities and I believe well worth the cost.

    What to do for fun

    Campus Safety

Very safe campus. I don't think I've every heard of someone coming to harm on campus. But if it does happen, there is an emergency alert system set up with stations every 50ft or so that allow you to call for help from campus security and police. All you do is push a button and the police are on their way to your location. On top of that, there's a campus alert messaging system you can sign up for that will send emergency alerts straight to your phone with a text message.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many choices, I hardly know where to start! There's a very long list of student clubs listed on KUs webpage. On top of that, there are so many different activities going on that you'll find yourself struggling to decide which ones you want to do. Just yesterday, I saw a giant inflatable race course on the lawn of one of the buildings! That was fun.

Great for these types of students

Anyone that loves to learn in a fun, casual environment will enjoy KU. Also, students looking to do a lot of hands-on work with research and intern opportunities will find plenty of programs to satisfy them. There's really something here for every prospective college student!

    Bang for the buck

The price tag for out-of-state students might be a little high, but I'm not sure. I do know that there are tons of scholarship and grant opportunities available for nearly every student. Speaking with a Financial Aid adviser can help you to find, and take advantage of, as many of these opportunities as possible.

    What to do for fun

Where to start? We have tons of student organizations and clubs, there's bound to be something of interest for everyone. On top of that, we have a great local music scene, lots of stuff to do in downtown Lawrence, and of course, BASKETBALL!

    Food and Dining

I've never wanted for dining options on KUs campus. There are so many great places to grab a bite to eat. There are dining options in three different places, as well as vending machines, cafes, and even food vendors located all over campus.

    Dorm Life

I've never lived in the dorms, so I don't have much to say here. I have heard from others that they're a good place to begin your first year, if you can't afford living elsewhere.

    Academic Rigor

The classes can get challenging. The teachers will make sure they teach you to the best of their ability, but you must be prepared to meet their efforts with equal or greater effort of your own. If you DO struggle with a class, there are plenty of tutoring options available to make sure you succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

You definitely want to speak with an academic adviser before enrolling. There are a lot of classes available, and making sure you choose the right ones for you Major can get be a bit tricky. Also, make sure you walk around campus before your first semester starts, that way you can have a feel for the place before you begin your classes.

When I visited KU over spring break last year, it had such a great atmosphere to it, I felt right at home. Everyone was wearing KU gear, and had such school pride. When we were walking by a group of students on their way to class, one yelled out Come to KU! A home-y feeling led me to know, I needed to go here.

    Campus Safety

There have a been a lot of attacks around my dorm, as well as burglaries within my dorm building. At times walking from class at night can be unsettling but there are buses that run late at night, as well as an organization called Safe Ride who will pick you up and help you to get home safely

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The underground, in the basement of Wescoe Hall, has great food and is a good spot to kill time between classes. Massachusetts Street is also a great place to go shopping and grab a bite to eat with friends. Basketball games and other athletic events are filled with many traditions, that can only be explained through experiencing them.

    Bang for the buck

When it comes to the University as a whole it is rather expensive for the experience. The food is not worth the money that is spent on it. The athletic passes are rather expensive too, but are well worth the money.

    What to do for fun

Athletics are a huge part of what makes KU the school that it is. Attending the games, not just basketball, is a great way to fully see what makes the school so special. There is also great shopping and food on Massachusetts Street and is a popular hang out.

    Food and Dining

The food has been rather unsatisfactory. The meal plans are required and rather pricey, and the food is far less than mediocre. Many times students turn to salad bars and sandwiches or cereal for food. There are not many options for those who are picky or have food allergies. The food that is good is found at the Underground but is not included on the meal plan, and can therefore be kind of expensive.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life depends on which dorm you live in. Some of the newer dorms are very nice and spacious. Others are older and could use some renovations. The enjoyability of dorm life also depends on which type of dorm one chooses, suite style or traditional, because they both provide very different experiences. The newer and nicer dorms tend to be the suite style rooms, and also more expensive.

    Academic Rigor

Classes can be difficult, of course it depends on the type of classes that one chooses to take. Classes sizes vary greatly depending on the level of the course. Some professors are much more interactive and willing to help than others, and therefore can be seen as more difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to buckle down and work hard, academics are trying here. There are a variety of classes some of which are larger and can be difficult to connect to. A lot of thought should go into choosing your living situation, both in roommate and where you live.

    In three sentences

Kansas is a very proud college community. The people are friendly and the teachers typically try to challenge their students. Sometimes dorm life can be distracting but overall it offers a great college experience.

KU is in Lawrence, KS which has many things to do. Downtown Lawrence is a great place to shop along with being only 30 minutes from both Topeka, KS and Kansas City

    Food and Dining

KU offers many dining options whether you're in the dorms or in the student union. The only thing that is not appealing is the pricing of the food throughout campus. I'd make sure to try the Crunchy Chicken Snack Wrap at Brellas.

    Dorm Life

It is what you make it. KU offers many residence halls all across campus. They are on the iconic daisy hill and can be seen from all throughout Lawrence.

    Food and Dining

Typical cafeteria food, unless you live in the Scholarship Halls.

    Dorm Life

Wonderful! The dorms can be a bit loud at times, but living on campus is overall a good experience.

    Academic Rigor

Rigor strongly depends upon what classes you take: Engineering degrees are significantly more difficult than Psychology, for example. Particular classes to dread or prepare for: Thermodynamics, Calculus (all types), Chemistry, and Spanish.

    In three sentences

Foremost, the University of Kansas is a well-rounded school in all regards: Science and Technology, Liberal arts, Humanities, and more. On top of that as many know, it is strongly a Basketball school- the sport is popular here, and fans of KU basketball will have a blast. Aside from that, life and entertainment here is simply good.

Every weekend the school holds free bowling down at the union, and every Thursday they show decently new movies at the auditorium.(also occasional Carnivals, night clubs etc.)

    Food and Dining

Your average dining hall inst the best after while but it does the trick to keep the hunger away but sadly dining halls only are open 7am-7pm, after that don't be surprised if you'll be spending some cash. The upside is the places where you will spend cash on campus have delicious food with great variety from pizza hut to chick-fil-a etc.

    Dorm Life

Housing can be the best of times and the worst of times. You'll meet some of the best friends you'll have in your wing/room but as you guys are having fun don't be surprised if housing contacts you. In lame terms they can be a little strict, but the plus side is on campus housing allows you to meet tons of people building connections.

    Academic Rigor

You know when teachers might say for every hour your in class you should study 2-3 hours outside of class, well here for the most part that's true. Most classes here require you to actually read the required text to past the course that and actually show up. For those not sure yet with what you want to do in college the school also offers plenty career helping classes and for those looking just to pick up an extra

    Tips for prospective students

Students looking forward to attending KU, the academics are actually challenging so don't fall behind. If your a big sports fan, well welcome to the school where basketball is a religion. Campus always feels super safe. KU does a good job of providing night transportation if you feel uncomfortable walking back to the dorms and most places are well lit. There are a reassuring number of patrol cars and emergency phones.

Great for these types of students

People who are self-motivated in schoolwork and outgoing enough to leave the room the first week to meet people.

    What to do for fun

Getting involved in a club is my biggest recommendation. Otherwise, there are plenty of places to go out to for dancing. The Union shows discount movies and SUA organizes tons of events for cheap or free. Keep your eyes peeled for fliers and your ears open to find out about interesting things happening.

    Food and Dining

Mrs. E's is gourmet by cafeteria standards, but nothing changes the fact that it is cafeteria food. It'll always be edible, but the dishes grow old after awhile. Lawrence has a plethora of restaurants to make up for this.

    Dorm Life

I live in Templin and the first year, the girls on my floor weren't terribly friendly, so I spent a lot of time away from the building. This year, I adore my floor. The people are nice and the lobbies are great for socializing. Most of the dorms on Daisy Hill are in good condition.

    Academic Rigor

I've had to put in a decent amount of hard work to maintain my grades, but it's possible to skate by in 100 level lectures by doing the minimal amount.

    Tips for prospective students

The best experiences at KU will happen if you are motivated enough to go to class, get your work done, and get out of your room to meet people. There are so many opportunities to take advantage of on campus.

Throughout your time at KU, you definitely need to go to at least one basketball game in Allen Fieldhouse. It more than deserves its title as the greatest venue in college basketball. Even if sports aren't your thing, the atmosphere and ambiance of the Fieldhouse will give you chills.

    What to do for fun

Student Union Activities provides tons of free activities for students to attend on campus. They provide everything from lectures to chili cook-offs, so there's something for everyone. They also do Campus Movie Nights almost every weekend, where they show a recent movie in the Union and students can get in for $2 with a KU I.D. Definitely check out Massachusetts Street - there are tons of places to eat and shop that are unique to Lawrence.

    Food and Dining

There are several different dining options on campus at KU. The main cafeteria, Mrs. E's, is located on Daisy Hill. This is where most students living in the dorms eat on a daily basis. While there are a variety of options, the food is sub-par. Students can buy different types of dining plans to suit their specific needs, which can ultimately save money. There are also other convenient locations to eat on campus - notably The Underground and The Market - but these require some form of cash. These options are diverse and higher quality than the dining halls.

    Dorm Life

As a student who has both lived and worked in the residence halls, I can say with confidence that KU works hard to provide residents with a safe, studious, and inclusive living experience. Staff creates opportunities for residents to get involved, both with other people on their floor and with everyone in the building as a whole. The dorms are centrally located, and each building has it's own perks and benefits (ex: music practice rooms, student kitchen, laundry rooms, computer labs, etc.). Policies regarding alcohol, illegal drugs and evening quiet hours are enforced to ensure the dorms remain an ideal area for studying and schoolwork. Unfortunately, dorms can get loud during weekends.

    Academic Rigor

I am a Journalism student, and there's a reason the Journalism program at KU is accredited. The higher-level classes are appropriately challenging and have taught me a lot about streamlining my news writing. Unfortunately, the lower-level classes are not very useful or stimulating, which can be frustrating.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to work hard for your grades; classes are more independent in college, which means it's easier to put off studying and do poorer in school. Also, Mass Street is the popular hangout place for most college students. Definitely check out Sylas and Maddy's on Massachusetts Street - their homemade ice cream is legendary.

    In three sentences

The University of Kansas provides students with both an academic education and the true college experience. There are tons of clubs and activities for students to get involved on campus, and there are a variety of majors for all types of students. The Lawrence community is incredibly supportive of the university, and there's plenty of shopping, dining, and entertainment.

    Food and Dining

The dorm food is okay but they have plenty of other places to eat on and around campus.

    Dorm Life

You meet so many interesting people in your dorms and find friends for life living there.

    Academic Rigor

Like most colleges, you need to apply yourself if you hope to do well, don't think it's just going to be an easy A because you go to class, you have to work for it.

    Tips for prospective students

Attend classes, they say it at orientation but you will have times when you just don't feel like going and that's okay... once in a while. Going to class is the best way to keep your grades in check.

    In three sentences

KU is a great school filled with amazing professors and students. There are more than enough opportunities to get involved and meet new people. You can't go wrong with choosing the University of Kansas as your school.

Relatively low cost for a great education and college experience.

    What to do for fun

Bowling, speakers, parties, student groups, movies, concerts, a different fun event almost every day!

    Food and Dining

Great choices at both the underground and the union! Brella's is yummy and the salad bar is great. They also have guides to work with those that have food allergies!

    Dorm Life

Depends on the dorm....some students choose off campus housing and there are many great options there as well!

    Academic Rigor

Study....this is not a breeze-through university. Professors are wonderfully understanding and accommodating, but do expect to actually read and come to class to get a good grade!

    Tips for prospective students

Look up professors on ratemyprofessor.com! Avoid the Underground at noon, it is a madhouse! Bring ice water during the summer for classes as some older buildings don't have AC!

I wish the campus would reach out to Lawrence and work on lighting and such for Mass St. On the Med Center campus, parking lots are often congested and full and individuals park on the streets, where some residents are more hostile than others about students parking.

    Greek Life

Plenty of Greek organizations, from the hardcore party-oriented to academic / community service oriented.

    Clubs and Activities

If you can't find a club, you can start one easily. Lots to pick from.

Great for these types of students

Social people, advocates, artsy people, science-oriented people, health care students as well.

Don't ever walk under the Campanile before you graduate - rumor has it that if you do, you won't graduate.

    Bang for the buck

Great value (in-state, anyway) - the only objection here is that tuition has been increasing as of late due to an unsupportive legislature in Kansas, and I feel like some of the introductory / gen-ed classes are a waste of money compared to taking at a 2-year school.

    What to do for fun

Go to Clinton Lake to get away from it all. Catch a game at Allen Fieldhouse. Have a beer on Mass St. Tons of stuff to do all over town in Lawrence.

    Food and Dining

Two words: Massachussetts Street. Seriously, go check it out.

    Dorm Life

Depends, like any school, on your roommate, but all the Dorms are situated nicely together and in walking range of campus.

    Academic Rigor

Like any school, some classes are easier than others. Some classes just require attendance to succeed, others you need to work at. In the science departments (chemistry, biology, physics, etc) you need to work really hard to stay caught up with all the material.

    Tips for prospective students

Survive the first year and get the gen-eds done with some focus. It will help your GPA.

    In three sentences

KU is a quality school. I attend the Med Center, and have taken many science classes on the Med Center and Lawrence campuses, as well as Edwards. The education for my program is top-notch and well-regarded by professionals in my chosen career path.

    Food and Dining

There are so many places to eat on campus. The underground and the union are the main places to go on campus. The food is normal and great but don't eat too much or you'll definitely get the freshman 15!

    Dorm Life

Every single one of my close friends right now are someone that I met in the dorm! If you stay in your room all the time how are you going to make any friends? My dorm was known to be really crappy but because the room was so bad being out in the commons is how I met all my friends! I wouldn't of traded my dorm experience with anybody!

    Academic Rigor

Some of the classes can be a bit of a culture shock if your high school didn't really prepare you, but the teachers here are very understand and helpful... office hours are something every student should utilize!

    Tips for prospective students

Its really easy to get off track here and just party all day. If you're going to party limit it to just 2 times a week maybe less. Being in college is all about meeting new people towards reaching your academic goal... just don't forget about the academic part of college!

Camping for basketball tickets is the most unusual tradition we have at KU. Basically you join, or form, a camping group and you go to a lottery early in the morning where you draw your spot in line. Then, you have someone hold that spot from generally that moment all the way up until two hours before the game.

    Bang for the buck

I believe that the University of Kansas takes the money you give them, and in return gives you a personal and educational experience you will carry with you for the rest of your life.

    What to do for fun

The University of Kansas is at the heart of Lawrence, which is a city where there is always something to do! Whether your thing is music, movies, art, skateboarding, hiking, or just hanging out, an option is available to you here!

Mrs. E's is the name bestowed upon the main eating hall on Daisy Hill (where most of the dorms are) the food can be good- and it usually is- but there are times you will want to go out to eat, or use The Studio. The Studio is a great alternative to eating at the dining hall, and they accept cuisine cash which is an option of varying amounts of money allotted for different sources of food, provided by different levels of the meal plans.

    Dorm Life

Living at the Dorms at the University of Kansas is a great decision for your first year! It typically costs around the same as apartment living, but it includes Resident Assistance that are there for you when you need to talk about anything on your mind, a bus system that picks you up basically right outside your front door, and an incredible opportunity to make friends that will last.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Kansas is not the hardest school, when it comes to making grades; however it varies from professor to professor. Although it is not the most difficult, it is still not easy and it is still an institute of higher learning and your work ethic should reflect that.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest coming for a visit! You never know if a college is for you until you see the place for yourself! If you cannot physically come visit, then research! Looking at pictures online can be another good way to get a feel for a campus. Its also important to get to know the staff; send an email to the head of the department you are looking into and ask questions!

Everyone here is pretty laid back so i can understand the crime being low. Everywhere i go in Lawrence i leave my car unlocked and nothing has happened yet...knock on wood.

    Greek Life

Unfortunately if you are a bit mature like my self you wont like the greek life here. Its definitely vast and childish. If you lack social skills and the ability to be independent a frat or sorority is perfect for you. The people related to the greek life are typically young and dumb but every now and then you will meet someone cool.

    Clubs and Activities

Its a college it has everything. I believe KU is top ranked in the country for its qudditch! If there is something that you enjoy that is usual or unusual KU will have a club or some sort of organized activity

Every dresses up in ragged clothes and face paint to look like a zombie. They walk down mass st messing with people and stay in character the whole time. Its really great

    Bang for the buck

When it comes to school things are rather pricey. Food and tuition on campus is not the cheapest around. But when it comes to drinks and food off and around campus thats where its cheap. What to do for fun

I drink, celebrate basketball games and hangout with friends. There are a ton of bars around this town. A bar for every type of person no matter who you are. If drinking isn't your thing there are tons of social places like coffee shops. Whats convenient about Lawrence is mostly everything you need is within walking distance so that's a big plus in my book.

    Food and Dining

    Dorm Life

I dont personally live in a dorm but i have heard many things about them. If you are new to campus this is the perfect place to meet new people. The living conditions arent the greatest but thats part of going to college. typically people live in dorms for a year, makes as many friends as possible for the future, then move out.

    Academic Rigor

Classes arent the easiest but they are worth it. I personally am not going to school for a big job or a big paycheck. I am coming to school to learn. Over the past year i have definitely learned a thing or two. Study hard and enjoy yourself and classes will be much more easier.

    Tips for prospective students

Most of you know the traditions if you did the tour or at least interested in this college but for some of you how may not you will catch on quickly.

    Bang for the buck

To be honest every college is just trying to get money from students and this is a top ranked school and they are trying to rip students off in such of; parking, dorm life, food, and classes. Tuition is going up and it will continue to go up until we get out of the recession. In the lie of it all this college is worth every penny.

    What to do for fun

The lottery for getting tickets for the basketball games are fun and the campus keeps activities posted everywhere so you can see. If the school does not know of or have an activity that suits you, you can always start your own.

    Food and Dining

You will find the places that serve the best food and the worst food once you start here.

    Dorm Life

I personally never did dorm life but things I hear are great all except the food so be prepared.

    Academic Rigor

Academics are tough and challenging and will give you a wake up call if you are not ready.

    Tips for prospective students

I would give the incoming freshmen three tips when they arrive here at KU and that is: one get involved (and you will find anything you would ever be interested in doing or joining at KU all you have to do is sign up), two make friends quickly (but even if you don't it's okay... You will), and three have fun, you only get this experience once in your life--make it great.

    In three sentences

KU is a great school where students have the environment to learn, study, get good grades, and make friendships that will last a lifetime. My adventure just started at KU this past semester and it is truly a place to get that true college experience. I would rank this college at a 3.8 on a 4.0 grading scale.
