    Great for these types of students

    The University of Mary Washington is great for students who are looking for a smaller school, and and a school that provides an excellent education.
    Tips for prospective students

    Keep in mind that yes, college years are supposed to be some of the greatest years of your life. Its perfectly fine to have fun in college, but don't let anything distract you from the reason why you're truly there, which is to get an education. Take advantage of all the opportunities made available to you by the school.
    Bang for the buck

    Tuition compared to other schools in Virginia, is really good. For a lower tuition, you're getting an excellent education, a lifetime of experiences, and a beautiful campus.

    It has been said that Mary Washington is a boring campus with absolutely nothing to do. Not true. College is truly what you make of it. There are tons of things to do at UMW; all you have to do is look around. There are over 100 clubs and organizations on campus ranging from Photography Club to African Hand Percussion Club. There is a club or organization on campus that represents everyone’s interests. Even if UMW does not have an organization on campus that you would like, you can create it. UMW holds several dances on campus throughout the year. There is the Homecoming Dance, and the other dances are normally held be sports teams, the different dance organizations, or community service clubs. There are many places on campus to hangout. There is a place on campus called the Washroom, where everyone comes to watch television, play video games or board games, eat, study, or get on the computer. The school has just completed another area for students called The Underground, which is set to open in the fall of ’09. At the Underground, students can come and eat, hangout, and many events will be held there, such as dances, live music, etc. Cheap Seats, an organization on campus, plays movies on campus that are about to be released on DVD, usually every weekend. It only cost a dollar to go see each movie. There are many other events held on campus. Devil-Goat Day, a carnival event, and The Multicultural Fair are two major events held in April. Fredericksburg is about fifty miles between Washington D.C. and Richmond, so that provides some fun on the weekends. We are near Central Park, an area with a lot of stores, restaurants, the mall, movie theatres, an ice skating rink, and many more. Within walking distance is downtown Fredericksburg. There are antique stores, restaurants, ice-cream stores, and events that are held downtown. It’s a fun place to hangout. Also set to open in the fall is the University Café, located downtown. Students will not only come to eat there, but students will get to experience exhibits of art, literature, and music, a goal of the University Café.
    Am learning a lot

    Students at the University of Mary Washington definitely learn a lot. There are about 4,000 students total in the entire school, so over 900 students in each graduating class. It is so beneficial going to a school that is smaller because classes are smaller, making it more comfortable to participate in class and ask questions. Professors also know who you are: you are not seen as just a number to them. Because classes are so small, they get to know their students: the different personalities, strengths, and weaknesses of their students, making it easier for professors to know how to help their students. Freshman year, we take a freshman seminar. There are many different freshman seminars to choose from and the purpose of these classes is to help freshmen adapt to college courses. By the end of that course, students know what college professors expect from their students. Students learn skills that improve their writing, public speaking, and overall participation in courses. There are several tools to help students be successful throughout their four years at UMW. The librarians can help you find credible resources needed for research papers. They inform you about the online databases available for student use, things that students just arriving at the school would not know about. There is free tutoring at UMW as well. There is the walk-in tutoring for chemistry and you can sign up to get a tutor in other courses. Writing and public speaking is very important at UMW. All students are required to take a certain amount of writing intensive courses and speaking intensive courses. To help students improve these necessary skills, there are two resources available to students: the Writing Center, and the Speaking Center. Students bring their essays to the writing center, where tutors, usually all English majors, look over them, and help students figure out what they did wrong on the essays and how to improve it. At the Speaking Center, students practice giving speeches and presentations.

    Great for these types of students

    Those who like the small school feel will love it here. It's big enough that it doesn't feel like high school anymore, but you're able to recognize people and the teachers will get to know your name. There is not a high amount of diversity here, but if the 2009 freshman class is any indication, the rate is quickly increasing. The students here have any and all types of interests, making it very easy to connect with others.
    Tips for prospective students

    Although everyone wants to live in Alvey at first, due to its proximity to the gym and the fact that it has air conditioning, I would not recommend it. The rooms are actually very cold, you will wind up wearing sweatshirts in August. The dorm is isolated from the rest of campus, making it difficult to meet the rest of your class. I would recommend making Russell your first choice for dorms, it has the biggest rooms and closets, along with a lot of handy built in storage space. Try to avoid eating weekend meals at Seaco, with the exception of brunch, because the weekend food is worse than usual. The Nest is good to eat at for lunch, but the amount of food that constitutes a meal swipe there is not filling enough to be eaten for dinner. There are a lot of cheap places to eat within walking distance of the school. On campus jobs are great and extremely convenient, although not easy to come by once you are already a student due to the high amount of applicants. If you are offered a job with your admission, I advise that you take it if you think at some later point you would like to have a campus job.
    Bang for the buck

    The quality of the education we receive is amazing for the comparatively low costs of tuition. The dorm rooms are pretty big, I've had friends at other schools who are surprised by their size and how nice the rooms are when they come to visit. While the school food is not great overall, it is edible. If you get to the dining hall at the very beginning of the mealtime, you will get the best food before it runs out.
    Am enjoying being here

    I love the people here, everyone is very open and friendly. As a freshman it was very easy to get to know people, everyone in my dorm felt like family. When walking to class you are guaranteed to see a few people that you can say hi to, although there are enough students here that every day you will see tons of new people. For a small school there are a surprising amount of things to do. There are a lot of clubs and activities to participate in, when I'm at school I never feel bored. We have several concerts and carnivals a year, which are a great way to relieve the stress of finals and to have fun!
    Am learning a lot

    There are a wide variety of classes here, meaning that there is always something appealing to take. The classes get more specific and therefore, more interesting, the higher their level. The class sizes are small enough that you can get to know a lot, or in some cases all, of your classmates, and the teacher will remember your name. The teachers here are all very enthusiastic about their topics, which makes going to class a lot easier!

    The most beautiful campus in Virginia! Easy to get around and an easy hike to DC to get nightlife, go to concerts etc.
    Will learn a lot

    The small campus offers small classes, free tutoring anytime for math and free tutoring for other courses if a request is received. The professors NOT teacher's aids teach the classes. Only undergraduates attend the main campus making it ideal. Internships in DC can be had during the school year with a train ride to DC from Fredericksburg. Students either go T TH or MWF and take classes the other days.

    I think UMW is good for all types of students but you will benefit more if you are a hard-working, motivated, charismatic individual.
    Tips for prospective students

    My advise to any prospective UMW students would be to read when the professors assign readings, they're not doing it because they want to...it WILL be on a pop quiz, test, or final. Believe me. And also to enjoy college. It's stressful but you will look back on it and remember the best times you had at UMW :)
    Bang for the buck

    Colleges are expensive, there is no way to get around it. But it's nice to know that you're paying a lot to get a good education and that's what counts the most. You could pay a lot of money anywhere but you have to know what's going to benefit you in the long run. Combine the awesome, educated professors, new expansions, and beautiful campus and you know that it is worth every cent of your tuition.
    Am enjoying being here

    I was a transfer student, so my biggest fear was that I would be the outcast on campus since everyone has known eachother since they started. This is no where near true! All of the students at UMW are so welcoming! I feel like I have been here since my freshman year. There is also a lot to do. Between the sports and the 100+ clubs and organizations, there is bound to be something for everyone. Also, UMW is making a lot of upgrades. We are currently in the process of building a new gym and we just opened the new Eagle Landing which is gorgeous and has nice places to eat at the base of the building. UMW is a great place to attend school, I love being a UMW Eagle!!
    Am learning a lot

    The classes at UMW are awesome! They are on the smaller side, but this is good because it gives the professors a chance to answer any questions you might have. Speaking of professors, they are awesome! You can really see the love they have for teaching when they lecture. The professors at UMW make you love your class, even if it is impossible. For example, I am currently taking statistics, math and I haven't always gotten along, but my statistics teacher is wonderful at making learning statistics seem easy. I enjoy going to statistics class because of my professor.

    It is wonderful here, everyone is so kind and nice. No one is excluded and everyone has fun here whether through sports, school council, clubs, theatre, and more. As long you work hard in school and keep up with your work given everything will be fine.
    Tips for prospective students

    For incoming students, come prepared, get involved and interact. The academics makes you work so its not so easy but there are people and students around willing to help out. Get to know the campus to get around before move in day, and especially visit the school before you decide to go. Overall, choose the school that makes you feel like this is the college experience you want.

    At Mary Wash, it's a public college with a private school atmosphere. The school is reasonably priced, especially the items that they sell. Textbooks are cheap and now the bookstore is doing a rent the textbook program. As well tuition is not that high compared to other colleges and with almost the same educational experience.
    Am enjoying being here

    Mary Washington is such a beautiful campus and students here are so nice and outgoing. There are so many activities that go on throughout the year and every day, whether at the Great Hall, the Underground, or at Ball circle. Students love to interact and get involved with each other, I know I do. I have made so many friends and I have joined plenty of clubs and done many activities such as Rugby, College Republicans, PRISM, Hall council historian and President of Arrington, and intramural sports. As well, near the school is Central Park with many restaurants and places to shop and then there's downtown Fredericksburg which is very colonial and nice during the winter.
    Am learning a lot

    I am definitely learning a lot here. I plan to be a Biology/Pre-med major and the professors and everyone around is so helpful. Some classes have a lot of work but you know you're learning something because the professors apply the information to real life situations. All of the subjects we learn are so interesting and fun. Sometimes we get lots of information and it's like overload but really the professors are so passionate and enthused about thier field of study that you don't mind all the information. Plus, at Mary Washington, the classes are smaller in size about 20 students and it makes it easier to learn because you can have a one on one with the professor and get help if needed as well as have a personal relationship with the students and professors.

    There are blue lights located all over campus. Also, I walk across campus from my friends' dorm and I never feel any danger. If you would like an escort, however, the police are more than willing to walk back with you and are very friendly towards you.
    Greek Life

    There is a Greek Chapter off campus, but not recognized by the school. There are about two fraternities that people can join and they do not cause any trouble. They are very respectful of everyone here at UMW.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are so many to choose from! From Quidditch to Student Senate, there is a club for everybody, and they always make you feel welcome.
    Great for these types of students

    This school is great for Historic Preservation or History majors. Being in the middle of Fredericksburg, there is so much history. You cannot walk without touching some historical moment in time, whether it be from the Revolutionary War or the Civil War.

    We have the spirit rock is serves as a sort of billboard where the campus clubs advertise for upcoming events. I have also seen many birthday shout outs on the rock and just to say welcome back to UMW during the fall semester.

    Tuition is a little pricey, but I definitely think you get what you pay for here. You pay a little more, but the professors here are very knowledgeable in their fields and extracurriculars are very fun here.
    What to do for fun

    There are tons of clubs to join here at UMW. Also, we are smack dab in the middle of Fredericksburg, so there are plenty of things to do off campus. There's Historic Downtown with quaint little shops, to Central Park with the latest and most modern shops and malls. There's never a dull moment!
    Food and Dining

    There are currently three places on campus that take the meal plan, but they are building a new facility. There are numerous options, so everyone is satisfied here.
    Dorm Life

    I am a Resident Assistant and we try as hard as we can to create a welcoming environment. My freshman year I felt like I was welcomed into a new home and new family.
    Academic Rigor

    It gets challenging here, but they also have excellent tutoring opportunities here and speaking and writing centers to help you improve in difficult subjects.
    Tips for prospective students

    One tip I have is to join clubs! That is a sure way to make friends here. Also, don't be afraid to talk to people sitting alone, that's how I made my closest friends here.

    The campus police are very helpful and friendly. The campus is a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. The campus melds into the town of Fredericksburg and with the FREDD transportation it is easy and safe to get around.

    What to do for fun

    When there aren't any on campus events going on, you can head downtown for some shopping or relaxing in any of the antique shops, cafes, or lounges. If more intense shopping is your flavor, you can take the FRED bus (free of charge) and head to Central Park or the Spotsylvania mall.
    Food and Dining

    We have three major eating venues on campus, and all three contain a variety of food so you don't have to be bored with the same food all year long.
    Dorm Life

    Dorm life is fun and convenient. I've been living on campus for the past 3 1/2 months and I love it. I'm very close to on campus social events, and off campus we have a lovely downtown area within walking distance.
    Academic Rigor

    Classes can be very challenging. The workload is not light, but there are plenty of resources at your disposal should you need it. Such as the writing center, multiple tutors, and even the professors themselves.
    Tips for prospective students

    Make sure you grab every opportunity UMW gives you to visit and don't be afraid to check out everything! Orientation week is packed full of opportunities for you to meet people, get involved in the community, and build long-lasting friendships.

    There is no official school approved fraternity but there is a co-ed fraternity off-campus that is mainly women.
    What to do for fun

    There is always something happening, on or off campus.
    Food and Dining

    The food here is pretty good. One dining hall on campus is called Seacobeck and I do not eat there because the food isn't that great, but I lot of people go there because it's one meal and all you can eat.
    Dorm Life

    Living in a dorm is not that great. Being a freshmen, I live with lots of immature people. Not all of the dorms have air conditioning or even full kitchens, but they are nice as long as everyone keeps them that way.
    Academic Rigor

    Classes can be kind of hard, but just because there is sometimes a lot of work at one time. Keeping up can be a little hard but it is nice to have a challenge!
    Tips for prospective students

    Come to school prepared and eager to learn. Laptops are very helpful if you need to go somewhere quiet to work.

    This campus is in the middle of old Fredericksburg. All the doors are locked to all except students with EagleOne cards, there are blue safety phones throughout campus, and if you want a ride, the campus police are always willing to supply you with one after dark.
    Greek Life

    The school is not affiliated with any fraternities or sororities, but there are some nationally recognized chapters here on campus.
    Clubs and Activities

    There's basically a club for anyone and anything on campus!

    Mary Washington is great for students who are genuinely interested in getting a great education, who are motivated, honorable, and spirited.

    One quirky little tradition (among several) happens during spring carnival. Everyone who graduates on an even year is called a Goat and all who graduate on an odd year is called a Devil. At the end of the carnival, Devils and Goats play a series of games and challenges to see which team comes out on top! Go Goats!

    Mary Washington is one of the cheapest schools in Virginia, yet one of the best quality!
    What to do for fun

    Campus life is always bustling with opportunities to have fun. There's always people playing pick-up Frisbee, soccer, and football games in the lawn. Also there's the cinema cheap seats where you can see newly released movie for a dollar! Often, there are concerts, plays, or sporting events to watch as well.
    Food and Dining

    No matter what you're hungry for, it's here on campus. Dining facilities are very accommodating to allergy and nutrition needs so there's always something healthy and delicious. Of course, if you're looking for a great slice of pizza or hot wings, that's always available too!
    Dorm Life

    Living in a Residence Hall can be an amazing experience. There are halls to suite every need and every style of life.
    Academic Rigor

    The classes are tough, but the professors are so open to helping and so engaging that it makes learning the material easier. Everyone is known by name in class, so you're held accountable for knowing your stuff. In the Honors Program, the rigor kicks up a notch, but everything is manageable.
    Tips for prospective students

    For incoming freshman, do not wait until registration opens up to sign up for your classes. Go online beforehand, make a few possible schedules, and wake up early to register.

    Mary Washington was my number one choice for college, and I have not regretted my decision to attend. The atmosphere on campus is so positive and inclusive. No matter where you go, there are familiar faces to encourage you and wish you a great day.

    Its a good price for in-state tuition but their financial aid is awful.

    I'm used to coming from a suburb area with no downtown but im a city girl at heart so i think that being able to live on a campus that is close to DC and a historic downtown will be amazing

    I think that UMW's liberal arts program is one of the best in the state. It is an underestimated program at times when compared to those schools like UVA and VT but their programs are just as strong

    As an out of state student, the tuition is reasonable, but there aren't many scholarships offered through the school. :/

    The first time I visited UMW at least ten people came up to me to ask hey, are you on a tour? Do you have any questions? You're going to love it here!. Everyone is so ridiculously friendly.
    Will learn a lot

    I sat in on a class taught by Professor Romero in the classics department and was so impressed. The way he taught made it interesting and fun to learn Latin- something that's not so easy to do. :)

    Tuition seems to always be rising but I think Mary Washington is a good value, especially being a public school. The professors are of great quality and there are great resources available to students. The school food is pretty good, there is a pretty good variety and vegetarian options. Make sure you get textbooks online or rent them whenever possible and you will save a ton of money on books.

    I definitely enjoy being at Mary Washington. The students are open and friendly and making friends is pretty easy if you put yourself out there. The Club Fairs are held twice each semester and are a great way to find other students with your interests. There is a good variety of clubs so chances are you will find something for you. Campus ministries are an option and can provide a home away from home for religious students, and are welcoming to those who are not. I have a lot of friends who love the Civil War reenactment club, and there are club sports for students who want to stay active but don't have the time commit to a varsity sport. Besides clubs, there is still a lot that the school has to offer students, such as dollar movie night, or bands that come to play at the Underground, one of the campus dining centers. If you like to play pool or air hockey, check out the Wash Room in the Woodard Campus Center. Mary Washington is not a huge party school but there are parties for students who are interested. Campus is absolutely beautiful any time of the year. I do have a complaint in regards to the administrative staff: they are nice and willing to help but can be unorganized and ineffective, especially when it comes to transfer credits, so make sure you stay on top of your own administrative needs. Fredericksburg is a great area; there are plenty of places to go out and eat or explore, especially if you’re interested in the history the area has to offer.
    Am learning a lot

    It really is up to you how much you get out of your education, but Mary Washington is a good place to focus on your studies without too many distractions, especially because it isn't a huge party school. The professors I have are generally very intelligent, give interesting lectures, and are thrilled to see students during office hours. Free tutoring is available, especially for math, and the Writing and Speaking Centers are excellent resources for students working on presentations or papers. I would not recommend night classes for students unless they get a really good professor (check it out on ratemyprofessor.com) or that is absolutely the only time available, because they tend to drag on quite a bit and it really saps your interest in the subject.

    Mary Washington has the highest number of students enter the peace corps per student population than any other school in the nation. So if you are a student that wants a well rounded education and that has dreams to make a difference in the world, consider The University of Mary Washington.

    Just because Mary Washington is small and not as known as other colleges does not mean it is not a great hidden gem in a slew of great Virginia colleges. Don't write it off, if you go here you'll find out what I mean...

    For in-state tuition, Mary Washington is affordable and you get a good education out of it. For out of state students it is a bit pricey, and can easily match up with other schools. However, the Historic Preservation Program is different than any other school, and well worth the trip and price.
    Am enjoying being here

    Mary Washington's location for some is said to be boring, however if you are serious about your studies, academics here are very exceptional. Not to mention surrounding areas offer great opportunities for internships being so close to the Washington D.C. area. Being in Historic Preservation, Mary Washington offers a unique program that no other schools have, with enriched history in Fredericksburg to intern at and volunteer, as well as great Study Abroad programs that are affordable and students will not regret.
    Am learning a lot

    The education I am receiving is going to make me a well rounded person with a bright future ahead of me. I feel like I am at a small but academically minded campus that is going to prepare me for a career ahead of me, or graduate school. Interwoven with rich local history, the Fredericksburg area is a great place to go to school, not quite a small town, but not a huge place either.     This is something Mary Washington is improving on. There are security escorts after dark that will either walk you to your destination or pick you up in a police cruiser. Even though Mary Wash is a relatively safe campus I would still encourage everyone to use the buddy system after dark or to call a safety escort.

    Everyone meets at the fountain. When you want to meet someone for lunch or something, the fountain is the best place to do so. It is located very centrally on campus so it is close to everything! We don't have a football team but we have a great Rugby team that a lot of people go out to cheer for. Don't walk over the seal in Trinkle Hall. It is said that if you do you won't graduate on time. So when you are in Trinkle you will find students avoid that as much as possible.

    Mary Washington has been rated one of the top schools that gives you an Ivy league education for a reasonable price. It is one of the best priced public universities in Virginia. We have great professors here that are experts in their field and really know what they are talking about.
    What to do for fun

    Explore downtown Fredericksburg! Historic Downtown Fredericksburg is great. There are a lot of different shops there. There are several very nice used bookstores as well as a great coffee shop, Hyperion. All of this is within walking distance of campus so you don't need a car. Also, like I said before get involved. Often the clubs you join will periodically have events and things for you to go to. There is always Central Park, where everyone goes to shop and to find real restaurants. There are two movie theaters near campus that the bus can take you to for FREE as long as you have a UMW ID.
    Food and Dining

    Wherever you go you are going to find that campus food is not great. Think of your high school cafeteria with slightly more selection. Mary Wash has three main dining facilities. There is Seacobeck Hall, or Seaco as us students affectionately call it. Seaco is your traditional dining hall. It is all you can eat buffet style and has a variety of different foods. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We also have the Underground where you can find sandwiches, soups, and salads that have fresh ingredients. Then there is the Eagles Nest. The Nest has a Vocelli's Pizza, a WoW wings, and a sandwich section. This is where you are gunna find your traditional fast food on campus.
    Dorm Life

    You are always going to have some drama somewhere when you are living with someone for the first time. If this does happen don't fret it! We have excellent RA staff who are always willing to help if there is a problem. Once you find your group of friends everything becomes much easier. Mary Wash just re-did some of the dorms and is in the process of updating more of them. Not all dorms have AC but all of them have heat. I would not suggest going to one of the dorms that have AC because that can cause a lot of drama. We have two different types of housing, dorms and apartments. The apartments are nicer than the dorms and are reserved for juniors and seniors. The dorms are either in a suite style- two rooms connected by a common bathroom, or hall style- a cluster of rooms that shares a big bathroom. I had a hall style bathroom my Freshman year and found that I met a lot more people that way. You can't help but run into your hall mates on your way to or from the bathroom.
    Academic Rigor

    Mary Washington can be hard, we have been placed near the top in academics. While Mary Wash can have difficult classes it isn't anything that isn't completely fair and doable. The professors make every effort to help you are one of your best resources.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get involved! I can't stress this enough, for any college or University you attend. I have found that since I became involved in a club that I have met more people, had more fun, and had so many more wonderful experiences. While academics are very important, it is also important that you feel comfortable and accepted where ever you go. Mary Washington has so many different clubs and organizations that it is not hard to find something that interests you. Also, if you don't find something it is not hard to create your own club.

    downtown fredericksburg is nice to walk to when you just want to get away from campus. mary wash has carnivals, movies on the lawn, movies for $1 in the winter in one of the buildings, sporting events, pageants, lip syncing contests, bingo, karaoke and more! its never a dull moment.

    our food is actually pretty great; its nothing like a home cooked meal, but its pretty satisfying. if campus food gets boring you can always call in for chinese or pizza; there are plenty of places that deliver free for mary wash students. if all else fails, downtown fredericksburg is a 10 min walk from campus which holds tons of restaurants and little places to grab a bite.

    the dorms are in great locations. the longest time it would take you to get from your dorm to class would be 10 min. bushnell is the best freshman dorm!!

    some classes and professors are tougher than others. professors dont allow laziness, but they are very approachable and really do want us to understand the material. if you ask for help, you will definitely get it in a reasonable amount of time.

    dont pick a college based on reputation or size; go and visit it first! dont be turned off by the small size of mary wash; because it isnt huge, you see so many people you know during the day. walk through mary wash's campus for a day; its absolutely gorgeous any season!!

    our campus is really safe. from theft etc. we are very safe because of our honor code, however you do have to be careful with things on campus walk like bikes because people from off campus do come over and ruin our lovely system. the police are around but not overbearing.

    there is not a lot of greek life on campus. we have one campus recognized fraternity but that's it. we have many off campus options for frats and sororities, which are extremely popular, but getting them to be recognized by the school is some work.

    for our sized campus we have quite a few dining options, which can be nice. the food is usually pretty good, with the exception of seacobeck at certain times. there are increasing numbers of vegan and vegetarian options all around campus. for most of the semester there is eagle express which is a great way to use your flex and buy a muffin and coffee for breakfast without having to take the time to sit down and eat in a dining hall.
    Dorm Life

    dorm life is good. i was put in a triple, but it really isn't that bad. some of the dorms aren't air conditioned, but they are renovating buildings to change that. if you are put in a non-air conditioned dorm like i was, just buy a couple good fans and you'll be fine for the couple weeks of va summer heat. dorms are social and fun places to be, but it is also nice if you can find some alone time/a quiet space to be by yourself. lots of people here just take walks around town/campus.
    Academic Rigor

    depending on the classes you take, academics can be difficult or easy. getting your general education classes out of the way is easy but get it done early. as long as you go to class, participate, and do the homework then you should do just fine. some professors are very difficult though, so make sure you ask around for advice.

    get enough sleep. many students here fail to do so and you can see it affecting their academic performances and also making them too worn out to have fun on weekends. also, always go to sunday brunch. it is delicious and something that most students try to go to at least once a month.

    I didn't really like my dorm because it was in the corner of the campus so it was far from almost everything like the library, dinning halls and academic buildings. It is also on the bottom of the hill so I had to walk the stairs everyday. There were people in my hall that were very rude and loud but the Residence Assistant did not do anything about it.

    There are classes that are very easy but there are also classes that are really tough. It depends mostly on the professors and your interest in the course. But in general if you work hard and do all the homework, projects and study for the test you will do just fine.

    Mary Washington doesn't have a football team so don't expected it to be highly spirited like many larger universities. Also, you will tend to not finish your meals so make sure that you use them before the last week of the semester so you are not wasting money. I would also recommend picking your dorms wisely because some of the dorms are in a very inconvenient location.

    The actual campus is really safe with lighting everywhere, police patrolling 24/7, and escorts available whenever you want them if you feel unsafe walking somewhere. However, Fredericksburg gets a bad rep as one of the rape capitals of the world, and the areas around campus aren't all the best parts of town.
    Greek Life

    Almost non-existent...we have three fraternities although one is technically co-ed but usually is referred to as a sorority due to the mainly female membership.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are TONS of clubs, it's actually one of the reasons I decided to go here...but the membership (whether for better or worse) in these clubs is consistently low. You can find a list of all 160+ of them somewhere on the school website, and there are also quite a few IM sports leagues.
    Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

    Devil Goat Day started...I think in the 1930's when the junior class decided they wanted a goat for their mascot. The seniors then decided they would make a devil their mascot and stole and hid the juniors' (live) goat somewhere in Fredericksburg. Ever since then there has been a competition between the even year Goats and odd year Devils.
    What to do for fun

    Giant Productions always brings at least two big concerts per semester (including the free Homecoming one); there's Cheap Seats that hosts $1 movies every weekend, almost always something else going on on the weekend, plenty of bars within walking distance of campus, and movie theaters on the bus route. There's plenty to do on campus but most people just don't seem to want to do it for whatever reason.
    Food and Dining

    The food is good as far as school food goes, but it can get boring. I know our current contract with our food provider has run out, so that may change, but I wouldn't count on it. Otherwise they seem to be fond of changing up the dining halls every year, so at least that's something different--if not always for the better.
    Dorm Life

    The only downside is that half of our dorms still don't have AC, but otherwise I think they're pretty good compared to most colleges. The buildings are never over five stories, and generally the rooms aren't very cramped--some buildings even have rooms that can feel too big.
    Academic Rigor

    Sure we're nowhere near Ivy League material, but UMW definitely isn't easy either. Even if you're a genius, there's lots of tedious work that your grades depend on that will keep you plenty busy--and that's just for the language requirement.
    Tips for prospective students

    Again, this isn't really a party school. Fredericksburg is one of those places that's a strange mix between retired Civil War enthusiasts and enthusiastic college kids that don't always mix well. On the other hand, if the idea of a huge school intimidates you, then this is the right place. We have a good variety of majors, 90% of the professors are great, and we've been undergoing renovations for the past few years that are making life here even more enjoyable.

    UMW is a close knit, if small, community. Everyone here cares about and probably recognizes everyone else, and the campus is beautiful too. If you're looking for a party school, go somewhere else but if that's not important to you then UMW is a great choice for anyone.

The clubs here are small because it is a small school, so everyone has to really get involved and try hard at making events happen.     Devil/Goat day is a long-lived tradition at Mary Washington. Every year we have a huge festival with many games, lots of food, and free give-aways. The even graduation years (2012) are the Goats, and the odd graduation years (2013) are the devils. The tradition began in 1926.

    Mary Washington is the cheapest public Virginia school and has consistently been on lists for best value. The academics are great for what we are paying. The only reason why this got four stars is because they don't necessarily know how to spend our money. They raised the costs of meal plans, but the food didn't get any better. They also spent $16,000 on putting Eagle (the mascot) stickers on the streets, which peeled off after a year. These are just some examples of how they don't spend money on the smartest things, but that being said I think academics are the most important part and we do have great academics for the low cost of tuition.
    What to do for fun

    Fredericksburg is a small, but great civil war town. Five minutes away from the school is downtown Fredericksburg where you will find bars, restaurants, and many antique stores. Students love to spend time down there walking around shopping in the afternoon or going out to the bars at night. There are many activities on campus like Bingo, open mic night, and trivia that you can participate in almost every night. Washington, DC is also only an hour away, so you can go to many events such as concerts if you have a car or you can take the train!
    Food and Dining

    The food and dining is nothing special. It's definitely better than a typical high school cafeteria, but still not great. There are three dining halls: Seacobeck, a buffet style dining hall where you can get hamburgers, pizza, pasta, stir-fry, salad, and lots more. The Eagle's Nest, which has mainly personalized sandwiches and pizza. Then the Underground, which also has sandwiches and all the ingredients come from an organic farm.
    Dorm Life

    The dorm life is not the best, but with recent renovations, they should keep getting better. A lot of the freshman dorms don't have AC, so it's very hot at the beginning of the school year and towards the end. The older dorms don't have the greatest facilities, but most of the dorms are pretty big in size compared to other schools. After freshman year, you can live in some of the apartment-style dorms, which are brand new and very nice. You can have a single or share a room and a bathroom with one other person. And then share a common area with two other people where you have a living room and a nice kitchen.
    Academic Rigor

    Contrary to popular belief, Mary Washington's academics are actually pretty demanding. The sciences especially are tough and challenging, but it is still manageable. I think the reason why it can be managed is because of the great professors we have. They really try their hardest to make time for each and every one of their students to succeed.

    I would really think about what you want out of college before coming here. If you want a huge social life and party all the time, this isn't necessarily the school for you. It definitely can offer you with some parties and the bar life is great, but it is no Virginia Tech or JMU. If you want a school where you can get to know your professors and really challenge yourself, this is a great school for you. Since the school is pretty small, you are really able to personalize your academic experience.

    I never felt like I was in danger walking around campus at any time of the day. There are blue light emergency buttons set up all around campus and officers are usually out patrolling at night. If you need help, you can get it quickly.
    Greek Life

    If you're really wanting to be a part of Greek Life, this probably isn't the best option for you. There's one sorority affiliated with the school and two fraternities that are off campus and not affiliated with the school. Greek Life isn't big here at all.
    Clubs and Activities

    There is a club for anything here. And if you want to start something new, I'm pretty sure you just need ten like minded people and you can go for it. I'm a member of the Outdoors club, radio station, and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). Sign up for anything that sounds interesting to you and try it out. You're going to find something you like.
    Great for these types of students

    If you are looking for a smaller school where you can know a lot of people, but still see some new faces everyday this would be a good option for you. I know there are many athletes here, and the school is known for being very accepting to the LGBT community (there is gender neutral housing). I can't really narrow down what type of student should go here because there are so many different kinds of people here. If you want a big school or a party school this probably isn't the one for you. Just try it out, this school has great academics and I've met some awesome people.

    The main tradition you will hear about is painting the rock. There's this huge rock along campus walk by the nest that people use as a message board of sorts. It's used to promote activities, wish people happy birthday, remind students of an upcoming event, or even used as a blank canvas. Another tradition of sorts is chalking campus walk. A group of people will just write all over campus walk with chalk. Sometimes it's to promote an event, other times it's just for fun.
    Bang for the buck

    As an out of state student this school was a little pricy for me. I've had to take out loans and apply for financial aid, but I would have had to do that at almost any school I went to.
    What to do for fun

    UMW usually has something going on every night, whether that's a performance or a game of bingo. Check student activities or bulliten boards around the school for a heads up of what's coming up. If you aren't looking for a school run activity you could always throw a frisbee around with friends or lay out in the sun on Ball Circle. About a ten minute walk away from campus is historic downtown Fredericksburg. There are little shops and restaurants, as well as the coffee shop my friends and I frequent - Hyperion. If you know someone with a car, you could drive over to Central Park for a movie, shopping, or pretty much anything else you could want to do. UMW is also pretty close to DC and Richmond so you could carpool there for a day trip. If you don't want to spend any money, the Rappahannock River is pretty close to the school. You could walk or drive there and go hiking, swimming, kayaking, etc. Needless to say, there is always something to do.
    Food and Dining

    I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food here. There is a lot to choose from and there are plenty of healthy options. I would recommend the Underground - I ate there the most and it has many organic choices. Seacobeck (the main dining hall) has three different themed rooms for food choices. It also has a killer brunch on the weekends. The nest is the place to go for a quick meal or to pick something up to go.
    Dorm Life

    I didn't have the best time in my dorm this past year, but some of my friends had an awesome year in theirs. It really depends on how social you are combined with the dorm you get assigned. Try meeting your neighbors or make a friend in another dorm and hang out there.
    Academic Rigor

    I know a lot of people had troubles with academics their freshman year landing them in academic probation, but fortunately I wasn't one of them. Classes can be demanding, especially the in the higher levels. Keeping up with the assignments and actually attending class makes the work very doable.
    Tips for prospective students

    Don't be afraid to introduce yourself. Most everyone here is really accepting and wants to get to know you too. I was really shy my first semester and only talked to some people in my dorm, after opening up and meeting other people I found that I was happier and surrounded by genuine friends. On another note, don't only focus on socializing. Keeping up with classwork isn't hard if you make it one of your priorities. Have fun, but make sure your grades don't suffer for it.

    The University of Mary Washington is a small public school with a tight knit community. You really have a sense of family while being here, not just with the students, but with the staff as well. UMW is not only a place of higher learning, but a place to discover who you really are.

    There are emergency buttons everywhere on campus that you can press whenever you don't feel safe. But my friends and I never had to. Also, there are many security officers around the campus and they will even escort you to your dorms if you ask them to.

    Oh my god. AMAZING food. At UMW it becomes the Freshman forty if you're not careful about how much you go to the buffet rooms.

    Dorm rooms are small, but they get the job done. There are always always events going on during the weekend for your dorm, your class, even the whole campus. Sometimes it's hard to live on a really small week to week budget for college, but everyone there is broke and goes to the free events too.

    UMW will make you work. Classes are short, but they make you do your homework. I will spend most of my time reading plays and history novels this semester, along with memorizing paintings and so much more.

    Don't let the ratio of men to women intimidate you. I was honestly disturbed at first to have so many other girls on campus with me. College is not for boyfriends, but if you are looking for someone you can find it. Make sure you follow your dreams with school. Never settle because of money, family, or friends.

    What to do for fun

    Any events on campus is always fun. There are several of them each week. Central park is close to campus. It contains a mall, a movie theater and bowling alley to wind down in.
    Food and Dining

    There are several different place to eat. There are 3 on campus, seaco dining hall, the nest, and a coffee/deli place next to the nest. All of them have great food and are roomy enough to sit with all your favorite people or take time away to study. The campus is also really close to central park which is filled with student's favorite places to eat, like, chipotle, sweet frog, chik-fil-a, and chinese food.
    Dorm Life

    Dorms and the apartments have always been fun. There are theme parties and events that each one holds so that everyone else around campus can meet everyone who lives there. Usually RA's are nice and chill, you will get the occasional stubborn one, but as long as you follow rules and don't do anything against the law then everything is fine.
    Academic Rigor

    It is a hard school and some of the faculty can be a little overwhelming. But it will always be worth it in the end. Professors don't like or want to see a student fail. As long as you are working hard and showing them that you are fighting, there will always be help.

    Keep an open mind, or keep your distance, whatever you prefer. Mary Washington will open you up to every possibility and see to it that you have a rewarding experience. Have fun but balance, there is always something fun and new going on but don't forget your academics.

    Mary Washington is home to the most spirited bunch I have ever seen. It has a beautiful and exciting campus. The faculty here is much like the student, in personality, where they hone in on the emotional and social impacts of the student body and are very supportive.

    There are three options on campus plus an occasional on the go cart. There is a grocery store across the street which they have added a bridge over the traffic. Also, on this side there are a few small restaurants that have specials for student and other good deals.
    Dorm Life

    When it come to dorms they have many choices, all girls, coed, sweet style, quad, and hall. Each one has it benefits, I personally have hall style and like it because we have common areas for when we want to hang out and our dorm room for when we want to be a lone.
    Academic Rigor

    They offer many different classes at many different times. Some of the classes are tough, but the professors are extremely helpful. If they cannot help at the moment they will send you to another professor or student that can help.
    Tips for prospective students

    Visit many different college campuses and visit the ones you like more than once. Also talk to as many students as you can. The ones showing the school are going to be happy and positive, but the other students will tell you about some of their challenges and how they overcame them.

    This is a great school if you are looking for the small town feel. It is full of eager students, helpful professors, and many neighbors going on a morning jog or walking their dog. The best part is the chalk art all over campus; confessions, updates, and things that just make you laugh.

    We have a huge variety of clubs available and funding available to them. There are some pretty cool events that happen on campus that are put on by various clubs.

    Clubs are a must! Campus activities are fun too. We have cheap seats ($1 movies) on the weekends. Fredericksburg is a cute little town. We are near enough to DC and Richmond that many people go there on the weekends. You find your niche and what you like.

    Food is not horrible, but not good. There is very little variety.

    While some dorms are old, there are some shiny new ones as well. The communities fostered in dorms are nurturing especially in freshman dorms.

    While freshman year may not be as challenging as you expected, once you become an upper class men, Mary Washington offers a demanding academic curriculum.
