    Great for these types of students

    Everyone. UMBC is one of the most diverse campuses in the country. There is something for everyone here. From Division I athletic events to anime marathons to campus-wide zombie vs. human games.

    Great for students who are goal-setters. Many people can be overwhelmed by the many clubs and activities at UMBC. It is easy to become distracted.
    Tips for prospective students

    Be sure to meet with your adviser, they seek to help. Also, try not to be involved with too many activities, the grades come first. Without good grades, you will not be at UMBC for long. Remember, it is an honors university; good grades are expected. Not to worry though, there is still plenty of room for mess-ups.

    The tuition price is good for instate students, however it is mandatory to have a meal plan if in the dorms. The meal plan price is slightly expensive compared to purchasing and making your own food. Nevertheless, it is easy to earn money by applying for the many internships and jobs due to a website dedicated to their search.
    Am enjoying being here

    There is always an activity at UMBC. The gym is open to anyone to exercise and there are many clubs to join. The teachers are encouraging as well.
    Am learning a lot

    I did not expect to learn much due to entering this college with AP credits, but I have still learned many new things due to the immense variety of classes. In my internship, 90% or more of my daily activities were taught.

    This school is great for hard-working, determined, goal-oriented, focused, self-reliant, fun-having students.
    Tips for prospective students

    Never be afraid to ask for help. Professors are there to help you. Make new friends. Try new things. You may be surprised of the things that may spark your interest. Turn in your work on time and get a tutor for hard subjects. Plan ahead. Get to know your roommate. Relax.
    Bang for the buck

    UMBC's cost of attendance is actually quite low compared to other Maryland colleges. Also, as a scholarship recipient myself, I can also say that UMBC offers many different scholarships and loans to incoming freshman to ensure that students are taken care of. Also, I must say that UMBC's prices are definitely worth it for the wonderful educational, professional, and extracurricular opportunities it offers!

    I LOVE UMBC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love school and I love the students there also! They make you feel welcomed right away and there are always events to bring a sense of community to students and to provide opportunities for fun and entertainment! Go Retrievers!

    I am learning SO much at UMBC. They really make sure that you are getting a top rate education! I really learned a lot this past semester and I feel like I am learning on a high level. The information they provide is very helpful and applies to our everyday lives. You will always be learning a lot here!

    If you're an engineer, you'll love it here. If you're a writer, you'll love it here. Artists and scientists alike will find what they need at this school. If you're a language student or are focusing on politics, then you would be better suited for another college.
    Tips for prospective students

    Apply early and don't stress about your SATs. What matters most is how you used your years in high school; get active, be a leader, and join as many extra curricular and volunteer programs as you can. Those are what really count.
    Bang for the buck

    This University is by no means expensive, yet you get more out of it than just about any other Maryland school, including those that cost three times as much.
    Am enjoying being here

    Every day I find new reasons to love this campus. The atmosphere is friendly and there is always some extra curricular activity to participate in. Going from Physics 122 to a match of HvZ then finish with a run around the track and fencing practice makes for a wonderful evening.
    Am learning a lot

    The one-on-one relations between student and professors is unprecedented in such a high-ranking institution. The classes are well structured and you will learn what you come here to learn.

    UMBC is great for all types of students. For students who fall behind academically, there are a variety of tutorial centers and sessions. For students who are always ahead academically, there are opportunities to work as a tutor. Regardless of academic standing, the general body of students at UMBC are dedicated to academic success. If you know you want to succeed, come to UMBC.
    Tips for prospective students

    Be ready to work, but also be ready to enjoy yourself. The school has a number of activities and clubs to partake in but do understand that the primary focus is education. Some freshman do not tend to notice the strain on academic success as much as upperclassmen do. In addition to enjoying themselves, the general body of students focus on education. This principle, if adopted prior to entry into the university, will greatly contribute to academic success. Also, be sure to develop study groups.

    As a student seeking to obtain scholarships, I understand monetary value and I would definitely say UMBC is worth the buck. Although not as expensive as Ivy League school's the university provides network opportunities and facilities of comparable class. The dedication to success fuels both students and faculty and highly contributes to the increasing number of meritorious accomplishments by the school.

    I love being at UMBC. The opportunities available for success are countless. There are tutorial sessions for every course, especial the entry level courses taken by freshmen. In addition, there are discussion sections after lecture. These sessions help to clarify information learned during lecture. There are a variety of events that occur on campus as well. The dormitories also host events to get students active and connected. It's all a very enriching experience.
    Am learning a lot

    The University of Maryland Baltimore County presents me with many opportunities I previously did not know existed. Most notable is the Shriver Center--the institute in charge of securing internships for students. The university is equipped with fully dedicated staff and degree focused students who know that it's cool to be smart. This feeling has also been transferred to me and is a contributor to my success.

    Campus Safety

    Campus safety is pretty decent. Often you can see police cars patrolling campus. Also, they have blue lights around the campus, and if you ever feel nervous, you can get an escort to your car at night.

    They have a lot of clubs and activities if you just check them out.

    Traditions, they do not really have any. No unusual locations that I can think of either.
    Bang for the buck

    One of the nicest things about UMBC is that they do not cost much, being one of the less expensive public universities. However, the academic rigor does not decrease because of this. Many teachers do a great job teaching, and have had a lot of extraordinary experiences that they are often willing to share with their students.
    What to do for fun

    There are movies every weekend on campus for only two dollars, and you get free popcorn. Sometimes they can have some cool events. Mostly there are a lot of clubs, and they often have a few events over each semester that are kind of fun.
    Food and Dining

    The food is not that great, and there are not many options. The best place I can think of is the subway, and that is off from the main campus. In addition, on the weekends, nearly every place you can get food closes down.
    Dorm Life

    I do not live on campus, so I can not be very helpful in this area. However, I know from friends that you can have questionable room mates or great ones, so it depends on the dorm and room mate.
    Academic Rigor

    Academic rigor is decent, and generally depends on each course and professor. Some courses are made incredibly easy because of point distribution or easier exams. Other classes are made difficult because of the harder grading, no curving, or just more difficult material. Another factor that makes the classes more difficult in general is the large class sizes, ranging from labs of 30 to lectures of 300.
    Tips for prospective students

    Turn all required documents in before the deadline, and check that they have received them all. Also, email or talk in person to an academic adviser and your financial adviser to keep on top of financial aid requirements and to choose the best courses for you in your first semester. Lastly, sign up for an early orientation session to be able to enroll in the classes you want.

    UMBC has a great chance for doing research, since nearly all of the faculty preside over their own lab and require undergraduate workers. However, the application process is a pain because they do not seem to keep on top of everything very well. You must be prepared to take your own initiative and stay on top of all documents and requirements.

    There is not much to do on the weekends on campus. Socially, The best thing to do is to get involved in other activities. Don't lock yourself away in your room studying all the time. Get out and have fun. Academically, Make sure you work hard. Be open-minded, not crazy.

    I think that if you want to get the real UMBC experience you should live on campus. I also advise becoming active in student groups and organizations.

    One of my favorite things about this school is that they have this concurrent enrollment between their school and other schools in the Maryland area. The great thing about this program is that you can take classes at other schools such as Towson University and Morgan State University that may not be available at UMBC and it is still covered under your UMBC tuition.
    Am enjoying being here

    I like being at UMBC because there is a lot of diversity in the students. They have loads of things to do on and off campus. They do alot of bus trips to New York City and Philadelphia that are very cheap.
    Am learning a lot

    There are so many different subjects being taught here. Almost anything you may be interested in, they have at UMBC. Almost all the classes I've had at this school, I have enjoyed.

    Tips for prospective students

    Come visit UMBC for yourself to get a real feel for the University. Step out of your major periodically and have some fun with your classes! :) I am completing my undergraduate studies in Pre-Medicine but I enjoy taking classes in the social sciences and arts & humanities. Stay in constant contact with your advisor. They are there to help you and the thousands of questions you may have for them. Have balance. Prioritize your homework/studying, clubs, and leisure time because you can easily slide into chaos if you do not. Know what you are in school for and surround yourself with people that share your same drive for success. Seize every opportunity that comes your way and have fun growing and developing YOU!

    UMBC is ranked as one of the most affordable institutions of higher learning in Maryland. I know that when I tell my other friends who attend Maryland universities like Stevenson and College Park what I pay for tuition they get jealous. The cost is most affected by whether you commute or live on campus and what residence hall you live in along with your meal plan of choice. The apartment housing can be a bit pricey and most students only live in them if they have a nice scholarship to pay the expenses. Overall, you are truly getting a Harvard education for a public, state university price.
    Am enjoying being here

    For the most part the people, both students and faculty, are outstanding and are always willing to go out of their way to help you when asked. There are tons of events going on on the campus during the day and at night ranging from Open Mic Nights - where our talented student body displays their musical skills by rapping, singing, reciting poetry, or playing various instruments - to karaoke and ice cream socials. There are a few campus parties (some school-sponsored and others thrown by students) but they never cause any serious problems. UMBC is nothing like College Park in terms of a party school which can be a good and bad thing at times but as long as you get out and meet cool people you will always find ways to have fun. All in all, UMBC has a small-community feel to it and is nice for students that do not want to live too far away from home or feel like just a number among many students. The faculty will get to know you by name and genuinely care about your well-being. I have personally connected with so many faculty members in my first year that I know I will stay in contact with in the future.
    Am learning a lot

    UMBC definitely provides a cultivating environment for learning through different cultural and social perspectives. Tolerance of those around you is highly stressed and a core value at the University. There are numerous cultural and social organizations available for students to join that are not exclusive, but inclusive. We want to learn about everyone and everything, so the more different you are the more of an opportunity there is for learning about each other. I encourage students, especially first-year students, to step out of your comfort zone and keep your mind open to all of the classes available. A class may at first sound boring but you will always be surprised to find yourself interested in the subject matter because our professors encourage thinking about and solving issues presented in the curricula in a non-traditional way. Class discussions are a major focus in many of the first-year seminars which always brings up an opportunity for hearing a different viewpoint or angle that challenges your previously held opinions. This occurred for me in my Sociology 101 lecture and First Year Seminar class on social justice and equality in education.

    i think so. it gives me the opportunity to learn, to do research in a lab, to meet professionals in my field (scientific research). it is one of the least expensive colleges in my state (aside from a community college- but i already went to one of those). a good choice if you ask me.
    What to do for fun

    what you normally do for fun, what else?
    Food and Dining

    it's like all campus food, anywhere you go. a small amount for a lot of money. they do try to be healthy and environmentally conservative. and they do have a chick-fil-a, though now everyone wants a chipoltle. a good bit of selection, but it's like anywhere you'll go.
    Dorm Life

    i don't live in on campus, but i hear it's not that lively. although there are people who are trying to change that, and if you have friends, you can always do something with them. umbc provides transit near them, although the schedule can be erratic, it is consistent for the semester and there is even a bus that goes to the nearby mall.
    Academic Rigor

    they have good, challenging science classes. the honors program is also good. they provide interesting topics, and help a student to grow.
    Tips for prospective students

    expect large classes, and sometimes you can really tell that some teachers are there for their research and not for teaching.

    they have great research opportunities. however, they have large classes. there is also more of a focus on learning than sports or parties.

    UMBC is a very safe campus. Blue lights are posted all over campus and the police make rounds every night to ensure safety. Escorts can also be requested from the police if needed.
    Greek Life

    There is Greek life at UMBC, however there are not fraternity/sorority houses on campus.
    Clubs and Activities

    UMBC offers a wide range of clubs to be involved in on campus. If the club you want to join doesn't exist it is also possible to create a new club. The activities during the week are great but there are less events held on the weekends.

    Bang for the buck

    UMBC is tied with Yale for quality of undergraduate education. The teachers here are qualified and do an excellent job of preparing you for your future endeavors.
    What to do for fun

    There are plenty of clubs on campus to be involved in to have fun. There are also club sports and intramural sports offered. Some major events are Big Crazy Fun night for freshman and Quadmania which is held every spring.
    Food and Dining

    The food at UMBC is decent. There is a dining hall which is an all you can eat style and a meal can be used here. UMBC also has the commons which offers a variety of food at small restaurants. They offer Italian, Chinese, Mexican, as well as subs and hamburgers. Meals are also accepted here. There is also a chick-fil-A and a Starbucks on campus. The only problem with the food is the availability on the weekends. The dining hall has limited hours and only one place is open in the commons each year.
    Dorm Life

    I live in Susquehanna and I think this is the best freshman dorm because it has a great sense of community. The other freshman dorms (Potomac, Patapsco, Chesapeake) are also nice. Patapsco was recently renovated and Susquehanna is being renovated this summer. The upper class men housing is also nice with many apartment options on campus.
    Academic Rigor

    UMBC has high quality teaching and therefore the classes are more challenging, but with hard work and effort anything is possible. Not only will you learn about the subject you are taking, you will be actively engaged in class and will retain the information you need to succeed in the next steps of your life.
    Tips for prospective students

    I would recommend staying the night here to see what a college student's life is really like. Be sure to try the food and see the dorms! I would also recommend attending a class to see the academic side of the university.

    UMBC has an excellent academic atmosphere as well as an amazing president. There are so many different cultures, ethnicities, and perspectives on campus; it offers a rich opportunity to immerse yourself in a new and exciting environment. I would highly recommend this university to anyone who wants an ivy league quality education at an instate price.

    The price is fairly average but from what I can tell the experience is well above average.

    The people seemed really nice and it seemed like it wouldn't be hard to find something to do while your there.

    They seemed to have a very strong curriculum. also a lot of intelligent and capable instructors that seemed very involved when it came to students understand of the material.

    there is about as much variety in food as there is in the type of students. the culinary aspects of umbc respect other cultures and encourage all students to try new things.

    i don't live on campus, but from my friends, i can imagine dorm life to be safe, yet friendly.

    definately a step above ap level, my science classes challenge me to think about and apply the concepts, instead of letting me just memorize key facts.

    the commons is sort of the social hub on campus. the commons is where a student finds out about different events happening on campus, play games in the game room, eat, or just hang.

    the quality of the food varies from day to day. the dining hall is all you can eat but if you want to have a quick meal there are other options to accomidate your busy schedule.

    dorm life is not bad. the freshmen dorms are not that great if you live in potomac hall but they are pretty nice if you live in patapsco or susquehanna. after freshmen year, the dorms get much better. there is no curfew but after 2 am you must be a resident of the dorm to get through the door.

    the science programs at umbc are pretty rigorous but not totally impossible. join a study group with not just your friends but people that you are actually going to work hard with.
    Tips for prospective students

    i would suggest that a person who wants to have an active social life should get a car because umbc does not have a metro stop so many social events are hard to get to. if you do not have access to a car but want to go to umbc, make friends with someone who does have a car. also, go to the welcome week events because it is a great way to make friends.

    the university of maryland-baltimore county is a small, public university just outside of the city of baltimore. umbc strives to create well rounded students through a core curriculumn which includes arts and humanities, history, mathematics, foreign language, english, etc. in recent years, umbc has been known more for their superior science program.

    it is always hard to learn to get along with people you may or may not know. personally, i had a bad experience, but it was simply roommate issues. the ra's and community directors are good about listening to student's concerns and suggestions, as well as coming up with fun activities for the halls to come together and hang out.

    there is a lot of homework, and it is not easy. usually, the trick is to come up with solutions yourself with relatively little information to go off of from the professor. but the professors grade fairly, and it is a great feeling to know the grade was well earned.
    Tips for prospective students

    be prepared to spend many afternoons and evenings studying! professors expect you to know the material, and whatever was covered in class, you should expect to remember all of it for the next class.

    it is a very great school if you are dedicated to learning and willing to put a fair amount of effort into your school work. it is pretty easy to make friends, but you have to join clubs and get involved to find the friends. the food is okay, but most things are loaded with salt and grease.

    the campus police drive chargers and are constantly outing people for doing drugs in the dorm. they are more than happy to help you out when you need it.

    the quad is the center of the school and is a great place to hang out if you want to be outside. be warned, there are a whole lot of squirrels.

    there are a lot of on campus activities during the first semester at the school, but after that it's all up to you to find something to do. alcohol doesn't have too much presence in the school, which is great, but it can lead to letdowns for those who were looking for those crazy parties everyone talks about.

    the dining hall has amazing food during the first few weeks. after that, you'll find yourself eating food from the fast food places more than you'd like.

    depending on what dorm you're in, the school can be the best thing you've ever done or the most useless waste of room and board. dorm life is a hit or miss.

    it's not easy.

    if you plan on living on campus, make as many friends as you can in the first semester with the same classes. you'll find yourself studying with them more often than you would think, and you'll find that the most successful students are the ones who do so.

    umbc is a great technical college. learning is mostly done with your peers and not your professors (as it should be) although there are way too many heavily accented professors for the students to easily understand what it is the professor expects from the students.

    there are several police cars constantly driving or parked somewhere around campus. the campus is very well secured, except for petty crimes, of course.

    there are all kinds of clubs on campus. it is impossible for anyone to be on campus for an entire semester and not find a club they might like.

    this university is definitely worth the money as far as education is concerned.

    there are several clubs open to students. downtown baltimore is not too far from the main campus too.

    as a part of greek life i can honestly say it was the best choice i've made in college so far joining a greek organization. it not only connects you with so many people on campus, there's plenty of outreach to the community through community service projects and even connecting with other chapters in your organization across the country. the greek community is very tight nit but we're always looking for new members.

    there's lots of events on campus that get the student body up in arms. every year during spring semester there's quadmania where there are tons of activities and usually a headline band playing on campus (this year it's gym class heroes). aside from that at the beginning of the school year there's a lot of welcome activities including big crazy fun night.

    for it's price umbc is pretty good at fulfilling your needs. the education rivals top schools like stanford and still is cheaper than a lot of other schools around. in the long run it's a great education for the money you're paying.
    What to do for fun

    there's plenty to do for fun around campus. if you're into sports but aren't on scholarship there's a number of intramural and club teams from ultimate frisbee to rugby. aside from sports there are countless clubs you can join on campus.

    the most common place for food is the dining hall which provides great breakfast, lunch and dinner and occasionally will even have specials like crab legs or lobster. aside from that the commons and the chik-fil-a/starbucks in the uc building are great choices. at any time you have a wide variety of places to help fill your stomach during your day.

    whether it's an older building like chesapeake or a newer building like harbor, the dorms are great. they have living conditions for any type of lifestyle and can accommodate your needs. the ra's for each floor in your dorm building come up with events to help connect with the rest of your floor and even the rest of the umbc community.

    the classes can be tough, but they are definitely manageable. with numerous tutoring opportunities and places like the writing center to help you out, there are plenty of tools at your disposal to help you succeed. the professor's are also committed to teaching you and helping you become better scholastically and professionally.

    come in ready to work because it's not high school. that being said you can have fun at umbc and get a great education. through every single course you'll not only learn a new subject, but you'll learn skills that go towards your future career.

    We have a game room on campus for the gamers. They include pool tables, air hockey tables, pinball machines etc. We have indoor and outdoor pools. We have a full service gym that includes a basketball court. We have weekly movie nights on campus.

    Take a course in time management to ensure your success. Keep in touch with your professors when you feel that you are not mastering the materials taught in the class. Ask questions often when you feel unsure about something. Attend classes regularly, even if the professor doesn't take attendance. Get a classmates telephone just in case you have to miss class so you won't fall behind.

    The best residential halls are Erickson and Harbor because they are suite-style. However, one good thing about all of the halls is that the max number of people sharing a bathroom is 6.

    Not too many crimes in the area. UMBC is nestled in the bosom of a quiet suburban neighborhood. There were a couple of instances of people being approached by strange people and maybe one robbery (don't quote me on it). The rule of thumb is: never walk alone, especially at night. But that goes for everywhere doesn't it?

    It's a quality school for the price. UMBC likes to boast that it is an Up-and-coming University! Which is true...but it has been for like the past 10 years. However, the job prospects for UMBC graduates are really good. Apparently companies like UMBC grads which probably has something to do with UMBC's academic reputation.

    Refer to my 'make new friends' suggestion. Seriously, if you don't have any friends life on campus will be hard. Harder still if you don't have your own transportation. However, you can take public transit to the harbor (Just take the bus) and from the Inner Harbor you can use the Collegetown shuttle to get to Towson, MICA, Penn Station, Morgan State, Loyola, etc. Just look up Baltimore Collegetown shuttle. Oh yeah I almost forgot about the shuttle that takes you to Arundel which has a casino now.
    Food and Dining

    It's college food and if you've ever been to college you will know what that means. If you haven't been to college then you'll learn. It isn't terrible and they do have a lot of options. As far as college food goes it ranks pretty decently but eventually you'll get sick of their undercooked rice tasting like there was something funny in the water (seriously, what is that?). But don't be discouraged, just try a meal from there it isn't too bad.
    Dorm Life

    Their dorms are pretty decent. The new ones are great and the old ones are ok. I've never seen a roach and never heard of anyone with a rodent problem so that's a plus.

    This isn't a place for slackers. Well...maybe if you're Tony Stark you could get away with it (But then again...why aren't you at MIT Mr. Stark?). At orientation they will let you know that academics are no joke. You have been warned.

    -Study smart, not hard. I know people that study hours on end by themselves and fail just as miserably as people that didn't study at all (Actually, I was one of those students). The professors are generally friendly and willing to help but they won't go out on a limb to help you if you don't try. You have to come to them first and let them know that you are serious about your academics. -Please have fun and try to make new friends! Networking is very important and you realize this more as you get older and have to rely on yourself. This is especially true on a small campus like UMBC and you will be surprised at what and who people know. It gets pretty boring on the weekends too so those extra friends come in handy for weekend entertainment. -Don't let a bad grade get you down. Even if it is the last day of class you can still talk to your professor about your current situation and express your concern. They are people too -- not robots. Well, some of them I'm not too sure of but for the most part they understand and most likely have been in a similar situation. -Let it go. This is a personal piece of advise that most people won't bother to give. What I mean is that everyone runs into problems whether it's social, personal, monetary or just a bad day. What you have to realize however, is that these things pass. If things are getting too difficult or you need someone to talk to then find someone. There are counselors and a whole Psychology department to talk to. You don't need to hold it in, just let it go. I didn't let it go and I ended up with a 1. -something GPA my freshman year. I'm not a dumb kid and I didn't party but I let personal problems and depression get in the way of my academics. Don't you do the same thing.

    UMBC has its own Campus Police and they are on patrol 24 hours a day. Always responding to any threat on campus within a second's notice. You can also sign up for campus alerts, that are sent to your phone to let you know if there is any immediate threat on or off campus.

    No complaints. Lots of options and an awesome omelet bar - they have a guy who makes eggs to order for you! :D There's also a salad bar, a pizza station, and plenty of other stuff in the dining hall. Great desserts, too. If you don't feel like eating in the dining hall, there's also lots of options in the Commons.
    Dorm Life

    I love living in the dorms. I'm in a Living-Learning Community, which means I'm living on a floor of people who are interested in similar things. Everyone I live with is pretty chill, and the RA is really helpful. I also live in the newest wing on campus, so I might be a bit biased about the room quality. My room is huge and I share it with one roommate. I also have a really big bathroom that my roommate and I share with a room on the other side of the bathroom. It's a pretty sweet set up.
    Academic Rigor

    I haven't had any problems so far, but it is a challenging school. There are lots of opportunities to try new things and the professors actually care about you. I also suggest taking a first year seminar, because they can be a ton of fun.

    It's what you make it. If you're someone who likes partying, there are parties to be found, but there's a ton happening on campus besides parties if you look around. And even though lots of people go home on weekends, there's still tons to do - bus trips, guest speakers, etc. I haven't had a dull weekend yet! Also, they give great scholarships, so apply!

    There's variety on campus. The food isn't always the best, but it's college food. I'm just glad they have a Starbucks on campus. There's also a Chick-Fil-A if you're into that sort of thing. As far as the dining hall goes, I love that it's buffet style, but the taste of the food is a hit or miss type situation.

    I am a girl who is 5 foot 4 inches and 110 lb. I feel relatively safe walking around campus at night. However, I don't recommend it. This semester I will be working at the desk in a different residence hall from my own. There will be times when I have to walk back to my dorm very early or very late. There are blue lights on campus, and the halls are close together. Im not uncomfortable with it, but if you are, someone will walk with you, whether a friend or campus police.
    Greek Life

    The frats and sororities that have houses have them off campus, in Arbutus mostly. Nearly everyone can find a group that they want to fit in with. It just depends on whether or not they want you and if you want to devote your time and money.
    Clubs and Activities

    There are many clubs and activities available. Finding the time in your busy schedule will be the problem. First semester will be overwhelming. Everyone ants you to get involved, but you don't need to overload yourself. Everyone on campus puts academics first, even the frat boys.

    Anyone who is looking to focus on their education and get serious is a good fit for UMBC. You will have fun, but if you are not willing to buckle down during the semester, finals week is going to be a terrible experience, take it from every single second semester freshman at UMBC.

    True Grit, the school's retriever mascot, has a statue outside of the RAC. People rub his nose on their way into the RAC for basketball games and such. The actual mascot has ancestors who are still around. True Grit used to attend the outdoor sporting events.

    UMBC offers an excellent education for a relatively low state tuition. In the honors college, you can receive and Ivy league quality education.

    SEB (Student Events Board) puts together events for students year around: homecoming in the fall, quadmania in the spring, along with a variety of fun filled events throughout the year including comedians and concerts. There is a state park nearby, Patapsco State Park. The Baltimore Inner Harbor is 20 minutes away. There are a few parties every weekend or so on or near campus, but you don't have to be under the influence to have a good time at UMBC. No one forces it.

    Great food options that change daily unlike UMD. The attitude of some of the employees could improve though. There is a dinning hall (True Grit) that is buffet style.

    Participate in social events at the school, they often offer a lot of things there and most of it is free or almost free. Make sure you know what you are doing, the general engineering advisors (for freshmen/sophomore) was really unhelpful to me. Also be proactive about school work. There are helpful tutors offered at the school's library or you can ask a teacher's assistant (you usually have them in science-based courses) if you are shy.

    There is a police station at the edge of campus and cops patrol the area. There are blue emergency posts if you get scared or attacked. Campus police will escort you back to your car or dorm at night if you call the non-emergency number.

    There are sororities and frats for all types of people. There are the traditional panhellenic ones and minority-interest ones.

    Unless you have a car, there isn't much to do. UMBC Transit offers buses that go around the Baltimore area. You can join clubs or hang out in a friend's dorm. On weekends, a lot of people go home so campus gets extra boring. Parties are rare (unless you throw them or have connections) and quickly shut down.
    Food and Dining

    There are different options for dining- The Commons and True Grit (the dining hall). On weekends, only dining hall and a burrito place is open. There are two stores (Outtakes and The Yum Shoppe) for if you don't want to use a meal but want food for later. There are also restaurants in the area.
    Dorm Life

    I live on the Humanities LLC (Living Learning Community floor). LLCs are good to get to know people who share similar interests. The different residential halls are fairly close so it isn't hard to walk if you have friends in other halls.

    UMBC prides itself on being an up and coming school. If you manage your time well, you shouldn't have too much trouble keeping up with work.

    Balance academic ad social life. Don't be afraid to ask your professors or TA for help- that's what they are there for. Get involved on campus!

    UMBC is a very safe campus, especially compared to other MD schools. I've been able to walk around nearly empty buildings very late at night and there have been no threats to me. There is also a system of blue lampposts on campus that have emergency buttons that you can press if you feel you are in danger.
    Greek Life

    From what I've heard, Greek Life is a bit more than just partying and getting drunk at UMBC. There is one particular fraternity that gives you tons of connections, from SGA to being an ambassador for Google. Being part of Greek life gives you connections, which is the major thing in my opinion (and of course a little partying here and there).
    Great for these types of students

    If you're interested in STEM, you're definitely in the right place. The same goes for if you like a sense of community and enjoy an atmosphere that's not cut-throat. But in truth, everyone can find their place at this school no matter what your major is or what background you're from.
    What to do for fun

    During the fall semester of 2012, I went to many cultural events on Friday nights (such as Caribbean Night and a Hispanic-Latino night). It's easy to get tickets for these events and then just get a group of your friends and have fun. There are also Open Mic nights on Thursdays and a Breakfast and Bingo event almost every Saturday evening. That just barely scratches the surface of all the countless things that you can do at UMBC during the week. If you want to know more, you're just gonna have to come and see for yourself!
    Food and Dining

    There are many options of where to eat at UMBC including the dining hall, the Commons (which has fast food type places), the University Center (which has Chik-fil-A and Starbucks), and the Administration building. The dining hall has vegan/vegetarian options as well as a salad bar and desserts. The way that meals and meal plans work is pretty fair for the most part.
    Dorm Life

    The dorm I live in now, Susquehanna, has a very strong community vibe with the RAs (Resident Assistants) and the CD (Community Director) always getting the residents involved. For the most part, people are very welcoming and don't mind having people walk in their room when the door's open.
    Academic Rigor

    All the STEM classes I've taken so far have been challenging but also very open to giving help. They've all been fair but at the same time, it's a challenge and really makes me think critically in different ways. Even if you don't take STEM classes, the rigor should still be high and rewarding.
    Tips for prospective students

    Get used to studying and doing homework in groups, as UMBC is built on community and interdependence. Be on the lookout for internships and research opportunities with the Shriver Center, it'll help launch your career in the future

    I love my dorm (for the most part). Harbor and Erickson hall are the two nicest dorms on campus. I live in a Living Learning Community in Harbor and get along with lots of people on my floor. Each Dorm has it's reputation so it depends on which you get.

    Some classes are harder than others. It's no Harvard but expect lots of reading. Of course, the rigor depends on the level and content of the class.

    College is as fun as you make it. Get involved on campus. Don't get behind on assignments. Ask teachers if you are confused or struggling.

    Campus safety is fantastic. I can walk from the RLC (The 24-hour study room in the library) at 2am and arrive safely to my dorm.

    I don't know much about the Greek life. I always see them in the breeze way fund raising. We have 4 of the divine 9, but we also have a Jewish Frat, a christian Frat/Sorority. There is always some diversity to be found at UMBC.
    Clubs and Activities

    Their clubs are great, we have over 200 clubs, but I will say during free hour it is really hard to find which clubs to go to because EVERY CLUB schedules their meetings during free hour.
    Great for these types of students

    I say if you are academically driven mostly then UMBC is for you. If you're not going to do the work and laze around than UMBC is not for you.

    Um. Petting True Grit (The dog in front of the RAC) before a test is a tradition. I did it once and passed a test that I thought I failed!

    For the education a person gets at this school in-state tuition is excellent, also this school is a great commuter school. So if you have to work after or before class this school is prefect!
    What to do for fun

    Hm. For Fun you could go to the mall on the weekends or a lot of clubs meet on the weekend. I keep mentioning weekends because half the school goes home on the weekends. The school is such a huge commuter school. Um a lot of clubs meet on the weekday also, there are 200+ clubs. We have something called Free hour which is a Free hour Monday,Wednesdays and Fridays. It is from 12-1, a lot of clubs meet during that time, its cool but kinda sucks because ALL clubs think the same and schedule there meetings during the same time . So don't take on too much. UMBC is not a party school at all, if you are looking for a party school than college park might be a better fit
    Food and Dining

    True Grits is decent, it is the main dining hall the food is the best during Welcome Week so make sure to eat there during that week. Also if someone says 'D-Hall' they are referring to True Grits. Sometimes the food at True Grits doesn't go together or is not good at all. Luckily the pasta/pizza station does not change so it is a good default. There are places to eat outside of True Grits, such as Jow-Jing (asian food), Salsaritas (mexican food), The Grill (Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, etc...), Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks....there are more food places but the important part is to know that the ones outside of True Grits close at 6pm and are not open on weekends except Salsaritas( stays open everyday later than True Grits). True Grits also has something called Late Night which starts and ends at 2 am Sunday-Thursday, they have pretty good food at late night. Also Flex dollars, okay this had to be explained to me like 35345364674547 times but heres the explanation if you get food and it goes over the price of a meal (conversion is $5.50) then the remainder of the cost goes into your flex dollars. The Flex dollars will creep up on you, I ran out of Flex the middle of the semester and regretted it during finals when I was up late studying and wanted food, but couldn't spare a meal. Be careful!
    Dorm Life

    The dorms are really nice, but they can be expensive. Like most colleges certain dorms are better than others, but you have to cope with whatever you get. Erickson and Harbor are the upper classman dorms and they are the best, however they can be very expensive. The Walker Apartments are the best though!
    Academic Rigor

    I am a current student at UMBC and I can stay I stress over grades. UMBC is really hard, but rewarding, The stress is worth it as long as you do well and try your best you will be good. Work hard and don't get involved in the drama of UMBC
    Tips for prospective students

    UMBC is hard, but the payoff is great! The fact of the matter is this is a FANTASTIC education. As long as you stay on top of your classes it will be fine.

    UMBC is a very good school, academically, this school will kick your butt if you are not organized however. Organization is key, I cannot stress that enough, organization can be the difference between a passing student and a failing student. This school is hard, but when you pass the class with an 'A' a since of accomplishment is felt.

    Mostly, I hang out with my friends for fun and participate in events on campus. There are movie nights in one of the larger lecture halls, during which they air films that came out recently, and there are open-mic nights every Thursday in the Sports Zone!

    The food on campus is okay, there's nothing special about any of it. The dining hall is decent, and it where I go when I want to make sure I am getting all my vegetables! The Commons has a larger variety with mini restaurants like Salsarita's, Mondo's Subs, a salad bar, etc...
    Dorm Life

    To me, the dorm life on this campus is pretty ideal! I've enjoyed living on campus mainly because it is quiet and less stressful than commuting would be. The party scene is definitely less active on this campus than on other campuses, so for people looking for that atmosphere, I would say its not the right fit for you.
    Academic Rigor

    I think academic rigor at UMBC depends on your major. UMBC is a research and an honors university that focuses a great amount on math and sciences. I think UMBC expects quality work from their students rather than quantity.
    Tips for prospective students

    Make sure you get involved! A good portion of the students who attend UMBC are commuters, so the campus isn't very lively on the weekends. There are always events to attend, but you have to make an effort to find them; they won't be shoved in your face. Get involved in a few organizations (there are quite a few here!) and think about getting an on campus job if you have the time (there are many opportunities for student employment here.) Also, use your resources. The faculty and staff have done a great of putting together several resources for incoming and current students at UMBC.

    You will not walk around campus without seeing UMBC police somewhere. In addition to campus police, the county police station is located directly next to campus as well. There is no threatening feel about the campus. As long as a student takes normal precaution as they would in any public place, there is no need to worry about safety.
    Greek Life

    There are several sororities and fraternities on campus. Each one is unique in their own way, but they all act like a family when together. If you love to meet people and love social interaction, UMBC's greek life is definitely the way to go. They are constantly raising money for charitable causes, and having fun while doing it.

    So so many to choose from. Club or intramural sports, dance clubs, a capella groups, tae kwon do-- you name it, we have it. And if we don't have it, you can start it.

    UMBC is one of the most diverse schools in the country when it comes to race and culture. We have students from a variety of locations in the U.S. as well as several international students.This school is a place where anyone could fit in.

    During you're time at UMBC, you will probably get a chance to have a one on one conversation with the amazing president, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski. Every spring we have Quadmania, that features a concert with a famous band or musician and a carnival, hosted on our very own campus.

    There are movies every weekend in a lecture hall which transforms into a movie theater. And there are always events going on on campus. If you're not doing school work, there is always something going on whether it be a sporting event, Students Event Board event, or a club sponsored event. There are a wide variety of clubs you can join to keep busy!

    The food is tasty for a college campus. There are plenty of venues to choose from including the dining hall, Chick-Fil-A, Starbuck's, Au Bon Pain, Wild Greens salad bar, Jow Jing Chinese Cousine, Salsarita's Mexican Cousine, and more.

    Tuition is very affordable (around $10,000) especially for one of the top colleges in the country right now. You will not only emerge from UMBC with more knowledge in your field than almost any other school, but you will also build connections that stick and will help you be successful in your career and grad school.

    The UMBC Commons is a great place to hangout. Comfortable furniture with ample space, plenty of restaurants and gaming rooms. The Game room has a pool hall, Ping-Pong tables and Xbox360 connectivity with Big-screen game nights and many activities throughout the week. The commons also has a great bar and a sports center.

    From the Yum Shoppe to True Grits, the dining offers a varied selection of good foods and snacks. Food plans are easily obtained through the college and hours of operation are very convenient for students regardless of class times.
