Categories Comments Great for these types of students Great for students who are goal-setters. Many people can be overwhelmed by the many clubs and activities at UMBC. It is easy to become distracted.
Tips for prospective students Be sure to meet with your adviser, they seek to help. Also, try not to be involved with too many activities, the grades come first. Without good grades, you will not be at UMBC for long. Remember, it is an honors university; good grades are expected. Not to worry though, there is still plenty of room for mess-ups.
Bang for the buck The tuition price is good for instate students, however it is mandatory to have a meal plan if in the dorms. The meal plan price is slightly expensive compared to purchasing and making your own food. Nevertheless, it is easy to earn money by applying for the many internships and jobs due to a website dedicated to their search.
Am enjoying being here There is always an activity at UMBC. The gym is open to anyone to exercise and there are many clubs to join. The teachers are encouraging as well.
Am learning a lot I did not expect to learn much due to entering this college with AP credits, but I have still learned many new things due to the immense variety of classes. In my internship, 90% or more of my daily activities were taught.

Am enjoying being here My bio teacher tells jokes, my chem teacher is a pyromaniac! excellent environment and activities during the week.
Am learning a lot Lots of information, but if you keep on top of the material, it is pretty easy to pass the exams

Categories Comments Great for these types of students This school is great for hard-working, determined, goal-oriented, focused, self-reliant, fun-having students.
Tips for prospective students Never be afraid to ask for help. Professors are there to help you. Make new friends. Try new things. You may be surprised of the things that may spark your interest. Turn in your work on time and get a tutor for hard subjects. Plan ahead. Get to know your roommate. Relax.
Bang for the buck UMBC's cost of attendance is actually quite low compared to other Maryland colleges. Also, as a scholarship recipient myself, I can also say that UMBC offers many different scholarships and loans to incoming freshman to ensure that students are taken care of. Also, I must say that UMBC's prices are definitely worth it for the wonderful educational, professional, and extracurricular opportunities it offers!
Am enjoying being here I LOVE UMBC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love school and I love the students there also! They make you feel welcomed right away and there are always events to bring a sense of community to students and to provide opportunities for fun and entertainment! Go Retrievers!
Am learning a lot I am learning SO much at UMBC. They really make sure that you are getting a top rate education! I really learned a lot this past semester and I feel like I am learning on a high level. The information they provide is very helpful and applies to our everyday lives. You will always be learning a lot here!

Categories Comments Great for these types of students If you're an engineer, you'll love it here. If you're a writer, you'll love it here. Artists and scientists alike will find what they need at this school. If you're a language student or are focusing on politics, then you would be better suited for another college.
Tips for prospective students Apply early and don't stress about your SATs. What matters most is how you used your years in high school; get active, be a leader, and join as many extra curricular and volunteer programs as you can. Those are what really count.
Bang for the buck This University is by no means expensive, yet you get more out of it than just about any other Maryland school, including those that cost three times as much.
Am enjoying being here Every day I find new reasons to love this campus. The atmosphere is friendly and there is always some extra curricular activity to participate in. Going from Physics 122 to a match of HvZ then finish with a run around the track and fencing practice makes for a wonderful evening.
Am learning a lot The one-on-one relations between student and professors is unprecedented in such a high-ranking institution. The classes are well structured and you will learn what you come here to learn.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students UMBC is great for all types of students. For students who fall behind academically, there are a variety of tutorial centers and sessions. For students who are always ahead academically, there are opportunities to work as a tutor. Regardless of academic standing, the general body of students at UMBC are dedicated to academic success. If you know you want to succeed, come to UMBC.
Tips for prospective students Be ready to work, but also be ready to enjoy yourself. The school has a number of activities and clubs to partake in but do understand that the primary focus is education. Some freshman do not tend to notice the strain on academic success as much as upperclassmen do. In addition to enjoying themselves, the general body of students focus on education. This principle, if adopted prior to entry into the university, will greatly contribute to academic success. Also, be sure to develop study groups.
Bang for the buck As a student seeking to obtain scholarships, I understand monetary value and I would definitely say UMBC is worth the buck. Although not as expensive as Ivy League school's the university provides network opportunities and facilities of comparable class. The dedication to success fuels both students and faculty and highly contributes to the increasing number of meritorious accomplishments by the school.
Am enjoying being here I love being at UMBC. The opportunities available for success are countless. There are tutorial sessions for every course, especial the entry level courses taken by freshmen. In addition, there are discussion sections after lecture. These sessions help to clarify information learned during lecture. There are a variety of events that occur on campus as well. The dormitories also host events to get students active and connected. It's all a very enriching experience.
Am learning a lot The University of Maryland Baltimore County presents me with many opportunities I previously did not know existed. Most notable is the Shriver Center--the institute in charge of securing internships for students. The university is equipped with fully dedicated staff and degree focused students who know that it's cool to be smart. This feeling has also been transferred to me and is a contributor to my success.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is pretty decent. Often you can see police cars patrolling campus. Also, they have blue lights around the campus, and if you ever feel nervous, you can get an escort to your car at night.
Clubs and Activities They have a lot of clubs and activities if you just check them out.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Traditions, they do not really have any. No unusual locations that I can think of either.
Bang for the buck One of the nicest things about UMBC is that they do not cost much, being one of the less expensive public universities. However, the academic rigor does not decrease because of this. Many teachers do a great job teaching, and have had a lot of extraordinary experiences that they are often willing to share with their students.
What to do for fun There are movies every weekend on campus for only two dollars, and you get free popcorn. Sometimes they can have some cool events. Mostly there are a lot of clubs, and they often have a few events over each semester that are kind of fun.
Food and Dining The food is not that great, and there are not many options. The best place I can think of is the subway, and that is off from the main campus. In addition, on the weekends, nearly every place you can get food closes down.
Dorm Life I do not live on campus, so I can not be very helpful in this area. However, I know from friends that you can have questionable room mates or great ones, so it depends on the dorm and room mate.
Academic Rigor Academic rigor is decent, and generally depends on each course and professor. Some courses are made incredibly easy because of point distribution or easier exams. Other classes are made difficult because of the harder grading, no curving, or just more difficult material. Another factor that makes the classes more difficult in general is the large class sizes, ranging from labs of 30 to lectures of 300.
Tips for prospective students Turn all required documents in before the deadline, and check that they have received them all. Also, email or talk in person to an academic adviser and your financial adviser to keep on top of financial aid requirements and to choose the best courses for you in your first semester. Lastly, sign up for an early orientation session to be able to enroll in the classes you want.
In three sentences UMBC has a great chance for doing research, since nearly all of the faculty preside over their own lab and require undergraduate workers. However, the application process is a pain because they do not seem to keep on top of everything very well. You must be prepared to take your own initiative and stay on top of all documents and requirements.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Passionate, driven, and inspired.
Tips for prospective students There is not much to do on the weekends on campus. Socially, The best thing to do is to get involved in other activities. Don't lock yourself away in your room studying all the time. Get out and have fun. Academically, Make sure you work hard. Be open-minded, not crazy.
Bang for the buck I would think so. I mean, a number one school in my state!
Am enjoying being here There is not much to do on the weekends, but academically, it is great.
Am learning a lot I am learning about myself and how to work better with other people. I am learning to be open about many different people and cultures. I am learning that college is not easy and it's a lot of work, but it's also ALOT of fun.

Tips for prospective students I think that if you want to get the real UMBC experience you should live on campus. I also advise becoming active in student groups and organizations.
Bang for the buck One of my favorite things about this school is that they have this concurrent enrollment between their school and other schools in the Maryland area. The great thing about this program is that you can take classes at other schools such as Towson University and Morgan State University that may not be available at UMBC and it is still covered under your UMBC tuition.
Am enjoying being here I like being at UMBC because there is a lot of diversity in the students. They have loads of things to do on and off campus. They do alot of bus trips to New York City and Philadelphia that are very cheap.
Am learning a lot There are so many different subjects being taught here. Almost anything you may be interested in, they have at UMBC. Almost all the classes I've had at this school, I have enjoyed.

Tips for prospective students Come visit UMBC for yourself to get a real feel for the University. Step out of your major periodically and have some fun with your classes! :) I am completing my undergraduate studies in Pre-Medicine but I enjoy taking classes in the social sciences and arts & humanities. Stay in constant contact with your advisor. They are there to help you and the thousands of questions you may have for them. Have balance. Prioritize your homework/studying, clubs, and leisure time because you can easily slide into chaos if you do not. Know what you are in school for and surround yourself with people that share your same drive for success. Seize every opportunity that comes your way and have fun growing and developing YOU!
Bang for the buck UMBC is ranked as one of the most affordable institutions of higher learning in Maryland. I know that when I tell my other friends who attend Maryland universities like Stevenson and College Park what I pay for tuition they get jealous. The cost is most affected by whether you commute or live on campus and what residence hall you live in along with your meal plan of choice. The apartment housing can be a bit pricey and most students only live in them if they have a nice scholarship to pay the expenses. Overall, you are truly getting a Harvard education for a public, state university price.
Am enjoying being here For the most part the people, both students and faculty, are outstanding and are always willing to go out of their way to help you when asked. There are tons of events going on on the campus during the day and at night ranging from Open Mic Nights - where our talented student body displays their musical skills by rapping, singing, reciting poetry, or playing various instruments - to karaoke and ice cream socials. There are a few campus parties (some school-sponsored and others thrown by students) but they never cause any serious problems. UMBC is nothing like College Park in terms of a party school which can be a good and bad thing at times but as long as you get out and meet cool people you will always find ways to have fun. All in all, UMBC has a small-community feel to it and is nice for students that do not want to live too far away from home or feel like just a number among many students. The faculty will get to know you by name and genuinely care about your well-being. I have personally connected with so many faculty members in my first year that I know I will stay in contact with in the future.
Am learning a lot UMBC definitely provides a cultivating environment for learning through different cultural and social perspectives. Tolerance of those around you is highly stressed and a core value at the University. There are numerous cultural and social organizations available for students to join that are not exclusive, but inclusive. We want to learn about everyone and everything, so the more different you are the more of an opportunity there is for learning about each other. I encourage students, especially first-year students, to step out of your comfort zone and keep your mind open to all of the classes available. A class may at first sound boring but you will always be surprised to find yourself interested in the subject matter because our professors encourage thinking about and solving issues presented in the curricula in a non-traditional way. Class discussions are a major focus in many of the first-year seminars which always brings up an opportunity for hearing a different viewpoint or angle that challenges your previously held opinions. This occurred for me in my Sociology 101 lecture and First Year Seminar class on social justice and equality in education.

Categories Comments Campus Safety i feel safe on campus. parking is a mess, though. (i don't have a car, so it's all good :)
Greek Life they have sororities and fraternities.
Clubs and Activities they're pretty active and try to involve people.
Bang for the buck i think so. it gives me the opportunity to learn, to do research in a lab, to meet professionals in my field (scientific research). it is one of the least expensive colleges in my state (aside from a community college- but i already went to one of those). a good choice if you ask me.
What to do for fun what you normally do for fun, what else?
Food and Dining it's like all campus food, anywhere you go. a small amount for a lot of money. they do try to be healthy and environmentally conservative. and they do have a chick-fil-a, though now everyone wants a chipoltle. a good bit of selection, but it's like anywhere you'll go.
Dorm Life i don't live in on campus, but i hear it's not that lively. although there are people who are trying to change that, and if you have friends, you can always do something with them. umbc provides transit near them, although the schedule can be erratic, it is consistent for the semester and there is even a bus that goes to the nearby mall.
Academic Rigor they have good, challenging science classes. the honors program is also good. they provide interesting topics, and help a student to grow.
Tips for prospective students expect large classes, and sometimes you can really tell that some teachers are there for their research and not for teaching.
In three sentences they have great research opportunities. however, they have large classes. there is also more of a focus on learning than sports or parties.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UMBC is a very safe campus. Blue lights are posted all over campus and the police make rounds every night to ensure safety. Escorts can also be requested from the police if needed.
Greek Life There is Greek life at UMBC, however there are not fraternity/sorority houses on campus.
Clubs and Activities UMBC offers a wide range of clubs to be involved in on campus. If the club you want to join doesn't exist it is also possible to create a new club. The activities during the week are great but there are less events held on the weekends.
Great for these types of students -Academically focused -STEM majors -Music majors
Bang for the buck UMBC is tied with Yale for quality of undergraduate education. The teachers here are qualified and do an excellent job of preparing you for your future endeavors.
What to do for fun There are plenty of clubs on campus to be involved in to have fun. There are also club sports and intramural sports offered. Some major events are Big Crazy Fun night for freshman and Quadmania which is held every spring.
Food and Dining The food at UMBC is decent. There is a dining hall which is an all you can eat style and a meal can be used here. UMBC also has the commons which offers a variety of food at small restaurants. They offer Italian, Chinese, Mexican, as well as subs and hamburgers. Meals are also accepted here. There is also a chick-fil-A and a Starbucks on campus. The only problem with the food is the availability on the weekends. The dining hall has limited hours and only one place is open in the commons each year.
Dorm Life I live in Susquehanna and I think this is the best freshman dorm because it has a great sense of community. The other freshman dorms (Potomac, Patapsco, Chesapeake) are also nice. Patapsco was recently renovated and Susquehanna is being renovated this summer. The upper class men housing is also nice with many apartment options on campus.
Academic Rigor UMBC has high quality teaching and therefore the classes are more challenging, but with hard work and effort anything is possible. Not only will you learn about the subject you are taking, you will be actively engaged in class and will retain the information you need to succeed in the next steps of your life.
Tips for prospective students I would recommend staying the night here to see what a college student's life is really like. Be sure to try the food and see the dorms! I would also recommend attending a class to see the academic side of the university.
In three sentences UMBC has an excellent academic atmosphere as well as an amazing president. There are so many different cultures, ethnicities, and perspectives on campus; it offers a rich opportunity to immerse yourself in a new and exciting environment. I would highly recommend this university to anyone who wants an ivy league quality education at an instate price.

Categories Comments Food and Dining there is about as much variety in food as there is in the type of students. the culinary aspects of umbc respect other cultures and encourage all students to try new things.
Dorm Life i don't live on campus, but from my friends, i can imagine dorm life to be safe, yet friendly.
Academic Rigor definately a step above ap level, my science classes challenge me to think about and apply the concepts, instead of letting me just memorize key facts.

Categories Comments Campus Safety i can count on one of my hands how many safety problems that occur on campus. if there is a problem, then the umbc police is right on campus.
Greek Life little to none at all.
Clubs and Activities many different clubs for people to join. there is something for everyone here.
Great for these types of students umbc is great for people are not big on partying but like to party every now and then. umbc is great for people interested in the sciences.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus i can't think of any right now but if you decide to come here then maybe you will find some.
Bang for the buck umbc is a good school. i recommend it.
What to do for fun the commons is sort of the social hub on campus. the commons is where a student finds out about different events happening on campus, play games in the game room, eat, or just hang.
Food and Dining the quality of the food varies from day to day. the dining hall is all you can eat but if you want to have a quick meal there are other options to accomidate your busy schedule.
Dorm Life dorm life is not bad. the freshmen dorms are not that great if you live in potomac hall but they are pretty nice if you live in patapsco or susquehanna. after freshmen year, the dorms get much better. there is no curfew but after 2 am you must be a resident of the dorm to get through the door.
Academic Rigor the science programs at umbc are pretty rigorous but not totally impossible. join a study group with not just your friends but people that you are actually going to work hard with.
Tips for prospective students i would suggest that a person who wants to have an active social life should get a car because umbc does not have a metro stop so many social events are hard to get to. if you do not have access to a car but want to go to umbc, make friends with someone who does have a car. also, go to the welcome week events because it is a great way to make friends.
In three sentences the university of maryland-baltimore county is a small, public university just outside of the city of baltimore. umbc strives to create well rounded students through a core curriculumn which includes arts and humanities, history, mathematics, foreign language, english, etc. in recent years, umbc has been known more for their superior science program.

Categories Comments Dorm Life it is always hard to learn to get along with people you may or may not know. personally, i had a bad experience, but it was simply roommate issues. the ra's and community directors are good about listening to student's concerns and suggestions, as well as coming up with fun activities for the halls to come together and hang out.
Academic Rigor there is a lot of homework, and it is not easy. usually, the trick is to come up with solutions yourself with relatively little information to go off of from the professor. but the professors grade fairly, and it is a great feeling to know the grade was well earned.
Tips for prospective students be prepared to spend many afternoons and evenings studying! professors expect you to know the material, and whatever was covered in class, you should expect to remember all of it for the next class.
In three sentences it is a very great school if you are dedicated to learning and willing to put a fair amount of effort into your school work. it is pretty easy to make friends, but you have to join clubs and get involved to find the friends. the food is okay, but most things are loaded with salt and grease.

Categories Comments Campus Safety the campus police drive chargers and are constantly outing people for doing drugs in the dorm. they are more than happy to help you out when you need it.
Greek Life has very little presence on campus.
Great for these types of students people who are good with technology or like video games. you'll really find yourself at home.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus the quad is the center of the school and is a great place to hang out if you want to be outside. be warned, there are a whole lot of squirrels.
Bang for the buck way better of a school than umd for the same cost.
What to do for fun there are a lot of on campus activities during the first semester at the school, but after that it's all up to you to find something to do. alcohol doesn't have too much presence in the school, which is great, but it can lead to letdowns for those who were looking for those crazy parties everyone talks about.
Food and Dining the dining hall has amazing food during the first few weeks. after that, you'll find yourself eating food from the fast food places more than you'd like.
Dorm Life depending on what dorm you're in, the school can be the best thing you've ever done or the most useless waste of room and board. dorm life is a hit or miss.
Academic Rigor it's not easy.
Tips for prospective students if you plan on living on campus, make as many friends as you can in the first semester with the same classes. you'll find yourself studying with them more often than you would think, and you'll find that the most successful students are the ones who do so.
In three sentences umbc is a great technical college. learning is mostly done with your peers and not your professors (as it should be) although there are way too many heavily accented professors for the students to easily understand what it is the professor expects from the students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety there are several police cars constantly driving or parked somewhere around campus. the campus is very well secured, except for petty crimes, of course.
Greek Life i do not know much about greek life.
Clubs and Activities there are all kinds of clubs on campus. it is impossible for anyone to be on campus for an entire semester and not find a club they might like.
Bang for the buck this university is definitely worth the money as far as education is concerned.
What to do for fun there are several clubs open to students. downtown baltimore is not too far from the main campus too.
Food and Dining there is a relatively limited kind of food available. the same dishes are served everyday.
Dorm Life the dorms are safe, with only students in each dorm who have access, and accompanied identified guests.
Academic Rigor the curriculum is very intensive, hence its ratings as one of the best schools in the area.
Tips for prospective students be sure you want to get into umbc, because once there, the competition begins. make up your mind right now to study (not party) when you get to school.
In three sentences it is an excellent school with a diverse population and a rigorous curriculum. the teachers, advisers and other faculty do care for students. umbc has an all-encompassing network base to assist graduates with job placements and the like.

What to do for fun getting involved with extracurricular activities. hang out with friends after school hours. enjoying your youth.
Food and Dining the food at the usg campus is really fresh and affordable.
Dorm Life i have never lived on campus-- my rating should not be counted.
Academic Rigor school is tough as it is. it really depends on the students habits as far as reading the textbook and participation in class. overall, professors really strive to see students excel.
Tips for prospective students if you are not too comfortable with living on campus, check out their satellite campus. (depending on your location) the usg campus is located in rockville, maryland.
In three sentences university of maryland-baltimore county is a well operated institution. their satellite campus at universities of shady grove is convenient for me as far as location. most of my professors are knowledgeable and highly intellectually stimulating.

Categories Comments Greek Life as a part of greek life i can honestly say it was the best choice i've made in college so far joining a greek organization. it not only connects you with so many people on campus, there's plenty of outreach to the community through community service projects and even connecting with other chapters in your organization across the country. the greek community is very tight nit but we're always looking for new members.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus there's lots of events on campus that get the student body up in arms. every year during spring semester there's quadmania where there are tons of activities and usually a headline band playing on campus (this year it's gym class heroes). aside from that at the beginning of the school year there's a lot of welcome activities including big crazy fun night.
Bang for the buck for it's price umbc is pretty good at fulfilling your needs. the education rivals top schools like stanford and still is cheaper than a lot of other schools around. in the long run it's a great education for the money you're paying.
What to do for fun there's plenty to do for fun around campus. if you're into sports but aren't on scholarship there's a number of intramural and club teams from ultimate frisbee to rugby. aside from sports there are countless clubs you can join on campus.
Food and Dining the most common place for food is the dining hall which provides great breakfast, lunch and dinner and occasionally will even have specials like crab legs or lobster. aside from that the commons and the chik-fil-a/starbucks in the uc building are great choices. at any time you have a wide variety of places to help fill your stomach during your day.
Dorm Life whether it's an older building like chesapeake or a newer building like harbor, the dorms are great. they have living conditions for any type of lifestyle and can accommodate your needs. the ra's for each floor in your dorm building come up with events to help connect with the rest of your floor and even the rest of the umbc community.
Academic Rigor the classes can be tough, but they are definitely manageable. with numerous tutoring opportunities and places like the writing center to help you out, there are plenty of tools at your disposal to help you succeed. the professor's are also committed to teaching you and helping you become better scholastically and professionally.
Tips for prospective students come in ready to work because it's not high school. that being said you can have fun at umbc and get a great education. through every single course you'll not only learn a new subject, but you'll learn skills that go towards your future career.
In three sentences the university of maryland, baltimore county is currently the number one up and coming university in america and for good reason. there are a number of great programs for any type of student and the social scene is growing rapidly. for my money umbc is a great choice.

Great for these types of students Great for students who are serious about learning and want a smaller school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UMBC is located in Catonsville which is close enough to the cities (Baltimore and D.C.) without having the problems that city living commends. You can't beat it!
Greek Life So many to choose from! These provide opportunities that will benefit you for the rest of your life!
Clubs and Activities UMBC has over 200 different clubs and organizations. There is a club fair at the beginning of the semester that I suggest to all incoming students. If you don't find a particular group you are looking for don't fret... there are many groups that are not represented at this fair but it is a great start! there are sports teams and recreational teams for those who just want to play for fun! the campus is full of green fields that will allow you to get a spur of the moment game going at anytime.
Great for these types of students Any students who are interested in a great research facilities as well as any science, math or engineering students as well.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Make sure to stop by the statue of True Grit, the retrievers mascot and give him a pat for good luck during you stay at UMBC!
Bang for the buck The academics thaqt UMBC provide are comprible to colleges near by that chrge twice or three times the tuition. They have been voted the number one up and coming university and there are many programs that will allow student to excel in their majors and begin research options earlier than other schools will which is essential to those students who want to follow an accelerated path.
What to do for fun UMBC has over 200 different clubs and organizations. There is a club fair at the beginning of the semester that I suggest to all incoming students. Food and Dining There are campus cafe`'s that are open from 7:30 to 11:30 that provide a variety of meal options. They provide the option for different meal card plans depending on your needs for those students that intend on eating on campus often. There is also a Chick-fil-a (^_^)
Dorm Life I live off campus but from hearing of other student experiences they do have many options for on campus living. I also see posts daily on message boards that advertise living options close to campus for those who do not want to live on campus.
Academic Rigor UMBC does set high standards however they provide many different services that will ensure you are able to meet those goals with ease. These include student and professor study sessions, student support services as well as groups that are specific to certain majors.
Tips for prospective students Attend the informative orientation sessions as they are quick and very organized with plenty time for student questions and feedback. Meet with your advisor early to ensure minimal problems during registration.
In three sentences The campus is very serene which makes it optimal for outside studying or other creative outlets. Friendly students who are eager to assist anyone who looks lost. Provides the diversity that any college student can appreciate and benefit from.

Clubs and Activities Dance club, Theater club, Rock Climbing club, Hiking club, Skiing club Pre-Physical Therapy Society
Great for these types of students High achievers
Bang for the buck Without help from any other financial service(example: parents, scholarships), it is hard to attend any college; yet, at this specific college I have found that it is hard to maintain a job and devote sufficient time to both my studies and my personal life
What to do for fun There are various activities to participate in such as dance club, chess club, hiking club. Yet, some of my personal favorites have been Pre-Physical Therapy Society and Rock Climbing club.
Tips for prospective students This school demands a lot of scholarly work to be done by its students. Therefore, I would strongly suggest that anyone interested in attending the school to be aware of their study habits and be ready to study a lot! But, be sure to make studying as fun as it can be. I suggest study groups and never fall behind in your study's because once you do it will become hard to catch back up.
In three sentences This school is very academically motivated and scholarly awarding. In short, I would recommend anyone to attend the school.

Categories Comments Greek Life We have a Greek student organization at University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Great for these types of students Our campus is great for all types of students from all ethnic backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, and religions.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus I appreciate that our campus offers festivals for all races, religions, and nationalities. We make sure that everyone on campus feels at home as much as possible. We do bake sales to raise money for different events. The professors invite the students to events that they give as well.
What to do for fun We have a game room on campus for the gamers. They include pool tables, air hockey tables, pinball machines etc. We have indoor and outdoor pools. We have a full service gym that includes a basketball court. We have weekly movie nights on campus.
Tips for prospective students Take a course in time management to ensure your success. Keep in touch with your professors when you feel that you are not mastering the materials taught in the class. Ask questions often when you feel unsure about something. Attend classes regularly, even if the professor doesn't take attendance. Get a classmates telephone just in case you have to miss class so you won't fall behind.

Greek Life Not part of it, but hear good things from friends that are.
Clubs and Activities There's a lot of clubs on campus. There are academic ones like the clubs for certain majors and there are fun ones like Humans vs Zombies. Take your pick!
Great for these types of students Science Technology Engineering Math
Bang for the buck It's overall a great school, especially if you are interested in a STEM program. There are many opportunities to do research or internships.
What to do for fun The campus is literally deserted on the weekends. Most people either go home, to College Park or stay in their rooms. Joining clubs/sports is a good way to keep busy. Our school is also not too far from the Inner Harbor and D.C.
Food and Dining The food was exciting at first, but then it just got boring and bad. You will most definitely miss a home-cooked meal. True Grits, the main dining hall does not have the best food all the time; it can be a hit or miss.
Dorm Life The best residential halls are Erickson and Harbor because they are suite-style. However, one good thing about all of the halls is that the max number of people sharing a bathroom is 6.
Academic Rigor The professors make sure you are constantly being challenged, but with the help of friends, tutors, TAs, the professors, you'll get through just fine.
Tips for prospective students Come here if you want to be challenged and eventually feel like you really earned your degree.

Food and Dining Food for me here was not a problem at all. Since I was a new student I got to try all the different type of food they have. Their are a variety of places to eat on campus. I just hope I do not get tired of it.
Dorm Life No opinion on dorm life since I am a commuter because I feel I will save more money. I heard the dorms are fairly expensive at UMBC so I chose to stay living at home.
Academic Rigor I was academically challenged in all my classes and I think it really helps you to be prepared for what is coming next semester. It also prepares you for you future career because everything you learn in class will benefit you in the long run.
Tips for prospective students Take advantage of your teachers after hours if your having trouble in that class. Keep a positive attitude and ask other students for help if you do not understand. Ge involved in clubs and activities because it is a great way to get to know the school and the people attending their like you.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Not too many crimes in the area. UMBC is nestled in the bosom of a quiet suburban neighborhood. There were a couple of instances of people being approached by strange people and maybe one robbery (don't quote me on it). The rule of thumb is: never walk alone, especially at night. But that goes for everywhere doesn't it?
Greek Life Can be better explained by this website: http://www.umbc.edu/greek/index.php Ask around and talk to people with similar interests.
Clubs and Activities Haven't participated in any clubs myself but there are a whole host of them offered at UMBC.
Great for these types of students Academics and the laid-back type. Party-seekers can still find parties if you know who to talk to.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Ultimate frisbee. Learn the sport.
Bang for the buck It's a quality school for the price. UMBC likes to boast that it is an Up-and-coming University! Which is true...but it has been for like the past 10 years. However, the job prospects for UMBC graduates are really good. Apparently companies like UMBC grads which probably has something to do with UMBC's academic reputation.
What to do for fun Refer to my 'make new friends' suggestion. Seriously, if you don't have any friends life on campus will be hard. Harder still if you don't have your own transportation. However, you can take public transit to the harbor (Just take the bus) and from the Inner Harbor you can use the Collegetown shuttle to get to Towson, MICA, Penn Station, Morgan State, Loyola, etc. Just look up Baltimore Collegetown shuttle. Oh yeah I almost forgot about the shuttle that takes you to Arundel which has a casino now.
Food and Dining It's college food and if you've ever been to college you will know what that means. If you haven't been to college then you'll learn. It isn't terrible and they do have a lot of options. As far as college food goes it ranks pretty decently but eventually you'll get sick of their undercooked rice tasting like there was something funny in the water (seriously, what is that?). But don't be discouraged, just try a meal from there it isn't too bad.
Dorm Life Their dorms are pretty decent. The new ones are great and the old ones are ok. I've never seen a roach and never heard of anyone with a rodent problem so that's a plus.
Academic Rigor This isn't a place for slackers. Well...maybe if you're Tony Stark you could get away with it (But then again...why aren't you at MIT Mr. Stark?). At orientation they will let you know that academics are no joke. You have been warned.
Tips for prospective students -Study smart, not hard. I know people that study hours on end by themselves and fail just as miserably as people that didn't study at all (Actually, I was one of those students). The professors are generally friendly and willing to help but they won't go out on a limb to help you if you don't try. You have to come to them first and let them know that you are serious about your academics. -Please have fun and try to make new friends! Networking is very important and you realize this more as you get older and have to rely on yourself. This is especially true on a small campus like UMBC and you will be surprised at what and who people know. It gets pretty boring on the weekends too so those extra friends come in handy for weekend entertainment. -Don't let a bad grade get you down. Even if it is the last day of class you can still talk to your professor about your current situation and express your concern. They are people too -- not robots. Well, some of them I'm not too sure of but for the most part they understand and most likely have been in a similar situation. -Let it go. This is a personal piece of advise that most people won't bother to give. What I mean is that everyone runs into problems whether it's social, personal, monetary or just a bad day. What you have to realize however, is that these things pass. If things are getting too difficult or you need someone to talk to then find someone. There are counselors and a whole Psychology department to talk to. You don't need to hold it in, just let it go. I didn't let it go and I ended up with a 1. -something GPA my freshman year. I'm not a dumb kid and I didn't party but I let personal problems and depression get in the way of my academics. Don't you do the same thing.
In three sentences UMBC is a quiet campus. The people there are fun and friendly but you won't find much to do on the weekends. The academics and the student support are great though.

In three sentences UMBC is a small, but quiet college in a sense. It's in a nice area and peaceful area, but it is not too far from shopping plaza's or anything of that sort. It is a tough university and requires a lot of studying and focus, really making it a piece of work.

Categories Comments Food and Dining Not really one to judge this topic because my brothers who attended this college often ate at home to save money.
Academic Rigor I heard from attending and graduated students from UMBC that the academics were pretty nice. However, I heard the reason for the why the academics were good was because there were not that many activities to do on campus. So you have nothing better to do than study.
Tips for prospective students May not be too distracted from studies due to low campus activities, however I heard that they're trying to promote more on campus activities to students.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Hang out with friends, mainly. There's the mall, the Inner Harbor, and nearby Catonsville.
Food and Dining There are plenty of options on campus and resources to let you know what's on the menu at the various places and what times they're open, etc. If you don't like dining hall food, there's always Chick Fil-A or Salsarita's.
Dorm Life Thankfully there are no common bathrooms! Each room also comes equipped with a programmable thermostat. However the size of the room and how well the equipment works depends on the residence hall and room. Sometimes it can be faulty.
Academic Rigor The professors expect you to be well-prepared for classes, though some classes are more lax than others. It ultimately depends on the professor.
Tips for prospective students Work hard! There are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of.
In three sentences People are not judgmental and they are really nice. The professors and university staff are willing to assist you. The campus is very beautiful and well-kept.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UMBC has its own Campus Police and they are on patrol 24 hours a day. Always responding to any threat on campus within a second's notice. You can also sign up for campus alerts, that are sent to your phone to let you know if there is any immediate threat on or off campus.
Clubs and Activities There seem to be a million and one different clubs on campus. Whether it be the Rugby club or even Sky Diving, there is always something to do for the students.
Bang for the buck UMBC was ranked as the number 1 Up and Coming University in the Nation for 2 years straight. They employ some of the brightest minds in their respective fields and produce even better students.
What to do for fun You can join any club that you could possibly imagine. Or be apart of the SEB (student events board) and help plan and set up various events on campus during the school year. You could always hop on the beltway and explore the many different things that Baltimore City has to offer.
Food and Dining UMBC has a very good dining hall as well as other options available to students on campus; such as Chick-fil-a and Subway.
Dorm Life UMBC offers a great variety of on campus housing. There are 6 dorms on campus and countless apartments.
Academic Rigor UMBC is an Honors University and is just as rigorous as any college/university you could name.
Tips for prospective students Make sure that you make time for your studies and your social life. If one starts to out weigh the other, it will become difficult for you. Also try to experience as much as you can. You do not want to finish college with any regrets.
In three sentences UMBC is a very diverse and fun school for any type of student. The professors are always available and every class is not overwhelmingly large. I would encourage anyone to apply to UMBC if they are applying to colleges.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are always police cars at night stationed around campus, and by using one of the campus' many blue phones you can even request an escort back to your dorm or car.
Greek Life Some of my friends are in sororities and they love it. There aren't any houses on campus or anything, but I've heard it's still a great way to meet people.
Clubs and Activities There are so many clubs that I had too many choices. Whatever your interest, there's something here for you.
Great for these types of students - Intelligent - Don't mind actually putting in work. - Don't want to party all the time.
Bang for the buck Great price (free!). I got a really good scholarship, and UMBC is pretty generous from what I've heard from other students.
What to do for fun The student events board (seb) does a ton of events on campus. There's always a bus trip every weekend and movies every week. If you bother checking out any posters or anything you can find something to do. If you go to Involvement fest you can join one of UMBC's 200+ clubs, too.
Food and Dining No complaints. Lots of options and an awesome omelet bar - they have a guy who makes eggs to order for you! :D There's also a salad bar, a pizza station, and plenty of other stuff in the dining hall. Great desserts, too. If you don't feel like eating in the dining hall, there's also lots of options in the Commons.
Dorm Life I love living in the dorms. I'm in a Living-Learning Community, which means I'm living on a floor of people who are interested in similar things. Everyone I live with is pretty chill, and the RA is really helpful. I also live in the newest wing on campus, so I might be a bit biased about the room quality. My room is huge and I share it with one roommate. I also have a really big bathroom that my roommate and I share with a room on the other side of the bathroom. It's a pretty sweet set up.
Academic Rigor I haven't had any problems so far, but it is a challenging school. There are lots of opportunities to try new things and the professors actually care about you. I also suggest taking a first year seminar, because they can be a ton of fun.
Tips for prospective students It's what you make it. If you're someone who likes partying, there are parties to be found, but there's a ton happening on campus besides parties if you look around. And even though lots of people go home on weekends, there's still tons to do - bus trips, guest speakers, etc. I haven't had a dull weekend yet! Also, they give great scholarships, so apply!
In three sentences Best decision of my life. Not really a party school, but has great professors and an even better president. I love it here!

Categories Comments Campus Safety There are police stationed all over the campus and there are multiple places you can go if you feel you are in danger.
Greek Life There are no sorority or fraternity houses on campus.
Clubs and Activities I have heard that there are over 250 clubs and activities on campus.
Great for these types of students Students who love to learn and are willing to have fun on their own rather than wait for it to come to them.
Bang for the buck I am out of state, and the school still would not be as expensive as it would be to attend some in state schools.
Food and Dining The food at the Commons was alright. Nothing too good or too bad.
Dorm Life From what I have seen, the dorms are very nice. They aren't too small and you even have your own sink and bathroom shared between only four people.
Academic Rigor This school holds academics in high regards from what I have researched and from what they said at the visit day. They have many tough classes in many different fields of study. There are also multiple study rooms.
In three sentences I am really excited about this school. It seems like a school for people who actually enjoy to learn rather than party. The people here also seem very nice and down to earth.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Incidents rarely happen and the police station is right off of campus.
Clubs and Activities Many clubs and social groups to join and thrive in.
Great for these types of students Geeks, Nerds, and anyone willing and wanting to become one.
Bang for the buck Half of the price of College Park and with much the same education.
What to do for fun Playing video games with friends is always a great passtime, events in the commons happen regularly.
Food and Dining Chik-fil-a, Salsaritas, and other nice places to eat.
Dorm Life Average dorms. Enough said.
Academic Rigor Students are pushed to their limits with projects, papers, and research opportunities. In the classroom, discussions are expected and encouraged. Questions and comments are always accepted.
Tips for prospective students Apply early, and apply to scholarships for incoming freshmen. Even if UMBC is your back-up school, do not shirk your chances at financial aid.
In three sentences UMBC has many opportunities for the prospective students. Professors enrich and interact with students regularly to further their academic careers. Besides classes, the job opportunities and social life at UMBC can also offer life long friendships and relationships that are essential to life after college.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is no fear on this campus. It is safe and quiet all the time.
Greek Life Greek is not a huge deal here. We have fraternities and sororities. Our sororities do not have houses however, and the whole thing is very quiet.
Clubs and Activities You can always find a group to join.
Great for these types of students This is a geek campus! We have one of the top ranked chess teams, along with Baja and robotics competitions. We are a home for the scholarly.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus We don't have a foot ball team so we all follow NFL Ravens. We are really into it and have ravens parties in the Sports Zone.
Bang for the buck I am getting my moneys worth.
What to do for fun There is plenty to do for fun here. From a smoothie day at Fat Tuesdays to a sponsored bus trip to New York or Philidelphia you can always find something fun to do.
Food and Dining We have 1 dining hall that is an all-you-can-eat. The food is great and I really like it. We also have the commons and university centers which have other fast food or resturant options.
Dorm Life Dorms can be hit or miss. They are all very welcoming and the housing is good, but you have to be willing to trade some storage space for the atmosphere.
Academic Rigor This is an honors college you need to be on top of it to really do well.
Tips for prospective students Get the bus system figured out. It is the best way to get around. Remember that lie extends beyond the campus and you should get out every once and a while.
In three sentences UMBC is a fantastic school. The student support and general positive atmosphere really make you feel at home. The classes are taught well and the extra learning options are really well organized and very helpful.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Very academically inclined, interested in STEM
Bang for the buck UMBC is an amazing school for the tuition it takes! It is about $10,000/year for in-state students, which is nothing compared to the quality of education UMBC offers.
What to do for fun There are a number of extracurricular activities students can be a part of. Asking around and visiting the UMBC website are good ways to get involved!
Food and Dining It is really convenient to get food on campus, and there are a lot of options for all types of eaters. There are vegetarian options, healthy options, quick options, etc. The one down side is that the food teds to be very expensive.
Dorm Life Although I live off campus, I have heard that dorm life really fun. UMBC doesn't have the party school reputation like several other colleges, but living on campus in a terrific way to get to know people, build a support system, and make connections that can help you get ahead both academically and socially.
Academic Rigor Since UMBC is a school focused mainly on advancing in the STEM fields, it helps if you come in with a strong background in the sciences. Professors are ready to assist anyone needing help as long as you ask and there are many on campus resources to help students as well. Constant studying is a common language for students at UMBC, so absolutely commit to your studies and make it your number one priority!
Tips for prospective students It always helps to do your research bout the university before applying and definitely before attending. Keep an open mind and don't be afraid to take initiative as soon as you join the school!
In three sentences University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) is a wonderful institution that is a perfect place for students of any interest, especially those interested pursuing the natural and physical sciences. It's a small campus and very easy to find your way around quickly. The students and professors are very friendly and always willing to help to make a new student feel accepted.

Great for these types of students Great for science-oriented students!
What to do for fun There are always on-campus activities to do. They also always have a movie showing each week.
Food and Dining There are pretty good choices in dining. There are food places in the Commons as well as a buffet style eating area.
Dorm Life I'm a commuter so I'm not the best authority here. I hear from friends that dorm life is mostly satisfying.
Academic Rigor The rigor of the classes depends on what you take. The sciences are pretty intensive.
Tips for prospective students Start off school strongly and you will be successful.
In three sentences This is a great university for serious college students. You will meet amazing teachers and students and have a blast. Only consider this school if you are serious about your education.

Categories Comments What to do for fun There's always something going on around campus. Weekly movies, club meets, open mic nights, trips to NY, you name it.
Food and Dining There's variety on campus. The food isn't always the best, but it's college food. I'm just glad they have a Starbucks on campus. There's also a Chick-Fil-A if you're into that sort of thing. As far as the dining hall goes, I love that it's buffet style, but the taste of the food is a hit or miss type situation.
Dorm Life I wouldn't exactly know about dorm life because I commute (UMBC is a big commuter school), but my dorming friends don't seem to have that many problems with it.
Academic Rigor The workload isn't too bad, but a combination of procrastination and over estimating will leave you busier than you've ever been. Freshman year, play it safe and take 13 to 15 credits the first semester unless you think you can handle more.
Tips for prospective students It's not as scary as you think. You don't get like a billion research papers all due in a week and a professor won't laugh you out of the classroom for asking questions, but you do have to step it up a notch. The work will get harder and overwhelming if you're not careful
In three sentences It's simple a good school. The professors I've had so far are pretty cool people and most of them are always willing to help if you make appointments. It makes college stereotypes disappear.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students STEM and visual art majors.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are major parking issues because it is a commuter school. There are only limited places commuters can park so make sure to arrive early!
Bang for the buck Too expensive for the reputation. Plus a ton of extra fees are applied for things like the gym that are in disrepair and never used.
What to do for fun I don't know. Most people study.
Dorm Life I don't know. I am a commuter.
Academic Rigor Because the classes are so huge, it is really up to you to be motivated, learn, and do well. The classes are hard and tons of work but it is not impossible.
Tips for prospective students Stay ahead of the game- read ahead and start studying waaay in advance.
In three sentences On a scale of 1-10 UMBC would get a 7. There are many great professors and the classes are generally organized well and interesting; the chemistry and visual arts dept.s in particular are very strong. However the bio dept. tends to be more focused on research than teaching and there is little to no social life at umbc. The classes are huge and there is little individual attention. This school is for the serious, ambitious STEM major.

Food and Dining Campus is full of awesome food places and they even give out free food for all kinds of activities and fairs.
Dorm Life I don't dorm i'm a commuter but I hear dorm life is pretty fun.
Academic Rigor The classes are hard but rewarding and in the end you'll come out a better student and person for persevering.
Tips for prospective students Look for a campus you feel comfortable being almost all the time and not just the school all your friends have chosen.
In three sentences If I had to give UMBC a grade it would be an A. The campus is so diverse and full of activities even for commuter students. It is one of the best colleges in Maryland.

Categories Comments Campus Safety I am a girl who is 5 foot 4 inches and 110 lb. I feel relatively safe walking around campus at night. However, I don't recommend it. This semester I will be working at the desk in a different residence hall from my own. There will be times when I have to walk back to my dorm very early or very late. There are blue lights on campus, and the halls are close together. Im not uncomfortable with it, but if you are, someone will walk with you, whether a friend or campus police.
Greek Life The frats and sororities that have houses have them off campus, in Arbutus mostly. Nearly everyone can find a group that they want to fit in with. It just depends on whether or not they want you and if you want to devote your time and money.
Clubs and Activities There are many clubs and activities available. Finding the time in your busy schedule will be the problem. First semester will be overwhelming. Everyone ants you to get involved, but you don't need to overload yourself. Everyone on campus puts academics first, even the frat boys.
Great for these types of students Anyone who is looking to focus on their education and get serious is a good fit for UMBC. You will have fun, but if you are not willing to buckle down during the semester, finals week is going to be a terrible experience, take it from every single second semester freshman at UMBC.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus True Grit, the school's retriever mascot, has a statue outside of the RAC. People rub his nose on their way into the RAC for basketball games and such. The actual mascot has ancestors who are still around. True Grit used to attend the outdoor sporting events.
Bang for the buck UMBC offers an excellent education for a relatively low state tuition. In the honors college, you can receive and Ivy league quality education.
What to do for fun SEB (Student Events Board) puts together events for students year around: homecoming in the fall, quadmania in the spring, along with a variety of fun filled events throughout the year including comedians and concerts. There is a state park nearby, Patapsco State Park. The Baltimore Inner Harbor is 20 minutes away. There are a few parties every weekend or so on or near campus, but you don't have to be under the influence to have a good time at UMBC. No one forces it.
Food and Dining The food is reasonably good. There are many options for those with special dietary considerations. The Commons offers salsaritas, famiglia, Chinese food, vegetarian fair, mondo's subs,
Dorm Life The people you live with will probably be fairly similar to you, and much more similar than those you went to high school with if you are in the right place.
Academic Rigor Whether you are ready or not, professors will push you, especially in the prerequisite courses. If you are willing to work hard there is help available such as tutoring center, TA and professor office hours, and library resources.
Tips for prospective students Be open to new experiences when you come. If you come in with an open mind you will find success, but it will not come easily. During your first semester, you will learn new strengths and weaknesses about yourself. Everything will not go as planned, but if you are open to the changes you should make it through just fine.
In three sentences Its a great school for those looking to find a diverse environment. You will never find anyone who is exactly like yourself but you will be able relate to many. Professors and peers are excited to facilitate innovative thinking and creativity.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very safe! You need an ID card to get into any building. There are many emergency call stations all over the campus.
Clubs and Activities If you are looking for a club, there are so many to choose from it's hard to narrow the list down to just a few. You name it, there is probably a club for it!
Great for these types of students Any student will find UMBC a great fit. There are many International students and teachers.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There is a statue of the mascot - a retriever. You rub it's nose for good luck :)
Bang for the buck UMBC is a great school for the money. I spent my Freshman year at a private college, but transferred to UMBC. UMBC has a better academic selection than any other school I have researched or attended. The people and atmosphere are great!
What to do for fun There are tons of clubs on campus. They have trips to a large mall where you can go shopping or see a movie. They also have several activities throughout the year.
Food and Dining True Grits has a great assortment of food. There is also a Starbucks, Chick-Fillet, and other brand-name places right on campus. You are sure to find something to your liking!
Dorm Life Everyone in the dorms are great! There is comradery and everyone is really nice. Security at the dorms makes you feel safe and comfortable. The rooms are nice size - which is great!
Academic Rigor I would give this a 4+ star rating. The academics are not overwelming, but this is not a vacation spot either. The school is top notch and if you apply yourself it will be worth it!
Tips for prospective students The campus is great. A very diverse group of students and teachers. If you have a special interest, there is probably a club for it.

Categories Comments Campus Safety It is very safe, and nothing much happens in the campus.
Great for these types of students If you do not own a car, then learn the bus routes. Take the bus 35 to go to Inner Harbor.
Food and Dining Food is not the best at UMBC, and often you will travel outside of the campus for the food. Of course, night meals at the common is good, but over all it is bit disappointing.
Dorm Life If you are not into party, than it is great dorm life for you here at UMBC. It is quite and allows the students to be focus on their work. The dorms are nice, as long as you are able to get newer building.
Academic Rigor Difficulty of the classes at UMBC are depended on the professors as some are easy and some are difficult. If you are lucky, you will manage to have easy professors, but if not you will have hard time getting through the class. But, most of the professors want you to do well on the class, so they will try their best to help the students to understand the materials.

Categories Comments Bang for the buck If you dorm at UMBC, the total (housing and tuition) cost is just about or even more than UMD's tuition and housing.
Food and Dining Great food options that change daily unlike UMD. The attitude of some of the employees could improve though. There is a dinning hall (True Grit) that is buffet style.
Dorm Life Great dorms compared to other universities but very costly. Each dorm building will have social events to try and get the residents to miggle together. IE: Gaming tournaments or a movie night.
Academic Rigor It is very competitive at UMBC. Make sure you don't slack off. Seek help early if you are struggling. The professors can help you and can see if that you are trying even if you are not doing too well.
Tips for prospective students Participate in social events at the school, they often offer a lot of things there and most of it is free or almost free. Make sure you know what you are doing, the general engineering advisors (for freshmen/sophomore) was really unhelpful to me. Also be proactive about school work. There are helpful tutors offered at the school's library or you can ask a teacher's assistant (you usually have them in science-based courses) if you are shy.
In three sentences Overall, a decent a school with that has a bit of everything. The liberal arts school is heavily focused on the science/tech./engineering students.

Greek Life Couple of greek orgs but too many. Not many students are into greek life but if you are their may be what your looking for
Clubs and Activities Lots of different organizations and they lay them out for you one day during the semester so you can pick what you like
Great for these types of students Quiet, Focused, plan to go on past undergrad
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus New so dont know of too many yet
Bang for the buck Not too expensive for the good edu you will recieve
What to do for fun Lots of different organizations, inner harbor etc.
Food and Dining Not too many healthy or just in overall options, but you'll make it through.
Dorm Life The organization called residential life will plan good activities if you just like to have fun once a while. The dorms are quiet and kept.
Academic Rigor It is a very rigourous curriculum in some majors but you can be successful due to the good professors, advisers and help areas. The academics here will set you up for the future well.
Tips for prospective students - Get your GPA to around a 3.2 - Get around a 1700 on your SAT - Participate in some extracurricular - Knock that essay out of the park
In three sentences I really enjoy being a UMBC. The potenial for success is great. It is quiet and their is a lot of opportunity for assistance.

Categories Comments Campus Safety There is a police station at the edge of campus and cops patrol the area. There are blue emergency posts if you get scared or attacked. Campus police will escort you back to your car or dorm at night if you call the non-emergency number.
Greek Life There are sororities and frats for all types of people. There are the traditional panhellenic ones and minority-interest ones.
Clubs and Activities Every semester, SEB (Student Events Board) host Involvement Fest where clubs, Frats, and Sororities lay out tables for you to sign up if interested. There are lots of on campus job or research opportunities.
Great for these types of students People focused on studies.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Skylight lounge is a lesser known place to eat. It is usually used by professors and commuters. It has all you can eat. like Dining Hall, but can be higher quality food.
Bang for the buck I like the friends I've made here. The tuition is reasonable, especially for in-state students.
What to do for fun Unless you have a car, there isn't much to do. UMBC Transit offers buses that go around the Baltimore area. You can join clubs or hang out in a friend's dorm. On weekends, a lot of people go home so campus gets extra boring. Parties are rare (unless you throw them or have connections) and quickly shut down.
Food and Dining There are different options for dining- The Commons and True Grit (the dining hall). On weekends, only dining hall and a burrito place is open. There are two stores (Outtakes and The Yum Shoppe) for if you don't want to use a meal but want food for later. There are also restaurants in the area.
Dorm Life I live on the Humanities LLC (Living Learning Community floor). LLCs are good to get to know people who share similar interests. The different residential halls are fairly close so it isn't hard to walk if you have friends in other halls.
Academic Rigor UMBC prides itself on being an up and coming school. If you manage your time well, you shouldn't have too much trouble keeping up with work.
Tips for prospective students Balance academic ad social life. Don't be afraid to ask your professors or TA for help- that's what they are there for. Get involved on campus!
In three sentences It is not a party school. It is a fairly small campus near Baltimore attractions. It is for students that are career focused.

Food and Dining I visit friends here almost once a week and definitely the worst part is the food.

Categories Comments Campus Safety UMBC is a very safe campus, especially compared to other MD schools. I've been able to walk around nearly empty buildings very late at night and there have been no threats to me. There is also a system of blue lampposts on campus that have emergency buttons that you can press if you feel you are in danger.
Greek Life From what I've heard, Greek Life is a bit more than just partying and getting drunk at UMBC. There is one particular fraternity that gives you tons of connections, from SGA to being an ambassador for Google. Being part of Greek life gives you connections, which is the major thing in my opinion (and of course a little partying here and there).
Great for these types of students If you're interested in STEM, you're definitely in the right place. The same goes for if you like a sense of community and enjoy an atmosphere that's not cut-throat. But in truth, everyone can find their place at this school no matter what your major is or what background you're from.
What to do for fun During the fall semester of 2012, I went to many cultural events on Friday nights (such as Caribbean Night and a Hispanic-Latino night). It's easy to get tickets for these events and then just get a group of your friends and have fun. There are also Open Mic nights on Thursdays and a Breakfast and Bingo event almost every Saturday evening. That just barely scratches the surface of all the countless things that you can do at UMBC during the week. If you want to know more, you're just gonna have to come and see for yourself!
Food and Dining There are many options of where to eat at UMBC including the dining hall, the Commons (which has fast food type places), the University Center (which has Chik-fil-A and Starbucks), and the Administration building. The dining hall has vegan/vegetarian options as well as a salad bar and desserts. The way that meals and meal plans work is pretty fair for the most part.
Dorm Life The dorm I live in now, Susquehanna, has a very strong community vibe with the RAs (Resident Assistants) and the CD (Community Director) always getting the residents involved. For the most part, people are very welcoming and don't mind having people walk in their room when the door's open.
Academic Rigor All the STEM classes I've taken so far have been challenging but also very open to giving help. They've all been fair but at the same time, it's a challenge and really makes me think critically in different ways. Even if you don't take STEM classes, the rigor should still be high and rewarding.
Tips for prospective students Get used to studying and doing homework in groups, as UMBC is built on community and interdependence. Be on the lookout for internships and research opportunities with the Shriver Center, it'll help launch your career in the future
In three sentences UMBC is full of innovation, creativity, and strong leadership. With the BWTech Research Park close by, new and inspiring ideas come out of UMBC all the time. Also, the president, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, is a very influential man and has pushed UMBC forward to new places.

Clubs and Activities Greek Life, Student Events Board.. lots more. there is Involvement fest every semester to talk with clubs that interest you.
Great for these types of students I've noticed there are a lot of Info Systems majors but there is a good mix. you either have to be outgoing and join clubs and meet people or stay with a small group of friends, bored.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Try getting on the roof of Ac 1V
What to do for fun hang out with people, go into Baltimore, video games, w/e you usually do. There is a game room in the Commons and one in Chesapeake Hall.
Food and Dining Dining hall is alright. They have themed days to spice it up a bit where the food will be from a certain area of the world. There is also a sub place, burrito place, salad bar, Chick-fil-a, Starbucks, sushi/ Chinese food place all on campus. Off campus, you have sooo many options around Baltimore.
Dorm Life I love my dorm (for the most part). Harbor and Erickson hall are the two nicest dorms on campus. I live in a Living Learning Community in Harbor and get along with lots of people on my floor. Each Dorm has it's reputation so it depends on which you get.
Academic Rigor Some classes are harder than others. It's no Harvard but expect lots of reading. Of course, the rigor depends on the level and content of the class.
Tips for prospective students College is as fun as you make it. Get involved on campus. Don't get behind on assignments. Ask teachers if you are confused or struggling.
In three sentences It has a fairly small campus and most of the professors care about our education. It is NOT a party school; they are hard to come by. There are lots of helpful services.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Campus safety is fantastic. I can walk from the RLC (The 24-hour study room in the library) at 2am and arrive safely to my dorm.
Greek Life I don't know much about the Greek life. I always see them in the breeze way fund raising. We have 4 of the divine 9, but we also have a Jewish Frat, a christian Frat/Sorority. There is always some diversity to be found at UMBC.
Clubs and Activities Their clubs are great, we have over 200 clubs, but I will say during free hour it is really hard to find which clubs to go to because EVERY CLUB schedules their meetings during free hour.
Great for these types of students I say if you are academically driven mostly then UMBC is for you. If you're not going to do the work and laze around than UMBC is not for you.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Um. Petting True Grit (The dog in front of the RAC) before a test is a tradition. I did it once and passed a test that I thought I failed!
Bang for the buck For the education a person gets at this school in-state tuition is excellent, also this school is a great commuter school. So if you have to work after or before class this school is prefect!
What to do for fun Hm. For Fun you could go to the mall on the weekends or a lot of clubs meet on the weekend. I keep mentioning weekends because half the school goes home on the weekends. The school is such a huge commuter school. Um a lot of clubs meet on the weekday also, there are 200+ clubs. We have something called Free hour which is a Free hour Monday,Wednesdays and Fridays. It is from 12-1, a lot of clubs meet during that time, its cool but kinda sucks because ALL clubs think the same and schedule there meetings during the same time . So don't take on too much. UMBC is not a party school at all, if you are looking for a party school than college park might be a better fit
Food and Dining True Grits is decent, it is the main dining hall the food is the best during Welcome Week so make sure to eat there during that week. Also if someone says 'D-Hall' they are referring to True Grits. Sometimes the food at True Grits doesn't go together or is not good at all. Luckily the pasta/pizza station does not change so it is a good default. There are places to eat outside of True Grits, such as Jow-Jing (asian food), Salsaritas (mexican food), The Grill (Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, etc...), Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks....there are more food places but the important part is to know that the ones outside of True Grits close at 6pm and are not open on weekends except Salsaritas( stays open everyday later than True Grits). True Grits also has something called Late Night which starts and ends at 2 am Sunday-Thursday, they have pretty good food at late night. Also Flex dollars, okay this had to be explained to me like 35345364674547 times but heres the explanation if you get food and it goes over the price of a meal (conversion is $5.50) then the remainder of the cost goes into your flex dollars. The Flex dollars will creep up on you, I ran out of Flex the middle of the semester and regretted it during finals when I was up late studying and wanted food, but couldn't spare a meal. Be careful!
Dorm Life The dorms are really nice, but they can be expensive. Like most colleges certain dorms are better than others, but you have to cope with whatever you get. Erickson and Harbor are the upper classman dorms and they are the best, however they can be very expensive. The Walker Apartments are the best though!
Academic Rigor I am a current student at UMBC and I can stay I stress over grades. UMBC is really hard, but rewarding, The stress is worth it as long as you do well and try your best you will be good. Work hard and don't get involved in the drama of UMBC
Tips for prospective students UMBC is hard, but the payoff is great! The fact of the matter is this is a FANTASTIC education. As long as you stay on top of your classes it will be fine.
In three sentences UMBC is a very good school, academically, this school will kick your butt if you are not organized however. Organization is key, I cannot stress that enough, organization can be the difference between a passing student and a failing student. This school is hard, but when you pass the class with an 'A' a since of accomplishment is felt.

Categories Comments Clubs and Activities Breakdance club is really fun!!
What to do for fun Joining clubs is definitely fun. School events such as weekly movie night and bus trips are pretty fun.
Food and Dining The choice of food is very limited and expensive.
Dorm Life Some dorms are really fancy, but somes are just ok. Ex. Harbor and Erickson are design to have a living room connected between two rooms. People get crazy on weekends, but most of time they are fine.
Academic Rigor No one really cares what you're doing as long as you keep your GPA good enough.
Tips for prospective students It is easy to make friends. However, UMBC really isn't a party school..
In three sentences It's a nice school with good professors, and people are generally friendly. Transportation is a little bit inconvenient, but not if you have a car.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Mostly, I hang out with my friends for fun and participate in events on campus. There are movie nights in one of the larger lecture halls, during which they air films that came out recently, and there are open-mic nights every Thursday in the Sports Zone!
Food and Dining The food on campus is okay, there's nothing special about any of it. The dining hall is decent, and it where I go when I want to make sure I am getting all my vegetables! The Commons has a larger variety with mini restaurants like Salsarita's, Mondo's Subs, a salad bar, etc...
Dorm Life To me, the dorm life on this campus is pretty ideal! I've enjoyed living on campus mainly because it is quiet and less stressful than commuting would be. The party scene is definitely less active on this campus than on other campuses, so for people looking for that atmosphere, I would say its not the right fit for you.
Academic Rigor I think academic rigor at UMBC depends on your major. UMBC is a research and an honors university that focuses a great amount on math and sciences. I think UMBC expects quality work from their students rather than quantity.
Tips for prospective students Make sure you get involved! A good portion of the students who attend UMBC are commuters, so the campus isn't very lively on the weekends. There are always events to attend, but you have to make an effort to find them; they won't be shoved in your face. Get involved in a few organizations (there are quite a few here!) and think about getting an on campus job if you have the time (there are many opportunities for student employment here.) Also, use your resources. The faculty and staff have done a great of putting together several resources for incoming and current students at UMBC.
In three sentences My experience at UMBC for the past two years has been wonderful! I've enjoyed the diversity within the student population as well as the challenge in the academics. The professors are well-selected and are well-versed in their content areas.

Categories Comments Campus Safety You will not walk around campus without seeing UMBC police somewhere. In addition to campus police, the county police station is located directly next to campus as well. There is no threatening feel about the campus. As long as a student takes normal precaution as they would in any public place, there is no need to worry about safety.
Greek Life There are several sororities and fraternities on campus. Each one is unique in their own way, but they all act like a family when together. If you love to meet people and love social interaction, UMBC's greek life is definitely the way to go. They are constantly raising money for charitable causes, and having fun while doing it.
Clubs and Activities So so many to choose from. Club or intramural sports, dance clubs, a capella groups, tae kwon do-- you name it, we have it. And if we don't have it, you can start it.
Great for these types of students UMBC is one of the most diverse schools in the country when it comes to race and culture. We have students from a variety of locations in the U.S. as well as several international students. This school is a place where anyone could fit in.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus During you're time at UMBC, you will probably get a chance to have a one on one conversation with the amazing president, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski. Every spring we have Quadmania, that features a concert with a famous band or musician and a carnival, hosted on our very own campus.
Bang for the buck UMBC is definitely the bargain school in Maryland. I'm talking quality education for your money, and definitely a school that is looked highly on by employers.
What to do for fun There are movies every weekend in a lecture hall which transforms into a movie theater. And there are always events going on on campus. If you're not doing school work, there is always something going on whether it be a sporting event, Students Event Board event, or a club sponsored event. There are a wide variety of clubs you can join to keep busy!
Food and Dining The food is tasty for a college campus. There are plenty of venues to choose from including the dining hall, Chick-Fil-A, Starbuck's, Au Bon Pain, Wild Greens salad bar, Jow Jing Chinese Cousine, Salsarita's Mexican Cousine, and more.
Dorm Life The dorms are spacey and pretty close to everything. Can't complain.
Academic Rigor Very tough school, but you will come out that much smarter and on top. The hard work definitely pays off.
Tips for prospective students My suggestion for incoming students is to get to know people- your professors, TA's, and other students. Also get familiar with the resources on campus- there is a resource for just about anything you'd need help with. At UMBC you're never alone, which is a satisfying reminder.
In three sentences This school is very challenging in order to make students the best they can be. The professors, for the most part, are attentive and want you to do well. There are so many resources to help you succeed, I wouldn't want to go anywhere else.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Patrolled by Maryland State police, it has been voted one of the safest College campuses on the east coast.
Greek Life not as large as most colleges. Offers a couple frats and sororities for students who are set on belonging.
Clubs and Activities There is a club for every possible major/minor, hobby, affiliation and association you can think of. There is ALWAYS something going on for students to get involved with.
Great for these types of students Science students/Math/Psychology and History students.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus The Library is great location on campus with views of Baltimore city. Academic row was designed in the 60s and offers some great works of architecture from that time period with an incredible Performing Arts building that's set to be completed in the Fall of 2013.
Bang for the buck Tuition is very affordable (around $10,000) especially for one of the top colleges in the country right now. You will not only emerge from UMBC with more knowledge in your field than almost any other school, but you will also build connections that stick and will help you be successful in your career and grad school.
What to do for fun The UMBC Commons is a great place to hangout. Comfortable furniture with ample space, plenty of restaurants and gaming rooms. The Game room has a pool hall, Ping-Pong tables and Xbox360 connectivity with Big-screen game nights and many activities throughout the week. The commons also has a great bar and a sports center.
Food and Dining From the Yum Shoppe to True Grits, the dining offers a varied selection of good foods and snacks. Food plans are easily obtained through the college and hours of operation are very convenient for students regardless of class times.
Dorm Life Dorms are nicely equipped, especially in Erickson Hall. Clean and spacious with students who are more focused on learning than anything else. Great dorms for incoming freshmen
Academic Rigor The classes are very well structured. The texts are appropriately assigned and the homework, though ample, is not too much where it would make you lose interest in the course. Effective class use and passionate professors make even the dullest class come to life.
Tips for prospective students Apply for the Honors College! It has many benefits and programs that help you earn and honorable degree and will help you be the most hirable over anyone else in your field of study.
In three sentences A fantastic student-oriented university determined on helping their students succeed. UMBC has an incredible academic track record. Skilled and passionate professors makes for a learning experience that truly prepares you for your career.

What to do for fun Fishbowl on Thursday nights at the Fish Head Cantina. Baltimore
Tips for prospective students Find parking spots early. Visit the RAC during off hours. Try to stay away from campus food.
In three sentences University of Maryland Baltimore County is a small commuter school. If you are looking for a party school, this is not the place to go. However, it is an honors school and their academics are fairly rigorous.

Categories Comments What to do for fun Join a frat or sorority, attend the activities that are set up in the beginning and end of the year like big crazy fun night or quadmania.
Food and Dining Campus food will not always meet your expectations but the dining hall was pretty good.
Dorm Life Dorming was very exciting and the people on my floor were very sociable. Meet the right people and you'll have a great year.
Academic Rigor Science classes are hard but as long as you study and do well on exams you will be fine.
Tips for prospective students Even though the campus is small there are other ways to get out into the community.
In three sentences This university is a small community but it allows students to make close friendships with their peers. This university allows students to make close relationships with the staff. This university helps students grow in academic ways as well as social.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Very safe. Barely anything happens on campus. If there is any activity, it is usually dealt with immediately.
Greek Life Not a large presence but there is Greek Life for those who wish to join.
Clubs and Activities We have over 100 clubs and teams. If there aren't any that strike your interests, you can create one of your own.
Great for these types of students Students who are open to meeting students that are different from their ethnic background
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are so many study locations and I enjoy sitting outside to study.
Bang for the buck Definitely worth it for Maryland residents because of state tuition. Much newer campus compared to the other public Maryland institutions. There is a lot of new construction going on (recently: arts building). Many scholarship programs (arts, humanities, policy, Meyerhoff Program for the sciences)
What to do for fun Shuttles to: town of Arbutus, Catonsville, Halethorpe, Arundel Mall Shuttles that can link you to the Metro DC area - culture nights on campus a few times a month - movie theater on campus - game room (pool and ping pong in the commons) - Student Events Board sponsored events (cheap tickets to Quad Mania - this year's was Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, DC Zoo, Orioles Games, Hershey Park, NYC, Philly, King's Dominion)
Food and Dining We have an all you can eat dining buffet that has different types of food each night (also have the typical foods: sandwich station, pasta and pizza, salads, bread/cereal breakfast pantry). I really enjoy the theme nights but I prefer to go to the commons (food court style- salad, vegetarian, salad, familigia, chinese, outtakes convenience store, mondos sandwich, grill). We also have a Starbucks and Chick-Fil-A on campus and a Subway's on our BW Tech company campus which is about a 5-10 minute walk from the main circle. I also really like the Admin Coffee Shop (great breakfast and lunch sandwiches and wraps).
Dorm Life Great dorm life. The newer dorms are really clean, modern and and spacious. Some dorms are older than others and choosing dorms are based on student credit levels. Some older dorms are currently under construction.
Academic Rigor I'm not as familiar with the arts than I am with the sciences (especially biochemistry and engineering), but the courses are intense. The intro courses may be a bit repetitive from high school especially for those who have taken AP courses but I recommend it as a time for students to really develop their study habits and create a schedule they will stick to once the new (and more difficult material) comes along.
Tips for prospective students - Use your resources: sign up for a weekly tutorial session for chemistry, go to professor office hours, take advantage of UMBC works (the online internship/co-op/job database) - Meet as many students as you can during Welcome Week. Do not hang out with people from your school only, and go out of your comfort zone. - The Student Events Board plans many activities each month (on campus weekly movies, crafts, trips to DC and amusement parks, etc) - If you are a Maryland resident, I definitely advise staying on campus on weekends and spending time with fellow classmates and attending school events
In three sentences This is one of the most diverse and academically rigorous university campuses in the US and voted one of the top up and coming schools for the past several years. The goal of the school is to make sure that each and every student graduates, which is aided by tutorial services, student involvement fairs, career fairs, and more. There are so many research opportunities open to undergraduates to pursue research early on in their career.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have our own police force, and blue emergency light system. There is also only one road through the campus, which means there is only one way in and one way out. Not much room to get away.
What to do for fun Clubs, teams, organized events, concerts, shows, theatre, you name it, UMBC has it.
Food and Dining The food is phenomenal and there are so many places to eat! They accommodate everyone's food choices whether you have allergies, are vegan, vegetarian, kosher, or anything else, they have plenty of choices for you.
Dorm Life The rooms are some of the biggest dorm rooms I have seen, and they are being renovated and getting all new furniture. The residential staff is committed to making dorm life as great as it can be. The best part, in my opinion, is no community bathrooms. It is one bathroom per every two rooms. That means 4 people to a bathroom instead of 50 people to a gym locker room style bathroom.
Academic Rigor The classes are challenging- this is an Honors College- but the professors are there to help you and really want to get to know you to help you succeed in any possible way.
Tips for prospective students There are so many options, do not feel rushed or pressured to make any decisions too quickly. Ask any and all questions- everyone is willing and happy to answer your questions.
In three sentences I recently went for Orientation and I all of my nervousness and anxiety went away. Everyone is extremely dedication and willing to help in any way, shape, or form. I cannot wait to start my college experience here.
