    Great for these types of students

    Self-starters, students who are going to college to actually learn (not party), independent workers, and hard workers. Online college is nothing like the commercials try to paint them as; it is a lot of work and students need to take the work seriously in order to do well.
    Tips for prospective students

    Taking classes online, in my opinion, is actually more difficult than going to an actual lecture, but you can get so much more out of it! Online classes need students who aren't tempted by cheating and who won't shy away from a lot of work and finding the answers on their own (no one is there to hold your hand). Make sure you get to know your advisor really well, especially if you are taking classes online, because when you are not immersed in a college atmosphere, you may feel overwhelmed when making decisions regarding your major... This means phone calls and emails to your Undergrad/Grad advisor and asking questions.
    Bang for the buck

    WOW, you get so much bang for your buck! I'm learning more than my friends who went to a local community college, but for less money! The price, generally for 12 credits, per semester is just over $3,000, and including books it is usually under $4,000. I have the option to take my classes online or at any of the associated University of Maryland locations... Meaning, if I signed up for a Biology class, I could take the course at College Park -- but not have to pay the big bucks! AMAZING.

    I am taking all of my classes online because of medical issues, and going to UMUC enables me to get my degree even while I'm sick. The teachers are amazing and are very helpful and involved in your studies, and the courses are so much fun and interesting (but definitely not a walk in the park)! I'm even more excited for the next semester at UMUC because they have changed their final exam policies to prepare you for real world situations. Now, you have final papers/projects that will summarize your course, or you may have a final exam online which you can take from the comfort of your own home. I truly enjoy taking my classes at UMUC!
    Am learning a lot

    Coming from an online high school, I knew that taking classes online was no vacation. So far I've taken 9 courses at UMUC, and all of them have challenged me. The courses are interesting and the online component adds a unique discussion -- it's not your typical college discussion, as the students range in age from 18 to 40+, from soldiers to stay at home moms, from California to Iraq. The discussion boards are the main aspect of the classes and allows you to work with your fellow classmates (who may be virtually on the other side of the world from you) and collaborate ideas and opinions. If you actually do the work and are active in the discussion boards, you should be able to learn the material very well. What you take from your classes is determined by what you put into it. I can say that I've worked my butt off for the first year and I got straight A's.

    Great school, but it will hammer you if you are a student that studies poorly or is looking for a fast degree.
    Bang for the buck

    The cost of a UMUC education is quite reasonable. Also, UMUC has an abundance of ways to help gain financial aid through scholarships, grants, and loans.
    Did enjoy being here

    The course format was great in that I took both online and face-to-face courses. Every class fit in my internship at FDIC. The teachers were hit & miss because most participated in discussions while others waited weeks later.
    Did learn a lot

    The learning experience at UMUC was wonderful, and my major was in Bachelor's in Computer Information Technology. The teams I was on during group projects were great. It helped me to learn teamwork, and meet deadlines.

    Great for students who want to pursue degrees in any field. Military to Teaching, Businees to Politics, Cyber Security to Electrical Engineering, Science to Art. You name it, they have it.

    Definitely bang for the buck. I currently pay out of state tuition, but do not mind because the programs that University of Maryland - Univeristy College offers are hardly found with the same quality anywhere else.

    Near Adelphi there a lot of nice towns to go shopping and beautiful historical parts. There are also plenty of beautiful parks and trails to go walking, jogging or bike riding. Also close to the east coast, students can enjoy the sea side.

    Professors are very helpful and the cooperative attitude of WebTycho, the online server the school uses for online degrees, gives students perspectives from both professors and classmates. So when the student enters the work force they have scenarios from all over the board.

    Most students with University of Maryland - Univeristy College take advantage of its online degree programs. Pursuing a degree online, like myself, a student must be willing to chase after what they want. Work is much harder and getting errands done is more on the responsibility of the student. Also make sure different contact information for advising, financial aid and administration is all correct and be prepared to have regular contact with university staff.

    The classes are how you make them. The classes are eight weeks long so everything that is normally in a semester from August to December is crammed, so you really have to be focused. The professors are very eager to help. Because we are not in a classroom setting, our basic way of communication is thru weekly conferences. Make sure you reply to whatever topic it is for the week. When the professor responds, respond back to him or her. You will receive assistance from an adviser, that will tell you what path you should take with what ever major you have.
    Tips for prospective students

    Being that this is an online school, you have to be very focus and disciplined. Your school week starts on Monday and end the next Sunday at midnight. Try and schedule your classes early so you will make sure it does not get full. If you are not one for all online, they do have classroom and hybrid classes as well, which is basically you go to class one day out of the week and the rest of the week is online.

    If you want to do online classes, UMUC is the perfect school. The staff was friendly from day one, when I need assistance I call or go to the office and they were willing and able to resolve whatever issue I may have. Your online Professor is also with you every step of the way.

    Stay on top of the Web tycho system, plan plenty of time for getting to know the system.

    The classes to short, the advisers don't care, the system is flawed, the departments cant not communicate via a database system so you get the run around often. The advisor (s) were all apathetic and not interested.

    There are many help boxes available. There are always campus police patrolling the area. There are other services available for your safety as well.

    If you are young and live on campus you will enjoy your experience. There are many ways to make new friends on campus. Involvement is encouraged at the UMD.

    They have a bowling alley, pool hall, and arcade area in main student building. There are on and off campus activities. There is a big focus on school life.

    They have a lot of options for eating on campus. There are many fast-food stores in main eating area as well as a coop. You can find a coffee shop in most buildings.

    Take as many college courses available to you while still at high school. If you plan on pursuing math take as many math classes available at high school. Apply for scholarships early as possible.

    Signing up for text alerts on the cell phone is highly advised. Depending on the location of classes, some crimes tend to occur. Fortunately most of those crimes are minor and because of the text alerts, one always knows which areas to avoid. Weather alerts can be sent to the phone via text also. This is very helpful and the amount of texts sent is reasonable and not overwhelming.

    There a several academic honors.

    Not many from what I have seen so far. There is a student government. Student involvement is based on the wants of the individual.
    Great for these types of students

    This school is great for a person who has not started a career because it affords a little more extra time to do those scholarship searches, job searches, internship searches, and even a part time job if possible. For a young person who has some family support or lives at home with mom and dad, you do not have to give up those hobbies, such as video games, a sport, or a bulky musical instrument. I reccomend this school for fellow students who recently graduated high school because it is inexpensive, and going to school with people of all ages gives one valuable insight on life, and differing personalities. Most importantly, seeing profesional adults learn is funnier than watching Youtube.

    None that I know of, this has inspired me to put those investigative skill to use and find out.

    What to do for fun

    My suggestion, take up a new activity at a local community center, make some friends at other universities in the Maryland system, and find a good computer game for the little down time you may have in between school work. Most importantly, learn to be able to enjoy alone time.

    Food near the school headquarters in Adelphi is good, assuming you like to sit down. Finding takeout is a bit hard to me. There is always the option of going to the grocery store and cooking in. Or learn of the ancient, inexpensive art of cup ramen.

    One word, nonexistant. Unless you stay at the hotel complex that partners with the school in College Park, MD.
    Academic Rigor

    The toughest part of the academics at UMUC is the speed of the courses. Courses time frame are cut down. It is neccessary to learn the same amount of information as a course at a traditional university in half the time. Even with most coursework being online, this speed is an added incentive to work harder, smarter, and faster.
    Tips for prospective students

    Unless, you are exclusively an online student, I highly suggest you have a vehicle and can drive or live very close to one of the onsite locations such as College of Southern Maryland, University of Maryland College Park, or even Andrew's Airforce Base for all the military veterens.

    UMUC has exceptional customer service and I have never experienced a problem that cannot be solved. The student service center employees are professional, helpful, cheerful, and polite. Everytime I call or get a call from my school, I always hang up the phone with a smile on my face, and a better mood.

    this is excellent bang for the buck. the 1 year mba program costs about $30,000 regardless of maryland residency or not. a top mba program costs about $100,000, and mid level programs cost about $65,000.

    this mba program is more difficult than i anticipated. it is an accelerated program with 11 specific classes. for my first week's assignment, i had to read the first two chapters in the textbook, 8 articles, watch 5 videos, then write a 10 page paper on my findings. it is challenging to say the least, but the professors and classmates are supportive.

    once you narrow down your top 3 colleges, find out some helpful statistics about each one. what are the graduation rates? what are the demographics of this school? will i really fit in here?

    i have not been on campus, but i was at the testing center. i had to show id, sign in, wear a name tag saying i was a student, and there were security in a few different locations. i felt safe.

    umuc is great for students who are parents, they can do their schooling online. also good for people with full time jobs. i think if you want to be fully on your own and not be bound to the school and its class schedules, but would like to be able to go there if extra help is needed this is the place.

    so far the cost of the collage doesn't seem to be too high. i think being a division on university of md, they have fair prices.

    once again i do not live on campus, i do not even live in the same county. i do know there are great college night hot spots in collage park, good food, shopping and sports centers with in a close range.

    i think they should call and speak with an adviser as well as look online. the adviser can walk you through the website and it can defiantly help your understanding of umuc. also ask about the many many programs they have to jump start your degree and get you to where you want to be.

    i am a distance learning student, hence the one star rating. so sorry, i have no input for this section.
    Academic Rigor

    the online classes through this school are pretty intense. i usually spend about 8 to 10 hours a week for each class. the school now offers eight week courses, which has made it more challenging for me to find quality time to study. you can expect to write a paper for each class. sometimes, you will have to collaborate with other students to complete class projects. make sure you pull your own weight or you will frustrate peers.
    Tips for prospective students

    this is for distance learning students. tip one- you will have to engage other students through the school's class portal. professors always assign discussion questions and expect frequent responses to other students' discussions. the minimum response requirements are usually two to three per discussion thread, of course this all depends on the guidelines set forth by the professor. this usually takes quite a bit of time, so plan two to three hours for weekly discussion threads. tip two- it's always a great idea to mark your calendar for assignment deadlines. it can get a little crazy if you are planning to attend classes full time. professors always give out a syllabus at least one week prior before the class begins. i always take advantage of this time to get ahead of my reading assignments.

    being a military spouse and always moving around this school offers various plans without having to change colleges every time we move. although i do wish sometimes that i could take some classes face to face or have the response to a question right that moment it has been pretty good. i would recommend this school to others who are always moving around and can't go to a normal campus school.

    ^I feel I am receiving a high-quality education at UMUC. ^I feel my Bachelor's of Science at UMUC will be well-received at the graduate schools I apply to. ^I greatly value the fact I can have two majors in my degree program at UMUC. ^I have met more professors for my online courses who I feel I can stay in contact with at UMUC compared to University of Phoenix, where it seemed very difficult to get noticed by online professors or stay in contact with them. ^The financial aid office at UMUC is open 24/7 and I have had nothing but pleasant experiences when I've had to call them. ^I would say customer service is better at UMUC's financial aid office than at University of Phoenix's financial aid office. The customer service I received at University of Phoenix's financial aid office was of mixed quality. I was relieved to leave U of P after finishing my AA there because I encountered more than one financial aid-related issue that could have been prevented by my incompetent financial aid advisor at U of P. I also did my best to stay on top of things regarding my financial aid at U of P. However, the U of P financial aid department did not and that was nerve-wracking. I had a name change during my time there and it took the financial department a long time to update my data properly, which caused multiple snafus in their system that delayed the start dates of my courses on more than one occasion. I also feel far more comfortable calling UMUC's financial aid office because I know they will answer any questions I have right on the line whereas Phoenix's financial aid office told me on more than one occasion to talk to my financial aid advisor, which was unhelpful because my financial aid advisor was ALWAYS the one who had instructed me to call the financial aid office in the first place. ^I would recommend UMUC anytime. However, I am not so sure I would recommend U of P.

    ^The academic rigor at UMUC is excellent. The eight-week online courses can be challenging, particularly when you are taking courses that you already expect to be time-consuming (like Finite Math), but eight-week courses are VERY doable if you plan ahead and avoid taking too many courses at once. For example, I do not recommend taking more than four 3-credit classes in a semester if you have a job of any type unless you are an above-average student and have no other commitments. The eight-week online courses go by at an accelerated pace compared to 12-14 week courses and it's important to keep this in mind. Otherwise, I've never had a problem with the eight-week courses.
    Tips for prospective students

    ^Plan ahead when choosing which courses to take each semester. ^Only take as many courses in a semester as you think you can handle. ^If you work full-time, have been out of school for a while, and plan to enroll in a fully online program, start off with 2-3 courses in your first semester and not 4. This will allow you to get used to the eight-week format for the online courses before you take on a full-time workload.

    What does this question mean? See my previous statement about CLEP/DANTES. One exam costs approx $50 to take, but its on you to pass. If you do, its worth 3 semester hours of college credit. Considering a less-expensive school's tuition/class is approx $800, and anywhere from 8 weeks to 12 to complete -- it definately provides great Bang for your Buck.

    I just bought a '66 Mustang -- it keeps me occupied. I have two kids, they keep me busy. I'm in the military working in Special Operations, that keeps me even more busy. I study taekwando, I run to show myself that I'm more in shape now than when I was 18 and because I live in Miami, I visit sporting events when possible.

    The College Park area is full of places to hang out with one's friends. There is a metro station close by with a short ride to many destinations that offer many other city attractions. The school is located in a great centralized area.

    I have had quite a few professors who weren't very challenging, so I challenged them. But I am sure this can be said for any educational institution. Because the semesters were shortened for some of the online courses, we have been forced to learned a lot more information in a much shorter time frame; this can be a daunting task. Stay focused and pressure your professor to give you what you need to succeed - it is why we pay tuition.

    I didn't find the academic advisors to be very helpful and have often found that I would need to contact individuals more than a few times before I received correct information. Basically, do your homework on UMUC's policy and procedures. Keep abreast on what is going on. Overall, the staff is okay, but the more informed you are, the better off you will be.

    It is a diverse college that is great for those fresh from high school or transitioning adults continuing their education while working and/or caring for a family. They have recently changed their course schedules, so it's possible to get more classes in for a full-time working student. However, I was not happy with the increase in tuition.

    I do not know any traditions. But I can tell you the UMUC is great with military! My husband is station in Italy, and they have an amazing office open here helping military attend college! They even support the troops all the way in Afghanistan where my husband is currently doing his degree while serving the country!

    UMUC is very affordable! If it wasn't for there amazing prices, I am not sure if I would be able to pay for college! Also do not forget about all the scholarships UMUC offers straight from their university!

    Get involved! Even if it means, form study groups! I am a military student, so I can't get involved in any clubs or sports. But I have formed study groups and it has been an excellent experience!

    Wish I could say, I eat at the military post. Food and dining is usually great at college campuses! Knowing the UMUC advisors and college, I wouldn't doubt they are top notch there as well!

    I do not know how the dorm life is, for I am an online student at the Europe location. Dorm life is a great experience for college though, I would definitely look into it if I had the opportunity!

    Academics is great, the professors are fantastic. They are always on their feet trying to help you with any problems you may face. Make sure you are ready to learn, the pace is quick with lots of information!

    Stay focused during your classes, for they seem to go quick (7 week sessions). Ask your advisor for scholarships, they will advice you in the right direction. If you have any problems, do not be afraid to get help.

    Be prepared for a lot of reading for each class! Authentic assessments are popular instead of final exams, and definitely require attention and time to do well. The eight week courses are amazing though as long as you don't fall behind, it's hard to catch up in the shorter time period.

    I just began getting involved in the Computing Club, and have found the resources amazing in the week I have been involved. This is the only club I currently have experience in, but there are similar clubs for each of the degree paths that allow alumni, undergraduate and graduates to share resources and information.

    I have found that in college, especially in distance education you get out of it what you put into it. The information is there to learn, the resources are definitely there to use, it is up to the student to utilize these.

    UMUC has a no tolerance policy for cheating or plagiarism.     What I like about UMUC in the fun department is its proximity to the Washington Metropolitan area which encompasses Maryland, DC and Virginia. Between those three states there is something to do for everyone. I particularly enjoy the access to great dining and cuisine and as a student here you'll find that all ethnicities are covered from African to Mexican. Also since I have a low budget I enjoy frequenting all of the numerous thrift shops around town which, by the way, stay busy because you are always able to find nice things when shopping there.

    I rarely eat at the school but what I have eaten here is mainly fast food. Fare choices could be a little healthier but so far eating at UMUC has definitely provided much needed convenience.

    I do not live on campus but my general impression of dorm life is that the dorms are clean and safe. I haven't heard of any complaints otherwise.

    UMUC is a solid educational institute and if you work hard you will succeed. However, it is a little more forgiving than other institutions and is better suited for those students who have other commitments and obligations that could have prevented them from attending college were it not for schools such as UMUC.

Very global in both professors and students current locations and home country locations. USA based. Typical professors are extremely interactive and responsive. Forum discussions are academic and an excellent exchange of ideas and perspectives from both co-students and professors. Professors will speak with you or e-mail you privately with quick responses. Writing coaches are available as part of each class to assist in improving your assignments prior to turning them in. This is extremely helpful for presenting a higher quality of paper.

    Students who are affiliated with the military whether a civilian living in/near a base, airman, airwoman, dependents of military and civilian members. It's also great for those who don/t want to leave mom or dad yet or those who cannot afford all of the expenses of traditional college (room, board, etc.).

    Bowling, go downtown, hookah lounges, football (soccer) games, exercise at one of the two gyms, and work.

    Chili's, J.R. Rocker's, a cafe, bowling alley are located across the street from the main education center. Not too much of a variety, but they are usually open at night which is great for lab students.

    Some classes do not have a midterm, so the final is cumulative of all of the material. Large essay assignments are usually overlapped by homework and tests/quizzes. Prioritizing is key. Many midterm and final exams count for about one-third of the total class grade each.
    Tips for prospective students

    Know how many classes you can withstand at a time. Since classes are fast-paced, you have to pay extra attention and do all of the work if you want to stay on point.

    Teacher to student ratio in face-to-face classes is good (17-27) students. Many of the professors are truly interested in helping the students achieve more and succeed -- they offer daily conference time with them. Courses are taken in a period of 1-8 weeks or so; it's fast-paced but a great way to gain credits faster.

The swimming pool has a free program called fitness lunch for those who wish to be better swimmers.

    I think this school is affordable for any college student who also has a job. Each class is roughly 745 dollars, a lot cheaper than most universities in the states. I am able to pay for college as I go through, so I am coming out of college debt free!

    There's a lot of stuff to do here! To start, you are in Germany so there's a lot of nearby and far off traveling readily available. On base, there's restaurants, fitness centers (swimming pool and the gym), movies, shopping centers, and more! It's a lot of fun and there's a lot of free stuff to do to.

    Again, the food and dining do not apply to this school. There are tons of restaurants all over base. Chili's, Anthony's pizza, and the bowling alley are right next door!

    The dorm life does not apply to this school. This is campus on a military base, so everyone either already lives on base or off base through the military.

    The lower levels classes are easy enough as long as all the work is done. The upper level courses are challenging and demand real efforts from the student. So far I have done well in this school. As long as you can dedicate the time needed to the classes you are in, you will be fine.

    Honestly there is nothing to worry about. Just talk to an advisor either face-to-face or via phone. It is easy to get into this school and they work wonderfully with transfer students.

Sure you can Google all of your answers, but what good is a degree when you didn't learn anything? I feel like I have learned a lot, but I certainly have made an effort to.

    It is not too difficult if taking online classes. As a student the only thing that changes, assuming a steady studying habit is present, is getting used to changes in Professorship. The Library and research databases are well rounded and extensive providing significant amount of material. Plagiarism is unacceptable and every term training in how to avoid is given which helps. Writing centers are also a good resource.
    Tips for prospective students

    There are three divisions: USA, Europe and Asia. Each once may have different classes and can only be taken one at a time but change of division easy. If taking online classes and military, nothing except the type of classes may change. May sure to apply for transfer credit evaluation within the first two semesters to compensate for any documents the school may need. In addition to the latter, UMUC is very flexible is awarding transfer credit!

    This school is big and has many resources for everything a student may need. If a distance learner, it is easy to access, and easy to get a hold of by phone when you need help. It also is very affordable for military.

    There is a great writing center where faculty can help you build your writing skills. Also the library database is full of knowledge and scholarly based journals. There are also a active student councils who care about your experience with UMUC.

    On-site is the best way to go for developing interpersonal work relationships professionally, however UMUC's webtycho is secure and simple to use. The program allows for accesiblen classroom discussions and furthered student-professor engagement. UMUC also has an outstanding library database equipped with full length pdf versions of scholarly journals.

    It can be tough to do a hybrid class if you have never done it before, however, the Professors make it easy to transition. The students are great, professional and helpful. I would recommend this college to students who are looking for higher education.

    For the Adelphi {College Park, MD} campus, numerous dining choices in walking distance and even public transportation {metro} accessible. Largo campus slightly more limited, although public transportation {metro} is accessible, but automobile utility is practicable for this campus in order to get to the many, various dining options in the vicinity.

    Strategically challenging and exciting. You will learn plenty and have an enjoyable time achieving your academic goal(s).

    I'm not sure about the normal pricing, but for military students, it's $250.00 per credit which isn't too bad. I think it's worth the money.

    I like the classes. They are challenging and force me think. I do have to spend hours a week studying, however that's any school you go to. The program is perfect for me.

    When I applied there, I had no high school GPA and I had not taken the ACT so they didn't have much to judge me on, and they gave me a chance. I'm in the military, and their online program allows me to go to school full time while working full time. I fully intend to obtain my associates degree from here and use the GPA to get accepted and transfer to another school once I'm out of the military, however they're perfect for me right now.

    For $251 per credit; that's barely anything at all. The class choices are not only awesome; their is on-call tutoring available and a mentoring program to help you complete and stay on top of your studies. For the price; I'd like to see another college beat that.
    What to do for fun

    The main campuses are in Europe, Asia and Maryland, USA. The people are very interesting and come from many different backgrounds and the campuses are very eco-friendly and beautiful. A very zen area to study and learn.

    The classes are challenging but discussion topics and conferences help make it easier to grasp the more difficult concepts. The courses and syllabuses are made so you can get the most out of the course in the 8-week period and I find that this is the best system in post-secondary school and really loathe to take the usual semester-long classes now.
    Tips for prospective students

    The classes are 8-week courses, therefore stay on your toes! Keep a list of what is due during that week and check off; it's really easy to fall behind, but the faculty is very understanding if you have a valid excuse; majority of students are working adults and/or active/veterans of the U.S. Army.

    UMUC has amazingly well-travelled student and faculty body. The faculty and staff are helpful and on call for any questions 24/7. Anyone, from any background feels immedietely welcome here.

    UMUC ASIA Okinawa is located on several different US Marine Corps guarded bases. There is no way to enter the base without proper ID and the gates are guarded by trained military personnel at all times. I do not see how safety would ever be an issue.

    I have yet to feel like my money is overly well spent. I am paying for an education and I expect to graduate with a proper education. I will have to continue to take courses through UMUC before I can say for sure what kind of Bang for my buck I am really getting.
    What to do for fun

    If attending UMUC Asia in Okinawa, Japan, you are probably a military member or spouse frustrated by the lack of things to do on this island. There are plenty of adventures to take, use this time in Okinawa to expand your horizons and see areas that you have never seen before. Explore the jungles or taste some of the local cuizine. Although the UMUC Campus has nothing to do for fun the area in which it is located is a place of opportunity for exploration and adventure.

    I do not live in a dorm, I am located in Okinawa, Japan and I live in my own home.

    It is easy to stay on task with UMUC due to the lighter load then some colleges offer. Full time is 3 classes where as some colleges require full time to consist of 4 or more classes. I can stay focused on the task at hand when I have less areas of interest to distract me.
    Tips for prospective students

    Organize your time wisely! School is a lot of hard work, the best way to succeed is not to bombard yourself with last minute test crammings, but to spread your time out wisely and organize each task in advance well before each due date. Remember the people that are there for you, if you need help, speak with the staff of UMUC and they will find every available way to assist you.

    University of Maryland-University College is well diversified and goes above and beyond to ensure all individuals are provided with means necessary to attend college. Weither one is a active duty military member or the spouse of an active duty military member, campuses across asia and europe additional to the maryland campus make completing a desired degree simple instead of an area of loss for those serving our country. I attend UMUC-Asia because I am a spouse of an active duty military member, a US Navy Reservist and an expectant mother and nothing yet has held me back from graduating from college.
