Great for these types of students

Still living with their parents or adults going back to school

    Tips for prospective students

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE GOING TO RENT AN APARTMENT. So many things can go wrong. And you won't get ANY help from the school. Even if they assure you that they will help you, take it from someone who's been there and done that.

    Bang for the buck

The cost is low but paying for an apartment can get pretty pricey.

    Am enjoying being here

Honestly, I had the most horrific experiences with my roommates and the housing here. The Office of Student Housing is awful. They are not helpful and they don't have an effective system in place. If you have any problems with your roommates, the school says they have resources but... I have not had good experiences with them. I've been in contact with the Dean of Students and the Director of Student Housing and neither of them have done much to help me. To read more about my experiences I have a UMB Blog at http://blogs.umb.edu/emilylevin002/

    Am learning a lot

I love the classes and my teachers. Its really cool to be in such a diverse environment.

    Campus Safety

i have never felt unsafe there and i spend some nights there till almost midnight.

    Greek Life

    none.

    Clubs and Activities

there are a ton of them and if one doesn't fit what you are interested in it only takes 15 signatures to create a club.

Great for these types of students

students who are outgoing and love getting involved.

    What to do for fun

near the school is a 24 hour bowling alley and the t runs till 12:30 so all the clubs in boston are at your disposal.

    Food and Dining

the caf has a lot of options and since there is no dorms the grocery store is right down the road in walking distance of the t and the apartments.

    Dorm Life

their are no dorms but the apartments are right next door and they are really nice apartments. they are also in walking distance of the t.

    Academic Rigor

personally i am in the college of liberal arts so my classes are not too rigorous. a lot of my friends are in the college of math and sciences though and they feel like the work while there being a lot of it they don't feel to overwhelmed.

    Tips for prospective students

apply for scholarships even if you don't think you need it, every cent helps. this school doesn't have dorms so the school helps in finding roommates for the apartment complex next door but sometimes that doesn't always work, i'd suggest to meet people at new-student day and room with them. also join as many clubs as you want and go to their events that is how you'll meet most of your friends.

    In three sentences

umass boston is a commuter school so at times it seems like there isn't many opportunities to meet new people and make friends but there are plenty of clubs which is where most of me and my friends met. the professors are really interesting and the ones i have had really made it a point to help students in risk of failing or ones who are genuinely confused. this school also gives out a lot of financial aid so anyone in need of help, be sure to apply for all of their scholarships and work study programs.

Great for these types of students

It is a great school for students who want to peruse their careers while obtaining part-time jobs.

    Tips for prospective students

Keep up with all the school work, join clubs and different organizations. Do not be afraid to ask for help whether from a fellow classmate, professor, or tutor.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is not as expensive as other universities in the area and the professor teach well.

    Am enjoying being here

It is a friendly environment and people seem to be very open to new friendships.

    Am learning a lot

I think the professors are great, although not all, most are very helpful and teach well.

    Bang for the buck

The school charges you medical insurance that you'll need to go to Wiser and waive it on your own. They don't tell you how with the hope of ripping off $2,000 off of you. You have to keeping asking until you get some worker really annoyed and they tell you how to waive it. This is nothing short of a scam. Books in math & science field changes per year, so that student have to constantly pay $150 - $250 per book. Rip Off!!!

    Am enjoying being here

This place doesn't technically have a campus, so there's really no place to hang out at. You have to leave to somewhere else to hang out.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning, but the 2 math teachers and 1 physics teacher that I had in my freshman year were horrible. Both my math teachers cannot explain well. My physics teacher expects everyone in his intro physics class to be physics majors, while in reality, none of us was planning to major in physics. You'll learn something, definitely, but your grade will suffer dramatically.

    Clubs and Activities

A Lot of clubs, such as; Asian club, Black Student Center (BSC), GLBT Club, Women's Club. By the way, you don't have to be a certain ethnicity in order to join the club, it is over for ALL race, age, sexual orientation - no restrictions.

    What to do for fun

I go to the Gym in the McCormack building, and I usually go swimming in the athletic center right when it gets warmer. They have a lot of clubs offered also, so you will end up finding something that you like.

    Food and Dining

There is about 3 cafeterias at UMB. The major one is located in the Campus Center and it has Burger King, Pizzeria, Make your salad station, a healthy sandwich shop, a soup counter and others and a new Mexican burrito/wrap kiosk. So there is a variety of dining that is offered.

    Dorm Life

Sadly, there is no dorm life here at UMB, however, they have apartments near by which many students house in. If you meet the right people, you can hang out and study with them at their apartments which give the feeling of the dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are much more complex and complicating than others, but if you are willing to learn and willing to seek help from professors, tutors and other students, you will do fine whether if the course is hard or not. I failed my first Bio exam with a 56 and I found a study partner and my second exam grade was a whopping 89. So seeking help works!

    Tips for prospective students

If you are planning on attending UMB come with a smile and willing to meet people because if you dont, then your time at UMB might be boring. The University is a great school for me because its not too big and its not too small. Always use ratemyprofessor.com before choosing your class because some professors arent so great.

    In three sentences

Large research university with alot of accessible courses. The university also have alot of nice professors that offers the extra help to thier students. And what is a college/university with out the students? The students are social and some are nicer than others.

    Campus Safety

Being near Dorchester, things can be unsafe. In the past year there was a bomb threat, and a couple robberies on students near the apartments and in the parking lot.

    Clubs and Activities

    Many things to choose from.

    What to do for fun

Kayaking and boating is free to students with an I.D.

    Food and Dining

High prices for below-average food. I usually find myself ordering food to the campus or going into Dorchester to find food.

    Dorm Life

Many students commute to the campus, but there are a few who reside either at the nearby apartments or off-campus.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on the course you are choosing. There are plenty of courses and each professor has their own teaching style. I recommend ratemyprofessor.com when choosing courses.

    Tips for prospective students

Review material every day and study hard. If you do not understand do not hesitate to talk to the professor. They are there to help you.

    In three sentences

The campus is nice aesthetically. They are in the process of adding a couple new buildings. The classrooms, lecture halls, and labs seem slightly dated.

    Food and Dining

There is a limited choice in dining options in the food court however there is many little places around campus to get a snack. There is currently no meal plan for students.

    Dorm Life

The downside to the good value of thus university is the forms are not accessible for a few more years during the 25 year plan. Living on your own can be a fun thing but takes away from the college experience

    Academic Rigor

The faculty are amazing and are very challenging.

    Tips for prospective students

Defiantly apply and give thus university a chance it could be the best four years of your life. Its really easy to get lost in the beginning but you will fit in very fast. Also consider the first year program for the college if liberal arts students.

    In three sentences

This university has the most amazing value, students, faculty, location and diversity. The university is easy to get to and great for commuters. The school could use a little more renovations to its current buildings to make finding classrooms easier.

For fun, there is a game room that can be pretty live but also being involved in the Students Arts and Events Council is fun by gaining volunteer hours, getting free stuff, meeting new people, and having a say in what goes on campus.

    Food and Dining

The food is expensive and the quality is not that great.

    Dorm Life

Although the area is fantastic, there are no dorms only apartments and the rent is expensive in the luxury apartments.

    Academic Rigor

The course work is hard, but interesting. They really want you to know how to write and apply what you are learning in the lectures to everyday life. It can be surprising how hard the materials can be.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved as soon as you step foot in the door. I can't imagine my life without the experiences I've had by joining the Student Arts and Events Council, the track team, and a member for Beacon Voyages for Service.

    In three sentences

The campus, faculty, and staff at UMass Boston are great. The majority of professors are really helpful and want you to succeed and learn.

When it's warm outside, students hang out near the beach or just lay out in the grass to tan. Since it's by the beach, there is always a nice ocean breeze. The atmosphere is really relaxing.

    Food and Dining

The food is alright. Nothing too special. They have the regular breakfast with egg, bagels, bacon, and pancakes. Lunch/dinner consists of Burger King, sandwiches, sushi, salad, pizza, and pasta.

    Dorm Life

There are no dorms at Umass Boston but there is a choice of housing nearby. They are currently in the works of building dorms for students.

    Academic Rigor

Classes are pretty straightforward unless you take your courses specifically for your major. It get's more difficult when you take those specific courses.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are coming in as a management major, there is a MAP program you have to complete in order to graduate. I find it time consuming and should be a choice for students rather than mandatory.

The location of this school is perfect for students who like to be by the beach during all seasons. This school has a large diversity of students from all over the world so you can learn a lot from different students. The campus itself is right on the water and very pretty. There are sailing and boating options right on campus. Also you are within one of the funnest cities on the East coast so the options for fun and enlightenment are boundless. If you love museums, nightlife, sports, or just about anything else Boston has them all.

    Food and Dining

The options for food and drink are pretty good at UMass Boston. There are ample options and most are of good quality.

    Dorm Life

I was not a student who would have lived in the dorms however there is only off campus living at UMass Boston, no dorms.

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

    In three sentences

As an engineering student in the college of math and sciences, I was largely unimpressed with the classes withing the engineering and physics curriculum. I feel that many of the professors view their profession as a job rather than a passion which is something I feel is paramount in quality teachers. I did, however, find many of the other classes I took in other programs within the college of math and sciences, EEOS, Chemistry, and Math, to be of a very high quality.

    Campus Safety

The campus is very safe, since it's not in the center of Boston. There is also a police office on campus, in case there is an emergency. There are three levels of police patrols around the campus area: the Campus police, Boston police, and the State police, so you're guaranteed patrol from these three levels of police departments.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs that are geared towards specialized interested, such as philosophy, anthropology, psychology, science, and the like. There are activities every month and many attend to sports games.

    Bang for the buck

UMass Boston is the only state university in Boston and it is a far superior option, in terms of costs. It costs thousands of dollars less than near-by private universities and you receive a more quality education for the amount you pay for. UMass Boston costs approximately $12,000 a year as a full-time student, while other privately-owned universities cost at least $15,000 to $48,000 a year as a full-time student. As a UMass student, you'll get the same quality education as a private institution, and in some cases a better quality than private institutions because you're not treated like a number, and you'll pay less for better services.

    What to do for fun

There are many clubs you can join, that are either related to your major or not. There is also an Art Gallery, student life center where activities will be posted and you can get discounted tickets to the Aquarium, Museum of Science, the MFA, Celtics games and more.

    Food and Dining

The food offered at UMass Boston is fairly good. There are variety of choices and the university takes active measures to remain eco-friendly with compost. The cafeteria offers Burger King, a sub shop, Italian food, and other shops. They also offer healthier choice in food and drink. The only down side to the food and dining is that it can get expensive if you buy food regularly. Yet, UMass offers microwaves so if you bring your own lunch, you'll be sure you'll get a warm lunch.

    Dorm Life

Since UMass Boston is a commuter university, there are no dorms and hardly a dorm life. There are, however, two apartment complexes less than 10 minutes away from campus in which many students lease apartments and gather a community atmosphere.

    Academic Rigor

Umass Boston definitely has challenging courses, yet if you attend classes regularly, they will not seem difficult in the least. Many classes contain a heavy reading load and not much else, so if you attend classes regularly, pay attention, and read the material, you'll easily get an A to B range grade. The most difficult part is time management and not the actual work itself, so be sure to make realistic goals for yourself, otherwise the academic rigor isn't really that rigorous.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of professors office hours if you do not understand an aspect of the course. They will not feel bothered and will take the time to make sure you have an understanding of the material. Join clubs with interest groups, that way you'll find people with similar interests as you.

    In three sentences

Umass Boston is a wonderfully diverse, urban university, with a beautiful view of Boston Harbor. The professors genuinely care about their field of study and are excited when students show passionate interest in and outside of the classroom. My professor experience has been that each professor cares about your advancement and understanding and will take time out to make sure you apprehend the subject in a way that will make you feel appreciated and not just another number. The only negative aspect is the lack of community one feels in the student body, for it is a commuter university and many people do not stay after classes and get involved. But if you join clubs and extracurricular activities, it will be easier to make long-lasting friendships.

    What to do for fun

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

Despite being an urban campus, Public Safety does a great job of making sure people are protected. There are shuttles go from campus to the local MBTA stop well into the evening. And in case of an emergency Public Safety has a response notification system that is sent out via text.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is not a major part of campus life. The organizations are seen as one of many clubs students can join.

    Clubs and Activities

The campus center is filled with groups that you can join. Student government and the school paper Mass Media are popular activities. The SAEC is a group that plans events and off campus excursions. The SAEC is always offering discounted tickets to cultural spots around town. There are also little hangout spots in the campus center for larger clubs like The Women's Center, The Black Student Center, The Veteran's Center, and Casa Latina. Each of these groups hosts a major event on campus during the year. So between classes there is a lot to get involved with.

Great for these types of students

Working Students, Parents, Veterans, Older (25+), Transfer, People just looking to take an affordable class.

UMB has a small but thought-provoking sculpture park. Hidden in little corners around campus are works by Modern masters like DeKooning and Sol Lewitt

    Bang for the buck

Tuition costs are rising. But even with the yearly uptick in the price UMB is loads cheaper than the private schools in the area.

    What to do for fun

UMB is located on Boston Harbor. In the summer and early fall the campus offers harbor cruises at no or low cost to riders. The campus is next door to the JFK Presidential Museum and Library as well as the Massachusetts Archives and Museum. UMB students can get in free to both locations.

    Food and Dining

Campus catering is provided by Sodexo. All of the employees are very friendly once you get to know them. There are six cafes and dining areas across the campus that serve ala carte. The main cafeteria located in the Campus Center has a sandwich and salad bar and well as hot lunches. There is always a vegetarian option as well as fresh sushi that you can watch being prepared.

    Dorm Life

Being that it is a commuter school there are not dorms available. But the Office of Student Housing will suggest apartments around town and even match you up with a UMB student. Many students who live off campus choose the Peninsula or Harbor Point apartment complexes. While some students, if they have a spare room in an apartment, will advertise on bulletin boards across the school.

    Academic Rigor

UMass, Boston is a research university. I can count on one hand the classes where I did not have to write a research paper. You will spend a lot of time in the Healey library. While not all professors are social butterflies, they all can communicate their subjects effectively. Each class is intended to push you further intellectually. Professors will make not excuses about this. The best professors seem to have the same mantra you paid for a world class education, I intend to give it to you. If you do find you are having trouble in class office hours are a respected standard. Professors will gladly give you some one on one time if you, the student, makes the effort to meet with them. There are also lots of places where you can get help from tutors in the Campus Center. If you have a learning difference the fine folks at the Ross Center will make sure your needs are met.

    Tips for prospective students

This school is for the hard worker. Many people applying to UMB might consider this a fall back school. But as a family member told me once You shouldn't call it a fall back if it's moving you forward in life. That being said, UMB is a microcosm of the world at large. The student body is as diverse as it can get from 18 year olds fresh out of high school to veterans returning home. There are even some senior citizens who attend UMB at the Olli Institute. At UMB education is a life long process.

    In three sentences

Would you like the campus experience but don't think you can fit it in to your busy schedule? If you have responsibilities like a job or family obligations than Umass, Boston is the right place for you. As a 'commuter campus' UMB Faculty and Staff know and respect the challenges of the world outside of academia and will help you as best they can to earn your degree.

Most of my classes are really easy. My math class is not that fun and coming from a person who loves math this class is not my favorite. But overall the academic rigor is really easy. Plus, you only have class once, twice, or three times a week.

    Tips for prospective students

Fun??? I work full-time, in the military, single mom, and take 9(+) credits a semester. For fun I study or go to the gym and most of the time I multi task and do both at the same time. Running on the treadmill while readingover my notes or listening to a lecture.

    Campus Safety

I've never heard of anything dangerous happening on campus. The school is mostly safe and if something does happen, every student is alerted through the UMass Boston Alert System. You're required to give it your phone number upon enrollment. Usually the alerts come as texts, automated phone calls or email alerts, which are forwarded to every student's student email address. The system also alerts students of snow days or shut downs.

    Clubs and Activities

Like I said before there're plenty of clubs on campus. You can access a list of them on the school's website. UMass plays no favorites and so there are even Christian groups as well as a Catholic chapel. There's even an LGBT club.

Great for these types of students

If you're into science or business or math, this is the school for you. UMass Boston often advertises it's specialties in research on train ads or brochures throughout campus. If you're an art student, best to look somewhere else.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are a few sketchy looking hallways in some of the older buildings. But once you get used to them they aren't so bad.

    Bang for the buck

UMass offers several exchange programs and is affiliated with different study abroad programs, like Globalinks. The study abroad advisors are extremely helpful and supportive of any students looking to go abroad - and you can travel almost anywhere. There are also scholarship opportunities for students with financial aid: merit scholarships can be acquired as well as scholarships offered by individual departments. The science department also has a community for science majors, and even offers exchange programs for those specific students. A friend of mine went to Scotland for a couple of weeks through that program and loved it. Teachers are also very supportive and will write recommendation letters for you if you simply ask and tell them what it's for. There are plenty of clubs for almost every interest - and if there isn't one you like you can always make your own!

    What to do for fun

Depends on the day. At the beginning of each semester there's a host of fun things to do: barbeques, free pizza, movie nights, games... There's also a game room on the first level of the entrance building, the Campus Center. There, students can bring in their own game consoles and Videogames and play for however long they want. I think the game room also owns their own consoles, along with multiplayer games for those consoles. There are also pool tables and a big flat screen television with cable programming.

    Food and Dining

The food isn't bad but it isn't great either. Most students will tell you that it's overpriced. For example, one small sugar cookie costs almost two dollars; a sandwich with a drink will ring you up for eight or nine (and the sandwiches aren't all that big). Bottom line: for the same prices, you can buy more food from the Shaw's supermarket near the JFK/UMass train station.

    Dorm Life

UMass doesn't have dorms. Instead there is an apartment complex nearby, which I hear is fairly more expensive than it's worth. My advice: live at home with your parents or rent an apartment in a more affordable area with some friends. Then just commute.

    Academic Rigor

Classes aren't all that challenging - depending on your definition of challenging and how you handle your academics. Overall, paying attention in class and taking notes is the best way to go. But if you're in a course where you feel it's difficult to pay attention, move to the front of the room or switch out - if you're not interested in the course, the work will only be even more difficult to get into.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to go to UMass, like most colleges you don't need to know what you want to major in when you apply. There are organizations on campus that help freshman with scheduling classes and meeting other students, such as CLA! First (only available to college of liberal arts students). Also remember that UMass is a college so even your personal schedules will change - there're more essays and exams so you'll have to budget your time wisely. And don't be afraid of people! Since UMass is mostly a commuter school, making friends won't be as easy as in high school. So if there's someone you want to be friends with you'll have to take the initiative. Remember to be you!

    In three sentences

UMass Boston is one of the top public universities in Massachusetts. It's located on a peninsula with a great view of the water, which is a great place to relax in between classes. The faculty is also very professional and instructors are well-trained and informative in their areas of teaching.
