Great for these types of students

Even if you hate the city, you will love the campus. Around 20,000 students attend the U of M, but it's easy to feel like you belong.

    Tips for prospective students

The university offers TONS of scholarships, so make good friends with the workers in the scholarship office. They are great at making sure deadlines don't creep up on you out of nowhere.

    Bang for the buck

I have my entire tuition, room, meal plan, and books paid for with scholarships.

    Am enjoying being here

There are ALWAYS things going on in the Tiger Den or on the track field. It's easy to get yourself in a game of ultimate frisbee or kickball. The SAC also does a great job getting fun events a few times a month.

Great for these types of students

Every student that's looking for a great school

    Tips for prospective students

1.STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!!!! 2.Get enough sleep for class 3.Have a light snack or eat breakfast 4.Try to workout whenever possible-we have a free recreational facility for students to partake in a variety of exercises and sports---It's FREE with school ID- don't gain the FRESHMAN 15 5.Get a study group started or join one, every bit of studying will help with even the hardest class 6.keep a steady schedule so that you can still schedule other things you would like to do like spending time with family and friends or enjoying you favorite hobby. 7.if you work or would like to work make sure it does not interfere with school. I learned that the hard way but I fixed the mistake before it was too later 8. Take every scholarship opportunity available. College isn't cheap, and take it from me, you will not want to continue paying for school well after you graduate, many, many, many years late

    Bang for the buck

The great thing about this school is you have the opportunity to drop classes if you feel uneasy, whether you really feel the class is not for you or whether you will fail the first test, you have the opportunity to redeem yourself before the deadline or just before its too late. there's also a wide range of food choices, so you'll never go hungry. Full-time (12+ hrs) freshmen and sophomores will have a chance to get a meal plan, and a 300 debit balance. You can find more information about dining dollars at the University of Memphis website which is www.memphis.edu.

    Am enjoying being here

It's great going here, but just like high school, some professors are boring while others will have you leaving their class in amazement, but regardless of whether you have fun in every class, you main goal is to stay focus and learn and make the best of what you have.

    Am learning a lot

Be sure that even the basic classes you choose your first year are gearing you toward one of your many major choices, if you haven't already chosen a major.....trust me you will certainly change your mind more than once.

Great for these types of students

Democratic (professors are very liberal) Religious (many amazing organizations) Overachievers (there are many ways to shine here!) Underachievers (it's easy to slip out after classes without feeling the need to get involved) Those who wish to impact their campus and community Volunteers (St. Jude's Up 'til Dawn was founded here, and it's an amazing way to help children in need!) Those who are sick of cafeteria food (teehee) TN students with midline ACT scores and little to spend on college

    Tips for prospective students

Memphis offers many academic and merit scholarships, so do your research and apply early. Once accepted, use Facebook to connect with your future classmates. It really helps to know other students beforehand! Don't think that you have to become involved in everything. It's good to meet people and do something useful, but remember why you're here: to learn. Don't forget who you are and what makes you unique- and find people who accept that, instead of trying to change you.

    Bang for the buck

Wow! Scholarships here are amazing, and academic scholarships begin with a 26 ACT. TN residents with a 21 automatically get $4000 a year from HOPE, so if you excelled in high school and have high grades and a lengthy resume, everything will be covered. You might even get PAID to attend! The resources on this campus are all free and range from psychological counseling to interview preparations. We have a great newspaper, and the University sponsors many free events as well. And... our new University Center offers inexpensive, great food!

    Am enjoying being here

Unless you're Greek or an Emerging Leader, many people who are overly involved on campus will probably shun you. But... what I've learned is to find a group of people that get you, and to not care about what anyone else thinks! There are many different organizations on campus, and tons of exciting events, so make the most of it and keep your head held high.

    Am learning a lot

Believe it or not, my classes taught by graduate assistants are my favorites! All of my professors truly care about their students, and they have been very forgiving of first semester freshmen! Although I haven't taken any upper level courses yet, I am actually excited about moving forward because the professors here really want you to learn.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Memphis is a great school, however, just recently the tuition and cost of living has gone up. Due to this the importance of finding and receiving scholarships and grants is greater than ever.

    Am enjoying being here

There is plenty to do in Memphis, let alone on campus. Whether you want to enjoy Beale Street or if you want to enjoy sporting events, there is always something going on. SAC schedules events through out the semesters that students can attend that relieve the stresses of a college student.

    Am learning a lot

The professors know what they are teaching and know how to teach it. The only drawback would be some classes are taught by students seeking a higher degree in education and some of their classes are experimental.

Non-traditional students Military veterans Traditional students

    Tips for prospective students

    * Realize that most of the professors are very liberal and will attempt to convert you to their way of thinking. Its one thing if its a Pol Sci course, its something completely different when its a Foreign Language, English or Math class. * Take advantage of the tutoring services available to you. * Accept the fact there is student racism on campus because of where U of M is located and that there are normally two of each social club-one for African Americans and one for everyone else. * Treat your studies as a job, dedicate yourself to your school work and balance your time wisely.

    Bang for the buck

My GI Bill was able to fund my education without much difficulty and am considering graduate school there right now.

    Did enjoy being here

It wasn't too bad, had alot of fun there and there is definately a group for almost every interest.

    Did learn a lot

Depending on the subject, I learned alot of things there and it prepared me pretty well for life after school.

    Campus Safety

very safe! despite the bad rep memphis gets as a city, the university of memphis is a safe environment. there are officers patrolling at all hours, various emergency towers constructed all across campus, we have dark hour escorts, and emergency tiger text, which is an alert sent to the cell phones of students to keep them updated on suspicious activity. i'm never afraid to leave my dorm at night.

    Greek Life

greeks are heavily involved on campus and in the community. they help with move-ins, tutoring, events, and most anything else you can think of. they definitely keep down the stereotypes around here. my favorite is the yard shows they put on, where they step for everyone while representing their fraternity or sorority.

    Clubs and Activities

u of m has a wonderful selection of clubs and activities. multicultural, nerds/fandom, anime, naacp, you name it, we have it. and if somehow someone wants to join a specific type of club and it isn't offered here, they could easily create one so long as there are seven members and a code of conduct.

Great for these types of students

this university is great for individuals looking to major in education, sports management, engineering, and foreign language, as those departments are really strong and have a lot to offer. this university is also good for students who like a lot of extra help and available information for any and everything involving school and beyond.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

we don't really have any traditions other than the fight song we sing at games, which may be an aspect of most universities. an odd location on campus would be mcwhether library, which is no longer a library, but is said to be haunted by the ghost of a girl who was murdered by a janitor in there. we also have a dorm, myders, that is said to be haunted by the daughter of the first president of the university of memphis. he had it built in the shape of an e, as her name was elizabeth.

    Bang for the buck

to be honest, we have a rather reasonable tuition here compared to most places that offer maybe half of what the university of memphis offers.

    What to do for fun

there is always a team to support and a game to go to, we have a recreation center complete with an exercise/weight room, two olympic sized pools, racquet ball courts, several basketball courts and more, the university center, also called the uc, has a food court, a restaurant with pools tables, and a movie theater, and we have an organization called the student activities council, or sac, that always hosts different events for almost every day of the week for students to participate in. best of all, there is usually free food involved.

    Food and Dining

the five star rating isn't necessarily for taste, but for choice and variety. we have many different restaurants on campus in multiple locations across campus. there is even a little shop in the library! if you are a vegetarian or vegan, they have meals for that, if you are a carnivore, there are several places to eat, and if you are a sweets fanatic, look out, because you'll end up gaining the freshman 15 in about a week and a half. as far as known food chains go, we have burger king, taco bell, chick-fil-a, subway, and dunkin doughnuts.

    Dorm Life

overall, dorm life on this campus is actually pretty cool. there would be only one building people would complain about and that would be rt. i refrained from using the full name to keep from fanning the flames of bad reputation. if someone does end up attending u of m, just ask about rt and anyone will tell you just say no. with that being said, i actually lived in that dorm freshman year and had no problems with it, mostly because i lived on the honors floor and it remained pretty quiet. rt is the most social dorm of them all, recommended for freshmen, maybe sophomores. the remaining housing areas would be best for upperclassmen trying to get in a good nights studying or sleep. we have round the clock security and desk assistance, so its pretty helpful and they have quick responses to problems that may arise.

    Academic Rigor

i wish there was a way to choose 3.5 for academic rigor. the difficulty of your courses is what you make it. if you plan on being the bum in the back of the classroom that dozes off every ten minutes, is late to lecture, or doesn't do the assignments, then yeah, it will be tough. your professors are more than likely aware of your behavior, bad and good, and both have its payoffs. a positive attitude goes a long way also. when in the math department, an academic tutor is advised. many students complain about the instructors being foreign and difficult to understand. i had that issue both semesters my freshman year.

    Tips for prospective students

for anyone attending this university, my number one piece of advice would have to be don't be afraid to ask! there is literally a department of service for everything, spanning from academic help to being a first generation student to needing health advice. as a secondary tip, steer clear of the uc (university center) until it's time to socialize! the uc is the center of activity on campus and it is quite easy to get distracted from school work if you are anywhere inside of the building other than the technology hub, a computer lab on the second floor.

    In three sentences

the university of memphis has a surprisingly diverse faculty and student body for a southern school. there are loads of student help and services available here as well. it's best feature by far is frosh camp, a camp for incoming freshmen to learn about the u of m, make friends, and ask the questions those outside of the university may not have answers to.

Great for these types of students

Students that want to be involved, focus on their studies, and become a future leader should definately attend the University of Memphis.

    Tips for prospective students

Any students who want to attend the University should make sure that they talk to their councelor if they have any questions. Although the University of Memphis staff will inform you with as much information as they can give you there will always be questions. Don't be afraid to ask. It's better a student ask than possibly put a hold on their future.

    Bang for the buck

I'm very satisfied with the housing, classes, and meal plans at the University. The resources on campus are amazing and free! There is also the free gym, computer labs, study spaces, access into all University of Memphis games. The Uof M definitely gives students bang for there buck.

    Am enjoying being here

There are a great amount of student organizations. The mass amount of organizations gives students a greater chance of finding an organization that fits their interests. Most of the organizations completly organized by students; Giving students a chance to be a leader. There is plenty of diversity on the campus. The diversity opens everyones eyes to different things the world has to offer; Therefore broadening the minds of the students on campus. There are a lot more extracurricular activities on campus than there are in highschool. The campus is an all around adventure, because there is so much it has to offer.

    Am learning a lot

This is my first semester at the University of Memphis, and the amount of information bestowed upon me is amazing. The professors are very informative, and show great concern in their students education. Have a problem learning the material in class? No problem the campus provides free tutoring. Councelors are also always there to help with any issue on campus.

Great for these types of students

I'm not being cliche when I say everyone has a spot at The U of M. With a major in most areas, and ways to get involved with any interest, this lively campus offers a lot to a lot of different types of students. The honors program is involved and there are great free tutoring programs for those interested and athletes. The University of Memphis is great! GO TIGERS!

    Tips for prospective students

Buy your textbooks at Textbook Brokers off Walker Avenue. A study done by The Daily Helmsman (dailyhelmsman.com) shows they are the cheapest by far. Be weary of parking in the limited space in front of R.P. Tracks. The area has been known to see countless hit and runs of parked vehicles. Speaking of parking, if you can afford it buy a priority permit, as the lots fill up quickly and everyone's experienced being late to class due to not being able to find a parking spot. If you don't buy a pass to park in the privileged lots or garages, park off Southern, it's less packed than the Central lot. Most of all, JOIN an organization. I promise there is one that is right up your alley.

    Bang for the buck

The college is relatively inexpensive with low student fees. The student fees are always put to use, with daily activities on campus, many of which bring in celebrities, bands and other events of interest to students. A plethora of scholarships are also available from The University itself and private donors.

    Am enjoying being here

The University of Memphis is an extremely active, lively campus. With over 100 student organizations to join concentrated on a variety of interest, there's literally a place for everyone. About 25,000 students attend The U of M, with 90 percent being commuter students. Still, it seems that lots live close by and hang out on campus. Daily there are events for students to attend with a lest kept in the newly constructed University Center and on a online calendar. The Daily Helmsman keeps you up-to-date on campus news and does a great job at incorporating your opinions and what you want to read.

    Am learning a lot

If you put the effort forth to get something out of the class you will, however it is pretty easy to coast through some courses. Most of my experience is with the journalism department and I've noticed that more and more the it is focusing its curriculum on hands on experience. With the independent student newspaper, The Daily Helmsman, at any student's fingertips, there is no reason to not have honed your journalistic skill before graduating.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is amazing. There are buildings for every department and the school is working on improving it's organization and curb-appeal. Recently a new parking lot was added, and though it has less parking spaces, there are plans for many more, as well as new/nicer buildings, finished by approx. 2016. There is a four-story library that has a bagel shop, so students and faculty may munch and read. There is ample seating area with some of the most comfortable chairs on campus. There are many places to eat, including healthy choices such as Subway and Chik-Fil-A. As well as these amazing things, however, are the excellent academic programs. There are qualified teachers in every department, and the undergraduate catalog includes a vast variety of majors, minors, and concentrations. What is particularly unique about the university is the wonderful music program, which is very extensive and not found in many schools.

    Am learning a lot

I am an Engineering Techniology major with a minor in music, so I can attest to the qualified teachers in both departments! What is most wonderful in the Engineering bui;ding is that all of the teachers are American or speak English very well. This makes it very easy to understand them. i also love that they are very professional and organized, and expect the students to be, as well. It prepares students for the world of professionalism.

    Campus Safety

Campus security has patrolman out 24/7, as well as a text/email alert system for emergency. TigerPatrol also offers to pick up and drop off students from the classes and cars after dark for free.

    Greek Life

It isn't the most important thing on this campus, but there is a big chunk of the population that participates in Greek Life. There are many fraternities and sororities that have real goals and actually wish to accomplish things.

    Clubs and Activities

University of Memphis has tons of amazing organizations. Greek life isn't a huge thing on this campus, but it's presence is definitely felt, and makes a good impact on students. There is also the marching band, one of the most amazing marching bands in the country. On top of that, there are many academic clubs as well as hobby groups to join on campus.

Great for these types of students

Musicians, basketball players, and engineers will love this school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every year a life size ceramic tiger statue is painted with some culturally significant aspect from that year. For the centennial year, all the tigers were brought out on campus and put on display. It was truly amazing. There are some very talented artists at this school.

    Bang for the buck

While our football team may be lacking, our basketball team more than makes up for it. There is nothing like being in the crowd at a basketball game and cheering on your team.

    What to do for fun

There is plenty to do in Memphis in general. Lots of museums, parks, and music venues. But on campus, with the new University Center, there's a theatre and a technology hub. And Downtown Memphis is about 15 minutes away from campus, so there is tons of stuff to do down there.

    Food and Dining

With the new University Center, all this campus is missing is a McDonalds. There is a wide range of different types of food to choose from, and they're spread across campus so you can get food close to wherever you are. The only problem is that every place is closed early on Friday afternoons.

    Dorm Life

Stay away from Richardson Towers... But everywhere else is decent. These aren't great dorms, though. Off campus housing is a better option, and sometimes it's even cheaper.

    Academic Rigor

I honestly feel like the professors here care about whether or not students learn their material. It isn't about grades to them, it's about the passion for what they love.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for when it rains. Rainboots are a must. While the campus is beautiful, it doesn't have a very nice drainage system...

    In three sentences

Memphis is a busy city filled with busy people. There is plenty here to keep anyone entertained, and the people here are very interesting. University of Memphis is a campus of accepting, diverse people all working together to create a beautiful community.

    What to do for fun

We are placed in what is known as Mid-Town so there are a lot of fun things around here to do, both on and off campus.

    Food and Dining

Our food and dining here is amazing. The known place we all go to is the U.C (union center). In that building they have, Burger King, Taco Bell, A pizza place, Chinese place, sushi, a salad bar, and a actual sit down restaurant . The other eating area is called the Tiger den which consist of Chick-Fil-A, Subway, and a cafe.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life all depends on where you live. I live in Rawls Hall, it is an all girl dorm with no drama and it is very quiet so you can get your work done on time. The girls here are respectable and the bathrooms are always clean, by the way we have a community style bathroom.

    Academic Rigor

The academics here will be exactly what you are looking for.

    Tips for prospective students

You have to be on top of your work. The professor may seem like he or she is very nice but in the end they do not play about grades. They will not make you do your work because in their eyes you are grown and you do whatever you want to do because you have an option to do so.

    In three sentences

The University of Memphis is a great school. Depending on the classes you sign up for they are very helpful. The professors actually don't check for attendance because most of the work is on the syllabus or on a power point that they email to you.

Great for these types of students

Everyone! Non-traditionals and traditionals., people of all ages, those who can't afford to pay a lot of tuition, but still want to go a great college, honor's students, those interested in greek life, religious people, those interested in going to an engaging, fun college, everyone!

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for class! This isn't high school, and you can't get away with not studying. Speak up in class, too. Most profs love that. Try to find a study area on campus that works for you. I use the Honor's Hall, cause I can always count on an open computer there. There are computer labs all over campus. Don't just rely on the ones in the UC or the library. But your books online!!! I can't stress this enough! You can save so much money that way. And if you can't find the one you need online, try to borrow it from someone else. Buying it from the bookstore should be your last option. Buy food off-campus. There are food places all around campus, and they're a lot cheaper than the ones on campus. Don't get me wrong. Most of the food on campus is great, but generally not affordable for the average broke college student. Also, don't use your dining dollars if you don't have to, because you can get the unused money back at the end of the semester. Lastly, get involved and make the most of everything the U of M has to offer. It really is a great school!

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is not expensive at all compared to the other schools in the area. And you get just as much, if not more, out of it!

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here! I don't think I could feel any more at home. I'm always hanging out in the BCM. I love it here and I love that there's always something going on. The campus feels like a little city in and of itself. It's great!

    Academic Rigor

I'm definitely learning a lot. I don't have a single class that I feel is a waste of my time or money-I'm learning in every one of them! But you do have to put forth effort on your part.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't miss orientation like I did! Get involved in organizations on campus, they will really help you in your classes. Don't be afraid to tackle your hard classes first! It will pay off in the long run! Stay on top of your homework while maintaining a healthy social life! Also, don't be afraid to ask questions! That's what the teacher/TA's are there for!

    Bang for the buck

I paid for my semester out of my own pocket, and do not regret it one bit! I feel like I picked the right college for me. It's close to home and has a very good Psychology program (my major).

    Am enjoying being here

I love being a student at the University of Memphis. The campus is a nice size, and very pretty. There is a diverse group of students, so you never know who you are going to meet! The teachers are helpful and there is just a good, positive atmosphere about the campus. There are countless places to eat and a computer lab in almost every building!

    Am learning a lot

I have learned a lot in my first semester. My spanish teacher is very involved and challenges us by speaking in spanish during the majority of the class. My psychology class has taught me so much about different theories and approaches to psychology. All of her information from class is online and her TA makes study guides for all of the tests! My biology lab teacher is easy to listen to and holds your interest. He has good humor and a relaxed way of teaching that makes it easier to stay focused on the lesson. Mrs. Powless, who is my ACAD teacher, as well as my advisor, is a HUGE help. She gives us all kinds of helpful tips for getting through college and staying focused and motivated. She has also taught us very useful test taking tips!

Campus safety is top flight, alert, and aware, because the campus policemen are always there and always riding around looking for wrong doing. Also me staying on campus, we have had several fire drills in the dorm. This action shows that they are not just here to help us, but also care about our safety as well

    Campus Safety

Because our campus is open, some pretty strange people wonder onto it. Just be cautious and aware of your surroundings. We have a text message alert system but sometimes it comes a little too late. Just use common sense and caution, mainly at night.

    Greek Life

Our greeks are great! We have a lot of frats and sororities one campus and they're always putting on some type of event.

    Clubs and Activities

There are way too many activities and clubs to list. There is something for everybody.

    Bang for the buck

This school is definitely worth the money. The classes, campus activities, resources, etc all make it worth it.

    What to do for fun

There is always something going on, you just have to keep your eye and ears open. And if you can't find anything, make something up. Most people on campus are friendly and game for some Hide N Seek after dark.

    Food and Dining

There are several great spots on campus to eat! The only downside is everything closes down kind of early. You'll never go hungry at this school. The Tiger Den and the Tigers of Memphis restaurant are awesome. Fresh Food Co. is not, avoid them.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are not the best looking in fact a lot of them are pretty beat up and will frustrate you. Don't stay on campus unless you HAVE to. You'll save money by commuting.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are challenging in a fun way and are easy to pass if you're not a slacker. It is harder to fail these classes than to pass.

    Tips for prospective students

If you plan on coming here, be prepared to actually learn and earn your grade. The classes are easy if you pay attention. The teachers are usually willing to work with you if you need help, just ask.

    In three sentences

This school is great! There is always something to do on campus and it is easy to make friends. The professors are pretty awesome too, they actually care about the students.

    Campus Safety

Safety on the University of Memphis campus is a high priority to the faculty and administrators at the university. University of Memphis police officers are regularly patrolling the perimeters around campus. There are also multiple call boxes around campus. If a student is walking home at night, they can call for a free ride back home.

    Clubs and Activities

The University of Memphis has dozens of different clubs and activities. We have the Harry Potter club, the Student Government Association, the Student Activities Council, Black Scholars, and many, MANY more. If you want to get involved on campus, the University of Memphis is the perfect place to do just that!

    Bang for the buck

It is no surprise that college is expensive. The University of Memphis is, like most public colleges, reasonably priced for a public university. However, it is important to note that since you are paying a lot to go to college, you must get everything you can out of your experience. If you get involved, take advantage of your learning experience, and make good friends, every penny will feel worth it.

    What to do for fun

If you're looking for something to do on campus, there is always something going on. The Student Activities Council often has free movies in the University Center Theater (complete with popcorn), and free comedy shows or concerts. The campus is large and beautiful, and is perfect for those who like to take walks, jog, play frisbee, or ride bikes. As a student at the University you get free access to the Recreational Center, which means free use of the facilities and free Yoga, Zumba, Cycling and many more classes. Not far from campus you have a movie theater, a mall, and multiple shops to browse.

    Food and Dining

From Subway to Dunkin Donuts, the University of Memphis has everything that you are looking for when it comes to food. They have the usual suspects, Burger King and Taco Bell, but the campus also provides a Salad and Sandwich bar for those looking for something on the healthy side. There are multiple places around campus to stop and grab a cup of coffee, whether it be at the Starbucks kiosk in the theater building or grabbing a donut and a cup of joe at Dunkin Donuts. There are also smoothies, make your own pasta, chinese food, sushi, and more!

    Dorm Life

There are two dorm areas at the University (Carpenter and the Living Learning Complex) that are definitely worth experiencing. Memphis is focused on safety, as you have to scan your ID to get into the dorms. By living on campus you are right next to the main food and dining locations, a short walk away from classes, and you get to experience many different types of programs (Ice Cream Socials, Belly Dancing classes) organized by your RA.

    Academic Rigor

The Academic opportunities at Memphis depends on your willingness to learn, but also on your major. Obviously some upper division science classes will be much harder than an upper division english class, but these may vary. Academics are important at Memphis, and it definitely shines through when you have a dedicated teacher.

    Tips for prospective students

What you give is what you get! Make the most of your college years. Try different things, and experience as many things as you can. There are dozens of organizations to join, from the Harry Potter Club to the Student Government Association. There is Greek Life. There are many different classes to take, and many kinds of speakers and events to go to. Go to as much as you can, and HAVE FUN!

    In three sentences

At the University of Memphis, it is important to take advantage of every opportunity you can! With excellent food, wonderful teachers, and (despite what some may think) good safety, the University of Memphis is definitely a campus to consider. Your college years are some of the best years of your life, so why not spend it on an awesome campus?!

    Campus Safety

The Campus is very safe; there are police and security officers everywhere.

    Bang for the buck

You definitely get bang for your buck, if you have a scholarship and the hope, it is very cheap.

    What to do for fun

A lot of people go to clubs and things on weekends; I tend to just hang out with my friends at the mall and other places. You'll be able to find something to do when you have down time.

    Food and Dining

Fresh Food (where you use your meal plan) is ok. It usually isn't too bad. However, I am vegetarian, and there are not many choices. For places you use your dining dollars (chick-fil-a, subway, burger king, etc.) everything is a little pricey.

    Dorm Life

If you are going to live on campus, try your hardest to get into the LLC. Don't stay in Richardson, it's awful there. Though, I do think they are tearing Richardson down and building new dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Classes certainly are not easy; but they are not extremely difficult either. I have not really had any trouble with the classes being too difficult; some might be a little too easy.

    Tips for prospective students

Try to make a high score on your ACT and get into the honors program.

    In three sentences

The University of Memphis is a great school. Many locals will tell you that it's not; but don't be put off by them. It is an excellent school.

Many fast food option. One health cafe only open for 3 hours. The big cafe doesn't always have the best food.

Campus safety is good. They have all kind of emergency systems in place for you if you need to get to someone in a hurry. They also have a system for people who study late or do not want to walk in the dark. They will send what they call Tiger Patrol to come get you in a cart and take you where you need to go on campus. They also send us updates through email with any situation that does happen on campus to keep students informed.

    Greek Life

Greek Life is great, and I'm not saying that because I'm Greek. It's because of the Greek Life on campus that I am Greek today. Greek's always host events on campus. They can be for fun or they can be informative. A lot of Greeks on campus also hold tutoring sessions for non Greek students sometimes as well as go out in the community and tutor and some of the middle schools and do community service work.

    Clubs and Activities

Clubs and Activities are definitely something that students should take advantage of when attending. If not you are definitely cheating yourself out of the college experience. These clubs and activities give you an opportunity to network with other students, faculty, and prospective employers for when you graduate. I would say clubs and activities are a must do in college.

    Bang for the buck

If you take advantage of everything that you can and don't just waste time at the University I believe that you can get the most bang for your buck. You just have to take advantage of the things put in front of you, just don't go overboard and lose your focus.

    What to do for fun

There is a lot to do for fun on campus. Many different Student Organizations hold numerous events throughout the year. Then there is the intramural sports, going to the rec, or even just going to the LaserQuest located not 10 minutes from the campus. You can always find something to do.

On campus food and dining is pretty good. The University just built a new UC on campus a couple of years ago and that expanded the horizons on choices. Then there is always off campus dining and there are numerous location around the University area where you can get good eats. No matter which direction you go, you can't go wrong.

    Dorm Life

When I stayed in dorms I had a great experience. The RA's had events for each floor and some that included the whole dorm population. I say if you don't stay on campus at least once in your collegiate career you are cheating yourself out of the college experience.

    Academic Rigor

The professors will try to work with you as much as they can with your course load. But some of the best things you can do are go to tutoring sessions, and form study groups with classmates. Your course work will start to get difficult and if you don't take advantage of some of the tutoring opportunities, and organizations that are there to help it can swallow you whole.

    Tips for prospective students

Just one tip, Stay focused on what you come here to do, because it is easy to get carried away from your goals in the city of Memphis.

    In three sentences

The University of Memphis is a great place to receive a post high school education. They have a pretty good teaching faculty and work to help you with issues. Campus life is always doing something and you will always have an opportunity to stay active.

    Campus Safety

Memphis is often referred to as the safest campus in Tennessee. There are constantly 5-7 police units stationed on and around campus. It is well lit, and has several help emergency stations. On the emergency stations, there are 360 degree cameras, and if you push the button, a dispatcher will come immediately. They have transportation for students in Memphis so you wont have to walk around at night, and you can contact it via text message. They also have a text message program to alert students of any suspicious activities or figures on or around campus.

    Greek Life

There are 26 different available sororities and fraternities. Plenty of options, and they all throw different fundraisers for helping out the community.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 76 clubs and activities, and the university is open to allowing students create their own clubs, as long as there are 6 standing members to go up the Activities counselor and sponsor it. We have anything from the chess club to the donuts club.. and everything in between. And if it doesn't exist, they encourage students to make it.

Great for these types of students

Great for students who want to graduate in a decent sized student body that isn't too large or too small. Most people are from the local area, so it's a friendly environment where a lot of people are close to home.. including me.

Memphis is a relatively large campus that offers and provides good supportive programs for a decent price in this day and age of college prices.

    What to do for fun

There is a recreation center with several work out rooms, dancing zoomba work out programs, large gyms, two olympic sized pools and a hot top and a sauna room. Between that and the several 24 hour computer labs available on campus, and the local lazer quest and other fun places for college students to go, I believe there is plenty of things one can do to keep themselves occupied.

    Food and Dining

There is a wide variety of food and dining available at the university of memphis, ranging from cafes to several buffets, and a couple of fast food chains and salad bars.

    Dorm Life

The doorms vary from spacious to cramped depending on what building you have been assigned. Some buildings don't have Wifi, while others don't have a central AC system.

    Academic Rigor

The rigors student body at orientation informed us of several tutoring options needed for student who need assistance. There are also classes assigned in groups specifically for freshmen who want to meet people and form study groups.

    Tips for prospective students

There are many upperclassmen and guidance counselors who warn students about the fun prospects of college life, but also important advice such as, Put classes first, because if you mess up academically, you will miss out on scholarship opportunities and will be spending the rest of the college years fixing your mistake.

    In three sentences

The campus is very large and has many resources to offer needy college students. The assistants in the main tower are very helpful, and will work with you to ensure you know what you need to do in regards to finance, classes, and dorming. It has an overall friendly atmosphere.

Don't take degree specific classes your first year, because if you do decide to change your major, your credits will be useless. Take Gen Ed classes first. Build a good relationship with your professor.

    In three sentences

It has 90 different degrees you can choose from. There are many campus activities. Tuition is lower than most colleges, however as the state cuts funding, your tuition goes up.

The only thing is if you want a late night snack nothing is open 24 hours.

    Dorm Life

At orientation we stayed in the living learning complex. It was very modern and the bathrooms were very nice. I particularly do not like sharing 3 bathrooms with 20 girls. That is why I chose the North Richardson Tower. Its an older type of dorm but its so nice inside. You have a food area, tutoring sessions, and it is right across the street from a computer lab. The dorms are set up where you get to meet alot of new people.

There are tons of on campus activities everyday and night from the day school begins. The only time there is no activity is during Dead week right before and during exams. But there are parties join on during that time.

    Food and Dining

The campus has several fast food chain on campus that serve a condensed version of their franchise menus. The campus has a Chick-fil-A, Subway, Burger King, and Taco Bell. The food is comparable to the outside sources which each of the preceding has a larger version within five miles of campus. There's a Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, and Einstein Bros . I am not a fan of the on campus version of Starbucks it's rushed and gross. There is a better one a mile or so away. There are a few other places that are not as famous but the food is impressive . Tigers of Memphis Restaurant is overpriced but with one's SAVED Dining Dollars it's with the treat at times.

    Tips for prospective students

I suggest that the upcoming students buy the books ahead of time, just to be prepared. I also suggest that they look up the teachers before they take the class. The last thing would be not to procrastinate because college is tough.

    Campus Safety

This is a downside to going to University of Memphis. Memphis has never been known for its crime free nature (is usually one of the worst crime cities in the US), and University of Memphis is unfortunately located right between two of the worst parts of town Memphis has to offer. However, despite this, the Campus Police do a very good job. As long as you do not go out walking by yourself after dark (off campus, on campus is usually pretty safe and there are transport services you can call if you do get scared and do not want to walk) or do something to obviously make yourself a target, you will be able to get by without crime affecting your life. Just don't bring a bicycle to campus, it will get stolen.

Great for these types of students

Students who live around Memphis and still want to feel like they went away to college. Also, the nursing program is one of the best in the nation.

    Bang for the buck

I feel like college in general is over priced. But as for as the school goes, it is a state school, so it is cheaper than a private university for sure.

    What to do for fun

Study! Well, if you don't like studying, there are usually events on campus free to students. SAC has movie nights and little recreational sporting events.

    Food and Dining

Slowest food service staff ever! Takes ages to get a Subway, but it could be worse. Most of the food on campus is chain restaurants like Taco Bell, Burger King, Subway, etc.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are older, but good community.

    Academic Rigor

I am currently in the Lowenberg Nursing program and it is one of the hardest things I have ever done in my entire life! Most of the undergraduate programs are hard but not unfairly so. Very good classes. If you come to learn, you will learn all you want!

    Tips for prospective students

    Apply early! Never hurts.

It is a good local University. Offers several really good programs. Is in the heart of Memphis!

Also, during the night, they offer Tiger Patrol which is an escort service to get you back to your dorm room or car safely.

The University of Memphis is one of the many colleges that holds the Divine Nine. This is the nine Non-Pan Greek organizations. Greek life plays an important role at Memphis.

Organizations have events throughout the week such as talent shows, karaoke nights, etc. Also, Greek organizations hold their own weeks during each semester and there is at least one event planned every day of that week.

Memphis offers many food options on campus from the Tiger Den where Chick-Fil-A, Subway, and Fresh Foods are located. The Union holds places such as Burger King and Taco Bell. They also have a fresh salad bar everyday for those who want to eat healthy. While it may be on the expensive side, there are many options.

    Campus Safety

The campus safety has to be the best I have ever experienced. They are very helpful. If you need a ride to your dorm after late night studying at the library they do not mind giving you a lift. Anytime something happens on campus like a robbery or something they are quick and willing to alert the rest of the students to be on the look out and stay safe. The campus safety is very good!

    Greek Life

Greek Life is great! They host many fun parties. The best part is seeing them line dance on the yard a few times during the semester. Seeing this makes everyone want to be apart of greek life but only a few are really up for the commitment. There are many greek life organizations for all students. They do not discriminate against any kind, and they are very welcoming.

    Clubs and Activities

The University Of Memphis has over 200 clubs and organizations ranging from sex, race, ethnicity, and academics. It is a huge variety. Every year on the first day, the university host what is called and involvement fair. All 200 or more organizations set up tables and displays to try to recruit students to join. I joined 3 organizations in which I am still apart. They are for pre-health students because thats my major. The school has a club for every type of student.

Great for these types of students

University Of Memphis is great for students who like to be involved and build great foundations with their peers. The campus is not too big where it is overwhelming, I learned how to navigate my first day of my freshman year. You just have to learn the main buildings and everything else will fall into place. The campus and students make you feel very welcomed to be a student and a Tiger! Go Tigers!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The most unusual place on campus would have to be the grass area in front of the University Center which is located centrally on campus. There is an art project that looks like a random tree. You will never know that it is an art project until you actually walk up to it and observe it. It is actually quite cool when you realize what it is.

    Bang for the buck

During my first year, I attended school on a federal loan. The loan payments are very flexible for college students. I do not have to repay them until all four of my college years are complete. The school does offer very flexible payment plans for those who are paying for their tuition out of pocket.

    What to do for fun

During my freshman year, I loved to go to the Rec center to work out. The admission was free for all University Of Memphis students which was great. The Rec has a weight room, exercise room, three full basketball courts, and three swimming pools. This is a well rounded Recreational center. Not mention you could play badminton, soccer, and other sports. This was the highlight of my year. I am very athletic, and I like to stay some what fit.

    Food and Dining

My experience with dining was great because majority of the restaurants were my favorite. The campus has Taco bell,Chic-Fil-A, a chinese food place,Burger King,a pizza place,Subway, and there very own restaurant called the Tiger Restaurant. These are great places to each which require you to use your dining dollars and flex bucks. With the average meal plan you get a block of meals to use in the Tiger Den,which is just a huge all you can eat buffet for the University. You also receive Dining Dollars and Flex Bucks. You receive 300 dining dollars which can only be used for food at the University. Flex Bucks are dollars that can be used on food or just school supplies at the University bookstore. The meal plans are very flexible and easy to learn.

    Dorm Life

I did not stay on campus this school year, but I was there everyday all day in my best friend's dorm so I did get a little exposure. I learned a lot from what my best friend and her dorm mate went through. In the beginning, everything was great but not so much towards the ending. They started to bump heads a lot. Other than that, there are a lot of great people to make. You meet people who you will know for a lifetime. It is a great learning experience, and great exposure to different types of people.

    Academic Rigor

The coursework is not very hard, it is very time consuming. You will want to start on assignments days before it is due and you can just do a little of the assignment each day. Do not wait until the last minute to type papers. For the most part, if you study, take adequate notes, and listen to your teachers lectures you should be fine. Just pace yourself and take it one day at a time.

    Tips for prospective students

I would say if you decide to live in Richardson Towers, which is one of the oldest dorm complex, you should leave about 15 to 20 minutes earlier in order to give yourself time to get to class. Also, do not take any eight o clock classes unless you are a morning person.

    In three sentences

I would rate University Of Memphis an 8 out a 10 scale. The campus is beautiful for the most part. There are certain places where trash is thrown and no one is there to clean it. The grass is always cut so neatly, and during the fall the lawn staff always keep the leaves raked. The professors and lecturers at the University are great. They are very helpful and flexible. And they actually are very enthused with teaching the students more knowledge.

I would urge any prospective student to fill out and turn in any information that university needs in order to process you into the system as well as school on time.

    Campus Safety

The University of Memphis does it best to keep a safe campus, but criminals are drawn to the University area. However, there is a very good safety alert system to keep students, professors, and parents updated.

    Greek Life

Greek like is big, but not the only thing to do. People don't necessarily look down on you if you're not Greek, but you're almost expected to join a sorority/fraternity.

    Clubs and Activities

Many of the nightlife activities are located very close to campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are always strange people wandering around campus, but I think that is the same for every college campus.

    Bang for the buck

Like I said, it's a good education sometimes you just have to work for it. Working hard makes it feel that much better once you attain the education.

    What to do for fun

There are usually parties and functions that you can attend, even if you are not involved in the Greek system.

    Food and Dining

There are good options, healthy and the normal junk food. I like going to the restaurant because there is always fresh food and vegetables there.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in a dorm so I cannot supply a review.

    Academic Rigor

There are some classes that are extremely challenging and difficult, but others that have no presented a challenge to me.

    Tips for prospective students

    In three sentences

    Campus Safety

The campus itself is VERY safe. Go one to two blocks off campus in a couple of directions and you are in a bad area of Memphis. Go a few blocks in the other direction and you are in a good area of the city. Be VERY careful anytime you go off campus and you will be fine. Campus security and Memphis police work very hard to keep the campus safe.

Great for these types of students

New freshman who live on campus. Returning students who have adult responsibilities

    Bang for the buck

The turion was very reasonable and while textbooks hurt no matter what, they were not out of the reasonable realm for college texts. although if you buy your texts online and then sell them back to the bookstore you usually get almost 75% of what you paid back that way.

    What to do for fun

There are a ton of events offered on campus. All campus theater productions are free to students. There are sporting events, cultural events, and club events as well. Also there is Beal street in downtown Memphis that is clubs and music (for those of you old enough). Memphis also hosts tons of festivals and fairs throughout the year.

    Food and Dining

Lots of different on campus choices during the Fall and Spring semesters as well as few good restaurants in walking distance of campus. Summer semester has extremely limited option and hours for on campus dining.

    Academic Rigor

Most professors want to see academic achievement and are happy to see improvement over first time perfection. While they will not lower the standards, I have yet to meet a professor that isn't willing to help a student as well as a lot of the hard sciences offer a tutor that actually sits in on your class session each day for free. This is VERY helpful.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are planning on living anywhere but ON Campus make sure to check out your prospective neighborhood at many different times of the day and night. Also you have to plan off campus housing VERY early (like the end of spring for fall semester) otherwise you will be in the hood.

    In three sentences

This school is very friendly and the staff is willing to help if you bother to ask. The CARE office is an excellent resource for students dealing with issues or poor grades. The adjunct professors can be hit or miss so make sure to keep an eye on the drop dates and if you don't click with a professor drop the class and sign up for another one immediately.

Here's the inevitable thing living on campus-you wanna see a doctor as emergency happens. And guess what. The doctors in the health center are horrible! I went there three times because of some emergency. They won't do anything for you! They will let you go somewhere else and refuse to treat you by sayingI think it's the best for you! Even if you were bleeding!!!!! I never imagined there could be doctors like this on earth!!!! What's the point of you setting up a health center on campus!! What a joke! And if you tried to persuade them you really needed instant care before going to another place, they simply ignored you and leering you out! I really don't know what to say! Don't even think coming here

Campus Police is on duty 24/7. All over campus there are blue poles and if you ever need any type of emergency assistance all you have to do is press a button. If you are taking a night class, campus police will walk you to your car or dorm. If there is ever an emergency you can opt to receive text updates directly from the campus police that instruct you on what to do. I've lived in Memphis for 18 years and love it. There are parts that are very unsafe, but I promise you that the University of Memphis is in a great part of town, and has a very hardworking police force keeping the university safe.

    Greek Life

I am not in an Greek Organizations. I have a close friend who is an Alpha Pi Delta I think and she loves it! Greek Life is time consuming, but it's worth it. You make friends for life, always have something exciting to do, and a built in support group...

Great for these types of students

If you want a school that is diverse, full of school pride, prepares you for life after college, and wants you to succeed then this is where you need to be. If you love sports-playing or watching- this is where you need to be. If you want a commuter friendly school-this is where you need to be. If you don't care about your grade and just want to party- go somewhere else.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have big Tiger statues ALL over campus and around this part of Memphis. Each one was uniquely hand painted with an original and different design. The University of Memphis has been called five other names, including West Tennessee Normal School. No joke! Einstein's Bagels in the Ned McWherter Library is the best place to get breakfast, and it's slogan is Darn Good Coffee The U of M has a book bound in human skin. For real. I've seen it. It's in the Special Collections part of the library on the fourth floor.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Memphis knows that college is expensive, and tries their best to include a lot of stuff in your tuition. Almost all of the on campus activities are free, or are free with your University ID.

    What to do for fun

On campus there are hundreds of clubs and student organizations you can join. Student government, religious organizations, Greek Life, the Donut Club, the Hunger Games Appreciation Group, and more. There's always some kind of sporting event like a football game or a basketball game- make it a priority to attend at least one!! As a student you get into any events free and there's always a student section so you can sit with your friends and cheer loud and proud for your tigers! The Student Activity Council (SAC) has something weekly or bi-weekly for students to enjoy on campus such as movie nights, game nights, field games, water balloon fights, and more. Off campus, Memphis is known for great food! There's a Topps BBQ, a locally famous Chinese sub shop, Gibson's Donuts, Caf© Eclectic, Cici's, the food court at the Oak Court Mall, a Chilli's, etc. All of which aren't that far from campus.

    Dorm Life

I do not live on campus, I commute from home. I have about a thirty-forty five minute drive every morning depending on how bad traffic is. The University of Memphis is a commuter friendly school and a majority of the students here do commute from somewhere off campus. There are dorms on campus, and even though I have not personally lived in one myself I think they seem very nice.

    Academic Rigor

I'm taking 15 hours and have all As and one C right now. I don't find college work difficult, but I find staying motivated to go to classes and focus to be the hardest part. As you move up into the classes of your major and move past your general education credits, your classes become MUCH harder. I'm an education major and I have to have at least a 2.75 GPA just to get into the program, and a 3.5 to get into the Education Honors Societies. I know from others that the Nursing Major is probably one of the most rigorous, and that the business major is very competitive.

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

Since most people are a little apprehensive about safety on campus, it is Memphis after all, I thought I would answer this as well. The school has a system of Blue lights. They are posted all over campus in the even of an emergency. If you are in a situation and need help you can run up and push the call for help button and police services will be dispatched immediately. Also the poles are recorded 24/7 so anything that happens near them is documented.

    What to do for fun

They have a student committee who plan out tons of events for on campus students. They also have frequent plays and concerts free for students to attend.

    Food and Dining

The campus offers tons of choices. They have everything from taco bell to Einstein's bagels.

    Dorm Life

I have no experience with dorm life other than the tour I took when I first started attending, and I can say I wouldn't enjoy it. Some seemed drab and a few really needed updating.

    Academic Rigor

As I have mentioned, the range of professors is quite diverse. Some classes only offer 3 test during the semester and that is what your grade comes from, while others can offer tons of work with opportunity for extra credit. It all depends on how the professor teaches.

    Tips for prospective students

Ratemyprofessor.com is your friend. Your quality of classroom time is largely dependent on the professors and this school has quite a range; from easily understood to barley speaks English.
