Great for these types of students

If you enjoy diversity, warm-weather, academic challenges, Hurricane athletics, going to amazing clubs and parties, Latin culture, and being able to vacation and study at the same time, you should come to the University of Miami. UM is NOT for you if: You are a Gator or Seminoles fan ;-), you dislike diversity (especially people of Hispanic decent), you don't like tropical climates, you only want to party and not study, if you can't stand being around wealthy people (there are lots at UM), or you want a city with a good alternative music scene (Miami is mostly about Hip Hop and R&B, that's what bothers me the most about UM).

    Tips for prospective students

You really should apply here because even if it wasn't your first choice initially, you may get a financial aid offer that changes your mind. That's what happened to me and I couldn't be happier. When you try to think of the perfect well-rounded school, the University of Miami really is what comes to mind. Um is increasingly becoming an academic powerhouse, not just an athletic one. Oh, and be sure to visit campus, you will fall in love! Don't let Playboy's title of Best Party School of 2009 fool you, we party hard AND study hard! ;-)

    Bang for the buck

Yes, UM is a private school so it is pretty pricey. The great thing about UM, however, is that it is trying very hard to recruit top-notch students, and because of this, it offers GREAT merit scholarships and need-based packages. I know students who turned to Harvard and Yale to come here on full-rides. As for me, it ended up being cheaper than going to a state public school because of my merit award. 75% tuition scholarships are not that hard to come by. If you were in about the top 20% of your high school graduating class, you can expect to pay a lot less than you expected for UM.

    Am enjoying being here

What's not to love about the University of Miami? It's rigorous academically, there is tons of school spirit, the athletics are good, the weather is awesome year-round, the city of Miami is very lively, the campus is stunning, the student body is very diverse, and UM offers lots of extracurricular and career choices for learning outside the classroom. It is also the prefect size. You get the feel of a large university, but still get private attention and small class sizes.

    Am learning a lot

The University of Miami is the perfect well-rounded school. Not many places with strong athletic traditions and vibrant party scenes offer strong academics, but UM is definitely one of them. There are no slack majors here. The professors are all leaders in their field and constantly challenge students with tough work loads. UM is definitely competitive academically and the small class sizes enhance your classroom learning experience. It is a school on rise as far as academics go. Each incoming class is more and more selective.

Great for these types of students

You will like UM if... You are a nerd You want to learn about different cultures You like to learn you like to party you hate the cold you like to tan Truthfully, UM is for any type of student as long as you put effort into your craft.

    Tips for prospective students

UM is not Harvard or MIT but it is a very competitive academically. The student body and staff hold themselves to very high standards. So first and foremost, you need to be about academics if you want to come to my school. Not only that but a robust student. Extracurricular activities are very important.

    Bang for the buck

UM is a private school so it can get expensive. So I can understand if some people are turned off by the price but I have a pretty good financial aid package and they try to help you out financially.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful, I definitely encourage you to visit. There's always something to do either off campus or on campus.

    Am learning a lot

The Cool thing about UM is the diversity of the school and the city of Miami. I've met people from every corner of the country and the world and that's the best part about college, of course learning in class but also learning from those who are not the same as yourself.

Great for these types of students

Students that enjoy small class sizes, and don't want to live in a college town. The University's campus is beautiful and has many activities of its own, but it is also surrounded by a fun-filled and exciting city.

    Tips for prospective students

The essay portion of the application is crucial. Write something that makes you unique and shows that you have potential as a student. Don't be afraid to make it personal, either.

    Bang for the buck

Although the University of Miami is an expensive private school, they provide many scholarships, work study and financial aid opportunities, and the quality of education there is definitely worth the expense.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is beautiful, weather is great, and student services and activities are abundant. It is easy to get involved in things on campus, and there are many student resources that can provide tutoring, health services, help with career planning, and much more.

    Am learning a lot

One of the great things about University of Miami is that they have top-notch professors in every area of study. Also, small class sizes allow students a lot of one-on-one time with professors to enhance the learning experience.

Great for these types of students

This is the most well-rounded school you could possibly find. If you enjoy studying hard, meeting influential people, enjoy Miami nightlife, making great networking skills for the future, then this is the University for you!

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely apply early action if you know this is the school for you! Join the facebook groups, they actually help. Everyone is really friendly and I got to know a couple of people even before I set foot on campus!

    Bang for the buck

Yes, UM is a private school and it can get very expensive at times, but I believe it is worth every penny. You definitely get what you pay for at this University. The financial packages at this school are also one of a kind, they are always trying to help!

    Am enjoying being here

The scene, the people, the beach...everything is breath taking! The campus itself is filled with palm trees and lakes, the people are very friendly and everyone is looking to help each other. The urban location is key, the beach and Miami beach are just minutes away. I believe it's the perfect place for work and play.

    Am learning a lot

The professors here are truly one of a kind! They are doing individual research so they are very in love with learning and helping their students! I don't know of a better university of this level of student-teacher interaction. They are vivid and legendary professors at this University!

Great for these types of students

Students who like to both study and have a good time, or are ok with other people having a good time. You don't have to drink or do drugs to fit in, but be prepared for the people that do. (there are substance free floors for those interested) People who like to do things, get out and explore. Miami is a very active community. Even though we're technically in Coral Gables, its very easy to rent a zipcar for the day and head into South Beach for the day and explore downtown Miami at night. People who like to get involved. There are so many volunteer opportunities here it is unbelievable. Whether its Ghandi day of service or Hurricanes help the hometown, you always have the chance to go out and do some good.

    Tips for prospective students

TURN IN YOUR FAFSA BEFORE THE PRIORITY DATE!!! I believe the priority date is February 1st. If submitted after that it is unlikely that you will receive any financial aid! Bring a raincoat and umbrella! i forgot to do this at the beginning of the year and ended up getting soaked! Rain boots would be nice too. Choose your roommate online. The university allows you to pick your roommate before you come. There are great sites for picking your roommate online (i used uroomsurf.com) Almost everyone on my floor picked their roommates and everyone is very happy with their choice! If your an incoming freshman, pick Hecht! The university also allows you to choose a preference of residential college, and while you may not get you choice i definitely recommend choosing Hecht. Hecht has better amenities (such as elevators that work on a regular basis) and a great view of the lake. Both dorms are great, Hecht is just a little bit more up to date. If you're upperclassmen and looking for a place to live, i suggest looking for apartments outside the school. If you can get into the UV (university village) thats great, but if not living on campus is rather expensive and it might be more economical to live off-campus. Don't think that your going to be able to party all the time. Yes we like to have a good time but we are still a very academic school. And don't be stupid enough to get caught with alcohol in your room. Join clubs and organizations! Maybe you want to stay active and join an inter mural sports, or pick up a new hobby like scuba diving. The possibilities are endless! ( we even have a muggle quidich team!)

    Bang for the buck

I have to admit, this school is quite pricey. Its about $50k a year, but student loans and scholarships have managed to cover most of it. I hear that the school also gives out great financial aid packages, however you have to make sure to turn in your FAFSA early! I made the mistake until waiting until after the priority date and ended up footing the whole bill. I still believe its worth it!

    Am enjoying being here

I love it here! The weather is great and the people are fantastic! (although i must admit it gets quite rainy at the beginning of the school year) There are always places to go and things to do. You can never be bored! The school also provides great ways to stay in shape and avoid the dreaded freshman 15. We have a state of the art gym and two gorgeous pools (indoor and outdoor). The campus is also extremely beautiful, so going for a walk or a jog around the lake is always an option. There is an on campus movie theater, where they frequently show sneak previews or new releases. The school also hosts themed nights where they bring in amazing things for the students to do. My favorite was splash night during orientation, where they had a foam pit, blow-up obstacle course and numerous waterslides. Call me a little kid, but they were fun as anything! there was also an arcade night, where they brought in bumper cars and lazertag. The school also has a lot of concerts, especially the homecoming blowout! As I said before, there are always things to do. I am so glad I chose this school, i can't imagine being this happy anywhere else!

    Am learning a lot

Classes are very in depth. Most of the science classes are large lecture halls, but it is also required that you take a discussion section. This allows for a lot of one on one time with the teachers. Teachers are also very open with their office hours. I highly suggest taking a marine science class if you ever get the chance. (its kinda what we're known for) Marine science labs are also incredibly enjoyable and you learn a LOT. We have the benefit of having our own marina and being so close to beaches and the everglades that we frequently take trips to both. Its so much better than having to sit through early morning lectures. All of my teachers are incredibly knowledgeable and willing to help with any problems you may have. The school also offers tutoring in any subject for free!

Great for these types of students

Great for anyone who enjoys sunshine, relaxation and most importantly, academic challenges.

    Tips for prospective students

The University of Miami...Welcome to the wonderful world of wildlife, sports, nightlife, sunshine, academics and cultural diversity. UM sets high standards for its students and is constantly challenging us. Another good point to mention is the diversity aspect; we come from all over the world...literally. We are represented by the one and only Sebastian Ibis who never fails to get the crowd hype. And once you're apart of this family, there is no doubt that you'll bleed orange and green for life. The pride at the University of Miami runs thick as we support our fellow Hurricanes in all endeavors. So take a dive on the wild side and make sunny Coral Gables, FL and the University of Miami your college destination!

    Bang for the buck

It cost a pretty penny but its worth it. Cappex will help u find scholarships so no need to fear!

    Am enjoying being here

I love it and I'm sure u will too. There's never a dull moment and the people you meet are awesome!

    Am learning a lot

As far as academics go, its a competitive field. So come ready to learn many new and exciting things from top of the line professors, many whom have a number of years experience in the subjects they teach.

Great for these types of students

-Dedicated students who want a school with a smaller to medium-sized population but one that still feels like a large university due to its programs, athletics, and environment -Students that want to have FUN -Students who don't like winter -Students who want an unforgettable college experience that truly prepares them for what lies ahead

    Tips for prospective students

Study hard, play hard. That expression is so easy to accomplish here. On the one hand, you have numerous academic facilities just waiting to answer any question you might have. On the other hand, there's the nightlife of Miami, complete with 18+ clubs so that everyone can be legally included in the fun. Another tip: have fun. It's okay if you don't know what you want to study freshman year. That's what college is supposed to be for!! Explore your interests, figure out what you love and how to make a career out of it. Learn to love to learn.

    Bang for the buck

I understand that UM is a very expensive private school, and I know I wouldn't have been able to come here without a good amount of scholarship. But that is exactly what I have, and, as a matter of fact, more than 75% of the people that I know here are on great scholarship. As for the school's worthiness of its price tag, I would say that it lives up to one's every hope and expectation. and that UM will help you succeed in whatever you want. That's all that one can ask for.

    Am enjoying being here

The atmosphere here is magnificent. An overwhelming majority of the students are incredibly dedicated to their schoolwork and grades, but, at the same time, there is a spirit of wanting to help one another succeed, rather than one of a competitive nature. Additionally, the weather (and campus) here is simply gorgeous.

    Am learning a lot

I am currently seeking a dual degree in Computer Engineering and Psychology, with a double minor in Theatre and Mathematics. THAT is a lot to be studying! But University of Miami really makes it all possible! Here, they want you to study whatever you want, which is one of the major reasons I decided to come to this amazing school.

    Campus Safety

It is very safe. There are blue light posts every where with emergency boxes. There are also patrols during the day and night. All patrols are by licensed police officers not rent a cops. There are also student patrols that go around on segways to help the officers.

    Greek Life

Greek life for guys is great, mostly because fraternities have houses. For girls it's not so great. Sororities do not have houses which for a lot of girls is a deal breaker. The reason for the lack of houses is because of an antiquated tradition, but the sororities still have a presence on campus and are an important part of campus.

    Clubs and Activities

Tons of clubs for everybody, there is literally every club. But if you still don't find one that you like then you can start one. It's really easy to get started and the university even allots funding for your club.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Homecoming week is a huge tradition which comes with a fireworks show, concert, football game, and a parade.

    Bang for the buck

It is really expensive, but if you're a true Cane like me it's all worth it. The classes are very tough and the resources are expansive, but for me the true worth comes in the experience.

    What to do for fun

There's tons of fun stuff to do. From frat parties to university sponsored events. They bring magicians, hypnotists, singers, and many other events to campus. There's also The Grove which is the popular club area that is near campus. The U even offers shuttles over to the area for students without cars.

    Food and Dining

Food on campus is pretty good. The dining halls offer a pretty large variety along with a rotating menu. There are Edy's ice cream machines which are pretty awesome, along with a stir fry station that is pretty good as well. Lines in the dining hall aren't bad except for a few peak hours. Also on campus are several restaurants like subway, starbucks, Ratskeller, Panda Express, Wendy's and a few more. They're all pretty good as well and you can eat at them since the meal plans include dining dollars which are to be used at these on campus restaurants.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are the one thing I dislike about the U. The rooms are small and the bathrooms are horrendous. Overall they are old and run down, but what makes it all worth it are the RA's and AF's. They truly care and are willing to help you in whatever way they can.

    Academic Rigor

It is very tough but doable. Professors expect a lot but they also are very willing to help you.

    Tips for prospective students

Work hard on your SATs and make a great personal statement. The campus is very beautiful and is growing every year. Definitely visit the campus, for most students it is the campus tour that finalizes their decision.

    In three sentences

It's a great school that has a world renowned reputation. It is very tough and not for everyone but the teachers encourage you. Professors teach to expand your mind and to challenge you to think outside of the box.

Focused, seeking challange, small class setting lovers

    Tips for prospective students

Come to Miami, but be prepared to study. Even though all your friends might be going down to Coconut Grove on Thursday nights, you'll probably want to stay home and study. So things you need for UM: $$ and determination.

    Bang for the buck

While the education is really good, the dorms and dining hall could stand to either be improved or have the cost decrease. When I pay x thousands amount of dollars for a meal plan, I expect more than what they serve and I expect a better dorm room for the price they charge.

    Am enjoying being here

I grew up in Miami so I obviously love the city itself, but also on campus there are many things to do depending on the time of year. There's always some sort of organization doing activities on the rock or comedy show going on at the rat. Everyone on campus is really friendly and into being a Miami Hurricane.

    Am learning a lot

The University of Miami provides an intense educational experience, as well as a great sense of school spirit and fun. Academically the courses are challenging, but because you receive the opportunity to have hands on experience early on, the learning process is much more enjoyable. The facilities and equipment used to teach the students are top notch. Because we are a small school, the class sizes are generally small which allow a more intimate teaching environment and your professors are always willing to help you out when you need.

Great for these types of students

The University of Miami is great for students who want to major in: Architecture, Pre-med, all science majors, music majors, political science majors, communication majors (including advertising and public relations), and pre-law majors. This school really has an extensive array of choices. You will always have a colorful palate to choose from here at UM. Also, the school is great for those looking to dip their feet into different cultures. Almost 52% of the kids attending UM are out-of-state kids, and they all come from different countries and backgrounds. This would be a great place to meet different people. If you are into that, then UM is the place to be!

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you explore all your options. While this is a great school, you need to make sure that the prospective major you are choosing is included at UM. Don't come here because you want to see warm weather - you have the rest of your life to see that. Come down to Miami because of the educational opportunities available here. Come down because you know you will receive the best undergraduate/graduate education here. Make your decisions after you visit all your chosen schools and make a decision based on financial need. It is very expensive to attend this school.

    Bang for the buck

Well, this is the one thing that I don't like about UM -- tuition costs. For paying about $54,000 a year, one would assume that they are getting a royal treatment. Sure, the diversity is great, the campus is located in the prime of South Miami, and the classes are great, but the tuition is expensive.

    Am enjoying being here

The weather is nice, being that the school is located in South Florida, and in Miami. The campus is very different from the regular humdrum academia campuses; there are no large brick buildings, many classes are taken outdoors, and there are plenty of palm trees to go around. This campus is really beautiful.

    Am learning a lot

This university offers a lot of different programs for students. They have different fields of study, and have over 200 majors to choose from. With small class sizes, as a student, you really get individualized attention. In the School of Communication, my class sizes are no more than 20 people per class. They also offer many study abroad programs, some venturing to places one would never even dream of going out to. Some of these places include Moscow, Morocco, Israel, Egypt, China, and South Africa. Opportunities are endless here.

The University of Miami is great for all types of students. There is something for everyone at the U.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips for prospective students would be to continue working hard to obtain good grades with which to apply. I would also suggest they visit the University.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Miami is a private school and is therefore more expensive that paying in-state tuition. However, I believe that the opportunities and quality of the courses provided definitely provides bang for the buck.

    Am enjoying being here

I believe that I have found the perfect school for me. I am so happy at the University of Miami.

    Am learning a lot

The University of Miami provides students opportunities to experience all different sorts of classes. Students are provided academic advisors who help them decide which classes they want and need to take, and how those courses will help them toward their goal of graduating. I have learned a tremendous amount in the classes I am taking. However, I have not only learned subject matter. I have also learned about the school and resources the school provides.

Great for these types of students

The University of Miami is great for students who want to enjoy their collegiate years and get an amazing education at the same time. The places in the city are enjoyable, the people are nice, and the teachers provide an excellent opportunity for learning to take place.

    Tips for prospective students

As a tip for prospective students, I would advise that they try to manage time as efficiently as possible because the workload can sometimes prove to be overwhelming if time is mishandled. Also, take good notes during lectures and save them. The notes are useful for future tests as well as exams and may even be useful for classes taken later on.

    Bang for the buck

I paid to come to Miami for several reasons: I wanted to receive a great education, have fun, and find out who I want to become. So far, the process in achieving these goals is progressing smoothly. I have learned a lot, had fun, and am learning about my possible future career in mechanical engineering.

    Am enjoying being here

The people are friendly, the Miami atmosphere is great, and classes are productive so I am definitely enjoying my stay at the University of Miami. All of the professors actually care about students and there are small class sizes so professors are able to help out individual students when needed. Throughout the campus, the people I have met have been friendly and willing to help in any way they can. I have met several people that have become close friends in the past six months. Living in Miami is also a great experience. There are beautiful beaches and many fun places to hang out at.

    Am learning a lot

At the University of Miami, I have learned an incredible amount. The professors are dedicated to providing the best possible opportunity to learn. Also, by living in the dorm I have learned many of the necessary tools for survival in the real world.

UMiami is great for any student. The population is so diverse so everyone is able to fit in nicely.

    Tips for prospective students

Join clubs or organizations! It's such an easy and fun way to make new friends while doing something you enjoy.

    Bang for the buck

Although the tuition may seem a bit pricey, it's 100% worth it. The variety of classes, the experience of professors, and the overall life at UMiami make students feel comfortable. The school really prepares students for the real world during and after college, and assists in as many ways as possible to help them transition.

    Am enjoying being here

There is no better place than UMiami. People are extremely friendly and always ready to have a good time. There are so many activities on campus, and off, to fill extra time. Students truly care about the sports teams too, so heading to a football or basketball game is a great way to meet new people and cheer on the Canes.

    Am learning a lot

There is wide variety of classes that students can take. Even if you already know what major you intend to study, the opportunity to take classes outside that specific study is always available. The professors genuinely care for each student and are always willing to help with questions or concerns.

Great for these types of students

Athletic/health oriented students will fit in great here! Most of the student population works out everyday and are fit. Outgoing students will make many friends and will be happy with the diverse group of people they will get to meet. Open-minded people because with diversity comes different points of view on certain topics.

    Tips for prospective students

Ask your professor if he/she will want you to buy the book that's on the syllabus. Sometimes they will say It's optional so if you don't want the book/have the money to buy it don't. Then once you know what books you need to buy, buy them from Book Horizons (across the street from campus). Trust me this will save you some money.

    Bang for the buck

Yes, the school is expensive but there are many scholarships to help with that including scholarships the University provides. UM also offers many research opportunities and provides students with a lot of ways to entertain themselves. And even if there's nothing going on on campus (rarely happens) the friends you'll make here will be more than enough entertainment.

    Am enjoying being here

The beautiful weather and even prettier campus, not to mention all of the great people you will meet here! This university did a great job at recruiting a diverse student body. Also, there's always something to do either on or off campus. Some students who like extracurricular activities will enjoy the seemingly endless supply the campus provides. If there is a club you want that isn't on campus yet, then you can start it (it's easier than it sounds). Off campus there's parties, clubs, book fairs, malls and restaurants. The U even provides a free shuttle that takes students to CVS, Publix (a supermarket), and a mall every weekend.

    Am learning a lot

The professors here are great! All of my professors were more than willing to see students during office hours if they needed help. The students here are serious about their education as well and it's a common site to see students studying in groups and alone. Students help classmates with their questions as much as they can.

It is an expensive university, but it's worth the pay.

Even some of the introductory classes are harder than high school classes. If you're in the honors program, you will be challenged by the honors classes, but if you aren't, the second level classes (especially in science) are very challenging.

Great for these types of students

For motivated, serious students who can handle the speed of a city.

    Tips for prospective students

Take advantage of everything Miami has to offer. It is a large metropolitan area, which gives you opportunities that small college towns may not, both recreational, educational, and professional.

    Bang for the buck

You can't get more exciting than Miami. But UM provides a productive learning environment for those who seek it. I have found the most amazing mix of everything that I could ever have wanted in a college. While it is expensive, they award amazing scholarships to deserving applicants.

    Am enjoying being here

At about 10,000 undergraduate students, UM isn't overwhelmingly large or suffocatingly small. It's the perfect size for me. I'm also in love with Coral Gables. It's not right in big-city Miami, but it's close enough to downtown, Key Biscayne, and South Beach while still getting the security of a high-end community. I am so happy here!

    Am learning a lot

I really appreciate that the professors take a personal interest in their students, since the class sizes are smaller than average. I just finished my freshman year, and I've already had three classes smaller than 18 students. UM has a vigorous course load, but you are given the resources to work at your full potential.

Great for these types of students

UM is great for well-rounded students. The school really pushes you to be more than a number, more than a GPA, more than your grades, but it also pushes for high academic achievement. If you want the best of both worlds, plus Miami sunshine, UM is the place for you!

    Tips for prospective students

I would definitely recommend taking a wide range of classes your first semesters to figure out what you would like to narrow your focus down to. I took classes with professors that inspired me to major in an area I had never even considered studying before! I would also recommend spending a lot of time around campus, particularly if you are going to live off-campus as I do. The more time you spend there, the more it feels like home, the more people you meet, and the more experiences you're open to. Also, take advantage of everything! I'm still finding out about services, clubs, etc that I could have been using and participating in, but simply never discovered!

    Bang for the buck

Let's be perfectly honest, the University of Miami is expensive, but you definitely get what you pay for! I cannot praise the small class sizes enough. I've already had 2 classes with under 10 students, some of the most wonderful learning experiences I've ever had. Furthermore, the professors are wonderful, the buildings are beautiful, and there are so many resources on campus that students don't even realize they could be using!

    Am enjoying being here

The University has so much to offer in terms of student activities it almost depresses me, because I know it's not physically possible to be a part of every one!! If you've got an interest in some particular field or activity, there's a club somewhere with a spot waiting for you! That's what makes the University so enjoyable! Another plus: the general atmosphere. UM is in Miami which means lots of sun! You can feel that summer energy in the air, an especially unique sensation in November when most Universities are experiencing snow days! There are so many spots around UM to relax, study, and simply enjoy the scenery. Students are busy, but one look up at the blue sky and bright sun brings a feeling of peace and relaxation to any day.

    Am learning a lot

The University of Miami offers a wonderfully wide range of classes across various disciplines which presents students with quite a challenge: choosing the right classes! Regardless of which class you choose, you'll be learning so much valuable information. I've gone into classes with a very low expectation and come out with loads of knowledge. Another plus: class sizes are mostly small which allows for quality student-teacher and student-student interaction. Knowledge is the strongest weapon in your arsenal. You can trust UM to arm you well!

Great for students who know what they want to do in life and where they want to do! :)

    Tips for prospective students

Just look for a college that suits you, not the one that everyone around you wants to attend. UM enrolls only a select amount of students yearly, according to the seminar I attended this summer.

    Bang for the buck

It is alot of money, unfortunately. But to have the good things in life one has to be willing to pay the price or look for scholarships or grants to get to the best college for you!

    Will enjoy being here

It was so beautiful past WORDS! and the school spirit is obviously there!

    Will learn a lot

i cannot wait to attend this school, many of the people who i know who are past alumni rave about UM all the time, my dream major is broadcasting and communications and honestly UM has a great ratio from teacher to students so its a very nice learning environment!

ANY. Miami offers a broad range of classes and any type of student can feel welcomed here.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the school! You will get a feel if it is for you. Start planning out your goals and ideas for your future now. Students who not only succeed academically in classes, but who also begin planning their futures and actively supporting their goals outside of class, become very successful and make a huge difference in their lives and others. Grades only do so much in a student's life. Side note: the dorms here are not the best however it is still a fun and great experience living on campus with college students that are like you!

    Bang for the buck

Worth every penny. Although the University of Miami is a private school ( thus expensive), the U offers many academic scholarships and financial aid packages. Many students don't realize that so much money is out there in scholarships. If you have the drive to attend this nationally ranked (#38) university, you will find a way to pay for the expenses. You might have to obtain a job or spend time applying to scholarships, but it is worth the education and experience that you will be obtaining.

    Am enjoying being here

On campus, the University of Miami has many clubs to get involved with. Every day there are students actively engaging in activities whether they are fundraising for charitable events, attending a yoga class on the green in front of the library, out supporting their greek life, buying locally grown produce at the weekly farmers market on campus, or studying at the university's outside pool. It is beautiful out almost every day of the year and students enjoy walking to class and catching up with friends( campus is small enough that students can get to know many of the other students that attend the University of Miami). Off campus activities contribute to a lot of the excitement that students experience as well. From the nightlife/beach of South Beach to the shops/bars/movies of Coconut Grove, and to the Heat games/museums/parks/art shows of Downtown Miami, students are offered many opportunities that other students do not have. If students want experiences outside of Greek life, University of Miami is for you!

    Am learning a lot

As an undergraduate pre-med student, the University of Miami has provided me all the resources to get into med school and become a successful, experienced, and educated doctor. As a college freshman I had already began working at a job at the University of Miami's Research/Chemistry Laboratory, which allowed me to have a hands-on approach to learning Chemistry. In addition to the excellent University of Miami Arts and Science school, we have a national ranked Business school, a state of the art Architecture school, and an incredible Music school. Classes are challenging, but students succeed in them, and professors are always available to talk. Most importantly, it is the unique environment of UM ( campus and off campus) that contributes to our learning.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who wants a great education, mixed with job security, insanely fun student life, and a beautiful campus will find a home at UM.

    Tips for prospective students

I highly recommend attending UM's orientation program Great Start. Not only was it a really fun experience that ignited lasting friendships, but it also gives incoming students valuable insight into the workings of the school and how to be the least stressed/most productive 'Cane possible. Also, keep up with hurricane productions and their calendar of events, since they are always a blast.

    Bang for the buck

Although receiving an education from UM can cost a pretty penny, I would not change my choice for all the money in the world. The course load, and success in teaching it, is unmatched. More than a top-notch education, hurricanes glean the prestige of graduating from this wonderful institution, which can be a huge bonus on job applications.

    Am enjoying being here

Student life at UM is a constant flurry of excitement. Hurricane Productions keeps the student body flooded with activities from fund-raisers to foam parties. The athletic events are where a true feel for the school pride and unity can be found; singing the alma mater before and after every football game (win or lose) is awesome.

    Am learning a lot

I have never been more challenged to learn, than here at the University of Miami. Besides the abundance of knowledge the faculty has to offer, not to mention the vested interest they take in your education, I am constantly met with new and interesting ways to learn the material at hand. I have yet to have a single professor that wasn't well versed in his/her field, and they are always willing to meet with you and offer supplemental support.

Energetic, eccentric, fun, hard working, leaders, talented, achievers, dedicated, well rounded individuals.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply to many scholarships, if you are eligible for FAFSA dont procrastinate and fill it out! UM is great with grants and extra money for those students who are in a financial struggle. Tips: For those who are in the Communication field, Natieska is the best advisor in the School of Communications at UM. Dont hesitate in making an appointment with her.

    Bang for the buck

Its expensive, I am not going to lie. Tuition is a lot and for many its a financial drain. But with loans and scholarships it is not that bad. Financial aid packages are amazing, UM is very generous with the financing. Its a private school at the end of the day.

    Will enjoy being here

Beautiful campus, great energy, never boring.

Since UM is a private school, I've seen a lot of rich kids wasting time with their parents' money. But to be honest, UM is very academically sound and if you are a hard working student who puts everything into their studies, your time and money will be worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

Studies come first, in my opinion. I've learned a lot in the classroom and have grown a lot just from the classes I've taken. Explore everything, take all the electives you can. If you think it possible, take on an extra class. And whatever your field/ major, find clubs and organizations related to it. (As well as anything else that tickles your fancy, you'll really enjoy yourself.)

    Bang for the buck

UM is not cheap. I work very hard to pay for school. Financial aid helps as much as possible, but private school is really (and kind of ridiculously) expensive. I didn't want to take on any student loans for fear of debt , but the best option for me was to take on the loans offered by the government because they have the lowest interest rates. Keep in mind, I love my school, but it's a bittersweet thing when the bill comes.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is huge and green! There is always somewhere nice and shady to sit or there is cool AC in the student center. All sorts of students on campus, very diverse with loads and loads or organizations to join. UM also has a lot of resources available for students when it comes to advising and career planning, tutoring and student help and a huge alumni network.

    Am learning a lot

First year students are usually thrown into all of those introductory classes to get certain requirements out of the way, but in taking those classes, I actually learned A LOT. Most of the professors I've had have been exceptional and really know (and enjoy) what they teach. Studying is a must if you want to pass with a good grade, but I found my classes and overall learning experience of my first year to be very rewarding.

    - Hard workers. If you want to do well at UM, work hard to stay on top. Especially if you are paying that large amount of tuition. - Partiers. If you like to have fun - this is your school. Just manage your time wisely. - International lovers. UM and Miami itself is a melting pot of all kinds of cultures, from Latino to European to Asian. You will meet people from all over the world and broaden your mind.

    Tips for prospective students

-Be prepared for heat and humidity. Although I prefer warm weather, Miami's summer months are disgusting and the rain in the fall just adds to the humidity. However, the winter and spring are wonderful and you will find yourself wearing shorts in the middle of January. - Get a job. Although most things at UM are free to students (all fees are covered in your tuition), the city of Miami is not. If you have a car, be prepared to pay for parking everywhere you go. If you eat out, try to avoid expensive places around South Beach. If you are a guy, be prepared to pay cover charge at the clubs (ladies are lucky because they are free most of the time). However, the price is worth the fun in the end. - Learn a little bit of Spanish. Its Miami - aka Latin America. EVERYONE speaks Spanish. You will get by just fine if you don't speak Spanish but many places to dance and eat have Spanish speaking only staff so it may help if you learn where is the bathroom or may i have the check please in Spanish. I loved this aspect of Miami because I felt like I was studying abroad in a different country, while still being in the US.

    Bang for the buck

I would be lying if I said that UM was not an expensive school. However, they are great in rewarding scholarships and financial aid and it was the amount of aid I received that allowed me to come here. Even so, the quality of education you receive here is worth it. UM was ranked recently as #47 in the nation and #1 in Florida. The professors all know their stuff and most have come from working professionally in the fields that they are teaching.

    Am enjoying being here

Although you have to work hard here, you get to play hard as well. Miami is a great city for entertainment and there is always something to do, from going to the beach with friends, going out dancing/partying at night, to just catching a movie at Sunset Place across the street from UM. UM also provides entertainment through high energy football games, free carnivals and concerts (such as Wiz Khalifa and Lauren Hill), and any fun things you find around campus from a cute farmer's market to professional salsa dancers.

    Am learning a lot

To be accepted at UM, you already have to have a willing to learn and be challenged because you will be continued to be challenged and learn a lot at UM. As a communication major, I am required to have a second major, which is something that I may not have done for myself. I am glad that UM pushes me to expand my education and make me the best student possible.

Great for these types of students

Great school for basically any type of student. We cover it all here at UM.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved in a sport or club right away! It's the quickest way to make friends and immerse youself in the UM spirit. (And boy do we have spirit!) Also, take advantage of the school-wide events. If you're going to have your parents pay that much money for you to attend, then make sure you make the most of it! We have huge concerts and plays and tournaments and a whole lot of awesome things that really shape your experience. (And they are ALWAYS giving away free stuff in the main hub, who doesn't like freebees?)

    Bang for the buck

However, it's not all rainbow and sunshine. The biggest downfall is the price. UM is a private university which roughly translates as mucho dinero $$$$. Still, there are generous school-supplied scholarships to many eligible students that comes with your acceptance letter. If you decide to live on campus, its another big chunk of money, and depending on which dorm you apply for you may or may not be living in a sardine can. For commuters, parking permits will cost you about $400 a pop, and the parking lot at 8am can quickly turn vicious.

    Am enjoying being here

Beautiful campus, in regards to landscape anyway(because the buildings are not always architectual beauties). While all my friends up north are complaining about snow and freezing to death, I'm chilling in shorts and a tank top in December. Who can beat that? As far as school spirit? It runs rampant. 'Canes go all out when it comes to supporting the U, and I'm not talking just about football games! There's a HUGE choice of clubs and organizations to become a part of and plenty events on or nearby campus to give anyone an active social life. (it IS miami afterall)

    Am learning a lot

This is a very well rounded university. Great Arts and Science programs, diverse Humanity courses, top-notch Engineering school. Great level of support for students that don't know what they want to declare as their major too. Majorly small class sizes, unless you have a science lecture class, and I am pretty happy with the quality of the professors.

Great for these types of students

Due to the international essence of the city of Miami, this university is the perfect place for students with a global perspective, a passion for world cultures and building awareness of the world around them. This is a great place to meet international students from almost any country in the world, and anyone interested in studying abroad, as the opportunities here just keep expanding. Also good for people who don't want to live in that college town setting. A city like Miami just has so much more to offer to the student body. This place is really great for any type of student since you can find just about anything that interests you here. It's a diverse and dynamic city.

    Tips for prospective students

The most important tip I would give to any prospective student is to not discard the possibility of attending UM just because of the cost. Attending UM has always been a dream of mine, but I had never even thought coming here was a possibility because of the cost of tuition. The fact is, UM gives generous academic scholarships to students who achieve highly on SAT's and ACT's, a lot of Financial Aid is given by the government to those who need assistance, and there are tons of outside scholarships that can help you cover the cost of attendance. The point: don't give up. If you really want it, go for it. The opportunities are endless and by working hard you can make things happen.

    Bang for the buck

It's undoubtedly true that the University of Miami is an expensive school to attend, but it's worth it. The amount of resources that are available here are unbelievable, and faculty and staff do just about everything to ensure student's success at this university. It is up to YOU to take advantage of everything the school has to offer. The Launch Pad is a great tool for prospective entrepreneurs. They help students with innovative ideas launch their businesses from the ground up. Toppel Career Center is always having expos, career fairs, and workshops with topics like improving your resume, building interview skills, and getting internships. UM also has such a presence in the city of Miami that many companies with headquarters here come specifically to UM to search for student interns, so the opportunities are endless. I am just a freshman and already have job opportunities and internship interviews lined up, so it just shows that the opportunity is there, you just have to take advantage of it.

    Am enjoying being here

The University of Miami has such an amazing atmosphere. The campus is gorgeous and there is so much greenery and natural beauty. When the cold fronts start coming in late November the temperature is just perfect and it's a great time to sit at the tables outside or lay out on the green and study. There is always something going on around campus, whether it's a Ludacris concert, guest speakers like Condoleezza Rice, or UM Alumni coming to share their success stories and give current students inspiration and suggestions. Being here is a truly enriching experience. There are so many ways to get involved, expand your network, and have fun. The night life isn't necessarily what people from other parts of the country expect. People hear so much about Miami nightlife and expect on campus life here to be a constant party- but if you are a male under 21 years of age you’re pretty limited, don’t expect to go party at South Beach every night. Overall, this is a great place to be, with so many beautiful places to discover and so many cultural activities to experience.

    Am learning a lot

The professors are all highly qualified, but like anywhere else, they vary in teaching style, so make sure you ask other students about professors before choosing classes to make sure you choose someone that suits your learning style. Professors are always willing to help students and make sure you genuinely understand any material being covered. They are all experts in their field and have had past experience in the subjects they are teaching, so they can speak from firsthand knowledge and give relevant examples and applications of topics being discussed during the lectures. It's just such a different atmosphere from high school, where you don't know why or how certain things apply to the real world or to your future. Here, the professors teach in a manner that makes everything relevant and applicable, and you truly see the value in what you are learning.

Great for these types of students

Great for students that enjoy clubbing.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is an awesome lake that is the center of campus geographically and socially, the lake serves to remind us of the unique ecosystems which all coexist in south Florida.

    Food and Dining

The food was quite good and inexpensive, meal plans are very useful if you live on campus.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life was incredibly fun for two years and afterwards most of the student body chooses to seek off campus housing.

    Academic Rigor

I have never truly felt challenged or out of my league at the University of Miami. The English department barely achieved the levels of what I consider a basic academic discussion. The math and science departments have some exceptional teachers.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should be aware that there is little to no campus social activity and that public transportation in Miami is next to non-existent. They should research the specific program they are interested in because each program is hit or miss.

    In three sentences

The ambient and city surrounding UM contribute a completely unique cultural experience the likes of which are cannot be found any where else in the world. The academic environment is lackluster, and those seeking a truly rigorous scholastic curriculum should not consider UM one of their primary choices. University of Miami is a university with a lot to offer but requires that students be diligent and completely independent in the process of finding their passion.

Great for these types of students

This is a great school for: -People who love football -People who love the beach and nice weather -People who like to party -People who like to focus on Academics and research -People who want to go to a prestigious school

    Tips for prospective students

Tips would be to really consider what you want to study and be sure, although it is a great school and lots of fun, it is expensive and you do not want to be wasting time trying to decide what major best suits you. My suggestion is go and visit the campus if you have the opportunity and sit in the classrooms so you can observe how the things are before you sign up. Also, study hard and maintain a high GPA and SAT scores it could make a difference as to how much money you earn. If I would have gotten a higher SAT score I could have been awarded $600. It may seem like a little but if you multiple it by four years that $2400 that I am going to have to pay that I didn't have to if I had done better.

    Bang for the buck

The school is a bit on the expensive side. Considering that it is a private institution it is not as expensive as other schools but is considerably expensive. There are a lot of scholarship opportunities and work study applications. I am a music student and received a music scholarship that really helps and also academic scholarships. The rest I get in loans and work with the school. The work studies at this school are really good you will be earning higher than minimum wage and have very flexible schedules that won't interfere with your whole UM experience.

    Am enjoying being here

The school has so many events that if you think you are bored then you are unaware of what is going on. Aside from the night life and college part atmosphere there are a lot of planned activities sponsored by the school. Homecoming is amazing with fireworks and floats, Canes Carnival during the spring involves a full carnival with free food and games, live concerts every Thursday, as well as multiple performances in the Frost School of Music ranked on of the highest music schools in the nation, and so much more. Sports: UM is one of the better football teams in the Eastern ACC we haven't been the top shape recently but we just got a new coach and are hoping to change that. This school is fun, I never want to graduate!

    Am learning a lot

What was once referred to as Sun Tan U has really kicked up its academics and is not ranked number 47 in the nation as one of the top universities. The academics is a big focus in this school as well as the athletics. Great for these types of students

It is not a friendly school. The people at UM aren't mean necessarily, they are either preoccupied as in too much into school or rather snobbish northerners. If you enjoy parties this is a great school but don't expect to just party as academics are also a must. It is hard to meet others in class because it seems like everyone is doing there own thing and you have to make an effort to get to know people. It is a preppy school. Not everyone is good looking but there are quite a few that are of both sexes and both tend to wear little to no clothing.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay in the dorms for a semester or just the first year. It is expensive and small but the experience is really great. You have fun and convenience along with a great opportunity to meet people for relationships. Also look up professors before just choosing them and ask upper class men about there experiences. Prepare for a harder time than high school. Time management is key most students find the material not too much harder but that there is so much at the same time that it becomes overwhelming.

    Bang for the buck

It is an expensive school and becoming more and more expensive as the years go by. I mean in part you do get what you pay for but some teachers could be replaced for a better experience. It has a ton of extracurricular activities and is in a prime piece of real estate being in Miami. The dorms are tiny to say the least but do provide a place to meet new students. UM provides many opportunities to advance in whichever field you are interested in, for example business students have plenty of internships before they begin there career and have many companies who already hire you straight out. Pre-med is a tough call as everyone wants to be a doctor but most find the sciences too difficult compared with high school. On the other hand if you can handle the rigors presented and can complete the MCAT then they offer great guidance to Med school. With the rough economy it doesn't always benefit to come to this school without a scholarship or previous credits.

    Am enjoying being here

I am enjoying the school. I have lost some of the school spirit ever since the hurricanes poor season but I also met my girl friend here. Most freshman and sophomores tend to hookup while the juniors and seniors are usually in more committed relationships. The activities and Miami life are both great around campus. If you have nothing to do around campus it is because you haven't looked around. Also great weather all year.

    Am learning a lot

Being a private school makes this a faculty rich, well versed and trained environment of both teachers and staff alike. I am not going to say all of the classes and teachers here are great. Everyone says the physics department is horrendous because it is ridiculously hard but most students just end up bringing in credits from another accredited university. The learning itself is fantastic; like all schools the better the teacher the better you'll learn but most often than not if you put in the effort you'll learn what you need and moreso. It isn't easy though as most teachers especially in the early science classes have the difficulty of teaching 200+ students and the pace is therefore accelerated. That only lasts for the first year or so where they are termed weed-out classes without truly intending to be so.

You don't hear about a lot of problems. Most things are standard anywhere like petty theft or car accidents. It's Coral Gables, pretty much safe as can be.

    Greek Life

Doesn't dominate the social scene. You can be as involved as you want, or GDI (G** Da** Independent). Most people have more fun exploring Miami... SOUTH BEACH BABY.

    Clubs and Activities

There's a club for everything, if you don't find any, its easy to network and make your own.

    All types.

    Bang for the buck

Its very expensive, I won't lie, but most people are so happy with their choices. Financial Aid is usually pretty generous, and lots of well-paying jobs on campus.

    What to do for fun

Coconut Grove, Brickell Avenue, Dowtown, Frat houses, South Beach, ULTRA... need I go on?

    Food and Dining

Chartwells runs the food on campus, the Dining halls by the dorms have great breakfast and lots of options, very friendly to ALL eating types.

CANE FEST allows students to find out about different activities and programs to be involved in. It is a great atmosphere for making friends and getting to know people.

    What to do for fun

Movies on Wednesday on campus, BBQ, Miami Beach, the Grove, clubs, sports, and FOOTBALL GAMES!! GO CANES!

    Food and Dining

There are dinning halls available for students as well as a Cane food court. People really enjoy the variety and all of this comes with the meal plan that the student buys when getting a dorm.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a very intersting aspect of the university. There is a very good percentage of students that can afford dorms and are out of state students. These students always complain about the bathroom space and trying to live with the person they chose to be roomates with. However, some benefits of living in a dorm is being able to connect with your class, make friends faster, participate in all of the on campus activities as well as off campus activities. The University has activities for people that dorm here and life is great.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Miami places itself as the top academic institution in the state of Florida and number 38 in the nation. Therefore, it is important to understand the the university will make sure you stay on task and focus.

    Tips for prospective students

Really focus on your SAT, ACT, as well as AP examinations because these are really important in terms of placing out of introductory classes. Placing out of introductory classes will allow you to save money and finish school earlier. Finally, don't spend 100 dollars or more on a calculator. It will be a waste of your money as the university believes in allowing the student to truly know the mathematical concepts and rely very little on a calculator.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is composed of a spirited student body that strives for success. The diversity seen on campus allows you to truly meet people from all over the world. Finally, with the location of the campus near an important world location I am really luck to be part of the University of Miami.

    Campus Safety

Incredible safe-police and help everywhere with a late night shuttle service

    Greek Life

Greek Life is dominant if you want it to be-the house regulations are strict so parties usually aren't in the houses but they have tons of off campus events at close by houses.

    Clubs and Activities

Every single club you could imagine is active on campus. I am newly in entrepreneurship club but have considered sailing club.

Great for these types of students

Social, New Yorker (hah), party-active, ambitious (sometimes)

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The gliders all around campus are tables with benches that swing back and forth-they also have covers. People always hang around campus in those and at the Rat. The Rathskeller is the on campus restaurant that serves beer and as been a part of UMiami since it began. People begin pregaming Grove Thursdays there in the middle of the day.

    Bang for the buck

Miami offers great scholarship and financial aid if you qualify though if you do not, it is just as expensive as about any other private school.

    What to do for fun

The Grove on Tuesdays and Thursdays is a regular bar/clubbish area that people love to go to. Wednesday nights is often LIV in SouthBeach as is Saturday nights. Off campus frat parties are usually Friday nights.

    Food and Dining

The food court is pretty good but the dining halls serve poor quality food. People get veryyy sick of it.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are very social and well located but are incredibly disgusting-be prepared for allergies and the accumulation of everything less-than-preferable inhabiting your space.

    Academic Rigor

Solely depends on which courses you are taking...the seven year medical program is incredibly intensive as is engineering. Again, it depends what you choose to endeavor while here.

    Tips for prospective students

Ensure that you do love to go out to extent while still cramming an excessive amount of work in when you can-this isn't Duke but many students are very serious about what they are doing here.

    In three sentences

The University has a great campus with an absolutely thriving social life that is sometimes exclusive to those who have access to the greater nightlife Miami has to offer. The student groups may be cliquey sometimes but just as with any place one is able to find the right people if they search in all the right places. It has a great daily environment with multiple common areas that make it easy to navigate through the day without having to resort to going back to a dorm or apartment as a home base.

Extremely cautious campus, there are call phones everywhere on campus so you never feel alone. You can walk back to your dorm at 4AM and still feel safe, because if you pick up a call phone or call a police officer, they'll come to you in less than 2 minutes.

    Greek Life

    Awesome Greek Life!

    Clubs and Activities

Ample amount of options. Over 300.

Great for these types of students

UM is perfect for all types of students, unless you don't want a happy, fun, awesome college experience.

    Bang for the buck

The price is high, but you can see where all the money goes, which is comforting. You have free tutoring services in any subject you take, the professors are always helpful to students, you have free interview practice services, free internship matching services, and free access to the huge and awesome gym on campus. Also you get free tickets to all the games, free transportation to the games, free tickets when Lupe Fiasco or Ludacris come to campus, free tickets when Mitt Romney or President Barack Obama comes to campus (which happened twice in 4 months). Of course none of this is free, because it's included in your tuition, but it's all worth it!!

    What to do for fun

There's so much to do for fun every day! Fun doesn't only include partying, which of course there is a lot of. There are around 300 clubs and organizations you can join, and everyone is very warm and welcoming anywhere you go. Even on your floor or in your dorm building, there's always something planned that you can join in on.

    Food and Dining

The food is okay, but luckily you won't get bored. If you're on a meal plan, you'll eat at the Dining Halls most of the time, which have a million options for you to choose from every day. You also get dining dollars that you can spend anywhere on campus, like Wendy's, Panda Express, Starbucks, Jamba Juice, etc...

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is wonderful! The freshman dorms are nice, and the on-campus living just gets better as you get older. There are RAs everywhere to help you with anything, and there are even AFs (Academic Fellows) who live with you and always have open doors for any of your academic worries.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor of UM is really based on what you make of it. If you're going into the sciences, be prepared to work hard for your grade. The professors here are proud to be working at an elite university, so they make sure you know everything you possibly need to know about their subject. Whatever you're looking for academically, you'll be able to find support groups and help everywhere you look!

    Tips for prospective students

It's very important to know what kind of college you want in making your decision. University of Miami attracts so many different types of students, so you most definitely won't ever have a problem fitting in. The cultural, academic, and social diversity here is mind-boggling and exciting. Without even trying, ou will learn something totally new almost every single day.

    In three sentences

University of Miami is an extremely wonderful school, with a plethora of opportunities for students. I love the atmosphere of the school and the city surrounding it. There is never a dull moment, and almost anything you want to accomplish can be achieved here.

There is also a fence that surrounds the campus to prevent people from sneaking on. I always feel safe when I have to walk across campus by myself.

    Greek Life

There are thirteen different Greek organizations. Some are better than others.

    Clubs and Activities

There are more than 200 on-campus organizations that students can join. There are options on options on options. The problem is not what to join, but what not to join.

Anybody looking to further their education. The campus is so diverse that everybody can fit in.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter at every home football game, Miami players and fans can be seen holding up four fingers. The sign indicates their belief that a game is won in that crucial final period. True Hurricane fans and players use the sign as a symbol that they own that last quarter. Lilâ?? Joe was a forerunner to the present Touchdown Tommy cannon fired by the Sigma Chi fraternity after each UM score. He's really loud. :D Legend as it that if you step on the seal located outside of the bookstore you will not graduate. There is a giant U located in the middle of campus. If you touch the U before a big test or event it will bring you luck. The Rathskeller is a restaurant on campus. The food is great and it does not cost a lot of money. It is called the Rat for short.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Miami is a private university so it is expensive. However, there are so many amenities for students and the campus is beautiful so it is worth every penny.

    What to do for fun

There are a ton of activities that you can do on campus. For example, the last day of class Hurricane Productions put on a Winter Wonderland where they covered the Foote Green with snow for a giant snowball fight. The Ring Theater always has a show going on and on Tuesday's students can get in for free. There are also the clubs in Coconut Grove. I tend to avoid these because I do not party. I enjoyed the on campus activities more. :)

    Food and Dining

The dining hall is surprisingly not that bad. There are a lot of options and most of the food actually tastes good. There are healthy, vegetarian, vegan options for those that do not wish to gain the freshman fifteen. There are also a lot of on campus restaurants like Wendy's and the Rathskeller. There is also Starbucks where I live. :D

    Dorm Life

It really depends on which dorm you're in. I live in Hecht and it is like one giant family. The R.A.'s are not out to get you. They act more like siblings. They are always there to help you with anything you need and answer you're questions. The bathrooms are kept pretty clean. The rooms are not bad either. There are two people to a room and there is enough room for both. They're are also singles available. I have a single and I love it. It is smaller than a double but I have my own space which I love.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are challenging but not overly difficult. If you study, take good notes, and keep up with readings you will do fine.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are unsure, take a tour of the campus. It helped me. Do not wait until the last minute to try to find financial aid. The campus seems huge but there are tons of shortcuts on campus so it does not take very long to get around. There's a Starbucks right by the library and they are putting another one in. :)

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is an amazing college. The campus is so diverse and there are countless of opportunities to get involved. It is also a beautiful and peaceful campus.

    Campus Safety

I feel comfortable running around campus late at night, and there are plenty of measures in place to keep students safe, such as the University's own police force. Not to mention we're in Coral Gables, which is a safe suburb to begin with.

    Greek Life

You can definitely have a good time without going Greek, and if you do go Greek it's still easy to maintain a life apart from the system. Greek presence is really only noticeable at two points in the year - the beginning of fall semester, when the freshmen have nowhere else to party, and the middle of spring semester, when Greek Week happens.

    Clubs and Activities

It took me a while to find my footing on campus, but once I did I realized the scores of opportunities available! There's student government, Orientation, student media (such as the yearbook and newspaper), television, intramurals, and more! The leadership options are endless, and I have met a ton of amazing, talented people through my heavy involvement in clubs and activities on campus. It can be tough to find time for it all, but I wouldn't have it any other way!

Great for these types of students

Open-minded, studious (yes, you will have to work!), and friendly!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Sportsfest is a fun campus-wide tradition! You don't need to be athletic to participate, it's all about having a good time - and winning that trophy back from Stanford ;) During Homecoming week we burn a boat on the lake - if the mast falls before the boat sinks, we are supposed to win against the opposing team at the Homecoming football game! We also have a registered arboretum on campus that is stunning.

    Bang for the buck

As long as you're here on a scholarship (I can't imagine paying full freight - here or anywhere!), it's more than worth it! Living in Miami is an unforgettable experience that, if you are the right fit, is more than worth it.

    What to do for fun

Aside from the typical frat parties, clubs, and school-sponsored events, there's a free cinema on campus and access to tons of unique facilities such as sand volleyball courts! The residential colleges offer programming activities to engage students with the city - I've been to famous landmarks, concerts, plays, and museums for free just by making use of the options available! You can't actually say you're bored here, you'd have to be doing something wrong.

    Food and Dining

Charty's is bearable, and there enough other options to keep your culinary palate fairly entertained. The Mahoney-Pearson dining hall has just been completely redone, and the freshmen dining is going to follow soon. The surrounding areas around campus offer a myriad of options as well, so one cannot complain of being bored!

    Dorm Life

Better than I expected, of course it's not perfect (never take showers at peak hours, you will not get hot water...) but you shouldn't be spending all your time in the dorms anyway! The community itself is great, especially in the freshmen dorms. In the upperclassmen dorms getting to know people can be more difficult because no one leaves their doors open like they do in the freshmen dorms, but there's also lots more programming activities to help residents explore the city.

    Academic Rigor

Each major has its own set of challenges; obviously science majors may have more of a workload than others, but as a whole there are no such things as easy As. The professors are the best in their fields, and only some science labs are taught by TAs.

    Tips for prospective students

Every year there are more applications and applicants keep getting more competitive. Apply early, highlight what makes you unique, and good luck!

    In three sentences

    What to do for fun

explore miami's nightlife! the possibilities are endless. there's south beach, coconut grove, clubs, music, dining, etc. miami has enough variety to have everyone find something that they will enjoy. pertaining to the school, become involved in clubs and organizations! they too, are specific for each individual's interests.

    Food and Dining

the school has its meal plans for residents with food that, from my knowledge, is not the healthiest or most sanitary. however, there are several on-campus dining locations that are superb including the rathskeller restaurant, a food court that includes wendy's, panda express, and salsaritas, a food market, a small grocery store, and a subways, to name a few. there is also transportation to local places such as publix.

    Dorm Life

personally, i am a commuter. however, from what i've seen, they're not too spacious but serve their function. find a way to make it your own by decorating the white walls and you'll be sure to call your floor mates family soon enough.

    Academic Rigor

the university of miami is ranked 38th in the nation. the professors are demanding and the students in courses with you are extremely intelligent. come ready to learn and ready to study.

    Tips for prospective students

come with an open mind to meet all kinds of people from all backgrounds, but with the mentality that education is the first priority. leave your sweaters but bring rain boots. make sure to have high sat/act scores, a challenging high school curriculum with adequate grades, and to be involved in meaningful extra-curricular activities.

    In three sentences

the university of miami is a great school with a diverse student body as well as academics. it has resources and opportunities, good weather, and includes people who both work hard and party hard.

There are campus police set up so that they're not stifling, but they're there if you need them to be. There is also an alert system set up so that if anything happens, they email, or text you (or nothing if you change your preferences). They also have an escort system to go with you to any place during the night.

    Greek Life

Greek like is bursting! There are so many different Sororities and Fraternities for everything. There are volunteer, social, and professional sororities and frats. You can even join more than one!

    Clubs and Activities

The variety and availability of clubs are endless. Not only that, but the dorms always have something set up. Just last week they offered snorkeling. Over spring break they went midnight kayaking and made smores. The clubs vary just as much too. There is anything from Surfing club, to Asian club, to Quidditch team!

Great for these types of students

I am a music student, and I love it. There are other students here who care about music and are so talented, and you learn so much.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The theater on campus is one of the first black box theaters ever built in Florida!

    Bang for the buck

As expensive as Miami is, you get so many free things. The yearbook is free and a lot of free shirts and food are available. And the music program is worth every penny.

    What to do for fun

There are a variety of clubs to go party at night! Most are 18+ and 21+. There are always things set up right on campus. There are concerts by the music students. There is also the Rat located right on campus. They have Patio Jams every week. Sunset Place is a great place to shop, there is a bowling alley there too! Also Dadeland is another place to shop. There are tons of places to eat! House parties happen all of the time on campus and off-campus. You can take the metro to get to places. South Beach is great! The surf and sand is really relaxing! There are many clubs along there too. Coco walk is another great place to go! Cheesecake factory is there! (Delicious!)

    Food and Dining

The selection is pretty wide when you first attend here, but after a while the food gets old and really tiring. The dessert cakes are always dry. But there is a venue just for vegetarians, and they mark everything as vegetarian, vegan, etc. They also have a food court which has a wide variety of enjoyable foods like Panda Express, Jamba Juice, Wendy's, and many more.

    Dorm Life

I love my dorm. My floormates are fantastic, the RAs, AFs, and Dorm masters really care about you and help you with anything. Floor meetings are set up if anyone is unhappy with the general living conditions. We decorate the floor, Pocahontas theme this semester! We also leave notes for each other in the bathroom or on each others doors. It's a nice community. Bathrooms are cleaned daily.

    Academic Rigor

It's pretty intense for me. I am a music student so I am not taking as many 'academic' classes, but I am still stressed. My friends are always studying intensely for their Bio and Chem tests (which I am not required to take) or writing papers (I have stayed up late finishing these) or doing a project!

    Tips for prospective students

Get a high SAT score! It seems stressful going to college at first, but after getting the hang of things, it's really fun! The biggest tip when applying is just to keep your grades up and get a high SAT score! After you get here, make sure you attend classes and keep your grades up here too! The average GPA here is 3.5!

    In three sentences

University of Miami has a fantastic music program that I've learned so much from in my first year here. The academics are also pretty great and the teachers are available whenever you need them. And the social scene around Miami is huge so whenever you have spare time you're always having fun!

    Food and Dining

The food in the dining hall gets very boring and repetitive. The food court on campus has some good options, but the hours are terrible. The school has been doing a lot with bringing food trucks on campus during the day to increase options. Also, there's rumor that the contract for the current company in the dining halls expires this year and we may have better food next year.

    Dorm Life

All freshmen are required to live on campus in two strictly freshman dorms. It's a great way to meet other people, but the dorms are like prisons. Other dorms on campus are suite-style so students share a bathroom with 3 other people in most cases. The University Village, apartments for upperclassmen, are really nice.

    Academic Rigor

The classes can be challenging, but the professors are great and always available to help.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is great, we have emergency phones all through campus if anything ever happens but in my two years there I haven't witnessed anything dangerous. UPolice sends out email and phone calls when anything suspicious has occurred.

    Clubs and Activities

There's clubs and activities for everyone! If you find that there isn't one for something you like, Student Activity Center is welcome to help you start one. Most times it just takes a petition with enough people to want to start a club. You'll be amazed how many people have the same interests as you.

    What to do for fun

Relax, we have a pool in the middle of campus where you can swim or take up some sun. If you don't like water, the Green in front of the library provides a comfortable place to nap or throw a frisbee with friends. Make sure to take advantage of the bus that takes you to and from the Grove, one of Miami's most popular places for college students.

    Food and Dining

The food court is limited but diverse. Currently we have Mexican, Greek, Chinese, and Cuban stands as well as a Wendy's, Sushi Maki, Jamba Juice and a Salad bar. We also have The Rat, our bar on campus which provides great burgers, fries and sundaes! All in all, most cravings can be met.

    Dorm Life

Commuting from home, I've had limited experience with dorm life but enough to know its benefits. Being a relatively small campus, waking up 15 minutes before class is no problem. Everyone leaves their doors open so you're going to meet your whole floor eventually. It's helpful because most of the times they'll be in your major or be interested in the same things you are so you can all connect.

    Academic Rigor

Ranked in the top 50 by USU Today, we are the number one school in the state of Florida and have proved it thanks to our academic rigor. Although not true for every teacher, most teachers care for their students and know that this is a gateway to their students' careers and futures so even though they're going to push you to your limit, they won't let you fall.

    Tips for prospective students

Meet new people. I met most of my friends during orientation. Although some of my friends from high school came to The U, I made a whole new group of friends while still sticking to my old ones. The people that you meet will all be different and have something to offer and they will become your family.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is a family. When you come into The U, you might not know anyone, or your whole high school could have come with you, either way, you're going to come out of here with the most memorable experiences of your life, academically and socially. A school with students aiming for perfection, it provides an academic rigor to challenge you and make you think so that you can relax on South Beach on the weekends.

    Campus Safety

UM has a great police department who helps people walking back to their cars at night and assist with serious situations. They even send out email alerts to let students and faculty know that there may be a potential problem. Can't complain about the security.

    Greek Life

Not involved in greek life, but it does not take over campus life. If you want to be a part of it, then it's there. Otherwise, it'll be fun to guess who has joined a fraternity/sorority after freshman year.

    Clubs and Activities

There hundreds of clubs and activities to choose from. With everything from salsa dancing to random acts of kindness, there is something for everyone. No shortage of extracurriculars at UM!

Great for these types of students

UM is large enough that you will not see the same people, but small enough that you'll run into great people. This also happens with academics and professional development. With some many resources, take time to look for them and find the ones that most interest you and what you plan to do after graduation. There is usually something for each major or field.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

UM has an awesome arboretum near the Physics building that makes for a great study or meditation spot.

    Bang for the buck

UM is a bit expensive, but if you make the most out of your education and utilize the school's resources, then you'll get the bang for your buck. Look for research, internships, and take pride in your education. UM will do the rest.

    What to do for fun

Miami is the South's playground with beaches, the wild nightlife, and bar scene. But the city also has excellent cultural events, concerts, and international dining options. If you are willing to leave campus and explore, then Miami can provide a city with the comforts of a suburban campus like UM.

    Food and Dining

Dining is fine, but nothing special. There is an all-purpose food court and two residential dining halls. They serve a good variety, but I have heard of residents getting bored with the food. It depends on your diet, I suppose.

    Dorm Life

While I commute, I have heard the freshman dorms provide a nice social experience to get to know all the other students in the class. Upperclassmen dorms are nice, and students from seniors to sophomores mingle in each floor.

    Academic Rigor

Rigor is a relative term because it depends on the department and class. However, most professors expect students to give most of their effort and want nothing less than the student's best.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be swayed by the location because UM is serious campus that is academically growing into a research and educational powerhouse. Students have fun, but most are serious and work hard to achieve their goals.

    In three sentences

UM offers an exceptional undergraduate experience that values teaching and research opportunities. Students across all majors can excel with great professors who understand and love their field. And there is nothing like studying under the Florida sun.

All in all the campus is a great place to just hangout and relax when your not worried about classes.

    Food and Dining

    Campus Safety

Contrary to what some people may believe, Campus is extremely safe. UM has its own police officers (UMPD), which are a branch of the Coral Gables police department. They also have the blue-light system, with many blue light posts are located around campus. If you feel distressed for some reason because someone may be following you or something of the sort, you can press the button on the light and UMPD will be at the scene within about 20 seconds. Also, each dormitory has a 3-step check-in process to keep residents safe. I have never had a moment in which I have felt unsafe on campus and neither has anyone I know. The University really makes an effort to keep everyone informed and make sure that no one feels unsafe.

    Greek Life

Greek Life at UM is very different from how it is at other schools. It is a lot more laid-back, yet everyone still gets extremely involved on campus. Only 20% of campus is currently Greek, but 80% of all leadership positions on campus are held by Greeks. That simply goes to show that they want to make the most of their college experience and truly make a difference in their community. The Greek community is very tight-knit, and everyone who is a part of it really enjoys it.

    Clubs and Activities

There are an incredible amount of clubs and activities for students to get involved in. They are service-oriented, career-oriented, heritage-oriented, and pretty much anything else. And if there is not any club or activity that you like, it is very easy to start your own.

Great for these types of students

The University of Miami is great for any type of students. There is such a wide array of academic programs and they are all truly great. I know students in pretty much every school within the university and they are all happy. Additionally, the student organizations further enhance the diversity of the school and make sure that it tends to any type of student.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Most of the traditions of the university are seen during football season and homecoming week. At the end of each football game, we sing the Alma Mater and wave our right hands in the air like the swaying palm trees. During homecoming, we have a boat-burning ceremony which predicts the fate of our homecoming football game, along with a beautiful firework display. These are just some of the many traditions that the university has.

    Bang for the buck

While the price tag for a private school education at UM may initially be a bit scary, every student truly gets a lot for this money. The faculty is incredible, and they teach invaluable lessons, both in and out of the classroom. Additionally, there are infinite opportunities for hands-on early-on experiences here that truly make the money worthwhile.

    What to do for fun

There is always something fun going on throughout campus, whether it is a free movie on the green, an organization-sponsored pool party, or a fun 'Canes Carnival with food and rides. Additionally, the University of Miami is also close to many beautiful beaches where you can spend the day at. There are also lots of shopping malls near the area like Sunset Place where you can go to the movies, grab a bite to eat, or go shopping. Coconut Grove offers a similar scene, along with some nightlife as well for people who are of age.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls at the university are actually much better than one would expect. They serve a variety of different foods during the week, and they usually taste very good. They also have vegetarian/vegan options, along with sandwich, grill, and stir-fry stations that are always there, leaving one with good back-up options in case the main dish does not taste that great. Other dining options like the food court are absolutely fantastic. We have a Jamba Juice, Sushi Maki, Panda Express, along with Mexican, Greek, Cuban, and salad options. There is also a fully-functional Starbucks conveniently located right across from the library that stays open relatively late. The university has great dining options in my opinion.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at the University of Miami is great. Freshmen are separated into their own residential colleges, which allow them to really get to know each other. Those dorms are co-ed by floor, so there are floors of all girls followed by floors of all boys. Each floor has a Resident's Assistant, who plans fun events and helps out with pretty much anything on the floor, and an Academic Fellow which can assist you with any academic question or issue you may have. In the upperclassman dorms, the floors are co-ed, and they do not have Academic Fellows, but they do still have Resident Assistants. Possibly my favorite part is that every dorm offers free laundry. It is extremely convenient that I do not have to gather quarters often so that I can clean my clothing. I think dorm life at UM is pretty great. The roommate-match process works very well, and the dorms are comfortable and clean.

    Academic Rigor

The courses at this university certainly challenge students. It is absolutely necessary to study, attend class, and take notes so that you can excel in each course that you take. In my opinion, the academic rigor is just right, because it challenges the students, but with hard work and dedication, it is possible to earn your desired grade in the course.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! Wherever you go, your college experience is only as good as you can make it, so get as involved as you can. UM has an infinite amount of student organizations that you can join and eventually obtain leadership positions in. Becoming a part of student organizations will really enhance your college experience. Step out of your comfort zone! That makes it so much easier to get to know new people or do things you may not have otherwise done, and it allows you to grow as a person. In short, take advantage of every opportunity you can, study hard, enjoy the good company of your peers, and make the most of the four years you have at UM.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is a fantastic institution to spend four years of your life at. You meet wonderful people, make great connections, and learn so many new things, all in the beautiful setting of Miami, Florida. Attending The U is without a doubt a decision that anyone should be proud of.

I am not a big fan of Greek Life. Our school has I believe 13 frats and 7 sororities but Greek life is not huge on campus because there are other ways to get involved. I have friends who are currently in Greek life and they have changed majorly and in such a short time but the choice is up to you.

    What to do for fun

Campus is in such a great location. If you just feel like doing some clothes shopping, grabbing something to eat like Buffalo Wild Wings, RA Sushi, outback or Carrabas, or even watching a movie then Sunset Place is for you. If you'd like to go more mall intensive with your shopping then Dadeland is a good stop. If you want to have fun on the weekends, the Grove is the local hangout from Central Beer Garden, El sitio, Baracuddas, and even Sand Bar. Definitely the hot spots. You could even catch a taxi to LIV or Amnesia or Mekka but we like our Grove.

    Food and Dining

Oh chart wells.. Their food is pretty average but their menu rotates every month or so so you'll get sick of the food guaranteed by second semester of your freshman year. Luckily campus offers other options such as the food court and the rat for variety.

    Dorm Life

I'm not going to lie the dorms are not that great. They are tiny but eventually you get used to it. Aside from the size, dorm life is pretty much amazing. I can say I've had the most memorable experiences just hanging out with different people in the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

UM does find a way to challenge students but it is very doable. The professors do this to motivate their students and they are more than willing to help their students during office hours. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. After all they will write your recommendation letters one day! :)

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students definitely need to learn how to manage their time wisely. College is a lot different than high school in that you'll have more free time but also more work. You'll be tempted to go out and party but please save this until you complete all your work. Don't throw all your hard work away!

    In three sentences

The University of Miami provides students with an experience unlike any other. The student body is so diverse that you'll feel as if you fit in anywhere you go. Better yet the campus offers many organizations for a student to get involved in, which makes their academic experience memorable.

There is a police department that is part of the school. I do not remember hearing of any incidents involving students occurring on campus, just off campus.

    Greek Life

Big at this campus, but I was not involved.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs and organizations that you can get involved with, from Greek life to academic involvement to career development to just having fun. There are also a ton of activities off campus too.

Great for these types of students

Great for any kind of student. All students apply. If you want to have the best experience of you're life, you will get that plus more at UM. UM has a population that includes people from every inch of the globe, so you will fit in perfectly and enjoy every moment of it, no matter what you're interests are.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Greek life exists on this campus and they always have initiation ceremonies and task going on. The president and other political figures stop by once in a while to make speeches and visit the university too.

    Bang for the buck

I would recommend UM to anyone. They only downside is how the price keeps going up. I understand its a private university where you can attain a world class education pretty much on par with elite ivy league schools, but why does it have to continue going up and up and up. The experience I am receiving here I would not trade for anything else. Also, if you are looking to go to law school, med school, engineering, business, or any other top academic program that you can think of, it is most likely here and it is worth every penny once you move out into you're career and make something out of yourself. Take advantage of every opportunity offered to you.

    What to do for fun

Whatever you like to do, you will be able to do it, or at lease the the summer version of it of course since winter does not exist for too long. You like to shop, Miami is fashion central. You like to stay fit, sports, athletics, and staying in shape are easily accessible, from a world class gym on campus, to fitness buffs and the fashion/model scene all over the place where people take their images and their bodies seriously. You like to go the beach, not only are there internationally known beaches here but once you visit these beaches, you wouldn't want to go anywhere else. Miami is a melting pot consisting of people from all over the world. As a result, we experience the cultures and customs of everyone from all over the world. And of course, if you like to stay in all day, you can do that too, but I recommend going out and enjoy life to the fullest.

    Food and Dining

On campus, there are two dining halls, a cafeteria with a various of well known businesses like Wendy's, Jamba Juice, and Starbucks, and The Rat. The Rat is like a sports bar, but you can still go there if you're under age, just no alcohol for you. You can watch the game, play pool, get something to eat, or socialize with you're friends at The Rat. Off campus, you can find whatever you're stomach desires. Whether you like traditional meals or want to try something new, you get that plus a whole lot more. Worldwide cuisine is just a step outside campus, not literally a step.

    Dorm Life

Best memories of your college life, aside from academics of course. I did not live on campus, I can only comment on my experiences from visiting my friends who lived on campus. For some of my friends, it seemed a little cramped, four concrete walls and sharing a room with three other people, while others lived in the apartments and university village, which did not seem so cramped because they had multiple bedrooms. There is always something to do, whether to get together for homework/projects, club/organization, or go out to the mall, beach, club/party at night.

    Academic Rigor

Almost every student at UM is motivated to excel academically and achieve high grades. The courses are not a cake walk. It takes a lot of effort, time, and hard work to maintain excellent grades. Discipline and motivation are some of the keys to success. Everyone has their own motivations, but most of the students at UM know that they have an opportunity to achieve a great career with a UM degree, so they thrive on doing well. UM is regarded as a excellent institution and a lot of employers and others universities recognize UM in this regard.

    Tips for prospective students

Fill out all your financial aid appropriately and on time (FAFSA and scholarship apps, both outside and department aid) and follow up with the financial aid department with required documentation, if necessary. Enjoy your time at UM and get out of you're dorm by meeting new people, going to the events on campus (especially the sporting events and the homecoming concert), joining an organization or club, going to the gym and staying in shape, or traveling around Miami and south Florida to get a feel for what this place has to offer. When you're ready, make an effort to expand you career by visiting the Toppel career center and apply to internships/job opportunities for experience and try to get involved in research and departmental projects.

    In three sentences

UM is the best of all worlds. Academics, excellence, and acceptance is what they are all about. Not only do you get the prestigious education that you came here for, you get a whole more including the opportunity to meet people from all over the world while being accepted no matter who you are.

They have a variety of healthy choices and fast food if that's what you like more like Wendys, Jamba Juice, Sushi, Panda Express. Tons of options!

    Dorm Life

The dorms are eh, it's better to living off campus with friends.

    Academic Rigor

As long as you study and don't cram you should be fine, students here love to have a good time but when it comes to finals and exams they know how to put that aside.

    Tips for prospective students

The University of Miami is great for people that want to meet hot girls or that wanna have a social life. 8 out of 10 girls here are good looking.

For people that commute, there is something called the UC (University Center). There is a room upstairs in this building that has sofas, and a T.V, and you can sleep in there. Its amazing! I live very far away from school, and since sometimes I get sleepy, I just go there and knock out.

    What to do for fun

UM is in Miami, very close to south beach. I really don't have to answer this question... but if I must, there is movies, clubs, bars, , beaches, bowling allies, coffee shops, and everything that you can possibly need to have fun. everything is in access because of the train and buses.

    Food and Dining

The food court is amazing. It has all that you need, from Chinese to Mexican to Greek to American.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorms, I commute. However, I have heard that they are really small, but comfortable. The people that live in the dorms are very nice, I met some of them in classes.

    Academic Rigor

Since I came in with many credits, I started to do my career courses right away. This higher level courses have not been so bad in the sense that they have not drowned my in hours of book swimming, I dedicate around an hour per course every week, and when midterms and finals come, I dedicate around two to four, depending on the subject, to study for exams for each class.

    Tips for prospective students

Find scholarships that will help you pay for this school. If you do not find the money to pay at least 75 percent of the school tuition, do not come. UM is not a Harvard, so it is really not worth paying so much for it.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is a great school full of diversity. The campus is beautiful and full of life, since it's full of all kinds of plants. The professors that I have gotten so far have been excellent, and all of them have enforced their subject in someway or another in real life. The only downside of the school is that is very expensive.

Coral Gables is a pretty quiet and safe place. I've never felt unsafe on or very close to campus but there are neighborhoods to stay away from, like Grand Ave and behind the Red Road apartments.

    Greek Life

I'm Greek and most of my friends are Greek. That being said, Greek life is relatively small but growing. Give it a shot and maybe you'll like it! There are a ton of opportunities for Greeks not available to other students but it doesn't have to consume you.

    Clubs and Activities

We have so many clubs for pretty much everything you can imagine: volunteering, scuba, kiteboarding, books, writing, doodling, anime, acting, singing, salsa dancing. It's crazy.

Great for these types of students

    Bang for the buck

UM is private. It's expensive for sure. But take one look at the place and you know you're getting a great experience for the money. The professors are mostly good and you get a lot of once in a life time chances. It's a beautiful and clean campus.

    Food and Dining

It's convenient but expensive, not very good and gets repetitive.

    Dorm Life

It's pretty crazy freshman year. There are always people around and there are a ton of things to do.

    Academic Rigor

It's pretty intense, especially if you're taking a difficult major.

    Greek Life

Often, Greek Life is a concern for many parents. While Greek life at the U is small, its impact is prevalent. It promotes a studious environment, while enabling friendship and everlasting memories. Not to mention Sports Fest, which is a huge week of sporting contests among the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Seriously you gotta be a Seminole to not have fun.

    Food and Dining

Awesome, just learn the times they serve lunch so you get it before everyone else.

    Dorm Life

Things could be better. If you're freshmen try to get Hecht if you're a stickler for shiny new things. Choose stanford if you're a time-oriented person. Social life is great no matter where you stay! Participate in sports-fest!

    Academic Rigor

    It's hard man study everyday.

    Tips for prospective students

Come here if you want to succeed! Education is a brand that's worth showing off that's why it keeps getting expensive! Who do you show it off to? People you network with! UM has a great networking system for students either through the thousands of different student organizations or through Toppel Career Center. Get access to job fairs specifically for students of the U! Whatever you have to do to come here, do it!

    In three sentences

UM is a great school for anyone who enjoys being in a diversified area under one bright sun that shines everyday. Don't be fooled by any facade that claims the U is a party-only school; academics is serious stuff and the pressure is real. Work hard, play harder.

Such a great school to learn what you need to succeed. It has many helpful resources and many crazy distractions as well. I would give it a 9 out of ten for ratings because the distractions sometimes cause a procrastination factor.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is first and foremost a money making machine as are all colleges especially private colleges. That being said, it is easily the best possible option to embark on a college career. While their is almost guranteed to be an academic struggle as a freshman, it will be well worth it in the long run.

Great for these types of students

Students that like a more urban atmosphere.

    What to do for fun

Many places to hang out in Coral Gables. Sunset Strip, Coconut Grove, and there is always things to do in Miami. The beach is not too far although it does take some traveling. Football games are amazing, and there are a lot of recreational sports for students on campus as well.

    Food and Dining

Dining seems pretty standard for any university meaning scrict meal plans and the food does get repetitive. Definitely not a highlight but not worse than what you'll get at other places as well.

    Dorm Life

Freshman dorms aren't large but in my experience, everyone seemed happy. Dorms are very social and everyone seems to have some of their closest friends from the dorms. Many students move off-campus after freshman year.

    Academic Rigor

It is what you make it. Some people have it really easy while others have very challending schedules. There is a lot of flexibility in choosing classs.

    Tips for prospective students

Admissions seems to care about GPA and SAT/ACT scores more than most schools. Other things still help but the numbers seemed to be the most important.

    In three sentences

The University has one of the best atmospheres of any university. You get all the opportunities of a big city, (jobs, social) and a secluded, beautiful campus with great weather. Great all around university and I would highly recommend considering it.

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for everything! We even have a really awesome Quidditch team. (Seriously, we're second in the country!) I'm a part of the field hockey club, Random Acts of Kindness, United Black Students, and others as well. If you want to start a club, it's not that hard. But I promise, you'll be involved in something.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of things to do on or off campus. The great thing about UM is that all of the athletic games are free, so you don't have to worry about not seeing a game because you don't have any money. Also, Miami Beach is only 20 minutes away, plus Coconut Grove is a great place to spend the day. You can always get involved in a club, Greek life, or an even a play if you want to try something different. South Beach has great clubs, but a lot of times they are 21+, so you have to wait for when they do 18+ nights.

    Food and Dining

You don't always have to eat at the cafeteria if you don't want to, which is true at any college. At UM, you have a certain amount of Cane dollars, depending on your meal plan. With these, you can buy food at Subways, Starbucks or a food cart. Also, a lot of restaurants are within walking distance of the U.

    Dorm Life

Sure the dorm rooms are small, but they will be on most campuses, especially for freshman. However, at UM, you can loft your bed, which is really just making it like a bunk bed, but you don't have a bottom bed. This way, you can have more room for clothes, a couch, or even a TV if you really wanted too. Once you become a sophomore, you can live off campus or live in Mahoney, Pearson, or Eaton residential colleges. They have bigger rooms and you share a bathroom with only 3 people. You can also live in a single at those three residential colleges.

    Tips for prospective students

When you write your application essay, make sure it is genuine and reflects something important to you. For example, I wrote about my younger brother as the person who has most influenced my life because it's true. Don't just write something cliche; the application readers will skip over you quickly if you do that.

    In three sentences

The most amazing place on Earth! Seriously, I love it here; it has great weather, amazing professors and cool classes. I have made the best friendships here and I promise you that the campus is GORGEOUS!

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of different activities and clubs! From quidditch (yes the Harry Potter sport) to ICC ( gospel choir) to water boarding!

Great for these types of students

Out-going, or someone who wants to step out of their shell and experience different people.

    Bang for the buck

UM is very very expensive because it is a private university. Most state schools can offer the same education experience, although without the same diversity. If your classes are cancelled because of finances, it is a rough process to get funds from UM. The tuition has gone up in price over the past 5 years from $45,000 to about $60,000.

    What to do for fun

The metro rail station is right across the street from campus, so the mall plaza Sunset is a quick ride. They have restaurants and a movie theater. The school also offers shuttle service to Coconut Grove where there are more shops, clubs and bars. The beach is a 10 minute ride away!

    Food and Dining

The cafeterias have a wide variety of foods to choose from; from a grill to a stir fry section to a large salad bar. The food court ranges in food from Wendy's, to Panda Express to a salad bar and sushi.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at UM are very old. The University Village, on campus apartments are more up to date, yet still not very spacious. Pack very light when moving into a dorm and try to stay organized. Freshmen dorms have a variety of floor activities so dorm mates get to know each other. Participate!

    Academic Rigor

Depending on what school you are in, or what your major is, academic rigor rates a 3 to a 4. Professors expect for you to act responsible for assignments and performances on exams. Studying is a major part of academic success here!

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved! There are so many different opportunities to volunteer and explore your field of interest gaining contacts who you can network with in your professional future. While being involved in campus organizations, stay focused on your curriculum and do not skip class.

    In three sentences

UM is a very diverse university, having students and professors from all over the globe. The town Coral Gables itself, would not be considered a college town, but everything you would need is on campus or a short walk away. Academically, UM is ranked among the top universities in Florida.

    Campus Safety

Inside campus it is very safe. Even around campus it is decent. South Miami isn't very safe and there have been people who have been threatened at gun point. You just have to know where to go and what time to go there. It is the same in every city.

    Greek Life

Decent. The sororities don't have houses which isn't nice. But we have suites so it is do able. The Greek Life isn't that awesome because of so many outside forms of entertainment like South Beach and Downtown and Coconut Grove.

    Clubs and Activities

Greek Life and the community service opportunities are plenty.

Great for these types of students

The ones who want to learn how to study and party at the same time. Basically people who want to be something in life by studying where necessary. And people who want to have fun.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Hammocks during finals. Late night dining. Food for all the drunk and high people in the nights. The amazing football games.

    Bang for the buck

I would say so. If you use all the facilities that UM provides you with.

    What to do for fun

SOUTH BEACH. :) Oh and study when finals are around so your parents don't feel like they are wasting their money.

    Food and Dining

HORRIBLE FOOD. the food court has bad timings so you rely on what you can cook and the places to eat outside. The dining hall is okay. I mean it makes you put on a lot of weight. The timings are weird too.

    Dorm Life

Soo.. the dorms suck. So does the food. But isn't that the case with every college? The social life is amazing so your roommate is normally your best friend. Miami attracts only a certain type of people. So if you are accepted and you are seriously considering going then it means that when you reach Miami, you're going to find tons of people like you!

    Academic Rigor

UM will MAKE you work. They look like this nice Florida school but they mean business! So don't take it lightly.

    Tips for prospective students

Apply here! And choose UM! You will have an undergrad degree to remember. It is a little pricey but they give amazing scholarships so if you have a good GPA and a good application then you are good. The college life is great! Everyone is excessively good looking and smart. The perfect package. I don't know one nerd or one bimbo. There is no distinction in social life because everyone is basically the same! I am not even joking.

    In three sentences

A fun place to do your bachelors! UM is a school of school spirit, friendship and hardcore academics. We may have one of the best campuses in the country with a lake and everything, and we may just be miles from South Beach but we concentrate on education a lot. A lot of people come here thinking it will be easy when they realize that it isn't.

    Campus Safety

The University of Miami is on the forefront of security for its students. There are policemen and security traveling through and around campus at all hours of the day and night, as well as 'blue light' phones throughout campus that connect to the police station on campus. The university provides students with great tools to stay safe while being so far from home, like a HurryCane shuttle that goes to Coconut Grove on Thursday and Friday nights, and other shuttles that go to popular places like the mall and grocery store, eliminating the need to walk where it may not be the safest.

    Greek Life

Although Greek life is just under 20% on the university's population, it is rapidly increasing from a mere 13% just a few years ago. A new sorority is coming to campus in 2014 and the expansion for the fraternities is coming even sooner. It is a great way to make a moderately large city/campus seem a little smaller. It helped me to meet a great group of people who I could rely on when I barely knew anyone just weeks before joining. Inter-sorority and inter-fraternity relationships are extraordinary at my school, eliminating the hostility that other campuses might experience between Greeks. It was the best decision I have ever made.

Great for these types of students

Hard-working, balanced students who are able to separate the time for partying and for studying. Most students have money from their parents that never seems to end, so if you don't come from that type of family, it helps to have a 'work-hard' attitude in order to keep up.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Rathskeller, or The Rat to the students, is the only on-campus restaurant at the University of Miami. Although there is an indoor seating area, the gliders (tables with benches attached that glide) outside are always packed with students getting lunch, doing homework together, or just hanging out between classes. It is directly at the center of campus and is definitely the most social place to be.

    Bang for the buck

The school is extremely expensive, hence applying for scholarships, but it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you cannot find at any other school. The staff, academics, campus, and surrounding area are just a few things that make it the best place on earth.

    What to do for fun

The bar and club scene in Coral Gables and Miami is unmatched by any other school. There is something to do every night of the week. If you don't drink or prefer not to some nights, there are plenty of malls, movie theaters, comedy clubs, and other things that schools in a different type of location may not be able to offer.

    Food and Dining

Even though people always complain about the dining hall, it is really not bad at all. The food is pretty good quality as long as you know what to avoid (and there are definitely some things to avoid). Overall though, it is a great place to socialize and hang out between classes.

    Dorm Life

You have a lot of freedom in the dorms, although some call it jail with the cinderblock walls. They do their best to make them homey, though, and the resident assistants are truly there to help you any way possible.

    Academic Rigor

The academics are incredible at the University of Miami. Donna Shalala has truly pushed her students to achieve everything they are capable of, drastically increasing the academic integrity of the university. With that, the work expected of the students has become very intense.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to meet a lot of people from the same type of area you grew up in. There is a lot of diversity on campus, but people stick to what they are comfortable with. There are a lot of different types of people, but individual groups of friends are usually from the same general area of the country and social status.

Getting into Miami, especially as an out of state student, looks really good because it is a prestigious and respected school that is on the rise. A little pricey, but then again, it's a private school.

    What to do for fun

South beach, the Grove (thirsty thursday bar scene), Brickell (more bars), downtown Miami (clubbing), Lincoln drive (dining and shopping), frat parties, house parties, beach, pool; you will NEVER not have something to do

    Food and Dining

Dining hall could be A LOT better, but the surrounding area has GREAT and food and a lot of variety.

    Dorm Life

Good for meeting people, but dorms are dorms and they get small and cramped living with the same person for a year.

    Academic Rigor

As long as you put the work in, you will get the grades.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't get caught up in the partying, stay responsible. Don't let your health fall to the wayside, try to eat semi- healthy and go to the gym. Get involved in the community and take advantage of the great area that you are in.

    Campus Safety

UM is a very safe campus. There are blue light phones placed throughout the campus in case you have an emergency. If you are walking around campus late at night, you can call for a police escort to walk you around. The university also offers self-defense classes in the event that you want to learn to defend yourself.

    Greek Life

Approximately 15% of the UM student body is involved in a fraternity or sorority, so if this is your forte then there are options.

    Clubs and Activities

There are hundreds of clubs and activities on campus. There are dozens of honor societies, various political clubs, cultural organizations, and even a Quidditch team!

Great for these types of students

If you are a motivated, hard-working, capable student who wants to succeed, yet at the same time have a great college experience and enjoy all that South Florida has to offer, then welcome to the U.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every day during finals week, there are hammocks by the science building, so you can swing on the hammock and study. Also during finals week, they bring puppies onto the common lawn to play with, and sometimes they will have camel rides. As for any unusual traditions, do not step on the official seal outside of the library, and make sure you visit the Rat at least once!

    What to do for fun

There are just too many ways to have fun at the U. On campus alone, there is always an event going. Off campus, there's South Beach, Coconut Grove, downtown Miami, and a number of shopping malls nearby. It's really impossible to be bored down here!

    Food and Dining

I am personally not a huge fan of the school's dining halls. However, I have had friends from all over the country come visit and they have said that our food is excellent. They certainly do have a lot of options, though. If you don't feel like eating in the dining hall at any time, there are a number of restaurants on campus, including the on-campus bar the Rathskeller, Wendy's and Sushi Maki. There are also some great restaurants right across the street from campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms themselves at UM are not hotel rooms. Trust me, they're not. But, the people that you meet in the dorms are so incredible that it really does make up for it. You will have floor programs all freshman year, and they really are a great way to make friends and meet new people. UM does a really great job of providing goodies for students; during finals week they have cereal carts that come on every floor offering free cereal, Chick-fil-a, Chipotle, Cheesecake Factory, Taco Bell, etc. all for free as study break snacks.

    Academic Rigor

As a high school student, you have yet to face the behemoth; the Voldemort; the Balrog; the Joker; the whatever you want to call it; finals. College finals are no joke, and you should really study for them all semester long. Professors are certainly there to help you, but if you are not motivated, do not expect them to assist you. Keep on top of your work, because some classes will be more challenging than others. If a class is challenging for you, utilize all of the facilities UM has to offer, including tutoring services and our amazing library.

    Tips for prospective students

Be sure to keep tabs of your financial aid status from the beginning of your journey. Being a private school, UM can be expensive. It is important that you have a good GPA, a variety of extracurricular activities, and if possible have work experience or be in the top 10% of your class. Certain SAT and ACT scores can garner you a wide range of university scholarships, so make sure that your scores are up to par.

    In three sentences

The U invented swagger. How so? Well, how many universities can you name that are simply recognized by one letter? The reign of the Hurricanes football team in the 1980s was just the beginning. Today, UM boasts a ranking of 38 out of the top 100 schools in the country, making it the best school in Florida. With its diverse student body, incredible professors, challenging and informative classes, and beautiful weather all year round, there really is not better place to be than Sun Tan U.

The school is without a doubt expensive. But they do give you so many little things that many schools do not. You notice quickly that they give you a lot of breaks that most schools do not; free printing for one simple example.

    Food and Dining

Plenty of options for everyone. Whether you want a full meal or a quick snack you can always find something in many different locations throughout campus.

    Dorm Life

Not the best dorms ever but certainly not the worst. They make it really easy to meet new people.

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

First and foremost, try your best to NOT goof off your freshman year. Although the freedom and independence is new (and much needed), the classes you are in still count for your GPA and your future. Have fun, take a little step back and enjoy the gorgeous scenery and Miami atmosphere, but always remember that academics are the most important thing at the end.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is one of the most diverse Universities in the nation. Both academics and sports are world class, and the experiences offered create lifelong memories and friendships. It is an honor and a privilege to attend this University, and it ranks as one of the best decisions I have ever made.

    Bang for the buck

The school is expensive but it is completely worth it. You pay for the education you want and your learning from well-rounded teachers with experience.

    Academic Rigor

I rated it five stars because it is a private school so the workload is harder, their are more things to complete, and the grading scale is harder. However, my major is Education so to me the work is not that hard, it's just a lot of work. But at the end its all worth is.

    Tips for prospective students

Study hard so you can have a high GPA and testing scores and join activities because that looks great on your application.

I was only allowed to eat at Chartwells and i was very pleased with the amount of Vegitarian options they had. It had a very big variety for any type of person and it can suit almost any person well, they staff was also very welcoling and friednly. They could use some less saltier options, more healthy.

    Dorm Life

I thought the freshman dorms were very small, jail like and the space distribution was not used efficiently. I think they can work on upgrading some of the suites and up dating furniture. I don't know what the SOCIAL life might be like on campus, I only stayed during the summer for 3 weeks, but with the close proximity, it might be a place where all the neighboring dorm rooms are friends, a community bathroom is uncomfortable but the shower heads are strong.

    Academic Rigor

I had a couple classes and presentations from the teachers at UM, and it seemed top notch, they definitely knew what they were talking about, were highly educated and had tremendous passion for what they did.

    In three sentences

The campus is definitely eye catching, full of trees and nature all around.Taking class in the journalism building, i can say the equipment and classes are top notch and have the most recent technology. The dorms were not the greatest, at least the college dorms from what i experienced.

    Food and Dining

I would recommend eating at the dining halls as little as possible.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are a little old. Hecht is better than Stanford in terms of working elevators and a nicer lobby.

    Academic Rigor

The courses are difficult depending on what teacher you get. As long as you can develop good study skills and are able o adapt yourself to the teaching processes of the professors you will do well.

    Tips for prospective students

This is a science heavy school. You get started on a major as soon as you walk in the door so it is best to come in with some type of major in mind. This is not a liberal arts school so do not come in with that kind of mindset.

    Campus Safety

Campus itself is very safe, but you should be in groups especially as a female walking around and taking public transportation at night.

    Greek Life

Greek life is big, but not at all a majority on campus. There are no sorority houses on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There is so much diversity on campus and so many great organizations to be involved in.

Great for these types of students

Great for motivated students who will take advantage of the city's opportunities and experiences without letting it distract from academic responsibilities.

    Bang for the buck

It is an expensive school, but we are ranked very high and the school has a lot to offer its students. There are many merit scholarships you may be eligible for as well. They make it very easy to find a job on campus, even if you do not qualify for work study.

    What to do for fun

The spot for students is Coconut Grove, just a few minute drive from campus with restaurants, bars, movie theater, and shopping. Slightly farther off campus is Miracle Mile, which has higher end shops and restaurants. Further is Brickell, which is more of an area for Graduate Students and young professionals. There is always South Beach, which is great for a day on the beach or clubbing at night.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall food is edible but gets boring after awhile. The food court has limited options that include Panda Express, Subway, Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Salsaritas, a salad bar, and more. We also have a restaurant/bar on campus where you can get good food, a pitcher of beer (if you're of age) and watch football.

    Dorm Life

All of the freshmen live together in two different dorms. This is great to make lots of friends and get to know people. After the first year, many students move off campus, but some stay on. These dorms are suite style, and suites often keep more to themselves. After the second year, most students move off campus. If not, they can live in University Village, which is apartment style housing. This includes a full kitchen and your own bedroom.

    Academic Rigor

Academic rigor at the University of Miami definitely depends on major. If you are in any of the hard sciences or engineering, you will have a lot on your plate academically. In the communications school there is mostly project work, students are expected to get involved in internships and in organizations on campus for tv, radio, etc. The business school students are notorious for doing no work, however in upper level accounting and finance classes, there is a significant workload.

    In three sentences

University of Miami is a gorgeous campus where you get a great education while also getting access to a city with lots of opportunities for internships and networking. The diversity is incredible; I can honestly say I can go to 45 out of 50 of the states and at least 15 countries and have a friend to stay with while I'm there. The most difficult part is balancing all of the great off campus activity with work and school obligations.

    Academic Rigor

Its tough but rewarding, learn how to study and don't take your first semester for granted.

I'm not going to lie: Miami is an expensive school. However, they're really good with financial aid and scholarships, and the quality of education you get won't compare with any other college.

    What to do for fun

What isn't there to do? You're a 20-minute train ride from downtown Miami, a 20-minute bus ride from the beaches of Key Biscayne and Virginia Key, and an hour car ride from the southern keys. There's anything and everything you could ask for!

    Food and Dining

The dining halls have good food, but it definitely gets old after awhile. Luckily, there are numerous dining options outside of the dining halls that you can eat at with Dining Dollars.

    Dorm Life

The dorm rooms themselves aren't that special, but the dorm staff really does try to make you feel at home. With RAs on every floor, AFs on every other floor, and an ACAR in each building, there are numerous options if you need someone to talk to.

    Academic Rigor

Some of my friends at other colleges have said that their classes have been easy. At Miami, they're far from easy, but they are interesting, and the professors really do care about you (except in those 200+ lecture halls, which there aren't that many of). Very rigorous, but doable if you work hard.

    Tips for prospective students

At night you can either go to the grove, downtown, south beach, frat parties, whatever floats your boat there is always plenty to do.

    Food and Dining

The food in the dining hall isn't bad but their hours take a little to get used to. The also have a food court and a bar on campus so thats nice. There are a lot of good places within walking distance of campus too so its easy to get food anytime you need.

    Dorm Life

It's really easy to meet people and they set up a lot of events for you to just got hang out at but the dorms are a little old. Not dilapidated or anything, just a little old.

    Academic Rigor

The amount of work you have depends on what your major is. I am an international finance and marketing major and I don't have an overwhelming amount of work but enough to keep me busy. A few of my friends are pre-med and they are always studying and doing tons of work.

    Tips for prospective students

Stay focused, especially during your first semester. It's really easy to get off track and start having a little too much fun. Just make sure your fun isn't interfering with your studies. It just takes the first semester to get used to college and having so much freedom.

    Campus Safety

Our campus is super safe. They send out warnings as texts, phone calls, and emails whenever anything happens on campus to keep everyone informed, and you can call for a police escort anytime at night if you ever feel unsafe. However, I have walked from the library back to my dorm several nights at 5:00am and I have never once felt unsafe nor had the need to ask for an escort.

    Greek Life

Greek life is not a huge part of your experience at Miami unless you want it to be. It all depends on what kind of person you are.

    Clubs and Activities

Some of my best friends I have met in clubs. Because Miami is so diverse, you can fit in anywhere no matter who you are.

Great for these types of students

If you are super social or super shy, I think Miami is the place for you. Both extremes and even people in the middle both have found their place at Miami, and some of the shyest people I met move in day have completely broken out of their shell and have done some amazing things on campus. Miami has a way of bringing the best out in people.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every semester during finals week, the university offers free massages by real masseuses outside the library and there are also hammocks during finals week so everyone can just chill out and take a break. They really try to de-stress you so you can do the best you can on your finals. There are several more, but since I'm writing this review right after finals, those are all my brain can remember right now.

    Bang for the buck

As everyone in the entire world knows, Miami is not cheap. Not even close, but I think you are getting your money's worth. You have a gym membership included with Zumba (love that class) and other workout classes as well. On top of the free massages during finals and free admission to games (yes even football), you can't beat the academics and activities hosted on campus.

    What to do for fun

For fun, there is obviously going to the beach (which is amazing), hanging out in downtown Miami, the clubs in South Beach and the Grove and of course Frat parties. There is no pressure to do anything you don't want to do which is another thing I love about Miami. It all depends on what kind of person you are. Some of my most memorable night has actually been from events held on campus (during the las week of classes, they brought fake snow on campus) so make the most of them.

    Food and Dining

Let me just say the dining hall food can be pretty gross sometimes and I think if it wasn't for dining dollars (money on your cane card or school id that can be used for restaurants on campus like Subway, Panda Express, etc) my review of the dining hall food would probably be a 2. However, some of the food here served in the dining hall is absolutely amazing, so you kinda have to find what you like.

    Dorm Life

I love dorm life! Even though the Stanford dorms (where I spent my freshman year and one of the two freshman dorms) are totes ghetto, you cannot help but bond when you and some other students are stuck in the elevator for the 5 time that week on your way to class. (Okay so it's not that bad, but the elevators are known to skip floors). The people you meet in your tower end up becoming your best friends and your RA (resident assistant) and AF (academic fellow; they help you with anything related to your classes and major and stuff) live on your floor and are always willing to help with anything.

    Academic Rigor

There are some classes that are absolutely ridiculous while others are so easy that it is a waste of time to even take the energy to go to class. It all ultimately depends on the professor you have though. That being said, I learned the most from the classes I struggled in than classes I got A's in so don't shy away from hard professors. You learn the most from them. Overall, the academics at the University of Miami are amazing and anyone can do really well as long as you are willing to work hard.

    Tips for prospective students

If you want to apply to Miami, apply. When I was applying, my application was nowhere near perfect, but they accepted me anyway. What I lacked as a person applying to the University, I gained as a student.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is an amazing school. It's a medium sized school located in the beautiful suburb of Coral Gables. The school itself is big enough you that you are always meeting new people, but small enough so you are more than a number and your professors actually will know your face AND name (a super plus when asking for recommendations).

    What to do for fun

Your right there near Miami, so from the beach to the city itself, there are definitely things to do.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls and cafeterias are fairly large, with lots of options. You can't go wrong.

    Dorm Life

The dorms aren't huge, but they are comfortable and fulfill their purpose.

    Academic Rigor

Miami is very rigorous academically with some of the best programs in the country.

    Tips for prospective students

Although I still am a prospective student, I would say take advantage of your enviornment and being in Miami. Don't do anything too wreckless, but make new friends, learn about the culture of Miami, and take advantage of the incredible educational opportunities being offered to you.

    In three sentences

Miami is one of those schools where you get the best of both worlds. Or in this case, you get the best of everything. Of course, UM is beautiful, being in Coral Gables, but the city of Miami is right there with so many opportunities at your fingertips. Miami is so strong educationally with incredible programs, but at the same time has strong athletic programs, several clubs, and a lot of diversity. Miami is a school that anyone could find their place in, except if you like cold weather.

Great for these types of students

Athletic, academically rigorous, motivated, persistent, independent.

    Food and Dining

UM has a wide variety of foods due to it's wide variety of students.

    Dorm Life

It's great because you live on a pretty large campus, yet still have the feeling of community. Although be ready to party after your work is done, because it didn't get Playboy's Party School of 2009 for nothing!

    Academic Rigor

UM isn't a nationally known school like Yale or Harvard but it's a great school nonetheless. The professors are all leaders in their trade.

    Tips for prospective students

You have to be the best in your graduating class to get here. This school is not for slackers or procrastinators, trust me, the work load will add up if you don't do it.

    In three sentences

UM is rigorously academic. They have a great athletic department and a broad spectrum of majors, classes, a pre-profession al studies. It's located in a heart of a Culture cauldron, warm weather and all.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is a big deal on our campus. The school goes above and beyond to assure that students are safe. There is campus police, security patrollers at night, and safety call boxes.

    Greek Life

There is a Greek presence of our campus but it is not huge. There are fraternity houses but no sorority houses. There are Greek events from time to time that are fun to go to.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons and tons of clubs. You can find almost anything you want, and if not, it is likely that you can start a club for what you want.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for diversity. If you enjoy being in a setting with diverse cultures, people, and things, then this is the place for you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

An unusual tradition is the burning on the lake during homecoming weekend. They set a boat on fire in the middle of the lake.

    Bang for the buck

This school is expensive but the ranking makes it worth it.

    What to do for fun

There are always things to do for fun. You can go to parties, the beach, tons of activities provided on and off campus.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining is not the best but there are many options are the city and need campus.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is fun and interesting. The RA's are dedicated to making students experiences pleasant and fun. There are always activities and free things given out.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Miami is know for its competitive academic atmosphere and has been moving up in the rankings over the past 6 years.

    Tips for prospective students

Have a strong GPA and SAT/ACT scores. Instead of attempting to seem well-rounded, explain how you have specific skills and interests that fit the University of Miami.

    What to do for fun

South Beach is very close and accessible through public transportation for just $5 a day. There are countless places to shop and eat near campus. Many popular festivals go on here and in surrounding areas such as the Ultra Music Festival.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls are not as bad as some people make them out to be. The food can get a little boring and repetitive after a while though.

    Dorm Life

Living in the dorms has been an amazing experience. You meet a ton of people. I made some of my closest friends here through the floor we lived on.

There's a BEAUTIFUL lake with a newly updated hall on the other side and a huge fountain. A bridge over looks the entire view. AMAZING!

    Bang for the buck

Pretty expensive. I probably would have gone if I were offered a scholarship.

    What to do for fun

There seemed to be plenty of stuff to do for fun. Theres an area on campus where my tour guide said there something going on almost every day. So even though you're, for the most part, stuck on campus your first year, you will be entertained on campus.

    Food and Dining

I heard the food here was nice. But by looking at the choices from a glance, I wasn't very awed.

    Dorm Life

When I visited a dorm, it was very small, cramped, and dark. It was also disappointing to find that all the girls on that floor share on communal bathroom. I want to be comfortable my first year of college. I researched another college I'm interested in and found that their dorms were much brighter, had their own bathrooms, and less-cramped. And this wasn't even a private college!

    Academic Rigor

The school is known for their challenging academics. It is also great if you are planning on attending medical school, since you are recognized for already attending UM and they have their own medical school, The Miller School of Medicine.

    Tips for prospective students

Go visit the campus. It was a nice school that I was planning on attending since I first began looking at schools. But I've researched other schools and am becoming less interested in it. Do plenty of researching and comparing. You want to end up at the right school for YOU. Not matter what anyone else tells you.

    In three sentences

A beautiful place to study with loads of things to do on campus. Lots of history and tradition that makes the school unique. Plenty to do and everyone seemed so helpful and nice.

    Greek Life

I like it. you don't have to go Greek to know a Greek. I thought Greek life wasn't for me but after one semester I soon found multiple Greek organizations I wanted to join. So keep your mind open

    Clubs and Activities

A restaurant nicknamed the rat sells fresh burgers and things of that sort. It is really good, but on the expensive end. We have a Starbucks on campus, it is REALLY convenient and right across from the library. the breezeway is near the bookstore and the student center and orgs are often there handing things out. Lastly, the rock where most major outdoor events happen.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Miami is VERY expensive. The education is worth it plus the name. But still, watching all that money go towards school is not easy.

    What to do for fun

I like to attend sporting events. Our men's football, basketball and baseball teams are all fairly good. I enjoy sports and its free with your student fees. Also, if you take the metro the entire city of Miami is yours!

    Food and Dining

The dining hall is actually pretty good. I mean it gets mundane at times. But then they spice it up. It is worth the money.

    Dorm Life

I do not like the dorms. I find them too small and not well equipped. But hey, no college story is complete with out an interesting dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

I think if you worked hard enough to get into the university, you will have no issue with classes. That being said, sciences are no joke. The University of Miami is a research university, many of the researchers are your professors. Be prepared to work.

    Tips for prospective students

The cost of living in Coral Gables is a little higher than other places, so be sure to prepare for that. You get dining dollars to use around campus, don't make the freshman mistake of spending them all in the first week.

There are ENDLESS possibilities when it comes to night life or leisure activities. Being just 20 minutes from South Beach and 10 minutes from Coconut Grove gives students options in any type of night life they could be looking for. Fraternities are also big on campus, but not necessary if it does not interest you.

    Food and Dining

Chartwells provides all of the campus's food, and it is not horrible. There are hundreds of restaurants within a mile or two of school, so it is nice to eat out every once in a while!

    Dorm Life

Although dorms are not ideal for anyone, they are definitely great in comparison to others that I had visited in the past. They are not too small and the bathrooms are kept clean.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Miami has recently become an incredible institution and the academics are getting harder. The incoming classes are smarter, and teachers definitely have been increasing work loads. However, it is nothing that is unmanageable and you actually learn a lot.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls and meal plans are average for a college campus. We also have a food court to serve as another option.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is one of the most important experiences, especially for freshman year. I made my closest friends from living with them in the dorms. The appearance of the dorms may not be the most desirable, however this does not prove to matter nearly as much as anything else.

    Academic Rigor

The science classes are the most challenging, but all the classes are manageable with the right amount of time and effort. Students as a whole do care for their academics and this shows with the level of rigor found on campus.

    Tips for prospective students

I have 2 tips. First, learn to manage life and friends with your academics and extracurriculars. I believe mastering this is key to having the best college experience possible. Second, learn to not let the stress get to you; you will find a way to get done what you need to get done!

    Campus Safety

The campus is extremely safe. If there is ANY sign of a problem, every single student on campus automatically gets sent an e-mail, a text, and gets a phone call to avoid a certain area or to be aware. The campus police are very on top of things!

    Greek Life

The Greek life is so much fun. I never considered myself a sorority girl but decided to rush just to see how I'd like it. I honestly am so glad I did. Although it is a time commitment, and I'm really busy as it is, it is worth it to Rush. It's not for everyone, but you never know until you try it out!

    Clubs and Activities

There is ALWAYS something to do. Just get involved and I promise you'll be glad you did!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

During finals week, our President Shalala hangs hammocks across the trees for people to lie down on and she also brings puppies to campus that the students can play with and hold. It's super cute and helps relieve some of the stress! Also, there is a seal right by the UM store and everyone knows not to step on the seal or you won't graduate! Also, every year for the incoming students, President Shalala hosts a picnic at her house. It's like a carnival and there is a ton of food and it's so much fun!!!

    What to do for fun

There are so many performances that people can go to and they are all free for UM students! Also, in order to have more fun I joined a sorority. It has been a wonderful experience and I have really enjoyed being able to be a part of the campus as a whole instead of just always the music school! While I absolutely love the music school, it's always nice to meet other people as well. There are many Frat parties, which are always fun to go to. There is Greek Week, where the fraternities and sororities compete against each other to win. Also, of course, as with most colleges, the football and basketball games are always so much fun to go to.

    Food and Dining

I've eaten in the dining halls a couple of times. I hear that it's amazing for the first few weeks, and then after that the options get repetitive and people tend to not like the dining hall food as much. But, i usually go to Starbucks every single morning on campus, since i commute, and then we have a cafeteria area where there is a Sushi Maki, Red Mango Frozen Yogurt, Jamba Juice, Salsarita's Mexican place, Mango Manny's (which has food like chicken kitchen), a salad bar, Niko's (which is a sandwich place), and a Panda Express. Across from Gusman Hall (where I perform a lot) there is a Subway. We also have our famous restaurant, the Rathskeller, which we all call The Rat. Everyone loves that place. There is also a great sushi place off campus (which people can walk to) called Moon Thai that everyone knows about. Also, there is a new student center being built (set to open in the Fall of 2013), which supposedly will have other new food options.

    Dorm Life

I can't say too much about the dorm life, because I commute from home, but I have stayed overnight in some friends dorm rooms and it can be a very fun and exciting experience. The only issue with the dorm life is that it can be difficult to study at times with all of the people running around your floor. Or I've heard stories of roommates bringing a bunch of people in rooms, which can distract you from studying. When this happens, people usually go to the library. The second floor of the Richter library, specifically, will give you the quiet space you need to study. I usually go to the Weeks Music Library, though, because it's located in the music school and the general student population doesn't know to go there!!!

    Academic Rigor

I would say that the academics are pretty rigorous at UM--at least for me. I can speak for the music majors, as I am a voice major at the Frost School of Music. Music students have to take many more classes than the average student and they are worth less credits. So, while the average student takes about five classes, I take about 12 classes a semester for less credits, which does not include all of the weekend shows and late night rehearsals. It can be a bit intense at times, especially since I perform outside of school all the time, as well, but it's definitely worth it!

    Tips for prospective students

Tips I would give to prospective students are that they shouldn't stress out about the whole college experience! There are many worries that students have such as making new friends, being far away from home, and the difficulty of the classes. Although I stayed in Miami for college and did not have to leave, I still know many people who traveled from all over the world to go to school at UM and they all absolutely love it. I have friends from China, Japan, Spain, and Italy! UM has such a diverse student population and it makes it so much fun because I get to hear many different languages and learn about different cultures. Once you make friends and get involved, college becomes a blast!

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is located in the beautiful city of Coral Gables, FL. The campus is the perfect size because it's big enough to where I see new people everyday, but small enough to where I walk around and see people I know, so I feel very welcome. Also, UM has a great campus life, where many students are involved in Greek life, sports, the performing arts, and many other organizations.

You're in Miami. There's something for everyone! Go to the beach, even if you don't like the sometimes crowded South Beach. Or there's downtown Miami, full of awesome venues and places to explore, knit together by the Metro system. Or there are neighborhoods like Little Havana, full of culture and the BEST food!

    Food and Dining

Gotta be honest here too: the dining hall food could definitely improve. There are great places to eat in the food court, and there are a couple other food places around campus that are hidden gems like Sebastian's Cafe.

    Dorm Life

I'm not going to lie, the dorms could probably use an upgrade, especially Eaton. This being said, the dorm culture is awesome, particularly in the Freshmen dorms. In February, all the dorms have a competition called Sportsfest, and it's a total blast!

There is a food court, with a good amount of options. They have the Rathskeller which had been relocated to a new student center as is the schools sports bar. Two floors and on the small lake on campus. There is also a convenience store and two more restaurant in the University Center. One is a kosher restaurant. Then there is a starbucks and a new one opening up in the new Student center that will be 24/7. A subway is also in the law school and food trucks make their appearance very often along with the schools Uragano truck (which means Hurricane in Italian) that serves gourmet pizzas.

    Academic Rigor

This all depends on your major, class level and your teacher. But all of them expect the best out of you, it's up to you how hard you want to work.

    Tips for prospective students

If you need financial aid, this is an expensive private school to attend. But if you really need financial help, they help you out as much as they can as there are many donors who give students a hand, but after that it might get a bit harder to afford since tuition is going up every year. Don't be afraid to change majors if you're not happy, the university will accommodate you and help your transition well. I've had a couple of friends go that and they're happy.

    In three sentences

A great university for medicine, engineering and journalism. Small campus where you get to know many people and can get close to your professors. Staff in the school are ready to help and many opportunities to get involved on campus, volunteering, art, campus events and such.

    Campus Safety

The security systems are excellent. I receive text message and call alerts whenever there is a dangerous situation on campus.

    Greek Life

Greek life isn't important to me as a person but it is present in my school for those who are interested.

    Clubs and Activities

There are plenty of organizations for every type of student, both academic, extracurricular and religious.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I don't know of many unusual traditions or locations on campus besides the gravity pit, which is a large hole in the ground where a very large tree used to be. It is now a hang-out and its very beautiful.

    Bang for the buck

UM is widely recognized and held as a prestigious institution. The education given is spectacular and professors will go the extra mile for students. It is pricey, however.

    What to do for fun

Being that UM is in Miami, you are never too far away from a fun time! South beach is 20 minutes away through the highway and there are plenty of other hang out spots like parks, restaurants and bars.

    Food and Dining

There are alot of food options around the area, especially considering there is a shopping mall two blocks down, and also many small restaurants near the area.

    Dorm Life

I live at home however, I have been to the dorms and they are a bit dismal looking.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are very tough, especially in the science fields. Students are competitive and 100% effort will be required to succeed in these classes.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should plan early on for scholarships and funding, especially if they are from a medium income home where financial aid is given less than to lower income students and parents are more pressed for money than the higher income families. Besides the financial aspect, prospective students should also take part in extracurriculars and leadership roles, as well as studying to receive a high SAT score and above-average grades.

    In three sentences

UM is an energetic campus bustling with opportunity and enthusiasm. While it is pricey and many of the activities such as study abroad are expensive, I enjoy the atmosphere. The classrooms are spaceous, clean, and the teachers are very professional.

You receive a phone call when there are disturbances in the school sooo yeah. Safety is first priority.

    Greek Life

In my opinion, the school isn't very big on greek life as there are clubs all around the city yet there are tons of them and the bonds you share will last a life time.

    Clubs and Activities

A division I school with even more options for those who rather try intramural

Great for these types of students

The school is great for, what I consider, an all-around student. Someone who is well balanced in all aspects such as academically, athletically, socially etc.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The burning of the boat is a long standing tradition where a boat is sent out into the lake and set on fire. Everyone gathers and enjoys the fire works and food.

    Bang for the buck

The is very expensive but well worth every dollar.

    What to do for fun

Miami Beach is but a half hour away from the school. It is advised to head over to the beach when possible and have some fun in the sun. The schools wellness center provides a variety of options to have fun with equipment for racket ball, tennis, swimming and basketball.

    Food and Dining

Coming from a boarding school I know a thing or two about school food and I promise that the food is of great quality.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are taken care of every day. The rooms are quite small but clean and maintained

    Academic Rigor

THe school has only begun to develop a name for itself but is quickly climbing through the ranks in academics. I can assure you that you will get as much as you put in.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not miss out on an opportunity of a life time. The school is located in an amazing city and the campus has an amazing atmosphere. It easy to have as much fun as possible but the school provide you with an enormous amount of options to get your studying done because in the end you are there for experience in all aspects.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami has begun to rise to its full potential with the help of the president of the school. It is evident that the school can easily contest with even the strongest of schools in the nation. In regards to academics my rating is beyond exceptional.

Into sports, pre-law, pre-med, Floridians, hot weather enjoyers, people who like wearing flip flops and t- shirts, etc.

    Bang for the buck

Okay the Cost of Attendance is 60k. It's not worth that much. However, if you get scholarships and/or financial aid, it's definitely worth it. They actually care about your success here, and it's great.

    What to do for fun

It's Miami. The possibilities are endless.

    Food and Dining

Dining hall food gets tiring after a while no matter what college you go to. It's not bad, but it gets boring.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is a must. It allows you to make friends, study partners, and lifelong connections with people you might have otherwise not talked to. The dorms are pricey, but have plenty of programs (and free laundry).

    Academic Rigor

This is a tough category to rank. This university can be the hardest to some and easiest to others depending on how you push yourself with your major, honors, courses, etc. It has the potential to have some of the more rigorous academics in the nation.

    Tips for prospective students

Attending is admittingly costly. Be sure to work hard in high school to get scholarship money; every little bit counts!

    In three sentences

University of Miami was not a university I was seeking as a FL resident when I was choosing my colleges, but it has surprised me in ways I never thought possible. Choosing to attend this university was the best life decision I have ever made. This school has it all: the beautiful weather and atmosphere, challenging academics, life-changing professors, and the perfect balance of social and academic activities.

Around the campus you can find buttons to call the campus security. Also, my friend went to the open house, and the guy that presented to her told her that when he's around campus at night and he wants to get to the other side he has the number of the security and you can claim to feel unsafe and they'll give you a ride instead of you having to walk all the way to the other side.

    Greek Life

I'm not planning on rushing, but I've heard there's a lot of fraternities and sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

    There's A LOT of clubs.

Great for these types of students

For every student! It has so many things to offer that anyone can feel comfortable.

    Bang for the buck

Although it's expensive (private school) they do offer a lot of aid.

    What to do for fun

It's Miami, there's everything to do except build snowmen. The beaches are great and so are the parties. If you're not into that, there's museums, libraries, carnivals, expositions, etc.

    Food and Dining

It has various places to eat and if you don't like the cafeteria food, COMMON IT'S MIAMI! There's lots of places nearby!

    Dorm Life

I will be a commuting student, so I won't get to experience this. However, I visited the dorms and the freshman dorms are small (I'm pretty sure this is a common thing around every university), but I think it varies on the dorm you get.

    Academic Rigor

I'm an incoming freshman and haven't taken a class there yet, but I've heard that the academic life is pretty rigorous. I'm pretty sure if you study it'll be fine.

    Tips for prospective students

The school is expensive, but it's also very generous in giving aid. If you do well academically and are enrolled in extracurricular activities you will most likely get a scholarship.

    Campus Safety

The University of Miami has its own police department, the UMPD, so the police are right there on campus at all times. There are call boxes located all over campus if you're feeling threatened at any time. The university also has an escort system, so if you don't feel comfortable walking somewhere alone someone will come and escort you to your location.

    Greek Life

I was a little disappointed to find that sororities could not rush until the spring since I was interested in Greek life. However, the university offers plenty of fraternities and sororities on campus, including social or service.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities on campus, that you'll never get bored. There are at least 5-10 clubs and organizations within the Indian Student's Association alone, now imagine all the other clubs. The students pride themselves in the countless number of service clubs that the university offers, so you'll never have to worry about having to find somewhere to volunteer at, just talk to some classmates to see what's going on.

Great for these types of students

This university is great for all students seeking a higher education. The university is known for its diversity, so you'll never feel alone at the school no matter who you are or what you like. As long as you're serious about school and a challenge, then this school is for you.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Once you get admitted into the university you learn all the chants and cheers for each residential college, as well as for the football games. There is a long standing rivalry between the two freshmen residential colleges: Hect and Stanford.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Miami is on the pricy side, however, you do get what you pay for. The food is, once again, more than amazing, as is the fitness center. The professors are friendly and great at what they do, and all the staff on campus are very nice and accommodating to your needs. Football games are also free to all students, which I know that not all universities do.

    What to do for fun

The campus itself offers tons of student activities, such as: pool parties, meet and greets, etc. There are so many clubs and associations on campus to meet new people and have a good time. On the university there is a state of the art fitness center, two student activities centers, a pool and much more that offers students something to do in their spare time.

    Food and Dining

The food here is amazing! They accommodate every type of student's needs: they offer vegetarian food, gluten free food, kosher meals, and all sorts of healthy options. Eating in a dining hall twice a day never gets boring, there are always new selections or ways to spice up the old selections.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are extremely small, but the university does a great job of making sure that there is enough storage space for all of your necessities. The floors are very personable, and each floor's R.A. does an exceptional job of helping everyone mingle and get to know one another right off the bat. Even though it is not everyone's cup of tea to share a bathroom with 40 other people, the bathrooms are always kept clean, and never can you not go to the bathroom or use a shower at any time of the day.

    Academic Rigor

I am very pleased with the classes that I am enrolled in this semester. Chemistry was always a challenge for me, and the professor that I have is wonderful at helping students understand whatever they need assistance with. There are choices of classes to take for whatever major you are taking, so you never have to worry about that. A tip would be to make sure that you are enrolled in the right level of classes, if a class seems to easy drop it as soon as possible and take a more challenging class.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips for prospective students would be to get your financial situation figured out early, you do not want to go into school with problems regarding payments, or worse not knowing if you will be able to stay because the university is so expensive. While in the university my tips would include staying on top of the school work, while in Miami it might be tempting to go out every night and have a good time, but remember you are in the college for an education.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami has an impeccable campus, dining service, and staff. Even though I am only a short few weeks into the university I am in love with the feel of the classes: they are challenging, but not unable to pass. The University of Miami also offers countless extra curricular activities, and basically anything that you could ever possibly be interested in participating in the university has it.

Great for these types of students

U Miami is great for students who are outgoing and good looking.

    What to do for fun

There are frat parties most weekends, as well as football game tailgates during the season. Miami Beach is about 20 minutes away. Busses on campus run to Coconut Grove, which has restaurants and clubs. Downtown Miami is also nearby, so people never really run out of things to do.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls are pretty good, and there's also a food court with things like Wendy's and Panda Express. There's a Subway and a Starbucks near the library, a McDonald's and Denny's across the street, and the campus bar, the Rathskeller. Most places accept the dining dollars that you can get with your meal plan.

    Dorm Life

The freshman dorms are pretty isolated, which is nice for getting to know fellow freshmen. The other dorms on campus are pretty nice, and close to the classrooms so it's only about a 7 minute walk. When you're an upperclassman, you also have the option of living on the campus apartment buildings.

    Academic Rigor

People take their academics seriously, but the professors aren't too hard (depending on what you're studying). Most students get A's and B's, typically because they're very driven.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't come to U Miami thinking that you're entering a place where frat parties rule the school. Frats are fun, but it's not always a huge party here.

    In three sentences

U Miami is a place where students know how to prioritize. Everyone takes their academics seriously, but they don't let it interfere with having a good time. The students here keep their lives very balanced.

    Campus Safety

Like any college campus you have to exercise good common sense and don't put yourself in a dangerous or vulnerable situation. Campus police are present and proactive, but it is a big campus. I have always felt safe on campus and in the surrounding area of the campus. Before you head outside the campus, do your research to see if it is a safe neighborhood. There are some areas that are safer than others, just like your own home.

    Greek Life

    One word.....CRAZY.

    Clubs and Activities

The U has something going on everyday for you to get involved with. It's up to the student how much to get involved with campus activities and./or clubs. It's all there and it's not hard to find something that will interest you. With such a diverse student body, no one is an outsider - everyone is a Cane.

Great for these types of students

The U is great for serious students. With a lot of distractions around you it is easy to get off track. It's the right fit if you are the type of student who can prioritize what needs to be done and when to have fun.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Wellness Center is a great place to workout the stress of being a college student and clear your head. It's clean and well kept and the staff there are all helpful and very nice. The staff are knowledgeable, professional and you will feel welcome and at home. It's not like a lot of gyms where you feel intimidated or like an outsider - from day one, you will feel like it's YOUR gym. They always have events and classes that you can take advantage of - from cooking classes to personal trainers to zumba--it's all there.

    Bang for the buck

No matter what school you decide to attend, it's going to cost a bundle. Make it happen. There are tons of scholarships out there and student loans are also an option. It's worth every penny and you will not regret it. Being a part of The U opens doors and you can't put a price tag on those networking opportunities.

    What to do for fun

There is something for everyone at the University of Miami and Miami in general. Make friends while you are there and you will never run out of things to do. You will not regret going to any of the Hurricane football games - even if you don't like football. The school spirit is crazy!!!! Win or lose, you will walk away with a feeling of pride that you are a Cane.

    Food and Dining

It's nice to have a mini fridge and microwave in your room. There is plenty of food on campus and quite a variety but it is nice to have the convenience of food/beverages in your room for those all night study cram sessions. Miami is loaded with amazing restaurants. If you have the luxury of a car on campus and lots of extra money, you will gain 20 lbs.!

    Dorm Life

Don't get caught up in the distractions of living in the Dorm. Remember why you are attending college and balance how much you allow yourself to get off track. Have fun, but keep everything in perspective.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Miami is very selective about who they accept. You might have been the smartest student in high school, but so was everyone else who was accepted at the U, Be prepared to work yourself beyond what you thought you were capable of. There are no easy A's here. There is help available if you feel overwhelmed - you have to take the initiative to seek out the help you need, but it IS here. Don't fall behind because the semesters move very quickly.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared to study hard and work for your grade. Stay focused and be careful not to get off track of why you are attending the University of Miami - there are a lot of distractions if you aren't here for the right reasons. Get involved with the on-campus events and games and make the most of the opportunities that U of Miami has to offer. Four years will fly by!

    In three sentences

On a scale for 1 - 10 I would rate the University of Miami a huge 10! You will be academically challenged but if you were accepted for enrollment, you can handle it - you are the best of the best or you wouldn't have been selected. The faculty are there for you and they make themselves available if you need additional guidance to succeed. The campus is beautiful and safe and there is always something going on. The weather speaks for itself! Can't beat it. Why choose a school that is located in a state that see's 365 days of cold or rain when you can choose Miami where the weather is always beautiful.

    What to do for fun

There are a lot of parties everywhere. The frats throw down every weekend, almost. You can also do intramural sports. If you don't drink, there's always cane night live which is something UM plans to keep people away from parties.

    Food and Dining

Chartwells is very bad. Sanitary standards are not even met. The plates sometimes have some remains from the past meal. Furthermore, the workers are always in a bad mood, at least some of them. The food is not delicious, by any standard.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life, honestly, sucks. Rooms are extremely small. Furthermore, the students in the same floor are not as friendly. It's expected, though, if you live with someone long enough people will start to hate each other. If the rooms were larger, and we had bathrooms for the freshman dorms it would have been better.

    Academic Rigor

Contrary to popular belief, UM is not primarily a party school. The school really cracks down on alcohol and other such drugs. Donna really cares about wiping that reputation away. However, education is the top priority. Teachers really care about you especially in smaller classes. Furthermore, UM is ranked in the Barron's Selectivity rating with many ivy league schools so for grad schools it is the same rigor as many ivy league schools.

    Tips for prospective students

The University of Miami is a great school. Come here if you want to have fun while enjoying a good education. UM puts a great emphasis on education. UM provides many resources such as the Toppel Career center, and pre-med advisors that really care about your education.

    In three sentences

UM is a great University with a great sense of School pride. The academics are great as well. For those who do not party, the party culture is very overwhelming.

    Campus Safety

Campus is really safe and securities are always roaming around. If there ever is any issue, there are security officials available 24/7 and just a call away. We also have a cool service that if you ever don't feel safe, or it is really late at night, you can call campus security and they will escort you back via golf cart to your dorm room or car.

    Greek Life

There is a lot to do with Greek Life. Traditional sororities and fraternities as well and smaller multicultural ones and business related ones.

Great for these types of students

I don't think there is any specific type of student that this school is great for because it meets the needs of so many diverse students, so it is actually great for all types of students.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

An unusual kind of cool tradition is that at the football games, in the beginning of the fourth quarter everyone holds up 4 fingers because it is said that the Hurricanes always dominate and play their best in the 4th quarter.

    What to do for fun

The school offers activities to do sometimes and of course sporting events, but other than that it is located in Miami; what isn't there to do for fun. You can go to Sunset Place (a mall) and watch movies, shop, or go eat. The beach is just a taxi ride away. And there is always so much going on in the city of Miami, that there will never be a boring weekend.

    Food and Dining

The dining on campus is pretty good. Open salad bars, pizza, and other diverse options of food to eat. Other than dining halls, there are a lot of great options of food to eat on campus.

    Dorm Life

I currently do not live on campus, but I have been in the dorms and they are not that comfortable as freshman, but once you get to being sophomores and up the dorms are nicer because they are suites, making them a little more private.

    Academic Rigor

Challenging, interesting, you will have to work hard and study hard, but it is all worth it.

    Tips for prospective students

The University of Miami will provide students with the right amount of challenge and professors are really open to helping students out. But other than education, the University of Miami is full of spirit and pride in our traditions and you feel a part of a large community when you are a Cane. It truly is great to be a Miami Hurricane.

    In three sentences

The University of Miami provides an excellent education in a very diverse setting. They meet the needs of the students and are interested that they actually learn and receive an education. This school is superb, in quality, spirit, and pride.

    Food and Dining

Some days the food in the dining hall is great and some days its just alright. There are a good amount of options and sometimes they have different themes which is kind of cool. Other than the dining hall, there are a good amount of food options on campus. The rathskeller, which is unique to UM, has good options and it isn't pricey. There's also Lime, Wendy's, Panda Express, and much more. Most of the places that are in close proximity to the school deliver and some even offer discounts for students. There are also plenty of places that are walking distance or a short drive away from campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are expensive (especially for what you get)! The upperclassmen apartments are decent but all of the others are small. Your relationship with your roommate is really important especially since you're living together in such a tight space. On the other hand, living on campus is a really important part of getting involved. Many commuter students have said that they feel left out or don't have much friends.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are definitely a challenge. I am a biomedical engineering major and it is a huge challenge. The elective courses almost seem like a joke when compared to my required courses but overall I believe that every major has its challenges.

    Tips for prospective students

APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS! UM is expensive and you don't want to get caught up taking out more loans than you can handle.

    Campus Safety

The campus itself is pretty safe. However, incidents (mostly petty theft/assaults) do occur in the area surrounding the campus. These almost always happen at night, so it's best to go off-campus in groups if you're going to be out late.

    Greek Life

Yes, there is one - I just don't happen to belong to it although I have friends who do and they are happy with it

Great for these types of students

Music, medicine, music therapy, education.... any!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Rathskeller is located right on Lake Osceola and has over-sized glider tables that have canvas roofs on them!

    What to do for fun

Go to any one of the nearby beaches or the swimming pool on campus. Go to the movie theater and shopping center located within walking distance of the campus. Ride bikes, jog, or go to the outstanding Wellness center on campus. Attend any of the sporting events for the school's teams or the local professional teams. Take the Metro rail downtown to attend events at the performing arts center.

    Tips for prospective students

Plan to study hard if you come to UM! Enjoy the beautiful campus and surrounding area. Participate in the wide variety of activities offered to the student population and get involved!

    In three sentences

The University of Miami is a top-ranked school of music and is also extremely academically challenging. Having just completed my first year there, I can honestly say that I have learned more than I ever expected that I would. Located in south Florida, the weather is incredible and the surroundings of the campus are beautiful.

    What to do for fun

It's Miami; you can do almost anything and everything you can think of. Students often go to The Grove in Coconut Grove, Brickell in Downtown Miami, or South Beach. If you want to stay around or on campus, Dadeland Mall is only two metro stops away. The pool on campus is also a very popular spot to relax.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls on campus are run by Chartwells food service. There are occasional days where the food is pretty good, but mostly the food is mediocre at best. Besides the dinners that vary each day, there are a couple of stable options to choose from: stir-fry line, a sandwich bar, and a burger bar. For the price of the meal plan, most students do not feel like they get their money's worth. Furthermore, you are required to have a meal plan if you live on campus.

    Dorm Life

The negatives: 1. Hecht and Stanford Residential Colleges are old (before the 1970's). 2. The rooms can feel small and suffocating at times. 3.Communal bathrooms. 4. It is easy to hear noise coming from other rooms. The positives: 1. The other students on your floor usually become some of your best friends. 2. The Hecht and Stanford faculty often provide food and activities that make up for dorm life. 3. The indoor shutters are great for daytime naps. 4. The communal bathrooms are cleaned everyday.

    Academic Rigor

You can't go wrong in choosing the University Of Miami if you're planning on pursuing the pre-medical or pre-law track. Most of the early pre-med classes are known as weed-out courses; only those that are truly passionate about studying medicine will opt to stay in. Some classes will seem easier compared to others. Ultimately, it's what you make of your college experience.

    Tips for prospective students

Know what you want: If you are looking for a college town, then this may not be the school for you. Also, be prepared to see the same students around campus throughout the week (it isn't a massive school). If you are sure the University Of Miami is your school, then your main goal on getting in and possibly getting a scholarship is attaining those stellar SAT and ACT scores. Having a great GPA and a bundle of extracurricular activities are obviously also very important in the application process, but your SAT/ACT scores are what can make or break you.

    In three sentences

The University Of Miami, famously known as The U, is a fantastic, medium-sized school known for its unparalleled atmosphere and rising academic reputation. The University Of Miami is great for a student that wants to be situated in a cultural hub of the U.S. but doesn't want to be surrounded by a college town. Although the administration can seem unhelpful or disinterested sometimes, the faculty (most professors) are excellent and willing to go the extra mile to help the student.

    Campus Safety

UM is highly concerned with safety. We have the blue light program and are connected through text and email to everything going on at and around UM. We have hurricane safety links which provided information and serve as a way for us to check in during a storm. Students are required to take an alcohol course upon enrollment.

    Greek Life

UM isn't a Greek or Die school. Being involved in greek life is an experience that is available and many enjoy but it isn't a necessity to prosper at UM.

    Clubs and Activities

Something for everyone. Personally, I want to be involved in so much. the only issue will be balancing out your schedule and deciding what it is that makes the top of your list.

    What to do for fun

You are surround by on and off campus outlets. There is always something going on on campus whether it be a club activity, art showing, performance, game, or pretty much anything you can think of. There was even an elephant brought on the green before. Outside of campus you have the brilliant city of Coral Gables. Malls, movie theaters, beaches, stadiums, night life, food, and all sorts of attractions are literally minutes away.

    Food and Dining

just a note: there is always food everywhere. different organizations always booths all around campus and there are food trucks

    Tips for prospective students

Do not let the price scare you away. Visit the campus. Look into all the amazing events and clubs. Explore your department.

    In three sentences

I am a proud 'Cane. I am entering UM in the fall as pre-law student and a political science major; I am still jostling my minor or second major and one of the countless things I love about the U is the ease at which you can mix your interests and cross departments.

    Campus Safety

Outside campus can be sketchy at times, but campus is very safe.

    Greek Life

It's here with a big presence. I am not in it, though, and no judgment against you if you aren't in it.

    Clubs and Activities

Lots of clubs to join. Very fun. Lots of activities. Intramural and club sports exist (UM has the number 1 muggle quidditch team in the country. They take their quidditch seriously here).

Great for these types of students

International students, minorities (LGBTQ+ people are very well accepted here), people who like warm weather and fun in the sun.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have a lot of school spirit.

    Bang for the buck

    Expensive, but gives out scholarships.

    What to do for fun

The MetroRail right off campus can take you to the city of Miami. Buses can, too. UM has shuttles that can take you to some nightlife. Also, there are many student organizations that one can join. Also, the sports scene on campus is big.

    Food and Dining

I've seen better dining hall food some other colleges. Not many healthy options at the dining hall. However, there is a food court, restaurants, and a convenience store on campus, and there are restaurants off campus that are easy to get to.

    Dorm Life

The Freshman dorms look like prisons. However, the people you meet there will become your friends. It's wonderful.

    Academic Rigor

    Rigorous. I like it.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't party too much. Join clubs. Meet new people. Your dorm is a good place to do that.

    Food and Dining

Having eaten at some on-campus restaurants during my visits to the U, I can say that the quality of the food and the diversity of food options (and the spiciness of the particularly spicy foods) will be things that you'd enjoy getting used to.

    Dorm Life

The dorm rooms are very small and almost all freshmen are put into one of two high-rise dorms on campus, Stanford and Hecht, and as someone who has seen them but not actually lived in them, my view is inherently limited. But you get an astounding view of the campus and more than plenty opportunities to meet other students, so it seems like a decent trade.

    Academic Rigor

Given Miami's reputation as an academically-respected school, I imagine that their reputation was well-earned and that classes will feature many learning opportunities that justify the U's price tag.

    Campus Safety

So many students got robbed coming back from the metro rail last year. It sucks since that's the only means for students living on campus to go anywhere.

    Clubs and Activities

Clubs aren't as active as I would like and Greek Life runs the campus.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The rock pit is pretty cool and the view from the SAC is amazing.

    Bang for the buck

It's very overpriced. Everything costs extra, and there are student fees for everything! Ex. We pay over $100 per year for the Student Activities Center that cost over 22 million to build... And it's really only used for the Rat and Starbucks. Maybe 2 activities a semester... Huge waste of money.

    What to do for fun

Hang out around campus, go to a frat party, or go clubbing in Brickell or The Grove.

    Food and Dining

The staff is great, but the food is dreadful. There aren't enough eating options on campus, and everything is terribly overpriced. Especially the mandatory meal plan.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are the best way to make friends, but they are in such poor condition and if you call facilities... Well it's a waste of time since they won't to anything to help the moldy smell or fix the AC unit.

    Academic Rigor

The test are extremely difficult, and the teachers aren't very good. Better off just teaching yourself and coming in for exams.

    Tips for prospective students

If you aren't science, do it!

    In three sentences

It's not really worth the price. Great for non-science majors, terrible for pre-med. I wish I would have gone elsewhere or waited to apply for medical school.

You, your bicycle, and your dorm are pretty secure. Any personal items are of course your responsibility to keep watch of.

    Greek Life

Many options, with ones for pure service or specialties in studies.

    Clubs and Activities

Over 275 clus, one for anything you can imagine (if not you can create one).

Great for these types of students

Lots of resources on campus to help out no matter what you need, like tutoring or bicycle protection.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Sebastian the Ibis (the mascot) is my favorite, but there are also chants, symbols, and traditions all over. You will get to know them all the first week you arrive.

    Bang for the buck

They take care of everything after you cover tuition.

    What to do for fun

For anything you like to do, there is a group of people here or a club to help you along the way. Join the UWho? or the U Doodle or do anything else on campus that sparks your interest, because there is literally something every day.

    Food and Dining

The dining halls mix it up and have lots of choices, plus a to go option. Besides that there are so many other places to eat nearby and on campus

    Dorm Life

I was skeptical at first about dorm life, but it feels like home after a while.

    Academic Rigor

The faculty and professors help a lot, and there are so many classes and career options available.

    Tips for prospective students

    Dorm Life
