Great for these types of students

UMR is the perfect school for students who are sure they want to pursue a career in the health sciences, like to be challenged academically and intellectually, and like a small school with a community atmosphere.

    Tips for prospective students

I recommend that prospective students visit UMR and talk to the faculty and current students. Seeing the campus is a major deciding factor. Also, if you are considering UMR, you should be sure that you want to go into a health-sciences field; if you're uncertain about that, UMR is not the school for you. It can be difficult for credits to transfer in and out because the courses are all integrated. If you are a transfer student, make sure you find out whether your credits will transfer before making your decision. Also, realize that the coursework is very rigorous, but you will get support from your professors if you take the time to seek help.

    Bang for the buck

UMR isn't as expensive as a lot of private schools, but still offers the small class sizes that make many private colleges appealing. Furthermore, there are a lot of scholarship opportunities available if students are willing to fill out applications. The community offers a lot of help. I only have a couple of complaints about the financial situation at UMR. The laptop fee is a little excessive. Also, there are not really any cheap housing options. Other than that, I feel the prices are reasonable. Students get a small, private-school feel for a public-school price tag.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely love UMR. The instructors are easy to get along with and are very willing to help. The courses are challenging and interesting. The people here are all very friendly. UMR is a really small school, so it has a great community feel. It’s very easy to form relationships with faculty members and other students. The campus is right by Mayo, which is excellent for volunteer or internship experience. Since the campus is in the middle of downtown Rochester, there are plenty of things to do nearby. UMR also sponsors some activities for the students, and there are a lot of clubs that students can join. It is a great school and I am very glad I decided to attend it.

    Am learning a lot

The professors at UMR are very helpful and extremely accessible. At least one professor per department has office and/or Just Ask hours weekly. The courses are rigorous, but the professors genuinely want to help the students learn. They challenge us, but give us the support we need as well. The online grading and feedback system for homework, quizzes, and exams make it very easy for students to assess their work and make the changes necessary to learn the material. There is not a lot of lecture in the classes; instead, we have a lot of class discussion, practice problems, and group work. This setup gets students really involved in the learning. Overall, the learning environment is well-balanced and extremely productive.

    Clubs and Activities

Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot of clubs yet. It's because UMR is only on its third year, and students have not formed the clubs. Luckily, students are free to start their own and I hope to start an Acting Club.

Great for these types of students

UMR is the place to be for students looking at the medical field. Everything about UMR preaches medicine with an integrated and collaborated curriculum. Being in downtown Rochester, MN, students even have the chance to work with the Mayo Clinic!!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

If you have been to the campus itself, you know that it is very unusual. It was built on leased space above a shopping mall. Even though the spacing is chaotic, it is expanding with the new addition of the 318 Commons.

    Bang for the buck

It is well worth the money. Not only are you receive a top notch education, you are also gaining invaluable experience. Plus, the close friendly environment allows conforms to you. You have so many opportunities at UMR that you can make your own journey unique. UMR is relatively cheep around $20,00-25,000/year and half the cost of some private colleges.

    Food and Dining

In downtown Rochester, MN, there are plenty of places to eat. With so many places, there comes a variety of flavors which melt in your mouth with pure succulency. There are also many ethnic foods too, like Chinese, Italian and more. Of course, you could chose to pack your lunch or make it yourself.

    Dorm Life

Although I not be staying in the dorms, I really like their setup in the 318 Commons. They are an apartment style with lots of space. This makes it a little bit more comfortable and gives you the impression you are living on you own.

    Academic Rigor

If you don't want a difficult school, don't come to UMR. Although classes are collaborated so students work together on assignments, that doesn't mean that it is easy. The integrated program has you working on all of the courses together. UMR hard program want to prepare students to face all the challenges in their paths.

    In three sentences

The best way to describe the University of Minnesota, Rochester is UMR. U - an unparalleled experience unlike anything done before, M - medical derived to fit the fields of health care, and R- rigorous with an integrated collaborated curriculum.

    Campus Safety

Great campus security in place. You can even get an security officer to walk you to your car late at night!

    Greek Life

    Currently no fraternities or sororities.

    Clubs and Activities

As a newer school, only about 4 years old, we do not have many clubs yet. The school is good about funding the students ideas for new clubs and creating new and innovative activities. We do have an intercultural club, take student trips, sport tournaments, a dance team, a ballroom team, a cooking club, music club, and student government clubs and positions. We are currently adding more clubs as we get more and more students every year.

Great for these types of students

Very focused, goal orientated students that are interested in health care and can balance a lot of schoolwork.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Many of the students here participate in the annual flash mob!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition for this school has risen especially if you are not from Minnesota. However it is still very low compared to other small campuses and much cheaper than the large ones. The education and amenities are worth the price. You pay for a private school education at a public school price.

    What to do for fun

Most students here hold gatherings at their houses or at the dorms. You can catch a great meal, or a meal and a game like BARGO at Applebees. We are very active here so we frequent the Y a lot and go biking and rollerblading. We play games in the commons areas ranging from video games, to board games, and even large group games. You can go bowling, play laser tag, or take a trip to the house of bounce, etc. You may enjoy a trip to one of the lakes. Lastly, if you are 21 or older there are a few good bars/clubs here. The LOOP is stationed right under the dorms.

    Food and Dining

The restaurants and other various food venues here are amazing! Almost anything you like can be found here and not to far away from campus. There are a lot of family owned restaurants and smaller food chains that have great service, are well kept, and make great food and desserts that I had never tried until I came here. The places here range from cheap $5 meals to VERY expensive $40 or $50 dollar meals.

    Dorm Life

Since the campus is small dorm life can be lacking in excitement at times. However, I find that the UMR campus is sort of like a big family so we usually find entertainment in each other. The dorms are very nice and spacious and they provide a lot of luxuries many campuses can not offer there students because of their size.

    Academic Rigor

This school is very focused in science in math leaning toward pre-medical and graduate students. The curriculum is quite rigorous especially if you do not usually do well in either subject.

    Tips for prospective students

Come prepared for a challenging experience because the curriculum is hard, being focused in health sciences, but know that help is easily attainable. Friends are easy to make here because of the smaller campus size and it actually seems like a real community. Do not attend if you have no interest in health whatsoever.

    In three sentences

University of Minnesota -Rochester truly lives up to its slogan, innovative, challenging, and professional. It delivers a great personalized educational experience in a comfortable setting. At the same time it offers students the chance to grow and explore the career that is right for them and gives them the tools to accomplish their goals.

    Campus Safety

I found it pretty safe. 318 commons has fob entry in the elevator and to each apartment.

Great for these types of students

motivated to pursue a career in medicine. Looking for something small for a easier transition from high school to college. Don't mind the cold and snow. Looking for a student body that becomes pretty close by the end of four years.

    Bang for the buck

    Aid is not amazing.

    Food and Dining

I think students cook at home or there are plenty of restaurants to get food from.

    Dorm Life

    You get an apartment!

    Academic Rigor

I will be attending in the fall so I don't have precise knowledge on the academic rigor.

    Tips for prospective students

Be decided on pursuing a career in medicine. Take advantage of all the opportunities offered.

    In three sentences

The opportunities given to students who have an interest in the health field are amazing! The class size is small which will lead to smaller classroom sizes. Overall, the university is amazing!
