    Tips for prospective students

    c'mon down (:

    Bang for the buck

it's not as as expensive as other schools in the area.

    Am enjoying being here

UMSL's campus is so diverse. There are plenty of clubs and if you cant find one you like, you can create our own.

    Am learning a lot

The classes are a bit difficult, but overall, I love it here. The professors are always willing to help you if you need it, and the students are always forming study groups if you'd like to learn with friends.

    Campus Safety

Campus Safety is very nice. You can call them if you have a late class and they will escort you to your car if you feel scared or anything.

    Clubs and Activities

I know its multiple activities offered but I have only participated in the Student Government Association.

Great for these types of students

I think all types of students fit in here.

    Bang for the buck

Compared to the four year universirties in the area UMSL is one of the least inexpensive ones.

    What to do for fun

It's a lot to do for fun. The university usually has something fun going on but if not there was always something happening in St. Louis. For instance, Kevin Hart just made an appearance on Friday, April 13th. We also receive different discounts on events that come to the area, like Cardinal tickets!!

    Food and Dining

The food waas pretty good. Just here recently we have gotten a Eisteins Bagel on campus which I love. But, there are many options and different restuarants around campus as well.

    Dorm Life

I had just an amazing time living on campus. My roommate and I became best friends and have been every since. We had different activities just about every night!

    Academic Rigor

Some of the professors can be really tough especially in the honors college. They really go by the syllabus and expect alot from the students.

    Tips for prospective students

I think prospective students should really look into and get involved on campus. It is really easy to become a local and lose focus on your studies. I think if you stay active on campus then you will remain on a course of graduation.

    In three sentences

I believe that University of Missouri-St. Louis is a good university. It is a communter school but it was fun living on campus. I do believe that the advisor for first time students should be a little more hands on and have a more pratical approach to help new students understand the courses.

    Campus Safety

The Campus has there own accredited police officers. If you ever feel unsafe or taking night class and want someone to work you to your car the campus police will provide that for you.

    What to do for fun

They are a lot events held on campus for the enjoyment of the students. There an annual carnival held every year, doing homecoming week there some kind of activity held everyday. Organizations on campus have fun things set up for the enjoy of the students so I always have something to do on campus.

    Food and Dining

Dinning is sort of expensive but it's good and sometimes well worth the cost.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are really nice they are made suit style so it's like having your own apartment just with a roommate. The rooms are big and it's key entry that only you have so it can be very private if need be.

    Academic Rigor

The academics is as hard as one makes it at times, but I can say that they teachers are always available to assist and help when needed. They make sure to let the students know multiple ways to contact them and also get help on campus when they are not available.

    Tips for prospective students

One thing that I would recommend for incoming student are prospective students is to be organized and balance with there time management. The University is not a very rich university like other schools in the area so that organization and balance will come in handy when trying to get work-study, scholarships, and etc.

    In three sentences

The University of Missouri-St. Louis is a wonderful campus where there's lots of diversity. There is a lot of opportunity on campus that is being made on campus for the betterment of the students. The teachers are really helpful and available for the students. The environment on campus is pretty friendly and I think It's a great school for someone looking for something close to home but not at home.

    Campus Safety

UMSL isn't the enviroment where there has to be security at every corner. The students there are nice and they tend to mind their own business. There is a good amount of security at the parking lots but not really throughout campus, but seriously...it's not needed. Umsl is a friendly enviroment and Ive actually never seen any conflict on campus.

    Greek Life

Not too familiar with the greek life personally. I do know that the sororities and fraternities are always hosting activities around campus all times of the day.

    Clubs and Activities

There's way too many clubs to even count. Just find where you fit in, figure out what you're good at and figure out what's your passion and I guarantee there's a club with atleast 20 people just like you.

Great for these types of students

Umsl is great for any type of student. It has everything. It's both a academic atmosphere and a fun atmosphere all in one.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The pilot house located in MSC is pretty weird. That's where students was able to do art on the walls. It's also where the Subway is located. But there's a stage and the decor is pretty wild. Fun place to be in actually.

    Bang for the buck

Umsl definitely give you more than what you pay for. It has the cheapest tuition rates as far as universities in that area.

    What to do for fun

There's always so much to do on campus. There's numerous swimming pools. There's the gym in the Mark Twain center. There's the library for quiet relax time. PLus there's always something going on on campus rather it's the Mirthday Carnival or just activities sororities are hosting,

    Food and Dining

I LOVE THEIR FOOD! It's so incredibly good. Plus everyday they have so many different foods to chose from AND they have a subway on campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are so fun. Everyone's nice and helpful. It's also clean and not too noisy.

    Academic Rigor

I love how challenging the courses are. You actually learn something rather than sitting through something you already know. Plus they offer a very wide variety of courses so you can find interest in every course.

    Tips for prospective students

For future students: -Do not wait until the day of or before classes to buy your books or you will be standing in line for hours. -Arrive to school early to find a parking space. The most chaotic times for parking is 10:45-12:30 because thats around the time the 11:00 classes begin. Those are the most favorable classes and most people have those classes so there's literally no parking around that time.

    In three sentences

Great academic enviroment. Not too expensive. Challenging classes.

    Campus Safety

The campus police are continually seen patrolling campus. There are also emergency buttons located on every campus pathway and in every parking garage.

Great for these types of students

UMSL is great for students who want the full university experience with people with down-home values.

    What to do for fun

St. Louis is a mecca of fun. There are several bars and coffeehouses near campus. There are many off-campus entertainment venues. We have everything from Six Flags, to upscale Jazz Bistros, to Broadway theater productions, to craft/food/wine/music festivals, etc.

    Food and Dining

UMSL has a wide variety of fresh and hot food options. The student center has a spacious dining facility.

    Dorm Life

I live off campus but UMSL offers everything from dorms, to apartments, to a gated community.

    Academic Rigor

The teachers have current real-world experience they strive to ensure that students are prepared for the real world.

    Tips for prospective students

Be prepared for class. Take advantage of your teacher's office hours.

    In three sentences

    What to do for fun

There are lots of clubs and organizations that you can get involved in. The Greek life on campus is awesome. It's not very big so it is easy to get to know pretty much everyone in all the houses. Since UMSL is in St. Louis and Metrolink accessible things off campus are really easy to find as well.

    Food and Dining

The food is ok. The dining hall on south campus gets old after a while, and the meals are so expensive. I think the meal plan is a rip off. $1600 for 4 months? What 120 lb. girl can eat that much food? None of them.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are the BEST. Living in the dorms allows you to meet so many new people. It is impossible not to make friends if you live in the dorms. It is kind of expensive but totally worth it. There are also lots of scholarships out there to help with the cost.

    Academic Rigor

The Honors College has amazing classes. They are challenging but very interesting as well. Some of the other classes on north campus aren't as stimulating...

    Tips for prospective students

Apply early and for all of the scholarships! There are so many things you can do on campus, so make sure you get involved. It is a GREAT way to meet new people!

    In three sentences

UMSL is a great school to go to. The opportunities at this school are phenomenal because there are so many clubs to join and people to meet. The only downside is the fact that it is a commuter school.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many student organizations for the students to get involved in. And if there isn't a club that interests you, then you can start your own club, and UMSL will give you a specific set budget to start off the group, given that you have enough people to start the club.

    Bang for the buck

There are also various labs around campus if you need additional help, or when the professor is unavailable.

    Tips for prospective students

Some of the classes can be tough, especially some of the chemistry and biology classes, so be prepared to study hard. However, all the professors are willing to help, so don't be afraid to ask for help. Also, try joining a study group, if you study better with your peers, as this will help a lot in the long run. But don't forget to have fun along the way :)

    In three sentences

UMSL is a very diverse college. To help the students improve themselves and their study techniques, regular workshops are offered at no cost. The teachers are really helpful and always willing to help their students, as well as extra study sessions when exams are close. It is a good college for those looking for a home away from home, as the tuition rate isn't as high as some of the other colleges in the area.

    Campus Safety

UMSL is the safest campus in Missouri. They have many Metropolitan Police stations and have security within the campus. If you are afraid of walking alone, you can even have a police officer accompany you.

    Greek Life

There are many sororities and frats located on campus such as Sigma Pi, ZTA, Delta, Sigma Tau, and many others. They usually have many parties so if you're a party person, this should be fun!

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs on campus such as Students of Service, Pre-Optometry Club, Bio club, Chem club, Colleges Against Cancer, Bible Study, Golden Key Membership, Vietnam Student Association, Muslim Student Association, International club and many others.

    What to do for fun

There are many events on campus and you will get emails about them. There are also parties that are hosted by the Frats and Sororities that you may want to attend. There are also volleyball and basketball tournaments that you might go to. These and many other events are very fun especially when you are with your friends.

    Food and Dining

UMSL has many places that you can eat, there is a Subway on campus as well as a cafeteria called the NOSH. The NOSH has a variety of foods from fast food, soups, coffee/tea, to stir fry and sushi. There is also another place called the Provincial House and this is like a buffet. You only pay twelve dollars and can order as many things as you wish. They have a great amount of dishes, from breakfast, to lunch to dinner and dessert.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life at UMSL is great. People are helpful and there is a store within the dorms which allows you to purchase food for when you're hungry. There is a library located by the dorms, so if you can't concentrate in your room you can always go to the library. Also the dorms have a residential adviser and you can talk to them about any issues you have. There are many activities hosted at the dorms and you are welcome to attend. There is also a kitchen and laundry so you can avoid taking your clothes to a local dry clean.

    Academic Rigor

UMSL has a great academic rigor. The classes are of university level and it all depends on the type of course you will be taking. For example if you are taking science classes, it might seem hectic because of all the terminology you will have to know, but English on the other hand requires elaborating on a topic. In other words, each course has its own difficulties and it all depends on the amount of time you put into your studies.

    Tips for prospective students

When starting your college career, stay focused and avoid slacking off. Many freshman come to college with the perspective of a high school student, always remember college is more challenging because you are on your own. In high school teachers would often remind you of homework and let you finish late assignments, college requires you to be independent. There is no such thing as reminders, unless the professor is kind enough to do so and all work must be turned in on time.

    In three sentences

University of Missouri-Saint Louis is affordable, and you will get the same quality education as you would in any other university. UMSL has the safest campus surrounded by Metropolitan police. Greek Life

I strongly suggest anyone to Greek Life. I will be bias, but in the time that I have attended this university, a home has been built for me within this community. Students looking to get involved and socialize, this is the right option. I have been nothing but satisfied with my decision to go Greek and it will benefit me in years to come.

    What to do for fun

I am involved in Greek Life where I try to remain social through athletics, food, and other campus activities. I enjoy down time as much as anyone, but I would rather be up moving around than sit around and do nothing. There is not too much to do off campus, given the location, but it is 10 minutes from the biggest park in the Midwest and less than 15 minutes from downtown St. Louis and St. Charles.

    Food and Dining

The dorm food is better than most non-Division I universities, but might be a little on the expensive side. When living in the dorms, you are required to purchase a meal plan, which is about half of the universities tuition. They recently just added two cafes that accommodate to the different campuses UMSL has, but are packed with mediocre food and many packaged items. In the Student center, they have a mini kitchen for homemade items, a chicken / grill place, as well as a Subway which is rarely topped by anything else on campus.

    Dorm Life

The dorm life here is what you make of it. There are plenty of activities around the building and many great faces. However, you need to have a student id that will swipe you in to the building, check in at the front desk with it, use it to access each level (only your key car will get you in to your specific level, no others) and then finally to get in to you respective suite -then a door key if you locked your room.

    Academic Rigor

Professors in every department strive to challenge the students. In my discipline, individuals are taught to think outside of the box and push critical / practical thinking. I spend about a hour outside of the classroom for each hour that I sit in one working on homework, studying, or upcoming projects.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to classes. Just because you feel like you know the material, most of anything in life is showing up on a scheduled time. Instead of breaking the habit of routine, stick to your plan and show up.

    In three sentences

Valued university with professors that will compare to any other institution, students feel welcome when each enters a classroom. The academic demand for each class is manageable to where students feel comfortable in keeping a part time job. The University of Missouri - St. Louis keeps its campus clean and staff as well as faculty support students and challenge them to always better themselves.

UMSL offers four different housing opportunities that all have different selling points. Oak hall has suite style living of four bedrooms and one shared bathroom, it also has one communal kitchen, gym, laundry room, and game room that service the entire hall. It¢s a great option that allows for small class sizes and a true liberal arts style of school. It also has its own scholarship options available for both school and housing.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is typical of what you would expect. It may be crowded and noisy at times. The dorms do remain clean and safe.

    Campus Safety

I feel completely safe in the day, but honestly I don't know how I'd feel at night because of the areas nearby. However, they were rated the third safest school in Missouri, so they may have excellent protection.

    Greek Life

There are a lot of sororities.

    What to do for fun

This is a big commute school, but I know a lot of people attend the games.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure all of your needed information is filled out and sent to UMSL. Prepare for a lot of foreign professors. It's challenging, in a good way.

    In three sentences

I would give UMSL a 7/10, The price is affordable and the loans they offer are very capable of doing for someone who does not have money like me. The professors are pretty good-they teach challenging courses. The atmosphere has a hardworking feel to it within the students.

    Clubs and Activities

I am a member and president of the Association of Student Anthropologists and there are many, many other clubs to join.

    Bang for the buck

I feel the education is worth every penny from this college.

    What to do for fun

I'm a non-traditional student so my fun isn't very college related. I'm not really sure what is around the area to do for fun.

    Food and Dining

The food is pretty good, but I think is a bit overpriced for some things. The dining area on the North campus outside The Nosh is large but can fill up. They have a Subway, Einstein's Bagels and Starbucks on campus as well as dining on the South campus to which I have never been. There are plenty of fast food and other restaurants near by and a grocery store too.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in any dorms or campus housing.

    Academic Rigor

UMSL expects the best out of their students. They have a great tutoring program, and great writing lab online and academic expectations. If a student falls below a 2.0 they are placed on academic probation and have to attend 4 sessions with an advisor to discuss what may have gone wrong, what you can do to help things and then following up throughout the semester. You are also expected to take 3 semesters to foreign language, which is more then most other schools.

    Tips for prospective students

Not located in the best part of St. Louis, but I never feel unsafe on campus at any time. There is public transportation, the metro link, that we get free semester passes to ride with tuition, that stops at both North and South campus. You are required to take 3 semesters of a foreign language so if you can try to transfer those in.

    In three sentences

Amazing! UMSL is everything I have been looking for in a school since I began attending college. The teachers, my advisors, and even the students are great.

UMSL is great for students, whether part time or full time, that want to learn. UMSL does not focus on sports.

    Bang for the buck

UMSL has the lowest cost for tuition in the area. It is worth the cost of an education.

    What to do for fun

The campus has the Metro on campus. It will go straight to down town St. Louis. For fun I go to the baseball games, the Arch, Zoo, Forest Park. There are many attractions new UMSL and are free to get in, including the Art and History Museum. I go to their free lectures on archaeology.

    Food and Dining

In the North campus, there are many options available. There is pizza, salad, sandwiches, fried food, subway, and more. Most of the food reminds me of cafeteria food, greasy and sometimes old, but I do have a degree in culinary so I could just be bias to my cooking. I usually get subway if I don't bring in my own food.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are located very close to campus. It is beneficial for some but I chose to live off campus because I wanted my son to go to a school more in the country.

    Academic Rigor

Anthropology is a very wide area to study. There are many subfields that you must learn about to graduate. Going through these subfields might be difficult to some but it also opens up new paths of interests. Without taking the required classes, I would have never known how intriguing anthropology can be.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking for a Bachlor's in Anthropology, UMSL is a good place to go. There are a varitey of staff that is willing to help you through your years here. They help with independent research, interships, and continuing your education further.

There is a building called Provincial House, it is rumored to be a former asylum. It is very creepy so for halloween they turn it into a free haunted house.

    Food and Dining

The food here is ok. Not the best but for the most part its convenient

    Dorm Life

Umsl has their very own police department designated to the safety of their staff and students. If there is type of criminal or suspicious activity on the campus, the department will send out a text message and email to all the students and staff letting them aware of the situation. Even if they have not confirmed a suspicious situation as being a threat they will shut down that part of the campus and will not let anyone in or around for their own safety. They do an awesome job with keeping the campus safe for everyone that attends it around the clock.

    Clubs and Activities

This 4 year institution offers a wide variety of clubs and activities to be involved in while you attend class at the college. With an on campus security and police force I feel very safe while on school grounds both day and night.

    Greek Life

Greek life in the Midwest is a deterrent and distraction from good grades often. As a former brother in the bond of Phi Delta Theta - MO Alpha Chapter, I know the work and dedication it takes to be immursed in greek life. It's refreshing to be at a school that is solely built for the best education money can buy without the distractions of being 70% greek affiliated.

    Clubs and Activities

There is almost a club for everything.

Great for these types of students

Students who are coming out of a career in law enforcement or the military and are trying to elevate their lives. Also a great school for parents like me.

    Bang for the buck

Best education for the price in the Midwest both graduate and undergraduate.

    What to do for fun

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

Very critically thinking based. You will not succeed at UMSL if you don't allow yourself to think objectively and subjectively about the material.

    Tips for prospective students

From the minute you get to UMSL, hit the ground running, know your teachers, and earn every single point that is offered to you. The more you give the university in effort, the more they will give you in success in return.

    In three sentences

Umsl gave me a second chance at getting my bachelors degree in a field that fit my life skills and previous training. What to do for fun

Whether you live on campus or commute, there are different events and activities going on every week hosted by different student organizations on campus. UMSL has just recently broken ground on a new Recreation Center which the students voted on for the campus. Beyond the campus the city of St. Louis offers a variety of free and inexpensive activities for everyone.

    Food and Dining

UMSL offers two different dining halls; both are catered by Coco-Cola and Sodexo. But a student's dining options are not limited to these alone. UMSL also features popular franchises like Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Einstein's Bagels, and Subway to provide students with a variety of eateries that satisfy any appetite.

    Dorm Life

UMSL offers a variety of opportunities to live on campus, depending on the student's age and budget. From traditional suite-style residence halls to apartment style complexes, the university is constantly pushing forward to create a greater sense of community on campus.

    Academic Rigor

Despite UMSL's size and insignificant amount of influence on collegiate recruitment, it is a substantial research university whose degrees carry considerable weight in the occupational world, especially in St. Louis. The courses can be demanding, but the professors are always willing to work with their students. Nevertheless, the rigor of the courses thoroughly equip the students to excel in their future careers.

    Tips for prospective students

Although professors may not keep attendance or grade every homework assignment, arrive on time with your work completed. This is your education and your future that you are paying for, so do not throw your money away due to laziness and procrastination. Never hesitate to ask for help from peers or from your professors: no one is against you.

    In three sentences

The University of Missouri - St. Louis is continually progressing, with new opportunities for students to get involved and to make a difference in almost every discipline. The instructional methods used by UMSL professors also suggests that they are constantly cultivating their approaches to better meet their students needs and to equip them for success. Regardless of whether you commute or live on campus, it is easy to feel at home at UMSL.

    What to do for fun

Nothing. The activities they do have are okay but other than that nothing. If you money to spend there is something to do but not cheap.

    Food and Dining

The Nosh is great but is on North campus. Dinning food on south is really nasty there are some good things but nasty. Nothing is cook everything is microwave. The C-store is not open on the weekends you will starve because everything closes earlier or not open.

    Dorm Life

Oak is a mess and is the worst place to live. Only one dorm building the other are apartments and cost to much. In oak there is a kitchen but it is never clean and looks like it has not been clean since the building was build.

    Campus Safety

Good campus safety, the campus police are always available.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Mirthday is celebrated at UMSL every spring. It's a sort of carnival day with live music.

    Bang for the buck

I think UMSL is very reasonably priced, and many scholarships are available.

    What to do for fun

You're in St Louis, so there is plenty to do. On campus there are usually things going on, such as movie nights or dances or pool parties. Off campus is the city of St Louis, where students have plenty of opportunities for shopping, live music, etc.

    Food and Dining

I am vegetarian, so for me the food is the worst part about living on campus. Very few vegetarian meals exist, and the food at the dining hall for the students that live on campus is not very good anyway. Food on North Campus is better, although the problem of few vegetarian meals is also present there.

    Dorm Life

I am really enjoying living in Oak Hall. I feel like I am making many more friends than I would if I was a commuter, and it's great to have a supportive community around all of the time.

    Academic Rigor

Easy classes certainly exist at the school, but I am majoring in Biology as an Honors student and my classes have so far been very rigorous and engaging. The tests in my science courses have been difficult, and the Honors College requires that students write very frequent papers based on a large amount of reading.

    Tips for prospective students

Always be ready to meet new people and make the most of any opportunities that might come your way. There are some great research possibilities with various faculty members, for instance.

    In three sentences

UMSL has fantastic faculty, especially in the Honors College, Biology Department, and Music Department, in my experience. The campus used to be a country club, so it is very beautiful. On-campus living provides great opportunities for making new friends.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I am not sure there are any unusual traditions but there is a room that looks industrial with graffiti where they hold events.

    Bang for the buck

Unfortunately they keep raising the price of going here so that is why it is not 5 stars but overall I think it is a pretty decent price for a university.

    What to do for fun

UMSL offers many activities per week which all vary.

    Food and Dining

The food is relatively good. Pizza Hut, Honor's College, Subway are the best options since they are lower price for better food.

    Dorm Life

I can't say what the dorm life is like other than they offer a lot of activities.

    Academic Rigor

I would say that UMSL is a difficult school to some degree. The hardest part is all of the due dates and keeping them straight. It is important to keep some type of calendar.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not be afraid to talk to other students. Most of the time you will have something in common with someone even if that is just that you are a new student.

    In three sentences

Overall I believe this college is like any other college. I am in the Education program so the counselors are giving me the run around since they don't know the answers to my questions. Everyone is really friendly on campus.
