Great for these types of students

The University of New Haven was a great choice for my college studies. They have the program I was looking for and many perks such as small class size, and individual tutoring whenever it’s needed. UNH is a great school for any student who wants the perfect balance of a challenging curriculum and active social life.

    Tips for prospective students

The trick to success is balancing your time. I found myself waiting to do my work until the day before it was due and that habit was quickly broken, the assignments are to complex and time consuming to be put off to the last day. Instead I’m trying to write everything on my board in my room according to when its due and every night finish at least half of an assignment that’s due for the next class.

    Bang for the buck

The University of New Haven has one of the best forensic science programs developed by the famous forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee. The Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Science provides an intense curriculum taught by professionals in their areas of study. In order to get their students off on the right foot, UNH gives the freshmen in the forensic science program a demanding workload. The college campus continues to expand by adding new residence halls, expanding cafeteria space and more recently the development of a new forensics research center and laboratory. Along with these expansions UNH offers living learning communities where you get to live with peers of your own major. UNH delivers when it comes to the education of its students, so you certainly get what you pay for.

    Am enjoying being here

UNH offers a wide range of clubs and extracurricular activates as well as entertainment on weekends and various other activities on campus. I joined UNH’s Frisbee club at the club fair and quickly became part of the team. Everyone was so encouraging and inviting I was more than happy to become a member of the UNH Blue Steel. Here it’s all about having fun, which is what any sport should be like. If you can't find something to do then your not looking hard enough, their is always an event or program to attend.

    Am learning a lot

I’m not sure what I exactly expected college to be like but I find it to be much harder than I originally anticipated. I’m taking more classes and more credits then many of my friends back home who went onto college. The course load for the classes can be overwhelming but when I plan my time accordingly I find that the material is easier to learn.

-like small campus -don't mind the not so nice environment -not big partiers -don't get bored easily

    Bang for the buck

I was disappointed with the atmosphere however the classes and the professors are worth it.

    Am enjoying being here

Okayy, this school makes it sound more interesting then it really is. The people are nice and the classes are good, however the campus is kinda boring. It is very small and right now a lot of construction. This is also not the best area to live in. There have been lock downs and such on campus, students have been robbed at gun point etc. There are campus police and they seem to do there best, and they will send out txt messages to students about what is currently going on. It is just an such an expensive school and financial aid people are horrible! I was very disappointed and its too much for me, since I am paying for it myself, I'd rather be somewhere where I'd be more excited about the school.

    Am learning a lot

The professors are great!!! CJ students try and get Professor Maxwell.

Great for these types of students

New Haven is a great school for people who live close to new haven and will commute or live on campus during the week and then leave on the weekends. It is even better for those who are fire science majors, criminal justice majors and forensic science majors. Everything else can be found at other universities that have better programs.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not sweat the college application process. Getting into New Haven was very easy. Do well in your senior year of high school, be involved in school and out of school. Study but don't over study for the SAT and ACT and you will do fine. The college application process is overwhelming if you make it overwhelming. there is a school out there for everyone so don't sweat, you will find it eventually and be successful.

    Bang for the buck

It is a very expensive school. If you are not going to follow a specific major then this is not the school for you. This is a great school for fire science, forensic science and criminal justice. You can get better bang for the buck from a public university for other majors that are at better schools. I am one of those in a specific major here and that's why i came here.

    Am enjoying being here

I do enjoy being here at the University of new haven. I am heavily involved in a few clubs and am doing an internship as well. There are many clubs to choose from and many activities that happen on a daily basis to help keep students busy. However what the university fails to tell perspective students is that the campus becomes a ghost town on the weekend because the majority of students live near by or are commuters, if you do not like it being quiet on campus on the weekends then this is not the place for you. it is also not a heavy party school, if you are a partying type of person then this school is not for you either. However i am neither a party person nor like quiet so the only reason i like it here is because of the clubs that i am involved in.

    Am learning a lot

I am learning a fair amount in my first semester here at the university of new haven. Classes aren't too hard at first but have become much harder. The professors do care about their students but some of the professors are way past their teaching years. Overall its a good learning experience having smaller classes and getting to know your professors well. Its also easy to fall behind so it is important to keep up with your work. Take advantage of all the resources possible. I did not do that my first few weeks and am now regretting not doing anything about it and it is time for an intervention in my school work. The homework isn't too bad as long as you pay attention in class.

Great for these types of students

It's a really great science and criminal justice school, so if you're interested in those majors, consider looking at U of New Haven.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're thinking about going here, don't fail freshman experience, and study for all your exams and you'll do great!

    Bang for the buck

Although it is more on the expensive side, it's worth every penny.

    Am enjoying being here

The University Of New Haven is a wonderful school. Their best programs are forensic science, criminal justice and fire science. They are one of the best schools for those 3 programs. There is always so much to do on campus. There are movie trips, parties, there is a mall down the road and clubs downtown.

    Am learning a lot

The University Of New Haven has great professors that'll make you interested in what you're learning and has many interesting classes.

    none

    Tips for prospective students

dont go here unless its for criminal justice, or even music tech

    Bang for the buck

if i could make this a 0/5 i would. this school is an absolute rip off, even with all the financial aid they give you, and trust me they give out a lot of money even to the non-deserving students, so dont think your reward is special

    Did enjoy being here

i really did not enjoy my time there i spent 1 year at this school. everyone goes home on the weekends, and if your not in a frat, or go out every week, your just sitting in your dorm.

    Did learn a lot

i was able to learn somewhat from the professors of meaningful classes, but some were classes that were just not very good

Who feel more comfortable being on a smaller campus

    Tips for prospective students

If you're looking for a community sense campus then this school is the right place also there are so many clubs and organizations. No matter what college you decided to attend, make sure you get involved somehow.

    Bang for the buck

It's a bit pricy but there are many scholarships out there. If you get good grades and is involved then you will most likely receive one or more scholarship.

    Am enjoying being here

I really enjoy meeting new people here, they are so nice and welcoming. The faculty and staff here try to make you feel right at home so you are comfortable and they are there for you because they want to see you succeed.

    Am learning a lot

The classes are a good size so it's easy to communicate with your professors.

Just like with any college, if you're willing to put in the effort to learn and you're willing to make the best out of your experiences, UNH is for you.

    Tips for prospective students

Make friends. During the first two weeks, meet everyone you can. Even if you're shy, try to put yourself out of your comfort zone and just smile at everyone you pass. If someone asks you to hang out, don't pass that opportunity up! It's during the first month that everyone is looking for friends - because everyone is in the same lonely, far-from-home boat. Just try to make friends. Join clubs! And make it to the gym every once in a while so you don't gain the Freshman 15. Don't eat pizza for every single meal. Don't spend all of your dining dollars during the first two months. Go to any and all free programs that the school sponsors! I promise they're fun. Stay up and watch movies all night with your floor mates every once in a while; it's a fun bonding experience. Bring board games with you! Apples to Apples is popular, and I promise that on those nights where it's boring, it'll liven the place up a lot.

    Bang for the buck

UNH is expensive; no one can deny that. For CJ/forensic/music/education majors, it's definitely worth the cost because UNH is such a good school for those majors and has special programs that those majors can take part in - such as the 4+1 Education program where Education majors can attend UNH for 5 years and get their master's degree.

    Am enjoying being here

I absolutely adore UNH. The campus is small, personable, and friendly. The food isn't as bad as a lot of other colleges that visited when I was applying as a high school senior. For the most part, everyone is friendly and polite - holding the doors, etc. The dorms are nice and clean. Plus, I made some friends for life!

    Am learning a lot

All of my professors so far have been extremely kind and helpful. With some teachers, it takes initiative, but once you put in the effort to get help, any of the professors are willing to help you in anyway that they can. On the first day of the class, they give you their syllabus; on this syllabus, they give you what their open door/office hours, and they love when students come visit them during these hours. The classes are challenging, but they're manageable.

    Forensics Majors

    Tips for prospective students

If you're a forensics major then I would say that this school is perfect for you, otherwise, they don't concentrate on you as a student.

    Bang for the buck

    Definitely not worth your money.

    Am enjoying being here

The campus is dead, and theres nothing much to do. If you want things to do you have to go downtown. Its depressing to sit around all the time with nothing to do, especially if you don't have the money to do it.

    Am learning a lot

I'm learning everything I learned in high school all over again, and its basically a waste of my money.

Great for these types of students

The University of New Haven is great for students who want a small campus with a great community/family like feel to it. This school is for students who want to excel academically and get a hands on education.

    Tips for prospective students

College is not just about work. It is about discovering yourself and preparing for the future that you want for yourself whatever that might be. Your future is entirely up to you.

    Bang for the buck

At the University of New Haven you get what you pay for. The school tries to accommodate to everyone needs and wants. I couldn't be happier with the way my schedule is set up, my professors, and the staff in general. The University of New Haven has made my transition to college so smooth. The quality of the school and education is phenomenal. Coming from a public high school it is easy to see the difference in public school and private school education. You are not just a number at The University of New Haven.

    Am enjoying being here

I couldn’t be happier with my freshman year college experience. It has been quiet an adventure for me both academically and socially. Despite the fact that I miss home, that the food isn’t the best, having to share a bathroom with other girls, doing excessive amounts of work, meeting deadlines, and the list of complains can continue forever but I rather look on the bright side of it all. It makes the experience much more worth it and easy to go on with which leads to how I also can’t wait to see what is in store for the following semester and the next three years after that.

    Am learning a lot

I can say that college is definitely different from high school but at the end of the day it is all about how much effort you put into your work. The University of New Haven has so much to offer. There's tutoring readily available, mentors for us that live in our residential buildings, and professors that are always a call/email away.

like smaller campus, yet not too small criminal justice and forensic science students not a big party school

    Tips for prospective students

definitely get involved be welcoming to new people and friends (don't be shy) make sure you get help in a class before it's too late to do anything about grades

    Bang for the buck

It's rather expensive to attend, but if you get the grades you can get scholarships. There are tons of scholarships available, you just have to put in the work to win them. Also almost all of the school sponsored trips off campus are free. They are able to do this because of how much they charge to attend the university. They give you free bus passes that work all year and put on tons of on campus activities.

    Am enjoying being here

I love the campus. If you get involved on campus, you will love it. The people that say they hate it here are the ones that sit in their rooms and never try to get involved or make new friends. It's college, get out there and meet people.

    Am learning a lot

The teachers are really nice and help out a lot. Also if the teacher is unavailable, there is a peer tutoring center and center for learning resources which contains tons of faculty that just go to the library to help students. The best thing is that all the tutoring help is free! Also, in the dorms they have Academic Peer Mentors that are there to help you with anything you need.

Great for these types of students

UNH is great for students looking to major in criminal justice, forensic science, engineering, music industry, or fire science.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't let the opinion of others ruin your perception of this school. Come check out UNH for yourself! UNH is a diverse academic school and I am certain you will fit right in.

    Bang for the buck

The school is quite expensive but I definitely believe it is worth the cost. A lot of people like to complain about UNH but I say college is what you make it. If you sit around in your room all day or do the same thing everyday of course it is going to be boring! If you go to the events around campus, and are open to new things I will guarantee you that you too will enjoy your life here at UNH.

    Am enjoying being here

The University of New Haven is my home away from home. I wouldn't want to be at any other school. There is always something going on around campus and I've had so many amazing experiences. I have made so many friends from all over the world. I have also gotten to travel around the coast for little to no money thanks to this amazing school.

    Am learning a lot

Although snow days are fun, I actually look forward to going to class! I learn so much at every class session. The professors are all well experienced in the fields I am studying and incorporate their experiences with the information in the textbooks. The classes sizes are small so it is easier to concentrate, ask questions and get one on one attention.

Great for these types of students

all types of students but they have an exceptional forensic science program. also the music industry program is a big deal as well.

    Tips for prospective students

i say if your looking at this school definitely take a tour. the school loves doing them and usually its students so you get a first hand experience. also the campus is small so if you like the homey feeling away from home its great. honestly from any one building to the next it takes you 5 minutes or less to get there.

    Bang for the buck

ok UNH is expensive but honestly your getting what you pay for. the food is delicious on some days and the ac and heat is amazing. also we go on sooooo many trips all over the new england area and in the tristate... and its all free (well included). all you must do is show up at the leaving time and your good to go.

    Am enjoying being here

I LOVE UNH. when i first went to this school, being an african american i was scared that there wasnt going to be any diversity, but boy was i wrong there are plenty types of people here and numerous different clubs so whatever you like or your interested in there's a club for that ! and if not they have no problem with you starting one.

    Am learning a lot

my course load wasnt unbearable for me. i actually enjoyed it. there are ALOT of resource's though if you feel you need help with anything.

    Campus Safety

Campus police is there if you need them and there are a lot of campus pd boxes around the school in case of emergency.

    Clubs and Activities

There are lots of clubs. You just have to find them and make sure they fit with your schedule

Great for these types of students

Great for Forensics and Criminal Justice

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Every winter there is a snowball fight between all the resident halls.

    Bang for the buck

It's a little pricy but it may be worth the cost if your major is very specific or if it's your dream school.

    What to do for fun

The Yale area is where you will find the nightlife. In Milford, there is a local mall to go to for movies, shopping, and some dining. The school has a lot of trips and activities planned that involve going to New York, Six Flags, etc.

    Food and Dining

The food is either really good or flavorless (but consumable). Thankfully, they have the usual hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, pizza, pasta, and salads to fall back on. The dining area itself is not nearly big enough, especially during dinner hours when everyone comes to eat at the same time.

    Dorm Life

Each housing facility has its flaws, but the real problem is that they do not have enough housing facilities (especially for upperclassmen).

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the professor and the material, some classes will be harder than others.

    In three sentences

It is a very good college for those seeking a degree in Forensic Science or Criminal Justice. Although there is not a lot to do, they try to arrange various activities to involve everyone. The professors are nice and are there to really help the students learn the material.

    What to do for fun

there are many programs going on around campus. students receive a weekly email notifying them of the activities that have been planned. some programs include: sand art, personalized items, pictures, free fish, film viewings, comedians, hypnotists and much more. in addition, the german club building hosts friday night dances for all students for about $2.00. there is always something to do with your friends.

    Food and Dining

the main dining hall on campus is bartels hall. it is a comfortable place to dine with friends. there are many choices to pick from here, although they are the same choices everyday except for the main meals. the food is good, but many students become tired of it after awhile and may choose to go to one of the other on campus dining facilities. these include sandella's (wraps, paninis, quesadillas, etc.), the grill (hamburgers, fries, chicken sandwiches) and pandini's (pastas, pizza, salads). there is also a couple cafes: jazzman's, hazelnut cafe and a dunkin' donuts. incoming freshmen have to get the unlimited meal plan. the student id serves as your checkout key. one meal is one swipe. the unlimited meal plan allows a person to be able to have as many meals as they desire for one swipe during the breakfast and dinner hours. lunch is paid for using your predetermined amount of dining dollars, also on your id. when using the id at the other dining facilities, the meal is paid for up to a value of $5.60, anything over the value is paid for using dining dollars.

    Dorm Life

the dorm buildings nice and include a couple new buildings. the only major set back for students especially freshmen is that they are tripled in rooms that are meant for only two students due to an overwhelming influx of students. there still is plenty of space, though. other than that, you can find the dorms and your rooms to be a comfortable place to hang with friends, do homework or just relax. the housing system for upperclassmen is based on a lottery system, so it may be difficult to get the dorms you want. remember: housing at unh is not guaranteed all four years and you may have to commute or rent an apartment with some friends.

    Academic Rigor

academics here is challenging but completely manageable. the university offers numerous methods of academic aid to those who are struggling or just want to maintain their grades. an average workload can include about 1.5 to 2 hours of out of the classroom work a day.

    Tips for prospective students

the university of new haven is an excellent school for a forensic science program since it is one of few colleges that are accredited. however, the down side to this school is that there are so many incoming freshmen that housing is guaranteed for only them. housing is based on a lottery system so unless you are okay with commuting from home or a rented apartment, take this into heavy consideration.

    In three sentences

the university of new haven is an excellent school for a forensic science program since it is one of few colleges that are accredited. academically, the school thrives in the sciences, so a science major will feel at home here. the location of the school could be a little better but the campus is a good size for those looking for a community feel.

Okay, so UNH is a bit expensive. But honestly, I think I am getting every penny's worth!

    Am enjoying being here

I rarely ever go home. UNH has so many clubs here, and if we don't have one that you would enjoy, you can start your own! Not many universities offer that. We have so many fun activities planned throughout the entire week, not just on the weekends either.

    Am learning a lot

While some classes may not seem useful to take, they really help round out your education. I have learned so much here. I have taken more credits here than most students I know elsewhere. All of our teachers here have real world experience in their fields, so it's not like you're learning from a textbook either.

Great for these types of students

Students who like to stand out from the crowd.

    Bang for the buck

The school is a bit pricey but they are excellent at awarding scholarships.

    Will enjoy being here

The school is fairly small but the campus still feels like being on a huge college campus. I love this because while I can get the personal advice from teachers that I look for I also feel like I am meeting new people every day.

    Will learn a lot

With tons of majors to choose from I look forward to learning everything that I want to. University of New Haven also has an option to create your own major which will be useful when deciding which entrepreneurial career I want to pursue.

Great for these types of students

-more comfortable in a smaller school environment -not big partyers

    Tips for prospective students

-join an LLC for your freshman year -take as many tours, visits, and preview days as possible (you will get more and more questions answered, and get more comfortable about the whole new college experience) -if you have a question about ANYTHING ask. i have yet to meet someone on campus who is not nice, patient, and knowledgeable about answering questions and even if they do not have an answer for you they will find someone who will

    Bang for the buck

i would say that if your major is either criminal justice, forensics, or fire science then you definitely get major bang for your buck. the school focuses a lot of their time and efforts into those programs. if those are not your majors then you have to really be confident of your major choice to stay here. i am not one of any of those majors but i am very excited for psychology/Pre-elementary education that i think that UNH is well worth my time and money.

    Am enjoying being here

my freshman year i participated in a living learning community. these communities are made up of freshman that have the same major as you that you live with. i was in the pre-education LLC and it helped to find and even have friends that are readily accessible in your dorm to do homework together, pick classes together, and talk about and ask/answer questions together because more than likely those questions are the same as yours. by participating in this it was easier to find friends and fit-in and feel at home when i live so far away.

    Am learning a lot

I am definitely learning a lot. the classes that are specifically aimed for my major which is psychology have helped me. they are challenging so as to get me to think outside of the box but at the same time im learning. i like that there is a core curriculum here. these classes are the basic high school classes that cover the normal classes like science, math, and english. by completing these first before my major requirement classes it gives me a solid base to build on.

    Bang for the buck

From the looks of it might be true.

    Will enjoy being here

Since I was introduced to this school on a field trip from Waterbury, CT, I didn't know what to expect. I heard it was a horrible school, it wasn't friendly, kind of dangerous, and had barely any school activities. Well, that was half correct. When me and the rest of party arrived at the gates of UNH, we saw that most of the school was sunder construction. I figured it was because of the tax payer's money. The Tour guide for our scheduled meeting came and said the reasoning for the school's construction. He said it wasn't from tax payer's money, but from the budget plan they set years ago and raised 10 million from fundraising. With that money they raised a new recreation center, improved housing, and a whole variety of upgrades from their efforts. You can see the videos that are posted of Cappex about their recent additions. It's very advanced, and impressive.

    Will learn a lot

DISREGARD THE RATING! I'm not sure, I haven't investigated.

It's a beautiful campus, in the hear of New Haven. Students will always have something to do, and someone to be with.

    Will learn a lot

    Campus Safety

The surrounding area is very sketchy. There is many safety features though. You can sign up for texts about dangerous situations as well as school cancellations from the campus police. You can always ask for a police escort for no cost if you feel in danger at any time.

    Greek Life

I am apart of Greek Life on Campus. I love it. However there is not Greek Housing which is a little disappointing. There are great sorority's and fraternities on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

There are not very many clubs but its easy to create a club if there is not enough interest.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for only Criminal Justice and Forensic Science students.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Jazzman's coffee shop is very popular on campus and has some good food.

    Bang for the buck

The school is very expensive with very little financial aid. The housing situation is horrible.

    What to do for fun

Clubbing is very popular at UNH. People go to downtown New Haven in order to find things to do. Otherwise there isn't much unless you are apart for the Greek Life.

    Food and Dining

The food is pretty good for college food. Most people tend to avoid Bartel's food though.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are very nice and easy to meet new people. You are only guaranteed housing for freshman year and the rest of the years its VERY VERY hard to get housing.

    Academic Rigor

The engineering classes are very hard and most you have to teach the material to yourself because the professors are horrible. You have to work hard to get the good teachers who know what they are doing.

    Tips for prospective students

I would advise future students to look at other schools because there are many faults to UNH. The housing situation sucks unless you are a freshman. Many people in my year didn't get housing for their sophomore year and didn't get there money back.

    In three sentences

The campus and class sizes are very small. The students are great and there are some great teachers. The neighborhood is very poor and not the safest.

    What to do for fun

There is a lot to do in the area surrounding UNH, whether you are going into downtown New Haven or even farther, into NYC. In New Haven and West Haven, there's shopping, movies, restaurants, music arenas, etc. On campus you can join lots of clubs and there's always open areas to hang out. My favorite part is that every weekend the school provides some sort of activity to entertain students since most students stay on campus. Sometimes there will be free trips to amusement parks, theater shows, movies, bowling, etc. Or there will be parties on campus at the German Club (the on-campus event hall). Once a week, there is a free movie night where a current movie is always playing (two years ago we watched paranormal activity two two weeks after it was released into theaters). If you're looking, you'll find something fun to do.

    Food and Dining

Personally, I really liked the food at UNH. Colleges aren't exactly praised for their home-cooked meals, but as far as college food goes, UNH was not terrible. There are multiple locations around campus to purchase food with your meal plan, including three restaurants (grilled food, Italian food, and a family restaurant). Sandellas has the most amazing paninis, pizzas, salads, soups, etc. And the cafeteria offers unlimited food for each meal and has a large variety of options, so whatever you are in the mood for, you can find there. Granted, not everything is incredibly healthy but if you are looking for nutritious food, you can find it there too.

    Dorm Life

I only lived on campus for one semester at UNH. The dorms were nice and there was room for everyone but personally, I didn't enjoy the lack of privacy that is usually standard with college dorm life. Some people love it, I didn't. Also, something I wish I knew when I was going in to UNH: on campus housing is not guaranteed all four years. The school is great about helping students find nice, affordable housing in the area, but you should be aware that you might need a back up plan for living arrangements starting your junior year.

    Academic Rigor

The academics at UNH are everything they should be. I have never had a class that was so difficult that students were destined to fail from the beginning. The courses are fair and the secret to mastering them is simple: if you do the work that is required of you and you study, you're going to pass. If you do nothing all semester, you're going to fail. It's not rocket science.

    Tips for prospective students

UNH offers a lot of great opportunities for its students, but you have to be proactive. Interested in studying abroad? I've done so twice already and I am only a junior. But no one came up to me and asked me if I wanted to go to Italy, Germany, England, Czech Republic, France, etc. I had to find out what was available for me. Now I am 20 years old and I've already been to over 10 countries! If you want to have these types of amazing college experiences, go out looking for them...don't just expect that they'll show up in your lap.

    In three sentences

University of New Haven is the perfect size if you don't want to be swallowed up at a huge state school but you also don't want a school so small that everyone knows everyone's business. You'll get a great education here, especially if you are interested in any forensic or criminal justice programs (I'm studying forensic psychology and the program is amazing). Just like any other college, your social life is what you make of it; if you want to make a bunch of friends, get involved! If you don't, hang out in your dorm.

Make sure that you really check into everything about the school. This is a good rule for any school that you are considering going to. College is a big decision, don't take it lightly.

    Bang for the buck

I always feel safe. You either see a campus police officer/car or a blue call box no matter where you are on campus, no matter what time of the day or night.

    What to do for fun

Weekends start Thursday for a lot of students. There are plenty of clubs downtown that the school provides a shuttle to. There;s a mall downtown and also another in the opposite direction that the school shuttle too. There are hookah bars and such downtown. There is ATLEAST one activity on campus for everyday of the weekend and movies on campus.

    Food and Dining

There are a million options for food. There is the main dining hall that has so many options to choose from; sandwiches, omelets, pizza, spaghetti, cereal, salad are and everyday thing with at least two special meals in addition at every meal. And there is Vegan and Vegetarian counter. There are 4 other dinning options and a grocery store on campus. Also places around like subway, pizza places, and take out places accept school card payments.

    Dorm Life

I would recommend all housing except for the honors LLC; it is too isolated from any other student population. Other than that, dorm life is the way to go. Many people who don't live on campus can be found in the dorms from time to time. The RA's are great with getting us to know each other and keeping students involved with each other during the semester. Of course there are little problems within the dorms but otherwise it is great living.

    Academic Rigor

This school strives to push different styles of learning. A professor will push papers, projects, and homework assignments that may seem too unconventional but ultimately do help you retain the material more readily. Take honors classes, they are enjoyable. There are plenty of resources like TA's, Professor Office Hours, Freshman Center and Tutoring Center if you need any assistance with any subject.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you want a smaller school because people here may know of you before you know of them. Don't be afraid to question your choice in major when you get to the school because the professors here aim to show you all you can achieve. Learn to balance between classes, extracurricular activities and fun-- its very valuable.

    In three sentences

I love CP (campus police). You'll get to know them well, no matter what!

    Greek Life

Greek life here is pretty normal. UNH Greeks do a ton of community service and I mean a ton. Almost every weekend they're at a walk or doing beach cleanup or many other things. Of course you have the typical greek parties, they're nothing you haven't already expected.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and orgs on this campus. If you don't join at least on club you are lame, and I mean that. Go to the club fair and you'll see what I mean.

    What to do for fun

UNH gives out free goldfish ALL the time!! They're always fun to have in your room as pets :)

    Food and Dining

Great food, but it does get boring after a while. Luckily we have multiple places to eat on campus so there's always a variety.

    Dorm Life

I love living on campus! The housing system sucks, but if you're lucky enough to get a room after freshman year I wouldn't pass it up.

    Academic Rigor

It always depends on your major, but forensic science is known to be the hardest on campus. The core classes that everyone takes aren't too rough, but you have to go to class and do your work.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you go to school and be responsible. Don't expect to fly by here at UNH, they won't allow it. You can always have a great time here, but you also have to do your work.

    In three sentences

UNH has a great campus community, and I love living on campus. There is always something to do on campus, if not then there's always Boston Post Road or Downtown New Haven. Housing system here is terrible though.

There are a ton of activities on campus. You can ride the bus for free to downtown New Haven for more nightlife if you feel like it. The recreation center offers many classes and sporting activities for fun.

    Food and Dining

As I said before, they don't have too much of a Greek Life, but enough to satisfy those interested.

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of clubs. There is also Greek life, just not a lot of it. They have Pride, which is like a gay straight alliance club. They have PIRO: Paranormal Investigation and Research Organization. Any club you can think of, they have.

    What to do for fun

Scope, which is an organization at our school, puts on a lot of events. their is always something to do on the weekend and Thursdays.

    Dorm Life

I had some roommate issues that had not been solved and because of this, it was hard to even stay in my own room. Some of it was my own fault, but the RA should have helped me more when I did eventually come to her. Other than that, I loved living at the dorms.

    What to do for fun

THere is lots to do. The beach is a few miles down the road. Hope on a train to New York or Boston. New Haven has a great night life. There are many theaters and performances held in the area. If you can think of it, you can probably find it around this area.

    Food and Dining

This is my one dislike of the campus. We have five dinning places on campus. But, the cafeteria is not that great. They tend to be very constant in what they serve. The cafeteria is also very same, to small, to serve all of its students in a timely fashion. So be prepared to stand in lines for awhile.

    Dorm Life

It alright. Parties aren't many on campus. Dorms are pretty good sized. Only downfall is that you are not always given housing every year.

I feel fairly safe with the police on campus and the many shuttles around to take you where you need to go--day or night. It is a small campus, which also makes it easy for the police to get to where you are if in trouble. It's pretty well lit and

For a private institution, the tuition is very reasonable. The professors are very generous with their time; they are also very supportive and understanding. It's a great place to get the college experience and not have to spend more than you, or Uncle Sam, can afford

    What to do for fun

There are parks and beaches very near by. I spend most of my time studying, but there are plenty of students who could attest to the various happenings in the area

    Food and Dining

There's plenty to choose from depending on what you like. We also have several restaurants on campus that serve specialty items. The hours are decent We have a Dunkin Donuts on campus!!!

Being a grad student, I don't feel like I'm overwhelmed, but I also don't feel like I'm learning the same material from my undergrad years. The professors in my dept (For Sci) seem to be on the same page and aren't overloaders--which is always nice.

    Tips for prospective students

We have several top-tier programs--just know what is it you want to study. College is a huge social immersion, so don't let people push you around, and don't let people get you down. But, seriously, everyone at UNH is so friendly. Just steer clear of those who aren't, and stay positive.

    What to do for fun

The mall is a great place to hang out, especially when it's cold outside. Walking around downtown New Haven is also kind of nice, but be sure to be safe and walk around with a group of people and not alone at night.

    Food and Dining

The food isn't the best, but that's kind of to be expected. The dining halls weren't open very long when I went there, and they ran out of food on multiple occasions, which really sucks if you have a class that gets out kind of late.

    Dorm Life

I did not get along with my roommates very well, but my RA was amazing and was always there for me. Don't be afraid to just hang out in your common room--you'll meet more people and that was where a lot of my friends and I hung out.

    Academic Rigor

They taught me a lot of stuff that I already knew, but it was good for some of the other kids in my classes who hadn't had the same kind of very rigorous high school education that I had. It was also kind of nice that in your freshman year, you were guaranteed to have two classes with all the same people--it made settling in easier.

    Tips for prospective students

Get yourself out there if you're really shy-it'll make the whole first year a lot better for you. Make sure that you have a place to go where you feel safe and calm--it'll help for those crazy finals weeks. And download the shuttle app on your iPhone because the shuttle was generally late when I went there.

    In three sentences

I didn't like the fact that there was no real discipline for students who broke rules in the residential halls (stealing, etc.). I also was not a huge fan of the way that they dealt with their students who needed help. It's a good place if you want a really small school that has a lot of dedicated students, but I was really disappointed in the lack of administrative support for students.

There's always something happening on campus, and there is a lot to do in all of the surrounding towns. There are clubs, bars, restaurants and shopping in Downtown New Haven and there's also the mall and other shopping centers down the Boston Post Road.

    Food and Dining

    Sodexo -____-

    Dorm Life

Dorming is fun, especially Freshman year, but it gets a bit more difficult after your Sophomore year to actually get on campus housing because of the size of the campus compared to the number of students. There are off campus apartments owned by the university that can be used though!

    Academic Rigor

Depending on the program your are a part of, the courses can become very time consuming and challenging so utilize the Center for Learning Resources in the library and the peer tutors

    Tips for prospective students

Stay on top of your work Participate in class Make sure your teacher knows you This may not be the place for you if you're a big party person Enjoy yourself

    In three sentences

UNH isn't a big party school, but they have a dedicated faculty and staff and an ever-growing curriculum. There is so much school spirit and there is actually a lot to do on and off campus. This school is filled with so many amazing and diverse people that it offers more than just an academic education, but also life education.

Great for these types of students

Adventurous, independent, and are willing to experience new cultures.

The Tuscany campus is set in the middle of the city of Prato. There is a Cathedral, train station, many places to eat, and Italian culture everywhere.

    Bang for the buck

Being abroad gave me the opportunity to become closer to the professors. There were only thirty-four students that came abroad this semester and this made it easy to have more one on one opportunities with the professors. The classes are taught with passion, because every professor is passionate about what they are teaching and have had years of experience.

    What to do for fun

The great thing about living in Europe is that the airfare is really cheap through RyanAir. During October break six of us went to Barcelona, Dublin, and Paris. It is also easy to hop on a train during the weekend and explore more of Italy. At Keller Platz they have nights where bands play and there is great music and dancing!

    Food and Dining

The study abroad program in Tuscany, Italy set up a meal voucher system. We have eight different places to eat to choose from, and they serve a variety of foods. Some of the places serve the traditional Italian meals, and then some serve more food that is more American. The food in Italy is to die for!

    Dorm Life

Living in Europe has opened my eyes to many new things, including the size of their rooms. When I first walked into my bedroom with my roommates I thought we were all going to pass out, because there are three beds stuffed into a room a little over half the size of a regular dorm room. Although it was shocking at first, I have adapted to my room and I absolutely love where I am living.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor is just what I was looking for in a school. The whole point of going to college is to learn about your passion. I have had days where there has been a lot of work that needs to be done and I have felt stressed, but then I learn from that and manage my time in a more sufficient manner.

    Tips for prospective students

Study abroad! It is an amazing experience that will change you as a person and provide you with many opportunities.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is great because not only do we have a campus police station, the officers are actual West Haven PD officers, not just regular old security officers. Also, it is their duty to pick you up if you are downtown and need a ride. You pay for that, so I know a lot of students take advantage of this when it's the middle of the night and are worried about taking the bus, shuttle, or walking.

    Greek Life

There are TONS of sororities and fraternities on campus that literally anyone can join.

    Bang for the buck

UNH is a very expensive, private university that I am beginning to wonder if it's worth the price. Although it is a great school, there are a lot of things aside from education that could use to be reviewed.

    What to do for fun

There are always events going on on campus. There are movie nights in the dorms, and they're always having some sort of event that includes free food, which is always a plus as a broke college student. And of course, being in the new haven area, there are plenty of clubs and other things downtown to keep you busy.

    Food and Dining

There are many options for food on campus. There's the regular cafeteria, Jazzmans, Sandelas, Starbucks, and Dunkin Donuts. Everywhere is pretty good, but without a meal plan it can get a little pricey.

    Dorm Life

I commute, which I enjoy, but from what I have heard of the dorms, everyone seems to really enjoy it and love the close knit community of UNH.

    Tips for prospective students

    Don't slack!

    In three sentences

All of the professors are great and really do their best to help you achieve in their courses. The administration offices including financial aid and the bursar's office were not helpful at all though with helping me stay on track with my balance and how much I owed.

Great for these types of students

People who have an interest in science, criminal justice, and forensic science careers.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I haven't seen any honestly. Maybe unusual tradition would be the blue hard hats they give out to wear during football games.

    Bang for the buck

Honestly housing is the only issue. You pay a large deposit and quite a large sum for housing overall, and there always seems to be soemthing wrong.

    What to do for fun

There are various activities held by clubs on campus, but there are also shuttles to the mall and downtown, which are honestly your best bet for what to do for fun. They are not too far away. There are shopping places, the movies, downtown New Haven. But don't expect to find too much to do in the immediate surrounding area of the school, you WILL have to travel a little, but hat's what the bus and shuttles are for.

    Food and Dining

Food is not exactly the best. Especially the main dinning hall. There are other places on campus to go to for food that are better. But having something to cook up in your dorm is recommended for when you are just plain tired of the food at the dinning hall.

    Dorm Life

Personally i live in the Honors housing so it is very different than the regular housing. I live an actual house and not the dorm buildings. I personally have enjoyed the space, privacy, and accommodations that we have.

The school is really expensive and I don't think you get everything you pay for. There are things that are just expensive and when you already pay a lot to come here you don't want to pay more. The C-Store, although convenient is really overpriced.

    Food and Dining

The main dining hall isn't the best place to get food unless you know there is a tour that day, than its a safe bet to go there. Sandellas's is probably the best food and they are fairly nice there. The Grill is good but sometimes you gotta pay attention cause their mike never seems to work. Pandini's has really good food but their service horrible, it takes forever to get your food and they are rude. Every once in a while you can get good service.

    Dorm Life

Depending on where you live can determine how nice it is. If you live in Bixler which is probably the worst for most people cause its a community bathroom and you share the room with two other people. Botwinik is a suite style so you share a bathroom with five other people. Bergami is the nicest but its also the newest. There are a lot of rules about what you can and can't have and how to act.

    Tips for prospective students

Go to class and get the boring general classes out of the way. Take computers right away to get it over with, it will probably be the worst class you will ever take. Take naps to help save you money, it sounds silly but its true.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for the type of student that isn't big on partying. It's very career oriented. It is also great of the type of student who is social. Being a small campus most students in a c;ass already know each other from other classes.

Theres rides, games, food and more.

    Bang for the buck

The University of New Haven is a wonderful school. This was my first choice in a school and I would recommend it to anyone. In fact, I love this school so much I decided to move to Connecticut. The people are so sweet and the campus is amazing.

    What to do for fun

The University of New Haven is extremely close to downtown New Haven and close to the beach. There's so much to do while at school. West Haven beach is perfect for those summer days when a student has the day off, but downtown is great for a slice of pizza and walking around town with friends.

    Food and Dining

The main dining hall is called Bartels and it is really good. Unlike most universities their food is really good. They have a deli station, grill, vegetarian station and others. Aside from Bartels there are also other food places on campus which is really good. A personal favorite is Sandella's which serves quesadilla's among other things.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life at the University of New Haven is very accommodating and safe. They have residential assistants to help with any roommate issues or dorm life issues a student may have. The rooms are very spacious and during midterms and finals there is a quiet rule. The quiet rule is wonderful because it makes sure everyone is respectful towards others.

    Academic Rigor

I honestly don't think there is any academic rigor on campus. If a student is having trouble in their classes the library has a tutoring center. The tutoring center is great because they take the time to explain anything you need and will not stop until you are completely satisfied.

    Tips for prospective students

The number one thing I would recommend to Prospective students would be to take advantage of all the academic advisors. They really are there to help and they give amazing advice and suggestions. Another tip would be to go to the library for schoolwork. There are tons of databases and librarians to help you.

    In three sentences

There are also apps that you can download onto your smartphone that once activated, will alert police with your location so they can send help.

    Food and Dining

The food is good on some days and decent on others. Bartel's dining hall has a tendency to get boring but the small variety of venues to go to keeps it interesting. There is Sandella's Flatbread Cafe, Grill 155, and Pandini's which is Italian for the most part. All choices are equally delicious and help give a variety for those days when you're not feeling Bartel's

    Dorm Life

Overall the dorms are pretty decent. There are six possible dorm buildings for freshmen, three for sophomores, and off campus housing for any upperclassmen. The freshmen housing varies on how great it is. If you're in the honors program and choose to be a part of the Honors LLC, then you'll get Campbell which is a house that's been made into a dorm. Botwinik and Bixler are normal dorm style buildings. Bethel is a little different and Ruden and Dunham are apartment style. Upperclassman housing is all nice and prepares you well for living on your own.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on what classes you take and how advanced you are, the work can be a little tough to keep up with. Being in a science field, sometimes it gets busy with all of the work and labs but if you keep focused, it's not too too bad.

    In three sentences

Even though I'm still in my second semester, I like the school so far. Many kids complain about things like food and tuition but you're not going to get gourmet food and a super cheap tuition. It's a great school for those who want to become a forensic scientist mostly, but any major is welcome.

Campus police is good at what it does. They have cameras everywhere and really crack down on bad behavior. I've never encountered a problem or felt unsafe on campus.

    Greek Life

It makes up a small portion of the school, but everyone seems so united and friendly. Not what I was expecting, in a good way.

    Clubs and Activities

In the beginning of the fall semester, there is a club fair held to showcase the hundreds of clubs available to students. Go. It was amazing and I met some great people from joining clubs.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who is thinking of majoring in forensic science, criminal justice, or anything sciency, this is the place for you. Even engineers and fire science majors work well here.

    Bang for the buck

If you have your heart set on this school: go. It's super expensive, but has a really great forensic and criminal justice program. The athletic teams do really well and the staff is super nice.

    What to do for fun

The campus is pretty huge and in a great location from a lot to do. The buses and shuttles take you to the milford mall and shopping/ clubs in new haven. On campus, there is a lot of rec sports and events going on to meet people. The plays and concerts are really incredible.

    Food and Dining

You'll find something you like at every restaurant and cafe on campus. A new one just opened up and it just makes the whole building smell like paradise. Go for the Blueberry Green tea at Jazzman's or the lobster rolls at the Hazel Nut cafe...

    Dorm Life

I do not live in the dorms, nor have I, so I wouldn't know.

    Academic Rigor

There are a lot of tough classes. The science ones being tougher becuase of the lab aspect being required to go along with the lecture. To make up for it, most of the teachers are really great. They say take Ratemyprofessor.com with a grain of salt, but so far, everything has been true.

    Tips for prospective students

If you're going to apply, apply early during Early Admissions. You get first dibs on the presidential scholarships, housing, and financial aid. This school is expensive so make sure it's YOU who wants to go and not your parents.

    In three sentences

This school has given me so many opportunities. I love my major, forensic science, I got a few jobs on campus, and I met some really nice people. Also, it was not as overwhelming as I thought it was going to be.

If you like the gym, the money to pay for tuition is absolutely worth it. The school even has a great tutor center where I get a lot of help for classes on. The tutors work on different days so you can find one that fits your scedual and works well with you.

    What to do for fun

The college is right near downtown new haven where there are man shops and eating places along with bars. On campus the gym is extrmemely nice and even has different classes.

    Food and Dining

The food is great and there are many different places to get food on campus instead of one dining hall to be stuck to like other schools.

    Dorm Life

There are lots of different types of dorms to choose from.

    Academic Rigor

Some classes are harder than others, and some professors are harder than others. In the end, its all the same. A harder education is better than an easier one anyway.

    Tips for prospective students

Look closely at what it is you want to do. Finding a concentration in a certain field of study sometimes makes it better for you. If something doesnt feel right, it isnt. This is your decision and your education, make it what you want.

    In three sentences

The univeristy has a variety of classes in my field of study that are of great interest. There are multiple doctors that are professors for each field of study so you know your professors are legitamite. The school is set in a city, but the campus feels like home with beautiful landscapes and buildings that are easy to find.

    In three sentences

The University is small but extremely welcoming; it has very skilled professors as well. unfortunately there is never enough parking, and the campus police take advantage of that. The school is predominately commuters, yet they hand out tickets like candy.

Greek life is not a big thing here but there are a couple of them. They put together a lot of events and they do fun stuff.

    What to do for fun

I am part of the paintball club, so I go paintballing. I go Downtown sometimes. I have a lot of fun with my roommates and some of my other friends. I go to sport events.

    Tips for prospective students

The one thing that I would say to students who are thinking about coming to this school is, there is really nothing to do outside the campus. The only thing that is outside the campus is Downtown New Haven, which is a lot of fun, but if you go every weekend it can get boring.

    In three sentences

This school has great teachers, and they want to see you succeed, they are always there to help you. The safety on this school is great, we have our own police station on the campus, and they are actual police officers, so you will always feel safe. This school also has a lot of clubs, there is something for everyone, and if there is not a club that you can find, then you can make one yourself, all you need is one other person and a teacher to support the club.

    What to do for fun

Located in West Haven, you are only a few minutes away from Connecticut beaches and downtown New Haven. Night clubs, restaurants, and the beautiful New Haven city are enough to keep you entertained. UNH also provides many clubs and activities to get involved in including recreational sports and classes in our fitness center like zoomba and cycling.

    Food and Dining

Sodexo does our dining services in the school's dining hall, but we also have restaurants on campus where your meal plan can be used. We have an assortment of cafe's, including a student run restaurant and a Dunkin' Donuts. You won't ever go hungry. The school even has its own convenient store where you can use your dining dollars to buy whatever you need. You might as well spend the money you already paid for.

    Dorm Life

Most of the dorms at UNH are suit style. As a freshman I have my own bathroom! There are plenty of living options at UNH to make it feel like home and foster your independence.

    Academic Rigor

The school focuses on experiential education. It is not about providing the most difficult courses to see who can survive the program, but to give you information and teach you how to apply in the field that you are hoping to go in to.

    Tips for prospective students

Get involved immediately! Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to someone new. You have no idea how far they can take you.

    In three sentences

The university is a home away from home. It provides a diverse social atmosphere in a strict academic environment. The faculty is invested in their students success.

There are indoor and outdoor intramural sports that you can play and there is no limit to how many intramural sports you can play. If you're not a sports person then there is always opportunities to get involved on campus in the diverse organizations and clubs on campus. University of New Haven has every club that the students came up with and if there is a club that exists that a student wants all they have to do is form the club and it is instantly initiated.

    Food and Dining

You will never be hungry and not know what to eat on this campus. There are a numerous amount of options and the day that you get bored or tired of the same food is when you have learned to make food for yourself. There is McDonalds, Subway, Sandella's Flatbread, a burger place called The Grill, a pasta place known as Sandini's and many more.

    Dorm Life

Everyone is so welcoming. I am never afraid to leave my door unlocked all day nor am I afraid that someone will steal something because whether it is simply that floor and or the entire building everyone maintains that family unity. No one is afraid or even ashamed to be themselves. Everyone knows everyone from the people who keep the bathrooms clean to al of the resident assistants on every floor.

    Academic Rigor

Everyone's academic goal is different therefore the amount of effort and integrity placed upon academic is merely up to that person and how badly they want it. University of New Haven relies upon this very goal for all the students. If you want a 4.0 GPA then that effort needs to be shown from the student and then that same amount of effort is then displayed from the entire faculty assisting the students in any way that they can.

    Tips for prospective students

Come in with an optimistic mind don't assume that every college is the same. Do not assume that your perfect college does not exist and simply give up on applying anywhere. University of New Haven is not my perfect college but it comes so close and exceeds all my expectation that it is not only my perfect college but my second home.

    In three sentences

University of New Haven is a fun and friendly atmosphere kind of school. There is always something to do, depending on ones creativity you can do just about anything on the campus from playing soccer on the soccer to field to snowboarding down the hill in the winter on cardboard boxes. There is always something fun to do.

Great for these types of students

Engineering, science, math, music, criminal justice

I do not think any private institution in America is worth the cost. I think that colleges should not be so expensive. It serves no purpose but to stuff someone's pockets and put poor students into debt for life.

    What to do for fun

New Haven is home to a number of theaters, beaches, and historical tourist attractions. I would deeply recommend the Yale Museum of Art in downtown New Haven, as well as the Long Wharf Theater.

    Food and Dining

The police men are the kindest around. They know that the school is in a bad neighborhood so they will do whatever they can to protect you. If you are scared, they will even walk you to where you need to go; even if it's just out to your car.

    What to do for fun

New Haven is a short bus ride away and the school offers a free shuttle downtown. There is so much to do there: food, shopping, clubs, a movie, etc. On campus, the various clubs and sororities/fraternities are always throwing a party or have an event. Just walk outside and you can find something fun.

    Food and Dining

The food is amazing! They offer a wide variety and multiple ways to pay. There are multiple locations all around campus so you can always find someone open near you. I still think about some of the items to this day.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are some of the best I have seen. Friends from other colleges have said that some of the best dorm room are here at UNH. They are beautiful, open, and the residence directors are some of the nicest around.

    Academic Rigor

Showing up to class is a must! Most teachers hate when students skip a day, even if you have mono (like me). From my experience, the teachers grade very harshly. It is a huge difference from high school and even as a freshmen, they offer no seconds chances. Some teachers provide extra hours outside if class time but it usually when other classes are scheduled. The classes are difficult and they tend to give you a lot to do at once. I have been told by friends from other colleges that UNH has it rough.

    In three sentences

UNH has great food, great dorm rooms, and great athletics, while everything else is just average. Where do you think all the money from tuition goes? Not where it it needed.
